Essential guide to Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole cruise terminals in Roatán (Honduras): where cruise ships dock, all services, and amenities at the cruise terminals.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 30, 2023

Most cruisers do not realize that there are two distinct ports and terminals in Roatán. Frequent cruisers that have called at Roatán with the same cruise line may believe that the port where a specific cruise line docks is the only one in Roatán.

Where Ships Dock in Roatán

However, different cruise liens dock in two distinct ports. Carnival Corporation cruise ships dock at Mahogany Bay whilst ships from all other cruise lines dock at Port of Roatán Town Center (aka Coxen Hole).

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

The largest of the two ports in Roatán is the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center , located on the southwest coast of the island and owned by Carnival corporation. Obviously, this is the docking port (and Terminal) for Carnival ships but also for Princess, Holland & America, and all other cruise lines belonging to this corporation.

The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center has two berths where two mega ships can dock. The piers and terminal can get busy and crowded at times with over 8,000 passengers and crew.

The Mahogany Bay Terminal

The two piers of Mahogany Bay share the same exit before entering a wide walkway that leads to a vast 20 acre welcome center/terminal. Once passed a couple of stores on both sides of the walkway, you will be on large square opening into the left.

Here you will find every single service and amenity the cruise traveler many need: Restrooms, ATM, Phones, the inevitable duty-free shops with the ubiquitous brands found in the Caribbean, Grills, Bars, Restaurants and a craft market. At the end of this elongated square, you will also find an information booth, car rentals, the shore excursions hub and a taxi stand.

To the right side of the exiting walkway, it is impossible to miss the Magical Flying Beach Chair. This chairlift service transports guests from the main plaza directly to white sand of Mahogany Beach - the all day pass costs $14 USD. If you prefer, there is a shaded path to Mahogany Beach which is around 15 minutes walk away.

Mahogany Beach

The top attraction of Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is the beach. In fact, this is more like a private island run by Carnival Corporation and, in a way, is just an extension of your cruise ship. This 10-acre area with its over 800-foot-long beach is dotted with water-sports, beach activities, beach bars and grills.

For those looking for a more secluded day at the beach, the Blue Lagoon has personal beach bed cabanas on a private beach.

This port and Terminal is much smaller than Mahogany Bay, only has one pier perpendicular to the coast and the exit gates open directly into a nice but smaller plaza. But the terminal also has all basics services like Restrooms, Car Rental, Pharmacy, ATM, Internet, an Information Booth, and Taxi Stand.

Photo of Coxen Hole Cruise Terminal in Roatán (Honduras) Cruise Port

This terminal only has a few duty-free stores and gift shops. The shore excursion bus hub is on the right side of the terminal. On the left side, you will find the the taxi dispatch and the exist to the main street leading to Coxen Hole. Although within walking distance, there isn't much to see in this small town.

You'll be docked on the south side of Roatan at Coxen Hole, the largest city and capital of the Bay Islands.

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and NCL ships dock at the Coxen Hole cruise ship dock and mall complex, opened in late 2008. Here you'll find a bank with an ATM, a large Diamonds International shop, a couple of restaurants and a smattering of other shops, including a pharmacy and a liquor store. (With the success of the initial development, the local authorities are now building a Phase II recreational complex adjacent to the current mall shops.)

Carnival, Princess, Costa, Holland America and Regent ships dock at the new Mahogany Bay Cruise Center , which is located in Dixon Cove east of Coxen Hole. This complex, which officially opened in February 2010, includes a Duty Free store, several jewelers (including a Diamonds International shop and a Tanzanite International shop), several restaurants and bars, snack bars, a pharmacy, and a number of souvenir and other tourist-related shops. The terminal is owned by Carnival Corp.

Adjacent to the Cruise Center is the white sand 10-acre Mahogany Beach, which can be reached on foot or via the " Magic Flying Beach Chair " (unlimited rides for $14/ day).

The port is quite sensitive to wind issues; often not able to enter port.

Tips and Reminders for Roatan Shore Excursions

Planning a shore excursion in Roatan can be an exciting part of your cruise experience. To help make your visit to this tropical paradise even more enjoyable, here are some tips and reminders to keep in mind during your Roatan shore excursions.

Research and book in advance: Take the time to research and book your shore excursions in advance. This ensures that you secure your preferred tours and activities, especially if they are popular or have limited availability. Look for reputable tour operators with positive reviews to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Plan the timing: Keep an eye on the docking schedule of your cruise ship to determine the amount of time you have on the island. Consider the distance and duration of your chosen shore excursions to ensure you have enough time to return to the ship before departure. It’s always wise to allow some buffer time to account for unforeseen delays or traffic.

Dress appropriately: Roatan has a tropical climate, so dress comfortably and prepare for the warm weather. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for protection against the sun’s rays. If you’re planning water activities or beach visits, don’t forget your swimsuit, towel, and water shoes.

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout your shore excursions to stay hydrated, especially if you’re spending time under the sun. Remember to pack a reusable water bottle that you can refill during the day. It’s also advisable to avoid excessive consumption of alcohol to prevent dehydration.

Keep an eye on your belongings: While Roatan is generally considered safe for tourists, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on your personal belongings. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or wearing expensive jewelry. Use a money belt or a secure bag to keep your valuables safe. Be mindful of your surroundings and exercise caution, especially in crowded areas.

Respect the local culture: Roatan has a rich cultural heritage, so be respectful of the local customs and traditions during your shore excursions. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites or local communities, and ask for permission before taking photos of individuals. Engage with the locals with an open mind and embrace the opportunity to learn about their customs, history, and way of life.

Follow instructions and guidelines: Listen carefully to the instructions provided by your tour guides or operators for your safety and the preservation of the natural environment. Adhere to the guidelines for snorkeling, diving, or other activities to minimize your impact on fragile ecosystems and wildlife. Follow responsible tourism practices by avoiding littering and respecting the natural surroundings.

Communicate any special needs: If you have any specific dietary restrictions, mobility concerns, or other special needs, inform your tour operator in advance. They will make the necessary arrangements to ensure your comfort and enjoyment during the shore excursions.

Be mindful of time: Keep track of the time and return to the meeting point or designated pick-up location well before your ship’s departure time. Leave some buffer time to allow for unexpected delays or traffic, ensuring that you don’t miss the ship’s departure.

Here's everything you need to know about the Mahogany Bay cruise port in Roatan, from how to get there to what there is to do ashore.

If you’re taking a cruise to the western Caribbean, your itinerary might include a stop to the Honduran island of Roatán. There are two cruise ports there, one of them being the Carnival Corp.-owned Mahogany Bay.

Here, we’re going over everything you need to know about this beautiful cruise port, which includes shops, restaurants, a beach, and more.

What is Mahogany Bay?

The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is located on the southern side of Roatán, a 33-mile-long Honduran island located north of the mainland in the Caribbean Sea. The development, which opened in late 2009, is a joint venture between Carnival Corporation and local businessman Jerry Hynds.

The dock can accommodate two large cruise vessels, with the port area able to hold 8,000 people. There is no need for tendering at this port.

The project, which cost $62 million, encompasses 20 acres of waterfront property. Further, it includes a chair lift system (called the Magical Flying Chair) that takes visitors from the terminal building to Mahogany Beach.

The cruise port is likely named after Honduran mahogany trees. These are the most widespread species of mahogany and the only genuine mahogany species that’s grown commercially today.

Mahogany Bay is the second of two cruise ports on Roatán. The first is the Port of Roatán located west of Mahogany Bay in Coxen Hole. That port can accommodate three vessels at once — one docking alongside and two at anchorage.

The Coxen Hole cruise ship dock is where you will dock if cruising with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, or MSC Cruises.

Getting to Mahogany Bay Cruise Port

Mahogany Bay is a private destination open only to cruise passengers. At the time of writing, only two cruise lines have sailings that include stops to Mahogany Bay: Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line. However, other Carnival Corporation brands (like Princess Cruises or Costa Cruises) can also call to the destination. Non-Carnival Corp. cruise lines may have agreements that allow them to stop at Mahogany Bay as well.

As the port is located in Honduras, the most common itinerary that includes Mahogany Bay are voyages to the western Caribbean. Some longer southern Caribbean voyages on Holland America also include a stop at Roatán.

Once you disembark your ship, walking off the dock will lead you straight into a large Dufry duty-free store. This area sells beach necessities and souvenirs as well as common duty-free goods like liquor and perfume. There is no option to avoid walking through the store. It’s part of the path that leads off the dock and out of the terminal area. The main shopping and dining area at Mahogany Bay is located just beyond the terminal and duty-free store.

Mahogany Bay Beach

If you want to head over to the port’s beach area, the easiest way to get there is via the chairlift. It costs $8 per child and $14 per adult for an all-day pass. Kids ages 3 and under ride for free, but keep in mind that there is a 32-inch minimum height requirement.

Those who want to skip the chairlift (and have some shade on their way over to the beach) can walk over from the shopping area in about 10 minutes. There’s a regular paved path, but you can also take the scenic route — a nature trail.

This trail takes you back into a wooded area and winds around the water. If you have mobility issues, we recommend either taking the chairlift or the paved path as the nature trail includes some slight elevation changes and has loose gravel. But if you want a nice trip through some flora on your way to the beach — and some great spots to take photos of your ship — consider choosing the nature trail.

There’s so much to do in the port area that you could spend your entire day ashore just enjoying what it has to offer. However, if you plan to go off exploring on your own or taking an excursion, there’s also a transportation spot with taxis and shuttles available.

What’s included at Mahogany Bay cruise port?

Visiting the 825-foot-long Mahogany Bay beach is a bit like having access to a beach club for the day. Hanging out on a lounge chair and splashing around in the surf are completely free for cruisers to enjoy. In addition to having complimentary access to the loungers, floating mats are free for guest use as well.

Additionally, the end of the beach area includes sand volleyball courts for visitors to enjoy. There’s also a basketball court and soccer field located behind the watersports rental area.

Clamshells and Cabanas

While many of the free loungers on the beach are in the shade, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to snag a shaded one as they fill up quickly. To ensure that you’ll have plenty of shade during your beach day, you can rent a clamshell for around $30.

If you want to elevate your experience at Mahogany Bay beach, consider renting one of the beachfront cabanas. The air-conditioned cabanas can accommodate up to four guests and include the use of a semi-private beach area. They also include two loungers, a double wooden lounge bed with covered cushions at the beach, a hammock, a fridge stocked with soda and water, a bag of chips, beach accessories including four floats, a safe for valuables, a TV, WiFi access, and waiter service. The rental of a cabana also includes four chair lift tickets.

On Carnival Cruise Line’s website, a cabana rental is currently listed for $500.

Things to Do at Mahogany Bay

The cruise center just off the dock has a number of shops, including an arts and crafts market showcasing the wares of over a dozen Honduran artists. There’s also Del Sol color-changing apparel, bamboo bedding and clothing from Cariloha, Piraña Joe clothes and souvenirs, Harley Davidson, Diamonds International, Effy Jewelers, and much more. There’s even a pharmacy if you need first-aid supplies or medication.

Over on the beach side of the port area, in addition to lounging on the beach and swimming in the ocean water sports equipment is available for rent. This includes snorkeling gear, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, paddle boats, aqua cycles, and more.

The beach also has some food and beverage offerings, as does the main cruise center. That brings us to our next section…

Food and Drinks at Mahogany Bay

When you start getting hungry for lunch at the beach, head over to one of two Fat Tuesday’s locations in Mahogany Bay — the one closest to the beach is located adjacent to the beach area entrance. In addition to cocktails and other beverages, the menu includes food items such as quesadillas, nachos, wings, grilled chicken, ceviche, and more.

Other restaurants/bars that can be found at the beach area include Playa Tortugas Chill n’ Grill, El Hideaway serving up fresh seafood, and a venue offering Caribbean jerk chicken.

A second Fat Tuesday’s location can be found here, as well as the Espresso Americano Coffee Shop offering fresh coffee from Honduran beans, Crazy Ice Gelato serving gelato and ice cream, and Hurricane Hole with frozen specialty cocktails.

Unlike some other cruise line private islands , you will have to head back to your ship if you are looking for free food options though.

Blue Lagoon at Mahogany Bay

If you want a more peaceful beach experience at Mahogany Bay, consider booking a package at Blue Lagoon, which is adjacent to the public Mahogany Bay beach area. There are two packages to choose from: the Blue Lagoon Package and the Blue Lagoon Deluxe Package.

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Roatan Cruise Ports, what to do while visiting Roatan, and what to know for your visit. Let’s dive in!

The Roatan Cruise Ports

There are two cruise ports in Roatan: Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay . Coxen Hole (Port of Roatan) is a public port that is used by Virgin Voyages , Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, and other cruise lines. Mahogany Bay is a private port owned by Carnival Corporation and used by Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line. Both ports are located on the south side of the island, about 15 miles apart.

Coxen Hole Roatan Cruise Port

Coxen Hole is the main town and capital of Roatan, and it is where the public cruise port is located. This is the port that Virgin Voyages utilizes . It is a bustling port that has a more authentic and local feel than Mahogany Bay. Coxen Hole has a smaller shopping area with local vendors, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It also has a tourist information center, a bank, and an ATM.

Coxen Hole is the gateway to the rest of the island, and it is where you can find more options for shore excursions, transportation, and tours. You can take a taxi, a bus, or a water taxi to explore other parts of Roatan, such as West Bay, West End, Sandy Bay, or French Harbour. It does not have a beach within walking distance, but there are many nearby beaches that you can visit, such as Tabyana Beach, West Bay Beach, or Half Moon Bay Beach.

Mahogany Bay Roatan Cruise Port

Mahogany Bay is a modern and well-designed port that offers a lot of amenities and facilities for cruise travelers. It has a large shopping complex with duty-free shops, souvenir stores, restaurants, bars, and a pharmacy. It also has a transportation hub where you can book shore excursions, rent a car, or take a taxi.

The highlight of Mahogany Bay is Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. You can access the beach by walking for about 5 minutes, or by taking the Magical Flying Beach Chair, a ski-lift-style ride that costs $14 per person for unlimited rides. The beach is clean and spacious, with plenty of lounge chairs, umbrellas, cabanas, and water sports equipment for rent. There is also a beach bar and grill, a volleyball court, and a water park for kids.

Is Roatan, Honduras Safe for Cruise Port Passengers?

One of the common questions that cruise travelers have is whether Honduras is safe for cruise ships. Honduras is a developing country that has a high level of poverty, crime, and violence. However, Roatan is a separate island that is relatively safer and more peaceful than the mainland.

The cruise ports are well-secured and patrolled by security guards and police officers. The cruise lines also work closely with the local authorities and tour operators to ensure the safety and comfort of their passengers. However, this does not mean that you should let your guard down or ignore the common-sense precautions.

I felt safe all throughout Roatan. The locals were friendly and eager to have us visit as travelers. I also met a handful of travelers and ex-pats along the journey.

Roatan Cruise Port - Eleanor

Things to Do in Roatan Honduras Cruise Port

Enjoy the beach.

The main attraction of Roatan is the beach! The island has over 40 miles of coastline, with white sand, turquoise water, and palm trees. You can find a beach for every taste and preference, from secluded and quiet to lively and fun. Many cruise port visitors will go to West Bay Beach. Tabyana Beach and French Key are also great options for a lovely, relaxing day.

West Bay Beach is one of the best beaches I’ve ever been to. I snorkeled along the shore and saw gorgeous colorful coral and fish. The water is very calm for swimming. And, the sand is a soft powdery white.

Along West Bay beach, there are several hotels and resorts, including the popular Infinity Bay Resort (pictured below). Infinity Bay Resort also boasts La Palapa, Beach Bar and Grill, a fun waterfront hangout with delicious seafood and flowing drinks.

Snorkel the Reef

Another major attraction of Roatan is the reef. The island is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. The reef is home to thousands of species of fish, coral, and other marine life. It is also one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and diving, as the water is warm, clear, and calm.

You can find many spots and sites to explore the reef, from shallow and easy to deep and challenging. Some of the best spots and sites to explore the reef are West Bay Reef, Mahogany Bay Reef, and Mary’s Place which is a dive site on the south side of the island.

Experience the Culture

Roatan is not only a natural paradise, but also a cultural melting pot, with a variety of ethnic groups and languages. The island has a rich and diverse history and heritage, influenced by the indigenous, Spanish, British, African, and Caribbean cultures. You can experience the culture of Roatan by visiting some of the historical and cultural sites, such as the Roatan Museum which displays artifacts and exhibits related to the history, culture, and natural environment of the island, and Garifuna Village, the first Garifuna settlement in Central America.

Visit Roatan Chocolate Factory to see how the fresh chocolate is made on the island. While you’re there, scoop up some souveniers to take home!

You can also visit the Roatan Rum Company, which sells the most delicious rum cake! Some is packaged to easily take home from your travels, though you may have a tough time waiting to dig into it.

Encounter Wildlife

Roatan is not only a paradise for marine life, but also for land animals. The island has a diverse and abundant wildlife, with many species of animals, birds, reptiles, and insects. You can meet the wildlife of Roatan by visiting some of the animal sanctuaries and parks, such as Top Jungle, Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout, Arch’s Iguana and Marine Park, and Carambola Botanical Gardens and Trails.

Quick side note: Please do not touch or hold the sloths while visiting. This is considered animal cruelty, as sloths don’t like to be touched. Unfortunately, places that have branded themselves as sanctuaries are profiting over the exploitation of the sloths.

Tours from Roatan Cruise Port

Many travelers will take shore excursions hosted by their cruise lines, especially because of safety and assurance in getting back to the ship on time.

I recommend the following Shore Things for Virgin Voyages sailors:

  • For a fun day in the sun: Live, Lunch, Lounge French Key Beach
  • For those who just want to hit the beach: West Bay Beach Transfer
  • For the best of the island: Trifecta Tour with mangroves pictured below
  • For adrenaline: Zip Line Adventure

Other cruise lines, like MSC, offer similar excursions.

However, you’ll get to see more of the island if you hire a local guide. Please email me directly to arrange private group tours.

I’ve gone on two trips with a local guide:

  • Private highlights of Roatan (west side of the island) – lookout points, island tour, Roatan Chocolate Factory , West Bay Beach , Roatan Rum Company , animal encounter at Jungle Top
  • Private Oak Ridge tour (east side of the island) – the “Venice of Roatan”, tiki boat, mangroves (pictured above), Trico beach bar, Reef House bar & beach. This is best for those who have been to Roatan before and are seeking a different experience.

Things to Know Before Going to Roatan, Honduras Cruise Port

Roatan is a wonderful and welcoming island that is easy and enjoyable to visit. However, there are some things that you should know before going to Roatan Honduras cruise port, to make your trip smoother and more pleasant. Here are some of the things that you should know before going to the Roatan Honduras cruise port:

  • The currency of Honduras is the lempira (HNL), but the US dollar (USD) is widely accepted and preferred in Roatan. You can exchange your money at the bank or the ATM at the port, or use your credit or debit card at most places. However, it is advisable to have some cash on hand, especially for tips, taxis, or small purchases. Take small bills with you!
  • The weather of Roatan is tropical and humid, with an average temperature of 82°F (28°C) and an average humidity of 75%. The rainy season is from October to January, and the dry season is from February to September. However, the weather can be unpredictable and change quickly, so it is advisable to check the forecast before your trip and pack accordingly. You should bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent, and a light jacket or sweater for the evenings or the air-conditioned places.
  • The time zone of Roatan is Central Standard Time (CST). The ship will likely stay on Ship Time, the time at home base – ET for cruises departing from Miami. Roatan does not observe daylight saving time (DST), so it is the same time as the US Central Time Zone in the winter, and one hour behind in the summer.

Can you walk to a beach from the cruise port in Roatan, Honduras?

It depends on which cruise port you dock at. If you dock at Coxen Hole (Virgin Voyages), you cannot walk to a beach from the port, but you can take a taxi, a bus, or a water taxi to one of the nearby beaches, such as West Bay Beach, Tabyana Beach,  or Half Moon Bay Beach. The ride takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the traffic and the destination, and costs about $10 to $20 per person, round trip.

At port, there will be many drivers aggressively trying to get you to drive with them. I would recommend taking a private tour but if you just want a ride, try to arrange with a reputable company in advance of your trip.

If you dock at Mahogany Bay, you can walk to Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. It takes about 5 minutes to walk to the beach, or you can take the Magical Flying Beach Chair.

Do you need a passport to get off a cruise ship in Honduras?

According to the US Department of State, US citizens who travel to Honduras by cruise ship do not need a passport to enter or exit the country, as long as they have a government-issued photo ID and a cruise line ID. However, it is strongly recommended to have a valid passport in case of an emergency or a change of plans, such as missing the ship or needing to fly back home.

Is there a shopping complex at the port in Roatan?

Yes, there is a shopping complex at both ports in Roatan. Coxen Hole has a smaller and more local shopping area with vendors, handicrafts, and souvenirs. You can find a variety of items and products at the port, such as clothing, jewelry, art, coffee, chocolate, rum, cigars, and more. Additionally, there are a number of restaurants and bars within the port. Why not get some drinks and enjoy the atmosphere?

Mahogany Bay has a large and modern shopping complex with duty-free shops, souvenir stores, restaurants, bars, and a pharmacy. However, be aware that the prices and the quality may vary depending on the place and the seller. You should also be careful of counterfeit or fake goods, especially for brand-name or luxury items.

Do they speak English in Roatan?

English is widely spoken and understood in Roatan, especially in the tourist areas and by the service providers. Spanish is the official language of Honduras. However, it is always nice and respectful to learn some basic phrases in Spanish, such as “hola” (hello), “gracias” (thank you), or “por favor” (please). You can also use a translation app or a dictionary to help you communicate with the locals.

Is there a free beach at Mahogany Bay Roatan cruise port?

Yes, there is a free beach at Mahogany Bay cruise port, which is Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers who dock at Mahogany Bay. You can access the beach by walking for about 5 minutes, or by taking the Magical Flying Beach Chair.

Exploring the Cruise Port of Roatan, Honduras

Last Updated on February 20, 2024 by Grant

Located about 40 miles off the coast of Honduras, the island of Roatan is a growing port for western Caribbean cruises. This small island is popular for nature-based activities including zip lining through the lush canopy, ATV adventures and wildlife encounters. Additionally, the island lies along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest reef in the world, making it a great location for snorkeling and diving.

Our first (and thus far, only) visit to Roatan was on a Western Caribbean cruise on the Norwegian Breakaway . We had heard many great things about the island and were eager to visit. Indeed, Roatan proved to be a wonderful cruise port and it is easy to see why it is gaining popularity.

Check out our full review of the Norwegian Breakaway .

It is important to note that there are actually two cruise ports, both on the south side of the island. Thankfully, both offer a wide range of shopping, dining and access to Roatan’s many different shore excursions and beaches.

(Disclaimer: When we link to places where you can buy our stuff or places we stayed, we are using special codes that earn us commissions on the sales at no additional cost to you. Please see our  Review Policy   for more information.)

Roatan Cruise Ports

We docked at the Port of Roatan at Coxen Hole. This port is used by Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. Right at the pier, you’ll find plenty of stores offering both local goods and the traditional duty-free shops found at many cruise ports. There are also many restaurants with outdoor seating to take advantage of Roatan’s fantastic weather.

As you disembark, just follow the signs to meet with your pre-arranged excursion. As usual, you’ll also find folks eager to sell you a last-minute tour or excursion.

Just outside the port area, you’ll find the small town of Coxen Hole. You can easily walk out of the port and follow the sidewalk to a few other shops, including a liquor store where we picked up a bottle of rum for some friends back home. There isn’t much touristy stuff outside the cruise port but if you want to walk a little on your own, you certainly can.

The Coxen Hole Roatan cruise port is starting work on what appears to be a significant expansion. Additions to the port area will include both a sea life and wildlife encounter, along with a lazy river, rum museum and more. I have no idea when this will be complete but it does look nice!

A second cruise port is located a little farther east at Mahogany Bay. This port is owned by Carnival, so is typically used by Carnival, Princess, Holland America and a few other cruise lines. We haven’t docked here, so I can’t say anything about it personally.  But, from what I’ve read it is a much more developed port area with a variety of things to do right there, including a free beach for cruise passengers only.

Shore Excursions in Roatan

Many of the shore excursions in Roatan offer the opportunity to be adventurous (zip line or ATV ride), view and interact with wildlife (monkeys and sloths, in particular) or relax on the beach. Of course, there are also water-based excursions including kayaking, sailing, and snorkeling.

Thankfully, there are also quite a few excursions that combine two or three of these popular activities.

Roatan ATV Eco-Jungle and Beach Adventure

In an effort to see and do as much as possible, we booked Norwegian’s ATV Eco-Jungle and Beach Adventure excursion. This particular excursion actually had three parts: ATV ride through the jungle, a stop at the Mayan Eden Eco Park and time on the beach at the Las Palmas resort.

The description of the excursion was a little vague, so we didn’t know exactly what to expect. It almost sounded like we would ride the ATVs to the beach. In reality, the three parts of the tour were completely separate. Still, we enjoyed the tour and really liked getting three different experiences in one day in Roatan.

One note about this tour: the “bus” that picked us up at the cruise port and took us around the island was very small. Honestly, it was barely bigger than a camper van, which seemed to be the standard in Roatan. We were all stuffed in like sardines. Thankfully, the bus rides were not very long. Still, that is something to consider if you are prone to motion sickness or just don’t like being in tight spaces.

ATV Jungle Tour

Our excursion started with the ATV adventure. Along the drive from the Roatan cruise port to the adventure park, our guide gave us a brief overview of the island and the people who live here. That is really important for us, in that we want to actually understand what life is like anywhere we visit.

Once there, we suited up with helmets and got a safety briefing. From there, we hopped on our single-rider ATVs and took off!

The group followed well-marked paths that were fairly easy to navigate on an ATV. There really were only a few places where we had tight turns or deep dips that took a bit of careful maneuvering. Additionally, we had a guide in the front and many employees along the trail making sure we followed the right path and were safe.

Perhaps the biggest downside was that we did do quite a bit of starting and stopping. And, the course wasn’t terribly long, so we crossed the same path a few times. Still, we definitely had an adventure and came away with quite a bit of mud on us! That’s always the sign of a good ATV ride.

In all, we spent about 30-40 minutes on the ATVs.

Note: Norwegian’s Buggy Eco-Adventure and Mayan Eden Nature Park is the same tour (we shared a bus the entire day). The only difference is two-passenger buggies rather than single-rider ATVs. We were happy we chose the ATVs but if you have children under 16, you’ll need to book the buggy excursion.

Mayan Eden Eco Park

From there, the bus took us to the Mayan Eden Eco Park. Here, a guide led us through the park to see various animals.

We walked through a butterfly house and saw toucans, macaws and several other animals that you don’t find in the US. It was really cool to see the tropical birds and to have an up-close encounter with the scarlet macaw.

The park is home to several free-roaming White Face Capuchin Monkeys, which seemed to have run of the place. They were fun to watch and if you wanted a picture with one, the guide was happy to bring out some treats to encourage one to hang out with you. Just watch your hat!

There were several other animals, including spider monkeys and the coatimundi, which looks kinda like a raccoon. We even saw a paca, which is a large rodent, rummaging through the jungle floor, not part of the exhibits.

The highlight was definitely getting to interact with the White Face Capuchin Monkeys and a three-toed sloth! We were not able to hold the sloth, like some photos show, because it was pregnant. Still, it was neat just to see one up close and personal. Everything it does really is in slow motion!

The walk through the nature park wasn’t terribly long or difficult but you do need to be able to navigate uneven terrain.

We spent about an hour at the nature park.

Beach Escape

From there, it was time to relax on the beach and soak up some sun! Our bus dropped us off at the Las Palmas Resort, where we had nearly two hours to enjoy the beach, get some lunch and sip on a couple of pineapple rum drinks.

Thankfully, we arrived early in the day and had our choice of lounge chairs. While we enjoy the beach, my fair skin can’t handle too much sun, so it was good that we found a couple of chairs in the shade!

First, we headed to the water to splash around and take a few pictures. Once we got in the water, it was great. But, right along the water’s edge, there were several very sharp rocks that were not easy on the feet. Still, the picturesque swing over the water was just about perfect!

After that, we headed to the beach-front restaurant for some lunch. We both opted for quesadillas (chicken for me, shrimp for Grant) and a local beer. The food was tasty but not anything super special. Still, enjoying lunch on the beach is not something we get to do often, so we really enjoyed it!

We ended our afternoon at the beach by partaking in the resort’s rum punch, served in a hollowed-out pineapple. Be sure to take advantage of getting a free refill!

Final Thoughts on the Roatan Cruise Port

After hearing many great things about Roatan, we were excited to finally visit. The Coxen Hole Port of Roatan is nice enough but definitely is a bit smaller than many other cruise ports, like Costa Maya or Cozumel . Still, you’ll generally find pretty much anything you need there. I am looking forward to the planned expansion and hope we get to enjoy that one day! I would also love to check out the Mahogany Bay cruise port sometime (I guess we’ll have to do another Princess cruise for that).

Roatan truly is a fantastic island and our only complaint is that one day wasn’t nearly long enough to truly enjoy it! There are a wide range of excursions available here, including both land and sea adventures or, of course, just relaxing on the beach. Regardless of what kind of experience you are looking for, you are sure to find something that you will enjoy.

Grant and I definitely enjoyed Roatan and all the lush vegetation. I could definitely see us coming back and staying for a week or so to do some more exploring and for Grant to do some snorkeling or SCUBA diving.

Travel Resources

What do you use to find a flight.

We use Skyscanner to find deals on flights. Skyscanner has a great interface and compares tons of airlines for the best pricing and routing. That said, it does not always have every airline and some airlines will have better deals on their website. Still, Skyscanner is a great place to start. Click here to search for a flight.

What do you use to find a hotel?

We typically stay at Hilton properties , so we use the Hilton website . You can find good Hilton Honors discounts or AAA discounts for a hotel there. We make great use of our free night certificates from our Hilton Honors American Express. Click here to book a Hilton property.

If there are no Hilton properties available, we use TripAdvisor to read reviews and book the hotel. We find we can get the best price that way. Click here to search for a hotel.

We recently partnered with Stay22 to add interactive maps to each of our destination posts. This will allow you to see a plethora of hotels and vacation rentals all in one responsive map of the area.

What if I need more space than I can get at a hotel?

We use Vrbo for the times when we have rented a cabin for a weekend getaway, like this cabin in Townsend, TN , or needed to rent a house for a large family vacation. We had a great experience with them in terms of refunding deposits when COVID hit and will continue to use them. Click here to search for a vacation rental.

Who do you use for rental cars?

As a general rule, we book with Hertz for rental cars. We have had nothing but good experiences with them. Plus, we really like unlimited mileage and not worrying about crossing state lines. We have even rented from Hertz overseas in both Slovenia and Croatia . Click here to book a rental car.

How about booking a cruise?

We have found some amazing prices for booking a cruise through Cruise Direct . We have saved a lot of money on our cruises compared to what we found elsewhere, making a last-minute Bahamas cruise even cheaper. Click here to book a cruise.

What if I want to rent an RV?

We highly recommend Outdoorsy for RV rentals. We rented a camper van for a week to visit Rocky Mountain National Park for the elk rut and Custer State Park for the Buffalo Round-Up and had a blast. The program was easy to use and we really enjoyed the freedom of having a camper van for that trip. Click here to rent an RV.

What do you use for booking tours?

We don’t often book tours. Typically, we like to do stuff on our own. That said, there are some experiences you can’t have any other way. So, when we do want to book a tour, we always check Viator first. Click here to book a tour.

Do you use anything to get discounts on the road?

We make extensive use of both Good Sam and AAA on the road. Good Sam is normally regarded as a discount card for RVers at campgrounds and Camping World but anyone can use the 5 cents off a gallon at the pump at both Pilot and Flying J. Click here to get a Good Sam membership. We have had AAA as long as we have been married and it has more than paid for itself in discounts at hotels, aside from the peace of mind of having roadside assistance. Add in paper maps and the ability to get an international driver’s license and it is more than worth it for any traveler out there. Click here to get a AAA membership.

Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan Cruise Center

There are two cruise ports located on the island of Roatán.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival Cruise Line built this port/cruise center, which can accommodate two mega-ships. Carnival cruise ships dock here, along with Princess and Holland America cruise lines.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a gigantic 20-acre welcome center with a “private” beach. Many cruisers will spend the day within the Cruise Center visiting the restaurants, bars, duty-free shops, craft markets, or just relaxing on the beach.

The Port of Roatán (Also Known as Coxen Hole)

This port can accommodate three cruise ships at a time. Ships from all of the other cruise lines (besides those mentioned above) typically dock here.

This port is within walking distance of Roatán island’s largest city, Coxen Hole. The port terminal has restrooms, taxi stands, tour and excursion pick-ups, and an ATM.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan

Roatán’s official currency is the Honduran lempira (HNL). However, cash (including USD!) reigns supreme here. You can pay with U.S. Dollars on Roatán, just expect to get change back in lempiras.

The official language in Roatán is Spanish, but English (with a Creole twist) is widely spoken.

The time zone in Roatán, Honduras, is Central Standard Time, which is one hour ahead of the Eastern time zone.

Roatán is an island in Central America located just off the Honduras coast. Its climate is tropical rainforest, with temperatures hovering in the 80-degree Fahrenheit range year-round.

Mid-July through October is considered the “warm season,” with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s. Roatán is very humid year-round, with humidity reaching 90% in the last four months of the year.

The rainy season in Roatán is from September through July.

Getting Around Roatán

The island of Roatán is 48 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. It is safest to book tours (whether private or cruise ship excursions) to get around Roatán.

Whether you port in Mahogany Bay Cruise Center or Coxen Bay, activities are within walking distance. The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a 20-acre complex with a beach, restaurants, bars, and shopping areas.

Coxen Hole is Roatán’s largest city. Activities and amenities, including shopping, restaurants, and bars, are within walking distance of the port.

Public Transit

There are many taxis and buses available for transport in Roatán. The “buses” are typically 16-passenger vans running regular routes between Coxen Hole and West End or French Harbour.

Taxis can be private “privado,” which costs a little more, or “colectivo,” which means you might pick up and drop off other people along your route. This is a fun way to chat with locals but might take a little longer to get to and from your destination.

Car Rentals

Car rentals are available on Roatán, with rental kiosks near the cruise terminal. The island is easy to navigate, just watch for horses and cows on the road.

The Best Roatán Shore Excursions

Roatan shore excursions

Roatán has a different vibe than other Caribbean cruise ports . This Honduran island has a Central American influence with a Caribbean twist.

Roatán is situated on top of exposed ancient coral reefs, and just off-shore is the second largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Reef System, also known as the Great Mayan Reef.

The diverse culture and unique natural wonders of Roatán make for a one-of-a-kind cruise port experience. Here are 22 of the best Roatán Shore Excursions.

1. Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival designed this 20-acre port complex to be an excursion in itself. The 800-foot-long white sand Mahogany Beach is part of the Cruise Center. You can get off the ship and spend the day reading on a beach chair or swimming in the crystal clear waters.

This beach gets busier and louder as the day goes on, so grab your chair early or choose a different beach if you are looking for quiet. The Cruise Center has a mix of duty-free shops and retailers, including Diamonds International, Del Sol, and Piranha Joes.

If you are hungry, there are several restaurants in the Cruise Center. Stop by Fat Tuesday’s atop Monkey Hill for amazing views, some Caribbean Jerk chicken, and a cold and refreshing “Banana Banshee” Daquiri.

2. Magical Flying Beach Chair

This is a fun experience that is unique to Roatán. Immediately after disembarking at Mahogany Bay Port, there is a chairlift that you can take to transport you to nearby Mahogany Bay Beach.

You’ll find the Magical Flying Beach Chair up the hill and to the right of the Cruise Center. You can purchase an “all-day pass” for unlimited use.

Be aware that the Flying Beach Chair frequently stops for people to get on and off. The chance to see iguanas in the trees and the magnificent ocean view make this a pleasant option.

3. Shop ‘Til you Drop at The Town Center Coxen Bay

Roatan cruise port shopping

There is a fantastic variety of duty-free boutiques and local souvenir shops in The Town Center shopping area at the Port of Roatán.

Be sure to stop at “Yaba Ding Ding” for local handmade arts and crafts, including Garifuna and Lenca pottery artwork. If you love photography, you’ll marvel at the underwater photos by Roatán local Shawn Jackson in his gallery here.

4. Snorkel, Scuba, and Relax at West Bay Beach

The world’s second-longest reef system, the Mesoamerican Reef, lies just off the coast of West Bay Beach. This beach is 30-45 minutes from the cruise ship docks and has some of the best snorkeling and diving in Roatán.

The beach is public and free to enter. However, paying a nearby resort for their day-use fee gives you access to chairs and a break from the vendors trying to sell their goods and services.

If you want to snorkel or scuba, water taxis from West Bay Beach will take you closer to the reef.

5. Cuddle a Sloth at an Animal Sanctuary

Roatan sloth

Several animal sanctuaries exist in Roatán. These excursions typically include the opportunity to hold a sloth, feed monkeys, and interact with parrots and macaws.

You can book a private tour, which is a little more expensive but allows you to move through the animal sanctuary (and have the experiences!) more quickly. This experience takes around an hour, so it is a good one to bundle with other excursions.

6. Spend the Day at The Little French Key

This resort is a one-stop excursion spot. You can pay a fee to participate in activities like horseback riding, swimming with pigs, massages, manicures, snorkeling and scuba diving, kayaking, rope swings, and a gift shop. They also have a mini zoo where they can interact with animals.

Look for the VIP pass, which includes drink vouchers, a lunch plate, a massage, horseback riding, and access to a less-crowded beach. Little French Key is a 30-minute drive from the port.

7. Taste the Unique Flavor of Wild Honduran Chocolate at a Chocolate Factory

Roatan Chocolate Experience

Cacao beans in Honduras are unique because they are grown in the wild instead of on plantations. Several chocolate factories can be visited to try this tasty treat.

Factory tours are usually a part of a “bundled” excursion. If you are a chocolate lover, this is a “must” for treats and souvenir shopping in Roatán.

8. Scuba Dive at the Mayan Reef

You don’t want to miss the opportunity to scuba dive in the second-largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Scuba diving is one of the top things cruisers recommend for porting here. Roatán has excursions available for every level of diver, from beginner to scuba-certified.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is home to diverse sea life, including colorful fish, coral, sea turtles, eels, stingrays, sponges, starfish, shrimps, and lobster. Most Scuba excursions take place on the West Side, nearest the reef, and will take several hours.

There are many dive shops in Roatán. You can book a beginner scuba excursion, where you learn scuba basics in the safety of a pool and then venture to the reef. Many boutique diving excursions will allow you to use your scuba certifications for magnificent dives in the deep.

9. See the Island’s Diversity while Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is a relaxing way to escape the crowds and see the diversity of this beautiful island.

There are many different types of rides available, from beach horseback riding to mountain trails. Some excursions offer a combo that includes a ride through local villages, up into the mountains, and even a ride along the beach.

10. Bike Around an Island on Hydrobikes

If you are looking for an out-of-the-ordinary water sports experience, hydrobiking is an exciting choice. Hydrobikes have pedals like a traditional bicycle, but are on floats so you glide on top of the ocean.

Your guide will take you on a tour around a private island near French Key. Hydrobikes are easy for all skill levels and are an active way to spend a few hours in Roatán. Just be sure to put on plenty of sunscreen.

11. Eat and Beach at Ginger’s on Half Moon Bay

Half-Moon Bay is located on the West End of Roatán. It is an exceptional beach for swimming and snorkeling, and the location of a delicious Caribbean Grill called Ginger’s.

You can use the beach chairs at Ginger’s if you order food OR just come for the delicious fresh seafood. Catch a game on the TV and order coconut shrimp and a frozen mojito.

12. Cruise Through the Mangroves

Located on the East End of Roatán, this excursion includes transportation to Oakridge’s traditional Caribbean fishing village. The town is an interesting visit, with buildings constructed on stilts over the water and fishing boats bobbing in the bay.

In Oakridge, you’ll board an authentic cayuco (a small motorized canoe), and travel with a guide through a canal dug out in the mangroves many years ago to connect the harbors and bays. Parts of the tunnel are barely wide enough for the boats to get through.

The land in mangrove forests provides shelter for migratory birds and monkeys, so there is a good chance to see (and hear) unique Roatán wildlife.

13. Spot Sea Turtles Underwater and On Land

If you love sea turtles, Roatán is an outstanding place to see them in their natural habitat. This island has three types of sea turtles: Hawksbill, Green, and Loggerhead Turtles.

The best time to see sea turtles on land is during their nesting period from July to August, when they come ashore to nest on West Bay Beach and Paya Bay Beach. If you are in Roatán during the non-nesting months, you can also observe these beautiful sea creatures gliding in the crystal-clear waters.

Dive and snorkel excursions are available that will take you to spots where sea turtles frequent. Typically, they are on the West End.

14. Take a Historical Dune Buggy Tour to Punta Gorda

This half-day excursion will take you on an adventure up to the North Shore and the historic fishing village of Punta Gorda. Drivers need to be 16 years or older and have a driver’s license.

Follow a tour guide on an adventurous dune buggy drive to the Punta Gorda community. Once you’ve arrived, enjoy a dance and music show by the Garinagu (Garifuna), natives of Roatán.

Afterwards, you can purchase lunch from nearby restaurants, including Garifuna favorites like Machuca, a delicious mash of green and sweet plantains rolled into bites and dunked into tasty soups.

15. Monkey Around at Gumbalimba Park

This 20-acre beachfront adventure park offers many options for adventure seekers. Your tour guide will teach you about the history of the island of Roatán and its people while you hike around and observe animals, including monkeys and macaws, roaming in their natural environment.

After you’ve met the monkeys, you can get a monkey’ s-eye view of the park’s Trail Canopy Tour. You’ll zipline between 17 cable platforms extending from 120 to 500 feet in length.

Gumbalina also has water activities, including kayaking and going to the beach.

16. See Fish Without Getting Wet on a Glass Bottom Boat Ride

Glass bottom boats depart regularly from the beach at West Bay on Roatán. If you cannot snorkel or scuba but want to see the wonders of the reef, this is a fantastic way to do it.

These boats have windows that are underwater in a “semi-submarine” experience. Choose a glass-bottom boat ride if you want to witness the gorgeous marine life in Roatán without the hassle of sand and sunburns.

17. Underwater Scooter like a BOSS

If you want a unique scuba-like experience without the certification, you can book a BOSS (Breathing Observation Submersible Scooter) excursion. Your adventure will start with a catamaran ride out to the reef. Once you arrive, you’ll have the option to use snorkel equipment or try out the BOSS.

The BOSS submersible electric scooter has an oxygen-filled breathing helmet attached. You’ll be able to breathe freely while you scooter around 8 feet below the water surface, viewing the colorful marine life in Roatán.

18. Learn About Local Flora at the Carambola Botanical Garden

The 40-acre botanical garden is home to a variety of beautiful plants, including orchids, fruit and nut trees, flowering plants, medicinal plants, the world-famous Honduran mahogany tree, and the popular “Chocolate Tree.”

The botanical gardens can be visited as a self-guided tour, or for more money, you can have an informational guided tour by the founder of the garden. Plan on walking along the jungle paths for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

19. Snorkel Right-off Tabyana Beach

The reef is more accessible from this beautiful beach. Unlike other beaches in Roatán, which require a short boat ride to reach the reef, you can explore it about 300 feet off the shore of Tabyana Beach, making it one of the best beaches for snorkeling.

Some excursions include snorkeling at Tabyana, or you can take a 20-25 minute taxi cab ride from the port.

You can relax on towels on the public beach or pay a resort fee to use nearby chairs. Local beach vendors aren’t allowed in roped-off areas, so if you want to relax without interruption, the resort fee is worth the money.

20. Spend the Day on the Private Island of Maya Key

Maya Key is a small private island that is located 3 minutes from the Roatán Cruise Terminal and 15 minutes from Mahogany Bay Cruise Terminal.

This 11.5-acre island has two beaches, a 70,000-gallon pool, an animal rescue center, jungle garden paths, a Mayan Interpretation Center, A Honduras Art Exhibit, a restaurant, and a shopping center.

Day passes for Maya Key start at $35 and include a tour of the wildlife center, access to the beaches and pools, and the use of restroom facilities. It will cost extra for the museums, food and drinks, lockers and shopping.

21. Roatan Craft Markets

Roatan Rusty Fish craft market

There are some awesome craft markets in Roatan. Many items are hand made by locals. One great shop is Rusty Fish, which uses recyclable materials.

22. Sample Local Rum at the Roatán Rum Company

Rum cakes, rum cigars, and, of course, rum are the stars of this excursion. Located between West End and West Bay, the Roatán Rum Company offers samples of unique artisan rums (dark chocolate, spiced, and Caribbean coconut, to name a few) and rum cakes.

Roatán Rum Co. is located right across from El Faro Lighthouse and next door to a small souvenir market. Many excursions combine the three.

23. Choose Your Adventure with a Customizable “Best of Roatán” Tour

If you are having a hard time deciding between all of these exciting excursions, a “Best of” tour might be the way to have your rum cake and eat it, too.

You can choose the activities you want and have the expertise of a local driver to get you where you need to go. Roatán is small enough that you should be able to fit in several activities, and tour guides are often flexible with the weather.

A customizable tour is a great way to experience all that Roatán has to offer.

Cool Cruiser

Thought I might buy some medicine in one of these ports near the cruise ship. Anyone have any experience? what have you bought?

Thanks for any info!

I would personally not buy any. You cannot be sure you are getting what you think you are getting. Plus, there may be laws preventing you from bringing some drugs into the country.

90,000+ Club

Are you ill? Do you need something specific?

This is a risky practice...unless you really need a specific medication that's too expensive at home, you really shouldn't do this. You stand the risk of medicating yourself with the wrong drug, or helping "antibiotic resistance" take hold even more than it has (think, MRSA!...bad stuff!)

Unless you're ill, go swimming or touring...forget buying meds you don't need.

timh111

PLEASE...rethink this. You won't know what your getting, how old it is or if it's safe!! The price may seem attractive, but the after effects may really hurt you. I have heard MANY stories of how people bought prescriptions at ALL 3 of these ports and became ill. PLEASE, For your own safety...get your scripts filled at HOME!!

matj2000

I have found that Belize offers the best variety of drugs. Many that you can't get at the Mexican pharmacys. I think their prices are better also..

In Cozumel, there was a "pharmacy" in with the pier shops. Prices were ok, and no ill effects from any of the meds we bought.

Can't comment on Belize or Roatan yet... 18 more days!!!!!!!!!

wadethegringo

I have been using several meds from Belize pharmacies for three years with only positive results....

zstell

I am not one to EVER advocate purchasing medication in a foreign country, but I did purchase the generic of Plavix for my inlaws in Belize. They had fallen into the "donut hole" w/prescriptions and the generic for Plavix is not sold in the U.S. anymore. It is a small fraction of the brand and we have not encountered any problems. I will be purchasing a years worth when we visit next year. Honduras and Cozumel were no less expensive than home.

GTJ

But if one's home country is a country that doesn't have reliable medications, then medications from Belize, Honduras, or Mexico may well be safer. Not everyone's home country has the best medical care, and indeed, many people travel from their home countries to foreign countries (especially to the United States) for medical care. Someone living in, say, Haiti, might well take advantage of being on a cruise to buy medicine in a foreign country because it could be newer or safer than medicine purchased at home.

I have taken Metformin antibiotics, and many other meds over the past two years. All have done what they were supposed to do with no adverse effects.

What I would tell people is that you should not self diagnose. If it is something you are taking now I would monitor your condition closely due to fact you are changing brands and posably dosage .

CrusingJoe

Where in Belize is the RX store?

Belize was the best place for us. I can't remember the name since it's been a while but we have never had a problem.

Lower prices and every presription was authentic .

Do you have to have a prescription with you to get meds while in Belize?

murphfam4

do you need a prescription for Ambien?
here in the states yes, just trying to find out if you do in Belize.
Probably not...I can ask at a pharmacy here in San Pedro for you.

Yes, I know you need one here in the states I mean in Belize. Thanks

That would be great, thank you!

No prescription needed in Belize for what we got (antibiotics and back pain meds).

jeanarch

No prescription needed in Belize...You can get just about anything. In Cozumel it depends on the drug. If it has a narcotic you must have a RX. I have bought RX drugs that I take on a regular basis in the Rio Grande valley for a long time without a RX. They are comparable in price to the drugs ordered from Canada with a RX. The downtown pharmacies in Cozumel are less expensive than the one at the port.

lol im glad i live in a country with universal health care!

lol im glad i live in a country with excellent and almost free health care

I buy RetinA cream with no problems in Mexico.

Mack2

I am a pharmacist in the U.S.

I don't recommend buying these medications abroad... especially since there aren't stringent laws preventing counterfeiting over there like they have here.

People will go to buy, anyway... and from what I saw, I feel folks were doing it for recreational use.

Regardless, I DID take a photo of the pharmacy in Belize at the cruise port.

******, Vicodin, Ambien, Retin-A, Darvocet

Darvocet has been removed from the US market recently because of some nasty side effects like heart arythmias and death.

http://www.usrecallnews.com/2010/11/potentially-fatal-heart-abnormalities-final-straw-in-darvocet-recall.html

I do not have a high opinion of pharmacies like this, but they are legal IN THOSE COUNTRIES.

Getting caught with them at Customs would probably lead to them getting confiscated.

http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/clearing/restricted/medication_drugs.xml

Moreover, in those instances where a United States manufacturer makes an FDA-approved prescription drug and sends it abroad, the Act also prohibits any person other than the original manufacturer from importing the drug back into the United States. Thus, in virtually all instances, individual citizens are prohibited from importing prescription drugs into the United States.

Roatan Cruise Port

Booking Excursions through Cruise Line vs. Private Company

When visiting Roatan on a cruise, one of the important decisions you’ll need to make is how to plan your onshore excursions.

You have two primary options: booking excursions through the cruise line or opting for a private tour company. Each approach has its pros and cons, and the choice ultimately depends on your preferences and priorities.

Booking through the Cruise Line

  • Convenience : Cruise lines offer a seamless booking process. You can reserve excursions online or onboard the ship, making it hassle-free.
  • Reliability : Cruise line excursions are vetted and coordinated by the cruise company. You can trust that they will be well-organized and adhere to your ship’s schedule.
  • Safety : Cruise lines prioritize passenger safety and have established protocols for excursions. They typically work with reputable tour operators.
  • Guaranteed Return : If your cruise line excursion runs late and causes the ship to depart without you, the cruise line is responsible for getting you to the next port.
  • Variety : Cruise lines offer a range of excursions to suit different interests and activity levels.
  • Cost : Cruise line excursions can be more expensive than booking independently, as the cruise line adds a markup for convenience and coordination.
  • Crowds : Cruise line excursions may have larger groups, potentially reducing the personalized experience.
  • Limited Flexibility : Itineraries and schedules are fixed, leaving limited room for customization.

Roatan Cruise Port

Booking through a Private Tour Company

  • Cost Savings : Private tour companies often offer excursions at lower prices, allowing you to get more value for your money.
  • Personalized Experience : Smaller group sizes mean you can enjoy a more personalized and intimate experience.
  • Flexibility : Private tours can often be customized to your preferences, allowing you to explore Roatan at your own pace.
  • Local Knowledge : Local tour guides can provide insights into the island’s culture, history, and hidden gems.
  • Diverse Options : You can choose from a wide range of specialized tours that may not be available through the cruise line.
  • Coordination : You’ll need to coordinate transportation to and from the cruise port, which can be less convenient than cruise line excursions.
  • Safety : While many private tour companies are reputable, there is a degree of responsibility on your part to research and choose a reliable operator.
  • Time Management : Private tours may not adhere to your ship’s schedule as rigorously as cruise line excursions, so you need to be mindful of the departure time.
  • Risk : In the unlikely event of tour delays, the cruise ship may not wait for passengers on private excursions.

Tips for Choosing

To make an informed choice, consider the following tips when looking at Roatan cruise port:

  • Research : Read reviews, check ratings, and gather information about private tour companies to ensure they have a good reputation.
  • Budget : Determine your budget and compare the cost of cruise line excursions with private options.
  • Interests : Choose excursions that align with your interests and the type of experience you seek.
  • Group Size : Consider whether you prefer a larger group experience or a more intimate one.
  • Flexibility : If you value flexibility and customization, private tours may be the better option.
  • Safety : Regardless of your choice, prioritize safety by following the guidance of tour operators and respecting local rules.

Ultimately, both cruise line and private company excursions offer unique advantages.

Your decision should be based on what matters most to you—whether it’s convenience, cost, personalized experiences, or exploring Roatan cruise port’s hidden gems with a local touch.

The island is located close to the Caribbean's largest barrier reef (also ranked the world's 2nd largest) - the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.

Roatan is Honduras' main cruise ship, scuba diving and eco-tourism travel destination. The island's economy is heavily based on tourism, followed by commercial fishing.

Isla Roatan is served by Juan Manuel Galvez Airport (international and domestic flights) and by the Galaxy Wave ferry (460-passenger fast catamaran offering twice-a-day service to La Ceiba). Roatan Airport connects to mainland Honduras (La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula), Costa Rica (San Jose), Panama City , Belize City , Grand Cayman , Canada ( Quebec City , Montreal , Toronto ), USA ( Miami , Houston , Atlanta), Guatemala (San Salvador, Guatemala City). Roatan Marine Park is a community-based, non-profit organization, established in 2005 by local businesses and dive operators to protect the surrounding coral reefs. Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS) was founded in 1989 to preserve the island's natural resources through research and education. RIMS is in Sandy Bay and features over 50 km (30 mi) of barrier reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds. All reef systems throughout Bay Islands are protected by the government and helped by charitable donations.

I recently visited two farmacias in Coxen Hole... a few observations...

A friend back in the States asked me to price some medications for her. As has been indicated on the forum, no prescriptions were needed for drugs that do require a prescription in the US. These were common drugs - nothing narcotic or anything... not sure what would have happened if i'd asked for oxycodone...

But blood-pressure meds and amoxicillin were available - and cheap.

First I priced at the farmacia at "the Triangle" - that's where the main road into Coxen Hole splits off the main road on the west side of Coxen Hole... near the new taco shop and just west of the road up to Plaza Mar. This is a smallish place.

The bad news - all the drugs I checked are higher... considerably higher... than the other farmacia I used. For example... the blood pressure medication - a generic - was $.15 a pill here. That's lots lots lots less than my friend pays in the US... but at the other place they were only 2.3 lemps apiece, about $.11 each.

The good news - this farmacia has a TIGO franchise. I learned to read the fine print when my month long TIGO purchase was used up in 20 days... turns out it is 30 days or a certain amount of data, whichever comes first. So much for those youtube downloads! Anyway, last year I schlepped over to French Harbour and the megaplaza for a TIGO stick. If it is possible to do this online, nobody I talked to knows how.

This time, I went into the nice lady at the farmacia and she clicked a few numbers on her phone and needed the phone number associated with the stick - and it was recharged in just a couple of minutes on a Sunday morning.

The second farmacia I visited is the one across from the Petrosun - the gas station below Eldons on the main road at Coxen Hole. It was closed Sunday morning, but open on Monday when I visited. This is a larger store with lots of workers and a lot more and varied stock. They had a better selection of sizes and prices - and as previously mentioned, their drug prices were typically around 25% cheaper than the other place on my admittedly narrow range of comparisons.

By the way... when the issue of farmacias and prescriptions and drug prices came up on the forum some months back, one of our knowledgeable-but-somewhat-snide contributors said all the drugs would be a lot cheaper than in the States except maybe if you were looking for "the little blue pill." I didn't know what that mean so I Googled and learned this was a reference to Viagra.

Inquiring minds want to know!

While I was having my TIGO stick renewed (no snide comments, please) I noticed the glass case below had a colorful and numerous display of condoms. Next to it were Viagra and Cialis pills. So, for research purposes... the Viagra was about 1800 lemps for 4 100mg pills. Thats ballpark $22.50 a pill! I had no idea!

I had my friend back in the states call our discount mailorder pharmacy and they confirmed that our insurance plan doesn't cover Viagra and that the same 100mg pills are about $30. Who knew?!

When I went to the other farmacia I checked, and the prices were lower than the first. I didn't write it down, but I think it was about $17.50 per pill there. The guy also suggested looking at the Cialis, because the generic is available at much reduced price. A single dose of Tadalfil is 20mg and costs around $7.50... compared with a US price reported to be around $30 for the brand name Cialis.

Bottom line - prescription drugs are available without prescription. I make no guarantees about their authenticity - there are lots of reports of counterfeit drugs in developing countries. I do know that the pills we bought... and all the pills we looked at in these two farmacias... have the packaging and looks of the real things. I happened to see a fresh box of amoxicillin opened - a guy wanted just four pills... appeared that's all he could afford. They looked exactly like the amoxicillin I had in my first aid kit from the US and that looked exactly like the amoxicillin I picked up to supplement my supply in Nairobi in January. (The pills were cheaper in Kenya, btw.) The capsules are pretty distinctive in color...

so I make no claims to the quality of the drugs - just comparing the prices...

and don't forget the TIGO tip. A friend on the island lends me his spare stick, so I don't know what that costs. I believe charging the stick for 30 days/5.4 Gb... whichever comes first... was about $22. There are plans with more data, but not more time... if I'm careful about downloading, I don't run out. It is advertised as a 4G connection... but only 3G is actually available in Roatan. It is surprisingly fast... we even video Skype with not so bad quality.

Roatan Cruise Ports – Do you Know Where You’re Going?

roatan cruise port pharmacy

Sharing is caring!

Do you have a cruise planned that includes Roatan? Roatan is a popular cruise ship stop in the Western Caribbean, typically on the same itinerary as ships sailing to Belize, Costa Maya, and/or Cozumel. In this post, I’ll share a little about this exciting port of call, which cruise port you will be arriving at, and some great options for spending your cruise port day in Roatan .

Tell me about Roatan, Honduras

Roatan is part of the Bay Islands (along with Guanaja, and Utila.) and is approximately an hour and fifteen-minute ferry ride away from Mainland Honduras.

Roatan’s claim to fame is its coral reef and it is well-earned. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is world-renowned. It is the largest of its kind in the northern hemisphere and the second largest worldwide. Only the Great Barrier Reef is larger in scope and size than the reef in the waters around Roatan Island. Snorkeling and diving here are amazing but more on that soon.

Cash is King

The local currency is the Lempira but U.S. currency is widely accepted on the island. However, the banks are quite particular about the condition of the bills therefore vendors will not accept bills that are torn or in poor condition. Many large stores and restaurants do accept credit cards, but not all, so it’s good to be prepared.

Spanish is also the predominant language although within the Coxen Hole area, you can get by with English.

Is it Safe?

Many cruisers ask if Roatan is safe to visit and the answer is yes. While mainland Honduras has deep struggles with crime, Roatan boasts a low crime rate. This may be due in part to a very visible police and security presence on the island. I suppose they focus on prevention and it seems to be working.

As a traveler, you may be taken aback by armed security posted on the beach, but it’s just their way. We spoke to one security officer during our time at Bananarama Beach Resort and he mentioned that they rarely have any problems other than a vendor getting a little pushy for a tourist’s liking.

There are two cruise ports in Roatan

As a cruise passenger visiting Roatan, Honduras, it’s important to note that there are two separate cruise ports, depending on which cruise line you’re sailing with Port of Roatan and Mahogany Bay and they are only a couple of miles apart, and on the west side of the island.

Port of Roatan

The Coxen Hole cruise ship dock (Port of Roatan) is used by cruise ships from Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, MSC Cruises, and others. (Basically, all cruise lines that are not included in the Carnival Corporation.)

Port of Roatan/Coxen Hole – located in the capital city of Coxen Hole in the southwest of the island.

image of Town Center, Port of Roatan sign

It is named after the pirate Captain John Coxen/Coxon due to the fact that during the 17th century, Roatán was once home to over 5,000 pirates living all through the island.

If you arrive in Coxen Hole, you’ll likely want to have a plan in mind for how you spend your day. While there is a small port shopping area and even a new place where you can get a souvenir stamp for your passport, there is little to do in the port area itself. However, there are many options a short drive away.

If you sailing with Carnival, Princess, Holland America, or one of the Carnival Corp. cruise lines? Then you’re headed to Mahogany Bay.

What is Mahogany Bay?

The Mahogany Bay port is located in Dixon Cove, between Coxen Hole and French Harbour along Roatan’s south shore. The port can dock two ships at a time.

Mahogany Bay is owned by Carnival Corporation, so all Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Regent Seven Seas, and Oceania ships dock there. Additionally, Costa Cruises, Thomson Cruises, and P&O Cruises also dock at Mahogany Bay.

Things to do AT the cruise port (within walking distance)

Carnival brand cruisers seem to really enjoy Mahogany Bay for its ease and convenience.

Mahogany Bay offers easy egress and exit for transportation companies. It also offers excellent restaurants and waterfront activities. Its man-made beach is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and paddle boarding. Mahogany Bay offers restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops as well. Basically, cruisers who are not interested in exploring the island, can walk off of the ship and still have a great day.

Spending Your Cruise Port Day in Roatan.

Regardless of which cruise port your ship utilizes, there are many things you can do to have a great day in Roatan.

Some of the many popular ways to spend your cruise port day in Roatan include: Snorkeling/Diving – If you are a certified diver, contact one of the local dive shops and check out the many dive sites around the island. If you want to keep it simple and snorkel right off the beach, there are great options for that as well.
