The updated Roscommon Walks & Cycleways Booklet is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and Roscommon County Council under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme and was launched by Aoife and Lisa OâRourke at the Demesne, Castlerea, County Roscommon.
The sisters, both boxers from the village of Tarmon, near Castlerea, received the Freedom of Roscommon in December 2022 in recognition of their outstanding achievements in their sporting field. In 2022, at age 20, Lisa O’Rourke won a gold medal on her debut at the World Championships in Istanbul, which her sister Aoife represented Ireland at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 and won her second European gold medal in 2022.
Commenting on the launch, Lisa Joy, Tourism Officer at Roscommon County Council, says,
âThis Roscommon Walks and Cycleways Book is a wonderful resource which sets out to inform on the abundance of walks and cycle routes located throughout County Roscommon.
So, choose a trail thatâs right for you and stay active during the Autumn and Winter months. Whether it be through a native woodland bustling with wildlife, or along tranquil shorelines that gently nourish our extensive flora and fauna, Roscommon is the perfect place to get active in nature.â

Lough Key Forest Park, County Roscommon
This county in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands is a well-kept secret amongst its neighbours. It’s a tranquil oasis that may not be a household name like the other big county stars, but it should be, because there’s more than meets the eye in County Roscommon.
For example, it's the birthplace of Ireland's first president, Douglas Hyde, and actor, Chris O’Dowd. O’Dowd is proud of his Roscommon roots if his twitter handle @BigBoyler is any indication. He's referring to his childhood stomping ground of Boyle, a busy market town located in the north of the county.
County Roscommon is full history, heritage and adventure. You’d be mad to miss it on your journey around the island of Ireland!
Every crag and gnarled tree and lonely valley has its own strange and graceful legend attached to it.” Douglas Hyde, first President of Ireland
County Roscommon’s unique history has led to some interesting sites, museums, and landmarks around the county.
After a lifelong fascination with local history, husband and wife, Charlie and Bridie Finneran, opened up the Derryglad Folk & Heritage Museum on the border of County Roscommon and Westmeath in 1998. At the museum, you’ll find yourself transported back in time through the everyday objects of rural life in Ireland, such as farm machinery, trades, and tools, and memorabilia.
L-R: Boyle Abbey; Arigna Valley; Arigna Mining Experience; Derryglad Folk & Heritage Museum
Learn all about the local men who sustained their communities from the 1700s through to the late 1900s on a tour around the Arigna Mining Experience . Along the way, try to imagine how the men worked in these cramped conditions, and how, at its peak, they provided up to 55,000 tonnes of coal from the mines to the local power station before it closed in 1990.
If you’re interested in this aspect of Roscommon’s history, then why not explore the Miner’s Way & Historical Trail , which connects the mine to neighbouring counties, Leitrim and Sligo. Some of these paths would have been used by the miners themselves on their way to and from work.
The route itself is 65.7km long and takes up to five days to complete, but you can pick and choose where you want to check out. While on the trail, be mindful that you will be on working farmland and follow the Leave No Trace principles.
Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands
Roscommon is part of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands. Have you dived into it yet?
You have to thank the local ruling family at the time, the McDermotts, for the impressive 12th century Boyle Abbey . It was built by Cistercian monks under their patronage, and was one of the leading Cistercian foundations in Connacht.
Today, you can learn all about its history at the interpretative centre here, including when it was seized by Cromwellian forces in the 17th century.
Before Roscommon Castle even had its final brick in place in 1290, it was attacked and burned multiple times. The castle constantly changed owners, coming into the hands of the O’Connors until the 16th century. Ultimately, it was seized again, and was burned down in 1690, before gradually falling into disrepair.
The castle is free to enter, and can be explored along with a visit to the adjacent Loughnaneane Park, a gorgeous 14-acre site, which is home to a bountiful display of flora and fauna as well as a wildlife conservation area.
Strokestown House, County Roscommon
For an entirely different slice of Roscommon history, head to Strokestown Park. Here, on a historic estate that includes beautiful walled gardens and wild woodlands , you’ll find Strokestown House, which offers a vivid snapshot of what life was like back in centuries past in a Palladian mansion.
Strokestown Park is also home to the National Famine Museum . The exhibition here dives into the parallel lives of the hungry tenants and their landlord who governed them during the tragic period of the Great Famine of Ireland. While here, you’ll find out how this period of history changed Ireland forever, and why millions of people had to leave their homeland behind.
L-R: Cycling Lough Key Forest & Activity Park; Rathcrogan; Cruising by McDermott’s Castle Island; The Gaelic Chieftain
The standout star of County Roscommon has to be the Royal Site of Rathcroghan . This archaeological site is steeped in Irish mythology, and has witnessed over 5,500 years of history.
At the visitor centre, you’ll find exhibits about the history of Rathcroghan, where experts have discovered artefacts from over 240 archaeological sites, stretching back to the Iron and Bronze Age. They’ve also found medieval settlements, standing stones, burial mounds, ringforts, and even the “Gate to Hell”, the Oweynagat (Cave of the Cats).
This was the ancient capital of Connacht, where a great number of people assembled for ceremonies, feasting and celebrations. The first mention of Queen Meave (Mebh), the legendary Queen of Connacht, is here at the Oweynagat, too!
Lough Key Activity Centre – Zipit
It may not have a coastline, but it does have 32 islands! Sail and cruise boats glide around lakes including Lough Ree, and rivers such as the mighty Shannon and the Suck are enticing locations for fishermen, too.
But at the heart of the county lies Lough Key. Surrounded by 350 hectares of woodland, the old Rockingham family's 19th century estate has today been transformed into a fantastic forest park .
Can you see yourself swinging like Tarzan through an aerial adventure course, exploring servants' tunnels, trying your hand at puzzles in Boda Borg , taking a boat tour past small islands, or tackling the tree canopy walk? These are just some of the fun activities on offer...
So, get out and explore County Roscommon, while you still have the whole place to yourself!

Creative Ireland
The Roscommon Culture and Creativity Strategy 2023â2027 will prioritise the themes of 'People, Place, Practice and Partnership', in order to extend opportunities for creative participation, inclusion, and expression within communities. This strategy sets out Roscommonâs part in the next Creative Ireland five-year journey, centred on a model of wellbeing, social cohesion, and economic development, recognising the integral part creativity and culture play in the economic and social sustainability of County Roscommon.
Roscommon is rich in culture and heritage â a county of castles and kings, of stately homes, spectacular landscapes, and natural beauty. The county is the location of the birthplace of Halloween, the geographical centre of Ireland, and the longest shoreline of the River Shannon, inspiring an abundance of water and mythically themed creative projects. Developing the cultural landscape in the county has been to the fore of the work of the Culture and Creativity Team as part of the Creative Ireland Programme â a team of local cultural agents, operating as part of the local authority structure, supporting a wider community of practitioners, educators, creatives and audiences â delivering the framework for culture and creativity across Roscommon. Culture in Roscommon crosses traditional and contemporary forms, offering a range of platforms for connecting people and creativity at high-quality professional arts events. Multiple creative opportunities are embraced in smaller scale, community-run festivals in towns and villages across the county, drawing on the collective imagination and creativity of the county. We believe that culture is not static; that it is always changing and evolving. We believe in access by all to all our programmes. We believe strongly in collaboration and in the ongoing need to share resources, to share ideas, and to create opportunities for and with everyone in order to play a part in creatively shaping our county. Artists, writers, and creatives have always expressed our collective identities in story, song, dance, ritual, celebration, and commemoration. In embracing Creative Ireland, Roscommon County Council recognises the relationship between creativity, participation, place, and people.

Our Strategy
In 2017 a Culture Team was established in Roscommon County Council comprising of staff from the Arts, Heritage, Library, Local Enterprise Office and Community and Enterprise departments. The Culture Team together with the Creative Ireland Project Office hosted an open meeting which provided an opportunity to explore how best to increase access to and engagement with the arts, heritage and creative industries in the county. The input from these discussions informed the preparation of Roscommon County Councilâs Culture and Creativity Strategy 2018-2022. ... This Strategy is an overarching plan for the county and relates to and links with the Arts and Heritage Plans and the Library service. The strategy focuses on supporting creatives of all disciplines, enhancing creativity in all children and young people of the county, enriching public engagement with culture in all its forms and continued strategic and sustainable investment in cultural infrastructure. The Creative Ireland vision for Roscommon is that every person will have an opportunity to experience, enjoy and engage with the limitless nature of County Roscommonâs rich creative vein.

New Roscommon Just Transition Fund Tourism Activator appoined
Roscommon County Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Gillian McGarry as its new EU Just Transition Fund (JFT) Tourism Activator.
A native of Tulsk, Ms McGarry has considerable and wide ranging experience in the tourism, business multinational and community sectors.
Her appointment follows FĂĄilte Irelandâs roll-out of the EU Just Transition Fund Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme for Irelandâs Midlands 2023-2026.
Following her appointment, Ms. McGarry is hosting a special information meeting about both her role and the EU JTF fund on Monday, March 11, from 6pm to 8pm in Gleesonâs Townhouse Restaurant, Roscommon town.
The seminar will consider potential funding opportunities for SMEâs and community groups in an effort to identify potential business opportunities that are locally and tourism led.
Ms McGarry said she was excited by the opportunities presented by her new role: âThe EU JTF has the potential to regenerate and transform communities, not only in Roscommon but throughout the midlands region, which our county can also benefit from.
âThe fund also has the potential to create new jobs in rural and smaller towns in our county. The seminar is about listening to communities as to what they want and need and responding to that need. The event is âa call to armsâ and essentially an invitation to all groups that through this fund we are âopen for businessâ!â remarked Ms. McGarry.
In her role, Ms. McGarry will assist eligible entities in accessing funding to deliver regenerative tourism led projects in the county. She will also be working closely with Roscommon County Councilâs Tourism Officer Lisa Joy and other key stakeholders in supporting tourism ideas that are sustainable, enduring, cost effective and visitor driven.
The EU JFT programme is also designed to build business skills and know-how to advance the professional development of eligible businesses. It will also help transform tourism across county Roscommon which is part of Failte Irelandâs Hidden Heartlands brand.
The deadline for expressions of interest is June 30 and once deemed eligible, groups throughout Roscommon will have the opportunity to make an application to the fund, up to December 30 this year.
The programme supports communities across Europe who have been the most negatively affected by the transition to climate neutrality by addressing employment, economic, social and environmental issues to ensure the transition is fair and just, and nobody is left behind.
âThis is a great opportunity for new and existing local businesses to support new business ideas with the necessary capital to enhance our tourist amenities are sustainable, future proofed and environmentally conscious way as a driver of local economic regenerationâ, said Ms. McGarry.
A Bachelor of Commerce (International) graduate from NUI Galway, Ms. McGarry holds a Master of Business from TUS Athlone. She has a professional background in the financial sector having worked with a number of multinational organisations.
