A Russian man has died after being mauled by a shark off one of Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, Egyptian and Russian authorities have said.

Egypt’s environment ministry said the man was killed on Thursday after being attacked by a tiger shark in the waters near the city of Hurghada. Authorities closed off a 46-mile (74km) stretch of the coastline, announcing it would remain off-limits until Sunday.

The ministry later said it had caught the shark and was examining it in a laboratory to try and determine the reasons for the rare attack.

The Russian consulate in Hurghada identified the man as a Russian citizen but did not give his name. Russia’s Tass state news agency said the person killed was a Russian man born in 1999 who lived in Egypt full-time and was not a tourist.

A video circulating online, purportedly of the attack, shows a man thrashing about in the water before being repeatedly attacked by a shark circling around him, then being dragged under.

A diver who arrived on the scene just after the attack said people had rushed to help the victim after a lifeguard from a nearby hotel raised the alarm, but were not able to reach him in time.

In a statement posted on its official channel on the Telegram messaging application, the consulate urged Russian tourists to be vigilant when in the water and to strictly adhere to any swimming bans imposed by local authorities.

Shark attacks are rare in the Red Sea coastal regions. In 2022, however, two women – one Austrian and one Romanian – were killed within days of each other in shark attacks at Hurghada.

A father and son trip to the beach turned into tragedy when a tiger shark mauled the younger man at a popular beach spot in Egypt.

Vladimir Popov, 23, was spending the day by the Red Sea in Hurghada, replete with white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue water. However his dip into the sea, while surrounded by other tourists, soon turned into a horror show as a shark swam towards Mr Popov.

His father Yury watched on helplessly as the 10ft shark circled around Russian Mr Popov who screamed out “papa, papa” as he was dragged under the water and holidaymakers scrambled from sea.

Locals would go on to exact revenge after capturing a shark and publically killing it.

Witnesses said the sea had turned a deep crimson red around Mr Popov as the shark toyed with his body for more than two hours. After a time the 23-year-old’s screams for his father stop.

Footage from the incident showed the beast’s fin and tail appearing from the water, as a beachgoer shouted out: “It is eating his remains now.”

“We went to the beach to relax. My son was attacked by a shark. It all happened in seconds,” Yury told local media.

“What kind of help can you give? This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds, he was just dragged under the water.”

The beast was then lifted out of the sea in a net and taken to the beach on a small boat where it was bludgeoned to death.

Video footage shows people hitting the fish over the head with what appeared to be a metal pole or a stick.

It appeared to be alive as it thrashed on the sand with a hook in its eye.

Authorities closed off a 46-mile stretch of the coastline, announcing it will remain off limits until Sunday.

Yury added: “This is an absolutely ridiculous coincidence, because it is a safe beach. There are ships and yachts around.

“It's never happened there. They usually attack on wild beaches. It's just some kind of evil fate."

A young Russian man was mauled to death by a shark off one of Egypt's Red Sea resorts, according to Egyptian and Russian authorities.

The man, named as Vladimir Popov by Russian media, died after being attacked by a tiger shark in the waters near the city of Hurghada, Egypt's environment ministry said.

Footage circulating online, purportedly of the attack, shows a man thrashing about in the water before being repeatedly attacked by a shark circling him and then dragged under.

The ministry later said the shark had been caught and was being examined in a laboratory to try to determine the reasons for the rare attack.

A 46-mile (74km) stretch of the coastline was closed off by authorities, who announced it would remain off-limits until Sunday.

The man's father, Yury Popov, was forced to watch the attack helplessly from the shore as the predator circled the 23-year-old and eventually dragged him under the water.

Speaking to the 112 media outlet following his son's death, Mr Popov said: "We went to the beach to relax. My son was attacked by a shark, it all happened in seconds."

He said no other family members were near his son at the time of the attack to help, but added: "What kind of help can you give? This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds, he was just dragged under the water."

Mr Popov described the attack as an "absolutely ridiculous coincidence" because the beach is known to be safe.

"There are ships and yachts around. It's never happened there. They usually attack on wild beaches. It's just some kind of evil fate," he said.

Other videos being shared online show the tiger shark being caught alive and dragged ashore by a boat following the attack, before being clubbed to death.

It is considered rare for shark attacks to take place in the coastal areas of the Red Sea.

However, there were two fatal incidents of shark attacks last year in Hurghada within a few days of each other, resulting in the deaths of Austrian and Romanian tourists.

Russian Consul-General Viktor Voropayev told state-owned TASS news agency that the Egyptian authorities had confirmed to him the death of the Russian national who was born in 1999.

“The victim was not a tourist, but a permanent resident of Egypt,” Voropayev told the news agency.

A diver who arrived on the scene just after the attack said people had rushed to help the victim after a lifeguard from a nearby hotel raised the alarm, but were not able to reach him in time.

The 23-year-old Russian national had gone swimming in the waters off his resort near the city of Hurghada when a shark emerged underwater and grabbed him.

The attack forced the Egyptian authorities to close off a 74-kilometre (46-mile) stretch of the coastline, announcing it will remain off limits until Sunday.

Officials from the Russian Consulate in Hurghada identified the man as a Russian citizen but did not give his name.

A nearly minute-long video appearing to be of the brutal shark attack shows the man being suddenly pulled down into the water, only for him to resurface and desperately fight off the shark when suddenly the water around him goes red.

He also screams out “papa” and cries out loudly as the shark repeatedly circles and comes back in to attack. Later in the video a witness is heard saying “it is eating his remains now” as a small ship sails in the distance.

The environment ministry in Egypt later said it had caught the shark and was examining it in a laboratory to try to determine the reasons for the rare attack.

Images shared on social media showed the body of the bloodied shark lying on a sheet on land.

A tiger shark was clubbed to death in a savage revenge attack after the beast killed a tourist at a popular resort in the Red Sea.

Tourists watched in horror as Vladimir Popov, 23, was dragged under the water and mauled to death by the 10ft “meat grinder” shark in Egypt’s Hurghada.

Popov’s helpless dad Yury was watching from the shore as his son desperately screamed “papa, papa” while the predator hunted him.

Witnesses said the shark savaged Popov before toying with his body for a harrowing two hours in the water.

“It’s eating his remains now,” one witness can be heard saying in footage of the horrifying incident, the New York Post reported.

Footage then showed the beast being hauled out of the sea on a small boat in a net before being dumped on the beach and ferociously beaten.

The shark appeared to be alive as it writhed on the sand with a hook in its eye.

The video showed a man savagely smashing it over the head with what appeared to be a stick or a metal pole.

Egyptian authorities said they caught the shark that attacked the Russian man.

Researchers are now probing whether the shark was responsible to any previous incidents in the area.

Popov was on a long stay in Egypt - possibly avoiding the call up to Putin’s war in Ukraine.

His dad Yury told local media: “We went to the beach to relax. My son was attacked by a shark. It all happened in seconds.

“This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds... it is just some kind of evil fate.”

Initial reports suggested Popov was with his girlfriend at the time - but local media reports said she’s currently in Russia.

It’s understood a woman who was also in the water managed to escape.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of a citizen from a shark attack.

When the incident happened, voices in the sea pleaded: “Swim away, swim away! Quick! A shark!”

One eyewitness said: “It was about seven metres from the shore.”

Another said: “The shark appeared, and immediately bit the man.

“He tried to swim away from the shark, but he couldn’t.

“It dragged the body for two hours. It constantly dragged him under the water.”

Russian tourists have been told to be vigilant in the popular resort and follow the instructions of hotel staff.

It comes after a 37-year-old tourist was ambushed by a shark at a Red Sea resort in Aqaba, Jordan, in June 2021.

The man was parasailing when he suddenly began to graze the ocean.

A shark then leapt from the water and chomped his leg - and the tourist miraculously managed to not get dragged beneath the water.

He was left brutally bitten and sustained serious injuries from the attack.

And in July last year, a tourist was mauled to death by a shark in Sahl Hasheesh, Egypt.

The 68-year-old snorkeller had apparently told her partner she was just going back into the water “for a moment” before being killed.

Her lifeless body was pulled out of the sea after being located on a reef, according to horrified eyewitnesses.

Fatal shark attack of Russian man near Red Sea resort purportedly caught on video

CAIRO − A Russian man died after being mauled by a shark on Thursday off one of Egypt's Red Sea resorts, Egyptian and Russian authorities said.

Egypt's Environment Ministry said the man was killed after being attacked by a tiger shark in the waters near the city of Hurghada. Authorities closed off a 46-mile stretch of the coastline, announcing it will remain off-limits until Sunday.

The ministry later said it had caught the shark and was examining it in a laboratory to try and determine the reasons for the rare attack.

The Russian Consulate in Hurghada identified the man as a Russian citizen but did not give his name.

Shark attacks are rare in the Red Sea coastal regions. However, in 2022, two fatal attacks in Hughada within days,  killing an Austrian  and  a Romanian tourist .

Egypt has in recent years sought to revive the vital tourism sector, hurt by years of political instability, the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

Tiger sharks are large species that reside in tropical and temperate waters and are among sharks most cited by the International Shark Attack File for unprovoked attacks on humans.

Predator to prey: Shark swallows Russian tourist, meets an unexpected fate

Vladimir popov was enjoying a swim in the red sea when the 10-foot tiger shark suddenly targeted him..

In a tragic incident that unfolded at one of Egypt's popular Red Sea resorts, a 23-year-old Russian tourist Vladimir Popov met a horrifying fate as he was attacked and eaten alive by a tiger shark. The incident, witnessed by horrified onlookers, occurred on June 8 in the city of Hurghada.

According to New York Post, Vladimir Popov was enjoying a swim in the Red Sea when the 10-foot tiger shark suddenly targeted him. As the shark pounced on its unsuspecting victim, tourists watched in shock and horror as Popov was dragged underwater and brutally mauled to death.

The shocking attack lasted for approximately two hours. The incident left the beachgoers traumatised as they grappled with the terrifying sight before them.

Following the horrific event, local beachgoers in Egypt took matters into their own hands and unleashed a brutal act of revenge on a tiger shark, which they believed was responsible for the death of Popov. Several videos have surfaced online that showed a group of people driving boats out into the sea and capturing the animal in a net before savagely clubbing it to death.

The slain shark was later dissected by specialists to confirm its identity. The body parts of the unfortunate victim were later discovered inside the belly of the shark responsible for the attack.

Russia's Tass news agency said that Popov was born in 1999 and lived in Egypt full-time.

In a statement posted on its official channel on the Telegram messaging application, the consulate urged Russian tourists to be vigilant when in the water and to strictly adhere to any swimming bans imposed by local authorities, as per The Guardian report.

Father describes the moment he helplessly watched as his son was mauled to death by a tiger shark at a beach in Egypt, report says

• A 23-year-old Russian man was killed by a shark in Egypt's Red Sea resort town of Hurghada.
• His father said he watched helplessly as the "meat grinder" animal killed his son in 20 seconds.
• A video of the attack shows the man shouting "papa" as the shark circles near a tourist beach.

The father of a 23-year-old man who was killed by a tiger shark in Egypt described the moment he helplessly watched his son being mauled to death.

"We went to the beach to relax," Yury Popov, a Russian national, told the Telegram news outlet 112 . "My son was attacked by a shark. It all happened in seconds."

A video of the attack shows his son, Vladimir, flailing in the water and calling out "papa" as the shark circles him. People on the beach can be heard screaming in horror. Another video showed people swimming in the water, racing to escape the horrific scene.

Popov said that the situation was all the more shocking because it happened at what he thought was a safe beach.

"What kind of help can you give? This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds. He was just dragged under the water," Popov said.

Egypt's environment ministry confirmed that a man had been killed by a tiger shark in the Red Sea resort town of Hurghada on Thursday.

Vladimir had moved to Hurghada with his father and bought an apartment a few months prior, according to the Russian outlet Baza .

Some reports said that Vladimir's girlfriend escaped the waters and witnessed the attack from the beach — but this has not been confirmed.

Other videos show the animal being captured and taken to shore.

Tiger sharks commonly reach 10 to 14 feet in length and weigh from 850 to 1,400 pounds.

Egypt's environment ministry said that the shark displayed "abnormal behavior" and would be studied to determine whether the animal was linked to previous shark attacks.

There were two deadly shark attacks in Hurghada last year: a Romanian woman and an Austrian woman were killed within days of each other near the area.

It's rare for sharks to attack humans. Only five of the 57 unprovoked shark bites that were reported last year were fatal, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File .

Sharks have been known to attack humans when confused or curious , and scientists have said there is no objective evidence that sharks bite humans because they want to eat them.

Museum specialists in Egypt are mummifying the shark that savagely ate a Russian man swimming at a popular resort beach so that the monstrous predator can be put on display.

Specialists at the Institute of Marine Sciences and the Red Sea Reserves began the embalming process of the animal on Monday, local outlet Al Arabiya reported.

Once the process is completed, the mummified shark will be on display in the institute’s museum.

Body parts belonging to the man who was ravaged, Vladimir Popov, were discovered inside the animal, confirming to authorities they had captured the shark that was involved in Thursday’s attack near the Elysees Dream Beach Hotel at the popular beach resort, Hurghada.

Horrifying video footage of the attack shows Popov, 23, splashing frantically in the ocean before getting dragged underwater as fearful onlookers cry out for help.

Museum specialists extracted half of the Russian man’s body from inside the shark, including his head, chest, and arms. Soon after the accident, fishermen found the other half of his remains out at sea.

The shark nearly consumed all of Popov’s body, but discarded the second half after noticing a fishermen’s boat attempting to come to the scene and help the man.

After pulling the lower half of Popov’s body out of the water, the fisherman chased the shark and caught it in order to have specialists in Hurghada analyze and dissect it.

Officials are hoping that by analyzing the shark they might be able to come up with a plan to prevent other ones from attacking beach-goers.

According to Al Arabiya, Governor of the Red Sea Major General Amr Hanafi is looking into installing nets at some beaches, hotels, and tourist villages in order to prevent sharks from reaching swimmers.

Initial reports claimed that Popov was a Russian tourist, however, Russia’s consul general in Hurghada confirmed Popov had been living in Egypt for several months.

Popov’s girlfriend reportedly managed to escape the water unscathed as bystanders unsuccessfully tried to save him.

The slain man’s father said the pair had “gone to the beach to relax” when all of a sudden, his son “was attacked by a shark.”

The attack left beachgoers stunned, with many waiting to bludgeon the shark to death after a fisherman dragged it ashore.

Video of the scene shows the group horrifically beating the animal, and it concludes with the cameraman even posing for a selfie as the savage scene unfolds in the background.

It’s unclear if the shark that ate Popov was involved in any other reported incidents in the area.

Though shark attacks are rare in the Red Sea coastal regions, last year, sharks killed two women  — an Austrian and a Romanian — just days apart in the same popular tourist location.

Tiger Shark That Likely Ate Tourist In Egypt Beaten To Death By Beachgoers

A tiger shark, believed to be responsible for attacking a Russian tourist in Egypt, was beaten to death by local beachgoers.

A shocking incident took place at one of Egypt's Red Sea resorts in the city of Hurghada last Thursday, where 23-year-old Vladimir Popov was attacked by a tiger shark while he was swimming. It happened in front of shocked tourists. A video circulating on social media captured the terrifying moments as the man struggled, screamed and attempted to escape the shark's relentless attacks.

Eyewitnesses said the tiger shark circled around Popov, toying with his body for approximately two hours before dragging him underwater, Sky News reported. The media outlet later reported that local beachgoers took matters into their own hands after the attack. They ventured out into the sea on boats and managed to capture the shark responsible for his death, using a net.

Another video surfaced online depicting a disturbing scene where a group of people captured the tiger shark, which they believed killed Popov. It shows people in boats capturing a large tiger shark. In the footage, one individual can be seen wielding a metal pole and repeatedly striking the shark's head, while others attempt to forcibly open its mouth, BBC reported.

Egypt's Environment Ministry previously confirmed that the tiger shark involved in the incident had been captured. It said the shark will be taken to a laboratory for examination to understand the factors that may have triggered the rare attack.

It remains unclear whether the captured shark and the one seen in the video are the same. To address concerns and ensure safety, officials have taken action by closing off a 45-mile stretch of the coastline. The restricted area remained off-limits to people intending to swim or participate in water sports activities till Sunday.

Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) are recognized as formidable predators and have the second-highest number of reported attacks on humans, following the white shark. While tiger sharks are generally curious and not typically aggressive when encountered, they are among the top three species commonly associated with shark attacks and fatalities.

Egypt mummifies shark that killed Russian tourist in Red Sea

A team of marine scientists, in cooperation with the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, embalmed a tiger shark which recently killed a Russian tourist in the Red Sea .

Five embalming experts who specialized in the field of mummification of marine organisms took part in the process.

The shark was caught by a number of fishermen in Hurghada, after it attacked a Russian tourist while he was swimming close a beach in Hurghada earlier in June.

The mummified shark is about three meters and 25 centimeters long, female, weighs 500 kilograms, and is about eight years old.

The fish was pregnant when it was caught, as the gestation period of sharks lasts between 15 and 16 months according to a specialist in marine fisheries at the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries Ashraf Seddik.

Tiger sharks are considered the second most dangerous type of sharks after the white shark, he added.

This fish is found in small numbers in the Red Sea and lives at depths of up to 600 meters, and it usually returns to the beaches.

It can catch its prey at a depth of less than two meters, Seddik explained.
