Sacem’s model has performed well in a turbulent world

This is an unprecedented period. The two years of crisis linked to Covid-19 have hit cultural life hard, affecting authors’ rights collections and aggravating creators’ and publishers’ difficulties. At the same time, this crisis has accelerated some of the changes that were already at work. The digital explosion is generating profound changes in the way works are exploited, consumed and created.

In this context, Sacem is transforming, reinventing itself and seizing today's challenges as opportunities for tomorrow.

Creativity is

In times of crisis.

Culture has never been so important in our lives. Artistic creations unite and uplift us. They create a common heritage and are at the heart of the social bonding that we missed so much in 2020.

Playing, sharing our music and our emotions, being near you. This is a physiological mission for us, it's our reason for living. Taking that away from us for too long would be like severing all of our limbs.

Quote background

When artists can no longer perform on stage, the entire creative economy is affected. Authors, composers and publishers are the very first link in the chain, and they have been hit hard by this unprecedented crisis.

Shelter in a storm

Our values, our history and our expertise have proven their strength. Collective management has demonstrated how effectively it can protect our 182,520 members and support all the organisations that have entrusted us with their repertoires.

Representing authors

Representing authors,

And publishers.

Together with professional organisations, we mobilised to obtain aid and support measures, going further than ever to protect the interests and stand up for the rights of our members.

Empathy for our clients

for our clients

Authors, composers, publishers and their partners, music users, have this in common: long months of silence prevented them from working. The unprecedented collapse of royalty collections is linked to the forced inactivity of thousands of economic actors who give life to musical creation.

Growth accelerates

Accelerates

Sacem is continuously improving its digital performance: it anticipates changes in usage, identifies new sources of revenue and negotiates agreements to ensure fair remuneration for its members.

Denied a stage

To better serve its members, Sacem is accelerating the implementation of its strategic plan. The transformation and development plan, launched in September 2020, aims to make Sacem’s model even more effective, innovative and efficient.

Approachable and proactive

Transparent and fully engaged in the service of members and clients.

Innovative and constantly evolving to adapt to new economic models.

360º vision

Leader in collective management and influential in the music globally.

International

Competitive and partnering with major publishers and CMOs.

A model for the defence of copyright and collective management.

Fully committed to increasing the value of its members’ rights, Sacem relies on a high performing regional network, innovative IT systems and state-of-the-art technology. Revenue collected for 2020 totalled 988.5 million euros (-12% compared to 2019) and 1.4 billion euros including mandates.

Sacem launched an emergency aid plan based on three measures: a 6 million euro emergency fund, exceptional royalty advances and a reinforcement of the existing aid programme for publishers. Invoices and debits from clients were suspended.

SUPPORTING ARTISTS BY PLAYING THEIR MUSIC

In May, Sacem called on radio stations, broadcasters, platforms and others involved in the music industry to show support for our creators in the #ScèneFrançaise by playing musical works produced and recorded by our members. The mobilisation via Internet and social networks included a dedicated website and widespread use of the #SceneFrancaise hashtag by authors, composers, publishers and music lovers.

PAYMENT FOR LIVESTREAMS

With concert halls closed and festivals canceled, artists turned to livestreaming to broadcast their music and connect with fans. In support of these efforts, Sacem set up in June a mechanism to pay creators royalties for broadcasting livestreams on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

Highlights - International partnerships

INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS

The South Korean authors' society Komca (Korean Music Copyright Association) entrusted Sacem with a mandate for the pan-European management of its members' online rights. Meanwhile, Sacem renewed its agreement with Socan (the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) for the management of rights for Internet services and extended the agreement to mechanical reproduction rights.

SOLIDARITY WITH THE LEBANESE

Sacem - present in Lebanon with Sacem Liban, society of Lebanese and Franco-Lebanese authors composers and publishers - moved to support to the victims of the tragedy that hit Beirut. In solidarity with the Lebanese people, Sacem donated 10,000 euros to the Lebanese Red Cross. It also supported Mika's charity livestream concert and partnered with Unis Pour le Liban and the Fonds de Solidarité pour le Liban, in support of the arts and culture community in Beirut.

AN AGREEMENT WITH TWITCH

A September agreement allowed authors, composers and publishers who are members of Sacem to be paid when their music is shared or livestreamed on the Twitch platform. With venues closed, and tours and concerts cancelled, many creators and artists took to Twitch to meet their fans and host new live music experiences.

Highlights - Journée de Solidarité

DAY OF SOLIDARITY IN SUPPORT OF THE #SCENEFRANCAISE

To coincide with its Grand Prix awards, Sacem organised, with the support of its partners, a great day of solidarity in support of music scene - authors, composers and music publishers, and more broadly all professionals in the sector. With the entire industry in a critical state, Sacem sounded the alarm and, while reaffirming its commitment to its members, calls for a general mobilization in support of music.

Hightlights - Day of solidarity

SACEM GRAND PRIX 2020

Sacem awarded its Grand Prizes during a ceremony held exclusively online on December 7. The eighteen prize-winners embody the richness, talent and diversity of musical creation. Over five episodes of a web series produced for the occasion, they expressed their solidarity with all the professionals in the sector who were prevented from working. They spoke from the heart about the unprecedented crisis, sharing their concerns and their hopes for music and creation.

Highlights - La culture pour reconstuire l'Europe

EY STUDY: REBUILDING EUROPE THROUGH CULTURE

The new EY study on the cultural and creative industries in Europe detailed the considerable impact of the crisis while at the same time underscoring the key role that this sector could play in the recovery of the economy. Jean-Noël Tronc, as President of Gesac (the European Authors' Societies), spoke with several European Commissioners.

Highlights - Centre national de la musique

MEASURES IN FAVOR OF AUTHORS, COMPOSERS AND MUSIC PUBLISHERS

The National Music Center (CNM) created a compensation fund guaranteeing songwriters and composers a minimum remuneration during the crisis year. The fund is endowed with 5 million euros from the CNM, plus an additional 5 million euros from the Ministry of Culture. The CNM will also provide 2 million euros of direct support to musical creation for projects by songwriters and composers, and 7 million euros of measures dedicated to music publishers. These vital decisions for authors, composers and music publishers demonstrate the central role taken by the CNM after just one year of existence.

French songwriters’ and publishers’ collecting society SACEM unveiled figures that show the growth of the country’s live music sector. The live music sector generated €78.5 million ($104.4 million) of SACEM income, which accounted for 10% of SACEM’s in 2009. This compares to the 12% of SACEM revenue generated by recordings and video. The gap between live and recorded music revenue could keep shrinking as “live revenue is progressing faster than the rest of SACEM collections,” according to SACEM studies manager Claire Giraudin. In 2003, the live music sector generated around 7% of SACEM collections at €52.4 million ($69.7 million). Although the number of concerts is on the rise, with around 154,000 taken into account by SACEM in 2009 compared with 119,000 in 2003, the live sector still depends heavily on tours. Tours account for 3% to 4% of the shows in France, but they generate between 30% to 40% of SACEM’s collections from the live sector. French acts’ presence in the top 20 tours remains strong: 11 in 2003, and 13 in 2005, 2007 and 2009. Veteran French artist Johnny Hallyday’s tour generated the most performance royalties, according to SACEM. The top 20 tours represented a quarter of royalties collected for all live entertainment. The study also stresses the rise of musicals and “golden hits” shows such as RFM Party 80 or Âge Tendre & Têtes de Bois. In 2008, SACEM income from all live entertainment performances – including concerts as well as other events that require licensing for music content – decreased 2.6% to €132.4 million ($176.4 million). But that is expected to increase for 2009 thanks to major tours by Hallyday and U2.
