While the Philippines is renowned for its islands featuring long stretches of bone-white sand beaches fringed with towering coconut trees, it is still quite a surprise to be captivated by the same scene in a different one. This was precisely how I felt about Samal Island. I honestly thought it would be just another island but it wasn’t. For some inexplicable reason, it exudes a unique captivating charm and atmosphere that sets it apart from the others I’ve visited in the past making our experience truly distinctive. If you also wish to explore the island garden city and a true gem in Davao region, here’s an ultimate Samal Island DIY travel guide to help you with!
About Samal Island
The Island Garden City of Samal island is nestled at Davao gulf, just right across Davao City. Though seemingly a stone-throw away from Davao city, Davao del Sur, Samal island, also referred to as IGaCoS is part of Davao del Norte province. It is a home to numerous beach resorts, stretch of stunning shores, pristine waters, thousands of giant clams locally known as taklobo , caves and sink holes with millions of fruit bats, pearl farms and countless snorkeling and dive sites. These natural treasures made Samal island among the top destinations in Mindanao region especially those who are paying the capital city of the whole region a visit. Cebuano is the language widely spoken by the locals but they could converse fluently in Tagalog or English making it an ideal destination even for foreigners and tourists.
Best Time to Visit Samal Island
The best time to visit Samal Island of course is during the dry season in the Philippines – around March to May . This, however, is a peak season so expect that tourists would flock the island especially on weekends. The ‘Amihan’ season ( September to November ) in the country is also quite ideal as it is an off-peak season, it gets sunny at times and less humid but weather has a tendency to be hit or miss.

- Expenses could be lesser if you will be in big groups
- If you wish to save more or spend less, travel to Samal island on a weekend and join organized island hopping tours. Such tours are not available on weekdays unless you are in a big group. However, take note that the time for each island will be limited and beaches are way more crowded.
Samal Island Practical Travel Tips
- Samal is a very DIY traveler-friendly place even for just a small group of travelers. However, see to it that you’ll compare the rates first (i.e. tricycle, bao-bao or boat) as they have a tendency to vary (worse, jack up) the price.
- You can arrange inland tours with your accommodation’s management or with tricycle drivers just outside the wharfs.
- If you’re traveling solo and you’d like to go on an island-hopping tour but wouldn’t want to splurge, might as well schedule your visit to Samal island during weekends as there are several island-hopping tours during these days. The only downside is that the beaches or islands are a bit crowded.
- If you’re doing DIY for the island hopping tour, make sure that you’ll buy your food first at the market before you go to the boat docking area. There are no restaurants on the islands that you’ll visit.
- This Samal Island DIY Travel guide suggests that you if you have the luxury of time, spend a night or two not just in Samal but also in Talicud island, too.
- If you would also want to visit Talicud island as part of the island-hopping tour, it is best to rent the boat from Kaputian beach.
- Bring reef-friendly sunscreen, dry bags, action camera and snorkeling gear during your island hopping tour.
- There are lots of restaurants and eateries around Babak, Villarica, Penaplata and Kaputian district. However, they usually close at around 8:00 in the evening.
- Banks are situated at Babak distrct. Landbank, BDO and Banco A (BPI) are available.
- Big establishments accept G-cash and card payment. Nevertheless, see to it that you’ll still have enough cash with you especially when traveling around.
- Strictly NO DIVING (especially with fins) in Giant Clams (Taklobo) Sanctuary.
Samal Island DIY Travel Guide, In a Nutshell
This Samal Island DIY Travel Guide rather suggests that you experience IGaCos fully. It has so much to offer that a day wouldn’t suffice to witness its exquisite charm.
Despite the surge of tourists frequently visiting Samal island, we saw with our own eyes how Dabawenyos have been taking a good care out of it as most areas remained unspoiled. We felt like the ecological and entrance fees that we paid were really worth it. However, this doesn’t mean that just because they are taking a good care of it doesn’t absolve the visitors from exercising responsible tourism.

Samal Island, Davao (2024 Complete Travel Guide)
I never knew Davao had access to probably one of the best beaches in the Philippines. I only found out recently that Samal Island was accessible from the city. It’s just 30 minutes away by boat. So if you’re ever feeling stressed at work in Davao, just ride a boat and let the beach take all your worries away.
Sounds good to be true? Nah. It’s real and true.
If I were to compare it to another beach in the Philippines, it would be Kalanggaman Island (sorry, I haven’t been to Boracay yet sooooo). Both islands had fine, white sand and the waters surrounding them are clear and turquoise blue in color.
It’s paradise, I tell you.

Samal Island, officially known as Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) is geographically part of Davao del Norte. It is situated in Davao Gulf and so close to Davao City.
This island paradise is known for its lovely, clear waters. It has also abundant coral reefs and marine life.

There are several Samal Island tour packages being offered. It is best to contact them directly so that you would know what are being covered on the fees on your particular tour.
Most tours includes lunch and the usual food consist of grilled fish, seafoods, fruits and lechon or roasted pig.
If you have special meal requirement like you don’t eat pork, better inform in advance and contact the tour operator so that they can attend to your special meal requirement.
For this particular island hopping that we are joining, it is a group tour and it includes breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks.
Samal Island Hopping Itinerary
When we had our island hopping, this is our itinerary.
We jumped off at Sta. Ana Wharf in Davao City. This wharf is located just beside Magsaysay Park.
If you are bringing car with you, Sta. Ana Wharf provides parking space for a fee of only 20 pesos.
From Sta. Ana wharf, our boat headed right away to Talicud Island for our first stop.
1st stop – Coral Garden
Coral Garden is perfect for diving and snorkeling. You will be treated to a beautiful, bountiful marine life if you snorkel into the seabed in this area.
That is the reason this spot is called Coral Garden. However, I personally have not taken a picture of the coral garden because my camera would not do justice to its beauty.
2nd stop – Dayang Beach
Dayang Beach is a lovely resort in Talicud Island. Island Hopping tours usually stop at this resort.
It has a large sandy area where group can do activities like games if they are having it part of their program.
You can also do swimming in this area as it has clear, clean waters that it is perfect for you to soak yourself on their beach.
3rd stop – Angel’s Cove
Angel’s Cove is another snorkeling spot in Samal Island.
You will get to see lovely and colorful fishes and the rich marine life in this area.
4th stop – Sabang Cliff Dive
If you are the adventurous type and you know how to swim, then take a dive at Sabang Cliff.
There are 3 spots where you can dive from the cliff. The first level is approximately 14 feet, the second level is 21 feet and the highest around 40 feet.
Please note that you should dive with the right position as to not get hurt.
Some of my friends who made the dive and made the wrong landing in the water, got their body aching.
5th Spot – Sand bar
Another stop of the island hopping is the Samal sandbar. It is a lovely sandbar that you can get into if the water is low tide.
So, depending on time, your boat may take this stop or not.
6th Stop – Wishing Island
Our last stop was the Wishing Island. It is a small island where you can climb into and have your wish.
There is also a statue of Mama Mary where you can say a prayer.
The surrounding vista of this Wishing Island is just amazing and awesome.
Sightseeing at Pearl Farm and Malipano Island
Another highlight of this tour is the sightseeing of the popular Pearl Farm Resort and Malipano Island.
This is a luxurious resort that offers one of the best services in Samal Island.
You will get to see the lovely Stilt houses called Samal houses that are built on seawater. You will also get a view of their pavillion and that distinct white sand in the resort.
Getting around Malipano Island gives you a glimpse of the lovely villas by the sea at this lovely island.
Food is one of the most important factors that contribute to a fun and memorable island hopping experience.
As mentioned, part of the tour package, we were served with a hearty breakfast. There is a provision for hot water and coffee to help ourselves if we wanted coffee while on board in the morning.
We were also served with bread and egg, biko with sliced mango, and puto.
Lunch consist of delectable, Filipino favorites. Lechon was served together with tuna panga, kinilaw, guso salad, grilled chicken, seafood boil and shells.
Afternoon snacking consist of cassave cake, ube cake and other sweets.
Best Time for Samal Island Hopping
The best time to go island hopping in Samal Island is during the summer months in the Philippines. That is from March to June when there is not much rain on the island.
Samal island Hopping is so fun and memorable. It gives you lots of places to explore in just one go.
The staff are also approachable and accommodating.
This tour is so worth it.

Table of Contents
Getting to Know Samal Island
Geographical overview.
Samal Island, officially known as the Island Garden City of Samal, is a tropical paradise located in the Davao Gulf of the Philippines. You’ll find that it occupies the land between the major economic hub, Davao City, and the surrounding waters. Known for its pristine beaches, clear waters, and lush landscapes, Samal is both your quintessential retreat and adventure haven, sprawled over a generous expanse that blends bountiful nature with thriving local life.
Cultural significance
The cultural heart of Samal Island beats with the heritage of its indigenous peoples, including the Sama tribe, known for their seafaring lifestyle. Festivals, dances, and traditional arts are an integral part of island life, where communal kinship is cherished. Your visit is more than just a journey through beautiful landscapes; it’s a plunge into a way of life shaped by the ebb and flow of the seas.
Best times to visit
You’ll want to mark your calendars from March to May. These months make up the dry season in Samal, offering the warm, tropical climate that’s perfect for beach escapades and island explorations. With the sun smiling down generously during these months, you’ll have the ideal backdrop for your island getaway.
Preparing for Your Trip
What to pack.
Keep it light and breezy – bring along lightweight clothing, swimwear, and a durable pair of flip-flops. Don’t forget sun protection essentials such as sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. To stay prepared, you should also pack a first-aid kit, insect repellent, and a sturdy water bottle to stay hydrated during your tropical adventure.
Local customs and etiquette
Courtesy and respect go a long way. It’s customary to greet local residents with a smile and a polite “hello” or “kamusta” in Filipino. Remember to take off your shoes when entering someone’s home and dress modestly when away from the beaches, especially if you’re visiting local villages or churches.
Language tips
While English is widely spoken, a few phrases in the local language, Cebuano or Bisaya, will endear you to the residents. Simple pleasantries such as “Maayong buntag” (Good morning) or “Salamat” (Thank you) can help in fostering a warm connection with your hosts.
Arriving on Samal Island
Transport options from davao city.
Upon setting foot in Davao City, you’ll find numerous ways to make the leap to Samal Island. A quick ferry ride will carry you across, with the option of bringing a vehicle should you desire extra mobility. Alternatively, you could opt for a bangka (a traditional outrigger boat), which offers a more local and scenic approach to your crossing.
First impressions and getting situated
As you approach the shores of Samal, the vibrant colors and rhythmic sounds of island life greet you. Your first task is to orient yourself – locating the nearest town and acquainting yourself with the local transport, which includes habal-habal (motorcycle taxis) and tricycles, ideal for the narrower paths and rural stretches of the island.
Check-in: Where to stay
From luxurious resorts to cozy homestays, Samal Island caters to every preference. You can indulge in the upscale comforts of a beachfront property, or select a quaint guesthouse for a more intimate island experience. Regardless of your choice, you’ll find a warm welcome and a place to recharge for the days ahead.
Day 1: Discovering the Beaches
Morning at kaputian beach.
Start your day with a sunrise swim at Kaputian Beach. The soft sands and inviting turquoise waters provide the perfect setting for relaxation and a dose of Vitamin Sea. Lay out your beach mat, grab a book, or simply soak in the ambient serenity that surrounds you.
Afternoon at Pearl Farm Beach Resort
As midday beckons, why not indulge yourself at Pearl Farm Beach Resort? Known for its upscale ambiance and exceptional service, it offers the ideal spot for an exquisite luncheon followed by some leisurely exploration of its exclusive beaches. Dip into the infinity pool or pamper yourself with a spa treatment while the ocean whispers nearby.
Sunset at Talicud Island
Conclude your first day with a trip to the spellbinding Talicud Island, where the sunset sets the sky ablaze with colors. The tranquility here is profound, and the moment the sun kisses the horizon is a grand finish to your beach-hopping day.
Day 2: Adventure and Exploration
Visit to the monfort bat sanctuary.
A visit to the Monfort Bat Sanctuary offers an up-close encounter with one of the world’s largest colonies of fruit bats. The experience is surreal, as you find yourself in the midst of thousands of these nocturnal creatures. Remember to respect their habitat, maintaining a quiet demeanor and not using flash photography.
Hiking up Mount Puting Bato
Ready for a bit of a climb? Mount Puting Bato presents a refreshing challenge with trails that lead you up the island’s highest peak. The panoramic view at the summit is a reward in itself, granting you a sweeping vista of Samal and the sparkling blue waters that cradle it.
Exploring Hagimit Falls
When the tropical heat beckons for a refreshing break, Hagimit Falls welcomes you with its cascading waters and natural pools. A serene spot nestled in verdant foliage, it’s perfect for a cooling dip or simply enjoying nature’s symphony and the gentle serenade of falling water.
Day 3: Culturally Rich Experiences
Village tour and cultural exchange.
On this day, immerse yourself in local traditions with a village tour. Engage in cultural exchange as you observe or partake in everyday routines and crafts. The warm-hearted islanders might show you the ropes of weaving, fishing, or even serenade you with songs passed down through generations.
Traditional crafts and souvenir shopping
Remember your visit with a tangible piece of Samal. Traditional crafts abound, from woven baskets to intricate beadwork. Local markets offer these unique souvenirs, each with a story and the warmth of the artisan’s touch.
Sampling local cuisine
Your cultural journey isn’t complete without relishing the flavors of Samal Island. Treat your palate to a feast of freshly caught seafood, ripe tropical fruits, and other native dishes that offer a taste of the island’s bounty. The kinilaw (a local ceviche) is a must-try, bursting with freshness and zest.
Day 4: Underwater Wonders
Scuba diving in coral garden marine park.
Aquatic adventurers, prepare to be enthralled by the Coral Garden Marine Park. Donning your scuba gear, you can plunge into a world of vivid corals, darting fish, and the calm mystery that lies beneath the waves. It’s an underwater spectacle that leaves you with a profound sense of connection to the ocean’s wonders.
Snorkeling around the Giant Clam Sanctuary
Topping off your marine adventure, the Giant Clam Sanctuary is a sanctuary worth snorkeling around. Here, the gigantic bivalves rest in the shallows, a testament to the island’s commitment to marine conservation. Witnessing these gentle giants up close is an encounter that’s both humbling and awe-inspiring.
Samal Island’s marine conservation efforts
The deliberate efforts to preserve the marine life around Samal Island are palpable. Through sanctuaries and protected areas, you can see the island’s devotion to sustainability. Participate in eco-friendly activities and learn about conservation initiatives that ensure the island’s natural beauty endures for generations to come.
Day 5: Leisure and Relaxation
Spa and wellness retreats.
Taking self-care to the next level, you should indulge in one of Samal Island’s spa and wellness retreats. Herbal treatments, massages, and holistic rituals await, promising to rejuvenate both body and spirit amidst the tranquility of the island.
Luxury resort amenities and activities
If opulence is what you seek, the island’s luxury resorts offer a smorgasbord of amenities and activities. From private pools to jet skiing, every moment can be crafted to fulfill your vision of paradise. Enjoy the plush comforts and impeccable service that makes your stay magnificent.
Private beach picnics and sunset cruising
For an idyllic ending to your stay, arrange a private beach picnic. As the sun descends and colors the sky with pastel hues, a romantic dinner by the shore or a peaceful sunset cruise would be the cherry on top of your unforgettable Samal Island retreat.
Local Delicacies and Dining Spots
Must-try foods on samal island.
Your taste buds are in for a treat with Samal’s local delicacies. Beyond the aforementioned kinilaw, have a go at the grilled tuna, lato (seaweed salad), and the sweet, succulent durian fruit if you’re feeling adventurous. The complexity and freshness of the island’s cuisine will leave a lasting impression.
Recommended restaurants and eateries
While you’ll find no shortage of dining options, don’t miss out on the local eateries where the island’s soul truly shines. From seaside grills to quaint cafes, you get to savor not just the food but also the genuine hospitality that Samal Islanders are known for.
Beachside dining experiences

SAMAL ISLAND HOPPING
Getting to samal island from davao city.
If you are getting to Samal Island from Davao City. There are two options:
Option 1: Take 2 jeepneys from the city to Sta. Ana Wharf and from there, ride the Palboros boat to go to Kaputian, Samal. This is the cheapest option and it will cost around 20 PHP for the jeepneys and 60 PHP for a one-way boat.
Option 2: Take 2 jeepneys to Sasa Wharf and from there, ride the bus. The bus will go on board a vessel ship to Samal. We really love these local experiences in our travels. From Penaplata, you can ride the shared tricycle to Kaputian for 75 PHP each for around 20 kilometers. This can be an option if the weather is bad since the ferry takes only 5 minutes to get to Samal Island.
TRANSPORTATION AROUND SAMAL ISLAND
For those planning to go around the island instead of staying at the resort, there are actually a few transportation options for travelers here. The best way to go around would be to rent a motorbike or to ride a habal-habal , which is basically a motorcycle taxi.
For those traveling in big groups or with children can opt for renting a multicab , which has the structure similar to a jeepney but is much smaller.
ATMS AND CURRENCY IN SAMAL ISLAND
The country uses the Philippine Peso as its currency, where $1 USD = 53.55 PHP . Your dollars and euros can afford a lot of things in the Philippines and the island of Samal.

Travel Guide to Davao City & Samal Island: 2023 DIY Itinerary & Budget
Whenever people talk about Davao City, we either hear from people who’s been there “ pakamusta kay tatay Digong ” or “ masarap ang durian dyan “. Furthermore, it has been marked to people’s minds that Davao is a province in the Philippines with one of the lowest crime rates. It is a place where you can do solo-traveling, ride a taxi at night without sending your families the plate number of the taxi or going to the night market while comfortably using your phones. As a result, traveling to Davao city and Samal Island DIY-way will surely give you the best and safest feeling on Earth!
To give you a bit of information, the region of Davao comprises 5 provinces namely (1) Davao del Norte , (2) Davao Oriental , (3) Davao del Sur , (4) Davao Occidental and (5) Davao de Oro . For my trip in this region, I was only able to explore the 2 provinces and the north and south since I had to go to Surigao for my next backpacking trip. Still, I had the best time seeing one of the stunning beaches and beautiful places in the 2 regions!

Getting to know Davao City and Samal Island
Davao in the Southern part of the Philippines is a very famous city in the Mindanao island and it is know to be home of Durian fruit. During my trip here, I can honestly say that wherever I go I always smell the fruit’s strong odor. And yes I think it’s the Durian capital of the Philippines, if there is such a thing, lol .
Is it safe to travel in Davao? The first thing I noticed during my first day was the incredible discipline and cleanliness of Davao. Courtesy of the previous mayor who is now the President of the Philippines of course. I think it’s really one of the safest places you can go on a vacation in the Philippines plus there are lots of things to do and see here!
What is the best time to visit in Davao City and Samal Island? The best time to visit in Davao is of course during summer or dry season in the Philippines which is from March – June . Although according to a local from Samal Island, they say that any month of the year is a good time to visit since typhoons and monsoon seldom hit the Southern part of the country. This is why they don’t have much reported climate disasters.
Pre-Travel Guide
Backpacking Davao or doing it the DIY-way is easy peasy lemon squeezy! Below are the relevant information you need to know or pre-travel guide for your upcoming trip. Learn how to travel to Davao city and Samal Islanf DIY way with my pre-travel guide!
Manila to Davao City
If you are coming from Manila, you can book flights from any local airlines like Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines and AirAsia for this route. Take note that the only airport in Davao is Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) which is in Davao del Sur. There are no airports that caters public transportation in Davao Oriental or Davao del Norte.

General Santos to Davao City
Alternatively, you can ride a bus from General Santos to Davao via Yellow Bus Line . The fare usually ranges from PHP260.00 – PHP300.00 and the travel time is 3-4 hours. Below is the schedule and rates of the Yellow Bus Line.
Bislig to Davao City
Another famous gateway to get to Davao by land travel is from Bislig in Surigao del Sur. From Bislig, just proceed to the bus terminal and ride a bus bound to Davao Ecoland Terminal. The travel time is 4-5 hours and the fare is ranging from PHP360.00 – PHP410.00 .
How to get around Davao City and Samal Island?
Getting around Davao is easy especially in the city itself. For public transportation there are taxis available, jeepney , bus , van and tricycles too. For budget solo travelers, the jeepney is best to lessen the fees. But if you are in a group, therefore your best option is to ride a taxi to reduce the hassle and split the fare in the group.
Take note that traffic is also frustrating in Davao just like in Manila. In my experience, I traveled from Roxas City going to the port to Samal Island for about an hour. It was truly exhausting and a waste of time for me especially that I am in a time-sensitive trip. Better avoid the rush hours and be extra early if you need to be somewhere else.
How to get around in Samal Island? There are no taxis available in Samal Island. The only mode of transportation available by land is tricycle and habal-habal and bus.
Where to Stay in Davao City and Samal Island?
SEARCH FOR HOTEL DEALS ON AGODA
Where to stay in Samal Island? A word of advice, the accommodations in Samal Island are very pricey compared to the hotels in the city. If you are planning to do an overnight in Samal Island, I highly recommend Camp Holiday Resort. It’s just beside Samal Ferry Terminal and the price for 2 in a single bedroom is reasonable. The location will be very convenient if you need to leave early the next morning.
Furthermore, if you are looking for a resort you may check out in Isla Reta in Talicud Island or Kaputian Beach Resort in Samal Island.
Where to Eat in Davao City and Samal Island?
Roxas Night Market is the place for you when in Davao City! Enjoy grilled seafood of your choice and local street-foods too. If you’re up to try something new and unique, then you must try the durian-flavored foods like the buchi, durian ice cream and durian shake.
Where to eat in Samal Island? For backpackers, don’t worry because there are lots of cheap restaurants in the place! A budget of PHP50.00 – PHP100.00 is already reasonable!
