On top of the volcano walls, a white lining of houses hints at breathtaking views and quaint beauty, which in fact is the stunning Town of Fira . Only those that have been on top of the caldera's rim, and walked to the towns of Fira, Oia, and Imerovigli know that there is no other place in the World like Santorini.

Obviously, exploring these towns is an absolute must as is a visit to the extraordinary archaeological site of Akrotiri , which dates back to 900 BC. Several religious sites, a handful of museums, and a taste of Santo wine should not be missed. If you like to collect beach memories, the black, red, and multicolored sand beaches of Santorini are truly unforgettable.

Where is Santorini Island?

Located between Athens and Crete, Santorini is part of a group of over 200 islands known as the Cyclades , which circularly surround the sacred island of Delos - the legendary birthplace of Apollo and Artemis . Together with Mykonos (which is located very close to Delos), Santorini is one of the most visited cruise ports in the Cyclades for its stunning landscape, archaeological sites, and unusual beaches.

Where Cruise Ships Anchor in Santorini?

Although Santorini is one of the most visited cruise ports in the Mediterranean, with as many as 5 daily visits, cruise ships do not dock in Santorini.

Tender boats, and the piers in Skala and Athinios

As cruise ships anchor at the vast bay surrounding the volcano's crater, passengers will be transported to the small port of Skala on large and comfortable tender boats operated by locals. Skala is right below the town of Fira.

Services and amenities

Cruise passengers will also find in the terminal many activities, diverse entertainment, and shopping (more about all these below). And the following services and amenities:

  • Exchange Office
  • Tourist Information
  • Car and scooter rental
  • Local tours and excursions
  • Duty-Free shops

Top things to do in Santorini on a cruise

Santorini is one of those cruise ports where there are many diverse things to do. For those that enjoy visiting archeological sites, Akrotiri is one the most important sites to visit for it takes you back to the 9th century BC.

The major towns on the rim of the Caldera are a delight and the views are spectacular, be it in Oia, Fira, Firostefani, or Imerovigli. Fira has a number of interesting highlights, countless shops, and excellent restaurants.

There is no shortage of beautiful landscapes, lovely beaches, and delicious restaurants with stunning views overlooking the caldera, making Santorini a must on anyone’s itinerary.

Photo of Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral in Fira is a major highlight for cruise passengers on a cruise to the island of Santorini in Greece.

The wineries of Santorini are famous for their fortified wine (Vino Santo) and the beaches with black sand are out of this world. Here are the top things to do on a cruise to Santorini:

  • Visit Akrotiri.
  • Walk around Fira.
  • Travel to Oia.
  • Taste Vino Santo.
  • Enjoy the multicolored beaches of Santorini.
  • Dive in the Caldera.
  • Taste local cuisine.
  • Shop for local products and luxury jewelry.

Fira is a mandatory town to visit. The cruise traveler should always keep at least a couple of hours to meander the cobblestone streets lined with restaurants and cafes with breathtaking views, unique shops, and a handful of stunning sites to visit.

Fira Highlights

There are three museums not to be missed in Fira: the Archaeological Museum, the Megaron Gyzi Museum, and the Museum of Prehistoric Thira. The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, the Fira Catholic Cathedral, and the Dominican Convent are top religious sites to visit.

The walk to Firostefani or even farther to Imerovigli is a memorable delight for photo enthusiasts and light trekkers. If staying in Fira look out for the following attarctions:

  • Archaeological Museum
  • Megaron Gyzi Museum
  • Museum of Prehistoric Thira
  • Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral
  • Fira Catholic Cathedral
  • Dominican Convent

The charm of Oia

The town of Oia is a must-visit with its marble-paved streets, restaurants, bars, shops, a couple of museums, windmills, and the old Venetian Fort. This charming village was devastated by an earthquake in 1956 and has been completely rebuilt.

Photo of Oia in Santorini.

Oia's Windmills in Santorini

Buildings and tree trunks are painted white every year and stand out against the background of rust color layers of rock, earth, and volcanic ash. Here are the main attractions to enjoy in Oia:

Akrotiri Archaeological Site

The ancient city of Akrotiri lies at the southwestern tip of Santorini and is a fascinating and important archaeological site.

Photo of Akrotiri archeological site, a major highlight for cruise passenegers on a cruise to the island of Santorini in Greece

First settled during the 9th century BC by the Greeks known as Dorians, Ancient Thira comprises a diverse mixture of ruins with architectural elements from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine eras.

After being covered by lava from a volcano eruption in the 15th century, it has now been partially excavated.

Wine-making and Wine Tasting

The local wine-making industry on the island of Santorini has long been thriving, with a number of large vineyards located around the villages inland.

Photo of Santo Wines in Santorini.

Santo Wines in Santorini

The following are the most famous wineries in Santorini, and all cruise lines offer wine tasting tours.

  • Boutari Winery
  • Venetsanos Winery
  • Canava Roussos
  • Santo Wines Winery

Beaches and Water-sport

Santorini volcanic beaches have produced unusual black and red sand that make for dramatically unique landscapes.

The many famous beaches are along the eastern coast, each with its own unique characteristics.

Although Santorini's beaches are not as nice as some of the others in the Greek islands, its volcanic rocks have produced unusual black and red sand that make for dramatic landscapes.

One thing to note is that this sand absorbs the sun’s rays and gets much hotter than golden sand.

On the more popular beaches, umbrellas can be rented, and tavernas and refreshment stands abound. The more secluded beaches are worth a visit, though the paths leading down to them can be tricky. Here are the most popular and famous beaches in Santorini for cruise visitors:

  • Perissa and Perivolos
  • Amoudi Beach
  • Kamari Beach
  • Monolithos beach
  • The Red Beach
  • Aspri Ammos or White Beach
  • Armeni Beach

Other beaches on Santorini worth mentioning include Baxedes , on the northern coast (and uncrowded), although the swimming is not ideal. Cape Columbo beach is a secluded spot with calm waters suitable for swimming, dark sand, tall cliffs, and fine views.

Karterados is undeveloped, Messa Pigadia is small and easy to reach by boat, Pori is picturesque and quiet, Vlihada has pleasant views and dark sand, and Vourvoulos has two adjoining beaches with plenty of privacy.

Snorkeling and diving

The volcanic eruptions created impressive underwater scenery making for plenty of diving opportunities. Diving tours offer trips to shipwrecks, volcanic caverns, and coastal reefs. Snorkeling locations also abound for those wanting to look below the waves with a bit less equipment.

At the dives sites around the edge of the caldera and below the cliffs, there are many colorful sponges, lobsters, groupers, snappers, barracuda, schools of fish, and even octopus.

Scenic Views

Santorini is well known for its breathtaking sunsets from its towering cliffs, particularly when seen from the village of Oia on the island's far northern end. However, very few cruise ships sail late and do not stay in port long enough for cruise travelers to enjoy such a spectacle. When choosing a cruise calling at Santorini, you should pay attention to the sail away times.

How to explore Santorini on a cruise?

All cruise lines visiting Santorini offer excellent tours and excursions of the island to all highlights and top attractions. These excursions (aka Shorex or Cruise Excursions) offered onboard cruise ships can be very advantageous.

For those that like to be toured by guides with excellent knowledge of sites, shore excursions are advisable to visit the archeological site of Akrotiri, an overall visit to the highlights of the Santorini or the charming village of Oia.

However, the latter is also easy to explore on your own. There are four possible ways to discover and enjoy a day at the cruise port of Santorini:

  • Book a Shore Excursion onboard your cruise ship
  • Local tours at the tender pier in the port of Skala
  • On your own to Fira by cable car or donkey (mule)
  • Transfer to Amoudi
  • Rent a car or a scooter

You can rent a car or a scooter at the pier in Skala, but you will pick up your vehicle in Fira, and to get there you will need to go on the Cable Car, on a Donky, or climb 587 steps, which are shared with the smelly equines.

If you wish to visit the archeological site of Akrotiri a shore excursion is the best way to do it as you will have a knowledgeable tour guide accompanying you.

For those that wish to do a full tour of Santorini stopping at all the major highlights, a shore excursion or a tour with local guides is also advisable.

Local tours are also ideal for excursions of the caldera, be it to bathe in the hot springs of the volcano, snorkel, or fishing.

Obviously, all cruise lines offer many diverse shore excursions in Piraeus (Athens). Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean offer as many as 19 shore excursions . Norwegian Cruise Line has available 9 shore excursions . Oceania Cruises organizes 22 shore excursions , and Princess has 27 excursions available.

There are also excursions offered by the following reputable private online services and local tour operators:

  • Shore Trips
  • Shore Excursions Group
  • Tours by Locals
  • Venture Ashore
  • Private Shore Trips

How to get to Fira, Oia, and around Santorini

Unless you choose to stay onboard your cruise ship or by the port of Skala, you will need to go up to the rim of the caldera to explore the attractions of Santorini. Regardless of whether you go on a shore excursion, or explore Santorini on your own, you will have to travel to the top of the volcano.

The traditional way to go up to Fira is the old Greek way - by donkey (mule). Although we mention this tradition in this review, it does not imply that we approve of the use of mules to climb to Fira.

Photo of Cable Car in Santorini.

Cable Car in Santorini

Since 1979, there is a cable car connecting the port of Skala and Fira. The Cable Car offers spectacular views of the island and is thrilling for some.

Less known, divulged, and rarely mentioned onboard most cruise ships, there is also the Editor's Favorite way of exploring Santorini. For around €20.00 per person, you can get from the Port of Skala to the off-track Port of Amoudi - in itself a wonderful attraction - just below the village of Oia, which is one of the Top Highlights of Santorini.

  • Donkeys (mules)
  • Boat transfer to Amoudi

There are three main ways to get around Santorini, explore the top attractions in Santorini (like the charming town of Oia), or spend some time at one of the unique beaches of Santorini:

  • Rental Car or Scooter

Discover and enjoy Santorini on Your Own

Cruise passengers that like to explore ports independently will be happy to know that most highlights of Santorini are easy to explore on your own. You will find almost all you need to discover Santorini on your own as you step out of the tender boat at the pier in the port of Skala.

But you can easily travel to any of the unique beaches of Santorini on your own or spend quality time in Oia.

To get to any of the beaches in Santorini, renting a car or a scooter is our favorite way. Although a taxi may cost less, you will be time constrained.

The fastest way to get to Oia from Fira is by taxi, and the slowest (around 30 minutes) is by public bus.

Our favorite way to travel to Oia is by boat transfer from the port in Skala to Amoudi Bay, a small and charming port just below the village of Oia.

Photo of Transfer to Amoudi Bay in Santorini.

Amoudi Bay Transfer in Skala

From the pier in Amoudi, you can take a regular bus, a donkey, or walk up 214 steps to Oia.

In Amoudi Bay, before going up to Oia, you can choose to walk along the sea (make a left turn at the pier) and go swim on a secluded beach. Next to the pier in Amoudi, there are a few restaurants with marvelous settings and excellent fresh fish.

Photo of Amoudi Bay in Santorini.

Amoudi Bay in Santorini

A couple of tour operators on the port of Skala offer this transfer to Amoudi including the bus transfer from Amoudi to Oia and from Oia to Fira.

Tourist Info

There is a Tourist Information at the pier in the port of Skala, and also up in Fira.

Greek is the official language, but English is widely spoken - Santorini is such a tourist island that English-speaking cruise passengers will easily communicate with locals everywhere.

The legal tender in Greece is the Euro (€) (EUR). US$ dollars or any other currency are NOT accepted in Greece.

Santorini Cruise Port Guide | 6 Best Things To Do In Santorini Port

Santorini port

Welcome to Santorini cruise port! (Post updated: March 2024)

Before we start chanting about the beauty of this unique Greek island, let me remind you something – what you are seeing today are only the remains of a big single island that was destroyed in the volcano eruption that shaped Santorini (Thera) as we know it today and gave us the famous caldera everyone dreams of sailing through!

Nestled in the southern Aegean Sea, this breathtaking island is part of a group of islands known as the Cyclades and is a frequent stop in Mediterranean cruise itineraries. The stunning capital of Santorini island, Fira, overlooks the vast bay where cruise ships anchor and is usually the starting point for everyone visiting the island of Santorini. In this article, I share useful, insider tips and advice on:

  • Santorini cruise port info (Santorini cruise terminal, getting around the port)
  • 6 best things to do in Santorini port (Fira, Oia, Akrotiri, Pyrgos, volcano hiking, sailing)

Santorini Cruise Port

Cruise ships anchor in the bay at the bottom of the volcanic cliffs of Fira and the view of whitewashed buildings perched on the town’s cliffs is a spectacular sight that will leave you speechless! Cruise passengers are transferred ashore by large, comfortable tender boats to the old port of Fira (aka old port of Skala) which is below the town of Fira where the famous cable car is.

The Old Port of Fira consists of a narrow dock with several souvenir stores, a few taverns, cafes, and tour booths. To get to Fira, you need to take a cable car that departs from the Old Port and connects the port to Fira town. Be prepared for queuing as the crowds can be huge. The cable car ride takes only several minutes and offers fabulous views of the town and bay. The cable cars are small, each can take up to 4 people and cost 6€ one way (prices from 2023).

Be mindful of the crowds, especially on the way back to the ship (allow at least 1 hour to embark on the last tender). You can purchase the tickets on-site and both cash and credit cards are accepted. Alternatively, if you’re in good physical shape, you can climb 587 steep stairs to the top.

The guests with prebooked excursions from the cruise line may be tendering to Athinios ferry port , where there isn’t much besides a big parking space for the buses and a few coffee shops. Be sure to read carefully the instructions on your tour tickets.

Getting Around Santorini Greece

  • The currency in Santorini (Greece) is EURO (€). ATMs and currency exchange are available in the town. Local currency and credit cards are widely accepted.
  • The entire island is very uneven and with cobblestone, so comfortable, non-slippery shoes are a must, especially if you decide to walk even if it’s just downstairs to catch the tender back to the ship.
  • The best time to visit Santorini cruise port is April-May-June and September-October. The island is packed with tourists in July and August and you’ll encounter lines even when taking pictures. It’s also quite expensive in the high season.
  • Santorini is a small island and renting a car is a great way to explore it, however, it is extremely challenging to find parking in the high season. In Fira and Oia, you’ll need to leave your car at parking lots a bit outside the historic center and then walk to the old town. Check out Santorini rent-a-car deals
  • Santorini has a reliable public bus network that connects the main towns and villages on the island. The buses are operated by KTEL Santorini Buses and the single ticket prices depends on the final destination. These buses also run between Santorini Airport and Fira. You can check the schedules and pricelist on the official webpage https://www.ktel-santorini.gr/
  • Santorini Airport (JTR) is located on the eastern coast of the island, approximately 5.5 km/3.5 miles (a 10-minute drive) from Fira port.
  • Book a private transfer in Santorini
  • Explore Santorini tours and activities
  • Find accommodation in Fira

If you decide to stay in Fira and take it easy on yourself and your budget, you can spend the day exploring the highlights of Santorini’s picturesque capital. The town is very small and can easily be explored on foot, as the major attractions, historic landmarks, restaurants, cafes, and shops are located within a short walking distance from each other.

Rising 853 ft above sea level, the town of Fira owes its shape to the volcanic eruption that took place in 1650 BC.  The town boasts unique architecture that you can explore while roaming its cobblestone streets, squares, and alleys. If you want to spend a peaceful day just soaking up the local atmosphere, consider grabbing a bite or a coffee at one of the numerous taverns or cafes offering awe-inspiring views of the coast. Keep in mind that cobblestone is everywhere and there are a lot of stairs and inclines.

Fira old town, Santorini

One of the most famous religious sites in Fira and the entire Santorini is the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral , a monumental white Greek Orthodox Church featuring an imposing bell tower, offering majestic views of the coast. The church was built in the middle of the 19th century, however, it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1956 and later restored. It is located in the heart of Fira and boasts a beautiful interior ornated with frescoes painted by a local artist.

Another iconic landmark of Fira is St. John the Baptist Cathedral , the only Catholic cathedral in Santorini, known for its colorful exterior, located a stone’s throw from the cable car upper station.

Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, Santorini

It’s hard to resist the town’s numerous beautiful little stores all around the city. From magnets, hand-made local jewelry, white cotton dresses that match the beautiful views perfectly, olive soaps, leather shoes…You can find whatever your heart desires!

There is no mention of Greece without mentioning the amazing food they offer. There are a lot of restaurants offering options from fast food such as gyros and souvlaki to proper sit-down restaurant meals such as fish, meat, salads, and others. There are a lot of options for vegetarian dishes too, such as fried feta cheese and stuffed peppers… a bit of something for everyone’s taste.

When it comes to drinks and desserts, I would like to suggest the Cappuccino Freddo which they are so proud of – all of you coffee lovers will enjoy it, and for dessert, if you are not interested in sweets such as baklava, an amazing street option would be Greek Yogurt – refreshing and with so many flavor options for you to indulge in!

Santorini restaurant in Fira

Santorini’s capital also boasts several museums where you can learn about the island’s history and origins. One of the most famous ones is the Archaeological Museum of Thera where you can admire exhibits and archeological findings including ancient vases, sculptures, frescoes, and inscriptions. This museum is located near St. John the Baptist Cathedral, in the heart of the town.

Megaron Gyzi Museum located a block away, is a local history museum housed in a 17th-century mansion with a beautiful yard. It contains letters, photos, paintings, and artifacts that reveal the history of this fairytale island.

Last but not least, the Museum of Prehistoric Thira is a small museum located a 5-minute walking distance from the cable car upper station and other historic landmarks. It contains prehistoric artifacts found during the excavations of ancient Thira, including pottery, frescoes, and other valuable pieces.

2. The Village of Oia

If the name doesn’t ring a bell, you probably recognize it by the famous Blue Domed Church featured on countless Santorini postcards. Oia, probably the most famous and most photographed village in Greece, is situated on the northern tip of the island, approximately 10 km (6 mi) away from the capital Fira. The ride takes 15 minutes, however, bear in mind that due to the busy seasons and traffic, it usually ends up being 40 minutes instead.

Oia, Santorini Greece

The village is most famous for the scenic views over the caldera and the magnificent sunset colors contrasting the white-washed houses and famous blue domes. In the village itself, besides the Blue Domed Church, there is a Naval Maritime museum interesting to explore, the Castle of Oia ruins , a picturesque windmill , small art galleries , and numerous restored small churches that you can visit.

The village itself is a true feast for the eyes and the attraction itself, so you can spend your day meandering its narrow cobbled streets, alleys, and staircases, browsing its shops and indulging in Greek traditional dishes. Make sure you bring your best camera , as the beauty of Oia is mind-blowing!

3. Akrotiri

Known as Pompeii of Greece, Akrotiri is an archeological site of an ancient city that was covered in ash at the end of the 1600s BC. It is located in the south of the island, approximately 12 km (7.5 mi) from Fira, and a 10-minute drive from the village of Akrotiri, built on the slopes overlooking the caldera cliffs. Akrotiri excavation site and museum are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and represent one of the most important Minoan Bronze Age archeological sites in the entire Aegean. Here, you will have the opportunity to admire unique frescoes and artifacts from the Minoan Civilization era and discover the everyday life of its settlers.

The driving distance between Fira and Akrotiri is approximately 20 minutes, but due to the traffic and crowds, it can take longer. The site is enclosed and a visit takes anywhere between 4o minutes to 1 hour (or more if you wish). You can book an Akrotiri guided tour or explore on your own. The ticket costs 12€ per person, but some discounts and combo packages are also offered.

Explore the top-rated Akrotiri tours

Within a short drive from the archeological site, you can visit the village of Akrotiri boasting a handful of taverns, shops, and historic landmarks, including the Venetian castle built on top of the village and a lighthouse offering staggering views of the caldera. For beach lovers, Red Beach and Vlychada Beach located nearby are the top picks!

Red Beach, Akrotiri, Santorini

4. Volcano Hiking & Hot Springs Swim

If you are more of an adventure and nature lover, this will be a wonderful experience for you! However, if you book this tour with your cruise line, keep in mind that the sailing boat picks you up straight from the ship and you don’t go to Fira but in the opposite direction.

The hike takes place on Nea Kameni , a tiny uninhabited island of volcanic origin, nestled just off the coast of main Santorini island, across the town of Fira. The day trip starts with a beautiful panoramic sailing of the caldera before you reach the point where you start your volcano hiking.

Nea Kameni Santorini

As mentioned before, the island as we know is what is left after the volcano eruption and here you have an amazing opportunity to hike the Nea Kameni volcano which has eight craters. The last one you will visit is still active and you can easily see the steam coming out.  The hike is not surprisingly all uphill, so please make sure to wear proper shoes and keep hydrated, as you are hiking in warm weather with mostly rocks around you so it can get pretty hot. The hike down usually takes only 15 minutes.

After the hike, tours normally take you to the hot springs for a swim.  You need to swim from the boat to the springs about 40 meters, so if you are not a strong swimmer ask for a vest. The temperature in the springs is warmer, however, the cooler the weather outside the more you will feel the difference so don’t be disappointed if you don’t feel a big difference. The recommendation is to wear dark swimwear as the sulfur can leave traces.

5. Wine Tasting in Pyrgos Village

Surrounded by vineyards producing renowned Assyrtiko white wines, Pyrgos village is an authentic fortress settlement of the Cyclades that sits at the highest point of Santorini island. It was declared a protected settlement in 1995 and is located less than a 10-minute driving distance from Fira.

At the highest point of the village, you will see the ruins of Kasteli Castle and near the entrance, there is a memorial plaque for those who died in World War II. Greek from this village are very proud of their wine and if you are a wine lover you will understand why. I suggest you explore its wonderful architecture, galleries, churches, and winding paths, but above all – delight in the traditional Greek meze and taste the delicious wine in one of the renowned Pyrgos wineries!

The scenic surroundings, sunny and hot weather give it even more of a special flavor and round up the entire experience of this magnificent village.

6. Caldera Catamaran Sail

If you are looking for something to relax and just soak in the sun with breathtaking views, you should book a sailing trip around the island!

No strenuous activities are included, all you need to be able to do is board the sailing boat. It’s a perfect option for those who have already seen Santorini from land and want to change it or any of you who wish to avoid crowds in the city. For those who have family members who cannot cope with the cobblestones and the stairs, sailing is an ideal option and a magnificent experience for the entire family. These trips usually include a full meal and drinks to top off your sightseeing of the spectacular Santorini coast.

Visit Santorini on a Cruise Ship? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Are you planning to visit Santorini on a cruise ship?

It’s going to be fun!

Just make sure you know everything about traveling and getting around on a cruise ship in Santorini for a pleasant experience. Traveling on a huge cruise ship can be great but it also means that you probably have a limited time for exploring the island – and if you don’t have any idea of what to do and what to avoid, you can get confused.

Here’s the ultimate travel guide to make sure your trip to Santorini on a cruise ship is the best and smoothest trip ever!

Important Things to Know

  • Santorini has two ports ; Athinios Port and the Old Port of Fira. Both the ports are too small for the cruise ships to be docked directly. Hence, you’ll have to rely on a ship’s tender to reach the ports.
  • Generally, the cruise ship itineraries in Santorini drop some passengers off at Athinios and the others at the Old Port of Fira. Passengers who arrive at Athinios Port are supposed to book a bus tour via the cruise ship company. These tours are usually packed with many people and hence, we don’t recommend them.
  • If you don’t book a bus tour via the cruise ship company, you’ll be dropped off at the Old Port of Fira.
  • All cruise ships depart from the Old Port. Even the passengers who have booked the bus tour via their cruise ship company have to reach the Old Port to take the ship tender to get on the cruise ship.

How to Get to Fira from Old Port or Vice Versa

The easiest and most common way to reach the Old Port is by a cable car . It takes only three minutes. On the other hand, if you’re feeling adventurous and decide to walk to the port, it’ll be 587 steps. Local donkey ride is another easy way to get there.

Important note: Please note that Gialos, the Old Port is nestled at the foot of a rocky cliff below Fira. If you decide to go by a cable car or on a donkey, you’ll have to pay 6€ per side of the ride.

Where is the Meeting Point if You Book a Private Tour?

For private bus tours, the meeting point is at the top of the cable car. Once you reach the Old Port of Fira, you’ll have to take a cable car to go to the top. Depending on your tour organizer, you may find a guide waiting for you on the top with a sign that has your name or the company name on it.

For private cruise tours, the meeting point could be either at the top of the cable car or Old Port. If it’s the latter, the cruise will start there. Otherwise, you’ll have to meet the tour guide at the top of the cable car who’ll pick you up and drop you at the start port of the private cruise.

Typically, a private cruise in Santorini starts from Ammoudi Port or Vlychada Port while the drop off may be the Old Port of Fira. It’s best to book a cruise and request the organizer to arrange either the meeting point or the drop off location at the Old Port. This will allow you to witness the breathtaking views of Santorini from Caldera while helping you save some precious time by eliminating the need for arranging transportation.

An ideal itinerary is: Old Port > cable car > port of the private cruise by a shuttle > private cruise experience > drop off at Old Port on yacht OR Pickup from Old port on a yacht > private cruise experience > Fira via shuttle service > Old Port via cable car > cruise ship on a ship tender Get in touch with us to find out about the availability of a private cruise that has its meeting point or drop-off at the Old Port.

Will You Have Time to Enjoy a Boat Tour if You Visit Santorini on a Cruise Ship?

A simple answer to this question is that it depends on the time you’re going to spend in Santorini.

If you decide to book a volcano tour that is supposed to depart from the Old Port, the arrival time of your cruise ship must be at least an hour before the departure time of the tour. Moreover, the departure time of the cruise ship must be an hour after the end time of the tour. For example, if the tour starts at 11:00 AM and finishes at 14:00, your cruise ship must arrive at 10:00 AM and depart from Santorini at 15:00.

On the other hand, if you book a catamaran cruise or a private yacht cruise, the departure port will be Ammoudi or Vlychada Port. In this case, your cruise ship must arrive at least a couple of hours before the cruise tour starts because usually, the pickup is on the nearest road just a few meters away from the cable car. You’ll need approximately one hour to reach there and another hour to reach the port through the shuttle service. The time to depart, however, should be 2.5 hours after the tour ends. This is because you’ll need an hour to reach the cable car from the port and chances are that you’ll find a long queue of passengers waiting for the cable car. You might have to wait for half an hour or so before you get a seat. Please note that the last ship’s tender departs an hour before the cruise ship’s departure time.

Recommended : It’s always best to book a private cruise in Santorini for a smooth, hassle-free experience. You can contact us and tell us about your specific requirements. We’ll be more than happy to adjust the start and end time of the private cruise tour and even change the departure port for you! Get in touch with us today to ensure a pleasant private cruise tour in Santorini.

Santorini, Greece – Cruise Port Guide

Planning your cruise to Santorini can seem daunting with the many options and details to consider. Did you know this idyllic Greek island doesn’t have a proper dock for large cruise ships?

Not to worry, as our comprehensive guide simplifies every aspect of your journey – from choosing between Athinios port and Old Port of Fira, accessing local transportation, exploring must-see spots like Oia or Akrotiri site to getting the taste of authentic Greek cuisine.

About the Port

MSC Cruise Ship in bay of Fira in Santorini, Greece

The Santorini Cruise Port is at the base of the Caldera Cliffs in Fira, offering a breathtaking view to all visitors. It is an important docking area for cruise ships, and its location provides easy access to several key points on the island.

Just a short distance lies Athinios Port, which holds the title of Santorini’s main port and is the primary entry point for ferry passengers.

Cruise ship passengers have a unique arrival process; they tender to Skala Port, located just below Fira. This proximity allows you direct entry into Firá town from Skala – a convenient link between sea and land travel that adds charm to your overall journey.

The short ride from the dock to town offers an excellent first impression of what this picturesque island has to offer!

Cruise Terminal Information

Cruise ships docking in Santorini have two ports: Athinios Port and the Old Port of Fira . It’s typical for cruise ship itineraries to drop passengers off at Athinios port.

Large tender boats transfer some cruise passengers ashore, bringing them smoothly from the cruise ship to the ferry port of Athinios.

On the other hand, if your itinerary includes a stop at Skala, situated below Fira – the island’s capital – you’ll be tendered directly there. TUI All-inclusive cruises often dock at this location.

Both ports provide efficient services, ensuring smooth voyages for every traveler.

These locations are packed with amenities and offer delightful views, adding another layer of charm to your Santorini island adventure. The Ports not only function as arrival points but also serve as gateways into the heartland of this picturesque Greek Island.

How to Get Around

Navigating through Santorini from the cruise port offers you a few interesting options. The beautiful village of Thira (Fira) is accessible by a scenic 580-step walk, a donkey ride, or a cable car journey.

Oia, from the Santorini cruise port, is straightforward, too. Either hail a taxi for a speedy trip or catch a local bus service for a real experience.

Both provide convenient transportation and amazing views along the way. Contact a local travel guide if your itinerary seems too much; they can offer valuable insights to make your day trip more enjoyable and efficient.

Use the Santorini cruise port schedule to plan well so that you won’t miss out on anything during your visit to this beautiful island.

Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, santorini greece cruise port guide.

Remember that you are sailing into the huge crater of a still-active volcano. Cruise Passengers are brought to land with tenders (small boats), operated by the Santorini Boatmen Union

Passengers booked on the ship’s shore excursions are tendered at the ferry port of Athinios and take coach tours from there.

The remaining passengers will tender to the port of Skala below Fira, the capital of the island.

From there you can go up to Firá town for a steep and uneven flight of 600 steps on mule-back (7 Euro), or walking up or by cable-car (6 Euro one way), which cliff-top station is further from the center then the top of the stairs. Walking or mule-riding down, back to your ship, can be fun, if you feel up to it. If you do, wear sturdy footwear, it can get very slippery. When more ships are in port, the return cable car trip can be very busy with long queues!

Another fun way is to buy at the tender dock a 20 minute boat transfer to Ammoudi Port in Oia for 30 Euro, which includes a bus trip to Oia town, where you can spend a few hours, than take an half an hour bus trip to Fira.

Apart from a few stalls and lots of mules, there are few facilities until you reach the town on the cliff-top.

Please note: If there are many ships anchored off the coast and you are on one of the latest to arrive, a cruise organized excursion might be your best bet to make it to the top (Fira) of the island.

Sightseeing:

Everyone comes in search of the quintessential Santorini experience: to explore the narrow winding streets and whitewashed houses of the twin cliff-top towns of Thira and Oia, overlooking the deep blue waters of the caldera.

Human presences on the island seem to have existed since the middle of the 3rd millennium B.C. The excavations at Akrotiri have confirmed that human activity on the island continued until the eruption of the volcano around 1500 B.C., which entirely buried the island beneath very thick layers of pozzuolona, At that point, all traces of human activity vanished from the island until the end of the 13th century B.C.

Santorini is one of the most magical islands of Greece. It is a barren, rocky island just opposite a volcano, with black and red beaches and towns situated on high cliffs offering breathtaking views and fantastic sunsets.

Santorini has a dramatic beauty as opposed to lush and green islands. The volcano is still active, and the last eruption was in 1950, causing an earthquake that destroyed many villages on the island.

The island's official name is Thira and its main town, Fira, is also the capital of the Cyclades islands. It is a cosmopolitan island and is therefore quite expensive. The locals live mainly off agriculture and tourism. The islands largest export product is soil; 2.000.000 tons a year are used all over the world, mainly to make concrete. The Suez channel was built with this concrete for example.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Beaches: Santorini main beaches have water sports. In general, Santorini is not the best place for children, since the beaches are stony and quite deep. There are also lots of currents and the waves can get very high. Kamari and Perissa are popular beaches with their beautiful surroundings and black sand. If you seek calmer beaches, it is better to go to Monolithos, Vlichada or Agios Georgios. For snorkeling visit Amoudi.

Santorini is quite a small island, and it is easy to get around. There are local buses to take you to most places, but of course you can also rent a car or a bike. There are also taxis on the island. The harbor where the ferryboats stop is connected to Fira and the rest of the island by a steep serpentine road. Driving up or down this road is quite a terrifying experience for anyone afraid of heights. You can also walk (almost 600steps) or take a somewhat cruel donkey ride all the way. There is also a cable car taking you straight to Fira.

Many operators at the tender port offer (boat)excursions.

Oia (or Ia) Santorini: Oia, pronounced "ee-aa", is the most famous of all villages of Santorini. It is known throughout the world for its quiet life and fantastic sunset, and is certainly the most beautiful and picturesque village of Santorini. The village is also situated on top of an impressive cliff and offers a spectacular view over the volcano of Palia and Nea Kameni and the island of Thirassia. Oia is situated on the north of the island, 11 km away from Fira. Taxis will set you back around 15 euros, buses are another good alternative. The bus station in Fira is near the Cathedral, at the far end of the pedestrian way from the cliff lift.

For approx. € 25 per person you can take a fast boat from Fira to Oia and back. You don't need to go up, but you remain down in the old port. It's well indicated. From there it's 20 minutes to Ammoudi Port in Oia. The bus from the port to the center of Oia is included and you have 1.5 hours to spend before turning back by bus to Fira.

From the bus terminal in Fira you can take a bus to Oia. The journey takes about 30 minutes and costs just € 1.80 per person (one way). You can purchase your ticket on the bus. The final stop in Oia is within walking distance from the center. You park even closer to the city center than the tour buses of the cruise lines.

Akrotiri is an ancient town that was buried when the volcano erupted 3500 years ago. Archeologists are still excavating it, but you can walk around in the little street quarters and see the buildings almost like they were back then. You'll be impressed by the modernity: the houses were two or three stories high, and they even had running water...

Shopping and Food

Santorini's shops - and especially those in Fira - will tempt you for sure. Taking a walk along the narrow cobbled streets of Fira, shop windows will definitely grab your attention. The first to catch your eye are the jewel shops that you will find along Ypapantis street, or "Gold Street" as it has been nicknamed. Not unduly, as this street is considered to be one of the biggest gold markets in Greece. Here you will find the most modern jewels designed by the most famous jewelers from both Greece and abroad.

Traditional dishes such as tomato balls, the Santorini salads, split peas in all their variations, white aubergine, stuffed round courgette's, omelets, cooked capers, fresh cheese, and local specialties including apoxti (a type of cured ham), sausages, wild rabbit with a cheese and egg sauce, brantada, sweet melitinia, and saffron bread rusks, all express the rich and varied cuisine of the island's culture.

A well stocked and very reasonable priced duty free shop is at the tender dock.

Euro US Dollars often accepted, but the exchange rate is often not that great.

Santorini Greece Cruise Port Guide: Practical Tips

Santorini Greece Cruise Port Guide: in this article, you will find all the details regarding arriving in Santorini with a cruiser.

How many ports are there on Santorini? Which one is the cruise port? How to reach visiting points from the port? How much time does it take? All this information is below.

Santorini Island is just a special place. It’s magical, and its views are one and only. I can imagine that you are glad you will stop in Santorini during your cruise trip. Santorini also has some ‘negative’ side; it’s just very touristic and super crowded during the highest season. So it’s important to organise your day well, so that you see as much as possible during the short time and don’t waste your time on lines.

This article will help you organise your Santorini visit well.

Quick links to organise your day on Santorini Island:

I like using GetYourGuide the most.

You can also book tours here .

A few words about Santorini

Santorini is part of the Cyclades. It’s the southernmost Cycladic island. It’s a relatively small island, but one of the most known in Europe, or maybe all over the world.

It’s famous for its views, narrow streets, white houses on the steep cliffs, blue domes, and the view of the caldera. Caldera is a depression formed after a volcano erupts. Santorini is a volcanic island.

Santorini is actually the whole small archipelago; it consists of Thira, the biggest island we usually talk about, and 4 other small islands.

The capital of Santorini is the town of Fira. Close to Fira, there is also an international airport with domestic and international flights. There are many connections especially in the summer season.

Ports on Santorini

There are two main ports on the island of Santorini: the main ferry port, the port of Athinios, and the old port of Fira, Skala. There can be some exceptions, but as a general rule: Athinios port is a ferry port, and Skala port in Fira is a cruise port. Let’s look at both ports in more detail.

Athinios Port

Athinios Port is the newer port, and it’s the main ferry port. So if you are on a private island-hopping trip, or arrive in Santorini from Athens and you use ferries, this is where you will arrive and leave.

The port lies around a 20-minute drive from Fira, the capital of the island.

There are public buses that leave from the bus station in Fira and take you to the port. You can find the schedule at the bus station, as it changes depending on the ferries schedule. You can also take a taxi.

The last part of the drive close to the port is quite spectacular, as you need to go down to the port on a winding and quite busy road.

In the port, you can find a few cafes, taxis, ferry ticket offices, and travel agencies. Generally speaking, it’s a busy, quite chaotic, and tiring place.

Again, it’s used for ferries. It’s too small terminal to accommodate bigger cruisers.

Cruise Port of Santorini

Santorini Greece Cruise Port is called Port of Skala. It’s the old port of Santorini, and it’s in Fira, the island’s capital, so it’s around a 20 minute drive from the ferry Port of Athinios.

It’s not really port in the sense that you disembark the boat directly to the land. Passengers need to be taken to the land by small boats. Also, it’s at the bottom of the Caldera cliffs. Fira town is on the cliff, so you need to go up to be in the town. You can walk up on foot (it’s not a short walk), but there are also other options; we will look at them in the next chapters.

So, as you see, it’s more complicated than just a cruiser’s arrival at the port. Additionally, it gets more problematic if your cruiser arrives in Santorini on the same day as other cruisers, in the summer time, and it gets really crowded – for boats and in the port.

How to check how many cruise ships arrive at the same time?

Actually, you can check how many cruise liners will arrive in Santorini at the same time as yours. Looking briefly now, you can say that in March it’s one per day and not even every day, while in July it could be even 4 per day. They usually have similar arrival and departure times, so you see why it can get crowded with cruise passengers.

You can check it out on this CruiseMapper website . It’s really useful, as, knowing how busy it can be, you can plan in advance what to do after your arrival.

Let’s look at options for what you can do in the port and solutions in detail.

Santorini Greece Cruise Port Guide: Options after Arrival

It’s important to highlight it again; cruise ships do not dock directly in the harbour. That means you need to be taken to the land by the small tender boats. So if there are more cruise ships coming on this day, the waiting time for the tender may be longer.

Ok, now, what are the options after you arrive with the tender boat?

Santorini Greece Cruise Port Guide: Walking up the stairs

Well, it’s possible. Although it’s almost 600 steps, so it’s a long and tiring walk. Especially that it’s probably going to be really hot.

Additionally, there are mules walking on these stairs, so you will have to walk around them (and the stairs will be just dirty after them, so you will need to walk in ‘slalom’).

Generally speaking, it’s not a recommended walk. I think you can do it only if you are super fit.

Santorini Greece Cruise Port Guide: Mule Ride

I need to mention it to cover all the options, but honestly, it’s something you should not really do.

Mule is a ‘combination’ of horse and donkey, so maybe it’s easier for this animal, but generally, many ecological organisations fight against tourists riding donkeys.

And I fully agree, I think we can be tourists and visit beautiful places, yet not have an influence on destroying animals spines.

Santorini Greece Cruise Port Guide: Cable Car

There is another option that is easier, and it’s just a pleasure, as you can see beautiful views on the way. It’s a cable car, which goes up and down. The ride takes around 3 minutes and costs 6 Euro per one way ticket.

Opening time depends on the season; you can check the details on the website (and try to confirm it just before you are planning to use it).

With the cable car, you arrive at the centre of Fira, where you can walk, see great views, and go to restaurants and shops. You can also walk to the bus station from there (it’s not very close, but within walking distance).

This option is great, but it has one downside. Obviously, it has limitations when it comes to the number of people that it can transport. It’s 1000-1200 people (together in both directions), not more. So if it’s a busy day with more cruise ships coming, you can expect to need to wait in a long line.

I think this option is good if you see there are not many ships arriving on the same day. If you see there are more ships arriving at the same hour, you can think about other options.

Santorini Greece Cruise Port Guide: Water Taxi

If you arrive from your cruise ship to the land and notice a huge line for the cable car, you can book in the stands there in the port area another option.

It’s a water taxi.

This is also a very good option, as the views from the sea will be great. In most cases, a water taxi takes you to Oia, another Santorini town.

It’s the most popular town with the most known views. Many pictures of white buildings on cliffs and blue domes come from the beautiful village of Oia. So probably this is the town you would like to visit anyway.

(If you take a cable car and firs visit Fira, and still have enough time to visit Oia, you can go there with a tour, taxi, or just a public bus that leaves from Fira station. Buses on this route go quite regularly, once every half hour or so).

Water Taxi details

Coming back to the water taxi. Check well before buying this option to see what’s included. There are options when you pay around 40 Euro and then have: a water taxi, a bus from the bay to Oia centre, and a private bus from Oia to Fira after you finish visiting Oia.

The bus back to Fira is maybe a little less important, as you have the option to take a public bus (although for sure it’s a more comfortable and less crowded option; expect crowds waiting for buses during the high season), but the included bus or minibus from the bay to the town is very important.

Why? Because with the water taxi, you arrive in Oia, but again, you need to go up. As you arrive at Amoudi Bay.

It’s not as tough as in Fira; with around 280 steps, it can be steep. Well, in the heat, it can be challenging. So the minibus included in the price of the water taxi, may be quite useful.

I think this is a pretty good option, as you don’t wait for cable car to go up, you see Oia, and you are still more independent than taking a tour.

Just remember that with this option, you are coming back to Fira, so you will need to go down to the port and then take boats to the cruise ship, so calculate the time well.

santorini cruise port guide

Santorini Greece Cruise Port Guide: Private Tour

There is one more option, which may give you priority in getting to tender boats from your cruise ship.

You can book a private tour in advance.

Sometimes, boats take tour participants to the other port, Port of Athinios. From there, you are taken by bus or minibus for the trip.

Even if you are not a big fan of such organised tours, it can be a good option to escape crowds and make the most of Santorini in this one day.

You can book the tour via your cruise company. You can also do it on tour websites:

TripAdvisor Half Day Tours.

GetYourGuide .

Here you have to be careful, as part of these trips start already at the top of the cable car, so you will need to wait for the cable car (if busy) anyway.

Still, such a trip is a good idea, as you will not need to worry about logistics and can just visit with comfortable transport and a local guide.

What’s best to see during a day or half-day tour?

It depends on your interest. Most people will go on a generic tour to see Oia, Fira, maybe the beach (for example, Red Beach) and 1-2 more places. There are also options for local wineries and wine tasting tours for wine lovers.

You are not able to see everything in one day, but a good tour will make you see a lot anyway.

Santorini Greece Cruise Port Guide: Summary

These are all the options that you have when arriving in Santorini on a cruise ship.

You should choose what’s best for you based on your interests and needs (if you like visiting more independently or prefer guided tours with a tour guide), but also based on how busy the port is estimated to be.

So that you have great memories from Santorini other than waiting in long lines.

Anyway, you should expect Santorini to be busy, it’s not possible otherwise, especially during the peak season. A few cruise ships arrive in Santorini in the afternoon and leave around 10 or 11 p.m. It’s not a bad option either, as you will be able to see the famous sunset.

Obviously, cruise ship itinerary differs, but I’ve just reviewed a few, and I’m sure you will have a great time and beautiful places to visit on the way, as well as the other Greek islands on the Aegean Sea. Enjoy your cruise and Santorini visit!

Santorini Town Cruise Port Guide (Oia and Fira)

Last Updated on March 4, 2024

Santorini is a great cruise port for day visitors due to its stunning landscapes, picturesque villages like Oia and Fira, historical sites such as Akrotiri, renowned Assyrtiko wine, and the opportunity to witness breathtaking sunsets over the caldera. What’s not to like about Santorini as a cruise visitor? This is a wonderful stopover and here is why below.

Table of Contents

Do I Need to Book a Tour With the Cruise Line for Santorini?

The simple answer is No!

You do not need to book a tour as you can easily get the cable car or walk up the hill to the capital Fira, or catch a bus to Oia.

Fira stands as the capital and largest town of Santorini, a captivating island in the Aegean Sea, Greece, renowned for its captivating views, and whitewashed buildings.

You can then walk around the quaint and beautiful village of Fira and you might find this enough to enjoy Santorini, after enjoying the views and relaxing in the town with a coffee and exploring the shops.

A lot of cruise visitors though often prioritize Oia for its iconic beauty and its sunsets.

Getting from the Cruise Ship to Santorini: Tender Boat

Cruise ships are usually too big to dock in Santorini so the chances are that you will be using a tender.

A tender is a little boat that you get into and then transports you from the cruise ship to the port and in Santorini this is about a 10-minute boat ride and it is usually not charged for.

Upon arrival at the Santorini cruise port, you then have various transportation options to reach the center and explore attractions.

Getting from the Cruise Port to Fira

1. Cable Car (to Visit Fira)

Our favorite way to get from the cruise port to Fira, the island’s capital, is to take the cable car.

It is a wonderful way to appreciate the scenery and, if you have never been in a cable car, then here is your opportunity!

Fira is the capital of Santorini and is a beautiful village with many narrow alleyways and streets with lots of interesting shops.

The views are also lovely in Fira and it is definitely worth seeing and The cable car is still 6 Euros (you can see the latest prices here ).

2. Walking (to Fira)

If weather conditions permit and you enjoy walking, it is a steep uphill stroll from the cruise port to Fira.

We did this once as we love walking and grabbed the chance to get in some much-needed fitness after over-eating on the cruise ship.

If you have dodgy knees, you are better off with the cable car!

3. Taxi or Private Transfer (to Fira)

If you are scared of heights, and do not want to use the cable car, and are not fit enough or willing to walk up the steep hill, then a taxi is a good option.

Taxis are readily available at the port, or you might choose to arrange a private transfer in advance for convenience and comfort, especially if you are a group and/or if you want to see both Fira and Oia.

4. Public Bus

Santorini’s well-established public bus system offers a budget-friendly option for regular routes between the cruise port and various island destinations, though some waiting time may be involved.

What to See and Do in Fira, Santorini

Walking through Fira in Santorini

As a cruise visitor to Fira, Santorini, there are several attractions and activities to choose from during your limited time on the island. Here are some recommendations:

1. Explore the Town of Fira by foot

Wander through the charming streets of Fira, lined with white-washed buildings, boutiques, and cafes.

Make sure to enjoy the architecture and views of the caldera (the caldera refers to a large, water-filled volcanic crater created by the collapse of the island’s central part during a massive volcanic eruption in antiquity).

2. Visit the Archaeological Museum of Thera

Explore the Archaeological Museum of Thera, which houses artifacts from the ancient city of Akrotiri and other archaeological sites on the island.

3. Discover the Museum of Prehistoric Thera

The Museum of Prehistoric Thera showcases exhibits from various periods, including the Minoan civilization.

4. Admire the Three Bells of Fira

Capture picturesque moments at the Three Bells of Fira, a famous blue-domed church with a bell tower. It is a popular spot for photos with the stunning backdrop of the caldera.

5. Visit the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral

The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral is an iconic landmark in Fira. Explore the cathedral and its surroundings.

6. Enjoy Shopping

If you are looking for souvenirs to take back onboard the cruise ship, there are many shops selling handicrafts, handmade jewelry, and a range of local souvenirs.

Getting From the Cruise Port to Oia

You can either go to Oia after visiting Fira or straight from the cruise port.

As mentioned at the start of this post, some people choose to give Fira a miss and head straight for Oia. Others are happy just with Fira. You can do both but just be mindful of the time.

Public buses operate from the cruise port to Oia.

The bus station is usually located within walking distance of the port. The fare is only a couple of Euros and you can usually get a seat (although it can be touch and go during the peak season).

Taxis are often available at the cruise port. While more expensive than buses, taxis will make it far easier to see both Oia and Fira if you want to do both.

*Ensure that the taxi driver uses the meter or agrees on a fare before starting the journey.

What many cruise visitors do is pair up with another couple and go 4 together in a cab straight from the port to Oia.

3. Shuttle Services

Most cruise lines offer a shuttle service from the cruise port to Oia.

4. Walking and Hiking (10 km)

If you are feeling super-adventurous, there is a walking path from Fira (the capital) to Oia known as the “ Fira to Oia Hike .”

This scenic hike offers breathtaking views if you can handle a brisk 10 km walk over the terrain.

The journey from the Santorini cruise port to Oia takes approximately 30 minutes by car or taxi, depending on traffic conditions.

Why Visit Oia?

Oia in Santorini

Oia, situated on the northern edge of Santorini in Greece, is a captivating village that stands out as a must-visit destination for cruise visitors.

1. Spectacular Views

Oia is renowned for its awe-inspiring panoramic vistas of the Aegean Sea and the caldera, particularly during the mesmerizing sunset—a must-see for all visitors.

2. Exploration of Oia Castle (Oia Castle)

Oia Castle , also recognized as the Castle of Agios Nikolaos, offers breathtaking views and is a renowned vantage point for experiencing the mesmerizing sunset.

3. Amoudi Bay Excursion

Below Oia, Amoudi Bay is a delightful fishing village with traditional tavernas and seafood restaurants.

Some visitors opt for a stroll down the steps or a donkey ride to reach this charming spot.

4. Artistic Enclaves and Boutiques

Oia’s narrow lanes are adorned with art galleries, boutiques, and souvenir shops, offering unique handmade crafts, jewelry, and local artworks.

5. Visit to the Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum of Oia provides a glimpse into the island’s maritime heritage, showcasing ship models, historical maritime equipment, and captivating photographs.

6. Photography Paradise

You have probably seen dozens of photos of Oia without even realizing it, as photos of this town adjourn so many travel guides and newspaper travel articles.

Oia’s unique architecture, vibrant colors, and stunning landscapes make it a haven for photographers, offering limitless opportunities to capture unforgettable moments.

Is 1 Day In Santorini Enough

8 Best Greek Islands For Older Couples

Like every place on earth, Santorini has its own unique culture, profound history, and rich cuisine. That’s why it’s impossible to discover the entirety of the island in a single day. Nevertheless, you can explore the major highlights of Santorini and experiment with local dishes during a one-day trip. Who knows, this short trip might give you a reason to come back to the island in the future.

Also, it’s worth noting that Santorini is a small island with relatively few things to do; that’s why you’ll be able to see the major tourist attractions on the island during a one-day trip. Santorini promises you an unforgettable adventure as long as you know where to look. From the fascinating town of Oia to the stunning Red Beach, each corner of this cute little island has much to offer.

Santorini Cruise Port is a popular cruise destination in the Aegean Sea, in the Cyclades island group of Greece. When cruise ships arrive at Santorini, they anchor in the deep Caldera Bay, and passengers are tendered to The Old Port of Santorini, which takes around 10 minutes.

Don’t get confused between The Old Port and Athinios Port in Santorini.

Athinios Port is the main port of Santorini and serves as the primary entry point for visitors arriving by ferry, not cruise ships.

The Old Port is located in the town of Fira, which is the capital of Santorini. As you approach the island, the views from the tender boats are genuinely awe-inspiring, with the iconic whitewashed buildings perched on the cliffs against the backdrop of the deep blue sea.

Once you are on land after your tender ride – how should you spend the day in Santorini? First, how do you get to the top where all the attractions are?

When Is The Best Time To Go To Santorini

The best time to visit Santorini depends on your preferences and priorities. Santorini enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters.

  • Summer (June to August): this is the peak tourist season in Santorini when the temperatures range from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F). The island gets crowded during this period, and prices for accommodation and flights tend to be higher
  • Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September to October): these shoulder seasons offer pleasant weather with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). The crowds are smaller in Santorini in September compared to summer, the prices are relatively lower, and you still have many sunny, swim-worthy days
  • Winter (November to March): Santorini experiences mild winters, with temperatures averaging around 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F). While it’s the off-peak season, some hotels, restaurants, and tourist facilities will be closed

Getting From The Port To Fira (Thira)

Ports in Greece - Amazing evening view of Fira, caldera, volcano of Santorini

To travel from the Old Port to Fira (also known as Thira) in Santorini, you have a few options:

If you’re up for some exercise, you can walk from the Old Port to Fira. The route involves climbing a series of stairs carved into the cliffs. It can be a steep and challenging ascent, but it offers a chance to experience the island’s scenic views and charming architecture. Remember that it may take around 30-45 minutes to reach Fira on foot, depending on your pace. And once you start, there is no changing your mind!

Santorini Island Cable Car

Donkey Ride

We do not condone these. Although a traditional and unique way to ascend from the Old Port to Fira, riding a donkey is just plain cruel.

Donkeys have been used as a means of transportation on Santorini for many years, but the use of donkeys has been a subject of debate due to animal welfare concerns.

Now that is all out of the way, let us show you ways to spend a day in Santorini.

Brands We Use And Trust

Morning itinerary ideas in santorini.

In the morning, try to hit the cultural and historical sites. From taking in local life to digging into past civilizations, there’s something for everyone to explore Santorini’s unique culture. Depending on how long you want to linger, you will probably only choose one of these options.

The Town Of Oia

Winter in Greece - Small town Oia on Santorini

Greek towns are famous for their rich cuisines, warm cultures, and picturesque scenery. And one of Greece’s most scenic and fascinating towns, Oia, is located on the tiny island of Santorini. If you happen to visit Santorini and have only one day to discover the island, Oia must be on your itinerary .

Lying on the northwestern tip of Santorini, Oia is famous for its stunning sunset views and whitewashed Greek houses with blue details. The vine-adorned narrow streets of Oia are full of colorful flowers and Mediterranean plants, creating a romantic atmosphere with a touch of exoticism.

Most buildings on Oia have blue details, like domes and window frames. Although this is a common feature of Greek townhouses, Oia’s je ne sais quoi turns it into something unique.

Besides these, Oia also boasts many restaurants and cafés, where visitors can enjoy local dishes on terraces and balconies facing the Aegean.

The Akrotiri Archaeological Site

Recovered ancient buildings in prehistoric town of Akrotiri, one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. An archaeological site of Akrotiri in Santorini, Greece

Most Greek islands in the Cyclades feature archaeological sites from ancient civilizations . Most of these sites were founded by the once-thriving Minoan civilization, which ruled over the Aegean islands – most significantly, over Crete . Today, the ruins of these settlements of yore offer visitors a glimpse of the ancient past. And for history enthusiasts, Santorini’s Akrotiri is a must-see gem.

The Akrotiri Archaeological Site is an ancient Minoan city in the southern part of Santorini. The settlement, discovered in the late 1960s, is considered one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites .

Akrotiri was once an advanced Mediterranean settlement; many pieces of pottery and golden figurines were discovered in the city, pointing to an artisan society. One of the city’s most impressive features was its extensive drainage system, which was made up of stone channels and terracotta pipes that carried water and waste away from the city. Unfortunately, this thriving society was shaken and buried by the Theran eruption in the 16th century BC.

Today, visitors can see Minoan-era houses, everyday tools, and ancient pottery at the excavation site. For history fans, a trip to Akrotiri might be an awe-inspiring and exciting experience.

Fira Museums

Easter In Greece - Santorini Church

Visitors interested in the island’s culture and history may prefer to visit some of the museums in Fira. They are great to visit after seeing the Archaeological Site of Akrotiri, but if you only have time to tour the museums, they are interesting to visit on their own.

  • Archaeological Museum of Fira : This museum is home to artifacts from the island dating back to the 3rd millennium BC from the island’s former Minoan civilization
  • Museum of Prehistoric Thira : This museum has objects actually found at the Archaeological Site of Akrotiri, along with information on island geology.

Afternoon Itinerary Ideas In Santorini

Santorini is known for incredible beaches and natural beauty, so putting a beach or hike on your to-do list in the afternoon is the perfect way to experience the outdoors.

Perissa Beach

Greece With KIds - What to do in Greece with kids - Perissa beach in Santorini

Once you’ve spent the morning visiting cultural and historical attractions, pay a visit to the famous Perissa Beach and embrace the endlessness of the Aegean.

Perissa Beach is famous for its crystal-clear water and unique black sand. The reason behind this unusual color is the very volcanic activity that created the island itself. It’s important to note that the color causes the sand to absorb heat, so make sure you have a towel to rest on and shoes to wear.

Since Perissa Beach is several kilometers long, visitors can take a stroll along the beach and discover various restaurants and beach clubs . Visitors can have a meal or a few drinks , gazing at the magnificent horizon and the Aegean.

Since the island has a small population, the beach is almost never overcrowded, meaning visitors can sunbathe, swim, and unwind in tranquillity. The beach is also a favorite destination for families due to its calm and shallow water.

Perissa Beach is also a famous spot for water sports, with several facilities where visitors can rent equipment for snorkeling, windsurfing, and jet skiing.

Depending on how long you linger, you may only have time for one beach. If Perissa doesn’t strike your fancy, Red Beach is another unique beach to visit. A volcanic sand beach on the southern coast of Santorini, the beach is a unique and stunning destination known for its dramatic red cliffs and red sand.

The surrounding red cliffs provide a dramatic and breathtaking setting for sunbathing, swimming, and taking pictures. The red color of the beach’s pebbles charmingly contrasts the turquoise waters of the Aegean.

Since the beach is only accessible via a narrow path along the edge of the cliffs, it might be challenging for people not used to hiking. Fortunately, the serenity and gorgeous scenery of the beach are really worth the hassle.

Understanding Santorini Cruise Port

Santorini is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The cruise port of Santorini is located in the town of Fira, which is the island’s capital and main hub. The port is situated at the edge of the caldera, providing visitors with stunning views as soon as they arrive.

When your cruise ship docks at the port, you will typically be greeted by a picturesque scene of white-washed buildings and blue-domed churches nestled on the cliffs. From here, you have several options to explore the island. The most common way to get to Fira is by cable car or donkey ride up the steep cliffside. Alternatively, you can choose to hike the 588 steps if you’re feeling adventurous.

Once you reach Fira, you’ll find a bustling town filled with shops, restaurants, and cafes. This is a great place to wander around and soak up the local atmosphere. From Fira, you can also easily access other parts of the island, such as the charming village of Oia or the ancient ruins of Akrotiri.

It’s important to note that Santorini can get very crowded during the peak tourist season, especially when cruise ships are in port. Therefore, it’s a good idea to plan your visit accordingly to avoid the crowds. If possible, try to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to enjoy the beauty of the island without the masses.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the port area itself is not very large and can become congested when multiple cruise ships are in port. It’s recommended to allow some extra time when returning to your ship to account for possible delays or long queues for the cable car or donkey ride.

Overall, the Santorini cruise port offers a convenient and stunning gateway to the island. With its breathtaking scenery, charming towns, and rich history, Santorini is a destination that will leave a lasting impression on any traveler. So make sure to take advantage of your time in port and explore all that this captivating island has to offer.

Already a member, one day in santorini by cruise ship the ultimate guide, especially for cruise travellers, useful information and tips for santorini cruise visitors.

The cruise port of Santorini was originally named Skala. But most of the people on the island know it as the old port of  Thera. Before the construction of Athinios Port, the port of Skala used to serve every boat or ship that was coming to Santorini. After the establishment of the “new” port of Athinios, the old port is mainly serving cruise ships.

The cruise port is located at the bottom of Fira which is the capital of the island. It is about 250 meters (820 ft) lower than the main city. If you want to reach the top there are 2 choices.

The first one is the cable-car (teleferik) and its entrance is located at the north end of the cruise port. The second choice is the walking path which is comprised of 587 steps.

Cable car Santorini information and prices

The cable-car of Santorini old port runs every day from 06:00 in the morning till 10:00 at night and it comes every 20 minutes.

The prices for the tickets are: 6€ for an adult ticket per trip, 3€ for a child 5-10 years old per trip and kids under 5 years old can go for free.

There is also an extra fee for the luggage which is estimated to 3€ per passenger.

Unfortunately, there is no website to buy the cable-car tickets online. The tourists can only buy them at the terminals at the cruise port of Santorini. Payments are acceptable either in cash or by credit card.

The ride from the old port to the main city of Fira takes about 4-7 minutes.

Also, keep in mind that during the peak season there is a long queue of people waiting at the top of the cable car station for their return back to the cruise ship. Thus, it would be wise to get there about 2 hours earlier of the last scheduled boarding time.

Santorini cruise port taxis

As the island of Santorini is very busy and there are only 39 taxis all over Santorini to serve millions of tourists, it is highly recommended for cruise visitors to pre-book one online before their cruise ship docks on the island of Thera.

By booking a taxi online, you won’t spend your time waiting and searching for an available car to take you to your desired destination.

Moreover, when you   order a taxi online ,   you have the possibility to make a roundtrip reservation. In this way, your visit to Santorini will be stress-free as you won’t be stuck in a place far from the cruise port trying to find the next available taxi to be back on the cruise ship on time.

Santorini cruise port Tours & Sightseeing rides

Many companies on the island organize one-day or half-day Santorini tours, especially for visitors who are coming to Santorini by cruise only for a few hours. It is suggested to  book a private experience ,   as you will be able to customize the itinerary and take it closer to your interests without waiting for big groups of people and wasting your time.

One of the most reliable and highly-ranked companies on the island is  Cozy Sightseeing Tours .   By choosing Cozy Sightseeing Rides, you will have a well-trained, friendly, and English-speaking driver or assistant to show you the island of Santorini and its hidden gems of it.

Moreover, in conjunction with the brand-new and air-conditioned vehicles, your experience in Santorini will be an amazing and unforgettable memory for a lifetime.

Santorini cruise port – Meeting points for tours & taxis

Most of the companies meet with the travelers on the Main Street of Fira, which is a few meters away from the cable car station, as the cable car station is not accessible by car. The walk is very easy and lasts about 7 minutes.

Also, some others waiting to meet with their customers at the top, near the exit of the cable-car, by holding a sign with their name.

But keep in mind that this depends on how every company works. Thus, it would be better for you to contact them and confirm your meeting point.

Santorini Greece Port Guide

Cruises to Santorini, Greece help share the effortless beauty and history of the island with the world. Though it’s no longer a well-kept secret, Santorini’s charm cannot be diminished. The island’s multicolored structures pop against the blue-and-white buildings and the turquoise Aegean sea below. Less academic than Athens, quieter than summer party town Mykonos, Santorini is one of the most-visited destinations on any number of Mediterranean cruises , and for good reason.

Santorini’s cruise port was created when the island’s volcano erupted in 1650 BC. The port is located at the base of Fira, the capital city. When your Santorini cruise docks in Fira, you’ll take a small boat to the shoreline and then, in picturesque Greek fashion, make your way to the top of the island by either cable car, donkey, or on foot.

While you’re on a Santorini cruise, the island will show you its romantic, relaxed spirit. Explore the village of Oia, see the sunset from Amoudi Bay, or take a half-day excursion to Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni—two islands formed by volcanic eruptions—for a dip in their ancient, therapeutic hot springs.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to santorini.

Amoudi Bay is one of Santorini’s hidden gems, a tiny port on the northwest side of the island where tourists and locals intermingle for romantic evening walks along the bay’s rocky shores, or enjoy a drink and fresh seafood — like grilled octopus or a fried cheese dish called saganaki — at a variety of waterfront restaurants.

Oia Village

The village of Oia (pronounced Ia) is north of Fira, situated atop a sizable cliff. Oia offers a spectacular view of the island of Thirassia in the distance. While in Oia, you’ll find shops, taverns, restaurants, and attractions aplenty, from art galleries to the Maritime Museum, which memorializes the naval history of the area. Oia provides a glimpse into a bustling, traditional Greek village culture. Enjoy fresh fish and yet another unbeatable island view.

Kamari Beach

Kamari Beach is unique for its black sand and home to a famous beach resort. During the summer season, Kamari Beach is an incredibly popular destination for tourists because of its water sports, vibrant resort nightlife, and the ease of being right at the waterfront while surrounded conveniently by bars, nightclubs, and cafes.

Venetsanos Winery

One of the most unique wineries you’ll ever visit, Venetsanos Winery was literally carved into the cliffs just above the port of Athinios. The winery was designed and built in 1947 and active until 1967. After a 47-year hiatus, the winery became operational again in 2014. Because of the steep cliffside, the winery was built to accommodate Santorini’s one-of-a-kind environment. Note there are four different levels for each stage of the wine-making process. The incline of the soil created a natural flow of wine from one level to the next.

Learn More About Santorini Shore Excursions

Top things to do in santorini, see the akrotiri ruins in oia village.

You’ll not only see the the ancient Minoan site of Akrotiri from Oia’s hilltop, but it’s also a fantastic vantage point from to witness a Santorini sunset. While visiting these ancient ruins, you’ll discover a rich history about the Akrotiri settlement, which was destroyed during the 16th century BC and buried in volcanic ash—similar to how the site of Pompeii in Italy was preserved. As a result, many objects and frescoes were well-preserved by the burial and excavated in 1967.

Hike to Skaros Rock

It wouldn’t be Greece without another impressive formation of ancient ruins, and that’s what you’ll find at Skaros Rock north of Fira. Skaros used to be the capital of Santorini until the 18th century, when Fira claimed capital status due to its close proximity and accessibility to the sea. Today Skaros is a popular site for hiking and photography. Don’t forget to bring your hiking shoes to reach the formation of Skaros summit with ease.

Sail Over to Nea Kameni

Take a short trip—about 30 minutes from the port of Athinios—to the island of Nea Kameni (which translates to “new burnt island’ in Greek) for a dip in its famous hot springs. The island is uninhabited and a protected scientific site. The last eruption on Nea Kameni happened in 1950. Don’t miss your chance to climb a gravel path to reach the top of the crater.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Santorini Cruise Port

Santorini offers not only plentiful restaurants and taverns tucked away in every corner and alleyway, but also specific regional dishes made in homes and restaurants across the island. Try a few Santorini delicacies while you’re on the island like fava or melitinia. Fava is a creamy, split pea purée, served warm with lemon and olive oil. Fava is an ultimate comfort food and a timeless classic on the island. Or try melitinia, a traditional dessert in the form of a sweet cheese pie. It’s typically served at Easter but also can be found at various bakeries on Santorini. Many dishes at restaurants may incorporate a special variety of eggplant called white eggplant, which thrives in the volcanic soil on the island. White eggplant is sweeter to the taste than its purple counterpart.

Culture & History of the Santorini Cruise Port

The culture of Greece has evolved over thousands of years. In fact, the first settlement in Ancient Greece dates back to the Paleolithic era (11,000-3,000 BCE). The foundations of western civilization saw their start in the Classical Period (6th - 4th century BCE), where democracy and the city-state (polis) would have an indelible impact on the history of the world.

Santorini is just one island in a complex of Greek islands called the Cyclades, located in the Aegean Sea and south of the mainland of Greece. Today, Santorini is considered a caldera, or a large crater formed as a result of a substantial volcanic eruption. The oldest signs of settlement in Santorini date back to the Neolithic period, and its settlement impacted the whole of Greece, even influencing major migrations. During the Hellenistic period, the area became an important port city and naval base, a center for both trade and military operations of the day.

Food in Santorini reflects the Mediterranean environment, but the area’s volcanic soil and sparse rainfall makes for unique crops. Whether through its fair climate and Mediterranean weather, depictions of the island in film and photography, or its signature painted houses at the top of the caldera, Santorini has captured our culture fascination as a destination where one can be fully immersed in Greek culture both ancient and modern.

Santorini Port Facilities & Location

Santorini’s cruise port—called the port of Skala, or the old port —is located at the base of the Caldera Cliffs in Fira, the capital of Santorini. Because the island doesn’t have a large cruise terminal, passengers are brought ashore via small boats. It’s a truly unique experience for visitors in one of the most serviced ports in the world. From the Skala pier, you’ll find a few duty-free shops and restaurants. During the summer season, tours are offered to the volcano and hot springs from Skala.

Then, you have three options for reaching the top of the island: take the cable car available from the pier, take a mule ride for about €8, or, for a little exercise, hike up around 600 steps to the top.

Transportation in Santorini

While on cruises to Santorini, Greece, use one of these available transportation methods:

Locals have used donkeys as a mode of transportation since ancient times. Due to the uneven landscape of the island, donkeys are highly used in the routes from the old port of Fira up to the town, and from the port of Ammoudi to Oia.

The central bus station is in Fira, the island’s capital, and is the cheapest way to get around in Santorini. The buses cover routes around the island and to most tourist destinations.

Find taxis available outside the port and in the central squares of Fira and Oia. Though taxis are a quicker option, they tend to be more expensive than public transport.

Car or bike rental

Renting a car or motorbike is an exciting way to explore the island on your own. There are many car rentals agencies all around Santorini; however, booking in advance is recommended, as demand is very high during peak season in Santorini.

Boat or ferry

Excursion boats take passengers from the old port of Fira to the island’s volcano (called Palea Kameni), the hot springs, and the small island of Thirassia. Cruise and excursion boats depart from the old port of Fira, while ferries depart from the port of Athinios, about five miles south of Fira.

Tipping taxi drivers isn’t common, but it’s polite to do so when given great customer service, and a typical percentage would be 10% of your fare. It’s also customary to leave some Euros behind at a restaurant if the service or meal was very satisfactory. If there is no service charge included in your bill, a 10% tip is customary. Finally, if you’re taking a tour in Greece, leave an additional tip of €5-€10 for your tour guide.

Santorini Island (Greece) is among the most popular ports of call on Eastern Mediterranean/Aegean cruises. The island is in the Aegan Sea and is the southernmost of the Greek Cycladic Islands.

Santorini (aka Thera/Thira) covers a total area of approx 91 km2 (35 mi2) and has population around 15,000.

The island's largest town and principal port is Fira/Thira (locode GRJTR).

Santorini Island is essentially what remained after an enormous volcanic eruption which destroyed the earliest settlements on a formerly single isle, and created the geological caldera. A large central, rectangular lagoon, measuring about 12x7 km (7,5x4,3 mi), is surrounded via 300 m (980 ft) high, steep cliffs on 3 sides. The depth of the caldera is 400 m (1312 ft), which makes it impossible for any but the biggest ships to anchor anywhere in the bay. A fisherman's harbour is located at Vlychada, on the southwestern coast. The principal port on the island is Athinios. Fira is the capital, clinging to the top of the cliff that is looking down on the lagoon.

Santorini is the most active volcanic centre in South Aegean Volcanic Arc, but what remains today is mainly a water-filled caldera. The island's volcanic arc is approx 500 km (310 mi) long and 20-40 km (12-25 mi) wide. The region became volcanically active about 3–4 million years ago, but volcanism on Thera started about 2 million years ago via the extrusion of dacitic lavas from vents around Akrotiri.

The island is the site of one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: Minoan eruption (sometimes called Thera eruption), which occurred around 3,600 years ago at the height of Minoan civilization. The eruption left a huge caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits and may have led to the collapse of Minoan civilization on Crete, 110 km (70 mi) to the south, via a gigantic tsunami. Another theory holds that Thera eruption is the source of Atlantis' legend.

Island's primary industry is tourism. The other main source of wealth includes agriculture. In recent years, the island has been voted one of the most beautiful in the world. Santorini remains the home of a flourishing wine industry, which is based on the Assyrtiko grape variety. White varieties include Aidani and Athiri, whereas red ones include mandilaria and mavrotragano.

In October 2017, the Greek Government ordered the raising of the sunken cruise ship Sea Diamond. The vessel foundered (took on water and sank) in 2007, leaving 2 passengers missing and 1 presumed dead. The decision was made as the wreck posed a potential environmental risk and was deemed a hazard to shipping near the island. On April 5, 2007, the 143-m ship struck a volcanic reef. All of its 1600 passengers and crew were evacuated, except a 45-year-old male passenger (of French origin) and his teenage daughter, who probably drowned. The bodies were never found. For cruise ship accidents you can visit our CruiseMinus section.

Santorini is the most popular cruising destination of all Greek Isles. The busy season for the island is from July through August. Santorini is often described as paradise and is among the world’s most breathtaking places. The towns on the island are situated atop of high cliffs and are looking over the caldera of an ancient volcano.

The closest to the cruise port Thira/Fira international airport is approx 6 km from downtown.

Santorini is often included in Eastern Med itineraries operated by major cruise line brands like Costa , MSC , RCI-Royal Caribbean , NCL-Norwegian , HAL-Holland America , Celebrity , Princess , as well as the luxury travel brands Azamara , RSSC-Regent , Oceania , Seabourn , Windstar , SeaDream .

In 2017, Santorini self-imposed a daily cruise passenger limit of 12000. In 2018, this limit was further pushed down to 8000 per day.

The island's cruise port schedule for 2018 had a total of 439 ship calls (409 in 2017). For season 2019 were handled 592 ship calls with ~870,000 passengers.

Following the COVID crisis, in 2022 Santorini handled a total of 686 cruise ship calls, which number in 2023 increased to 753 (112 in June alone).

Cruise ships to Santorini Island dock (anchor) at Thira - port town on the western coast. The cruise port is a tender port (doesn’t have passenger terminal). Cruise vessels anchor in the caldera and their passengers are tendered ashore to the Old Port in Fira (Skala) via local tender boats (called skunas). Cruise liners usually call on Santorini Island at 8 am and leave at 6 pm.

Cruise ship tourists can reach town Fira by walking, by donkey or by cable car. Cable car and donkey rides are affordably priced. A cable car is available every 20 min. Donkey rides from the cruise tender dock take up to 30 min, almost the same as walking.

  • Fira (Thira): the capital of the island is amazing place. The houses, the flowers, the sunsets – even they are impressive enough. All buildings are white with blue cupolas. The streets are narrow, the hotels are small, the cuisine in the restaurants is so tasty. The city is easily reached from Santorini cruise port tender dock – you need to climb 580 zig zag steps.
  • Museum of Prehistoric Fira: located near the bus station.
  • Folklore Museum: the museum is located on Kontochori. The building is a cave dwelling from the 19th century. Discover the typical household on the island. You can also find many local tools for wine-making or barrel-making. The Folklore Museum works from May to October. The admission is three euros.
  • Oia: eight miles from Santorini cruise port tender dock (direction north) is the most photographed village of the island. Everything here is breathtaking, especially dinner at sunset.
  • Naval Museum: the museum is located in Oia. It is open from April to November. The admission is three euros. The museum houses local ships models, equipment for navigation and more.

A Santorini's Port Survival Guide

santorini cruise port guide

Key Takeaways

  • The port of Athinios is the main port of Santorini, where most ferry and cruise ship arrivals and departures take place.
  • It can get crowded and chaotic , so it's essential to arrive early if you have a scheduled departure .
  • The port of Athinios is relatively basic, with limited facilities. There are restrooms and a small convenience store, but amenities are minimal .
  • To reach your accommodation or explore the island from the port, you take a taxi, a public bus, or book transportation services , which is recommended.

santorini cruise port guide

With Santorini being one of the most visited summer destinations in Greece and around the world, it’s only fair we dedicate a whole post to this tourist hub to allow you to gain all vital information in one single reading.

The Cycladic Islands are always popular with travelers around the world. However, Santorini has something special. Maybe it is the nearby volcano, the Caldera cliffs, the picturesque Santorini town, or the convenient Santorini airport that boasts direct flights from some European capitals, or maybe it's all the above.

One thing is for sure: the island hosts its visitors every year with care and consideration.

Read below our Santorini port survival guide and learn all you need to know about one of the most beautiful ports in Greece, Athinios port for your next visit on one of our Greece vacation packages !

Where is the Santorini Port?

santorini cruise port guide

Santorini , officially called Thira, is the southernmost Greek island located in the Cyclades complex, in southern Aegean. Known around the world for its unique beauty and luxurious lifestyle, it attracts thousands of tourists every year. Such a popular and wonderful island, however, couldn’t lack an equally wonderful port! In fact, recently, Athinios port in Santorini was voted as one of the most beautiful ports in the world.

Athinios port in Santorini is considered the gateway to the Cyclades, and while visiting it is not considered one of the must things to do in Santorini , it is worth your time as its boasts the most amazing sunshine you will ever see, and you will remember forever. Anyone who visits the ports of Santorini can not forget the eerie feeling and the amazing view.

Athinios port, as the main port of Santorini, is called, is located 10 km south of Fira. It is located at the foot of the caldera and is 8 km from Fira, the island's capital, and 7 km from Santorini International Airport.

It is the main pillar for visitors to the island coming from the sea. It is connected to the port of Piraeus daily and throughout the year, as well as to the surrounding islands with numerous passenger ferries. No ferry company that serves Santorini doesn't get tendered ashore at the port of Santorini. Itineraries and responses multiply during the summer.

There are various restaurants, cafes, and mini markets in the Athinios port in Santorini, while in the air-conditioned passenger lounge you have the possibility of free wireless internet connection. Finally, in the Santorini port, you will find a taxi rank and the starting bus station for your transfer to all areas of the island.

Arriving by passenger ferries or cruise ships

santorini cruise port guide

The main Santorini ferry port (Athinios port) is located in the western part of the island, in the same village of Athinios. This is the ferry port of Santorini where the vast majority of conventional ferries and cruise ships stop when approaching the island.

Regular ferry services from the port of Piraeus to Athens through the Greek companies Blue Star and Hellenic Seaways. It is very important to keep in mind that there are two types of ferries, regular and fast, the difference between them is that the journey between Piraeus and Santorini ferry port with the regular is 8.5 hours and with the fast 5.30. Of course, the fast is more expensive, but the time transport is significantly reduced.

oia santorini Contributor shutterstock

Of course, there are boat connections between Santorini port and the other circular islands; you just have to look for them on the websites of the respective ferry companies or platforms such as Ferryhopper. Of course, during the summer, there are many more connections than in the spring or fall.

Please note that many of the Santorini beach hotels , and not only, offer free transfers from the ferry port if you have previously agreed with them.

Santorini Ferry Port Transportation

santorini cruise port guide

You can reach the ferry port of Santorini from most areas of the island, and definitely the most central ones. A KTEL bus service is great for getting around Santorini as it takes both visitors and locals all around the stunning island, including the Santorini port.

You can reach the Santorini port from Fira in 14.3 km. The ferry tickets come up to 2 euros during the day and 2.30 euros if you choose to take the night bus. The route from Santorini port to Pyrgos and Vothonas will set you back 1.80 euros during the day and 2.30 during the night.

santorini Andrew Mayovskyy shutterstock

From Karterados, Athinios ferry port of Santorini is at a distance of 12.4 km, with the ticket costing 1.60 euros for the day bus and 2 euros for the night bus.

The distance between Athinios port and Mesaria and between the port facilities and Perissa is 10.3 km and 11.2 km respectively, while they both cost 1.60 euros during the day and 2 euros during the night. Last but not least, you can reach the port from Kamai in 19.9 km, which will cost you 2.20 for the day bus and 2.80 euros for the night bus you can take from the bus station you'll be guided to if you ask around.

Buses at the Santorini Ferry Port

santorini cruise port guide

Outside the port of Santorini, the local company KTEL buses take you to most of the surrounding cities, as we have already mentioned before. Buses run every 30 minutes in summer and every hour in winter. You have to keep in mind that public buses are green and that the other colors are tour buses.

The buses are coordinated with the ferries so that every time a ferry reaches the port of Santorini, there is a bus that is waiting to service the passengers. As for the bus itineraries, you can confirm them on the island or on the KTEL website here .

Taxis at Santorini Ferry Port

santorini cruise port guide

In addition to buses, there are taxis available outside Athinios port in Santorini. However, during the summer months, it can be quite difficult to find a free taxi.

We highly suggest you first agree with the taxi driver about the price of the trip before kicking off your ride because unfortunately, there are many taxi drivers that will attempt to charge you even double the price if you don’t.

As in most ports in the world, there are car rentals available in Athinios port in Santorini island, where you can rent any pretty much vehicle of your choice -provided you have a driver’s license.

Tickets for Santorini Ferries

Should i buy my ferry tickets in advance or at athinios port in santorini.

santorini cruise port guide

Booking your ferry tickets for your vacation in Santorini in advance, and in fact, as soon as possible from the moment you decide you want to visit this magical Greek island will be the best move.

Especially if you plan on visiting Santorini during the high-season summer months, when the island is extremely popular with travelers from all over the world, booking your tickets in advance is essential.

Santorini caldera JIERE shutterstock

In case you’re extremely lucky and want to travel to the small island of Santorini without a vehicle, you might also be able to find a ticket at Athinios port, however, if we were in your shoes we wouldn’t try it.

It would be such a pity for you to come all the way to Greece with a dream to catch the sunset from the famous Santorinian caldera, a remnant of the volcanic eruption, and instead, be left in the port of Piraeus bare-handed.

How Early to Arrive for Santorini Ferry Departures in Athinios port?

santorini cruise port guide

Depending on when you’re going to Santorini, the time you need to arrive at Athinios port in order to have a smooth departure varies.

During the high-season summer months and now with the Covid checks that need to be done, it is advised to reach the port approximately 1,5 hours before the time of departure, so you can be there as soon as the ferries arrive.

It is likely you’ll receive either a text message or an email from the shipping company you’ve booked your tickets with to inform you about the preferred time of arrival a couple of days before your departure.

The old port

santorini cruise port guide

The small port of Fira, also known as the old port of Santorini, lies about 900 feet below the town of Fira and just below the caldera. This leads to 587 cobbled stairs of helical formation, something that might make your visit to it a bit challenging, especially if you're traveling to Santorini with kids .

The port is a destination for large cruise ships that leave a large number of tourists every day, who go up to Fira either by traditional donkeys or by cable car.

For that reason, it is often referred to as the Santorini cruise port, while you can come upon several boat rental agencies around the area. Excursion boats also start from the port to the islands of Nea and Palia Kameni, Thirasia, and Oia. Around the pier, there are cafes, souvenir shops, and taverns.

Final Thoughts

There is nothing that should come between you and the extraordinary island of Santorini. If you’re having second thoughts, don’t. Taking a trip to Santorini in the summer will be one of the best decisions you will ever make.

Let your eyes feast upon the spectacle of Athinios port in Santorini, and begin your adventures with a magical view of the volcanic land. We’re jealous!
