ABOUT FEIST

Throughout her new Grammy-nominated album Multitudes, 11-time Juno Award-winning artist Feist sets her observation on the countless ways we seek out or deliberately hide from the truth: searching the natural world for portents and good omens, pulling tarot cards and masking our true emotions to spare our loved ones from pain. From a lyrical honesty that’s as confronting as it is unguarded, Feist writes of “A crucible of apex events that brought life to a new temperature.” and of “A new dimension of self awareness that time and experience seemed to require.” Her sixth full-length and first release since 2017’s critically lauded Pleasure, Multitudes took shape soon after the birth of her daughter and sudden death of her father, a back-to-back convergence of life-altering events that left the Canadian singer/songwriter with “Nothing performative in me anymore.” As she cleansed her songwriting of any tendency to obscure unwanted truths, Feist slowly made her way toward a batch of songs rooted in a raw and potent realism which is touched with otherworldly beauty.

Largely written and workshopped during an intensely communal experimental show of the same name through 2021 and 2022, the songs developed in parallel with and were deeply influenced by the mutuality of the unconventional experience. Incorporating such elements as real-time video explorations of the audience, a subtle dramaturgical disarming of normalized conventions between performer and observer, and ATMOS surround sound, the “egalitarian theatre experiment”, created in collaboration with Rob Sinclair (Peter Gabriel, David Byrne) embodied an expansive, exploratory, and elegantly wayward sound that immediately invited a more receptive state of mind, and was lauded as “A work of genius.” (Toronto Star)

At the completion of the developmental run of residencies and in turning to the task of creating the album in a bespoke residential studio in the California Redwoods, Feist produced alongside her frequent co-producers Mocky and Robbie Lackritz, with an ensemble including Todd Dahlhoff, Amir Yaghmai, Shahzad Ismaily (Lou Reed, Tom Waits) and Gabe Noel (Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington) with guest appearances by Blake Mills (Bob Dylan, Perfume Genius) and longtime collaborator Chilly Gonzales. A supreme setting for her enchanting voice and all its manifestations, Multitudes unfolds with a near-symphonic grandeur despite its moments of absolute starkness, lending an endlessly mesmeric quality to Feist’s meditations on mortality and connection and the frenetic state of the human condition.

ABOUT ALLISON RUSSELL

Since the release of her first solo album two years ago, the self-taught singer, songwriter, poet, activist, and multi-instrumentalist Allison Russell has redefined what artistry means in the 21st century. Outside Child, her often devastating, deeply moving, cathartic celebration of survivor’s joy, has become one of the most acclaimed albums of the past 10 years⎯(various honors include eight GRAMMY Award nominations, the Juno Award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year, the 2022 Americana Music Association’s Album of the Year Award, two International Folk Music Awards, three Canadian Folk Music Awards, and four UK Americana Music Awards).

The Returner, Russell’s sophomore album, is a body-shaking, mind-expanding, soulful expression of Black liberation, Black love, of Black self-respect. This new album doesn’t just deliver on the massive promise of the last two years, it brilliantly exceeds all reasonable (and unreasonable) expectations and affirms Allison Russell’s place among music’s most vital artists⎯and The Returner as one of 2023’s most essential recordings.

Alongside the Rainbow Coalition Band – a talented ensemble of BIack and POC, queer, and historically marginalized musicians from across the U.S. – Russell uses the power of music in order to spread her message of the “Beloved Community” and is dedicated to lifting others upwards as her own star climbs higher.

Exclusive: Sarah McLachlan announces 'The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour'

Sarah McLachlan is sitting by the fire with her chocolate Labrador retrievers by her side, getting ready to share some exciting news.

The Grammy winner is headed back on the road — for the first time since 2016 — for “The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour,” TODAY.com can exclusively announce.

“It’s going to be awesome,” she says over the phone of her upcoming 2024, 30-date tour celebrating her third studio album. “I spent my 20s and 30s on the road, so I’m no stranger to it. But I will say, I was a lot younger.”

“The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour" will kick off on Saturday, May 25, 2024, in Seattle with back-to-back shows at Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery. It will make stops in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Boston, Nashville, Chicago and many other cities and states, before wrapping on July 6 in Houston.

“It’s like seven weeks long and I’m so excited. It’s such a fun concept to play a record start to finish,” she adds. “I’ve never done that before and ‘Fumbling Towards Ecstasy’ is my favorite records. So super excited about that.”

Joining her on the tour is Feist for all dates across the tour other than Toronto. It will also feature Allison Russell as support.

A moment of absolute freedom and coming into her own

Released on Oct. 22, 1993, “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy,” McLachlan says, signifies a moment in her life when she felt the most free.

“Freedom, emancipation, also like for me, just really coming into my own as an artist, as a human, as a woman, figuring out who I was, and how I want to show up in the world,” she says. “That was me growing up.”

McLachlan calls it her “breakthrough record,” her “personal favorite” and "the easiest record I ever wrote."

“Thinking back on it, I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I was actually single for the first time in my adult life. I didn’t have any kids, and I just got to be completely selfish and immerse myself in the music,” she says. “And it just came really quickly and easily — and that’s not often the case. I was grateful for that experience.”

Preparing for the tour brought back those feelings of “unencumbered by any weight of burdens or challenges,” free to make the music she wanted. Recalling struggling with the creation of her second album, “Solace,” because she was trying to please everyone, with “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy,” she just tried to make herself happy.

What fans can expect on ‘The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour’

McLachlan is excited to revisit the record and include a handful of her other major hits. She’s hoping to curate a two-hour show and potentially ask her fans on social media what other songs they would like to hear.

“I’ve got a big catalog to choose from,” she laughs, before sharing what she’s most looking forward to performing live. “I’m really excited to play ‘Ice.’ ... I probably (haven’t) played that for at least 20 years, and that’s a good dark song. I always liked playing those.”

She’s also excited about playing “”Mary” because she says she’s “never played it live, or I think I haven’t for many, many years.” Her biggest challenge, she says, is reimagining those songs, while keeping true to the original, but still making it authentic to herself and where her life is now.

McLachlan says fans can also expect new music, as she's currently working on a new record. However, she notes that there might not be any new singles out from here until her tour kicks off.

“We’re not there yet, but I can guarantee you there’ll be some new songs on the tour,” she teases. “I’m still in the writing stages right now.”

Produced by Live Nation, here are all her tour dates.

Canadian singer and anti-animal cruelty icon Sarah McLachlan is ready to swap “singing for puppies for singing to people.”

McLachlan, known for her hits “Angel” and “I Will Remember You,” will hit the road next summer to celebrate 30 years of her Grammy-nominated album, “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.” In a cheeky Instagram video shared Monday, the singer — whose music has been associated with heartbreaking animal shelter commercials since the early aughts — assured her fans that “I’m not here to make you cry while showing you the saddest puppies and kittens you’ve ever seen,” and revealed her tour plans.

She continued her video: “I’ll be playing the album in its entirety, along with some of my greatest hits — hopefully all of your favorites, and maybe a few new ones.”
