A GUIDE TO SEA FISHING IN ANGLESEY?

Introduction to sea fishing in anglesey.

Sea fishing in Anglesey is a delightful experience for any angler. With its unique coastal habitat and diverse marine life, the island offers ample opportunities to catch some of the most prized fish in UK waters. Known for its rocky beaches, sheltered coves, and vibrant shipwrecks, Anglesey has become one of the most popular spots for fishing enthusiasts.

One can expect to find a range of species while casting their lines into the waters around Anglesey. From mackerel and bass to cod and whiting , anglers can reel in different fish depending on the season and location. The best time to fish is between February and October when conditions are ripe.

To make your sea fishing experience more enjoyable and fruitful, check tide times before set out as they dictate where fish will be found. It’s important to have suitable gear such as a sturdy rod, bait rods ideally over 12ft long with secure bait clips along with a good quality reel that can handle heavy weights.

The history of sea fishing on Anglesey dates back centuries when locals fished in small boats using rudimentary tools like hand-lines or nets creating a foundation for what is now seen as commendable way of living in modern society. Today Anglers from far-flung places visit Anglesey attracted by the reputation it holds and aim at taking enough home satisfying catches that uplifts honest pride similar to Captain Linnaeus Tripe who documented pictures published over 150 years ago.

Stock up on sea sickness meds and bring a spare change of underwear, because Anglesey’s fish aren’t the only things that’ll make you feel queasy.

Preparing for Sea Fishing Trip in Anglesey

To prepare for your sea fishing trip in Anglesey, you need to make sure you have the right fishing gear , check the weather and tides, and secure a fishing license. These sub-sections are essential to ensure you have a safe and successful fishing experience in Anglesey.

Choosing the Right Fishing Gear

To choose the right fishing gear for your upcoming sea fishing trip in Anglesey, you need to consider several factors. These include the type of fish you intend to catch, the water conditions, and your level of experience as an angler.

While choosing the gear based on your target fish’s characteristics can be a decisive criterion, it is equally important to understand how different water currents and tides can affect your fishing performance. Also, don’t forget to equip yourself with tackle boxes and proper protective gear that suits your skill level in handling specific tools.

My friend John once told me a story about how he went fishing without checking the weather forecast first. He had brought his fly-fishing rods but forgot to pack heavier lines for bottom fishing. When he arrived at his intended location off Anglesey’s rugged coastlines and tide pools, the wind was picking up drastically. Unfortunately, John had no choice but to spend his entire day casting into strong gales without catching any fish.

Better check the weather and tides before your sea fishing trip in Anglesey, otherwise you might end up with a bigger catch than you bargained for – like hypothermia or a stranded boat.

Checking the Weather and Tides

Checking the weather and tides is crucial before embarking on any sea fishing trip in Anglesey. It ensures your safety and increases your chances of catching fish.

Besides consulting tables, reliable sources for keeping track of the weather and tide conditions are Marine Weather Forecast, Windfinder.com or Met Office websites . Knowing the direction of wind can also be helpful as certain winds may blow fish toward a specific area, potentially increasing your chances of success.

Additionally, it’s helpful to prepare for both sunny and rainy weather conditions by packing waterproof clothing, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and warm clothing for when temperatures drop. Bring plenty of snacks and drinks to keep you hydrated throughout the day.

Taking all these precautions will guarantee a safe and fruitful sea fishing trip in Anglesey! Unlicensed fishing may be free, but the fines will cost you more than the one that got away.

Securing a Fishing License

To obtain a permit, visit the local post office or Environment Agency website. You need to provide accurate information and pay the fee. Licenses are available for both freshwater and sea fishing , and you must choose the right one based on your preference.

Remember that fishing regulations vary depending on location, species of fish, and time of year. Therefore, make sure to read all instructions and follow them religiously.

Apart from getting a license, ensure that your boat is in good condition and has all necessary safety equipment onboard. You may also want to consider booking a guide who knows the area well and can help you catch elusive fish.

Lastly, bring appropriate clothing for weather changes and sustenance for long hours on board. These tips will help you get started with your sea fishing adventure in Anglesey!

Get ready to reel in the catch of the day at these top fishing spots in Anglesey, just don’t forget to bring your sea legs and a strong stomach!

Best Spots for Sea Fishing in Anglesey

To find the best spots for sea fishing in Anglesey, explore the Menai Strait, Holyhead Bay, and Rhosneigr. These locations offer diverse opportunities for anglers, each with its own unique charm.

Menai Strait

Nestled between mainland Wales and Anglesey lies the Menai Strait, a renowned sea fishing spot. The Strait has a diverse range of fish species, including conger eel, bass, and plaice .

The fast tidal flow in the area requires expert knowledge to navigate. The rewards for those who can manage it are bountiful catches .

While fishing by boat is more common, a few piers also provide opportunities for those on foot to cast their lines. Intriguingly, there’s an old tale that recounts the time when a fisherman caught an enormous octopus in the Menai Strait. Though true or not, such stories add to the allure of this enchanting location.

Don’t be salty if you don’t catch anything in Holyhead Bay, just grab some fish and chips and pretend you did.

Holyhead Bay

Located on the western side of Anglesey, this beautiful bay is a well-known and popular spot for sea fishing enthusiasts. Holyhead Bay offers a variety of fishing opportunities throughout the year, making it an ideal location for fishermen as well as nature lovers.

The area boasts an abundance of fish species including bass, tope, ray, mackerel, and pollack ; perfect for both beginners and experienced anglers. The rocky coastline offers ideal conditions for those looking to catch bottom-dwelling fish such as conger eels and rockling . Additionally, Holyhead Bay is home to several wrecks that offer exciting deep-sea angling experiences.

One unique feature of Holyhead Bay is that it has been designated as one of only 3 Marine Nature Reserves in Wales – an initiative aimed at protecting marine life. This means that when fishing in this area, fishermen must adhere to certain guidelines in order to preserve the local ecosystem.

Interestingly, during World War II, Holyhead Bay played a crucial role as one of the major bases for the Allied forces’ anti-submarine operations in Western Europe. This further highlights the strategic importance of this bay not only from a military perspective but also from a natural perspective due to its rich marine wildlife.

Rhosneigr: where the fish are biting and the seagulls are judging your angling skills.

For those seeking more adventure, charter boats are readily available to take you out deeper into the Irish Sea. It’s worth noting that fishing restrictions apply in certain areas to preserve marine life – be sure to check the guidelines before heading out.

With its accessible location and thriving sea life, Rhosneigr is not to be missed by any angler. Don’t let your peers catch the next big one; experience Rhosneigr’s top-class fishing today!

Looks like the waters around Anglesey are so bountiful that even Ariel would be jealous.

Types of Fish in Anglesey Waters

To learn about the types of fish in Anglesey waters, dive into this section with “A Guide to Sea Fishing Anglesey?” The solution lies in exploring the various fish you may encounter in these waters. This brief guide will cover Mackerel, Pollock, Bass, Cod, and Whiting, each with their own unique characteristics and behaviours.

  • Mackerel has a distinctive flavour that allows it to be cooked in a variety of ways – grilled, smoked or even pickled.
  • This fish provides a nutritious source of protein and healthy omega-3 fatty acids .
  • Lastly, Mackerel is known for its playful acrobatics when caught, providing memorable moments for both seasoned and novice anglers alike.

Interestingly, Mackerel schools migrate annually towards warmer waters during summer months. During these times, they can be caught in large numbers around Anglesey waters. These migrations have been studied by the University of Exeter, which has discovered that the fish have evolved over time to navigate using magnetic fields.

It is true that despite being a small species of fish, mackerel hosts an extensive oceanic range that makes them appealing not only locally but internationally as well.

Why settle for fish sticks when you can reel in some fresh and flavorful pollock from Anglesey’s waters?

To gain further insight into this species, let’s take a closer look at some key data. The following table provides relevant information about Pollock:

In addition to these facts, Pollock also has a reputation for being lively fighters when caught – ensuring an exciting catch for any angler.

If you’re looking for suggestions on how to catch Pollock successfully, we have some tips! 1. try using lures that mimic smaller baitfish like sandeels or herring. 2. be sure to vary your retrieval speed and use movements that simulate injured prey. Finally, consider fishing around underwater structures such as reefs or shipwrecks where Pollock tend to gather.

By employing these tactics, you can increase your chances of hooking one of these impressive fish on your next trip offshore.

If catching a big bass is your goal, remember: patience is a virtue, but so is a good fishing spot.

Here is a table showing information about two types of bass:

Aside from being an excellent game fish target, bass is also highly valued as a culinary delicacy due to its firm texture and mild-flavoured flesh.

Pro Tip: Using live bait, such as mackerel or sandeel, can significantly increase your chances of catching larger bass.

Why settle for just one type of fish when you can have both cod and whiting? It’s like getting a ‘surf and turf’ meal, but for fish lovers.

Cod and Whiting

Fun Fact: Cod have a lifespan of up to 25 years and can change colour as they age from mottled grey-green as juveniles to reddish-brown or yellow as adults.

Pro Tip: When preparing cod or whiting for cooking be sure to rinse it under cold water first then pat dry with a paper towel. This helps remove any excess blood or moisture that could cause it to steam rather than sear when you cook it.

Reeling in a big catch is easy with these sea fishing tips, just make sure you don’t end up with a fishy handshake at the end!

Sea Fishing Techniques Tips and Tricks

To improve your sea fishing experience with the best results, in this section, we provide you with the tips and tricks of sea fishing techniques. We have divided this section into three parts – bait techniques, lure fishing techniques, and casting techniques. By exploring these sub-sections, you can understand and apply the right techniques to catch more fish.

Bait Techniques

Professional anglers know that the right bait can make all the difference in sea fishing. Here are some tips to help improve your bait techniques:

  • Experiment with different baits to find out what works best for your target fish.
  • Use fresh or live bait where possible for greater effectiveness.
  • Vary the size and quantity of your bait depending on water conditions and fish appetite.
  • Consider using flavoured or scented bait to attract more fish.
  • Adjust the depth of your bait based on where you think the fish might be swimming.

Additionally, try incorporating your bait into a rig or setup that suits your fishing style. For example, if you prefer drift fishing, use a drifting rig with the right weight and hook arrangement.

It’s important to note that some species of fish have specific preferences when it comes to bait. For example, mackerel and coalfish are known to favour small, shiny lures over actual bait.

According to FishingBooker , one of the most effective baits for sea fishing is squid. Its scent and texture are irresistible to many saltwater species such as cod, bass, and even sharks!

Who needs a dating app when you can lure in a catch with these fishing techniques?

Lure Fishing Techniques

Mastering the art of lure fishing is a game-changer for anglers looking to level up their catch quantity and quality. From selecting the right lure, to using the correct techniques for different types of fish, here are some crucial pointers for successful lure fishing:

  • Pay attention to the type of fish you want to catch and select lures that mimic their prey
  • Focus on the presentation; slow and steady retrieval is ideal for certain lures, while others require a twitch-and-pause technique
  • Vary your casting technique according to weather conditions; wind direction may need adjustments in casting angle and distance
  • Consider colour options; bright colours like chartreuse work well in murky water, while natural tones like brown are suitable for clear water
  • Experiment with scent attractants or incorporating natural bait into your lures
  • Be patient and persistent with your approach, varying techniques until you find what works best on that day

To succeed at lure fishing also requires observation skills that will aid in understanding what techniques work best. Factors such as water temperature and clarity can dictate which type of lures will be most effective.

A good angler is always evolving their skills and expanding their understanding of different species of fish. So get out there, experiment with various lure types, and never stop learning!

Don’t miss out on maximising your chances for bigger fish using these tried-and-true tips on mastering lure fishing . With practice, patience and perseverance, anyone can become an expert in this thrilling sport. Happy fishing!

Cast your line like you’re trying to catch a mermaid, but settle for a fish instead.

Casting Techniques

To have a smooth and accurate cast, remember to keep your elbows down and close to your body. Always keep an eye on your target, and ensure you’re using appropriate gear for your intended catch.

Interestingly, casting techniques date back centuries ago when indigenous people used simple tools like sticks and spears to hunt fish. Later on, with technological advancements came modern tackle and more sophisticated techniques that we still use today.

Don’t forget your life jacket, because fish aren’t the only thing that can drag you under in Anglesey.

Safety Tips for Sea Fishing in Anglesey

To ensure your safety during sea fishing in Anglesey, it’s important to take certain precautions. In order to make your fishing trip safer, take a look at our safety tips for sea fishing in Anglesey. Wearing appropriate clothing and equipment, being aware of surrounding and changing weather conditions, and carrying a first aid kit and emergency contact numbers are some of the things that we will discuss in this section.

Wearing Appropriate Clothing and Equipment

Sea fishing in Anglesey can be a thrilling adventure, but safety should always come first. Wearing appropriate clothing and equipment can ensure that you have an enjoyable experience without any unexpected mishaps.

To ensure your safety while sea fishing in Anglesey, follow this three-step guide:

  • Wear layers of warm clothes to protect yourself from the chilly sea breeze. A waterproof jacket and trousers will keep you dry and warm.
  • Invest in a good pair of non-slip boots to avoid slipping on wet surfaces. Wearing gloves can also provide extra grip and protection against sharp hooks or fish spines.
  • Don’t forget to wear a life jacket, even if you’re a strong swimmer. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Remember that prevention is better than cure. In case of any accident, make sure to bring basic first aid kit with you. Also, try to avoid wearing any jewelry as it can easily get caught up in the fishing line or reel.

Lastly, for a pro tip, invest in polarized sunglasses as they help reduce glare and enable you to see fish clearly underwater . Happy sea fishing!

Don’t let the weather ruin your fishing trip, unless of course, you’re into extreme sport fishing.

Being Aware of Surrounding and Changing Weather Conditions

Safety should be the topmost priority for anglers when venturing to Anglesey’s coastal waters. Unforeseeable weather conditions can pose a potential threat, making it essential to have a keen eye on surroundings and changing weather patterns. Pay attention to the forecast before setting out on your fishing excursion, but also remain hyper-vigilant when out at sea. Noticing sudden wind or temperature changes is crucial to avoid any mishaps.

One significant aspect that many overlook while enjoying fishing in Anglesey is the importance of being aware of your surroundings . Even if the weather appears calm, unexpected changes or hazardous situations are always lurking around the corner. Therefore, it’s imperative to be conscious of your surroundings at all times while keeping an eye on other boats and watercraft nearby.

Suppose you’re looking for reliable sources to check for severe weather warnings or up-to-date marine assessments. In that case, you can check out authoritative websites like The Met Office or Maritime Coastguard Agency’s website for real-time weather data and comprehensive weather updates, which could massively aid in ensuring safety while fishing in Anglesey.

Did you know marine forecasts are necessary for boat captains and their passengers to determine if they should brave rough waters? According to Professor Ed Hill from Ocean Science at Southampton University’s National Oceanography Centre in England, “ When traveling beyond sheltered areas like harbours or estuaries, sailors must check minimal wind speed and tidal waves height limits defined by marine forecasts .

Always bring a first aid kit when sea fishing in Anglesey, because the only thing worse than a fish hook in your finger is not being prepared for it.

First Aid Kit and Emergency Contact Numbers

For a safe and enjoyable sea fishing experience in Anglesey, it is crucial to be prepared for emergencies. Being out in the open sea can lead to unforeseen circumstances that may require immediate attention. Here are some important tips for keeping a First Aid Kit and Emergency Contact Numbers on hand:

  • Ensure that your First Aid Kit includes bandages, antiseptic creams, painkillers , and any necessary medication.
  • Store the kit in a waterproof container or bag to prevent water damage.
  • Make sure everyone onboard knows where the First Aid Kit is located and how to use it.
  • Keep Emergency Contact Numbers handy, such as the Coastguard or RNLI, and share these with everyone onboard.
  • In case of an emergency, call for help immediately rather than waiting until it’s too late.

It is worth noting that sea fishing regulations also require fishermen to have a VHF radio on board for communication purposes. Another important essential is ‘flares’ which play a key role in alerting other vessels nearby if an emergency arises.

When out at sea, weather conditions can change rapidly and cause unexpected issues. Therefore, having a well-stocked first aid kit along with emergency contacts could save your life or those on board.

Don’t risk being unprepared when you’re enjoying the great outdoors on the Welsh coast. Take these tips seriously and stay safe while enjoying the best fishing experience Anglesey has to offer!

Fish may not be the only thing you catch in Anglesey, but following these safety tips will prevent you from becoming the catch of the day.

Anglesey, and north Anglesey in particular, extends into the Irish sea, so it’s the perfect place for sea fishing. Whether you’re a complete novice or an experienced angler, here are some top tips on sea fishing in Anglesey, from essential equipment and safety to the best times to go and the best fishing trip providers in the area.

Top tips for those new to sea fishing

top tips for sea fishing

Interested in sea fishing but don’t know where to start? Here are some top tips for the beginners out there:

Essential equipment

Making sure you have the right equipment is very important; for a normal sea fishing trip make sure you have:

  • Rod and reel
  • Sharp knife
  • A bucket to keep your catches in
  • A cloth to wipe your hands
  • Spare spool of line
  • Small first aid kit
  • Small pair of pliers

This is just to give you an idea of what you will need but please seek advice from a fishing expert before going out on your first trip.

Other items you might want to take along could include a chopping board, night sticks and sellotape.

Safety is paramount when it comes to sea fishing. Here are some important things to consider when heading out:

  • Don’t go alone – it is recommended to always take a friend with you, especially if you’re fishing in a particularly dangerous area and during the winter months when there are less people around; if you are going alone then make sure to let someone know when and where you’re going
  • Floatation suit – essential if you ever fall in the water, the water gets very cold and the current very strong so you’ll need all the help you can get
  • Whistle – this is a cheap item and can help to get attention if you do fall in the water; it can be difficult to shout if you’re in cold water
  • Mobile phone – keeping your phone in a waterproof bag is a great way to make sure you don’t damage it in case you need to get in touch with someone

When is the best time to go sea fishing on Anglesey?

the best time to go sea fishing

When you choose to go sea fishing on Anglesey all depends on the type of experience you’re looking for and what type of fish you’re looking to catch. Conditions and species of fish available can vary month by month so here’s an overview of what you can expect (this may vary depending on where on Anglesey you are fishing):

January, February, March, April

This time of year can offer some calm, sunny days with good visibility. You could have the chance to catch herring, thornbacks, whiting and dabs as well as pollock and cod. This tends to pick up in April so you may notice a more plentiful catch.

May and June

This a great time for sea fishing and you can expect to find herring, coalfish, codling, spurdog and bass. At the beginning of June you’ll also notice more pollock and mackerel, as well as gurnards and tope starting to show.

July, August, September, October

All sorts of species can be found during these months, including large quantities of quality pollock as well as codling and coalfish. You may even find some conger eels and ling or some good quality tope, rays and gurnards as well as bull huss and the occasional turbot.

November and December

This time of year sees a gradual return to winter fishing and you’ll notice a decline in certain species such as tope, mackerel and gurnards. At this time of year you can expect to find pollock and codling as well as whiting, dabs and plaice. Herring also make a return at this time.

Times of day

Time of day also plays a part in sea fishing; for example, dawn and dusk are good times with dawn, in particular, being the best. That’s if you’re willing to get out of bed before dawn!

If you’re planning on going during the day, make sure to check the tide predictions for the day. A rising tide or high tide are usually the best times for most fish as most types of fish prefer the higher water. On a new moon and full moon, the day and the three consecutive days after it will have the highest tides of the month.

However, this isn’t always the case. For example, some fish prefer hunting on a low tide and when the tide is turning.

If you know what type of fish you’re hoping to catch, it would be best to ask a local tackle shop or there are lots of fishing forums out there that can help.

Starida Fishing Trips

Starida fishing trips are based in the picturesque town of Beaumaris on the Menia Straits. Moreover the trips leave from Beaumaris pier which rises and falls with the tide allowing trips at both high and low. A modern little marvel, that it is.

The picture shows the kiosk where you must pay for Starida fishing trips

The kiosk pic above shows there are various lengths of Starida sea fishing trips available. The two / three hour trips are quick fishing trips, so these are family oriented to allow you to try it out. All equipment hire and bait needed is included in the price for these trips. By the same token this allows you to just hop aboard and have a go with no worries. Likewise the skipper is more than helpful too, getting you setup and leaving you with nothing to worry about.

The picture shows a young boy while out on a Starida fishing trip, he has caught a small fish and is smiling

These shorter trips take you up towards Puffin Island or further into the straits if the weather is poor. You can catch a wide range of different species in the Menai, from little fish to small sharks, Bass and Rays. All are a possibility on these trips. Moreover there is always a chance to see Seals or Dolphins too as they often visit the surrounding waters.

a picture of a man holding a large Bull Huss he has just caught on a Starida sea fishing trip

Starida was in for servicing on one occasion so a small group of us went out on a smaller boat. The pictures are of the smaller boat, it was the owners son potting boat. We caught and that’s what counts and the skipper is always trying to get you on the fish. Whats more he was great fella too and had the whole group laughing.

A young boy aboard Starida2 being shown how to steer the boat during a Starida fishing trip

He even let the children aboard have a quick go of the boat, taking time to explain the instruments. It made it a far more interactive experience for them and not just a fishing trip. Tried and tested!

A great little trip for all the family because fishing and a boat ride all rolled in to one is great. You will see the same views and wildlife as you would on the cruises, whats not to like! It really is a great little trip, not too short or too long for younger children either.

young boy standing next to the fishing boat, he has both thumbs up and a smile on his face

For the more avid fishermen you can hire equipment and bait (£6) or take your own aboard these longer trips. The 4-6 hours trips help enthusiasts indulge in their hobby whilst on holiday!

The 8-10 hours trips are for more experienced anglers and enthusiasts alike. Moreover they involve travelling out to known hots spots or indulging in a bit of wreck fishing. Reef fishing and deep water marks are accessible on these longer trips, allowing you to catch bigger fish species. Rod and Bait hire on these trips costs £12pp.

Sea fishing is great and will be well cared for on these trips. Try it and you might love it!

The peaceful Llyn (Lake) Cefni at Bodffordd

There are many places to fish on Anglesey , both for the sea angler and the coarse fisherman. With several lakes originally formed during the ice age, and the two largest lakes man-made. These two lakes are Llyn (Lake) Alaw and Llyn Cefni. A visit to Lake Cefni (located in the village of Bodffordd) can be a great day out, as whilst the fishermen fish (boats available for hire), there is an opportunity to walk around this large lake, and take in the beauty of the countryside, watching the many species of birds, ducks, geese, and swans. Take a picnic, as all you will find out here is – simply Nature.

Fishing at Amlwch Port Quay

Whilst taking photos of Amlwch Port, I came across this bunch of lads from Liverpool. They were fishing off the end of the quay and had caught whiting, several coalfish, and a flattie. They apparently travel quite often to fish here, and say it is a good mark in the summer months. Great set of lads.

Llyn Alaw Reservoir Fish

Another wonderful place to fish on Anglesey is Llyn (Lake) Alaw. A large expanse of water where it is easy to fish from the sides, and in parts, you may even take your car.

Anglesey is of course totally surrounded by water – sea water, and it is almost possible to fish the sea from anywhere. Whether you want to fish from a boat, the rocks, or from the beach, you are sure to enjoy the time here.
