How can i find a cheap cruise.

Cheap cruise deals are fairly easy to find in most cases, and you can begin by considering what kind of features and itinerary you want. The more simplistic the experience is, the cheaper it is in general. On Expedia.com, you can filter for specific features and sort your results by price. By mixing and matching certain features, unforgettable experiences may be available with discount cruises. For example, booking a cruise with stunning restaurants and live performances while opting for an inside cabin without an ocean view window or balcony could be ideal for a traveler who doesn't plan on spending much time in their cabin anyways

It's certainly worth it for a unique experience no other method of travel can match.

Which cruise line is the cheapest?

Still, Carnival Cruise tends to be very affordable overall, most of the time with great options like the Carnival Sunrise and Carnival Horizon . Booking a luxury cruise means you can expect high-end amenities including gourmet restaurants, sizable suites, top-tier performances, massive pools, and much more.

What are the best cruises for couples?

Viking Cruises have much to offer for a more romantic experience. Romantic cruises offer exceptional service as well as cozy suites for you and your partner to enjoy that's complemented by delicious food often themed around the cruise destination.

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?

Whether or not you need a passport depends on where you're going and the kind of cruise it is. Any US territory like Bermuda and Puerto Rico won't require a passport, of course, but you also don't need one if you're on a closed-loop cruise. This is a cruise that begins and ends at a US cruise terminal, even if there are stops in other countries on the way.

Cruise Cost Calculator: See How Much Your Trip Will Cost

One of the big draws with cruising? It can be an affordable vacation that allows you to travel to distant ports, eat world-class food, and enjoy loads of entertainment for drastically less than you’d pay if you booked all these items separately.

But truth be told, the costs of cruising can add up quickly. Between getting to the port to excursions to the actual cruise itself, the costs can add up, making budgeting more difficult.

To help you out, we’ve created a cruise cost calculator. The calculator below offers a chance to estimate your expenses for your trip, with all the major spending areas you’ll find a cruise. Simply input details about your trip and see how much you should budget for your trip.

Need more details about what amounts to put in certain fields? Read below to learn more about each section and what you might spend.

Estimating Cruise Expenses

Transportation to the Port You can’t start your trip without getting to the ship first. Transportation amounts vary depending on where you are coming from and which port you are sailing from. Assuming you are arriving at an airport, you’ll obviously spend the greatest amount to get to cruise ports farther away. Ports like Galveston and Port Canaveral are located far from the nearest airports and you can expect to spend between $40-60 each way for the cheapest options. Ports like Tampa , Port Everglades , and Miami are just a short ride away and you can get to the port for about $10 per person.

Parking If you are driving from the port, then you don’t have to worry about paying for a ride to the ship. But you do have to pay to park your car during your stay. Parking at the port is the most convenient option, but also the most expensive. You can expect to pay between $10-$20 per day. Want to save? Look for independent parking lots with cheaper prices, or if staying at a hotel near the port, look for one that lets you park for free during your cruise in return for one night’s stay.

Cruise Fare Cruise fares are advertised with enticingly low headline fares. However, you will actually end up paying much more. First, that headline fare is for a single person. Right away you can double the price as cruise cabins are typically sold based on two travelers. Second, the headline rates are for interior cabins. Most people decide to upgrade to nicer cabin, increasing the price. Finally, quoted cruise fares don’t include taxes and port fees. In total, the price you actually pay can be double or triple that headline rate that’s advertised.

Be sure you include the total cost of your cruise when using the calculator — not just the headline price.

Gratuities Our calculator automatically estimates gratuities based on the number of days and people traveling. While gratuities can vary, they usually run about $13 per person, per day. So a couple traveling together can expect to pay $26 per day, total.

Excursions Unless you plan to hang out on the ship or find a beach nearby, then you’ll likely want an excursion when in port. Excursions can be fun and make a memorable experience when in port. They can also be expensive. Cheap excursions run about $50 while the most expensive can be $150 per person. If traveling with kids, their ticket is usually a little cheaper, but not by much. You can see excursions you’d like to book on your cruise line’s website to get a better idea of what you might spend on a particular outing.

Alcoholic Beverages Drinking is a big draw on a cruise ship. There’s lots of time spent on the ship and bars are abundant. You can either purchase drinks one by one (they run about $7 for a beer and $10 for a cocktail) or you can purchase a drink package what allows you to drink what you want for one set price. If you need help on estimating what you might spend on drinks on a cruise, you can try our Drink Package Calculator here.

Gambling Want to gamble on your cruise? Be prepared for some poor payouts. The casinos on a cruise ship offer all the games you’d expect, including blackjack, slots, video poker, roulette, and craps. But with a ship full of people and no other casinos around, the payouts offered aren’t that great .

Still, gambling is a fun way to pass the time if you like gaming. Just budget accordingly.

Specialty Dining One of the good things about cruising is that all the food you can eat is included in the price of the cruise fare. But in the past few years the cruise lines have started to offer specialty dining as well. These are separate restaurants from the main dining room that offer things like Italian food, Mexican food, or steaks. You don’t have to eat here, but compared to the prices you’d find on land, these specialty restaurants are a deal (think $35 a person for a steakhouse meal). However, they still cost extra and you’ll want to include the cost when budgeting.

Spa Treatments There’s not much that’s more relaxing than a spa treatment, but it can be expensive on the ship. Prices vary based on deals offered during your trip and the type of treatment you choose. As a rule of thumb, don’t expect to leave the spa without spending at least $100 per person — and possibly more if you decide to get multiple treatments.

Souvenirs/Miscellaneous: What’s a vacation without souvenirs? From professional photos taken by the cruise line to cheap trinkets sold in port, there’s always an opportunity to spend money on souvenirs. And don’t forget miscellaneous things like meals in port, duty-free shopping , and more.

A 7-day cruise can be a great family vacation option, but it can also be expensive. How much you’ll end up paying will depend on the cruise line and the specific cruise itinerary. Here is some information on what to expect cost-wise for a 7-day cruise. Many people are confused and asking how much is a 7 day cruise ? Prices can vary greatly by many different factors.

How How Much Does a Cruise Cost? (Really)

I’m regularly asked to help people get a cruise deal , but most people don’t understand the different cruise fares and the overall cost of a cruise and cruise vacation.

How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

Find The Right Cruise For You

I sold cruises at different times and one of the training scenarios was to pair the person with the type of car they drove. As funny as this may sound at first, it kind of still holds true in some respects. A modern-day cruise aboard a mega ship is like a floating resort at sea. A person who drives an economy car might be fine with a budget cruise line. However, A person driving a luxury car will surely have different expectations. Cruising, in general, is all very impressive, but it is often the small details that as a whole that often help differentiate each cruise product’s overall customer experience.

The resort comparison is probably better for today’s comparison. So do you want a budget cruise line to keep your cruise costs lower where many luxury items are optional, or do you want to look at luxury cruise lines where most things are included?

The average cost of a 7-day cruise is $1,500 per person based on double occupancy. However, this price can range from $700 to $4,000 per person, depending on the cruise line and specific itinerary. For example, a 7-day Caribbean cruise on a luxury cruise line like Regent Seven Seas might cost around $4,000 per person, while a similar cruise on a more budget-friendly cruise line like Carnival could cost as little as $700 per person.

So, how much you’ll pay for a 7-day cruise depends on your preferences and budget. If you’re looking for a luxurious experience with all the bells and whistles, you can expect to pay on the high end of the spectrum. However, if you’re more interested in a budget-friendly option, there are plenty of great cruises available that won’t break the bank.

A Solo cabin aboard Holland America Line’s MS Koningsdam

Cruising Solo

Unfortunately, cruises are often priced and sold based on double occupancy. They may have sales where they reduce the fare of the second person, and this is where working with a great travel agent who specializes in cruises can help. They can help solo cruises find these deals and also let you know about them when they happen.

The good news is cruise lines like Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises , Royal Caribbean, and Cunard now offer single occupancy or solo cabins. I think this offering will continue to grow with other cruise lines.

Norwegian Cruise Line has been a leader in this, offering single cabins called Studios and even a connected area called the Studio Lounge of many of their ships just for solo cruisers. These are a great way to get away on a trip by yourself and not have to pay extra or be penalized.

airport cab car person

Getting to the Ship

If you’re flying to your cruise port, be sure to budget for airfare . The average cost of a round-trip domestic flight to a major cruise port is around $300-$400. If you’re flying internationally, the cost will be higher.

In addition, you may also need to budget for transportation to and from the airport. The average cost of a taxi from the airport to the cruise port is around $50-$60. If you’re looking to save money, you can also take public transportation or rent a car.

If you taking a Southern Caribbean cruise you may have to fly to Puerto Rico to cruise out of the Port of San Juan. This has always been a port that offers easy access to many exotic Caribbean cruise itineraries for cruise lines. This ofcourse has to be factored in the cruise price if visiting this part of the World is a must.

So, before booking your cruise, be sure to factor in all the associated costs of getting there. This will help you ensure that you’re not surprised by any unexpected expenses down the road.

Hotel Door

Pre-Cruise Hotels

If you’re not traveling from close by, you may also need to budget for a pre-cruise hotel stay if you fly in the day before or stay overnight after your cruise is over. The average cost of a one-night stay in a hotel near a major cruise port is around $150-$200. So, if you’re traveling from far away, be sure to budget for at least one pre-cruise night in a hotel.

This way, you’ll be well-rested and ready to board your cruise ship !

Princess Cruises All-Inclusive Premier Package

Drinks Onboard

In addition to the cost of the cruise itself, you’ll also need to budget for drinks while onboard. Most cruise lines offer a la carte prices for alcoholic drinks, and the price can add up quickly.

For example, a cocktail might cost $10-$12, while a beer or glass of wine could cost around $6. So, if you plan on drinking a lot during your cruise, be sure to budget accordingly. Here is a sample drink menu from Carnival Cruise Line:

  • Beer: starting at $6.50 (mostly 16 ounces)
  • Wine by the glass: starting at $9.50
  • Mixed Drinks: $7.50 – $20.00
  • Specialty Cocktails: starting at $10.50 (excluding souvenir glassware and premium selections)
  • Soft Drinks: $2.75
  • Specialty Coffees: $2.50 – $4.25
  • Energy Drinks: $4.95
  • Water (San Benedetto bottled water and Coconut Water): $1.50 – $5.00

On the other hand, if you’re not a big drinker, you can probably get by with just a bit of spending money for tips and incidentals. In any case, it’s important to know what to expect before you set sail.

If you plan to drink often, consider your cruise line’s drink packages. Just be sure to consider the price and restrictions of the drink packages. The packages can be expensive so consider if it’s worth it. Most major cruise lines, such as Carnival cruise line, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian cruise line, offer several types of drink and soda packages. Some have them just for specialty coffees.

So, before booking your cruise, be sure to factor in all the associated drinking costs while onboard. This will help you ensure that you’re not surprised by any unexpected expenses down the road.

River Cruise Tour

Shore Excursions

One of the best parts of a cruise is the opportunity to explore different ports of call. Most cruise lines offer a variety of shore excursions, from sightseeing tours to outdoor adventures. These excursions can be expensive, however, so it’s important to budget for them accordingly.

The average cost of a shore excursion is around $100 per person. However, this price can vary depending on the type of excursion and the port of call. For example, a snorkeling tour in the Caribbean might cost more than a city tour in Europe.

So, before booking your cruise, research the available shore excursions and budget accordingly. This will help you make the most of your vacation !

Food, Glorious Food, Back In Cruise Spotlight

Specialty Dining

Another great thing about cruising is the opportunity to sample different cuisines worldwide. Most cruise ships offer a variety of specialty dining options, from sushi bars to Italian trattorias. These dining experiences can be expensive, however, so it’s important to budget for them accordingly.

The average cost of a specialty dining experience is around $30-$40 per person. However, this price can vary depending on the type of restaurant. For example, a steakhouse on a luxury cruise ship might cost more than a casual restaurant on a budget-friendly cruise line.

So, before booking your cruise, research the available specialty dining options and budget accordingly. This will help you make the most of your vacation!

Tips are not mandatory, but they are customary.

The added expense of gratuities can often sneak up on people as tips for service staff. Tips are not mandatory, but they are customary and typically range from $10 to $12 per person daily. This fee is automatically added to your onboard expense account and can be paid upfront when you initially book your cruise.

Port Canaveral's Terminal 3 Parking Garage

Cruise Port Parking

If you’re driving to your cruise port, you’ll need to budget for parking fees. The average cost of parking at a cruise port is around $20-$25 per day. So, if you’re driving to your port, factor in this added expense. Some cruise terminals now offer Valet cruise parking which is a great option but, comes at an extra price for convenience.

Royal Caribbean also has a special page that lists all their  themed cruises . You can also go on a  Star Trek The Cruise  ( www.startrekthecruise.com ) aboard a Royal Caribbean ship. Viking Longship in Paris

River cruises

These smaller cruises usually sail along inland waterways in the USA, Europe, or Asia and offer a more intimate experience with fewer crowds and more opportunities to explore the local culture. Some examples of the different river cruise lines are Viking, AmaWaterways, Emerald Cruises, and American Cruise Lines .

Princess Cruises Takes You Into The Heart of Alaska

Cruise Tours

A cruise tour combines a cruise with a land tour, usually in destinations like Alaska or the Mediterranean. This is a great option if you want to see multiple places on one trip

Prices for different types of cruises

Prices for different types of cruises vary widely, depending on the type of cruise, the destination, and the level of luxury. But generally, you can expect to pay anywhere from $200 to $5,000 per person for a cruise.

One tip is to try to calculate the price of the cruise on a per-day basis. When doing this, try to come up with an average total cost of a cruise from each of the different cruise lines you are considering.

This will give you a realistic view of the cruise prices. For example, That budget cruise might not be such a good deal when you add up all the extra costs or add-ons. You may find a better value with a different brand with a higher upfront cost, but you save more overall when the extras are included in the price.

Cruise Ship Cabin Types

There are several different types of cabins you can choose from on a cruise ship, and the type you choose will affect the price. Here are some of the most popular cabin types:

An interior stateroom

Interior cabins

These cabins do not have any windows, but they are typically the most affordable option.

An oceanview cabin

Oceanview Cabins

These cabins have a window that offers passengers a view of the ocean. They are a bit more expensive than interior cabins but still offer good value for the price.

How to save money on a cruise

There are a few ways to lower your overall cruise cost on cruises:

Many cruise lines offer discounts for early bookings and often offer cruises a year or more in advance. You may see many promotions during the year as the cruise gets closer, but the best price was almost always when it was first available to be booked.

Choose a less popular departure date or destination

This can save you up to 50% off the regular cruise rates. For example, booking a Caribbean cruise at certain times of the season can save you a lot. That same cruise priced at it’s highest in July can be had for much less if you are flexible when it’s much cheaper in the months of September, October, and November.

Guaranteed Category Cabins

Cruise lines will often offer a “guaranteed” category cabin. This means you can get a certain category type, such as an Interior cabin, Oceanview, or Balcony cabin, and the cruise line guarantees it.

These room types are often $100 cheaper per person. However, In exchange, the cruise line will ultimately pick your cabin location and final category. I have booked these several times, and it’s a great way to cut cruise costs if you don’t need a specific location and are flexible. Please note these are NOT always available on every sailing or cruise line.

Package Deals

These can be a great way to lower the overall cruise cost. Some cruise lines offer package deals that include airfare, hotel stays, and other extras. This can be a great way to cruise on a budget during your trip and have everything taken care of in one go.

Group Rates

Travel agents often have access to exclusive discounts and group cruise rates. They can help you find the best deal for your needs. If you’re willing to take a last-minute cruise, you can often get a great deal. Being flexible with your travel plans can save you a lot of money.

What’s included in the price

The price of a cruise includes transportation, accommodations, and most meals in the cruise fare. It also often includes activities and entertainment, as well as access to the ship’s facilities. Some cruise lines also offer special deals that include extras like airfare, hotel stays, or wine tastings.

Cunard Greeting

What’s not included in the price

The price of a cruise does not generally include airfare, ground transportation, or shore excursions. You will also need to budget for incidentals like tipping, souvenirs, and laundry. Some cruise lines offer all-inclusive packages that include these extras, but they tend to be more expensive. Cruise prices can vary so much in terms of what is an add-on and what is included.

Port St. Maarten

Port Fees and Taxes

Each cruise will come with port fees which are the cost for the ship to dock in a certain port. The port normally charges each passenger a fee, and this charge is included in the price of the cruise. These port fees are a fixed cost and can not be reduced or waived. So when you are booking a cruise, a 7-day cruise with more port visits will often cost more.

For example, a Western Caribbean cruise may have fewer ports and lower port fees overall compared to an Eastern Caribbean cruise. Some popular ports may also charge a higher fee than a less popular port. Each of these things may come into consideration when comparing cruise vacation prices.

MSC Seaside, Zip line

Onboard Spending

What you spend onboard can add up quickly, so it’s important to plan and know what to expect. Here are some of the most common expenses:

Alcoholic drinks and soft drinks can be expensive on a cruise ship, and many mainstream cruise lines charge a premium for drinks served in certain venues or specialty restaurants. Many passengers don’t look at the prices before ordering so having a drink package can be helpful.

Another great cruise tip is to limit your drinking while onboard and drink while visiting a port. What’s better than having a nice drink while overlooking the beach in Grand Cayman or

Cucina Del Capitano

Cruise Line Specialty Items and Dining

Most cruises come with breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals, coffee, and even snacks included in the basic cost of the cruise. However, They now offer specialty restaurants and even items ranging from coffee, desserts, and even pizzas. If you want room service this may be included at some times of the day but, many cruise lines now offer items for a fee or have a service fee. On more inclusive cruise room service and many items are included in the price of the cruise.

MSC Seaside, Arcade Games & Bowling

Onboard Cruise Activities

There are usually a lot of activities available on a cruise ship, and many of them come with a price tag. Some examples include spa treatments, escape rooms, bowling, and arcade games. Historically, the average price of a cruise has remained low for a very long time but, the optional extras and add-ons have continued to grow.

This often leads to guests being surprised at the total cost of the cruise when they get the final bill. This is why it’s nice to receive an onboard credit when booking the cruise to help offset some of these unforeseen extras once onboard.

submarine ride

If you want to explore the ports of call on your cruise, you’ll need to pay for tours. These can range from a simple bus tour to an all-day adventure zip-lining through the jungle. Shore excursion prices and the types of availability may differ from port to port. This can be a big consideration when booking a cruise.

For example, when taking a Caribbean cruise, an island tour and other options will be more affordable than most excursions offered on an Alaskan or European cruise , where the tours are often more expensive and enriching. Most port cities have taxis readily available to offer you a tour of the major sites to drive you from place to place. Be sure only to use the government licenses taxis and take precautions.

The nice thing about cruising is it allows you to experience the new places you visit and even do activities like hot air ballooning, snorkeling, diving in a submarine, boat rides and more.

Royal Caribbean Ships By Age

Which cruise line is right for you

The type of cruise you choose should be based on your budget and what you’re looking for in a vacation. If you’re looking for a family-friendly vacation with plenty of activities, a standard cruise is the best option.

If you’re interested in a themed vacation or want to explore a new destination, there are specialty cruises available for just about every interest.

River cruises are a great option if you want to experience a more intimate setting, while cruise tours are perfect for those who want to see multiple destinations in one trip. If money is no object, luxury cruises offer the ultimate in extravagance.

How To Book A Cruise

The best way to book a cruise is through a professional travel agent specializing in cruise travel. Travel agents are familiar with the different cruise lines and can help you choose the one that’s right for you. They can also often get you discounts and perks you wouldn’t be able to get on your own.

If you’re booking a cruise on your own, the best way to start is by researching online. Read reviews of different cruise lines and compare prices to find the best deal. Once you’ve found a cruise you’re interested in, call the cruise line or book online.

When To Book A Cruise

It’s generally best to book a cruise 6-12 months in advance. This will give you the widest selection of dates and itineraries. If you’re booking a last-minute cruise, you may be able to find some great deals, but you won’t have as many options to choose from.

What You Need To Know Before Booking A Cruise

Before booking a cruise, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

Your Budget

Cruises can be expensive, so it’s important to set a budget and stick to it. The advertised fare is not really what the cruise cost. Most advertisements do not include port fees and taxes, which are mandatory and can add hundreds per person to the overall cruise fare. Many people new to cruising often want to take a shorter cruise. However, the shorter cruises are often in higher demand and can cost more per day than a longer cruise.

Newer cruise ships may do a few short cruises occasionally, but, they normally do seven days or more. So I recommend a longer cruise if you want a better value on your cruise fare.

Viking Christmas Markets Review: Passau

Your Travel Dates

Be flexible with your travel dates to get the best price. The time of year and when you cruise can be a significant factor in the cruise price. One rule of thumb to follow is this.

If the kids are out of school, the cruise fare can be two to three times higher. So people may choose to take their kids out of school for a special vacation, or retired couples may choose to go on a cruise when kids are in school.

Sometimes being flexible can help earn extra onboard credit or help you lower your overall cruise costs.

Half Moon Cay

Your Destination

Choose a destination, and port stops that interest you and are within your budget. Where you choose to cruise can also be a major factor in your overall cruise fare. For example, You may be able to drive to Port Canaveral in FL or for Caribbean cruises.

You are already saving money compared to your fellow cruise passengers who may have to fly to the port. Carnival Cruises has focused on offering cruises closer to home for US cruisers.

They now have cruise ships home porting in ports all around the United States in locations like Port Canaveral, Port Galveston, Long Beach Cruise Terminal, and more.

How Much Does a Cruise Cost? (2023) | 9

Do some research on different cruise ships to find one that has the amenities and activities that you’re looking for. I try to get one of the cruise line’s newest ships. Cruise lines put the best of everything on their new flagship vessels.

This can often include interior design, cabin amenities, specialty restaurants, food options, entertainment, and more. Another thing to think about is the crew. Most new ships also have the best of the crew and officers onboard to deliver a prized experience.

If you’re looking to lower your overall cruise costs, you can often book an older ship with the same amenities that are in less demand compared to the newest ship and save money on the overall cruise cost.

a woman checking a world map

Your Travel Agent

If you’re using a travel agent , choose one specializing in booking cruises. The cruise lines now offer special training and certifications to agents who become experts in that specific cruise line. Look for these certifications as well as CLIA certifications.

Working with a good cruise-based agent can come with so many benefits. You  normally  don’t have to pay extra to worth with a personal travel agent. The cruise line pays them a commission after the sale, and you pay no more than you would if you booked directly with the cruise line.

An expert travel agent can offer your cruise tips , offer special cruise deals. These experts can advise you on the benefits of possibly spending just a few hundred dollars more. Many cruises ask questions like, is a balcony cabin worth it?

Are alcoholic beverages included? How good is the food in the main dining room? They can also help you have a seamless vacation and explain any extra transfer costs or fine print you need to know. They will also be waiting to help you book your next cruise.

ship trip price

Just know the different cruise lines may visit the same ports, but, your overall cruise experience can be very different based on the cruise line your choose to sail with. This can be who your fellow passengers are, the average price of the cruise, overall ambiance and décor, type of entertainment, and food quality and availability. Cruise lines like Disney cruise line, Holland America line, princess cruises

Now that you know how to book a cruise, it’s time to start planning your trip! Use these tips to find the best deal on a cruise that fits your budget and needs. Bon voyage!

11 epic around-the-world cruises that will check off all your bucket list travel destinations

Janice Wald Henderson

Imagine the joys of traveling seamlessly from one bucket list country to another without packing and unpacking, switching hotels, boarding countless flights or even doing laundry.

Think it's a fantasy? It's actually a world cruise, the nirvana of many ocean-going devotees. As a bonus, most of these around-the-world voyages include enviable perks, like pre-cruise hotel stays, alcohol, shipboard credit, exclusive-access shore excursions — and, yes, laundry service.

Retired, taking a job hiatus or working remotely? A world cruise is a safe, easy and exhilarating way to score a global adventure beyond compare. You might even make new lifelong friends sharing similar interests.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

So, pull out your travel wish list and find an itinerary for those coveted destinations.

Here, you can learn more about what's involved in an around-the-world cruise and drool over 11 terrific choices across a range of fares for an incredible monthslong voyage at sea.

What is a world cruise?

Never mind the moniker, a world cruise may visit several continents but not circumnavigate the globe. Cruise lines usually designate one ship (a few offer two) to sail about 100 days or longer — some even sail more than 200 days — without repeating ports.

World cruises traditionally start in January and end around April or May. They sail round-trip from one American city, such as San Francisco or Miami, or offer a choice of starting points on both coasts, making access easy.

What to know about world cruises

With so few world cruises available, book far in advance. Bookings open roughly two years in advance, and some small-ship cruises sell out within hours. You'll need the extra time to make arrangements to leave your home for months. For that reason, this story will focus on 2025 world cruises.

Related: Hot cruises you'll need to book at least 1 year in advance — maybe even 2!

Around-the-world cruise cost

Such lengthy sailings cost plenty. The bigger ship lines offer the lowest fares, although extra fees for what's not included (such as shore excursions and alcohol) can add up quickly. If contemplating a big-ship voyage, read the inclusions carefully, as they vary among lines.

Luxury vessels bundle many costly amenities into the fare, like business- or first-class plane tickets and luxury hotel stays, and charge the most. They also deliver fine dining, pampering service, glam surroundings and impressive special events. (Silversea Cruises has previously rented out an entire island to entertain its world cruise guests.)

Thus, expect considerable price differences. Count on spending about $20,000 per person minimum to score an entry-level accommodation on the bigger ships and approximately $80,000 to $90,000 per person for an ultraluxury vessel.

Note that for the poshest lines, "entry-level" may mean a spacious, elegant suite with a veranda. For other lines, the most basic cabin is a small, windowless room.

Want to island hop around French Polynesia, visit Africa's incredible cities, and cruise through Asia without ever switching hotels or repacking your bags? An around-the-world cruise provides the ultimate itinerary, packed with exciting international destinations (some even visit hard-to-reach destinations like Easter Island and Antarctica), and luxury cruise lines provide comfortable accommodations, specialty restaurants, and plenty to do on and off the ship.

There are two main things you need before booking a world cruise: plenty of time and some spare cash. Prices range from around $20,000 to upwards of $100,000 per person, and all our top picks are more than 100 days (one is even a whopping 275 days), so they're ideal for retired travelers looking for their next big adventure. Pack wisely for a range of destinations and climates, and get ready for the journey of a lifetime, filled with postcard-perfect destinations and new friends (because you're bound to meet a travel buddy or two after 100-plus days on a ship). If an around-the-world cruise is at the top of your travel list, you'll want to book sooner rather than later — these journeys frequently sell out because many cruise lines only offer a limited number of sailings.

Here are ten of the best around-the-world cruises you can take in 2023 and 2024.

Shorter cruises

A shorter cruise may be an attractive option if you don't have extensive vacation time or you prefer to spend a few days ashore before or after your sailing. Princess Cruises: 4-Day Alaska Sampler

This 2025 cruise aboard Discovery Princess includes one port of call, Ketchikan, and two days at sea between Vancouver and Seattle. This early season itinerary aboard Caribbean Princess calls on Sitka and Ketchikan, offering more time ashore to explore these two popular coastal towns along Alaska's Inside Passage. Guests will also have two sea days to enjoy activities and dining experiences on the ship.

How to find the best Alaska cruise deals

Book during wave season.

As previously mentioned, you can take advantage of some of the best deals of the year during wave season. Promotions offered during wave season include lower cruise fares, reduced deposits and onboard credits. You can also find special rates (or free fares) for the third and fourth guests in the same room, making this the perfect time to book a family cruise.

In addition, look for discounts on higher-level staterooms and suites, or even accommodations in exclusive areas of the ship, such as The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line or The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises. These private spaces offer swanky extras like luxurious accommodations, all-inclusive pricing , butler service, a team of attendants and concierge service, as well as private restaurants, lounges and pools. With lower pricing, wave season may be the best time to splurge on a cruise vacation in one of these upscale enclaves.

Promotional pricing beyond wave season

If you miss booking your cruise during wave season, don't panic. Many lines offer special pricing and flash sales throughout the year and advertise lower fares for voyages during Alaska's shoulder seasons, which fall in May and September.

"You will always find the more affordable Alaska cruises toward the beginning and end of the season. This year, the Alaska cruise season begins in April and continues through October," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic. She adds, "The challenge with shoulder season Alaska cruises is that the weather might not be the best – it can snow in Alaska in April and early May – and in the fall, the nights will be longer (although, there is a chance you might see northern lights )."

In addition to giving up the warmer summer weather (and possibly having snow), you may also miss some optimal wildlife viewing opportunities if you cruise early or late in the season. For example, the peak time for bear-watching excursions extends from mid-June to mid-August, which falls during the height of the Alaska cruise season in July and August.

If you're looking for other ways to save money on your cruise, Gray Faust advises that older ships also provide more value when you're looking for deals.

It's important to note that a few of this year's wave deals extend just until the end of February 2024, so you'll need to refer to the individual cruise line websites to see the exact dates for the special offers. You may also be able to find lower prices on some discount and aggregator sites, like Cruise Critic, Cruises.com and Priceline.

What You Need to Know - Costs of a Cruise Ship Ticket (2024)

W ith all of the new cruise ships (and even some cruise lines!) over the past two years, you may be considering a cruise. Taking a cruise can be an effective and affordable way to see multiple destinations – you will travel to different ports of call as you stay in one room with no need to unpack.

However, many travelers are worried about the costs of a cruise ship ticket. They may seem to be expensive. Luckily, many cruise lines and sailings are very affordable. Because most (but definitely not all) of the costs are included, they can be an easy thing to budget for as well.

So, how much does a cruise ship ticket cost? This post will help you understand cruise prices on some of the most popular, mainstream cruise lines, as well as what affects the price of a cruise. There are also some optional add-ons that can add to the expense (as well as the fun!). For instance, a Virgin Voyages cruise fare includes WiFi, gratuities, and dining at any of the specialty restaurants at no additional cost.

Typically, the base cruise fare includes things like your stateroom, meals (in the buffet, main dining room, and other included venues), government taxes, port fees, and most activities on board the ship.

Note that we are only looking at mainstream lines, not luxury cruise lines. Prices and inclusions are always subject to change.

How Much Does a Cruise Ship Ticket Cost?

What affects the price of a cruise.

There are so many factors that go into the price of a cruise. First, you’ll want to decide which cruise line you want to sail on. There are many benefits to each line If you don’t have one in mind, you should do some research in advance to find out what activities, amenities, itineraries, and general atmosphere are on the cruise lines you are considering.

The cruise line that you sail on is probably the biggest driver of cost. Some are most expensive than others. However, the inclusions may be different, so look at the add-ons in addition to the base cost to really get a good idea of what you’ll be spending.

The itinerary that you are sailing on is another major price driver. This includes the ports of call that you’ll be visiting and the number of days of your sailing. In general, if you want to save some money on your cruise vacation, one easy option is to decrease the length of the cruise.

The type of stateroom that you choose will also affect the price. Expect to pay more for suites and balcony staterooms. The most cost-effective option of the cabin types is typically an interior stateroom.

Some cruise lines may offer you the opportunity to bid on a higher-level stateroom. It can be a great way to try for a suite or other concierge room that may have otherwise been out of your price range. To maximize your chances of getting the bid accepted, however, you’ll want to follow the cruise line’s recommendations. That won’t necessarily give you the best deal though.

Another option to save money on your stateroom is to book a GTY stateroom (guaranteed). In this case, you’ll book your room without knowing the exact category or location. You are guaranteed a minimum category and can save money with this option.

Add-ons To Your Cruise Price

It’s also important to understand what things can add to the cost of your sailing. Some of these are entirely optional, while others really aren’t. Be sure to have an idea of these costs so you can budget for them accurately.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is optional, but it is a good idea, especially for an expensive trip. This is an extra charge, and you can usually either purchase it on your own or through your cruise line. Check around for coverages and don’t just automatically go for the lowest price. Often, the cruise insurance won’t include coverage for flights purchased on your own.

Port Transportation

Whether you are driving or flying, you’ll either need to park at the port or get there somehow. Some cruise lines will offer an option airport shuttle to the cruise port, but you’ll typically have to pay extra. In some cases, this will be the cheapest option, but that’s not always the case. Regardless of what you choose, you’ll need to include this cost in your vacation budget

Drinks packages or individual alcoholic drinks

Alcoholic beverages are not included with the cost of your cruise unless you’ve purchased an unlimited beverage package. Some cruise lines, like Disney Cruise Line, include soda, but others charge extra for some non-alcoholic drinks. It’s up to you to decide whether a package is worth it but plan on spending some money for drinks if you plan to have any soft drinks, specialty coffees, or alcohol during your cruise.

Not all cruise lines offer unlimited beverage packages. Disney offers a beer or wine package, and Virgin Voyages offers a “bar tab”. Regardless, these can be the best deal if you will take advantage of them.

Shore excursions

Every port of call will have some fun shore excursions that you can consider booking. Cruise lines offer these, or some guests choose to book them independently. Just remember that if you book on your own, it’s entirely your responsibility to make sure you get back to the ship on time.

Shore excursions vary in price, depending on the activity. Some, like a helicopter ride, can be quite expensive, while others, like sightseeing tours, are more affordable. European and Alaskan excursions can be costly, so you’ll want to research before booking so you aren’t surprised.

Spa treatments

Spa services on a cruise ship can be a wonderful splurge and luxury. These are not included in the cost of your cruise ship ticket, so if you do plan to visit the onboard spa or salon, be sure to understand the costs before committing.

Specialty restaurants

While most of the main dining rooms on cruise ships offer excellent food and service, sometimes it’s nice to visit some of the specialty restaurants on board. These often come with an upcharge, although they are complimentary on Virgin Voyages where there is no main dining room. Some cruise lines may have a package where you can prepurchase from one to unlimited signature dining.

Gratuities are typically an additional charge on top of your cruise fare. Usually, you’ll tip individually when purchasing beverages or for room service. Then, you can leave a bigger tip for your server team and stateroom host.

Some cruise lines allow you to prepay your gratuities, which can definitely make things easier to budget. You can always add on at the end for excellent service. Virgin Voyages includes gratuities in the total price, so you don’t have to worry about them unless you’d like to add on.

Cruising can be a great way to unplug and relax. However, sometimes you do need internet access to stay in touch with the real world. While WiFi at sea isn’t always great, it definitely has improved over the years. You can sometimes purchase a full cruise package and a daily package, which is a great option if you don’t need it for the entire sailing.
