EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF MICHIGAN ON A RZR!

Staff is very friendly, everything is explained well. They took time explaining the trails, local regulations, and answering all our questions on the local spots. Super nice facility and machines with ride command, backup camera, and Bluetooth speakers. We look forward to renting again!

Pay no attention to the negative reviews. This place is awesome. We rented a 4 seater and everything went smooth(not the trails, lol) and professional. Couldn't be happier with our experience. Thank you to the crew for being open on Sundays.

Had a great experience, would highly recommend! We did a 4-hour rental which was plenty of time for us. There are 250+ miles of trails nearby, would recommend taking their suggestion to plan our route in advance.

Customer service is remarkable, some very genuine and understanding people there. Love that they’re family friendly being that I have kids of my own. 10/10 recommend if you’re looking for a great time!

What an exceptional experience! The equipment (Ranger 4 seat) was clean and well maintained. The Ride Command was awesome. The staff could not have been any more kind and helpful. Their attention to safety and training was reassuring and well done. Picking up the rental was smooth and quick as well as drop off. We totally enjoyed the whole experience and will be a repeat customer.

The Upper Peninsula boasts a rich heritage influenced by Native American traditions and European settlers. 6. What should I bring on my UTV adventure? When venturing into the great outdoors on a UTV, it’s essential to be well-prepared. Are you ready to embark on an exhilarating off-road adventure in Michigan’s breathtaking Upper Peninsula? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Before hitting the trails and immersing yourself in the wild beauty of this rugged terrain, it is crucial to ensure that you are properly equipped with the essential gear. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of planning your adventure, ensuring a safe and awe-inspiring journey.

1. Safety First: Helmets and Protective Gear When it comes to off-roading adventures, safety should always be your utmost priority. Investing in high-quality helmets and protective gear is not merely a suggestion but rather an absolute necessity. A sturdy helmet will protect your head from potential accidents or falls, while reliable knee pads and elbow guards shield vulnerable joints from harm. With safety equipment firmly in place, you can confidently conquer even the most challenging trails without compromising your well-being.

2. GPS Navigation Systems: Stay on Track The vast wilderness of Upper Peninsula may be alluringly vast, but navigating its winding trails can be a daunting task without proper guidance. Equip yourself with a trustworthy GPS navigation system specifically designed for off-road adventuring. These systems offer detailed maps tailored to UTV drivers’ needs, allowing you to explore uncharted territories while never losing track of your location.

3. Recovery Kit: Prepare for Emergencies Adventures often come with unexpected twists and turns; being prepared for any situation is what sets apart seasoned explorers from novices. Invest in a comprehensive recovery kit that includes essentials like tow straps, winches, snatch blocks, and shovels. These tools will prove invaluable in case your vehicle gets stuck or requires assistance during particularly treacherous terrains.

4. Communications Devices: Stay Connected While venturing into remote regions filled with stunning natural beauty might sound like the ideal escape from modern connectivity, it is always wise to stay connected. Communication devices such as two-way radios or satellite phones serve as lifelines during emergencies or when seeking assistance. They also allow you to remain in contact with your fellow adventure seekers, ensuring a safe and coordinated journey.

5. Portable Air Compressor: Inflate with Ease The rugged trails of Upper Peninsula UTV trails can take a toll on your tires. To avoid potential incidents caused by underinflated tires, investing in a portable air compressor is essential. With this convenient tool at your disposal, you can easily inflate and deflate your vehicle’s tires to match different terrains, ensuring optimum performance and reducing the risk of encountering unnecessary mishaps.

WHERE TO RIDE: MICHIGAN

— great places to take your utv —.

Story & photos by Mike Bennett

T he world is a book, and those who do not travel only read one page. This story actually starts out 30 years ago when, as a teenage boy, I read an article in a magazine featuring the sand dunes of Silver Lake, Michigan. In the days before the World Wide Web, printed stories and word of mouth were how we found out about new places to ride. The pictures were stunning, and it was certainly different from the terrain I was used to riding in Ontario, Canada. I made a promise to myself that one way or another I was going to experience those 2000 acres of sand on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan.

I finally did make the trek to Silver Lake with my family in 2010, wheeling our lifted Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. We had an amazing time exploring the dunes—but at a slower pace than I would have when I was in my teens piloting a Quadracer 250. We loved the town. We filled our week camping, playing on the beach, swimming, boating, exploring historic lighthouses and spending some part of every day in the dunes.

We enjoyed the area so much that we all agreed we wanted to go back someday. Although, this desire to return to Silver Lake produced a bit of a conundrum for our family. We pride ourselves on never vacationing in the same place twice.   Life is short, and we want to see and experience new things every year, so while this desire existed, we carried on with new adventures.

That all changed in January 2018 when the Michigan Department of Natural Resources opened 6300 miles of state forest roads to ORV users. Permit information and trail maps can be found on the Michigan Department of Natural Resources website ( www.michigan.gov/dnr).

This new development meant we could visit the dunes again and also explore the beauty of the excellent trail network of the northern Lower Peninsula.

We immediately began planning a two-week motorsports adventure. We selected four areas of interest within the Lower Peninsula, allowing us to balance off-road days with side trips and historical exploration, taking in all that Michigan has to offer. Follow along and see why Michigan is on its way to becoming a world-class destination for off-roading families!

SILVER LAKE SAND DUNES STATE PARK (43.40.21 N 86.30.53 W)

Silver Lake is located along the shores of Lake Michigan, nestled between Muskegon and Ludington. The town is home to Silver Lake State Park, which features 2000 acres of sand dunes and the protected waters. In addition to riding the dunes, families can keep busy jet skiing, boating, renting go-karts, playing mini golf, sand boarding, zip lining, fishing and camping.

Accommodation options include hotels, cottage rentals and several campgrounds all within a short drive to the dunes.

Remember, the roads are not open to OHVs, so be prepared to trailer your equipment to the dunes daily.

ALANSON (45.26.39 N 84.47.12 W)

The Village of Alanson is situated on the banks of the Crooked River, a major link in the inland Waterway of northern Michigan. The village is also in the heart of ATV country, with several trailheads within a 30-minute drive. We stayed at Staffords’s Crooked River Lodge ( www.staffords.com/crooked-river-lodge/ ) just outside of town and enjoyed all of the amenities, including the large trailer-friendly parking lot.

Dave Jabrish and his website ( www.fishweb.com ) are a must-visit before planning any off-road trip to Michigan. We hooked up with Dave and some friends for a day on the Indian River OHV Route. Local knowledge is hard to beat, and these fine folks made sure we didn’t miss a thing along the way. A non-riding highlight of our vacation was our day on the water with Plumber’s Helper Charter Service in nearby Petoskey. Jim and Kim Mussleman pilot the largest charter vessel on Lake Michigan and have over 30 years experience on the waters in and around Little Traverse Bay.   We landed over 100 pounds of fish and experienced an amazing day of freshwater fishing. See www.bayharborfishing.com or call (231) 357-3413.

MACKINAC ISLAND (45.50.57 N 84.37.08 W)

We parked everything with an engine and spent two days on Mackinac Island, enjoying the quaint, historic ambiance of a pre-automotive era. Automobiles were banned here in 1898, and visiting the island is like taking a step back in time, as the only options for getting around are horse-drawn carriages, bicycles or on foot. Access to the island is by ferry, and we rode out and back on the high-speed Hydro-Jet with Star Line ( www.mackinacferry.com) . The main street is lined with hotels dating back to the 1850s, and the area is overlooked by Fort Mackinac, which was built by the British in 1780.   The fort played a role in the American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The imposing fort is in magnificent condition, and the views of the straights are amazing from its ramparts.

BROOKLYN (40.04.00 N 84.14.38 W)

If you are planning a motorsports vacation to Michigan, think about visiting in June or August, and take in a NASCAR event as part of your trip. Michigan International Speedway ( www.misspeedway.com ) is the circuit’s fastest track, with qualifying speeds in excess of 200 mph! We were invited by Can-Am to display the Guardian at this year’s Consumers Energy 400 and took in an amazing weekend of racing.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Sand Dunes in Michigan – Experience The Thrill Of Riding Them!

Last summer, I had the opportunity to ride dunes in Michigan at Silver Lake State Park. An activity that many of us do know is a “thing.” It is not just a thing. It is a “big thing” in states like Arizona. California, Colorado, and Michigan. Unknown to many, the western coastline of Lake Michigan boasts one of nature’s marvels – the most extensive collection of freshwater dunes in the world. Dunes offer a variety of tourist attractions, including riding the dunes.

So, what does riding dunes entail? Essentially, you ride jeeps, buggies, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), utility terrain vehicles (UTV’s), motorcycles, and sandrails.  Do not worry; I will cover the vehicles later! Riding dunes is an extreme sport that involves driving up, down, and across giant dunes and the rugged terrain accompanying them. And, for the brave, it also includes jumping these dunes and performing various stunts.

Think self-driven roller coaster meets Evel Knievel .

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our  disclosure and privacy policy  for more information.

Riding dunes is not for the faint of heart.  On the other hand, it is a ton of fun – even if you only spectate.

Fortunately for me, I came across the dunes in Michigan because a dear friend lives in Michigan, and her entire family rides the dunes. This summer, a couple of us made a point to hit Michigan.  Not only to visit with our friends but to experience riding the dunes in Michigan for ourselves.

And one of the sweetest things about riding dunes in Michigan is the scenery. Yes, the scenery!

Lake Michigan

You will be riding around Lake Michigan. If you are not familiar with Lake Michigan, here are a few facts:

  • The third-largest Great Lake by surface area and the sixth-largest freshwater lake in the world.
  • The surface area of 22,404 square miles is the second-largest of the Great Lakes by volume at 1,180 cubic miles.
  • The average depth is 279 feet, and its most remarkable depth is 923 feet.
  •  Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan share Lake Michigan from west to east.
  • Lake Michigan has many beaches and is considered the “Third Coast” of the United States.

I have experienced Lake Michigan from Chicago and Indiana. Sand dunning was my first opportunity to experience it from Michigan and see the beaches.

Who knew that Michigan had beautiful beaches like this? Michigan will surprise you with what it has to offer!

Lake Michigan Beach

History of Silver Lake State Park

In 1920 Carrie E. Mears, the daughter of lumber baron Charles Mears donated 25 acres on the east side to be a park. The Federal Government followed in 1926 by adding 900 acres to form “Sand Dunes State Park.” Mears donation and the government’s land merged in 1949, and new boundaries were dedicated in 1951.

History of Riding Sand Dunes

In the 1930’s Malcolm “Mac” Woods offered rides on a “dune scooter,” essentially a ten-wheeled Model A Ford converted with balloon tires. The tours were focused on providing thrill while stopping at scenic lookouts.

Later Woods added scooters and other vehicles to his Mac Woods Dune Scooter Rides business. Still open today and still operated by the family. The Wood family, by all accounts, started the trend at Silver Lake State Park.

How Were Silver Lake Sand Dunes Created?

The sand is made from quartz dumped by glaciers from  Canada . The wind blew the sand grains to form dunes as high as four-story buildings following the ice age.

There Are Four Main Types of Sand Dunes

  • Barchan – A barchan is a crescent-shaped dune.
  • Transverse – A long sandy dune with a wavy ridge running along the length.
  • Blowout – A sandy depression in a dune ecosystem caused by removing sediments by the wind.
  • Linear – Straight or slightly sinuous sand ridges are typically much longer than wide.

Then there is composite – a blend of linear and traverse dunes that accumulate up to 400 meters high.

I am not an expert on types of dunes, but from what I experienced. Silver Lake Sand has a combination of all.

Tours and Rentals at Silver Lake Sand Dunes

While there are many dunes in Michigan, the only ridable one is Silver Lake. Silver Lake State Park is the only dune east of the Mississippi River open to off-road vehicles.

As mentioned, you can ride your vehicle if you have one. If not, you can take a tour or rent a vehicle.

  • Mac Wood’s Dune Rides: This is a tamer experience, more of a dunes tour. Appropriate for kids, this option allows you to experience the dunes on a slower scenic ride.
  • Parrot’s Landing Jeep Rentals and Tours: You can rent jeeps and buggies here. You can either rent and go or take a tour you drive but follow a tour operator.

This is the tour we did, and I highly recommend it. This enables you to experience the full effects (minus dune jumping) with an expert.

  • Silver Lake Buggy Rentals: As the name implies, you can rent a buggy here, and off you go.

Vehicles for Riding the Sand Dunes in Michigan

While you will see people on the dunes in cars, it is not advisable. This said we saw plenty of people in cars which baffled me. And, while hundreds of experienced drivers take on the dunes, I seriously do not recommend that you head out there without taking a tour or lessons first.

Most of the vehicles fall into two categories All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and Utility terrain vehicles (UTV’s).

What is the Difference Between an ATV and a UTV?

All-terrain vehicles (ATV)

An all-terrain vehicle (ATV)is typically a quad or a four-wheeler for single riders, sometimes double riders. The more maneuverable and can handle tight turns and dense timber or brush with ease.

Popular ATV’s

  • Arctic Cat Alterra 300
  • Polaris Sportsman 450
  • Textron Alterra VLX 700
  • Honda Fourtax Foreman 4×4
  • Suzuki Kind Quad 750

Utility terrain vehicles (UTV)

A utility terrain vehicle (UTV) is an off-road vehicle that can seat between 2 and 4 people and is designed to handle rougher terrain and hauling. They are often called side-by-sides (SXS).

Utility Terrain Vehicles, or UTVs, are built and used more for work than recreation. They are large, powerful, able to seat passengers side by side, and made with lots of storage space.

Popular UTV’s

  • Polaris RZR XP
  • Honda Pioneer 1000
  • Can-Am Defender Mossy Oak Edition
  • Yamaha Wolverine
  • Kawasaki Mule Pro-FXT Ranch Edition

Sand buggy, dune buggy, and beach buggies are recreational motor vehicles with large wheels and wide tires designed for dunes, beaches, roads, or desert recreation.

Here We Are Riding The Sand Dunes In Michigan In A Jeep:

silver lake state park

A sand rail, or “sand crawler,” is a lightweight off-road motor vehicle specifically built for traveling in sandy terrain. Similar in some respects and often mistakenly referred to as a dune buggy or sand car, a sand rail is a different specialty vehicle.

I think it is safe to say that sand rails are all the rage, and these are big-ticket items. Many people go for custom sand rails!

Popular Sand Rails

Closing Thoughts

Before the  Pandemic , I traveled to Chicago at least once a month. Michigan is always advertised in Chicago as a vacation destination in the Midwest.

I understand why it is drivable, and there are four seasons of fun to be had, and I do not know why “The Great Nation of Michigan,” as my friends call it, is not as well known throughout the rest of America as a vacation destination.

Having been to Michigan twice. Both experiences were completely different yet wonderful. Riding dunes in Michigan is a  bucket list adrenaline, a sweat-worthy activity that almost anyone will enjoy. It is reason alone enough to visit Michigan.

I am going to Michigan again next year to explore more of the upper peninsula. It is safe to say that Michigan is becoming one of my favorite states!

4 shot at Stein Park in Detroit: 2 children, pregnant teen injured

side by side tours in michigan

A fight between two women at Stein Park on Wednesday night ended with four people shot, including two young children and a pregnant teenager, Detroit Police Chief James White said.

White said police responded to a ShotSpotter alert around 8:55 p.m. in the west-side area of Westfield Avenue and Faust Avenue where officers discovered the four victims: two teenage women, one of whom is pregnant and in critical condition. The other victims were two children ages 3 and 6 who were "just in the park enjoying a warm spring" and had nothing to do with the fight, he said.

The children are in stable condition.

One of the women involved in the fight "got the best" of the other woman she was fighting with and called a man who had a gun in his backpack, White said. He pulled up to the park, firing four shots at the victims.

Detroit police are searching for the shooter and the woman who they say called him to the park. White said he doesn't know at this time what led to the fight between the women.

"We have to keep our kids safe," White said. "A coward with a gun decided to bring it and hurt children. It's awful."

Dujuan "Zoe" Kennedy, an organizer with community violence intervention group Force Detroit, told the Free Press they responded to the scene and began outreach and de-escalation efforts Wednesday night.

“It’s a tragedy that this escalated to the point where children were shot. At no point is this acceptable to our community,” Kennedy said. “We are doing outreach to mitigate any retaliation or trauma. Community accountability, and guidance is what we aim to demonstrate at all times.”

This margarita kicks it up a notch on Ann Arbor’s west side

  • Published: May. 01, 2024, 10:30 a.m.

Carlyle Grill

The Blackberry Margarita served at the Carlyle Grill in Ann Arbor uses house made blackberry sour mix as a driver of flavor. Martin Slagter | The Ann Arbor News

ANN ARBOR, MI - Simple. Classic. From-scratch.

These are the words Head Bartender Kelsey Haag used to describe the fare and cocktails at the Carlyle Grill on Ann Arbor’s west side, where you can order the classics and still get a drink that will leave you pleasantly surprised.

Patrons shouldn’t confuse simple and classic as boring, Haag noted, pointing to one of Carlyle Grills’ most popular cocktails, the Blackberry Margarita, as evidence of its ability to accentuate the classics.

Central to the cocktail’s appeal is its from-scratch blackberry sour mix Haag concocts regularly by cooking down fresh blackberries, sugar, water and lemon juice for a couple of hours.

Substituting the blackberry sour mix for lime juice adds noticeable depth to the cocktail’s flavor, presenting a drink that is simple and balanced.

“It doesn’t leave you with that heartburn feeling after you drink it,” Haag said. “It really makes a difference having that fresh product.”

The Blackberry Margarita combines a 1.5 ounce pour of Patrón Silver, 0.5 ounce of Cointreau orange liqueur and 2 ounces of the blackberry sour mix. Sugar is added to the rim, while the drink is garnished with a lime and blackberry.

What’s noticeable beyond the blackberry finish is how the drink maintains all of the essential elements of what makes a margarita appealing in the first place: A citrus flavor profile that remains light and easy to drink.

Whether Carlyle Grill is turning out the classics or making the occasional tweak to its menu, its cocktails are nuanced and full of flavor, offering a wonderful spot to enjoy a drink this spring on Ann Arbor’s west side.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Has Size on Its Side but Lacks Charisma

It remains one of the most spacious three-row mid-size SUVs, but the Traverse still fails to stand out despite a new engine and more trim levels.

2024 chevrolet traverse

In keeping with its more rugged look, the Traverse lineup now includes a Z71 off-road trim for the first time. It joins the flood of available rugged-esque models such as the Kia Telluride X-Pro , Honda Pilot TrailSport , and numerous others. Standard equipment on the Z71 includes all-terrain tires, ZF frequency-based adaptive dampers, a twin-clutch all-wheel-drive system, and a 1.2-inch suspension lift. This isn't meant to be a rock-crawler, but it does have off-road-specific drive modes, underbody skid plates, and extra ground clearance for peace of mind if you frequently point your Traverse toward muddy two-tracks or gnarly gravel roads.

2024 chevrolet traverse

The sporty-looking RS model returns, and it too features the upgraded dampers but gets 22-inch wheels and blacked-out trim. Chevy also offers its Super Cruise hands-free driver-assist technology as standard equipment on the RS, which is the most expensive of the bunch with a starting price of $55,595. The more mainstream LS and LT trims, in the low-$40,000 range, target the heart of the three-row-SUV market, and the Traverse's core mission hasn't changed much despite its boxier styling. This remains a utilitarian family bus above all, and while its 204.5-inch length is within half a foot of a Tahoe's , the Traverse's unibody construction makes it a bit more maneuverable and carlike in its manners while also offering better fuel economy than its V-8-powered, truck-based big siblings.

New Turbo Four-Cylinder Engine

To that end, the Traverse's engine compartment is the one area that has embraced downsizing with this new generation. In place of the old 3.6-liter V-6 is a new turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four (there was a 2.0-liter turbo four offered during the previous-gen Traverse's run, but most models used the V-6). Related to the 2.7-liter turbo four found in GM's pickup trucks, this engine puts up big numbers—328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque—that outpace many others in this class. At the same time, the combined EPA estimate for front-wheel-drive models goes up to 23 mpg, from 21 mpg previously, and the all-wheel-drive model now gets 21 mpg combined, an increase of 1 mpg.

2024 chevrolet traverse

The Traverse's turbo four doesn't feel quite as strong as its output figure would suggest, and we think that's partially because of its sluggish throttle tip-in and the vehicle's stated curb weight of as high as nearly 4800 pounds, which puts it among the heavier entries in the three-row segment and about 200 pounds heavier than before. The engine sounds gruff under hard acceleration, and it sends plenty of noise into the cabin even during more sedate driving. Perhaps the Buick Enclave will feature additional sound-deadening material for better NVH isolation.

The Traverse corners well enough, with good body control, and it has the same firm and responsive brake pedal that has become a GM trademark across vehicle segments. But the slow steering makes it drive every bit as big as it is, causing it to seem as if Chevrolet purposely tuned this model to feel more like a Tahoe. We drove the Z71, which has slightly duller responses due to its chunkier tires, and the RS, which is a bit sharper thanks to its more aggressive wheel-and-tire package, but neither version was particularly engaging to drive.

Lots of Space Inside

The Traverse's interior plays more on space and versatility than it does on plush accommodations. The biggest upgrade from the old model is the new screen setup, which includes an 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster and a 17.7-inch central touchscreen. But the materials even in the higher-trim RS and Z71 models aren't particularly nice, and the dashboard design is uninspiring. But for people-hauling duty, there's plenty to recommend. The airy cabin offers good space in both the second and third rows. The third row also has a decent seating position, with a bottom cushion that doesn't force your knees into your chest in the same way many other three-row SUVs do. If you slide the second row forward, there's just enough legroom back there for adults.

2024 chevrolet traverse

Dimensionally, this latest Traverse is all but identical to last year's model—as before, there's also quite a lot of cargo space, even behind the third row, and a deep storage bin beneath the load floor. The third row folds flat to open up the space, although it won't fold if the available second-row captain's chairs are in their rearmost position. You have to slide them forward first for the third row to have enough clearance to fold, a slight annoyance that could bother those who raise and lower the third row frequently.

Space sells in this segment, and it remains the Traverse's chief calling card even as the new generation ushers in blockier styling, an off-road trim level, and new technology features. These new offerings don't move the needle much in terms of increasing the Traverse's desirability, and the new engine isn't as convincing of an upgrade as its numbers would suggest. The new Traverse still reads as a midpack player to us, but for those who use all three rows of seats or need as much cargo space as possible, Chevy's mid-sizer remains a pragmatic choice.

Former President Donald Trump talks about immigration, economy in Waukesha: recap of Wednesday's rally

Former President Donald Trump was in Waukesha Wednesday for his second rally of the presidential campaign in Wisconsin, speaking at the Waukesha County Expo Center.

Trump's visit comes off the heels of the latest Marquette University Law School poll, which showed him with a two-percentage point lead over President Joe Biden, well within the margin of error. Wisconsin is one of just a handful of contested states that will  decide the next presidential election .

Trump was last in Wisconsin on April 2, when he held a rally in Green Bay . The Waukesha rally is Trump's first campaign event since the start of his hush money trial in Manhattan.

Here's a recap of the day's events:

Immigration, economy major focus of Trump's speech

Similar to his rally in Green Bay, Trump used his speech to criticize Biden on his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border, calling it "the worst border in the history of the world."

"Biden came in and unleashed mayhem on our economy, just like he unleashed mayhem on our border," Trump said. "They have people flowing in from the poorest and the heaviest-crime countries all over the world."

In the latest Marquette University Law School poll , Wisconsin voters considered Trump better than Biden at handling immigration and border security, plus the economy, Israel-Hamas war and foreign relations. Biden had the lead on health care, abortion policy and Medicare and Social Security.

Voters overall ranked the economy as their top issue, with 33% saying it would be most important for deciding who to vote for. Immigration and border security was the second, with 21% citing that issue.

Democrats focus on abortion policy in response

In response to Trump's visit, Democrats focused on abortion access, a key message that they've delivered at Biden campaign events.

"Trump’s abortion bans are wreaking havoc across the country — something he called “incredible” today — and he’s fine with it. Because it’s all about him, not Wisconsin, and not America," said Brianna Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Biden-Harris campaign in Wisconsin.

"As president, Donald Trump delivered less jobs and paved the way for extreme abortion bans across America. His next term could be worse: more bans, more suffering, and higher costs."

Trump briefly addressed abortion in his speech, repeating his position that abortion is best left up to the states. In an interview before his remarks, he declined to weigh in on whether the state Supreme Court should uphold a lower court's ruling restoring abortion access in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin chairman of Republican Party will continue promoting early voting

Republican Party of Wisconsin chairman Brian Schimming told reporters he will continue promoting early voting.

“The Republican National Committee will continue to do that, and so will the president,” Schimming said.

Trump has sent mixed messages on early voting, but has recently shifted his tone. Following the 2020 election, Trump sought to throw out ballots cast in-person absentee in Milwaukee and Dane counties.

Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow also asked the crowd to vote early.

“We are going to get hammered by out-of-state money," Farrow said. "They’re going to flood every single election that we have. If we get out and vote early, that means our dollars can be targeted to those who haven’t voted yet.”

Staunch Trump ally Mike Lindell splits off over early voting stance

One of Trump’s staunchest allies Wednesday split from the former president on a key issue to the 2024 election cycle: early voting.

Mike Lindell, a pillow manufacturer and one of the most prominent purveyors of Trump’s false election claims, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he didn't support the former president’s recent about-face on absentee voting.

“I’m 100% against voting early. I always will be," Lindell said. "It’s harder for (Democrats) to cheat with same-day voting."

Trump has long encouraged supporters to abstain from voting absentee and sought to throw out all in-person absentee ballots cast in the two most populous Wisconsin counties during the 2020 election. But Republicans have persuaded Trump to change his stance on the voting option to encourage GOP voters to maximize their voting power.

Lindell, who was meeting with rally attendees Wednesday outside of the Waukesha County Expo Center, also promoted the recall of Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, who has become a target of Trump and his allies over his unwillingness to take steps to overturn Trump’s 2020 loss.

“Robin Vos has to go,” Lindell said. “Vos is the most toxic politician I’ve ever come across.”

Supporters begin filing into venue for Trump rally

Supporters are slowly beginning to filter in to the Waukesha County Expo Center, where Trump is set to take the stage at 2 p.m.

A large crowd waited outside the expo center long before doors opened, forming a line that snaked through part of the parking lot.

Vendors sell Trump merchandise outside rally

Steven Reid, 38, of Tennessee wound through the line of Trump supporters before the doors opened Wednesday trying to sell merchandise.

On his cart were hats, keychains, bracelets and more. He said many people already seemed to have hats, though.

“Sometimes they buy stuff and sometimes they don’t,” said Reid, who said he travels the country selling merchandise at Trump rallies.

Biden campaign slams Trump for 'harmful' working-class policies

Ahead of Trump’s visit to Waukesha, the Biden campaign slammed Trump for his backing of policies the Biden campaign characterizes as being harmful to “working people here in Wisconsin,” citing tax cuts for corporations and the nation’s wealthiest residents.

“Wisconsinites can’t continue to pay the price while Trump only looks out for himself and his rich donors,” Biden’s Wisconsin communications director Brianna Johnson said in a statement.

“Enough is enough. Wisconsinites are throwing their support behind President Biden because his focus is on empowering American workers. He oversaw the fastest rate of union growth in Wisconsin in the last 30 years, became the first sitting president to join a picket line, and just last week announced plans to put more money in workers’ pockets by getting them the overtime pay they deserve."

— Molly Beck

Milwaukee protest organizers denounce Trump visit

On the Southside of Milwaukee, organizers and supporters for Voces De La Frontera gathered as they had for nearly 20 years to march for immigrant rights. But Trump’s visit to Waukesha was not ignored by organizers.

“You are not welcome in Wisconsin,” said Christine Neumann Ortiz, executive director for Voces. “You are the real threat to democracy. You orchestrated a failed coup with your corrupt followers and white supremacists. and we reject your racist platform, that promises, dictatorship, military-style mass, deportation, and family separation.“

And while Trump’s visit gathered attention from organizers, so did the protest encampments at UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee. Students on those campuses and others around the country have been organizing demonstrations against their universities' involvement with the Israeli government and its action against Palestinians in Gaza.

Omar Flores, co-chair for the Coalition to March on the RNC, said the police response to the encampments 'will inform us of how they will treat us during the RNC.'

“The city of Milwaukee and nearby municipalities plan to roll out the red carpet for the Republicans and their hateful agenda, and the residents will do everything they can to reject hate in our communities,” Flores said.

But the Biden administration received some criticism from activists for its backing of Israel in its conflict with Palestinians.

“We see that the US government found $26 billion to finance Israel’s bombardment and destruction of Gaza over 30 hospitals and can’t find the funds to keep maternity wards here in Milwaukee open,” said Dr. Roa Qato, gynecologist and co-leader of the Milwaukee Chapter of Healthcare Workers for Palestine.

“We see families under Biden, and under Trump, struggling to make ends meet and to be able to pay for necessary medical supplies and medication.”

— Ricardo Torres

Crowd gets to Trump rally in Waukesha early

Bil Aldrich, 51, of DeForest pulled up to the rally before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in a truck flying a Trump 2020 flag that he said he keeps up even when he's not at an event.

He said he goes to every Trump rally he can, and this is his sixth since October 2020.

“They’re fun, great people,” he said. “Every stranger is a better friend than some of my closest family.”

He called Trump “honest to a fault” and said the criminal charges he's facing are “show trials.”

“They’re BS, but he’ll prevail one way or another, even if he ends up running the country from jail,” Aldrich said.

Trump under gag order about Stormy Daniels trial

Trump is taking advantage of a rare mid-week day out of a New York courtroom where he's on trial for allegedly paying off a porn star to be quiet about a past sexual relationship during his first campaign for president.

But Trump faces potential jail time if he again violates a gag order he's under as part of the court proceeding, making it unlikely he'll mention the case in Waukesha.

Trump was fined after he posted on his social media site Truth Social about potential witnesses in the case, including his former attorney, Michael Cohen, and the porn star at the center of the case, Stormy Daniels.

New York Judge Juan Merchan fined Trump $10,000 for the posts, which he deemed a violation of the gag order, and said Trump should be able to campaign freely and defend himself against political attacks but that he not willfully violate the court’s orders.

“If necessary and appropriate under the circumstances, (the court) will impose an incarceratory punishment,” Merchan wrote.

Where is Donald Trump speaking Wednesday?

Trump is holding his rally at the Waukesha County Expo Center, where he speak at around 2 p.m.

The same expo center was used in early March when first lady Jill Biden rallied a crowd of mostly women voters around abortion and health care.

In 2020 , Trump won Waukesha County with about 60% of the vote, compared to Biden's 39%. Margins of victory for Republican presidential candidates in the county have dropped from 35 points in 2012 to 27 in 2016 to 21 in 2020.

What will Donald Trump talk about in Wisconsin on Wednesday?

Trump will "contrast the peace, prosperity and security of his first term with Joe Biden’s failed presidency," his campaign said.

At his Green Bay rally, Trump tore into Biden over his administration's handling of immigration issues at the southern border. The Marquette poll showed Wisconsin voters see Trump better at handling immigration and border security.

Trump also promised to keep Social Security intact if reelected. In that same poll, voters said Biden would do a better job of handling Medicare and Social Security.

Trump also repeated false claims that he won the 2020 election in Wisconsin. Biden won Wisconsin by about 21,000 votes in 2020, a defeat that was key to Trump's reelection loss that year.
