Skrillex draws on a vast range of influences like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Autechre, IDM and acid house music – as well as video games like Final Fantasy and shows like Transformers.

From, 2004-2007, Moore found success singing for post-hardcore band From First to Last (signed to Epitaph). After a number of successful tours, Moore was forced to resign from the band due to issues with his vocal cords and subsequently began to focus on his solo career.

Skrillex released his debut EP, My Name is Skrillex, in 2010 as a free download, launching his reworked career. Soon following was the EP Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites, which garnered both top spots in the club music charts and three Grammy Awards, including for Best Dance/Electronica Album. If there was any doubt that this former vocalist could not transition into the EDM world, it was all dashed away with these successes.

Skrillex’s 2011 three-track EP, More Monsters and Sprites, helped kick off a successful tour. Moore also produced a track for Korn called “Get Up.” Later in that year, the band would join Skrillex on stage at Coachella. As if that year weren’t busy enough for Moore, he released yet another EP, Bangarang, that would ultimately bring home two more Grammy Awards in 2013. The record combines unrelenting, thumping kick drums with bass wobbles, chopped-up vocal hooks, catchy synth lines, and heavy drops.

Not content to just make music under the Skrillex name, Moore went on to form not one but two side projects in 2012. Dog Blood was a team up with Boys Noize, which featured the techno charts-topping track “Next Order.” Jack Ü was next up, this time pairing Skrillex with Diplo. For a while, this act kept its members a secret — another example of the masterful showmanship behind his projects.

In 2014, Skrillex promoted himself in a new way which reinforced his cutting-edge tech image with global fans. Using an app called “Alien Ride,” hidden messages and a countdown would boost anticipation for what would come next. The tracks revealed would comprise what would be his first full-length album release. Recess debuted at #4 on the US Billboard 200 charts and made it onto Rolling Stone’s top 50 records of 2014.

Since 2016, Skrillex has been racking up props with collaborations and remixes, amazing fans and peers alike. His impressive and eclectic mix of collaborators includes the likes of former girlfriend Ellie Goulding, Damien Marley, NERO, Deadmau5, A$AP Rocky, Chance the Rapper, Kill the Noise, and many more. He’s also dropped songs for video games, another one of his huge passions. Examples include "Face My Fears," an opening song for the video game Kingdom Hearts III.

Skrillex has toured with sold-out shows worldwide. Renowned for impressive set design, the “Mothership” tour is said to have required eight fully-loaded tractor-trailer trucks to transport its giant onstage spaceship. He has further built a reputation for his live shows and cleverly synchronized audio/visual displays. While touring slowed down due to the pandemic, he returned to form in 2021 with a performance in Brooklyn and with many more planned for the future.

Live reviews

Seeing Skrillex live is truly an electronic experience. It's not just his throbbing, undulating music that I love either – as he progresses through his set the stages behind him flashes in patterns that would make old-school Windows Media Player envious! Let me try and paint the picture for you...

The dark club pulses and writhes while multiple lighting types flash and move around obscuring Skrillex and seeming to seep into the walls. The signature cacophony of noise, visuals, and fog spill onto the floor, overtaking and enveloping us. As he moves from song to song Skrillex commands us to scream until our voices are hoarse and the music seems to thrum away the pain.

Hypnotic beats are flying from his station and enrapturing the club while Skrillex paces on top of his work space. Falling to his knees he drops the bass and the music screams “Skrillex.” His body hums with tension as he masterfully flips faders and switches and yells his instructions, encouragements, and demands at the crowd. I am transported to that place where music is all of my senses and I feel another wave of music breaking over me. Even Skrillex himself seems transported by the very music he has created. His body writhes along to the music making his adjustment movements seem frenzied and almost deformed.

Skrillex is a beast and his element is music.

Fantastic show. Skrillex really puts in the extra effort with his delivery - the 5 minute countdown before the curtain drop, as well as the special effect/fire/fog/lasers! Also very cool at the end when he took the time to meet and talk to some of his fans in the front row. Probably the best single act I've seen yet.

For some it is a story of baffling multiples. They struggle to comprehend how thousands of singles sold each day to the tens of thousands crushing into venues every week can be so easily dwarfed by the hundreds of thousands downloading, bootlegging, remixing and uploading for a content hungry global audience that devours petabytes of data while contributing billions of views and listens through platforms like YouTube.

Others stumble on the scale and speed of achievement. Perplexed that it is possible for an artist to go from gifting music online to receiving an ovation from his peer group just twenty-four months later as three Grammy Awards are placed in his hands. Some get hung up on the apparent ease and freedom of it all. Bewildered that someone can galvanize and ignite multiple genres of music with songs entirely written, recorded and mixed on a single laptop loaded with software and synths available to absolutely anyone with a credit card and internet connection.

But for Sonny Moore, someone you may know better as Skrillex, none of this troubles him greatly. The 24-year-old electronic imagineer focuses on little more than the story of community, creativity and commitment that has taken him from warehouse parties in Los Angeles to a defining role in the modern zeitgeist. “To be honest my vibe gets killed the most when I’m concentrating too much on what is around me and thinking too much about it all,” Moore states. “I have the most fun when I let my inhibitions check out, right at that point things just start to happen.”

It started to go well for Sonny when he filtered out the noise and distraction of his world as a solo artist and started mining the ephemeral moments he had been sharing with friends in clubs and parties across the city he calls home since his mid-teen years. The restless, urgent and kaleidoscopic sounds of EDM and bass music had spoken to him for the best part of a decade, one day he just started talking back. “Making music is the same as DJing,” he offers. “You continue along the path that leaves you most inspired. When you think too much you put limits on what is possible, the best parts are always instinctual rather than something too considered or planned out.”

Now with shimmering LED walls, 3D light shows, pyrotechnics and a relentless thirst to create live experiences of ever-increasing drama and spectacle, the challenge is to keep the fluidity and flexibility that hallmarked and aided his swift ascent. How is he doing it? By redefining the very nature of the phenomenon he now helms. “Skrillex is a band when it comes to performing live these days,” he admits. “Whatever room or arena we are in everyone is fully in the moment. My lighting and video guys are all working in real time while I’m onstage and the best compliment I get after a set is when someone asks about how I pre-program my set or use midi to get the audio/visual experience so tight. I love what we create because at any given moment everything could change. The people I have working with me are all so musical, we just create a vibe and feed off it along with everyone else in the club. It feels like a band jamming together most nights, but instead of the typical instruments we have lights, decks, LED, cryogenics and fire.”

Moore and his crew have taken Ableton project files and made multimedia art. Skrillex is fast becoming a form of hyper-digital jazz that values the improvised and unknown while creating electronic storms of devastating force and almost unimaginable size. “On our side of the show we have walls of lights and visuals, computers, software, hardware and firmware but that’s just the beginning. The entire crowd is playing a part with all the cameras, cell phones and social networks,” Moore laughs. “I wonder what all the data in the room even looks like when we are all firing.”

“I’m always chasing that moment when you actually feel time stop,” he continues. “Every now and then you get a second where it feels possible to step outside your own head and see what everyone else is experiencing. It usually happens to me in the most intense visceral moments when I’m playing to 40,000 people in the open air or in a tiny club where the walls are sweating, it’s crazy but I love it.” And that’s the key, loving but not over-thinking the madness that surrounds. Not dwelling on the numbers and riding, rather than watching, the swelling wave that is driving you forward. “It feels like being on a rollercoaster right now,” Moore confesses. “It’s exhilarating as it builds and builds and builds. When your stomach rises up into your throat I think all you can really do is smile. That’s my plan anyway.”

About skrillex.

birthday

World renowned DJ and music producer Skrillex was born Sonny John Moore on January 15, 1988, in Los Angeles, California. Moore attended a private academy for the arts in Los Angeles, yet he dropped out when he was 16, and from there began to check out the local electronic music scene. He later became the lead singer of the Georgia band From First to Last, and in 2004 through Epitaph Records, they released their album Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count, which was followed by the album Heroine in 2006. Shortly after, Moore left the band in pursuit of a solo career. After touring with Monster in the Machine and Strata, Moore had the opportunity to go on the second annual AP Tour along with names such as All Time Low , Forever the Sickest Kids, The Rocket Summer, and others in 2008. The next year, he released Gypsyhook EP, was featured as the opening act in Europe for Chiodos, and appeared at Bamboozle in California.

He adopted the name Skrillex in 2008, and two years later released an EP under his new name, appropriately entitled My Name is Skrillex. He later toured with Deadmau5 , and would go on to release Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites in 2010, More Monsters and Sprites and Bangarang in 2011, Make It Bun Dem After Hours in 2012, Leaving in 2013, and Recess in 2014.

It's Friday afternoon during SXSW, and Skrillex is DJing in his own hotel room. Around 10 people-- friends, publicists, managers-- casually mill around the spacious suite, which boasts a sizable balcony overlooking the corner of Brazos and 6th Streets. Soon, that slab of pavement will be overrun by a throbbing mass of well-inebriated humanity. For now, though, it's calm.

Back inside the suite, Skrillex, aka 24-year-old Californian Sonny Moore, is nothing but a genial host. He's giving hugs, offering refreshments, and generally shooting the shit with his assembled crew, most of whom he's known for years. Perched on the room's fancy-legged writing desk is a set of Pioneer CDJs, which Moore will return to compulsively during my hour-long visit. "Sorry, I have ADD," he says at one point after zoning out on the spinning circles, twinkling lights, and fast faders in front of him. He's not being rude. He just can't help himself. "Do you DJ?" he asks me. "I don't." "Oh, it's easy, man."

It's this inclusionary, non-stop attitude that helped Moore become one of the biggest DJs in the world. He played more than 300 shows around the world last year, ranging from packed basement parties to seizure-inducing festival-headliner sets, and in turn became the face of today's explosion of hard-charging American dance music. And with such popularity comes increased attention, and it hasn't all been positive. For various reasons-- his asymmetrical hair, past history as the leader of screamo act From First to Last, collaborations with Korn and what's left of the Doors, not-so-nuanced attitude toward sound and vision-- Moore has faced down a torrent of scorn, much of it purely superficial.

"It's a shame, people are like, 'Oh, I heard about him, he’s the crazy dubstep guy,' and they listen expecting that," he says. "If anything, I just want people to actually have their own opinions about me."

Because these tangental qualities are so upfront, it can be easy to dismiss Moore as a caricature of the dubstep auteurs whose 12"s are celebrated as a more cerebral alternative to his purely visceral style. But in the past year, Moore has become increasingly adept at translating the lurching dynamics of loud-quiet- loud rock music into shrapnel-spitting rave anthems, frantically oscillating between bits of melodic filigree and his signature earth-cracking bass drops. Like Justice before him, Moore's music is so brash that polarization is all but inevitable. But when his sub-bass hits a packed venue, like a slow-motion wrecking ball to the gut, it triggers a staggering, quick-hit dance euphoria.

In person, he's excitable, friendly. We retire to the suite's bedroom to chat; Moore, in all black, folds his Samba-clad feet beneath him on the bed, like a teenager might.

"For me, DJing is the least egotistical thing. It's just like: 'What do you want to listen to?' It's not something you can capture on the Grammys."

Pitchfork: You wrote on Facebook that Aphex Twin 's electro-ballad "Flim" is your favorite song ever, and I've also read that you like Burial a lot, too. That's a little surprising since most of your music is a lot bigger and louder and harder.

Sonny Moore: I listen to all types of music, and I have a lot of music that's moodier than anything you've heard me do. If you see different sets, it's always different songs. And as far as kids saying "Where does it drop?" when I posted the Aphex Twin song on Facebook... I wouldn't say it's appalling, but it is weird to me. There are a couple things you have to realize. One: The people commenting on Facebook have opinions that are really loud and, a lot of times, those opinions are considered more than they need to be. There's a broader general audience. But the really opinionated people always want to defend or offend: "Fuck you, it's the fucking Aphex! Skrillex should never..." Then there's the other guy that's like, "Dude! There's no drops!" But I know every break and hit to "Flim" verbatim; I've listened to it more than any other song in my whole life. I first found out about Aphex in San Francisco when I was 11 or 12. Korn was on MTV playing their favorite videos, and [Korn guitarist] Munky picked "Come to Daddy" . So I saved up my money and got the Come to Daddy EP.

Pitchfork: How soon after that did you begin making your own electronic music?

SM: I was 14 when I started Fruity Loops . I have this old tower in storage, the computer crashed but the discs are still there. One day, I wanna try to [retrieve the files] 'cause I have so many songs from Fruity Loops, man. Just really weird deep techno/mellow acid-- like no real genre, just making things. At that time, I was listening to all the Warp Records stuff. Aphex Twin and Squarepusher were just these bearded bedroom geeks, and that was cool to me! Around 16, I started going to warehouse parties in L.A. and DJing. I'd play that stuff, and no one [danced]. I didn't get it. I was like, "Dude! It's so much more complex! Listen to what's going on!" But that's what made me realize it's not necessarily about complexity. Everything has its purpose, though.

I actually hung out with [Aphex Twin] at Future Music Festival. People ask him to play [live], but he doesn't get off on playing, he just likes to make music for himself.

Pitchfork: What was it like meeting him?

SM: Well, the first time we met was when I played Lowlands Festival last year near Amsterdam. It was him and then me right after on the same stage. He had this full laser show, and I watched the whole thing in the front of the house. I'd always hear about him never playing songs anyone knows-- just doing white noise for two hours or whatever-- but halfway through his set, he started bringing out tracks from The Richard D. James Album and I Care Because You Do , even some old Caustic Window stuff. Just going for it. He played "Pigeon Street" , which is like a really short song that just goes, [ sings ] "doo-doo-doo, meow-meow-meow-meow." It's the weirdest song. [ laughs ] But you could tell he was actually trying to please the crowd. Anyway, after my set, I walked offstage and saw him sitting down with a beer. I'm like, "Fuck, if there was any time to just say hi..." So I go up to him: "Hey, I just wanted to say you had a great show." He doesn't even look at me and then walks off. My heart breaks.

After that, we were heading to Australia for the Future Music Festival and, the first day I'm there, I feel this arm on me. I turn around and it's Richard. He's like, "Hey man, good to see you!" He was so nice. He told me he had gotten in a little bit of an argument with his tour manager the day I went up to him. Anyway, we hung out and it was really awesome.

Pitchfork: Were you surprised when Skrillex really started taking off?

SM: Well, I don't want to sound overly humble because that's almost egotistical in its own right, but I feel like I'm not trying to do anything. I'm just existing and making the music I want to make. To see all this stuff happen is a crazy fuckin' thing. From First to Last got a big [label] deal, but I left that band because it wasn't the music I wanted to do. I was just making electronic music for fun after that. I hit a point in my life where I was cool with being broke and having a real cheap apartment.

Also, I didn't want to be a guy that's [in the spotlight]. So it's funny to see that happen again now. I don't want to be that. I'm just making music and hanging out with my friends and, if we're gonna do a show, we can make it special and bring robots out or something. It's a platform to do crazy, fun shit.

At the same time, we have different productions. We did five shows in New York recently, and most of them were just me DJing, and that's more about the vibe. We did this underground basement party where it was late and I played a lot deeper and a lot longer-- those are my favorite shows to do, anyway.

Pitchfork: What did you think about the Grammy performance with Foo Fighters and Deadmau5 this year -- it seemed to me like they just brought in a rock band to "legitimize" electronic music.

SM: They actually asked us to be on that as well. And, all due respect to all those artists, but that's not what I do. I don't play on TV. My performances are different because you're captivated more by everything around you rather than just staring at something. And I try to cater to the venue. If I'm on a rooftop where girls are on the tables dancing, I'm gonna play something to fit that. It's always a different experience. That's the purpose. For me, as much as it feels like there's ego involved with anyone who's up there on a stage, DJing is the least egotistical thing. It's not even about me-- it's about the vibe and the people hanging out and having drinks. Like: "What do you want to listen to?" It's not something you can capture on the Grammys.

Pitchfork: I noticed almost all of the songs you put out last year are up on your official YouTube page , which is unique, especially for a major-label artist.

SM: I've been in a major label deal for the last four years for a project that wasn't even Skrillex; I did Skrillex on the side and, since we're in a deal, it formulated around that. But we're not really using the major label as a major label, it's more for the administrative stuff. We do everything in our own team. Every one of the 300-something shows we've done over the last year, all those deals have gone transparently through us. At the end of the day, everything goes through me. It's very hands on. It's all our vision. That's what I'm really proud of. They're all my friends. My tour manager is 25. Him and I have been touring together since I was 17, I found him when he was a runner in a venue in North Carolina-- he took me to get deodorant one day when I was in my old band, and we've been best friends ever since.

I've been touring for eight years now. When you live long enough and you step outside the routine of things, you just realize that you gotta be happy and honest to yourself. That's all. Do things that make you happy. I don't need anything to live, I don't need this hotel room. I don't buy anything excessively, I don't even spend money. It doesn't matter. I just want to be happy. That's cool to me.

Every decision I make, I want to feel honest about. I'm not chasing opportunity. I don't wanna do something for money if I'm not interested in it. Not to say a phone company or whatever is bad, but I'm not excited about it. That's not what I do.

Pitchfork: You've released EPs and remixes, but does the idea of putting out a proper album matter to you?

SM: Yeah, I wanna put out an album. It's weird because coming into this, there was never any pressure to make an album. It was more like, "I have this song, or this EP, and we'll just put it out for free." Deadmau5 heard my shit on a blog and wants to put us out? OK, cool, sure. We just took it case by case. A lot of DJs can put out a single a year, and have a career that way, and play clubs all over the world. We put out 20-something tracks last year across the EPs and remixes. But, if I want to be conceptual and the time is right, I can make an album that's like: Here's my sound. Because I have some new shit that's way different than what I've done that still could rock a party. I'm not saying I'm trying to change shit, but making this new music got me re-inspired.

I got a lot of reggae-infused shit. Still a lot of dubstep, but kind of going back to the roots of dub. It's not as banging, but it is banging, if that makes sense. It's like when you hear, [ sings ] "This is how we do it." It's not as cheesy as that, but it makes you want to dance for sure. It's my funkiest stuff yet, but I'm not trying to be weird and funky now, or something. I got a lot of stuff, man. I could play you some shit. I have this kinda weird, kinda more techno... let me play you some...

[ We move into the living room, where Moore cues up a snarling, death-disco track and starts messing around with it. The drop-less instrumental sounds like  Daft Punk's "Rollin' & Scratchin'" as remixed by Trent Reznor . "Fun," he says, after playing the track for about 10 minutes, "I could just forget about everything and do that for hours." ]

Pitchfork: That definitely sounded a bit different than your other stuff.

SM: I like making fucking fun music that I like. The last thing I ever want is to have other people's opinions change how I want to make music. That's the scary thing. I'll be honest, it's not fucking easy. I try to avoid seeing what people say about me. People come up to me and say, "Man, so many people hate on you, just do your thing." And I'm "OK, man, don't fucking tell me about it anymore." I'll fail, to myself at least, if I let that get the best of me and try to be something that isn't me. I'm not trying to please anybody. That's what I did before, in bands and stuff.

Pitchfork: Do you have any theories about why you've been singled out as somebody that people hate?

SM: If you try to understand, that's diving in and reading what people say about you, and you can't do that because, fuck man, it's strange. It causes a stigma. For a long time, I was so oblivious to it because I play these shows and everyone's having a great time. I remember doing my first big Skrillex interview, where I talked with the writer for hours. We touched on everything. And then they chopped it down to a one-minute thing with the headline: "Skrillex Talks Back to the Haters" and it got like a million views. They made it look like I was just defending myself the whole time. It's strange because, before someone has a chance to have their own opinion about you, they already have an opinion about you. That's the thing about press and media, it's out of your control.

It's a shame. People are like, "Oh, I heard about him, he's the crazy dubstep guy," and they listen expecting that. But if you take a step back from the different connotations and you observe things for what they are... there are a lot of artists that might be misunderstood. If anything, I just want people to actually have their own opinions about me. I don't care if people hate me. I mean, I get it. When you were young, you were like, "The Backstreet Boys are gay!" And kids are on computers now. I'll post something on Facebook, and then, within two seconds, there are comments: "Fuck you dude... you suck... pussy... bitch... faggot... you ruined dubstep... emo." But if you look at their profiles, they're so young. To everyone else on the street, there's this really elitist, big group of haters everywhere. But fine. No offense to young kids.

To me, it's all about making music and playing shows. I think it's healthy to talk about why something is better or worse, but everything's connected with that, too. Like, I see someone take a photo of me and they [start typing on their cellphone] and they're putting it on Twitter and Facebook, and it's tagged "Skrillex," and now there are more people talking about me right away. It creates this discussion about so many things, but I guess that's just how it is.

Pitchfork: To me, what you're doing isn't all that different than something like Justice, and I remember a lot of hardcore dance music fans thought that sounded like shit when it came out.

SM: It's funny you say that because one of the parts of my Grammy speeches that wasn't put on YouTube was when I said [Justice's] Cross should have won a Grammy. That is a fucking perfect album. I'm afraid to step up to that because that's a real album. You can play those songs out and you can listen to the whole thing through on your own. They did something completely different. I mean, I was ripping off the French guys on My Name is Skrillex before I was doing dubstep anyway.

I remember seeing the full Daft Punk pyramid show in 2007. I went alone, drove up in my Honda Fit, bought a ticket off a scalper for $150, got on the floor, and had the best time of my life. I didn't have a drink, no drugs. But I was high out of my mind. It changed my life. This is gonna sound really lame , but try to take it the right way: There have been a couple times where I've been so proud of what I've done live, like I feel like I've given someone the same kind of feeling I got at that Daft Punk show. And that feels so good.

So I had just stood with 15,000 people watching Daft Punk, and then Justice became this thing, and then I'm going to Dim Mak Tuesdays in Cinespace and getting $75 to play these parties. Even at that point, I thought EDM was already blown up. Around that time, in my heart, I was just like, "Man, I wish I could make my own music. I don't need to be Daft Punk, but like..." I loved how they would throw on some suits, make a big production, and come out. Daft Punk are mysterious, but they're not trying to be mysterious. Have you seen that funny video interview they did? It's amazing. They're in their full suits in the studio, and they're like, "Our brains are engineered into the system." They're poking fun at the whole robot thing:

Pitchfork: I also read that you worked with Kanye West , who's a pretty big Daft Punk fan, too. What happened there?

SM: Well, basically we had a show on the same night in Vegas and he invited me to hang with him. We just worked on beats in his hotel room. He had something that he needed some advice on, but we just kind of hung out. It's cool to meet people, man. I don't expect anything; it's the opposite of jaded, but it's a similar feeling, in a sense.

I've been able to meet so many people that I admire, like I just brought SebastiAn out on a couple dates in Europe. It's cool when you see someone who you think would be pretentious, like Mr. Oizo or SebastiAn, dropping my tracks. You know what else I really like? When Jack White did that Insane Clown Posse song . That's so fucking cool to me, so badass. He's like, "People see me as the coolest guy-- whatever." Because it's not about being the coolest guy, it's about being yourself. That's what I like. It's hard to do sometimes when it's crazy, and you're like, "Why am I doing this?" But then you gotta realize what you wanted in the beginning, and what you want out of it now, and how you can make that a reality.

Sonny Moore aka Skrillex is a record producer, DJ, musician, singer and songwriter hailing from Los Angeles who has won 8 Grammy Awards, been named MTV's Electronic Dance Music Artist of the Year, and holds the record for most Grammys won by an electronic artist. He's headlined arenas and festivals globally and graced the covers of magazine heavyweights like Rolling Stone and Wired. His recent travels have led to him collaborating with some of the most forward-thinking and avante garde voices in music such as Fred again.., Four Tet, Bladee, Yung Lean, Missy Elliot, Kid Cudi, Chief Keef, & countless others.

In February of 2023, Skrillex, Fred again.., & Four Tet decided to do a week long New York City takeover leading up to the release of Skrillex's highly anticipated sophomore album Quest For Fire . The trio played a series of surprise pop up raves across the city where tickets and location weren't announced until the day of show. Their first pop up took place on Valentine's Day at Good Room followed by a larger party two days later at Le Poisson Rouge where Skrillex would release Quest For Fire while performing. The trio then played a massive live set in the middle of Times Square for The Lot Radio broadcasted from a school bus turned sound system the following day. Skrillex would wrap up this historical week by announcing an additional surprise pop-up, this time taking place inside New York City's legendary Madison Square Garden with tickets selling out within minutes of the announcement. The event played out as a 5-hour long rave with Skrillex, Fred again.., and Four Tet DJing from the moment doors opened until close. Skrillex shocked fans by dropping an additional surprise album, Don't Get Too Close , in the middle of his performance and bootleg CD copies of the project were given out to attendees at the end of the night. This monumental week of performances and releases was referred to as a "masterclass of album rollout" by Billboard magazine and marked the beginning of a new era in Skrillex's prolific career.

Previous work with Jack Ü, his project with Diplo, had their eponymous album reach #1 on the US Dance charts with the track "Where Are Ü Now" ft Justin Bieber going 4x platinum. Skrillex linked with Bieber again for the 8x platinum "Sorry," which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. His label, OWSLA, has launched the careers of some of the most powerful names in electronic music including Marshmello, Zedd, Porter Robinson & Mija. He later worked with friend/cult filmmaker Harmony Korine by scoring his critically acclaimed Spring Breakers movie and composed an original track for Pixar's Wreck It Ralph . He simultaneously penned one of the biggest club hits of the year with A$AP Rocky (Wild For The Night) and dropped his first fashion collaboration with G-Star (it sold out globally in a matter of days). Skrillex took some much needed time off from a never ceasing touring schedule to enjoy some time split between Tokyo and Los Angeles for a creative sabbatical, where his focus was on finishing up a trove of new music.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Skrillex started 2023 on a high note by releasing a series of collaborative singles and selling out pop-up performances across the world while sharing his travels with fans through social media. This captivating run quickly garnered the attention and praise from both his fanbase and press alike. With recent releases such as "Rumble" featuring Fred again.. & Flowdan along with "Xena" featuring Nai Barghouti all receiving positive reception, Skrillex's new music continues to highlight why the forward-thinking producer remains on top of his genre. His work with Trippie Redd and PinkPantheress on "Way Back" add to his legacy as a genre expanding musician who is never afraid to work outside of his own lane. Skrillex also dropped his first music video of the year alongside DrainGang CEO Bladee showing off his new look on their collaborative single "Real Spring." He released his sophomore album Quest For Fire on February 17th of 2023 and followed up with an additional surprise album, Don't Get Too Close , on February 18th which he dropped during his sold out performance at MSG alongside Fred again.. and Four Tet. The trio's collaborative track "Baby again..," which became a fan favorite after initially being previewed by Fred again.. during his legendary Boiler Room debut, was officially released on March 17th of 2023 with an accompanying hour long video that was filmed during their pop up rave at MSG. While there is no clear end in sight, one thing that's certain is that Skrillex's new music continues to elevate the landscape of music towards new heights.

Skrillex teases third 2023 album “London is Londoning, Next album is albuming”

The resurgent DJ and producer is only just getting started

Photo of Skrillex wearing a black t-shirt.

Skrillex has confirmed the rumours that he will be releasing at least one more album in 2023.

Earlier this week, the LA-based DJ and producer shared a carousel post on  Instagram , depicting studio sessions with a number of artists including Jyoty , Sam Gellaitry ,  TSHA ,  Randomer , and more. The caption read: “London is Londoning, Next album is albuming.”

More artists who appeared in the gallery post include Logan , zeina , ISOxo , RHR  and  Miss Lafamilia .  Fred Again.. ,  Four Tet  and Sam Interface are also tagged in the post, but do not appear in the images or videos.

The upcoming release will be Skrillex’s third in 2023, following ‘Quest For Fire’ , his first full-length project in nine years, and the poppier ‘Don't Get Too Close ’, which he surprised fans with less than 24 hours later.

News of a possible third LP initially broke last month, during a party with Rinse FM host Jyoty . During the show – where Skrillex and special guest M.I.A. were also performing – she hopped on the mic with the announcement: “We’ve been here working on a new Skrillex album.” The following day, Skrillex posted a cryptic list on his social media that read “QFF”, “DGTC”, “SKRLX” and “CONTRA”, alongside “23”.

The third album, likely titled “SKRLX”, will follow a string of high profile performances from the DJ in recent months, including landmark sets at  Coachella and New York’s Madison Square Garden, alongside Fred Again.. and Four Tet, and a five-hour set at Colorado’s legendary Red Rocks amphitheatre.

Lana Del Rey Drags Former Tour Manager for Quitting Just Over a Month Before Coachella

Lana Del Rey is putting a former collaborator on blast after her first weekend onstage at the 2024 Coachella Music Festival .

The 38-year-old hitmaker headlined Friday night (April 12) of the festival and will take the stage again on April 19 for a second weekend.

She reflected on the successful first week in a post on social media. While thanking her team, Lana went in on her former tour manager of 15 years for quitting suddenly shortly before the festival.

Keep reading to find out more…

On Instagram , Lana shared multiple photos from her set at Coachella and some behind the scenes pictures of the prep work.

In the caption, she thanked a teammate named Emily who took over the role of tour manager after her former manager Pete left.

She wrote that he “quit for no reason after 15 years because he was butt hurt that I got 10 comped bikes for free from Wally [Crowder] and randomly decided he was more of a stage designer than a tour manager…”

“Never got a phone call probably never will. Still grateful for the 15 years though. No worries – 37 days was more than enough time to put together an entire headlining set all by ourselves,” she continued. “Not stressful at all.”

Lana heaped praise on Emily , writing that she “f-cking killed it with grace.”

She also playfully asked her managers to email them if they decided to quit, too.

“15 years is a long time for us too☺️ thank you to Cody,” she joked.

Find out who joined Lana onstage for the first weekend of Coachella.

Lana Del Rey Reveals Former Tour Manager Quit “For No Reason” Before Coachella 2024

skrillex tour manager

By Sara Delgado

Lana Del Rey attends the 66th GRAMMY Awards at Crypto.com Arena on February 04 2024 in Los Angeles California.

Weekend one of Coachella 2024 might have been less than a week ago, but headliner Lana Del Rey is taking the time to walk down memory lane. On April 16, the star posted a series of snippets from her performance and penned a long and heartfelt letter to her team — during which she also put her former, long-time tour manager on blast for quitting right before the festival.

Four days after her performance, Lana Del Rey took to Instagram to share a carousel of pictures from her first Coachella 2024 set. Del Rey started her post sharing pictures of herself with Billie Eilish , Jon Batiste, and Jack Antonoff — the three guests she brought out during weekend one of the festival — and went on to include more snaps with her team from the night and prep.

“Thank you guys. For f*cking everything,” Del Rey captioned the post, sharing insight from the prep, even sharing she “caught laryngitis that literally left just a few hours before [she] hit the stage.” Del Rey went on to give her team members individual shoutouts, before calling out her former tour manager for quitting.

“[Thank you,] Emily, for stepping up as tour manager when Pete quit for no reason after 15 years because he was b*tt hurt that I got 10 comped bikes for free from Wally and randomly decided he was more of a stage designer than a tour manager,” the star’s captions read.

Del Rey continued saying she “never got a phone call” from Pete and “probably never will.” She graciously added that she is “still grateful for the 15 years” before packing in another jab: “No worries – 37 days was more than enough time to put together an entire headlining set all by ourselves. Not stressful at all. Way to go, Emily, you f*cking killed it with grace.”

Del Rey signed off the post, writing: “Please send me an email if you decide to quit this year - 15 years is a long time for us, too,” with a smiling emoji. (In case you need a refresher, this Pete is the  same tour manager  Del Rey famously threw plates at in 2015 after  a performance in Dallas was canceled .)

Lana Del Rey Overcame Laryngitis and a Tour Manager’s Abrupt Exit Before Headlining Coachella

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Lana Del Rey expressed her deep gratitude for pretty much everyone who helped bring her headlining Coachella set to life — her band, her dancers, her management team, her production and stage crew, her special guests Billie Eilish , Jack Antonoff, Jon Batiste, and even her clairvoyant. Well, everyone, except her now ex-tour manager, who apparently quit just over a month before the performance.

Del Rey squeezed in the dig at ex-tour manager Pete in the middle of an otherwise effusive Instagram post , claiming he “quit for no reason after 15 years.” Del Rey then provided at least something resembling a reason, saying Pete allegedly left because he was “butt hurt that I got 10 comped bikes for free… and randomly decided he was more of a stage designer than a tour manager” (the bikes are ostensibly a reference to the motorcycles Del Rey used for her grand entrance).

But apparently, Pete’s sudden departure wasn’t the only bit of chaos to engulf Del Rey’s preparations. She noted that her band spent “months” practicing in a Los Angeles warehouse that apparently got so cold Del Rey caught laryngitis. Luckily, the singer said, the infection “left just a few hours before I hit the stage,” with Del Rey giving all the credit to her clairvoyant/healer Tessa DiPietro, who “spent two hours lifting that cough remotely through her body intuitive skills just minutes before showtime.”

Del Rey helped kick off Coachella with her headlining set closing out the festival’s first day, last Friday. It marked the singer-songwriter’s first performance at the festival since 2014. She’ll of course be back this Friday for weekend two.

Coachella is one of several festival gigs Del Rey has scheduled around the world this year, though the only other U.S. date she has is Hangout Fest in Alabama in May. She’s also prepping her next album, Lasso , a country record that’s expected to arrive in September.

What’s 15 Years Working for Lana Del Rey Worth?

Portrait of Justin Curto

Lana Del Rey ’s Coachella prep sure sounds like a ride. In true Del Rey fashion, she turned what was ostensibly a thank-you post after her headlining set into an airing of grievances — beginning with her 15-year tour manager, who quit 37 days before the set. “Emily for stepping up as tour manager when Pete quit for no reason after 15 years because he was butt hurt that I got 10 comped bikes for free from Wally and randomly decided he was more of a stage designer than a tour manager …,” Del Rey wrote. “Never got a phone call probably never will. Still grateful for the 15 years though.” She’s talking about the motorcycles that rode out during the set, gifted to her by stuntman Wally Crowder, who got his own thank-you “for my bad as bikes.” Sorry to Pete, but come on — ever heard of a two weeks’ notice?

“No worries — 37 days was more than enough time to put together an entire headlining set by ourselves,” Del Rey continued. “Not stressful at all.” The biggest stressor, it sounds like, was Del Rey catching laryngitis after “spending months in Sylmar in a 40° warehouse.” Thus, one of Del Rey’s biggest (honest) thank-yous goes to her friend Tessa DiPietro, whom she previously named a poem after on her collection Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass . “Tessa DiPietro spent two hours lifting that cough remotely through her body intuitive skills just minutes before showtime,” she wrote. So it really was a resurrection .
