Exciting Cruises to the South Pacific

On a South Pacific cruise with Celebrity, you'll venture to remote ports with thousands of years of history and culture layered into a natural landscape of breathtaking beauty. Travel to pristine beaches with turquoise lagoons, warm white sand, and natural splendor found in very few other places on Earth.

Explore Papeete and its iconic landscape made famous by artists such as Paul Gauguin. In Lautoka, Fiji, take a catamaran to an exquisite South Sea island for a day of snorkeling and exploring pristine beaches. During your stop in Raiatea, explore one of the most sacred sites in Polynesia, Taputapuatea Marae, an ancient temple and one-time site of religious ceremonies. Uncover a world of rich history and natural wonder on a captivating cruise to the South Pacific.

South Pacific Cruise Highlights

It's no secret that the islands of the South Pacific are home to some of the world’s best beaches. On the island of Papeete in Tahiti, you'll find Matavai Bay, where white sand and aquamarine waters make for the perfect place to relax. In Fiji, head to Lautoka's Vunabaka Bay for an unforgettable experience snorkeling over brilliant coral reefs. Raiatea boasts the immaculate, unspoiled beaches of nearby Taha'a, a secluded island just a short boat ride from the port.

Polynesian Culture

One of the most valuable experiences you can have while traveling the South Pacific is to learn about Polynesia’s rich cultures. The isolated position of the islands has given rise to traditions of music, storytelling, dance, and art. In Fiji, visit a typical village, where you’ll be welcomed with a traditional ceremony and kava juice. For a taste of local culture in Noumea, head to the vibrant municipal market, filled with exotic fruit, fragrant flowers, artisanal crafts, and snack bars.

Wildlife enthusiasts will find plenty of animal encounters during a South Pacific cruise, both ashore and in the water. Snorkel from the beaches of Tahiti and you could be swimming among rays, dolphins, black-tipped reef sharks, and sea turtles. While in Fiji, take a nature tour through Colo-i-Suva Forest Park. Stroll past rushing streams and tranquil pools, one with a rope swing, and be on the lookout for dazzling birds like robins, fantails, and the colorful musk parrot.

Featured South Pacific Cruise Ports

Pape'ete, tahiti.

There’s plenty to see in and around Papeete—if you can tear yourself away from Tahiti’s glorious beaches and coral reefs, that is. Visit the house where James Norman Hall lived and shop for juicy tropical fruits at the Papeete Market. Take a 4x4 safari into the lush backcountry, a world of jagged peaks, waterfalls, and dense rainforest. See the bay where Captain James Cook made landfall. Learn more about island crafts, including pareo tying and palm weaving.

Lautoka, Fiji

Lautoka is a laid-back city at the heart of Fiji’s sugar cane industry and is home to the largest sugar mill in the South Pacific. In town, chat with locals at the vibrant Lautoka Market and stroll the pretty botanical garden. Admire the Krishna Kaliya Hindu Temple, brilliant with sculptures and murals. And don’t miss those dazzling beaches; a catamaran will whisk you to a remote atoll of swaying palms, white sands, and sparkling seas for the ultimate South Pacific beach day.

Noumea, New Caledonia

Capital of the French territory of New Caledonia, Nouméa has both French and Polynesian influences. Visit St. Joseph’s Cathedral and the City of Nouméa Museum to learn about the history of the island. Head for the bustling market to sample bougna, chicken or fish slow-cooked in banana leaves with yam, sweet potato, and banana. Relax on exquisite coral sand beaches and snorkel over vibrant reefs in the sapphire Pacific.

South Pacific Cruises: 4 Bora Bora Facts That You Didn't Know

Bora Bora, tucked in the shadow of Mount Otemanu is Bora Bora, is a popular cruise destination for people who truly want to surround themselves with natural beauty. On  cruises to the South Pacific  you can explore this fascinating island and tap into its legendary allure. Before your next  South Pacific cruise , check out four Bora Bora facts you never knew about this jewel of French Polynesia:

Unlike many locations that have four traditional seasons, Bora Bora only has two. Its dry season, which is considered winter, lasts from June through August. Its wet season, which is considered summer, lasts from December through February. No matter when you choose to depart, you're sure to  experience beauty   unique to this corner of the world.

From 1942 to 1946, Bora Bora served as a supply base and was home to around 6,000 U.S. military personnel. A few reminders of this period in Bora Bora’s history remain today, like the runway at Motu Mute and several cannons around the island.

Another intriguing Bora Bora fact: The island was first known as Pora Pora, which translates to "first born." Bora Bora is said to have been the first island pulled from the waters by the god Ta'aroa after  Raiatea  was created. Additionally, there is no equivalent to the "B" sound in Tahitian language. So when Captain James Cook and early settlers came to the island, they misheard the words of the natives, which eventually led to the rest of the world referring to it as "Bora Bora."

There are no poisonous insects or snakes on Bora Bora. And while there are no native mammals on the island, it is home to many dogs, cats, sheep, and cows. Its waters are lush with colorful coral reefs and a variety of marine life, from lemon sharks and jackfish to sea turtles and dolphins, that can be explored on a  snorkeling excursion .

Choosing the right South Pacific cruise can seem overwhelming with the myriad of options available. However, with a little research and careful planning, you can find the perfect cruise that suits your preferences and budget. Consider factors like the duration of the cruise, the specific islands you want to visit, and the amenities and activities offered onboard.

In this article, we will delve deeper into what you can expect on a South Pacific cruise and provide insights to help you make the most of your journey. From itinerary highlights and onboard amenities to dining options and shore excursions, we will cover everything you need to know to ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience. So sit back, relax, and let’s embark on an unforgettable adventure through the stunning islands of the South Pacific.

Choosing the Right South Pacific Cruise

When it comes to selecting a South Pacific cruise, it’s important to consider your own preferences and what you hope to experience during your journey. Here are a few factors to keep in mind when choosing the right cruise:

  • Itinerary: Look for cruises that visit the islands you are most interested in exploring. Whether you’re drawn to the turquoise lagoons of French Polynesia, the pristine beaches of the Cook Islands, or the volcanic landscapes of Vanuatu, there are cruises that cater to different preferences.
  • Cruise Length: South Pacific cruises typically range from 7 to 14 days, although longer itineraries are available. Consider how much time you have available and how many islands you want to visit. Keep in mind that longer cruises may offer a more in-depth exploration of the region.
  • Onboard Amenities: Different cruise lines offer a range of amenities to enhance your experience. From luxurious spas and fitness centers to swimming pools and entertainment venues, consider what features are most important to you.
  • Ship Size: Large cruise ships offer a wide range of onboard activities and entertainment options, while smaller ships may provide a more intimate and personalized experience. Think about whether you prefer a larger vessel with more amenities or a smaller ship that can access smaller, more remote ports.
  • Budget: South Pacific cruises can vary greatly in price. Determine your budget and explore different cruise lines and itineraries to find the best value for your money. Keep in mind that additional expenses such as gratuities, alcoholic beverages, and shore excursions may not be included in the initial price.
  • Cruise Line Reputation: Research the reputation and reviews of different cruise lines to ensure a positive and enjoyable experience. Look for reputable cruise lines that prioritize safety, excellent service, and quality onboard experiences.

By considering these factors and conducting thorough research, you can make an informed decision when choosing the right South Pacific cruise for your needs. Remember, each cruise has its own unique offerings, so take the time to explore the itineraries, amenities, and cruise line reputations to ensure a memorable and fulfilling journey through the stunning islands of the South Pacific.

When choosing a cruise, consider which amenities are important to you and align with your interests. Whether you prefer relaxation, entertainment, or a combination of both, there’s always something to keep you entertained and make your South Pacific cruise truly memorable.

Here, you can savor a diverse menu featuring a variety of appetizers, salads, soups, main courses, and delectable desserts. Packing Tips

Packing for a South Pacific cruise requires careful consideration to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable journey. Here are some essential packing tips to help you prepare for your adventure:

  • Climate and Weather: The South Pacific is known for its warm and tropical climate, so pack lightweight and breathable clothing. Include items like swimwear, shorts, dresses, and lightweight tops. Don’t forget to pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Formal Attire: Most cruises have formal nights, so pack at least one or two elegant outfits for these occasions. Men can bring a suit or dress shirt with dress pants, while women can opt for a cocktail dress or formal gown.
  • Comfortable Shoes: Plan for various activities and excursions by packing comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. Flip-flops or sandals are also essential for beach days and relaxing by the pool.
  • Layered Clothing: While the South Pacific is generally warm, evenings and air-conditioned areas onboard can become cooler. Pack a light jacket or sweater for these occasions to stay comfortable.
  • Swimwear and Beach Essentials: As beach days are a highlight of a South Pacific cruise, make sure to pack multiple sets of swimwear. Don’t forget beach towels, a beach bag, and waterproof sunscreen to protect yourself while enjoying the sun and water.
  • Medications and First Aid: Bring any necessary prescription medications, as well as basic first-aid supplies. It’s also a good idea to carry seasickness medication if you’re prone to motion sickness.
  • Power Adapters and Electronics: The South Pacific uses various power outlets, so be sure to bring the appropriate adapters for your electronics. This will allow you to stay connected and charge your devices throughout the journey.
  • Reusable Water Bottle and Snacks: Stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle to refill onboard. Additionally, pack some snacks for excursions or late-night cravings, as the availability of food may be limited during certain times.
  • Travel Documents: Don’t forget to bring essential travel documents such as your passport, cruise tickets, travel insurance details, and any necessary visas or identification cards.

Remember to pack light and only bring what you truly need. Most cruise ships offer laundry services or self-service laundromats, allowing you to refresh your clothes during the trip if needed.

Lastly, be sure to check the specific luggage restrictions and guidelines provided by your cruise line to avoid any last-minute surprises while packing.

With these packing tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of your South Pacific cruise and enjoy every moment of your unforgettable journey.

What’s the weather like in the South Pacific?

The South Pacific islands have a tropical climate with only two seasons: a wet season from November to April and a dry season from May to October.

The weather is hot all year round, though it's hotter and stickier in the wet season and tropical cyclones and typhoons can occur.

The dry season sees clearer skies and cooler temperatures, though daytime highs rarely dip below the low 60s (F).

The water temperatures don't fluctuate much, with average temperatures lingering between a pleasant 81°F and 84°F.

When is the best time to visit the South Pacific?

The most popular time to visit the South Pacific is in the dry season from May to October when skies are clear and humidity is low.

However, these months also see the biggest influx of tourists so expect busier beaches and higher prices for things like accommodation.

The wet season is the quietest time in the South Pacific and if you don't mind hotter, stickier and wetter weather, it can be a great time to enjoy the islands in their most idyllic state.

What do I pack for the South Pacific?

The South Pacific region experiences tropical weather, so packing sandals, sunscreen and plenty of swimwear is a must. Because of the high temperatures and often humid conditions (depending on the time of year), packing lightweight, breathable clothing (think linen or cotton) is also a good idea. You might also want to consider packing comfortable walking shoes for exploring the islands and insect repellant for those pesky tropical bugs.

What is the internet access like in the South Pacific?

While the South Pacific is largely remote as a region (the only way to get there from neighboring countries is to fly), it's fairly connected with great internet access across Samoa, the Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Fiji. However, there are some exceptions as each island boasts lush tropical rainforests that can interfere with your mobile coverage. Having said that, if you stick to the populated areas, most hotels and restaurants should have wifi for you to connect to.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Closest Cruise Ports Near Me: Midwest United States

Here's how to choose the best cruise port.

By Robert Schrader | Published on July 19, 2023

If you live in the Midwest United States and Google "cruise ports near me," you might initially feel shocked. As a born-and-bred Midwesterner, I know all too well what an ordeal getting to the coast can be! Whether you fly west to Los Angeles and Seattle, or southward to Houston, New Orleans or Miami, the idea of having to take a flight before you take your cruise can be daunting. I, however, prefer to think of it as exhilarating — here's why.

The Truth About Cruising From The Midwest

Couple getting Ready to Board at the Airport

There are a lot of reasons to love living in the Midwest — easy access to the ocean is not among them. Growing up, I remember many a long drive to the Gulf or the Atlantic, arguably more than any beach or seafood meal. As an adult, however, I can appreciate that there's opportunity in having to reach one destination en route to another, even as an adult who's spent a fair few living outside the middle of the country.

Indeed, rather than asking, "Where is the closest cruise port to me?" you might instead ask where the coolest one is. Depending on how much time you've allocated for your cruise and the preferences of the people in your party, you can think of the place where you set sail from as a trip-within-a-trip. Before your ship leaves or after it returns to port, make the most of your travels by diving into the city where you'll embark on your journey.

Another factor to keep in mind, beyond convenience and personal preferences, is that not all cruise destinations are accessible from every cruise port. Obviously, if you're cruising to the Caribbean , doing so from the West Coast will be a very circuitous journey indeed. Likewise, the vast majority of Alaska cruises depart from Seattle, or even from ports in Alaska itself, depending upon which one you choose.

Here, too, lies an opportunity. Personally, rather than wondering about the nearest cruise port to me, I sometimes think of the two main decisions I need to make — where I'll leave from and where I'll go — together. Heading to Central America from New Orleans, for example, is a package deal. You can see the stunning beaches of Belize on the front end, then swim through a world of sugar and dough with beignets  at Café du Monde in New Orleans on the back end. Which combination will you choose?

The Best Cruise Port To The Caribbean

Sunny Day Beach, Galveston, Texas

It's no surprise that the Caribbean is one of the world's most diverse cruising destinations, with as many ports to visit as there are postcard-perfect beaches. Some of the most popular ports for Caribbean cruises include Galveston (near Houston), New Orleans and the ports of Fort Lauderdale and Miami in South Florida. These ports are just a quick — and often affordable — flight from the Midwestern United States.

The Galveston  cruise port is a popular option, for many reasons. For travelers who are flying, the fact that both of Houston's airports are hubs means you'll have your pick of convenient flights from the Midwest. Driving to the coast? While the Houston area isn't exactly close to most of the Midwest, it's a relatively straight shot. As far as what to do in Galveston? Let's just say that if the beaches (and beach boardwalk) don't entice, the amazing seafood meals and century-old architecture should do the trick.

When it comes to Florida  cruise ports, meanwhile, you've got even more options. If you can plan for a few days here before or after your cruise vacation, you can explore all of South Florida, and maybe even beyond that. With a couple of days, you can explore everywhere from Palm Beach to South Beach; and with a few more than that, you could do a Florida Keys road trip.

Considering the New Orleans  cruise port? This is a personal favorite of mine. Usually, I like to set sail for my destination (typically somewhere in Mexico or Central America, but sometimes farther east) and then return to the Big Easy as my reward for a trip well-taken. Depending on my mood, I may just chill out in the French Quarter, explore churches and cemeteries, stuff myself on Jambalaya or even boat through the nearby bayous.

Where To Begin Your Pacific Pilgrimage

Santa Monica Pier at Sunset, LA

Pacific cruises aren't as typical of a choice for Midwestern travelers for one obvious reason: Los Angeles  is a lot farther than Louisiana! On the other hand, no matter where on America's left coast you hit the open sea from, Pacific cruises are more than worth the journey of getting there. This would be true even if you didn't spend a couple days in the port city but is especially true if you do.

Headed to Mexico? Even though ports in the LA area will never appear in a list of "cruise ports near me" if you live in cities like Chicago or St. Louis, SoCal is more than just a gateway to Mexico's Baja Peninsula or offshore Catalina Island. Sometimes, I like to spend a day or two here and rent a car. From there, I head north along the 101 to Malibu or Santa Barbara, or dig into unique neighborhoods — Thai town and its spicy food are a personal favorite place to stop.

If you have a little longer before or after your cruise, you have endlessly more options. Head south, whether to the OC and Laguna Beach or all the way to San Diego. You could also drive eastward into the desert, whether to the famous Joshua Tree or to somewhere more obscure or even farther north along the Pacific Coast Highway to Big Sur and beyond. Los Angeles is the city of dreams not just for Hollywood hopefuls, but also for travelers with inspiration and curiosity.

Apart from the Los Angeles cruise port, the most popular place to set sail is probably Seattle, which is a common jumping-off-point for cruises to Alaska. Here, you can spend a night or two and explore exciting neighborhoods like Downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill, or stay longer and hike Mt. Rainier or destinations even farther into the rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. Some Alaska cruises even depart from Anchorage. If you fly here, spend some time kayaking near Seward or even enjoy a drive north to Fairbanks before you head for even wilder waters.

The Europe Cruising Quandary

Spain Barcelona Barceloneta Beach City View

While it's technically possible to cruise all the way to Europe from ports on the east coast of the United States, many shorter European cruises actually depart from European ports. Some popular options include Barcelona, the timeless city of Antoni Gaudí where the curious sounds of Catalán  are as audible as more familiar Castellano, and the floating city of Venice, where your cruise vessel isn't the only ship that can take you somewhere exciting.

In this instance, being in the Midwest doesn't actually put you at much of a disadvantage compared to other American travelers. You may need to connect somewhere if you don't live in a city with a major hub (as I don't), but everyone who isn't sailing the whole way to Europe will have to get on a plane . If you think a Europe cruise will float your boat, then, don't stress out about the journey to your destination.

Instead, get excited: Most major European ports are well-connected to regions and cities you're unlikely to visit on your cruise itinerary — this really is two trips in one. Cruising from Athens? Use your days in the ancient city as an opportunity to head to inland Greek destinations like Mount Olympus and the monastery of Meteora, or even to head north into Balkan countries like Albania, Macedonia, Bosnia and beyond.

When "the closest cruise port to me" is on the other side of the ocean, it also invites you to make more adventurous choices. Everyone loves the Mediterranean, for example, by why not head north and sail beneath summer's Midnight Sun? Whether from the fairy tale city of Copenhagen and its Little Mermaid statue or from London where traveling the world can be as simple as visiting a few different neighborhoods, Northern Europe is a hotter cruise destination than its temperatures suggest.

North Korea says it tested ‘super-large’ cruise missile warhead and new anti-aircraft missile

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea said Saturday it tested a “super-large” cruise missile warhead and a new anti-aircraft missile in a western coastal area as it expands military capabilities in the face of deepening tensions with the United States and South Korea.

North Korean state media said the country’s missile administration on Friday conducted a “power test” for the warhead designed for the Hwasal-1 Ra-3 strategic cruise missile and a test-launch of the Pyoljji-1-2 anti-aircraft missile. It said the tests attained an unspecified “certain goal.”

Photos released by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency showed at least two missiles being fired off launcher trucks at a runway.

North Korea conducted a similar set of tests Feb. 2, but at the time did not specify the names of the cruise missile or the anti-aircraft missile, indicating it was possibly seeing technological progress after testing the same system over weeks.

KCNA insisted Friday’s tests were part of the North’s regular military development activities and had nothing to do with the “surrounding situation.”

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are at their highest in years, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un dialing up his weapons demonstrations, which have included more powerful missiles aimed at the U.S. mainland and U.S. targets in the Pacific. The United States, South Korea and Japan have responded by expanding their combined military training and sharpening their deterrence strategies built around strategic U.S. assets.

Cruise missiles are among a growing collection of North Korean weapons designed to overwhelm regional missile defenses. They supplement the North’s vast lineup of ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles aimed at the continental United States.

Analysts say anti-aircraft missile technology is an area where North Korea could benefit from its deepening military cooperation with Russia, as the two countries align in the face of their separate, intensifying confrontations with the U.S. The United States and South Korea have accused North Korea of providing artillery shells and other equipment to Russia to help extend its warfighting in Ukraine.

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

 Sir Francis Canker/Getty Images

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR.

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

Notable Kremlin Towers

Robert Schrader

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated.

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable.

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.

North Korea tests new 'super-large warhead' and anti-ship missile

North Korea conducts a test launch of a "Pyoljji-1-2" new-type anti-aircraft missile in this photo released Saturday.

North Korea has conducted a test of a “super-large warhead” for its "strategic" cruise missiles as well as a test-firing of a new anti-aircraft missile, state-run media said Saturday, as Pyongyang continues to add new weapons to its growing arsenal.

“Through the test launch, a certain goal was attained,” it added without giving more details.

North Korea uses the term “strategic” to refer to weapons that are intended to carry nuclear warheads.

“Both tests were part of the regular activities of the administration and its affiliated defense science institutes for the rapid development of technologies in various aspects such as tactical and technical performance and operation of new-type weapon systems,” the KCNA report said, adding that they “had nothing to do with” the regional security situation.

North Korea conducts a test of a

Earlier this month, North Korea tested what it said was a new type of intermediate-range solid-fueled ballistic missile loaded with a newly developed hypersonic glide vehicle. While the launches of ballistic missiles have garnered headlines, the nuclear-armed country has also tested a number of new strategic cruise missiles and submarine-launched weapons since the beginning of the year.

Experts say cruise missiles present a unique danger in that they can fly low and maneuver, making them potentially very difficult to intercept by air and missile defenses. Unlike ballistic weapons, North Korea’s cruise missiles are not banned under United Nations sanctions imposed on Pyongyang.
