Review — STAR TREK ASCENDANCY Moves into the Gamma Quadrant with New Dominion War and Breen Expansions

Connect with trekcore.

The team at Gale Force Nine is back with their latest addition to the Star Trek: Ascendancy tabletop game: two expansions which let players step into the role of the imposing Dominion or the enigmatic Breen Confederacy.

Debuting originally in 2016, Star Trek: Ascendancy is a 4X strategy game where you steer a galactic power to explore the  Star Trek universe, exploit its resources, expand your territory, and exterminate anyone who stands in your way. These two new releases bring the total number of player factions up to nine — plus an appropriately ‘automated’ Borg threat.

Such an extensive roster offers endless combinations of how you can battle for supremacy in the Alpha Quadrant — and with the Dominion expansion, the Gamma Quadrant as well!

The theming is strong for the reclusive Breen, who gain powerful advantages when defending their territory. Between chances to automatically destroy ships, reroll missed To-Hit rolls in combat, and deny opponents the chance to retreat from battle, the prospect of going toe-to-toe with the Breen on their home turf is a daunting one.

Players will still need to keep their weapons technology advancing steadily though, as all the advantages in the universe can still be stymied by powerful shields. And speaking of advantages out in the universe, the Breen’s new system discs offer a bevy of Culture and Open slots that offer a lot of value to savvy players while ships are exploring strange new worlds.

One-time allies of the Breen, the Dominion are not to be discounted either. This faction sports powerful combat abilities, led by their Ketracel-White ability to reroll failed attacks. The Dominion’s fleets are geared for battle as well, generating new ships while in flight and overpowering enemies with heavily-shielded armadas.

Their research opportunities highlight each of the three major components in the Dominion’s social structure: the Jem’Hadar generate Command tokens to trigger more combat rerolls, Vorta commanders help to resist Hegemony takeovers by enemy powers, and a novel mechanic allows for the Founders to infiltrate opponents’ systems and sow discord by moving ships out of position or making homeworlds easier to invade.

With the right advancements in place, the shapeshifting Founders can be very difficult to remove after they’ve infiltrated your territory and inflict costly losses — but it will take quite some time before they can put their full apparatus in place, so wise players will strike them quickly before it’s too late. The Dominion’s putative drawback, their inability to suborn another faction’s systems culturally, only means their fleets will be on the warpath all the sooner.

The arrival of the Dominion wouldn’t be complete without their native Gamma Quadrant. This expansion comes with rules for discovering star systems sequestered on the far side of the galaxy – and braving the wormhole can be added to games even without a Dominion player! The tile linking Bajor to the Idran system does a good job modeling the physical and conceptual distance that the Gamma Quadrant represents in the TV series; at the same time, it takes up a lot of real estate on the game area for relatively little value in play.

It’s perfect from a lore point of view, but if you use the Gamma rules at all you may want to leave it as a random event that might replace a phenomenon rather than forcing the Dominion player to start in their own private region.

The Dominion brings not only a new faction from beyond the wormhole, but a new game scenario: team play with the Dominion War. The rules introduce Alliance cards, which players can use to swing conflicts in their favor: deploying fleets, accelerating research, and rushing to the contested front to provide aid.

Several cards can also be used to directly assist your teammates by bolstering their forces or switching cards in your hand with theirs. This helps to add a level of meta-interaction that the alliance format otherwise reduces compared to a standard game. Conspiring with your allies to drop crucial cards beyond the normal flow of play is a nice injection of strategy and variety in what otherwise may feel like a more rote scenario.

The revised win conditions do require conquering at least one enemy homeworld, so a formidable military presence will be necessary in some aspect of your team’s plans. Turtling up and stalling for Ascendancy won’t save you, and there’s much less incentive to engage in table talk when Initiative is always random and there is no possibility of your current adversary becoming an ally of convenience in future turns: it’s a battle to the death.

star trek ascendancy release date

This has pluses and minuses for different factions; aggressive ones like Klingons and the Dominion will always have a way to deploy their strengths. Others that focus on heavy peaceful interaction — like the Ferengi (limited to only one trade agreement) or the Vulcans (who peddle their ambassadors as helpful observers across a wide area of the boards) — will find their typical playstyle somewhat hamstrung.

On the other hand, Vulcans won’t have to worry about their ‘No Lying’ edict when it’s clear that they’re going for the throat. The Ferengi ability to add spacelanes without numeric restriction may also be particularly handy in a play area that is quite crowded from the start.

Another great addition that the Alliance rules bring is the Resistance deck. In the Dominion War, there is no player elimination. When a faction has their homeworld taken over by an enemy power, they aren’t erased from the map but rather become a sort of vassal to the faction who conquered them. Sending part of their resources off, allowing free passage — and all the while, plotting a rebellion and aiding their remaining allies!

The Resistance cards take the place of the player’s Alliance cards, and allow them to strike a blow against their conqueror, build ships for themselves or an ally, and even liberate themselves outright and rejoin the game with their full regular abilities again (with or without the assistance of their allies to free their homeworld).

The chance to support the team even when your faction is all but vanquished is a terrific addition that greatly suits this style of play.

star trek ascendancy release date

The initial setup for the Dominion War does accelerate play right to the midgame, with mature empires turning their gazes outward among the other players, who have all made first contact at the start. Full fleet and Starbase complements are available regardless of Ascendancy, and extra starting resources can quickly enable you to spread your ships far and wide.

Removing some of the randomness in initial system draws prevents any one player from being significantly set back by bad luck in dangerous phenomena or resource-poor planets; this also takes some of the thrill of exploration away — and hobbles the Federation’s perk for generating Culture from new discoveries.

There’s less time on average for Research projects to be initiated and mature without the threat of enemy ships bearing down on you, so fewer signature abilities may be brought to bear in some games.

star trek ascendancy release date

Playing Star Trek: Ascendancy with several first-timers — but long-time board gamers — I found that it hits the sweet spot with simplicity of mechanics while it also maintains enough strategic depth to be highly replayable, which is a great combination in a game that will occupy the better part of your day.

The components in the new set maintain the excellent quality consumers have come to expect from this product line, and the spot-on theming will please any Trekkie eager to turn their eye toward a tactical take on exploring their favorite fictional universe. Pick up the Breen if you’re eager to try a tenacious and insular faction that has the bite to match their slowly-growing ambition.

You’ll want to grab The Dominion for the alliance rules alone, but there’s great value in the introduction of a new way to build your galactic map with the Gamma Quadrant and a powerful faction armed with relentless assault ships and insidious spies throwing rival empires into chaos.

Star Trek Ascendancy Game Review

The first galactic accords.

Captain’s log. Stardate 11.16.2016. War has plagued the galaxy, and plunged it into chaos and disarray. I’ve called a diplomatic summit to discuss terms of ceasefire. Delegations from Kronos and Romulus will be in attendance.

Picard: My name is Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Thank you for agreeing to these talks. It is my aspiration that we can reach mutually beneficial accords.

Kor: I am Dahar Master Kor, son of Rynar, last son of the glorious house of Kor.

Romulan: I have no interest in divulging my identity. I am here as a courtesy.

image

Picard: Let us begin. We have been enemies for far too long. It is time for us to come together for the good of the galaxy. If we end this destructive prolonged conflict, we have the potential to achieve collective ascendancy.

Romulan: And why should the Romulans share our victory with technologically inferior societies? We have worked from the start to improve our culture through science.

image

We have built superior research laboratories across our empire, spread our superior influence with planets either willing to join us or too weak to resist.

image

We have defended our systems, at great expense, from the primitive and barbaric Klingon war-mongers.

Kor: Primitive? Barbaric? We are not animals, nor will we be looked down on by treacherous Romulans. We Klingons have a glorious culture and a rich history. Glory is only truly obtained through battle. With every battle fought, we advance the culture of our people.

image

We should see how long your science lasts against our superior battle fleets. The Klingon empire is unrivaled in production. Our factories and shipyards will build us a great empire.

image

Our mighty fleets will decimate your forces and destroy your planets. None can compare to the might of our military. Our invasion forces are unstoppable and our marauding fleets will strip you of your valuable resources.

image

Romulan: Your desire for battle is negated by your inept military tactics. Romulans will fight when necessary, but on our terms. Our orbital mines will disrupt your invasion fleets, and our superior cloaking technology will destroy your ships before they have a chance to fire.

image

Picard: Gentlemen, please. Can’t we all just….get along?

Kor: With this pretentious, traitorous–

Romulan: This irrational, belligerent–

Picard: BOTH OF YOU. ENOUGH!! Our peoples have suffered too much. We’ve been at war for hours. Let us make peace. The true development of culture comes from a free exchange of ideas. Culture comes from exploration, finding new life and new civilization.

image

The Federation has grown not from warfare, but through diplomacy. I urge you both to reconsider your approaches. Let us make mutually beneficial trade agreements so that we may all share in the glory of an ascendant civilization.

image

Kor: The Klingons have no quarrel with the Federation at this time. We agree to these terms. Be warned. If you dishonor this agreement by attempting to convert Klingon planets to your Federation, we will strike back and rain vengeance upon your houses with a fury greater than you have ever known

Picard: Agreed. Let us….make it so. What say you, Romulan? Will you join us?

Romulan: I make no promises.

Kor: Filthy Romulans.

Picard: So do we have an accord? Can we agree to a ceasefire, a cessation of hostilities?

Kor: For now.

Romulan: We shall see.

Captain’s Log – Addendum: With a grave degree of uncertainty we venture into the unknown. Relations are tenuous at best. Romulans remain suspicious and the Klingons on edge. A roll of the dice could send us back into galactic war.

The Basics of Star Trek: Ascendancy

Star Trek: Ascendancy is an epic civilization-building game in which each player controls an iconic Star Trek faction. Players strive to expand their reach by gaining planets through conquest or diplomatic hegemony, building up a resource-generating infrastructure, and developing enough culture to ascend.

image

Each player starts at their own homeworld, the galaxy as yet unexplored. Throughout the course of the game, planets and stellar phenomena will be discovered and the galaxy will develop as the game progresses.

image

On a player’s turn, they first start out with a building phase. In this phase, players can build ships, colonize planets, commit research to technological advancements, and build resource-producing nodes of either research, production, or culture, depending on the planet’s capabilities.

image

They then move to their command phase. Each player starts with five commands that can be used to move ships at impulse or at warp, initiate space battles, commission fleets or starbases, launch planetary assaults, attempt diplomatic hegemony, or launch new advancement projects.

image

At the end of the round, planetary nodes will generate resources, either production tokens, research tokens, or culture tokens, depending on the node. Trade agreements will also provide additional production tokens.

image

At any point on their turn, players can trade in five culture tokens to ascend.

image

The first player to get five ascendancy tokens and maintain control of their homeworld until the end of the round is the winner. Or if you’re feeling particularly war-like, you can achieve a domination victory by conquering all three homeworlds–Earth, Kronos, and Romulus. Will you achieve ascendancy through diplomatic accords? Will your technology surpass all others? Or will you commit your battalions to complete galactic domination? The choices abound in Star Trek: Ascendancy.

My Thoughts on Star Trek: Ascendancy

I won’t mince words. I love, love, love this game. I love how asymmetrical the factions are. Each civilization offers its own unique abilities, technologies, and strategies. For those who enjoy combat, the Klingons give you that in droves. The Romulans excel at research, technology, and general engine-building. The Federation wants to spread influence peacefully and gain cultural superiority through diplomacy and exploration.

The main strength of the game is in its theme. In the most recent game that I played, we had a three-way victory brought about, in part, by the diplomatic efforts of the Federation. I’ve won a game as the Klingons by launching an all-out assault on my last turn. I’ve seen the Romulans quietly spread enough influence to steal the victory. This demonstrates the amazing way that Star Trek: Ascendancy nails the theme. It does justice to an IP that has been criminally underrepresented in board gaming.

I do have a few minor issues, though. The game unfortunately only comes with three factions. Both the Cardassian Union and the Ferengi Alliance expansions have been announced, but might not make it to us until next year. Still, each will add a new race with new ships, planets, and cards, allowing for additional players and more variety.

There is also a bit of an issue with player downtime. Waiting for the other players to take all of their actions can be tedious, especially if your group is prone to analysis paralysis. Though it’s not an inherent flaw, the game is long. Expect at least an hour per experienced player, although the rulebook does offer variants to speed up the game.

Overall, I highly recommend this game. If you want to experience the glory of Star Trek from the birth of a star-faring civilization to the height of a galactic empire, Star Trek: Ascendancy is the game for you.

“Live long and prosper.”

Star Trek Ascendancy enters its Final Frontier with a definitive collector’s edition of the sci-fi board game

Setting coordinates for Gamefound later this year.

Star Trek board game Star Trek Ascendancy is preparing for what appears to be its last hurrah with a definitive collector’s edition crowdfunding later this year.

Ascendancy launched in 2016 as a sweeping tabletop adaptation of the beloved sci-fi universe, putting players in control of one of three major factions - Federation, Romulan or Klingon - as they explored and laid claim to a galaxy created by a distinctive variable layout of star systems connected by space lanes.

The space board game ’s original three playable factions were later joined by a number of additional species and groups from the Star Trek, from the Ferengi, Vulcan and Borg to the Breen Confederacy in its most recent 2022 expansion. Meanwhile, expansions such as The Dominion War also introduced new areas for players to chart on their travels and rules variants allowing for competing alliances between multiple factions.

Upcoming release Star Trek Ascendancy: Final Frontier is billed as a complete collector’s edition by publisher Gale Force Nine, collecting the entire series - spanning the core game and its seven expansions - into a single box.

star trek ascendancy release date

Though Gale Force Nine is yet to officially confirm if Ascendancy will receive any more additions in the future, with its latest expansions releasing almost two years ago, the name of Final Frontier and description as being “definitive” and containing “all” of the game’s content certainly suggests that this may put at least a temporary pause on the almost decade-old Star Trek board game.

Star Trek Ascendancy: Final Frontier will crowdfund its release via a Gamefound campaign later in 2024 , the second in a planned run of re-releases and new games coming to the crowdfunding platform. It will be preceded by a new Conan the Barbarian game arriving in April and followed by a fresh edition of the Dune board game - similarly collecting its available expansions - early next year.

Star Trek: Ascendancy — a board game of exploration, expansion and conflict between the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Star Empire — lets you control the great civilizations of the Galaxy, striking out from your home worlds to expand your influence and grow your civilization.

Will you journey for peace and exploration, or will you travel the path of conquest and exploitation? Intensely territorial, the Breen annihilated the Klingon fleet sent to conquer them, leaving the Klingons no wiser as to who or even what they were facing. As the Romulans say, “Never turn your back on a Breen.”

Ascendancy Player Expansion Coming Soon

star trek ascendancy release date

The Ferengi are coming to Gale Force Nine’s Star Trek: Ascendancy

star trek ascendancy release date

Unlike other societies in the game, Ferengi eschew traditional “cultural advancement” in favor of the pursuit of profit. The Special Rules for the Ferengi player reinforce this by preventing Ferengi from building Culture Nodes. These rules also allow them to build profitable Production Nodes in lieu of a planet’s standard resource capacity and permitting them to purchase Culture Tokens at a cost of five Production Tokens each. For the Ferengi, profit is Culture.

star trek ascendancy release date

The player expansion contains all of the game pieces required to play as the Ferengi Alliance, including a Ferengi Control Console, 30 Ferengi Starships, and a deck of Ferengi Rules of Acquisition Cards. Other Civilizations devote tremendous resources to scientific and cultural advancements by means of their Advancement Cards whereas the Ferengi spend resources to add to the wisdom that has guided their civilization for centuries, the venerated Rules of Acquisition. Unique Ferengi Fleet Cards and Markers, Special Trade Agreement Cards and Ferengi Control Nodes round out the player’s components. The expansion also includes extra Resource Node game pieces, game tokens and space lanes.

star trek ascendancy release date

Of course, the Ferengi Alliance expansion includes ten new Systems to exploit, including the Ferengi homeworld of Ferenginar. Players may also visit the twin worlds of Straleb Madena and the desolate planetoid Rog. Two new phenomena are also introduced in this expansion, including the Mutara Nebula. Starships entering the Mutara Nebula will find that their Shields are useless, evening the odds in any space combat that may occur there.

star trek ascendancy release date

The Ferengi Alliance expansion introduces a new card type to the Exploration Card Deck, Allies. When an Ally card is drawn, a player has found a faction or person open to establishing an agreement if the player can pass a Diplomacy Test. New to this expansion, a Diplomacy Test is passed when the player rolls a die and adds their Ascendancy to the result, if the total is higher that the Diplomacy Number printed on the card, the test is passed and the Ally’s Special Rule goes into effect. Every player has a chance to encounter and negotiate with Allies in the game.

Look for both the Ferengi Alliance Player Expansion and Cardassian Union Player Expansion in stores later this year. GF9’ Star Trek: Ascendancy will be in general release in game and hobby stores this October.

For a full accounting of the Ferengi Alliance, visit Gale Force Nine at www.startrek.gf9games.com . In the following weeks GF9 will offer an in-depth audit of the new components found in the expansion, including the new Systems Discs, the special Ferengi Trade Agreements and the new Ally Exploration Cards.

‘Star Trek’ Origin Story Movie Will Be Set Decades Before 2009 Film

CinemaCon 2024: The new project will be produced by longtime “Star Trek” steward J.J. Abrams

star-trek-2009-chris-pine-zachary-quinto

Paramount Pictures is ready to boldly go (again).

After rumors circulated earlier this year, Paramount officially announced a new “Star Trek” prequel film on Thursday, this time taking place decades before the original 2009 “Star Trek” feature.

“Andor” director Toby Haynes will direct from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith (who is also writing another hotly touted CinemaCon title, the third “Now You See Me” film). J.J. Abrams is returning to produce.

But then again, we’ve heard about a new “Star Trek” movie before.

star trek ascendancy release date

During the run-up to “Star Trek Beyond” in 2016, it was revealed that a fourth film would reunite Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk with his deceased father (played, once again, by Chris Hemsworth). A year later, Quentin Tarantino approached Paramount about doing a “Star Trek” movie – this time as an R-rated gangster movie (based, in part, on the 1968 episode of the original series “A Piece of the Action”). In 2018 S.J. Clarkson, a TV vet who would eventually direct “Madame Web,” was hired to direct the fourth film in the Abrams-verse, but salary disputes led to Pine and Hemsworth leaving the project. That version was canceled in 2019 and Tarantino stated in 2020 that he wouldn’t be making his “Star Trek” either.

In November 2019 “Fargo” creator Noah Hawley was hired to write and direct a new “Star Trek” film based on his version of the series. A year later, this movie was canceled by new Paramount Pictures president Emma Watts. In 2021 “Star Trek: Discovery” writer Kalinda Vazquez was hired to write a version based on her original pitch, but a separate script was being developed by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The studio even set a summer 2023 release date for a new “Trek” (which “Trek” was the question).

In 2021 that release date was pushed to Christmas 2023, under the direction of “WandaVision” director Matt Shakman. Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires were brought on to retool the script. In early 2022 it was announced that the stars of the three previous “Star Trek” installments in the Abrams-verse would all be returning, although it was later reported that the actors had not entered negotiations to return.

In 2022 Shakman left “Star Trek” to join Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four.” But just last month Steve Yockey was hired to write a fourth “Star Trek” movie.

Now, we are finally getting word of another film in development, with another writer/director team. But it’s not the first time that a “Star Trek” prequel script has been floated, as Erik Jendresen, cowriter of “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning,” had submitted a script for “Star Trek: The Beginning” before J.J. had taken over and pitched his 2009 version. It depicted the Earth-Romulan War.

The Star Trek “Origin” Movie Is Finally Going Into Production

The new Star Trek prequel movie is set to be revealed on the big screen. Probably.

LOS ANGELES - DECEMBER 1: Leonard Nimoy as Commander Spock (Mr. Spock) in the STAR TREK: The Origina...

For 30 years — from 1979 to 2009 — the longest wait between new Star Trek feature films was seven years. And, for most of that period, from the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) to Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), there was almost always a new Star Trek movie in theaters every two to four years. But after the wildly successful J.J. Abrams-directed reboot film in 2009, the release clip for Trek movies went from maximum warp to impulse power, to glacially slow. And now, by the time the next Star Trek movie hits theaters, it will have been about 10 years since the previous one — Star Trek Beyond — beamed into cinemas in 2016.

Since that time, for Trekkies, updates of a new Star Trek film have been very similar to the game football Lucy plays with Charlie Brown; just when a hypothetical movie sounds real, it gets snatched away. But now, there’s a glimmer of hope. Thanks to reports out of CinemaCon 2024, it looks like, the next Trek film is scheduled for release in either 2025 or 2026. But what’s it about? And will it really happen?

Star Trek 14 is “an untitled origin story”

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in 'Star Trek' (2009).

The new “origin story” will be set before the 2009 reboot. But how many decades before?

During CinemaCon 2024, Paramount confirmed several in-development projects including a live-action GI Joe / Transformers crossover (teased in 2023’s Rise of the Beasts ), a hardcore Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action movie, a remake of the sci-fi thriller The Running Man (from Edgar Wright), the confirmation of an Avatar trilogy, and the assertion that a new Star Trek feature film will go into production this year, with a release date soon to follow.

Since 2016 to now, there have been at least five different attempts to make a new Star Trek film, either as timey wimey direct sequel to Beyond (“Star Trek 4”) a one-off space mobster movie (Quentin Tarantino’s script) or something else entirely (Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman’s attempts that remain undisclosed). But now, although Paramount is reportedly developing a sequel to Beyond — which would feature the reboot cast from the 2009 film one last time — the next Star Trek movie is not that sequel, but instead, as previously reported , an “origin story” that “takes place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film that rebooted the franchise.” This movie has been confirmed to be directed by Toby Haynes ( Andor, Doctor Who ) with a script from Seth Grahame-Smith ( The Lego Batman Movie , Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter) .

Wait? Wasn’t the 2009 film an “origin story?” While the answer to this question is technically a “yes,” the 2009 film (just titled Star Trek ) was also partially a time-travel sequel to the canon established in The Next Generation , and literally everything else in the Trek franchise up until that point. By saying the new prequel film takes place “decades before” the first reboot, this could hypothetically mean that the movie takes place in both the Prime and Kelvin timelines simultaneously.

TLDR: The Trek timeline diverged in the first reboot movie, beginning in the year 2233, so, a story set even a few decades before that divergence, in the 2210s or 2220s or earlier, would be consistent with all versions of Trek's future history. Presumably, the “origin story” won’t take place in the two decades between the prologue of the 2009 film (2233) and the main story (2258), because honestly, even for hardcore Trekkies that’s a big canon headache. So, sometime in the early 2200s, but before the 2230s is probably the best bet. And, even if the movie was set a bit earlier than that — say in the late 2180s or 2190s — we’d still be dealing with a very early point of Starfleet history that has never been depicted and that we know almost nothing about. Hence, if you squint — and don’t think about the prequel series Enterprise (2151-2161) too much — then yes, we’re looking at an origin story in which pretty much anything could happen.

Star Trek “origin” movie release date

LOS ANGELES - DECEMBER 1: The USS Enterprise during the opening credit for in the STAR TREK: The Ori...

One of the earliest shots of the USS Enterprise — from the 1964 Star Trek pilot episode “The Cage.” The new prequel film will likely be set half a century before this moment.

While some tweets out of CinemaCon seemed to indicate that the new Star Trek movie could hit next year in 2025 , TrekMovie confirmed that the “Untitled Star Trek Origin Story,” is on the Paramount slate for 2025 or 2026. TrekMovie also predicted that 2026 is more likely, writing, “If Paramount can move fast enough they could get the origin movie into theaters by 2026 — in time for Star Trek’s 60th anniversary.” Then again, 2025 is not impossible, it’s just cutting it a little close.

It should also be noted that the entire corporate entity of Paramount is reportedly close to a merger that would see it purchased by Skydance Media, the same production company behind the three existing J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek reboots. If that deal is finalized soon, then, yes, this Star Trek feature film might actually happen very quickly. And if it doesn’t, there will still be plenty of new Star Trek shows streaming , not to mention the first direct-to-streaming standalone Star Trek movie, Section 31 , starring Michelle Yeoh, which will hit Paramount+ sometime later this year.

All the reboot Star Trek films (2009-2016) are currently streaming on Paramount+. The previous ten films (1979-2002) are all on Max.

Star Trek Origin Movie Officially Announced By Paramount For 2025 Release

  • Paramount Pictures announces new Star Trek movie for 2025, directed by Toby Haynes and written by Seth Grahame-Smith.
  • Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 remains in development, while the new film is an origin story set decades before Abrams' 2009 movie.
  • Alongside the Star Trek origin movie, Paramount reveals a packed slate of exciting films for 2025-26 at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Paramount Pictures officially announces the next Star Trek movie, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2025. As reported in January, the next Star Trek movie isn't the long-delayed, Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 produced by J.J. Abrams, which remains in development at Paramount. Rather, the next Star Trek movie is an origin story directed by Toby Haynes ( Star Wars: Andor ) and written by Seth Grahame-Smith (A braham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ).

Screen Rant' s Rob Keyes (@rob_keyes) is at CinemaCon in Las Vegas where Paramount Pictures confirmed the next Star Trek movie , currently called Untitled Star Trek Origin Story , to be released in 2025. J.J. Abrams is also producing Untitled Star Trek Origin Story, which takes place decades before Abrams' Star Trek 2009 movie. See Rob Keyes' Tweet below:

Paramount also confirmed Untitled Star Trek Origin Story will begin production later this year for theatrical release in 2025.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Star trek's new movies in theaters and paramount plus explained, star trek is finally making movies again.

After nearly a decade, Star Trek i s back to making movies. Star Trek on Paramount+ has created a television renaissance for the franchise, but the theatrical side of Star Trek overseen by Paramount Pictures has languished in development hell since Star Trek Beyond bowed in the summer of 2016. Toby Haynes' Untitled Star Trek Origin Story is yet another prequel, but as it's said to be set decades before Star Trek 2009, it could very well be set after Star Trek: Enterprise 's mid-22nd century voyages but otherwise be an origin story for both Star Trek 's Prime and alternate Kelvin timelines .

Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 4 , which is the "final chapter" of the USS Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Spock, has seen some movement with a new screenwriter, Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant ), tackling the long-delayed sequel. Pine and his fellow Star Trek actors, including Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Sofia Boutella, have all expressed their eagerness to return if Star Trek 4 can come together.

It's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

Paramount+ is making their own Star Trek movies, with the recently-wrapped Star Trek: Section 31 awaiting a release date. Starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, Section 31 i s the first made-for-streaming Star Trek movie, and it is reportedly set during Star Trek 's "lost era" with connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation. Section 31 could get a sequel if successful, and the Star Trek: Picard spinoff dubbed Star Trek: Legacy may also become a streaming movie instead of a series. However all this shakes out, it's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

Star Trek Origin Movie Officially Announced By Paramount For 2025 Release

A Star Trek origin story movie is officially on the way from Andor and Black Mirror director

It's set to take place decades before 2009's Star Trek

Chris Pine in Star Trek Beyond

Paramount has officially announced a new Star Trek movie – but it's not Star Trek 4.

The Untitled Star Trek Origin Story was unveiled at CinemaCon, with J.J. Abrams set to produce (H/T The Wrap ). The film will take place decades before 2009's Star Trek, with Andor's Toby Haynes set to direct and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter author Seth Grahame-Smith set to pen the script. Plot details have yet to be released. Deadline first announced the film earlier this year.

Haynes directed the popular Black Mirror episode U.S.S Callister, which acts as a Star Trek parody. Black Mirror season 7 will feature a sequel to U.S.S Callister , though it has not yet been announced who will direct.

Paramount also stated that the origin pic would begin production later this year to make it in time for a 2025 theatrical release. Star Trek 4, the sequel to Abrams' 2009 flick, is still in development. WandaVision's Matt Shakman was previously attached to direct, but  left the project  in August 2022  around the same time he was announced as the new Fantastic Four director. Last month, Variety reported that Sucker Punch and Supernatural writer Steve Yockey would pen the fourth Star Trek film, which intends to bring back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and the rest of the cast.

The Untitled Star Trek Origin Story does not yet have a release date. For more, check out our list of the most exciting upcoming movies in 2024 and beyond, or, skip right to the good stuff with our list of movie release dates .
