Although it only lasted for three seasons in the 1960s, the original Star Trek has become one of the most influential TV series---and pieces of science fiction in any medium---of all time. Creator Gene Roddenberry's utopian vision focuses on exploration rather than conflict, as the starship Enterprise seeks out "new life and new civilizations." Led by William Shatner's hotheaded Capt. James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy's logical Vulcan Mr. Spock, and DeForest Kelley's irascible Dr. McCoy, Star Trek remains a sci-fi gold standard.

Seasons 1-3 of Star Trek are streaming on Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Thanks to the popularity of Star Trek reruns, NBC brought back Gene Roddenberry and many of the show's writers and actors for this animated version, which lasted for two seasons in the 1970s. It follows the continuing adventures of the Enterprise crew and has been considered an extension of the original series, with characters and concepts that later made their way into live-action. The animation may be rudimentary, but the stories are every bit as thoughtful and layered as the episodes of the original series.

Following the continued success of Star Trek reruns and theatrical films, creator Gene Roddenberry launched a new series with a new Enterprise crew, set even further in the future. Starring Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, The Next Generation continues Roddenberry's focus on a harmonious future, while expanding on alien races and galactic regions introduced in the original series. Co-starring Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, and more, The Next Generation has become every bit as iconic as its predecessor, setting the stage for decades of Trek to come.

Seasons 1-7 of Star Trek: The Next Generation are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Overlapping with the end of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine is the first Star Trek series to take place away from the Enterprise, set on a space station located in a volatile area of the galaxy. Avery Brooks leads the series as Capt. Benjamin Sisko, overseeing an unpredictable crew of Starfleet officers and alien allies, along with an entire station's worth of residents and businesses. In its later seasons, Deep Space Nine introduced serialized storytelling to Trek for the first time, gaining a reputation as the darkest and most mature Trek series to date.

Returning to the exploratory missions of a starship, Voyager takes Star Trek into an entirely new quadrant of the galaxy. The crew of the titular vessel is transported via a mysterious energy wave into an area of space where Starfleet has never been. Capt. Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) must lead her crew on a long journey home, while navigating the unfamiliar threats in this strange new region. Voyager expands the scope of Star Trek's universe while introducing fan-favorite characters like the holographic Doctor (Robert Picardo) and the former Borg Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan).

Seasons 1-7 of Star Trek: Voyager are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A prequel set in the years before the formation of the galaxy-spanning United Federation of Planets, Enterprise takes place on the starship Enterprise a century before it's occupied by Capt. Kirk and his crew. The primarily human crew is led by Capt. Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), as inhabitants of Earth are just beginning to explore the galaxy and encounter some of Star Trek's familiar alien races. Enterprise features a more action-oriented focus than previous Trek series, setting the tone for Trek series and movies to come, and its later seasons are driven by long-term serialized stories.

Seasons 1-4 of Star Trek: Enterprise are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

After a dormant period of more than a decade following the cancellation of Enterprise, Discovery brings Star Trek into the streaming era with another prequel. Set after Enterprise but before the original series, Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, the science officer on the starship Discovery. The first two seasons explore the early days of the Federation and revisit many classic Trek themes and characters. In later seasons, both the starship and the show are thrust forward hundreds of years into the future, truly going boldly where no Trek has gone before.

Seasons 1-4 of Star Trek: Discovery are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

In conjunction with Star Trek's streaming revival, this anthology of bite-size episodes provides supplemental stories for the new Trek era. Some are standalone pieces highlighting minor characters or side stories from Star Trek: Discovery, while others tie more closely to ongoing plots from Discovery (and later Star Trek: Picard as well). It's another way for Star Trek's creators to illustrate their expansive universe of galactic space exploration.

All episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Patrick Stewart reprises his Star Trek: The Next Generation role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in a series set 20 years after Picard's last Star Trek appearance. The retired Picard returns to active duty with a new mission and a new crew, in a slower, more character-driven story than other Trek series. In addition to Stewart, actors from other past Trek series, including Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Jeri Ryan, make appearances, as Picard struggles to find his place in a changed Starfleet that no longer reflects his values.

Seasons 1-2 of Star Trek: Picard are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

The first animated Star Trek series since the 1970s is also the first overtly comedic Trek series, focusing on a group of lower-level recruits who do all the grunt work on intergalactic voyages. Set around the end of the Next Generation/Deep Space Nine/Voyager era, Lower Decks takes place on the Cerritos, a Starfleet ship mostly assigned to minor missions. The creators combine gentle mockery with a deep love for and knowledge of Trek lore, which makes them perfect for taking the franchise down a peg.

Star Trek returns to animation again for this family-friendly series aimed at bringing in a younger audience. Like Star Trek: Voyager, Prodigy takes place in the remote Delta Quadrant, where a rowdy group of young aliens from a prison colony discover an abandoned Starfleet ship. They take control of the ship so they can escape their grim circumstances, in a harsh backwater beyond the reach of the United Federation of Planets. As they flee the colony's cruel overlord, they're trained in starship operations by a hologram of Voyager's legendary Kathryn Janeway (voiced by Kate Mulgrew).

Season 1 of Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, Strange New Worlds takes place on the Enterprise before Capt. Kirk took over, when it was led by Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). Pike is joined by younger versions of familiar characters who've served on the Enterprise, including Spock (Ethan Peck) and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). In contrast to the heavily serialized storytelling of other modern Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds focuses primarily on single-episode stories, enhancing its throwback style.

Season 1 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

  • Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

[opening narration]

Star Trek The Original Series on CBS All Access

  • Boldly go: CBS All Access (From $5.99 a month)

Every single episode of the classic Trek

It's sort of hard to overstate the impact that the original Star Trek series — aka Star Trek: The Original Series has had on the past 50-something years of culture. Not just television. Not just film. Not just books. But culture .

And while TOS only lasted three seasons (though this was back in a time in which a season would span more than 10 episodes) over less than three years, there's no mistaking its influence today. Not just in science-fiction, but in countless other genres.

But when was the last time you watched the original Kirk and Spock and Bones and Scott? And, for that matter, where can you watch the original Star Trek in the 21st Century?

The answer turns out to be fairly simple. You can watch every episode of The Original Series — and every episode of every single Star Trek series, for that matter — on CBS All Access.

You've got a couple options here, too. The basic CBS All Access plan is $5.99 a month and comes with limited commercials on most of the shows. But if you bump things up to the $9.99-a-month plan you can watch with fewer commercial interruptions.

And one other improvement over the old days is that Star Trek: The Original Series has been remastered to 1080p resolution. (That's a vast improvement over the 480i resolution used for the original broadcasts.) The audio has been improved as well, moving from a monaural output to Dolby Digital 5.1. So not only will the original Trek look better than it's ever looked, it'll sound better, too. (And if you've never heard a theremin in surround sound, well, get ready.)

CBS All Access is available on pretty much any device you own, including Android and iOS devices, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, and more.

From low-budget romps to high-energy blockbuster films,  Star Trek  has become one of the most influential sci-fi franchises of all time. While  Trek  has decades worth of TV, film, and animated iterations that might rival  Star Wars , it also has its own unique legacy and long-time, passionate cult following (and merch ).

With the release of  Star Trek : Discovery in 2017, the Trek television universe has become one of the highlights of original programming on  Paramount+ . Unlike Kevin Feige ‘s aggressive rollout of new shows for Phase Four of the  Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+,  Paramount+  has done particularly well with releasing short series over the past few years for this newest wave of  Star Trek . Helmed by Alex Kurtzman, series like  Star Trek: Lower Decks  and  Picard  have pushed the boundaries of what can be done with the universe’s canon in their first seasons so far.

Gene Roddenberry’s utopian vision of the future is almost sixty years strong. Luckily, streaming Star Trek online is easier than ever before. Almost every property, from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to Star Trek: Picard can be found on Paramount Plus. It’s also the only place you can stream new Trek, whether you’re partial to the back-to-basics approach of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds or the hilarious animated Star Trek: Lower Decks. Here’s everything you need to know to stream Star Trek online.

Where to Stream Star Trek TV Shows and Movies

A brief history of ownership .

The original Star Trek show premiered on September 8, 1966. It was produced by Desilu Productions. Desilu was later acquired by Gulf and Western in late 1967, which renamed the studio Paramount Television. Since then, Star Trek and all its properties fall under the Paramount umbrella. While many of the popular series were at one point available on services like Prime Video and Netflix (aside from a few outliers here and there), Paramount Plus is the only place to stream (almost) every piece of Star Trek media.

Paramount Plus formally launched on March 4, 2021, but the streaming service existed long before that. Before its rebranding, the platform was known as CBS All Access. It was the destination of Star Trek: Discovery , the franchise’s illustrious return to television since the abrupt cancelation of Star Trek: Enterprise in May of 2005.

Paramount Plus is essential for streaming Star Trek

As streaming services ramp up competition, Paramount Plus can proudly boast one of the best libraries of exclusive content. Paramount’s tendrils extend over countless popular properties, including shows from popular channels like Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, BET, and CBS.

Like any great streaming service, Paramount Plus is also home to tons of great originals including reality hits like RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars , action-packed series like Seal Team , and even long-awaited revivals like Beavis and Butthead . And unlike many streaming services, the price is fairly reasonable, especially if you’re looking to stream Star Trek online. There are two basic packages available:

  • Essential, $4.99 per month : This tier gives you access to the entire Paramount Plus library, which includes every Star Trek show, as well as tons of other great legacy and exclusive shows and movies. You’ll also get access to live sports like Champions League soccer, and NFL on CBS Live. The incredibly affordable price of $4.99 per month is thanks to limited ads peppered in here and there. You can save even more by subscribing for a whole year at once, for only $49.99.
  • Premium, $9.99 per month : For a few dollars more, you can upgrade to the Premium tier. Firstly, you get all the good stuff in the Essential tier. The only difference is everything you watch will be commercial-free. You can also download shows and movies for offline viewing, and get access to stream your local CBS affiliate any time you want. Like the Essential tier, if you pay for an entire year of access at once, you can save 16 percent or $99.99 for a whole year.

Of course, you don’t need to decide on a long-term commitment all at once. Paramount Plus offers one week free of full access to its streaming service.

How to stream Star Trek: Where to start

After subscribing to Paramount Plus , you’ll be able to watch Star Trek from now until Zefram Cochrane invents warp drive (2063 A.D). In fact, it’s never been a better time to be a Trekkie. Here are a few suggestions for new fans, as well as fans who have neglected the franchise—perhaps for other properties with “star” in the name .

Must-watch classic show: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

The cast of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one of the many shows to stream on Paramount Plus.

Jean Luc-Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D proved that Trek wasn’t just some ’60s-era fad. For many, especially Gen Z and Millennial sci-fi fans, Next Generation is more emblematic of the series than anything involving William Shatner. And while the show made Trek a household name again, arguably its biggest impact is serving as a seven-season preamble to the best Trek series that’s ever been: Deep Space Nine .

What is Star Trek: Deep Space Nine about?

Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) was, to put it bluntly, a terrorist. The Bajoran freedom fighter had to be. She was fighting off the fascist Cardassians, who invaded and occupied her home planet for half a century. Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) is a Starfleet commander, who lost his wife during the Borg invasion of the Federation. He is adrift without his wife and struggles to find his footing in command, and as a father.

After Bajor applies for Federation membership, these two leaders must work together, to help rebuild a society ravaged by the horrors of war, heal old wounds, and confront new enemies. They do all this while dealing with issues regarding the complexities of faith, progress, and of course, duty.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is as gritty as Star Trek gets, though it’s anything but a slog. Despite Trek being one of the few utopian pieces of sci-fi, Deep Space Nine reveals that even paradise isn’t without its flaws and hypocrisies. It still retains the usual Trek sheen, without ever becoming trite—or worse, cynical and humorless. Come for the solid, serialized sci-fi, and stay for the hilarious Ferengi episodes. (Iggy Pop even shows up at one point.)

Other Great Classic Shows: Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Enterprise, and Star Trek: The Original Series

Must-watch new show: Star Trek: Lower Decks

The cast of Star Trek: Lower Decks, one of the many shows to stream on Paramount Plus.

Starting in 2017, Trek returned to TV after more than a decade of absence with Star Trek: Discovery. Discovery takes place a decade before the start of the original series and was a bit scattered. It did, however, make new fans thirsty for space travel after three blockbuster movies starring Chris Pine. But for the obsessive Trek fans who have warp cores and Klingon drinking songs on the brain, Star Trek: Lower Decks isn’t just a hilarious sci-fi romp—it’s a veritable love letter to Trek.

What is Star Trek: Lower Decks about?

Kirk. Picard. Janeway: the names of these Starfleet captains are seared into history. But where would these leaders of the legend be without their faithful crews? And no, I don’t mean the second, third, or even fifth in command. (Or hell, anyone that’s even been near the bridge.) Lower Decks is a show for the underdog, starring the brave Starfleet members that make sure ships run on time no matter the warp factor.

Beckett Mariner is one of many ensigns aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos, a humble, but proud California -class ship in the Federation fleet. Mariner is such a troublemaker, she’s been demoted more than once, but her sense of adventure inspires the loyalty of many, including the straight-laced dreamer Brad Boimler.

Because Lower Decks is animated, stories aren’t constrained by production budgets. Being freed from these considerations has already resulted in amazing and hilarious adventures. The series is rife with cameos from Trek veterans such as John De Lancie (Q), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Riker), and even Alice Krige (Borg Queen). The season 3 episode “Hear All, Trust Nothing,” was so full of cameos, it practically served as a Deep Space Nine reunion.

Other Great New Shows: Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Picard

Where to stream Star Trek movies

For a hot second, only a few Star Trek movies were available to stream online. Every single one from “the one with the whales” to Star Trek Beyond was conveniently available on the same streaming platform as the rest of the Roddenberry canon.

But in today’s tumultuous streaming climate, nothing can ever be too easy for subscribers. Licenses for franchises bounce around like crazy, and even the utopian-minded Star Trek isn’t safe from this. Luckily, after spending some time in the wilderness, the 10 movies spanning the original series and Next Generation casts are now available on HBO Max . For those who haven’t jumped onto one of the best streaming services going, there are two packages to choose from.

  • With Ads, $9.99 per month : This tier gives you complete access to the vast HBO Max library, which includes popular brands like Cartoon Network, TCM, DC Comics, Studio Ghibli, and now, 10 Star Trek films. There are also must-watch originals including Peacemaker, House of the Dragon , and Pretty Little Liars, as well as full access to legendary legacy shows including Deadwood, Sopranos, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Of course, this budget offering comes with a catch: you will have to watch the occasional ad. If you pay for a year’s subscription all at once it will only be $69.99, which is a savings of 40 percent compared to a month-to-month subscription.
  • Ad-Free, $14.99 per month : This tier provides access to everything in the “With Ads” tier, but without a single commercial to sit through. Additionally, you can download shows for offline viewing via apps available on smart devices to watch on the go. You also get access to 4K content when available, especially with additions to the ever-growing library. Like the previous, more affordable tier, you can save 40 percent by paying for a yearly subscription for $104.99.

The first two films from the ’09 reboot are available to stream on Paramount Plus. The outlier from both of these services is Star Trek: Beyond, which is only available through AMC. However, you can also rent or buy it via Amazon Prime Video.

Star Trek Day 2023 To Feature Streaming Special And ‘Lower Decks’ Theater Screenings

Ha, “Federation Square” in Melbourne. I admit to thinking of Star Trek when I visited Melbourne a few years ago. Had a kangaroo steak at an excellent restaurant on the Square.

Er, I think you’ve misread the time. The official announcement says “12:00 pm PT/3:00 pm ET,” meaning that it starts at noon Pacific time and 3 p.m. Eastern time. It’s only supposed to last for two hours, though, so it’s not supposed to go until 3:00 p.m. Pacific time.

Sounds like fun!

I guess this will be a yearly thing now which will be great to celebrate Star Trek in all its glory. I really loved last years event and expect to get a few trailers and other surprises.

My only pet peeve is how do you have the Picard panel and yet not have a single TNG cast member as part of the event, including Patrick Stewart himself? At comic con it was at least him and Gates McFadden but I thought the entire gang would be here for this and would easily be the biggest panel of the event. Oh well!

But happy Kate Mulgrew will be there (IIRC wasn’t there at last year’s event) and good to know there will be a Nichelle Nichols tribute!

Trek XIV panel. with Pine, Shatner, Stewart, Bana, Hemsworth, Eve, Cranston

Maybe in a mirror universe somewhere….

This is the mirror universe

Interesting, I never figured the Empire would be so….bland.

That would explain a lot.

Wish there were some news they could share about the movie. Everything is moving except this and maybe Section 31 show.

You would think a movie that is suppose to be filming ‘end of this year’ would, you know, make Star Trek day a big announcement event about it with things like maybe a title, 1 or 2 of the cast members there to hype it and remind people who they are again, when and where it will start shooting (which would have to be VERY soon i they want to keep thee 2023 deadline), maybe big casting news of who is playing the obligatory ubervillain etc, etc, etc.

Instead, more dead silence per usual. We have not heard anything. NOTHING! No casting rumors, update about the script, confirmation if the entire old cast signed up, possibility of location shoots, director or writer throwing out story hints, budget figures, etc. But there is NONE of that for a movie that is suppose to be out 16 months from now. It’s like they forgotten about it because there seems to be zero movement.

Paramount just seems at a loss where the film franchise is going and maybe there is still hope they will get this thing going soon. But if this one is forever stalled too as the others, I don’t think it will shock anyone at this point.

There isn’t going to be a movie. Atleast not in 2023 or 2024.

That’s what I was alluding to obviously, at least not in 2023. There is still a possibility for 2024 but even then the clock is ticking if you want to position your movie for a certain week as those are getting filled in by other studios now. So if 2023 is really a wash, seem like they should just face reality and make a new date sooner than later.

But maybe t’s smart to just push it off to 2025 if they want to start anew and a different direction if whatever is stalling them on this movie can’t get worked out. At this point, it really doesn’t matter lol.

2023 is seven years between features, nine for a 2025 release. It does open the possibility that by staying in the Kelvin universe, there’s opportunity to explore the Trek universe in a way different from the TOS movies. Stay tuned….

I’m not saying that will happen obviously but maybe it should? But something that STICKS this time and not just keep moving or quietly cancel it like all the other projects.

Again at this point, really, what does it matter? Once we reached the 5 year mark and you still care about these movies, then you will probably care in another 3-5 years as well. And why wait 7 years just to rush something to production now?? Because if they tried to release something for 2023 now, it’s going to feel rushed.

You know my thoughts, I think they are taking a huge chance on any movie right now and they probably feel the exact same way. But maybe if they wait it out for a few more years, the TV shows will feel a bit more mundane by then, maybe people will be generally excited for another movie in the fanbase; because at the moment it still doesn’t feel that way at all to me. Sure many will see it, but there isn’t any excitement or anticipation about them anymore and that must worry Paramount.

And yeah you can maybe do something drastically different in the Kelvin universe by then too. Something that separates it from the Prime universe that will get people to get excited for it again. Right now, the Kelvin universe just feels so far in the background now that the Prime universe is back with all the legacy characters fans have missed.

But whose fault is that? ;)

i think that the movie has been shelved and paramount just does not want to lose fans over constantly being jerked around with false hope. Frankly I am not the fan that i once was. i don’t like the TV Star Trek that is on today. I personally did like the Kelvin films and would like to see another but my interest is definitely waning with all of their rhetoric and then silence. Fans deserve better.

Definitely a possibility. I still want to be more optimistic and that they are trying to figure something out, but 2+2 is just not adding up here. On one hand the argument (or spin) is that nothing is happening because they are trying to clear the actors schedules before they announce a starting date. OK, fine. But then the actors themselves, at least Pine, Quinto and Urban have said they have heard nothing, ie, no one has called them to even work out any scheduling or anything. Kind of weird when you made it adamant you wanted a new movie by next year.

But I agree with you, fans do deserve better. And really sorry you’re not enjoying any of the new shows. For me, Star Trek really belongs on TV versus the cinema, but there was a time we had both of them running together, at least from 1989 through 2002. I would love to see that time again.

But man how does this discussion keep being brought up lol. This thread has nothing to do with the Kelvin movies, but then I guess that’s the sad point. It’s about Star Trek day, the new films SHOULD be a part of that like all the shows are but once again completely ignored. It’s funny a decade ago some fans actually thought the Kelvin universe would be driving force of the franchise from here on out and the Prime universe would be part of a bygone era. Today its all about the Prime universe again and the Kelvin is lucky it can just get a shout out by someone at an anniversary event. ;)

No movie yet, so no news. It is what it is.

Unfortunately, we don’t get news on this movie any more than we get news on the Section 31 show :(

Those annual events for Star Trek Day and First Contact Day are a true gift.

I wish they will someday release streaming movies twice a year, on those two days… Trekbusters on P+

Yes and let’s start the first film with the NX-01 Enterprise crew during the Romulan war! That would certainly get my attention!

Five second delay on those panels, I’m guessing….

“Paramount is doing a streaming event honoring the anniversary of the launch of the original Star Trek television series on September 8, 1966.”

That should be noted as “in the US”.

Star Trek actually had its television premiere on Sep 6. For at least the first season, it aired 2 days earlier on CTV in Canada.

Hoping to get at least some updates on Section 31 🤞

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Sonequa Martin-Green in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Anson Mount as Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well.

Hologram Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

HBO Max - Star Trek, Harry Potter Movies

The library shuffle among streaming services continues. HBO Max next month is getting all 10 of the original “ Star Trek ” movies — after they left Paramount+ — and once again will offer all of the first eight movies in the Warner Bros. “ Harry Potter ” series.

Paramount+ in November 2021 launched every Star Trek movie, and the service is also the exclusive streaming home of every Star Trek TV show ever made. However, as of Oct. 1, 2022, the 10 original films were no longer available.

Meanwhile, the Wizarding World will be coming back to HBO Max, with the eight Harry Potter magically reappearing on the streamer Nov. 1 (after they most recently left the platform Aug. 31 ). The titles have bounced back and forth between HBO Max and NBCUniversal’s Peacock for several years, with different windowing agreements between the companies — demonstrating the power of fan-favorite film franchises to retain subscribers.

Also coming to HBO Max in November: “Titans” Season 4 (Nov. 3), following the young heroes in the DC Universe as they battle a supernatural cult in Metropolis on their way back to San Francisco; “Magnolia Tables With Joanna Gaines” (Nov. 4); Season 2 of original series “The Sex Lives of College Girls” (Nov. 17); “Shaq” (Nov. 23), a docu-series about how basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal became a cultural icon; and documentary film “Love, Lizzo” (Nov. 24), which follows the groundbreaking singer’s journey from her humble beginnings to her meteoric rise.

In addition, new holiday films coming exclusively to HBO Max this November include “A Christmas Story Christmas” (Nov. 17), which follows Ralphie, now an adult, who returns to the house on Cleveland Street to give his friends a magical Christmas; “Holiday Harmony” (Nov. 24), about a singer-songwriter traveling cross country in hopes of making it big and ends up taking on a group of misfit kids hoping to perform in a Christmas Eve gala; and “A Christmas Mystery” (Nov. 24), following a group of intrepid kids trying to solve the case of why Santa’s magical jingle bells disappeared.

The new titles coming to HBO Max in November 2022 come after Warner Bros. Discovery has recently made content cutbacks to the service to get streaming-content payment obligations for underperforming titles off its books, including multiple films and series and 200 older “Sesame Street” episodes .

How Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Makes the Original Series Feel Different

The latest iteration of Star Trek is set before the 1966 original series but gives the entire saga extra depth.

  • Paramount+ is the ultimate streaming platform for both old and new Star Trek fans, with a wide range of past and present iterations of the franchise available to watch.
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows the original captain of the USS Enterprise, Christopher Pike, and his team as they explore the galaxy and aid others in the name of The Federation.
  • The show delves deeper into the origins and character development of classic Star Trek characters like Pike, Spock, and Una, providing viewers with a fresh perspective on their motivations and choices. The set design and villains in Strange New Worlds have also been upgraded and improved compared to previous iterations.

There is no greater streaming platform for old and new Trekkies like Paramount+. Between the initial three-season Star Trek that premiered in 1966 (starring William Shatner as well as the late but great Leonard Nimoy) to Star Trek: The Next Generation, which brought the final frontier to a whole new generation of fans, there are also many other renditions available to watch from the past, like Deep Space Nine , Voyager , and Enterprise .

The science fiction franchise has been continuously going strong for almost 60 years and has no signs of stopping with the latest iteration, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Originally premiering in May 2022, this series is dedicated to following one of the more underrated captains of the USS Enterprise, Christopher Pike, as he and his team scour the galaxy, aiding those in the name of The Federation.

Christopher Pike in Star Trek

Even a casual fan of Star Trek knows there have been attempts to portray this same character in the past – but not on an intimate level. While the TOS ( The Original Series ) does a memorable job of creating a lengthy origin story (and a morbid fate), any potential emphasis towards this path for Pike was downplayed by the alternate events that take place in 2009's Star Trek (and its sequel).

Starting from the events of Star Trek: Discovery (the series before Strange New Worlds ), the captain is set on a more authentic path, with his future in these modern shows connecting to the events that take place in the eleventh and twelfth episodes of TOS called “ The Menagerie. ” While this aspect warrants a watch from Star Trek fans due to its dedication to original lore, there are also several ways that Strange New Worlds ambitiously evolves its source material regarding character dynamics and storytelling trademarks. Let’s look at these and see how this new show adds to the Gene Roddenberry original.

Characters With a Deeper Purpose in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star trek: strange new worlds.

The one tether that older fans of the franchise will latch on to is the reintroduction of classic characters like Spock, Pike himself, and Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley (Number One). The stories behind these names are more fleshed out than ever in Strange New Worlds and thus provide more clarity as to why they are the way they are. These origin stories will help viewers to see the TOS with brand-new eyes. We see a Pike – who used to be soft and warm – turn into a more hardened and emotionally charged being because of the premonition he received in the preceding series. You could say this is why he makes the choices he does in that aforementioned two-part saga. He is more ready than ever to accomplish the mission at hand while he still can.

Even though this conflict torments him, viewers see Spock torn between his duties on the USS Enterprise and his romantic partner, T’Pring. There are even sequences when he is fully human and human desires overwhelm him. Unlike the TOS , this 2022 show explores and highlights the Vulcan/earthling clash of backgrounds. Last but not least, the revelations about Una surprisingly come to a tipping point, and her struggle for acceptance helps viewers appreciate her more in The Original Series . Suffice it to say, the work on character depth helps viewers see these names in a light that was not there before this series.

Star Trek: 10 Facts About Spock You Probably Didn’t Know (Or Forgot)

Upgrading the set and villains of star trek.

Of course, there's also the obvious production value improvement and how that factors into Strange New Worlds . In 1966, the interior shots of the Enterprise were enough to draw viewers in, but these days, it’s not that impressive and pulls at sci-fi nostalgia . The bridge's design was compact, and the stations lacked individualism, with each just being a computer monitor.

For the Star Trek franchise, time has proven to be a gift. With technological and cinematic advancements, the central location sprawls widely enough to cement the feeling that you are actually on a ship. Not only that, but the terminals curve, have futuristic-looking touch screens, and are bound by colorful keys and knobs. The radars look like they are actually tracking movement. The aesthetics are encompassing and refreshing, even more so than Star Trek: Discovery .

How Picard’s New Borg Queen Fits Into the Larger Picture

Let’s not forget about the most fearsome villains in Strange New Worlds : The Gorn . While The Borg and Khan Noonien Singh (even his name will cause a chill in some) were good, this humanoid reptilian species has been given a new, vile life in this show. They were never close to being terrifying in TOS (even comical), but their renewed presence strikes intense fear into our characters this time around. They have tremendous speed and agility, but most of all, these creatures multiply similarly to Xenomorphs from Aliens , bursting from the inside out of those sprayed with their venom.

With all the changes made to carve out its own space (whether about set design or surrounding fan-favorite characters), this series has quickly become a hit show for Star Trek fans worldwide. With a third season confirmed to be in the works, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is available to stream on Paramount+.

How to Watch Star Trek in Order: The Complete Series Timeline

The full star trek timeline, explained..

How to Watch Star Trek in Order: The Complete Series Timeline - IGN Image

Ever since 1966’s premiere of the first episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, the entertainment world has never been the same. This franchise that has boldly gone where no property has gone before has captured the hearts and minds of millions around the world and has grown into a space-faring empire of sorts filled with multiple shows, feature length films, comics, merchandise, and so much more. That being said, the amount of Star Trek out in the world can make it tough to know exactly how to watch everything it offers in either chronological or release order so you don’t miss a thing. To help make things easier for you, we’ve created this guide to break down everything you need to know about engaging with this Star Trek journey.

It used to be a bit trickier to track down all the Star Trek shows and movies you’d need to watch to catch up, but Paramount+ has made it a whole lot easier as it has become the home of nearly all the past, present and future Star Trek entries.

So, without further ado, come with us into the final frontier and learn how you can become all caught up with the adventures of Kirk, Picard, Janeway, Sisko, Spock, Pike, Archer, Burnham, and all the others that have made Star Trek so special over the past 56 years.

And, in case you're worried, everything below is a mostly spoiler-free chronological timeline that will not ruin any of any major plot points of anything further on in the timeline. So, you can use this guide as a handy way to catch up without ruining much of the surprise of what’s to come on your adventure! If you’d prefer to watch everything Star Trek as it was released, you’ll find that list below as well!

How to Watch Star Trek in Chronological Order

  • How to Watch Star Trek by Release Order

1. Star Trek: Enterprise (2151-2155)

Star Trek: Enterprise is the earliest entry on our list as it takes place a hundred years before the adventures of Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew of Star Trek: The Original Series. The show aired from 2001 to 2005 and starred Scott Bakula as Jonathan Archer, the captain of the Enterprise NX-01. This version of the Enterprise was actually Earth’s first starship that was able to reach warp five.

While the show had its ups and downs, it included a fascinating look at a crew without some of the advanced tech we see in other Star Trek shows, the first contact with various alien species we know and love from the Star Trek universe, and more.

2. Star Trek: Discovery: Seasons 1 and 2 (2256-2258)

star trek original series streaming 2022

This is where things get a little bit tricky, as the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery take place before Star Trek: The Original Series but Seasons 3 and 4 take us boldly to a place we’ve not gone before. We won’t spoil why that’s the case here, but it’s important to note if you want to watch Star Trek in order, you’ll have to do a bit of jumping around from series to movie to series.

As for what Star Trek: Discovery is, it's set the decade before the original and stars Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham, a Starfleet Commander who accidentally helps start a war between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. She gets court-martialed and stripped of her rank following these events and is reassigned to the U.S.S Discovery.

3. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2259-TBD)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds also begins before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series and is set up by Star Trek: Discovery as its captain, Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike, makes an appearance in its second season. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Pike first appeared in the original failed pilot episode “The Cage” of Star Trek: The Original Series and would later become James T. Kirk’s predecessor after the original actor, Jefferey Hunter, backed out of the show.

Fast forward all these years later and now we get to learn more about the story of Christopher Pike and many other familiar faces from The Original Series alongside new characters. It’s made even more special as the ship the crew uses is the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, the very same that would soon call Kirk its captain.

4. Star Trek: The Original Series (2265-2269)

star trek original series streaming 2022

The fourth Star Trek series or movie you should watch in the order is the one that started it all - Star Trek: The Original Series . Created by Gene Roddenberry, this first Star Trek entry would kick off a chain reaction that would end up creating one of the most beloved IPs of all time. However, it almost never made it to that legendary status as its low ratings led to a cancellation order after just three seasons that aired from 1966 to 1969. Luckily, it found great popularity after that and built the foundation for all the Star Trek stories we have today.

Star Trek: The Original Series starred William Shatner as James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock, but the rest of the crew would go on to become nearly as iconic as they were. As for what the show was about? Well, we think Kirk said it best during each episode’s opening credits;

“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise . Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

5. Star Trek: The Animated Series (2269-2270)

While Star Trek: The Original Series may have been canceled after just three seasons, its popularity only grew, especially with the help of syndication. Following this welcome development, Gene Roddenberry decided he wanted to continue the adventures of the crew of the Enterprise NCC-1701 in animated form, and he brought back many of the original characters and the actors behind them for another go.

Star Trek: The Animated Series lasted for two seasons from 1973 to 1974 and told even more stories of the Enterprise and its adventures throughout the Milky Way galaxy.

6. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (2270s)

star trek original series streaming 2022

The first Star Trek film was a very big deal as it brought back the crew of Star Trek: The Original Series after the show was canceled in 1969 after just three seasons. However, even it had a rough road to theaters as Roddenberry initially failed to convince Paramount Pictures it was worth it in 1975. Luckily, the success of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and other factors helped finally convince those in power to make the movie and abandon the plans for a new television series called Star Trek: Phase II, which also would have continued the original story.

In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, James T. Kirk was now an Admiral in Starfleet, and certain events involving a mysterious alien cloud of energy called V’Ger cause him to retake control of a refitted version of the U.S.S. Enterprise with many familiar faces in tow.

7. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (2285)

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry had a sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture written, but Paramount turned it down after the reception to that first film was not what the studio had hoped for. In turn, Paramount removed him from the production and brought in Harve Bennett and Jack B. Sowards to write the script and Nicholas Meyer to direct the film.

The studio’s decision proved to be a successful one as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is considered by many, including IGN, to be the best Star Trek film. As for the story, it followed the battle between Admiral James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise vs. Ricardo Montalban’ Khan Noonien Singh. Khan is a genetically engineered superhuman and he and his people were exiled by Kirk on a remote planet in the episode ‘Space Seed’ from the original series. In this second film, after being stranded for 15 years, Khan wants revenge.

8. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (2285)

star trek original series streaming 2022

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock continues the story that began in Wrath of Khan and deals with the aftermath of Spock’s death. While many on the U.S.S. Enterprise thought that was the end for their science officer, Kirk learns that Spock’s spirit/katra is actually living inside the mind of DeForest Kelley’s Dr. McCoy, who has been acting strange ever since the death of his friend. What follows is an adventure that includes a stolen U.S.S. Enterprise, a visit from Spock’s father Sarek, a run-in with Klingons, and so much more.

9. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (2286 and 1986)

While it is undoubtedly great that Kirk and his crew saved Spock, it apparently wasn’t great enough to avoid the consequences that follow stealing and then losing the Enterprise. On their way to answer for their charges, the former crew of the Enterprise discover a threat to Earth that, without spoiling anything, causes them to go back in time to save everything they love. The Voyage Home is a big departure from the previous films as, instead of space, we spend most of our time in 1986’s San Francisco.

10. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (2287)

star trek original series streaming 2022

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier once again brings back our favorite heroes from Star Trek: The Original Series, but it’s often regarded as one of the weakest films starring Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc. In this adventure, our crew’s shore leave gets interrupted as they are tasked with going up against the Vulcan Sybok, who himself is on the hunt for God in the middle of the galaxy.

11. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (2293)

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is the final movie starring the entire cast of Star Trek: The Original Series, and it puts the Klingons front and center. After a mining catastrophe destroys the Klingon moon of Praxis and threatens the Klingon’s homeworld, Klingon Chancellor Gorkon is forced to abandon his species' love of war in an effort to seek peace with the Federation. What follows is an adventure that calls back to the fall of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall and serves as a wonderful send-off to characters we’ve come to know and love since 1966, even though some will thankfully appear in future installments.

12. Star Trek: The Next Generation (2364-2370)

star trek original series streaming 2022

After you make it through all six of the Star Trek: The Original Series movies, it’s time to start what many consider the best Star Trek series of all time - Star Trek: The Next Generation . The series, which starred Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, ran from 1987 through 1994 with 178 episodes over seven seasons.

There are so many iconic characters and moments in The Next Generation, including William Riker, Data, Worf, Geordi La Forge, Deanna Troi, and Dr. Beverly Crusher, and many of these beloved faces would return for Star Trek: Picard, which served as a continuation of this story.

While we are once again on the U.S.S. Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, this story takes place a century after the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. However, there may just be a few familiar faces that pop up from time to time.

13. Star Trek Generations (2293)

While Star Trek Generations is the first film featuring the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew, it also features a team-up that many had dreamed of for years and years between Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Captain James T. Kirk.

Our heroes are facing off against an El-Aurian named Dr. Tolian Soran, who will do whatever is necessary to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. Without spoiling anything, these events lead to a meeting with these two legendary captains and a heartfelt-at-times send-off to The Original Series, even though not every character returned that we wished could have.

14. Star Trek: First Contact (2373)

star trek original series streaming 2022

Star Trek: First Contact was not only the second film featuring the crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation, but it also served as the motion picture directorial debut for William Riker actor Jonathan Frakes. In this film, the terrifying Borg take center stage and force our heroes to travel back in time to stop them from conquering Earth and assimilating the entire human race.

This movie picks up on the continuing trauma caused by Jean-Luc Picard getting assimilated in the series and becoming Locutus of Borg, and we are also treated to the first warp flight in Star Trek’s history, a shout-out to Deep Space Nine, and more.

15. Star Trek: Insurrection (2375)

Star Trek: Insurrection, which unfortunately ranked last on our list of the best Star Trek movies, is the third film starring the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew and followed a story involving an alien race that lives on a planet with more-or-less makes them invincible due to its rejuvenating properties. This alien race, known as the Ba’Ku, are being threatened by not only another alien race called the Son’a, but also the Federation. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew disobey Federation orders in hopes to save the peaceful Ba’Ku, and while it sounds like an interesting premise, many said it felt too much like an extended episode of the series instead of a big blockbuster film.

16. Star Trek: Nemesis (2379)

star trek original series streaming 2022

The final Star Trek: The Next Generation movie is Star Trek: Nemesis , and it also isn’t looked at as one of the best. There are bright parts in the film, including Tom Hardy’s Shinzon who is first thought to be a Romulan praetor before it’s revealed he is a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, but it also features a lot of retreaded ground. There are some great moments between our favorite TNG characters, but it’s not quite the goodbye many had hoped for. Luckily, this won’t be the last we’ll see of them.

17. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (2369-2375)

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the fourth Star Trek series and it ran from 1993 to 1999 with 176 episodes over seven seasons. Deep Space Nine was also the first Star Trek series to be created without the direct involvement of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, but instead with Rick Berman and Michael Piller. Furthermore, it was the first series to begin when another Star Trek Series - The Next Generation - was still on the air.

The connections between The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine don’t end there, as there were a ton of callbacks to TNG in Deep Space Nine, and characters like Worf and Miles O’Brien played a big part in the series. Other TNG characters popped up from time to time, including Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and certain Deep Space Nine characters also showed their faces in TNG.

Deep Space Nine was a big departure from the Star Trek series that came before, as it not only took place mostly on a space station - the titular Deep Space Nine - but it was the first to star an African American as its central character in Avery Brooks’ Captain Benjamin Sisko.

Deep Space Nine was located in a very interesting part of the Milky Way Galaxy as it was right next to a wormhole, and the series was also filled with conflict between the Cardassians and Bajorans, the war between the Federation and the Dominion, and much more.

18. Star Trek: Voyager (2371-2378)

star trek original series streaming 2022

Star Trek: Voyager is the fifth Star Trek series and it ran from 1995 to 2001 with 172 episodes over seven seasons. Star Trek: Voyager begins its journey at Deep Space Nine, and then it follows the tale of Kate Mulgrew’s Captain Kathryn Janeway (the first female leading character in Star Trek history!) and her crew getting lost and stranded in the faraway Delta Quadrant.

The episodes and adventures that follow all see the team fighting for one goal: getting home. Being so far away from the Alpha Quadrant we were so used to letting Star Trek be very creative in its storytelling and give us situations and alien races we’d never encountered before.

That doesn’t mean it was all unfamiliar, however, as the Borg became a huge threat in the later seasons. It’s a good thing too, as that led to the introduction of Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine, a character who would continue on to appear in Star Trek: Picard and become a fan favorite.

19. Star Trek: Lower Decks (2380-TBD)

Star Trek: Lower Decks debuted in 2020 and was the first animated series to make it to air since 1973’s Star Trek: The Animated Series. Alongside having that feather in its cap, it also sets itself apart by choosing to focus more on the lower lever crew instead of the captain and senior staff.

This leads to many fun adventures that may not be as high stakes as the other stories, but are no less entertaining. There have already been three seasons of Star Trek: Lower Decks, and the fourth season is set to arrive later this summer.

The series is also worth a watch as it is having a crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds that will mix the worlds of live-action and animation.

20. Star Trek: Prodigy (2383-TBD)

Star Trek: Prodigy was the first fully 3D animated Star Trek series ever and told a story that began five years after the U.S.S. Voyager found its way back home to Earth. In this series, which was aimed for kids, a group of young aliens find an abandoned Starfleet ship called the U.S.S. Protostar and attempt to make it to Starfleet and the Alpha Quadrant from the Delta Quadrant.

Voyager fans will be delighted to know that Kate Mulgrew returns as Kathryn Janeway in this animated series, but not only as herself. She is also an Emergency Training Holographic Advisor that was based on the likeness of the former captain of the U.S.S. Voyager.

The second season of Star Trek: Prodigy was set to arrive later this year, but it was not only canceled in June, but also removed from Paramount+. There is still hope this show may find a second life on another streaming service or network.

21. Star Trek: Picard (2399-2402)

star trek original series streaming 2022

Star Trek: Picard is the… well… next generation of Star Trek: The Next Generation as it brings back not only Partick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard, but also many of his former crew members from the beloved series. The story is set 20 years after the events of Star Trek Nemesis and we find Picard retired from Starfleet and living at his family’s vineyard in France.

Without spoiling anything, certain events get one of our favorite captains back to work and take him on an adventure through space and time over three seasons and 30 episodes.

The show had its ups and downs, but the third season, in our opinion, stuck the landing and gave us an “emotional, exciting, and ultimately fun journey for Jean-Luc and his family - both old and new - that gives the character the send-off that he has long deserved.”

22. Star Trek: Discovery: Seasons 3 and 4 (3188-TBD)

While Star Trek: Discovery begins around 10 years before Star Trek: The Original Series, the show jumps more than 900 years into the future into the 32nd Century following the events of the second season. The Federation is not in great shape and Captain Michael Burnham and her crew work to bring it back to what it once was.

Star Trek: Discovery is set to end after the upcoming fifth season, which will debut on Paramount+ in 2024.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ EPs Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise Discuss Franchise Diversity and Season Finale | EUR Video Exclusive

 'Star Trek: Discovery'

* In an exclusive interview, we chatted with executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise about “Star Trek: Discovery’s” highly anticipated fifth and final season.

As the visionary minds behind the series, Kurtzman and Paradise shared insights into the creative process, the evolution of beloved characters, and what fans can expect from this epic conclusion to the Discovery journey.

The series finale finds Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) “and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well … dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it,” per the official synopsis.

During our exclusive conversation with Martin-Green , she discussed her emotional journey amid the final season.

“I feel grateful. I feel grateful that we were able to tell the story that we did over the course of the entire show, and then especially how we ended,” Martin-Green shared with EUR exclusively. “I think that people will be moved. I think they’ll be touched, I think they’ll be satisfied, and I think that they will be left with hope. It’ll be the sort of final fragrance that they take in on the way out.”

“Michelle and I were co-showrunners for a long time, but she really deserves the credit for the last two seasons. She’s been amazing, amazing,” Kurtzman told us.

“I think that in our time together, we’ve talked so much about where we wanted to take our characters, and every season isn’t just sort of the discovery of a new world,” Kurtzman continued. “It’s the discovery… What the people themselves are discovering. I think we ask a really sort of huge question in this last season, which is, where do we come from? “It feels like a very fitting idea for the final season.”

The “Star Trek” fan base is famously passionate and diverse. We asked the EP’s how crucial it was to balance honoring its rich history and introducing new elements to keep the series fresh and relevant.

“Both of those things are hugely important,” Paradise stated. “It’s every iteration of Star Trek . To be Star Trek it has to honor where it all began. And fortunately, Gene Roddenberry set a template that is a wonderful template to follow, a diverse cast, these wonderful adventures, an underlying feeling of optimism and hope, and that we can overcome any challenge if we do it together,”  Paradise continued. “And action, adventure and fun and humor. And then of course, in our time, we want to see … what areas can we push things even further? What kinds of characters can we bring in, what kinds of stories we can tell. All of course, honoring where this all comes from and making sure it feels part of the Star Trek universe.”

 'Star Trek: Discovery'

The “Star Trek: Discovery” season five cast members include Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker), Blu del Barrio (Adira) and Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner). Season five also features recurring guest stars Elias Toufexis (L’ak) and Eve Harlow (Moll), per the release.

The fifth and final season premieres on April 4, 2024, exclusively on Paramount+.

“ Star Trek : Discovery,” the flagship series of Paramount+ ‘s “Star Trek” universe, is heading toward its ending. The series, which premiered in 2017, will premiere its fifth and final season on April 4, closing the book on the adventures of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew.

Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, “Discovery” was a prequel to the groundbreaking original 1966 “Star Trek” series, taking place a decade before the adventures of Captain Kirk, Spock, and the other iconic characters — before then jumping ahead in time to the 32nd century. The series followed Burnham, initially a science specialist and officer aboard the USS Discovery, as she adventured with the crew on missions led by a rotating series of captains, including Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs), and Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) before ultimately getting promoted to commander of the ship by the third season. Since the Season 2 finale, the Discovery, and the show, has jumped far ahead of time and now takes place in the 32nd century, where Burnham and the crew have worked to rebuild the Federation following the cataclysmic “Burn” event. Season 5 sees Burnham go on one last mission through the galaxy to uncover an ancient artifact with a mysterious power. Martin-Green leads the cast of “Discovery,” which also includes Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz , David Ajala, Blu del Barrio, and Callum Keith Rennie. Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise co-showrun the series, and executive produce with Martin-Green, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth. CBS Studios produces the series in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

The first two episodes of “ Star Trek: Discovery ” season five will debut on Paramount+ starting April 4. The remainder of the 10-episode season will stream weekly on Thursdays, and the series finale will air on May 30. Watch the preview clip below.

Will ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Continue After Series Finale? EP Teases Possibility

T he longest-running  Star Trek series on Paramount+ is coming to an end with the upcoming fifth season (premiering with the first two episodes on Thursday, April 4). But of course as tends to be the case when any show ends (especially now), we have to wonder what the chances are of Discovery continuing in any way, whether it’s a revival, a movie, a spinoff, or characters appearing on another  Trek show. TV Insider asked just that question when speaking with executive producer Alex Kurtzman ahead of  Discovery ‘s final episodes.

“I think the chances are good,” the EP tells us, but when pressed if there have been any talks about anything, only says, “I’m not going to spoil anything for you.”

Of course we immediately think of Mary Wiseman ‘s Sylvie Tilly, who left the U.S.S. Discovery and has been teaching at Starfleet Academy but does rejoin her former crew during the final season, given Paramount+’s upcoming Star Trek show. The streaming service ordered Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to series in March 2023. Kurtzman serves as executive producer and co-showrunner, alongside Noga Landau, on it.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will follow a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Whether or not Tilly could be part of that,  Discovery Season 5 is about her figuring out what the future holds. Joining the crew on this mission then (presumably) returning to teaching “actually provides a very cool opportunity for her both to come back to Discovery where she started this journey and to be there as a person who stepped away and has her own thing going on right now,” says Wiseman. “I think that’s really empowering.”

The 25 Best Paramount+ Original Series, Ranked

It also gives her character the chance to evaluate some things going on in her current situation. “I also think that she’s facing some problems at Starfleet Academy that she needs a little distance and perspective from,” Wiseman continues. “So I think it serves her really well and she’s happy to be there to show up for Michael [Sonequa Martin-Green] and also to use the opportunity to get some thinking done.”

Tv review: 'star trek: discovery' ends its disappointing voyage.

I have a soft spot for the original "Star Trek" series and believe "The Wrath of Khan" is a genuine classic. "Strange New Worlds," which debuted in 2022, is one of the best adventures in the franchise's history. But I'm no Trekkie. My attempts at a Vulcan salute would probably be interpreted as a gang sign.

So maybe a die-hard fan could explain to me why "Star Trek: Discovery" was such a hit. The series, which starts streaming its fifth and final season Thursday on Paramount+, never tries to wrestle the moral dilemmas with the same gusto that its predecessors did. Capt. Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) takes her cues from James Bond instead of James Kirk, never missing an opportunity to deliver a quip. There's more onboard romance on a "Love Boat" cruise. And the plot in the final episodes seems like a rip-off from "The Avengers," with the rather bland crew racing across the galaxy to locate puzzle pieces.

There are some clever references to past series during these last 10 episodes, but they're reminders that "Discovery" was never in their league. Let's hope the next "Trek" mission is a little more enterprising.

Those elementary school instruments are even more annoying when the San Francisco audience joins in. Let's hope Attell keeps the music to a minimum when he appears at Treasure Island Casino on April 26. Netflix

But this movie shines when it focuses on the off-the-field interplay among the underdog players. Netflix
