Going off to college or university can be an exciting time of life, with many new experiences to be had and new places to explore.

For those who plan to travel during school — be it for a study abroad program, an alternative spring break, a fun trip with friends or just to head home during school breaks — the cost of flying can be prohibitive. However, a number of airlines offer special deals on student flights to make travel more accessible.

Here is a list of airlines that offer student flight discounts for young people traveling around North America and beyond.

Instead of offering discounts on individual tickets, Air Canada offers a Student Flight Pass for students traveling frequently within the Americas. It also offers an International Student Flight Pass for those planning to travel frequently with more distant destinations.

You can either buy a pass outright or pay it off over nine months (with interest). The pass, coupled with your Aeroplan frequent flyer account number, scores you four to six flight credits (depending on the destination) to use over a specified amount of time, usually 12-15 months. You will have to choose a specific zone in which to fly (like the Western U.S., Alberta or Brazil).

One credit is valid for one one-way flight.

Make sure the pass covers travel to and from your preferred destinations. You will need to plan to fly with Air Canada at least as many times as your pass is good for or the investment won’t be worth it.

You have to be a student in one of the airline’s participating regions (which includes the U.S. and Canada) and traveling out of specific airports to take advantage of Cathay Pacific’s student flight discounts.

Eligible student travelers will:

Get access to exclusive fares to some destinations and select fare categories.

An extra baggage allowance.

Free flight changes for Flex fare classes.

Exclusive rates for Light and Essential classes.

The discount is good for one-way and round-trip flights to specific destinations, plus it can be used to book a seat in economy, economy plus or business class.

Just remember to include your Cathay number on your booking, use the relevant discount code listed online and bring a valid form of student ID when you check in at the airport or you won’t get the discount.

There are limited booking windows for flight discounts for students on Cathay Pacific (for example, in 2024, you must book by April 4 for travel through April 2025 if flying out of the U.S. or Canada).

Before you book, check the website for more details and keep an eye out for future dates.

Air France works a little differently when it comes to cheap flights for students. You’ll still have to prove that you’re a student with a valid student card, proof of enrollment or an admission letter at check-in, but you’ll mostly search for flights on the website as usual — except under “passengers,” make sure to select “student.”

When flight results appear, the student rate, if it’s available, will be in the first column. Prices will vary, but on the upside, the student rate always gets two free checked bags, and you’ll be able to change your flight for no additional fee.

Many eligible trips have to be at least 21 days long; however, there are a few flight options from France to specific destinations that have to be only seven days long.

Unlike with most airlines, the discount offered by Iberia is open to anyone under 30, even if you’re not a student (with additional benefits for those studying abroad).

If that’s you, check to see if Iberia Joven, the discount program for students, offers flights to where you’re headed. If it does, you may be able to score a 10% discount on certain flights and an extra free checked bag if you’re studying abroad.

Just make sure you book on the Iberia Joven site specifically, and know that not all routes are included and the discount is only for the lowest economy fares.

Lufthansa also offers flight discounts for students who book on the airline website. The discounts are valid only for certain flights from select countries, but in addition to fare savings on travel that qualifies, students get more checked baggage allowances and flexible booking.

To take advantage of these fares, you have to be at least 16 and enrolled in some sort of higher education. You'll have to verify your status as a student on the airline website. Then, when you search for fares, just remember to select “Student” to see any applicable discounts.

If you’re a student flying on Turkish Airlines, whether or not you’re a Turkish citizen, you can get up to a 20% discount on domestic flights within Turkey and 15% on international flights.

Students also enjoy a 40-kilogram baggage allowance (about 88 pounds) on flights that charge by weight and two 23-kilogram (about 50-pound) bags on flights that charge by piece. Students get free one-time flight changes for international flights, plus 25% more miles credited to your Miles&Smiles account when you fly before the end of 2024.

To get the discount, verify that you’re a student in the “Discount Types” section on the “My Personal Information” page in your Miles&Smiles loyalty account. Then just select the “Student” passenger option when searching for and booking flights.

Students flying to Emirates’ 250 destinations can score up to a 10% discount on economy and business class fares, plus an extra 10 kilograms (about 22 pounds) or an extra piece of luggage (except when flying to the U.S. or Canada).

Use code STUDENT in the promotional code box to book, then make sure you bring proof that you’re a student to check in.

This special is available only to students ages 16 to 31, and as of this writing, you have to book by March 31, 2024. Act fast and keep an eye on the airline for future deals if you’re a student planning travel to one of Emirates’ destinations.

Students flying on Singapore Airlines can enjoy a 10% discount on Lite, Value or Standard fares in economy class or premium economy class. They also get an extra luggage allowance, which is based on destination, and waived change fees the first time they need to alter their flight.

To enjoy these perks, first join the airline’s KrisFlyer loyalty program . Then you’ll be asked to verify that you’re a student, which you’ll need to do once a year. Then, when it’s time to search for flights, log in and do so on the airline’s dedicated student page. If you are younger than 16, you will not be able to verify your student status online.

SAS offers discounts not just for students, but youth in general, which includes individuals ages 12 to 25. The availability of these discounted fares on any particular flight is limited, and it’s reserved for SAS Go (standard economy) bookings for specific fare classes.

While no student ID is required, travelers will need to prove their age, so make sure to bring along a valid ID. Keep in mind that unaccompanied minors cannot book an SAS Youth Ticket.

There aren’t a lot of extra perks that accompany a Youth Ticket, and SAS doesn’t state how much you can save, but it’s worth searching to find out.

If you’re a student enrolled in higher education ages 18 to 30 and planning travel to any of Qatar Airways’ many destinations, it’s likely worth it to join the airline’s Student Club.

You’ll have to enroll online and share passport and university details, but once you do, you’ll be provided with a unique code to use during booking that will net you a discount.

That code will score you a 10% discount on your first flight, after which you’ll receive a new code for a 15% discount on your second booking and 25% off your third.

Students also get an additional baggage allowance, one complimentary date change for a booked flight and free Super Wi-Fi when you book on the airline website.

You can even fast-track your elite status once you graduate if you fly with Qatar at least once a year. The codes are valid only for Qatar-operated flights.

If you’re a college student, about to be a college student or — in the case of a few airlines — just qualify as a “youth,” you may be able to score some rich discounts and other benefits from a number of airlines.

Just make sure to take note of any special requirements from your preferred airline, sign up for loyalty programs in advance if necessary and enjoy the savings (plus a bit of extra baggage in many cases).

Amtrak Offers 15% Student Discount on Routes Nationwide

WASHINGTON – Great deals are now available for students looking to get away during the summer, travel home, see friends, or return to campus. Amtrak can help students reconnect with friends, rediscover America and explore places off the beaten path with its new student discount. Students between the ages of 17 and 24 can receive 15% off travel throughout the national network. Available at amtrak.com/student-discounts , the offer is valid through December 30, 2021.

Parents can send their students on Amtrak with peace of mind knowing that Amtrak is a fun and safe way for students to travel. In fact, a number of cleaning, contact-free, and convenience measures have been implemented into every part of the customer journey, including:

  • When searching for travel, customers will see the percentage of seats sold that adjusts next to each route as passengers make reservations. This will give customers the opportunity to book a train that is less crowded. If capacity exceeds comfort levels, customers can change their ticket without incurring a fee. There are also no middle seats, making the ride more relaxing and spacious.
  • All trains are equipped with onboard filtration systems with a fresh air exchange rate every 4-5 minutes.
  • Federal law requires all customers and employees to wear a mask at all times while onboard trains and in stations, regardless of vaccination status or state or local laws. Refusing to wear a mask is a violation of federal law; passengers may be subject to penalties under federal law, denied boarding, removed from the train and banned from future travel in the event of noncompliance. For more information, visit:  amtrak.com/coronavirus .
  • Customers should not travel when experiencing  COVID-19 symptoms  or when they meet public  health criteria for quarantine .

To apply this discount, visit amtrak.com/student-discounts or enter code V814 when booking a trip on the Amtrak app. Terms and conditions may apply.

Valid student identification must be presented upon request. This offer is valid for sale through December 30, 2021 and valid for travel between May 19 and December 31, 2021 on most trains. Reservations are required one day prior to travel. The discount may not be available on all trains on all days.

Valuable travel discounts and deals for college students and young adults

Melissa Klurman

When my son turned 18, we suddenly had to rethink the way both he and we as a family traveled.

Quickly realizing that he needed his own paid Clear membership and TSA PreCheck number and that hotels no longer considered him a "kid" when we made a reservation, I envisioned a life of added dollar signs everywhere I looked.

Related: Child turning 18? Here's everything you need to know before the next time they travel

Luckily, I was wrong. Yes, young adults have added expenses (hello, car insurance premiums, and don't even get me started on exorbitant college tuition), but there are some hidden perks to being an 18-plus student, including rail deals and airline discounts.

With all of this top of mind, I couldn't help but wonder: Why do airlines, which are notorious for watching their bottom lines, want to give college kids a break?

"Loyalty matters greatly for airlines," said Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going . "Loyal customers help fill planes without spending marketing dollars while simultaneously feeding the revenue beast through cobranded credit cards [if they have one]. Gaining a loyal following takes time, so why not target people when they are young to help build that brand trust?"

Building loyalty plus saving money? Now that sounds like a win-win scenario to me.

student discount travel pass

You may be surprised to discover that a number of airlines, especially international carriers, provide perks to student travelers, including discounts and increased luggage allowances, which come in handy for study abroad programs.

The following are the discounts that were active and had the most availability at press time, but check with other carriers if you have foreign travel within other regions planned since there may be other deals available.

United Airlines

United is the only U.S. airline that offers a consistent year-round discount just for young adults. You don't need to be a student to take advantage of this rate, either. Young adult travelers between 18 and 23 are eligible for discounts that start at 5% but are sometimes much more than that depending on the route, according to TPGers' firsthand experiences.

Note that this discount is only available on the United app.

Book before March 31 for Emirates' special sale for students . This deal is especially flexible for both younger and older students, with an extensive age range between 16 and 31 years old. Travelers need to present a current student ID or school acceptance letter at check-in.

Emirates' deal extends to 250 destinations, including some in the U.S., if you book your flight by March 31 and use the promo code "STUDENT" at booking. This code applies a discount of up to 10% on economy- and business-class fares. You also get an additional 10 kilograms (22 pounds) more weight for luggage or one extra piece of baggage depending on the route, plus flexible options to change your flight.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore's Student Privileges program was one of the most extensive discount programs I've found, offering reduced fares to students around the globe after you've verified that you're an active student through its KrisFlyer student verification service. After student status has been verified, you'll receive a 10% discount for Lite, Value and Standard fares in economy and for premium economy fares.

Students also get an increased luggage allowance, with three pieces allowed from the U.S. and Canada and 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of luggage elsewhere. Plus, Singapore Airlines will waive any fees for the first booking change you make. (Know, though, that if you keep changing, the carrier will start charging.)

Scandinavian Airlines

SAS makes booking its youth tickets very simple. The discount for this one applies to anyone age 12 to 25, and you do not need to prove eligibility beyond providing your birthdate.

Note that this discount only promises "special rates" without a specific percentage given, and no special luggage allowance is available. Still, it's worth checking out since we're fans of the airline's flight deals for kids .

If you're planning on studying abroad, definitely bookmark this deal: Lufthansa offers student fares with proof of enrollment for bookings originating in the U.S.

Student fares are only available in economy to destinations in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and India. Not only is the airfare discounted, but you'll be able to check a second bag for free.

Reduced fares are clearly identified as "Student Fare" on the flight selection page. Passengers must be full-time students age 16 and above, enrolled in a higher educational institution with a valid student email address, and must have a valid form of identification.

If you're a student going to school in Europe, budget airline Ryanair has a deal for you. Register with the Erasmus Student Network (a nonprofit, international student union) and you'll be eligible to get a 10% discount on Ryanair's already affordable tickets, plus a free checked bag.

Note that fares must be booked at least 28 days in advance, and the deal is only eligible during the school term (from Sept. 1 to June 15).

Select rail companies also offer travel deals and discounts for college-age students.

Amtrak is generous with its definition of student, allowing anyone between the ages of 17 and 24 to take advantage of its national student discount , which provides a 15% discount on regular fares.

Since this is a promotion my family regularly tries to book when possible (my son goes to college in Washington, D.C., and I live in New Jersey), I'm well versed in some of the pros and cons of this deal.

According to Amtrak, "The discount will automatically be applied when qualifying travel is selected. Or, use the Amtrak app and enter code V814 when booking your trip." I suggest doing the latter to ensure the reduced fare is applied to your booking.

There are a number of restrictions, and there's definitely a limited number of seats on each train that are eligible, but when it works, the savings are worth the effort. Also note that the earlier you book, the less expensive tickets are, so you'll have a better chance of saving more money. Keep in mind, too, that this deal must be booked at least a day before travel.

TPG has been following the rollout of Florida's Brightline train with much enthusiasm. The new, modern train system links Miami to Orlando with stops in several South Florida locations; it's a game changer for Florida travel, especially for trips to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando .

Brightline has great rates for students on its current routes, including a 25% discount for students when you create an account with an active university email for most Florida colleges.

Exploring Europe by train is a rite of passage for students and young adults from around the world. One reason: It's an affordable and easy way to travel.

This is especially true with Eurail's Youth Discount , which reduces rail pass rates by up to 25%. You can use the youth pass discount if you're at least 12 years old but no older than 27.

Other deals for students

Student IDs unlock a world of discounts in the arts. Almost every museum I've visited around the globe has reduced or free admission for students who can prove their school affiliation or age. (Remember to always carry your student ID when you're traveling to take advantage of these deals.) Many Broadway theaters and performance venues elsewhere have student rush seats, too, making it possible to show up on the day of the show and spend some time in a line to score a steeply reduced ticket.

Unfortunately, you won't find deals on car rentals for young adults since the minimum rental age is usually 23. When there's a lower minimum age, like at Enterprise, you'll typically find an additional fee for younger drivers gets applied to the reservation.

Hotels are another area where student discounts are hard to find, but if you begin building your own brand loyalty by joining one or more rewards programs, you can eventually rack up enough nights, stays or points to qualify for elite status, which comes with all kinds of extra perks.

Bottom line

Being a young adult brings travel benefits in the form of discounts on airlines and trains. Students can almost always show their student IDs for reduced or waived admission to museums, too.

Youth Discounts on the Eurail Pass

Travel Around Europe on a Student Budget

Ian Cumming / Getty Images

There's something romantic about the idea of traveling around Europe on train, with nothing more than a backpack, an open-ended train ticket, and endless possibilities. And even though the emergence of low-cost airlines has made train travel less practical in Europe, Eurail still has its advantages. You don't have the same limits on luggage size as you do with a plane, they typically drop you off in the city center, you can enjoy the magnificent scenery, and trains are much more environmentally friendly. Plus, if you're 27 or younger, you are entitled to some excellent discounts.

Riders who are between 12 and 27 years old are eligible for discounts of up to 23% on their Eurail train passes . The discount is applicable to either the global pass for various countries or a single-country pass.

Eurail is a consortium of train companies covering most of Europe, and it provides one of the easiest and most exciting ways for overseas visitors to explore the continent (if you are an EU citizen or resident, you would purchase an InterRail pass instead).

The Eurail Pass covers train lines (and some ferries!) that reach 31 countries across Europe. The Eurail website will show you all of the destinations you can get to, plus the average time it takes to travel between stations.

Eurail Youth Pass Types

There are two types of Eurail youth passes—the global pass and the one country pass. If you're planning to do a Euro-trip and visit more than one country, you will need a global pass. If you only want to explore several cities in a single country, you would purchase the one country pass.

To take advantage of the youth discount, the rider must be 27 years old or younger on the first day of travel. If you are 27 when you begin the trip and will turn 28 while you are abroad, you are still eligible for the youth discount.

Eurail Global Passes

This is an incredibly flexible pass and offers great value for money. If you're not sure which countries you want to visit on your Europe trip and want to keep your options open, this is the pass for you. Here are some of the flexibility options you can choose from, and you can pick from any of the 31 countries in Europe that Eurail operates in to use your pass:

  • 3 travel days within 1 month
  • 5 travel days within 1 month
  • 7 travel days within 1 month
  • 10 travel days within 2 months
  • 15 travel days within 2 months
  • 15 days continuous
  • 22 days continuous
  • 1 month continuous
  • 2 months continuous
  • 3 months continuous

Of course, the more days of travel you plan and the more flexible the pass, the more expensive it will be.

Eurail One Country Passes

You can get single country passes for the following countries/regions: Austria, Benelux, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, the Greek Islands, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Scandinavia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden. This pass allows you a number of travel days with a set time period—just like the global pass options—but only for travel within the country that you choose.

Some countries, such as Switzerland, Spain, and Germany, offer their own rail passes apart from the Eurail Pass, and they are usually a better deal.

First Class or Second Class?

When you are purchasing your Eurail Pass, you'll see the option to purchase a first-class or second-class ticket. If your budget allows for it, traveling first class is obviously the more comfortable option, with more legroom, a quieter car, and sometimes free Wi-Fi.

However, the difference between first and second class is not drastic, and second class is the way most travelers and locals ride the trains.

Is the Eurail Pass Worth It?

Whether or not the Eurail Pass is worth the cost really depends on your specific itinerary. If you are planning a trip across various countries and don't know exactly how long you plan to stay in each location, then the Eurail global pass offers an affordable way to travel around with flexibility.

However, if you know the exact dates of your train travel in advance, you may be able to get cheaper tickets by buying individual, point to point tickets . Buying train tickets in Europe is like buying plane tickets; the prices go up the closer you get to the travel date. If your trip is primarily relatively short train rides between cities in one country, look at average prices before purchasing a pass. Depending on the country, you can often find individual tickets for a much better deal than purchasing a pass.

It's difficult to know if the Eurail Pass is worth the money without doing some detailed calculations. If flexibility is important to you or you don't know the exact travel dates, it's advantageous to have. You can also mix and match: Purchase a global pass for longer trips across borders, but buy short-leg train trips on their own. Having the youth discount also make the Eurail Pass a much more attractive option, and is likely to save you money in the end.

How much are Frequent Pass tickets?

Here you'll find our full list of Frequent Pass ticket prices .

Is my pass refundable?

Your subscription pass is refundable within 14 calendar days of purchase, which corresponds to the withdrawal period provided for by Directive 97/7/EC on the protection of consumers in respect of distance contracts. You are entitled to a full refund if your subscription pass has not been used. If you have travelled with your subscription pass, Eurostar reserves the right to deduct from the total price of your subscription pass the difference between the price of the discounted fare resulting from the use of the subscription pass and the price of the full-price fare.

How do I show my pass when my ticket is checked on board?

The train manager will verify your pass by scanning your ticket during ticket checks.

You may also be asked to produce a valid ID to prove you are the subscription pass holder.

A “valid ID” refers to a valid form of identification that can be used to verify the identity of an individual. Acceptable forms of ID include but are not limited to a passport, national identity card, driving licence, student ID, etc.

Ticket checks take place before boarding, at the door of the train or during your journey.

Please note that if you don’t have a subscription pass, you could be charged with an ‘onboard fare’ - the advertised ticket price plus €25.

You can apply for student travel at the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs – DUO (education implementation service) website. You will need a personal OV-chipkaart to load the student travel product on to. The time you check in determines whether you will travel free or with a discount for your whole journey.

Check to see if you can apply

Free and discounted student travel is part of your student finance . It is a loan which is converted into a gift if you graduate within 10 years. Your eligibility for student finance depends on your citizenship or residency status, your age and your course. You can find out if you can apply for student travel at the studentreisproduct.nl website.

Weekday or weekend pass

With free and discounted student travel, you can choose between a weekday or a weekend pass. If you study in a different area to where you live, a weekday pass might be a better option. If you live and study in the same area, then a weekend subscription may be more practical.

Free and discounted travel

When exactly can you travel for free, and when at a reduced rate? What happens on public holidays? You find the validity of both weekday and weekend passes  in the overview with travel days on the DUO website.

Changing your pass type

You may wish to change your pass at a later date if you find that one type is more practical than the other. You can do this by logging in to Mijn DUO . You are allowed a maximum of two changes in a single year, but you can only make one change every 2 months. You cannot make any changes between 1 May and 25 August in the same year.

Applying for student travel

If you would like free or discounted travel on public transport, then log in to Mijn DUO to apply for student travel.

Loading student travel on to your OV-chipkaart

New students can apply for and purchase a personal OV-chipkaart (public transport card) online. When your application has been processed by DUO, koppel (link) the student travel product to your personal OV-chipkaart online. Then the student travel product must be physically uploaded to your OV-chipkaart at a service point. There is a  list of service points in your area  on the ov-chipkaart.nl website.

Cancelling student travel

If you are no longer entitled to receive free and discounted student travel, you must cancel it yourself at a service point. This will not happen automatically when you cancel your student finance. When will you get a fine? If you use your student travel product while you are no longer entitled to it.

How to get the hulu student deal: college students get 75% off.

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

One of the perks of being a college student is that you gain access to all sorts of discounted streaming offers. Hulu has one of the best student deals on the market, with the discount taking off about 75% of the regular monthly cost of an ad-supported Hulu account. Here's everything you need to know about the Hulu Student Deal , from how much it costs to how you qualify.

Hulu's password-sharing crackdown is officially here, so if you're living in a dorm right now and trying to connect to your parents' account on a TV, you might find that you need to get your own account. Fortunately, the monthly student rate will only cost you a little more than a pack of ramen.

student discount travel pass

Hulu's Student Plan offers ad-supported streaming for just $2 a month.

How much does the Hulu Student Deal cost?

The Hulu Student Deal costs $1.99 per month and lasts as long as you remain a verified college student. After that, you'll be charged the standard rate of $7.99 per month.

If you're in the market for a music streaming app as well, you can also save with the Spotify Premium Student discount , which bundles Spotify Premium with ad-supported Hulu for only $6 a month (a $13 savings).

Benefits of Hulu Student Deal

The Hulu Student Deal comes with all of the benefits of a regular ad-supported Hulu plan. This includes access to Hulu's catalog of original shows, as well as other popular TV series and movies. This means that you can catch on-demand episodes of "Abbott Elementary," "The Handmaid's Tale," "The Bear," and "Bob's Burgers" all for just under $2 per month.

How to sign up for the Hulu Student Deal

Signing up is easy. All you have to do is click "Get This Deal" on the Hulu Student Deal webpage. If you don't already have an account, it will prompt you to create one. From there, you'll go through verification and fill out your payment info.

How can Hulu tell if I'm a student?

You're eligible for this promo as long as you remain enrolled at a U.S. Title IV accredited college or university. Verifications are performed through the third-party credential checker SheerID (so simply having an old .edu email address probably won't cut it). Automatic re-verification happens annually to ensure that you're still a student.

I'm a student, and I already have a full-priced Hulu account

If you're a college student who already pays the regular monthly rate for an ad-supported Hulu account, don't worry. According to the terms and conditions, this offer is valid for new and existing Hulu-billed subscribers. All you need to do is log in and go to the Hulu Student Deal page, where you'll click "Get This Deal." After verification, it will apply the student discount pricing.

If you don't mind spending a little more money, you can pay $5.99 per month for Spotify Premium Student , which comes with a Spotify Premium subscription and an ad-supported Hulu plan. Spotify Premium normally goes for $10.99 per month. Combined with Hulu Basic's $7.99 monthly fee, this would typically run you $18.98. At $5.99 per month, this gets you an almost 70% discount on the duo. Verification for this plan is also performed through SheerID and lasts up to four years.

If you're not a student, there are still a variety of Hulu plans you can choose from. Check out our full Hulu cost breakdown for additional plan details, or try out the popular bundle below. While not eligible for the student discount promo, it comes with Hulu's entire catalog, Disney+, ESPN+, and access to over 90 live channels.

student discount travel pass

Hulu + Live TV includes over 90 channels, along with Hulu's on-demand library and access to Disney Plus and ESPN Plus. Adding live TV drives up the price significantly, but it's a rolling one-month contract that you're free to cancel at any time. As live TV services go, though, this is one of the best.

What are National Parks?

What is national park week, why should you buy an america the beautiful pass.

student discount travel pass

My cousin Emily and I pose in front of the Gulf Islands National Seashore sign, one of the many places an annual pass will grant you entry.

It can save you money

If you’re only planning to visit one park, you may not need a park pass. However, many of the National Parks are near other parks and locations covered by the pass. For some, you may even have to drive through them to get to your ultimate destination.

Fun away from screens

National Parks are a great way to get some fresh air, get away from screens, and really experience what the world has to offer. They’re an especially cost-efficient way to have fun as a family, as for most parks you pay by the car rather than by the person. Plus, for all parks, kids under 16 get in free!

To support the parks

The best reason to buy an annual park pass is the simplest—to support the National Parks. Every park has maintenance that must be done on roadways, trails, and buildings in order for visitors to enjoy a safe, accessible experience. Each time you pay an entrance fee at a National Park (or make a donation), you’re contributing to the National Park Service’s mission of protecting and preserving some of our country’s most breathtaking places.

What’s included with the pass?

Every America the Beautiful Pass includes the following:

A full year of access beginning the month of purchase

Entrance for four people or one vehicle (depending on whether the park entrance fee is by person or by vehicle)

Entrance to the 2,000+ recreation areas managed by the National Park Service, US Fish & Wildlife Service, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and US Army of Corps of Engineers

The pass does not cover extra charges within the park, such as camping fees, paid parking areas, etc.

Where to Buy America the Beautiful Pass

Be sure to check if you’re eligible for a discount, prepare before you go.

In Yosemite alone, you can experience jaw-dropping mountain views and walks through groves of Giant sequoia trees.

It’s important to remember that though National Parks are some of the most stunning places in the country, they can also pose dangers to those who aren’t used to them. For example, most National Park paths are not paved, so no matter if you plan to hike a ton or simply take a stroll, being able to walk in different elevations, terrain, and weather conditions is important. Be sure to research the weather before visiting and plan accordingly with what you pack and wear.

Check out a few essentials you’ll need for pretty much any park. For a more comprehensive list on what to pack or if you're a first-timer, bookmark our guide to visiting a National Park. If you're going by car, we've got that covered too.

Student pro-Palestine protests spread despite mass arrests

Police raid camps and gatherings at schools across the us, students at george washington university start protest camp to support gaza.

Students at George Washington University start protest camp to support Gaza

Live updates: Follow the latest on Israel-Gaza

Thursday marked a week since students at Columbia University in New York started a protest camp over the Gaza war and demands for the school to divest from companies connected to Israel's action in the Palestinian territories.

Leila Obeid, a Jordanian-American student at Barnard College, said she has been at the Columbia camp since last Wednesday and will not leave until the university meets the protesters' demands.

“We have negotiations going on with the university, with the administration, but we know that they're not in good faith," Ms Obeid said.

"And they continue to put their students at risk and continue to reprimand their students who are just here to advocate to stop sending weapons to murder Palestinians in Gaza."

The university's order to have police clear the first protest tents and arrest more than 100 people last week has inspired other schools across the US and around the world to open their own camps.

Activist Jill Stein , the Green Party's presidential candidate for this year's election, visited the Columbia camp on Thursday.

Speaking to The National , Ms Stein accused US President Joe Biden of handing “off the baton for commander-in-chief” to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“He basically passed it to Netanyahu and said, 'Do what you like and we will fund you. We will not draw any red lines. We will be here to apologise for you',” she said.

“This is essentially like handing off the responsibilities … to the incredibly reckless and endangering criminal government of Israel.”

The protests that have caused upheaval at so many colleges and universities across the US made their way to the nation’s capital on Thursday, with hundreds of students demonstrating in support of Palestine at George Washington University.

In the early hours, students set up protest tents on the school’s central lawn, a few blocks away from the State Department .

By midday, about 30 tents had been erected and students were chanting in support of Palestine.

“ Intifada , revolution, there is only one solution and it's free, free Palestine,” the crowd chanted as many waved flags and held posters denouncing Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

Students have called for their universities to back a ceasefire in Gaza and divest from companies with ties to Israel.

“We’re protesting apartheid and our demands are divestment,” one student, Josh, told The National .

The third-year student said he was not worried about being arrested or expelled like students at other schools.

“They can’t arrest all of us and they’re not going to,” he said. “It's happening nationwide across multiple universities.”

Eric Hirshfield, a former student of the university, told The National that he had stopped by to see what was happening.

Mr Hirshfield, who wore a yarmulke and said he was pro-Israel and pro-Palestine, called the protesters “mostly peaceful”.

“I don’t feel uncomfortable,” he said.

“This is America [and you have the] right to protest as long as you don’t infringe upon the rights of others, and they’re not – they’re actually being good. They let me pass.”

Mikkel Rockman, a third-year student at Columbia who served in the Israeli army, told The National that protesters only talk about Palestinian suffering by making Jews and Israel out to be the enemy, but “what that does is it causes more violent rhetoric”.

“They've kind of turned the word 'Zionist' into an insult," Mr Rockman said.

"They've dehumanised us in a way that if you support Israel, and you don't support what they're doing, then you shouldn't be talked to … everything you say is a lie."

The State Department, which has been dealing with staff resignations over the conflict, said Mr Biden's administration is intent on pursuing what is in the “best interest” for the country.

“Of course, we see what is happening there,” State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said.

“But we're also not naive to the fact that, when it comes to any of the foreign policy that we pursue, 100 per cent of the population is not going to agree with what we're trying to accomplish.

“We are clear-eyed in the fact that what we're trying to pursue is in the best interest for the American people and is in the best interest of the national security of the American people.”

In New York, Columbia students faced a looming deadline to negotiate with administrators on how to dismantle their camp.

Sueda Polat, who is part of the student negotiations team at the university, told The National that they refuse to engage in discussions with the university if facing threats of militarised violence.

“I will say that the university students who are here have demonstrated an incredible will and an incredible resolve and resilience to be in this space,” she said.

“And I will say that they're committed to remaining in this space until the demands are met through the negotiations process.”

Protests continue at Columbia University after pro-Palestine encampment arrests

There have been calls nationally, including by House Speaker Mike Johnson on a Wednesday campus visit, for the National Guard to be sent in .

The university has denied it ever threatened to request the National Guard's presence.

Overnight, there were mass arrests reported at pro-Palestine camps and protest gatherings at three US schools.

More than 90 people were arrested at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and the campus was closed after the protest.

The USC has faced backlash over a decision not to allow Muslim valedictorian Asna Tabassum to speak at her commencement.

The university also on Thursday announced that it would not hold its main commencement event, instead choosing to host smaller ceremonies at individual schools.

Almost 100 people were taken into police custody at Emerson College in central Boston, while more than 50 were arrested at the University of Texas in Austin.
