It includes six 1.4-ounce bottles and two 0.4-ounce bottles. The larger ones consist of two pump bottles with a removable clip to prevent accidental deployment, two spray bottles, and two flip-cap bottles. The smaller ones are miniature cream jars. All eight are made from clear PET plastic, which we found durable yet lightweight enough for travel. We also liked that we could easily see how much product was left.

We appreciated the thoughtful inclusion of a pipette, a funnel, and a spatula to help with decanting products from their original containers. They made the bottles relatively easy to fill, although we did experience some spillage when decanting thick body lotion. Nevertheless, there was no leaking or visible wear and tear after our intensive testing process. The set also includes a sheet of labels and a clear plastic toiletry bag. The only real drawback? None of the bottles are particularly big, making this option suitable for short trips only.

They’re also 100 percent leakproof, waterproof, and airtight, as proven by our testing process. We found them incredibly durable and can’t imagine a scenario that would result in them being punctured or crushed. They are small (each one carries just 0.56 ounces), which could be a drawback. However, a capacity calculator on the brand website suggests you can carry approximately a week’s worth of products, depending on how regularly you use each one.

We were particularly impressed with the bottles’ no-drip valves, which successfully prevented leaks. Having said that, we did feel that this set is so reasonably priced, there’s nothing to stop you from buying multiple sets if you have more products to pack. Instead of labels, the bottles come in four separate shades to distinguish between them. We also liked that their wide opening makes them easy to fill, even with thicker liquids and gels. And when it comes to cleaning them, the bendable silicone easily accommodates a bottle brush. All colorways include a transparent carry case.

Options are as follows: two 1-ounce spray bottles, two 3-ounce squeeze bottles, two 2-ounce squeeze bottles, two 1-ounce jars, and two 0.3-ounce jars. We were impressed by the capacity of the largest bottles, which we felt could easily hold at least four washes’ worth of shampoo and conditioner. 

The bottles are made of durable yet flexible food-grade silicone, with wide mouths for easy filling and cleaning. We appreciated the inclusion of two scoopers, a funnel, and a cleaning brush to help with these tasks, as well as a sheet of labels. Most of the containers held up well to our durability tests with no leaks or spills. The only exception was one of the jars, which suffered a broken lid. The set comes in a transparent carry bag and could fit into a quart-sized Ziploc (a TSA requirement) with some skillful maneuvering, although it was tight.

The INSFIT set is ideal for those who like to keep things simple with only a handful of essential products but also tend to travel for longer and need as much capacity as TSA will allow. It features four identical 3-ounce silicone bottles large enough to hold at least one to two weeks’ worth of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and sunscreen (or similar). The bottles are squeezable, which makes dispensing simple, although we found that thicker lotions and gels were easier to squeeze if the bottle was at least half full.

Other highlights include fully removable caps and wide mouths for mess-free filling and easy cleaning, and three-layered lids that are essentially leakproof. Even during our pressure test, caps remained securely in place, and afterward, the bottles still looked brand new. In fact, we were shocked to find out how affordable this set is given its evident quality. We also liked the stylish, see-through carry bag and the fact that there’s a special place on the caps to stick the included labels so that they adhere properly.

With their flat-pack design and sturdy quality, they’re designed especially for adventures and expeditions where saving on space and weight is a priority . With a capacity of 3 ounces each, they’re five times lighter and 3.5 times more compact than standard silicone bottles, and pliable enough to fit into tight spaces: the ultimate backpacking companion. 

We found them easy to fill with any liquid that was the consistency of shampoo or thinner. Thicker gels and lotions were tricky since the mouth wasn’t as wide as that of standard travel bottles. Still, any mess is easy to clean off the waterproof exterior. They fit easily into a quart-sized Ziploc, and we love the snap hook for attaching to the outside of your backpack for on-the-go use. The loop also features a spot for writing a description of the contents with a permanent marker. As expected, the packs survived all our tests with zero leaks or signs of damage.

Our overall favorite was the LiquiSnugs Premium Travel Bottles set. These bottles stood out for their durable, leakproof silicone construction and thoughtful extras including adjustable labels and individual suction pads. For the most budget-friendly option, choose the small yet sturdily versatile Vitog Travel Bottles Kit .

Upon receiving the bottles, our first step was to examine their overall quality and design and note any unique features. Then, we filled at least three of the bottles in the set: one with lotion, one with micellar water, and one with shampoo. For each one, we noted how easy it was to fill without spilling, how easy it was to clean if spillage did occur, and how appropriate each bottle would be for holding different types of liquid. We also tested how easy it was to open the bottle and dispense the product inside. 

Next, we compressed the bottles in our palms to mimic pressure. We shook them, rolled them, squeezed them, and threw them to stimulate rough handling in transit, noting how well they withstood this treatment. Our final test was to put all of the bottles from the set into a quart-sized Ziploc bag, and then inside a toiletry bag. Then, we dropped them from waist height three times, always from different angles, to see whether any breakages or leaks occurred and whether the bottles showed any signs of wear and tear. 

Each set was scored on a scale of one to five for ease of use, quality, design, performance, and value. Average scores were used to determine our category winners.

Other Travel Toiletry Bottles We Tested

GLOBEGEAR Travel Bottles : This nine-piece set features a solid range of containers and tools made of hard plastic that doesn't feel flimsy. We deducted points for the skimpy capacity of the bottles, which would only last a few days or applications (and made filling the bottles difficult), though the affordable price makes this a good option for the infrequent traveler.

Kitsch Travel Containers : Fans of variety will appreciate the range of products included in this compact kit. It won't set you back much and, accordingly, we feel it also won't last long. We like the idea of the flat containers but found them somewhat difficult to fill.

Cosywell Travel Containers : The Cosywell Containers are all the same shape in 10- and 20-milliliter capacities. We found the plastic and silicone jars easy to fill and well-designed, but they're more suited to thick liquids such as gels and creams.

What to Look For in Travel Toiletry Bottles

Durability is key when choosing travel toiletry bottles since containers that are easily punctured or cracked will result in a mess that’s at best inconvenient and at worst potentially expensive or upsetting depending on how much product is wasted and whether any other items in your carry-on are affected. Look for options made out of sturdy hard plastic or thick, flexible silicone, then check user reviews to get an idea of how the construction holds up under real-life travel conditions. If you’re planning an extreme adventure, technical options like the waterproof flat-pack bottles from Matador may be worth the extra expense.

Leakproofness

A bottle doesn’t have to break for leaks to occur—all it takes is a poorly constructed seal or lid. Look for bottles with a triple-layered leakproof cap and jars with a secure screw top. Pump bottles should come with a removable clip that prevents them from being deployed accidentally. Again, user reviews help check how efficient these measures are (it’s easy for a brand to advertise their product as leakproof, even if it’s not). Some brands, like Cadence, actually guarantee the efficacy of their leakproof design. Just in case, we always recommend storing toiletry bottles in a waterproof bag or Ziploc as a second line of defense. 

If you plan on packing your toiletry bottles in your carry-on bag, you must make sure that none of them exceed the TSA-approved limit of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Some sets are made up of identical large bottles of around 3 ounces, giving you the maximum allowable capacity for each of your products. However, because all bottles must fit in a single quart-sized Ziploc bag, this limits the number of bottles to around four. 

If you have more products to pack, you may prefer a set that divides this capacity between a greater number of smaller bottles and containers—especially if you only require some of your liquids in very small quantities. The length of your trip will also dictate how big you need your bottles to be unless you only plan on using your carry-on liquids as a backup in case the full-size versions in your checked luggage get delayed. 

Toiletries can be stored in opaque, translucent, or transparent bottles of any color as long as each individual bottle does not exceed the maximum capacity limit. For carry-on bags, most authorities including TSA set that limit at 3.4 ounces. Liquids can be in their original container or decanted into any container of your choosing (even one that’s labeled incorrectly), as long as these size restrictions are adhered to. 

Most airport authorities—including TSA—rule that bottles containing liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes cannot exceed 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) if you wish to pack them in your carry-on luggage . In addition, all of these bottles must fit inside a quart-sized Ziploc bag and be screened separately from the rest of your luggage at security. Containers that exceed this limit will not be permitted, even if the volume of the product inside is less than 3.4 ounces (for example, if you have a half-used bottle of conditioner). Note that these restrictions do not apply to checked luggage.

Although toiletry bottles don’t have to be labeled from a legal perspective, many people like to do so to ensure they don’t end up brushing their teeth with expensive moisturizer, or vice versa. Some travel bottles come with waterproof stickers, especially for this purpose, and you can also purchase them separately online. This is a better option than writing on a standard office label by hand since toiletry bottles frequently get wet and ink can run and cause staining or become illegible. Alternatively, a permanent marker applied directly to the bottle could be an option if you’re always going to use the same container for the same product.

50 Sustainable travel products to help you reduce waste

Several reports in 2021 indicated that the pandemic has influenced people to travel more sustainably in the future. This includes packing sustainable travel products in our luggage, being mindful of what’s used and discarded along the way, and how to make conscious efforts to respect the environment of places we visit.

Sustainable packing begins with assessing which items in our travel bags help protect the planet and which ones pollute it. It requires identifying companies that promote longevity in their products, use plant-based and biodegradable materials and packaging, and help us produce as little waste as possible. With the expansion of the green market in recent years, packing sustainably is easier than it’s been in decades. Let’s use our travel funds to foster further development of eco-friendly products and practices.

While the following suggestions on sustainable travel products won’t result in zero-waste travel, hopefully, they’ll encourage a more intentional approach to reducing waste and eliminating more single-use items.

A mask may continue to be a necessary piece of kit for many years to come, and the earth cannot sustain the devastating impact of the environmental damage caused by disposable masks. Research by OceansAsia estimates that over 1.5 billion single-use face masks entered oceans in 2020, resulting in as much as 6,240 metric tons of marine plastic pollution.

Skip the disposable variety. There are many companies and Etsy sellers that have created a host of reusable face masks for non-medical use. For a top-of-the-line mask, check out Sonovia. The Sonomask Pro is rated as more effective than the N-95 mask. Tests conducted by Vismederi Textyle, a leading CE-approved laboratory, revealed that Sonovia’s fabrics eliminate Delta variant particles with over 99.95% effectiveness. It’s pricey but effective, and it’s the most comfortable mask I’ve ever worn.

One feature I appreciate in Osprey products is the “All Mighty Guarantee.’ This translates into a lifetime warranty where Osprey will repair any damage or defect free of charge. If the bag can’t be fixed, it’ll be replaced.

On my return to Canada from New Zealand, I tested Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee. My Farpoint 40 had fallen off the back of a motorcycle, suffering a nasty case of road rash. I shipped my damaged pack to Osprey’s partner in Montreal and several weeks later received a brand-new bag. My old bag didn’t end up in a landfill. Recoverable parts of damaged and worn-out bags are used to make functional repairs to other bags. It’s a win for consumers and a win for the environment.

A refillable water bottle is a no-brainer; it belongs on every packing list. The challenge lies in keeping it clean and choosing what works best given your travel plans and the ability of the water bottle to work with the rest of your gear. Does it need to fit in the cup holder of a vehicle or the side pocket of a backpack? If it needs to be clipped to a crossbody purse or day bag, does it need to have a loop, handle, reinforced grommet, or carabiner? Does it need to purify water in places where tap water may not be safe to drink?

An advantage of a foldable water bottle is that it takes up hardly any space when empty. It can be useful as a primary water bottle or as a secondary source of hydration when one water bottle isn’t enough. The Vapur Eclipse Flexible Water Bottle has a capacity of 1 litre / 34 fl oz and folds down to a compact package weighing 3.1 oz / 88 g when empty. An integrated carabiner allows attachment to a bag or belt loop. It also comes in a capacity of 0.7 l / 23.6 fl oz.

When choosing a rigid water bottle, some are too wide to fit in a vehicle’s cup holder. Others are too tall or too narrow to fit snugly in the side pocket of a daypack and tend to fall out.

When travelling to those parts of the world where the tap water isn’t drinkable, a reusable water bottle with a built-in water purifier/filter is an alternative option to plastic water bottles that aren’t likely to be recycled. I like the self-cleaning LARQ Bottle Movement PureVis that allows access to safe drinking water from any source… tap, puddles, lakes, or streams. It uses UV-C technology to bathe the inside of the bottle with UV light to clean the bottle and sterilize the contents.

If you love your daily tea or coffee, carry a collapsible, reusable cup. Or take a load off and enjoy it in a proper cup or mug while soaking up the atmosphere and complimentary Wi-Fi of a local coffee shop.

While advances are being made in recycling cups and lids, the vast majority end up as litter or in landfills and oceans. And it may be some time before the edible or compostable variety becomes commonplace.

Mine is a Stojo Pocket Cup with a capacity of 12 oz / 355 ml. Expanded, it’s 5 in / 12 cm tall, 2 in / 5 cm collapsed, and weighs 150 g / 5 oz. (The 24 oz / 710 ml size comes with a straw.) It’s more portable than a non-collapsible cup and easy to collapse and bring to the extended position. The lid is secure and leakproof. It’s constructed of food-grade silicone, with a BPA-free lid and heat sleeve. It’s microwave and dishwasher safe. I find it retains the coffee aroma, so it’s best kept for the intended use (e.g., as a coffee or tea or soup cup).

Find a permanent place in your day bag for a reusable pocket shopping bag. I’ve found in the past that if it’s not in my day bag, chances are I’ll need to pay for a reusable shopping bag or end up with a plastic bag (where they’re still available). My machine washable ChicoBag rePETe is made from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles and other recycled components for its carabiner, cording, and cord lock. The bag folds into its own little sack, and its lightweight carabiner can clip to a purse or belt loop. It’s rated to carry 11 kg (25 lb). I’ve had it for years, and it has earned its rightful place as one of my travel essentials. Buying fresh, local food in markets invariably results in less waste and fewer emissions associated with transportation over long distances. Chances are there won’t be any annoying stickers that need to be removed prior to composting. It’s also an opportunity to interact with the producers of the food, eliminate the ‘middlemen’ in between, and keep travel funds in communities we love to support. Shopping at local markets is easier with a few reusable, lightweight mesh produce bags and a pocket shopping bag. In grocery stores, they’ll help you refuse produce wrapped in Styrofoam or plastic and skip plastic produce bags. They weigh next to nothing, consume very little space, and double as a strainer when washing fruit and vegetables. Mine came as a pack of 12 containing three different sizes. When I pack a set of three bags (large, medium, and small), the combined weight is only 64 g / 2.3 oz.

For travels that involve housesitting or staying in self-contained accommodation, a reusable bread bag is handy. It helps avoid plastic bags, paper packaging, twist ties, and plastic bread clips when purchasing bread from a bakery, farmers’ market, and certain grocery stores.

Refuse disposable cutlery. When ordering takeout, ask that none be placed in the bag. Carry your own chopsticks, cutlery, spork , or wallet-sized flatware. They’ll help you avoid the disposable stuff or utensils where the cleanliness is suspect.

I’m a fan of the Gosun stainless steel flatware . When not in use, it collapses to fit in a wallet-sized case.

Sea to Summit produces a collapsible plate and bowl . The X-Plate has a rigid cut-resistant base and weighs 4.9 oz / 140 g. The X-Bowl weighs 2.8 oz / 80 g. Both are made of food-grade silicone.

Or perhaps a collapsible set of containers with a leakproof lid is a better fit for your ability to prepare and pack snacks and meals in advance or bring leftovers from eating out in restaurants.

Plastic straws suck. According to National Geographic, US residents use 500 million straws every day. Some suggest that straws are unnecessary, that we use them out of habit, or because a drink comes with one.

However, some people use straws as a matter of hygiene to avoid contact with the rim of a cup, can, or bottle. Others prefer that their teeth not come in contact with the liquid because they’re sensitive or susceptible to staining. For some people with physical disabilities, straws play an essential role in helping them eat and drink. For others, it’s a matter of convenience to avoid reapplying lipstick. If you’re a ‘straw person’ or expect to drink from a coconut, there are reusable metal, glass, or bamboo options. A telescopic version , with a collapsible cleaning brush, comes in a small carrying case that packs easily in a day bag.

When ordering a drink, add “no straw, please” as a matter of habit. Make it as common as ordering a drink without ice where the water quality is suspect.

Ziploc® bags are so handy that it’s hard to give them up. Thankfully, there are many viable alternatives.

There are lots of reusable zip-top bags on the market. I’ve used E-Z Seal Extra Thick Reusable Storage Bags. They’re washable, leakproof, and safe for storing food. Use them as sandwich bags or for supplements, trail mix, pastries, fruit, or leftovers. Wash them out, and they dry overnight. Or use them as packing organizers for smaller items that are difficult to find when allowed to roam free in a bag. One with a pre-moistened tablet towel (See #27 below) has a permanent place in my daypack and in-flight personal bag. Stasher is a popular choice, but the one I bought was much more expensive and is four times heavier than an E-Z Seal bag of a similar size. Beeswax clings easily to a bowl, sandwich, or opened roll of Tums. It’s a sustainable alternative to plastic cling wrap and Ziploc® bags because it’s made of natural ingredients and is compostable and biodegradable. A pack of a few different sizes offers alternatives to single-use plastic.

There are many sellers on Etsy who make pouches to serve a host of packing needs. Cloth pouches with an easy-to-clean water-resistant inside liner are ideal for storing snacks and sandwiches. Or ChicoBag makes a reusable snack bag of rePETe fabric made entirely from recycled plastic bottles.

Reusable packing organizers (folders, cubes, envelopes, compression sacs, and a host of others) help organize, protect, and compress (in some cases). They’re functional and reusable and help wean us off plastic bags with a limited life span.

Dry bags keep moisture out and keep stuff dry. But they can also keep moisture in and protect surrounding items. There’s no need to wrap damp or dirty shoes in plastic; use a dry bag. If a swimsuit or travel towel hasn’t had a chance to dry on a travel day, pack it in a dry bag. A dry bag works well as a dirty laundry hamper to lock in the skunk of soiled clothing.

A popular packing tip seen on the internet is to use a shower cap or plastic grocery bag as a shoe bag. Both options are flimsy, of limited use, and far from sustainable. Instead, use a washable cloth bag for clean footwear and a dry bag for damp, dirty shoes. A dry bag seals in the dampness and odour, cleans easily, and is reusable.

A 3-1-1 bag is the term used in some countries to describe the container needed to bring liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes in the cabin of aircraft.

For this purpose, some airports offer zip-top bags at security checkpoints. They’re flimsy and incapable of coping with the rigours of travel. They suffer wear and tear and eventually need to be discarded. A durable, reusable, and washable 3-1-1 bag is easier on the planet.

There are several on the market. Mine is a Tom Bihn 3D Organizer Cube . When searching for a reusable 3-1-1 bag, look for one with a built-in swivel hook to hang on a towel rack, shower curtain rod, tree branch, hook, or bed frame.

Restrictions on quantities of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes contribute to plastic pollution. Millions of people buy travel-sized toiletries and discard the containers after use. Others rely on using hotel toiletries in travel-sized containers.

My suggestion? Only buy travel-sized containers of hand sanitizer, lotion, or shampoo if you plan to refill them with your favourite products. An advantage of off-the-shelf travel-sized toiletries is that the containers are usually functional and leakproof. They’re designed to work with the products inside. This means that under normal conditions, the lid doesn’t stick, the nozzle doesn’t clog, and the lid provides a leakproof seal.

Another advantage is that the manufacturer’s label clearly distinguishes the contents and saves making a label for products that look the same.

Or repurpose discarded containers such as prescription bottles, contact lens cases, and anything else having potential. Or invest in small, durable containers of various sizes and functions. Each one needs to be less than 100 ml / 3.4 oz for carry-on travel.

Then, decant from larger containers before leaving home. This is especially important for travellers with sensitivities and special needs or those loyal to specific products. You’ll

• save money because they’re easy to refill and reuse, and you’re filling them with products you already have
• use the contents with confidence because you’re using tried-and-true products from home
• not waste valuable travel time searching for products that meet your needs.

Keep in mind that toiletries have expiry and best-before dates, so build this into your purchasing and packing habits.

There are several compelling reasons to choose solid over liquid products.

• As solids, they circumvent the restrictions on liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes. This frees up space in a 3-1-1 bag.
• There are no leakages that can cause serious (and expensive) damage.
• Solids are usually lighter than their liquid counterparts.
• They last longer. There’s less likelihood of using more than is needed.
• Sometimes it’s difficult to squeeze the last of the liquid from a bottle of shampoo or conditioner. Solids can be used until the last swipe or combined with a fresh bar.
• Many are sold naked or packed in compostable paper. This helps decrease the amount of plastic waste typically associated with beauty products.
• Many are made of natural ingredients. Harsh chemicals aren’t being introduced into the environment, making them ideal for camping and places without effective wastewater systems.

Check out what’s available at local markets. If you’re purchasing online and looking for recommendations, one of my favourite soap bars is Dr Bronner’s 18-in-one Hemp Pure Castile Soap in lavender. It’s multipurpose and environmentally friendly, with no synthetic preservatives, fragrances, thickeners, or foaming agents. It can be used as body wash, face wash, shampoo, laundry soap, dish soap, or shaving cream. It lathers beautifully.

In shampoo bars, my preferences are Éthique (Sweet & Spicy Volumizing) , etee (Lavender/Chamomile), J.R. Liggett’s (Original Formula) , and Nature’s Aid (Moisturizing Mango and Tangerine).

LUSH is a popular choice. I loved the shampoo bar Honey I washed my Hair but discontinued use when I realized it contained SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and other synthetic chemicals. For an in-depth article on LUSH, see How Ethical Is Lush Cosmetics. Holly Rose Investigates .

When my hairdresser suggested my hair could benefit from not shampooing it every day, I switched to doing so every few days, depending on the climate and my level of activity. This practice has certainly extended the life of my shampoo and reduced the amount of water used when showering.

While not a single-use product, a plastic soap bar case may not be the best choice for those who travel with a soap, shampoo, or conditioner bar.

Check out the remarkable Matador FlatPack Soap Bar Case . It functions as a dry bag to keep moisture inside. Slip a wet bar inside, and it miraculously dries out within a few hours. An added advantage is that as the solid bar decreases in size, the soft-sided case does the same and takes up less space.

Another option is a lightweight tin. LUSH has square, oval, and circular containers; the circular tin from Nature’s Aid fits all their circular shampoo and conditioner bars. However, I prefer small wet-bag pouches made with PUL fabric (Polyurethane Laminate). Mine are from the online marketplace, Etsy. 

Look for lotion in plastic-free containers. As with other solid products, lotion bars offer many advantages. My favourite to date is the ClimbOn Lotion Bar (Cedar). It’s in a compostable paper tube and contains 100% natural ingredients from plants and beeswax. It works best as a hand lotion and on dry spots such as elbows and feet, but also soothes burns, rashes, and stings.

Crystal deodorant isn’t for everyone, but it works for me. Some people suggest a trial period to give the body a chance to adjust. Crystal takes up very little space and isn’t affected by airline restrictions on liquids, aerosols, gels, and powders. Just wet the top before each use, and it lasts for many months of daily use.

• Go natural. But does crystal deodorant work?

For an all-natural cream product, I like No Pong Original in a 35 g / 1.2 oz recyclable tin. Its ingredients are Coconut Oil, Baking Soda, Corn Starch, Beeswax, and a proprietary blend of 100% pure, Canadian-certified organic essential oils. Produced in both Australia and Canada, No Pong deodorant applies easily and is very effective.

Aloe vera is a natural moisturizer, rejuvenating and rebuilding healthy tissue to improve texture and elasticity. Hence the skin is firmer and more radiant. This multipurpose product naturally penetrates deep within the skin, promoting the healing of sores, cuts, rashes, bruises, frostbite, insect bites, and athlete’s foot. It’s also a natural makeup remover and shaving cream.

Look for a clear aloe vera product with high aloe vera content, few safe preservatives, and no alcohol, fragrances, or colouring.

One estimate is that around 3.5 billion toothbrushes are sold worldwide each year. The American Dental Association recommends getting a new toothbrush every three to four months. Over a lifetime, that’s a lot of discarded plastic.

Consider switching to a biodegradable bamboo alternative . Bamboo is a highly sustainable material. It’s abundant, grows quickly, and requires very little water and no fertilizer or pesticides. Less energy is used in its production, resulting in a much lower ecological footprint than plastic.

One problem with toothpaste is that it’s tubed in plastic. In the interests of packing light, I used to stock up on 18-ml travel-sized tubes that barely lasted 40 brushings. No more.

It took experimenting with tooth powders and tablets to arrive at my current and affordable favourite: GloBoid Toothpaste Tablets with Fluoride . One tablet foams beautifully and my teeth feel clean after each brushing.

Refillable dental floss containers are made of bamboo, glass, or stainless steel. Dental Lace has its compostable mulberry silk dental floss in a refillable and recyclable travel-friendly glass container. I love the compact size of the Dental Lace container, but I find the silk floss tends to shred and break without too much effort. Bamboo charcoal floss is much stronger and more durable.

Interdental picks are effective for removing unwanted debris between teeth. Unfortunately, most are made of plastic and designed for single use. For a biodegradable alternative, there are several on the market. Handles tend to be made of cornstarch or other plant-based materials, and floss of bamboo, mulberry, or nylon. I use the EcoFlosser from Clean Idea. The nylon thread is shred-resistant, and the ergonomically designed handle permits access to hard-to-reach areas. It’s surprisingly strong and highly durable. In fact, I carry a small supply and reuse them. They rinse well in water and can be easily sterilized using a denture-cleansing tablet.

The Canadian company Kooshoo makes a biodegradable plastic-free hair elastic made of organic cotton and natural rubber.

Most off-the-shelf sunscreen products contain ingredients that contribute to the destruction of coral reefs .

Unless you’re purchasing sunscreen in a jurisdiction where ‘reef-friendly’ is regulated, it’s important to read the label for reef-harming ingredients such as oxybenzone, octocrylene, parabens, and triclosan. Also, look for ‘non-nano’ as this means that there are no nano-size particles that can be ingested by corals and disrupt the marine ecosystem.

One of the attractive features of All Good SPF 50 Zinc Sunscreen Butter is that it contains only six ingredients (25% Zinc Oxide, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Beeswax, Organic Calendula Flowers infused with Organic Jojoba Oil, and Vitamin E). It comes in a handy 28 g / 1 oz biodegradable can.

LastSwab is a reusable, sustainable, and sanitary alternative to cotton swabs, buds, and Q-Tips. The rigid nylon core has a medical-grade silicone bud at each end that’s easily cleaned with soap and water. The swab is housed in a corn-based storage case and is tested to manage 1,000 uses.

If you’re hooked on traditional single-use cotton buds, choose ones with paper stems instead of plastic. Organyc uses organic cotton in their buds and cotton balls.

Tablet towels can be an effective alternative to wipes. The compressed fibre towels are small, lightweight, and compact, with a diameter of 2 cm / 0.75 in and a depth of half that. Look for ones made of bamboo; they’re more sustainable than those from wood pulp. When introduced to a little water, they explode into a compostable, durable washcloth. Carry a pre-moistened towel in a reusable zip-top silicone bag, and several dry towels in the event they’re needed to wipe down a wet surface, clean up spills, or use as a handkerchief or emergency toilet paper.

A handkerchief or reusable tissue is one of those multipurpose items that’s an eco-friendly alternative to wipes and paper tissues.

The paper-and-pulp industry is the third-largest industrial emitter of global warming gasses. In the United States alone, around 8,000,000 trees are cut each year to make facial tissues. The removal of trees leads to a loss of wildlife habitat by reducing available food and shelter. It also removes the effect the trees have of cleaning carbon emissions, producing breathable oxygen, and slowing the pace of climate change.

Thanks to Kleenex, cloth handkerchiefs have all but disappeared from everyday life. They’re still available, and at thrift shops, you might be fortunate to find some fancy hand-embroidered ones with a long history. 

LastObject (the company that produces LastSwab) makes LastTissue , a set of six reusable tissues made of 100% organic cotton and stored in a durable travel-friendly silicone case. Clean tissues are separated from used tissues by a silicone barrier. According to the company, the tissues can be washed up to 520 times each at 140°F (60°C).

For a makeup routine that involves disposable facial wipes, there are reusable options made of organic cotton or bamboo.

My machine washable rounds come from Etsy seller Lily Pads Reusable Products. In addition, LastObject offers LastRound , reusable facial rounds in a handy silicone case.

Leakproof panties can be a game-changer for those who menstruate, perspire profusely, or experience urine leakage or vaginal discharge. Commercially produced menstrual products such as tampons, pads, and associated packaging generate a lot of waste. According to Friends of the Earth , a person who menstruates is predicted to discard roughly 400 pounds (181 kilograms) of these products during their lifetime. The Canadian company Ellza claims that 12 billion pads and 7 million tampons are discarded annually, and that a sanitary pad takes 450 years to decompose.

Leakproof panties offer one way to reduce our environmental footprint and make travel more accessible for those who require leakproof underwear. My Knix Super Leakproof Bikini hold up to 8 teaspoons of liquid, the equivalent of eight regular tampons. They’re comfortable, invisible under clothing, and provide me with the confidence to deal with light bladder leaks. My Ellza Leakproof Elegance panties are just as comfortable, and absorb the equivalent of four pads. At the back, the leakproof lining extends all the way to the elasticized band.  

Friends of the Earth reports that conventional sanitary pads contain up to ninety per cent plastic. According to the Marine Conservation Society, much of this waste ends up in our oceans. The organization reports that, on average, 4.8 pieces of menstrual waste are uncovered on each 100-metre stretch of beach clean-ups. This amounts to four pads, panty liners, backing strips, and at least one tampon and applicator.

Making the switch to a reusable menstrual product is made easier with the Trade to Aid reusable sanitary pads . The organization is committed to ending period poverty around the globe. For each purchase, a pack is donated to someone in need, and profits are diverted to menstrual education programs in West Africa that help keep girls in school and women in the workforce. Each pack of reusable sanitary pads contains two light-flow pads, two medium-flow pads, two heavy-flow pads, and one waterproof wet bag.

Panty liners have many advantages, including feeling fresh during long travel days, and protection from urine leakage, vaginal discharge, and menstrual-related issues. These situations, and more, are of concern to travellers.

There are commercial varieties, some of which are oozing in plastic, but thankfully, there are alternatives. My washable panty liners made of organic cotton are not only comfortable, but they remain in place with their snap closure, unlike some commercial products with an adhesive backing. There are plenty of sellers on Etsy; I chose Lily Pads Reusable Products.

If single-use panty liners are preferred, natracare and Organyc offer a better choice than many commercial products. Their biodegradable and compostable organic cotton liners are plastic-free and packed in a cardboard carton. If you’re looking for a travel-friendly reusable pouch to protect panty liners, place a made-to-order request on Etsy.

Prepare a DIY pack of emergency toilet paper for those occasions when toilet paper isn’t available. There are lots of brands that use bamboo in their products, a highly sustainable ingredient that decomposes faster than paper. I chose three-ply Silk ‘n Soft from True Earth ; it’s absorbent and durable, and safe for septic and RV systems.

It’s pleasing to see more bamboo products on the market, including travel packs of bamboo tissues . When using them as emergency toilet paper, place them in the bin provided. They don’t dissolve as well as toilet paper and can wreak havoc on a system. 

Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other synthetic fibres — all of which are forms of plastic — now make up about 60 per cent of the material used in clothing worldwide. When these fabrics are laundered, tiny microfibres are released in varying degrees depending on the fabric. It’s estimated that 35% of microplastics in the marine environment are fibres from synthetic clothing. Choosing natural fibres over synthetics can make a significant and necessary difference in protecting our waterways and oceans. Merino wool is an all-natural sustainable product harvested from merino sheep. Because wool biodegrades in marine environments, it doesn’t contribute to microplastic pollution. Its other attributes make it a popular choice for packing light travellers.

• It’s cool in warm weather and warm in cool weather.
• Merino is soft and doesn’t itch like other woollen garments.
• It’s lightweight and doesn’t demand a lot of space.
• Merino clothing is perfect for layering up and down. When the temperature drops, wear an extra layer. When it warms up during the day, remove a layer and stuff it into a day bag.
• It’s easy to assemble a few base layers and a couple of mid-layers that work well together in a capsule wardrobe.
• It dries quickly.
• Its odour-resistant properties are legendary. For example, the same pair of merino socks can be worn for several days without washing, so there’s never a need to pack more than two pairs. The same holds for base-layer shirts that can be worn several times without washing. This translates into packing less and clothes last longer because of fewer washes.

The company Allbirds makes merino shoes in a range of styles and colours. My Allbirds Wool Runners are lightweight and comfortable, pack well, and my choice of the solid dark grey colour blends nicely with a capsule wardrobe. Besides the key ingredient of all-natural, sustainable merino wool, recycled plastic bottles are used in laces, and castor bean oil increases the natural content of insoles. Packaging comes from 90% recycled cardboard. It’s possible to wash them on a delicate cycle, then air dry. The company’s 30-day no-questions-asked exchange/return policy is hard to beat.

It was on the third day of hiking New Zealand’s Banks Track that another hiker introduced me to hiking wool . She showed me how to wrap the all-natural merino product around and between toes and over other sensitive areas. It reduced the chafing and soreness I’d experienced on previous days and it has earned a permanent place in my blister-prevention toolkit.

A travel clothesline encourages regular hand washing, a more sustainable choice than washing (and drying) by machine. It also promotes packing light. Travel clotheslines are lightweight and take up very little space. My favourite type is braided, with hooks at both ends to loop back into the clothesline when attached to fixed objects. My Design Go Go clothesline comes with suction cups that I don’t find useful. Socks or panties can be slipped inside one of the braids so clothespins aren’t needed. Other laundry can be hung over the line or a couple of the braids used to advantage.

When staying in hostels, I ask for a lower bunk where it’s easy to set up a travel clothesline. If there isn’t a privacy curtain, my travel clothesline is pressed into service to create one, with my pashmina and laundry to create a privacy screen.

If you expect to use a washing machine during your travels, an eco-strip might fit the bill. Eco-strips are lightweight, compact, and very easy to pack. If you choose a slightly scented variety, they’ll keep your packed luggage smelling fresh. Tru Earth laundry strips are a concentrated eco-friendly detergent, minus the water. A single strip weighs just 3 g / 0.1 oz but packs the same punch as 40 g / 1.4 oz of liquid or powdered detergent.

Small and delicate items will last longer if they’re washed in a laundry bag. LastObject’s laundry bag is made of 100% organic cotton. The company claims the bag can be washed 500 times or more at 60 degrees (Celsius, or 140 Fahrenheit). The bag is perfect for washing reusable tissues, handkerchiefs, panty liners, and facial rounds.

Forget the highly recommended microfibre travel towels. They’re made of 100% plastic. During washing, they shred microplastics that are too small to be filtered out by waste treatment plants, so they end up in our waterways and oceans where they destroy marine animals and the environment.

There are more sustainable alternatives. Check out the Pangea Bamboo Towel . I bought my pocket towel through a Kickstarter project and it has served me well when staying in hostels. I’ve tried microfibre towels, but they come a distant second when considering weight, space, absorbency, comfort, and ease of use. The Pangea is naturally antibacterial, biodegradable, absorbs three times more water and dries two times faster than a microfibre towel.

The company ties purchases to beach and river cleanups. Every towel purchase results in the collection of 2 lb / 0.9 kg of trash.  

A silk sleep sack works as a sleeping bag liner, a natural cocoon of bedding when the cleanliness of sleeping accommodation might be questionable. Silk is one of the most sustainable fibres; it’s renewable, biodegradable, and uses less water and energy during manufacturing than many other fibres. Mulberry silk is the highest quality silk on the market. Not only is silk sustainable, but it’s lightweight, breathable, packable, compact, and quick-drying — perfect features for hikers and carry-on travellers. It offers a measure of warmth in cold conditions or relief when it’s warm. In 42 degrees (Celsius) in Morocco (as in 107.6 degrees Fahrenheit), my silk sleep sack protected me from biting insects yet offered a cool covering. After much research, I purchased my silk sleep sack in 2013 from the family-owned New Zealand company Silk Living , producers of the Silksak . The YHA version has an insert that acts as a pillowcase and weighs just 108 g / 3.8 oz. Tech gear is far from sustainable, but smartphones and tablets can be used to lighten the load and eliminate or reduce our reliance on eco-unfriendly gear and products.

When searching for charging cables, lighten your load by choosing a minimalist cable with several attachments. The inCharge X is a 6-in-1 charging cable that’s small enough to carry in a pocket or attach to a keyring. 

For example, there are many applications (apps) that can help reduce reliance on paper products. Google Maps is more versatile than a physical map and provides real-time information on public transportation routes and schedules. A word-processing app such as MS Word can replace a journal, and apps such as Overdrive and Kindle used for audiobooks and digital books. Store tickets and itineraries in an itinerary management app (I like Kayak ‘Trips’) and use other apps to, for example, replace a physical compass, flashlight, or calculator.

The Canadian company Pela makes a range of compostable tech accessories such as cases for phones and tablets, pockets to attach to phone cases, phone grips , and Smartwatch and Fitbit bands. They also make sunglasses. Thanks to flax straw and plant‑based biopolymer materials, the products can be tossed in a backyard compost.     

The cheap earbuds distributed by airlines are of such poor quality that they’ll inevitably end up in the trash. Besides, they’re packaged in a plastic bag and many airlines charge for them.

Pack your own. I prefer in-ear headphones. They take up less space than on-ear and over-the-ear headphones, and I’ve found two Bose brands comfortable for sleeping. Unfortunately, Bose no longer makes the SoundTrue Ultra, but the SoundSport are almost as good. Their noise-cancelling cousins, Bose QuietComfort 20 , are my go-to favourites for long flights.

Rechargeable batteries are better for the environment because they can be used many more times than the typical non-rechargeable, throw-away types. But this is only if they’re used to their full potential. According to Yale Climate Connections , if a battery is recharged 50 times, its overall benefit to the environment is significant. It also means taking advantage of recycling centres. Unfortunately, many disposable batteries end up in landfills. The Sierra Club estimates that around 5 billion disposable batteries are sold in the United States every year, but less than 10 percent are recycled.

Where you have a choice, choose travel products such as digital cameras, electric toothbrushes, and flashlights with rechargeable batteries. After cell phones, flashlights are one of the biggest consumers of battery energy. A small, lightweight, rechargeable LED flashlight is indispensable for navigating at night, finding something in the dark, or checking dark corners for missing items.  Sure, phones have flashlight apps, but sometimes a flashlight is the better option. I like the compact size of the Olight I1R2 Pro 180 Lumens Rechargeable EDC Key Chain Flashlight.

A pen is a travel essential for signing or completing documents. Some authorities require that blue or black ink be used. Refillable fountain pens aren’t practical for travel, and many ballpoint pens aren’t refillable. Pilot makes a refillable product from recycled bottles. The B2P (Bottles to Pen) product is retractable, comfortable to hold, writes smoothly, and doesn’t clog or leak.

It’s unlikely that the plastic packaging on blankets and pillows distributed on planes gets recycled. To deal with fluctuations in temperature, pack a light shawl or pashmina, and a light sweater. Leave the blanket and pillow in their plastic packaging and use one as a cushion for back support. Another option is to pack a pillowcase cover and stuff it with the plastic-covered item or clothing. My pillowcase cover from Etsy seller ellebee tree works for me.

Many brands of chewing gum use polymers, synthetic plastics that don’t biodegrade. Improperly discarded gum litters streets and sidewalks, or makes its way into waterways, collecting toxins along the way. If you chew gum to deal with fluctuations in air pressure during a flight, pack a natural, biodegradable variety. There are a few on the market, including Glee and Chicza . For use as a breath freshener, consider switching to mints.

50. Other tips on sustainable travel products and packing

It will save on baggage fees, reduce emissions, lessen the chance of damage and loss, and increase your ability to walk or use public transportation. Packing light is better for you and the planet. According to Sustainable Travel International, lightening your luggage by 15 pounds (7 kilograms) decreases your emissions by about 80 pounds (36 kilograms) on a ten-hour flight. If 200 passengers on a plane all packed light, it could eliminate 16,000 pounds (7257 kilograms) of CO2.

In another example, Finnair calculated that if each passenger shaved 5 kilograms from their luggage, the total reduction, based on the airline’s traffic, could save almost 17,000 tons of CO2 emissions — the equivalent of 400 round trip flights from Helsinki to Paris.

A packing list helps avoid overpacking. It also lessens the chance of leaving something behind and needing to purchase a duplicate of what’s already owned.

Packing with time to spare offers a comfortable window to evaluate how sustainable, reusable, and wasteful each packed item may be.

Consider assembling a ‘travel wardrobe’ and set it aside for travel. It certainly makes for an easier packing experience when you can reach for tried-and-true pieces that mix and match well with each other.

The same applies to other possessions. Use what you have. There’s no need, for example, to buy a wooden comb when your lightweight plastic one has served you well, cleans easily, takes up very little space, and has several years of life left in it.

If you need to buy travel gear, add it to a shopping list. Chances are you’ll be able to take advantage of sales such as Earth Day and Cyber Monday. The other advantage is items can be combined and shipped together. This decreases the carbon footprint per ordered and shipped product. It results in fewer transport emissions and less packaging.

Seek out high-quality, sturdy gear that won’t need to be replaced on a longer trip. Then, look after it. Depending on a ‘buy-it-there’ approach to packing can result in a quick purchase of a cheap poncho, umbrella, or clothing that are easy on the purse but hard on the environment. The same applies to flip-flops, a major source of pollution. From footwear to backpacks to travel clothes, look for things that will last.

Ignore packing tips that suggest taking old underwear and other clothing pieces and discarding when they’ve outlived their usefulness. Repurpose, reuse, or recycle these items at home. Otherwise, they will probably end up as garbage at your destination because you’re unfamiliar with recycling practices or they don’t exist. We’re guests in another land with an obligation to be responsible, eco-friendly, and environmentally conscious travellers.

Include a needle and thread, some duct tape, and anything else that will allow you to repair gear on the move.

If what’s in your bag comes up short for the weather conditions or certain types of activities, visit a thrift shop and support a worthy cause in the process. It can be fun, affordable, and sustainable.

If you can’t embrace the practice of reading a digital book, pack just one print book and plan to trade with other travellers or use book exchanges. Do the same with guidebooks. If carrying a physical guidebook is your preference, leave it behind for others to use and enjoy.

When staying in accommodation without detailed instructions, bins, and containers that promote composting and recycling, bring it to the attention of hosts, hostel staff, or hotel management. When consumers insist on green products and eco-friendly solutions, the market will respond accordingly.

Become a trash hero or join the Adventure Bag Crew . Joining a clean-up activity is a worthwhile activity and an opportunity to meet other like-minded travellers and residents.

Support local products, merchants, and services at home and abroad. Help shorten the supply chain and keep more tourist dollars in local economies.

To your list of language basics, add some phrases that help you say no to plastic cutlery, straw, or grocery bag in the language of your destination.

Choosing an ice-cream cone over a cup is the zero-waste option; there’s zero container or utensil waste. Or, when ordering pizza, ask that the “little white plastic piece” not be placed in the box. It’s a ‘pizza saver,’ designed to prevent the box lid from touching the pizza toppings. Or repurpose it into a handy phone stand. Avoid pod-based coffee machines and the waste they create (unless the pods are compostable or refillable).

Do what you can to reduce waste and accept that there will be times when waste can’t be avoided. Look for opportunities to extend the life of, say, a plastic bread bag by using it for dirty laundry, muddy shoes, or carrying your waste (and other trash you pick up) until it can be appropriately discarded.

Inspire others by celebrating your small successes with photos and dedicated hashtags such as #thereisnoplanetb, #choosetorefuse, #passonplastic, and #zerowaste.

Packing sustainably needn’t be overwhelming. You’ll likely have plastic containers in your luggage, pack environmentally unfriendly gear you’ve had for some time, and travel with eco-unfriendly electronics. But, if we can try harder to reduce a few more single-use plastics and convince others to do the same, these are small steps in the right direction.

Let’s make ‘rethink — refuse — reuse — reduce — rechoose — repair — recycle’ part of our travel-and-packing plans and habits.

Great eco-friendly product reviews. reusable eating utensils are a must for travel and work and dry bags keep important items dry without going through numerous plastic bags.

Perhaps the single biggest (and easiest!) sustainable travel tip I have up my sleeve is this water bottle that rolls up and tucks into your bag (or literally up your sleeve)!

This water bottle goes with me everywhere. Whether I tuck it into a pocket, wrap it around my wrist, slip it into my carry-on bag, or slide it into my over-the-shoulder holster (see below).

This water bottle has helped me stay completely free of single-use plastic water bottles for nearly three years – even while traveling full time! The Nomader is a crucial addition to your green packing list.

There is no doubt that the pandemic has changed so many things about the way that we travel. One of the things that makes me endlessly sad is the increased use of single-use plastic. It’s everywhere.

One of the best ways to avoid single-use plastic is to carry your own cups.

On a recent month-long road trip in a camper van, I used this collapsible coffee cup by Stojo every single day. OK. You got me. I used it multiple times a day. The Stojo cup also doubles as an excellent beer or wine cup.

I carry a bendable wine glass that folds easily into the front pocket of my carry-on bag. I use it all of the time, but especially on flights.

I try to use trains as much as possible, but as a full-time traveler, I am on enough planes in any given year to seriously challenge my individual effort at carbon neutrality.

It may seem like a small thing, but can you imagine if we all refused to use the single-use plastic cups that hold our wine, beer, or soda on a plane? Airlines would be forced to make a change.

Flight attendants are usually very surprised when I ask them to fill up my reusable glass, but they often thank me and confide that it’s really hard to throw away so many plastic cups after every single flight.

Because plastic recycling differs in every locality, most of the time it’s only paper products that get recycled after a flight. More often than not the cups that we use for our drink service are going straight into the trash.

This is the set of travel wine glasses that my friends and I have started to bring on every girls’ trip. We pass the cups out to anyone who doesn’t already have one.

I’ve watched this sustainable travel tip save countless single-use plastic cups. Especially on trips to New Orleans and Las Vegas where plastic cocktail glasses are everywhere.

Tip:   The best way to reduce your onboard waste is to carry your trash off the plane and recycle it yourself. If you are drinking soda or beer, ask to drink it straight out of the can. Then save the can and recycle it when you leave. If the wine is in one of those individual bottles, ask for the bottle and recycle it yourself.

In the picture below, I am holding my Nomader foldable water bottle along with my travel wine cup, but I have yet a third cup in the pocket of those pants ( the pants are eco-conscious as well! )

The third cup is for the food that I plan to consume at the festival or at the food truck. This cup folds completely flat and will substitute as a plate or bowl.

When I am carrying a purse or a backpack, I bring along both a cup and a bowl like the foldable set sold from Sea to Summit .

In a circumstance (like a festival) when I can’t carry a bag, this small cup is the perfect sustainable travel solution for plastic-free eating on the go. It takes a little extra work, yes, but I always find a vendor who will fill my cup with food rather than handing me a single-use box or plastic container.

4. Bamboo utensils are a go-to sustainable travel product

Along with the foldable cup and bowl that I carry, I always have my bamboo utensil set so that I never need to use plastic forks and knives. This durable set comes with chopsticks and a straw, and it has a convenient carabiner so you can hang it on your backpack, purse, or over-the-shoulder water bottle holster .

5. A reusuable, collapsible box for leftovers helps reduce waste

Speaking of taking things to-go, the following sustainable travel tip is one of my favorites. Whether I’m at home or on the road, the Stojo Grab-and-Gox box almost always comes with me if I eat at a restaurant so that I can carry out my leftovers without using a single-use container.

All of the same eco-conscious and safety-conscious qualities of the Stojo collapsible coffee cup are true of the grab-and-go box. But did I mention that Stojo products are also dishwasher safe?! The grab-and-go box is just $16 from Stojo .

6. Traveling with your own towels is a savvy sustainable travel move

I learned this valuable lesson while walking a 500-mile pilgrimage across Spain. Bringing your own towels will always ensure you can quickly get clean on the road or take an impromptu dip on a hike. The following towels and wipes are now crucial items both for my Camino de Santiago packing list and for my standard packing list.

There are three types of towels to travel with:

Wilderness Wipes

• Clean surfaces (or your body) sustainably
• Compost after using
• Wipe down planes or trains before settling in
• Great for an improvised shower while backpacking
• Perfect for in-between shower days in the van
• Ideal for early morning flights when you can’t shower

Note:  Though Wildnerness Wipes are compostable, they should not be left on the ground while hiking. Practice Leave No Trace principles. It’s best to actually compost the wipes rather than throw them away, so I carry my used wipes in a repurposed plastic bag or tin until I find a composting facility or farm. I’ve even carried them all the way home before. Unfortunately, the package is not compostable.

Tip:  Even when I do opt to use the towels provided by a hotel or hostel, I always opt-out of room service to conserve water.

Bonus Tip:  To reduce plastic consumption when staying in a hotel, remove the plastic bag from one garbage bin and collect all of your trash in that bin. Take out your own trash and replace the unused plastic bag in the bin before you leave.

I’m seriously jealous of anyone who has eco-conscious packing cubes, which may just be the foundation of all sustainable travel products packed into your suitcase.

Long before I realized the importance of traveling sustainably, I purchased my packing cubes and, while not made sustainably, they have changed the way I pack. Now my bag is beautifully organized.

But if I could do it over again, I would buy this pack of three packing cubes made from recycled polyester from the sustainable company tentree .

The tentree packing cubes are such a good sustainable travel product at such a good price (just $31 for all three cubes) that they are often sold out.

If that’s the case, try the Patagonia clamshell cubes .

While these are a little more expensive at $29-$49 (depending on size) per cube, they are seriously durable and made from 100 percent recyclable material.

I’m telling you, packing cubes will change the way you pack forever!

8. Solid shampoo, conditioner & lotion bars

Let’s start with solid lotion bars because this is one of my favorite sustainable toiletry solutions.

I’ve tried a lot of lotion bars, and back when I was testing them all out, my favorite solution was the Moon Valley Organics Herbal lotion bar . It sells for $15.99 on Amazon or $11.99 from the sustainable online marketplace EarthHero .

But I mostly make my own lotion bars now! It’s so easy, and you can play with the formula that works best for your skin. Here’s my YouTube video detailing this seriously easy sustainable solution:

Solid shampoo and conditioner bars.

Going solid with your shampoo and conditioner bars just makes a ton of sense. Shampoos and conditioners are made of more than 90 percent water anyway.

Why not use a chemical-free bar that isn’t contained in a hard-to-recycle plastic container – and then mix it with the water from your shower?

That’s exactly the sentiment that inspired Brianne West to start making shampoo and conditioner bars in her kitchen when she was a college student. Now her business, ethique , is a go-to for sustainable toiletry solutions! She makes my favorite shampoo and conditioner bars, which can be found on Amazon for $22.30 for the hair-care set .

9. Sustainable travel products for dental care

• Use toothpaste tablets instead of hard-to-recycle-tubes
• Opt for plastic-free dental floss
• Use plastic-free lip balm

Toothpaste tablets

I’m using toothpaste tablets from by Humankind because they make my life a little easier with a subscription program. Every month, I get new toothpaste tablets in the mail in a recyclable envelope. by Humankind offsets the carbon footprint from shipping by investing in forest preservation projects.

The toothpaste is $15 for a two-pack and a mini glass container or you can subscribe for $12 (the container is free with a subscription), and two refill packets will come to you every month.

Tip:  I travel a lot so I tend to avoid subscriptions because I don’t have an address to send the products. But it’s seriously easy to manage your deliveries through the by Humankind online portal. Plus, I love it when they email me to say that my toothpaste is on the way because they also tell me how much plastic I kept out of the ocean by shopping for their sustainable travel products.

Plastic-free dental floss

Most dental floss is made out of nylon, which is, you guessed it plastic. Often floss is coated in a synthetic wax coating that is made from petroleum. And all of that comes packaged in a tiny little plastic container this is nearly impossible to recycle. GAH!

My favorite dental floss is the organic floss made by Radius that comes in a paper holder. Pros: It’s really cost-effective at $12 for a sustainable floss pack of three from Amazon and it is the best floss I’ve ever used in terms of comfort.

Cons: On my most recent order, the floss came wrapped in plastic. You can try to tell the folks at Amazon to stop wrapping your plastic-free items in plastic, but that doesn’t always work.

Tip:  Remove your sustainable floss from the paper packaging when traveling. This makes it super tiny for packing in your toiletry bag or toothbrush container.

For my next floss purchase, I’m going to add this sustainable travel product to my subscription at by Humankind:

The floss is the same deal as by Humankind’s sustainable toothpaste tablets. The biodegradable, ethically-made floss coated in vegan wax is $12 and the plastic-free container is $3. Or you can get the container for free with a $12 per-order subscription. In this case, the delivery options are every six, eight, or 10 weeks.

Sustainable, plastic-free lip balm

We go through SO MUCH chapstick, right? And we tend to lose the darn plastic containers all over the place, right? So why not purchase chapstick that comes in paper containers?

It’s ethique again for the win on the sustainable chapstick solution! Their new lip balm line contains no plastic. It’s also ethically made. Sells for $8.50 from ethique or $8.99 from Amazon .

Not so fun fact: More than 200 million plastic chapstick tubes are tossed into the garbage every year.

10. Your sustainable sunscreen solution

This is a crucial sustainable travel product. I use the tinted sunscreen on my face every day, and I carry the larger tin in my carry-on when traveling.

Both the pants and the top pictured are from one of my favorite companies. Sozy donates 10% of profits to survivors of sexual violence and another 10% to charitable and environmental initiatives. This female-founded company is climate-neutral certified, a certified B Corporation, and a member of the 1% for the Planet club.

The sunglasses are made of bamboo from the sustainable brand WearPanda. WearPanda is a member of the 1% club, meaning at least one percent of profits are donated to environmental causes.

Rothy’s shoes are amazing. The thread for the shoes is made from plastic water bottles. Algae-based material is used for under the insole. Outsoles are made with 35% natural and renewable materials. Insoles contain 30% plant-based oil and recycled rubber. Rothy’s plans to “close the loop” by making every pair of shoes recyclable!

Best Travel Size Toiletries

In packing for any trip, there are certain things you can cut back on and leave at home, however devastating it may seem. And while I’m fine cutting back and leaving some things at home, obviously not everything can stay behind. So I’ve been focusing more on finding the best travel containers that are refillable – generic and brand specific.

Here are my favorite things that come in mini refillable containers, as well as a few containers for filling the rest and a few sustainable alternatives that save space! I’m rather big on using the same items and brands of things I use at home on the go, but I understand that has its limitations.

Choosing smaller, refillable containers is just one of my easy sustainable travel tips !

Best Travel Containers

There are so many travel bottles out there, but after too many ‘explosions’ of my shampoo I’m always leery of those “leak-proof” claims.

Hilariously enough, my cowboy boots were assaulted by some explosive shampoo on one return trip. I was initially devastated but now I love that it’s turned into a worn look. And I have a fun story to share when I wear them.

Anyway, since you can’t always count on the trendy distressed look to save you from an explosion gone wrong and because we (i.e. me) are trying to cut back on size and weight of luggage, let’s talk refillable travel containers!

When it comes to refillable travel bottles, I prefer silicone ones – not the hard-sided ones because I find them easier to use and clean.

My most trusted brand is GoToob by Humangear. We got ours from this brand about 10 years ago and still use them.

You can get the 3-pack of the 3.4oz. bottles on Amazon , Target , and from The Container Store . There are also 1.7oz containers .

The packs of 3 usually include three different colors (though you can get all clear and I’ve seen all black). I love these GoToobs for 2 reasons. Well, actually 3!

The FIRST is that they have never, ever exploded or leaked on me. I always put my shampoo and conditioner in them and for at least 10 years, I’ve never had a problem.

SECOND, there is an identifier on the cap with sham, cond, sun, lotion, and soap in addition to a blank space. Just twist it to the right product. You’ll never accidentally put sunscreen in your hair again!

THIRD, the bottles are squishy, so it’s far easier to get all the product out. This is crucial when you’re on the last days of a long trip. So many travel size bottles are hard-sided so you end up pulling a muscle trying to force it down to the opening!

The squishy factor (clearly a technical term!), is also great because that means the containers will be able to bend more and take up less space as you use more product!

The same brand also sells GoTubbs which are little container perfect for pills, jewelry, and anything little you like. They aren’t leak proof, but it’s a good way to store some essentials!

Target sells a similar travel containers for kids with adorable penguins ! I’d use these too as an adult and they even have the identifiers.

I recently stumbled on these refillable travel containers that have airless pumps and are made of recycled plastic. I obviously can’t vouch for them, but I love the idea for hair care and beauty products!

Refillable Haircare for Travel

I have a long list of reasons I love Innersense hair care , but on that list is that they have refillable, miniature bottles of most of their line – not just shampoo and conditioner. And if that weren’t enough, these 2 oz. hair care bottles are also made of recycled plastic !

For this upcoming trip, I purchased (because I use them the most) the following hair styling refillable containers.

Now, while Innersense offers travel sizes of the shampoo and conditioner I use, and I could even just use one of the refillable travel containers above, I’m actually planning to take small shampoo and conditioner bars !

Refillable Skincare for Travel

Many companies are starting to come out with miniature sizes of their product,s but the key is finding ones that are refillable (and easily refillable at that). Anything with a screw-on lid is great as it lets you refill easily. Further if the full size option can dispense easily without changing the formula or consistency, you’re golden!

My current skincare options are almost completely refillable, which more than a little freakin’ fabulous!

Check out my Beautycounter product review here and you’ll see just how much I love my Beautycounter skincare regimen. They often sell a carryon set of their countertime regimen . Each of the items comes in a completely refillable container (with Beautycounter or any other product). The collection includes a cleansing oil, toning water, serum, face cream, and an overnight cream containers – totally fine for any brand.

I also recently tried the Activist skincare , a completely refillable, clean skincare line. Their trial kit comes with refillable, travel sizes, and I’m excited to take the serum and face oil in these small containers with droppers. I’ve traveled with them, and they don’t leak, so I’m quite happy.

Refillable Travel Perfume Bottle

Since a big glass bottle is heavy and breakable, not to mention the weight of all the liquid – this is a great place to cut back.

You want to look for a mini spray bottle or atomizer. I’ve found quite a few selection on Etsy from glass to aluminum and bamboo casings. This bamboo perfume spray bottle is attractive because it isn’t breakable and has a sleek cover for the spray button!

My favorite nontoxic perfume also come in rollerballs , which are basically the size of a tube of chapstick.

Travel Size Makeup?

Some makeup brands offer mini sizes of their products, but they usually aren’t refillable at all. I do support the downsizing of your suitcase, but at the cost of even more beauty empties to make sure you recycle properly …I don’t think it’s worth it.

So rather than makeup minis, I’d use refillable containers as much as you can (think foundation in a small tub or container) and think about just downsizing the amount of makeup you’ll be taking on a trip. See my complete clean makeup routine here .

Additionally, I have luck saving the items from the “gifts with purchase” for my remaining travel size toiletry needs. And when you really strike out with the above options, get some sealed containers and make your own mini size.

For those things you can’t live without, check out Sephora’s extensive minis section . IT’S HUGE!!! They have just about everything and a long list of clean beauty brands via Sephora online and in store .

The options for travel size toiletries, cosmetics, and shampoo bottles are actually quite numerous. You just might need to do a little research. Remember that you can only take up to 3.4 oz. of any one item through TSA. Most makeup items are actually much smaller. And remember you can always use the GoToobs and GoTubbs to downsize for your trip!

Unwto 2021: a year in review, 2021: tourism united, resilient and determined.

2021 has been a year of learning and adapting for tourism. It has proven that only by working together can the sector overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.

Gathering the global tourism community and developing concrete actions, UNWTO has led tourism’s response with the vision of not only restarting, but doing so in a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable way.

January - March

As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .  

April - June

Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region. 

July - September

As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of  digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. But UNWTO also looked ahead, to a more sustainable future , working with key partners to  reduce plastic waste and consumption across every part of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.

October - December

The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.

Growing and Moving Forward

UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.

Leaving Nobody Behind

The pledge to ‘ leave nobody behind ’ means nobody should miss out : Not now as we support the sector in the face of crisis, and not in the future as tourism starts again. Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. And that’s why we turn words into actions, delivering guidelines and action plans , to ensure everyone can enjoy the opportunities tourism brings.

A Shared Vision

Advancing the transformation of the tourism sector , partnerships are the only way forward. In 2021, UNWTO signed agreements with international organizations and the private sector to step our vision for the future of tourism: innovation , education , sustainability , green investment , rural development.

World Tourism Barometer: September 2022

UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022

Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :

• The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
• International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
• Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
• The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
• The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.

2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.

It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.

– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.

– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.

Sustainable Development Sector Being Launched on Moscow Exchange

The Moscow Exchange has announced the opening of the Sustainable Development Sector. This is a landmark event for the development of a sustainable finance (including green finance) market in Russia.

The Guidelines for the Development of the Russian Financial Market for 2019 - 2021 mentioned the need to consider developing a national system for sustainable financial instruments. Further, the road map for the formation of a green finance market in Russia suggested the creation of a separate green bond sector on a stock exchange. 1

The Russian sustainability agenda is taking a step up to the next level in building infrastructure for a sustainable finance market.

Sustainable Development Sector

The Sustainable Development Sector on the Moscow Exchange is comprised of three different segments: 1) Green Bonds, 2) Social Bonds and 3) National Projects. Bonds, issued either by Russian or foreign issuers, can be included in the Sustainable Development Sector, provided that a set of requirements is met, as described in the new edition of the Listing Rules of the Moscow Exchange. 2 The key requirements encompass alignment with certain standards/principles, or financing objectives, and confirmation of such alignment, and the disclosure of information. Furthermore, the intended use of the proceeds is to be set out in the issuance documents.

Green and Social Bonds

The bonds will be included in the Green Bonds or Social Bonds segments, provided that the issuance, the issuer 3 or the project correspond to the green or social finance principles or standards, being either: 1) the Green Bond Principles of the International Capital Markets Association (ICMA), or the principles/standards of the Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI), or 2) the Social Bond Principles by the ICMA, respectively. 4

In other words, the Green Bonds segment can host bonds issued to (re)finance green projects, such as projects in the sphere of renewable energy, energy efficiency, pollution prevention and control (including waste recycling), clean transportation, climate change adaptation and green buildings. The Social Bonds segment, in turn, can host bonds issued to (re)finance social projects, such as projects pertaining to affordable basic infrastructure (clean drinking water, transport, energy, etc.), access to essential services (health, education, etc.) or affordable housing.

Alignment with the above principles or standards is to be confirmed by an independent external review issued by one of the eligible providers. The list of eligible external review providers is set out in the Listing Rules of the Moscow Exchange, which contains more than 40 companies, including Russian and foreign companies (such as ISS-Oekom, Sustainalytics, Vigeo Eiris, CICERO, Eco Vadis).

Bonds Issued to Implement National Projects

Bonds will be included in the segment of National Projects, provided that the issuance, the issuer or the project align with the goals and deliverables of one of the national projects, in particular, those pertaining to ecology, housing, modernization of the trunk infrastructure, education, health, or pertaining to a federal project which incorporates the implementation of the best available techniques (BAT).

The implementation of BAT at industrial facilities having a significant negative impact on the environment is one of the aims of the national project called "Ecology". 5 However, the implementation of BAT standards will entail large costs for the relevant enterprises. Therefore, it is expected that they will issue bonds (among other financing) as a way of raising the required funds. State subsidies are envisaged to support such enterprises (by compensating them for some part of the coupon yield payments). Although such bonds are often referred to as green bonds in the press, these will in fact rather be quasi-green bonds or transition bonds. 6 That is why, in our view, it is quite reasonable for them to be included in a separate segment, rather than the green bonds segment.

Alignment with the goals of the national projects is to be confirmed by the decisions of the relevant state bodies, state officials or interagency committees. For example, for bonds issued to finance BAT implementation projects, presumably, it could be a decision of an interagency committee on the selection of projects for the purposes of granting subsidies. 7

Disclosure of Information

An independent external review or information about the above state bodies' decisions is to be published on a web page provided by one of the information agencies authorized to disclose information in the securities market, as well as on the website of the Moscow Exchange. 8

Moreover, maintaining the listing of bonds in the relevant segment requires that the reports on the proper use of proceeds be published at least once a year while the bonds are in circulation.

Recent Issuances of Green Bonds

The Sustainable Development Sector has been created amid the growing interest of Russian issuers in attracting green financing (aligned with international principles) both in the domestic and international markets: 9

• December 2018: The issuance of green bonds by RSB KHMAO to finance a concession project pertaining to waste management. This is the first issuance of green bonds in Russia based on ICMA Green Bond Principles;
• May 2019: The issuance of green Eurobonds by Russian Railways to finance the acquisition of electric trains. These are the first green Eurobonds from Russia, and the first bonds from Russia certified by the Climate Bonds Initiative.

Sustainability Indices, Non-financial Reporting and Rules for Issuance of Green Bonds

Notably, earlier in 2019, the Moscow Exchange joined the global Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative. Moreover, in cooperation with the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP), the Moscow Exchange started calculating sustainability indices on a daily basis. 10 These two MOEX - RSPP stock indices are as follows: 1) Responsibility and Transparency Index, and 2) Sustainable Development Vector Index. Both indices are calculated based on an annual analysis of non-financial reports of the largest Russian companies, and include companies that 1) fully disclose information on sustainable development and corporate social responsibility, and 2) show the best dynamics in sustainable development and corporate social responsibility as compared to the previous year.

Currently, a number of large Russian companies disclose non-financial reports at their own initiative. However, a draft law "On Public Non-Financial Reporting" has been developed, requiring state companies, large companies whose assets or profits exceed a certain threshold, as well as companies whose securities are quoted on a stock exchange, to prepare and disclose annual non-financial reports (covering ESG indicators, among others). Non-financial reports will need to be prepared and disclosed on a "comply or explain" basis.

Furthermore, the drafts of new editions to the Issuance Standards and the Regulation on Disclosure of Information by Issuers have been prepared, setting out the peculiarities of issuances and disclosures with respect to green bonds. According to these draft sub-laws, a "green bond" tag implies that the bond proceeds are applied to (re)finance projects that provide clear environmental benefits and are aligned with the internationally recognized principles of green financing.

In our view, all the developments noted above – i.e. the creation of a separate Sustainable Development Sector on the Moscow Exchange, the pilot green bond issuances, the daily calculation of stock sustainability indices and forthcoming legislative changes in relation to green bonds and non-financial reports – all confirm the firm commitment of the country's and the market participants' intention to develop the sustainable finance market in Russia.

This will hopefully all contribute to an increase in the investment attractiveness of Russian companies giving due consideration to sustainability aspects and implementing projects that provide environmental and/or social benefits, apart from financial benefits.
