Tanzania Safari - Compare 4,540 Tours

Tanzania is one of Africa’s top safari destinations. The wildlife viewing is out of this world and big cats are especially easy to see. All members of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) can be found in various Tanzanian parks and reserves, and all five are present in the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. Almost 40% of the country is protected and set aside for conservation, which means that it’s easy to go on a Tanzania safari for 2 full weeks and drive from park to park while rarely leaving the bush.

8 Questions About Tanzania Safaris

Philip Briggs

Answered by

Philip briggs.

tanzania animal safari

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

“A Tanzania safari can be booked throughout the year, but the best time depends on your interests. If seeing the wildebeest migration is the main focus of your visit, you will have to plan carefully. June to October is the best period to see the migration in the Serengeti, but you’ll have to stay in different areas of the park at different stages of the migration, and as this all depends on the rain, this isn’t completely dependable. If you want to get away from the crowds, you should book your accommodation in the Serengeti away from the wildebeest migration. The wettest months are March to May, and any safari might be compromised at this time.”

Why visit Tanzania, what are the major attractions?

“Tanzania is the quintessential safari destination, offering both quality and quantity. The wildlife viewing is superb and there is just so much choice in terms of places to visit and things to do. In fact, it would be hard to experience all of the highlights even in three Tanzania holidays, let alone one. There are three distinct safari circuits: the most popular Northern safari circuit includes famous places such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The lesser-known Southern circuit centers on Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) and Ruaha National Park. The off-the-beaten-track Western circuit includes Katavi National Park and the chimpanzee reserves on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. Avid mountain climbers might be surprised to learn the highest peak in Africa is in Tanzania. Mt Kilimanjaro lies between Kenya and Tanzania but is climbed from the Tanzanian side.”

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

“Tanzania tours are not geared toward big groups. The best way to see the parks is on a bespoke safari for two or four people who book together as a family or group of friends, though that obviously comes at a price. You should budget a starting price of US$500 per person per day, but it is difficult to put a specific figure on a trip, as a lot of variables need to be taken into account. For example, camping safaris are generally cheaper than lodge safaris. Conversely, the Serengeti and some other parks in the Northern circuit have big hotels that are much cheaper than the small, exclusive lodges and tented camps – although the latter are often more basic. The season makes a big difference too. Discounted rates apply if you are willing to travel in the rainy season, while you’ll pay a premium to visit during the height of the wildebeest migration.”

How is the wildlife viewing in Tanzania?

“The wildlife viewing in Tanzania is superb. A Tanzania safari in the Northern circuit takes in Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Any of these parks offer fantastic game viewing, although some of it is seasonal. Doing the whole circuit enhances the experience as you’ll be going through a variety of habitats and environments. Due to the sizes of the parks, it is possible to get away from the crowds, but as the Northern circuit is the most popular circuit, you will be surrounded by other tourists at times. If you really want to get away from all that, you can visit the Southern circuit, where the game viewing is slightly more challenging but very good all the same. This circuit is perhaps more suited to repeat Africa visitors who are less driven to tick off the Big Five.”

How safe is Tanzania for tourists?

“Tanzania has a slick and experienced tourist industry, and a Tanzanian safari overall is very safe. That said, there is a lot of petty crime in big cities such as Dar es Salaam, so walking around alone isn’t recommended. Tourists sometimes get targeted in Arusha and other urban tourist hot spots, but most of the time the hassle is benign and is really just touts wanting to sell things (anything from safaris to beaded necklaces). Being firm and standing your ground is usually all it takes to diffuse any situation. In any case, most people on Tanzanian tours don’t spend very much (or any) time in urban centers, so none of this is likely to be a concern.”

How do I select a reliable Tanzanian tour operator?

“Tanzania is a popular African safari destination and many large reputable operators working in Africa sell Tanzanian holidays. Most operators offer pretty much the same packages and the differences will mostly lie in the quality of the guides and vehicles. If you have a special interest, you might want to do some research and look for operators catering to that; for example, some packages are more geared toward walking safaris or fly camping (where the whole camp gets set up for you at a special private campsite). You can compare Tanzania safari prices and packages on SafariBookings.com. Always read the reviews as they will give you a good indication of reliability and the quality of the guides.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“The safari industry in Tanzania is well established and there is a good variety of accommodation on offer. Going with an outfitter offering comfortable camping safaris is not only the most budget-friendly way to travel, but it also adds to the sense of adventure. If real camping isn’t your thing, but you like the romance of tented accommodation, there are tented camps (with actual beds and flushing toilets inside) offering different levels of luxury. For those visitors that prefer to spend their evenings in less of a bush environment, there are hotels that provide a total disconnect from the countryside, which also means less chance of creepy-crawlies in your room. The current trend, however, is toward exclusive designer lodges blending into the environment and offering an unparalleled level of luxury and service. The sky is the limit!”

What can I expect from a safari in Tanzania?

“When on a Tanzania tour, you can expect an experience of a lifetime – or maybe the first of many more to come. Once the safari bug has bitten, people tend to return over and over again to experience the African bush. It is hard to stay away for too long. Tanzania is the perfect destination for first-time safaris as the wildlife viewing and African landscapes in the Northern circuit are all you could hope for, and more. Tanzania is also the perfect destination for repeat visitors, as your first visit won’t even scratch the surface of the touring options. Seasoned African safari enthusiasts will enjoy some of the more remote parks, with different animals such as African wild dogs in the Southern circuit and chimpanzees in the west.”

Where to go

Along with neighbouring Kenya , Tanzania is one of Africa's classic safari destinations, most famous for the great wildebeest migration where a herd of some two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle make their epic annual journey—with numerous predators hot on their heels.

But while the migration steals the lion's share (groan!) of the attention, there's a great deal more to the country, both in its range of wildlife and non-safari action. Beyond the Big Five, you'll find world-class birdwatching, some of the best chimpanzee tracking anywhere in Africa, history and beaches on the coast, and some incredible trekking at Kilimanjaro.

Figuring out where to go, when to go, and what to do can be tricky, so here's our essential guide to the best safaris in Tanzania. Dig in and discover the magic of Tanzania, you're in for a ride!

One of the natural world's most iconic events: wildebeest making a perilous river crossing in Tanzania

Our experts' recommended parks and camps

Serengeti national park, tarangire national park, ngorongoro conservation area, lake manyara national park, nyerere national park, ruaha national park, katavi national park, mahale mountains national park, arusha national park, lake natron.

See the migration in the Serengeti

See the migration in the Serengeti

The big-ticket park is the 12,000-square-mile Serengeti, home to the famed wildebeest migration and a healthy population of big cats: lions, leopards and cheetahs. During peak season— July and August—when the famous wildebeest river crossings coincide with northern hemisphere summer holidays, the park can be very busy.

There are four main regions in the Serengeti; the Western Corridor, the Seronera Valley, Lobo/Kogatende in the north, and the Southern Plains.

There are several private reserves and conservancies around the Serengeti that offer the same wildlife experience but without the crowds—such as the Grumeti Reserve—but you’ll have to pay top dollar to stay there.

At the heart of the Serengeti lies the Seronera River and surrounding valley. This is a good area for year-round big cats and grazing herbivores.

The northern regions of Kogatende and Lamai, on the banks of the Mara River, are further off the beaten path and are good for catching the famed river crossings during summer months with far fewer tourists than across the border in Kenya's Masai Mara .

Elephants and baobabs in Tarangire

Elephants and baobabs in Tarangire

Tarangire, just south of the bird haven Lake Manyara, is the antidote to the crowds of the Serengeti. There are large herds of elephants, huge baobab trees, lions and even wild dogs. In the dry season, the park has a particularly high concentration of mammals. July to October are the best months for big game viewing, outside these months the park is pleasantly quiet.

As with the Serengeti, there are some private reserves around the national park, offering more exclusivity, generally at a higher cost.

Incredible views at Ngorongoro

Incredible views at Ngorongoro

The other major tourist attraction in the Northern Circuit is the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and thought to be the world’s largest inactive, intact volcanic caldera that isn’t filled with water. The crater is home to an estimated 25,000 large animals, including elephants, giraffes, lions and black rhinos.

It's a year-round location for wildlife, although the crater gets crowded during peak months. Aside from its wildlife, the wider conservation area is also a great place for hiking and trekking .

There are no camps inside the crater, but some perch up on the rim, with incredible views. It’s also possible to stay further out in the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area and do a day-trip into the crater. Look for accommodation close to the access road to maximise your time.

Tree-climbing lions at Lake Manyara

Tree-climbing lions at Lake Manyara

Just to the north of Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park is a narrow, deeply forested strip of land that sits in the shadow of a dramatic wall in the Great Rift escarpment.

The lake is a haven for some 350 species of waterbirds and the park is famous for its population of tree-climbing lions, as well as one of Tanzania’s most-studied elephant populations. In addition to wildlife drives, walking safaris are possible, and there’s a treetop walkway that takes you up into the forest canopy.

Off the beaten track in Nyerere

Off the beaten track in Nyerere

Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is one of the largest protected areas in Africa at 19,000 square miles – bigger than Switzerland. With only a few camps, it feels far more remote than the northern parks.

As well as lions, leopards, elephants, black rhinos, hippos and buffalos, Nyerere is a key area for endangered wild dogs. Poaching has led to a massive decline in species such as elephants – so although there are many animals to see, they’re not as densely populated as in the Serengeti, for example.

What really sets Nyerere apart is the sheer range of activities you can do here: walking, boating and photo safaris, fly-camping, the list goes on. It costs a pretty penny, especially compared to the more touristy northern circuit, but if you're looking for something truly different, this may be for you.

Walking safaris in Ruaha National Park

Walking safaris in Ruaha National Park

Wild and remote Ruaha, Tanzania's largest national park, is home to scattered baobabs, grasslands and rolling hills. Along with Nyerere it's the main stop on Tanzania's 'southern circuit' although it draws a fraction of the visitors as the country's northern hotspots.

Arguably better for wildlife spotting than Nyerere (and more affordable too), Ruaha has a whopping 11 per cent of the world's wild lion population, along with massive herds of elephants and grazers.

There are cheetah, leopards and wild dogs here too, all along with relatively few tourists. You’ll find a mixture of luxury lodges and basic fly-camping operations for walking safaris – the park's speciality.

Katavi – Tanzania's hidden gem

Katavi – Tanzania's hidden gem

The third largest national park in Tanzania, but with a fraction of the visitors, Katavi feels very distant from the likes of the Serengeti. Indeed, it is estimated that Katavi gets as many visitors in an entire year as the Serengeti draws per day .

In the dry season, there are great wildlife spotting opportunities, with big herds of buffalos, lions, elephants and lots of plains game (topis, zebras and impalas).

With just a handful of small camps in the park and in the adjoining game reserves of Rukwa, Luafi and Lukwati, there will be few other vehicles with which to contend.

See chimpanzees at Mahale Mountains

See chimpanzees at Mahale Mountains

On the sandy banks of Lake Tanganyika, Mahale is a mountainous park known for its habituated chimpanzees you can visit in the forest. There are other primates – from vervets to the red colobus monkey – and the driest months (August to October) are the best time to trek through the forest.

There is a scattering of camps and lodges from where you can organise chimp trekking , including one ‘barefoot luxury’ option, Greystoke Mahale, and a government-run backpackers at the park HQ.

Bush Rover Migration Camp

Bush Rover Migration Camp

The quirkiest mobile camp, and absolutely one of my favourites places to stay anywhere in Tanzania, is Bush Rover Migration Camp. This consists of six double-story standing tents built around the converted Land Rovers used to transport them between different locales. The ground-floor toilet and shower for each unit is actually built into the Land Rover, while the upper floor comprises a canvas bedroom with a balcony from which you can safely watch passing wildlife or stargaze after dark. The camp sets up in the southern Serengeti over December to March for the calving season, before relocating the Western Corridor to catch the northward migration over June to mid-July, then heading further north, along with the wildebeest, to the Mara River area over August to October.

Serengeti Safari Camp

Serengeti Safari Camp

Marc Harris

Marc Harris

Among the absolute top of my recommendations for mobile camps is Nomad Tanzania's Serengeti Safari Camp. This top-end camp moves around five times per season to keep up with the constantly changing wildebeest migration . Accommodation is in classic safari-style canvas tents, and the guides are second to none. You'll want to stay around three of four nights here, and the camp is usually within close reach of an airstrip for easy access.

Mbali Mbali Mahale Lodge

Mbali Mbali Mahale Lodge

Musaddiq Gulamhussein

Musaddiq Gulamhussein

One of my all time favourites, Mbali Mbali Mahale Lodge sits on a stunning beach on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, on the edge of Mahale Mountains National Park. This place is a real hidden gem, far from the crowds and bustle of northern Tanzania’s honeypots.

The lodge comprises just ten thatched beach tents set on wooden platforms for incredible views over the lake. There's a real sense of wilderness here, but with all the comforts you need, including ensuite showers, and even Wi-Fi! The real highlight, though, is the wildlife. Mahale Mountains National Park is famous for its chimpanzees, but it's not just chimps! Keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, butterflies, and all sorts of birds as you hike through the forest. In the evenings, I like to unwind by the campfire with my fellow guests, listening to the sounds of the wilderness and gazing at the star-studded sky.

Manyara Best View Lodge

Manyara Best View Lodge

Robbin Meulemans

Robbin Meulemans

One of my favourite places to stay in all of Tanzania, Best View Lodge is situated at the top of the Rift Valley Escarpment with incredible views in all directions. I’ve sat on the veranda here, gin and tonic in hand, gazing at some life changing sunsets: the vast escarpment wall in one direction, farms below, and Lake Manyara ahead glistening in the evening light.

The lodge is perfectly situated for exploring Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater all from the same base, which is one of the reasons I recommend it to almost all our guests. And when you’re back from a day of walking safaris and game drives, the staff are wonderfully warm and helpful, the rooms are comfortable and the food is delicious. You can’t really go wrong here, it’s one of the best.

Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge

Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge

If there's one obvious drawback to Tanzania's most exclusive lodges, it’s that they tend to be priced out of the range of all but the deepest of pockets. So here’s a shout out to Serena, a long-serving East African hotel chain that runs a number of larger lodges which hit a popular sweet spot between comfort and affordability. Ngorongoro Serena ranks among the very best of these, with its centrally heated rooms and scenic location on the western crater rim. I often recommend this lodge to serious wildlife enthusiasts, because it is the closest option to the main descent road into the crater, making it particularly well suited to early morning game drives.

Ngorongoro Crater Camp

Ngorongoro Crater Camp

The relatively chilly highland climate that characterises Ngorongoro Crater’s scenic rim means that most lodges there have a very indoorsy feel. An exception is Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp, which comprises 10 stilted standing tents set in an atmospheric forest of lichen-draped flat-top acacias. To be honest, I was a bit worried about the cold when I arrived here, but I needn’t have been: the tents are all equipped with gas heaters and electric blankets, and very snug at night. The camp’s location is perfect for game drives in the early morning, which is the best time to explore the crater

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

The most sumptuous and exclusive lodge overlooking Ngorongoro Crater is also the oldest, having started life in the 1930s as a humble hunting lodge. Today the playful Maasai-meets-Versailles architecture and décor – a knowingly kitsch blend of classical, baroque, African and colonial influences – makes &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge stand out as one of the most original and popular safari lodges anywhere in East Africa. What the lodge’s earliest gun-toting colonial patrons would make of all this tomfoolery is anybody’s guess. But – highland mist permitting – they would doubtless approve of the view over the world’s largest volcanic caldera, which remains every bit as spectacular as it was 100 years ago.

Tarangire Safari Lodge

Tarangire Safari Lodge

This is my favourite place to stay in Tarangire National Park. Yes, there are smarter and more exclusive alternatives, but none that comes close to Tarangire Safari Lodge when it comes to location. This clifftop lodge offers a mesmerising view over long stretch of river where elephants maintain a near-permanent presence. And as if that were not enough, it also has an unbeatable location for early morning game drives on the park’s most rewarding wildlife viewing circuits. The first lodge to open in Tarangire, way back in 1985, it has been owned and managed by the hands-on Simonson family ever since, and it remains exceptional value by comparison to almost any other lodge in Tanzania.

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

I love the upmarket Tarzan experience offered by the 10 luxury treehouse suites that comprise &Beyond's Lake Manyara Tree Lodge. Set in a luxuriant mahogany forest, this exclusive lodge is also arguably the best base for Lake Manyara safaris, not least because it lies so deep in the park you can explore roads seldom visited by people staying elsewhere. The lodge’s guides know the park backwards, which greatly increases the odds of locating Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions.

Hatari Lodge

Hatari Lodge

The only lodge set within Arusha National Park, Hatari is the ideal place to spend a couple of relaxed nights at the start or end of a northern Tanzania safari. It stands in a picturesque forest, frequented by giraffe, waterbuck and monkeys, at the base of Mount Meru (Africa's fifth highest massif). The German owner-managers Jörg and Marlies Gabriel have invested considerable thought and passion in the characterful décor. They also actively promote a slow food policy based on using organic ingredients sourced from local home gardens. If you have the energy, I’d recommend organising a guided day walk into Mount Meru’s spectacular semi-collapsed caldera. More sedately, sundowner drinks at Hatari are often capped by views of snow-capped Kilimanjaro.

Namiri Plains

Namiri Plains

Over the course of numerous safaris to the Serengeti over the past 30-odd years, few lodges have blown me away quite as much as Namiri Plains did on my most recent visit. This ultra-exclusive new lodge forms part of the highly-regarded Asilia chain and offers accommodation in ten spacious stone-and-canvas cottages decorated with local basketwork. For me, what really makes Namiri Plains special is that it reliably offers high quality cheetah and lion sightings in an corner of the Serengeti that's pleasingly remote from other lodges.

Greystoke Mahale

Greystoke Mahale

Arriving at Greystoke, you could be forgiven for thinking you've washed up on a jungle-swathed Indian Ocean island. This idyllic beach camp stands on Lake Tanganyika, a beautiful inland sea that ranks as the world's longest freshwater body, and reportedly the least polluted. Greystoke is the perfect base for tracking chimpanzees in Mahale Mountains – on two previous visits, these hirsute apes have actually walked through camp – and it also offers dhow trips out onto the lake. In common with Chada and Sand River, Greystoke is owned by Nomad Tanzania, a locally-based company that operates several of the country’s most alluring and exclusive bush camps

Chada Katavi

Chada Katavi

When it comes to that classic bush feel, few safari camps can match Chada. Set in remote and little visited Katavi National Park, this low-footprint camp comprises just six standing tents scattered in a tall acacia glade overlooking a vast floodplain alive with buffalo, hippo and other wildlife. The tents are very spacious, but simply decorated, with old-school bucket showers and eco-toilets. Chada really comes alive at night: I’ve had elephants nibbling on fallen acacia pods all around my tent here, and almost invariably heard hyenas whooping and lions grunt-roaring across the floodplain.

Sand Rivers

Sand Rivers

Probably my favourite lodge in Nyerere National Park, Sand Rivers overlooks a wide, sandy bend in the Rufiji, Tanzania's largest river. The open-fronted stone-and-thatch suites here are simply stunning, and there's also a tempting freeform swimming pool set under a massive baobab tree. Whether you explore by boat, in a 4x4, or on foot, there's plenty of wildlife to be seen in the area, and the guides are exceptional. Aside from the exceptional river view, an appealing aspect of Sand River is that it stands some distance from any other camp and too deep into the park to be reached on day safaris from outside.

Roho ya Selous

Roho ya Selous

Nyerere is Tanzania's largest national park, extending across 30,000-plus square kilometres, and it offers a more exclusive safari experience than the better-known Serengeti. A great base for exploring it is Roho ya Selous, which means ‘Heart of Selous’ in reference the park’s former name Selous Game Reserve. Set on the shore of Lake Nzerakera, Roho ya Selous consists of eight luxury standing tents spaced along a tract of evergreen waterside forest. The lodge stands in the heart of a rewarding wildlife-viewing circuit where you are sure to see plenty of elephant, buffalo and giraffe, and might well get lucky with lion and African wild dog. A highlight is boat trips on the lake, which is home to large numbers of hippo and plentiful waterbirds.

Jabali Ridge

Jabali Ridge

The view from Jabali Ridge is unforgettable. Set on a rocky hill, this stylish boutique lodge offers sweeping vistas across the vast baobab-studded plains of Ruaha National Park and wide sandy arc of the seasonal Mwagusi River. The accommodation is every bit as memorable, comprising as it does eight luxurious cottages built into and around the large rounded granite boulders at the hill’s summit. Jabali Ridge is a superb base for game drives in Ruaha, a relatively off-the-beaten-track safari destination that ranks as Tanzania’s second-largest national park and one of the best for carnivores such as lion, leopard, cheetah and African wild dog. Night drives are often very rewarding and the cuisine is truly outstanding.

Lake Natron Camp

Lake Natron Camp

This extraordinary wilderness camp stands on the edge of the blinding white salt flats that enclose caustic Lake Natron. This starkly beautiful Rift Valley setting is dominated by the brooding presence of Ol Doinyo Lengai, one of the world's most active volcanoes. Tanzanian owner-managers Åke and Nangini Lindstrom have designed the camp to be low impact, and the spacious standing tents are shaded by camouflaged netting that helps keep the interior cool whilst reducing the visual impact. Lake Natron Camp stands on a Maasai concession, it only employs local Maasai people and it funds several community projects. Within the concession, you’ll find 120,000-year-old fossil human footprints and a spring-fed stream where you can swim while white-lipped tilapias nibble at your dead skin (a sensation I found oddly addictive once I got used to it).

Ndutu Safari Lodge

Ndutu Safari Lodge

Wildlife photographers, filmmakers and big cat enthusiasts talk in hushed tones about Ndutu Safari Lodge. Founded in 1968 close to the seasonal lake for which it is named, this down-to-earth lodge offers access to a part of the Serengeti-Ngorongoro ecosystem famed for its high densities of carnivores. Ndutu is an excellent base for catching the wildebeest calving season in February, but large herds of grazers are usually present from December through to April, and there's good cat viewing all year round. It also remains one of the best value lodges in this part of the world, offering accommodation in 34 simple stone-and-thatch cottages with private verandas, and meals in a convivial thatched restaurant where I’ve often seen genets creep around the rafters at night.

Discover Northern Tanzania

See the north's best parks in 6 days, tanzania safaris: need to know, everything you wish you'd known before you booked.

Tanzania has three main safari regions: the North, Southern Tanzania, and Western Tanzania.

By far the most popular safari region is the north of Tanzania, easily accessible from Kilimanjaro International Airport or the domestic Arusha Airport. This region is home to the famed Serengeti, along with Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara, which together constitute the popular "Northern Circuit," Tanzania's safari best-seller.

Far less visited than the north, the parks of southern Tanzania suit those who’ve already been to the Serengeti, or popular Big Five destinations elsewhere, and are seeking a wilder experience. There are two major destinations here: the Selous and Ruaha.

Western Tanzania is the least visited of the three main safari regions. Because it’s not easily accessible, it’s costly to travel here. It’s roughly a four-hour light aircraft flight from the main hubs of Arusha or Dar es Salaam. There are two scheduled flights a week, but these are also quite expensive; driving will take a couple of days. But if money isn’t an issue, you’ll be rewarded with a remote safari experience largely to yourself. Many travellers will come out west to track the chimps of Mahale.

Tanzania safari FAQs

Your questions, our expert answers, we can't travel during the migration river crossings, are there other impressive spectacles at other times of year.

Yes! I think calving season during the wildebeest migration is just as spectacular as the more famous river crossing period.

This period runs from December to March around the Ndutu Plains to the south of Serengeti. During this time the wildebeest and zebra stampede over the plains preparing to give birth to thousands of calves. At the same time the big cats are on the lookout for an easy snack. With vast numbers of animals, their sounds and smells, all of the little calves, and the big cats on the lookout... it's theatre on an epic scale and you cannot be disappointed. And the extra benefit is that it's a much shorter drive here than to see the river crossings.

What are your recommended alternatives to safari in the Serengeti?

In my opinion there's not much that tops Serengeti National Park. As far as the wildlife and scenery goes there's nowhere better for a safari in Tanzania.

The only downsides I can think of are that visiting the Serengeti can involve lots of driving (to see the migration river crossings takes two or three days driving), also it can be expensive and, at peak times, busy (although far quieter than neighbouring Masai Mara in Kenya !)

For those who prefer less driving, I'd recommend Ngorongoro Crater as a good runner up to the Serengeti. Ngorongoro's compact size (the crater is only 20 kilometres across) means you can see more with much less driving. All the big five can be seen here and as a bonus you have have a better chance of seeing rhinos here than in Serengeti.

If you want to escape all crowds and get off the beaten track, I highly recommend Ruaha National Park. Located in the midwest of the country, it surprises with outstretched savannahs and plenty of animals, together with some amazing lodges. The downside (or upside, depending on what you're looking for) is the distance – it’s pretty far from everywhere.

And finally if you're looking for a lower cost safari in Tanzania you could book flights to Dar Es Salaam, and from there do a safari in Mikumi National Park. Relatively small, it still offers open savannah with all your usual safari suspects except for rhinos, along with the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises.

Epic 5-Day Safari In Tanzania Guide

  • by Jonny Duncan
  • March 8, 2024 March 8, 2024

A 5-day safari in Tanzania is one of the best ways to see the best wildlife in the country and this is my guide on where to go and what to see. I have visited Tanzania 2 times and each time have spent several days on safari there.

This itinerary provides an epic overview of Tanzania’s wildlife and landscapes, showcasing some of the country’s most iconic safari destinations.

5-Day Safari In Tanzania

This is an extraordinary journey through the heart of Africa’s most iconic wilderness set against the backdrop of vast savannah plains, towering acacia trees, and dramatic sunsets, this adventure promises unparalleled encounters with the continent’s most majestic wildlife.

The 3 safari destinations mentioned here are Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater. 3 of the best places for a safari in Tanzania, if not most of Africa.

The word ‘safari’ is Swahili and means a ‘journey‘.

Note: All photos taken are my own.

tanzania animal safari

Top tip: get the  Bradt Zambia Safari Guide  to help plan your trip. It’s the best guide I have used for Zambia and Bradt Travel Guides in general are some of the best to use for Africa.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is a renowned wildlife sanctuary located in northern Tanzania. It is famous for its large concentration of elephants, which is one of the highest in Africa.

The park is named after the Tarangire River that crosses through it, providing a vital water source for the diverse array of wildlife that inhabits the region.

This makes for a great 1st-day safari on the way between Arusha and the Serengeti. If you decided to do a 4-day safari instead of a 5-day safari in Tanzania then I would suggest missing Tarangire, because as much as I love elephants, it’s better to spend more time in the Serengeti.

Having said that, Tangier National Park is less busy with tourists than the Serengeti s0 you can have a more quiet wildlife experience, although still expect other people on safari there.

tanzania animal safari

In addition to elephants, Tarangire National Park is home to a variety of other animals, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and numerous bird species.

The park’s landscape is characterized by vast grasslands, acacia woodlands, and seasonal swamps, offering a unique ecosystem for both predators and herbivores.

tanzania animal safari

Tarangire is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, the Serengeti, but it offers a quieter and more intimate safari experience. You can enjoy game drives, walking safaris, and birdwatching tours in the park, which is less crowded compared to other destinations in Tanzania.

Serengeti National Park

Here we go… this is the big one!

tanzania animal safari

The Serengeti National Park is one of the most iconic and celebrated wildlife reserves in Africa, located in northern Tanzania. It spans approximately 14,750 square kilometres (5,700 square miles) and is renowned for its vast plains, stunning landscapes, and incredible biodiversity.

Serengeti National Park is home to an impressive array of wildlife year-round. This includes the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros), as well as numerous other species such as giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, and various antelope species.

tanzania animal safari

I have to say that after doing around 30 safaris across East Africa and Southern Africa, I saw more leopards in the Serengeti in 2 days than I did in all other places combined.

But then with wildlife you just never know, sometimes you have to get lucky.

tanzania animal safari

The most impressive thing about the Serengeti is the vast savannah that allows for the great wildlife-watching opportunities that some other safari destinations don’t have, being more covered by bush.

tanzania animal safari

Serengeti National Park is a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts, offering unforgettable safari experiences and the opportunity to witness some of the most incredible natural phenomena in the world.

Camping in the Serengeti is an experience unto itself as, especially if you choose a more budget safari like I mostly do, you will end up camping in a simple tent with no fences. You will be open to any wildlife that may happen to wander through.

But don’t worry, there will always be a ranger(s) by the main campsite keeping an eye on things all night. Just don’t think of going for a piss in the bushes from your tent at night!

tanzania animal safari

Ngorongoro Crater

tanzania animal safari

The Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking natural wonder located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania.

It is often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” due to its stunning beauty and remarkable biodiversity and is one of my favourite safari destinations in Africa.

Formed by the collapse of a large volcano millions of years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact caldera, with a diameter of approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) and a depth of over 600 meters (1,970 feet).

The crater floor is a self-contained ecosystem, providing a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.

tanzania animal safari

The Ngorongoro Crater is home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife, including all of the “Big Five”. Other species found within the crater, much like the Serengeti, include wildebeests, zebras, hyenas, cheetahs, hippos, and bird species such as flamingoes.

The crater’s unique geography and abundant water sources make it an ideal habitat for such diverse wildlife.

tanzania animal safari

In addition to wildlife viewing, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area offers cultural experiences, including visits to Maasai villages where you can learn about traditional Maasai culture and customs.

tanzania animal safari

Camping at the Ngorongoro Crater is an experience in itself as, like in the Serengeti, you can camp out with nothing between you and the wildlife. But not just that, as you will camp on the top of the crater rim, you will get an incredible sunrise opportunity.

Safari Practicalities

If you have the time and are on a budget then you could just show up in Arusha, the main city in the north of the country that is the main jumping-off point into these main places for your 5-day safari in Tanzania.

In Arusha, you will be able to find a safari company to take you on your trip. There are numerous safari companies operating in Arusha. Research online reviews, ask for recommendations from fellow travellers, or consult with travel agents to find a reputable company that suits your budget and preferences.

Tanzania safari guide – where & when to go, and what to see.

Going on  safari in Tanzania  is relatively straightforward. The country has a well-developed tourist offering with easy and frequent access by plane, good internal flight options, a large variety of accommodation and English spoken as a second language by almost everyone. Bear in mind that if you’re planning to visit parks in the west of the country most roads are not tarmacked, making your safari weather dependent.

Tanzania’s geography is one of the most varied in Africa, and ranges from the Indian Ocean in the east to Africa’s highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro in the north, huge central plains and the great lakes to the east. All of this makes for multiple unique habitats, many of which are protected wildlife areas in the form of national parks and game reserves.

Tanzania is home to an estimated 4 million animals of over 430 species of classic African wildlife and over 1,000 species of birds.  Wildlife of note in Tanzania includes large elephant and lion populations, as well as huge herds of grazers in the northern plains.

The two most popular routes for overland safaris in Tanzania are the  “northern circuit” and the “southern circuit”, and both take in a selection of Tanzanian national parks. The northern circuit is the more popular of the two – with dense, accessible wildlife and more crowds and higher prices – and takes in Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Arusha and Kilimanjaro National Parks, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The southern circuit covers Ruaha, Mikumi,  Udzungwa Mountains National Parks and the Selous Game Reserve, with the same breadth of wildlife but spread over a larger, more wild landscape, and sees a smaller number of tourists.

Whilst self-drive safaris are an option in many national parks in Tanzania, this can be complicated by the need for an official guide. Given this fact, you’ll no doubt need to do a little research into the most suitable safari tour companies in Tanzania before arrival in the country.

Along with Kenya , Tanzania is home ot the classic African safari, with big five spotting near the top of every visitor’s wishlist. There are a number of world-class national parks in Tanzania to do just that, with both Lake Manyara and now the Serengeti hosting unique tree-climbing lions, for some extra wildlife wow-factor.

One of the beauties of taking a safari in Tanzania is easy access to the picture-postcard white sand beaches of Zanzibar. Many Tanzanian tour operators will help arrange your trip to work on your tan with a pre- or post-safari break on perfect Indian Ocean beach.

Best to safari in Tanzania

Tanzania has a year-round tropical climate, though there are some large regional variations. The coast is generally warmer and more humid than the interior, with the monsoon rains bringing two rain periods – the long rains from March to May and the short rains from November and December.

The best time to take a safari in Tanzania is from June to October when the rains have finished and the temperature is at its coolest. However, this is peak safari season with busy national parks and safari lodges in high demand. If you can put up with muddy – and occasionally impassable – roads, then the short rain season means decent discounts on safaris across Tanzania and usually decent wildlife viewing.

From desert-island national parks in Lake Victoria in the north, to mountainous chimp-filled forests around Lake Tanganika in the west, to the world-reknown Serengeti and Ngorogoro parks, are plenty of places to get your safari fix And if it’s the big 5 you’re after, they’re on offer in most national parks in Tanzania.

At 50,000 km sq Selous is the second largest conservation area in Africa , yet also one of the more remote safari options. The density and diversity of the wildlife here earned the park UNESCO world heritage status, and it’s famed for its huge concentration of elephants, estimated at up to 40,000. The best time to visit Selous is June to October, which is the high season, but still far less crowded that most other East African national parks.

Tanzania is world-famous for its jaw-dropping scenery, density of wildlife and fascinating tribal peoples. The country’s northern safari areas are the most visited, with sweeping, game-covered plains set against soaring escarpments and towering volcanic mountains. Here the Great Rift Valley forms a magnificent backdrop to wildlife reserves like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area . Snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro , Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895m, is a mecca for avid trekkers and mountaineers.

Tanzania ’s national parks are a haven for huge concentrations of animals and birdlife. The Serengeti National Park alone has nearly 2 million wildebeest and zebra which migrate along age-old pathways, followed by opportunistic lion , cheetah , leopard , hyena and jackal. The famous Ngorongoro Crater is a massive volcanic caldera where 25,000 animals live in a setting of unparalleled grandeur. Maasai tribal people have inhabited this region for hundreds of years, and to this day still herd their cattle amongst the native wildlife. A visit to a local village to learn about their culture and way of life is an eye-opening experience.

Other major wildlife areas include beautiful Lake Manyara and Tarangire national parks – both very different environments. Lake Manyara is surrounded by grassy floodplains and groundwater forest; it is home to many hippo, tree-climbing lions and is a haven for birdlife. Tarangire National Park is renowned for its large elephant herds, strange baobab trees and bright red soils. On the western border, between the Mahale Mountains and Lake Tanganyika, lives one of Africa’s largest populations of wild chimpanzees. A safari here is a remarkable experience.

Just off Tanzania’s east coast on the Indian Ocean lies the ‘spice island’ of Zanzibar . The old Stone Town is a UNESCO Heritage listed site and a tour of the town reveals its complex history. The island also boasts white sand beaches, clear, turquoise water, and beach hotels offering barefoot luxury; a relaxing conclusion to any East African safari.

When is the best time to visit tanzania.

Tanzania is a true year-round safari destination. Choosing where to go will depend on the season and what sort of wildlife you wish to see – whether it’s the wildebeest migration, chimpanzees or just good all-round game viewing.

The annual wildebeest migration in the Serengeti ecosystem is always a big attraction and usually means more safari visitors. The herds of wildebeest and zebra move with the rains in search of fresh green grass so the time of year dictates which lodges and camps to visit.

The dry season (June to October) is the best time to visit Tarangire National Park, as many grazing animals are attracted to the permanent waters of the Tarangire River. This is also the best time to visit the chimpanzees in the Mahale Mountain National Park.

June - October

December - may.

Considered by many as the peak time to travel. The Great Migration is heading north through the Western Corridor towards Kenya’s Masai Mara and there are plenty of chances to see river crossings. Due to the lower rainfall, animals are also congregating around the remaining water sources making game-viewing excellent. This is also the best time to see the chimpanzees in the Mahale Mountains National Park, in the country’s west, when conditions are at their driest.

River crossings can be seen in Northern Tanzania as the wildebeest begin to travel down from Kenya towards the southern and eastern Serengeti. The rains start to pick up at this time of year.

An excellent time to visit Tanzania when the migration is in the south-eastern Serengeti. Though it is the Green Season, many travellers take advantage of the lower prices and the fact that there are fewer travellers. These are the months when the wildebeest, zebra and gazelles mass on the rich volcanic plains and can be seen in huge numbers. This is also the time to see predators like lions, cheetah and hyena which follow the herds. February is when the herds are calving, and visitors may get to see some animals taking their very first steps.

Tanzania FAQ

Can i see the big 5 in tanzania.

Tanzania is home to all members of the legendary ‘Big 5’: lion , leopard , elephant , rhino and buffalo .  All apart from rhino , plus many other species, can be seen in Tanzania’s best game areas. The Ngorongoro Crater is the best place for seeing endangered black rhino, as they can’t move from the crater floor. Please note that the seasons, rainfall and drought can affect game movements. Our knowledgeable Destination Specialists know the best time of year to visit and where to see particular game species.

When is the best time to see the Great Migration?

The great wildebeest and zebra migration is a natural event and therefore their exact location can never be 100% predicted. The wildebeest mass in certain areas of the Serengeti Ecosystem (made up of the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation area and Kenya’s Masai Mara ) at different times of the year. The below map shows historically, where the wildebeest and zebra will be, based on the time of year. If you are interested in learning more, or in seeing the Great Migration please contact one of our staff who are always happy to chat.

Map of the the Wildebeest and Zebra migration in Tanzania and Kenya

Where can I see chimpanzees in Africa?

Chimpanzees can be seen in several countries within Africa, including Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania. There are a number of groups that have become habituated to humans, and one of the best places to see chimpanzees is at the unique  Greystoke Mahale  lodge, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania’s Mahale Mountain National Park.

What can I combine Tanzania with?

Tanzania is often combined with other countries including neighbouring Kenya or either Uganda or Rwanda for a trek to see the gorillas. A few days on the beautiful beaches of Zanzibar is a very popular way to end a Tanzanian safari.

What is the best thing to do in Tanzania?

A wildlife safaris is an absolute must as Tanzania is one of Africa’s great wildlife destinations. Witnessing tens of thousands of wildebeest and zebra in the Serengeti is an unquestionable highlight, whilst the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the natural wonders of the world. A trek to the top of Africa’s highest peak – Mount Kilimanjaro – is a bucket-list experience for any adventure enthusiast.

How do I get to Tanzania?

There are only two European airlines – KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Turkish Airlines – that fly directly into the country. Otherwise, flying via the Kenyan capital of Nairobi (where far more major airlines fly to including British Airways and Air France) is another option. From here travellers can then fly to numerous airports in Tanzania.

For travellers coming from the United States at least one stop is required. The easiest airlines for connections are either with KLM or Qatar Airways via Doha. From Doha there are also direct flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Five of the Best Safari Itineraries in Tanzania

tanzania animal safari

 Michal Venera/ Getty Images

One of the  best safari destinations  on the African continent, Tanzania is home to a slew of world-famous game reserves — including the iconic Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area . In particular, it is known for the Great Migration, an annual event that sees vast herds of wildebeest and zebra travel between their ancestral grazing and mating grounds in Tanzania and Kenya.

A Tanzanian safari ranks highly on many people's bucket list. However, there are countless different operators to choose from and itineraries are notoriously pricey. Before forking out thousands of dollars for your trip of a lifetime, it’s essential to make sure that you’ve chosen the best possible trip for you. We've rounded up our pick of the most rewarding itineraries for five different types of traveler.

For Luxury Travelers: Deluxe Safari and Beach, Imagine Travel

This 11-night itinerary from luxury travel company Imagine Travel is the ideal option for those with unlimited cash to spend. It offers the best of both worlds — the rugged beauty of Tanzania’s most famous safari destinations and the tropical luxury of the beach. Accommodation is provided by a series of exclusive camps and lodges, all owned by socially and environmentally-conscious brand Asilia Africa .

After flying into Kilimanjaro , you’ll be greeted by your private guide and taken directly to Tarangire National Park . Part of the country’s famed Northern Circuit, Tarangire is less crowded than its better-known neighbors, offering excellent game-viewing and a fabulous sense of exclusivity. You’ll spend your time here at Oliver’s Camp , where 10 luxury safari tents offer every conceivable modern comfort, from antique decor to en-suite bathrooms with hot water and flushing toilets.

The itinerary also takes you to Lake Manyara National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park. At Ngorongoro you will stay in the contemporary glass-and-canvas domes of The Highlands . This intimate camp is set on the slopes of the Olmoti volcano and combines breathtaking views of the Ngorongoro Crater with sublime in-house dining. In the Serengeti, you can add to the luxury experience with an optional hot-air balloon safari.

The second half of the trip is spent in the Zanzibar Archipelago , at 5-star Matemwe Lodge. Expect laid-back indulgence in one of 12 beach chalets, each of which overlook a coral-filled lagoon. All chalets include a deep-soaking tub and a private verandah with soothing sea views. Spend your days in the spa, cruising on a traditional dhow or scuba diving off nearby Mnemba Atoll.

For Families: Family Wildlife and Wilderness Safari, Africa Adventure Company

Family safaris offer a unique opportunity to introduce your children to the wonders of the African bush — but they do require special planning. Many lodges have age restrictions, and some ban children from game drives altogether. This itinerary by The Africa Adventure Company , however, is especially geared towards parents traveling with teenagers and young children. The tour is private, allowing you to customize your itinerary according to special requirements and individual interests, while the included activities are designed to delight younger travelers.

The trip lasts for 14 days, and focuses on the parks of the Northern Circuit. In Tarangire National Park, scenic game drives can be enjoyed alongside nature walks with local Maasai guides or trips to rural schools. Experiences like these offer your children an invaluable insight into other cultures as well as the chance to interact with Tanzanians of their own age, perhaps by joining in a lesson or by playing a game of soccer. At Lake Eyasi, spend time with indigenous bushmen, learning how to gather plants and craft traditional weapons and jewelry.

Other highlights include the unparalleled game viewing of Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti; and Olduvai Gorge , an anthropological site famous for the discovery of early humanoid fossils. In each location, lodges and camps are selected especially for their family-friendly outlook. Value and Classic accommodation options allow you to tailor your trip to suit your budget. Regardless of which price bracket you choose, there are significant discounts for children — making the thought of budgeting for a family vacation to Tanzania slightly less intimidating.

For Couples: Romantic East Africa Safari, &Beyond

This romance-filled itinerary by luxury travel company &Beyond is tailor-made for honeymooning couples. It could also set the scene for your dream proposal , or make a special anniversary unforgettable. The private tour, which lasts 11 days, starts with a scheduled flight from Kilimanjaro to remote Manyara Airstrip. From there, an open 4x4 safari vehicle takes you to Lake Manyara National Park, where awe-inspiring habitats range from secret woodlands to soda lakes dotted with flamingoes.

Spend your time at the park looking for its famous tree-climbing lions. Later, fall asleep amidst the mahogany trees in an atmospheric stilted treehouse at &Beyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge . Unique experiences are the trademark of this itinerary. In the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, share a gourmet picnic with your loved one on the crater floor, surrounded by wildlife and waited upon by immaculate butlers. In the Serengeti, stay under canvas and experience the incredible romance of a dawn hot-air balloon safari.

Of course, nothing says "I love you" like a few days of decadence on an idyllic shore — which is where &Beyond Mnemba Island lodge comes in. Transfer via plane and boat to this picture-perfect spot in the Zanzibar Archipelago to try your hand at scuba diving, snorkeling or fly-fishing. Alternatively, you can relax in your beachfront banda or sign-up for a massage overlooking the ocean. Many of your meals are served al fresco, in the form of beach picnics or candlelit dinners at the water’s edge.

For Explorers: Get Out of Town, Nomad Tanzania

Feeling the need to sign out of real life for a week?  This itinerary from veteran travel company Nomad Tanzania is your key to escaping the rat race. Designed as an antidote to the pressures of modern life, it focuses on two remote areas in southern Tanzania, both of them far removed from WiFi and cell phone reception. Say goodbye to your work colleagues, abandon your social media accounts and rediscover your inner peace with a visit to the country’s least-visited wildernesses.

Your seven-night trip begins at Ruaha National Park. It is the largest national park in Tanzania, and also one of the least accessible. Its remoteness means that it is less crowded than the more famous parks of the north; but the wildlife sightings are just as rewarding. In particular, the park is known for its big cats, boasting the second-largest lion population in Africa . You’ll stay at Nomad Tanzania’s Kigelia Ruaha Camp , which comprises just six luxury tents nestled amidst a grove of sausage trees.

The second half of the itinerary takes you to the world-renowned Selous Game Reserve. The rustic cottages of Sand Rivers Selous camp provide inspiring views of the Rufiji River, which is the ideal location for relaxing river safaris. The best way to explore this largely untouched area, however, is on foot. Walking safaris are a key attraction at Sand Rivers Selous, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in nature's splendor.

For a true taste of life in the wilderness, spend a night fly-camping in a temporary camp. Surrounded by virgin bush and lit by the flicker of the nearby campfire, these netted tents afford bedtime views of the stars, spangled in vivid constellations across the African sky. This itinerary is offered from June to mid-March.

For Photographers: Tanzania Migration Photo Safari, Natural Habitat Adventures

Whether you’re an amateur or a professional behind the lens, this itinerary is a must for keen wildlife photographers. It centers around the Great Migration , a magnificent spectacle of life and death involving hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra (and the predators that follow in their wake). The time and location of the migration changes every year, and is therefore hard to predict. For this reason, the tour focuses on two different areas of the Serengeti to maximize your chance of being in the right place at the right time.

You’ll be based first in the Namiri Plains, a remote private concession in the east-central Serengeti that has only recently become accessible to visitors. Very few tourists travel to the Plains - which means that you won’t have to worry about hordes of safari vehicles ruining the authenticity of your photographs. The area is also known for its high predator density, giving you the best possible chance of capturing the drama of a kill on camera. You can explore on foot, or in a traditional safari vehicle. The second half of the trip takes you to the company's Migration Base Camp in the southern Serengeti.

Natural Habitat Adventures limits group sizes for this itinerary to just nine people, with a maximum of four guests per vehicle. This means that there’s plenty of space in the jeep for your camera equipment, while a window seat with an unimpeded view is guaranteed. Best of all, the nine-day trip is guided by a professional naturalist and accomplished photographer, with the knowledge needed to advise you on how to get the best shots .

10 Most Seen Animals And Where To Spot Them On Your Tanzania Safari!

28 December 2023

Tanzania is a beautiful place that is home to stunning beaches, fascinating archaeological sites, ancient monuments of cultural significance, incredible landscapes, and, of course, amazing safari experiences and beautiful wildlife.

In fact, Tanzania is one of the most renowned destinations for safaris in the world thanks to its sheer number of wildlife spectacles, such as elephant herds, annual wildebeest migrations, wildlife reserves, and more.

10 Most Seen Animals And Where To Spot Them On Your Tanzania Safari!

It is truly an incredible destination, particularly for those looking to see as much of its wildlife as possible.

Some of the most well-known wildlife in Tanzania is comprised of five animals, known. as “The Big Five.”

This group is considered to be at the very top of the natural order of things in the animal kingdom within Tanzania, ruling the hierarchy of the food chain.

They are dangerous, deadly, and difficult to hunt.

The Big Five are as follows:

  • Cape Buffalos

Keep in mind that while these species are considered the apex animals within the Tanzanian wildlife, some are easier to spot than others. As such, some will be making this list, while others will not.

With this in mind, we are going to be looking at ten of the most common Tanzania animals that you are sure to spot during your safari adventure, as well as where you are most likely to see them!

Lions

There is no way that you can experience a safari tour in Tanzania without running into a lion or two (or twelve!).

In Tanzania, there are around 16,000 lions. They are social animals that live together in a group known as a pride, which usually has between six and twelve lionesses and three male lions, as well as various cubs.

The lionesses take care of the hunting in order to feed the lion cubs. The males occupy their territory by marking it as their own and conquering any other apex alpha male lions in the general area.

Best Places To See Lions In Tanzania

  • Serengeti National Park
  • Ngorongoro Crater
  • Lake Manyara
  • Mikumi National Park
  • Ruaha National Park

2. Elephants

Elephants

African elephants are one of the famous members of the big five in Tanzania, and they are pretty easy to spot due to being the largest land animal on the entire planet!

These elephants are much larger than Asian elephants, with their ears being a distinctive part of their body that sets them apart due to just how big they are.

These elephants are also the heaviest land mammals as well, with fully mature African elephants weighing up to six and a half tons (or 15,000 pounds).

Much like lions, elephants are also incredibly social and live together in groups.

Herds of elephants can be incredibly large – it’s possible to observe more than a hundred elephants living in one herd.

These herds are led by female elephants, and they use low-frequency sounds in order to communicate with one another even when they are miles apart!

The females within the group tend to stay in their specific herds for the entirety of their lives. Younger males, though, will often veer away from their herd in order to create bachelor groups.

They will remain in these groups until they are old enough to start their own herds.

  • Nyerere National Park

3. Cape Buffalo

Cape Buffalo

Next up in Tanzania’s Big Five is the somewhat unexpected Cape Buffalo.

The Cape Buffalo, often referred to as the African Buffalo, stands out as a unique apex animal, given its bovine nature that defies conventional expectations.

Cape Buffaloes are animals that truly defy judgment based on their appearance. They are ferocious, dangerous, and very strong when provoked.

To emphasize this point, these Tanzania animals are considered to be the most dangerous species when it comes to hunting in Africa!

The lion, another member of the Big Five, serves as the primary predator of the Cape Buffalo. To hunt these formidable prey, lions employ tactical strategies due to the inherent danger they pose.

The most significant threat these buffalo pose to lions lies in their thick, curved, and pointed horns on their heads. These horns are so strong that they are effectively bulletproof!

No matter how docile they may seem, you certainly don’t want to underestimate the Cape Buffalo.

  • Katavi National Park

Hippos

Hippos are magnificent, sizable creatures with a distinct rotund appearance, and they have a deep affinity for the water. To have the best opportunity to observe them in Tanzania, head to areas near wetlands and rivers, such as the swamps within Tarangire National Park or the crater lake nestled in Ngorongoro.

These remarkable animals of Tanzania must spend a significant portion of their time submerged in water to maintain their skin’s moisture and coolness. In fact, they are often considered amphibious, as they can spend up to an astonishing sixteen hours a day in the water.

Hippos, being highly social creatures, have several collective nouns to describe their groups. You can refer to a gathering of hippos as a “pod,” a “school,” a “siege,” or even a “bloat.”

These groups typically consist of both male and female hippos, and the size can vary, with each group comprising anywhere from ten to thirty members.

That being said, some groups of hippos can have as many as 200 members!

In addition to their considerable size, hippos are known for their impressive vocal prowess.

Some of their vocalizations have been recorded at astonishing levels of 115 decibels, making them quite the loud animals. Their signature sound, often referred to as the “wheeze honk,” can carry over half a mile away, adding to their reputation as one of the noisiest creatures in the animal kingdom.

They use these vocalizations to communicate with fellow hippos.

Never forget to keep your distance from hippos! Even though they are beautiful, they are also aggressive and are considered dangerous.

They will use their sharp tusks and large teeth on all manner of threats, including humans.

5. Gazelles

Gazelles

The Gazelle is the animal that you are most likely to see during your Tanzania safari due to how common they are, despite their quickness.

The speed of the gazelle is one of their most noteworthy features, with the animal often known as the “swift deer” of the grasslands.

Their speed is so great that they are easily able to change their direction while running without losing any of their momentum!

Some of the highest speeds that gazelles have been known to run at are around 97 kilometers per hour. In general, a sustained speed of 50 kilometers per hour is the norm for the average gazelle.

Gazelles fall under the antelope category, but they are smaller than others in this category, with a height that ranges from around 60cm to 110cm.

There is a wide range of different gazelle species, including the following:

  • Thomson’s gazelle: The most well-known gazelle species, also known as the tommie.
  • Dama gazelle: Native to Africa. It resides in the Sahel region and the Saharan desert. This is one of the most endangered species of gazelle.
  • Rhim gazelle: Often found in desert areas (such as in Egypt, Suda, and Algeria). These gazelles are also known as African sand gazelles.
  • Dorcas gazelle: Common to Saharan and Northern Africa. They live in grassland habitats.
  • Red-fronted gazelle: With a habitat that ranges from northeastern Ethiopia to the middle of Africa, the red-fronted gazelles live in wooded savannas and arid grasslands.
  • Chinkara gazelle: Residing in India, Pakistan, or Iran, these gazelles live in light forests, deserts and hills, as well as arid plains.
  • Speke’s gazelle: Another African gazelle, found in the Horn of Africa peninsula. This species of gazelle is the smallest and is known to live in stony brush areas as well as semi-deserts.

Best Places To See Gazelles In Tanzania

Cheetah

Cheetahs are well known for being the fastest animals on Earth. They’re one of the most exciting species that you might be able to spot while on safari in Tanzania.

The cheetahs to be found in Tanzania are the East African cheetahs, an endemic species that are commonly seen across the Serengeti.

These Tanzania animals have a coat that can range from a whitish-yellow to tan, having the palest coat color of the cheetah species. They also have dark spots all over, apart from on their bellies, which are plain white.

Cheetahs are well known for their distinctive eye markings, with dark marks that begin at the corner of their eyes and progress downward to the edge of their mouth, looking like teardrops.

The Tanzanian cheetahs can be found in scrub forests, savannas, and grasslands, but they are currently considered vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to habitat loss, hunting threats, and high cub mortality rates.

Best Places To See Cheetahs In Tanzania

7. giraffes.

Giraffes

In Tanzania, there is only one species of giraffe to be found – the Masai Giraffe. You are sure to find them, though, as they are the national animal of Tanzania!

Giraffes are easily the tallest animals to be found on land, with mature giraffes able to reach an incredible 20 feet in length.

When it comes to the habitat of the giraffe, they are commonly found in woodlands, open grasslands, and scrublands thanks to these kinds of areas having tall trees that giraffes feed from.

In terms of their diets, they will eat the fruits, flowers, stems, and leaves from the trees thanks to that iconic long neck!

As well as their tall nature and that neck, there are a few other distinguishing features that they have, such as their jagged brown spots.

These spots are found across their body and will extend from the top of their legs down to their hooves.

Unfortunately, giraffes are another species that has declined in population, mainly due to issues such as disease, illegal poaching and hunting, and loss of their habitat.

Much like the rhino and the cheetah, they are also one of the most endangered animals in Tanzania.

Best Places To See Giraffes In Tanzania

8. nile crocodile.

Nile Crocodile

The Nile Crocodile is a part of the wildlife in Tanzania that you are likely to see due to the increase in their population.

That being said, you don’t want to get up close and personal with these crocs.

These crocodiles are considered to be one of the more fearsome predators across the animal kingdom in Africa, reaching up to four meters in length and weighing upwards of 450 kilograms.

They are also known for their rather hefty appetite, which is another reason to avoid any close contact with these deadly reptiles!

The habitat of the Nile Crocodile is made up of rivers, freshwater swamps, large freshwater lakes, mangrove swamps, dams (usually the ones that are close to rivers), and coastal estuaries.

These crocodiles are incredibly aggressive and are known for attacking and feasting on anything that gets too close to them.

This can range from small creatures to large ones, as they can eat up to half of their body weight in just one feeding session.

The power of their bite also helps them to take down any animals that are bigger than they are, as it is eight times more powerful than the bite of a great white shark.

You’ll also want to keep a wide berth from the offspring of the Nile Crocodile, as they are fiercely protective of their offspring and will guard them viciously until they hatch.

As mentioned, the population of the Nile Crocodile has increased, but this wasn’t always the case. In the 1950s and 1960s, their numbers dwindled significantly due to commonly being hunted for their skin.

9. burchell’s zebra.

Burchell’s Zebra

Named for the British naturalist and explorer William John Burchell, the Burchell’s zebra is a southern subspecies of the classical plains zebra.

These zebras are seen commonly across the various reserves and national parks within Tanzania, so you are likely to spot a few on your safari.

We all know the black-and-white striped nature of the zebra, but did you know that there is more to these stripes than meets the eye?

Much like fingerprints with humans, the black or dark brown stripes that are iconically seen on this animal are unique to each zebra individually.

The stripes themselves are supposed to help them camouflage themselves when in herds, and some scientists believe that their stripes can also help them ward off any flies that want to bite them.

Zebras are known as social animals, living in herds. Female zebras will even form a small harem of sorts within a larger herd!

They are also native to Africa and are a part of the wildlife spectacle that is the Masai Mara and Serengeti Migration. This event happens between June and September every year. During the migration, over one and a half million zebra and wildebeest cross from the northern Serengeti area into the Masai Mara in order to find green pastures, such as red oat grass.

Although the Burchell’s zebra is the one you will see during a safari in Tanzania, there are two other species of zebra that are common in Africa: the Grevy’s zebra and the mountain zebra.

Unfortunately, both of these species of zebra are considered to be endangered.

Best Places To See Burchell’s Zebra In Tanzania

10. blue wildebeest.

Blue Wildebeest

It might surprise you to know that the blue wildebeest, also known as the brindled gnu, is actually a species of antelope!

Much like the other antelope species to be found in Tanzania, blue wildebeests are also a common creature to be spotted while on safari.

It can be easy to confuse them with buffalo, though, as from a distance the likeness is very strong due to the flattened horns and the off-black coat that both animals possess.

However, if you look more closely, you will notice that the wildebeest is smaller than the buffalo, and also has a longer face more akin to the other antelope species.

The wildebeest is a key part of one of the largest mammal migrations in the world, which takes place within the ecosystem of the Serengeti and is made up of two million wildebeest.

During this migration, they are joined by other Tanzania animals, such as elands, gazelles, and zebras.

When it comes to seeing this migration, the wildebeest tend to start dispersing into the southeastern territory of the Serengeti from December all the way through to May.

They will then form a column that can reach up to 40km in length, wherein they cross the Grumeti River, which usually happens around June and into July.

Once they have crossed this river, the animals will venture into the northern Serengeti as well as into Kenya.

This lasts until October, when they will then go back to the southern part of the Serengeti.

Arriving around November, they then begin the process all over again in December!

Tanzania Wildlife

Tanzania offers great opportunities to view the Big Five roaming the savannah plains, it is not uncommon to see cheetah prowling, gazelle grazing, herds of elephant wandering, lions resting atop kopjes and leopard lazing or climbing trees.

Wildlife in the North vs the South

The principal northern and southern wildlife regions cover a vast range of destinations, each of which has its own unique wildlife and ecosystems.

The southern region offers more remote and unspoiled safari terrain and is much less frequented, whilst the northern circuit is busier but still has some great wildlife. The Southern Circuit includes the Selous Game Reserve and is one of the few areas you can explore on foot, offering the chance to view wild dogs, wildebeest, hippos, over 70,000 elephants, zebra and predators in their natural habitat. In the wilds of the west, Katavi is one of the least visited parks yet boasts some of the largest populations of crocodiles and hippos, while lion and leopard feed from the huge herds of herbivores.

In the north, the likelihood of spotting Big Five game, crocodiles, hippo, zebra and giraffe is strong in the renowned National Parks of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire.

The Serengeti is perfect for the quintessential landscapes of Africa; golden plains that teem with life of the numerous resident animals that one associates with Africa. Here you can also find the Great Migration for a majority of the year, where millions of wildebeest traverse the plains with predators such as lions, leopards, hyenas and crocodiles in hot pursuit.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking volcanic caldera that contains its own unique ecosystem and this animal sanctuary literally throngs with a staggering variety of wildlife, including buffalo, wildebeest, endangered black rhino, Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, elephant and lions.

Tanzania is famous for the annual wildebeest migration, where over a million wildebeests, along with thousands of zebras and gazelles, migrate from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara in Kenya. Visitors to Tanzania can witness this incredible spectacle in several national parks, including Serengeti National Park.

The Serengeti is home to the largest population of cheetahs in the world, an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 live there. They have adapted to the open plains and grasslands where they use incredible speed to chase their prey and their distinctive spotted coats help them blend in with the savannah. They face competition from predators such as lions and hyenas. The Serengeti Cheetah Project (SCP) tracks the population and has a database of all cheetah encounters in the Serengeti plains since 1975 and this information is vital to what we know about wild cheetahs.

Chimpanzees

In the stunningly beautiful areas of Mahale and Gombe, the rainforest-clad slopes are home to some of the oldest habituated chimpanzee troops in Africa. Trekking through the forests to track these familiar-looking distant relatives is one of the highlights of a wildlife holiday in Tanzania and can range between 1 to 4 hours, awaiting the upshot of a monkey hunt or the pant hoots of their frenetic communication is worth the tiring trek.

The Masai Giraffe

The national animal of Tanzania, also known as the Kilimanjaro Giraffe, is the largest subspecies of giraffe and one of the most easily recognisable animals. Using their long tongues to reach between thorns, they will find and eat large amounts of leaves, flowers, fruits and twigs, feeding for 16-20 hours each day. They can be found in several national parks such as Serengeti National Park, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara National Park.

Tanzania safaris – What you need to know for your first time

tanzania animal safari

Lions prowl across dusty savannah. Elephants gather at raucous waterholes. Wildebeest hoofs create a drum roll as herds cross the Serengeti. This is a Tanzania safari , a true immersion in wildlife and wilderness.

There are more wild land mammals in this country than anywhere else on the planet. There are almost a dozen different safari destinations and the complete suite of wildlife, with so much more than the big five.

Most preconceptions about an African safari can be realised in Tanzania. This is the country where you get closer, see more, and experience the wild at its untamed best .

But Tanzania is an enormous country and wild animals don’t live everywhere. In this detailed guide we’ll show you the places to go , things to see , experiences to try , places to stay and when to go ; along with tips for planning your first time in the country.

Tanzania Safaris – Essential Information

tanzania animal safari

Where is Tanzania and how do I get there?

Tanzania is a large country in East Africa, immediately south of Kenya . Dar es Salaam is the largest international airport but for most safaris it’s more convenient to use Kilimanjaro International Airport to the north.

Why are Tanzania safaris so famous?

The great wildebeest migration is in Tanzania for nine months of the year, in the most famous African destination of all – the Serengeti .

One glance at the Serengeti and you’ll immediately see this was the landscape that inspired Disney’s Lion King .

Tanzania is also home to Ngorongoro Crater and almost a dozen other national parks, all with their own wildlife specialisms.

What animals will I see on a Tanzanian safari?

tanzania animal safari

Lions , leopards , rhinos , elephants , giraffe , buffalo , wildebeest , zebra , Thomson’s gazelle …the list goes on and on, with Tanzania home to a stunning diversity of life.

Most impressive is the abundance . On a multi-day safari you don’t encounter a single lion but many different prides. Sometimes you’re confronted by herds of zebra numbering over 5000 individuals.

And none of the animals are seen in isolation. The beauty of an African safari is watching how everything interacts , especially at a waterhole or the battle between predator and prey.

How long do I need for a Tanzania safari?

This is not a one-day experience. Realistically you need at least four days . A week on safari is recommended as it allows you to visit different parks and really explore the wilderness.

What does a Tanzania safari cost?

A safari here is a once in a lifetime experience and it doesn’t come cheap . But can you put a price on watching lions prowl around tens of thousands of wildebeest?

You’ll need a permit for each park that’s visited , which ranges from USD 30 – 100 per day . Accommodation in basic camps starts at USD 50 per night per person, going upwards of USD 1000 per night.

While it is possible to rent a car and do your own safari, this really isn’t recommended and also attracts substantial fees. Almost everyone books a tour , so you must calculate the price of a sturdy four-wheel drive Toyota Landcruiser, a driver-guide or driver plus guide, then your meals and drinks.

The most basic multi-day safaris start at USD 180 per day per person. USD 300 – 400 per day is more realistic for using an experienced tour operator and clean, comfortable camps. At the top end a safari could cost you more than USD 2000 per day.

Why Tanzania and not Kenya or South Africa?

tanzania animal safari

In Tanzania you explore with all the senses . Hippos grunting as they emerge from a lake. The smell of fear as you watch a leopard stalk a gazelle herd. Lions roaring, elephants hooting, buffalo charging and zebra grazing besides your tent.

Tanzania isn’t the only country in Africa where you can go on safari. However, it is the one that most reflects preconceptions about an authentic safari .

The scale – Tanzania’s parks are huge; as an example, the Serengeti ecosystem is roughly the size of Belgium and one of the country’s largest reserves. Such a scale stops anywhere from feeling too crowded.

The animal abundance – no other African country has as many wild animals.

Getting closer – with so many animals it’s very easy to get close; it’s common for lions to rest in the shade created by your safari vehicle.

Pure wildlife theatre – nothing is seen in isolation and on a multi-day safari you become centre stage in it all.

Diversity – on a multi-day safari you’ll explore a myriad of habitats and ecosystems, each with its own atmosphere and wildlife cast.

Unique safari experiences only found in Tanzania

  • Follow the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti plains; or witness the calving season from January to March.
  • Find Africa’s ultimate Eden with a morning game drive in Ngorongoro Crater , where all the big five can be spotted at once.
  • Spot hundreds of elephants and baobab trees in Tarangire .
  • Search for rare tree-climbing lions in Lake Manyara National Park .
  • Go on thrilling walking safaris in Selous Game Reserve .

Safari experiences that are commonplace in Tanzania

  • Utilise light aircraft to land on dusty wilderness airstrips, deep within national parks .
  • Camp in the wild and wake up to zebra and buffalo grazing around your tent.
  • Track large lion prides on a hunt , or even a leopard or cheetah stalking its prey.
  • Be surrounded by elephants or giraffe.
  • Cross vast open landscapes that seem to have no end.
  • Watch hyenas and African vultures fighting over a fresh kill , or hear the crack of carnivorous teeth ripping through bone.
  • The safari never stops – you don’t just do a game drive or walk, you live the wildlife experience for 24 hours a day.

When to Visit Tanzania for Safari

tanzania animal safari

Tanzania is marked by wet and dry seasons and there is no best time to go on safari . Different times of year are better for different destinations, while the spread of tourism numbers across the year means that nowhere gets uncomfortably crowded.

January to February – Wildebeest calving

  • This is the hottest and driest time of the year in Tanzania.
  • The Great Migration is at the most accessible south-eastern part of the Serengeti, and the wildebeest are calving on the plains. This is a great time to visit the Serengeti and see predators on a hunt.
  • The warm dry weather makes wildlife spotting easy in all of Tanzania’s parks.

March to May – The long rains

  • The main rainy season lasts for three months and tropical downpours occur on most days.
  • Many safari lodges close and these months are low season in Tanzania.

June – August – Cool, dry, popular, and great for wildlife viewing

  • The long dry season is the most popular time to visit Tanzania . That’s partly because it has the most agreeable weather.
  • Wildlife viewing is good although the Great Migration will probably be in Kenya at this time of year.
  • The popularity of these months mean that Northern Tanzania’s destination can get crowded . However, the southern parks are never crowded , whatever month of the year.

September – late October – End of the dry season

  • As the dry season continues wildlife must come to the waterholes to drink , making animal spotting very easy.
  • Even though wildlife viewing is superb this is an unpopular time, so lodges and safaris are cheaper .

Late October – December – The short rains

  • Short afternoon showers are common at this time of year although they’re not as heavy as in March to May.
  • Wildlife viewing is still generally good, although the abundance of water means that game is widely scattered and harder to find .

Where to Safari in Tanzania

tanzania animal safari

This article provides a more detailed guide to the best safari destinations in Tanzania . These are your options:

Northern Tanzania

Open plains and epic savannah make Northern Tanzania a refuge for millions of wild mammals. This is the most popular region to explore . Just fly in and out of Kilimanjaro International Airport then set off on a five to eight-day overland safari.

You can use local flights to access the Serengeti directly, bypassing the other parks. This is a good option for a Tanzania and Kenya safari, or if you only have three to four days in the country.

The Serengeti – These endless grass plains are home to the great wildebeest migration. It’s the most unmissable destination in Tanzania and you really need three days to explore different areas of the park.

To the west of the national park, Grumeti Game Reserve offers exclusive and expensive experiences, particularly with the wildebeest migration.

Ngorongoro Crater – The world’s largest intact volcanic caldera is home to some 30,000 wild mammals including the full big five . For the best experience visit on a sunrise game drive, just as the gate opens. One morning is ample time.

Tarangire – The wild home of elephants and baobabs, along with a superb diversity of other mammals. A good introduction to the safari experience with some intense pachyderm encounters. 24 to 48 hours is recommended.

Lake Manyara – Tanzania’s most beautiful park, with tree-climbing lions, lots of hippos, all manner of antelope species and the world’s largest baboon population. Unlike other destinations, Manyara is as good during the day as at early morning or late afternoon. One day is all you need.

These four destinations are contiguous and easily combined on the Northern Circuit safari route. This can be done over five days but it’s worth making that a week – Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Ngorongoro, then two to three days in the Serengeti.

This is Africa’s most famous multi-day safari circuit. It’s also the best option for a budget Tanzania safari as you won’t need expensive internal flights.

Also in the north of the country is Arusha National Park . This could be a one-day safari option if you don’t have time for elsewhere, for example if you’re visiting Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro. However, it’s not worth adding Arusha National Park onto a longer itinerary – the other parks are so much better.

Southern Tanzania

tanzania animal safari

Southern Tanzania is untouched and under-visited, a vast space of raw and redolent wildlife scenes . If you want to see nature truly untamed then this is where to come. Expect a real off-road adventure.

An overland safari through Southern Tanzania will require eight to ten days if you depart from Dar es Salaam . Local flights land at all these destinations and are recommended if your budget allows. These flights also provide a connection between Ruaha and Selous with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

Mikumi National Park – Green floodplains and large populations of wildebeest and zebra make Mikumi feel like the Serengeti in miniature form. It’s a good standalone destination if you’re short on time but avoid the weekends, when the park gets busy with day-trippers from nearby Dar es Salaam.

Ruaha National Park – One of Africa’s best hidden gems, this enormous park is packed full of scenes of predators meeting prey, along with Tanzania’s largest wild dog and elephant populations.

There’s over 20,000 square kilometres of untouched savannah and only a few visitors. Most game viewing takes place around the Ruaha River and you can mix game drives with walks. Allow at least three days.

Selous Game Reserve – Offering a superb variety of safari activities, this vast reserve (over 50,000 square kilometres!) is home to almost all of Africa’s great mammals.

Take a boat along the Rufiji River , walk in lion country, game drive to wild scenes, and see everything from giraffe to leopard around the camps. 48 hours is ideal.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park – Halfway between Mikumi and Ruaha, this woodland park provides an excellent contrast to Southern Tanzania’s savannah.

Go walking on narrow trails in search of 400 different birds and six species of monkey, including the endemic Iringa red colobus monkey and sanje crested mangabey .

Western Tanzania

tanzania animal safari

Dominated by forest and wild plains, Western Tanzania provides off the beaten track experiences in three very different parks . These destinations are difficult to get to without internal flights, but very rewarding, especially for anyone who has been on a safari before.

Gombe National Park – Best known for its chimpanzee safaris, this remote western park contrasts the safari experience you get on the savannah. Come to see lots of primates in lush, tangled forest.

Katavi National Park – Thousand-strong buffalo herds and plentiful hippos make this grassland savannah a stunning little destination. Katavi is vastly underrated and you may be the only visitors amid a great abundance of wildlife.

Mahale Mountains National Park – Trekking to habituated chimpanzee troops is the major experience here, at a park that’s hard to reach and wild beyond words.

Where to Stay on a Tanzanian Safari

tanzania animal safari

Where you stay is part of the experience. Through the night you hear the sound of elephants . Around camps and lodges you spot animals grazing. The safari never stops as you look out across plains or waterholes.

Location, location, location

Almost everywhere you can stay is deep within nature. So forget some of your modern luxuries. The experience is about wildlife and wilderness, and you’ll connect with your wild side by having canvas as walls, rather than dedicated Wi-Fi or plush bathrooms.

Your tour operator will suggest accommodation and these choices have a big impact on the total safari cost. Look first and foremost at location .

Camps within national parks are the best but are more expensive. Those around a park’s boundaries are in buffer wildlife zones and will be much cheaper, while still connecting you with wildlife.

Be wary of safari itineraries that use camps or lodges in towns , or anywhere more than a few miles from a national park gate.

For example, budget operators will try to use cheap camps in the dusty, rundown town of Karatu , where there’s traffic rather than wildlife, even though Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara are both only 30 kilometres away.

Types of safari accommodation

All the national parks have dedicated camping sites within their boundaries. These can be used if you’re on an overland safari. Tents and camping gear will be packed into your safari vehicle and you’ll set up camp at different locations each night. This is simple accommodation and the best budget option that’s available.

Tented camps provide beds and bathrooms within larger safari-style tents. They are more comfortable than camping sites and a good balance between price, comfort and location. Most visitors don’t need to go for anything more than a tented camp.

Mobile camps are temporary structures that move with the wildlife dependent on the seasons. They are similar to tented camps although more expensive and usually more luxurious, kind of glamping with animals.

Permanent lodges are bigger structures and vary in quality. Again, look for location as much as the facilities on offer.

Five Top Tips for Maximizing the Tanzanian Safari Experience

tanzania animal safari

Everyone has their pre-safari dreams. Perhaps it’s spotting a black rhino, maybe a leopard out on a hunt, or ticking off the full big five ? These dreams excite and inspire. But sometimes the preconceptions start detracting from the experience .

Take a Tanzania safari and it’s almost certain you’ll enjoy intimate encounters that reflect all your dreams. But it won’t happen in the first 30 minutes. So don’t worry if the first day doesn’t deliver five lion prides, a 100 strong elephant herd, and quarreling buffalo.

There is beauty to be discovered at every turn ; don’t miss it because you’re worried that a certain animal hasn’t been seen. Relax, soak up every moment of the experience, and the famed big game will come to you.

2. Forget Animal Tick Lists

A Tanzania safari is not like being in a zoo. It’s an authentic immersion in the wild . Every game drive is different and every moment is unpredictable.

Many people have long tick lists of essential sights. But the beauty of a safari is not glimpsing an animal and putting a tick next to its name; it’s admiring the interaction and realism of a world untouched by man .

Don’t worry about tick lists because they don’t reflect the quality of the experience. Watching a giraffe give birth or lions stare down elephants at a waterhole can’t be reflected with a tick.

3. Always Have Your Camera Ready

tanzania animal safari

The Tanzania safari isn’t restricted to game drives or the time you spend with a guide. It’s a 24 hours a day experience .

Drift off to sleep and you can hear the trumpeted calls of elephants in trees nearby. Drink morning coffee and a zebra herd is grazing beside your tent . Wake up to evocative paw prints in the dirt nearby . All these are part of the safari yet not part of any game drive or activity.

So when a hippo pod rampages across the riverbank, just below your tent, you’ll want to make sure that you have the camera ready. You don’t want to rummage in your bag to find it and miss out on the experience. So always keep your camera to hand , because the wild Tanzanian landscape brings treats at the most unpredictable of times.

4. Dress Comfortably

Tanzania is usually hot and often dusty. Remember, you’re heading out into a wild animal world, so there won’t be the comforts of air-conditioning.

There’s lots of advice out there about the exact clothes to wear on a Tanzania safari. It’s not complicated. Just dress in clothes that you are comfortable in . There’s no need to arrive in full khaki gear and thick walking boots, especially if you’re only going to be doing game drives.

Just one piece of essential advice: avoid wearing blue . This colour attracts tsetse flies, which can be a painful nuisance.

5. Respect the Animals and the Animals Will Reward You

It’s always important to remember where you are. No, not in a theme park or zoo with captive animals. On a safari! You’re catapulted into their world, so it’s essential to respect the rules and not interrupt the natural cycle of life.

Most importantly, don’t make unnecessary noise or leave an impact on the environment . Respect the animals and they’ll reward you with increasing intimacy.

For example, scream wildly because you’ve just seen a rhino, and the rhino is likely to turn around and march the other way. But stay silent , be patient , and the rhino might walk within just a few meters of you.

Upset an elephant with the camera flash and it’s likely to get frustrated and lose all its endearing elegance. But take photos discreetly and you can be treated to the elephant gently caressing her calf and guiding it to water.

My wife and I have done a trip to Tanzania. I wish all who venture forth this advice. Choose your tour guide service wisely after considerable scrutiny. Thanks to my wife’s efforts we were very successful in our choice. Next and most importantly: Treat your personal guide as you would a family member or a long lost friend. Our rewards were unbelievable. Do not try in any way to interact with any of the wildlife. You are an observer and only an observer, more than that and you may be mistaken for a challenger or lunch. Enjoy yourself but leave any intoxicants out of your excursions.

This is fantastic, especially for someone planning their future trip!

I love how you’ve broken it into great sections and also loveee how you’ve said about respecting the animals. That’s soo important!

Thanks for this!

Detailed Table Of 22 Tanzania National Parks

Tanzania safari faqs, how much does a tanzania safari cost.

Tanzania Safari Costs

Budgeting and planning costs part of booking any Tanzania safari. Prices vary widely based on factors like type of accommodation, activities, parks visited, group size, and time of year. Basic options like camping safaris average $200-$300 per person daily while luxury lodges average $700-$1000+ daily. Mid-range lodges and tented camps fall around $350-$550 per day. These prices include park fees, game drives, meals, and guides. Budget extra for flights which run $100-$500+ between parks.

Beyond day rates, costs for safari packages range from a budget under $1500 total per person for 5-7 days up to $10,000+ per person for lavish high-end 2 week itineraries. Safaris averaging 10-14 days will generally total $3000-$5000 per person when including good lodges and activities. Remember peak season from June to October means highest rates.

Ways to save include avoiding peak months, camping instead of lodges, using budget accommodation outside parks, self-driving instead of guided, packing meals, and joining group tours. But don’t skimp too much on activities and park time to see wildlife. Find balance between saving money and having optimal experience.

Tanzania rewards travelers who strategically prioritize where to splurge versus save. Focus budget on maximizing time on game drives, visiting top parks and reserves, and quality accommodation for necessary comfort. Then scale back on things like internal flights, fancy restaurant meals, and expensive hotels in transit. This provides affordable African safari without sacrificing wildlife viewing and adventure. With planning, Tanzania is doable on most budgets.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Tanzania?

With diverse parks and climates, best time for Tanzania safaris depends on your priorities. June to October dry season is considered peak for clear skies, minimal rain, and easily spotted wildlife clustered near dwindling water sources. Annual wildebeest migration river crossings also occur July-August in Grumeti and Mara Rivers, a huge draw. But lodging rates highest and crowds are larger.

November to February wet season has afternoon rain showers, green landscapes and newborn animals. Migratory birds abound November-March. Though wildlife dispersed, still excellent viewing when sunshine emerges after rain. Far fewer tourists and discounted lodge rates.

March to May rainy season has heavy rains making wildlife viewing tougher and travel challenging. Parks are still accessible and lovely when rain pauses. Lowest lodging rates with few tourists.

September to October shoulder season has excellent weather, scenery and wildlife activity as the landscape dries out. Migration enters southern Serengeti. Affordable lodging before peak rates resume.

No definitive “best” time – each season has advantages. Prioritize weather, costs, crowds, wildlife goals when choosing travel months. Be flexible in wet season and research seasonal patterns to maximize sightings year-round.

Azure Zanzibar

It is Tanzania’s incredible diversity of game-viewing areas with unparalleled numbers of game, herds of elephant, giant migrations of zebra and wildebeest that appeals to us.   From the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to the vast herds of game grazing on the endless plains of the Serengeti and the game rich Ngorongoro Crater, as well as the sun-kissed beaches of Zanzibar to the people. Tanzania is home to some charming hosts. There are a few different tribes who make their lives in the bush, but the most well-known is the colorfully dressed Maasai.

Lion World Travel's Ultimate Guide to Tanzania and Zanzibar.

The Serengeti shines as a constant attraction for wildlife lovers. But where else should you go on safari in Tanzania? Here are our top suggestions.

Serengeti National Park

Game viewing is always exceptional in the Serengeti. Roam the great plains in search of the migratory herds of zebra, wildebeest and other grazing animals and their territorial predators: lion, leopard and cheetah, which usually occurs between May and August.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is a remnant of an ancient volcano with one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. Known as ‘the eighth wonder of the world' the Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's best-known wildlife arenas. Deep within the Crater some 25,000 large mammals wander the plains and forests, dominated by enormous bull elephants, rhinos and lions.

Tarangire National Park

In Tarangire National Park, baobabs dwarf the herds of elephants that feed beneath them. Tarangire offers rugged landscape, a unique safari backdrop with rolling grasslands, vibrant swamp land and forests of enigmatic baobab trees, which according to legend were planted “upside down” for growing too tall and proud. During the dry season thousands of animals can be seen migrating to the park from Manyara National Park.

Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara National Park well known for the tree climbing lions, the soda ash lake that attracts thousands and pink flamingos, one of Tanzania’s biggest elephant population, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, warthogs, abundant birdlife, and breathtaking scenery. Viewing a pride of lions relaxing in an acacia tree is a remarkable sight. Why these lions habitually climb trees is still up for debate.

Selous Game Reserve

The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected game reserve on the African continent covering an area of 21,000 square miles, comprised of a vast wilderness with forests, grassy plains, mountains, and open woodlands. It was declared a UNESCO world heritage site thanks to its rich diversity of wildlife and uninterrupted nature. There are vast populations of buffalo, lion, wildebeest and large herds of giraffe, zebra, hippo, large numbers of waterbucks in addition to leopards, crocodiles, and hyenas.

Stone Town, Zanzibar Island

Stone Town is the oldest part of Zanzibar city which is rich in history and culture with winding alleyways, bustling bazaars, mosques, and Arab styles houses. In Zanzibar white sand beaches interspersed with picturesque fishing villages, lapped by the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, provide the perfect place to relax, soak up the sun and take a break after an exhilarating safari.

What animals you will see on Tanzania safari?

In Tanzania, the allure of spotting the 'Big Five' — lions, leopards, buffaloes, rhinos, and elephants—draws many to its safaris. While rhinos are rare in East Africa, they can still be spotted, especially in the Ngorongoro Crater. The other Big Five members are plentiful, promising exciting sightings.

Leopard, photographed in the Serengeti, East Africa, by Altezza Travel team in 2023

But there's more than the Big Five. Tanzania teems with wildlife like cheetahs, wildebeests, zebras, and monkeys. Bird lovers will be thrilled by the 1,156 bird species, including over 800 resident and hundreds of migratory species, best seen from December to April. At Altezza Travel, we have many passionate birders who are absolutely delighted with the diversity of avian life in Tanzania.

Tanzania Safari vehicles

During your safari, expect to spend significant time in vehicles for game drives, typically 5-8 hours daily. Sometimes, there are opportunities for walking safaris. You can also choose to have rest days at lodges, enjoying a more relaxed pace and lodge amenities.

The choice of a tour company with comfortable, well-equipped vehicles is essential for a great Tanzania safari experience. Our fleet includes customized Land Cruisers made in 2016-2023. Each vehicle is outfitted with amenities like Wi-Fi, a fridge, comfortable seating, and charging stations, making even long drives enjoyable.

We take vehicle maintenance seriously, ensuring each car is thoroughly checked and in top condition before every safari. This attention to detail ensures smooth travel to various national parks, minimizing the chances of any issues during your journey.

Tanzania Safari guides

A skilled safari guide greatly enhances your experience. They will tell you fascinating facts about what you see. For example, why zebras rest their heads together, which animals intimidate lions, or why elephants flare their ears when alarmed.

Beyond wildlife expertise, guides are vital cultural intermediaries. They help to bridge language barriers with locals, such as when interacting with the Maasai.

Tanzania safari guides will take you to the most iconic places in the national parks

At Altezza, we meticulously select our driver-guides, ensuring they excel in wildlife knowledge and driving in the wilderness. We attract top talent by offering competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits.

Tanzania Safari camps and lodges

Tanzania safaris are not just about wilderness adventures. The lodges where you stay play a big part in the experience too. Picture enjoying a drink on a terrace, overlooking the sprawling savannah – it's quintessential safari.

At Altezza, choosing the right lodges for our Tanzania safari tours is key. We scrutinize everything from room quality to staff professionalism and menu variety. Our team personally visits each lodge to ensure they match our high standards.

The location of lodges is vital. We pick lodges and camps for their stunning views, both from guest rooms and communal areas. Whether in the Serengeti, near the Ngorongoro Crater, or by Lake Manyara, you'll always feel immersed in the savannah's spirit.

Hot air balloon flights

Experiencing a hot air balloon ride is a highlight of any luxury safari. Floating above Tanzania's savannah, it provides a breathtaking vantage point for spotting wildlife. Available in the northern regions – Tarangire and Serengeti National Parks, this is undoubtedly one of Africa's most unforgettable experiences. Many of Altezza Travel's clients were delighted to add air safari to their itineraries.

Hot air balloon flights

Bush aviation

Air travel significantly streamlines safari itineraries. Flying can turn the lengthy 8-9 hour drive from Arusha to the distant areas of the Serengeti into a convenient 2-hour flight. This quick transition means you can start your wildlife adventure almost as soon as you land, maximizing your time for wildlife viewing. Altezza Travel managers can easily add convenient air flights to your safari itinerary.

Which Tanzania Safari parks are best to visit?

Tanzania's most popular parks are undoubtedly in the Northern safari circuit. However, seasoned visitors or those looking for something different should consider venturing to the southern and western parts of the country. There, more exotic and less frequented experiences await.

Northern Parks

The Northern safari circuit is ideal for those who visit Tanzania for the first time or who haven't yet experienced all of its northern parks.

Serengeti National Park, is famed for its vast landscapes and rich wildlife. Central Serengeti is an amazing wildlife hotspot all year round. In July-August, the Northern Serengeti river crossings become the stage for the Great Migration's most dramatic moments, a must-see spectacle. The endless plains of Southern Serengeti come alive in January-February when thousands of wildebeests give birth. Meanwhile, the Western Serengeti offers a contrasting landscape of dense bush and forests, perfect for wildlife photography.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is another UNESCO World Heritage site alongside Serengeti National Park. The famous crater formed by a colossal volcanic eruption is a highlight of Tanzania's Northern Circuit safaris. The Ngorongoro Crater today resembles a scene from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World.' It boasts the world's highest animal density and is is a must-visit for an unforgettable safari experience.

Lake Manyara National Park is famous for the stunning sight of thousands of pink flamingos flocking along its shores each year. Lake Manyara National Park boasts a rich variety of animals. The lake itself adds a beautiful, serene backdrop, setting it apart from other parks.

Tarangire National Park is a must-see for anyone on a Tanzanian safari. It's a place where you can find towering baobabs, big prides of lions and herds of elephants roaming around, along with giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, and antelopes. Rare scenes of tree-climbing lions can also be spotted in Tarangire National Park.

Arusha National Park is another popular kick-off point for Tanzanian safaris. It's perfect for those with limited time since Arusha NP can offer a great one-day safari experience. This wildlife park is unique as it allows walking safaris, letting travelers who visit Tanzania get up close to wildlife.

Southern Parks

The Northern parks of Tanzania often steal the spotlight in safari itineraries. However, one shouldn't be overlooking the southern Tanzania circuit. These lesser-known Tanzania safari destinations will be particularly interesting for those on their second visit to Tanzania.

Ruaha National Park in Southern Tanzania is the country's second-largest national park. It is home to the largest population of elephants in Africa. Ruaha is a wildlife enthusiast's paradise, teeming with lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, and a variety of antelopes. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for more off-the-beaten-path safari experience.

Nyerere National Park, formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, is Tanzania's largest national park and perfect for those seeking quieter safari trails. After the area received national park status, all hunting was prohibited. Now Nyerere NP is an amazing destination for peacefully observing animals in their natural habitats.

Western parks

Remote parks of Tanzania's west are accessible primarily by air. These parks are an excellent choice for those who have already explored other regions of Tanzania or are on an extended trip looking to maximize their experience.

Mahale Mountains National Park, located near Lake Tanganyika, is one of Tanzania's most remote parks. The presence of Lake Tanganyika creates strikingly different landscapes compared to the northern parks. Mahale Mountains NP is a top spot for seeing chimpanzees, yellow baboons, red colobus, as well as blue, red-tailed, and vervet monkeys, among other primates.

Situated in the western region of Tanzania, Katavi National Park is a pristine wilderness sanctuary. It is known for the world's largest herds of buffalo. This relatively unexplored park features a very diverse range of habitats. From reed-filled floodplains teeming with hippos and crocodiles, to woodlands, expansive grasslands, dense forests, and crystal-clear seasonal lakes.

Gombe Stream National Park, nestled by Lake Tanganyika, gained fame through Jane Goodall's groundbreaking chimpanzee research. The park is a hotspot for chimpanzees. it's also home to other primates like blue monkeys, olive baboons, and various colobus monkeys. In addition, here you can see various birds, bush pigs, hippos, and even leopards, the top predators of the park's monkeys.

Popular questions about Tanzania Safari

To really soak in Tanzania's safari wonders like Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, and Tarangire National Park, aim for a 5-7 day trip. This will give you enough time to explore the northern circuit and see the Big Five and other key animals. For those who can stay longer, there are incredible safari journeys lasting 20+ days!

If you're short on time, a quick safari covering Arusha and either Tarangire or Lake Manyara National Park can be done in 1-2 days. It's a great snapshot of Tanzania's wildlife. And, if you're keen on the Serengeti but pressed for time, flying directly there is a good option.

Choosing the right time for a safari in Tanzania really depends on your preferences. The dry season, spanning June to October and January to March, are ideal for wildlife spotting as animals gather around water sources. You'll enjoy sunny days, but expect crowds, especially during the Great Migration and the birthing seasons of zebras and wildebeests.

On the other hand, the rainy season, in April-May and November-December, offers a lush landscape with fewer visitors and potential discounts at lodges. Transition periods like late March, early June, late October, and November are perfect for a more peaceful experience, balancing good weather with fewer tourists.

You can learn more about the best time for a Tanzania safari and the recommendations of Altezza Travel team in this article .

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a mesmerizing natural spectacle for wildlife lovers, featuring over a million animals traversing the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Starting with calving in the southern Serengeti, near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, they wind through the Serengeti towards Kenya's Masai Mara, returning by year's end. One of the most dramatic parts of this migration is the Mara River crossing. Here, the migration herds face the challenging currents and hungry predators lurking in the waters. Watching thousands of these animals navigate the Mara river is a highlight for many travelers.

The Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti offers year-round drama, peaking with the wildebeest calving season in February-March and dramatic river crossing in May-August, before moving to Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve from August to October.

Kilimanjaro International Airport is the gateway to northern Tanzania national parks like Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, and is close to Mount Kilimanjaro. For the southern parks, Dar Es Salaam International Airport is the go-to entry point.

For a safari, choose shirts and pants in neutral colors like khaki or gray to blend in and hide dust. Avoid white, blue, and camouflage clothing. Blue attracts tsetse flies and camouflage is restricted for civilians. Dresses are great for lodges but pants are practical for drives. Remember sun protection: a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. For footwear, sandals are fine for lodges, but closed shoes are better for drives. Pack a warm jacket for chilly mornings and evenings, especially in high-altitude areas. Learn more in this article .

Two countries in East Africa provide remarkable safari experiences: Kenya & Tanzania. However, Tanzania frequently stands out. Many prefer it for its less crowded parks and abundant wildlife, which includes unique animal sightings. The extended Great Migration period in the Serengeti National Park is also a major attraction. Additionally, the country offers the opportunity to climb Mount Kilimanjaro , Africa's highest mountain.

Leaving the car on a Tanzania safari is allowed in designated areas only. Leaving a car right in the middle of the national park isn’t allowed because of safety considerations.

Regular visitors are not permitted to operate drones in Tanzania's national parks. However, special permissions can be obtained for filming projects. This process typically takes 3-4 months and incurs additional costs. Bringing a drone into Tanzania without the necessary permissions risks confiscation by customs officials upon arrival. You may read more about drone filming .

Wi-Fi is available in our safari vehicles. However, please note that in the more remote areas of national parks, coverage might be limited. You can also expect Wi-Fi in hotels and lodges across Tanzania. The connection in those locations can sometimes be intermittent too.

What else can you do in Tanzania?

Climb mount kilimanjaro.

Tanzania's allure isn't just its wildlife safaris. The challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro also draws many. This climb demands thorough preparation, typically taking about 7 days. Other fantastic hikes like Mount Meru are also available. They may help to prepare for Mt Kilimanjaro, if you have the extra time.

Kilimanjaro Climbing

Visit Zanzibar and other Indian Ocean islands

Tanzania offers more than just mainland adventures. It's also the gateway to the Indian Ocean's enchanting islands like Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia Island. The Zanzibar Archipelago is a favorite for its historical charm and beautiful beaches. Relaxing on its beaches and exploring Stone Town is perfect for unwinding post-safari. The lesser-known Pemba and Mafia islands provide pristine coral reefs, amazing diving, and a tranquil escape.

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on  National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late  Dian Fossey  back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

Secret Murders Alleged at Tourist Hotspot for Luxury Safaris

A wildlife tourism project has lost its funding after being tied to several extrajudicial killings, disappearances, and sexual assaults.

The World Bank has decided to pull funding for a controversial tourism project following accusations it has led to extrajudicial killings, disappearances, and the sexual abuse of local villagers in Tanzania.

Launched in 2017, the program aimed to improve the management of natural resources and tourism in Southern Tanzania, including Ruaha National Park (RUNAPA), which has been tied to a cascade of human rights abuses , according to the Oakland Institute, a California-based advocacy group.

The World Bank has already disbursed $100 million of the $150 million project, known as REGROW, according to The Oakland Institute.

The Tanzanian government plans included work aimed at nearly doubling the size of the park, the largest protected wildlife area in the country, from one million to over two million hectares. But the expansion plans have left the local villagers high and dry: The plan has included Tanzanian government efforts to forcibly evict over 21,000 people to expand the park, without providing villagers compensation or other land, according to The Oakland Institute.

“Communities report that park rangers, receiving funding through REGROW, have been implicated in murders of several villagers and numerous instances of violence since the project began,” according to a recent report published by the institute. “The World Bank, however, has turned a blind eye to the horrific abuses unleashed on the communities by choosing to not enforce its own safeguards.”

Even as local villagers have pushed back on the human rights abuses, luxury tourist options for visiting the park abound. From sunrise hot air balloon tours over the park with champagne celebrations, to camps with private lodges and spa attractions like pools, and massages—visitors from around the globe have continued to tour the park despite the allegations.

Wildlife reserves have continued to be a boon for Tanzania, pulling in billions of dollars of tourism revenue annually. But the ongoing issues with the REGROW project have raised questions about the rights of local villagers living near tourist attractions.

“This should be a wakeup call for the Bank’s leadership in Washington, D.C.—you cannot continue to ignore the voices of the people on the ground who are struggling to survive as a result of your so-called ‘development’ projects,” Anuradha Mittal, Executive Director of the Oakland Institute said.

The World Bank told The Daily Beast it had suspended further funding for the project after receiving information that “suggests breaches of our policies in the implementation of the REGROW project.”

“The World Bank is deeply concerned about the allegations of abuse and injustice related to the Resilient Natural Resources Management for Tourism and Growth (REGROW) project in Tanzania,” a World Bank spokesperson told The Daily Beast, adding that the World Bank will work with the authorities moving forward to try to ensure the project can “improve the lives of Tanzanians.”

The backpedaling from the World Bank comes after years of the Oakland Institute pushing against the project. Villagers have also taken steps to protest the project, and have on multiple occasions turned to the legal system for recourse, without any success. Last year villagers filed a case in the East African Court of Justice against the expansion of the park as well.

The Oakland Institute called the decision “long overdue.”

“It sends a resounding message to the Tanzanian government that there are consequences for its rampant rights abuses taking place across the country to boost tourism,” Mittal said. “The days of impunity are finally coming to an end.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a British billionaire who invested in Asilia Africa, one of the premier safari companies in Africa that operates luxury camps in the Ruaha park, told The Daily Beast through a spokesperson he wants to uphold the rights of local people.

“Sir Jim Ratcliffe is committed to long term conservation in Africa. He is proud to support Six Rivers Africa, which is a not-for-profit conservation initiative, with the aim of understanding, protecting and promoting biodiversity in the wetlands and former hunting areas of Tanzania. The organsation has zero-tolerance of all human rights abuses and is committed to upholding the rights of local people and national conservation regulations as it invests in wilderness areas for the benefit of future generations.”

Reparations should be provided to the villagers who have been victims of the human rights abuses, The Oakland Institute said.

“Moreover, villagers who have been victims of gross human rights violations and crippling livelihood restrictions must receive adequate, effective, and prompt reparations to ensure justice and help redress the harm they have endured,” the Oakland Institute said in a statement.

The World Bank did not answer questions about whether it will participate in providing reparations to the affected villagers.
