Live reviews

The District have so many experimental qualities about their fantastically descriptive sound that they make which could be played at a rock bar or even featured on a soundtrack to a movie. “Long Distance” is their opening song, and it’s safe to say that it’s one of those that you can just close your eyes, put your head back and chill out to the riff. There’s a little bit of a Kings of Leon influence vocally, and then maybe even a brit pop vibe too. The common denominator is that it makes everyone in this room dance their socks off from start to finish. “Rocking Chair” is a more upbeat kind of songs with some beautifully crafted melodies hosting an entertaining back and forth in contrapuntal fashion. They’re one of those bands that have such a fun vibe about them with the amount of confidence that they showcase when performing live, and it translates to the audience. Their sound is distinctive and the punters are left very happy and content after this memorable performance.

Even though the Districts were great performers, the show was a disaster. I saw so many acts of abuse and sexual assaults during the show. The girls including my friend around me were sexually harassed and they couldn’t do anything about it. The fans were drunk and wild. They were crazy all over the place and that was very sad. Instead of having a good time listening to the Districts, I had to watch out for my safety the entire time. I’m sorry but if you’re artists, you should have told your fans to behave and be kind. Isn’t that what artists should do? Spread love and kindness?

I’m serious concerned about my safety after this show.

Also, I heard Abi Reimold is their close friend so she always opens for them, but she sucks so much. I had no idea what she was doing bye.

This band is an incredible group of talents. It was so intriguing watching them play off each other, with songs so many of us have listened to over and over finally being deconstructed in front of us. The lead, of course, is electric, and his deranged rocking was worth the price of admission and then some. The venue seemed a little disengaged technically, as the band frequently had to fix their amps and such, but they were so darn good it wasn't really a problem in the end. Lovely guys too; wish they had more merch so I could show em off! Happily listening and re-listening to their album now. Go see them!

I attended with my daughter and we were first shocked at how young the crowd was so we thought maybe we have been listening to a teen band and felt out of place. As soon as the music started and the lights went out we never thought about it again because it was so amazing. You were our favorite even though we came to see Hippocampus! You are very talented and remind me of some of the 90’s bands I used to love. I’m realizing that some teens and college kids actually have great taste in music and so does this 56 year old woman and her 23 year old daughter!

The show was beyond amazing, the bluebird is one of my favorite venues throughout Denver and it was completely perfect and packed full of people but the coolest part is all three bands kept the intimacy, the outfits were great as openers being local, sun club helped pump up the room and the districts ended it perfectly sound, the show was perfect, I can't wait until they come through town again, the hour on a perfect show with a perfect price. I got more than what I paid for throughout the whole experience. Thank you.

I saw The Districts on their last stop of the spring tour in Columbus. This was my 5th time seeing them live and without a doubt the best show I've seen them play.

They have really started to hone in on their live set and really bring the noise and fun.

They bring so much passion and energy to the stage and are a complete blast to see live when the crowd gets behind them.

I have not much idea how the show was. Waited almost three hours for it to start, at which time the venue was so packed with beery people it was hard to see and the sound was totally distorted. This is more a complaint about the venue, it's hard to comment on the show as a result.

Gibsonsmith’s profile image

Amazing show. The Nude Party were a great opener with awesome vibes, and Twin Peaks weren't that bad, although the mixing for their set seemed to have excess distortion for whatever reason. This was my first time at Motorco, and I definitely see myself going back again.

The districts concert made my heart feel things it has never felt before. The emotion in their proformance was exhilarating. I loved every second of being in the venue, and their opening bands. I give this concert the highest rating possible.

Mckaylie98’s profile image

This show was amazing! The Districts sound even better live and I loved how they interacted with the audience. I really enjoyed seeing you guys at the Rialto venue, though the audience seemed to be a little to rowdy at times.

A 5 Day tour discovering the best of northern England - the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District . Highlights include The Scottish Borders , Hadrian's Wall, Lake Windermere, Wordsworth's Cottage, the Yorkshire Dales, York and Yorkminster, Robin Hood's Bay , Alnwick and Berwick on Tweed. DAY 1: BERWICK - ALNWICK CASTLE - YORK Your tour starts by hugging the magnificent East Lothian coastline as we travel towards the walled border town of Berwick Upon Tweed . After stopping to admire the fortifications, you continue to Bamburgh Castle . This immsense seaside fortress has stood guard over the Northumberland coastline for over 1400 years and is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country. Leaving Bamburgh behind, you travel towards the city of York on the Great North Road, a route that has carried countless Roman legions between the remote Northern outposts and the more populous settlements of Roman Britannia. In the late afternoon, you arrive in York, your base for the next two nights.

DAY 2: YORK - WHITBY - YORK Today you can decide what you want to do. You can choose to spend the day exploring the medieval heart of York , an ancient city with a colourful history dating back to the times of the Romans, Vikings, and Normans. There's much to see and do: you can visit a chocolate museum, find out about the Vikings, or even just stroll around the ancient walls. Alternatively, you can journey out with your guide on a half-day excursion to the magnificent North York Moors National Park.  Lunch will be in Whitby , a bustling fishing port and the inspiration for the fertile imagination of author Bram Stoker, who stayed in the Royal Hotel on the western side of Whitby while writing his famous novel Dracula. After lunch and free time in Whitby we travel to the fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay *, a perfectly preserved conservation village of winding lanes and narrow alleys before returning towards York. * The minicoach cannot access the main village because of local restrictions. The coach will drop you at the top of the village and you must walk down (and back up!) a steep hill to reach the old village centre. DAY 3: YORKSHIRE DALES - MASHAM - KESWICK You're picked up from your accommodation and head west into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park . Established in 1954, the Yorkshire Dales National Park has outstanding scenery, a range of wildlife habitats, and rich cultural heritage. It's a special place - a fantastic outdoor arena for recreation and relaxation and a haven for wildlife. Continuing west, the route takes you through the Northern Dales - the centre of the Dales cattle trade. The final leg of today’s journey takes you high up into the remote hills of the Yorkshire Dales before descending into the lively market town of Keswick where you're dropped off at your accommodation and have free time to explore this charming town.

DAY 4: CASTLERIGG - ULLSWATER - LAKE WINDERMERE - HAWKESHEAD - KESWICK After breakfast you head a short distance out of town to the mysterious Castlerigg standing stones . Thought by many to have been built over 5,000 years ago and the scene of ancient rituals. You then travel on to the shores of Ullswater described as England’s most beautiful lake where you can take a forest walk to see the mighty Aira Force waterfall. Continuing south over the narrow and winding Kirkstone Pass you stop at Lake Windermere where you have the option to take a leisurely cruise on the Lake or simply eat lunch while enjoying views of the mountains and lakes. After lunch you travel around the southern tip of Windermere and on towards Conis-ton Water and shortly afterwards you arrive at the picturesque conservation village of Hawkeshead , where the poet William Wordsworth attended Grammar School. After free time to explore the village you take the narrow country lanes north towards Gras-mere, which Wordsworth described as “the loveliest spot that man hath found”. There is free time to visit Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage or enjoy the peace and tranquility of the Wordsworth Daffodil Garden by the River Rothy. In the late afternoon you return to Keswick. DAY 5: HARTSIDE PASS - HADRIAN'S WALL - JEDBURGH - EDINBURGH Leaving the Lakes behind you start your climb towards Hartside Pass , at over 1900ft- on a clear day the hills and mountains of Scotland and the English Lake District are clearly visible. We follow the route of the old sheep drovers road between England and Scotland. Stopping at Hadrians Wall , built by Emporer Hadrian to keep the Scots out of the Roman Empire there’s an opportunity to explore some of the Roman remains and walk in the footsteps of the Roman Centurions who patrolled this desolate frontier of the Empire. Following the ancient Roman Dere Street we cross the border into Scotland and continue on to the Border town of Jedburgh for refreshments by the ruins of Jedburgh Abbey . Our final stop is at the world famous Scott’s view with stunning views over the River Tweed and the Cheviot hills that form the border between Scotland before continuing North to Edinburgh. What people love about uk lake district tours.

We had a great trip. Ouf tour guide Chris couldn’t have been mord pleasing, caring and committed to making our trip as enjoyable as possible. He was an excellent driver , very safe and mindful of our comfort. Also we were blessed with the flexibility of thd tour in very wet conditions.
Rabbie's Tours did not disappoint from start to finish. We met their team at Edinburgh Bus Station and they made us welcome and clearly explained who our driver would be and when and where to expect them. Right on time, Bruce arrived, helped us load up and got us underway for our trip to Keswick. Rabbie's uses Mercedes mini-coaches that seat 16. On a previous tour we found the double seats on the right a bit cramped so this time made a beeline to the back row of three seats that offered a more comfortable ride. The tour was delightful, Bruce kept us informed and entertained pretty well every mile of the trip. His knowledge and sense of humour were a welcome addition on the ride. The small coaches allowed him to take us on some narrow tracks and he used his experience to alter the route when weather threatened. There were frequent stops whether for short hikes, seeing sights, or just a leg stretch, with our driver always pointing out where to find a toilet as well as offering meal suggestions at lunch and dinner time.
Our guides were terrific, and so was the Glaramara Hotel , both dining services and all other staff!

Lake District Itinerary 1 Day Plan: The BEST Day Trip!

Some links in this post contain affiliate links. I receive a small commission if you use the links at no extra cost to you! Happy reading 😀

Even if you only have a day to explore the Lake District, it’s still a chance to see some of the most beautiful scenery England has to offer.

The 2362 square kilometres of English countryside is famous for its mountains, lakes, hiking trails, and traditional English villages, and it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful national parks in the UK.

However, seeing everything the Lake District has to offer in one day would be impossible. It’s a big place, and in a day you can only scratch the surface.

But if you do only have a day to explore, I still recommend doing it. Just driving through the landscapes of the Lake District is enough to warrant a day visit.

This post is split into two parts, an itinerary for two different types of people. The first suits a slower traveller ; someone who doesn’t need to rush to see it ‘all’.

And then the second, an itinerary that’s suited to someone who is happy whizzing around, seeing as many parts of the Lake District as possible.

Whichever type of traveller you are, this post details how to experience and enjoy the Lake District in just one day.

Lake District 1 day itinerary

Lake District Itinerary 1 Day: A Summary

The Lake District is located in the north of England, around a 6-hour drive from London. It’s one of the country’s most famous national parks, with almost 16 million tourists visiting every year.

For us, it’s somewhere where we can escape the bustle of London and retreat to the countryside for a few days of walking, hiking, home-cooked meals, large glasses of red wine by the fire and hearty pub lunches. Sounds dreamy, right?

Whilst the Lake District deserves more than a day to visit, a day is better than nothing.

Just driving through the green, rolling hills, past fields of grazing sheep and cows, with the famous Lake District grey slate buildings and Roman walls. Visiting the Lake District, even for a day, is one of the best ways to see the real heart of the English countryside.

Where to stay in the Lake District

If you’re only staying in the Lake District for one day or one night, I recommend staying in Ambleside. Ambleside is known as the ‘heart of the Lake District’, and is one of my personal favourite areas , as it’s within walking distance of Lake Windemere.

If you’re only visiting the Lake District for one day, it’s an easy way to see some of the quintessential grey slate buildings, traditional pubs, and modern Lake District restaurants.

  • If you’re a solo traveller in Ambleside , I recommend staying in the  YHA Hostel.  It’s a short distance from the centre of Ambleside, and you’ll be able to meet other solo backpackers. ➡  BOOK THIS HOSTEL NOW!
  • Want a cute and cosy cottage in Ambleside?  Our favourite is  Grayling Cottage . It’s just a one-minute walk from Ambleside town centre and is beautifully decorated. ➡  BOOK THIS COTTAGE NOW!
  • For a luxurious one-night stay in Ambleside,  check out  The Ambleside Inn .  It’s an 18th-century hotel which will give you a true ‘English countryside’ experience. ➡  BOOK THIS HOTEL NOW!

How do I get around the Lake District?

If you can, take a car to get around the Lake District. If you only have one day, you don’t want to be spending hours waiting for public transport. Don’t have a car? We rent our cars in the UK from this company . They’re reliable, cheap and have car rentals all over the world! ➡ LOOK AT CAR HIRE PRICES IN THE UK NOW!

However, if you haven’t got access to a car, exploring the Lake District in a day can still be done! The Lake District has amazing public transport (a lot better than some of the rest of the country), and you can whizz around on buses and boats. For more information about travelling around the Lake District without a car, you can check out my guide here.

Tips for driving in the Lake District

Driving in the Lake District is an experience due to its narrow and winding roads. Most of the time the roads won’t be too busy, unless you are travelling during the English summer months (June – August). When driving around the Lake District, just be sure to:

  • Keep an eye on the weather, as it can change quickly. The Lake District experiences a lot of rain.
  • Parking can be expensive. Download the apps RingGo and JustPark to make parking easier and quicker.
  • Be prepared for wildlife in the middle of the road at any time of day.

Lake District Itinerary 1 Day: Route One

This itinerary is for a slower traveller visiting the Lake District in one day.

Bowness-on-Windemere > Lake Windemere > Ambleside > Latrigg > Keswick

🌅 Morning: Eat breakfast in Bowness-on-Windemere, followed by a lake activity on Lake Windemere, the biggest lake in the national park. This lake is walkable from Bowness, so you can spend a couple of hours here after breakfast. Either hire a paddle board or a small boat to experience the lake. Stop for lunch at The Boathouse before heading off for your afternoon activities.

⛰️ Afternoon: Head to Ambleside, around a 10-minute drive north of Bowness-on-Windemere. Explore the town, stop for coffee , and have a slow walk up to Stock Ghyll Force waterfall. If you’re checking into a hotel for the night, this is a great time to do so.

🌇 Evening: In the evening, take a drive to Latrigg . It should only take around 30 minutes and is one of the best viewpoints in the Lake District National Park, and one that doesn’t take long to hike to! The viewpoint is a short 15-minute walk from the car park, and it has beautiful views over Keswick during sunset.

As you’re then only five minutes from Keswick, you can eat dinner here and explore. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants to choose from, and it is also known for some of the best Indian restaurants in the Lake District too!

Alternative option from Keswick: Visit the mystical Castlerigg Stone Circle ! Find out more information about the Neolithic site here.

Lake District Itinerary 1 Day: Route two

If you’d like to see a little more during your trip to the Lake District, this one-day itinerary is for those who can travel around at a faster pace.

Coniston (Coniston Water) > Tarn Hows > Ambleside > Grasmere > Waterhead

🌅 Morning: Start off with a wild swim in Coniston Water. Coniston Water is one of my favourite places to wild swim in the Lake District because of its calm waters and absence of large motorised boats (unlike Lake Windemere). There are also some great places to grab breakfast in Coniston, like our favourite, Herdwick’s Cafe.

⛰️ Afternoon: A short 10-minute drive from Coniston is Tarn Hows , one of the Lake District’s easiest yet most scenic walks. There are lots of green spaces for a picnic, so if the weather is nice, pick up some lunch in Coniston beforehand.

After Tarn Hows , head to Ambleside. Grab a coffee, browse the shops, and check into your hotel before driving to another quintessential Lake District town; Grasmere . Grasmere is one of the prettiest towns in the Lake District, and even if you only visit for 30-45 minutes, it’s worth strolling through.

🌇 Evening: For your evening in the Lake District, head to the waterfront at Lake Windemere. There are plenty of pubs to choose from, at the Waterhead, in Bowness-on-Windemere or in Windemere itself. These three areas all have beautiful lake views, and it’s a chance to relax after your busy day and watch the sunset.

➡ Don’t forget to pre-book your Lake District accommodation . You can check prices and availability here.

Is 1 day enough in the Lake District?

One day in the Lake District is a short amount of time, and if you can visit for longer, it is worth doing. To really experience the Lake District, it’s hikes, walks, quintessential villages and copious amounts of things to do, I recommend staying for at least 4-5 nights.

However, if you are on a tight time schedule, the Lake District can still be enjoyed within a day. You may only get to see a couple of places, but it’s still enough to enjoy the warm and welcoming Lake District atmosphere and to see some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole of the UK.

the districts uk tour

How many days do I need for the Lake District?

If you are visiting the Lake District for the first time, I recommend at least 4-5 nights.

This gives you the opportunity to hike some of the biggest peaks (like Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain) and swim in some of the lakes. It will also give you enough time to enjoy the scenery and get to know some of the small Lake District villages.

Other things to do in the Lake District

There are plenty of things to do in the Lake District. It’s one of the reasons why we return again and again each year! Some of the best things in the Lake District include:

  • Hiking Scafell Pike , Helm Crag or Helvellyn
  • Walking around some of the Lake Districts’ famous lakes, including our favourite; Blea Tarn
  • Enjoying the nightlife and pubs in Keswick
  • Visiting the busy market town of Kendal
  • Trying water sports like kayaking, paddle boarding and rowing
  • Exploring the Rydal Caves
  • Take a trip to a local brewery
  • Taking a lake cruise around Lake Windemere
  • Enjoying fish and chips near the lake
  • Walking the Orsett Head trail from Windemere
  • Eating fudge at Roly’s in Keswick
  • Visiting the Honister Pass

lake district 1 day itinerary

When is the best time to visit the Lake District?

You can visit the Lake District 365 days a year ; as it’s an ‘any kind of weather’ destination in the UK. However, if you want the cheapest accommodation prices, visit in the shoulder season (autumn and spring). During the winter months ( November – February), you can expect layers of snow to be covering the trails and paths.

Summer months in the UK (June – August) are always the most expensive months to visit the Lake District, as well as being the busiest. But of course, it’s when you’ll get the best weather, with dry, hot and sunny days.

➡ Visiting the Lake District in winter ? Check out this detailed guide on what to do during the colder months.

The Lake District Explorer 3 day tour

Derwentwater

Enjoy the poetry of nature, learn to love England’s most inspirational landscapes, and follow in the footsteps of artists and writers.

Tour Highlights

Ullswater - The second largest lake in the English Lake District is famous for its sublime, tranquil beauty.

Aira Force Waterfall - A lovely stone bridge crosses the fabulously flowing waterfalls.

Castlerigg Stone Circle - It’s like a miniature Stonehenge. Although you can decide whether it’s more beautiful.

Lake Windermere - You can choose to wander the shores or put on your sailing hat and go for a cruise.

Derwent Water - This gorgeous location was used in Star Wars - The Force Awakens . But the lasers and spaceships seem a million miles away from this peaceful area.

Honister Pass - Simply relax and enjoy the gorgeous views of the monumental mountains.

Your journey

You may get a little poetic in the Lake District .

The lakes are so moving you’ll want to compose verses about their beauty. The silent Castlerigg standing stones are so mysterious you'll think about them for days. And the mountains are so magnificent you'll get lyrical about their rugged peaks and soothing slopes.

Take this tour and discover how and why this gorgeous area has inspired England's greatest poets and writers.

If you love this itinerary but want to start in England, this tour also departs from Manchester .

Tour Details

  • Pack your waterproof clothing and walking shoes
  • Some attraction tickets can be purchased in advance when you book your tour. You’ll have the option to add at check-out. Other attractions will not be available to book beforehand, instead you can purchase those while on tour.
  • Transport in a 16 seat Mercedes mini-coach
  • Air conditioning as standard
  • The stories and services of an English-speaking driver-guide
  • Tour accommodation
  • Travel over the smooth rolling hills of the Scottish Borders
  • Explore the ancient ruins of Penrith Castle
  • Take as many photographs as you can at ‘England’s most beautiful lake’, Ullswater
  • Relax in the market town of Keswick

You depart Edinburgh and head South through the Scottish Borders. You can enjoy the gorgeous rolling expanses of the Galloway Hills and Southern Uplands as we travel to our first stop of the day, the Victorian spa town of Moffat.

From Moffat you continue south over the border into England and head to the historic Cumbrian market town of Penrith. Here you have the chance to enjoy lunch and explore the imposing ruins of Penrith Castle. This uniquely coloured castle played a key role in defending the border from invading Scots.

After lunch we enter the Lake District National Park and travel along the northern shores of Ullswater. This lake is often described as England’s most beautiful lake, and it’s here we give you the chance to take a forest walk and see the mighty Aira Force waterfall.

You then travel towards Keswick, stopping outside the town to visit the mysterious Castlerigg standing stones, thought to have been built over 5,000 years ago and once a lively hub of ancient pagan rituals.

You have a short journey into the lively market town of Keswick where you’re dropped off at your accommodation and free to explore the charming town.

  • Stare in wonder at the views on an optional boat trip, Lake Windermere
  • Wander around the cosy village of Hawkshead
  • Enjoy the peace of the Wordsworth Memorial Daffodill Garden

After breakfast, you take in views of Ullswater Lake as we head along country roads to its southern shores.

You continue further south and travel over the narrow and winding Kirkstone Pass towards the lovely Lake Windermere. Here you have the option to take a leisurely cruise on the Lake or eat lunch while enjoying sublime views of the surrounding scenery.

After lunch you travel around the southern tip of Windermere and on towards Coniston Water. Your next stop is the picturesque conservation village of Hawkshead, where the poet William Wordsworth attended Grammar School.

After exploring the cosy village, you take the narrow country lanes north towards Grasmere, which Wordsworth described as “the loveliest spot that man hath found”.

There's free time to visit Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage, taste the legendary gingerbread, or enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the Wordsworth Daffodil Garden by the River Rothy.

In the late afternoon, you return to Keswick.

  • Set your sights on sweepings views from atop the Whinlatter Pass
  • Learn about the slate mines at the Honister Mountain Pass

We pick you up from your accommodation and head for the Whinlatter Forest Park and over the Whinlatter Pass into the most dramatic landscapes that the Lake District has to offer.

You journey along winding lanes, through the rural village of High Lorton, past the shores of Crummock Water and Buttermere, and towards the Honister Mountain Pass.

Stopping amongst the mountains you have the opportunity to visit old slate workings, where a small number of Cumbrians continue to make their living.

After refreshments, you continue through the forests of Borrowdale, passing Derwent Water, where there’s free time for lunch and shopping.

Once you’ve eaten lunch, you begin your return journey, heading towards Penrith and north towards the border. After crossing into Scotland you take a stop in the town of Biggar, a royal burgh since 1415. From here it’s a leisurely drive through the rolling border hills back to Edinburgh.

Accommodation

Where does this tour stay overnight.

You stay in the lively market town of Keswick*.

* Please be aware that Keswick is busy. You may need to be flexible with rooms we're able to reserve for you here. If you'd prefer to find your own accommodation for this location, please choose the 'book your own accommodation' option when you book your tour.

How can I book accommodation?

Accommodation is not included in the price of your tour. To book accommodation, there are two options: either Rabbie’s Tours can book it for you, or you can book your own. For information on how to do this, please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab on FAQ page HERE .

Information you can find on the FAQ page, under the ‘Accommodation’ tab : types of accommodation, room types, the booking process, getting to and from your accommodation, and cancellation terms.

How much will the accommodation cost?

We book accommodation with third-party providers on your behalf and each property sets their own rates. Rates vary considerably depending on the accommodation standard, facilities, location, and local demand. We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

As a guide, you can expect to pay the following prices,  per person per night :

NOTE: Prices quoted are for guidance only and may be higher on some occasions, especially for last-minute bookings and when demand is high (E.g. peak season, weekends, holidays, special events etc)

Breakfast will be included unless otherwise noted. The type of breakfast provided will vary from place to place so you may receive either a full cooked breakfast, a continental style breakfast (E.g., toast, fruit, cereal), or a packed breakfast bag or tray (E.g., porridge pot, fruit, granola bar).

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

Our York & the Lake District tour from London begins by departing London and travelling north to the city of Cambridge , home to one of the world’s best universities with an alumni that includes Stephen Hawking, Charles Darwin, CS Lewis and Sir Isaac Newton. Whilst here there will be time to visit King’s College Chapel; Cambridge’s most iconic building, explore the many other historic college buildings and partake in a local tradition; punting. ‘Punts’ are shallow boats that negotiate the city’s canals and and are the best way to really absorb the beauty and tradition of Cambridge. After lunch we’ll continue north again towards the historic city of Lincoln . The main landmark of Lincoln is its imposing medieval Cathedral which sits atop a hill and is visible for many miles around. It is one of the great cathedrals of Britain, and was actually the tallest building in the world for several hundred years. This city’s Roman quarter is fascinating, and opposite the cathedral is Lincoln Castle, which was constructed by the Normans and is home to one of the only surviving copies of the world’s oldest constitution; the Magna Carta. Next we will make our way to  York , where we will spend the first night of our tour.

NIGHT ONE: York

Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes

This morning we leave York but it won’t be long before we’re travelling into the beautiful green countryside of the Yorkshire Dales. We’ll pass through the valleys, known locally as ‘Dales’ and meander along the country lanes as we make our way to our first stop: Aysgarth Falls …

This morning we leave York but it won’t be long before we’re travelling into the beautiful green countryside of the Yorkshire Dales. We’ll pass through the valleys, known locally as ‘Dales’ and meander along the country lanes as we make our way to our first stop: Aysgarth Falls ; a beautiful triple-flight waterfall that featured in the film  Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves . Take a walk along the river and embrace the power of the water here. Next, look closely for Red Squirrels as we travel to the quaint town of  Askrigg , a charming example of a Yorkshire village set in the picturesque Wensleydale area. Stroll around this traditional place; recognisable as the fictional village of Darrowby from the TV series  All Creatures Great & Small , based on the books of James Herriott. Now it’s time to start our Lake District adventure, and we’ll begin at  Sizergh Castle ; a stately home at the gateway of Lake District National Park. The house dates back to the fourteenth century and whilst here, there will be time to explore the property & grounds and have some lunch. Next we’ll travel to  Hill Top ,  the former home of Beatrix Potter, author of  T he Tale of Peter Rabbit . Beatrix Potter loved animals and was inspired by the unspoilt landscape of the Lake District where she lived for much of her life. By late-afternoon we’ll travel to Windermere; our base in the Lake District where we will spend the next two-nights of our tour.

NIGHT TWO: Windermere

Today our journey take us around some of the highlights of the Lake District. We’ll begin seeing by an iconic destination; Dove Cottage , former home of the Lakes most famous son: William Wordsworth. One of England’s greatest poets, Wordsworth was one of the founders of the Romantic Age, and we’ll pass the house where he wrote many of his most famous works and visit the adjacent village of Grasmere, famous for its gingerbread. Next, enjoy a leisurely drive along the Honister Pass , one of England’s most scenic roads and absorb the stirring landscape views. For lunch we’ll stop in Keswick , a pleasant market town where we can relax by the lake, or wander through the town centre. Close by is our next stop, the dramatic Castlerigg Stone Circle ; one of England’s most atmospheric neolithic sites and thought to be at least 4,000 years old. Few other stone circles are set amongst such a beautiful backdrop, and here we can get up close to the circle, and even touch the stones. This afternoon we will loop around Ullswater Lake, regarded by many as the most beautiful of all Lakes, and the place which inspired Wordsworth’s iconic poem Daffodils . Now it’s time to travel back towards Windermere, where we’ll have the rest of the afternoon free. Enjoy time to relax by the water and/or perhaps take a boat trip on Windermere itself; England’s largest lake.

NIGHT THREE: Windermere

This morning it’s time to depart the Lake District and continue our Yorkshire adventure by travelling back to York . Upon our return the afternoon will be free to explore this city, which is truly one of the greatest in Britain with its fascinating history. Occupied by the Romans…

This morning it’s time to depart the Lake District and continue our Yorkshire adventure by travelling back to York . Upon our return the afternoon will be free to explore this city, which is truly one of the greatest in Britain with its fascinating history. Occupied by the Romans, Vikings and Saxons, the story of York is extremely complex, and it’s said that York is the most haunted city in England. There’s so much to do here including: visiting the majestic York Minster, exploring the renowned National Railway Museum, taking a walk atop the ancient city wall, wandering through the historic central streets known as ‘The Shambles’, visiting the home of York’s most infamous resident; Guy Fawkes, trying a traditional Yorkshire pudding or joining one of the many fantastic ghost tours. Information will be provided to help explore the city, including a self-guided walking tour with maps. You’ll have the afternoon free to explore York  and take in as much of the history as possible.

NIGHT FOUR: York

Hardwick Hall & Stratford-upon-Avon

The final day of our tour begins by departing York and beginning the journey south. Our first stop will take us to visit one of Britain’s great Elizabethan houses; Hardwick Hall . This stunning country estate was created in the 1590’s by Bess of Hardwick; a local lady who through progressive marriages and business acumen had risen to become the second wealthiest female in Britain after Queen Elizabeth I. Hardwick Hall was a statement of Bess’ affluence and power, which is reflected in the size and architecture of this house; often regarded as ‘one of Britain’s Best Buildings’. Whilst at Hardwick Hall we’ll have time to fully explore this incredible house and its beautiful gardens. This afternoon, we continue southbound as we travel to Stratford-upon-Avon; the final stop of our tour. The historic town of Stratford is the home of the world’s most famous playwright, William Shakespeare. This is where Shakespeare was born and where he lived before becoming famous for works such as Romeo & Juliet and Macbeth. We’ll have ample time to explore the town. Visit Shakespeare’s former home and birthplace, see the school where he studied, take in Trinity Church; the place where he married Anne Hathaway and was laid to rest, and also wander the town’s charming streets. Then it will be time to make our way back to London where our York & the Lake District tour concludes.

The York & the Lake District tour returns to the  Holiday Inn Hotel  by approximately 18.00.

A Lake District Itinerary – what to see and do in one day

By: Author Tracy Collins

Posted on Last updated: March 7, 2024

The Lake District  is one of the United Kingdom’s most popular destinations attracting over 24 million annual day visitors. Declared a  UNESCO World Heritage Site  in 2017 the  Lake District National Park  covers an area of 2362 square kilometres and is England’s largest national park.

With stunning lakes, tarns, woodland and mountains the Lake District is one of the most beautiful areas to visit in England.

If you are planning a  trip to the Lake District  there are lots of things to consider so you may be wondering where to begin. You may be asking yourself questions such as:

  • When is the best time to visit the Lake District?
  • How many days should I plan to stay in the Lake District.?
  • Which Lake District towns should I visit?
  • What are the best things to do in the Lake District?
  • Where is the best place to stay in the Lake District?
  • What are the best tours to take in the Lake District?
  • What can I see in the Lake District in one day?
  • What restaurants and pubs should I add into my plans and finally what is the best Lake District itinerary to ensure I make the most of my visit?

These questions and more will be answered in this comprehensive  guide to visiting the Lake District National Park .   This article details not only a suggested  one day Lake District itinerary  but also other ideas for those of you who wish to spend more than 1 day in the Lake District. For example you could extent this itinerary for a weekend in the Lake District or even longer.

Find out the  best things to do in Lake District  and also the main attractions around each of the lakes in the area.   I have also included practical tips and advice to ensure you make the most of your visit to the Lake District.

If you enjoy reading you may also enjoy my recommended books to read before you visit the Lake District – these books will help not only with your planning (and includes some great walking guides) but also to find out more about the history and culture of the area.

ENGALND TRAVEL LAKE DISTRICT ITINERARY

  • Map showing the locations of main 'Lakes' and tarns in the Lake District

Lake District Mountains, Fells and Moors

  • Lake District's literary and art connections

1. Take a cruise on Lake Windermere

2. coniston water, log cabins and lodges, 3. hill top, 4. castlerigg stone circle, 5. grasmere and dove cottage, 6. ullswater, 7. derwent water and keswick, 8. take a hike, 9. have a traditional cumbrian afternoon tea, 10. have a drink at a lake district pub or inn, 11. bonus – stay in a log cabin or lodge (with a hot tub), where to stay in the lake district, how to get to (and around) the lake district, what to see and do in the lake district – an overview.

Although you may expect to find lots of lakes in the Lake District there is actually only one out of the sixteen which is  officially a lake  by name.

Bassenthwaite Lake is the only lake in Lake District as all the others including  Windermere  (which is actually the largest natural lake in England) are classed as ‘waters’ or ‘meres’ –  Grasmere, Ullswater, Derwent, Coniston, Buttermere, Thirlmere, Haweswater, Ennerdale Water, Crummock Water, Wastwater, Loweswater, Rydal Water, Elterwater and Esthwaite.

As well as the 16 lakes there are also a number of  tarns  too including Blea Tarn, Overwater Tarn, and Little Langdale Tarn.  Tarns are small mountain pools  or lakes and as you may discover some of the tarns are actually quite large!

Which of the lakes should you add to your itinerary?

First of all decide if wish to take a  steamer or ferry  across one of the lakes during your visit to the Lake District.

If you decide this is something you want to do you will need to add one of the following four lakes into your Lake District Itinerary as these are the only lakes to allow private powered craft and a public boat service – Windermere, Coniston Water, Ullswater or Derwent Water.

The steamer and boat routes offer multiple stops too so you have the option of exploring the surrounding areas.

Map showing the locations of main ‘Lakes’ and tarns in the Lake District

Home to 10 of England’s highest mountains the Lake District is the most mountainous region in the country. At 978 metres high Scafell Peak is the highest.

With over 200 fell* tops the Lake District is an ideal destination for walkers and hikers. If you are interested in walking in the Lake District take a look at Short walks in the Lake District or 50 Walks in the Lake District . Arthur Wainwright also wrote many pictorial walking guides which are extremely popular.

Also don’t miss my guide to 11 scenic walks and hikes – there are lots of ideas to add to your Lake District itinerary!

(*The term ‘fell’ is used to describe a mountain range and is often used to describe these landscapes in northern England and Scotland.)

Lake District’s literary and art connections

I wandered lonely as a cloud  That floats on high o’er vales and hills  When all at once I saw a crowd,  A host, of golden daffodils Wordsworth

As anyone who has ever studied those words at school will know the Lake District has been an inspiration to many writers and artists over the centuries.

William Wordsworth’s poem (and guide to the area) written in the 18th century sparked the first tourism to the area. Other ‘Lake poets’ included Samuel Coleridge and Robert Southey who lived and worked in the Lake District in the early 19th century.

Wordsworth is not the only literary figure associated with the area with iconic children’s literary figures Beatrix Potter (Peter Rabbit) and Arthur Ransome (Swallows and Amazons) also drawing inspiration from the beautiful Lake District.

Artists such as JMW Turner and John Constable flocked to the Lakes in the late 18th century. Many artists have continued to paint the stunning northern landscapes including LS Lowry and Sheila Fell.

Best things to do in the Lake District

THINGS TO DO IN THE LAKE DISRICT

Here are my top 10 things to do and see during a Lake District trip

  • Coniston Water
  • Castlerigg Stone Circle
  • Grasmere and Dove Cottage
  • Derwentwater and Keswick
  • Have a traditional Cumbrian afternoon tea
  • Have a drink at a Lake District pub or inn!

I am starting with Lake Windermere because it is the most popular and best-known attraction in the Lake District.

There are lots of things to do in Windermere but due to its popularity it is extremely busy in high season so be prepared if you are visiting in summer.

I would recommend heading to Bowness-on-Windermere as early in the day as possible if you plan to take a boat trip across the lake.

Parking is not easy especially during the summer months. The parking machines take cash (no change is given) and also accept Visa and Mastercard.

You have two boat routes to choose from – Bowness to Lakeside return or Bowness to Ambleside return.

  • Cruise from Bowness to Lakeside Pier on a single ticket (40-minute trip) or return on a non-stop 90 minute cruise.
  • For Bowness to Ambleside choose between a 70 minute non-landing cruise or a 30 minute cruise each way.

Do you like the idea of a private sailing experience on Lake Windermere? Why not charter a skippered yacht for a 2-hour sailing experience, get involved and take control of the yacht or just sit back and enjoy the stunning scenery unfold around you? For more information click here!

Good to know

  • I recommend heading to Bowness-on-Windermere as early in the day as possible if you plan to take a boat trip across the lake. Parking is not easy especially during the summer months. The parking machines take cash (no change is given) but do also accept Visa and Mastercard.
  • I also recommend booking tickets in advance especially during the summer as the queues can be long as this is a popular choice of activity for most visitors to the Lake District.

Here are some of my top picks of experiences to book in the Lake District:

  • Hiking Experience: Gorge Walking
  • E scooter: Hire an e-scooter
  • Learn a new skill: Rock climbing in Keswick or Canoe on Derwent Water
  • Adults Only: Breweries and distilleries
  • Nostalgic Experience: Film and TV Locations
  • Nature Experience: Forests and wildlife

Windermere in the Lake District

Coniston Water is one of my favourite places to visit in the Lakes. Overlooked by the Old Man of Coniston the lake is popular for water sports including sailing, kayaking and canoeing.

At 8 kms long and less than 1 km wide this was the site of the devastating crash which killed Donald Campbell during his attempt to break the water speed record in his jet engined hydroplane Bluebird K7 in 1967.

Prior to 2009 it was possible to visit the original Bluebird Café but after major flooding that year left the cafe totally submerged it had to be rebuilt.

Although it for me it slightly lacks the charm and character of the original it is still worth popping in for a cup of tea (or even afternoon tea) and wonderful views of the lake.

There are boat trips across Coniston Water with a stop at the former home of John Ruskin a leading art critic of the Victorian era. The Ruskin museum in the village of Coniston has a collection dedicated to Donald Campbell including the remains of the Bluebird K7.

Recommended tour option

  • Langdale Valley and Coniston Half-Day Tour

This 3 1/2 hour tour departs from Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside and includes Tarn Hows, Coniston Water and the valleys of Great Langdale and Little Langdale.

Coniston Water in the Lake District

Why not book a stay in a log cabin or lodge in the Lake District? There are all sorts of wonderful accommodation choices available to suit families, couples, people travelling with their dogs etc There are even lodges and cabins with hot tubs!

Left to the National Trust by Beatrix Potter after her death Hilltop is one of the most popular attractions in the Lake District.

The farmhouse and gardens are delightful to visit and you enter the world of Peter Rabbit and characters when you step over the threshold. It is easy to see where she drew inspiration for her stories!

Entry to Hill Top is via a timed-ticket system and tickets cannot be booked in advance . It does get extremely busy in the summer and on my first visit we were unable to get tickets to see Hill Top which was very disappointing.

I would recommend visiting early in the day (the house and garden opens at 10 am) Please also note that opening times change over the winter when the house and garden are only open at weekends.

Please check the official Hill Top website for further details.

To avoid disappointment booking a tour is an option especially as they include a guaranteed entry.

My recommended tour options for Beatrix Potter fans include:

  • Beatrix Potter Half-Day Tour from Windermere
  • Half-Day Tour of Beatrix Potter Country and Places
  • Many Lives of Beatrix Potter: Full Day All-Inclusive Tour

Hill Top former home of Beatrix Potter

Skip Stonehenge with its crowds and head for another of England’s stone circles . The Castlerigg Stone Circle consists of 38 stones dating back to the Neolithic period. This makes it amongst the oldest stone circles in England.

Castlerigg Stone Circle

The beautiful Lake District village of Grasmere offers visitors a plethora of attractions and activities.

For lovers of William Wordsworth don’t miss Dove Cottage which was the first family home of William Wordsworth. To learn more about the poet head to the Wordsworth museum which is adjacent to the cottage.

There are lots of cafes and tearooms to choose from and I highly recommend the Dove Cottage Tearooms for a cuppa and slice of cake.

When in Grasmere don’t miss the famous Grasmere gingerbread shop . The shop is tiny, the queues are long but believe me the gingerbread is second to none!

My recommended tour options for William Wordsworth fans include:

  • William Wordsworth & Dove Cottage Half-Day Tour
  • Wordsworth at Dove Cottage, Grasmere & Rydal Mount Tour

Dove Cottage in the Lake District

Arguably the most beautiful of the lakes Ullswater is best seen whilst enjoying a ride on one of its traditional steamers . These boats operate all year and call at various locations around the lake.

It is easy to spend a day at Ullswater hopping on and off the historic steamers. There are lots of great walks to be taken around the lake or take the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Cumbrian cream tea on the terrace of the Inn on the Lake at Glenridding.

  • Ullswater Lake Hop-On Hop-Off Full-Day Cruise

Ullswater in the Lake District

Derwent Water is located south of the Lake District market town of Keswick . At three miles long and one mile wide the area around Derwentwater is extremely beautiful and a very popular destination for walkers.

There are boat tours (the Keswick Launch)  available across Derwentwater and this is the really the best way to see the area. Driving around the area can be tricky especially in summer when the narrow roads are busy and the small car parks bursting at the seams.

Cruises last 50 minutes and start and end at the Keswick jetty though you can purchase a hop on and off ticket which enables you to alight at any of the 8 jetties around the lake and explore more of the area before returning to Keswick.

If you are visiting Keswick the lake is a short stroll from the town. During the months of May to November stop off to watch a play enacted by the resident theatre company – Theatre by the Lake .

If you enjoy slightly quirky attractions I would recommend a visit to the Pencil Museum which is home to the world’s largest colouring pencil. The area has large graphite deposits which led to a booming pencil-making industry. For more information about the manufacture of pencils in the area head to the museum.

Keswick market days are held on Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the year (Note – only on Saturdays in December)

Derwent Water

You really are spoilt for choice in the Lake District if you want to go on a hike, fell walking or even just take a stroll.

The scenery is beautiful wherever you go but suggested walks include

  • The Langdale Valley

This circular route takes around 4 1/2 to 5 hours and is classed as a moderate walk. Start and end tour walk in the Old Dugeon Ghyll Hotel. At the end of your walk reward yourself with a drink at the Ramblers Bar.

  • A circuit of Buttermere

This 4 1/2 mile circuit takes approximately 3 hours and will reward you with some of the best views in the Lake District. Don’t forget your camera to get some stunning images while you stroll!

LEARN MORE – 11 walks and hikes to take in the Lake District

Buttermere in the Lake District

You can’t beat a traditional English afternoon tea and in the Lake District you can enjoy your tea and cake with some spectacular views!

I recommend experiencing afternoon teas in the Lake District at any one of these spots:

  • The Bluebird Cafe, Coniston
  • Croft House Farm Cafe, Buttermere
  • Lakeside Hotel, Windermere
  • Holbeck Ghyll, Windermere
  • Wild Boar, Windermere (for afternoon tea with a twist)

Summer sunset Lake District

If you want to experience an iconic English pub then you are spoilt for choice in the Lake District. With the highest concentration of breweries in the UK there are also a large selection of beers to sample too.

Recommended pubs and inns include

  • The Drunken Duck – Ambleside
  • Old Dungeon Ghyll – Langdale
  • Tweedies – Grasmere
  • The Blacksmith’s Arms – Brougton Mills

Lake District view

I recommend staying centrally when considering Lake District accommodation options. In particular, the area around Lake Windermere is an excellent location to consider for accommodation.

If you are visiting on a day trip an early start is highly recommended so take an early train/bus or stay within a comfortable drive to ensure you don’t waste most of the day stuck on traffic or looking for a parking space.

If you are considering how to get to the Lake District there are a number of different options. If possible consider public transport such as bus/train/boat/bicycle when visiting as the number of cars particularly in the summer months can make certain areas very congested.

After a 25 year break flights have recently (June 2019) resumed to Carlisle Lake District National Airport . Loganair a Scottish based company are operating routes from Dublin, Belfast and London Southend to the Lake District.

By rail

My preferred method of transportation and the most environmentally friendly is to take the train. It is possible to travel by train to Oxenholme Lake District and then change trains for Windermere.

From London the journey takes approximately 3 hours. There is a direct train available between Manchester and Windermere.

I recommend purchasing tickets through the trainline in the UK – they sell tickets for train and bus travel throughout the UK and Europe.

There is a comprehensive network of bus services that covers the Lake District. Download the Lakes by bus guide via this link.

Visiting the Lake District by car would be my least advisable option especially during the busy summer months. Roads are single lane, parking can be a nightmare and it can take far longer than anticipated to get from A to B.

Another option would be to Park and Explore – for £18 you receive a park and explore ticket which offers unlimited travel for up to 5 people travelling in the Stagecoach bus services Central Lakes Dayrider Zone. Click this link for more information about Park and Explore in the Lake District.

Hiker looking over the Lake District

By steamers and boat cruises

For me this is one of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Lake District. Head to Windermere, Ullswater, Coniston or Derwentwater where steamers and boat cruises operate and offer multiple stops.

There are lots of great walks to take around the Lake District to suit all fitness levels, abilities and ages.

Take your bike or hire one when you arrive. There are some great cycle routes in the Lake District. Find more information about cycling in the Lake District here.

Take a tour

Another option is to join a small tour and sit back, relax and enjoy the views while you are driven around the area.

Get Your Guide offer some excellent day tours (or longer) and these are my recommended options:

  • Lake District: Ten Lakes Spectacular Tour from Windermere
  • Ultimate Lake District Tour Visiting 10 Lakes

Grasmere in the Lake District

Lake District One Day Itinerary

These are my Lake District itinerary ideas to make the most of a day in the lakes. One day in the Lake District is not long so make sure you plan ahead.

Depending on your interests you may wish to catch a boat across a lake by steamer, go for a hike following one of the many walking routes available, visit some of the beautiful villages and towns , stop for some refreshments in a traditional English pub or perhaps plan your itinerary to include all of these experiences.

This is my suggested one day itinerary to see the best of the Lake District in a day which begins in Ambleside and ends in Keswick.

When deciding which of the lakes to visit and how to make the most of your trip to the Lake District (especially if you only have one day) I would recommend considering where to stay and ensure that it is a central location. My recommendation would be to stay in or near Ambleside or Bowness which are situated on Windermere.

A foggy Lake Windermere

MORNING  – Windermere

If you are driving to Windermere it is important to get there as early in the day as possible if you plan to take a boat trip across the lake.

As I have mentioned if you are travelling by car you may find that parking is a challenge. The parking machines take cash (no change is given) though do accept Visa and Mastercard.

You have two boat routes to choose from if you depart from Bowness which are Bowness to Lakeside return or Bowness to Ambleside return. I recommend taking both especially if the weather is good.

Cruise from Bowness to Lakeside Pier on a single ticket (40 minute trip) or return on a non-stop 90 minute cruise. For Bowness to Ambleside choose between a 70 minute non-landing cruise or a 30 minute cruise each way.

If you begin in Ambleside you can sail to Bowness and then catch the other boat to Lakeside Pier.

Stop off for lunch in Bowness, Ambleside or Lakeside Pier depending on time.

At the marina in Bowness the “Boathouse Bar and Restaurant” serves homemade food, local beers and great views.

In Ambleside head to the “Priest Hole Restaurant and Tea Rooms” for traditional Cumbrian fare.

AFTERNOON – Coniston Grasmere Derwent Water Keswick

I would recommend planning your afternoon itinerary around the location of your accommodation for the evening. It is entirely possible to spend an entire day at Windermere.

There are lots of options including fell walking from Ambleside, catching the Haverthwaite Steam Railway from Lakeside, visiting the Lakes Aquarium at Lakeside, stroll to Hill Top from Ferry House (a ferry ride from Bowness) and more.

If you are staying in or around Windermere/Ambleside I would recommend an afternoon drive to Coniston Water. If you are staying in Keswick I would head to Derwentwater for the afternoon via Grasmere .

Please note that if you decide to visit Hill Top or any of the popular attractions in the Lake District it is important to plan ahead and book tickets especially during the busy summer months.

If you have time I would try to visit all of these 24 beautiful villages and towns in the Lake District.

If you are considering a longer visit to the Lakes I would recommend these stunning places and exploring the Lake District in three days

Fontaines D.C. announce huge 2024 UK and Ireland headline tour

The dates come ahead of their upcoming album ‘Romance’

Grian Chatten vocalist of Fontaines D.C. performs on the main stage during day two of the TRNSMT Festival at Glasgow Green on July 09, 2022 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Fontaines D.C. have announced details of a huge UK and Ireland tour, set to kick off later this year. Find ticket details below.

  • READ MORE: Fontaines D.C.’s daring comeback single ‘Starburster’ is their most experimental work yet

Announced today (Friday, April 19), the new dates arrive in celebration of the band’s upcoming album, ‘Romance’ .

Grian Chatten and co. shared news of their fourth LP earlier this week, dropping the pummelling new single ‘Starburster’ and confirming that it will be arriving later this August.

Produced by James Ford ( Arctic Monkeys , Foals , Depeche Mode ), the release will mark the follow-up to 2022’s acclaimed ‘ Skinty Fia ‘ and will be shared via XL Recordings. Visit here to pre-order it.

The new tour dates are set to take place across the latter half of 2024, and kick off on November 20 with an opening night at The Halls venue in Wolverhampton. From there, the tour will continue with a gig at Alexandra Palace in London two days later.

Shows in Cardiff, Plymouth, Nottingham and Manchester are lined up for the remainder of the month, and the final three shows will take place during the first week of December.

The December shows include a gig at First Direct Arena in Leeds (3), Glasgow’s OVO Hydro Arena (4), and finally, a stop at the 3Arena in Dublin on December 6.

Support for all dates will come from Sorry , and DIIV will also be joining the Irish band for the gig at Alexandra Palace.

Tickets go on sale next Friday (April 26) at 10am and will be available here . Fans who pre-order the album by 3pm on April 23 will also have access to pre-sale tickets. Check out a full list of new tour dates below.

Grian Chatten of Fontaines DC performs on stage on the second day of TRNSMT Festival at Glasgow Green on July 09, 2022 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Fontaines D.C. upcoming UK and Ireland tour dates are:

NOVEMBER 20 – Wolverhampton – The Halls 22 – London – Alexandra Palace 24 – Cardiff – Utilita Arena 26 – Plymouth – Pavilions 27 – Nottingham – Motorpoint Arena 29 – Manchester – Aviva Studios

DECEMBER 3 – Leeds – First Direct Arena 4 – Glasgow – OVO Hydro 6 – Dublin – 3Arena

The 9-date tour through November and December will follow a summer of extensive festival shows for Fontaines D.C., which includes performances at Glastonbury , Reading & Leeds , Fuji Rock, Pukkelpop Festival, and more.

The announcement of ‘Romance’ also came with the release of lead single, ‘Starburster’ – a song inspired by frontman Grian Chatten suffering a panic attack and accompanied by a sinister and cinematic video directed by Aube Perrie ( Megan Thee Stallion , Harry Styles , The Hives ).

Reviewing the track, NME noted how the band had “taken a perfect left turn” , adding: “Leaning on the Massive Attack trip-hop noir vibes first hinted at on ‘Skinty Fia’’s title track, ‘Starburster’ is a pensive art-rock beast that fuses elements of electronica and hip-hop more akin to their fellow striking countrymen (and recent collaborators ) KNEECAP .

“Bravado meets psychedelia as the frontman says he’s ‘over harder than a turned up challenger’ and ‘the pig on the Chinese calendar’.” it added. “The video, too – a fever dream of blood, animals and a cast of misfits trying to find their way – further supports their referencing of Shygirl and Sega Bodega as key inspirations.”

Speaking about the title of the album, bassist Conor Deegan said: “We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance. Each album gets further away from observing that through the lens of Ireland, as directly as ‘ Dogrel ‘. The second album (‘ A Hero’s Death ‘) is about that detachment, and the third is about Irishness dislocated in the diaspora. Now we look to where and what else there is to be romantic about.”

He added: “This record is about deciding what’s fantasy – the tangible world, or where you go in your mind. What represents reality more? That feels almost spiritual for us.”

Since their third album, ‘Skinty Fia’, Fontaines D.C. have also covered Nick Drake’s ‘Cello Song’ for a compilation album .

In December, the band teamed up with Massive Attack and Young Fathers to announce the release of a limited edition 12” single to support Médecins Sans Frontières in their relief efforts in Gaza. The ‘Ceasefire’ EP will arrive on June 1.
