Parents of Michigan School Shooter Sentenced to 10 to 15 Years in Prison

Jennifer and James Crumbley, whose son killed four people, each faced up to 15 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter convictions.

Jennifer and James Crumbley, who were convicted of involuntary manslaughter for failing to prevent their teenage son from killing four fellow students in the deadliest school shooting in Michigan’s history, were each sentenced on Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison.

Their separate jury trials ended in guilty verdicts in February and March , making them the first parents in the country to be convicted over the deaths caused by their child in a mass shooting.

Involuntary manslaughter charges carry a penalty in Michigan of up to 15 years in prison, and prosecutors asked in sentencing memos filed to the court last week that the Crumbleys each serve at least 10 years. Both have been in jail for more than two years while awaiting trial and will receive credit for time served.

“Parents are not expected to be psychic,” Judge Cheryl Matthews of the Oakland County Circuit Court in Pontiac, Mich., said before issuing the sentence. “But these convictions are not about poor parenting. These convictions confirm repeated acts or lack of acts that could have halted an oncoming runaway train — repeatedly ignoring things that would make a reasonable person feel the hair on the back of her neck stand up.”

Before the hearing, prosecutors said that Ms. Crumbley, 46, was asking to be sentenced to house arrest on her defense lawyer’s property, rather than serving prison time. And Mr. Crumbley, 47, said that he had been wrongly convicted and his sentence should amount to the time he had already served in prison, adding that he felt “absolutely horrible” about what had happened.

On Tuesday, each of them spoke in the hearing before the judge pronounced sentence.

“I stand today not to ask for your forgiveness, as I know it may be beyond reach, but to express my sincerest apologies for the pain that has been caused,” Ms. Crumbley said in court, addressing the relatives of students who were killed.

Mr. Crumbley also apologized. “I cannot express how much I wish that I had known what was going on with him or what was going to happen, because I absolutely would have done a lot of things differently,” he said.

Relatives of some of the victims also spoke during the hearing, describing the overwhelming effects the shooting had on their lives.

“The ripple effects of both James’s and Jennifer’s failures to act have devastated us all,” said Jill Soave, the mother of Justin Shilling, 17, who was killed in the shooting at Oxford High School on Nov. 30, 2021. “This tragedy was completely preventable. If only they had done something, your honor, anything, to shift the course events on Nov. 30, then our four angels would be here today.”

Steve St. Juliana, whose daughter, Hana, 14, was killed, said that the Crumbleys continued to fail to take responsibility for what had happened.

“They chose to stay quiet,” he said. “They chose to ignore the warning signs. And now, as we’ve heard through all of the objections, they continue to choose to blame everyone but themselves.”

The Crumbleys’ son, Ethan, was 15 when he carried out the shooting that killed Justin and Hana, as well as Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and Tate Myre, 16. Seven others were injured. Ethan Crumbley pleaded guilty to 24 charges, including first-degree murder, and was sentenced last year to life in prison without parole . He is still eligible to appeal that decision. His parents may appeal, too.

In the trials of both parents, prosecutors focused in part on their failure to remove their son from school after he made a violent drawing on the morning of the shooting. It included a written plea for help.

They also emphasized Ethan’s access to a handgun that Mr. Crumbley had purchased. And they said that Ms. Crumbley had missed signs that her son was struggling with his mental health, adding that she took him to a gun range just days before the shooting.

Defense lawyers for both parents said they could not have foreseen the unspeakable violence their son would commit.

Ms. Crumbley grew up in Clarkston, a Detroit suburb about 20 minutes from Oxford, her lawyer said during a hearing after the couple’s arrest in 2021 . Before her arrest, she had worked as a marketing director, her lawyer said.

Mr. Crumbley’s job history included work at a handful of small software and technology companies.

The couple once lived in Florida but returned to Michigan several years ago, their lawyers said. They bought their home near downtown Oxford in 2015.

The trials of Jennifer and James Crumbley became a lightning rod for issues of parental responsibility at a time of high-profile gun violence by minors. In recent months, parents in other states have pleaded guilty to charges of reckless conduct or neglect after their children injured or killed others with guns.

But the manslaughter charges against the Crumbleys were unique, and legal experts said their trials could serve as a playbook for other prosecutors who seek to hold parents accountable in the future.

Ekow Yankah, a professor at the University of Michigan Law School, said the effect of the ruling on Tuesday might be felt beyond the state.

“This is going to be precedent, most obviously in Michigan and its home jurisdiction, but prosecutors all over the country will see this as a new and viable form of liability,” Mr. Yankah said. “I think we should not underestimate the precedential power of this case, even as we recognize that the facts were quite extraordinary.”

For Matthew Schneider, a former United States attorney in Michigan, what makes this case so different from many others is that most criminal sentences are related to the actions of a defendant, rather than being “about inactions, and how the inactions of a person result in a criminal sentence.”

The sentencing is “very much about making an example of the defendants,” Mr. Schneider said. “This is a shot across the bow to all parents, to all people who have firearms in their house, to keep them locked up, if they could be in the hands of the wrong people.”

Future of education in Worcester: A look inside the new Doherty High School

the new school tour

WORCESTER ― The first day of school at the new Doherty Memorial High School gets closer by the day. The construction began in 2021, and the school opens this fall for the 2024-25 school year.

On Friday, Mayor Joseph Petty and Superintendent Rachel Monárrez hosted a tour of the new $316 million high school.

More: School project: Roam the halls of Worcester's under-construction Doherty High (by drone)

The new school is 420,000 square feet, designed for an enrollment of 1,670 students.

"We're trying to keep families in the city. We don't want to lose people," Petty said. "We have to compete with surrounding towns' high schools."

New, improved spaces for learning

While it is still in its final phase of construction, the school's interior features a new auditorium and rooms specifically designed for Doherty's Chapter 74 programs, including construction craft labor, robotics, engineering and 3D printing.

"Basically, (students) can go to any of these shops and create whatever it is they need to for class," said Christina Bazelmans, associate principal at the architecture firm Lamoureux Pagano Associates. "They're all interconnected, so you can go in between each of them and create one project using all of these different engineering traits."

The school theater will seat around 800 students, about half the student population.

Along with the theater are rooms like the black box theater, which will be used to teach students about stage lighting.

Bazelmans said the new school gives students 21st-century learning models.

"It provides more technology, more flexibility and more space," Bazelmans said. "They're expanding the engineering and technology program, which brings more opportunities for technical education for students, which is awesome. Worcester Technical has a huge waitlist, which is awesome, but we obviously need to get that type of education to more kids."

Every classroom at Doherty has chilled beam cabinets, which provide cooling using induced airflow without the noise of a typical HVAC system. Each classroom also has "speech reinforcement," a speaker on the ceilings that allows teachers using a microphone to communicate with students.

"This allows teachers to use their normal voice to get students' attention. It pipes their voice through that speaker and everybody in the class can hear it," Bazelmans said.

Petty said the new amenities in the high school allow for more learning opportunities for students.

"I think it'll have a pretty big impact on students," Petty said. "It's a great project. I'm proud, and the superintendent is proud of this building."

Olivia Rodrigo

Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat. Some of Olivia Rodrigo ‘s former High School Musical: The Musical: The Series castmates showed their support for the 21-year-old pop star by coming to see her Guts World Tour show at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night (April 9), after which they all met up backstage to pose for a photo.

Also in attendance were Conan Gray, Rodrigo’s best friend and fellow singer-songwriter, as well as Heartstopper ‘s Joe Locke. Another fan video captured the two dancing together to the headliner’s closing number, “Get Him Back!”

The “Drivers License” singer’s four-night stay at MSG was eventful, with both Noah Kahan and Jewel taking the stage at separate shows for surprise guest duets with Rodrigo. During her first night in New York City, she spotted yet another High School Musical costar in the crowd: Michelle Noh, who played Rodrigo’s character’s mom in the series.

With the final MSG show in the books, Rodrigo has officially wrapped the North American leg of her first-ever arena tour. Later this month, she’ll launch a run of European shows starting in Dublin, after which she’ll return to the U.S. on July 19 for a performance at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Russia set to build new space center in Moscow (PHOTOS)

the new school tour

Russia’s new National Space Center is being constructed on the site of the Khrunichev State Space Research and Production Center in western Moscow.

the new school tour

On June 21, the Moscow City Architecture Committee approved the urban planning solution, according to the official website of the Moscow Mayor’s Office.

the new school tour

The tender to develop the architectural concept, announced in October 2019, was won by the Russian design bureau UNK Project.

According to their concept, the main component of the center will be a triangular tower in the form of a 248m-tall rocket, which will house the headquarters of Roscosmos. The facade of the building will be illuminated to create a moving-up effect. And at the base, lighting fixtures will simulate the flame of a rocket booster.

Adjoining the tower will be a long building with research labs and offices. This building will be traversed by a 545m-long central gallery, along which canteens and consumer services will be located.

In addition, the complex will feature open-air museums in U-shaped courtyards, where pieces of aerospace equipment will be suspended in the air via cables between the buildings.

About 1 in 4 U.S. teachers say their school went into 'gun-related lockdown' last school year

Police respond at West Lafayette High School in Lafayette, Ind.

About 1 in 4 U.S. teachers said their school went into a “gun-related lockdown” during the 2022-23 school year, according to new findings from the Pew Research Center .

The Pew Research Center surveyed about 2,500 teachers who are nationally representative of U.S. K-12 public school teachers on many different topics, including lockdowns prompted by guns, Associate Director Juliana Horowitz told NBC News.

"We do know from the conversations that we had leading up to developing the survey that in speaking about the challenges and concerns that they have in their day-to-day job as a teacher, this topic about being concerned about the possibility of a school shooting came up fairly frequently," Horowitz said. "And so that's one of the reasons that we thought it'd be important to put this topic on the survey to get a nationally representative read on how teachers are feeling on this."

The teachers told the research center they experienced lockdowns “because of a gun or suspicion of a gun at their school,” with around 15% saying it happened once during the year and 8% saying it happened more than once.

“High school teachers are most likely to report experiencing these lockdowns: 34% say their school went on at least one gun-related lockdown in the last school year,” according to the research center. “This compares with 22% of middle school teachers and 16% of elementary school teachers.”

In 2023, 15 people were killed and nine were injured by gunfire in eight school shootings, while in 2022, 29 people were killed and 29 were injured by gunfire in seven school shootings, according to NBC News’ school shooting tracker .

Urban school teachers (31%) were more likely to say their school had a lockdown that was gun-related than teachers at rural schools (20%) and suburban schools (19%), according to Pew.

Horowitz said while there are some differences across teachers who work in different types of schools and areas, a majority of teachers across the board say that they have at least some concern that a shooting can happen at their school.

About 59% of K-12 public school teachers said they were “at least somewhat worried” about a shooting happening at their school, with 18% saying they were “extremely or very worried,” the organization said. Around 31% of teachers were “not too worried” about school shootings, and 7% were “not at all worried.”

Almost 40% of teachers surveyed by the Pew Research Center said their school had done a fair or poor job preparing them to deal with a potential active shooter, while 30% said their schools did an excellent or very good job.

Most of the teachers (69%) said that “improving mental health screening and treatment” would be effective in preventing school shootings, while 13% said teachers and administrators carrying guns in school would be effective. Around 49% said having armed security in schools would be a big help, and 33% said the same about metal detectors.

Teachers’ political views came into play when they were asked about what could be done to prevent school shootings, with 69% of Republican-leaning teachers saying that having armed security in school would be helpful, as opposed to 37% of Democratic-leaning teachers. Having metal detectors in schools received support from 43% of Republican-leaning teachers, compared to 27% of Democratic-leaning teachers. Meanwhile, allowing teachers and administrators to carry guns in school received 28% Republican-leaning support and 3% Democratic-leaning support.

Pew conducted similar research among parents with K-12 age children in 2022, where it was determined 32% were "extremely or very worried" about a shooting happening at their child's school, while 37% were "somewhat worried." Similarly to the teachers, 63% of surveyed parents also said "improving mental health screening and treatment" would be very effective at preventing school shootings.

Nhulunbuy dance school bound for the United States for whirlwind tour

A group of a dozen dancers in formation, smiling at the camera.

She lives hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest capital city, but 12-year-old Katy Pelns dreams of performing on Broadway in the city that never sleeps.

"I watch 'Hamilton' a lot and it just looks so cool – with all of like the dancers, the music, the singing," she explains.

"I know all [the songs] off by heart."

For a long time, living in the remote north-east Arnhem Land mining town of Nhulunbuy, 650 kilometres east of Darwin, made Katy's passion to dance feel out of reach.

Two dancers standing in dancers costume in their studio.

But since May last year she's been preparing to embark on a whirlwind tour with 19 other Nhulunbuy locals, performing at Disneyland and Universal Studios, then aboard a cruise to Mexico.

The trip is a first for the Arafura Dance Association, which usually struggles even to make the trek to Darwin for competitions.

A photo showing dance school instructor giving directions to her students during a training session

The dance school's board president Taygan Tucker says since a series of layoffs at the town's major mine were proposed last month, several families have pulled out of the trip.

"We've had families who were very interested and keen to attend but just couldn't commit because they didn't know if they would have jobs here at the end of the year," Ms Tucker said.

A photo of a woman wearing Arafura Dance Association polo shirt smiling at the camera

But the Arafura Dance Association is determined to help level the playing field for its remote dancers and they're doing their best to bring down the cost in any way they can.

From Arnhem Land to Disneyland

The trip was the brainchild of principal dance teacher Geneva Kulper, a 25-year-old Sydneysider who migrated to the red dirt roads of Arnhem Land nearly three years ago.

A close up photo of Geneva in her dance studio.

"Just being remote, some of the opportunities are already so limited."

"I just know this is going to be such a great experience for them and open their eyes up to the wider world a bit more and what other dance opportunities are out there."

The dance school's board embraced the idea with open arms, but Ms Tucker admits that as the bills rolled in they realised it would be a lot harder than they first thought.

"We're looking at over $200,000 just to get these students safely to the US, pay for their airfares, accommodation and also to ensure they're participating in workshops and dances."

Three children performing a move in a dance studio.

While Ms Tucker searches for grants and sponsorships to support the trip, all the students and their families are chipping in each weekend.

They hope car washes, sausage sizzles and bake sales will help them to raise enough money to bring down the costs to allow families to take part.

"It's a lot of hard work, but that's the thing with dance: you've got to put in the hard work to be rewarded," hip-hop dancer Tyce Smith, 13, explains.

A photo of Tyce Smith in his stage uniform which is red black jacket and a gold bow tie smiling at the camera

Opportunities to perform limited in isolated town

Student dance teacher Tarni Petre, 14, believes dance is a vital part of the social fabric for many girls in Nhulunbuy.

"You can go out camping and stuff like that but it's hard to get people to take you out there," she said.

"We sometimes come up to the dance studio on our days off."

And while camping, fishing and motorcross remain popular, for Tyce nothing matches the feeling of being on stage.

"I get a bit shy in front of people – but when I'm up on stage it just gives me a boost," he said.

A photo showing a group of young Arafura Dance Association students practising in a building

The other attraction is that for many of the performers it would mean going overseas for the first time.

"There's a place [at Disneyland] called bippity boppity bouquet and you get to like turn into a princess," Katy says.

Ms Kulper hopes to give the students a taste of her experience growing up in the city.

"Looking back on my childhood, the main thing I think of is dance," she recalls.

"My life wouldn't be anything without dance and I feel that a lot of the kids here feel the same way – so it's really inspiring to be passing that on."

Kingswinford school holds 'superhero day' with special, fun filled visit from health workers

Children at a Kingswinford special school had a day of fun with a visit from emergency service heroes, and even got to sit in their vehicles.

On Thursday, students at The Brier School celebrated their own 'Superhero Day' with a special visit from West Midlands Air Ambulance, British Red Cross and St John Ambulance.

Throughout the day, the pupils learnt important lifesaving skills and how each service can help them when in an emergency.

Their 'favourite part' was being able to board some of the emergency vehicles as it was a 'real-life experience' for them, and a 'great opportunity' for the children to learn how to keep themselves safe.

Bethan Landon, associate head teacher at The Brier School, said: "All of the pupils at The Brier School have had a fantastic opportunity today to gain first hand experience alongside the people who help us within our local community. The highlight of the day was watching the pupils learn and practice their CPR skills and board a real Helicopter Pod. As a school we are very grateful to all of the 'superheroes' in our community who support us, our pupils and our families."
