TRAVEL TIPS FOR CITY BREAKS + NATURE ADVENTURES

5 Best Tijuana Food Tours

If you ever lived in California or the southwestern US, you may think of Tijuana as a place for underage drinking and partying over the border and not a foodie paradise. But things have changed in this Mexican border town which is now a not-so-secret culinary destination.

If you happen to be visiting Los Angeles or San Diego and would like to explore the food scene in Tijuana, the quickest and easiest way is with a food tour. Most tours actually originate on the USA side, making things easy for those who are lodging in the San Diego area.

Head to San Ysidro to meet your guides, cross the border on foot and continue on your tour. You can drive down to San Ysidro but we recommend public transport as parking is busy, expensive and you might be consuming alcohol on your tour.

How to get to the border from San Diego or Los Angeles without a car? Of course you can take Uber or a taxi, but consider taking public transport. You can catch the Amtrak train to San Diego from Los Angeles which follows the coastline. Then hop on the San Diego Trolley (blue line) for a short ride down to San Ysidro. Most tours meet on the USA side of the border to walk across as this is quicker than crossing in a vehicle. Note that you will need your valid passport! After walking across most tours hop in a bus or car to take you into the city for the tour and then return you to the border at the end.

Oh and just a side note, for some reason many gringos say Ti-a-juana. Notice that there is no “A”. It is pronounced Ti-hwana. ? Tia Juana would be your Aunt Jane.

5 Best Tijuana Food Tours: explore the amazing foods across the border

Here are my top picks for food tours in the Tijuana area.

Baja Test Kitchen

This culinary organization runs a few different tours in Tijuana. The most popular and extensive is called Tijuana Bites and is a full day food tour starting at 9:30 am and going until 6:30 pm. You’ll sample tacos galore, street food and fine dining, wine and craft beer.

Don’t have time or the space in your belly for an all day tour? Check out the shorter version titled Taste of Tijuana . This tour is about 3 hours shorter but still packed with fun and flavor.

Craft beer lovers might prefer the Craft Beer & Street Tacos tour, which visits a gastropub and three local breweries plus tons of tacos. Sounds heavenly, doesn’t it?

Club Tengo Hambre

Take a culinary “daycation” with Club Tengo Hambre through the streets of Tijuana. These street food, craft beer and market food tours run on select Saturdays. Groups are small and friendly. In fact, Club Tengo Hambre eschews the term “food tour”, preferring to call their adventures “roving supper clubs”.

Tijuana tours start around 11:30 am and end around 6pm but you are free to continue drinking at the last brewery stop or explore more on your own. The groups meet in San Ysidro on the USA side.

Check out their website for more Baja culinary tours like wine tasting in Valle de Guadalupe and seafood tours in Ensenada. They even have Los Angeles street food tours. I’m originally from LA so I’d be curious to try that one!

5 Best Tijuana Food Tours: explore the amazing foods across the border

Tijuana Walking Tours

Would you prefer a private tour? The above companies offer them as well but Tijuana Walking Tours specializes in custom food tours in the city. These are perfect if you prefer to ask a lot of questions of the guide, would like a custom itinerary or just prefer the privacy of your own personal tour.

Take their Tacos & Beer or Mezcal & Tacos tours to discover these tasty treats and libations. Perfect for couples or a group of foodie friends.

Wild Foodie Tours

Get a taste of Tijuana with the wide selection on offer from Wild Foodie Tours . Try the Ultimate Mexican Seafood Tour and sample ceviche, shrimp cocktail, oysters, grilled sea bass and more.  Or take the Tijuana Street Food Tour to try local street foods including desserts.

Did you know Caesar Salad was invented in Tijuana? Take the Caesar’s Restaurant and Downtown Foodie Tour to try the salad at its birthplace and then take a short walking tour downtown.

Turista Libre

Vegans and vegetarians are sometimes left out of the fun on food tours – especially in places like Mexico where the cuisine can be heavy on the meat. Check with Turista Libre to see if they are offering their special Tijuana Vegan Street Eats tour when you are coming to town.

Other fun Turista Libre tours include the Craft Brewery Hop and other unique activities. Be sure to check out their website for the latest tours that change with the season.

I hope this guide to the best Tijuana food tours helped you plan your Mexican adventures. If you are staying in the San Diego area, be sure to check out our guide to fun things to do in San Diego, plus places to stay, hike and eat!

Tijuana’s ultimate street food tour (VIDEO)

tijuana food tour

Ultimate Mexican street food tour of Tijuana, Mexico (Part 2). This was actually the same day as Part 1, but there were so many tacos, I had to split the video in two. We continued this epic Mexican street food tour with seafood tacos, the original Caesar’s salad, carne asada, and the fastest taco maker in the world! #Tijuana #MexicanFood #streetfood

Thanks to my friend Jeffrey Merrihue ( https://www.instagram.com/jeffrey_mer… ) for arranging this tour. When you’re in Santa Monica, go eat at his restaurant, Heroic Italian ( https://www.instagram.com/heroicitalian/ ) where you’ll find the best sandwich. Also, thanks to Scott Koenig: https://www.instagram.com/agringoinme… for setting this tour up.

Mariscos el Mazateño – Shrimp Enchilado – This place was absolutely amazing – and I knew it was going to be good when we walked in in the middle of the afternoon and it was packed. We had a couple different tacos, including the marlin with octopus, but the winner was the shrimp enchilado, a huge taco stuffed with spiced shrimp and cheese. Caesar’s Hotel – Original Caesar’s salad – Although this doesn’t fit in the Mexican street food theme, there was no way we could visit Tijuana without trying the original Caesar’s salad – where Caesar Cardini invented it. It was awesome, to see the entire process made before you and it was everything it needed to be, no more and no less. Must eat when you’re in Tijuana, Mexico.

Tacos El Vaquero – Carne Asada – This small stall late at night in Tijuana is a winner – their Sonoran style carne asada is out of this world. They grill up steaks of your choice, slice them up, into tortillas, and you have a choice of salsa. Absolutely stunning. Tacos Fitos – Tijuana, Mexico – Finally, this is the tacos tall in Tijuana that we missed in the morning the day before because they had already sold out. But we came back the next morning. Not only are their Tijuana red oil birria tacos the best I’ve ever had, but their taco master is by far the fastest taco maker I’ve ever seen. Unbelievable, you will have dreams about Tacos Fitos. That wraps up this insane ultimate Mexican street food tacos tour of Tijuana, Mexico.

Are you a foodie who’s found yourself on the shores of the Baja Peninsula? Or perhaps you’re planning a day trip from San Diego and are looking for good eats while border-hopping? With so many good restaurants in Tijuana, one of the top things to do in this vibrant Mexican city is EAT.

Whether you’re looking for a tasty brunch with the girls or street meat from a food colectivo, there’s a handful of ultra-elite establishments you simply must try. From famous Tijuana-style tacos to the very first Caesar salad in the world, this list of the best restaurants in Tijuana is full of bold fusion flavors and culinary innovation.

The 8 Best Places to Eat in Tijuana

  • Cafe La Especial
  • Humo Charcutería
  • Caesar’s
  • Mision 19
  • La Cahua Del Yeyo
  • Sal de Maple
  • Norte Brewing Co.
  • Electric Coffee Roasters

Best Tacos in Tijuana: Cafe La Especial

When it comes to sampling Tijuana Mexican food, tacos are probably the first thing that comes to mind. The “best tacos in the city” is a much-debated topic, but when it comes to old-school Tijuana style tacos, you can’t do better than Cafe La Especial. Dating back to 1952, this unassuming little window still does it just like they used to. Steamed and topped with pork rind, pickled carrots, and leek, this vintage recipe has stood the test of time for good reason. All that, and they cost just $1 (USD) a piece!

📍 Where to find it: Av. Revolución 718, Zona Centro, 22000 Tijuana, B.C., Mexico

Best Food Truck in Tijuana: Humo Charcutería

Humo Charcutería Food Truck in Tijuana

When your stomach feels like a bottomless pit and ultra-rich, carnival-style food sounds like a blast, Humo Charcutería is the answer. These hot dogs are anything but ordinary, starting with handmade sausages and piled to the sky with braised meats, queso, and salsas. Don’t worry, you can get your vegetables in too. Each ‘dog comes with half an ear of traditional street corn. Yum!

📍 Where to find it:   Avenida Melchor Ocampo 2024, Pobladoejido Matamoros, Tijuana, B.C., Mexico

Best Ceasar Salad in Tijuana: Caesar’s

Welcome to the home of the original Caesar salad: Ceasar’s. Not only in this fancy-schmancy restaurant the dish’s namesake, but they still serve the best ones around. This brilliant bowl of creamy dressing and crisp romaine is tossed tableside for a little extra fanfare, and the perfect bite. No soggy salad here!

Best Fine Dining Restaurant in Tijuana: Mision 19

Having a little bit of cash to throw around for a special dinner date? Mision 19 is one of the top restaurants in Tijuana when you’re looking for a splurge-worthy meal . Combining fabulous flavor profiles from Mexico, South America, Asia, and Spain, this menu is sure to impress even the most sophisticated palette. In an upscale lounge, you’ll taste delicacies like roasted bone marrow with corn tortillas, bluefin tuna with cactus and mole sauce, or suckling pig in a tomatillo sauce.

📍 Where to find it: Via Corporativo, 2, Misión de San Javier 10643, Zona Urbana Rio Tijuana, 22010 Tijuana, B.C., Mexico

Best Seafood Food in Tijuana: La Cahua Del Yeyo

If you’re looking for an ocean-to-table experience, you can’t go wrong with La Cahua Del Yeyo. This local favorite is the best restaurant in Tijuana for seafood lovers, with daily catches fresh from the sea and dishes full of Mexican flair. Sonoran-style caguamanta ( a.k.a. stingray soup), Tijuana-style octopus, and tacos stuffed full of smoked marlin and tuna fin are among the most popular plates.

📍 Where to find it: C. 8va. Miguel Hidalgo 8761, Zonaeste, 22000 Tijuana, B.C., Mexico

Best Breakfast in Tijuana: Sal de Maple

American-style breakfast at Sal de Maple, Tijuana

Plenty of locals would tell you that the ideal breakfast in Tijuana is a birria taco, but if you want a venue that’s a little more sophisticated for a queen-worthy brunch, head to Sal de Maple. This American-style breakfast restaurant boasts a bright, modern atmosphere and a menu of mimosas. But for all the buttermilk pancakes and eggs benedict, this spot gives everything a Meixcan twist with churro waffles and enchilada-inspired omelets. You can also fully embrace your surroundings and order a big ol’ plate of chilaquiles.

📍 Where to find it: Misión de Mulegé 3019, Zona Urbana Rio Tijuana, 22010 Tijuana, B.C., Mexico

Best Brewpub in Tijuana: Norte Brewing Co.

Feeling unfussy? Grab some casual grub at one of Tijuana’s best microbreweries . In addition to some of the best beers around (specifically Mexican IPAs and pale ales), this brewery serves up big plates of nachos, chicken wings, and burgers. Its location on the 5th floor with floor-to-ceiling windows also offers incredible views of the Tijuana skyline. We call that a win-win-win!

📍 Where to find it: C. Salvador Díaz Mirón 4ta. 8178-Interior 5to Piso, Zona Centro, 22000 Tijuana, B.C., Mexico

Best Coffee Shop in Tijuana: Electric Coffee Roasters

Coffee roasting at Tijuana

Mexico is known for its dark, rich coffee with fruity and chocolatey aromas, so it makes sense that you’d be targeting the city’s best cup of joe when planning your day. Electric Coffee Roasters is the coffee shop of your dreams, with the perfect blend of hyper-trendy hipster vibes and authentic Mexican roasts . They do amazing latte art and have crafted a menu of experimental drinks. Apparently, the Espresso tonic (which is basically a gin and tonic, where the gin has been swapped for espresso) is to die for.

Best Food in Tijuana – FAQs

Are the restaurants in tijuana safe.

Yes, for the most part, eating at TIjauna’s top restaurants is safe. Many of these locations are in highly policed and well-lit tourist zones, which have significantly lower violent crime rates. If you are concerned for your safety, pay attention to advisories regarding certain neighborhoods, limit your visits to daytime hours, and TRUST YOUR GUT. For more information on Tijuana safety, check out our breakdown of the top safety concerns in the city .

On a side note, remember that tap water is NOT safe for drinking in Tijuana, so you should only be ordering bottled, filtered water for the table.

What are Tijuana’s Food Colectivos?

Tijuana’s famous food colectivos are essentially outdoor food courts, packed to lot capacity with popular Tijuana food trucks and trendy communal dining spaces. These colectivos are home to some of the best Mexican food in Tijuana, plus American BBQ, Sushi, coffee, mobile brewpubs, and more.

Should I take a Tijuana street food tour?

If you can find one, absolutely! Guided street food tours are a great way to ensure that you get to eat at all the best spots, including hidden gems that only locals have the inside scoop on. You’ll typically sample smaller plates allowing you to try dishes from more restaurants than you would on a normal day, plus transportation is typically taken care of. That said, the majority of Tijuana street food tours depart from San Diego.

What are Tijuana’s most famous foods?

Tacos, seafood, and Caesar salad are all must-try foods in Tijuana. In terms of origin, the salad is the most original of the dishes, since it got its start right here in Tijuana, but the authentic tacos and ocean-to-table seafood can’t be beat, and are potentially a bigger draw for traveling foodies.

  • indigo32 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Border Tours needs to lift its game. The operator of this tour ( Border Tours ) is totally unorganised and unreliable, they have no shop front or meeting place.... they do not reply to emails and if you ring the number given you get a Spanish speaking recording....they advise to communicate via WhatsApp, however if you don't have this App you are stuffed. As I had no communication after we booked the Tour to confirm the meet up location I sent an email to the tour company the afternoon before requesting this information without a response from them....at some point before I sent the email we were sent information on the name of our tour guide and a phone number to ring him on...each time we rang this number we got a Spanish speaking recording. We got ourselves to the meet up spot that we found on the information section of the tour on Tripadvisor which is the footpath in front of a McDonalds restaurant at the end of the trolly line at the border crossing....there is a tour Company close by un- associated with Border Tours who said that this is an on going problem with clients of this company, confused at what to do or where to go....there were other people waiting and unsure what to do as they also had no communication from the same Border Tours, although they were on a different tour to ours...an hour later these people managed to communicate with their guide via text message who informed them everyone had to get themselves across the border themselves as it was too busy for the guides to come to us. The Taco Tuesday tour is actually a walking tour around Tijuana with three stops through out the day to eat some tacos, first stop is with a street vendor for a breakfast taco...a minced meat laden oily offering, then across the street for a cool drink to wash it all down....a wander through the streets until lunch at a local cafe for a choice of tacos and a juice, the half hour we sat in the cafe is the only time we sat all day...comfortable shoes are essential on this tour. After lunch we were taken to three typical overpriced tourist trap type shops where the vendors tried the hard sell on overpriced items, it was then on to a Tequila tasting bottle shop where again you had a hopeful vendor pressing to make a sale. It was then on to another street vendor for our final taco of the day, after that we retraced our steps and then by local bus to the border where we had to stand in line for an hour to recross the border back into the USA. Our Tour Guide for the day was friendly and had a good sense of humour, I cannot recall his name at this time....the three stars are for him, not the tour company. Tijuana is a dusty old place with no redeeming features....it is not some where that I would bother returning to. Read more Written March 27, 2024

Are you on the hunt for a Mexican experience while in San Diego and need help figuring out where to start?

The city of Tijuana is located in Baja California, a state that borders San Diego. It’s the gateway for many Americans embarking on journeys through Mexico.

So let’s talk about the elephant in the room! Is Tijuana safe? As a San Diego local, who goes to Tijuana every couple of weeks, sometimes even by myself, I tell you this: Tijuana is a border town with a high crime rate. You definitely need to be smart about visiting and keep some things in mind, such as:

  • Keep your wits about you, so don’t get drunk or be under the influence
  • Don’t get involved in shady stuff like buying drugs
  • Stay in the more touristy areas of town
  • Take taxis or Uber between places if you don’t know the area well
  • Don’t be flashy with money, jewelry, and your passport – split up your money and credit cards in a few places
  • Read the news about the current situation before you visit
  • Tell people where you are going and how long you will be staying before you go
  • Go with a group, if you feel uncomfortable by yourself

However, visiting Tijuana with a group tour is, in my opinion, a perfectly safe way to see the city and get a taste of Mexico and I highly recommend it. Whenever we have visitors in town, we always plan a day trip to Tijuana and it is always a highlight of our guests’ trip. The city offers visitors who make the short journey from San Diego tasty culinary delights, exciting history, and fabulous street art.

It’s no wonder the trip has become so popular among tourists.

Thinking about taking a day trip tour from San Diego to Tijuana? Follow this list to find the best Tijuana day trips from San Diego. Dozens of tours run every day, so you’re spoiled for choice.
