Time Travel through Vienna

In Vienna city center, go on a virtual journey through the history of Vienna at "Time Travel Vienna".

The location is historical; the ambiance is modern: Go on a journey through the centuries in the vaulted ceilings of St. Michael’s monastery on Habsburgergasse. Your trip begins in a 5D cinema that takes visitors back to the age of Roman Vienna. The program also includes the Black Death in Vienna with plagues of rats (experienced up close!) and the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683.

The Emperor Maximilian I., Franz Joseph and his Sisi as well as Maria Theresia (in the form of animatronic figures) are the stars of the "Habsburg Show", which takes a tongue-in-cheek look back at the history of their family. In the plague pit, you can meet the plague doctor as well as "Dear Augustin" in person. In the "Ballroom", Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss deliver a verbal exchange of blows. Carousels and waltz music provide a festive atmosphere.

Other themes include the two world wars and the signing of the State Treaty on 15 May 1955. It ends with an interactive horse-drawn carriage ride through Vienna. The carriage "flies" and rides over the Imperial Palace, Stadtpark, State Opera to Schönbrunn and the Prater.

The total of eight stops are equipped with state-of-the-art show and effects technology. A "tour" lasts around 50 minutes through the virtual 1,300 m² world of history in Vienna’s underground. The show is in German. Special audio guides provide a simultaneous translation of the tour guides as well as the show and film texts (10 languages to choose from).

Visiting Vienna

The Time Travel tour

Time travel sign

Life is incomplete unless you’ve run up to the roof of Vienna’s cathedral, soared across a ballroom, sheltered from an air raid, or relaxed in a plague pit. Just some of the Time Travel tour experiences.

  • A taste of Viennese history & culture
  • More entertainment than education
  • 5D cinematic fun, VR & animatronics
  • Also great for entertaining the children
  • Book your time travel tour ticket * online
  • Vienna with kids
  • VR experiences

Travel back in time

Time Travel Tour sign

(DeLorean not included)

Not going to lie: I went into this with low expectations. And I came out having rather enjoyed myself. Think of the Time Travel tour as an experience, rather than a tour.

It all takes place in the underground chambers of an ancient monastery (genuinely) right in the centre of Vienna, with around 1300m 2 fitted out with various rooms and tracts containing what we might call edutainment stations.

You walk from one to the next, accompanied by a friendly guide.

Each of the several stops tends to deal with a major event in Viennese history (like WWII) or a theme (like music or painters).

And each involves some kind of immersive technology, whether a simple talk from an animatronic emperor or a full-blown VR and multimedia experience.

Three standout highlights for me:

  • The opening 5D cinema with a film that takes you through (figuratively and literally) key historical moments, such as Roman Vienna, the plague, or the siege of 1683.

Your chair moves, you feel the wind on your face and “enjoy” a particularly impressive sensory surprise (no spoilers) as you scamper up into the roof of Stephansdom cathedral

  • A virtual reality tour through Vienna’s musical history. Find yourself among the dancers in an opulent ballroom, enjoying a drink in a traditional wine tavern, or standing over the shoulder of Mozart at his piano
  • A flying horse and carriage journey above Vienna’s historic buildings, complete with snow, laser effects, and even fireworks

Don’t take it all too seriously and just lean back and enjoy the ride.

Tickets & visitor tips

We got in almost immediately after turning up to buy tickets, but you might want to reserve a time (or book cheaper e-tickets and a time) online during busy months.

(Booking service provided by Tiqets.com*, who I am an affiliate of)

A few tips:

  • The tour guide and tour audio use German, but you get a free headset which gives you exactly the same information and entertainment in English (or a number of other languages)

The audio is timed precisely to match the displays. It worked perfectly on my visit and did not make the experience any less enjoyable.

  • The Time Travel people recently opened up a new location nearby that takes you on a diverting virtual reality boat ride with Empress Elisabeth (bored of court formalities, the empress appears to have taken a second job as a tour guide)
  • Find more suggestions for VR, immersive & interactive experiences in the city here
  • The tour ends in a shop with toys and souvenirs, as well as the chance to get some (fun but cheesy) souvenir photos

After your visit, go north for the Graben pedestrianised street that leads to Stephansdom cathedral to see the real thing. Or go south to reach Michaelerplatz and the start of the Hofburg palace complex .

You’re also close to two of Vienna’s most resonant locations for coffee and cake.

Slip across parallel streets to find Demel (a favoured supplier to Empress Elisabeth) or Hawelka (a traditional second home to Vienna’s artists and intellectuals).

How to get to the tour

Like many sights and activities in Vienna’s city centre, the Time Travel tour is probably already on your walking route around the old town.

Subway: just a short walk from two central stations: Herrengasse (on the U3 line) and Stephansplatz (on the U3 and U1 lines).

Tram/bus: trams don’t come to this part of the town as no tram lines run through the historical heart of the city. The 1A and 2A buses that squeeze their way around the centre both have a stop at Habsburgergasse.

Screen Rant

Kevin spacey docuseries acquired by max, trailer revealed.

Warner Bros. Discovery acquires the Kevin Spacey docuseries, Spacey Unmakes, for a Max premiere with a trailer also revealed for the show.

  • Spacey Unmasked , acquired by Warner Bros. Discovery, will detail Kevin Spacey's rise and fall from fame, featuring interviews with multiple men.
  • The docuseries promises an in-depth look at Spacey's career, starting from childhood to the sexual assault allegations and his ultimate downfall.
  • Spacey Unmasked may be Max's riskiest documentary yet, potentially rivaling the acclaimed The Jinx for its captivating portrayal of controversial events.

A docuseries featuring Kevin Spacey, Spacey Unmasked , has been acquired by Warner Bros. Discovery, and the first trailer has been revealed. The two-part series was first commissioned by Channel 4 in 2022, and it will include interviews with multiple men who, for the first time, speak about their experiences with the actor. These men aren’t connected to the 2023 U.K. trial against the actor, where Spacey was found not guilty on all counts of sexual assault. Spacey Unmasked will chronicle Spacey’s career, starting with his childhood, early Broadway success, and his rise to fame and ending with his fall.

According to Variety , the docuseries has finally been completed and has been acquired by Warner Bros. Discovery. On top of that, the first trailer has been released. Watch the trailer below:

Spacey Unmasked is set to release in the U.K. on May 6 and 7, though U.S. premiere dates have not yet been announced. The trailer is short, but it promises an in-depth look at the acclaimed actor’s before-lauded career and his public fall.

Unmasked Is Max's Riskiest Documentary To Date

While the series of events might not be as dramatic as those regarding The Jinx , Spacey Unmasked has the potential to be just as captivating, if not more so.

Spacey Unmasked may be one of Max’s riskiest documentaries. Chronicling the actor’s career and the allegations held against him will be no easy task. In 2017, Star Trek: Discovery 's Anthony Rapp claimed that Spacey made a sexual advance towards him in 1986, when Rapp was only fourteen-years-old. That was the catalyst for a wave of accusations against the actor. Ultimately, this would lead to fifteen people coming forward with stories of sexual abuse involving Spacey, including eight people who worked on House of Cards .

The new docuseries may rival Max’s acclaimed The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Hurst . The documentary, which first aired in 2015, followed the New York real estate heir, who was convicted for the murder of Susan Berman. The docuseries gained worldwide exposure and fame when Durst was arrested on first-degree murder charges a day before the finale aired. It was thanks to this acclaim that HBO would announce development on The Jinx — Part Two , which premiered in April 2024.

25 Best Documentaries On Max

While the series of events might not be a different kind of dramatic as those regarding The Jinx , Spacey Unmasked has the potential to be just as captivating, if not more so. The docuseries will chronicle the rise and fall of Spacey , someone who used to be one of Hollywood’s most distinguished actors, so it may see a similar reception. However, with it also coming much closer to the events at the crux of its story, it will be interesting to see if audiences ultimately find themselves unready to explore Spacey's life.

The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Hurst is available to stream on Max.
