History and Background

Open for about 150 years, since 1871, Tokyo National Museum, also known colloquially as Tohaku, is Japan’s oldest art museum and holds more than 116,000 artifacts that trace the history of Japan. Of these pieces, 89 are national treasures of Japan, and 650 are items of cultural importance. These artifacts are spread across six buildings within the grounds, with each building to be considered a museum in its own right. Because of its sheer size, this a museum you’ll want to dedicate at least half a day to if you can’t make repeat visits, and prioritize areas you are particularly interested in.

The gardens of the Tokyo National Museum are also extensive and open for visitors in the spring and fall for leaf-peeping and admiring the cherry blossoms. Special points of interest are present in the garden such as the five-storied pagoda, the gravestones of the Arima clan, and the remains of the Jurin-in Azekura Storehouse.

What to See and Do

Being so extensive, the museum provides plenty of insight and inspiration for whatever period of Japanese history you’re interested in, and it covers all regions and epochs of the country including the Kingdom of Okinawa and Ainu of the North. 

The first area to explore is the Honkan Building (or Japanese Gallery), which opened in 1938. The building itself is an important cultural property due to the western architectural style paired with a Japanese tiled roof. The multi-floor building houses Japanese artwork from thousands of years ago to the present day including ceramics, shoji screens, maps, clothing (including samurai armor and kimonos) as well as weapons. It’s an impressive and inspiring collection that will leave you eager for the next building. If you only have time for one of the museum’s buildings, make it this one.

Another must-visit part of the museum is the Tyokan building, known as the Asian Gallery, to the right of the Honkan. Inside, you’ll find art and historical pieces from around Asia, Central Asia, and Egypt including ancient textiles, sculptures, ceramics, and Buddhist statues from the second century onwards.

For special exhibitions, make sure to catch the Heiseikan building, which has four galleries dedicated to temporary exhibitions as well as the Japanese Archaeological Gallery where you can see ancient artifacts including Paleolithic and Neolithic tools and pottery.

Another unmissable part of the museum is The Gallery of Horyuji Treasures with items donated to the Imperial Household from the Horyuji Temple in 1878. This includes 300 valuable objects from the seventh and eighth centuries, including paintings, calligraphy, textiles, lacquerware, and woodwork. There’s also a restaurant on the ground floor of the building.

How to Visit

Tokyo National Museum is open between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily and until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The museum closes on Monday or the following Tuesday if Monday is a national holiday. Entry is 620 yen with special exhibitions priced separately; they take both cash and international credit cards. Last entry to the museum is 30 minutes before closing. You can also book your tickets online in advance.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach the Tokyo National Museum is on the subway; get off at one of two stations within a 10-minute walk: Ueno and Uguisudani Station. The green Yamanote ring line to Ueno Station is the most common and easiest route. The museum is situated in northern Ueno Park and entry is via the main visitor gate. 

Tips for Visiting

• Make sure to set aside some time to explore Ueno Park, a stunning natural space, which features several other museums, statues, and shrines to explore including the following: National Museum of Science and Nature, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, National Museum of Western Art, Kaneiji Temple, Toshugu Shrine, Shinobazu Pond, and a statue of war hero Saigo Takamori.
• If you are visiting in the spring make sure to catch the museum’s cherry blossom viewing event, a popular spot that is often missed by visitors. Running from early March to late April, you’ll be able to enjoy sakura themed exhibitions and enjoy entry to the museum garden to see the blossoms.
• During the spring and fall, the museum opens a traditional Japanese-style garden and teahouse to admire the foliage. It can also be rented out for tea ceremonies and haiku gatherings.
• There are restaurants and cafes right around the museum so there’s no need to plan lunch ahead of time, though Ueno park is a popular picnic spot with benches if you want to eat outside.

Tokyo National Museum

The Tokyo National Museum (��������������, Tōkyō Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan) is the oldest and largest of Japan's top-level national museums, which also include the Kyoto National Museum , the Nara National Museum and the Kyushu National Museum . It was originally established in 1872 at Yushima Seido Shrine and moved to its current location in Ueno Park a few years later.

The Tokyo National Museum features one of the largest and best collections of art and archeological artifacts in Japan, made up of over 100,000 individual items including nearly a hundred national treasures. At any one time, about 4000 different items from the permanent museum collection are on display. In addition, visiting temporary exhibitions are also held regularly. Good English information and audio guides are available.

The large museum complex is home to six separate buildings, each large enough to be considered a museum on its own, which specialize in different types of art and exhibitions. The main Honkan building was opened in 1938 and exhibits a variety of Japanese artwork from ancient times to the 19th century including antique Buddhist statues, painted sliding doors , scrolls, ceramics and maps in addition to cultural items such as masks, costume, armor and weapons among other historical artifacts.

To the left of the Honkan stands the Hyokeikan , the oldest building on the grounds, which was built in 1909 in celebration of the Taisho Emperor 's wedding. The Hyokeikan is a representative example of Western-style architecture during the Meiji Period and is registered as an important cultural property. The building is primarily used for temporary exhibitions and has undergone several renovations over the years to maintain the structure.

To the right of the Honkan stands the Toyokan building, designed in 1968 by Japanese architect Taniguchi Yoshiro. The building features galleries displaying Asian art and artifacts from China, Korea, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, India and Egypt. Behind the Honkan stands the Heiseikan , a fairly recent addition to the museum built to commemorate the then Crown Prince's wedding in 1993. It houses exhibitions on ancient Japanese cultures as well as large scale special exhibitions.

The museum's newest building, the Horyuji Homotsukan or the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures, was built to house a collection of religious objects consisting mostly of small, intricate statues and copper relief images donated by Horyuji Temple in Nara . The building was designed by Taniguchi Yoshio (son of Toyokan architect Taniguchi Yoshiro) whose minimalist style can also be seen in his other projects including the Heisei Chishinkan at the Kyoto National Museum , the Sea Life Aquarium at Tokyo 's Kasai Rinkai Park and the Mimoca Art Museum in Marugame , as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Finally, just outside the museum grounds proper stands the Kuroda Memorial Hall , which was built from donations by Kuroda Seiki, a Japanese artist who is known as the father of modern Western-style painting in Japan. The hall houses a rotating collection of Kuroda's paintings and sketches as well as other artwork that has been donated by his family. In addition to the exhibition halls, the Tokyo National Museum also offers a Japanese-style garden and teahouses (open to the public in spring and autumn) located behind the Honkan, as well as multiple shops and cafes spread out around the grounds.

Prior to the tour, I received a message from City Tour Tokyo asking for our participant names so that they could enter the tuna auction lottery on our behalf. The day prior, Emi, our tour guide, sent me a WhatsApp message to coordinate the next morning's tour. Then morning of the tour, Emi picked the 5 of us up directly from our hotel via a nice taxi van. Once at Toyosu, we were able to view the tuna auction from the lower deck (we won the tuna auction lottery) and received loads of interesting information from Emi and the Toyosu guide (as translated by Emi). My father, being an avid fisherman himself, asked a bunch of questions and had a pretty long info session with the Toyosu guide through Emi. Post the lower deck tour, Emi took us to the restaurant section of Toyosu where we had a delicious lunch at a restaurant recommended by her. We also had a great conversation (again, as translated by Emi) with the restaurant owner. After lunch, Emi took us to a market at Toyosu where she recommended various specialty souvenirs for us to purchase. (Note: As a result of the rain, we skipped Tsukiji altogether.) It houses the world’s largest collection of Japanese art, ranging from woodblock prints to kimonos to samurai swords and Buddhist masks - to cherry-pick just a few from its holdings of over 110,000 objects. Good English information and audio guides are available, making it a traveler-friendly institution to visit.

Spring is a great time to visit, since the museum garden has some lovely cherry blossom views . As a bonus, they typically plan cherry-themed exhibitions to coincide with sakura season. The museum also has outdoor exhibitions, restaurants, and shops, so visitors can take a break from the endless parade of objects on display.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

On this tour you will explore two of Tokyo's finest attractions: Ueno Park and Tokyo National Museum.  Ueno   The first half of this tour will take place in Ueno, one of the key districts in Tokyo's historical shitamachi , or downtown area. Our guide will first take you around the urban areas of the Ueno, including the famous Ameya Yokocho, commonly known as Ameyoko. Ameyoko is a former black market street that is now well-known for its top quality bargains and even better candy. Here you can find genuine design goods at incredibly low prices, as well as some of the best and sweet sweet stores in Tokyo. Famous also for its quality street food, it is also a great place to grab a snack to go.  After Ameyoko, you will then take a short walk to beautiful Ueno Park, Japan's most popular park - and also one of the oldest. The former site of one of Tokyo's most important temples, here you can explore a number of historic temples and shrines, including a 400 year-old five-storied pagoda that sits in the grounds, as well as discover peaceful lakes and grassland areas.  As you walk, our guide will tell us you all about the park's unusual journey from favorite temple of Japan's most powerful shogunate to the number one place for Tokyoites to relax.  Tokyo National Museum The second half of your tour will take place at Tokyo National Museum. Tokyo National Museum is not only Japan's oldest national museum and its largest art museum, it is also the most popular museum, with over 2 million visitors annually. An art museum, it houses over 110,000 artifacts and pieces of art, most from Japan and areas along the Silk Road. Unless specified otherwise, the tour will mostly take place in Tokyo National Museum's Honkan, or main gallery. The Honkan houses Japanese art from pre-history to the nineteenth century and includes cultural highlights such as ukiyo-e, Japanese woodblock prints; historical Buddhist artworks; and famously decorated shoji sliding doors. The Honkan also houses many of Japan's national treasures.  Upon request, our guide may alternatively be able to provide a tour to one of museums other buildings. Other buildings of the Tokyo National Museum include: the Toyokan, or Asian Gallery, which houses artworks from all over Asia, as well as several Ancient Egyptian pieces; the Heiseikan, where most of the museum's temporary exhibitions take place; and Horyuji Homotsukan, which houses nationals treasures from Nara's Horuji temple, one of the foremost temples in early Japanese Buddhism.

Explore the Tokyo National Museum

The Tokyo National Museum's vast collection includes 89 National Treasures. In 2022, it marked 150 years with a special exhibition. Explore everything from ancient artefacts to hi-tech exhibits!

The Japanese art collection in the Honkan building is divided into 24 rooms, arranged on two floors. The ceramics, sculptures, swords and drawings that make up the collection tell the story of Japanese art from 10,000 BC to the late 19th century. 

The visit begins on the second floor, where the exhibits are organized into a number of themes, such as Buddhist art, the tea ceremony, Samurai clothing, Noh theater and Kabuki theater. The exquisite pottery, splendid jewelry, statues of Buddha and other deities, theater masks, armor, ancient drawings, prints and poetry books will take you on a fascinating journey through the uniquely complex Japanese artistic tradition.

In Room 2, known as the National Treasure Gallery, some of the museum’s most precious objects are displayed on a rotating basis.

On the first floor, on the other hand, works are displayed according to type: ceramics, sculptures, lacquered wood, swords (the famous katana ), ethnic and historical materials.

The other rooms are reserved for temporary exhibitions, as well as an exhibition for children.

From here, I suggest you move on to the Heiseikan archeological gallery , for a complete overview of Japan through the centuries. The archeological material is displayed on the first floor, while the second floor is given over to temporary exhibitions.

For example, you can see ceramics dating to 10,000 BC, or the earliest polished stone tools in the world, dating back to the early Stone Age, 30,000 years ago. Also dedicated to Japan is the gallery featuring the treasure of the Buddhist temple Horyu-ji , the oldest wooden building in the world, mostly consisting of statues and calligraphy works.

Once your curiosity on Japan has been satisfied, you can move on to the Toyokan building , featuring ten rooms divided into seven regions, where you can admire some superb, fascinating art and archeology collections from China, Korea, Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East and Pakistan.  On the first floor, there is also a section dedicated to Egyptian Art.

Let me leave you with an interesting fact: among the exhibits that make up the Asian collection, you’ll find Greek sculptures from the first centuries AD, portraying Buddhist or Indian deities. Don’t be too surprised: remember that Greek art spread through the East with the conquests of Alexander the Great, which went as far as India.

Kremlin with assumption cathedral (with / without transfer).

Prior to the beginning of the tour the guide will pick you up at your accommodation and go with you by car/bus or by public transport to visit the Kremlin (that is nowadays the official residence of the President of Russian Federation) and the Assumption Cathedral, where you will see one of the largest Russian collections of icons.

During the tour you will observe Moscow from Borovitsky Hill, the site of the city’s first settlement dating to the 12 th century, and learn all about the world-famous medieval Russian Kremlin. You will also visit the Cathedral Square - a breathtaking architectural ensemble of the 15 th – 17 th centuries. Here, you will visit the shrine of Russian Tzars and Tzarinas from the first royal dynasty, the Ruriks, and see where the coronation of new monarchs took place.

You will walk along the Kremlin walls and towers and also see the bell tower of Ivan the Terrible, the Tsar’s bell that never rang and the Tsar cannon that never shot a cannon ball. And, of course, you will admire the building of The Grand Kremlin Palace that was the Tsars’ Palace in the past and is the government residence at the present.

KREMLIN WITH THREE CATHEDRALS (with/without transfer)

Prior to the beginning of the tour the guide will pick you up at your accommodation and go with you by car/bus or by public transport to visit the Kremlin (that is nowadays the official residence of the President of Russian Federation), the Assumption, Archangel’s and Annunciation Cathedrals.

You will walk along the Kremlin walls and towers and also see the Tsar’s bell and cannon, stunning examples of casting of the 16 th – 18 th centuries. You will also visit the Cathedral Square where the life of Russian grand princes and tsar started and ended. And you will also see where the coronation of new monarchs took place. And, of course, you will admire the building of The Grand Kremlin Palace that was the Tsars’ Palace in the past and is the government residence at the present.

During the tour you will visit the Assumption Cathedral, where you can admire the magnificent iconostasis, the ensemble of monumental paintings and one of the largest Russian collections of icons.

You will also admire the Annunciation Cathedral that had been the Moscow Great Princes’ and Tsars’ home church for more than one and a half century. It was a part of the Great Princes’ palace connected with its ceremonial and living quarters by a stair-passage. The cathedral was set for royal family ceremonies. The home church was also a traditional storage of the Great Princes’ and Tsars’ treasury.

And the third cathedral you will visit will be the Archangel’s Cathedral. The cathedral is the one with the relics of St. Prince Michael Chernigovcky who was murdered during the Golden Horde times.

KREMLIN WITH ASSUMPTION CATHEDRAL AND AMORY CHAMBER (with/without transfer)

You will stroll along the Kremlin walls and see the Cathedral Square and other landmarks. On the territory of the Kremlin you will also see the Assumption Cathedral and the Armory Chamber.

The Assumption cathedral is famous for its magnificent ensemble of monumental paintings and one of the largest Russian collections of icons.

As for the Armory Chamber – it is a world-famous treasure-house that occupies a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex. The museum houses precious items that have been preserved for centuries in the tsars’ treasury and the Patriarch’s vestry. It comprises an outstanding collection of masterpieces of jewelry of the 18 th -20 th centuries, rare precious stones, gold and platinum nuggets of great historic, artistic and scientific importance as well as of vast material value. It is one of the few treasuries in the world that house unique crown jewels.

EXCURSION TO THE STATE TRETYAKOV GALLERY (with/without transfer)

The Gallery’s collection is a vast scope of Russian art, from the 12 th century icons to avangard of the beginning of the 20 th century.

The Gallery collection was started by Pavel Tretyakov, the owner of a successful textile company, and became famous from the minute it was opened to the public in 1870. After Tretyakov’s death the gallery’s collection grew rapidly, especially after the October Revolution when museum collections were privatized: art was bought, donated or “transferred” from other museums, private collections, cathedrals and monasteries. The latest part of the collection, dating from 1950—1990, opened in 2000. Our tour will give you an enlightening insight into the masterpieces that adorn this gallery.

THE PUSHKIN MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS (with/without transfer)

It has one of the most representative collections of foreign art dating from ancient times to modern days and can be considered a true heritage of world art.

This museum was founded in 1898, in the time of the Emperor Nikolas II rule, and later named in honour of Alexander Pushkin. At present the collection of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts comprises more than 500.000 works of art—paintings and sculptures, graphic, decorative, archaeological and numismatic items.

KOLOMENSKOE—OPEN AIR MUSEUM (with/without transfer)

It is a unique place of archaeological excavation. It is also called “a museum of wooden architecture in the open air”.

During the tour you will see The Ascention Church that is a pearl of Russian tent-shaped architecture and a wooden palace model with 2000 windows and 300 rooms which can be called “the 8 th miracle of the world”.

NEW MAIDENS CONVENT (with/without transfer)

It is located in the south-west of Moscow, at the bend of the River Moscow. The New Maidens Convent is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It ranks amongst the oldest and the most beautiful convents of Russia.

The New Maidens Convent ensemble is an outstanding monument of architecture of the 16 th -17 th centuries. The most attractive construction of this ensemble is the Smolensky Cathedral. It was built at the same time when the convent was constructed.

The Convent was founded by the Tsar Vasiliy III in 1524 in honor of return of the lands of Smolensk to Russia. Strategic location to the southeast of Moscow has also defined the Convent as a fortress. The museum of the Convent has a big collection of Russian icons, jewelry, embroidery and books.

During the tour you will also visit the famous Novodevichy Cemetry, located alongside the convent, where many famous Russian cultural, military and political figures are buried – most recently, the first President of Russia, Boris Yeltsin and the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich.

MOSCOW METRO AND OLD MOSCOW

Prior to the beginning of the tour the guide will pick you up at your accommodation and accompany you on your visit of the first line of the Moscow metro. It was opened in 1935 and connected 13 stations. Nowadays, Moscow metro has about 150 stations and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful undergrounds in the world. You will be stopping and getting off at its most beautiful stations.

You will also visit the old part of Moscow. As part of the tour you will take a walk down the Old Arbat, a picturesque pedestrian street where you can stop to watch one of the many street entertainers and buy souvenirs. In the 18 th century, the Arbat came to be regarded by the Russian nobility as the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. Nowadays, the Old Arbat is one of Moscow’s most popular tourist areas and home to an eclectic range of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.

THE GULAG MUSEUM (with/without transfer)

Located just off the Red Square and within a triangle of ex-KGB headquarters and infamous Moscow’s offices of Criminal Investigations the museum of GULAG offers a fascinating insight into the grim years of Stalin’s reign so brilliantly reflected in the works of Solzhenitsyn. 600 sq. meters of this substantial building and its adjoined court-yard boast an extensive exposition of paintings sculptures wax-works and videos as well as many original items all related to the repressions of Soviet and East European progressive intelligentsia in the 1930s and 1940s. A one hour guided tour is guaranteed to bring you a rather vivid experience of what it was like to be denoted and exiled to GULAG leaving behind families and loved ones. With the 1000-year history, Russia has had a rich portfolio of conflicts, battles, wars. On this Soviet tour, we'll talk about various wars that happened in Russia, focusing on WWII.

Mother Russia has undergone a lot in its long life. Since ancient times, Russian rulers have taken nearly all political power into their own hands. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian oppositional movement was deadly set for the total destruction of the ever-lasting tsarist regime. All of Russia got involved in the bloody revolution of 1917 in an effort to abolish the current state of the government and gain freedom for the ordinary people.

You will learn about the every-day life of the Soviet people during the bloody Second World War with the Nazis, including the legendary Battle for Moscow, the 900-day siege of Leningrad, the hardships that local citizens went through, the consequences of the war and the scars it left on the Soviet people, as well as why the Cold War happened and what was the fundamental reason.

Our mission on the Soviet Russia tour is to find out
