Frequently Asked Questions about Toronto Heli Tours

Where do the tours depart.

Toronto Heli Tours is at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport which is located on an island overlooking Lake Ontario and just minutes from downtown Toronto. Because the airport is on an island, you can choose to take the pedestrian tunnel to the airport or the 90-second ferry ride across Toronto’s inner harbor that departs from the foot of Bathurst Street 15 minutes.

When should we arrive to check in?

Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your confirmed flight time.

How do I get to the airport?

Because the airport is on an island, you can choose to take the pedestrian tunnel to the airport or the 90-second ferry ride across Toronto’s inner harbor that departs from the foot of Bathurst Street 15 minutes. The ferry is $14 roundtrip for vehicles and is free for pedestrians. Look for parking lot P3 to your left once you exit the ferry. If you are a pedestrian, when you exit the ferry you will head towards the Departures area of the terminal which is on the second floor. You will need to proceed downstairs to the main floor.

How much is parking at the airport?

Parking rates on the airport run from $4 per 20 minutes to a maximum of $34 per 24 hours, plus a $14 roundtrip ferry fee. Look for parking lot P3 to your left once you exit the ferry. There is some free parking available on the streets around Bathurst Street, however, it may be difficult to find an empty spot. There is also paid parking. The closest is the Express Park at the Canada Malting plant on the East side of Eiraean Quay (short walk to the ferry). The next closest is at 9 Stadium Road just west of Bathurst street (takes 5 minutes to walk from there to the ferry).

Once at the airport, how do I find Toronto Heli Tours?

From the ground floor (arrivals area) of the terminal building exit to the outside. Proceed straight across the traffic circle in front of you. On the other side of the traffic circle, you will see a building with the name Stolport above the entrance.

What will we see?

You will see everything from the historical to the ultra modern. Old Fort York, Spadina House, Clairmont House, Casa Loma, University of Toronto, Royal Ontario Museum, the Eaton Centre, Old and New City Halls, Maple Leaf Gardens as well as the new home of the Maple Leafs, the Air Canada Centre, the Royal York, the Rogers Centre, and of course the CN Tower.

Can we take pictures?

Yes, helicopter flights offer an ideal platform for both video and still photography. During the boarding process, you will be asked to refrain from taking photos until you are seated in the helicopter. You can bring only one camera on the tour. For safety reasons, they cannot allow attachments like selfie sticks or mounts, camera bags or additional lenses. All camera must have a strap worn around the neck.

How high will we fly?

Toronto Heli Tours fly at 2,000 feet above sea level, providing a great view of the city and its surrounds.

How long are the flights?

Toronto Heli Tours offers a variety of different flightseeing tours. City Tour 1 and the Romantic Jewel flights will get you into the sky for 6 to 8 minutes. Enough time to fill a roll of film with great shots of the downtown core of Toronto. Especially at 110 miles per hour and no traffic! The City Tour 2, the Gold Romantic Flight and The Romantic Interlude flights are between 12 and 14 minutes in the air.

How many people can fly together?

Toronto Heli Tours' helicopter can seat 3 passengers and 1 pilot per flight. There are 2 seats in the back and 1 seat up front with the pilot. Every seat is a window seat and every seat has a great view.

Is there an age limit?

All passengers must be over three (3) years of age. There is no upper age limit.

Is there a weight limit?

The maximum weight per seat is 260lbs and the maximum weight of all three passengers is 600lbs. The easiest way to look at it is that you must be able to put on a standard size seat belt. At the time of booking you will be asked for your weight.

Can I Bring a Bag or Purse With me?

As there is no place to store anything, no loose articles are permitted on board for the flight, only a camera or mobile phone. Lockers are provided for you to store purses or small bags prior to boarding which you can lock up and keep the key with you until you return.

Are Toronto helicopter tours wheelchair accessible?

These tours are not wheelchair accessible.

Do I have to show an I.D. before boarding?

Because these helicopter tours are operated out of an airport in downtown Toronto, every passenger that flies must bring with them a valid photo I.D. This photo I.D. will have to be presented to airport security just prior to boarding. Anyone who is not able to show photo I.D. will not be able to fly but will still be charged the full seat price (it is like a last minute cancellation). Photo I.D. can be in the form of a passport, driver’s license, health card, or student card. Children without a student card will not have to provide I.D. as long as they are with an adult who can vouch for them.

What about the weather?

Toronto Heli Tours require at least 6 statue miles of visibility, a cloud base of at least 2,000 feet and no falling snow. If there are low clouds and/or low visibility and/or high winds they will contact you to reschedule your flight or issue a full refund. Only the chief pilot can cancel flights for these reasons.

These fly over tours bring you up above Toronto in a small plane. The planes range from 4-seater to 8-seater. Like a helicopter, these planes fly at a low altitude, giving you a unique perspective of the city.  I haven’t gone on one of these Toronto plane tours, and so I can’t speak personally to how they compare to a helicopter flight. But it’s worth pointing out that these flights don’t operate out of downtown Toronto.

They operate out of Buttonville Airport, which is in a suburb of Toronto called Markham. This airport is a 30 minute drive from downtown Toronto, or 1 hour and 45 minutes on public transit.

I booked the 7-Minute Helicopter Tour Over Toronto as a surprise date for my partner and I, and it did not disappoint! I booked us in for a summer flight, right around sunset time so that we could see the colourful skies as the sun went down over the city.

We arrived at Billy Bishop Airport about 40 minutes ahead of our flight. We waited for about 15 minutes in a comfortable lobby (free tea and coffee!) before being called up to check in for the flight.

I recommend going early enough that you can spend some time in the lobby. From the lobby windows, you have a beautiful view of Toronto, and you can watch some of the helicopter tours take off and land – before heading out for your own tour!

When it was getting close to our tour time, we were called into a small office to show ID, were weighed, and provided an email for our complimentary photo to be sent to.

After check in, we went to a smaller waiting room, where we watched a quick safety video. And then it was time to go! A flight team brought us out onto the tarmac, took our photo in front of the helicopter, and then helped each of us get into the aircraft.

Once we were buckled in and had our headsets on, it’s was time to take off! This was our first helicopter ride, which made it extra exciting. As the helicopter lifted off the ground, we felt a bit of a rush.

We lifted up into the sky super quickly and in no time, we were zipping over the lake toward the CN Tower.

A 7-minute flight sounds short, but it actually felt very long when we were up there. We flew a big loop around the CN Tower, and were able to see the pod of the tower quite closely.

The views of the cityscape and lake were spectacular, and it was thrilling to see Toronto from this perspective.

This was a perfect, romantic date! The flight crew were all super friendly and made the experience smooth and fun, and the flight itself was an unforgettable experience.

Once we had safely landed back at Billy Bishop airport, we were escorted inside and given our complimentary photo to take home.

Billy Bishop Airport can be accessed by Toronto’s public transit (the TTC), which drops you off just a short walk from the ferry terminal building. You can take the 511 Bathurst streetcar or the 509 Harbourfront.

When you get to the ferry terminal, you can take a free, short ferry ride from the terminal to the airport, or walk to the airport through an 853-foot underground pedestrian tunnel connecting the mainland and terminal in six minutes or less.

Planning to go on a helicopter tour of Toronto? Here are answers to some of the most common questions.

How long are helicopter tours of Toronto?

Helicopter tours of Toronto vary in duration depending on what flight package you choose, and the sights included. Generally, helicopter tours range from around 7 minutes to 30 minutes in length.

With shorter tours, you’ll see key Toronto landmarks, and with longer flights, you’ll get a more comprehensive view of the city and its surrounding landscape. The price for helicopter tours increases depending on the length of your flight.

Do helicopter tours in Toronto run year-round?

Helicopter tours in Toronto typically operate year-round, with availability subject to weather conditions. Tours can sometimes be affected by adverse weather, like heavy rain, fog, or strong winds.

In those cases, most tour operators will reschedule your flight. It’s best to check with specific helicopter tour providers in Toronto for their seasonal schedules and any potential weather-related restrictions before booking your flight.

Are there age restrictions for helicopter tours of Toronto?

For most Toronto helicopter tours, the minimum age is 3 years old. Children under 10 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Specific rules and regulations vary by helicopter tour or charter company, and so it’s best to check in with your tour provider if you’re planning to bring a young child with you on a Toronto helicopter tour.

Are there weight restrictions for helicopter tours of Toronto?

All aircrafts have weight restrictions. Although those restrictions vary according to the specific aircraft, most helicopters have a maximum weight 260 pounds per seat.

Most helicopter tour companies will weigh passengers at flight check-in to ensure that the combined weight of people inside the helicopter is safe.

What are the best places for helicopter tours in Toronto?

The best place in Toronto for a helicopter tour is the Toronto waterfront. Helicopter tours run out of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, which is a regional airport located on the Toronto Islands.

This airport is convenient to get to from downtown Toronto, and your flight from there will deliver incredible views of the cityscape, Lake Ontario, Toronto landmarks, and surrounding region.

What do you see on a Toronto helicopter tour?

On a Toronto helicopter tour, you’ll see the city’s beautiful skyline, have an aerial view of Lake Ontario and the Toronto Islands.

You’ll get to spot iconic Toronto landmarks like the CN Tower, all from a different perspective. From a helicopter, you’ll see the city in a unique and breathtaking way!

What should you bring on a helicopter tour?

Essential items to bring on your helicopter tour include a valid photo ID (or passport) for security purposes, and any required tickets or reservations.

Depending on the weather, it’s recommended to wear comfortable clothing and possibly layers for temperature changes. Just note that typically, loose items (like a sweater, water bottle, or backpack) aren’t permitted on board.

If you bring loose items, you will be provided with a locker to leave them in. Most Toronto helicopter tours will permit you to bring your phone and/or camera with you on the flight.

Is it safe to take a helicopter tour of Toronto?

Yes, helicopter tours of Toronto are safe. Just be sure to choose a reputable operator who has a good safety record, and listen carefully to the safety briefing before your flight.

Reputable operators ensure that the helicopters and other flight equipment are regularly inspected and maintained, and that the pilots are expertly trained and experienced.

As a local Torontonian, flying over the city was super exciting because it gave me a new perspective about a city that I know so well. I think that whether you’re local, or visiting, a Toronto helicopter tour (especially at sunset!) will not disappoint.

Queensland premier Steven Miles questioned over bringing two private jets on crime prevention tour

Live Moment Queensland premier Steven Miles questioned over bringing two private jets on crime prevention tour

Premier Steven Miles and Commissioner Steve Gollschewski

Queensland's premier has faced questions over his use of government-chartered jets, as he announced plans to bolster police numbers and give Cairns a dedicated chopper.

Premier Steven Miles said he believed the use of two private jets to travel across regional Queensland this week to make crime prevention announcements was appropriate.

Mr Miles, Police Minister Mark Ryan and newly minted Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski have travelled to several regional cities a day this week, including Cairns, Townsville and Hervey Bay.

A police helicopter in hangar.

To transport the travelling parties — which also included local MPs — two government-chartered jets were used on multiple days to travel between Brisbane and north Queensland.

Steven Miles said the planes were needed for the busy schedule.

"It was determined that was the most appropriate way to deliver the itinerary," he said.

"It just would not be possible for me to have done that without access to those QG Air planes."

Mr Miles said he used commercial flights for travel when possible.

"That itinerary was based on my desire to make sure that I, the police commissioner, and police minster are in regional Queensland as much as we can possibly be," he said.

Live Moment

Look back at how ABC readers and other Australians responded to this live moment.

How can a Polair helicopter assist police?

  • Police say Polair capabilities can enhance police operations in regional areas
  • Polair helicopters have advanced camera, thermal imaging and night vision capabilities
  • The helicopters are used daily to help police with tracking offenders, surveillance operations and search and rescue missions

That is where we will leave our live coverage. Thank you for joining us.

If crime rates are going down in Cairns why is a police helicopter needed?

Police Minister Mark Ryan says in the financial year to date, which is about nine months, the number of offences against properties in Cairns is down 12 per cent   and the unlawful use of a motor vehicle is down 20 per cent.

He says the new helicopter will be there to complement the work that police do.

"Polair is not just about apprehending offenders, it is about saving lives. "The very first call for service the Townsville helicopter was called to was a little boy lost in the bush. "Police tell me that they may not have found that boy if it was not for the helicopter. "That is why you need Polair."

MP says a police helicopter is a 'game changer' for Cairns

"If you are a crook out there you will now be observed from a very high altitude, you won't even know that the machine is even up there, but it will see you," Barron River MP Craig Crawford says. "It can lock on to the vehicle that you have stolen, it can see your heat signature when you are running through the park in the middle of the night. "You will be caught, you will be found, you will be charged and you will go in front of a magistrate."

Wondering what this is? Join us next time we're live and be part of the discussion.

On Monday, Mr Miles travelled from Brisbane to Cairns to hold a press conference alongside Mr Gollschewski after he was announced as the new police commissioner.

Mr Miles spoke in Cairns again on Tuesday, before he travelled to Townsville then Hervey Bay to make announcements about tackling youth crime with Mr Ryan and Mr Gollschewski.

The trio went from Brisbane to Cairns and Townsville again on Wednesday to spruik a new police helicopter and funding for more police officers.

Deputy Opposition Leader Jarrod Bleijie said the premier was   "wasting valuable resources with two luxury jets flying to the same location".

"The same five locations with his police minister," he said.

"They couldn't fly in the same plane together?"

Official guidelines state government jets should only be used when commercial flights are unavailable or inadequate.

'Aggressive recruitment campaign'

The dedicated police helicopter will be used to combat crime, as the state government announces plans to bolster the force with 900 new officers.

The ambitious recruitment target comes ahead of the looming state election and two days after Steve Gollschewski was appointed as police commissioner.

The commitment includes a boost of 500 sworn officers and 400 unsworn personnel over the next three years.

Despite a competitive labour market, the state government said an "aggressive recruiting campaign" had led to a 200 per cent jump in the number of recruits in the pipeline over the last year.

Nearly 700 aspiring officers are undergoing training and more than 2,000 applicants are in the recruitment process.

"The extra personnel will be allocated to areas across Queensland, ensuring we are future-proofing our police and keeping pace with population growth," Commissioner Gollschewski said.

"Despite the recruiting challenges being experienced in policing jurisdictions across Australia, the QPS is continuing to see a healthy pipeline of police recruit applicants."

New police chopper

With crime shaping up as a key issue in this year's state election, the Queensland government has also committed to purchasing a police helicopter for Cairns.

The aerial asset will include sophisticated thermal imaging cameras and night vision capabilities.

Townsville received a police chopper in January, which is flown daily to track offenders and stolen cars, conduct surveillance operations and search for missing people.

So far, it has taken 110 flights and located 74 persons of interest and 41 stolen vehicles.

"We heard yesterday from the police in Townsville that the helicopter there can allow them to do some tasks that might have once taken weeks in just minutes," Premier Steven Miles said.

Commissioner Gollschewski said he was "delighted" that Cairns would be getting its own chopper.

"We've seen how extraordinarily successful these assets are both in south-east Queensland and in Townsville," he said.

"They are a game changer for our police here and they will be a game changer for the community."

The announcements are the latest in a suite of new government initiatives to combat crime.
