This tour was unforgettable. Met some great people and visited great places. The islands visited were amazing and the nights out were good fun. Angus was a great tour guide who was very helpful aswell as making the trip more fun for all of us. Definitely recommend!!
I had the trip of a lifetime! This was my first time travelling solo and I am beyond grateful to of had Rhi as a Trip Manager. She is extremely well organised and had amazing recommendations that I wouldn’t of found by myself and made the trip even more fun! Rhi made everyone feel safe and supported and her knowledge and experience made the trip flow seamlessly. Anyone who gets Rhi as a trip manager is lucky and is in the best of hands!

Embarking on the "Jungle Hikes & Island Nights" group journey from Bangkok to Singapore was an adventure of a lifetime, magnificently organized and flawlessly executed. From start to finish, the expedition was a resounding success, thanks to impeccable planning and an itinerary that promised—and delivered—an extraordinary experience. The locations we explored were nothing short of spectacular, offering us a diverse palette of experiences that ranged from the serenity of lush jungles to the vibrant nightlife on picturesque islands. The balance between exhilarating hikes and lively parties was just right, ensuring that every day was filled with new adventures and opportunities to create lasting memories. A significant part of this trip's charm was the fantastic group of fellow travelers I had the fortune to journey with. It's rare to find such a harmonious blend of personalities and backgrounds, but we clicked instantly, transforming a group of strangers into lifelong friends. The camaraderie that developed amongst us added a whole new layer of enjoyment to the experience. A special shoutout is deserved for our CEO, Fon, whose expertise, passion, and warm personality made her not just a guide, but a true friend. Her dedication to ensuring that we all had an incredible time was evident in every aspect of the trip. Fon, you are a gem, and your efforts were genuinely appreciated by all of us! However, no adventure is without its lessons. The pace of the tour, while exhilarating, sometimes felt a bit rushed. Extending the itinerary by a day or two could provide a more relaxed pace, allowing for some much-needed rest days amidst the action-packed schedule. For travelers like myself, towering over 185cm, be prepared for a squeeze, especially on the night trains which proved to be quite the challenge. An additional note for future adventurers: consider booking an extra night in Singapore to fully explore the wonders this city has to offer. The tour's conclusion in Singapore feels like just the beginning of another adventure waiting to be discovered. In summary, the "Jungle Hikes & Island Nights" trip from Bangkok to Singapore was an unforgettable journey filled with incredible sights, sounds, and experiences. While there's room for minor adjustments, the overall experience was profoundly impactful, leaving us with memories to cherish for a lifetime. To those seeking adventure, camaraderie, and a touch of magic, this journey comes highly recommended.
This trip gives a well paced overview of central North Thailand. G Adventure organized the trip well and their travel manager Sek was amazing.

This tour was a disappointment and I would not recommend it. Very poor hotels with no hot water, mouldy bathrooms, the rooms/ bathrooms were not clean (one of them was evident that the toilet has not been cleaned). All the transfers were arranged but we almost got lost on our way to the overnight train due to very poor communication from the team leader. We got food poisoning from one of the pack lunches provided and we are still feeling unwell and struggling days after finishing the tour. It seemed that Becca, our tour guide was there to drink, smoke, flirt with the single guys in the group (and she actually pushed one of them to a dark street while drunk) and gossip with the girls. She was unprofessional and her communication skills were close to none - We never knew the plan for the day and what was happening. The day when several people on the group felt unwell, Becca was only concerned about the dinner reservation and we had to "follow the itinerary" and she never checked on how people were- some of them spent a day or two in their rooms as they felt so unwell. It felt we were being pressured to go to expensive restaurants when meals were not included with Becca constantly harrassing us saying that we had to follow the itinerary. It was evident that the meals that were included in the tour were basic (and gave us food poisoning) and when we were paying we were taken to expensive hotels to eat. We were expecting to see Thailand and it's culture but we had a tour guide who had no knowledge about Thailand and seemed overwhlemed about crossing the road and was unable to organise simple tasks. Instead we got on a tour that was about drinking and partying. We won't use Intro travel ever again and we won't recommend it to anyone.
I had the best time, the places we went to were incredible as well as all the activities that were included. Our tour leader, Adam, was amazing. He brought so much energy and knew so much about the places we visited with loads of interesting facts. I would really recommend this trip!

This was my first trip with Tru Travels and first ever group tour in general and I had the best time! Can’t thank Mickey enough for making sure we were all happy, going above and beyond to provide all the information we needed and making sure we had the time of our lives even through the lows. You can tell he really loves his job and is somehow always happy! I loved the combination of doing the north and south of Thailand, there was always a good balance of having lots of activities to do and things to see as well being able to wind down and relax. I’ll never forget my time in Thailand and all the amazing people I got to meet! Would 100% book another tour with Tru Travels.
Taro our tour guide was first class. Made the trip for me and my son can’t praise him high enough. Miss communication with admin and me in emails regarding which hotels we would be staying in on the trip were an issue at the beginning of the tour which I wasnt happy about. The tour itself was great. Once in a life time trip for us

I booked the 15 day Thailand group tour and had one of the best experiences of my life! I specifically chose this tour as it covered a lot of the key places including Chiang Mai and Pai in the North which actually turned out to be my two favourite places! I decided to book with Feel Free after having a half hour call with one of the founders Adam where all my questions about the tour was answered thoroughly and honestly! I personally don’t drink and go out but this tour is great if you do like to drink and party or don’t! I loved that everything was optional and no one was pressured to do anything they didn’t want to do! I’d join most of the group dinners and on the couple nights there were nights out I did my own thing! The tour is jam packed with lots of different activities day to day, can be a lot but definitely worth it! The itinerary is so carefully thought out and I experienced a number of activities I never thought I’d try! My group leader Jamie was also great! She was very attentive to everyone and their needs and how they were feeling. I really appreciated the little things like her being on call if I had any questions when I was out doing my own thing, waking up pretty early to make sure I got picked up to be taken to the extra Muay Thai class I decided to go to, carrying my suitcase at times when she didn’t need to, taking pictures and videos whilst we were enjoying the moment etc. I also liked the balance of having free time to do our own thing, especially when it can be overwhelming at times for some people to constantly be around a group of people. I also met some incredibly amazing and inspiring people on this tour who I’m so grateful to have met! Everyone was super lovely, sweet and caring and will never forget the amazing experiences and memories I made with everyone! The group was mixed with both introverted and extroverted people but everyone got on so well and made a conscious effort to get to know everyone! Overall one of the best experiences ever, thank you Feel Free for the best 15 days of my life!
What a trip of a lifetime and memories I will treasure forever! My tour guides in Thailand were Tia and Charlotte (Tia being the main guide and it was also her first tour and she was a natural!) Instantly I felt so comfortable and looked after. Solo travelling can be quite daunting but I felt so at ease. The accommodation, activities and everything included were amazing and so worth the money. For my Vietnam trip I had Jack and Gabs (Jack being the main tour guide) and their vibes were impeccable. Feel Free do know how to choose their guides!! It was well organised, we were constantly given updates and told everything we needed to know about where we were going and our plans for our next travels. I have made friends for life on these trips and would recommend to anyone who wants to go travelling but doesn’t want to worry about where to go/doing it by themselves. It was a stress free experience and you really do get to see so much in just 29 days. I can confirm I have the travel bug and this has given me the confidence to go solo travelling again in the future :) thank you to all the amazing people and guides who have made this the best trip ever!!!!

Pleasant. Don’t expect any sailing, it’s motorboat catered for tourists who want to relax, suntan and read a book and eat lots of good food. The wind wasn’t always there to be true but even when it was we had a scheduled tour so not many tourists were up for it so captain has to follow itinerary. It’s a bit sad as the boat crew are all very seasoned sailors who just make a nice little cruise for the middle aged. It’s 2 and 1/2 days not 4 as advertised. Main company is Intrepid and they have so many safety rules, makes you feel like a child in a holiday camp. I had a good time but definitely I’d like to try a proper sailing boat next time.
With great sadness I have to write this review in order to protect other naive and tolerant tourists. The organization and handling of the tour was disturbing, abusive and inappropriate. We have just completed 3 indochina tours with 3 different operators. Interpid failed in every category and ruined our holiday. Everything from safety, transportation, meals, hotels, guides and content was a failure. Greed and luck of common sense prevailed. Safety: disregard for our health and wellbeing: obscure public transportation in covid, bird flue times using buses without Hepa filters, dirty and stinking of old urine. Senior citizens forced to drag laguage via high sidewalks, pt holes, busy streets in the middle of the night and spending almost 3 days traveling on buses!! Nothing to see along highways. Your office misleading and lying about the length of travels. Your (5hrs) is in fact (8hrs, 20 min without any obstacles on the road) Booking bus for ungodly hours and making us sit and wait for the room after very long ,tiring trip on dirty, stinking bus and denying us breakfast, not making arrangements to get us breakfast boxes! Guide lying to operator about us having breakfast!. Arjan did not make any arrangements. Nobody new anything when group showed up. We were told that she was just following Interpid arrangements. How horryfing that you would allow yourself to treat us with such disrespectful abusive way. Hotels: cheap, usually china town, dirty and uncomfortable beds, and pillows. Bayview hotel rooms were horrific with 10 cm of dirt around walls, smelling of vomit and old stinge. The only decent hotel was in Singapore. Meals: virtually nonexistent. The horrible meal Interpid bought at filthy food market in Kuala Lumpur was shameful! Cost you may be 20 dol for 12 people?? Majority was afraid to eat and went hungry, others had gastrointestinal problems after eating in this dirty place. You saved money at the expense of our health! Your guides can not speak proper english to provide information. It was useless to have them, we learned nothing from them so we did not know what we were looking at.You failed to provide this basic tour service as well. Arjan was extremely poor guide. Not helpful, not informed, disorganized. Very stressed.Several times provided us with false information causing stress and discomfort. Not aware what we are to expect at next destinations?! Means you not doing your job that I contracted you to do! As a group we were insulted by your arrogance to think that you will use our hands to clean filthy village in Thailand. Its not about green movement and cleaning beach. Thats not a problem. This village is littered with years of garbage. Thats their way of living, they can sit and drink coffee by piles of garbage, it does not bother them but you think that I paid so much money to go and clean for them? In the high heat and humidity 80 plus seniors cleaning fishing village?? only infantile adult could come up with such insult. You ruined our day and caused great physical and emotional discomfort. We paid for all attractions, and meals out of pocket, all you did was a guide sending text with 10 things to see in a current place. I could do without this text. We got more info from the internet on our own. Bad hotels, no meals, primitive transport, horrible guides: what did We pay you for? You ruined our experience, you insulted us and you endangered our health and wellbeing. The group discussed these issues at the end of tour and we all share these concerns. I know couple of my friends have already written to you but you have dishonorably disregarded the problems. We, my husband and I, demand refund of at least 50% of 7190.00 paid as you failed to provide even basic services. We hold TourRadar responsible for this situation as we purchased this tour through them. Barbara and Krzysztof Flis

Excellent tour with two or three wow factor destinations. No spoiler here. Lots of cultural experiences in an area of Thailand which is not known for tourism. Our guide was very good, although a little difficult to understand at times. But somehow we got the gist of it. Vehicle was clean and comfortable and the driver was excellent. Highly recommend this tour, but be prepared for some long distant driving days. That's the norm for doing road trips. Accommodation was good with the highlights being in the mountains one night and on the Mekong River the next.

We were hesitant to say the least about planning a trip halfway around the world with a tour company we did not know. All I can say is that our expectations were exceeded and then some. Every aspect of our trip was planned out for us and taken care of, either before our arrival, or right there on site as our requests were sometimes last minute i.e. a trip to a bank for cash exchanges; a visit to a reputable Tailor for some handmade suits and Kimonos; an afterhours visit to experience China Town; or a Thai massage. All with a personal guide that spoke the language and walked us through every turn. Our experiences at the Floating Market, the Train Market, the Grand Palace, the Pearl Factory, and Phuket Island were FANTASTIC! We were met at the airport by the most wonderful guide(s) and delivered right to our hotel(s) in airconditioned vans. We had exceptional personal guides at each location (Pond at Bangkok, Pim at Chiang Mai, and Ben at Phuket). Every accommodation was excellent with a spectacular breakfast each day. If you can afford the 5 star upgrade I think it would be worthwhile, but definitely not necessary. We will absolutely trust another vacation adventure to TOURRADAR. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
The tour was fantastic! Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and were very attentive to our needs. Every tour guide was on time and all of our connections worked our flawlessly. Danny from Legends was always available to answer questions and ensured a well planned trip. My only suggestion would be for the Legend group to make it clear about the visa process for Cambodia in that travellers should not try to arrange to get it ahead of time and to ensure they have USD to pay for it at the border.

We had an amazing time. We would recommend this tour to others. One recommendation would be to reduce the additional flight from Cambodia to Phuket to 1 flight not 2, to increase the amount of time in Phuket and spend less time in airports.
Every detail was planned and executed perfectly. We had the right amount of free time to explore on our own. The service was extraordinary!!! We stayed in 3 star boutique hotels that were very nice and the staff treated us like we were royalty. The breakfasts were all wonderful with plenty of options.

Jay Jay and Morgan were great tour guides! My husband and I requested private accommodations the first day of the tour (for a separate upgraded cost, of course) and they made those arrangements for us seamlessly. They also had numerous recommendations for food and activities on the days we had free time, which was very helpful. We loved this tour and enjoyed our time immensely!
TERRIBLE SERVICE- if I could give 0 stars I would! I was looking forward to a lovely tour of Thailand as it seems like a rather beautiful country to explore. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, I requested to change the dates of my tour which fell to death ears. I was asked to pay an additional charge to change dates to later this year which is outrageous considering the low cost of living and budget hostels/ hotels booked. All in all save your money and book with another company that appreciates you as a consumer.

We did the 23 day Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand tour. Here are our thoughts and some hopefully helpful information for those considering this trip in the future. We loved Vietnam. Our guide Duc was excellent and the pace was varied with some long days interspersed with shorter days. In this leg, we got to spend time in the cities and villages exploring and did a multitude of different activities. Very good mix of things. Loved Ha Long Bay. Cambodia was fine. It was only 5 days and our guide was ok. Some neat adventures like the bamboo train and bat cave, plus Angkor Wat as the highlight. Thailand was terrible. We spent 4 days out of 6 on the bus for over 6 hours each day just visiting temples. Too many temples and too long on the bus. We would arrive at hotels after 7 pm, told to find dinner but have your bags out by 630 am the next morning. No time to explore the towns or enjoy the hotel amenities. The itinerary was a joke for these times talking about enjoying time at the pool or local markets when we arrived so late. Little to no culture in the Thailand tour. We felt cheated on learning about Thailand, and it was exhausting. We would recommend travel talk do up some FAQs for travellers speaking about visas, (some wasted money on a Cambodian e visa and photo, neither of which was needed) currencies, water consumption, luggage limits well before the trip (were told limits 3 days before when we had already left home). Tell people inclusion fees must be paid in cash so people can plan for this. No credit card option is available. So be prepared to visit the atm regularly. The overall itinerary needs to be updated as prices are not current and some places have been closed since Covid and substitutions were made. Some optional activities were not available. Our actual tour ended 2 days before it should have with the Thailand guide leaving us Friday afternoon and we were on own own the rest of that day, Saturday and Sunday morning. Look for hotels closer to things to do in the cities. Some were more than 30 minutes away from anything and nothing around for restaurants. Overall, we could recommend Vietnam and perhaps Cambodia, but not Thailand.
Should have been called a “Temple Tour” as we visited more temples than anything else. Mostly the hotels were good with the exception of The Wink hotel, which was changed pretty much last minute from the Paragon Saigon Hotel, which was 3 star at best. It was a shame that we didn’t get to spend more time in these hotels - boarding the bus at 7 a.m and reaching the next hotel at 6:45 p.m, still needing to get dinner just for a repeat experience the next day was really not enjoyable. Moreover, during these 12 hour tours, our stops were for temples and one unspectacular lake; very disappointing. The speed boat ride to Cambodia was also disappointing, we were jammed in tight and seating was so low we couldn’t see anything. Then on arrival at Cambodia, we were faced with a very steep ramp to pull our luggage up and NO ONE to help- no porters for us but other tours also disembarking there had porters???

Lots of history and learning about temples. It was a good tour
We saw so much in these 21 days. The hotels were all good. The communication from the office was excellent and when we did have a minor issue it was remedied immediately. We took 5 flights on this tour and all our transfers were punctual and well organized. We cannot fault the organization of Bravo Indochina Tours. Most of the local guides were excellent but there were one or two who did not have a good enough grasp of the English language to do a tour in English. The included meals were excellent, and all activities were organized extremely well. We would highly recommend Bravo Indochina Tours and a big shout out to Ha Nguyen who was always there for us. Thank you for making this a very special trip for us.

The itinerary we received before we departed from Phuket was completely different from the itinerary while on the yacht. We accept that things may have to change due to weather and other imponderables but not a completely different itinerary that had no resemblance to what we expected!
Such a great trip. A very relaxing start with 2 days meandering down the Mekong river on a lovely riverboat. Great way to have time to get to know your fellow travellers. I fell in love with Luang Prabang and really appreciated some free time there to explore on my own. Accommodation was first class (Pakbeng was a bit basic, but there's not much there to choose from so fair enough) and the pace was perfect. Not too rushed and only had to unpack a couple of times.

Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Start and finish an incredible 30 day South East Asia Loop in the exciting epicenter that is Bangkok.

2. Chiang Mai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

We've made sure to stop by Krabi on our incredible 28 day Bangkok to Bali adventure - you'll thank us later.

8. Golden Triangle

The area where the Thai, Laotian, and Burmese borders meet has long been associated with colorful cultures and illicit opium trade. The opium may have gone but the color hasn't and the markets offer all sorts of amazing local handicrafts.

Set your sights on this incredible part of the world on a 3 days Chiang Mai and Golden Triangle.

9. Khao Sok National Park

For a real jungle experience, spend a couple of days in Khao Sok National Park. Thick rainforests, limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and mountains make a wild playground.

Hike, swim, explore caves, and sleep to the sounds of exotic birds and animals during our 8 days Essential Southern Thailand trip.

10. Kanchanaburi

This tranquil town is the jumping-off point for visits to the infamous Hell Fire Pass and River Kwai. Be sure to take a ride along the tracks of the Death Railway and reflect on the atrocities of war at the Jeath War Museum.

Take a reflective walk through the history of Kanchanaburi on a 15 day Beautiful Northern Thailand tour.

Walk through one of Thailand's first capital cities on our 17 day Classic Thailand East Coast adventure.

7. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognizable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQI travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Adaptor plug

In Thailand the standard voltage is 220 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A, B, C, F and O. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Reef-safe sunscreen & insect repellent

Protect yourself from the harsh Thai sun with SPF 30 or higher and protect the coral reefs with reef-safe sunscreen. You’ll also need to pack plenty of DEET insect repellent.

Thailand's local currency is the Thai Baht. The best way to carry your money is in debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currencies from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout Thailand and will generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if at all possible in case of loss or problems with one card, you will have a back up. If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 2003, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

It is customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service.

Tour guides / Drivers

$ 1.5 to $ 3.5.

Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person per day depending on the quality and length of the service

G Adventures CEO

$ 20 to $ 25.

The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline $20-25 USD per person, per week can be used.

Packing for Thailand

What you need to bring depends on the trip you have chosen and the countries or regions you are planning to visit. We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible as your are expected to carry your own luggage. As a rule we try not to have to walk more than 15-20 minutes with your bags which is why we recommend keeping the weight of your bags between 10-15kg/22-30lb. Suitcases are not recommended for G Adventures trips! Most travellers carry a backpack or rolling bag of small to medium size (no XXL ones please!) as they need to fit under the beds when travelling on sleeper trains. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water, cameras and other electronics like iPods and mobile phones. If your trip involves overnights in homestays, villages or camping then you usually have the opportunity to rent sleeping bags if need be instead of bringing them with you.

This socket also works with plug E and plug F. Type F: also known as "Schuko". This socket also works with plug C and plug E. Type O: this type is unique to Thailand but it also works with plug C, plug E and plug F.

They are an invitation to sit back, relax, and soak up the sunshine beneath tropical trees in remote corners of the sea, and here are some of the best islands in Thailand to visit:

  • Koh Yao Islands
  • Koh Phi Phi
  • Koh Similan

From long powdery white shores to small rocky coves, coral reefs to rugged coastlines, the beaches of Thailand are diverse but equally beautiful.

Whether visiting Phuket or cruising around the Andaman Sea, here are some of the best beaches in Thailand:

  • Railay Beach, Krabi
  • Kata Noi, Phuket
  • Nai Harn Beach, Phuket
  • White Sand Beach, Koh Chang
  • Laem Thong Beach, Koh Phi Phi
  • Maya Bay, Koh Phi Phi
  • Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui
  • Haad Rin, Koh Phangan

It is very safe to travel to Thailand. With a reputation for being warm and welcoming, you will feel safe and comfortable during your Thailand trip.

From shorter 7-day tours to longer two-week trips , our collection of featured itineraries showcases the best ways to experience Thailand. Here are some of our favorites, which you can customize when working with our travel specialists to design your unique trip:

  • Our Best of Thailand Tour: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket & Phang Nga offers the most popular route through Thailand, starting in the capital city, taking you north to Chiang Mai, and including several days on the island of Phuket.
  • See the top mainland spots in Thailand, including Bangkok and Chiang Mai, before retreating to the beaches of Krabi with our Enchanted Highlights of Thailand Tour .

Revolving around the best islands in Thailand, our Thailand Thrill & Adventure Island Tour for Families is the perfect itinerary for adventurous families, taking you to Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Koh Chang.

Isan Explorer

Welcome to Isan Explorer

Ban Chiang pottery

Isan Explorer is a family-run tour company based in Northeast Thailand, the most fascinating part of the country. Known as Isan, this vast region – covering one third of the country – is brimming with culture, wildlife, and history; and its myriad sites are just as beautiful, inspiring, and evocative as anything the rest of Thailand has to offer. Yet because only 1% of visitors to Thailand come here, Isan (often spelled Isaan) offers the kind of authentic travel experiences that are increasingly hard to find elsewhere in the country. Just look at our Thailand tours and you’ll understand why we think this is such an interesting and special place.

We fully embrace the idea of slow travel and all of our tours include stops in villages, temples, and markets so you can experience genuine Isan and Thai culture up close. We often add extra stops to our tours that fit with each guest’s particular interests and, as much as possible, we let you set the pace each day. This approach to tours creates more meaningful experiences than is possible with a regular tour company. Please read our About Us page to learn more about how we do things very differently from most other Thailand tour companies.

Because Isan is so off the beaten track, travel here can be a bit of an adventure at times (English is rarely spoken), but we do our best to make it easy and stress-free. And since we are based in Khon Kaen, Thailand and organize everything ourselves, we can offer you private tours at prices lower than many group tours sold by overseas tour companies.

While few tour companies come to Isan, we have made it our mission to help people explore this region – and nobody knows it better than us. The company was founded by Lonely Planet author and Khon Kaen resident Tim Bewer, whose love of the region has sent him to its remotest corners, and his wife Suttawan, who has a master’s degree in Mekong studies. Because we really know the region and the local culture, we can give our guests fully authentic experiences throughout their tour.

The Isan Explorer Difference

  • We Live Here – Nobody can match our knowledge of northeast Thailand. On most of our tours, we take you to places that literally no other tour companies visit.
  • We Embrace Slow Travel – We cover short distances most days to allow in-depth exploration. The less time you spend in a van, the more places and things you can see.
  • We Focus on Cultural Experiences – We think villages and markets are just as interesting as typical tour stops.
  • We Customize our Tours – Whenever possible, we add stops to your tour based on your personal interests.
  • Low Prices – Because we’re a small company doing everything ourselves, we can offer excellent value even while providing above average service. We aren’t the cheapest tour company in Thailand, but we’re far from the most expensive.
