Once you create an account, you'll never have to worry about a lost card again! Simply cancel the lost card online and then transfer the balance to your new card.

If you don’t have the money to purchase a pass up-front or don’t know how often you will ride, fare capping is the best option for you. Simply ride, and the money you spend on fare will go toward earning a day or month pass. Once you spend the amount needed to earn the pass, you'll get to ride for free for the rest of the day or month.

With fare capping, you don't need to guess the amount of trips you'll make in a given period of time. This saves you money on passes you may not need while ensuring you always get a pass if you're riding frequently.

All you have to do is ride. Every time you pay for your fare, your money goes toward a pass.

You'll earn a   day pass   after paying for more than 2 rides in a day. The validity period for the day pass is from 3 AM on the first day until 2:59 AM on the second. For more information, view How to Earn a Day Pass.

You can earn a   month pass   from the first to the end of the month. For example, if an adult rider uses $7.50 of fare on their HOLO Card each day, by the 11th day they will have spent $80 (the cost of an Adult monthly pass). Just tap your card the card reader when boarding TheBus or at a Skyline station fare gate. Don't forget to have a pass or enough stored value on your card to ride!

Oahu’s public transit system, TheBus , goes practically everywhere on the island (take a circle island tour if you have some time on your hands, fare information below). It may not be the quickest way to travel, but it beats negotiating unfamiliar roads in a rental car especially if you’d like to kick back and enjoy the fabulous scenery. Most buses are equipped with bike racks, and most have handicapped access. Note that wet bathing suits are not allowed on board, and luggage must fit on your lap or under your seat.

You don’t NEED a HOLO card to ride the Oahu bus.

But if you plan on taking the bus on Oahu a few times, the HOLO card makes it worth it for the convenience!

I’ve used a HOLO card for the bus many times and here’s what you need to know!

You can pay for the bus in Oahu using a HOLO card, and it makes it easy to travel around Oahu by bus!

In order to use the HOLO card, all you need to do is TAP when you get on the card and that’s it!

You can still ride the bus without a HOLO card.

But without a HOLO card, you will need to make sure that you have exact change when you get on the bus.

So your options for riding the Oahu bus are to pay for the bus fare with the HOLO card or with cash.

The HOLO card doesn’t necessarily save you money.

And in fact the HOLO card will cost you $2 or so for the initial buy.

But it’s worth it for the convenience if you plan on taking the Oahu bus a bunch of times!

You will put money on it ahead of time, and it will charge you when you use the HOLO card.

If you take the bus a lot in one day, then you will never pay more than $7.50 if you use the HOLO card. If you pay by cash, you will need to pay $3 each time.

In this case, the HOLO card will save you money!

You can go to a lot of places by bus on Oahu!

Whether you want to take the bus to go down the road in Waikiki instead of walking 20 minutes (no shame! I totally took the bus to go see the Waikiki fireworks since I was staying on the other end of Waikiki!), or you want to go by bus to venture out further from Waikiki for a day trip around Oahu, the HOLO card makes it easy!

How much does it cost to ride the bus with a HOLO card?

Each Oahu bus ride costs $3.

If you use a HOLO card, you also get free transfers for 2.5 hours. You still do need to swipe your HOLO card every time.

If you use a HOLO card to take the bus, you will also never have to pay more than $7.50 in one day. Basically, if you use a HOLO card, your Oahu bus day pass is $7.50.

Again, you need to swipe your HOLO card every time you ride the bus.

The bus fares will automatically be calculated, so there’s nothing to do on your end except swipe!

How do you get a HOLO card?

You cannot get a HOLO card on the bus. You need to get this before you get on the bus.

But, it’s easy to get a HOLO card in Waikiki!

The easiest way to get a HOLO card is by going to any ABC Store in Waikiki !

If you don’t get a HOLO card before you get on the bus, that’s okay, but you will just need to pay in cash and make sure you have exact change (aka several dollar bills).

How do you add money to a HOLO card?

It’s also easy to add money to a HOLO card! Once you have your HOLO card, you can simply go online to the official HOLO card website and put more money on your card!

Each HOLO card has a unique card number so you’ll use that number to put money onto your individual card.

How do you use the HOLO card on the bus?

It is also easy to use a HOLO card!

When you get on the bus, you will tap your card on the HOLO card machine, and that’s it! You don’t need to do anything else. There is also nothing to do at the end of the bus ride. You don’t need to tap the card at the end or anything like that. You will just get off the bus when your bus stop arrives, and that’s that!

As soon as you get on the bus, you will see the HOLO card machine. You will also see the bus fare box which is where you will insert your dollar bills if you’re paying in cash.

How to take the bus using the HOLO card

• Buy a HOLO card at ABC Store in Waikiki
• Arrive at your nearest bus stop according to google maps
• Get on the bus and immediately tap your HOLO card on the machine! Wait for it to approve your card.
• Go and find a seat on the bus and enjoy the ride!
• Follow along on google maps to know when your bus stop is next, and when it is, pull any yellow cord on the bus!
• Arrive at your bus stop and get off the bus! You might have to TOUCH the door for it to open. (It might not open automatically – look for a TOUCH sign)

So if you are staying in Waikiki, first you will go to an ABC Store in Waikiki.

This won’t be difficult to find.

The closest ABC Store is never too far away because there are SO many ABC Stores in Waikiki! (See more: ABC Store food )

Then you can simply go to the cashier and tell them you want to buy a HOLO card!

When I bought a HOLO card from ABC Store in September 2022, you needed cash in order to buy the HOLO card.

The ABC Store cashier will ask you how much you want to put on it to start. I did the minimum required to start, which was $5: $2 for the card and $3 for one bus ride.

Then, I went online to add more cash to the card.

If you want to load it up when you buy it, then you can consider for example how many days you will be using the Oahu bus, keeping in mind that the most you will pay in one day is $7.50.

So once you have your HOLO card, you are now really ready to take the bus!

Google maps is VERY helpful for figuring out how to get around Oahu by bus !

It will tell you where to go to get on the bus, and when you’re on the bus, you can continue to refer to google maps as it will list the upcoming stops before your bus stop too.

Once the bus arrives, you’ll get on the bus from the front of the bus.

Get your HOLO card ready!

As you get on, look out for the HOLO card machine!

Place your HOLO card on it, and wait for it to approve!

Then, you can go and have a seat!

Once you are on the bus, you can follow along on google maps!

The name of the next bus stop will also be announced, and it will be on display as well.

Once your bus stop is next, then you will pull the yellow cord. This signifies to the bus driver to stop at the next bus stop.

Once the bus has stopped, you don’t need to do anything special in regards to the HOLO card or bus fare before getting off the bus.

The bus door may not automatically open. If it doesn’t, you’ll look for the spot to touch to open the door.

Then, you’ll get off the bus and head to your destination!

And that’s a bit about getting a HOLO card in Waikiki!

To take advantage of the Free Fare Week, riders need to swipe their HOLO Card – a "passport for travel" throughout the state, according to J. Roger Morton, Director of the Department of Transportation Services for the City & County of Honolulu – rather than pay with cash.

Owners of the HOLO card can tap the card when boarding a bus and load monthly passes onto it too. When the highly anticipated Honolulu Rail Project is completed, the card will also be used to ride that service.

HOLO Cards are available for free from now until Aug. 26 at select retailers, TheBus Pass Office and some Satellite City Halls. Typically they cost $2. (In Hawaiian, holo means "to go" or "progress.")

The decision was made by a unanimous vote by the Honolulu City Council to boost interest in the public bus. Pre-pandemic, the bus transported 195,000 people around Oahu a day, and that number dropped to 35,000 during the height of the pandemic, according to Morton. Since then, ridership has steadily increased.

TheBus is using the promotion to introduce the HOLO card and "get it into the hands of as many residents as possible," Morton said. The goal is to have people reconsider their commute patterns.

"TheBus is a great way to save some money," he continued. "It's not for everybody but (works) for some."

Can tourists ride the bus in Oahu and Hawaii for free?

While the promotion is mainly to attract residents to use the system, visitors who "are going to be in town for a while" may find the HOLO card a worthwhile purchase since TheBus serves the entire island. Typically, visitors make up around 9-12% of TheBus ridership, Morton said. 

This is the first time TheBus is offering such a promotion. As for future free fares, Morton said TheBus will "probably do this again."

Is there economic assistance for TheBus?

Morton noted that TheBus also offers a Low Income Transit Pass Program to help those with "extremely low income" get a subsidized HOLO card.

Is there another free transit option in Hawaii?

Oahu will be the second island offering free public bus rides to people. From now until Dec. 31, 2025, those on Hawaii Island can ride its only mass transit option,  Hele-On , for free, thanks to pandemic relief federal funds . Officials said the free transit is meant to help alleviate the increased cost of living. 

"We believe going fare-free has also helped in ensuring equity for everybody and removes a barrier for particularly low-income people needing to access destinations and don't have to worry about paying," John Andoh, Mass Transit Administrator & General Manager of County of Hawai’i Mass Transit Agency. It's also a social service, he said, so it will hopefully help reduce congestion and improve the economy.

Does the bus go to the airport?

The Hele-On bus offers direct service to all airports on Hawaii Island and covers most of the island, which is the largest in the state. From 2005 to 2013, Hele-On ran free to everyone as well.

The Oahu Bus - Best Way to Get Around

The Oahu bus, also known as "TheBus", is a great way to get around the island if you decided not to rent a car.  The Honolulu bus system is actually ranked as one of the best transit systems in the world.  That’s pretty impressive with over 72 million satisfied Honolulu bus riders per year!

The Oahu bus is a reliable transit to travel around the island, and allows riders to get to places in a reasonable amount of time at a very reasonable cost.

You will need to coordinate a little more the farther you travel outside of Waikiki, and allow more time to get to your destinations, but you can let go of your stress and let the bus driver do all the work!

A majority of the Oahu buses on different island routes travel through Waikiki (on Kuhio Ave), Ala Moana Mall , and/or downtown Honolulu -all which are very close to each other.  A quick bus transfer should get you to farther destinations such as Lanikai Beach or the North Shore .

Most Oahu buses arrive at the bus stops every 10 to 30 minutes .  However, some buses only pass by once an hour on Sundays, holidays, and also run less frequently to less-traveled areas of the island .

Buses do, however, run on a regular basis to the most popular Oahu attractions , but it’s always good practice to check the schedule or ask the bus driver.  Equally important is to know when the last bus is scheduled for your route if you plan on staying out late.

All fares are to be paid with exact change in cash upon boarding.  Drivers do not carry cash for change. 

The alternative and more convenient way is to purchase your bus fare ahead of time from HOLO Card  online . What you get is a reloadable smart card that can be used to pay for rides by simply tapping it on the card reader when boarding the bus.  You can purchase and reload it online or at various HOLO retail locations throughout Oahu. 

ADULT FARES:

• Single Fare:   $3.00 - Includes 2.5 hours of unlimited transfers.
• Day Cap:   $7.50 - When this amount has been paid, no additional payments need to be made.
• 7-Day Pass:   $30.00 - Unlimited rides for 7 consecutive days.
• Monthly Pass:   $80.00 - Valid from the 1st day to the last day of the month.
• Monthly Cap:   $80.00 - When this amount is reached, no additional payments are required within a calendar month if no monthly pass was purchased to begin with.
• Annual Pass:  $880.00

Waikiki Trolley  

The Waikiki Trolley  is a hop-on hop-off double deck bus that visits many Honolulu attractions including ones surrounding Diamond Head , Waikiki, Ala Moana , Aloha Stadium and more . There are 4 different routes to explore: Scenic Tour, Historic Tour, Shopping Tour, and the Island Tour.

Tickets start around $31.50 for a Child 1-day All Lines pass and  $57.75 for an Adult 1-day All Lines pass. You can also purchase the multiple-day passes for not much more if you plan on exploring the island in this mode of transportation for more than one day!

From Waikiki, catch the Eastbound #2, 2L or 23  from Kuhio Avenue. The bus will drop you off at the Diamond Head State Monument and Kapiolani Community College (KCC) bus stop .  (If you're unsure when or where to get off, just ask the driver when boarding.)  From there you can follow the signs that will direct you towards the Diamond Head crater entrance and hiking trail just a short walk away.  Consider it your warm-up if you're planning to hike to the top of Diamond Head!

Across from the  Diamond Head Trail  entrance is the KCC Farmers Market  which is open only on Saturday mornings. It is a must if you're already there!

Route 2, 2L (Westbound)  Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art

• Duration:  Approximately 20 min to Honolulu Museum of Art, 25 min to Iolani Palace, 40 min to Bishop Museum from bus stops in Waikiki

Getting around Honolulu

Fringed by beaches and fronted by palms, Honolulu is the most visited destination in Hawaii and also where the majority of Oʻahu residents live, so it should come as no surprise that traffic and congestion are the norm.

The good news is that the airport is only 5 miles from downtown, and there are plenty of ways to get around to avoid the jams. Here's our guide to getting around Honolulu.

TheBus , the city’s public transportation system, is a reliable and easy way to get around, and fares are very affordable: journeys start at $2.75 one way. If you are vacationing for several days, consider getting a HOLO pass ; you can charge the card with credit and use it to pay for bus rides, and the total daily spend on bus fares is capped at $5.50, even if you go right across the island. You can pick up a pass at ABC stores, Times Supermarket and Foodland locations.

While you can get to beaches and popular sites by bus, one downfall is that buses do not go to the trailheads for Honolulu hikes (a taxi or a rental car is the best option here). The hop-on, hop-off tourist bus known as the Waikiki Trolley is a solid choice for getting to the main tourist attractions.

When you need a break from downtown life, consider renting a car to explore the countryside, regional parks and beaches around Honolulu. Keep in mind though that most hotels in Honolulu charge for parking, and demand for on-street metered parking can outstrip supply on weekdays.

All the big rental firms are represented in Waikiki and at the airport. For cheap deals, search sites like carrentals.com , turo.com , kayak.com and 808 Smart Car Rentals , who offer energy-efficient Smart cars and discounted parking in Waikiki. Ride-sharing companies such as Uber and Lyft also rent out vehicles.

Moped and motorcycle

If you are 16 years or older with a valid driver’s license, you can rent a moped, and explore Honolulu exposed to the balmy sunshine. For motorcycles, you must be 21. Traffic can be a hassle downtown, but on two wheels, it's easy to escape the busyness of Honolulu and go mauka (mountain-side, the local terms for heading inland from the beach).

For a scenic taste of inland riding, take the winding roads to Nu’uanu Pali Lookout , where the heart-stopping views will compel you to stop and reach for your camera. Or drive east down Kalanianaole Highway for views of volcanic cliffs, white-sand beaches and powerful waves.

If you are at the airport or a hotel, taxis are easy to find in Honolulu, but you'll need to navigate the sluggish traffic, meaning fares can creep up. TheCab and Charley's Taxi are the biggest local taxi companies. If you're out and about, the cheapest option is to hail a ride via a ride-sharing app such as Lyft, Uber or HoloHolo, Hawaii’s local ride-sharing company.

Tip for taking taxis in Honolulu: If you prefer to stick to traditional taxis, rather than hailing a cab like you would in New York, go to a taxi stand where a concierge will arrange the taxi for you. You'll find them near tourist sights, malls and transport hubs.

Cycling can be a good option for sightseeing. Biki, Honolulu’s bike-sharing program, has 1300 bikes and more than 130 bike stands dotted around Honolulu; affordable fares start at $4 and non-residents can rent bikes for up to five hours at a time. Purchase a pass at the kiosk or download the Biki app.

Popular routes include Ala Moana Regional Park , the tracks around Magic Island Lagoon, the South King Street protected bike lane, trails by the Ala Wai Canal and the 4.3-mile Waikiki Loop. Keep in mind that Hawaii has a state law requiring cyclists under 16 to wear helmets. Also, be aware of traffic at all times; Honolulu is a busy and crowded city and drivers don't always give cyclists room to maneuver.

More good news: Honolulu is eminently walkable. Sidewalks are well maintained, and many of the capital city’s historic treasures – the Aloha Tower , ʻIolani Palace , the seafront statue of King Kamehameha and the Hawaiian Mission Houses , to name just a few – are within walking distance of each other.

Start walking in Kaka’ako, which was once a gritty industrial district back in the 1800s, but it's now a hub of Honolulu activity. Known for its street murals and ample stock of pubs and local boutiques, it’s not only great for keeping busy, it’s also perfect for people watching.

Equally walkable is the nearby Chinatown District , a cultural gem, full of traditional Chinese markets, herbalists, bakeries and artisanal shops. The Hawaiʻi Heritage Center offers 2-hour walking tours that focus on the food, culture and heritage of the district, or take a self-guided tour and discover at your own pace.

Waikiki is walkable, too. Here you’ll find upscale shops such as Chanel, Coach and Gucci, more interesting local boutiques and lots of fancy resorts, plus Honolulu's most famous stretch of sand. Wind up your walk with an amble around Honolulu Zoo and the impressive Waikiki Aquarium .

Accessible transportation in Honolulu

For travelers with disabilities, rental vans with wheelchair access can be found through companies like Soderholm Mobility and Wheelers Accessible Van Rentals . Taxi and shuttle companies with accessible vehicles include TheCAB, Charley’s Taxi and Flash Shuttle Services . When traveling on TheBus, drivers will help you access the ramp or lift.

Newer hotels have elevators and wheelchair-accessible rooms (just be sure to book well ahead of time), but getting around town can be a mixed bag. Streets and sidewalks tend to be accessible with ramps, and all museums and public buildings are ADA compliant, but there are many areas where it gets tricky for the mobility impaired.

How much does the Waikiki tour bus cost?

The price of the tourist bus pass depends on the number of days you choose. The basic 1-day pass for all lines costs 39 euros .

However, depending on the number of days you are going to stay on the island, I recommend selecting a pass that includes more days so you can see the tourist attractions included in the route, getting on and off the bus as many times as you want and you can also use it as a means of transportation to move around Oahu.

How to book a ticket for the Waikiki tour bus?

You can book online and in advance your pass for the Waikiki tour bus. When you complete your reservation you will receive a voucher that you can redeem for your pass at any of the stops that the tour buses have in the different zones.

How does the tour bus service work?

Unlike regular buses where you usually pay for a ticket that allows you to take a single trip where you choose your stop, on the Oahu and Waikiki tour bus you pay for days of use, which entitles you to use the ticket as many times as you wish during the time you choose.

You can select between a 1, 4 or 7 day pass for all routes with free stops. Your usage time will start counting from the first time you redeem it.

Is it worth it to ride the Waikiki tour bus?

Absolutely. You have several different passes to choose from so you can tour the different routes and explore Oahu freely using the tour bus as a means of transportation, hopping on and off at all the stops scattered throughout the city.

How long is the tour bus ride?

Each complete route has a specific duration. The Green / Blue line - Ocean Diamond Head lasts 2 hours ; the Red line - City Art District lasts 1 hour and the Pink line - Ala Moana Shopping Shuttle lasts 1 hour as well.

However, you can get off at any stop of your choice at any time along the route to explore an area in detail and later re-board the tour bus to continue the route to completion.

Does the Oahu tour bus go through the airport?

No, the tour bus does not go through the Honolulu airport, but if you wish to travel there or are looking for a means of transportation to take you to your hotel from the airport, I recommend booking a shared or private transfer in Honolulu .
