The Vatican City: the Smallest Country in The World

The Vatican isn’t just the smallest country in the world. This tiny State, with a population of less than 500 inhabitants, is renowned as the famous headquarters of the Catholic religion and the home of the Pope.

You have two options to explore the Vatican: you can visit it during a self-guided tour or join a guided tour of the Vatican. Personally, I’d recommend the latter, even if you happen to be a permanent resident of Rome. And now, let me explain why.

Are Guided Tours of the Vatican Worth it?

In a nutshell… yes. While it’s possible to explore the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica on your own, a guided tour can truly make a difference.

Why Opt for a Vatican Guided Tour

• A guided tour typically covers all the main attractions of the Vatican in a well-organised single tour of a few hours.
• The Vatican Museums are truly vast and filled with exquisite artworks. In fact, they’re so extensive that attempting to visit them independently can be overwhelming. With a guided tour, you can focus on the essential highlights without running the risk of getting tired before you’re even halfway through the visit.
• Even with a skip-the-line tour, queues for the Vatican Museums can be incredibly long. Choosing a guided tour with authorised tour operators can be a smart solution, as it grants you access through partner-exclusive entrances.

As I mentioned earlier, a guided tour is definitely the best way to make the most of your visit to the Vatican. I’ve tried visiting the Vatican on my own multiple times, and having an expert guide by your side can truly make a difference. These tours usually start at a meeting point in the area.

Group Tours of the Vatican

This is the most common type of tour. Many tour operators offer tours in small groups, so following your guide and moving around the Vatican Museums is not complicated at all. Besides, if you ever feel like breaking away from the group, you can always rejoin them and continue at your own pace.

Private Tours of the Vatican

This is a decidedly luxury option. The price of a private Vatican tour is higher than a group tour. The advantages? You’ll have the guide entirely at your disposal. Moreover, many private Vatican tours include pick-up and drop-off at your hotel or apartment.

Vatican Early Opening Tours

Among the various guided tours, both private and group, there are some that grant access to the Vatican Museums at their early opening. As I’ve mentioned before, the Vatican is one of the major tourist attractions in Rome, and there’s often a very long queue to get in.

So, if you want to see them without the typical crowd that fills them, I recommend booking one of the Vatican’s early opening tours. You’ll literally be the first to step inside the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, and your visit will have a whole different feel.

Self-guided Tours of the Vatican

If you’re on a budget, you can still visit the Vatican by purchasing an entrance ticket to the Vatican Museums without a guide. However, this option may entail waiting in line at the entrance for as long as 3 or 4 hours. The same goes if you decide to visit only St. Peter’s Basilica, which doesn’t require an entrance ticket.

Skip-The-Line Tours of the Vatican

Let me tell you: skip-the-line tickets for the Vatican are worth every penny of their price.

In the past, I worked for a tour operator, and for work-related reasons, I visited the Vatican several times with a skip-the-line service. I can assure you that if you choose the right tour operator, you won’t even wait for 5 minutes at the entrance. You’ll bypass the long queue that starts from Via Leone IV and goes all the way to the Vatican ticket office. And you’ll thank me for recommending this type of tour.

After-Hours Tours of the Vatican

From April to October, the Vatican stays open on Friday evenings. So, if you wish, you can opt for one of the enchanting evening tours of the Vatican offered by tour operators. Not only will you see the Vatican in a completely different light, but you’ll also avoid sightseeing during the hottest hours of the day.

Tours of the Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo

Castel Gandolfo is a delightful town on the shores of its namesake lake, located about 24 kilometres southeast of Rome. It’s been the summer retreat for the Pope for centuries.

And now, you have the fantastic opportunity to join a tour of the Pontifical Villas, where you can travel to Castel Gandolfo and explore the beautiful gardens and historic residences that belong to the Vatican, just outside the confines of Vatican City itself.

These tours are typically available during the summer months, and you can easily reach Castel Gandolfo by train from the Vatican Museums. Most guided tours at the Vatican run for a standard 2 to 3 hours, giving you an overview of the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and the iconic St. Peter’s Basilica. These tours usually start early in the morning or early in the afternoon, leaving you plenty of time to enjoy the place.

Of course, nothing is stopping you from entering the Museums when they first open and spending the entire day delving into the wonderful art collections they hold.

Dress Code for the Vatican 

The Vatican is a religious site, and although it attracts many tourists, it does have a conservative dress code. It’s really important to respect this dress code if you want to be allowed entry. Many foreign visitors are disappointed each year when they’re turned away due to inappropriate attire, and I don’t want you to be one of these.

To enter the Vatican, it’s important to:

• Avoid short skirts and shorts
• Cover your shoulders and arms
• Steer clear of plunging necklines and cropped tops
• Remove hats before entering
• Wear anything that might offend Catholic morals or decency
• Cover any tattoos you might have

I know it gets scorching hot in Rome during the summer, but it’s crucial to adhere to these rules. My advice for the hot months is to wear a long dress or lightweight suit, or perhaps bring a light jacket to cover your arms and shoulders before entering. You can show off your sexiest outfit after you’ve completed the visit.

Tip: By dressing respectfully, you’ll ensure a smooth visit to the Vatican and demonstrate your appreciation for the sacredness of the place. 

Tips For a Great Vatican Experience

And here we are at the end of this guide to Vatican tours. I’ll share a few extra tips that might come in handy in addition to what’s already been mentioned.

• Make sure to visit the Vatican early in the day – you can’t imagine how crowded it can get.
• Only book guided tours from professional authorised tour operators.
• Always double-check the opening times, especially around religious dates and events throughout the year.
• Purchase your ticket several weeks in advance, as they often sell out quickly.
• Upon entering the Vatican, you’ll go through a security check with a metal detector, similar to airport security. Be sure to read the rules on the official Vatican website . Among other things, you can’t bring knives, scissors, umbrellas, or cameras with you, and even things like tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed.
• Once inside the Sistine Chapel, remember not to take any photos or videos – it’s strictly prohibited, and the security personnel may ask you to delete any shots you’ve taken in front of them.
• Accessing the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel requires payment, but on the last Sunday of each month, you can enjoy free admission to both the museums and the Vatican Gardens from opening until 12:30 PM. Visiting St. Peter’s Basilica alone is, instead, always free, so you can still marvel at its grandeur without any cost. Happy exploring.

Catholicism shares some beliefs with other Christian practices, but key Catholic beliefs are that the Bible is the inspired, error-free, and revealed word of God and that baptism, the rite of becoming a Christian, is essential for eternal salvation.

Vatican City is located in the centre of the city of Rome. It’s the smallest country in the world, with an area of 44 hectares.

Best time to visit Vatican City

Vatican City enjoys a temperate climate most of the year, with June, July and August being the warmest months. Popular tourist spots can get very busy and crowded during the European summer, but the sun is shining and the weather is hot so it's still a great time to go.

April to May and September to October (while not as hot) still offer great conditions for travel, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds. It can get quite cold in the winter months of December and January.

Eating and drinking

If you take food or drinks when you visit the Vatican Museum you will need to leave them in the cloakroom for the duration of your visit. The museum has a cafeteria and pizzeria, and there are several other cafes and vending machines that can be found throughout the Vatican.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

For security reasons the Vatican Museum does not provide Wi-Fi access, however in open areas and in Piazza San Pietro, you may be able to pick up the regular mobile phone signal from the neighboring city of Rome.

In open areas within the Vatican Museum and in Piazza San Pietro, you may be able to pick up the regular mobile phone signal from the neighboring city of Rome. Make sure that global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home. 

The Vatican Museum strongly discourages the use of mobile phones inside the exhibition spaces and using your phone inside St Peter’s Basilica is frowned upon, as with most working churches. At a minimum, you should switch your phone on to silent. Mobile phones are strictly forbidden inside the Sistine Chapel.

What are the restrooms like in Vatican City?

Restrooms can be found within St Peter’s Basilica and in the Vatican Museum, however there are none in Piazza San Pietro. The best option in this area is to leave the square and find a local café.

There are only a few ATMs in Vatican City, so it’s easier to withdraw cash in the neighboring city of Rome before you enter.

Is Vatican City open to the public every day of the year?

The Vatican is closed on Wednesday mornings for papal audiences, which is when Piazza San Pietro is busiest. The Vatican Museum is closed on Sundays, except on the last Sunday of each month when entry is free, however, on these days you can expect to find large crowds. St Peter’s Basilica is open every day, but it may be especially busy on Sundays and special religious days such as Easter. Masses are held in St Peter’s Basilica frequently throughout each day.

Is Vatican City a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Homosexuality is legal in Vatican City, but it is a much-discussed topic in the Roman Catholic Church. The Vatican sees same-sex relationships as a sin and for this reason, LGBTQIA+ travelers may attract unwanted attention and officials, such as police, may not be sympathetic if anti-social behaviour is reported. For this reason, we encourage our travelers to exercise discretion when in the Vatican.

Is there a dress code for Vatican City?

Modest clothing is recommended for travelers who wish to visit the Vatican. If you are wearing low-cut or sleeveless tops, shorts, miniskirts or a hat, you may be refused entry.

Are you allowed to take photos inside Vatican City?

You are permitted to take photos for personal use only, in all areas of the Vatican Museums, apart from the Sistine Chapel. The use of tripods, stands, selfie sticks and any professional photography equipment must be authorized in advance by the Directorate of the Vatican Museums. Flash photography is not allowed at any time.

We were told to be there at 730. Our tour guide showed up at 8:05. The Vatican was extremely crowded which was not the tour guide’s fault. We had to stay at a steady pace so we had very little time to view the pieces of work. We could have benefited a bit more on the history/meaning of some things. Where it fell apart was at the train. Nobody told any of us the itinerary once we got on the train. The lunch left a lot to be desired. I appreciated going to the Vatican on a tour but there is a lot of room for improvement.

This tour would have been great except for one no small thing. We were met by our guide who provided an excellent tour of the Vatican grounds and the Sistine Chapel. We thought she would be our guide for the rest of the day. We were then taken over to the train station and put on a train. After a short train ride, when we got off, we were received by a set of buses and handed over to a driver who took us to the papal summer grounds. When we were dropped off at the train station, we were never explained what to expect or who would be meeting us on the other side. We got off of the bus with no idea what to do? or where to go? We were dropped off in front of a restaurant / concession area and just assumed we were supposed to go inside. We were served lunch, spoke to other travelers who were also trying to figure out "Now What?" After lunch and great conversations with fellow travelers, we got up and just assumed we were now on our own to walk around. We were then later intercepted by a lady who told us she was our tour guide for the next portion of our trip. (this was a 2.5 hour gap without knowing what to do or where to go) - like I said "No small thing" If our initial tour guide stayed with us for the whole day like we assumed, rode the train with us, ate lunch with us, & returned with us, this would have been an excellent tour. When we paid for a "small PRIVATE group tour" we thought this is what were going to get. Technically there were only four of us in our group so technically this meets the SMALL We never imagined we were just going to be handed off like some piece of meat or something.

This tour was well worth taking. Guides Kinga (in the Vatican) and Patrizia (at Castel Gandolfo) were very welcoming and informative. The lunch was pleasant, too.

A good day and a great lunch. Castle Gandolfo was a great stop and a nice train ride through the countryside. The day could have been improved by the person who met us in the morning giving a run down on what the day was going to entail as we didn't realise there would not be a guide with us all day and a few times we were unsure what to do.

On February 13th, the Vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, trailed by reporters as he left an event in Rome, spoke about Israel’s military strikes on Gaza. “Israel’s right of self-defense, which has been invoked to justify this operation, must be proportional, and with thirty thousand dead it certainly isn’t,” he said. Israel’s Embassy to the Holy See soon issued a statement, in Italian, calling Parolin’s remark about a “proportional” response “ deplorevole ,” or “deplorable.” The use of that word, as the theologian Massimo Faggioli noted on X, evoked the Vatican’s landmark 1965 declaration that the Church “deplores” antisemitism in any form. Implicitly, Israel was faulting a church leader for antisemitism, and doing so in the Church’s own terms.

It was the latest episode in a running drama over the Vatican’s position on the war. The day after the October 7th attack on Israel, in which Hamas and allied militants killed more than twelve hundred people and took two hundred and forty hostages , Pope Francis addressed the horror in general terms, saying, “Let the attacks and weapons cease, please, because it must be understood that terrorism and war do not lead to any resolutions, but only to the death and suffering of many innocent people.” The next Wednesday, at his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square, he affirmed “the right of those who are attacked to defend themselves,” and asked “that the hostages be released immediately.” Cardinal Parolin then called on Hamas to release the hostages, but cautioned that “in Israel’s legitimate defense, the lives of Palestinian civilians living in Gaza should not be endangered.” During the Sunday prayer service called the Angelus, on October 29th, Francis called for a ceasefire, saying, “Stop, brothers and sisters: war is always a defeat—always, always!”

On November 12th, more than four hundred rabbis and scholars involved in interreligious dialogue signed an open letter urging Francis to “extend a hand in solidarity to the Jewish community”—for example, by distinguishing “Hamas’ terrorist massacre aimed at killing as many civilians as possible” from “the civilian casualties of Israel’s war of self-defense.” The next week, Francis met with a dozen relatives of the hostages, and then met with ten relatives of Palestinians killed or jailed by Israel since October 7th. Emerging from their meeting, the Palestinians told reporters that Francis had spoken of Israel’s campaign as “genocide.” The Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, later denied that he had. The Washington Post then reported that, during a phone call in October, Francis had told Israel’s President, Isaac Herzog, that it is “forbidden to respond to terror with terror.” In a letter to his “Jewish brothers and sisters in Israel,” dated February 2nd, Francis reiterated that “the relationship that binds us to you is particular and singular, without ever obscuring, naturally, the relationship that the Church has with others and the commitment towards them too.” Response to his letter was scant and muted. “Many Israeli and Jewish leaders do not appear inclined to go out of their way to praise the pope’s letter,” John L. Allen, Jr., the editor of Crux , observed, “despite whatever appreciation they may feel for its contents—which suggests that post-Oct. 7 tensions in the relationship with Catholicism won’t be so easily assuaged.”

These rhetorical tempests echoed those that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine two years ago, when Francis was accused of equivocation for his initial refusal to name Russia as the aggressor in the war. At the time, Vatican officials defended Francis’s opacity by explaining that he hoped to act as a mediator in some future peace process—even though both countries are steeped in Orthodox Christian traditions that are leery of Roman Catholicism and of the papacy, in particular. This time, Francis is speaking more pointedly, and he is on firmer ground: for sixty years, the Vatican has sought a fresh start with Judaism, mindful of the deep roots of antisemitism in the Church’s past and Pope Pius XII’s silence during the Holocaust; Pope John Paul II spoke of Palestinians’ “natural right to a homeland” during a visit to the West Bank in 2000; and the Vatican has since supported a two-state solution, recognizing the State of Palestine in 2015. (In response, an Israeli official insisted that the recognition would “not advance the peace process.”) And yet it seems that, even in this war—fought in the place seen as the cradle of monotheism and known to Christians as the Holy Land—there is no clear role for a Pope.

Francis visited Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Jordan in 2014, and he has taken a keen interest in the Church’s activities in the area. In 2020, he named Pierbattista Pizzaballa the Latin Patriarch—the top Catholic official for Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and Cyprus. Born in 1965 in northern Italy, and a Franciscan friar since his late teens, Pizzaballa has spent most of his career in Jerusalem; he is fluent in Hebrew and English, but not in Arabic (a sticking point for some; his two predecessors were Arab Christians, one from Palestine and the other from Jordan). When Francis, during his 2014 visit, invited Mahmoud Abbas, the President of the Palestinian Authority, and Shimon Peres , then the President of Israel, to come to Rome and pray with him at the Vatican Gardens, Pizzaballa made the arrangements. In Rome last September, Pizzaballa was made a cardinal—the first to be based in Jerusalem—and was soon added to prognosticators’ lists of the papabili , the prospective successors to Francis. In any case, the elevation of a cleric who has worked directly with the Pope emphasized the Vatican’s commitment to the Church’s presence in the region.

That presence is complex and paradoxical. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in the West Bank; soon afterward, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus passed through Gaza on the “flight into Egypt,” as King Herod ordered the slaughter of male youth “under two” in Bethlehem. The sites of the Last Supper, the Agony in the Garden, and the Crucifixion, all in or near present-day Jerusalem, are cherished destinations for Christian pilgrims. In the Middle Ages, European Catholic monarchs launched the Crusades to claim Jerusalem from the Muslim “infidels.” Friars from Italy went to Jerusalem in 1219—at the urging of Francis of Assisi himself—and Franciscans have been at the heart of the Catholic community there ever since. In 1964, Paul VI became the first Pope to visit Jerusalem; in 2000, John Paul II, at the Western Wall, asked God’s forgiveness for the offenses of Christians against Jews.

In this region dense with proto-Catholic history, however, Catholics themselves are few. William Dalrymple, in his 1997 book, “ From the Holy Mountain: A Journey Among the Christians of the Middle East ,” observed that “fewer Palestinian Christians now remain in Palestine than live outside it.” He added that the remaining Christians “in Jerusalem could be flown out in just nine jumbo jets.” There has been further attrition since. In 2023, prior to the Israel-Hamas war, Christians made up two per cent of the population of Israel and one per cent of the population of the West Bank. The population of Gaza—more than two million people—included only a thousand or so Christians, down from seven thousand in 2007, when Hamas took control of the area and Israel instituted a blockade. Most were Greek Orthodox; the Catholic community (known as “the Latin Christians”) numbered fewer than a hundred and fifty people, centered on the lone Catholic church: Holy Family, in Gaza City.

Cardinal Pizzaballa was still in Rome when Hamas carried out its attack on civilians in southern Israel. But that same day the Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem, an ecumenical group of more than a dozen prelates to which he belongs, issued a statement. “We unequivocally condemn any acts that target civilians, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, or faith,” the group declared, without naming Hamas. The Israeli Embassy to the Holy See, on X, responded sharply, accusing the clerics of creating a “false symmetry” between Hamas’s “hideous war crime” and Israel’s “right to self defence.” Speaking to reporters nine days later, Pizzaballa offered to trade places with the children held hostage by Hamas, and he has since sought to strike a balance in public. Along with other Christian leaders, he joined a holiday meeting with Isaac Herzog at the President’s residence, in Jerusalem; entering a Christmas Eve vespers service in Bethlehem three days later, he wore a kaffiyeh over his cardinal’s garb. And from the Latin Patriarchate’s headquarters, in Jerusalem, he has coördinated relief efforts with Gabriel Romanelli, the pastor of Holy Family church.

Last weekend, a conference in Manhattan organized by the Catholic movement Communion and Liberation featured prerecorded interviews with Pizzaballa and Romanelli, conducted by Alessandra Buzzetti, an Italian journalist based in Jerusalem. The two clerics described the situation from their own perspectives. Pope Francis phones Romanelli and the Holy Family staff almost daily. Most Catholics in Gaza have taken shelter at Holy Family . In October, I.D.F. air forces struck St. Porphyrius, a Greek Orthodox church nearby, killing eighteen of the one hundred Gazans sheltered there. In December, NPR reported , the Latin Patriarchate said that an Israeli sniper had killed two Catholics—a seventy-year-old woman and her fifty-year-old daughter. Explosives had also shattered an adjoining convent where nuns of the Missionaries of Charity, the order founded by Mother Teresa, care for Gazans with disabilities. (Israel said it was not responsible for the attacks.) In mid-February, a Catholic man in need of dialysis left his family and set out for the hospital; he never made it. Concluding their interviews, both Romanelli and Pizzaballa said that Palestinian Christians today feel as anguished and as dispirited as at any time in memory.

“Call things by their name, in the truth, and at the same time try to keep relationships open with everyone and tell everyone, both sides, that we love them”: that is how Patriarch Pizzaballa described his approach last November. During the interview screened last Sunday, he told Buzzetti that the role of a figure such as himself is “to express solidarity, because . . . to love one doesn’t mean to hate the other.” In reply, Buzzetti quoted the Israeli novelist Etgar Keret , who had praised Pope Francis in similar terms in an interview with her. Keret said that in a situation characterized by “selective empathy”—Jews feeling empathy for Israel, Arabs for Palestine—Francis “is the only one who can express his closeness to both.” That same Sunday, Pope Francis, during the Angelus service, in Rome, urged pilgrims to keep in mind “the conflicts that stain the world with blood.”

By then, the dispute over Cardinal Parolin’s comment had subsided, after the Israeli Embassy claimed that the Ambassador’s letter, written in English, had been mistranslated: rather than “deplorable,” he had said “unfortunate.” It’s nevertheless ironic that the Vatican has been involved in a controversy over the proportionality of Israel’s military operation, because Francis has lately backed away from the body of thought that is the basis for proportionality in war. This is the just-war theory, which holds that a war is “just” if it is a response to an unjust act of aggression; if the response is proportionate to the offense; and if it is a last resort. Framed by St. Augustine in the fifth century, the just-war theory has been a point of reference in Catholic discussions of war and peace ever since. But Francis maintains that in the present age—when wars often involve non-state actors, and conflicts are back-shadowed by the possibility of a disproportionate nuclear response—the just-war theory is too broad. In an interview in 2022, he said, “A war may be just. There is the right to defend oneself.” But, he added, “resolving conflicts through war is saying no to verbal reasoning, to being constructive.”

A Pope commands no army, as Stalin is said to have pointed out. (“How many divisions has he got?”) He must make do with words, symbols, gestures, and rituals—the empire of signs that is the basis for both religion and diplomacy. The wars between Russia and Ukraine and between Hamas and Israel have made clear that the effects of a Pope’s words are limited, at best. And yet the rhetorical controversies surrounding those conflicts suggest a role, and a responsibility, for the Pope and other moral authorities—one that involves describing acts of war forthrightly while questioning their necessity and their scope. ♦

The Vatican Transforms a Prison Into a Gallery

For its offering at this year’s Venice Biennale, the Holy See chose an unusual venue: the Giudecca women’s prison.

An early version of “Dovecote,” a short, nearly wordless film directed by Marco Perego for exhibition at the Biennale, has a scene that tracks a man in uniform as he drives a motorboat through a morning in Venice. The city is showing off its glories, with palazzos and domed churches reflected in the canals, a blue sky above. The film shifts to black and white as the action moves inside a building less adorned than the ones the man has boated past, but grand, even so. It’s his workplace, the Giudecca women’s prison.

Perego said in a telephone interview that he wanted to contrast “the beauty of Venice, one of the most beautiful places in the world, then this silent place inside.” He added, “I wanted to ask the question of what freedom means.”

Once inside the prison, the film focuses on an unnamed character played by Perego’s wife, the actor Zoe Saldaña, who is to be released that day. Her companions are played by 20 actual prisoners.

During the Biennale, the film will be exhibited in the prison’s visitation room, as part of the Vatican Pavilion , which is being hosted throughout the building. The show will also feature work in various media by nine other artists, shown in spaces including the prison’s courtyards, chapel and cafeteria.

The Holy See first participated in the Biennale in 2013, but this is its first year showing at the prison. Pope Francis is expected to become the first pope to visit the Biennale , touching down by helicopter in the prison courtyard on April 28 before heading to the Piazza San Marco to celebrate Mass, according to Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, the prefect who leads the Vatican’s department of culture and education.

In an email, Giovanni Russo, the head of the Department of Penitentiary Administration in the Italian Ministry of Justice, said he was approached to host the Vatican Pavilion by the cardinal, who is also a poet and essayist. Russo explained, “When the cardinal made this proposal to us, I said to myself, I would be committing a sin, I would be violating my duties as a magistrate, if I did not accept this request immediately.”

With My Eyes is the title of the pavilion, curated by Bruno Racine, the director of Venice’s Palazzo Grassi museum, and Chiara Parisi, the director of the Centre Pompidou-Metz. “It conveys the message that we mustn’t only be spectators, but also witnesses,” Racine wrote in an email. He later elaborated,“A spectator is passive, while a witness conveys a message after having seen.”

One piece, by the Syrian-Lebanese artist Simone Fattal, puts excerpts from pieces written by inmates onto plaques made of hardened lava. One reads, in Italian, “In this place, there is no armor.” Another work has portraits of the prisoners as girls and young women by the French painter Claire Tabouret, based on photos supplied to her. The French hip-hop choreographer Bintou Dembélé has put together a dance to be performed, in part, by inmates. Prisoners will also serve as docents, leading visitors through the exhibits. (The guards also play a role: Visitors leave their cellphones with a guard upon entering, and guards accompany the visitors and prisoners throughout the space.)

Some 80 inmates live at the Giudecca, and Racine estimated that almost all of them would participate in the exhibition in one way or another.

The building’s past lives also feature in some of the pieces to be exhibited. Constructed in the 13th century, the structure became a convent in the 16th century, and then a hospital in the early 19th century, when the French ran Venice. It was next a military prison under the Austrians later that century, before becoming a civilian prison under the Italians in the 1900s.

The building’s current name, the Convertite , speaks of the conversion by some prostitutes who took holy orders, according to Dennis Romano, the author of “Venice: The Remarkable History of the Lagoon City .” In a phone interview, he said: “It was a convent dedicated to Mary Magdalene, which, of course, made perfect sense for an institution for reformed prostitutes, that moved in sometime in the 1540s. By 1562, it had become a cloistered order, one where they weren’t supposed to leave.”

For the Vatican Pavilion, the Brazilian artist Sonia Gomes plans to hang up one of her fabric pieces high in the chapel where some of the prisoners worship, attaching it between the balconies and the confessionals. She explained in a statement that she hoped to connect “the original function of the place, the Baroque convent for ‘reconverted’ women with the current life of the prison house, and the stories of women from all over the world.”

In Perego’s film, the camera visits another of the spaces used by prisoners, the dormitory, where Saldaña’s character and an inmate friend share a wordless farewell on a camp bed. Saldaña said: “You are wondering are they lovers, are they sisters, are they best friends. There is love, there’s a bond, and there’s a sadness to know that they’re not going to be together again.”

Perego said, “When we were shooting, I said, ‘Think you’re leaving home.’” Surrounded by actual prisoners, Saldaña’s character revisits familiar places, like the in-house tailor shop, where she has worked, and the shower room; gets her coat from the guard; and walks into an arcaded courtyard, where — from a balcony — the women look out at her and bang their tin mugs on a ledge to celebrate her release.

The Biennale show will also highlight some aspects of the way Italian authorities run this prison. “Exhibiting in a prison means showing a reality that is foreign to most people, who would never enter that space if it wasn’t for the artworks attracting them,” Parisi wrote in an email.

The penitentiary also has gardens, and the organic produce grown there by the prisoners (who are paid for their work) is sold to the public, and toiletries made in-house go into the bathrooms of some top Venetian hotels. A local group of volunteers, Rio Terà dei Pensieri, helped jump-start these enterprises.

“There is a real tradition of paternalism to Venetian charity, “ Romano said. “The charitable institutions of the period when this convent was founded thought that you ought to give people a trade.”

Another nod to the institution’s convent past is the inclusion of silk-screened prints by Corita Kent, a longtime Catholic nun and progressive activist who died in 1986. In an email, Parisi said that Kent’s work was included for its combination of “sacred texts, poetry, statements and Pop imagery, in works that challenge convention.”

Kent’s appearance in the Vatican show represents a posthumous rehabilitation of sorts, since, in her lifetime, an American cardinal, James McIntyre, denounced her silk screens as blasphemous.

Another artist in the show, Maurizio Cattelan, provoked controversy in Catholic circles with a work he made in 1999, a statue of Pope John Paul II felled by a meteorite. Cattelan’s contribution to the Vatican Pavilion is a sculpture of another human on the ground, an unidentified man, sleeping on the pavement with a dog for a companion.

The decision to involve inmates extensively in most of the pieces in this exhibition, Racine said, was taken after consultation with a prison psychologist. “The project is a unique opportunity for the inmates to get a form of recognition,” he wrote in an email. “The project aims at recognizing the dignity of the inmates without forgetting that these women are serving long sentences.”

Perego said he and his co-writer, Alexander Dinelaris, called their short film “Dovecote” after the traditional small houses built for domesticated pigeons. Perego compared the inmates to these birds, noting that they both often go unnoticed. “When you interview the majority of these women, outside, they feel completely invisible,” he said.

A few weeks after her visit for the shoot, Saldaña recalled: “The inmates are not allowed to have cellphones, so the moment they saw me with my cellphone, they kept saying, ‘Take a picture of me.’ Not only take a picture with me, but of me. They want to be seen, they want to be remembered.”

British troops may help deliver aid to Gaza

The BBC reports that no American forces would go ashore, however Britain is reportedly mulling sending troops when the aid corridor opens.

Aid would be delivered to Gaza from Larnaca in Cyprus before being transferred into lorries and smaller vessels.

Proposal for ceasefire

In other developments, Hamas is reviewing Israel's response to the movement's proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The group announced that it was open to any proposals for a permanent end of hostilities in the Gaza Strip, which factors in the needs and rights of the Palestinians.

Qatar, Egypt, and the USA are seeking to reach a deal for a prisoner exchange and a second ceasefire.

Escalation of conflict

Since the conflict erupted, at least 34,300 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli attacks on Gaza and about 1,200 people have died in Hamas attacks on Israel.

Elsewhere, two Hezbollah combatants and a civilian lost their lives on Saturday in Israeli air strikes in southern Lebanon. Unease along the Lebanon-Israel border intensified last October, following a volley of rockets launched by the Lebanese armed group in solidarity with Hamas' attack on Israel.

Israel then hit back by firing heavy artillery towards Lebanon.

Women's prison hosts Vatican's Venice Biennale show

A women's prison is the site of an immersive art show from the Vatican at the 60th Venice Biennale, an unlikely venue that its curator says is a "message in itself".

Away from the spotlight and the crowds of the prestigious international art fair, the former convent on the island of Giudecca in the Venetian lagoon now houses women serving long sentences. 

But during this year's Biennale it is home to the exhibit "With my Eyes", which considers the daily lives of the prisoners through the work of 10 different artists. 

Setting the tone on the exterior facade of the prison is an imposing painting of the soles of two bare feet with rough skin by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan.

"It was not a matter of turning the prison into a mundane exhibition space, but of engaging artists in artistic and relational work with female inmates," said Bruno Racine, the curator.

The invited artists were "united by a conscience of the context and a willingness to participate in a unique artistic and human experience", he said. 

"We had to find a concept, a place that was a message in itself" for the Vatican's show.

Pope Francis, who has repeatedly championed the cause of prisoners and others on society's margins, plans to tour the exhibition during a visit to Venice on Sunday.

- 'No armour' - 

Even gaining access to the show is part of the experience as visitors must comply with stringent security measures, including reserving in advance and leaving mobile phones in lockers during the visit.

Photography is not allowed. 

Twenty prisoners out of the institution's 80 are taking part in the show as guides, including Pascale and Marcella at a recent press day. 

In a decrepit outdoor brick corridor topped with barbed wire, poems and messages have been transcribed onto lava slabs by the Lebanese artist Simone Fattal. 

"I would like to isolate myself, to roll up in a ball in my chest, here there is no armour", one of them reads. 

At the end of the corridor is a work by the Claire Fontaine collective -- a neon eye that has been crossed out, symbolising invisibility and inmates' inability to access the outside world. 

Nearby, rows of lettuce are planted in a large garden with greenhouses, a rare glimpse into the daily life of the prisoners. 

"This is the part I call home. This is where we grow the fruit and vegetables that are sold outside," Marcella said.

In the courtyard, a blue neon message hanging on the wall calls out to visitors: "Siamo con voi nella notte" ("We are with you in the night"), a slogan born in Florence and used in 1970s Italy in support of political prisoners. 

Illuminated 24 hours a day, it can be seen from the cells. 

It's "a way of showing women that they're not alone", said a guard who was supervising the visit. 

- 'Intimate stories' -

A black-and-white short film by the Italian director Marco Perego features some of the inmates as well as his wife, the American actor Zoe Saldana, telling the story of a woman's last day in prison.

In another room are paintings of the prisoners and their loved ones by the French artist Claire Tabouret, reproduced from family photos. 

"She has collected pieces of intimate stories, of life. Here, there's my son," said Marcella, pointing to one of the paintings. 

At the end of the visit, Marcella recited a poem she had written and expressed enthusiasm about the pope's visit.

"We can't wait to see him. This whole project is a message of hope."
