Yes, it’s busy, touristy and often in disrepair. But parts of Hollywood still sparkle with gems of old glamorous hotels and celebrity hangouts along with an emerging urban cityscape and working production scene. Chinese Theatre

The forecourt of this iconic movie theater, filled with foot and hand prints of Hollywood icons, is kind of a tourist-choked hot mess. Most people flock here to measure their own extremities against the likes of John Wayne and Judy Garland. But past that, it’s an entirely different story. You can avoid the crowds by catching a flick inside, where the auditorium is as stunning as the IMAX screen’s laser projection quality (perhaps the best in town ).

The Hollywood Sign

Originally created in 1923, the then “Hollywoodland” sign was supposed to be up for only a year and a half, yet here it is a century later . Getting close to the Hollywood Sign, though, is an often contentious issue thanks to pressure from local homeowners. You can catch a dead-on glimpse of the sign on Beachwood Drive, or farther up the hill near Lake Hollywood Park . Looking to get even closer? Go horseback riding at Sunset Ranch or—of you’re alright with a view from behind—lace up for a trek along the otherwise off limits road on Mt. Lee Drive to where you will be standing directly above the Hollywood Sign and can experience a total 360-degree view of the cityscape.

Hollywood Roosevelt

This 1927 landmark, a beautiful example of Spanish colonial design, once welcomed the A-listers who frequented it during Hollywood’s heyday. It’s worth walking into the Hollywood Roosevelt just to explore its dramatic downstairs lobby—or to bowl a few frames inside swanky bar the Spare Room .

Hollywood Walk of Fame

If you can stomach the suspect superheroes, claustrophobia-inducing crowds and never-ending line of gift shops, tattoo parlors and lingerie stores, there’s actually a fair amount of old Hollywood history and glamour to discover along the Walk of Fame. The immortalized names on those famous five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars run from the Walk’s western extreme at the Hollywood and La Brea Gateway to the W Hotel and Pantages Theater at Gower, and additionally on Vine from the Capitol Records Building down to Sunset, near where the original movie studios sprang up a century ago. Runyon Canyon

• Parks and gardens

This 160-acre park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains has one main loop, plus a bevy of dirt hiking trails. The sea of buff trainers and their sleek, sweaty clients can get to be too much during the busy morning and weekend workout traffic, but you’ll be rewarded with some of the best views of the city (and, if you’re lucky, a chance to gawk at power-walking celebs). The southern entrance is at the end of Fuller Avenue in Hollywood; the northern entrance is off the 7300 block of Mulholland Drive.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Any cemetery that houses the remains of such celluloid luminaries as Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield, Rudolph Valentino and Mel Blanc was bound to become a tourist attraction. Aside from popular posthumous celebs, Hollywood Forever is also home to Cinespia’s summer outdoor movie screenings, an annual Day of the Dead festival and concerts, both outside on the lawn and inside the property’s Masonic lodge.

Ovation Hollywood

Known as Hollywood & Highland when it first opened, this shopping center helped usher in a commercial renaissance along Hollywood Boulevard—well, for a while, at least. Like many American shopping malls, it eventually became a shell of its former self, but a recent makeover  that’s renamed the complex Ovation seeks to add a bit of sparkle back to the block. The parking entrances are on Highland Avenue and Orange Drive.

Dolby Theatre

First known as the Kodak until its sponsorship swapped to Dolby in 2012, this 3,400-seat theater routinely hosts Broadway plays, high-profile screenings and the occasional concert. But the main attraction here, of course, is the Academy Awards: The annual star-studded broadcast will continue to be hosted here for the forseeable future, and all of the past Best Picture winners line the columns near the entrance.

If you are coming to Los Angeles by plane, you will probably land at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Although, the Bob Hope Airport (BUR), situated in Burbank, is closer to Hollywood itself.

The shuttle service from LAX is operated by LAXFlyAway and costs $8 per person per ride. The shuttle bus stops on the west side of Vine Street, half a block away to the south from Hollywood Boulevard.

If you come to Bob Hope Airport, you can take a metro shuttle to North Hollywood station, where you should change to the Red line and ride into Hollywood.

Keep in mind, taxis can be quite expensive and you might have to wait in a long line, in order to get one.

Other airports, available around the city, are Long Beach Airport (LGB), Ontario International Airport (ONT), and John Wayne Airport (SNA). While private planes, mostly, come to Santa Monica (SMO), Van Nuys (VNY), or Hawthorne (HHR).

Consider your plans for Los Angeles promptly, when packing your luggage. Are you going to visit a theater performance, have a picnic, spend days on the beach, or go sightseeing from sunrise until the sunset? Are there any theme parks on your itinerary? Or, maybe, you wish to go hiking in one of the parks?

Make a list of the things you might need, not to forget anything. Swimsuit, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential if you are coming during the summer season. For a long day of sightseeing, pack snickers, slippers, or any other shoes you find comfortable. If you are going hiking, good hiking boots are obligatory. And for a fancy event, such as theater performance or a dinner in a top-end restaurant, don’t forget a nice evening gown.

If Hollywood is even missing something, it is definitely not the number of facilities for eating out. Cafes, bars, and restaurants range from cheap fast food cafes to luxury restaurants, popular with most famous celebrities.

If you are on a low budget, try Ponchik Factory, Roro’s Chicken, Tacos El Gavilan, Skooby’s, La Monarca Bakery & Café, Running Goose, Musso and Frank Grill, Cheebo, Palms Thai Restaurant, or one of the numerous other bistros and cafes all around Hollywood.

However, if you are looking for something unique and elegant, you should head to Yamashiro, Japanese restaurant, which offers great vies of the city, as well as cozy gardens and tasty food. And, just across from the Chinese Theater, you’ll find ceFiore, fine place with Italian desserts, non-fat frozen yoghurt, and yogurt smoothies.

For drinks, try Roosevelt Hotel Lounge, The Well, Velvet Margarita Cantina, or Power House. And if you are a non-alcohol enthusiast or just thirsty for some juice, head to The Juice Fountain, which offers a variety of delicious fresh juices.

As well as with eating facilities, there is no lack of night entertainment in the city, which never sleeps. The number of theaters and nightclubs is exquisite, and New York City is, probably, the only place, which can compete with it.

For cultural evening out, you can choose one of the following options: Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood Palladium, Fonda Theater, Ford Theater, Pantages Theater, or Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

During the summer season, every Saturday at 7 pm, Hollywood Forever Cemetery hosts Cemetery Movie Screenings, where the Cinespia film society shows old movies. Keep in mind, the crowds can be huge, so arrive prior to the gate opening, if you want a good spot. The same rule applies to tickets, which should be purchased in advance.

Most people bring picnic food with them and enjoy the outdoor movie theater, as well as DJ music playing, while having a nice dinner. But keep in mind, no spirits are allowed, only beer and wine.

The Mulholland Drive offers great views of Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley, both at night and during the daytime, so don’t miss the opportunity. And as for night clubs, head to Sunset Strip, where you’ll find most popular night facilities and disco bars.

Hollywood is situated between Melrose Avenue on the south, the Hollywood Hills on the north, the 101 freeway on the east, and West Hollywood on the west. Two main streets are Hollywood Bouleward and Sunset Boulevard, which are both walkable, as well as the rest of Hollywood most interesting areas.

Springs bring both sunny and rainy days, and often, Los Angeles experiences “May Gray” and “June Gloom”, along with the rest of Southern California. Those are marine effects, which bring fog and clouds. Therefore, spring months are not the best time for a beach vacation. Falls are mostly warm and dry, causing frequent wildfires, so be careful if you are going wild during this season. Ocean temperature throughout the year varies from 14 o C (58 o F) in January to 20 o C (68 o F) in August. It’s not warm enough for swimming, but is great for surfing and sailing.

The well-known Santa Ana winds usually come during autumn and winter, although can occur any other time of the year as well. During these periods, hot dry winds blow from the desert to the coast, making weather hot and dry, unlikely the typical climate conditions in the area. Powerful ones can even create a high fire danger, by raising the air temperature quite significantly.

There is no lack of places to see in Hollywood. You can choose the best Hollywood tour from our list above or explore them on your own. If you are into film industry, don’t miss most world famous studios, such as Universal Studios, Warner Brothers Studios, Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures, and CBS Television City. Interestingly enough, there are quite a few differences between the tours offered at each studio, and that should make it easier to figure out which tour best fits your expectations.

Ticket prices vary from $62 per person to literally thousands of dollars.

However, 3 of the tours, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, and Universal Studios are included for free or at a lower cost in several tourist attraction passes. 

It's also worth noting that the length of these tours can run from roughly an hour to almost a week.

If you're in the market for a somewhat normal tour on the backlot, this might be one of your best bets.

In addition to seeing movie sets and sound stages from some of the most notable movies in film history, you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy a few specific activities.

  While on this movie studio tour, you'll be able to re-create a famous scene from the hit television show Friends , climb aboard Harry Potter 's broomstick, and even create your own Batmobile.

Warner Bros. even offers an interactive sound stage that explores the entire process of making a film from start to finish.

At three hours in length, this tour is probably the longest duration of all of the options in Hollywood.

This might be the most affordable movie studio tour in Hollywood, and it's also one of the most historic. Do note, that is is a walking tour.

While on this tour, you'll see the sound stages where they recorded classics such as The Wizard of Oz and superhero flicks like Spider-man .

Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to see where Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are recorded.

Although they don't make any promises, there's always a chance that you'll run into someone famous on this active studio back lot!

They also offer a premium tour which includes transportation via golf cart, access to the Sony Museum, a free souvenir photo, a complimentary beverage, and lower prices at the Sony Studio Store.

Customers really appreciated the opportunity to see several historic filming locations and learn a lot about the process of making a movie.

Although some reviewers were unhappy that this is a walking tour, others simply appreciated the opportunity to see where film history was made.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS TOUR

This is where things get interesting, as Universal Studios has essentially made their tour one of the services offered at their amusement park.

In other words, you need to buy a ticket for Universal Studios Hollywood in order to experience this studio tour.

Clocking in at only one hour in length, this is definitely the shortest studio tour available. Check out this video of Stephen Spielberg giving a tour of the site.

In addition to seeing the back lot, you'll also experience attractions such as the Jaws ride, King Kong 360 in 3D, Bates Motel and Fast & The Furious : Supercharged.

Although it will cost more to take this tour, it's worth noting that your ticket lasts all day and guarantees access to all of the rides.

Despite the higher price tag, this movie studio tour has still received quite excellent ratings ( read reviews here ). The overall Universal Studios Hollywood experience has a score of 4.7 out of 5 stars .

A few visitors have even suggested that this trip around the studio is worth the price of admission.

Although most customers feel that the ticket price is a bit high, even the critics can't deny that they had a blast. 

PARAMOUNT PICTURES STUDIO TOUR

Unlike the other movie studios, Paramount Pictures offers three different studio tours.

The main tour is 2 hours long and covers quite a lot of ground on the backlot.

However, if you want to experience more, their VIP tour lasts for 4 ½ hours and includes access to several additional areas.

The VIP tour also provides a gourmet lunch at a unique location in the studio.

Alternatively, you can also choose a 2 ½ hour night tour that reveals a lot of historic locations such as notable theaters and original film vaults.

No matter which option you choose, you'll learn a lot about the history of Paramount.

Reviews for the Paramount Pictures Studio tours are very positive, averaging a rating of 4 ½ out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor. 

Some visitors referred to the excursion as a movie buff's dream, while others were just impressed with how much they learned and discovered.

Some reviewers indicated that Paramount alters the tour slightly depending on the season, ensuring a nice variety of topics and locations to cover no matter when you decide to buy a ticket.

ADVENTURES BY DISNEY: DISNEY BACKSTAGE

You had to figure that Disney was going to be a little more expensive, but the actual cost of this week-long experience might shock you.

To be fair, the package includes meals and accommodation at both the Loews Hollywood Hotel and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.

This Disney backstage adventure includes a tour of the Walt Disney Studios & Archives, an Imagineering tour, a Hollywood walking tour, and a tour of the Jim Henson Company.

Karie was exceptional! Even through an on/off again rain storm, she led us through an entertaining--and informative--tour. This is a must for any film and/or historical enthusiast, highly recommend!

The tour is fascinating, engaging and fill with furry friends. Karrie is a wonderful guide, whose personality is laced with charm, wit and southern gentility. She gives a voice to the forgotten, while enthusiasticly remembering the greats! Go to the tour!! It's a great way to spend an afternoon.

I recently took this tour and found our guide to be very informative. I strongly recommend. One point that came up on the tour is who the Agnes de Mille Prude was in the deMille family plot. She is, in fact, THE Agnes deMille, daughter of film director William C. deMille, also buried there. Cecile B. DeMille, who gets top billing in the family plot, was her uncle. She grew up in this town when it was regarded as a cultural wasteland. She graduated from UCLA and went on to be one of our greatest choreographers. She did, in fact, choreograph the dream ballet in the original production of Oklahoma for Rodgers and Hammerstein, as well as in the film version. In the second episode of Kevin Brownlow/David Gill Hollywood series, she is prominently featured, giving her recollections of growing up in Hollywood in the early days. She has some quite wonderful recollections.

Truly great tour. I got everything I wanted - history of the cemetery itself as well as great stories about classic Hollywood stars. This tour was the highlight of my trip to LA. I would highly recommend it.

Hollywood Forever cemetery

Michael S. Smith’s Latest Project Is a Masterclass in Indoor-Outdoor Living

Walls disappear, art reflects nature, and old-growth olive trees whisper of old Hollywood.

The prime three-acre property, which feels deeply private yet has choice views over Los Angeles, was home to several Hollywood legends over the course of the 20th century. The present 14,000-square-foot home was designed by architect Howard Backen, pioneer of the modern American farmhouse aesthetic. Drawn to what Smith characterizes as the home’s “spare, reductive series of volumes,” his clients brought in landscape designer Christine London to rethink the garden, expanding the views across the property and through the house.

“The goal was to create cohesion for the family’s full use of the property so that the rhythm of the garden balances open and enclosed spaces, wood and glass, private retreats and larger gathering spaces, all in response to both the architecture and the land,” says London, who also oversaw the transplanting of beloved white crape myrtle trees, bonsai boxwoods, and other prized plantings from the family’s former garden.

Indoors, Smith wanted to respect the home’s luxe rusticity, which he summed up as “comfortably proportioned and well edited, like something you’d see in a Nancy Meyers film,” while also reflecting the sophisticated taste and passions of his clients. “They are significant art collectors with wide-ranging interests, and their homes need to match that level of refinement to be engaging for them.”

Perhaps no room reveals more clearly the balance struck by Smith’s urbane decorating and the home’s casual, open design than the kitchen and great room. Clad, as the rest of the house, in simple bleached walnut planks, the room opens to the outdoors on two sides through vast doors that seem to disappear into the walls. It has the distinctive (perhaps intentional) feel of a small barn or shed that’s been upgraded to be part of the house. In this case, the upgrade includes a museum-caliber painting by Kenneth Noland, a vintage rosewood cabinet, and stylish Swedish ceramics.

By contrast, the grandly proportioned dining room—which has its own large glass wall opening to the garden—is decidedly more polished and cosmopolitan. Here, an elegant suite of klismoses from Saridis in Athens, Greece, surrounds a custom marble and gilt-bronze dining table by French designer Hervé Van der Straeten. Gesso and silver leaf panels by Nancy Lorenz appear as a folding screen and open to reveal a glamorous built-in bar.

Throughout, Smith has deftly deployed the couple’s stellar art collection as yet another way of bringing the outdoors in. Beyond landscapes, there are tropical beaches, swimming pools, and even a tightly focused composition of dense foliage, as is the case of a work by Nigerian-born Njideka Akunyili Crosby in the great room.

Even with its impressive Pagani Studio ceiling lamp in the husband’s study, Smith says: “The clear focal point of the room, what catches your eye immediately, is the intense blues of David Hockney’s Paper Pool: Diving Board,” created with Tyler Graphics. In the wife’s dressing room, Lorenz camouflaged the closet doors with a forest of branches created in lacquer and mother-of-pearl, again echoing the quiet luxury of Japanese screens.

For all the nature brought into the home through the windows and artworks, there are also multiple outdoor “rooms” in the garden. Among the most popular for family and guests is the sprawling courtyard lounge anchored by a monumental concrete fireplace, a signature Backen home feature, that provides a cozy sense of shelter and wonderment beneath the stars. And of course there’s art, including a steel sculpture by Bernar Venet at the culmination of an evergreen allée. “The house and the garden blend so well to provide moments for reflection and appreciation of nature,” says Smith. “Add in Hockney’s wonderful pool iconography, and it’s the perfect summation of idyllic California living.”

Old Hollywood Glam Alert: Wallace Neff-Designed Spanish Colonial in Pasadena Hits the Market for $10.8M

As chic as Hollywood’s shiny, new glass-and-steel mansions might be, it’s hard to beat the stately Spanish Colonial Revivals of the 1920s and 1930s.

And if your tastes tend in that direction, you’re in luck—a Pasadena, CA, landmark, designed by California architect Wallace Neff , just landed on the market for $10.8 million.

“The 1920s was the Golden Age for Southern California architecture and an era of unprecedented wealth, where innumerable opulent mansions were built in spectacular locations by celebrated architects, such as Wallace Neff,” explains listing agent Carol Chua , a Coldwell Banker global luxury property specialist affiliated with the Pasadena office of Coldwell Banker Realty.

She’s referring to the era’s major power players, who flocked to sunny Southern California to build lavish estates.

“The Charles H. Thorne House is a prime example of a Wallace Neff masterpiece, commissioned in 1928 for the chairman of retail giant Montgomery Ward,” says Chua. “On a private, gated lane in the exclusive Los Altos neighborhood, this magnificent residence sits among towering Italian stone pines, across from the prestigious Annandale Golf Club and only minutes to downtown Los Angeles and the studios.”

Preserved property

The current owners adored their digs for over 50 years, mindfully restoring it along the way. They were careful to preserve its signature features, such as the romantic central courtyard with brilliant, flowering bougainvillea; the lush green lawn; and the sparkling Spanish fountain.

Ornate details

Neff is said to have been inspired by Mission San Juan Capistrano when he built the home, incorporating thick, arched walls; intricate grillwork; carved doors; ornate fixtures; and patterned tiles. He also appreciated the view and included panoramic windows overlooking the entire San Gabriel Valley, the nearby mountains, and the Arroyo Seco.

The property has a collective 10 bedrooms, 12 baths, and 10,082 square feet, all on a distinctive, 1.7-acre knoll. That includes an independent apartment above the four-car garage.

There are three original fireplaces in the home, all uniquely designed. One of them is in the living room, which also has soaring, 20-foot, beamed ceilings. Another of the standout fireplaces is tucked into a corner in one of two primary suites.

The bright, sunny kitchen with black-and-white, checkered flooring features a new dining island and top-of-the-line appliances. A well-organized butler’s pantry rounds out the cook space.

Additional rooms include a summer kitchen, library, an office, a 1,755-square-foot basement, and a picturesque gallery overlooking the courtyard.

Often referred to as the original “architect to the stars,” Neff designed the legendary “Pickfair” mansion for Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford . Since then, his unmistakable Spanish- and Mediterranean-style homes have been the choice of celebrities including Bob Newhart , Madonna , Diane Keaton , and Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston , among others.
