Towing A Travel Trailer With A Jeep Wrangler

Towing A Travel Trailer With A Jeep Wrangler: All You Need To Know

Travel trailers provide more freedom than RVs for overlanding adventures, since you can leave your trailer parked in your campsite and use your vehicle to go exploring.

You also do not always need a huge truck to pull your travel trailer, in fact, Jeep Wranglers and other small SUVs are capable of pulling many travel trailer models.

But, what are the limitations of the size and weight of travel trailer you can pull with a Jeep Wrangler? Do you need special equipment? What are the best travel trailers that you can tow with a Jeep Wrangler?

I’ll cover all of these questions and more in this article, so that you can hit the road with your Jeep Wrangler and your tiny home on wheels in tow.

Towing A Travel Trailer With A Jeep Wrangler_ All You Need To Know

What Is The Towing Capacity of a Jeep Wrangler?

When towing anything with your Jeep Wrangler, it’s important to keep three things in mind:

  • The Vehicle
  • The Trailer

What Can the Vehicle Handle?

First things first, you need to know your Jeep’s towing capacity. Most Jeep Wranglers have a towing capacity of 2,000 to 3,500 pounds, depending on the model that you have.

In general, two-door Jeep Wranglers can tow a travel trailer that’s weights up to 2,000 pounds, while the four-door models have a tow rating of up to 3,500 pounds.

Newer Jeep Wranglers have a higher towing capacity. The JK Wrangler (2006 to present) has some trailer hitches with towing capacity up to 5,000 pounds.

The TJ Wrangler (1997-2006) has bumper mounted towing hitches, but chassis-mounted hitches are also available and can tow up to 4,000 pounds.

After towing capacity, the Jeep’s payload rating is important to keep in mind.

The maximum payload capacity is the total weight of everything in or on your Jeep, including the driver, passengers, fuel, winch, skid plates, and any gear you pack inside or on the vehicle.

You should be able to find your Jeep’s payload rating on the driver’s side door or B-pillar. Never tow if your payload exceeds the vehicle’s capacity.

What is the Condition of the Trailer

What is the Condition of the Trailer?

Even though the Jeep will do the majority of the work when towing, you need to make sure your travel trailer is safe to pull.

Check for damage or rust, especially on the trailer base (axles, frame, etc.). Make sure that the exterior lights are working properly, especially the brake and turn signal lights.

Your trailer tires should also be in good condition with plenty of tread to good contact with the road when you’re on the move.

You’ll need to consider the trailer’s GVWR before you buy, since it will need to be light enough to meet your Jeep Wrangler’s capacity for towing.

As you calculate what you can pack and bring with you on your travels, remember to account about 10% of your trailer’s GVWR for payload (clothes, gear, water, food, cooking fuel, etc.).

Are You Ready to Drive With a Trailer in Tow?

Your ability to drive with a heavy trailer in tow is also very important for safety.

Even if you have driven a vehicle with a trailer in tow before, you should take a couple of practice drives to get a feel for how this Jeep and this trailer maneuver.

You’ll need to be comfortable with the extra length, how to handle sharp corners, how to reverse and how the trailer reacts in reverse.

A helpful trick is to steer in the opposite direction that you want the trailer to go when you reverse.

Remember that any little change in direction from the Jeep will likely result in a big change at the back of the trailer, no matter what its length.

Can A Jeep Wrangler Pull A Travel Trailer?

Can You Pull a Travel Trailer With a Jeep Wrangler

With an average maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, you can definitely tow more lightweight travel trailers with your Jeep Wrangler. However, you’ll need to consider the trailer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), and not the dry weight.

This is because the GVWR takes into account the weight of your clothing, gear, water (fresh, gray, black) and gas.

In general, the kinds of travel trailers that have this low of a GVWR include pop-up trailers, teardrop trailers, hybrid trailers, and some Airstream trailers:

What Campers Can A Jeep Wrangler Tow?

Pop-up trailers.

Pop-up trailers are campers that collapse as you travel, which you then crank up to full height with standing room inside when you’re parked at your campsite.

towing popup camper with jeep wrangler

Other names for pop-up trailers are tent trailers or fold-out campers. These trailers are much lighter, since the sidewalls are usually canvas or another weather-resistant material that’s far more lightweight than aluminum or fiberglass.

The bed areas slide out as well, so you can have everything you need, including a kitchen and bathroom .

Average GVWR: 600 – 2800 pounds

Teardrop Trailers

A newer addition to the mini travel trailer scene is the teardrop trailer, which is shaped like a teardrop.

Inside, there’s typically only room for a bed, and the back of the trailer has a hatch that opens to cover your kitchen and cooking area. Sometimes, these trailers have an outdoor shower option.

Although they usually don’t have bathrooms or living areas inside, there are some lightweight teardrop trailers that do.

Average GVWR: 500 – 3,200 pounds (most are around 1,000 pounds)

Hybrid Trailers

Combining the design of a standard travel trailer and pop-up trailer, a hybrid trailer has hard sides with pop-out sleeping areas on one or both ends.

These pop-outs are canvas, tent-like material just like you find with a pop-up trailer, but hybrid trailers are more insulated and durable because of the hard side walls.

However, they tend to run a little heavier because of the use of heavier materials, so you’d need to get the lightest weight option if you’re towing it with a Jeep Wrangler.

Average GVWR: 3,000 – 7,000 pounds

Low-Weight Airstream Trailers

Airstream trailers are the “old school” classic, silver bullet travel trailers, and many people love them not just for their retro ambiance, but for the durability and design style.

Most Airstream trailers are too heavy to tow with a Jeep Wrangler, but the Airstream Sport 16RB is just lightweight enough, with a GVWR of 3,500 pounds.

That’s cutting it a little bit close, but if you’re careful to pack minimally, you can tow it with your Jeep Wrangler.

Lowest GVWR: 3,500 pounds

What Equipment Do You Need to Tow a Travel Trailer With a Jeep Wrangler?

What Equipment Do You Need to Tow a Travel Trailer With a Jeep Wrangler

The baseline equipment that you will need to safely tow a travel trailer with any vehicle are a receiver hitch and a trailer wiring plug so that you can connect the rear brake and turn signal lights.

You will also need a hitch ball and a mount with a hitch pin that match your trailer, and safety chains crossing underneath the tongue to catch it just in case the hitch fails.

Most aftermarket bumpers are equipped with a hitch receiver that’s only intended for things like a cargo rack, and not a heavy travel trailer.

So, it’s important to make sure your hitch receiver is rated for towing. It should have a Class II or Class III designation, and be a 2-inch receiver instead of a 1.25-inch receiver to handle more weight.

The weight capacities of the towing tongue and hitch ball are also important considerations as you purchase or upgrade your towing equipment.

The tongue should only carry about 10% of the trailer’s GVWR, and certainly no more than 15%.

The rule of 10% also applies to the weight on the hitch ball, and you should be sure to load your trailer with balanced weight distribution.

Otherwise, you might see reduced performance as you travel at high speeds or even unsafe conditions such as sudden movements to the left or right.

There are also a couple of additional upgrades that might be good to consider when towing a travel trailer with a Jeep Wrangler.

For example, towing extra weight may cause your Jeep to overheat, so you might want to consider upgrading your vehicle’s cooling system.

You might also want to upgrade the brake pads and rotors, especially if they are older. Other good safety upgrades you might want to look at are sway control or a brake controller.

Benefits of Using a Jeep Wrangler to Tow Your Travel Trailer

A Jeep Wrangler is a fantastic SUV to own, whether you’re just driving around town or you’re towing your travel trailer into nature for an off-grid camping trip.

Some of the biggest advantages of using a Jeep Wrangler for pulling your travel trailer include:

  • Power and durability. Jeeps are designed to be powerful sports utility vehicles and off-road hustler. They handle well in any weather, and provide all-terrain exploring with powerful traction, excellent articulation, and easy maneuvering. While most Jeeps have an average towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, some can pull as much as 5,000 pounds, expanding your options for the kind and size of travel trailer you can tow.
  • Increased ground clearance. The cabin in a Jeep is higher than most vehicles, including other SUVs, providing a height advantage and greater visibility. Not only can you see further down the road, you can pull your travel trailer into more rugged camping locations (provided your trailer has high enough clearance).
  • Improved gas mileage. When you’re not towing anything, you can expect to get around 22 miles per gallon in the city and 29 MPG on the highway, but of course your gas mileage will be lower when you tow a travel trailer. When towing, your gas mileage will depend on your speed, but you can expect to get 10-15mpg.
  • Long lifespan. While most SUVs have an average lifespan of 200,000 miles, Jeep Wranglers often have double that at up to 400,000 miles. The V6 engine is also one of the best on the market and is extremely reliable, so you can travel with your trailer in tow for many miles and years to come.
  • Unique features and great upgrades. A top appeal of the Jeep is your ability to take the top off and enjoy the feeling of the wind in your hair. There are also a lot of useful upgrades that you can make to your Jeep to make it easier and more fun to use to pull your travel trailer along on your adventures. Some of the most popular upgrades include skid bars, winch mounts, and LED headlights, but there are many more available.

If you’re going to be camping in campgrounds or other locations with facilities and don’t want to sacrifice your limited interior space for a shower or bathroom, the High Camp teardrop trailer is an excellent choice.

It comes in at a GVWR of 2,500 pounds, so most Jeep Wranglers can easily tow it with capacity to spare.

High Camp has fitted their trailers for easy and safe towing, and include a 2-inch hitch ball, emergency breakaway switch, drop-down trailer stabilizers, and 10-inch electric drum brakes on every trailer.

Towing A Travel Trailer With A Jeep Wrangler: The Facts, Tips & Tricks

Towing A Travel Trailer With A Jeep Wrangler: The Facts, Tips & Tricks 2

We love travel trailers, they provide you with more freedom than you get from an RV. You can seek out over landing adventures, since you can leave your trailer parked up in your campsite and use your vehicle to go out and explore.

What is great about these, is that you do not always need a huge truck to pull your travel trailer along. As it so happens, Jeep Wranglers, and other similar SUVs are more than capable of pulling many travel trailer models.

Towing A Travel Trailer With A Jeep Wrangler: The Facts, Tips & Tricks 3

However, this leaves us to question what the limitations are when it comes to size and weight of travel trailers that you can pull with your Jeep Wrangler. It also bodes questions about what kind of equipment you will need to tow it, and if there are any travel trailers that are best to tow with a Jeep Wrangler.

We want you to make the best choice for you, so that you can get the most out of your Jeep, your travel trailer, and your adventures. So, today we will talk to you about towing a travel trailer with your Jeep Wrangler, be ready to learn everything there is to learn about this.

Are you ready?

What capacity can a Jeep Wrangler Tow?

When you are seeking to tow anything with your Jeep Wrangler, you need to consider three most important factors.

  • The Vehicle itself.
  • The Trailer you are towing.
  • The driver/ you.

How much can your vehicle handle?

So, before you do anything, you have to be aware of the towing capacity of your Jeep. Many Jeep Wranglers will have a towing capacity of around 2,00 lbs to 3,500 lbs. However, this does vary depending on the model you have.

In general, though, two-door Jeep Wranglers can tow a travel trailer that weighs up to 2,000 lbs. The four-door models, on the other hand, will have a tow rating of up to 3,500 lbs.

Keep in mind that newer model Jeep Wranglers will have a much higher towing capacity. For example, The JK Wrangler, which has been manufactured since 2006, has a trailer with hitches that can have a towing capacity of up to 5,000 lbs.

The TJ Wrangler which was made from 1997-2006 has bumper mounted towing hitches, but it can also have chassis-mounted hitches, these are available and can increase your tow up to 4,000 lbs.

Aside from it’s towing capacity, your Jeep’s payload rating is also an important factor to keep in mind.

The maximum payload capacity is the overall weight of everything in, or on, your Jeep, yes, this includes you. It means, the driver, passengers, fuel, a winch, skid plates, and anything else inside or outside the vehicle.

You should be able to find your Jeep’s payload rating on the driver’s side door, or the B;pillar. You should never tow if your payload exceeds the capacity of the vehicle.

Checking the trailer

Despite how your Jeep will do the most part of the work when you tow something. You need to ensure that your trailer is safe to pull.

This means checking for damage, or rust. Check especially thoroughly on the trailer base, including the axles, frame, and so on. You should also ensure that the exterior lights are working properly, especially brake lights and turn signal lights.

The trailer tires should also be in good condition, they should have plenty of tread so that they maintain good contact with the road when you are driving. You should also consider the GVWR of the trailer before you buy, since it will need to be light enough to meet the capacity for towing of your Jeep Wrangler.

When you calculate the amount you can pack and bring with you on your travels, be sure to account for around 10% of your trailer’s GVWR for additional payload, this means things like, clothes, gear, food and water, fuel and so on.

Your safety while driving

Your safety when you drive is imperative, this is why your ability to be able to drive with a heavy trailer in tow is important. Even if you have driven a vehicle with a trailer in tow before, you should go for a couple of small test drives beforehand, so that you get a feel for your Jeep and trailer maneuvers.

You need to feel comfortable with the extra length, the handling of sharp corners, reversing, and how your trailer will react when you reverse. Feeling comfortable with these things is very important to safe driving.

A useful trick is to steer in the opposite direction that you want the trailer to go when you reverse. Remember that any little changes in direction with the Jeep will result in a bigger change at the back of the trailer, regardless if it is big or small, long or short.

Is a Jeep Wrangler capable of towing like this?

Jeep Wranglers have an average maximum towing capacity of around 3,500 lbs, so this means that you can definitely tow more lightweight travel trailers. You should always consider the trailer’s gross vehicle weight ratings (or GVWR), and not the dry weight.

This is because GVWR takes into consideration the additional things you may have on board such as clothing, water, gear, gas and so on. And while these things may seem small, they all add up eventually.

In general, the kind of travel trailers that have this low of a GVWR will include pop-up trailers, teardrop, hybrid, and a few airstream trailers. So, you should look at your capacity and figure a maximum weight, then take a look at what trailers are the best option for you within the weight range.

What types of campers can you tow?

As previously mentioned, there are a few options that will be lightweight enough for you to be able to tow with your Jeep Wrangler. Let’s have a look at a few of the options that you will have suitable to this weight range.

Pop-up trailers

Pop-up trailers are campers that collapse as you travel. You can crank them up to full height with standing room inside once you are parked up at your campsite. These types of trailers have a few names, they are also called tent trailers, or fold-out campers.

The side walls of these trailers are often canvas, or other weather resistant materials, and this also means that these materials are much more lightweight than aluminum or fiberglass. This means they are a light-weight option too, so they are better for towing with a Jeep Wrangler.

Their bed areas are also slide out as well, so you can have everything you need in these trailers, including a kitchen and bathroom. How fancy!

The average GVWR for these types of trailers is between 600 and 2800 lbs.

Hybrid trailers

Hybrid trailers combine the design of a standard travel trailer and a pop-up trailer. They have hard sides, with pop out sleeping areas on either one end or both ends.

These pop-outs are typically canvas, or tent-style material, much like you would find with a pop-up trailer. However, hybrid trailers are more insulated and durable thanks to their hard side walls.

Sadly, this does mean that they tend to run a little more on the heavy side of things, and due to these heavier materials, you will need to get a lighter weight option if you are planning on towing it with a Jeep Wrangler. If you have a higher capacity, you could possibly get a higher weight, but you need to ensure that it is within the capacity of your vehicle.

These trailers are usually between 3,000 to 7,000 lbs.

Teardrop trailers

The teardrop trailer is a new addition to the mini trailer travel niche. It is literally a trailer, shaped like a teardrop. How quaint!

Inside this unique trailer type, there is generally only enough space for one room, for a bed. The back of the trailer will have a hatch that opens to cover your kitchen/ cooking area. On the odd occasion you may find that one of these may have an outdoor shower option.

These trailers will rarely have bathrooms or living areas, some of these might, you might have to look around hard to find one though.

Because they’re so tiny and compact, these trailers have an average GVWR of 500- 3,200 lbs. With the majority being 1,000 lbs.

Low weight air stream

If you like things the more ‘old school’ way, then you might like airstream trailers. Also known as silver bullet travel trailers, many people love them for their retro ambiance, as well as their design style and their durability.

Many of these travelers will be too heavy to tow with a Jeep Wrangler, however the ‘Airstream Sport 16RB’ is just tiny and lightweight enough, with a close GVWR of 3,500 lbs.

It is certainly cutting it a bit close to the towing capacity, however if you are an expert travel packer, with the ability to survive minimally, you can get away with it, and tow it with your Jeep Wrangler.

The bare minimum GVWR you will find in these trailers is 3,500 lbs.

Towing A Travel Trailer With A Jeep Wrangler: The Facts, Tips & Tricks 4

What do you need to tow?

If you are experienced at towing, you will know that you will need equipment to do so, if you are not experienced at doing this then listen closely.

The most basic equipment you will need to safely tow a travel trailer with any vehicle is a receiver hitch and a trailer wiring plug, this is so you can connect that rear brake and turn signal lights.

You will also need to have a hitch ball and a mount with a hitch pin that matches your trailer. You will also need to have safety chains that cross underneath the tongue to catch it, just in case the hitch fails.

Most aftermarket bumpers are equipped with a hitch receiver that will only be intended for things such as cargo, not for heavy travel trailers. This is why it is very important that your hitch receiver is rated for towing, don’t just get any old one. It should be Class II, or Class III designation, and your receiver should be 2 inches, not 1.25 inches, so that it can tolerate higher weights.

The weight capacities of the towing tongue and the hitch ball are also very important when you purchase and upgrade your towing equipment. While it can be tempting to pick up any old one and assume it will work, it just isn’t so easy.

The tongue should carry around 10% of the trailer’s GVWR, and absolutely no more than 15%. The rule of 10% is the same for the weight on the hitch ball, and you should be sure to load your trailer with a balanced weight distribution.

If you do not, you may be looking at a reduction in the performance when you travel at high speeds, or you may discover unsafe conditions, such as sudden movement to the left or to the left.

There are also a couple of other upgrades you could make that may be good to consider when you wish to tow a travel trailer with a Jeep Wrangler. For example, towing additional weight could possibly cause your Jeep to overheat, so it might be wise to upgrade your vehicle’s cooling system.

It might also be a good shout to upgrade the brake pads and rotors, especially if they are old. It is important that you ensure your vehicle is safe too when you tow, this is why it would not go amiss to look at sway control and brake controls for additional upgrades as well.

Pros of towing your trailer with a Jeep Wrangler

Jeep Wranglers are fantastic SUVs to own, regardless if you are simply driving around town, or if you are towing your trailer off on a nature venture, or an off-the-grid camping trip.

It has plenty of advantages, even though you can’t pull extremely heavy loads with it, it has plenty of benefits. Let’s take a moment to look at some of these.

  • Power and durability are plentiful here. Jeeps are designed to be top-notch sport utility vehicles, they are also made to be the perfect off-road hustler, which is just what you want when you are venturing off into the unknown with your trailer for a nature getaway. They handle beautifully in all types of weather, and provide all-terrain exploring opportunities, with stellar traction, brilliant articulation, and easy-peasy maneuverability. While a majority of Keeps have an average towing capacity of 3,500 lbs, some can pull as much as 5,000 lbs. So, the bigger the Jeep, the more you can tow, thus broadening your options for trailer size.
  • You also get increased ground clearance. This is because the cabin in a Jeep is higher than a majority of vehicles, including most other SUVs. They provide a height advantage and more visibility. Not only does this mean you can see further down the road, you can also pull your travel trailer into more rugged camping locations as well. Although this will only really work if your trailer also has a high enough clearance too. Keep in mind the ground clearance of your trailer, especially if it is much lower than your Jeep.
  • Improvement in gas mileage. In the times when you are not towing anything, you can expect to get 22 miles to the gallon in the city and around 29 miles to the gallon on the highway. Your gas mileage will be lower when you tow a travel trailer, or indeed anything, but this goes without saying really. When you are towing, your gas mileage will depend on your speed, but you could expect to get around 10 to 15 miles per gallon.
  • Enjoy a long lifespan. Many SUVs will have a lifespan of around 200,000 miles. However, Jeep Wranglers will typically double that, averaging at 400,000 miles. They have a V6 engine that is also one of the absolute best on the market and is exceptionally reliable. This means that you will be able to travel with your trailer in tow for miles and years into the future.
  • A Jeep offers uniqueness. One of the best things about a Jeep is its ability to take the top off, and enjoy the freeing feeling of the wind in your hair. There are also plenty of useful upgrades that you can make to your Jeep that make it easier and much more enjoyable to pull your travel trailer along with you on your journeys. Some of these epic upgrades include skid bars, winch mounts, LED headlights and so much more. You can go wild and add so many things, the sky’s the limit!

We found 9 great camper trailers you can tow with a Jeep Wrangler. If you own a Jeep Wrangler or are considering buying one, you will probably want to know how much your Jeep can tow. The 2024 Jeep Wrangler can tow up to 5000 pounds; however, up until 2024, 3500 pounds was the max.

Since most Jeep Wranglers can tow up to 3,500 lbs, we found 9 great campers that weigh well under that weight so you have extra cargo capacity in your camper for all of your supplies, water, gear, and whatever else you carry onboard your camper.

Read on to learn all about how much a Jeep Wrangler can tow safely and also our 9 best campers that a Jeep Wrangler can tow!

What is the Towing Capacity of a Jeep Wrangler?

The reality is that you should never tow the maximum capacity of 3,500 lbs. with your 4-door Jeep Wrangler. A 2 door Wrangler can only tow 2,000 lbs. A good rule of thumb that we recommend is that you never tow more than 80% of your tow vehicle’s maximum tow rating. Since a Jeep’s max tow rating is 3,500 we recommend that you don’t tow more than 2,800 lbs.

This means you will want to find a camper that weighs less than 2,000 lbs, so by the time you add all of your gear and supplies, its maximum weight will be no more than 2,800 lbs.

We carefully chose our 9 best campers for a Jeep Wrangle below with all of this in mind. So you have some really good and safe camper choices to tow behind your Jeep without destroying your Jeep’s transmission.

⛔ Can’t charge the batteries while running the A/C

  • Length: 15′ 2″
  • UVW: 1,488 lbs
  • CCC: Unlisted

The Plus S is the smallest model in the ultra-light travel trailer lineup that still includes a wet bath. In fact, you’ll be amazed at how much ProLite packs into the camper trailers while still maintaining a light profile for Jeep Wranglers and small SUVs.

The fuel economy is outstanding, thanks to the aerodynamic profile, and the interior contains everything you expect to find in a much larger travel trailer. The kitchen, dinette, bathroom, bed, fridge, cabinets, and more, are all present and accounted for.

The one-piece fiberglass roof is a nice touch as well, eliminating leaks. It’s hard to overstate how valuable that is when hitched to a vehicle that will put this little RV through its paces.

These Scamps are loaded with amenities, with wet baths, full kitchens, convertible dining/bedding, and surprising floor space.

⛔ Manual tongue jack on an Airstream at this price should be upgraded

  • Length: 16′ 2″
  • UVW: 2,650 lbs

  • GVWR: 3,500 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 410 lbs

The Basecamp comes in two floorplans, with the specs above coming from the Basecamp 16 and an additional Basecamp 20. There is also a Basecamp 20X and REI, but they’re more of a package than a separate entity. The Basecamps are exactly what they sound like—off-grid animals that thrive in the wilderness.

These single-axle camper trailers are fantastic options for a Jeep Wrangler and its off-roading capabilities. They come with 360W of solar on the roof, with an optional, dual-100-amp-hour battery setup, a rugged build, a reduced aerodynamic drag profile, and Goodyear Assurance tires.

Forest River Viking 1706XLS Exterior

✅ Excellent interior space, especially with the two double bunks extended

⛔ No bathroom at all

  • Length: 17′ 11″
  • UVW: 1,642 lbs
  • CCC: 1,255 lbs
  • GVWR: 2,897 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 167 lbs

The Forest River Viking 1706 XLS is one of those hybrid travel trailers/pop-ups that make the perfect camper trailers for lightweight towing vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler. The great thing about the pop-up is you get the traditional travel trailer with pop-up beds on either end that are highly functional and much cheaper than slides.

The drawback is the lack of a bathroom, something a composting toilet and an aftermarket exterior shower will solve. When the pop-up wings are up, the interior is spacious, with a full kitchen, storage capabilities, and dining accommodations.

It provides ample storage and lounging space and is a great accommodation for additional amenities, such as solar packages.

7. nuCamp Tab 400

nuCamp Tab 400 Exterior - camper trailers with Jeep Wranglers

✅ Excellent counter space for such a small interior

⛔ Exterior and interior storage isn’t very extensive

  • Length: 18′ 3″
  • UVW: 2,840 lbs
  • CCC: 1,060 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,900 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 318 lbs

The GVWR on the nuCamp Tab 400 camper trailers is a bit on the heavy side for a Jeep Wrangler. You can tow one based on its dry weight, but you have to be really careful how much weight you add to it. This is a massive teardrop with a full-fledged, traditional travel trailer look on the interior.

There’s counter space, a stovetop, a compact fridge, and a long L-shaped couch that converts into a bed for sleeping. The bathroom is a wet bath, but it’s large enough that you can move around from sink to shower.

The A/C is underneath the dinette, boosting the aerodynamic profile for easier towing. The Tab 400 is a fascinating teardrop with incredible staying power off the grid.

8. Meaner Bean

⛔ Some of the most exciting features are not standard

  • Length: 14′ 3″

The shell is a single-piece, marine-grade gel-coat structure over a powder-coated, steel tube frame. It can withstand a kick from Godzilla.

Its electrical system is robust and designed for off-grid living and boondocking. It comes with a 100-amp, deep cycle battery with a solar port, shore power connections, and a power converter.

It’s heavily insulated with scratch-resistant interior walls, recessed lighting, and a bed that takes up the entire space, though you can fold it into a dinette. If you want more space, you can add an optional rooftop tent as well.

9. Happier Camper Traveler

Happier Camper Traveler Exterior

✅ Massive carrying capacity

⛔ Awning, solar panels, sound system, lithium batteries, and power inverter are upgrades only

  • Length: 13′ 5″
  • UVW: 1,500 lbs
  • CCC: 2,000 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 110 lbs

The best feature of the Happier Camper , besides its towability, is the unique interior Adaptive system. It’s essentially a modular configuration of your own design. As the Happy Camper is in the manufacturing process, you can pick and choose what you want inside to a large degree.

This allows you an immense amount of customization on the fly. Whatever interior arrangement you need throughout the day is doable. The blocks of the Adaptive system fit into a flooring grid.

It’s a neat arrangement that you’ll quickly adapt to (pun intended). It’s also lightweight and built similar to Scamps, Olivers, Escapes, and Casitas.

Are Jeep Cherokees Better For Towing Than Jeep Wranglers?

While looking for camper trailers for a Jeep Wrangler, it’s easy to forget that there are other Jeep models out there as well. What about the Jeep Cherokee? The newest Cherokee is capable of towing 4,500 lbs, half a ton more than the best trim the Wrangler has to offer.

However, towing capabilities and off-roading don’t always come together. Sure, a Cherokee can haul more, but if you’re looking at camper trailers for a Jeep Wrangler, the odds are good you’re looking to head out to places where paved roads are the exceptions to the rule.

Whether or not you want to opt for a little more towing power, the Wrangler is the clear winner in off-grid living and hardcore boondocking, while the Cherokee will haul more for a traditional camping style.

Can I Tow a Folding Tent Camper with a Jeep Wrangler?

One thing is for sure, when looking to tow a folding tent camper trailer behind your Jeep Wrangler, you have to decide between a soft wall and a hard wall unit. What is the difference, and why is it important to know this information?

Here’s why:

1️⃣ Hard wall camper trailers provide added security from people and animals while providing additional shelter from the weather. This is a pretty popular option for a lot of outdoor enthusiasts.

However, the heavier hard walls add additional weight to the camper trailer, so it may limit the options for Jeep Wrangler owners.

2️⃣ Lighter weight A-frame camper trailers may be a good hard wall option for you. Also, teardrop and hybrid travel trailers are good options for campers towing with a Jeep Wrangler.

3️⃣ Last but not least, soft wall or tent-type walls are very lightweight and a great option for small towing capacity vehicles. They get you off the cold hard ground and are an affordable and lightweight option for your Jeep Wrangler.

Of course, you will have to give up some amenities for this soft wall camper trailer option!

What size travel trailer can a Jeep Wrangler pull?

When shopping for a travel trailer, you need to take into account the towing capacity of your vehicle. The towing capacity is the amount of weight your vehicle can safely tow. If you exceed the towing capacity, you risk damaging your vehicle and endangering yourself and others on the road.

So, what size travel trailer can a Jeep Wrangler pull? Jeep Wranglers can typically tow between 2,000 and 3,500 pounds. This means that it is capable of towing a wide variety of trailers, including pop-ups, hybrids, Airstreams, and even teardrops. As I mentioned before, Jeep Wranglers are generally quite sturdy, but there is a limit to how much weight they can carry.

How big of a camper can I pull with a Jeep?

Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a first-time RVer, one of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make is what kind of RV you want to buy. Travel trailers come in all shapes and sizes, and it can be tough to decide which one is right for you. But once you’ve narrowed down your options, you’ll need to figure out which tow vehicle is up to the task.

If you’re looking for a tow vehicle that can handle a travel trailer, a Jeep is a great option. But how big of a camper can you pull with a Jeep? While Jeep Wranglers have a maximum tow rating of 3,500 pounds, we advise not towing more than 2,800 . You should look for a camper that tips the scales at under 2,000 pounds, so that after you load it up with all of your supplies and gear, its total weight doesn’t go over 2,800 pounds.

What Jeep has the best towing capacity?

Today, more and more people are choosing to hit the open road in an RV or travel trailer. And for good reason! Traveling in an RV is a great way to see the country and spend time with family and friends. But before you can hit the open road, you need to choose the right RV or travel trailer for your needs – and that includes considering the towing capacity of your vehicle.

The Jeep Gladiator has the highest towing capacity of any Jeep vehicle because it is the largest and most powerful model in the Jeep family. With its powerful towing capacity, the Gladiator can haul up to 7,650 pounds.

Jeep Wranglers are ideal vehicles for those who seek adventure. They’re strong, compact, and can hold a lot of people and equipment. However, there are a few things to consider if you intend to tow a travel trailer with this vehicle.

To begin with, even though these vehicles are powerful for their size, they cannot tow travel trailers weighing more than their maximum towing capacity. (The maximum tow capacity is a measurement that describes the maximum amount of weight that any given vehicle can tow behind it.)

Jeep Wranglers have maximum towing capacities ranging from 2,000 to 3,500 lbs. This measurement will vary depending on your car’s model, year, and any special modifications.

To determine your Jeep Wrangler’s towing capacity, consult your owner’s manual or an online database. Rvcampingworld.com has a fantastic website where people can check their towing capacities. You can look up the specifications of your vehicle by visiting their website here.

However, just because your towing capacity is lower with a Wrangler doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the benefits of a travel trailer! There are numerous lightweight models available that can be towed by vehicles with towing capacities of less than 3,500 lbs. Some are plain and simple, while others are completely decked out!

Follow along as we take a look at 9 of the best Jeep Wrangler travel trailers. The following list is sorted by weight, from lightest to heaviest.

What’s the Best Travel Trailer For a Jeep Wrangler?

Published on September 26th, 2019 by Ray & Tammy Roman This post was updated on January 26th, 2023

Most big RVs just aren’t made for remote, off-road boondocking. Small campers, however, do the job just fine. Our list of the best travel trailers for a Jeep Wrangler will make you want to rough it in luxury.

best travel trailer for jeep wrangler

Why Tow a Small Camper with a Jeep Wrangler?

Many ultralight trailers can be towed with passenger cars. One of the best cars for towing a camper is the Jeep Wrangler. It’s one of the most popular 4×4 SUVs on the market and with good reason. The Wrangler easily handles rough terrain, slick roads, and steep inclines. It’s also a more affordable tow vehicle for small trailers compared to the cost of light trucks.

The 2-door Jeep Wrangler starts at $30,295 for the Sport trim and $33,000 for the Willys Sport trim. The more feature-rich Sport S trim starts at $33,890, while the Willys model begins at $37,285. The rugged Rubicon model starts at $42,100. DON’T MISS OUT ON RV LIVING UPDATES Sign up for the newsletter today! Please enter a valid email address. An error occurred. How Much Can a Jeep Wrangler tow?

The towing capacity of a Jeep Wrangler varies from 2,000- to 3,500 pounds depending on the Wrangler model. For example:

  • The 2-door Jeep Wrangler Sport has a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds, and the 4-door Jeep Wrangler Sport can tow up to 3,500 pounds. A Jeep Wrangler 2-door Sport comes with a 3.6 L engine. It has a manual transmission and also has a 3.21 axle ratio. It has a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds.
  • If you buy a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that has four doors and a 3.6 L engine, you can tow a camper up to 3,500 pounds. This model has an optional automatic transmission and an axle ratio of 3.73.

Locate a Jeep Wrangler Service Manual for your model to help you know exactly how much your Jeep can tow.

We try to keep our camper and cargo weights within 60%-70% of towing capacity for our Jeep Wrangler. For example, 60- to 70-percent of 3,500 pounds on a Jeep Unlimited would be 2,100- to 2450-pounds. That means your travel trailer’s fully gross vehicle weight should be around that much.

Remember, be kind to your Jeep transmission. Even though your Jeep is rated for the maximum weight, picking up highway speed on merges or going uphill can be a struggle when your GVWR is maxed out. This must be considered so that your Jeep Wrangler is within safe towing limits.

Final Thoughts on Travel Trailers for Jeep Wranglers

These campers are just a few examples of the many travel trailers that a Jeep Wrangler can tow. Look around and you’ll also find a good selection of teardrop travel trailers that a 2-door Jeep Wrangler can tow.

The most important thing to remember when deciding which travel trailer to tow with your Jeep is to always stay at about 65-70% of towing capacity. Staying in this range will give you some reserve power to merge safely and deal with inclines. And you will also preserve your Jeep transmission for many years of off-road camping.

5 RV Trailers That Can Be Towed With A Jeep

By: Author The Drivin' & Vibin' Team

Posted on September 20, 2020

To many, the Jeep seems like the perfect camping vehicle. What kind of RV trailers can be towed with a Jeep? Can a Jeep Wrangler even pull an RV?

It sure can- if you choose the right trailer and are aware of the limitations.  There’s a lot to know about the Jeep and the camper to make sure you have a successful camping experience.

Things To Know For Pulling A Camper With A Jeep

The towing capacity of Jeeps vary based on the engine, transmission and axle ratio.

Most Jeeps can tow between 2000-3500 lbs with a tongue weight of between 200-350 lbs respectively.  Newer Jeep models can tow more. Older manual models, with the smaller axle ratio, can tow less.

And in addition to the towing capacity, it’s important to consider the vehicle’s payload capacity as well.  Your own Jeep’s payload rating should be listed on the driver’s side door.

Keep in mind : you need to verify your Jeep’s towing capacity before choosing one of these RV campers to tow.

What Types of Trailers Can Be Towed With A Jeep?

Jeeps can tow all types of campers from pop-ups , tear drops, and hybrids, to small travel trailers.  Here’s a quick roundup of 5 RV Trailers that can be towed with a Jeep.

Scamp 16’ Travel Trailer

Layouts 6 and 7 on the Standard Scamp 16’ have a cute little 2 person dinette.

In fact, many molded fiberglass campers fall within Jeeps’s tow rating specs.

  • Weight: Vehicle weight 2,000 lbs, GVWR 2,700 lbs

Best Travel Trailers for Jeep Wranglers

Looking for a Jeep Wrangler trailer - a camper that you can easily tow with your prized possession? There are many to choose from.

Jeep Wranglers are among the toughest type of land vehicles, and have earned their reputation due to the extreme performance on all types of terrains. From sloppy hills to harsh sandy desserts, thick forests, or a straight road, Jeep Wranglers can move everywhere.

This is why they make an excellent choice of vehicle for towing a trailer. But what are the best travel trailers for your jeep Wrangler?

In this article, we look at some of the best models on the market, that you can easily tow with your Jeep Wrangler. As well as reviewing specific models we've included a guide for what makes a trailer ideal for being towed by a Jee Wrangler.

There's also an FAQ section to round things up so you should be well equipped with all the knowledge you'll need for when you go shopping for your trailer.

Jeep Wrangle and E-Pro trailer

Ground Clearance

Ground clearance is another very important consideration, especially when intended for a trip along rocky pathways. Higher ground clearance is always advisable to prevent the floor of the trailer bumping into rocks scattered throughout the path. These rocks can be sharp and large and can do serious damage, so a clearance of at least around 15-16” is important.

Jeep Wrangler Trailers FAQs

Deciding on one travel trailer is no easy business. There are a lot of questions that may arise regarding them. These might not be answered in the above discussion but are similarly important. In this section, we answer some of the most sought-after questions to give you a deeper understanding of the matter.

Can a Jeep Wrangler Pull a Travel Trailer?

Yes, a Jeep Wrangler can pull a travel trailer as long as it weighs within 4000lbs. of weight. But this is not the dry weight; rather, it is the total loaded weight resulting after all of your supplies are placed on board. Larger travel trailers housing heavy equipment are not towable by jeep wrangler and put a strain on it, which might result in problems midway.

Can a Jeep Wrangler Pull 5000 Pounds?

No, the maximum total towing capacity for a regular jeep wrangler is within 4000lbs. Any trailer exceeding this value is not advisable to be towed by a jeep wrangler as it would not only put a strain on the engine but would also result in poor utilization of fuel.

jeep wrangler and trailer

Why is Jeep Wrangler Towing Capacity so Low?

Jeep Wranglers are a sturdy ride, but they have certain features that limit their towing capacity. These include springs not build for very rough use, such as Marshmallow springs.

Marshmallow springs can endure harshness up to a certain level but not for extreme supporting and pulling use. Moreover, jeep wranglers have mediocre brakes. While these suffice for traveling through sloppy hails and slippery lands or sandy desserts, they can only support the weight up to a certain extent.

Can You Increase the Towing Capacity of a Jeep Wrangler?

The towing capacity of jeep wranglers cannot be extended. This is because the limitations are related to the structure and durability of the engine. The engines can support the load up to some extent. For higher towing capacity, either specialized jeeps are used, or heavier vehicles are employed.

Do All Jeep Wranglers Come With a Hitch?

No, not all jeep wranglers come with a hitch. A hitch is crucial for connecting the trailer to the jeep wrangler. For those jeep models that do not come with a hitch, a receiver hitch could be attached to the jeep to enhance its versatility. The hitches are easily available on the market, and an appointment with a good mechanic is all that is needed to set you up.

Travel Trailers for Jeep Wranglers - Getting Into Places Others Can't

Jeep Wranglers are a popular option for towing trailers. Their off-road capabilities and towing capacity make them ideal for towing your trailer and getting off into the wild.

All of the above are great trailers and will do the trick for you on your road trips. Of course, size is a premium, so depending on the type of base you want for your trips, will determine the trailer you go for.

That said, we're sure whichever trailer you go for, the life experiences you'll gain from your new home on wheels will be amazing. Enjoy!

If it is only a 2,000 lbs towing capacity that is going to be tough when looking at travel trailers. My jeep has a 2,000 lbs limit and trying to find a trailer that was small enough and light enough that offered the amenities my wife was looking for proved extremely difficult.

I understand that on a personal level! Haha options are limited especially options with a bathroom.

Bathrooms in small trailers are extremely hard. Pop-ups tend to be the best at accomplishing that. What kind of trailer are you looking for? Did you check to see what gear ratio you have yet?

I’m currently looking at a 2018 Cherokee wolf pup16FQ. It’s right under 3000lbs dry weight. I have not been able to find what gear ratio. I did attach some screen shots of what I have found, you’re welcome to look at them! May be able to understand them better then I.

I believe there is also a limitation on the frontal area of the trailer that needs to be considered. That should also be in the user manual.

I would not recommend towing that with your Jeep. The dry weight may be under, but you will want to load water and then things like food, camping gear, it all adds up. Is also says it has a tongue weight of 450#, which may not break the Jeep hitch, will put more on the rear suspension than you will want. A weight distribution hitch can help, but I would not suggest this trailer for you Jeep, especially if you are new to towing. You also need to check that you have the gear ratio that will allow you to 3500#.

Here’s what I found

Font Material property Parallel Number Document

You have 3.73 its called rear axle ratio. It is listed under optional equipment because you have the max tow package. So you should have 3500# towing

Also something else to consider, I only see a 4 pin connector listed, no 7 pin. That is not the end of the world but you would need to get that and a trailer brake installed if you were going to tow something like a travel trailer. They are not too expensive to have someone do it but until they are done do not expect to buy something and be able to tow it home. At least not the ones you have listed above.

Soo helpful! Thank you

Where do you live? The Jeep's ability to safely and adequately tow will be somewhat dependent on the terrain that you will travel....I live in Colorado, pull a 1200 lb teardrop and currently have 4.10 axle gears.........barely adequate for my area, 4.88s are on the wish list. Elevation and hills to climb as well as how fast you hope to travel are things to consider.

Oklahoma and it’ll be pavement. Not many mountains here unfortunately haha. I believe it’s 3.73 axle gears.

The Clipper is better, but still not great. The Luna and Escape are better. I get cost is a thing, but so is safety. Cheap, boxy trailers are just too much for the Jeep suspension. That is why the manual says 35sqft frontal area. The aerodynamics of the Luna and Escape help to reduce the drag and side-wind the limit was intended to fight. As mentioned, you will also need a 7-pin harness kit such as this: https://a.co/d/3UQWkhM And then you will need a brake controller, either wired or wireless: https://a.co/d/2Ab0LBb https://a.co/d/8jOTz2i

One thing to consider and it can be a bit more expensive but you can get an RV and flat tow the Jeep. This gives you the ability to have water and bathrooms and all the amenities you may want. I was not able to find something that my wife was happy with so we ended up getting an RV to tow the Jeep.

Years ago I learned just how much work it can be if you buy a trailer within mfg weight limits, add your gear and head for the hills (mountains). It’s not fun when your pulling the guts out of it going up and the tranny screaming and smoking brakes coming down and trying to watch the road at the same time you watch the gauges run hot. I’ve towed campers, dump trailers, utility trailers, and a 20’ enclosed car hauler, but not with a Jeep. I want a lot of margin on towing capacity, not just for pulling but for handling in wind and traffic, braking, etc. I’ve been towing and hauling stuff for 50 years. If the mfg says I can tow 3500 I’m gonna stay around 2000-2500 max.

IMHO this cannot be repeated enough in these towing threads and I also feel that manufacturers should be forced to change their ratings to reflect that . I live in a huge tourist area and it is amazing what I see towing what each year. Just because you can pull it, doesn't mean you can stop or maneuver it .

^ that's good advice!

That was my only hangup with my 2015 Wrangler was towing my travel trailer, or the inability to. I always had my brother and his truck take the travel trailer to where I needed it to be, and it was only 15 feet and 3,000 lbs dry. But you load water, propane tanks, food and camping equipment in there, and you're at your limit ... if not over for me. So I bought a Gladiator.

Choosing The Best Travel Trailer For Jeep Wrangler

Pairing a travel trailer with a Jeep Wrangler will enable you to have a mobile home wherever you go and be comfortable even while spending long periods of time camping in remote places. However, there are a number of factors you need to consider before buying a travel trailer since Jeep Wrangler models cannot pull all travel trailers you can find on the market.

Let’s take a look at how you can determine if a travel trailer is a good fit for your Jeep Wrangler or follow this link to find out if a truck camper or travel trailer is the best option for you.

Check The Towing Capacity

Despite having incredibly strong engines Jeep Wrangler models have their towing limitations, which means that you have to check the travel trailer’s weight before you rent or buy.

The towing capacity of Jeep Wrangler models varies between 2000lbs and 4000lbs and you’ll need to check the vehicle’s manual in order to find its exact towing capacity.

Although Jeep Wranglers can pull weight that exceeds their maximum towing capacities on highways, you may get stuck in the mud or have difficulties going uphill if you go off-road with an overloaded vehicle. You won’t experience any of these problems if you opt for a travel trailer that fits your Jeep Wrangler’s towing capacity. You can find some of the best bunkhouse travel trailer options, here .

Consider The Design Of The Travel Trailer

Besides the weight of a travel trailer, its design can also have a major impact on how smoothly your Jeep Wrangler can move on and off the road.

Teardrop , hybrid, and pop up trailers as well as the iconic Airstream trailers have the best design features that reduce air resistance and make good use of the space. Moreover, none of these travel trailers include heavy equipment that adds to their weight so that your vehicle can move smoothly regardless of the terrain you are driving through.

Furthermore, the position of the kitchen or the beds is also worth considering since their accessibility can make your camping experiences more pleasant.

Search For Travel Trailers That Have Active Brake Controllers And Sway Control

Safety is probably the best guiding principle you can have while searching for new travel trailers for your Jeep Wrangler. That’s why it is advisable to look into the trailer’s sway control and brake controller features before you decide to buy it.

Environmental factors like strong wind can sway both your vehicle and travel trailers and cause a serious accident. That’s why you should search for a travel trailer model that has powerful sway control features and is capable of resisting strong gusts of wind without any risk of swaying.

In addition, being able to control the trailer’s braking system from your vehicle and stop it as soon as you hit the brake pad will increase your safety significantly.

Furthermore, the travel trailer’s braking system can prevent it from hitting the vehicle while you are descending down a steep road. Click here if you want to find the best weight distribution hitch with sway control.

Beware Of Overloading

Overloading your Jeep Wrangler isn’t something you should do lightly, because you might end up breaking the weight distribution hatch and causing a serious accident.

In addition to the travel trailer’s weight, you should also factor in the weight of the things you will be carrying in your trailer.

Avoid transporting heavy equipment in your trailer if the trailer’s weight is close to the vehicle’s maximum towing capacity because you may end up accidentally overloading it without even realizing it. Make sure to check out our ultimate guide to RV accessories and upgrades .

Check The Floor’s Distance From The Ground

Even though this may seem like an obvious thing to do, it cannot be stressed enough how important it is to check the travel trailer’s ground clearance. The general rule of thumb is the further the floor is from the ground, the better because it eliminates any chance of damage caused by sharp rocks you drive across.

Opting for a travel trailer that has 15’’ or 16’’ of ground clearance is advisable because it is highly unlikely that rocks can damage the floor at that distance from the ground.

The Andersen Hitches Review That You’ll Love

One of the key questions I had to answer when deciding to travel full-time was, “What type of RV am I going to buy?” This is important for several reasons because it dictates your choice of vehicle. If you get a motorhome, you can tow it and get a small sedan or SUV.

If you go with a travel trailer, you can probably get by with a smaller truck like a Ford F150. But if you choose a fifth wheel, you have to have something capable of pulling it. Not only that, but you have to have a hitch that can handle the payload.

Most people choose to go with a standard fifth wheel hitch. This involves backing up the vehicle until the fifth wheel’s tongue snaps into place inside the receiver. But Andersen Hitch has changed the way people think about pulling the fifth wheel.

Is an Andersen hitch right for everyone? Probably not. But this innovative company has created a hitch that redefines the way RV travelers pull their campers. Keep reading t
