Your Guide To Flying With Jetstar
Tom Goward | 27/01/2021
Jetstar Airways is a fully owned subsidiary of Qantas, who created the airline in 2003 as part of a two-brand strategy in response to the threat posed by Virgin Blue (now Virgin Australia). The master plan was to position Jetstar for the low-cost market, leaving Qantas to take on the premium full-service sector. Nowadays, Jetstar is one of the world’s most successful value-based airlines, and is currently Australia’s only major low-cost carrier after Tigerair’s demise in late 2020.
Tip: check out our guide on the Jetstar price beat guarantee to save on your next flight!
Jetstar is unquestionably a “you get what you pay for” airline. Put simply, customers who expect Jetstar to offer the same service as parent airline Qantas are not choosing Jetstar for the right reasons. Jetstar is a good option for those who want to get to their destination for as little as possible, and don’t mind skipping some of the benefits to save a buck.
In this post:
Airbus A320/A321
Boeing 787-8, economy bundles, business bundles, booking jetstar flights through qantas, food & beverage, inflight entertainment, earning qantas points/status credits, booking jetstar flights with qantas points, jetstar’s price beat guarantee, the jetstar fleet.
According to Planespotters.net , Jetstar currently holds a fleet of 68 aircraft with an average aircraft age of 10.3 years.
Jetstar Airways has 49 Airbus A320 aircraft and 8 Airbus A321 aircraft in their fleet. You can expect to fly on these aircraft on domestic routes, as well as some shorter international flights, with the larger A321 used on flights with increased demand. Each aircraft is configured in a 3-3 all-economy layout, with 180 seats on the A320 and 220 to 230 on the A321.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is Jetstar’s most modern aircraft, with the first of the type delivered to the airline in 2013. The Boeing 787 features state-of-the-art technology to improve passenger comfort and fatigue, including cabin pressurisation that is 2000ft lower than traditional aircraft and improved cabin humidity. Jetstar’s 11 Boeing 787 aircraft operate on long-haul international routes, configured with 21 seats in a 2-3-2 layout in Business, and 314 seats in a 3-3-3 layout in Economy.
Fare types and bundles
Normally you can only add bundles to your fare at the time of booking directly through Jetstar’s website. The cost of each bundle will differ based on the length of each flight, and can sometimes cost more than adding items such as checked baggage and meals individually.
There are six main Jetstar fare types:
- Starter – base fare
- Flex – designed for business travellers
- Plus – designed for general travellers
- Max – for maximum extras
- Business – base business class fare
- Business Max – a business class fare with the lot
Jetstar often cost more when booked through the Qantas website, even with all the trimmings added. However, sometimes it may be your only option for a connecting flight. If you book a Jetstar flight through Qantas’ website, you will get a choice between a Starter or Max fare.
Please note that the COVID-19 pandemic may result in slightly different fare policies, including waived change fees on some bookings.
As with most low-cost airlines, Jetstar does not provide complimentary food and drink. Instead, you have the option to purchase items online before your flight or from the onboard menu. If you selected a Plus or Max bundle, or you are travelling in Business, food and beverage is included in the ticket price.
Note that Jetstar only accepts card payment onboard.
Jetstar does not provide inflight entertainment on all domestic flights. On international flights operated by B787 aircraft, you will have the option to pay extra for inflight entertainment.
As part of the Qantas Group, you can earn Qantas Points and Status Credits when flying with Jetstar. To earn Qantas Points and Status Credits you must purchase either the Plus, Max or Business Max bundle.
Want to know more? Check out our guide here !
Jetstar award redemptions cost 20% less points than Qantas award redemptions. The best way to book award redemptions with Jetstar is on the Qantas website.
You can also use “points plus pay” on the Jetstar or Qantas website (just before payment) however, this is likely to cost more than a standard redemption.
If you are searching for the cheapest flight available, Jetstar’s Price Beat Guarantee is a great way to book some seriously cheap flights. The Price Beat Guarantee works a bit like Bunnings. If you find a cheaper flight with either another airline or a Jetstar flight on an eligible third party website, Jetstar will beat it by 10%.
Note that Price Beat bookings are always Economy Starter fares, although you do have the option of adding extras such as checked baggage and seat selection. You can’t add a bundle to a price beat booking.
Jetstar can be a great option for travellers who want to get to their destination for the lowest price possible. I have never had a bad experience when I have chosen to fly with Jetstar, although there are some horror stories out there.
Chief Operating Officer & Aviation Nerd at Flight Hacks
I think the move by Jetstar to not even give a cup of tea, and charge for entertainment is a greedy policy. They try to cover it up by saying: You only have to pay for what you want: That is BS. Jetstar is just trying to recoup what they lost in the lockdown. Jetstar has not lowered its price and is just charging for something we got as part of the flight. If you can’t afford entertainment you have to sit for over 2 hrs doing nothing. I have bad eyesight, I can’t read anymore, and as I am paying for all 4 of our group itsw just not worth being loyal to Jetstar.
When you say “just” that much it opens up eyes and speaks volumes about you. As the useless say: “just saying”.

Jetstar transit through Singapore
Post-Covid transit through Singapore, one of the region’s busiest airline hubs, is well organised as testified by a number of travellers who have reported their experience to Economy Traveller, including this couple who passed through in July 2020. Transit was only available on Singapore Airlines flights at the time and this has only recently been expanded to include the additional airlines.
There are a number of conditions you must keep in mind:
- Book the full journey on one booking
- (restrictions may apply)
Transit passengers must adhere to the following measures:
- For more information, refer to Travellers to Singapore travel alert.
- This allows easy identification by the airport and airline staff
- On board, transit passengers will be seated at the front of the aircraft and will disembark first
- On arrival in Singapore, all transit passengers will be met by airport staff and guided to a Transit Holding Area or Transit Hotel
- Transit passengers with a tight connection time will be ushered to the departure gate directly
- They will board the aircraft after all other passengers
Please note while in Singapore, all travellers are required to wear a mask at all times and practice social distancing. These measures are in line with government regulations and enhance Jetstar Asia’s Fly Well program. For more information, visit the Fly Well page .

Jetstar Airways Flight Status Updates
Staying updated with the status of your flight is essential to ensure a smooth and stress-free travel experience. Whether you are a frequent flyer or an occasional traveler, knowing the current status of your flight can help you plan your journey better and avoid any last-minute surprises.
Jetstar Airways understands the importance of providing real-time flight status updates to its passengers. With various methods available, Jetstar Airways ensures that passengers can easily access the most up-to-date information about their flights.
One of the most convenient ways to check the flight status is through Jetstar Airways' official website. By visiting the website and navigating to the "Flight Status" section, passengers can enter their flight details and instantly get the latest information about their flight's departure time, arrival time, and any delays or cancellations.
For those who prefer to access flight status information on the go, Jetstar Airways offers a mobile app that provides real-time updates. The app allows passengers to not only check the status of their flights but also receive important notifications about any changes or disruptions. With the app, passengers can stay informed and make necessary adjustments to their travel plans accordingly.
In addition to online methods, Jetstar Airways also provides flight status updates through Flight Information Display Systems (FIDs) at airports. These FIDs are strategically placed throughout the airport and display real-time information about flight departures, arrivals, and any changes in schedules. Passengers can easily locate the FIDs and quickly check the status of their flights without the need for any digital devices.
By staying updated with the flight status, passengers can save time and avoid unnecessary stress. They can plan their arrival at the airport accordingly, knowing if there are any delays or cancellations. Additionally, staying informed about any changes in the flight schedule allows passengers to make alternative arrangements if needed, such as rebooking connecting flights or notifying their loved ones about any delays.

Aussie‘s hilarious behind-the-scenes TikTok of Jetstar’s new ad
Jetstar has revealed its new TV ad and an Aussie TikTok star who features in it has shared a hilarious behind-the-scenes clip that’s now gone viral.
Virgin suspends flights to this major hotspot
Airline asks passengers to BYO cutlery
Major airline to end services at four airports
Jetstar has remade its iconic ad ‘Let’s Fly Jetstar’ that first hit TV screens across the country 20 years ago.
The ad featured Aussie actress Magda Szubanski and while she sadly isn’t in the newly-created version, it instead features some of Jetstar’s crew along with selected customers who won a competition with their real-life stories adapted into the advert.
In March, the airline announced a “casting call”, inviting customers to submit their favourite Jetstar travel stories from the past two decades.
More than 400 people from across Australia entered and three winners were chosen to star in the advert.
It comes as the airline celebrates its 20th anniversary in May.
Father and daughter, Tony and Jade Neal from Cameron Park outside Newcastle were passengers on the very first Jetstar flight from Newcastle to Melbourne on May 25, 2004 and were selected to take part in filming.
Jade was just two years old when the airline launched and appears in the ad as a 22-year-old. Her mother collected photos, newspaper clippings and other mementos from the historic day in 2004, which were shared with the crew during filming.
“It made me feel so special to be a part of such an awesome experience,” Jade said
“I appreciate all the effort that was put into making us all feel comfortable and welcome.”
Mr Neal said he was buzzing with excitement after travelling to Sydney to film the ad with his daughter.
“Being given the opportunity to participate in the Jetstar commercial was so exciting,” he said.
“It brought back fond memories from our first flight 20 years ago – memories that I will never forget. Experiencing this with Jade who was also with me on the first flight was a fantastic time and one I will.”
The ad also featured Aussie TikTok stars ‘Luke and Sassy Scott’ who were very excited to be featured in the advert – more so Scott who believed he was more than an extra.
They shared a hilarious behind-the-scenes clip that has attracted almost 1 million views of Scott being very sassy.
“Scott you’re an extra … where’s your bag … go get your bag,” Luke asks his brother before Scott points to a woman carrying it for him.
“No, I have to eat, it’s a long day on set.”
Meanwhile, Jetstar’s executive manager of customer service, Jenn Armor, said they wanted to create something that celebrates the people who have made Jetstar what it is today.
“From taking their first flight with Jetstar at age 90, to meeting the love of their life on board; it was such a privilege to read through all our customers’ stories,” she said.
“[Having] so many customers share their favourite memories of flying with us is a wonderful birthday gift.”
Jetstar first took to the skies in 2004 and has since flown more than 400 million customers across its domestic and international network.
And while it has battled with on-time flight performance and cancellations, recent figures reveal the budget airline has pushed forward.
According to the latest figures from the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE), released on Tuesday, more than 80 per cent of Jetstar’s domestic flights arrived on time and 78.3 per cent departed on schedule in March.
Its cancellation rate also dropped to 1.5 per cent, marking the airline’s lowest cancellation rate in almost five years and highest on time arrival rate in more than two years.
During the month Jetstar operated over 7200 flights serving more than 20 destinations across its Australian domestic network.
Qantas, which includes Qantas and QantasLink, also had a strong performance in March with 78.2 per cent of its flights departing on time.
More Coverage
“While these are strong results, we remain focused on further improving our operations and delivering a safe and reliable service for our customers every time they fly with us,” Jetstar’s chief operating officer, Matt Franzi, said.
“We’ve been working incredibly hard in recent months to better prepare for when things don’t go to plan, and it shows in these latest performance figures.
“Bad weather, air traffic control restrictions and unexpected aircraft maintenance can all cause problems with getting flights away on time, so the job is never done for our teams.”
Virgin Australia has suspend its direct service from this Aussie city to Bali after a delay in the delivery of 10 new Boeing planes.
A major five-star airline has asked business class passengers whether they would be happy to bring their own cutlery aboard its aircraft.
Aussies will have to consider alternative airlines when flying between US states after one of the country’s major carriers decided to cut services.

What a great question Courtney! I highly suggest going in October! Great weather this time of year.
September, I guess (because of the weather and the City Day).
October to me is iffy...the later, the worse...also, keep in mind that days are ever shorter the later you go...I prefer September, and agree if you can hit city day, even better!
Vote for September, too :))
But beware crowded airports - school starts Spt 1
