DIY Denim bags from old jeans: 3 easy to make ideas
Making bags from old jeans – This is one DIY project that appeals to those of us who hoard old jeans. There so many old jeans in my cupboard belonging to all four of us in our family- some torn in all the wrong places, some not fitting anymore in girth, some too short, some not fashionable enough. All of them waiting for some easy recycling ideas – to be made into new and beautiful denim bags.
When I thought about recycling my jeans into bags I dug into Pinterest and when I came up my head literally buzzed with so many ideas. But there is only so much time. So I decided to make only three from those ideas with two from my pile of jeans and at the end of it, there is still fabric enough to make many more jean bags. Another day another project.
One advantage of a jean bag is that you do not have to care about your perfect stitching skills – the rugged look of the jeans fabric take care of all that. Then the seam stitching on the jeans is an added charm. You also get a readymade top edge if we use the hem or the waistband as the upper edge. You do not have to worry about interfacing as denim fabric is thick enough.
Table of Contents
How to make jeans bag at home
1. a sling bag from old denim.
Take your jeans and keep it folded with the zipper opening of the pant on one side. Mark a rectangle shape from the top edge – it will be slightly diagonal extending to the crotch level.
Keep it together right sides to the inside and stitch the sides and the bottom edges. When stitching with a home sewing machine start stitching from the belt side (thicker area) and go down – the stitching will be easier otherwise the presser foot will refuse to ride up the thicker level.
For the Strap cut out the seam of the legs of both the legs very close to the stitching
After determining that the length is alright Join together keeping one edge on top of the other and making an x stitch.
The size of the bag will depend on the size of the jeans. As I made it with kids’ old jeans this is not a big bag – just enough to carry small books and your favourite DVD. Add velcro strips to the inside of the top edge if you want closure there
Update : The seam handles do fray a lot – so if you do not like the thread-standing-on-end look, use fray check on the sides of the strap, as soon as you have cut it out. You have the option of using other easy handles like ribbon, webbing etc. Check out this post on the 18 different types of bag handles you can use
2. Old jeans bag with another fabric
You can combine upholstery material or interfaced dressmaking materials with denim from old jeans to make your bag more interesting.
Cut out the leg portion of the jeans for this and cut it open on one side seam
Join the other fabric to the cut open edge ( the hem will be the upper edge of your bag)
Make straps from the upholstery fabric – just cut out the length you want and width you want and turn under the side edges to the inside and top stitch on either side.
You can also do some embroidery or applique on the denim at this point to match the fabric.
Cut out small hexagonal shaped denim tab pieces to cover the strap stitching. Stitch in place
If you wish to add a lining to this bag, make a smaller lining bag of the same shape, with some extra for the top edge; finish the band and hem its upper edge; You can add snaps or velcro as opening to the lining bag at this point
Keep the lining bag to the inside of the finished bag and then hand stitch the lining bag top edge to the main bag hem.
A similar bag made with jeans leg.
3. A simple Jean bag
To use the front portion of the jeans as it is, is a simple plan for the bag. You just need to stitch the bottom edge to make this bag. But there is a problem – the front crotch seam is curved. You will have to open it up and straighten it – but that is easy – the same way that you would do it for a jean skirt project . Infact this was a jean skirt first before it got to be a bag.
Cut out the jeans straight on the crotch level. Open up the curved seam on the front with your seam ripper.
Reposition it straight and stitch it
Side seams are already stitched for this bag but on the bottom edge you may wish to make a curved shape. Join the bottom edge and add a strap. You got your bag.
Make your own patchwork fabric from old jeans scraps and make this boxy pouch.

That is so cute! Great idea.
Thanks Penny! I love having a crafting stash to play with!
I love this bag Kim. I have jeans I don't wear anymore. Trying to decide what to make with them. I have an idea in mind. This gave me another. Thanks my friend
Oh…I can’t wait to see what your idea is, Cindy! I enjoy crafting with them. I’ve made a cup cozy, a ring and this bag. Eventually, I’d like to make a fun banner. For now, though, I’m out of scraps. Happy Wednesday!
Very cute and simple, great tutorial too. Love it 😍
Thanks Claire! That's high praise from the queen of denim upcycles!! ❤️
Very cute, and so you! I love the red strap and the iron-on transfer. Brava!
Thanks Ricki! It was so easy to do. I definitely think I’ll be making more.
It turned out so cute! I love your iron on - reminds me of your wreath. That was the perfect thing to add to it. Having your daughter "borrow" it is a big compliment!
Thanks Mari and you're right, it's a HUGE compliment. There was a long time there when nothing I wore or owned was cool. It's nice to see we're finding common ground in the fashion arena again. Guess I'm not as old as I thought I was...although the hot flashes say otherwise! 😉
Cute bag! I used to make these: https://cannaryfamily.blogspot.com/2013/03/denim-baskets.html
Wow. Your bags are the read deal!! They look fantastic.
You made such a cute denim bag Kim. It's great that you used the old jeans to make your bag. I like the strap and the flower on the front of the bag. I hope you and your daughter enjoy using your new bag.
Thanks Julie!! It was great to be able to use that pretty red trim again. It’s been in my stash for far too long!
Such a sweet makeover, Kim! Like! I'm also in the mood for making do - I've brought out the box with the smallest pieces of leftover fabric and am making scrappy creatures. Amalia xo
And they are sure to be totally darling, Amalia! I can't wait to get a peek!! xo
Great idea for recycling old jeans, Kim! I have a few stashed in a bin somewhere. Of course you know I'm really digging that "red" strap and red floral transfer.
Thanks Marie!! The magic is in the details for sure. Plus, I love that it was so easy!!
Oh my goodness! This is such a cute idea! Pinned! I love shopping my craft boxes every now and then. It's like Christmas every time! I always forget what I have stored away.
Thanks Michelle! I enjoy digging into that closet every now and then. Better than a thrift haul. 😉
Super cute, Kim. I remember making things out of old jeans and embroidering them. xo Laura
I wish I was better at embroidery, Laura. Next time I might give it a try.
I think you could probably make something cute out of a garbage bag!!!! Might not should have cut up those jeans though...wide legs are back in style! But I won't be wearing them:)
Cheri, you are always so very kind to me. Thank you so much! I do enjoy trying to pretty things up, I like a challenge. And those jeans weren’t mine, they were my fickle kids’ jeans. I do have a pair of those wide leg ones now though. They’re very fashionable, but not so comfortable…I’m not used to all that fabric!! Enjoy the weekend!
Cute....I have a lot of jeans that I plan on doing something with. Bags was one of the things I thought about doing. Nice job,
Thanks Pam! I hope you'll share what you make. I need more ideas! And you should visit my friend Claire who I mentioned at the end of the post. She has crazy, crazy good ideas! Thanks for taking the time to comment and visit!!
Hi, I made something similar a few years ago as a gift for my sister. :-) I used the pocket of another pair of jeans for the front pocket on the tote.
That sounds so great, Carla! Very creative. I need to save legs and pockets now!!
Mmmmm, I suspect you may soon be wishing jeans had three legs since I know you have two songbirds in the house and Mom needs one too ;-) Brilliant idea, Kim. Love how it turned out.
Oh Michelle, you know it! I'm going to need a lot more jeans!! And thank you my creative friend. High compliments from you...xo
Kim, What a great and useful repurposing idea!! I love it!! I was thinking of other things to do with old jeans and thought make of making some sort of table runner out of the pants legs..Thanks so much for stopping by!! Hugs, Debbie
Oh…a table runner sounds very cool for summer picnics or BBQs, Debbie. Love it!!

How to Make 4 Easy, DIY Denim Bags Out of One Pair of Old Jeans
For this DIY, I’m going to show you how to make denim bags from old jeans. Follow this tutorial and your new DIY denim bag can be used for anything from school supplies to a phone case. The great thing about this tutorial is that you’ll be making your DIY denim bag from jeans, which means you can recycle all the pants that you don’t like or don’t fit you anymore. Let’s get started!
Tools and materials:
- Sewing machine
- Lining fabric
- Strap materials (rope, cord, yarn)
- Magnetic bag clasp or velcro
Style 1: Casual handbag
1. Cut off the legs
Measure 12-15 inches down one leg of the jeans, and cut down the line.
Fold over and use the already-cut leg as a template for the other leg.
2. Cut the jeans open
Use a ruler to draw a straight line from the button to the bottom of the jeans and then cut along it.
Then cut down the middle seam from the back of the pants.
3. Refine the edges
Use a ruler to draw a straight line from the other side of the button, and use it to cut off the extra fabric you won’t need.
Use a ruler to mark the hem into a straight-edged, rectangular shape, cutting off any angled fabric.
Your line should look something like this.
You should now have two separate pieces, a front and a back. Lay them right sides facing, and sew along the edges using a zigzag stitch, but leave open the top part where the waistband.
Flip the bag right side out and iron out any imperfections.
6. Cut out the lining
Use the bag as a template to cut out three pieces of lining from the fabric of your choice. You can use an old pillowcase, felt, or any other kind of fabric.
7. Create the pocket
Cut out a rectangle from the lining that is 10 x 8 inches.
Fold the fabric in half, then sew along the open edges, leaving a gap in the middle of the bottommost edge.
Cut off the corners.
Flip inside out, iron, and then sew along the edge.
Pin the pocket to the lining and sew.
8. Sew lining
Place the right sides of the two pieces of lining together, and sew.
Cut off the bottom corners.
Fold the top edges down and iron.
10. Create the loops
Cut out two pieces of denim that are 6 in x 3 in.
Fold each piece in half twice and iron.
Place in the waistband and sew to secure.
11. Attach the lining
Sew or glue the lining to the inside of the bag.
12. Add the finishing touches
Use a strap, rope, or piece of cord, and attach it to the loops. Then, close up the bag with a magnetic bag clasp or velcro.
Here’s the finished bag!
Style 2: Festival bag
Cut 11 inches from the bottom of a pant leg.
Then 1 inch from the bottom.
Turn inside out and sew along the bottom using a zigzag stitch.
Then, sew 2 inches from the bottom corners.
Cut off the extra fabric.
3. Create the lining
Create lining in the same way, using the previous steps.
4. Create loops
Cut two pieces of denim that are 3 in x 1 in, and fray the edges.
Pin to the outside of the bag.
5. Attach lining
Place the lining inside the bag with the right sides facing, and pin it to the loops.
Sew, but leave a 2-inch gap.
Use the gap to turn it right side out and iron
8. Add finishing touches
Attach a strap to the loop, and velcro or clasp to close. Decorate.
Here’s the finished bag!
Style 3: Foldover Bag
Cut 16.5 in from the bottom of a pants leg.
Turn inside out and sew along the edge you just cut using a zigzag stitch.
Turn right side out and iron.
4. Add finishing touches
For the strap, I crocheted a strap using some leftover yarn and just chaining until it was the length I liked.
Then use a sewing needle to attach it to the bag.
Decorate, and you’re done!
Style 4: Pocket bag
Cut 10.5 inches from the center of the pant leg.
Turn inside out and glue along one open edge.
Then, turn right side out. Fold the top down 1.5 inches and glue.
Cut out a small panel that is 5.5 x 6 inches.
Fray both of the longer sides to create a fringe.
5. Fold and glue
Fold the top and bottom underneath and glue them down.
6. Glue the small panel to the bag
Glue along all sides except the top to create a pocket.
7. Decorate
To decorate, I created 3 smaller panels and glued them to the bag.
8. Add handle
Use webbing or rope and glue to the inside of the bag.

Wow, some gorgeous denim refashions! My favorite thing when my girls were little was to take jeans and cut off the legs to add cotton skirts. They loved it too. I need to save some of these for later craft projects.
I'm rarely drawn to jeans re-do projects (don't really know why, unless it's the inherent obviousness of where the material came from) but some of the ideas you've featured here are beyond the usual. I still do prefer it when — like your jeans pocket tote bag and your fabric basket — the projects are paired with other fabric.

A sling bag from old denim. Take your jeans and keep it folded with the zipper opening of the pant on one side.
