Travel + Leisure / Brian Kopinski

Going on a trip but want to stick to your fitness goals? No sweat. Portable exercise equipment — everything from resistance bands and foldable yoga mats to weighted vests — allows you to get in a good workout wherever you are.

These travel-friendly items will easily fit inside a carry-on without breaking size or weight restrictions , and yet they strengthen and tone your muscles just as well as (sometimes even better than) full-size equipment you’d find in a regular gym.

To help you determine which products are worth the weight, we researched and tested a list of portable exercise equipment, specifically looking for compact options that will work well for travel. We also incorporated several options that we’ve personally tested, including a travel yoga mat, a yoga towel, resistance bands, and a massage gun. We evaluated the equipment on several attributes, such as portability, performance, absorbency, and comfort. We’ve continued to use these items since testing wrapped to determine if their performance remains strong (read more about our testing process below).

Once you get to your destination, you’ll have no problem finding room to do the space-efficient exercises. Here are our picks for small but mighty items worthy of a purchase, from massage guns to ab equipment for serious muscle growth.

Best Travel Yoga Mat

Aeromat elite yoga pilates mat.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

This cushioned yoga mat offers luxe features at an inexpensive price.

We noticed a slight rubber smell during testing, which might bother sensitive noses.

If you’re a yogi who’s often on the move, keep up your yoga practice with the Aeromat Elite Yoga / Pilates Mat. During our tests, the sticky polyvinyl chloride fabric ensured that no sweaty feet or palms went sliding. And the built-in mesh has anti-stretch capability so the yoga mat moved with us as we flowed into different poses.

This yoga mat exceeded our cushioning needs by defying the notion that travel yoga mats are notoriously thin. It comes in two sizes: 5 millimeters and 6 millimeters, both of which offer ample comfort for sore joints or knees. Traveling yogis have the option of purchasing the mat with a harness or without. We recommend getting the harness since it makes it easy to sling around your shoulder if you don’t want to sacrifice valuable luggage space. The lightweight mat comes in several calming colors, such as sea glass green, dusty rose, and chai.

Best Yoga Towel

Lululemon the towel.

  • Absorbency 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5

The strong grip keeps your body rooted to the mat so you’re free to flow from one pose to the next.

The edges could be more tailored to prevent fraying.

Yoga may be a relaxing activity, but that doesn’t mean you won’t work up a sweat. This Lululemon yoga towel with microfiber fabric prevents your mat from becoming a slip-and-slide. If you need more grip, such as during a restorative yoga class, simply spray more water overtop. When we added a decent amount of water to it, we did feel moisture seeping through, but it quickly dissipated into the material. We also didn’t experience any bunching.

The towel overlaps a standard size mat, so you can use it on larger mats or as a towel for your post-workout shower. When it’s time to pack it up, fold it into a tiny square or roll it like a yoga mat. After practice, we cleaned it in the washing machine and were pleased to discover that there were no signs of wear-and-tear or piling. The microfiber fabric remains baby-soft, perfect for laying on during Savasana. Yogis have three stylish colors to choose from: black, hail, or velvet dust.

The Details: 26 x 71 inches

Best Resistance Bands

Chareada resistance bands set.

  • Quality 4.5 /5
  • Versatility 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Grip 4.5 /5

The resistance tube and loop bands are durable enough to prevent breaks or rebound snaps.

The grips provide a no-slip hold, but certain hand positions can cause tenderness.

For a strength training workout that’s lightweight, portable, and doesn’t incur a monthly gym fee, don’t resist the pull of this resistance band set. The 23-pack combo pulls on the heartstrings of any fitness lover since it has high-quality stackable tube resistance bands and loop bands that provide up to 150 pounds and 40 pounds of weight, respectively.

We traveled with the kit for two weekends and loved the portability of being able to throw it in our bag and get a workout from wherever. We did everything from basic arm curls to fly exercises that work the back and pectoral muscles. The kit also comes with dual-sided sliders, door anchor weights, ankle straps, and an adjustable skipping rope for even more versatility. Within a week, we were already seeing noticeable definition in our arms and shoulders. We loved how much tighter our upper body felt from them after testing.

The Details: Silicone | ‎13.7 x 9.7 x 3.8 inches

Best Massage Gun

Therabody theragun mini.

  • Effectiveness 5 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Stall Force 5 /5

It offers Bluetooth connectivity so you can access a library of workouts on the Therabody app even when you’re far from home.

The small size makes it difficult to target large areas, such as the back.

Small but powerful: that’s the best way to describe the Theragun Mini 2nd Generation. The ultra-light massage gun more than makes up for the previous version’s issues in size and portability by being 20 percent lighter and 30 percent smaller. Simply throw it into a gym bag or your luggage for on-the-spot muscle recovery via three powerful speeds and three attachments.

We liked how the ergonomic triangle shape and grip fit nicely into our palms during our tests. The portable size is best-suited to handle the needs of smaller muscle groups, such as the calves, hamstrings, arms, and forearms. And while it doesn’t go quite as deep into the muscle as the company’s larger versions, we were able to relax sore muscles once we pressed down hard enough during testing. Stall force never derailed our recovery. The device has 120-minute battery life, so you can probably leave the charging cable at home if you’re going away on a short trip. We appreciated the carrying case, which keeps the good vibes going by protecting your device.

The Details: 1.5 pounds | 7.9 x 5.9 x 2 inches

Best Yoga Block

Manduka cork yoga block.

The lightweight block takes up no more space than a toiletry bag.

Cork is more likely to stain than foam.

A Manduka block makes your on-the-go yoga setup even more effective. It’s made from coarse-grain cork, which is super compact and lightweight compared to wood, foam, and coarse-grain cork. The non-slip material keeps you stable and secure as it props you up and makes it easier to move deeper into poses. Consider it the ying to your yoga mat’s yang.

The Details: 2 pounds | 4 x 6 x 9 inches

Best for Abs

Vinsguir ab roller.

  • Assembly 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Quality/Comfort 4 /5
  • Versatility 3.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

It has a thick base to keep your body balanced.

The handle isn’t as steady as similar options.

When crunches aren’t doing it for you, try this ab roller to strengthen your core. It tones the abdominal muscles by rolling your body into a plank and back. With a wheel that is 3.2 inches thick, this ab roller keeps you balanced and stable, and you can throw it in any carry-on or bag. There’s also a comfy knee pad to keep you rolling comfortably for years to come.

The Details: 1.4 pounds | 6.5 x 12 inches

Best for Weight Training

Bala bangles.

  • Ease of Use 4.9 /5
  • Fit/Comfort 5 /5
  • Versatility 4.5 /5

They add an extra challenge to whatever workout you have going on that day.

One to two pounds of weight resistance may not be challenging enough for some.

For workout equipment that moves with you, you can’t go wrong with these Bala Bangles. Featured on Shark Tank, they’re as stylish as they are durable, made with only the highest-quality recycled steel and wrapped in baby-soft silicone. Don’t be surprised if people confuse them for actual bracelets!

The design is unisex and one-size-fits-all, so there’s something for everyone. Customize the bracelet to your personal style and fitness goals with the large selection of colors and choice of one to two pounds of weight resistance. Then, strap them on, and enjoy the extra challenge.

The Details: 1 to 2 pounds | 13.5 x 3.5 x .75 inches per bangle

Best for Leg Day

Vaunn folding pedal exerciser.

 Amazon

  • Ease of Setup 4.5 /5
  • Performance 3.5 /5
  • Features 4 /5

This pedal exercise is an easy way to get your legs moving.

Some users find the pedal strap to be too big.

Friends never let friends skip leg day, so allow us to introduce you to the Vaunn Medical Folding Pedal Exerciser. It only weighs 5.4 pounds ( much easier to transport than an actual exercise bike), and the design is compact enough to fit under most desks and tables. You can easily combine it with your daily activities, such as work meetings and TV-watching, or use it when you have time to kill at the airport.

The base is sturdy enough to prevent wobbling, so don’t be afraid to amp things up with the resistance knob. Since no tools are required, assembly is quick and easy, and the quick-release folding mechanism makes it simple to store everything between sweat sessions.

The Details: 5.4 pounds | 11.2 x 15.2 x 18.2 inches

Best for Total Body

Trx all-in-one suspension training fitness system.

This suspension training tool can be modified to fit every fitness level and can provide a thorough workout without the use of weights or dumbbells.

You have to pay for access to the TRX Training Club app after the 30-day free trial ends.

TRX (Total-Body Resistance Exercise) is a popular name in the world of fitness, and you don’t even have to go to an actual gym to use the equipment, or have access to a trainer. This highly-rated portable workout system uses the tried-and-true suspension training straps to provide you with a total body workout — no weights or dumbbells required. It’s lightweight at under two pounds, and it takes up hardly any space in a suitcase.

The whole kit is an incredible value that can be used in even the most modestly sized hotel rooms. It comes equipped with a door anchor, a suspension anchor, and a mesh bag to take with you on the go. Since TRX exercises require some guidance, the kit comes with a 35-page workout guide for routine ideas, and you can download the TRX Training Club app for a free 30-day trial of coach-led workouts.

The Details: 1.7 pounds | In package: 12.2 x 8.7 x 8.5 inches; Out of package: 53 x 1.5 x 6 inches

Best Portable Home Gym

Oyo personal gym.

It requires almost no space to use.

The 25 pounds of resistance may be too little for some people.

This portable home gym is out of this world — literally. It’s made with SpiraFlex resistance technology, which was invented by Paul Francis to help NASA astronauts get fit on the International Space Station. With durable nylon-coated stainless steel cables and polymer construction, this total-body system is built to last. It provides 25 pounds of resistance in each hand for a killer workout, yet the entire system only weighs two pounds. You’ll also receive access to workout videos that were created by OYO fitness director Nick Bolton (although the app isn’t highly rated). To top it all off, you’ll enjoy peace of mind with a three-year warranty.

The Details: 2 pounds | 26 x 7 x 3 inches

Best Weighted Vest

Omorpho g-vest+.

Whether you’re walking, hiking, or doing CrossFit, this vest amps up your workouts.

They only come in two sizes per gender.

When it comes to a weighted vest, you want a product that adds resistance without making your carry-on unwieldy. Another must-have: It has to fit like a compression shirt without the restriction of a compression shirt. This design from Omorpho checks all the boxes.

Available in five colors, the G-Vest+ cinches at your sides and has adjustable shoulder straps so you can find the perfectly snug fit. The weight of the five-pound women’s version and the 10-pound men’s version are equally distributed around your torso so you have full range of motion with an extra bit of challenge. It’s made of a super-soft neoprene and includes a back panel for ventilation. Connect to the Omorpho app to be led through high-intensity, do-anywhere workouts.

The Details: Up to 10 pounds

The Travel + Leisure team took part in testing a total of 69 portable workout items in our New York City testing lab. By incorporating them into our workout routines, we assessed several attributes across the board, such as quality, portability, and durability. Since no item is alike, we chose specific attributes to apply for each. For example, we evaluated Lululemon The Towel’s grip and absorbency during our yoga practice and paid special attention to the stall force rating of the Theragun Mini 2nd Generation.

Since portability is an important factor while traveling, we packed up the most compact fitness items to take them home and on trips. In the end, only products with the highest ratings and portable sizes were selected for the tested portion of this roundup. In addition to our tested items, we also included researched options in this roundup.

Tips for Buying Portable Fitness Gear

Consider workout facilities and opportunities at your destination.

Many hotels provide guests with a gym and/or swimming pool. Check to see if your destination has a fitness room or fitness classes available to avoid trying to fit unnecessary items in limited suitcase space. If you’re planning to do activities like jogging or power walking during your travels, make sure a safe route is available, and map it out ahead of time. Consider the level of activity that may already be a part of your journey. For example, you might not want to lug weights for your legs on a ski vacation.

Have a packing plan

Preparation is key when it comes to a fitness packing plan. Before adding fitness equipment to your cart, think about what bags you plan to take and whether you’ll have room for everyday essentials along with your gear. If using a foam roller after working out is key to your fitness routine, then consider purchasing a more travel-friendly version. After use, be sure to clean the items before packing to avoid dirt and bacteria spreading. Finally, pack fragile fitness equipment securely with packing tape or a box, and whenever you can, choose items that come with a carrying case for easier transport.

Factor in both weight and size

Of course, you’ll want to choose exercise equipment that fits inside your carry-on to avoid checked bag fees, but don’t forget that weight is also a factor. On most airlines, bags are considered overweight if they exceed 50 pounds, and they are subject to fees usually starting around $50. Moreover, even if your equipment doesn’t exceed weight limits, dense items can make suitcases inconvenient and uncomfortable to maneuver.

Exercise doesn’t have to be left off the itinerary just because you’re traveling. Try any one (or all) of these activities to stay active:

  • Use the hotel’s amenities, such as the gym or pool
  • Take advantage of fitness apps for quick in-room workouts
  • Go for a walk and explore ( a smartwatch can track your daily steps)
  • Try walking meetings
  • Do calf raises while waiting in line
  • Book a local fitness class near your hotel or vacation rental
  • Go for a bike ride (many cities offer bike rentals)
  • Stretch after a long day of travel
  • Use your body weight (lunges, sit-ups, squats, and planks are all good options)

Yes, you’re allowed to travel with workout supplements (pre-workout, protein powder, vitamins, etc.) in either your carry-on or packed luggage. These are classified as “Protein or Energy Powders” by U.S. Transportation Security Administration. It’s recommended that protein or energy powders larger than 12 ounces be packed in your checked bag in a clear bag or the original packaging.

If you don’t have access to a washing machine, do a quick rinse with soap or travel laundry detergent. Afterward, allow the clothes to dry outside or around your hotel room.

To prevent your workout clothes from stinking up your luggage, pack some scented dryer sheets and store sweaty workout clothes away from dry items, such as in a bag or protective organizer . There are also plenty of duffel and weekender bags that offer a separate compartment for sneakers or dirty clothes.

7 Best Travel Workout Equipment Pieces To Keep Fit on the Go

By Steve Theunissen

Maintaining your fitness routine while travelling can be a real challenge. Whether you’re on holiday, taking a business trip or making an emergency excursion, travel threatens to interrupt the consistency of your workout program, potentially undoing all your hard work.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

While bodyweight travel workouts may do the trick for some, others prefer to take their basic travel workout equipment along on their journeys. In recent years, a raft of portable workout equipment has flooded the market.

As a certified personal trainer, I’ve enthusiastically embraced many of them, recommending them to my PT clients who travel regularly.

In this article, I’ll break down the seven best travel workout equipment pieces for on-the-go training.

Here’s a preview of my seven key pieces of travel workout gear:

  • Suspension Trainer
  • Resistance Bands
  • Ankle Weights
  • Yoga Mat & Block
  • Foam Roller

1. Suspension Trainer

outdoor travel workout equipment

A suspension trainer is a portable fitness trainer designed to complement bodyweight training by allowing you to work at various angles. It consists of adjustable straps with handles and anchor points.

A suspension trainer will work every muscle in your body, with special emphasis on engaging the core to provide mid-air stability. By adjusting the angle that your body is moving through, you can increase or decrease the resistance. This variable resistance allows you to make your workouts progressively more challenging as you get fitter and stronger.

Suspension training requires you to keep your core engaged to stabilize your body to maintain control and balance. As a result, you’ll be working your abs, obliques, and intercostals even when your focus is on your biceps!

A suspension trainer kit is just as compact as a set of resistance bands, making it an ideal travel companion. The inclusion of a door anchor accessory, which is standard with most trainers, allows you to transform any hotel room, Airbnb, or other vacation spot into your personal gym.

Suspension trainers are also ideal for outdoor training. You can attach them to a fence post or tree and soak in the sun’s rays as you work up a sweat.

Check out this guide to find the best suspension trainers for your needs.

2. Resistance Bands

travel personal trainer

Resistance bands are easily my favourite piece of travel training gear. A full set of five bands weighs just a few pounds yet allows you to perform dozens of resistance exercises.

They take up next to no room in your luggage and are highly cost-effective.

Resistance bands are usually sold in sets with a range of colour-coded levels of resistance. They also come with an anchor strap, allowing you to make use of a closed door or other anchor point to create cable pulley simulations.

This allows you to simulate nearly every piece of resistance equipment found in your local gym right in your hotel room.

Some of my clients had the mindset that you can’t get a ‘real’ workout with resistance bands. That was before I took them through an intense upper body band workout. Now they’re resistance band believers. Here’s why resistance bands are the real deal:

  • Variable Resistance: When the band is stretched during your exercise routine, it undergoes a gradual increase in resistance. This is different from free weights or bodyweight exercises, where the resistance remains static throughout the motion. As a result, resistance bands adapt to match your strength curve. This ensures that your muscles are challenged at every movement phase.
  • Focus on the Eccentric Phase: The eccentric, or lowering, phase of an exercise involves the controlled lengthening of a muscle during exercise. Resistance band training encourages a deliberate, controlled descent during exercises such as squats. The band naturally opposes the muscle lengthening, forcing you to perform the eccentric phase with more precision.
  • Explosive Concentric Phase: Band training allows you to safely use an explosive upward lifting motion with more power and speed than you can with free weights. A prime example is the band squat. In contrast to traditional barbell squats, where safety considerations may restrict explosiveness, resistance bands are designed for dynamic concentric action, introducing a dynamic dimension to your travel workout.

This resistance band guide is all you need to find the right resistance bands for you.

3. Ankle & Wrist Weights

travel personal trainer

Ankle and wrist weights are weighted bands that are designed to be strapped to your limbs, providing extra resistance during bodyweight exercises. This is another compact, lightweight training device that will take up hardly any room in your luggage.

Weights are available in a range of resistances, from one pound up to 20 pounds. I recommend buying an adjustable set that allows you to add packets of resistance. These are usually in the form of iron or sand.

Ankle and wrist weights allow you to perform exercises that target your arms, like biceps curls, as well as those for the muscles of your lower body, such as donkey kickbacks. They can also be used to make your cardio and plyometric workouts more challenging.

Wearing them when you are walking or jogging will boost your endurance, elevate your heart rate, and increase your calorie burn.

sliders are the travel workout equipment

Exercise sliders are a highly underrated piece of travel workout equipment. Consisting of a pair of flat, round discs, they are designed to slide on a surface that you’re exercising on. They’re inexpensive, compact and lightweight, making them a no-brainer when it comes to travel and exercise.

In a similar way to suspension trainers, sliders create instability by allowing you to move your arms or legs while you’re doing an exercise. This brings your core into play to stabilize your body and promote balance.

A classic slider exercise is the slider push-up. In this exercise, you move your arms in and out as you do a push-up. The effect is a movement that mimics both the bench press and the dumbbell fly.

Here are half a dozen more exercises that are enhanced with a pair of sliders:

  • Mountain Climbers
  • Lateral Lunges
  • Pike Sliders
  • Single Leg Hamstring Curls
  • Plank Knee Tucks
  • Slider Leg Curl with Bridge

Sliders come in different materials to suit different surface types. If you’re working out on the carpet, you’ll want a plastic surface, while a tile floor requires a fabric covering for the best slide ability. The best sliders will have plastic on one side and fabric on the other to cover both options.

5. Yoga Mat & Block

travel personal trainer

If yoga is part of your regular practice, a yoga mat and block should be among the first things you fit into your luggage. Even if it’s not, these two pieces of gear still rank highly on your essential travel workout equipment list.

A yoga mat provides a clean, comfortable surface to do your floor work on, be it asanas or bodyweight exercises.

You never know what chemicals or other compounds are lurking in hotel and Airbnb carpets, so having a quality mat between you and it is a health necessity.

The non-slip surface of a quality yoga mat provides a stable surface to work on. They also provide cushioning for your joints, reducing the compressive stress on your ankles, wrists, knees, and hips.

Yoga blocks provide stability and support when you’re doing yoga poses so you can maintain proper alignment and balance. They also help you deepen your stretches.

You can use blocks to make your bodyweight exercises more challenging. Use them to elevate your hand or foot position on exercises like push-ups and the plank.

6. Jump Rope

jump rope for a great travel workout

A jump rope is one of the most cost-effective, productive pieces of fitness equipment you can own.

It provides you with an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise that will get your heart racing as it churns through the calories and ups your endurance level. jump

You’ll burn more calories jumping rope than almost any other type of cardiovascular exercise. A 200-pound person who jumps rope for 20 minutes will burn an impressive 362 calories .

Jumping rope will also make you stronger. That 20 minutes of rope jumping will require thousands of revolutions of the rope. That’s thousands of reps involving the quads, glutes, hamstrings, calves, shoulders, and forearms.

Your muscular endurance and explosive strength will both improve as a result.

As an added bonus, jumping rope will also make your bones stronger. When confronted with the joint impact stress of ground reaction forces, the body’s stress adaptive response kicks in. This causes your bones to grow a tiny bit stronger to meet similar stress in the future.

In one study , Olympic-level swimmers experienced significant bone mineral density improvement after 22 weeks of twice-weekly 20-minute jump rope sessions combined with vibration therapy.

7. Foam Roller

travel workout equipment foam roller

A foam roller is a cylindrical device that is usually about 18 inches long and made of a hardy form of plastic. It often features raised nodules or other patterns on its outer surface.

It is used as a self-massage device to allow you to apply self-myofascial release (SMR) in order to bring relief to specific pain points and to help with your recovery after a workout.

A foam roller is a lightweight, compact tool you can easily throw in your gym bag. You can use it in the warm-up/warm-down area of your gym straight after your workout or, if you prefer, wait until you get home.

Pack in your luggage when going on a trip, and you’ll have a portable recovery and self-massage solution to keep your muscles relaxed and pain-free throughout your travels.

5 Personal Trainer Travel Workout Tips

  • Plan Ahead: Do some research before arriving at your destination. Search for nearby fitness facilities, parks, or running trails. Knowing your workout options in advance can help you stay committed to your fitness routine.
  • Focus on bodyweight exercises: Exercises that require minimal equipment, like push-ups, squats, lunges, and burpees, should form the foundation of your workout.
  • Short, Intense Workouts: Up the intensity and reduce the time of your holiday workouts. Experiment with various types of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts that alternate between short, sharp bursts of activity with minimal rest between them.
  • Exercise Early: Get your sessions in before your day gets hectic. If you’re on vacation with family or friends, plan to train while everyone is still sleeping, and your routine won’t interrupt the vacation fun.
  • Don’t Be Too Strict: if you’re on holiday and travelling, embrace that experience without sacrificing your good habits. That goes for exercise as well as eating. It’s not the end of the world if you skip the odd workout or indulge in a treat or two. Confession time: even I enjoy comfort food once or twice each month, this corned beef stew being one of my favourite cheat meals.

Maintaining your fitness routine while travelling can be a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be an insurmountable one. With the right travel workout equipment, you can stay on track with your fitness goals no matter where your journey takes you.

The seven pieces of travel workout gear we’ve covered offer a range of options to suit different preferences and fitness levels. From resistance bands and suspension trainers for versatile strength training to ankle and wrist weights for extra resistance during bodyweight exercises, these portable tools can transform any space into your personal gym.

Don’t forget the often-overlooked exercise sliders, which add a dynamic dimension to your workouts, and the essential yoga mat and block for comfortable and hygienic floor work.

A jump rope, one of the most cost-effective and efficient pieces of travel workout equipment, provides an excellent cardiovascular workout, while a foam roller offers self-massage and recovery benefits to keep your muscles relaxed and pain-free.

Remember to plan ahead, focus on bodyweight exercises, consider short, intense workouts, exercise early to avoid disruptions, and be flexible with your routine. That way, you’ll enjoy your time away while maintaining your healthy exercise habits.

When embarking on your personal fitness journey, enlisting the expertise of a certified personal trainer can be instrumental in helping you effectively and safely achieve your health and fitness goals. A dedicated fitness professional can provide personalized guidance, motivation and workout routines tailored to your specific needs which will allow you to maximize your full potential. With so many different options available, it’s essential to find a trainer who aligns with your personal preferences and fitness aspirations. This will help to ensure your personalized training is both a successful and enjoyable experience.

In this article, we will explore the main reasons for hiring a certified personal trainer, what to consider when choosing the right trainer for you and the best ways to find fitness professionals in your area. We also cover specific topics such as the cost of personal training, whether personal training can help with weight loss and if personal trainers are actually worth the time and financial investment. We hope this article is your first step on the path to success in all of your fitness endeavors.

Why Hire A Personal Trainer

Guidance and safety.

Quality personal trainers possess the knowledge and expertise needed to create personalized workout programs based on your current fitness level, specific goals and any limitations or injuries you may have. They can also guide you through your workouts, teaching you how to use different pieces of fitness equipment while coaching you on proper form and technique. Personal fitness trainers also provide a support system when attempting heavy lifts such as the bench press or barbell back squat that require a spotter to ensure your safety. Ultimately, a personal trainer's guidance will help you maximize your results while simultaneously reducing the risk of injury.

One of the primary reasons why individuals hire a personal trainer is because they provide much-needed accountability and motivation. They will help to hold you responsible for sticking to your fitness goals, making it harder to skip workouts or make excuses. They can also supply the necessary encouragement and support to keep you feeling motivated, even when faced with any potential challenges and setbacks.

Personal trainers can also help you push beyond your perceived limits. They encourage you to try new exercises, increase the amount of weight lifted and even attempt more challenging workouts. Having someone by your side who believes in your potential can help you break through any mental barriers and achieve things you might not have thought possible.

Personal trainers can help you make the most of your time and effort in the gym by programming specific exercises designed to support your fitness goals. They can also teach you how to use the gym equipment properly, making your workouts more time efficient and reducing the risk of wasted effort. Another example of how a personal trainer can keep your workout flowing smoothly is when a piece of gym equipment necessary for your workout is monopolized by other gym-goers. In this case, a personal trainer can provide an exercise substitution, such as performing a dumbbell deadlift instead of using a  barbell , to prevent you from having to wait around for a specific machine or piece of equipment to open up.

Variety and enjoyment

Personal trainers have the ability to incorporate a wide variety of different exercises, equipment and training methodologies into your fitness routine. This helps to keep your workout sessions fresh and interesting, ensuring you won’t get bored and giving you a reason to look forward to future training sessions. Finding the right personal trainer also adds a fun social component to your workouts, something that is difficult to find unless you have a dedicated training partner. This social support can boost your mood, reduce stress and generally make your fitness journey more enjoyable overall.

Health and fitness goals

In addition to helping you achieve your fitness goals, personal trainers can help you adopt healthy habits outside of the gym. Many personal trainers are able to provide guidance on nutrition,  muscle-building supplements , sleep, stress management and other beneficial lifestyle changes that will support your long-term health and well-being.

What To Look For In A Personal Trainer

Experience and qualifications.

Before choosing a personal trainer, you should consider the trainer’s experience in the fitness industry and whether they have any certifications from reputable organizations such as the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) , the American Council on Exercise (ACE) or the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) . It’s also important to find a trainer who has worked with other clients that had comparable needs and goals to your own. A personal trainer with a proven track record of helping individuals at similar fitness levels can provide valuable guidance on how best to succeed on your personal fitness journey.

While not necessarily essential, it is convenient to find a personal trainer that is within a reasonable distance from your home or job, especially if you’re looking for hands-on personal training. This reduces total travel time and allows you to more easily incorporate training sessions into your schedule. This also makes it more likely that you'll stay consistent and committed to your fitness routine.

On the other hand, if you have some workout experience, then a virtual fitness coach who can write your programming and perform video reviews may suit your needs just fine. In this case, location is less of a factor and you can theoretically expand your search for a personal trainer worldwide.

Communication and professionalism

Effective communication is crucial in the trainer-client relationship. A good trainer should be able to understand your goals, concerns and limitations as well as easily explain exercises, techniques and fitness concepts clearly. A quality personal trainer should also be reliable, organized and respectful of your time, ensuring that they are present and attentive during every training session.

Where To Find A Personal Trainer

There are several avenues for finding a personal trainer.

Online directories, such as the American Council on Exercise provide searchable databases of the best personal trainers in your area. These directories often include trainer profiles, their specialties and relevant contact information. In this day and age, you can also simply search for “personal trainers in my area” and a list of potential gyms and personal trainers will populate the search results. From there it’s as simple as finding their contact information and calling or emailing them for additional details.

Many personal trainers also promote themselves on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn. You can search for local in-person and online personal trainers in your area using relevant hashtags or location-based searches.

Many  local gyms and fitness centers have in-house personal trainers or will be able to connect you with certified personal trainers who operate independently within their facilities. It’s usually best to simply inquire at the front desk about personal training services to get their professional recommendations.

If you are serious about finding a personal trainer that will suit your needs, then it’s smart to seek recommendations from friends, family members, or colleagues who have had positive experiences with local personal trainers. Personal recommendations can provide valuable insights into a trainer’s qualifications, training style and overall effectiveness.

Fitness apps

Many fitness apps such as Future and Sweat offer the option to connect with personal trainers. These apps provide a convenient platform to find and hire personal trainers who can provide remote or virtual training services. When using fitness apps to find a personal trainer, it’s important to review their profiles, qualifications and user reviews of the trainers to ensure they meet your requirements. Additionally, consider factors such as their availability, communication methods and pricing structure before making a decision.

How To Hire A Personal Trainer

It’s best to start your search by determining how you would like to be trained. If you are completely new to the gym, then a one-on-one, hands-on personal trainer is likely the best way to maximize your progress. In this case, it’s worth checking out local gyms and fitness centers to see if they offer in-person training or have any recommendations for qualified personal trainers in the area. However, if you have some familiarity with training, then you may prefer a virtual trainer or the use of a fitness app to help achieve your fitness goals.

Once your training style has been established, you should consider factors such as your budget and the trainer’s qualifications, experience and specializations to help you make an informed decision about which trainer will be right for you.

Things To Look for in a Personal Trainer

  • Certifications: Look for a trainer who holds relevant personal training certifications from reputable organizations to ensure they possess the necessary knowledge and skills to train you effectively.
  • Experience: Consider the trainer’s personal experience in the fitness industry and whether they have worked with clients who have similar goals and fitness levels to your own.
  • Specialization: If you have specific needs, such as sports-specific training or post-injury physical therapy, look for a trainer with expertise in those areas.
  • Training style: Every personal trainer has their own training style and philosophy, be sure to choose a trainer whose training approach aligns with your personal preferences and goals.
  • Communication: You should feel comfortable sharing your personal experiences, goals and concerns with your personal trainer in order for them to most effectively design a training program to meet your needs. Look for a trainer who listens attentively, understands your needs and is able to effectively communicate both inside and outside of the gym regarding training and scheduling.
  • Availability: Consider your own schedule and trainer’s availability before selecting a personal trainer. Determine if they can accommodate your preferred training times and frequency since consistency is key to achieving your fitness goals.
  • Affordability: Personal training rates can vary, so consider your budget and the value you place on the training services provided. While it’s important to find a trainer within your price range, remember that expertise and experience often come at a higher cost.

Remember to take your time, do thorough research and trust your instincts when making your final decision.

If in-person training seems a little daunting, testing the waters with a virtual trainer, like those through Future, can be a good way to ease into the experience of working with a personal trainer.

Are Personal Trainers Really Worth It?

If you are serious about achieving your fitness goals, then hiring a skilled personal trainer is almost always worth it. Regardless of if you are a complete gym newbie or a fitness veteran, a quality personal trainer can provide numerous benefits including specialized workouts tailored to your needs and goals, motivation to work harder and remain consistent and coaching proper technique for the best muscle-building results and injury prevention.

I personally believe a personal trainer’s best asset is their ability to help you progress from week to week. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of consistently performing the same exercise routine, at the same exact weight, making it difficult to see results. A personal trainer can introduce new exercises, modify your workout routine and adjust the intensity level to challenge you appropriately. This can help to maximize your efficiency and more quickly achieve your fitness goals.

Our Favorite Apps for Personal Training

Future app

Future is a virtual training platform that pairs you with one of its 75+ unique coaches to best suit your personal needs and fitness goals. Once matched with your coach, they will reach out to set up a FaceTime call to learn more about your training experience, the training equipment available to you and your personal fitness goals. (Note that if you ever decide that you would like to test out a different one of Future’s coaches, then you can do so at any time at no additional cost.) From there, your coach will design an individualized workout plan that will be delivered to your phone on a weekly basis. Here are some of the key features of the Future app that set it apart from the competition.

  • Weekly customized workouts based on your schedule and the equipment available to you (perfect for individuals who travel and utilize hotel gyms)
  • Unlimited messaging access to your coach for any questions, concerns or needed motivation
  • Ability to send workout videos to your coach to ensure proper technique and reduce the risk of injury

One thing to consider is that Future is only compatible with Apple devices such as the iPhone and an Apple Watch, which is necessary to deliver detailed and real-time biometric data directly to your personal trainer. Currently, you can try your first month of Future for 50% off, and then $199 per month from there on out. While this is a significant investment, Future is still generally more cost-effective than hiring a traditional personal trainer.

Joggo

Joggo is a  running app that’s designed to help you reach your personal running and weight loss goals. If you choose to use their subscription-based service, Joggo will provide a personalized running program with week-by-week workouts, detailed warm-up and cool-down exercise videos and educational content focused on nutrition, breathing, weight loss, motivation and more. Joggo also offers the option to include a balanced meal that’s curated to complement your running routine and achieve your ideal body composition. Every plan is completely customized, taking into account your current fitness level, health, physical condition and any injuries you might have. Joggo’s team of fitness professionals also double-checks that every training program is effective and safe to use.

While you perform your running workouts, the Joggo app will track your distance, monitor your speed and provide helpful audio cues throughout your workout. While this app does not offer individual support from a live coach, the app is much less expensive than conventional personal training (two months for $33, four months for $46 and six months for $66) and only requires a pair of running shoes to get started. The option to add a customized meal plan is also a great feature that many Joggo users found helpful in achieving their ideal body goals.

Personal Trainer FAQs

How much do personal trainers cost.

The cost of personal training can vary significantly based on a number of different factors, including the trainer’s experience, qualifications and the specific services provided. In most cases, personal trainers charge per session and the typical prices range from $35 to $100 per hour with the average cost somewhere between $60 and $75 dollars per session . Personal trainers with specialized certifications or expertise in specific areas, such as sports performance, injury rehabilitation or nutrition coaching may charge higher rates due to their specialized knowledge.

How many times a week should I see my personal trainer?

I reached out to fitness professional and certified personal trainer Gary Gall for insight into how many times a week a client should meet with their personal trainer. Gary says, “Ideally the bulk of our clientele train two to four times a week with a personal trainer, but the sweet spot for most individuals is a three-day-per-week schedule.” He gives a few different reasons for promoting the three-day-a-week schedule including the fact that, “this routine allows for adequate recovery between sessions and it’s usually not an overwhelming amount of time for people dealing with the many stresses of everyday life.”

Is 30 minutes with a personal trainer enough?

The duration of a training session with a personal trainer can vary depending on your individual goals, fitness levels and the specific workout plan. While 30 minutes may be sufficient for some people, it may not be enough for others. For example, a 30-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program or CrossFit-style workout can be highly effective, however, a powerlifting or Olympic weight lifting program may require a larger time investment. Another factor to consider is your current fitness level. Beginners may benefit from shorter sessions to avoid excessive fatigue, while more advanced trainees may prefer longer sessions to adequately challenge themselves.

Should I get a personal trainer if I’m new to the gym?

Hiring a personal trainer is a great investment if you’re new to the gym. Not only can they help you develop an effective workout routine, but they can also teach you how to properly navigate and use the overwhelming amount of machines, equipment and weights available in a modern gym. This will rapidly improve your progress, help keep you safe and a trainer can add a fun social aspect to the gym providing valuable guidance, support and motivation to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Are personal trainers good for weight loss?

Yes, personal trainers can be highly beneficial for individuals with weight loss goals. This is because trainers can design personalized workout programs tailored specifically to achieve your bodyweight goals. Many trainers also offer nutritional guidance as part of their services and can provide a structured  weight loss program , plus advice on healthy eating habits and strategies for creating a calorie deficit, which is essential for reducing body fat.

Final Thoughts

Everyone has unique fitness goals and individual needs. Whether you are a complete beginner or a fitness veteran, a personal trainer can provide tremendous benefits in establishing a quality workout routine and ensuring you are making consistent progress. A trainer likely has a different fitness background, experiences and knowledge which can bring a fresh perspective and innovative exercises into your current routine. This will not only prevent repetitive workout boredom but may also help stimulate new muscle growth and progress toward your fitness goals. We hope our article helped to provide valuable insight into how a personal trainer can benefit you and this knowledge will help you find the perfect trainer to meet your needs.

Best Overall Certification

When it comes to the best overall personal trainer certification, you’ll want one that prepares you to work with all types of clientele — from young adults to older individuals and every fitness level in between. This one fits the bill.

ISSA Personal Trainer Certification

The International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) Personal Trainer Certification will help teach you the skills you need to motivate any client to reach their fitness goals. You’ll learn all about the body’s musculature and skeletal structure, along with how these joints, bones, and muscles work and function. Plus, you’ll also gain confidence using the cert’s Purpose-Driven Training Model to create custom programs that focus on the most effective exercises for your trainee and ways to ensure they stay injury-free in the process.

ISSA Personal Training Certification

ISSA has certified over 475,000 students through their various personal trainer certifications since 1988. It has a 90 percent test rate, a free retest, and tons of resources to help you become the best personal trainer you can be.

When you sign up for this certification, you’ll receive access to an online textbook, online practice quizzes, audio and video lecture options (for those who prefer to hear or watch the information), an online workout, an online student forum, an open book or proctored exam option, a CPT education boot camp, as well as a free professional website post-certification. Keep in mind that if you already have a background in fitness, you may want to find a more specialized certification. The information presented is comprehensive but more basic than what you’ll have learned while obtaining a kinesiology degree.

  • Anyone looking to train a variety of clients will like that this certification covers training material for a variety of client demographics.
  • Individuals who are getting their first training certification will appreciate the ISSA’s range of packages.
  • There are a wide variety of instructional options (online textbook, audio, video, etc.) to suit different learning types.
  • Individuals who want to work with athletes or train clients at a higher fitness level may not find this certification specific enough.
  • The information covered here is more basic than you’d have gotten if you already have a kinesiology degree.

The material in the ISSA personal training certification is comprehensive, has a variety of learning methods, and provides plenty of additional study aids to help you pass your course. Plus, the free coaching website that it provides is a solid perk to help your business get started.

Best Certification for Coaching Athletes

When it comes to working with athletes or clientele with a higher fitness IQ and ability, it’s important to know exactly which exercises these individuals should be doing to excel in their sport or field. This cert provides in-depth knowledge about overactive and underactive muscles, and it shows how to pinpoint muscle imbalances via static postural, dynamic, and strength assessments.

NASM Personal Trainer Certification

The main philosophy of the National Academy of Sports Medicine certification is what the company refers to as the Optimum Performance Training Model (OPT). The model focuses on five specific phases of training: stabilization endurance, strength endurance, hypertrophy,  maximal strength , and power — in that order. The first stage of the model includes stabilization endurance, which focuses on balance and stabilization. Stage two is all about strength  and encompasses the strength endurance, hypertrophy, and maximal strength stages. The third and final stage centers around power and includes  the power phase of training .

NASM Personal Trainer Certification

If you want to move from an exercise enthusiast to a bonafide fitness professional, then you can develop your skills in client assessment, program writing, self-marketing, sales, physiology, psychology, and more with the Personal Trainer Certification from NASM.

While the philosophy behind this certification is entirely based on science, making it reputable for training athletes, NASM works hard to keep the material fresh and exciting. You’ll learn how to perform different types of postural, strength, and cardiovascular assessments in order to determine compensations and muscle imbalances and the corrective strategies to fix them. When you purchase this certification, you’ll have the option of either a self-study program done on your own or a guided study program with support, plus a job guarantee at the end.. One thing to note is that a high school diploma or a GED is a prerequisite for this program, so if you don’t have one, you’ll need to get that first.

  • Anyone looking to work with athletes or clientele with a higher fitness ability and IQ will like the science-backed model this certification is based on.
  • The focus on adapting programming to accommodate progression is ideal for developing long-term clients.
  • This certification course teaches you about not only personal training and exercise but business fundamentals, as well.
  • Anyone without a high school diploma or GED won’t qualify for this certification.
  • Individuals who aren’t interested in a model-based training certification might find this too complex.

The NASM Certified Personal Trainer certification is the most well-rounded one on the market. It will teach you training techniques and how to apply them, as well as how to perform a new client assessment and build a successful career with sales tips and tricks. It also provides some information on  supplements  and nutrition, too.

Best Certification for the Money

If you’re new to personal training or switching professional fields, you may want to start with an affordable certification and widely recognized option like this one.

ACE Personal Training Certification

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) Personal Training Certification is one of the most recognized certifications in the field. The program options are Basic, Plus, and Advantage, each increasing in price. However, they often offer promotions and sales, making the cert rather affordable (especially compared to others).  You’ll learn about human anatomy, modifications for clients with special considerations, as well as how to assess, program and make progressions as your clients grow and gain. The only category lacking is for training clients in special populations — this cert touches on the subject but does not go into much depth.

ACE Personal Trainer Certification

If you're looking to become a fitness professional, you can develop your skills in program writing, movement assessment, physiology, business development, and more with Ace's Personal Trainer Certification.

There are three different personal training certification packages available for ACE. All packages include the core study program, the final exam, practice exams, a digital textbook, and a digital trainer study companion, with the most affordable package (labeled fittingly as “Basic”) costing just $675. Upgrade to “Plus” for just $70 more, and you’ll also get a hard copy of the textbook and trainer study companion, as well as live Q and A webinars.

The “Advantage” package costs $975 and includes everything from “Plus” with additional audiobook options and facilitated study groups. It’s not the least expensive certification that you’ll find, but it’s lower than many others, and the materials you get make it well worth the cost.

  • The self-pacing learning style works for Individuals looking to learn online at their own speed.
  • The lower cost of this cert will suit individuals who want a price-conscious option.
  • Anyone who wants access to ongoing support and guidance will like the facilitated study group and live Q and A webinars.
  • There is minimal information on training clients who have special needs.
  • Anyone who prefers to do in-person learning and studying may not want this certification.

When you purchase the ACE Personal Training Certification, you’ll be able to complete the program online at your own speed. Most complete the program and exam in about three to six months, or the equivalent of about 80 to 100 hours. The ACE Personal Training Certification is NCCA Accredited, too.

Best Certification For National Recognition

If you’re looking to get a training certification that you can use in different states or even different countries, it’s important to choose one with national recognition. Having an NCCA Accredited certification is the way to go.

NCSF Personal Trainer Certification

The National Council on Strength & Fitness (NCSF) Personal Trainer Certification is an NCCA Accredited certification, so you’ll automatically earn that recognition, and the cert is globally recognized. The cert features the NCSF Easy Learning System, which is an advanced e-learning platform, so you can fully study and test online. However, if you need one-on-one support or group study forums, you may find this certification lacking.

NCSF Personal Trainer Certification

NCSF's Personal Trainer Certification will provide you with the knowledge and expertise needed to provide quality coaching to a wide range of athletes.

Topics covered include functional anatomy, exercise physiology, health and physical fitness, screening and evaluation, nutrition,  weight management , exercise programming, training instruction, considerations for special populations, and professionalism and risk management.

You can choose from four different study bundles, and all allow for the exam to be taken online or in person at a testing center. This certification will qualify you to work both with individuals and small groups in-person or online.

  • Four different study bundles allow students to choose the method that suits them best.
  • Individuals looking to study and take the exam online have the option to do it all at their own pace with this certification.
  • The NCCA accreditation makes this a globally-recognized certification.
  • Individuals who need more support when learning may find this certification falls short in online study forums and expert availability.

Not only is this certification recognized nationally, but NCSF also has strong partnerships with some of the top health and fitness clubs in the world.

Best Certification for General Fitness Clients

If you’re looking to get a certification to work with your average gymgoer, it’s best to get a general fitness certification like this one from Fitness Mentors. By focusing on the fundamentals, you’ll be able to work with all levels of general fitness.

Fitness Mentors Personal Trainer Certification

The first three chapters of the Fitness Mentors Personal Trainer curriculum starts with the fitness assessment, then moves on to anatomy, physiology, and the study of human movement, followed by exercise physiology and energy systems. This gives students a well-rounded knowledge base to train general fitness clients.

Fitness Mentors Personal Trainer Certification

Fitness Mentors provides a well-rounded knowledge base for training the general fitness population, is NCCA accredited, and offers a wide range of study material to suit different learning styles.

You’ll also learn about program design, flexibility, mobility, range of motion, and the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as some bits on nutrition, emergency procedures, professionalism, fitness for special populations and online personal training.

When you purchase this program, you’ll have access to video presentations, a digital textbook, audiobook lectures, assignments and learning activities, practice quizzes, bonus videos, and flashcards, as well as two practice exams to get you ready for the final examination.

  • The well-rounded course coverage will benefit individuals looking to work with the general fitness population.
  • Individuals newer to personal training will find this certification easily digestible, thanks to the variety of study materials available.
  • Two practice exams help ensure the successful completion of the course.
  • Individuals looking to learn training and programming for specialized populations may not find this certification to be specific enough.
  • Anyone who wants help finding a job post-final exam might not find the help they need within this cert’s community.

Fitness Mentors Personal Trainer Certification focuses on developing a well-rounded knowledge base for training the general fitness population. Plus, it is NCCA Accredited and has the highest exam pass rate (according to their website).

Best Certification for Specialized Populations

If you know your fitness career will involve working with specialized populations of individuals, it’s important to choose a certification that focuses on customizable programming.

Being that the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) Personal Trainer Certification is based on a purpose-driven training model, obtaining this cert will allow you to confidently create customized programs for a wide variety of clients. It also dives deeply into training clients with special needs, focusing on exercises that make sense for their specific requirements. You’ll also learn what to do and what not to do with your clientele in order to keep them injury-free.

With this certification, you’ll have 10 different package options to choose from, all of which include student forums to help you study with other future trainers. Also, all of the online material will always be accessible if you need to refresh your skills. This will allow you to look back if you ever need to review a certain topic that pertains to a specific client you’re working with.

  • Anyone looking to train clientele of special populations will like that this certification covers training material for clients outside the general population.
  • Online student forums provide a community to learn and study with.
  • All study materials will be available online after course completion for future reference.
  • Individuals who want to work with athletes or train clients at a higher fitness level may not find this certification specific enough for that demographic.

In addition to providing a wide range of knowledge for training the general fitness population, the ISSA personal training certification has in-depth information for training clients with special needs or requirements. Plus, all of the study material is available post-certification, so you can continue to brush up on your knowledge as needed.

Best Certification for Jobs in Exercise Physiology

If you want to get a job in exercise physiology, you’ll need a certification that clues you in on biology, anatomy, kinesiology, and nutrition. The NASM Personal Trainer Certification will provide all of this — plus, its widespread recognition can help you attain work in the field.

By utilizing the Optimum Performance Training Model (OPT) that the National Academy for Sports Medicine Personal Trainer Certification is based on, you’ll be prepared to train more advanced clientele, including athletes. You’ll be equipped with the ability to explain how your training philosophy will progress through different phases in order to help your client reach their goals and continue to set new ones. Based on a client’s abilities and goals, the OPT model can be modified and adapted to progressively move through the stages of stabilization,  strength , and power.

As one of the most widely recognized personal training certifications, its reputation will help set you up for a job in the exercise physiology field. NASM works hard to keep the material and information updated with the latest scientific studies and breakthroughs, so your knowledge will always be current. A high school diploma or GED is required for this course, so if you don’t have one, you’ll need to get that first or look at a different cert.

  • Anyone looking to pursue a career in exercise physiology will feel confident that this certification is created based on a science-backed model.
  • The focus on progressive programming will help trainers keep clients as they grow fitter over time.
  • This certification’s copious information on training advanced clients is ideal for people who want to work with athletes.
  • If you don’t have a high school diploma or GED, you’ll need to get one to qualify for this course.
  • There is a 180-day time limit on this certification, so people who want to learn at their own pace may want to look elsewhere.

Becoming a NASM Certified Personal Trainer will set you up for success in the exercise physiology field with a sturdy and expansive foundation of knowledge. You’ll learn training techniques, how to adapt and progress them, as well as basic information on nutrition and supplementation, too

How We Chose the Best Personal Training Certifications

When it comes to picking a personal training certification, it probably comes as no surprise that there are many to choose from. We realize that each individual will have their own wants and expectations when it comes to a certification, and therefore, the best product will vary from one individual to the next. For our purposes, we chose our list of best personal training certifications based on NCCA Accreditation and national recognition, curriculum content, study materials and programming, exam difficulty, and price point.

NCCA Accreditation and National Recognition

In partnership with the government, the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) was created to develop the standards that voluntary certification programs in all professions and industries must adhere to. Said “standards” are referred to as the NCCA’s Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Programs and were the first standards developed by the credentialing industry for professional certification programs. The goal of the standards is to ensure the health, welfare, and safety of the public. Having an NCAA Accreditation makes a certification that much more credible. Therefore, we included only certifications that have this accreditation.

Curriculum Content

While most personal training certification programs will cover the basics of movement, anatomy, and nutrition for training the general fitness population, some certs will focus more heavily on specific fields. If you are interested in training high-level athletes or clients with special needs, you’ll want to find a certification that has deep coverage of those areas. We looked at the specific curriculums to see which ones focused on areas that future personal trainers would most likely be interested in.

Study Materials

While most programs have similar study materials, some offer study materials that will appeal to different types of learners. You’ll often find online written materials, but more visual or auditory learners may want to search out certification programs that offer video and audio content as well. Some also offer access to student forums for group study and one-on-one tutoring as well. We included a wide range of study aids to help students with a variety of learning styles.

Exam Difficulty

The whole point of going through a personal training course is to learn enough to pass the exam that proves your ability to provide high-quality coaching to clients, so the exam should be somewhat difficult to pass. That said, it should still be accessible. The programs that we included here provide study aids, practice tests, and periods in which you can study up and retake exams if you don’t pass the first time.

Price Point

Personal training certification programs can vary in price, depending on the materials they provide, the accreditation they have, and the time it takes to complete the course. There are also added costs, including physical textbooks and fees for retaking exams. In this list, we’ve included programs that range in price, from high-end certifications that are loaded with study aids and materials to more cost-effective ones that don’t come with as many bells and whistles.

The Benefits of Having a Personal Training Certification

A personal training certification is a necessity for anyone looking to be a trainer in a reputable fitness institution. Taking the time to earn a cert shows that you put in the effort to acquire the knowledge and skill that are required to help someone achieve their fitness goals. Along the way, you will develop a knowledge of anatomy and physiology, gain the ability to learn how to write programming for clients, and build credibility in the fitness industry.

Credibility

Training shouldn’t be taken lightly, and if clients are smart, they’ll want to know that the person creating programs for them isn’t only in good shape themselves but also understands the human anatomy and principles behind creating a cohesive and progressive training program. Having a certification can provide this credibility to your clients.

Knowledge of Anatomy

While technically anyone can train a client, a good trainer understands the human body and the way in which muscles, joints, and skeletal structure work. By getting a personal training certification, you’ll learn all about the human anatomy and skeleton, as well as be able to recognize compensations and muscle imbalances.

Ability to Write Progressive and Adaptive Programming and Modifications

Again, the actual act of writing a fitness program can be done by nearly anyone who knows exercises. However, when it comes to programming, it’s important to know what level to start at, how to adapt training protocol to fit a client’s needs and goals, and at what speed to progress their programming. It’s also important to know how to modify or change a program if a client has comorbidities or any injuries. By studying and receiving a fitness certification, you’ll learn how to write individualized programming for clients, as well as the  periodization of programming .

Professionalism and Client Relationships

If you’re new to the fitness field, it’s not necessarily going to be the easiest field to break into, meaning you will probably have to work to get some clients at the beginning. Personal Training Certifications teach you skills to help build up your clientele, make sales, and have a successful fitness career.

How Much Do Training Certifications Cost?

Each certification has a different price, and even within one organization, they may offer different packages or bundles when it comes to getting a personal training certification (an online versus online and in-person option, etc.).

In general, most personal training certifications range anywhere from around $400 to $2,000, depending on what study materials are included, whether or not you add on specialized certifications, and what kind of student support is offered. Other add-ons can include physical textbooks, online tutoring, and fees for retaking exams.

What to Consider Before Buying a Personal Training Certification

Selecting a personal training certification program is as individualized as selecting a personal trainer. While all of the best personal training certification programs will provide you with the knowledge you need to help clients achieve their goals, they can vary in several ways, including programming, study materials, and the support they offer. When you’re looking for a cert program, consider your ideal clientele, your learning style, and exactly where you want your career to go.

Program and Study Materials

When you’re considering a certification program, it pays to know who your ideal client is. If you want to focus on the general fitness population, all of the programs on this list will equip you. But if you’re looking to train a specific demographic like advanced athletes or special population clients, it pays to find a certification with an emphasis on these types of training.

A person working out using dumbbells with a gym partner.

Also, be sure to read how the certification you’re considering delivers its course material. While you’ll find online written materials in all of these programs, some offer physical textbooks, as well as video and audio content for students. There are also online forums for group study and one-on-one tutoring available with some of these programs if you don’t want to work alone. If you have test anxiety, many of these programs also offer practice exams and quizzes to help you prepare for your final exam. Be sure to do a deep dive into the course materials of whatever program you’re considering to make sure it caters to your learning style.

Support Throughout and After the Program

Some people prefer to study alone, while others work best with a personal instructor or in a group setting. If you work best with others or want some extra accountability, be sure you choose a certification that offers help through group or trainer forums or expert and/or peer guidance. These study aids can also be useful if you find yourself getting stuck in a certain section of your educational materials.

A person working out with a barbell and being coached.

You may want to look into the options and offerings when it comes to job placement post-completion of the certification. Some programs cover the business side of personal training, including marketing and client relations, and others offer perks like a free professional website after completing the program, both of which can be a huge help to someone just starting out in the field.

Continuing Education

As you shop around for a certification program, make sure it has the resources you need to further your career and expertise. Almost all fitness certifications require recertification, so make sure you read and understand what’s required in order for you to recertify and how often you’ll need to. Certifications can last from a year to five years or more, so make sure that you’re willing and able to recertify as often as necessary to keep your certification active.

Also, many of the certifications offer add-on certifications for becoming a nutritional and wellness coach or coaching for specific activities like running or yoga. If you want to develop more skills and broaden your client base, check to see what other offerings the organization you’re getting your personal training certification with offers.

It’s important that, as a personal trainer, you have the confidence and ability to write adaptable, progressive, efficient programming based on your individual client’s wants, needs, and goals. While there is some debate about whether or not you need to have a personal training certification to train individuals, there’s no denying that through studying and obtaining a certification, you’re forced to learn about the human anatomy, how muscles work together, ways to correct and fix muscle imbalances, as well as how to write and progress programming correctly.

You’ll also learn a lot about the industry itself, as well as tips and tricks to hopefully have a successful and fulfilling career. While the certification you choose is up to you, rest assured that all of these NCCA Accredited personal training certifications will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to confidently train individuals to help them achieve their fitness goals.

Why do I need a personal training certification?

As mentioned above, yes, anyone who has knowledge of a gym and exercises could train a client. However, that doesn’t mean they should be. As a trainer, it’s important to make sure you fully understand the human anatomy and skeletal system, as well as progressive programming  and adapting fitness goals to your client’s wants and needs. As a trainer, you need to be able to train your clients confidently and do your best to prevent them from getting any injuries.

How much do personal training certifications cost?

Personal training certifications can cost anywhere from hundreds of dollars to over a thousand dollars, depending on the certification’s accreditation, the study materials and resources that it provides, and any additional options, fees or specialty certifications that are available.

What’s the best personal training certification?

The best certification will always vary from individual to individual. When looking through the different personal training certification offerings, it’s important to first identify what you’re looking for in a certification. Are you looking to work with a specific type of clientele, or are you just looking to work with the general fitness population ? Are you hoping to train athletes and maybe later on also get a nutrition certification or a TRX-specific certification?

It’s important to know what you hope to get out of the personal training certification in order to choose the best one to help you achieve your goals. That said, right now, our favorite personal training certification is the ISSA Personal Training Certification for it’s comprehensive curriculum, variety of learning methods, and online student forums for group study.

They design customized training programs, provide nutritional guidance, and offer support and motivation to help clients achieve their competition goals and present their best physique on stage.

While personal trainers primarily focus on one-on-one sessions with individual clients, fitness trainers may work with small groups or lead fitness classes in addition to providing personalized training sessions.
  • Nutrition Coaches : Nutrition coaches specialize in providing guidance, education, and support to individuals seeking to improve their dietary habits, manage weight, and optimize their nutrition for health and performance. Nutrition coaches can offer fitness guidance and exercise recommendations alongside their nutrition counseling services.
  • Pilates Instructors : Pilates instructors specialize in teaching the Pilates method, a form of low-impact exercise that focuses on strengthening muscles, improving flexibility, and enhancing body awareness and posture. What is the workplace of a Personal Trainer like?

The workplace of a personal trainer can vary depending on their employment setting and client preferences. Many personal trainers work in fitness centers, gyms, or health clubs, where they have access to a variety of exercise equipment, facilities, and amenities to conduct training sessions. In these environments, personal trainers may have dedicated training areas or workstations where they meet with clients and lead workouts, providing a supportive and motivating atmosphere for fitness enthusiasts to achieve their goals.

Additionally, personal trainers may also offer in-home training services, traveling to clients' residences to conduct workouts in the comfort and convenience of their own space. This allows clients to receive personalized attention and guidance without the need to commute to a gym, making it a popular option for individuals with busy schedules, mobility limitations, or a preference for privacy. In-home training sessions typically involve minimal equipment or portable exercise tools, allowing trainers to adapt workouts to the available space and resources.

Furthermore, personal trainers may work outdoors in parks, recreational areas, or community spaces, leading group fitness classes, boot camps, or outdoor training sessions. Outdoor workouts offer the benefits of fresh air, natural scenery, and a change of environment, creating a dynamic and engaging fitness experience for clients. Trainers may utilize bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, or portable equipment to facilitate outdoor workouts and provide clients with a fun and challenging fitness experience.

Fitness Trainer vs Personal Trainer

The terms "fitness trainer" and "personal trainer" are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences between the two roles:

Fitness Trainer:

  • Scope of Practice: A fitness trainer typically refers to a broader category of professionals who specialize in guiding individuals through exercise programs to improve their overall fitness levels. They may work in various settings such as gyms, fitness centers, or community centers, leading group fitness classes or providing general fitness guidance.
  • Group Settings: Fitness trainers often work with multiple clients simultaneously, leading group exercise classes or fitness boot camps. They may focus on general fitness goals such as weight loss, cardiovascular health, muscle toning, or improving overall physical conditioning.
  • General Guidance: Fitness trainers may offer general fitness advice, exercise recommendations, and support to clients without providing personalized one-on-one training sessions. They may assist clients with using gym equipment, demonstrating exercises, and promoting proper exercise techniques.

Personal Trainer:

  • Individualized Attention: A personal trainer, on the other hand, specializes in providing personalized fitness guidance and one-on-one training sessions tailored to individual clients' needs, goals, and preferences. They work closely with clients to develop customized exercise programs, provide accountability, and deliver individualized attention and support.
  • Goal-Oriented: Personal trainers focus on helping clients achieve specific fitness goals, whether it's weight loss, muscle gain, improved athletic performance, or rehabilitation from injury. They conduct assessments, track progress, and adjust workout plans accordingly to ensure clients' success.
  • Client-Centered Approach: Personal trainers prioritize the individual needs and preferences of their clients, offering personalized attention, motivation, and guidance to help them overcome challenges, stay motivated, and achieve lasting results. They may also provide additional services such as nutritional guidance, lifestyle coaching, and accountability support to address clients' holistic wellness needs.

In summary, while both fitness trainers and personal trainers play important roles in helping individuals improve their health and fitness levels, personal trainers offer a higher level of individualized attention and customization in their services, focusing on specific client goals and providing personalized support throughout their fitness journey. All personal trainers are fitness trainers, but not all fitness trainers provide the level of individualized attention and customization that personal trainers offer.

Pros and Cons of Being a Personal Trainer

Becoming a personal trainer can be a rewarding career choice, but like any profession, it has its own set of pros and cons. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of being a personal trainer:

  • Helping Others: Personal trainers have the opportunity to positively impact clients' lives by helping them achieve their fitness goals, improve their health, and enhance their overall well-being. Witnessing clients' progress and transformations can be incredibly fulfilling and gratifying.
  • Flexibility: Personal trainers often have flexible work hours and the ability to create their own schedules, allowing for a better work-life balance. They can choose to work part-time or full-time, and may have the flexibility to work in different settings such as gyms, studios, or as independent contractors.
  • Passion for Fitness: For individuals passionate about fitness and leading an active lifestyle, being a personal trainer allows them to turn their passion into a profession. Personal trainers have the opportunity to share their knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm for fitness with others, making a positive impact on their clients' lives.
  • Variety: Personal training is a dynamic and varied profession, offering opportunities to work with clients of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels. Trainers can design customized workout programs, lead group fitness classes, or specialize in specific areas such as sports performance, rehabilitation, or functional training.
  • Irregular Income: Income as a personal trainer can be unpredictable, especially for those who are self-employed or work on commission. Trainers may experience fluctuations in income due to factors such as client cancellations, seasonal trends, or changes in market demand.
  • Physical Demands: Personal training can be physically demanding, requiring trainers to demonstrate exercises, spot clients, and maintain energy and enthusiasm throughout multiple training sessions. Trainers may also be at risk for overuse injuries or burnout if they do not prioritize self-care and proper rest.
  • Client Retention: Building and maintaining a client base can be challenging, particularly for new or inexperienced trainers. Retaining clients requires excellent communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to deliver results consistently, which may take time to develop.
  • Continuing Education: Personal training is an evolving field, and trainers must stay updated on the latest fitness trends, research, and industry standards. Continuing education courses, certifications, and workshops may be necessary to stay competitive and advance in the profession, requiring a significant investment of time and money.

Step-By-Step Guide to Starting a Personal Training Business

Personal trainer standing on outdoors

Congratulations! You passed your online exam and have earned your personal trainer certification . Now comes the time when it's necessary to decide where you will work and how you will start your personal training business.

This blog will provide nine tips for starting an independent personal training business. Keep in mind that starting a business is a lengthy process with several legal implications, so there are many nuances that are not covered within this guide.

With that said, let’s dive in!

No matter which field you work in, being an entrepreneur and starting a business require a lot of energy and effort; nowhere is this more true than in the fitness industry. When it comes to promoting a fitness business and gaining customers, it will take time to develop a client base.

Plan on taking three-to-six months at the minimum to establish a revenue stream through a personal training business. When you're just starting your personal training career , whether, in real life or online, clients won't just find you. You have to hustle to get out and find them, so get to it!

2. Do Your Research

Starting a business means you’re not going to be working for an employer and instead will become an entrepreneur. You may want to research whether it is worth your time and resources to start a business entity like a limited liability company (LLC), which can separate your assets from that of your business. These rules vary from state-to-state; spend a little time to research what would work best where you live.

3. Invest in Liability Insurance

Where will you provide personal training services? Will you be paying for a space in a facility, or do you plan on working in clients’ homes? In either case, it will be necessary to invest in liability insurance. Most facilities that allow personal trainers to see clients will require this. If you’re going into clients’ homes, it's a good idea because, like forming an LLC to separate your business from your assets, it could protect you from any liability in the (unlikely) event a client becomes injured. As an NASM Certified Personal Trainer, you have access to an affordable liability insurance program .

4. Scope Out the Facility

When scoping out your facility here are 4 really helpful questions to consider asking before you make any decisions. Only after you have weighed the potential answers to these questions should pick a facility.

  • If you do decide to work as a contractor, where you are paying rent for space in a facility, what type of support, if any, will the facility offer?
  • Will you have the opportunity to meet with new members of the facility?
  • Will you be able to solicit existing members, or will you be required to do your marketing to bring clients in?
  • How is the facility managed? It may be a popular place to work out. Still, if it's not professionally managed, you may want to consider whether it's worth your time to establish a formal business relationship.

5. Invest in the Right Equipment

If you decide to market yourself to clients in their homes or offer workouts in a location like a park, that will require you to invest in some exercise equipment. That's because you'll want to be sure to have what you need to successfully apply the different stages of the NASM Optimum Performance Training™ (OPT™) Model of program design.

From medicine balls to rubber resistance to kettlebells to adjustable dumbbells, there are a number of options. Your budget and ability to transport them to the locations where you will be seeing clients will help determine the best equipment to suit your needs.

If you are going to offer workouts at a park, make sure you check with the local park department to see if any permits are required.

For example, in the city of San Diego, it is okay to train one or two people at a time in a city-managed park. Still, groups over the size of four require a permit issued by the park authority (which requires having the proper liability insurance).

Graham King, the owner of Urban Fitness in Washington, DC, started his business by offering workouts in a park and has grown to have three locations. As Mr. King demonstrates, park workouts can be an excellent option for starting a fitness empire, but you want to be sure you do it correctly.

6. Consider Online Coaching Options

If you're going to offer online personal trainer programs, how will you market your services and deliver the workouts? Will you sell static programs or offer to coach through an online service? Another option is to provide live coaching via apps like FaceTime, Zoom, or Facebook Live.

Kira Stokes, an NASM Certified Personal Trainer in New York City, teaches live classes and works with clients in person. She also has evolved to offer a successful app based on her 'Stoked Method' that reaches thousands of people a month, in addition to training clients online through video conferencing.

The point is that technology has now made it possible for personal trainers to provide fitness solutions to clients anywhere in the world as long as they have a high-speed internet connection and space to exercise in. Like any other business, there is tremendous opportunity in online coaching, but it will take time to be successful.

7. Identify Your Target Market

Whether you are offering your services live or online, who is your target demographic? Who are the clients that will receive the most significant benefit from your services? It's one thing to offer a variety of different types of workout programs.

Still, if you identify a specific target market, that could help you develop your messaging for how you market your services.

For example, offering weight loss and muscle-sculpting programs in an area with a large population of older adults may not resonate with an audience. Who lives in your immediate area? What types of clients do you want to work with? Take some time to brainstorm a target demographic like new moms, older adults, or teenage athletes, then identify the most effective method for communicating with them to attract and earn their business.

8. Create a Brand

Once you identify a target demographic, how will you communicate with that demographic so they can understand the benefit of your fitness services? Marketing is branding, and branding is marketing; creating a brand identity can help you to communicate with potential clients.

When you think of tissues or adhesive bandages, brand names like Kleenex or Band-Aid tend to pop in your head right away. This is called 'top-of-mind' brand recognition and is the power of developing a recognizable brand identity.

Ms. Stokes used the convenience of her last name to establish her 'Stoked Method,' an instantly recognizable brand that has developed a strong following for her workout programs and coaching services.

9. Research Payment Methods

Whether you offer live or online services, how will your clients pay you for your time or the programs you sell? Just like technology has made it possible to reach clients anywhere in the globe, it will be necessary to research payment methods.

You can start an account with PayPal, Venmo, Square, or any other service so that you can be sure that you are adequately compensated for your time and efforts.

A lot goes into starting a fitness business. There is no guarantee of success, but if you have the hustle, put in the work, and apply these nine steps, then you will be well on your way to a long, rewarding and potentially lucrative career as a fitness professional.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS AND ADDITIONAL ADVICE

If you choose to work for an employer like a health club or fitness studio, they should have training and development programs in place that will educate you on what you need to do to work in their operation successfully.

The role of the fitness manager is to support you as you start your business. Listen to their advice because they know what works. Also, look for the more experienced, established personal trainers and ask for their help on how to be successful in that business model.

ONE LAST THING TO CONSIDER

If you plan on opening a facility, it requires several different steps from finding the best real estate to hiring the right contractors for the build-out. Therefore, these recommendations are for those of you who are considering becoming an independent personal trainer either contracting with a facility, working in clients’ homes, or offering online coaching programs.

When is the best time to visit Moscow? | Weather, budget, events by month

When is the best time to visit Moscow

Discover when is the best time to visit Moscow. In this blog post, I will talk about weather, budget and other things to know to choose the best time when to go to Moscow for you. I cannot account the times when we went in Moscow. Here are the pros and the cons of each month taking all main criteria into account!

I will first describe the main criteria that will help you choose when to go to Moscow:

  • Climate in Moscow: temperatures and weather

Special events in Moscow

  • Budget and visa

Then I will talk about each season (go directly to this party if you already have an idea of the desired departure date):

  • Advantages and disadvantages month by month

The weather cannot be the only criterion to decide when is the best time to visit Moscow for you. Even if the temperatures drop low, Moscow in December is just magical! This is why I advise to take into account several criteria at the same time. Also remember that it takes at least a month to get the Russian visa.

When to go to Moscow: climate and weather

The seasons are well marked. The mid-season months are not necessarily the best for the weather. However, they are not necessarily to be avoided, because, as we will see later, Moscow is a city that changes all the time and the prices can be more attractive. For example, for a lot of people winter is the best time to visit Moscow.

Weather in Moscow. Moscow is inland, making the city “more protected” from changing weather. For example, the weather is much more changeable in St. Petersburg. On the other hand, the weather in Moscow is more and more scorching in summer, we can then easily reach 30 degrees (for the Russians, it’s already the heat wave).

Moscow temperatures

As soon as you think of Russia, you want to do “Brrrr”. Let’s prepare our down jackets! Indeed, the Russian climate is not the mildest on the planet. However, it all depends on the region, because the country is very large. Moscow is almost at the same latitude as Copenhagen. As Moscow is relatively far from the coast, there is a pronounced continental climate. It is hot in summer and cold in winter.

In addition, global warming is there. For several decades, annual average temperatures have always been recorded above the past. I suggest you look at the averages over the past five years to be as close as possible to reality:

Sunshine and precipitation

Sunshine. This is surprising, but there is more sunshine in Moscow than in Paris or even in Berlin: 1,731 hours in Moscow, compared to 1661 in Paris and 1626 in Berlin.

Duration of the day in winter. We had questions about the length of the day in winter. So, here are a few things. As in Europe, the shortest days are in December. In Moscow, at the end of December, the sun rises around 9 a.m. and sets around 4 p.m. Then the day gets bigger until the end of June, when the day is the longest.

Precipitation. There is more precipitation in Moscow than in Paris (705mm against 637mm).

When is the best time to visit Moscow: interesting events

Moscow is a city that moves a lot. It is even said that this city never sleeps. So there are a lot of events, forums, exhibitions, conferences. Here I’m going to talk about the main recurring events that punctuate the year and that may help you decide when to go to Moscow.

End of year celebrations in Moscow

December 31 rather than Christmas. The Russians are eagerly awaiting the holiday season. Here on December 31 is like Christmas with us. Religion, “opium of the people” according to Marx, and, above all, its official absence marked the country during the Soviet years. This then reinforced the celebration of December 31, while Orthodox Christmas is January 7.

Russian calendar. In addition, it should be known that the first week of January is a bank holiday. Many Russians therefore do not work during this period. Europe also greatly influences the habits of Muscovites. Consequently, the Christmas markets start in early December and, for some, continue until early February!

Fairytale atmosphere. If you are wondering when to go to Moscow and you love the holiday mood, then the end of December – early January, and even February, is for you! There are many things to do during this time: for example, Christmas markets, decorations, winter games, skating rinks. In 2016, Moscow opened the largest ice rink in Europe. In short, the city is doing a lot of entertainment during this period and the general atmosphere is at the top! However, everything comes at a cost. You can see more detail below in the article, month by month.

When to go to Moscow

Visit Moscow in May

May 1 and 9 are two big festivals in Russia. Both dates are known worldwide. May 9 in Russia is May 8 with us in France. The signature that marks the end of the Second World War. The shift day is explained by … the difference in time zone.

The May 9 holiday is a very important holiday for the Russians. The Soviet human losses amounted to millions. So there are many families who have been directly affected by the war. The first big parade was organized by Stalin on June 24, 1945 in Red Square in Moscow. Later each year the USSR and then Russia organized a parade on May 9. Here is the video of the first parade dating from 1945 in color, then the last – that of 2016.

A disadvantage of the beginning of May. For the planned events, Red Square will not be completely empty. There are always installations for May 9, but also rehearsals. So, to the question “when is the best time to visit Moscow”, I would not say that May is the best one. You can find out more in the article “Moscow in autumn” below.

Throughout the year, the Moscow City Hall organizes free events (festivals, small markets, concerts, etc.) in the Red Square and in the streets of the city center. For example, there are two major interesting events:

  • Festival of Lights “Around the World”: in 2019, it was from September 28 to October 4.
  • Anniversary of the city of Moscow always celebrated the first weekend of September.

When is the best time to visit Moscow: budget, price seasonality, visa

Most touristy periods. Many travelers come to Moscow from May to October. This is the period when we see the most tourists in Moscow. In addition, many are also those who come at the end of December and at the beginning of January for the New Year. The beginning of May and the first week of January are also strongly requested, in particular by the Russians (school holidays, public holidays).

Accommodation. Hotel rates therefore necessarily increase during these periods of the year. But they do not go so far as to triple. To give an idea, count at least 80 euros in the city center for a double room with breakfast. You can read more about the districts of Moscow in my article: Where to stay in Moscow?

Guides and tours. Also take into account that during these periods it will be more difficult to find a guide at the last moment. It’s best to do it 2-3 months in advance. There will be more waiting or difficulty obtaining tickets during the months of high tourist influx: late December, early January, May, June, July, August.

Visa for Russia. The cost of the visa does not change depending on the month of the year. On the other hand, the deadlines can be longer if you make the request for the high tourist season (from May to October). Allow about a month. Getting the Russian visa is not complicated, there is a procedure to follow.

In Russia, the seasons are divided as follows:

  • Fall: September, October, November.
  • Winter: December, January, February.
  • Spring: March, April, May.
  • Summer: June, July, August.

Discover Moscow in autumn: when is the best time to visit Moscow in autumn?

From the beginning of September, we feel that the temperatures begin to drop gradually, especially at night.

Moscow in September

More and more travelers are choosing the month of September to go to Moscow. Because it is not cold yet and there are fewer tourists than in summer. Prices drop slightly, but remain higher than in the lean months of the year. There is also the city’s birthday on the first weekend in September, but also the “Around the World” festival towards the end of the month.

Moscow in October

You are likely to come across the colors of autumn from the beginning of October. The accommodation prices are starting to drop gradually. There is less waiting in the places to visit. Temperatures are not very low: during the day they are generally around +6 degrees. On the other hand, the only negative point can be the cost of plane tickets, if you leave during the French school holidays.

Moscow in November

It’s one of the least calm! Temperatures drop and can approach zero during the day in mid-November. Hotel rates are low, there are few tourists, and therefore less waiting in museums. It’s easier to get tickets for the Kremlin Palace of Armor, which can be very difficult in the summer. Guides also have more availability. So why not go to Moscow in November?

Discover Moscow in winter: when is the best time to visit Moscow in winter?

Winter is a very nice time to go to Moscow, because the Christmas and New Year decorations are installed from the beginning of December and are not removed until the end of February. To learn more about the different activities in winter, read this article: What to do in Moscow in winter? If winter temperatures scare you, check out Moscow in the spring (see below).

Moscow in december

Normally, negative daytime temperatures set in, although the weather can vary significantly from year to year. In general, from mid-December the snow is durable. It is from December 20 that more and more travelers come to Moscow. December 31st is celebrated like Christmas in France. Accommodation rates are higher from mid-December. It’s also more complicated to find a guide at the last moment. Furthermore, as in Europe, the days of December are the shortest of the year. But if you want to mark New Years Day, you will have lots of memories!

Moscow in january

January is also a very festive month. The first week of January is a public holiday in Russia. Besides, it’s also a week of Russian school holidays. There are more people in the streets, museums and everywhere in the city. To find out more about this time of year (Christmas markets, itineraries, etc.), read: Christmas and New Years in Moscow . Prices remain high during this week, but drop from mid-January.

Moscow in February

It’s the second quietest month of the year. In February, winter clearly takes its ease. The temperatures are the lowest, it’s a real winter! The days are longer in February than in December. So we’re enjoying the day more, and with the snow it’s really nice, because the weather in Moscow in February is pretty sunny. Accommodation rates are at their lowest, and the decorations are still there. So, if you are looking for when to go to Moscow, if the cold does not scare you and you appreciate the snowy landscapes, why not consider the month of February?

Discover Moscow in spring: when is the best time to visit Moscow in spring?

Spring is a contrasting period between March, which is still quite cold, and May, when we really feel the arrival of summer.

Moscow in March

The ice and snow begin to melt around mid-March. Winter is coming in March, but spring is not quite there yet. It’s the third quietest month of the year. It is therefore possible to visit the city more quietly. Accommodation prices are low, guides are available. The weather in Moscow in March is milder than in February. In addition, the days are longer, so you can take many walks.

Moscow in April

It is only from mid-April that we begin to feel the beginnings of sunny days. The weather in Moscow in spring and April in particular is getting milder and colder: we can expect +7 during the day. In addition, there are not many travelers yet and we fear to enjoy the places more quietly, but we feel that the start of the tourist season is approaching. Accommodation rates are lower than in May.

Moscow in May

The early May holidays attract many travelers to Moscow. There are also many Russians who come to the capital on public holidays. It is therefore advisable to plan visits in advance to avoid queuing once there. Red Square can be closed or partially closed for rehearsals for the May 9 parade, the same day and one or two days after. More info in: Moscow in May: events, budget, what to do?

Discover Moscow in summer: when is the best time to visit Moscow in summer?

All summer months are great, if you take temperatures into account. The weather in Moscow in summer is quite pleasant. However, in recent years, there have been great heat peaks or heat waves in July (30 degrees during the day).

Moscow in June

From June, you can take long walks in the city’s parks, very numerous and much appreciated by the locals. Boat trips are more enjoyable from June. On the other hand, the prices of accommodation in Moscow are higher than in the lean months. There are also more tourists. Book your hotel, tours and activities in advance.

Moscow in july

July is the hottest month, but we’re not on +40. Moscow is a city inland and therefore there is little fresh air, if it is very hot. We can do lots of walks to discover the city. We have written several complete itineraries so as not to miss anything of Moscow in our special Moscow travel guide. It also contains tips to save time and enjoy the city off the beaten track, as there are so many tourists during this time of year.

Moscow in August

Temperatures are starting to drop gradually, but there are still so many people. In order to be sure of the choice of accommodation, I advise you to book in advance. The same goes for guided tours or entrance tickets to the Kremlin. It’s also a good time to discover the city differently by going to places that are less touristy and more frequented by locals.

When is the best time to go to Moscow? In summary!

The best time to discover Moscow depends on the criteria you want to favor: the weather, the budget, the tranquility of the visits, the special events to be experienced on site.

In summary:

  • The peak tourist season in Moscow begins in early May and ends in late September.
  • Late December and early January is the best time to experience the holiday mood, but it comes at a cost.
  • End of January, February, March, beginning of April, November are the quietest months of the year, when you can visit the city more calmly and on a reduced budget.
