Choosing a travel rod for anglers who like to pack light and carry a fishing rod in their luggage on every where they travel requires a little planning and view of the options and fish you think you might encounter on your travels. We reviewed a wide gamut of rods and came up with a lot of options to consider as well as some great recommendations for which fishing rods we would suggest for a lot of different types of fishing and travel.

Things like size of the rod when disassembled, number of pieces, rod case, roll or bag, type of rod, how you will transport it, whether a telescoping rod makes sense and more need to be considered before choosing the best travel rod for your fishing plans.

Travel rods can come from 2 pieces up to 5 pieces not to mention the telescoping travel rod options out there. You might want to fit the rod in a suitcase, if so more pieces will break down into a smaller foot print. Or you might carry it with you which might give you more options for rods. You might want a hard case to protect the rod if you’re worried about TSA or some other party damaging your rods in transit. Or a rod wrap may suffice if it’s tucked inside of another hard case suitcase.

Know Your Travel Rods

Then there are the types of rod to consider including spinning travel rods, casting travel rods, telescoping travel rods as well as travel fly rods or specialty rods like travel swimbait rods or travel trout or panfish rods. Or any combination of the aforementioned.

If you plan to fish with light lures and light line, then a spinning travel rod might be the best option. If you plan to look for big bluegills or crappies specifically on your travels, then a long telescoping rod might make more sense or a small spinning rod like a trout rod might give you a lot of options for trout and panfish.

If you’re going for larger quarry, you will want a beefier rod that has a reel that can hold heavier line. Usually a baitcasting travel rod makes sense for bass, or big fish like walleye, pike, musky, stripers, etc.

Specialty rods like travel swimbait rods or extra long jigging rods might be just the ticket for probing unknown waters for specific types of fishing like jigging brush for crappie or casting oversized swimbaits for trophy bass and stripers.

Of course if you’re in to fly fishing, then a travel fly rod is hard to beat. There are some super high end and middle of the road options that are great rods that make a 9-foot fly rod fit into an over night travel bag with the travel fly rod option.

CONSIDER TELESCOPING RODS FOR TRAVEL

For some, a telescoping rod is an easy spur of the moment travel rod option to probe some nearby waters to see if they have fish available. I have buddies that keep telescoping rods in their trucks at all times and will break it out on their travels or while taking a lunch or after work on a work trip. It’s a quick and simple option.

Most of time telescoping rods are a bit lower quality. Or at least that was the case back when the only option was a low end push button spin cast combo for small panfish. There are, however, some newer options bringing this back as a real viable option for bass and panfish.

A Travel Combo Might Make More Sense

You can buy travel rods that are a rod and reel combo. This is often the case with telescoping options. But there are some better quality options in the multi-piece travel rods with a decent spinning reel. Most of the time. I want the best rod I can get and a good reel in my bag so I’m not fighting my equipment in the limited amount of time I get to fish on my travels. Especially those spur-of-the-moment unplanned fishing trips while traveling.

But when you get to a location and wished you had a rod and reel, a decent priced telescoping rod/reel combo can get you in the fish on an unexpected hot spot quickly and easily.

You Need a Travel Rod Case, Bag or Roll

Anymore your travel rod is going to come in a hard case, a roll or a bag. Regardless you need to take care to protect the pieces of the rod or the rod while it is compartmentalized so it’s not damaged in your travels.

A hard case might be a cloth case with a hard shell inside of it that zips closed on the end and the multiple pieces slide into little sleeves inside of it. Or it might be a hard outer shell with a soft interior that keeps your guides and blank parts protected. These are nice when you plan to carry your travel rods separate from your luggage. Or keep them in a vehicle on your travels.

A travel rod roll is just a cloth sleeve with individual pockets for each piece of the blank and then you roll it up with flap that closes on one end and tie it off with the attached ties. These can be nice for putting a rod or two into your other travel bags or a small compartment in your vehicle.

A travel bag can be just a cloth bag or a padded foam bag that houses and protects the rod simultaneously. I’m a fan of these as they keep your pieces from falling out as sometimes happens with rolls. And they keep the blank pieces with a bit of added protection. The padded bags are ideal in my opinion.

Best Travel Rod Brands

In the freshwater space, the best travel rod makers are often synonymous with the best rod makers. Makers like Daiwa, Shimano, St. Croix, Megabass, Ark Rods, Fenwick, and others have really solid travel rod options. Others that many don’t know offer travel rods have good options like Favorite, Bass Pro, and BnM Poles.

Here are the travel rod brands we reviewed and liked:

  • Favorite Fishing
  • B’n’M Poles

Having said all that, let’s take a closer look at some of our personal favorites in various travel rod categories.

Best Telescoping Travel Combo

Daiwa travel combo.

We chose the Daiwa Travel Combo as the best combo because it comes with a good reel, telescoping rod that is better than most and it’s own sling carry bag that is big enough to put several travel rods and reels in. This combo compacts down to 26 inches making it a perfect option for any trip whether it be in a car or a plane.

The rod is a 7-foot, 2-inch Medium power fast action rod. It’s a solid rod and stayed extended as we fished with it. The reel is a 2-bearing Daiwa Crossfire LT 2500. Even though it’s only 2 bearings, it performed very smoothly and effortlessly with a very smooth drag. It’s a solid spinning combo and it’s offered in EVA or Cork grips.

The combo costs $149 but if you just want a good combo without messing around with pairing rods and reels, this is a quick easy choice.

Best Travel Rod for Bass

Shimano zodias travel rod.

The fact that Shimano took one of their best rod lines and converted it into a high-end bass travel rod got me excited. And when I got the new rod in my hand, I was very impressed. I am a big fan of the original Zodias line and was so excited to see this level of quality in a 5-piece travel rod.

This travel rod condenses down to 19 inches when packed, meaning you can literally take it anywhere. And when full assembled you have a very high quality rod full of all the features of the high end one-piece blanks. The 5-piece construction gives the rod more uniform bend than a 2-piece model would.

It has so much power and a steady consistent load when casting. You will forget it’s a travel rod by your second cast. It’s a high end rod that just happens to be in 5 pieces. It has a CI4+ reel seat for lightweight strength and a full carbon monocoque grip which eliminates the use of EVA giving a light rod more sensitivity.

Hi-Power X construction which makes the blanks outermost layer wrapped with carbon tape form that X appearance on the blank that gives more precise actions to the rods with more strength.

You can really lean into fish with this rod without worry. It’s one of the nicest travel rods we’ve tested.

Runner Up: Daiwa Ardito Travel Rod

This is another high-end rod that has been brought down to a travel rod form factor. This rod comes with a very nice hard case and it breaks down to 30 inches (32 in its case). It features a V-flex ferrule joint system. These ferrules don’t require you to jam the rod pieces all the way together and then struggle to separate them. You simply push them until they snug together and you are all set. You can break down and put the rod together in seconds and be fishing as fast as you can thread your line.

The rod has a high-modulus blank, Fuji Aluminum Oxide guides, unsanded micro-pitch blank, split Eva grip and machined nut hood. It’s a high quality rod that pairs nicely with your favorite bait caster. It comes in 7-foot medium, 7-foot medium heavy and 7-foot, 6-inch medium heavy.

Best All-Around / Saltwater Travel Rod

St. croix avid trek rod.

This is a finely crafted American rod with incredible blanks offering uniform performance, strength and ultra-perceptive sensitivity. The premium cork full grip, and quality blanks featuring St. Croix’s IPC mandrels, SCII high modulus carbon, slim profile ART ferrules, Sea Guide Hero hi-grade guides with zirconia rings and stainless gun smoke frames, sea guide hook keeper, and a 15-year-transferable warranty.

This rod can literally do it all. Going to Louisiana to fish the marshes for bass and redfish, this is your rod. Strong, light, smooth, sensitive and easy to pack. The 3-piece rod is 6-foot, 6-inch MH rod with a lot of power but great castability. This rod is a joy to fish with and you can expect it to last a long time with that kind of warranty.

Best Telescopic Travel Rod

Bass pro aventur1 telescoping rod.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Aventur1 telescoping rod. It features 6 sections but 8 guides for uniform castability and a nice line path while fighting fish. The unique guide system has floating guides as well as guides permanently affixed to the rod sections. So you won’t fight with line on the blank on this travel rod.

The 7-foot medium power rod fished really well and I was pretty taken aback at how nice this rod fished for $59. A rod that will likely always be in my travel plans. With an RT2 graphite blank, Fuji aluminum oxide guides, Fuji reel seat, with EVA split grips and X-Wrap rubber cork butt cap, this is a pretty functional telescoping rod for travel fishing.

Best Big Swimbait Travel Rod

F5 departure travel rods.

The folks at F5 Custom Rods make some of the nicest big swimbait rods available today. These are custom made rods from blanks to handles to accents. They are often very selective in how they build rods and you usually have to get lucky enough to catch a rod on a drop. However, the F5 Departure Travel Rods are often in stock and I picked up a H and XH rod a year or so back.

These are two of my favorite big swimbait rods that I use for crankdowns like the Bull Shad 4×4 and the Toxic Whippersnappers, for glides like the 86 Baits Doomrider, KGB Swimbaits Chad Shad or the Deps Slide Swimmer 250 and of course for my jointed swims like the Bull Shad 8 inch.

The rods are both 3-piece rods and are custom made with a full extra long camo EVA handle. The ones the often sell are split grips. The rod blanks are solid. Even with three pieces I had no issues heaving big baits like the Slide Swimmer which weighs 6 1/2 ounces.

They are going to run you about $289 a piece for these rods. But I am so happy to have them because I can take a pack of my favorite big baits and a very high-end swimbait rod literally everywhere I go to chase trophies all over the country and out of the country for that matter.

Best Travel Rod on a Budget

Favorite fishing army geo rod.

This is an impressive rod not only for the price but for how well this 4-piece rod fishes and fights fish. We caught some really quality bass on this rod this spring and it is a legit fun spinning rod to fish. I love that I threw it in my suitcase, loaded up and went to Arkansas and broke it out and caught a bunch of nice bass that were moving shallow to spawn.

Even my brother-in-law enjoyed fishing with this travel rod. And at $39, it’s a hard rod to pass up. The 4 pieces in their hard travel tube are 26 inches. The pieces are barely 23 inches. The rod is a 7-foot, 2-inch medium-heavy spinning rod. I used it to skip Senkos around shallow cover a lot this spring. And it sets a nice hook and has a ton of backbone to land big bass. Our biggest on it was 6 pounds, 4 ounces this spring.

Runner up: Ugly Stik GX2 4-piece Travel Combo

At $44 at Walmart, you can’t go wrong with this nearly indestructible travel rod. The Ugly Stik has been the staple of affordable travel rods. They can take abuse and continue to catch and land fish.

Best Trout Travel Rod

St. croix trout series pack rod  .

For the adventurer who needs a light and packable trout rod to get to remote locations, this is the Cadillac of adventure rods. This rod says trout, but it’s a dynamite bluegill, crappie and even smallmouth rod for remote streams and creeks. It’s a beautifully built rod at only 2.9 ounces and 3 pieces, it compacts down to be no added weight in your backpack.

I paired it with a small 1000 spinning reel and 4-pound line and really enjoyed fishing this rod a lot. It will become one of my staple creek travel rods now. It throws little baits effortlessly and had a nice backbone for such a light rod. A real joy to fish with.

Best Panfish Telescoping Rod

Bnm poles little mighty telescoping rod  .

I have to admit, I’m a little blow away by this rod. I grew up crappie and bluegill fishing with my father in Florida and Arkansas with telescoping fiberglass rods from B’n’M Poles. So I have a lot of nostalgia when it comes to these types of rod. But the new Little Mighty Rod is something special.

While it’s not technically a travel rod, it’s a telescoping rod that reaches out to 20 feet and breaks down to barely 22 inches. It looks like a bright orange track baton but it extends to a masterful reach out and touch a crappie or bluegill telescoping rod quickly.

One word of caution, be sure you extend the rod small sections first. So grab the string tab on the tip and pull it out that way. Don’t slide the sections out by dumping the open end out or you will have issues with sections getting out of order and blocking each other. Same for breaking it down. Big sections first and be sure to leave the string out when you put the cap on.

Other than that, I enjoyed testing this rod a lot. I honestly didn’t think much of it when I got it. But after using it I can think of all sorts of places I want to take and fish with this rod. Once you get the hang of maneuvering 20 feet of rod with a fish on the end it’s a pretty fun stick to fish with.

Other Travel Rod Considerations

Ark rods genesis rods.

This was my original travel rod and I’ve put a lot of miles on it. It’s caught fish in Nebraska, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. This is a two piece travel rod that comes with a nice padded bag.

Read our full Ark Genesis 2-piece travel rod review

The rod joins together nicely and fishes so well. The very narrow blanks are durable and sensitive. I’ve caught fish just about every way you can on these rods. I have the 6-foot, 8-inch MH and the 7-foot, 6-inch MH rods and have flipped, frogged, spinnerbait fished, jigged, cranked, popped a topwater popper and burned a buzz bait with these rods. A great option that gives no sacrifice in performance in a 2-piece travel rod.

SixGill Argos Travel Rods

A very nicely made travel pack rod, the Argos Travel Rod is a 4-piece rod built on a 24T Toray Carbon blank. Comes with a 25 inch travel case. It fishes like your nicest bass rod but you can tuck it under a jacket and take it with you anywhere. The rod loads nicely on the cast and has enough back bone with it’s 7-foot MH frame to fight any size bass you might tangle with. A very nice travel rod option.

Zebco 33 Spincast Telescopic Combo

This is an affordable option at $25 but it’s not made to handle big fish in my opinion. It’s a great rod for catching panfish around a campsite, or of the dock on vacation. But it’s not made for fishing for larger fish. The rod bends easily at the tip under load and the line cuts across the rod to the next guide. So just be cautious with bigger fish on this setup. But for $25, you can catch the heck out of a bunch of panfish with this setup.

Hardy Zephrus FWS Travel Fly Rod

I haven’t had a chance to review the latest offerings from Hardy yet, but one of my all time favorite travel rods is my Hardy Zephrus FWS Travel Fly Rod. It’s a 9-foot, 5-weight rod. It is the perfect pack rod for hiking into remote streams and chasing fish on the fly. This is the Ferrari of travel rods in my opinion. Everything is first class from the aluminum case, styled bag, ferrule covers, and beautiful craftsmanship on the Sintrix 440 blank.

Shimano Convergence Travel Rod

This 7-foot, 4-piece rod is another great do-it all travel rod. It’s a great rod for a lot of different species and lures in that 1/4 ounce to 3/4 ounce size. It breaks down to 25 inches so it will fit in almost all your bags and it comes in a nice hard case with a shoulder strap if you want to carry it on your back while you hike. It’s very well made and fished nicely with a variety of reels.

St. Croix Triumph Travel Rod

This work-horse travel rod serves a ton of different purposes. It’s 6-foot, 6-inch size makes it a great size for tight quarters. I loved fishing some small streams near the house with this rod. A fun little rod for wading creeks or winging around on bigger waters on your travels. It’s small form factor of 24 inches makes it a great pack rod to keep in your vehicle or throw in your bag on long trips. It’s a very nice blank divided into 4 pieces. It’s strong, sensitive and light. A great travel version of their very popular Triumph line.

The 5 Best Travel Fishing Rods for 2024

Whether you're going on a dedicated trip, or just want to get some casts in during the family vacation, it pays to be prepared

We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Learn more ›

Travel fishing rods are made for anglers on the go. Wherever you end up, there are new waters to seek out, so the addition of a dedicated travel fishing rod to the arsenal makes sense for aspiring travel anglers. The problem for many years was the lack of quality rods to meet the carry-on restrictions for fishermen traveling on planes. Multi-piece rods were much less common and inferior to more conventional rods; they were also more likely to break.

Thankfully, advances in technology and design have changed the landscape of angling travel. Rod companies are now able to provide traveling anglers with quality options, and the best travel fishing rods fish like their one-piece counterparts.

  • Best Budget & Best Combo: Ugly Stik GX2 Travel Spinning Combo
  • Best for Bass: Abu Garcia IKE Signature Series Travel Spinning Rod
  • Best for Saltwater: G. Loomis Escape GLX Series
  • Best Telescopic: KastKing Blackhawk II Telescopic Fishing Rod
  • Best Fly Rod: Orvis Clearwater

How We Picked the Best Travel Fishing Rods

My first travel-to-fish trip happened when I was seven. We ventured north to fish for northern pike and bass in the Thousand Islands area of the St. Lawrence River. Since that first trip, my wanderlust has persisted, spanning three continents, five countries, eleven states, and three Canadian provinces. I’ve carried rods to all of those places via airline, bush plane, panga, train, car, taxi, subway and hiking boots. In between those adventures, I’ve spent a lot of time talking with fishing industry professionals about travel fishing rods and other assorted gear. Cumulatively, this distilled experience proves highly useful in evaluating travel fishing tackle. While writing this review, I considered the following attributes:

  • Fishing Performance—comparative to one-piece rods
  • Packability
  • Materials and Construction

Best Travel Fishing Rods: Reviews & Recommendations

Ugly Stik GX2 Travel Spinning Combo is the best budget and best combo travel fishing rod.

  • Length(s): 5 feet (light power), 6 feet and 6 feet 6 inches (Both medium power)
  • Numbers of sections: 5 foot rod is 3 pieces; others are 4 pieces
  • Line Rating: Light: 4-10 pound; Medium: 6-15 pound
  • Strong, durable and sensitive graphite and fiberglass construction
  • More economical than buying individual components
  • Strong and durable Ugly Tuff stainless steel guides
  • Shakespeare four-bearing spinning reel, with double anodized aluminum spool
  • Cloth rod and reel travel bag offers only cosmetic protection; not suitable for checked luggage.

According to Shakespeare lore, the Ugly Stik received its now world-familiar moniker when a product management executive took one look at the first prototype blanks and said they were the ugliest he’d ever seen.

The most updated version is more aesthetically appealing, but it hasn’t lost its rugged durability or the signature clear tip segment. The Ugly Stik Travel Combo comes in three lengths and two power options (light and medium). Each rod is fitted with a solid Shakespeare four-bearing reel with oversized bail wire for added durability. And the entire combo is at a price point that won’t break the bank.

These travel outfits make a solid choice for those trips focused on activities other than angling where you just might be able to fit in a little fishing anyway. They also make excellent entry-level outfits for kids and fishing rods for beginners . From personal experience, I’ll also say that these rods can handle those unexpected trophies that have a knack for biting when you’re just helping the kids catch a few bluegills.

Abu Garcia IKE Signature Series Travel Spinning Rod is the best travel fishing rod for bass.

  • Length(s): 7 feet
  • Numbers of Sections: Four pieces—butt section, midsection and two tip sections for increased versatility
  • Tip Sections: medium light—for 1/8 to 5/8 ounce lures and medium for 1/4 to 3/4 ounce lures
  • Line Rating: medium light: 6-12 pound; medium: 8-14 pound
  • Two tip sections offers great versatility
  • Fishes like a one-piece rod
  • Excellent sensitivity
  • Doesn’t include a crush-proof case for checked luggage protection

Abu Garcia was smart to partner with Mike “Ike” Iaconelli in designing this rod. Twenty plus years as a bass tournament professional coupled with his additional experience as a city fishing enthusiast provided the ideal experiential foundation for crafting top notch travel fishing rods.

The Ike Signature Series Travel Spinning Rod is an exceptional value and an incredibly versatile fishing tool. Quality components are a significant part of the winning formula. The rod blanks are constructed from 36-ton graphite and finished rods have stainless steel guides and a high quality reel seat. The use of a continuous graphite ferrule is key to allowing this rod to fish like a one-piece rod. If all of this isn’t enough, then add in the best feature—the versatility provided with interchangeable tips. This combination allows you to fish an extended range of lures and finesse baits. Anglers looking for a more powerful bass fishing tool should consider checking out the casting rod version .

G. Loomis Escape GLX Series is the best travel fishing rod for saltwater.

  • Length(s): 7 feet in two power options, medium-light and medium
  • Numbers of Sections: three
  • Line Rating: Medium-light: 6-12 pound; Medium: 10-17 pound
  • Multi-taper design offers a superior blend of durability and performance
  • Nickel-Titanium RECOIL guides
  • High quality cork grip
  • Light weight
  • Difficult to find stock, at the moment

Very rarely will I say that a rod has the potential to enable a competent angler to catch more fish. The G. Loomis Escape GLX rods are an exception to this rule. Hands down, these are some of the finest fishing rods made today.

G. Loomis has been making fishing rods focused on performance since 1982. I bought my first GLX rod in 1999 and I still fish it today; I think that says a lot about both the quality and durability of the GLX line of rods. Loomis’ rod building expertise has led to superior travel rods that compromise nothing in a multi-piece design. Their proprietary Multi-taper Design process strengthens potential break points while reducing material application elsewhere. The result is strength and sensitivity. The Nickel-Titanium RECOIL guides used on these rods are amazingly tough and the cork grip provides a comfortable feel over days, months and years of fishing.

These rods are amazingly lightweight, given their strength, durability and ability to subdue large saltwater fish. This lightness in hand translates to greater comfort over a long day of fishing. The last cast of the day feels as effortless as the first.

GLX Escape travel spinning rods are available in two models. The medium power model is what I consider the ideal saltwater rod, able to handle large inshore species such as permit and bull redfish. In freshwater, this rod will handle most of the salmonid species, bass and pike. The medium-light model is also a phenomenal light saltwater rod, ideal for small bonefish, puppy drum and schoolie stripers. This rod is also a great crossover rod, whether for large trout, shad or smallmouth bass.

KastKing Blackhawk II Telescopic Fishing Rod is the best telescopic travel fishing rod.

  • Length(s): Casting —7 models from 6 feet, 8 inches to 8 feet; Spinning—7 models from 6 feet, 6 inches to 8 feet
  • Numbers of Sections: All models are telescopic
  • Line Ratings: 6-25 pound, depending on the model
  • Multiple models for diversity and flexibility
  • Quality materials and construction
  • Quick assembly
  • Still not as good as quality multi-piece rods
  • Segments can loosen after significant casting/fishing time

Though I’m not a telescopic rod fan, I see the usefulness of the concept, and the KastKing BlackHawk II is the best telescopic rod I’ve seen. These rods are particularly well suited for anglers who need the added convenience provided by a telescopic rod and aren’t logging serious hours of fishing associated with dedicated travel fishing trips. In other words, they’re ideal for when you’re on vacation and, suddenly, you have an hour or two to go fishing.

KastKing has provided an outstanding array of options, in both casting and spinning rod models. This selection is a great service for potential customers who need to find rods to fit a wide variety of angling scenarios, as well as the inevitable personal preferences.

The BlackHawk II rods are built using KastKing KastFlex 24-Ton Carbon Matrix blanks, with a solid glass tip. Snug-Fit ferrules, stainless steel line guides, graphite reel seats and comfortable EVA handles are used to create a nicely finished rod.

For more information on telescopic rods, we have a rundown of the best telescopic options out there , as well.

The Orvis Clearwater took home the best value award in our fly rod test last year and was a favorite among our group of editors and testers. For starters, the Clearwater is one of the more affordable fly rods on the market, and it can hold its own with the premium rods that often see a price tag north of a grand. This rod went head-to-head with all of the top-end models, and after a quick blind-casting test, most of our editors put the Clearwater ahead of our favorite high-end rods.

As for performance, the Clearwater throws tight loops and can reach almost as far as any other rod. It’s a bit cumbersome, and you might get tired after a full day on the water. Anglers can pick up a Clearwater rod in sizes ranging from 2-weight to 12-weight. So no matter what fish you enjoy chasing with a fly, there’s a Clearwater rod for you. And since this is a travel fishing rod story, it’s worth mentioning that the Clearwater is a four-piece rod and can be carried on any plane in a rod tube. —Ryan Chelius

Things to Consider Before Buying a Travel Fishing Rod

Travel fishing can be as exotic as a once-in-a-lifetime globetrotting adventure, or as simple as a subway trip to the city pond or lake. In both scenarios, a more compact, travel-friendly fishing outfit will make transit to the destination easier. Before buying a travel fishing rod, consider what species of fish you’re targeting, spatial limitations, mode of transport and the all important time versus money equation.

Target Species

What type or types of fish will you be chasing, and where will you be fishing? An ideal rod for panfish or trout will be outgunned and frustrating to use when targeting big stripers or redfish. Rods and their counterpart reels (meaning the reel you always use with that rod) may be great in freshwater but not up to the abuse they’ll endure in a marine environment. I like versatility in my gear but not to the point of compromising my overall enjoyment. To this end, I think it best to establish realistic expectations and fully understand what my travel rods can and cannot handle.

Spatial Limitations

The first leg of the journey is a commercial airline behemoth with spacious overhead compartments that will easily accommodate your travel rod case. But the final hop comes via a de Havilland Beaver where space is severely limited. Or, perhaps you’re hiking into the backcountry for a multi-day camping and fishing adventure. In each of these scenarios, spatial limitations are different, and in each case it’s important to identify how compact your travel rod (or rods) need to be. This is a question best asked and answered before you depart.

Mode of Transport

In a perfect world, my rods never leave my oversight when I travel to fish. But often that’s just not realistic. So, I opt to plan for the worst and hope for the best. I like when rods come with a crush-proof case. If they don’t, it’s best to invest in a specialized travel rod case that will accommodate the rod or rods you plan to take. When trips require multiple transfers, the added peace of mind alone merits the investment.

If carrying a rod or rods onto an airplane, I find out the airline’s maximum dimensions for carry-on items. If I have any doubt about carry-on options, I make sure the cased rod I’m traveling with will fit in my checked baggage.

Time versus Money

This is an important equation that has additional variability based on a person’s disposable income and priorities. I once commented to a guiding client that I thought everyone should have one area of life where they indulge themselves. His response was, “Why just one?”

Realistically though, most anglers need to evaluate how often, and for how long, they’re likely to use a travel rod, and then factor that into their decision about which rod is best for them. An angler who might, or might not, use the rod once a year on a family vacation will want a different rod from the fisherman or woman who embarks upon one or more dedicated destination fishing trips each year.

Q: Can I carry-on a fishing pole?

According to the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), fishing rods can be carried on, as long as they meet the airline’s criteria for carry-on items. However, it’s best to always work with the specific airline you’ll be traveling with to fine-tune your carry-on planning. If you’re traveling internationally, be sure to also check with air carriers you’ll be flying with in the destination country or countries.  Adhere to their requirements, and your rod should remain in your hands from home to destination and back.

Q: How do you travel with a rod and reel?

I always want to travel with my rods in a hard, crush-proof case and my reels safely stowed in my carry-on fishing bag. Even if my travel rods are compact enough for airline carry-on, I still prefer to carry them in the protective hard case, as plans can sometimes change at the flight check-in. If I have to check the rods, at any point in the journey, I know they’ll be safe. Many people think about the flight process but don’t consider the auto travel on either end of the flight. In my experience, the transition points are when unprotected gear gets broken. Careful packing of your rods and reels extends the safety to these travel transition scenarios. In the “for what it’s worth” column, I’d rather arrive at a fishing destination without my clothes than my rods and reels. But happily this can be avoided by using a change of clothes as padding around your rods in the travel case. This way you arrive with your rods, reels and at least one spare outfit.

Q: Can you carry-on a 4-piece fly rod?

Yes, most conventional 4-piece fly rods will meet airline criteria for carry-on luggage. I’ve traveled with 4-piece, ten foot fly rods to Chile, Mexico, England and remote north western Canada. I’ve never had any difficulty carrying-on my fly rods. That being said, it’s still always best to check with the airline in-question in advance. If you’re working with an experienced fishing travel service, they can also provide their experience traveling to your destination. For additional thoughts on this topic, check out our in-depth breakdown of the best fly rods .

Q: Can I fly with fishing lures?

According to the TSA, fishing lures are defined as “sharp fishing tackle that may be considered dangerous.” They recommend sheathing or otherwise securing hooks; the lures should then be securely wrapped and packed in your checked baggage. Based on this information, any hooks, lures or flies in your carry-on could be confiscated. For anglers, the problem with this approach is the fear of arriving at a remote fishing destination with nothing to fish. To alleviate this concern, I pack a small selection of must-have flies or lures that I put in my carry-on bag—think of it as an emergency kit. I keep the selection small enough that I can accept the loss if it’s ever confiscated. The bulk of my fishing lures are packed safely in my checked bag and include duplicates of the essentials.

Q: What is the difference between a travel rod and a standard rod?

A travel fishing rod can break down into small sections or telescope into one small piece. A normal fishing rod is often one, two, or four pieces. This makes it a bit more difficult to travel with.

Q: Are travel rods worth it?

Having a fishing rod that can break down into small pieces is definitely worth it. You don’t necessarily need a “travel fishing rod,” but rather something that breaks down into three or four pieces so it’s easier to travel with.

Best Traveling Fishing Rods: Final Thoughts

Whether you’re embarking upon a bucket-list adventure fishing trip or hoping to get in a little fishing while traveling with the family, it all depends on your tackle getting to the destination unbroken and functional. That defines why travel rods have become so important for modern anglers, and the importance extends beyond airline travel. Try carrying a one-piece rod on a busy subway and you quickly realize the value of travel rods for close-to-home fishing.

Though many travel rods still fall short of their one-piece counterparts’ performance, advances in technologies and economies of scale have closed this gap. In some cases, the best travel fishing rods are indistinguishable from one or two-piece rods. To decide which travel rod is right for you, evaluate your target species, consider spatial limitations, mode of transportation and time versus money. Then, just add water and enjoy the fishing.

  • IM-7 Graphite blank construction and micro pitch blank taping.
  • Minima black ring guides and reel seat with machined clamp nut, woven graphite insert.
  • Hook keeper and lightweight split-grip cork handles.
  • Rated for lures down to 1/32 oz (great for Ned rigs and finesse on-the-go).

The Daiwa Presso rod is optimized for ease use and extreme portability - allowing every aspect of your fishing game - from casting to drift control, drop shotting, or finessing a jig through the weeds - to be smooth and enjoyable. The Presso excels in all settings - kayak, boat, shore, or up to your hips in waiters - t his will be your new go-to, favorite rod.

These superior ultralight actions come in lengths up to 7 feet for a combination of casting power with light lures' shock absorbing action to handle strong fish on ultra-fine lines. Micro-pitch taping of the blank during curing assures even distribution of resin and graphite for maximum power and sensitivity.

Overall, these rods are great for those who like to target smaller gamefish species (e.g., trout, perch, crappie, juvenile bass), travel a lot, and need a rod that can break down into a soft travel case (included with purchase) that's less than 2 feet long (22 inches to be exact).

Customer Reviews

A true ultralight rod, not a flimsy noodle. I love it and plan on buying one more!

This is my second Daiwa Presso 4 piece ultralight travel series rod. I fish lake clear wablers for brook trout in the Adirondack mountains, Throw Bobby Garland soft plastics for Crappies and finesse fish big jack Yellow Perch wirh it. Its super sensitive and responsive. This rod feels like a 1 peice!! One of my favorite parts is it packs down so small it fits on the side of my pack, under the seat of my truck and can even be snuck on the golf course. Ive been looking for a second one for 6 years and finally found it on Discount Tackles website. This rod paired up with a 1000 size reel, and some good 5 pound braid will sling a 1/32 ounce jig a country mile and feel the slightest takes. This rod would be perfect to throw Zman Micro TRD plastics. I might buy a third one!!

I ordered some items from Discount Tackle for early season preparation and also a Diawa UL spinning rod that I can travel with when I work out of town. I was very pleased with the shipping speed and good packaging on my lures, rod, and terminal tackle. It arrived about a day before the original shipping date and was all in the box with my list of items. I even got a cool sticker! I will be using Discount Tackle for future purchases and great sales on the brands that I have used before!

Most items I purchased here have lower prices than other places. Shipping cost is reasonable and super fast.

I love Kalin’s Lunker Grubs. I’m happy you carry so many different sizes and colours. I will continue to shop at Discount Tackle. Thanks

travel rod 4pc

The lighter design of graphite rods increases sensitivity. To serve as an effective hook keeper, the multi-purpose hook holder on this tool is a nice touch.

The enhanced reel seat is outfitted with stainless steel hoods that are resistant to corrosion and chipping, for lasting use. The 7 +1 guides are supplemented with stainless steel frames and ceramic inserts to help prevent line abrasion and breakage. The ultra -premium grade cork grip is light and warmer to the touch on a cold day while being able to transmit vibrations better and being less slippery when wet compared to EVA foam handles.

The special split-design handle and four-piece construction enable effortless assembly. This rod is highly portable and perfect for your next backpacking trip, promising power, versatility and flexibility with its Fast action and Medium power.

The stainless steel hoods on the reel seat are resistant to rust and corrosion, allowing you to use this spinning rod for a long time.

The cork grip is specially designed to provide you better comfort, and overall makes the model feel and perform like a more expensive one.

The 7+1 guides come equipped with frames made from stainless steel and ceramic inserts, for increased performance and efficiency.

The rod is lightweight while offering enough strength, due to its carbon fiber construction that keeps weight to a minimum, without compromising its overall sturdiness.

The hook holder is designed for efficiency, as well.

The guides on the end seem to run too small, and some buyers complain about not being able to use them efficiently.

Other reviewers find this rod to be too stiff, and they say that they prefer something with more flexibility.

2. Piscifun Graphite Spinning Fishing Rod 4 Pieces Travel Pole

The Triple Bonded Hybrid Blank provides an incredibly strong and powerful component to this value-loaded fishing pole. More than enough backbone is ensured by the 24-ton slit carbon core that also ensures sensitivity and powerful action. Additional strength is provided by a layer of 8-ton E-glass that also increases flexibility and enhances durability.

This rod is made from carbon fiber to keep its weight to a minimum since a lightweight model is easier to use for catching fish.

The new ArmorCore technology used makes the rod feel and behave like a sturdy piece of equipment, despite its small overall weight.

The ceramic guides ensure that there will be no friction between your line and your rod, to avoid a decrease in performance and sensitivity.

You can use the multi-purpose hook holder for all kinds of bait, and you will surely appreciate the convenience of not having to work with loose hardware.

Because it is easy to take apart and pack, it is the ideal travel set, for people who like going on fishing trips frequently.

The pouch offered for storing the rod pieces is not of the best quality, as some buyers point out. Their solution was to replace it with a hard case to avoid any mishaps.

3. Eagle Claw PK200 PackiT Spin

The fiberglass construction endows the pole with its lightweight design and also ensures increased sensitivity, so vibrations are effectively transmitted from the tip to your hand on the handle even with fish that give gentle and soft nibbles to the bait.

Easy to pack, this travel fishing pole packs neatly in your backpack and is also easy to put together. No more excuses for not being able to fish when you find a good spot.

This fishing rod is a sturdy fishing implement with evenly spaced guide inserts that handle the line well while preventing friction and easy line breakage. It’s a solidly constructed tool that should be a favorite for many anglers for years to come.

The fiberglass construction makes sure that the overall weight is kept to a minimum, and you will also appreciate its strength and flexibility.

The manufacturer offers five guides + tip, so you don’t have to purchase anything extra and just go fishing to your heart’s content.

A one year warranty is offered with your purchase.

Although the rod is designed for medium action, some buyers say that they find it too light, and that can be an issue when you want to go after bigger fish.

The action is not the fastest, either, so don’t expect the pole to satisfy your needs if this feature is what you are looking for.

Some owners considered that, given the limited features that it includes, this model is somewhat pricey. Yet, not many anglers who have tried it agree.

Buying guide

You can’t go fishing without a premium quality spinning rod in your hand, even if the pole is just the travel variety. What makes the best 4 piece spinning rod different from the rest?

travel rod 4pc

Top quality components

While traditionalists go for cork handles, it’s not uncommon to find top quality rods made with both EVA foam and cork handles. Portuguese cork handles are popular. For rods that will be predominantly used with a rod holder, a stain-resistant EVA foam handle is the best choice. A two-handed rod provides great performance during a fight and long casts.

A quality reel seat won’t work loose at critical times, taking on the stress of a fight with its ability to handle increased torque. It should work well with all major reel brands, fitting securely when tightened and equipped with cushioned hoods. The line guides are large near the reel and are smaller going down to the tip. The flexibility and length of the rod blank determines the proper number of guides. Rods with more flex feature more guides. Line guide inserts can be made of metal, plastic and ceramics, varying in hardness and cost.

Plenty of today’s rods are constructed of fiberglass, graphite or a fusion of both. With refinement in technology, graphite rods have overcome their tendency for easy bruising, making the material itself a go-to choice for fighting power and flexibility as well as superb sensitivity.

Performance-geared action

Categorized in general terms, the action of a rod defines the tool’s performance during casting and reeling in. A rod can be Fast, Medium or Moderate, or Slow action. A Fast action model flexes mostly in the top third segment of its length. Bending farther down the rod’s length, usually the midsection, are Medium or Moderate action rods. A Slow action rod flexes along its entire length down to the handle.

The lure size and weight also have something to do with the action of the rod. For maximum casting distance, you will want to use a lighter action rod when employing small lures because there is greater kinetic energy with the higher flex.

Jigging and other techniques will benefit from the quick hookset delivered by Fast-action rods. Middleweight crankbaits work nicely with Moderate action rods. For long, gentle casts, a Fast action rod is best when using live bait.

Good power rating

You’ll want a rod with more power if you expect the fish to put up a huge fight. Power can be Heavy, Medium-heavy, Light or Ultra-Light. Small fish require less power while larger ones will need a stiffer rod with Heavy power. Power has to do with the ability of the rod to lift so stiffer rods, described as having more backbone, boast plenty of power. This attribute also relates to line strength. Use light lines for Light power rods and heavy line weights for Heavy poles. Fishing in thick, heavy cover is best with a strong rod, while a lighter power rod is best used in clear, open water.

Daiwa Tatula Review

The Daiwa Tatula was introduced into the marketplace in 2013 under a very creative marketing campaign called “Project T” and with it came three models.

The three different models share many of the same attributes, with the flagstone being the T-Wing Levelwind System or TWS as Daiwa refers to it, and the main differences being gearing ratios, bearings, and spool size.

In this review of the Daiwa Tatula 100, Daiwa Tatula Type-R and Tatula Type-HD, I will show you the differences between these models and why you will want to choose one over the other based on your particular style of fishing.

Here is the short answer to which model makes the most sense for you.

Tatula   100

The standard Tatual is the entry level to the Tatula series and is a very durable reel with great features including the T-Wing levelwind.  If you are doing more freshwater than saltwater fishing and are looking to save a few dollars then this is probably the reel for you.

Tatula Type-R

The Type-R is going to give you these additional features:

  • 8 bearing system includes 2 corrosion resistant bearings (2CRBB + 5BB + 1RB)
  • Super lightweight aluminum spool
  • Zaion drag star
  • 10 grams lighter
  • Available in super fast 8.1:1 gear ratio

For the angler that is going to be fishing inshore and or has a need for a super fast retrieve option then this is the model you will want to go with.

Tatula Type-HD

The Type-HD is going to give you the same features of the Tatula and then the following:

  • Extra long 100mm handle for more leverage
  • 30% more line capacity

Saltwater anglers that are targeting larger species up to say 10 lbs will want to choose the Type-HD for its extra cranking power, larger handle, and extra line capacity.

T-Wing System (TWS) – Daiwa’s T-Wing System is unique and solves one of the common problems with baitcasting reels which is the friction that is usually caused by the level wind system.  With the unique design of TWS, the line is free to flow through the wide part of the top section when casting.

Once you start to retrieve the line, it slips into the lower groove and is then evenly distributed onto the reel.

Rugged, lightweight aluminum frame and side plate (gear side) – The Tatula has a very clean and precisely designed frame and sideplates that are both made of lightweight aluminum which leads to the overall reel weights of between 7.6 oz and 8.1 oz depending on the model.

Air Rotor – The air rotor not only weighs about 15% less than a traditional rotor but its design to also evenly distribute the stress across the Zaion carbonite composite material and thus accomplishes two goals, one is strength and the other is reduced weight.

Ultimate Tournament Carbon Drag UTD –  All three of the Tatula models use what Daiwa refers to as the Ultimate Tournament Carbon Drag system.  The UTD is comprised of oversized carbon fiber drag washers that are placed on either side of the spool and allow for even distribution of the force on the spool.

This design results in a smooth drag and during our testing, we did not have any experience with the drag catching or binding.

Magforce-Z cast control – Magforce-Z is what makes the castability of the Daiwa Tatula series of reels so great.  Daiwa’s unique magnetic braking system allows the spool to spin freely early on in the cast and then at just the right time it applies the magnets to start slowing the rotation of the spool to prevent back spoiling.

Backspooling is a common issue for many anglers, especially when just starting to use a baitcaster.  There is a dial adjustment on the sideplate that allows the user to dial in just the right amount of pressure depending on his or her personal preference, lure weight and experience.

8 Bearing System – The Tatula reels use what are called CRBB or Corrosion Resistant Ball Bearings, these are specially treated stainless ball bearings that are designed to provide up to 12 times the normal life expectancy of steel ball bearings under harsh saltwater conditions. (Not on the Tatula Standard.)

Swept Power Handle – The Large, 90mm swept power handle with cutouts for reduced weight places the paddles closer to the center of the reel and rod which means that more energy from each crank of the handle is transferred directly to the reel and is not wasted unnecessarily, this results in more power when you retrieve.

The Tatula Type-HD offers a 100mm handle for even more cranking power.

Features at a Glance

  • T-Wing System (TWS)
  • Rugged, lightweight aluminum frame
  • Air Rotation
  • Ultimate Tournament Carbon Drag UTD
  • Magforce-Z cast control
  • 5.4:1, 6.3:1, 7.3:1 & 8.1:1 gear ratios
  • 8 Bearing System
  • Infinite Anti-reverse
  • Corrosion resistant clutch mechanism
  • Large, 90mm swept power handle
  • I-Shape handle knob

At the heart of the Tatula series of reels is the T-Wing or TWS system as Daiwa refers to it, so just what is this T-Wing System?  With most baitcasting reels there is a common problem which is how do you get your line back onto the spool evenly.

Different manufacturers have come up with different solutions with the most common one being what is referred to as the level wind system.

Most level wind systems incorporate a winding mechanism that moves horizontally back and forth across the spool to distribute the line evenly.  The line typically passed through a small guide hole and this can cause friction on the line when you cast the reel.

Daiwa has come up with a very ingenious method called the T-Wing that allows the line to move side to side in the top of the T part of the guide, this allows the line to play off the reel smoothly with almost no friction.

Once the clutch is engaged the line drops down into the lower part of the T guide and is directed back and forth across the spool to wind evenly.  (See Diagram Above)

Specifications

There are three models of the daiwa tatula here are the specifications., daiwa tatula 100 specifications, daiwa tatula type-r specifications, daiwa tatula type-hd specifications.

Ergonomically the reel fits very nicely in the palm of your hand and should deliver a stress-free experience after many hours of fishing.  If you choose the HD model then you will have to take into account that it is going to be slightly heavier than comparable models such as the Abu Garcia Revo SX or the Shimano Curado 70 or Shimano Curado I  but it is going to give you more line capacity for fighting those larger fish.

When it comes to retrieval rates, the Tatula gives you many different choices with gear ratios between 5.4:1 and  8.1:1, so you are covered for many different fishing scenarios.  The oversized 90mm handle on the Tatula and Tatula Type-R and the 100mm handle on the Tatula Type-HD give you extra cranking power to muscle in those larger fish.

Daiwa changed out the knobs on the Tatula to a flatter paddle style that you might be familiar with if you have ever fished Shimano baitcasters, personally, I like the new knobs quite a bit.

  • Corrosion resistant
  • Magnetic braking

Alternatives

There are two reels that I think you should take a look at.  The first is the Shimano Curado 70 if you are gong to be targeting smaller species such as spotted seatrout. The reel is lightweight and has a slightly greater retrieve rate than the Shimano Curado I. Read the full  Shimano Curado 70 review HERE .

If you are targeting slightly larger species such as Snook and Redfish then the Curado I with the extra drag and spool size might be a better choice for you.  Read the full  Shimano Curado I review HERE .

In Conclusion

With a total of 7 different configurations (not counting left vs right retrieve), the Tatula series of reels for Daiwa can cover a very wide range of angling applications.  These reels are priced and compete in the main segment of the baitcasting market and offer you a good solution for almost any type of fishing situation you might find yourself in.

The reels are very solid when it comes to quality and durability.  In our tests, we were pleased with the performance of the three configurations we took into the field and really had nothing negative to say about them other than they were slightly heavier than we would traditionally expect from Daiwa.

The bottom line is that all three of the models offer something to be desired, which you will have to decipher based on the style of fishing you intend to use the reel for.  We are confident that all will hold up over time which has been our experience with other Daiwa products.

Performance: The Tatula TAT721 charted out in the lab similar in power to our Creature Feature baseline rod, the G.Loomis MBR844C GLX meaning that even though there's really no industry standard, this stick is basically what we'd expect from a heavy powered rod.

Casting: Matched with a Daiwa Exceler for testing duties, the TAT721 demonstrated very good casting performance. The tip loads very predictably and can comfortably handle baits within its recommended lure rating. It's really fun pitching half ounce jigs with this stick.

Sensitivity: Daiwa's SVF Bias blanks have always performed well overall in my hands, but if there's one area of complaint I've had with the Steez rods in particular, it's that they're not sensitive enough for their price point. I've not felt that way about the Zillion rods.

The Tatula sticks are priced even more attractively than that of the Zillions, but with their unsanded blanks, they remind me of the Steez rods. In fact, other than the balance of the rod and the components with which it is built including the reel seat and handle, I might be hard pressed to distinguish the blank on this Tatula rod from that of a non-Compile-X Steez - especially in the area of sensitivity.

That's either bad news for the Steez rods or great news for the Tatula or both, but I was more than happy with what I could feel dragging a jig along the bottom of Clear Lake with this rod.

Power: Weighing in at a mere four ounces for a stick rated at heavy power, it's easy to take for granted the backbone this rod possesses. The TAT721HFB rated out on our RoD WRACK as a stick similar in power to the MBR844C GLX - another deceivingly powerful stick - and it fishes to this power out on the water as well. There's more than enough backbone in this rod to set the hook and control your catch to the boat through a mix of cover situations.

Features: Daiwa spared little expense filling up the features checklist on their Tatula casting rods. In addition to a split rear grip made of EVA foam, this rod benefits from the following features:

Daiwa’s Tatula Elite Spinning Rods Review

daiwa tatula travel rod review

The result of this is, those who are on a more modest budget can now acquire top quality gear that simply was not available in these price ranges in the not too distant past.

We obtained the new Daiwa Tatula Elite Spinning rod to mate with the Tatula LT Spinning Reel. The specific model we’ll be reviewing is the TAEL701MLFS. This rod is the 7’ Med Lt Meyer. It’s lure rating is 1/16-3/8 with a line rating of 4-10. A finesse rod for sure.

It has the same cosmetics as all other Tatula Elite rods whether they are casting or spinning models. The two tone glossy grey finished blanks, thread wraps, split EVA foam grip, rear grip and foregrip and the Fuji reel seat.

This rod uses Daiwa’s SVF (Super-high Volume Fiber) Nano-Plus technology with X45 carbon fiber materials, Fuji Alconite ring guides fitted with Alconite inserts and comes with a Limited 5-year warranty.

Designed by experts

daiwa tatula travel rod review

This particular rod was designed with input from Cody Meyer who is well known for his ability with finesse presentations such as drop-shotting, shakey head fishing etc. A west coast angler, Cody is well versed with using diminutive lures and light line to catch finicky bass.

We spooled our Tatula LT with #8 line to begin our testing with various small, light weight baits of all kinds. We decided to start with some neko rigged worms to get a feel for how sensitive the rod is with bottom oriented lures.

We have not been disappointed in the least. The Tatula rod transmits vibrations very well so that you can feel when your bait is at rest, makes contact with various objects on the lake floor and most importantly, bites. Subtle, crushing or anything in between, you feel it.

Setting the hook is when you see how strong the blank really is. Even on big fish the set is sure, quick and requires very little effort. The action is a joy to fight a fish with in that the tip is so forgiving while the blank transitions seamlessly into its backbone to supply the angler with plenty of power to handle fish of all sizes.

How strong can it be?

We’ve had to put some serious pressure on big fish in grass to get them out with this rod. It hasn’t been a concern other than the thought that we might just snap the line given how hard we’ve had to pull to get them out of the grass.

We’ve experimented with everything but the kitchen sink in lures both soft and hard. Most within the recommended range but, as usual, some well outside that range to see how far we could push the rod. Here again, our biggest issue became wondering whether or not we were going to snap the line as the rod has handled everything including over 1/2 ounce without issue.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

The Tatula Elite Spinning Rod is wonderfully balanced with the Tatula LT. It is a pleasure to fish all day. It doesn’t fatigue you thanks to that balance and its light weight.

The butt section of this rod is another area that we find to be just right. Some sticks of this length have a much longer rear grip. In most cases, we prefer a length that doesn’t quite reach your elbow as this allows more freedom of movement for working things like jerkbaits, small top-water plugs, shakey heads etc.

When you’re using those type of lures, if the rear grip is so long that it makes contact with the inside of your elbow every time you pop the rod tip, it can go from frustrating to down right irritating. The TAEL701MLFS gives you more than enough room to work lures as aggressively as you want while also providing plenty of butt to anchor against your forearm to effeciently fight those big fish.

This particular model has the standard guides which have proven to be very responsive and sensitive but for those who want a more customized version, these rods are also available with AGS guides. While the standard models retail for $179, the models equipped with AGS start at $279.

In our opinion, you can’t go wrong with either model. The design, workmanship, actions and aesthetics are quality throughout.

If there is any negative in this rod, the only thing that we don’t particularly care for is the placement of the hook keeper. It is located just ahead of the butt section on the rear grip on the underside of the blank. We would prefer that it be repositioned, as unorthodox as this might sound, just ahead of the foregrip.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

It just gets a little uncomfortable when carrying or reaching for the rod to feel the line next to the handle. But that might be nit picking on our part. You be the judge.

In the end, this spinning rod, with all that it offers the angler, is more than fairly priced with actions that are well honed for specific techniques yet offering flexibility at the same time.

The Daiwa Tatula Spinning Rod is a high-performance rod that quickly garnered the attention of experienced bass anglers– even if it’s not quite a professional-grade bass rod.

That said, this versatile spinning rod provides more than a refined technique in bass angling with a spinning set-up capable of employing more than one lure action effectively.

With a fantastic blank employing maximum performance design techniques generally found on more expensive rod blanks, the Tatula series rods offers a blank with plenty of backbone.

That said, at a medium price range, this review examines whether or not the awesome, all-around blank and excellent guides are worth the fishing gear investment or if you’re better off opting for a general-purpose bass rod at a bargain price.

  • X-45 Concept Blanks
  • Fuji Fazelite guide system
  • Extremely ergonomic design
  • Not a budget-friendly option
  • Iffy reel seat
  • More for bass fishing

Construction (craftsmanship, make quality)

The real value of the Tatula series rods crops up in their powerful blanks that employ manufacturing techniques often found on more expensive fishing poles .

The Tatula X-45 Blanks use a high-end manufacturing process called Braiding-X Fiber Braiding Technology that sees the graphite fibers wrapped at an alternating 45-degree bias.

This design approach not only eliminates bulky tubes and significantly reduces the amount of graphite needed, but it also helps limit blank twist while still providing a blank with plenty of backbone.

This design results in a stiffer blank, but the wrap of braid with graphite fibers allow you to target larger fish– even through heavy cover– without having to worry about cracking or breaking the stout blank.

Even better, Daiwa employs an SVF, or Super Volume Fiber, manufacturing process that uses nano resin particles to reduce the amount of resin applied and thus reduce the weight, ensuring a sensitive blank.

On top of that, this process also increases the graphite density of the rod blanks, further reinforcing the blank with plenty of backbone and ensuring its use as a durable choice.

Keep in mind that you generally find many of these manufacturing techniques used on expensive options made in Japan.

The fact that you get maximum performance at a relatively affordable price is just icing on the cake.

It also doesn’t hurt that this fishing pole comes with a solid hook keeper

Moving through this versatile spinning rod from the sensitive blank to the solid all-round performance guide quality, the Fuji Fazelite guide system uses a double-foot K-series.

While the Fazelite material is interesting in its own right, the inclusion of high-end performance K-series guides significantly reduces the incidence of line tangles.

The split handle design further boosts the blank quality by allowing you to better feel the slightest vibrations.

This solid choice makes the Tatula a tough competitor in the general-purpose bass rod market.

The Tatula pretty much utilizes exclusively quality materials for the entirety of this pole increasing not only the blank quality but every other high-performance component as well.

For starters, the Super Volume Fibers make another appearance with high-modulus graphite, offering a solid price-to-performance ratio without sacrificing blank quality.

The SVF resin is also worth its own mention given that it allows a tighter wrap of braid with the graphite and is not necessarily a given on a somewhat affordable option like this.

It’s also heavily responsible for providing some of the models with medium-heavy power without having to worry about the blank coming in bulky tubes.

Moving on from the fantastic blank, the Daiwa also spares no expense with its Fuji Fazelite guide system that further expands this pole as a sensitive spinning rod.

While not quite the ceramic Alconite found with other premium components, this modified aluminum-oxide blend performs nearly as well as those inserts.

Unlike older models that came with a split EVA foam handle, this general-purpose bass rod opts for primary handle materials made of premium cork.

The excellent handles of this high-performance rod only cement it as a great spinning set-up for all types of bass anglers.

This general-purpose bass rod doesn’t offer a wide range of actions with only fast and extra-fast available.

This approach introduces something of a trade-off where you lose a bit of potential casting distance but more than make up for that consequence with increased casting control .

On top of that, the quicker actions help boost the touch of this already somewhat sensitive blank.

The ever-popular medium-heavy, fast action blanks make adoption among bass anglers that much easier due to the solid hookset with a variety of lures from light lures to heavy lures.

Even better, the different spec configs contribute to the Tatula being a versatile spinning rod that can use one lure action or another with a broad range of lures.

This is one of the areas where Tatula’s powerful blanks are on full display as the stiffer blank ensures that you don’t have to worry about a strong backbone after engaging the general-duty bass rod’s solid hookset.

This approach allows you to use a wide variety of lures from light lures to heavy lures and all lure weights in between.

Even though this rod tops out with a medium-heavy blank, most fishermen agree that the entire series of rods offers more backbone than you might expect.

As such even if you opt for a lower power rating than the strongest medium-heavy blank, the Tatula will tend to function as a slightly heavier powered model than most of the comparable competition.

And while this lineup carries models with a lighter power than the top medium-heavy power options, none of them even dip into a proper medium-light power rating.

That said, as a general-purpose bass rod, the medium-heavy, fast action blanks serve as excellent bass rods that afford a stout blank with plenty of backbone for your growing bass arsenal.

In terms of quality, the Tatula offers high-grade components that see its guide quality sit well above average– even if it’s not quite “the best.” Still, the Fuji Fazelite quality guides enhance numerous features like improving casting control with a buttery smooth, modified aluminum oxide insert encased in a K-series ring.

Not only does this choice reduce the number of tangles you’ll have to deal with, but it also allows the modestly sensitive blank to reinforce that touch, leading to a surprisingly sensitive spinning rod.

However, one of the best qualities of this approach involves the guide system’s ability to cast even the strongest braids without worrying about it slicing through the rings or popping out the inserts.

Handle (material, shape, etc)

Whereas earlier models opted for a split EVA foam handle, the modern version still comes with excellent handles, but the primary handle materials now favor cork.

The natural cork handle uses a split handle design that tends to work the best with virtually any spinning set-up by balancing control over your spinning reel with sensitivity.

Uses (Who is this good for)

Billed as excellent bass rods from the beginning, Daiwa saw rapid adoption among bass anglers for these dedicated bass rods as part of a standard spinning set-up.

Of course, experienced bass anglers waited to see if the pitching technique in bass angling performed as well with a variety of lures and lure weights before jumping on the bandwagon.

Of course, with the ability to handle the strongest braids and afford some of the best hookset certainty with a strong backbone, it wasn’t long before real competitors recognized a solid choice with top-tier blank quality.

Fast-forward a few years and this spinning set-up is almost expected to be one of the dedicated bass rods in any serious bass arsenal.

It’s worth remembering that because this top-quality rod doesn’t come in at a bargain price, it might not be the best option for beginners– especially if they haven’t yet been bitten by the bug.

However, once a fisherman moves from the beginner to the intermediate level, this series of rods offers top-notch performance at a reasonably affordable price.

Reel and Real Seat Compatibility

In terms of quality, not everyone loves the FUJI PTS reel seat that comes with the Tatula, even if it is a durable choice.

The main issue seems to be the reel seat’s bulk which often loses out when compared to a tough competitor with a sleeker profile.

That said, you should have no issue with slop or wiggle with pretty much any spinning reel.

Still, real competitors may pine a bit for the reel seats included with the Tatula Elite Spinning Rod, though these designs can see a bit of variation with the hook keeper.

Conclusion (Wrap Up)

The Daiwa Tatula Spinning Rod offers a large collection of bass rods that hit the sweet spot between top-notch performance and an affordable price– though it’s by no means a budget-friendly option.

That said it’s still an affordable option with a medium price range, though is not really part of a professional collection like the Tatula Elite Spinning Rod or other expensive options.

Still, the Tatula spinning set-up is a quality rod with high-end performance thanks to high-quality materials and a great all-around blank with top-quality guides.

So, if you need solid all-around performance, able to use a variety of lures for an impressive general-duty bass rod, the Tatula Spinning Rod hits all the right notes in the price-to-performance ratio.

Daiwa Tatula 100 Baitcaster Review

Jason sealock.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

The new Daiwa Tatula 100 Baitcasters offer a smaller frame, lighter weight and improved performance in the improved versions of the original Tatula line. I’ve been fishing with these reels for a bit and have found that they offer anglers a solid reel at the mid-tier price point. Here are some additional details on this new line-up of baitcasters from Daiwa.

You can find the Daiwa Tatula 100 at the following retailers:

  • Discount Tackle
  • Walmart.com
  • Tackle Warehouse
  • Bass Pro Shops

daiwa tatula travel rod review

Awesome Aesthetics

Daiwa has always made a great looking baitcaster, but the frame and finish on the Tatula 100 series for 2019 really shows off their attention to detail and gives anglers a reel to be proud to own and fish. The sleek detailing and lines really accent how light and tight this reel feels and fishes. Every edge and part exudes quality.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

Lighter weight

The aluminum frame gives this reel a solid foundation and the bodyweight is greatly reduced from handle to spool. The reel only weighs an impressive 6.9 ounces considering it has a full aluminum frame. It feels very solid and tight on the cast and retrieve.

The T-Wing system gives this reel its long distance casting and smooth line management that anglers have come to love in the Tatula series of reels.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

New tension adjustments

The new tension knob is very snug and allows for precision adjustments that won’t slip or change as you fish. I found that it can be a little tricky to get it fine tuned the first time if you have big hands like me, but that’s because it is so tight and compact on the frame.

Once you get the weight of the lure dialed on the tension knob, you can let it rip without worry of anything changing or worrying with caps coming off if you’re someone that likes to just back the tension off and use your thumb like me.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

Better thumbar control

The thumb bar system is upgrade and seems a lot more smooth and tight. I like that because I think a tight thumb bar keeps a reel quieter over the life of the reel. It’s very smooth to operate on the cast and engages quietly on the retrieve.

I think small details like this are a lot of what makes this an improved experience with this version of the Tatula baitcasters.

Smaller, easier to palm

These Daiwa Tatula 100 reels are a smaller form factor and fit so nicely in the palm of your hand. That leads to longer fishing with less fatigue over the life of fishing with this reel. It also has a lot to do with casting accuracy that most anglers don’t realize. You can roll cast a lot tighter with more precision if your wrist and hand aren’t flexing as much because they are opened wider on a bigger reel.

Great braking

The braking on this new Daiwa Tatula seems improved as well. It may not have much change in terms of engineering but it seems to handle small baits very well. I have been fishing 1/4 ounce swimbaits on it this summer on 12-pound line and catching a lot of fish on windy days around docks where I have to put a small lure in a tight spot without having an overrun stop me from immediately winding the lure.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

Great with a variety of lures

I’ve cranked and thrown swimbaits with the 6.3:1 Daiwa Tatula 100. I’ve flipped and pitched with the 8:1 Tatula and cast chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, worms and jigs on the 7:1 Tatula. I know this has become the staple reel for most of the Daiwa pros on tour this year and I see why now. It does really well with light lures and all of the conventional bass fishing techniques.

If you liked the original Daiwa Tatula line, you’ll find these smaller, tighter, lighter Tatula 100s more appealing. I really like it on the 7-foot, 3-inch MH Daiwa Tatula Rod. It’s been a great all-purpose setup for so many bass fishing applications. I take it on trips and it’s always on the deck now.

Daiwa Tatula Spinning Rod Review. Walker Smith; Oct 17, 2019; It can be pretty tough to find a high-end spinning rod in the $150 price range. A trip to Moscow

I'm going to organize a trip this summer. I want to plan everything. I’ll fly from London to Moscow, and I also want to visit St. Petersburg. Could you, please, advise me what places I should visit? I’ll stay in Moscow for about 10 days before going to St. Petersburg. Thank you!

Not a country I’d be spending my money in at the moment.

Ditto. Ditto!

I don't really see the point of shunning a country because you don't agree with its leader and/or its government. Would you go to Italy? China? Tourist dollars are more likely to get into the hands of the people rather than any corrupt bureaucracy and meeting friendly tourists might just change the locals opinions of foreigners and even give them some information they don't get from local news media.

Hopefully , I won't be starting a war here , but I must say I agree with Chani's comments . Having taken three year visas in 2015 , we have been to Moscow and St; Petersburg ( once to Moscow , and twice to St Petersburg ) . The History , Art , Music ( I am a classically trained musician ) and Culture , fascinate us . Much to experience there and advance preparation is essential , To get a good grounding for your visit , read this lavish and detailed book by Suzanne Massie , it's one of the best ways to immerse yourself in what you will experience - https://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-Beauty-Old-Russia/dp/096441841X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1521652009&sr=8-1&keywords=land+of+the+firebird+massie&dpID=51CPK13XKGL&preST=_SX218_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch

And while leaders of such countries can point to foreign visitor numbers as a sign of support ? I also believe that personal safety for certain travellers, especially obvious minorities, cannot be guaranteed, as fervent nationalism increases, and tolerance levels evaporate. Just as I may decide against a purchase at the supermarket because of a company’s behaviour, ethics will always be a consideration.

Well, I'd argue supermarket ethics does not readily translate to travel ethics - the latter is far more complex. Personally, I see the whole "vote with my hard-earned travel dollar" approach as overly simplistic, but if it's your position - I totally respect it.

What I don't understand is members volunteering ethical guidance in response to what seems an innocuous request for travel-related information.

Note a discussion on ethics hosted a year ago by the Webmaster of this very forum.

https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/general-europe/travel-ethics-612334a0-0ca1-4128-b088-c13d1d8a91c3

I appreciate Rick Steves' point of view in his "Travel As A Political Act". That said, Putin's Russia is not a place I would support. But, to each his or her own....

From a practical point of view, travel between the two countries can be difficult. I understand the Russians who traveled in the US this past winter had to go to the US Embassy in the country of Georgia to get visas because the Russians expelled American embassy personnel. If you do travel to Russia, you may be on your own. See the American travel advisory: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/russia-travel-advisory.html

Travel Advisory January 10, 2018 Russia – Level 3: Reconsider travel Reconsider travel to Russia due to terrorism and harassment. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory U.S. citizens are often victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion by law-enforcement and other officials. U.S. consular assistance to detained individuals is often unreasonably delayed by Russian officials. Russia also enforces special restrictions on dual U.S.-Russian nationals. Due to the Russian government-imposed reduction on U.S. diplomatic personnel in Russia, the U.S. government has reduced ability to provide services to U.S. citizens.

We have traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg over the past few years. As in the US, most of the people we encountered helpful and not particularly political. In Moscow, we stayed at The Garden Ring Hotel which was a close walk to the metro. The hotel was very comfortable and quiet for being in the city. We loved the art museums and the Georgian restaurants. In St. Petersburg, we stayed at both The 3Mosta hotel near the Hermitage and the Art Hotel Demetra.. In St. Petersburg, we especially liked the Hermitage and Russian museum. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet and having a good map is a must.

As I think the point about ethical considerations has been made, please keep future replies more specific to the question at hand. Thanks.

Either read a good travel book or book a guide who can personally take you to the best places that interest you and tell about the sights you're seeing. We used Dan Petrov on 2 different trips to Moscow and found him to be wonderfully friendly and witty not to mention super knowledgeable.

Latest advice, Australian Governmemt, 1 April 2018. “Due to heightened political tensions, you should be aware of the possibility of anti-Western sentiment or harassment. While the Australian Government is not aware of any increased difficulties for Australians travelling in Russia at this time, you should follow the security and political situation closely and keep up to date with this travel advice. Remain vigilant, avoid any protests or demonstrations and avoid commenting publicly on political developments.”

We very much enjoyed our group trip to Moscow and St Petersburg last year. excellent guides and accommodations. While Steven who has replied here has excellent advice, ( and we took advantage of it), we felt an organized tour really facilitated our enjoyment of the country. You may want to consider a combination of an organized tour and than adding independent days . Some of the Australians on the tour had arrived a couple of days earlier than the tour stated and then some stayed later. If we were to go again (which I would), that"s how I would do it. And I must say , it was enlightening to have conversations with the Russian tour guides and the non Americans about the current world situation. Not that we went into any great depth, but I think we all went away with a little more understanding. Top places: allow lots of time in St Petersburg at the Hermitage- take a separate day for the Impressionist building. In Moscow, the Russian Art Museum was amazing.

Solid advice from Australian government quoted above, especially the keeping up to date part.

I checked the current version (Sep 18) of that advisory - and it hasn't been updated much. In fact, some sections don't seem to have changed since 2005 - their recommendations for importing/exporting currency and financial instruments, for example, are at least five years behind.

I do like reading governmental travel advisories for entertainment purposes - for instance, up until very recently the US one sternly advised potential travelers that Moscow was largely a cash-based economy (couldn't be further from the truth) and warned about intrinsic dangers of gypsy cabs (which had all but disappeared by 2015).
