eSIM card vs WhatsApp

Has anyone used and eSIM card in their US iPhone while traveling in Europe3 of recent date. We'll be in Spain and Italy in April and each have an iPhone, mine in an IPhone SE 2nd gen, hers is an iPhone 11. We need phone service while abroad, to call/text to the US and to talk/text to confirm travel logistics within Spain and Italy. We've considered WhatsApp, but concerned about unknown WiFi. That is why we're looking at the eSIM card.

First, I suppose I should ask if our devices will even accept an eSIM [and, of course, will it function]? I done some research and get differing information about our phones abilty to access the eSIM.

Second, if the devices will work, what experiences as anyone had on their US iPhone while in Europe? By the way, we're on a Consumer Cellular plan and they don't, as of now, offer a "travel plan". My wife has been considering getting a later generation iPhone, maybe an 11 Pro, Would this accept the eSIM and would it be worth the upgrade,

Oh yes, permit me to note we still use or phone for talking and texting both to the US and within Europe, and for some, but not a lot, of pictures.

We've not used whats app

Heya- on a Spanish Vodafone eSIM as I type.

Years ago there was a setting issue with iPhones on Europe’s SIMs, long since resolved. As long as your phones are unlocked. They MUST be unlocked. Her 11 will be dual-sim, allowing the US number to run in parallel with another. One of those will be eSIM. Not sure about your SE.

Without some sort of data source, WhatsApp will only work when you’re on wifi. And if you do that, you’ll quickly learn how accustomed we’ve become to constant connectivity. (And data really can be useful when traveling.)

Phone service here is ridiculously cheap. I just paid €15 for 100gigs of data and 800 minutes of calls to/from anywhere—with a 28 day expiration. That’s less than two days on my ATT interna plan. And 100G is A LOT. Like, FaceTime calls, stream Netflix on a train, and never worry about it. Do note that my (many) plans don’t have a function to sent SMS text messages. All of Europe is on WhatsApp, rendering SMS obsolete.

First, I would check with Apple Support online - they have lots of information on eSIMs. This site - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2127800 - gives you an idea of what iPhones have eSIM capability. And this site - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209096 - gives you a huge number of providers (with countries) that will supply eSIMs.

Scudder was correct in saying your phones MUST be unlocked. If you bought them through a carrier and are still paying it off, they may not be. If you're not sure, this tells you how: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201328#:~:text=You%20can%20find%20out%20if,Lock%2C%20your%20iPhone%20is%20unlocked .

I used Airalo to get an eSIM in Germany last year - total cost was around $20 and I think I had 10G of data (not as much as Scudder, but I use data a LOT and never came close to the max). I had no problems using it or being able to access data. Most people tend to use wifi for as much as possible to save on data. If you are worried about unknown wifi, you might want to consider getting a VPN for your phone. There are a number of posts here that have gone into that.

If you like to talk, keep in mind that eSIMs usually do not come with phone calling - just data. There are exceptions but if you're calling people back in the states, I found it was easier to use FaceTime audio or WhatsApp. WhatsApp is a messaging service with phone capabilities so if you call people without iPhones (I used FaceTime audio for friends with iPhones), have them download the app before you leave so that you can message them and talk. WhatsApp is actually more secure than iPhone's messaging system as everything is encrypted. If you do want phone calls, then check Orange or the one Scudder mentioned above.

I'm not sure if your iPhone SE will accept eSIM - look at the Apple support links above and it should let you know how to check.

If you’re phone is capaavle of it I’d say this isn’t even a valid comparison, WhatsApp VS an e-sim

I used an “orange travel e-sim” for 3 months this past September in Europe and the only places it did not work were Bosnia and I believe Slovenia.

It’s dirt cheap to get an e-sim with data and ecen calling if you want, I believe it was somthing like $30 USD for 30GB of data and 100 minutes of calling.

Having this is the difference between effectively using your phone to assist in your travels and struggling to find wifi imo. It’s 1000000% worth it.

I installed WhatsApp in EU just to deal with Italian and Turkish hotels who seem to prefer it.

In past years, I bought a SIM card on Amazon for 50-60 but then those same cards stopped working well later, so I decided to just use my regular service in roaming mode - which ran about $70 a month.

I have had some significant problems with service using an iPhone 11 PM and now a 13 PM. Mostly 1.25 years ago in Italy, France and Spain - I would go days or weeks with no cell internet service. I took the phone into apple stores over and over - in those countries. this created such havoc ... for example arriving in Sicily and getting no map, then finding a hotel where the owner is to meet you and he does not show up for an hour and no way to contact him. Finally Apple just replaced the phone - and that meant our rail passes were all invalid for a day or so before we could get them to re-initialize it from the office. The internet problems continued sporadically even with the new phone.

It's possible it was a VPN problem - but I turned if off, and later even deleted it, and the problems persisted mainly on my phone but not another iPhone 12 PM at the same time.

I'm in the SIM / eSIM camp - always connected, never need to rely on iffy WiFi or times of no WiFi availability. . Because I want nothing to do with WiFi when I travel, I purchase 2 SIM cards - one for my iPhone and the other for my cellular iPad.

Sign up for Google Voice before you leave the states. This will give you an additional US phone you can use for texting and calling using the Google Voice app. Anyone with this phone number can text your Google Voice phone number, even a flip phone. (I have relatives who still use flip phones, so WhatsApp is not an option for everyone.) You can make free Google Voice calls to US phones (even landlines) using the Google Voice app. But you do need internet service - WiFi or mobile data.. I use Google Voice as my primary phone number, and I receive calls on that number when I'm in Europe using a Vodafone SIM.

I still use WiFi in Europe. All web traffic is encrypted these days - wasn't the case even 15 years ago so everything you did was open for anyone with the right equipment to see. Not anymore. Be careful when opening LINKS in text messages and email messages!!! Don't click/tap on any link you weren't expecting to get.

I strongly urge you not to connect to unsecured wifi. I have always regretted doing this upon my return home, absolutely inundated with junk mail. Never again!

If you’re going to get a sim/esim dont know why you wouldn’t just spend the extra $5-10 for the voice portion as opposed to using google voice.

Then you also have a local EU number and the ease that unlocks.

I know I’m repeating this but using my 13 pro max and the orange holiday sim, it was virtually as smooth as it could possibly be. And I work for a telecom giant in Canada so I know how finicky SIM cards etc. can be

The only annoyance I found with the orange sim was that it didn’t let you know when you were close to using all your data, so it’s a good idea to reset the timer/counter for that specific sim in the settings of the phone. That only happened once over a 3.5 month euro trip however and I simply went back to the Airbnb, topped up the sim and it started working again instantly.

One thing, if you’re using it for more than a month you need to provide orange a scan or your passport for registration. But this just involves emailing them a photo of it and a brief registration page

If you are getting junk email, it's because you gave your email address to someone, not because you were using unsecured WiFi. Sometimes other people who have emailed you get hacked and their address book stolen...if you are in their address book, then you get added to more spam lists.

I have an unlocked iPhone 11 my carrier is Xfinity I have an iPad how do I get SIM card what is the difference between sim and esim? Thanks for your time to answer Carol

Carol, you will get more responses if you start another topic with your question. I can’t tell you that the difference between an eSIM and a regular Sim is that an eSIM is digital only. You do not need to physically transfer a card into your phone like you do with a regular Sim card.

'How does WhatsApp work internationally?': How to use WhatsApp internationally for free with Wi-Fi

  • You can use WhatsApp internationally for free with Wi-Fi; depending on your cellular plan, you may incur international charges for using cellular data on WhatsApp.
  • To preclude international data fees, you can turn roaming off on your phone and still use Wi-Fi.
  • This story is a part of Business Insider's Guide to WhatsApp.

WhatsApp has made international connectivity easier than ever. Since WhatsApp uses an internet connection, it's possible to get around international calling restrictions and fees.

How to use WhatsApp internationally

Luckily, as long as you're connected to Wi-Fi, WhatsApp chats will always be free.

Also, while you can be charged a fee per text message using your standard cellular service abroad, or be held to a limited amount of texts, your WhatsApp messages operate over your data plan.

Most international cellular plans have varying amounts of data available, and in some international plans you can get unlimited data.

If you didn't sign up for international data and don't want to incur additional fees, turn off data roaming on your phone, since international data roaming fees can add up quickly. This means that you'll only be able to use WhatsApp when you're connected to Wi-Fi.

For more information, read our articles on turning off data roaming for iPhone and Android devices .

If you're unsure of your rates for international data roaming or calling, contact your carrier for exact details.

9 BEST International SIM Cards for Travel (Buyer’s Guide • 2024)

SIM cards are a royal pain in the butt when travelling. Every time you land somewhere new, you have to perform the same song and dance of going out of your way to get a new sim pretty much as soon as possible.

Usually what happens is that you land in the airport and then you either get ripped off buying a SIM card there or navigate to town without any connectivity. Once you’re in town, you have to navigate a foreign city sifting through local SIM providers, various plans, and also probably getting lost along the way. It’s not the ideal way to start a vacation and I cannot even count the hours I’ve lost shopping for sims in new countries.

That’s why buying one of the best international SIM cards is THE way to go.

An International SIM card is one which will work all over the world meaning that you never have to change it again – no more messing around at the O2 Kiosk in strange airports!

Now, to set the record straight, while there are cheaper travel SIM cards in existence, they still aren’t exactly cheap. Nine times out of ten, a local SIM card is always going to be the cheaper option for budget backpackers.

Maybe you’re a digital nomad who always needs to be connected, maybe you’re a high-flying businessperson with fancy business attire who makes busy business calls while on holiday or maybe (like me) you are just sick of having to change sims.

Either way, this is the list of the best international SIM cards on the market! I’ve done all the leg-work and the research to deliver an international SIM cards review in full. So let’s get ourselves connected.

This isn’t the whole roundup but it is my personal pick of the best international SIM cards worth looking into, each one serving a different niche.

International SIMs, roaming SIMs, travel SIM Cards whatever: a rose by any name can still order you a pizza when you don’t want to leave the guesthouse after all right? That’s what an international SIM card is, a SIM card that will have you hooked up from “anywhere” .

Why did you put ‘anywhere’ in quotes?

Because it’s a highly variable anywhere. “Anywhere” really means from the countries that the international SIM covers. That said, some of these travel SIM providers cover over 200 countries.

That also said, there are only 195 countries in the world so I’m not sure how they mathed those numbers out. Still unsure, have a look at our guide to local vs international SIM cards .

Looking for Best Coworking Hostel in the World?

Come visit  Tribal Bali  – Bali’s first specially designed, custom-built co-living hostel…

So, how does an international SIM card work?

Without getting too technical, an international SIM card isn’t programmed to one specific network. It’s programmed to operate on a number of networks in a number of different geographical locations – specifically, networks using the GSM (Global Systems of Management Communications) framework.

That’s why to use your cell phone internationally with a travel SIM card it needs to be:

  • GSM-compatible (many phones are).
  • Unlocked, i.e. not tied to a provider.

Do be sure about that unlocked phone bit before you go ahead and buy a new one.

Hacker googling

Basically, global SIM cards will plug into a local network from the country you’re travelling to… Consensually, of course.

That’s why coverage so strongly varies among the many international SIMs. Some SIM cards are for worldwide use and programmed accordingly. Some SIM cards are for international roaming in certain regions like Asia, the USA, or Europe (usually, omitting a third of Europe in their coverage).

For example, you’ll need a different sim card for Canada and the USA in most cases, but in Europe you’ll more than likely be able to use the same one.

Who benefits from buying an international SIM card?

Well, like I said, not so much the longterm backpacker types . A local SIM card is pretty much always cheaper and much more practical (and reliable) for long stays in any country. Unfortunately, actual cheap international sim cards don’t exist yet.

Country-hoppers , on the other hand, may want to consider buying some sort of prepaid international SIM card. Buying local sim cards in Europe for only 1-2 weeks of use eight times in a trip is nobody’s idea of fun, especially if you care about data usage and double especially if you care about plastic ending up in the ocean.

Businessman talking on the phone with a internationally roaming

People living the digital nomad lifestyle may also benefit from a travel SIM. Though a local SIM is much more equipped for longterm stays in a country, sometimes the options or service is crap and sometimes you’ll spend long stretches in transit which is a perfect time to crunch out a few hours. Besides, there is no rule that says you can’t have two SIMs. A prepaid international sim card might be the best option here (more about that later).

Lastly, business people or people that take frequent short trips will benefit from a SIM card for international travel. I might be stereotyping here but I kinda feel that these folk are less concerned with the costs associated. Plus, most SIM cards for overseas use tend to have 1-year validity for purchased credit, so it’s totally viable to park your SIM after a trip and then pop it back in for the next one.

Beginning the list are the top international SIM cards for travelling that do everything a SIM card should do: call, texts, and mobile data . These SIMs have some pretty major coverage globally and for most travellers in the world, are more than sufficient.

Of course, there has to be a best-of-the-best in this international sim card comparison. So first up–the best travel SIM card!

#1 The Best International Physical SIM Card – OneSim

OneSim

Ok, so what makes OneSim the best travel SIM card? It’s a fine difference between the first few candidates but OneSim edges out on top for a combination of versatility, pricing, and reliability.

First up, they offer multiple different SIM cards each catering to different travelling needs INCLUDING (but not limited to) 2 awesome e-Sim options :

  • OneSimCard e-Sim World (From $9.95) – Coverage of 150 countries with free incoming calls on EU numbers.
  • OneSimCard e-Sim Asiana (From $9.95) – Specially designed for Asia and Oceania. Data packages available.

If your phone is not yet e-Sim ready, then worry not because OneSim also offer some excellent deals on plastic sims:

  • OneSimCard Universal ($29.95) – Coverage of over 200 countries but with a more limited data service (50+) countries.
  • OneSimCard Expedition ($34.95) – Offers much the same coverage as the OneSim Universal travel SIM but with way more data coverage. It’s the choice for the explorers.

OneSim

How OneSim Works

You’ll get a $10 bonus credit with any OneSIM roaming SIM card purchase, but once that’s gone, you’ll have to continue buying data plans. Rates vary wildly by both the choice of travel SIM card you are using and the country you’re in so you’ll need to check these rates to see if they suit you.

You’ll receive two numbers: a European (Estonian) number and a choice of one from the USA, UK, Australia, or Canada. Incoming calls on the primary European number is free in a large coverage of countries or starting from $0.25/min otherwise. Outgoing calls also start from $0.25/min (dependent on locations) and receiving texts are free.

Casual data rates start at rather hefty $0.20/MB . However, what makes this such a good prepaid international SIM card is that there is a lot of choices to lower your costs. You can buy data bundles ranging from one/two weeks to a month divided by zone or region. There are also discount plans and bundles available for call rates. This makes the OneSIM one of the best international SIM cards for data as well.

So, is it worth it?

Although not strictly the cheapest international SIM card on the market, the wealth of choices means that you can tailor your SIM card to your world travel needs and minimize costs. The added bonus is that OneSim has been kicking around for a while so they know the market well.

They provide a reliable service, as well as a bunch of neat extras, to keep their clients happy chappies. If you’re looking for the best sim card for international travel, OneSIM is definitely one you should consider getting.

#2 Best Global eSim Provider – GigSky

Gigsky-branded

If you have a modern phone (iPhone 11 , Samsung Galaxy S21, etc or above) it will probably be eSim compatible. This means that you don’t actually need a plastic SIM card but can simply download an eSim via GigSky the same way you would download an app.

When I first heard of eSim about one year ago, it was something of a niche product simply because most travellers were using phones and devices that were not eSim compatible. However that is changing fast and by 2024, an estimated 80% of travellers will use eSim. The eSim marketplace is a very exciting one and the providers are contently innovating to come up with some new, better, cheaper packages – according to our research, GigSk are currently leading the pack.

travel sim whatsapp

How GigSky Works

I had the pleasure of reviewing Gigsky and It’s really very simple. You either download the GigSky App (which we do recommend) or else go to their website and check out their “Global Plans”. You buy the package you want (in the 5GB World Plan) and download it not your phone BEFORE you fly, using either a link or a QR code.

The joy of eSim is that you can install it before you leave and then activate as soon as the plane touches down meaning you are rocking and rolling all over the world before you even get your luggage.

GigSky offer 1 Global Package only – 5GB over 30 days for $69.99. I can be topped up (if you somehow burn through all 5GB) but it cannot be extended past the 30 days.

So, Is It Worth It?

Well, $69.99 is a lot for a 30 day package but International Sim Packages do not come cheap. GigSky also have a wide range of global carrier partners meaning their offer better connectively than most platers in this space.

Overall though, in terms of sheer convenience yes GigSky is worth it – you you can browse for and install an eSim from the comfort your device and get it ready to use before you even leave home which saves a whole lotta hassle. However, the package does NOT include an actual phone number which is a bit of a bummer.

#3 Great Global eSim Package – Sim Local

TravelSim

Sim Local is recognized as a global leader in the travel SIM card and eSIM retail market. The company specializes in serving global travellers, enabling them to stay connected while avoiding expensive roaming charges. During my review of Sim Local , I was impressed to see they provide local SIM cards and eSIM profiles directly to customers through a variety of channels, including retail stores, kiosks, vending machines, a mobile app, and an eShop.

Their services are aimed at offering significant savings on data, calls, and texts compared to traditional roaming options, and they also offer a range of mobile handsets and accessories tailored to the needs of travellers.

How Sim Local Works

First up, note that Sim Local are an eSim-only provider so if you’re phone is not eSim ready…go elsewhere. Providing it is, you simply hop over to their site or get the app and check out their global packages. At the time of writing the site offers their own brand one for just $10 for 3 days, or an Orange one that costs $28.00 for 14 days.

I’ll be frank, eSims are still often more expensive than buying physical sims but they are a lot easier to install and to operate and best of all, you can install them before you even leave home. In my view, $28.00 for 10GB of data over 14 days is good value for an international sim but bear in mind it don’t come with a local numero.

#4 A Worldwide SIM Card – WorldSIM

WorldSIM

WorldSIM gets a mention on this list because it’s another puller in the market with some comparatively awesome rates. It’s also got some really weirdly expensive outlying rates. As such, we certainly don’t feel like it’s a fit for the best SIM card for international roaming.

How WorldSim Works

The WorldSIM international SIM card has no purchasing fee- woo! Now, before you get too excited, it does require a top-up of credit at purchase.

That means that you’re paying a minimum of $33.75 plus shipping . For $67.50 of credit, shipping is free.

The casual rates for outgoing calls, texts, and data usage are the cheapest I’ve found so far with data coverage extending to countries missed out on by OneSim. Except, a lot of the rates in various countries for incoming calls are shockingly high.

As for the data bundles? No idea. Their website isn’t working for that page and is just stuck in an infinitely loading loop.

Our gut says no. But, you do you. You shouldn’t base your decisions on buying an international SIM card on the gut instincts of a stranger online. All the same though, our gut says no.

Between the mildly bait-and-switch-y “$0” SIM purchasing fee, the janky and unwieldy website, and the weird incoming call rates that could potentially trap an unwitting consumer, WorldSIM in review doesn’t feel like an international SIM card worth purchasing, especially in comparison to other choices on the market.

Rather than risking being ripped off when buying a local SIM card, get your hands on an international data card instead.

These are the best international  data SIM cards for those of us that scoot by without the extras.

#1 Best Data Only eSIM Card for International Travel – Jetpac

Jetpac eSim

Jetpac is a Singapore based eSIM company who offer packages, designed primarily for travellers and Digital Nomads. They offer various data plans that can be used across many countries, and the service includes features like free airport lounge access if your flight is delayed.

Jetpac eSIMs are compatible with a range of devices, including many models from Apple, Samsung, and Google. To activate a Jetpac eSIM, users need to sign up on the Jetpac website or app, choose a plan that fits their travel needs, and then scan a QR code to install the eSIM on their device.

We love Jetpac for its ease of setup and reliable connectivity. JetPac makes it a handy tool for international travel, ensuring continuous access to mobile data across multiple destinations. While they don’t offer local numbers, we love that most of their packs last for 30 days by default so you can just concentrate on how much data you need.

Wanna know more: Check out our detailed Jetpac eSim card review here.

How it Works

The Jetpac worldwide eSIM card comes in a variety of different data packages. Data can be topped up with a number of plans ranging from 100 MB up to a slammin’ 25 GB ! The prices of data top-ups are:

  • 1 GB – $1
  • 3 GB – $10
  • 5 GB – $25
  • 10 GB – $30
  • 25 GB – $38

Absolutely. I mean, come on it starts at one-freaking-dollar and works all over the world. All in all we’d consider this one of the best pre paid international data only sim cards on the market.

#2 A Simple Data SIM Card for Worldwide Travel – Surfroam

Surfroam

Yay! No prepaid data packages, no contractual mumbo-jumbo, no running out of data right when you settle in for a long Netflix and poop session: Surfroam keeps it Pura Vida!

It’s data-only with coverage of 200+ countries – even Afghanistan and Yemen are covered! So, what’s the go?

Essentially, you pay €45 for the physical SIM card (which includes €25 credit) and then top-up as you go with pack options starting at €25 . You’re charged a pay-as-you-go rate per megabyte starting as low as €0.01/MB . So that’s way cheaper than the KeepGo data roaming sim card, right? Not quite…

Rates vary substantially by country so while this going to be a cheaper option across, say, Europe, it may not necessarily pan out that way in other places. That said, prices are still pretty cheap for most places and tend to beat out KeepGo.

As a final note, there is an eSIM (€30) available with the same data rates.

Ok, so ‘simple’ might be stretching it upon reflection, however, once you’re away, its streams ablaze! If you’re jet-setting and changing countries a lot, you will need to stay keyed in as to the rates .

Otherwise, the coverage significantly beats out KeepGo, and in many cases, Surfroam will end up being the cheapest international data SIM card you can purchase. It’s the simplest choice for staying connected pretty much anywhere in the world.

#3 The Best International SIM Card for Europe – Orange Holiday Europe

Orange Holiday Zen/Europe

Are you just doing a little banger holiday in Europe and need a physical SIM card for your travels? Orange has got you covered. Specifically:

  • Orange Holiday Europe SIM Card
  • Orange Holiday Zen SIM Card

The Orange Holiday Zen is for light usage or a short trip. It’s a straight prepaid SIM card for travellers in Europe and it couldn’t be simpler.

For $27.29 , you get 8 GB of data, 30 minutes of calls worldwide, 200 texts, all lasting for 14 days before it expires. The Holiday Zen covers 30 countries in Europe including all the heavy-hitters, if you need a sim in Italy , Greece or Spain it’s perfect but it certainly doesn’t cover all of Europe (my boy Serbia – forever underrepresented). Still, this makes it one of the best European SIM Cards for travellers.

The Orange Holiday Europe takes all of that and just upgrades it: 20 GB in data, 120 minutes, and 1000 texts for $44 . The same coverage of countries applies and it’s a 14-day expiry again.

Orange also partners with a bunch of networks around the world- even offering an Israeli sim card called partner. If you take a look around their website, you can find more far-flung networks than you expected!

Both cards are able to be topped up online for more credit.

Yeah, so I wouldn’t call ‘30 countries in Europe’ an internationally roaming SIM card, but it is a super simple choice for anyone just travelling to Europe for a holiday. It’ll keep you safe in an emergency thanks to that fact that it’s not a data only service. Plus: you’ll have a SIM ready from the moment you land!

Orange is a pretty major sim provider in France so you’ll have a consistent connection. There’s no constant checking of rates calculators either. It’s just a perfectly simple prepaid SIM card for any travellers heading to Europe.

Y’all want more? Another option to look at is getting an Airalo eSim instead.

That depends on how you travel. If you’re adept at buying prepaid SIM cards locally when you hit the ground, then I wouldn’t worry.

However, for the people that an international SIM card suits the travelling style and needs of, then yes, definitely. I think if you’re that person, then you probably already know that you’re that person.

I think eSIMS are the future gamechanger here. You can download a digital SIM to your phone which has eSIM support.

I use a second phone to provide data to my main phone via bluetooth internet sharing. Wifi sharing can be used as well but bluetooth uses less power. On my main phone I leave the mobile data turned off and use the paired second phone for data. This allows me to use my main phone for Whatsapp, iMessage, email, etc.

10/10 review – exactly the type of info I was after. Plus, I liked your no BS style of writing. Thanks.

Thanks! Very useful! My main concern is regarding how long do the sim cards remain active if you are not buying credit regularly. I usually travel at least once or twice to congresses per year, but I wonder if some of these cards would stop working after a long time inactive. Is that information available for the cards discussed here? Cheers!

Heya, absolutely you can find that info! It’ll be in the terms and conditions/fine print for individual cards/plans. I’d like to say most last at least a year (which always seemed standard for SIM cards in general), but defs check that before you go buying any SIMs. Good question though!

You guys should definitely include DENT, a block chain based international E-Sim card, that offers flexibel data exchange. You can sell your unused data and always find the cheapest offer worldwide and cross boarder operational. Can’t be missed from this list!

Dude – hectic! I’m defs not about to go and update this article, but I looked and DENT seems pretty legit and totally worth the investigation. Anyone reading these comments, you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not scoping them out at least! 😀

A beginner’s guide to travel eSIMs: How to use eSIMs for travel

Table of contents, what is a travel esim, and why do i need one.

One of the latest innovations in travel tech, eSIMs are digital SIM cards embedded directly into the processors of mobile devices. Compatible devices come pre-equipped with an eSIM, so there’s no need to buy and install a card manually.

While eSIMs can be used at home, there are notable advantages to using eSIMs for travel. It’s super easy to switch between carriers and plans, which minimizes service interruptions while you’re globetrotting.

Additionally, there’s no need to visit a store in person to get a new SIM card or buy online and wait for it to be shipped to your home. eSIM cards can be purchased online and activated immediately using a QR from your carrier. Plus, there’s a huge range of plans offered by many different providers, giving you plenty of control over how much you pay based on the travel data you think you’ll need.

Are there any drawbacks to using an eSIM for travel?

Not all carriers support eSIMs, and not all devices are eSIM compatible. However, eSIM usage is growing dramatically, so mobile users can expect to see these limitations decline in the coming years.

Where can I buy a travel eSIM?

  • Airalo (200+ countries, regional plans available)
  • Flexiroam (200+ countries and territories, regional plans available)
  • Nomad (165+ countries, regional plans available)
  • GlobaleSIM (150+ countries, regional plans available)
  • Ubigi (200+ countries)
  • Maya Mobile (190+ countries, regional plans available)
  • BNESIM (200+ countries, regional plans available)
  • eSIM2Fly (100+ countries, regional plans available)
  • GigSky (190+ countries, regional plans available)
  • RedteaGO (100+ countries, regional plans available)

How to deactivate your regular SIM and activate your eSIM for travel

Before activating your new eSIM card, deactivate your regular SIM card. This will protect your personal data and help you avoid getting hit with unnecessary roaming charges.

Deactivating a SIM card is pretty easy. Here’s how it works:

  • Back up your phone, including contacts, messages, and any other data.
  • Notify your mobile carrier about your travel plans and ask that your SIM card be temporarily deactivated. Your carrier will guide you through the process.
  • Once deactivated, remove your SIM card from your phone and store it in a safe place.

Activating an eSIM for travel is even easier than activating/deactivating a physical SIM card. Usually, you’ll need to contact your travel plan carrier and get a QR code. Scan this into your phone to activate the eSIM.

The following tips may help if you’re having trouble knowing how to use an eSIM when traveling:

  • Make sure your device is eSIM compatible
  • Check your wireless connection. Restart your phone if necessary.
  • Re-scan your carrier’s QR code
  • Contacting your carrier for help

Check your network coverage and device compatibility

With travel eSIMs, you can stay connected almost anywhere in the world. Many new cell phone models are eSIM compatible. If you have an old phone, you may need to upgrade to a newer model to begin using eSIMs for travel. Check out a list of eSIM-compatible devices here .

eSIM plans piggyback on domestic carriers’ networks. To find out where you can get service in a given country, visit the network provider’s website or contact the network provider directly. If you’ve already landed, apps like OpenSignal (Android and iOS), LTE Discovery (Android), and Network Cell Info Lite (Android) provide info on network strength in your area and surrounding areas.

How much travel data do I need?

To get the most out of your travel eSIM, you’ll want to strategically plan your data usage. Up to 5GB of data is good if you don’t use your device often, while moderate users might want to be safe and go for a 10GB travel data plan. Look for higher data plans if you’re an active online gamer or stream a lot of high-quality videos.

Here are a few tips for minimizing your data usage while traveling:

  • Connect to Wi-Fi whenever possible (airports, hotels, cafes, etc.). But consider using a VPN to prevent unauthorized access to your device and data.
  • Disable automatic device updates and limit the number of apps that run in the background. Many phones make it easy to do this with data-saving mode.
  • Don’t stream much music or video, or download files in advance to avoid streaming while you travel.
  • Use data compression apps to reduce the size of web pages and images.
  • Disable data roaming to avoid automatically using foreign networks.
  • Go on airplane mode when you’re not using your device.

How to stay safe when using a travel eSIM

Compared to physical SIM cards, eSIM cards are much harder to hack because you can’t simply remove the card from a device.

Even though eSIMs reduce the risk of your SIM card getting lost or stolen, it’s still important to safeguard your personal data while abroad. One of the best ways to protect your personal data while using Wi-Fi is with a virtual private network (VPN). VPNs create a tunnel of sorts through which you can access the internet without your personal data being visible to others using the same Wi-Fi network.

Another great way to stay safe while using public Wi-Fi is to disable file sharing and AirDrop. Doing so makes it harder for nearby devices to access your files. Also, avoid accessing non-secured websites. Look for “https://” in the URL, which indicates that data is encrypted when being transferred between your device and the server.

Can I use an eSIM internationally?

Yes. Some eSIM plans offer service in multiple countries or regions (USA & Canada, Europe, Asia-Pacific, etc.). Others are country specific. Before you buy an eSIM, make sure it supports your destination country.

Can I get a global eSIM?

You can’t buy an eSIM card that works in every country, but you can buy an eSIM that offers service in multiple countries or regions. If you’re planning a trip around the world (sounds exciting!), you might need to get multiple eSIM plans and activate them separately as you travel.

Can I get a travel data plan on an eSIM card?

Yes, it’s possible to buy and activate a data-only eSIM travel plan on your phone. Although, if you want to do more than just access the internet on your device, you’ll need a full-service eSIM plan that also lets you text and make calls.

Why settle with a physical SIM card, when you can get a digital SIM card that you don’t have to stand in line at a store to buy and that you can activate and manage remotely? Use an eSIM to avoid the hassle of interrupted mobile service when traveling internationally.

You can’t yet use a travel eSIM with all phones and providers. But more and more eSIM options are popping up on the market, so stay ahead of the trends and start riding the wave.

Guide to international and travel SIMs

Tempted by an international or travel SIM? Here's everything you need to know to stay connected when overseas.

Fergus Halliday

Travel SIMs explained

  • Travel SIM vs Local SIM
  • Travel SIM vs Public WiFi

Best Travel SIM for Australians

How to use your phone internationally.

Man and woman inside plane smiling wearing hats

While there are plenty of great international roaming plans available to Aussies, it can sometimes be cheaper and easier to opt for an international or travel SIM. There are pros and cons to consider for both, but only one option lets you trot across the globe with near-total confidence that you'll stay connected to your friends and family back home.

If you're not sure where to start, here's a quick explanation of what international and travel SIMs are, what providers are available to Aussies and what the best value options and alternatives look like.

International travel SIM cards

OneSimCard Universal E 3-in-1 Travel SIM Card for over 200 Countries

From $39.95

*Pricing and deals only accurate as of last page update.

An international or travel SIM is a SIM card that you can take with you when you go overseas. It's not built for any particular region or country but is designed to work in multiple or as many as possible. The upshot of this is that an international or travel SIM can save you the trouble of having to worry about expensive global roaming charges or the physical hassle of picking up a local SIM card.

The only catch is that international and travel SIM cards can sometimes get quite expensive. Convenience is rarely cheap but compared to the likes of a postpaid local SIM or the international roaming packages available through Australian mobile providers , the value proposition involved isn't always a great one.

That said, an international or travel SIM can be a particularly good fit for those who plan to visit multiple countries over the course of a trip. It'll cost you, but there is real convenience in having one SIM work across the entirety of your journey rather than having to worry about swapping between them or topping up your roaming data between each destination can sometimes be worth it.

Fortunately, there are a few alternatives available for those looking to stay connected overseas on a budget.

Alternative #1 - Buy a local SIM

As mentioned, a cheap local SIM or long expiry prepaid plan is a solid alternative to an expensive international one. However, your mileage may vary here depending on your destination.

If you're a frequent visitor to a given country, you probably already have a good idea of what brands are available and where the easiest place to pick up a local prepaid SIM is. For everyone else, there's the airport.

In any case, the advantages of a local SIM card over a travel one are that it's usually cheaper and has better value. The main disadvantages are that you might have to do some research and make time to secure your SIM either in advance or soon after your flight touches down.

Check out our country-specific travel guides for information on buying a local SIM in popular destinations:

  • The best SIM cards and phone plans for travelling to New Zealand

Alternative #2 - Free Public Wi-Fi

If you're looking to breeze around abroad on a budget but stay connected when you need it, then bouncing between free public WiFi networks might be your best bet.

As with Australia, you should be able to find a fair few free WiFi networks scattered throughout the public libraries, hotels, cafes, attractions and city centres. If you're not sure where to start, there are also apps like InstaBridge and SpeedSpot that can help highlight free WiFi networks near your location.

Staying connected this way isn't super convenient, but it might not cost you a cent and it can be a viable alternative to travel SIMs if you don't mind relying on messaging apps like WhatsApp, Signal and Vibr rather than traditional calls and texts.

If you're going away on a holiday and are happy to for the peace of mind that comes with knowing you'll be connected throughout your whole trip, an international or travel SIM can be a solid way to go.

Here's a quick rundown of a few providers you might want to consider.

Flexiroam isn't like other travel SIM providers. Rather than ask you to swap over your Australian SIM card for an international one designed for global roaming, this take on a travel SIM relies on a thin microchip that attaches to your existing SIM.

Clip that chip to your current SIM card, activate it via the Flexiroam mobile app and you'll be able to swap to and stay connected through the Flexiroam network in more than 150 countries.

While Flexiroam is compatible with both (almost all) Android and iOS devices, there are a few catches to this setup. For instance, you'll only get 4G in around 70 of those destinations. In the other 80 or so, you'll have to rely on 3G.

The other caveat here is that international texting isn't supported, though calls are available through both the Flexiroam app and messaging services like WeChat and WhatsApp.

At the time of writing, the most popular Flexiroam travel SIM plans are priced as follows:

  • 10GB for USD$269.99 for 360 days
  • 5GB for USD$149.99 for 360 days
  • 7GB for USD$199.99 for 360 days

GigSky is another travel SIM provider that Aussies might want to consider. It offers both country and region-specific prepaid plans, as well as a global one. This provider's big selling point is that you can sign up and set up a GigSkyu travel plan without even leaving your home.

So long as you're running an Android 10 (or more recent device) or iOS 13 (and above), all you need to do is download the GigSky app and add a travel plan using that.

Pricing for GigSky's World Plan is as follows:

  • 5GB for $59.99 for 30 days

While it's a lot easier to use your phone overseas than it used to be, there are a few things you might want to double-check before you disembark.

Is your phone unlocked?

Most devices should work overseas, but you'll need to ensure it's unlocked as this can sometimes result in issues with foreign networks.

If you bought your phone on a plan or outright, it will be unlocked. But if you bought it with a prepaid SIM, it might be locked to a specific network. If this is the case, you may need to speak to your provider about unlocking your device. For help unlocking a Telstra phone, check out this guide.

Is your device GSM or CDMA capable?

In addition to making sure your device isn't locked to a specific Australian network, you'll also need to make sure that it meets the frequency specifications required to play nice with the mobile networks of your destination.

Australia uses the GSM standard for mobile devices, as do many other countries. However, that standard isn't universal and there are exceptions. For instance, the US, Japan and South Korea use a combination of GSM and CDMA technologies.

The short version is that Australian-bought devices should work on GSM networks overseas, provided your phone is compatible with your destination's available frequencies. Newer flagship phones, such as the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy range, should support just about any frequency you encounter out of the box. Older devices may run into problems so if you're worried then be sure to do your research well before you head to the airport.

Replacing Your SIM Card for International Roaming

travel sim whatsapp

Reggie Casagrande/Getty Images

If you're traveling overseas and plan to bring your cell phone , it's important to make sure you've thought about the different ways to save money before you go.

The first place to start is to make sure your cell phone will actually work in the country you're visiting. Different service providers have different service zones, and while you can always access Wi-Fi, you may not be able to use data. From there, sign up for international roaming and perhaps international data roaming plans offered by your cell phone service provider. However, some service provider have terrible international data plans that either don't work, are incredibly expensive, or both. In that case, you should consider some money-saving alternatives for international cell phone roaming charges. If you travel frequently and don't mind juggling multiple devices, consider purchasing a phone specifically for international trips. If you want to keep your phone, but use it abroad, consider turning it into a native phone.

Going Native

Another way to save money while traveling is by turning your cell phone into a "native" cell phone by replacing the SIM card on the phone.

Many travelers don't know they can replace their phone's SIM card (the little electronic memory card that identifies and configures the phone) with a local (or country-specific) SIM card. In general, when you do that, all incoming calls will be free, and outgoing calls (local or international) will be significantly cheaper. You also should be able to use 3G and LTE data without incurring astronomical fees.

SIM Cards Change Your Number

You need to understand that when you replace your SIM card, you'll automatically be getting a new phone number since cell phone numbers are actually associated with the SIM cards and not the individual phones. You should hold on to your existing SIM and simply pop it back in when you get back home. If you end up putting in a new SIM card, make sure you share your new number with the people whom you want to be able to reach you, and/or forward the calls from your existing cell phone number to the new number (but check to see if that will incur long-distance charges).

What to Do Before & After Buying a New SIM Card

If you're considering replacing the SIM card on your phone, you also need to make sure you have an unlocked phone . Most phones are restricted, or "locked," to only work the specific cell phone provider you originally signed up with. They essentially program the phone so that it won't work on other carriers' networks. In most cases, though, consumers can unlock their phones by typing in a special sequence of keystrokes so that the phone will work on other carriers' cell phone services and with other carriers' SIM cards.

Make sure you brush up on your destination's policies for tourist or foreign SIM cards. For example, it's not very easy for tourists to get a local SIM card in India, so advance planning is necessary.

Also be sure to verify that your phone supports the right network frequencies. This can be checked online with websites like Will My Phone Work. All you need to know is your phone's model and submodel and the carrier you wish to use it on. The last thing you'll need to know is what size SIM card your phone requires.

Once you have your new SIM card, make sure you keep the old one in a safe place, you'll need it once you're back home!

Where to Buy a SIM Card

If you've been in an international airport, then you've likely seen kiosks selling various types of SIM cards. You can purchase prepaid SIM cards that are valid for a certain number of days after activation or for a certain amount of data. These SIM cards can be used for data only, or a combination of data, voice, and texts. Certain destinations also sell SIM cards at convenience stores and of course, in mobile phone stores. You can also buy them in advance online.

Other Options

If replacing your SIM card is too complex or confusing, don't worry. You can also save money on your cell phone bill by using Internet calling services such as Skype or Facetime. Just make sure you have data roaming turned off.

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card. Unlike traditional physical SIM cards that need to be inserted into a device, an eSIM is built into the device itself. This advancement allows users to choose a network provider, activate a plan, or switch carriers without needing a physical SIM card.

Here are some key points about eSIMs:

  • Digital Profile: The eSIM can be programmed to adopt any mobile operator's profile, making it flexible for users to switch or choose their desired network provider.
  • Convenience: As there's no need for a physical card, you can activate a cellular plan right from your device.
  • Smaller Device Footprint: Without the need for a physical SIM slot in some cases, manufacturers can potentially save space in devices, allowing for more compact designs or room for other components.
  • Support for Multiple Plans: Devices with eSIMs can support multiple cellular plans, which is especially useful for dual SIM operations where one might be a traditional SIM and the other an eSIM.
  • Ideal for IoT: eSIM technology is particularly beneficial for the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, where small gadgets and tools can connect to cellular networks without the bulk of a physical SIM card.
  • Travel: For frequent travelers, eSIMs can simplify the process of switching to a local carrier when abroad.

While eSIM technology offers several advantages, its adoption depends on mobile network operators supporting it. Many operators around the world have begun offering eSIM services, but availability might vary by region and provider.

To activate an eSIM on an iPhone, follow these general steps. Remember that the exact process might vary slightly depending on your carrier and iOS version. These are the steps you would typically follow:

  • Check Compatibility:  Ensure your carrier supports eSIM activation and your iPhone model is compatible with eSIM technology.
  • Obtain an eSIM QR Code:  Contact your carrier and request an eSIM activation QR code or activation details.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi or Cellular Data:  Ensure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data, as you'll need an internet connection for the activation process.
  • Access Settings:  Open your iPhone's "Settings" app.
  • Cellular (or Mobile) > Add Cellular Plan:  Navigate to "Cellular" (or "Mobile" in some regions) and tap on "Add Cellular Plan."
  • Scan the QR Code:  If you received a QR code, use your iPhone's camera to scan the QR code provided by your carrier. Enter the necessary information manually if you received activation details without a QR code.
  • Confirm and Activate:  Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm the details and activate the eSIM. You might be asked to restart your iPhone after activation.

Two versions of this product are available: one is data-only, while the other supports both voice and data services. The data-only version permits you to use data exclusively, whereas the other version allows you to make or receive calls, send or receive SMS messages, and use data.

Apple states that the iPhone 14 can accommodate up to eight eSIMs, with the capability to actively use two eSIMs simultaneously for calls, texts, and data usage. Immediate delivery of eSIM. Amazingly simple to install on iOS by taking a screenshot of the QR code then installing from photos. Was connected to online data within minutes and there’s an option to check usage by signing into account. Highly recommend and will definitely use again

Travel eSIM for Caribbean

I ordered an E-Travel SIM for South Africa. Initially I had real issues even following the steps in the email. The customer service was excellent, quick to respond and reach out. They did something at their end and the SIM began to work. Not only that, it had been 2 days into my 7 day all you can data package and it reset the ESim to a full 7 days! The data worked seemlessly throughout my trip in Cape Town, Franschoek and Stellenbosch. I would definitely use eTravelSim again for data in countries I do not have it in as part of my contract. I even ordered a 2nd ESim for another 5 days as extended my trip. The only thing I'd say is I only wish they had a 1 & 2 day option for all you need data.

Travel eSIM for South Africa

This is my first travel experience with eSIM and after one I got from elsewhere stopped working suddenly I had no choice to get another one. Found this one via Google and paid next to nothing for it. 50 GB of data is much more than what i may need but it’s great not to have to worry about it. Getting good 5G connection, couldn’t be happier.

Travel eSIM for Thailand

I recommend this service for roaming especially after being charged over six times at the airport for what I paid for this eSIM after getting to the airport and searching online. I am pleased with the ease and speed of getting this installed. Will be using the service again when I travel. Recommended.

Travel eSIM for Turkey

I have to say what a great service this is. It is reasonably priced and really easy to set up. Just scan a QR code sent via email and that's it! Just wish I knew if this when I was in Australia last year. The other bonus is it hasn't gone to waste as it turns out the data still worked when I got back to the UK and I had the benefit of using 2 mobile providers depending on who had the best signal for the area.

I had to buy an Esim mainly for data during my trip to Turkey in February 2024 and I must admit I was extremely satisfied. During the installation phase, the ETravelSim team supported me very efficiently till late time until my eSIM become functional. Once installed, the unlimited version I bought worked perfectly for me during my whole trip with an excellent coverage. The service and the product are commendable. Thank you.

Turkey eSIM Recharge

I have been using the eTravelSim for some time now and this was my 7th or 8th purchase although first time used in Saudi and like other countries it did not disappoint. Very easy to purchase and set up. Up and running within fire minutes. Also easy to just purchase on your phone and setup for others in your group of friends and family.

Travel eSIM for Saudi Arabia

I was hesitant about getting this eSIM because compared to others it’s much cheaper and so I thought it may not work. I’m glad I went with this company as the eSIM worked perfectly while I was in Turkey. Easy to understand instructions and fast setup! Definitely recommend as product as described and most cost effective option I found. Very satisfied!

Prior touring India as a group, information was shared that eTravelSim would be a valuable asset to purchase. The options of packets to purchase were perfect, very reasonably priced, easy to follow downloading instructions and above all, the reliability and rest of mind while in India while using the service was everything the company promised would be. Perfect! 10/10.

Travel eSIM for India

This eSIM was recommended to me by a friend. The process of buying & downloading was easy & very quick. No problems encountered with overall reception etc while on holiday in South Africa. Good value for money.

All good. Customer service powered by human beings, eSIM caveman simple to install and activate, data plan works very well, you also get a local voice number, what else do you want?

I went to spain and the sim worked perfectly and immediately Receiving calls, using data it was all amazing I highly recommend this in future travels

Travel eSIM for Spain

Went on the web searched for a tourist sim came across eTravelsim and followed the simple steps to purchase and install the eSIM. Amazing how it only takes a few clicks and you’re up and running. As for the price for 15days it’s exceptional value and a cheap way to keep you connected. Highly recommend them.

The purchase was easy, everything was easy to understand, activation was also easy, I got confused (I am not the smartest person on earth, I cannot see the matrix!) sent an email and they answered to me right away and were always willing to help. As soon as I landed and turned everything I needed on (or off as applicable) I was able to get my cellphone working with the UK number and data. I purchased the e-sim at my home airpoort before boarding and it was all perfect. The only thing I would advise based on my experience and on how easy it all was, just do the activation process when you land in UK it will be easier that way, you will get it working (based on my experience) right away and it will take you a few minutes, so you can do it on one of the chairs while waiting for your luggage ot once you get it before going out

Travel eSIM for UK

Getting eSim was easy as ordering food online. You select the plan you want, pay with Apple Pay and get connected in 5 mins. Amazing coverage and data speeds and i was pleased to see roaming was enabled when we went to Italy. I opted for unlimited data and it never had any issues. Highly recommended

Man involved in spying for Pakistan arrested in Gujarat

Saqlain had bought an indian sim card and got his whatsapp activated, and it was being operated by his pakistani handlers to inject spyware..

Listen to Story

Spy

  • Jamnagar resident Mohammed Saqlain spying for Pakistan
  • Would hack data from security personnel's phone via spyware
  • Data of security personnel deployed in Jammu-Kashmir hacked

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Sunday arrested a man who was absconding in a case linked with espionage for Pakistan.

Mohammed Saqlain, a resident of Jamnagar in Gujarat, was involved in espionage activities at Pakistan's behest.

As per the charges against him, Saqlain had bought an Indian SIM card and got his WhatsApp activated, which was being operated by his Pakistani handlers.

The number was used for spying against the Indian Army personnel deployed in Jammu and Kashmir and confidential information was being leaked to Pakistani operatives.

In October 2023, Gujarat ATS arrested 53-year-old espionage agent Labhsankar Maheswari from Tarapur (Gujarat), based on specific input provided by Military Intelligence.

As per sources, Saqlain had provided an activated SIM card to Labhsankar Maheshwari, an erstwhile Pakistani citizen, who got Indian citizenship and was arrested in October 2023 by ATS, which was acting upon a Military Intelligence tip-off about a Pakistani Intelligence agency targeting Indian Military personnel on WhatsApp by sending spyware.

The case got eyeballs as Maheshwari was a Pakistani, who came to Gujarat for his wife's pregnancy treatment and 'became an Indian', but subsequently was held for spying.

Saqlain had gone absconding after the arrest of Maheshwari in October 2023.

The conspiracy came to light last year in July, when Military Intelligence officials detected a nefarious campaign by a Pakistani Intelligence Operative (PIO).

This operative was using WhatsApp number- 90xxxx6792, to compromise Android mobile handsets of serving defence forces personnel, mostly having wards studying in different Army Public Schools (APS) across the country.

He would lure them into installing certain malicious Android applications (".apk" files) mostly under the garb of a campaign so named "Har Ghar Tiranga" just before Independence Day (last year).

The WhatsApp user, posing as an APS official, used to send the malicious application to such targets with a text message encouraging them to install the application and upload their ward's photo with the national flag on the application, so as to participate in the competition.
