A very interesting visit that interested children and adults alike. The explanations are sometimes a little long, and unfortunately, access to Notre-Dame is limited. A few cartoon scenes could be projected on a tablet to make things more interactive.

Original tour with a very friendly guide. But apart from a few anecdotes here and there about the various cartoons, it lacked content about the different places visited. The tour was also somewhat short given the price.

We were lucky enough to have the guide only for our group of 6, very nice tour and we learned a lot. There weren't too many people in Paris, so we were able to see the monuments and places concerned + the visuals on the tablet, very good. We'll look at Disney/Pixar differently next time.

Very interesting visit, our guide was able to adapt to our group of adults. He effectively replaced his tablet (which had broken down) with his smartphone: it was great to see illustrations and extracts from the cartoons (and portraits of the famous men involved). The content was much more than the Paris of the cartoons: the guide shared his passion for the history of the city of Paris, in a precise and fascinating way.

The 10 Best Animated Films With Paris as a Backdrop
For live action features, there is no city like Paris. The bistros. The sidewalk cafes. The bakeries filled with baguettes and croissant. The nightclubs with their exotic can-can dancers. Every cliche in the cinematic book. Fimmakers from Woody Allen to innumerable French auteurs like Renoir and Chabrol love the gorgeous city of light. It exudes elegance and romance. It offers stunning locations and famous landmarks. It’s a backdrop with a bounty of available angles and approaches. It’s also an easy symbol, shortcut for emotions otherwise needing explanation or examination. Of course, not every genre finds the town as tantalizing. While cartoons occasionally visit the banks of the River Seine (it’s the home to Pepe Le Pew, after all), most pen and ink offerings avoid the city.
Still, there are a few celebrated examples of Paris as an animated backdrop. In recognition of the latest (see number four on our list, out of DVD and Blu-ray this week), we bring you this collection of 10 films that made the magical metropolis their narrative home. Many are well known and acclaimed. Others are so obscure it requires an encyclopedic knowledge of the artform to discover their delights. In all cases, Paris plays an important part in the storyline, highlighting the humorous, and sometimes hazardous existence along the Champs elysees . In all cases, the artists have found unique and iconic ways of representing the famous skyline, bringing everything from the Arc de Triomphe to the Eiffel Tower to vivid life. Even something geared specifically to the elementary school set (like our number ten choice) does a great job of showing why Paris is such a special place.
In this sequel to the popular film, which was in turn based on the well loved Nickelodeon TV series, we find Tommy Pickles and his pals traveling to the title locale to find a new mom for depressed buddy Chuckie Finister. Once in Paris, they run into the villainous Coco LaBouche, who needs the kids to help her take over an amusement park. With its wonky animation style and clever grown-up references (including homages to Bugsy Malone and The Godfather ), this remains the best of the Rugrats efforts – and a nice Parisian primer for the wee ones.
Only part of this film takes place in Paris. The rest tells the urban legend version of the Russian Grand Duchess and her “survival” of a curse placed on her family by the mad monk Rasputin. Co-directed by Don Bluth (best known as a House of Mouse exile and the mastermind behind several celebrated efforts like The Secret of NIHM , An American Tale , and The Land Before Time ) and featuring many of the genre staples (songs, cute creatures), it was an unexpected hit. It was also the first film from Fox’s Animation division.
As the ’70s started, Disney’s post-Walt work truly began to suffer. Though he personally approved this film, he died four years before its release and the lack of his input on the final product shows. There are many who enjoy this buoyant effort, including the voice work of Eva Gabor, Phil Harris, and Scatman Crothers. On the other hand, when compared to what came before, as well as what was soon to come, this uneven effort indicates a company without clear creative leadership. Not as bad as one remembers, but definitely not a Golden Era Classic.
As odd as any entry on this list. A post-Wonderland Alice daydreams about visiting Paris. Almost immediately, she is visited by a magical mouse who offers her some enchanted cheese. Before you can see “eat me” our heroine has shrunk down to rodent size and sets off for adventures in the city of light. What we then get are adaptations of five short stories, almost none of them linked to a fall down a rabbit hole or a walk through Lewis Carroll’s creative playground. Surreal, and rather strange.
As part of Disney’s mid-’90s dip back toward the routine and mundane, this movie has many detractors. After all, how do you take Victor Hugo’s book about a deformed, lovesick bell-ringing and turn it into a feel good musical? Well, the House of Mouse tried, and the results were uneven if entertaining. In fact, many critics complimented the company for not going overboard with the sap, though many found the songs beyond maudlin. Still, the character design and animation are amazing, giving this film a look that often surpasses its story.
5 – 1
Adapted from a slick hip-hop French TV series, this film follows the escapades of two criminals whose friendship is tested when one falls in love with a rich woman and vows to go straight. Loaded with oddball caricatures of various urban types and backed by a nonstop rap beat, the movie’s view of Paris is one of dirt and grime, graffiti covering the walls and various apartment building halls. Translated into English with voice work from Jimmy Fallon (replacing a far better Vincent Cassel), Seth Green, and Diane Kruger, it’s decent, if slightly dated in its commentary.
Luc Besson produced this amazing looking movie from the man who directed Shark Tale and The Road to Eldorado . The title creature is a flea, made massive by a combination of kooky chemicals in a scientist’s lab. Once big, the bug wants to do nothing but sing. Soon, he is a Paris sensation. As a clever combination of Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame it works, and the CGI is spectacular. The story slips up toward the end, but overall, it’s a shame it took so long for this film to reach American shores.
It was Judy Garland’s one and only appearance doing voice over work for animation. She even brought along her Wizard of Oz composers to add a few tunes. With additional vocal stylings from newcomer Robert Goulet and work from such talents as Mel Blanc, June Foray, Paul Frees, and animator Chuck Jones (in violation of his contract with Warner Bros.), it had all the earmarks of a potential hit – or a massive flop. Luckily, the G rated brought in the wee ones with their parents hoping to catch one of their favorite old Hollywood greats.
The story centers on the title feline and its devious double life. By day, it is a well loved pet of a police officer’s daughter. At night, it is the hard working helper of a master thief. Utilizing hand drawn animation techniques and an unusual, artistically impressive design style, the movie went from little known French artifact to an Oscar contender (it lost to Rango ). A clever combination of cartoon noir and Hitchcock homage, it’s the kind of kid flick that adults will adore as well.
This was the moment when Pixar “grew up.” Sure, the story centered on a clever little mouse who wanted to become a chef (pure kid’s stuff), but the whole attitude and approach was given a post-adolescent polish by The Incredibles own Brad Bird. The result was an Oscar, a new respect for the perfectionist animation company, and a belief that nothing could stop these hard working wizards. While groused about at the time, the years have been kind to the fascinating foodie film.

Windmill sails fall from iconic Paris cabaret club Moulin Rouge
The sails of the landmark red windmill atop the Moulin Rouge , the most celebrated cabaret club in Paris , fell to the ground overnight in the early hours of Thursday, much to the sorrow of tourists.
“The Moulin Rouge, in 135 years of history, has experienced many adventures but it is true that for the wings, this is the first time that this has happened,” general manager Jean-Victor Clerico told reporters.
“A little before 2 a.m., the wings of the windmill gave way, fell on the boulevard and fortunately at this time the boulevard was empty of passers-by. We are relieved this morning especially to know that there were no injuries.”
A spokesperson for the Moulin Rouge said the theatre would investigate the cause of the incident with experts and insurers. Clerico said whatever the cause it was not intentional.
The Moulin Rouge, founded in 1889, became a global symbol of end-of-the-century Parisian culture, its famed can-can dancers widely depicted in paintings by avant-garde artists of the era such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Georges Seurat. Nowadays the audience is largely made up of tourist groups.
“I hope they will build it up again so it will be as it always has been, the old Moulin Rouge,” Danish tourist Lise Thygesen said.
German tourist Florence Chevalier said: “It’s weird to me, (the Moulin Rouge), it’s Paris. It’s like the Eiffel Tower, it’s Paris. It’s weird, you can’t say it any other way.”
And it wasn’t just tourists that came to see what happened.
“I heard it on the radio. As I live next door, I wanted to come and see with my own eyes what it was like and it’s very sad,” local resident Laurence Plu said. “It’s not the Moulin anymore, it lost his wings, it lost his soul.”
The murky facts about Trump’s failure to visit American war dead near Paris
“I have to say, there are a lot of things that Donald Trump has said and done that I find extremely offensive. But one that offends me the most is when he refused, as president, to visit an American cemetery outside of Paris when he was president. Why? He said that those soldiers who gave their lives were, quote — it was his quote — ‘suckers’ and ‘losers.’”
— Biden, remarks in Scranton, Penn . April 16
“I was reminded of what my opponent said in Paris not too long ago. They asked him to go visit American gravesites. He said ‘no.’ He wouldn’t do it. Because they were all ‘suckers’ and ‘losers.’ I’m not making that up.”
— President Biden , remarks in Pittsburgh , April 17
“What I was thinking about when I was standing there was when Trump refused to go up to the memorial for veterans in Paris, and he said they were a bunch of ‘suckers’ and ‘losers.’”
— Biden, remarks to reporters in Avoca, Penn. , April 17
Three times last week, President Biden referenced one of the signature controversies of the Trump presidency — whether he refused to visit a cemetery of war dead outside Paris because he thought soldiers who gave their lives in combat were losers and suckers.
The original source for this story was an article in the Atlantic by Jeffrey Goldberg titled: “ Trump: Americans Who Died in War Are ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers. ’” Goldberg, citing “four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day,” reported that Trump canceled a visit to Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018 because he did not believe it was important to honor American war dead.
“In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, ‘Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers,’” Goldberg wrote. “In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 Marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood [during World War I] as ‘suckers’ for getting killed.”
Trump, on repeated occasions, vehemently denied this account. During the 2020 campaign, he claimed that 25 people had denied the story on the record — though at best the White House could produce 14 names of people traveling with the president , and most of those people were not present for the relevant conversations or issued carefully parsed statements. An exception was John R. Bolton, then Trump’s national security adviser and later a sharp critic, who said the trip was scrubbed because of weather.
In 2023, however, John F. Kelly, Trump’s White House chief of staff in 2018 — who had previously not commented on the controversy — issued a statement to CNN that Trump “rants that our most precious heroes who gave their lives in America’s defense are ‘losers’ and wouldn’t visit their graves in France.”
Absent a recording, there’s no way to definitively confirm the story. (The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment.) But here’s a guide for readers to make their own assessment.
A dispute between on-the-record sources
John F. Kelly: He was Trump’s chief of staff and so is a credible source. Note, however, that his statement is carefully worded and does not directly say Trump refused to visit the graves because he thought they were losers. He says Trump thinks war dead are losers and he did not want to go to the cemetery. Both could be true — but not connected.
John R. Bolton: He was national security adviser and is also a credible source. His defense of Trump is significant because he wrote a book, “ The Room Where It Happened ,” that depicts the president in highly unflattering terms. He wrote that Trump was “displeased throughout the trip” and quoted then-White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders as saying Trump was in a “royal funk.” (The trip came right after the midterm elections that cost Republicans control of the House of Representatives.)
In a telephone interview, Bolton said “I don’t doubt that Trump didn’t want to go.” But he said that the Marine pilots who fly the presidential helicopter Marine One announced that the weather was so bad that it would not be safe to use it. Traveling by road to the cemetery 50 miles northeast of Paris was estimated to take 90 to 120 minutes. “We went round and round” about whether to make the trip, as other world leaders — such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron — were traveling by car. But, as Bolton put it, “they don’t carry a nuclear football.” While Trump could have overruled the pilots, he said that would have been unusual.
Bolton noted that Trump the next day did make remarks commemorating the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice at another World War I cemetery just outside of Paris, the Suresnes American Cemetery — an event that had been previously scheduled. “Here on the revered grounds of Suresnes American Cemetery lie more than 1,500 U.S. service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War,” Trump said.
Anonymous sources
Beside the Atlantic, other news organizations reported that administration officials — provided anonymity to speak freely — said that Trump did not want to visit the cemetery.
Jennifer Griffin of Fox News: “Source: ‘The President was not in a good mood. Macron had said something that made him mad about American reliability and the need perhaps for a European army. He questioned why he had to go to two cemeteries. “Why do I have to do two”?’ ”
“When asked IF the President could have driven to the Aisne-Marne Cemetery, this former official said confidently: ‘The President drives a lot. The other world leaders drove to the cemeteries. He just didn't want to go.’”
Vanity Fair : “One Republican briefed on the internal discussions said the real reason Trump did not want to go was because there would be no tent to stand under. ‘He was worried his hair was going to get messed up in the rain,’ the source said.
The Bigger Picture
We may never settle on the precise reason Trump canceled his planned visit to Aisne-Marne American cemetery. But there are numerous examples of Trump suggesting that he thinks soldiers who were wounded or died in combat were losers. As part of his statement to CNN, Kelly referenced these anecdotes: “A person that thinks those who defend their country in uniform, or are shot down or seriously wounded in combat, or spend years being tortured as POWs are all ‘suckers’ because ‘there is nothing in it for them.’ A person that did not want to be seen in the presence of military amputees because ‘it doesn’t look good for me.’”
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.): During the 2016 presidential election, Trump derided McCain’s legacy as a war hero, saying of his years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, “ I like people who weren’t captured .”
The Washington Post reported that Trump complained bitterly to Kelly that he didn’t understand why Kelly and others in the military treated McCain, who had been tortured as a POW, with such reverence. “Isn’t he kind of a loser?” Trump asked, according to an unnamed official.
Gen. Mark A. Milley: Goldberg in 2023 reported that Milley, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had arranged for a severely wounded Army captain, Luis Avila, to sing at his welcome ceremony. “To Milley, and to four-star generals across the Army, Avila and his wife, Claudia, represented the heroism, sacrifice, and dignity of wounded soldiers. It had rained that day, and the ground was soft; at one point Avila’s wheelchair threatened to topple over. Milley’s wife, Hollyanne, ran to help Avila, as did Vice President Mike Pence. After Avila’s performance, Trump walked over to congratulate him, but then said to Milley, within earshot of several witnesses, ‘Why do you bring people like that here? No one wants to see that, the wounded.’ Never let Avila appear in public again, Trump told Milley.”
Veterans: Griffin reported , via an anonymous source, that Trump was puzzled why people went into military service: “What’s in it for them? They don’t make any money.” The official added: “It was a character flaw of the President. He could not understand why someone would die for their country, not worth it.”
