2022 Trek District commuter bike brings premium belt drive, dynamo hub model to U.S.

Already popular in Europe, Trek’s bringing their well-equipped District 4 commuter bicycle to North America for “serious” commuters who appreciate a low-maintenance, well-equipped, and fully-featured city bike.

Equipped with a clean, quiet Gates CDX Belt Drive, it needs no lube or grease and claims 3x the lifespan of a typical chain.

That feeds power into a Shimano Alfine 8-speed internally geared rear hub for easy shifting and a wide gear range. Shimano MT200 hydraulic brakes should be similarly problem free for years.

Up front, a Shimano 3-Watt dynamo hub powers premium Herrmans MR8 (180-lumen/60lux) front and H-trace Eco rear lights so you won’t ever need to add (or charge) batteries.

Fenders, a kickstand, and pre-installed rear rack come standard, too. Basically, it’s everything we’d want on a commuter bike, ready to roll straight out of the shop.

The frame is a lightweight aluminum that comes in standard and “Stagger” (step-thru) designs. It rolls on 700x40mm tires, with reflective sidewalls for safety, which should provide the right blend of comfort and speed. I’m not a big brand bike kind of guy, but I love the practical utility of this. It checks most of the boxes for a commuter, errand running, short jaunt kind of bike. Well done.

Hydro discs, gates belt drive, and a dynohub are definitely wins. Still not sold on the Shimano 8 speed internal hub’s durability.. I’ve just seen to many of them explode, but maybe they’ve improved in recent years.

Hmmmm “ they actually have inventory right now” seems wrong. I am seeing them having an ETA June 2022…. Might wanna check that source

I work at Trek, there actually is inventory. Warehouse gets them in mid-late July, which is much sooner that most other bikes

just get a Priority Continuum Its nearly identical but costs $430 less

I wish they had sprung for the alfine 11 spd. The 8 spd has some big jumps between the gears.

I never had problems with derailleurs,but recently got an Alfine 11 after being curious about it forever. It is everything I expected it to be. A big plus is the ability to shift from a stand-still. ..helpful when you are zipping along in high gear, but suddenly get stuck at an intersection and want to get going quicker. These bikes are ok. My style is more of a packback, rechargeable light, removeable fenders, etc,(to cut some weight), as opposed to generator hub/rack,etc. If you want a bike ‘loaded’ , these seem to check all the boxes.

Too bad this is basically identical to a priority continuum but $400 more expensive

I’ve been riding & loving the Priority Continuum Onyx for almost a year. Essentially the same as this (heavy and loaded) except it has continuously variable tranny hub instead of the 8 Alfine. Bulletproof BUT: It can only be operated by a grip shifter which I do not like (wrist action etc…) and cannot be adapted for triggers….. I may switch to the Trek District just to get the trigger shifters back….

Cannot agree more: I’ve been riding my Continuum Onyx trouble-free for over a year (5,000+ miles)…. & love it. But even after a year, I just cannot intuitively adapt to the twist shifter after 30+ years of rapid-fires….. I will likely get this Trek when it hits my local bike shop for that reason alone….

why would I ever buy this when I can get the nearly identical (it actually has better lights then the trek and a usb phone charging port) Priority Continuum Onyx for $430 less

The only thing more unusual than this bike’s name is how versatile it is. Hudski is a portmanteau of the last names of founders Will Hudson and Brian Szykowny, longtime friends who tackled the ultimate challenge of making a do-anything bike. Doggler is a term they use for an old friend, and this bike—available in builds for city, gravel, and mountain use—is exactly that

Though other bicycle brands have made strong urban-hybrid contenders, most are pavement-focused utility bikes. They can swing dirt surfaces in a pinch, but they favor low maintenance over broad terrain flexibility. The Doggler City is the opposite, a dirt-ready beast tamed for the streets.

The City model brings an eclectic off-road feature set to the urban environment at a competitive price. Part of Specialized’s long-running Sirrus lineup, the aluminum-framed X 4.0 is a competent, city-focused fitness bike that can handle any pavement or dirt track it encounters, with speed and grace.

The Sirrus is billed as a fitness bike, and that’s where it truly excels. While spartan accessory mounts sacrifice some utility, the Sirrus X 4.0 is strong on performance features like hydraulic disc brakes, multi-surface tires, and Specialized’s creative Future Shock stem suspension system.

You get quality components throughout, like an 11-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain, and internal cable routing one might expect on more expensive bikes. This trendy, quirky, retro-BMX-themed e-bike will put a smile on your face when cruising or commuting. Like the BMX bikes many of us had as kids, the Power Performer inspires you to do skids, stay out well after the streetlights come on, and look cool all at the same time. The Power Performer doesn’t completely make sense until you take it for a ride; then you hit the little thumb paddle for the throttle and suddenly it all clicks. A BMX bike with fenders, an aluminum frame, 29-inch wheels, a nine-speed drivetrain, and a peppy, 250-watt Bafang hub motor? These are a bunch of great tastes that are not supposed to go together. But somehow, GT combined all these disparate ideas to make a really special bike.

⚡ Cero |One $4,210 // 63.8 LB (One Size)

Maybe no type of bike benefits more from pedal-assist power than cargo. Traditional cargo bikes are unruly when loaded. But add a motor to the mix and they become the perfect tool for grocery-getting, hauling stuff, or carrying kids—exactly the kind of vehicle that can replace a car for some trips.

If you’re looking for a heavy-duty bike just for this purpose, the One has you covered. With the One’s max load rating of 77 pounds (but no more than 55 pounds on one rack), we routinely carried large amounts of gear using a combo of the front and rear baskets. An optional platform rack can be used for transporting large or irregularly shaped items.

The One’s feature set is optimized for commuting and utility. A Gates belt drive and five-speed internally geared hub are low maintenance and provide reliable performance. Integrated head- and taillights allow you to see, and be seen, while riding. Full-wrap fenders keep you clean of road spray. And the integrated Abus wheel lock is handy for quick errands and keeps anyone from easily riding off with the bike; we recommend a heavy-duty lock when leaving the bike anywhere for an extended period of time, or if locking it up out of sight.

The Shimano Steps E6100 motor has an intuitive feel, with pedal assist up to 20 mph. Motor settings can be controlled via the display screen or with a phone app, where you can also update firmware and adjust riding modes and max assist speed. For example, you can switch from Natural to Sportive mode for a little more torque when starting or on hills. We found this especially useful when hauling around heavier loads.

⚡ Aventon | Soltera $1,200 // 42.1 LB (Large)

Many commuter-style e-bikes have complicated features and designs that are impractical for many riders’ lifestyles. What excites us about the singlespeed Soltera is its simplicity and functionality. Aventon did away with derailleurs and disc brakes and skipped the suspension fork and fat-bike-size tires. This makes for a lighter e-bike that is easier to live with and maintain.

This simplicity, however, does not mean the Soltera is barebones or boring. At the heart of the bike are a 350-watt rear hub motor and a 10-amp-hour integrated battery. A thumb-controlled throttle helps you accelerate from a stop, or get some extra assistance up hills. The front light is bright enough to illuminate a bike path at night; the rear light is cleanly integrated into the frame and also functions as a brake light.

tokyobike | Bisou $825 // 27.7 LB (50CM)

Combining clean design aesthetics with practicality, the accessibly priced tokyobike Bisou is a great bike for getting around town. What sets the Bisou apart from other commuter bikes or townies on the market isn’t only its stately, classic appearance: toykobike uses 26-inch wheels across its range. The smaller-diameter hoops are handy for city riding; they get up to speed quickly from a stop and provide a nimble ride around potholes or illegally parked vehicles. The bike’s shorter wheelbase also makes the bike easier to carry upstairs or store in smaller apartments.

The Bisou’s step-through-style frame makes getting on or off the bike easier, especially when carrying anything in a basket or on a rack. The bike is available in six colors and three sizes and can be upgraded with numerous accessories when buying on the brand’s website.

⚡ Specialized | Turbo Vado 4.0 $4,000 // 57.5 LB (Large)

There are few feelings better than riding a bike where everything just feels “right.” That best describes everything about the Turbo Vado. From the motor to the computer head unit and phone app, to the aesthetic design, to the parts selection, to the ride quality, the Turbo Vado 4.0’s details have all been thoroughly thought through to perform as a seamless package. This is a rare quality from which anyone—a lifelong cyclist or the person getting their first e-bike—can benefit and enjoy.

Specialized is known for its ethos of continual R&D, but that focus is not limited to the brand’s competition bikes. On the Turbo Vado, it utilized those skills to make an elegant utility e-bike to carry you around town with aplomb and style.

The Turbo 2.0 motor delivers quick, seamless power to the pedals, with barely any perceivable pedal lag. Turbo Vado’s motor feels natural and intuitive, with just the slightest sound of motor “whir” to tell you you’re getting an assist, plus a whole lot of extra confidence that you’ll make it to work without getting too sweaty or easily climb that hill on the ride home.

When you have such a good motor and electronic interface on an e-bike, the other component parts that make up a bike can easily be overshadowed. Luckily, Specialized also did a great job on the Turbo Vado 4.0’s build kit, outfitting an e-bike where the parts all blend together functionally and aesthetically.

A SRAM NX 11-speed drivetrain and 11-42 tooth cassette give the Vado 4.0 a broad selection of gears to help get up longer or unexpectedly steep hills. Stopping duties are managed by SRAM Level hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors, which have plenty of power on hand and good modulation.

The SR Suntour Mobie A32 suspension fork performed much better than expected. Despite not having damping adjustments, it felt smooth and well-mannered over a variety of different-sized bumps regularly encountered riding around town. It also feels laterally stiff under heavy braking, a reassuring quality on a 57-pound e-bike with a 200-pound rider aboard.

Important commuter-friendly features are also well-thought-out on the Vado. The front and rear fenders are full metal, don’t rattle around over rough pavement, and do a sufficient job of keeping road spray off your body. Though not overly large, the sturdy rear rack carries up to 60 pounds and fits MIK-compatible accessories. Integrated front and rear lights are powered by the main battery and are bright enough to illuminate the bike lane at night.

At $4,000, the Turbo Vado 4.0 carries a higher price tag than many other commuter e-bikes. However, with that premium comes a more refined and integrated riding experience, superior brakes and drivetrain, a quality suspension fork, and a global dealer network, in the event your motor requires service.

Brooklyn Machine Works | Gangsta Track V.4 $975 frameset // 22 LB (Large)

Lots of bikes are built to get around city streets, but few do it with the basic simplicity of fixies. Just one gear, no brakes, no coasting. There are few better examples of the modern fixed-gear bike than the Brooklyn Machine Works Gangsta Track. The latest version of this classic bike features a chromoly frame and fork with updated geometry, removable brake bosses (in case you want to run it with brakes and a freewheel), and a headset. This special edition blue and high-viz color is an homage to the legendary Subaru World Rally racing team livery of the 1990s and early 2000s and is only available through King Kog in Brooklyn, New York. It uses a Gates CDX belt drive system that is far more durable than a standard chain, alongside being super quiet and low maintenance. All our bikes are fully built, checked, tuned and tested by our Cytech qualified mechanics and then securely packaged, ready for delivery. The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!

• - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
• - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
• - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
• - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef). 

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it. 

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it. 

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash. 

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb. 

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think? 

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade. 

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2. 

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....
