Trek expands Project One road program with more paint, bling, & choices!

The Project One program from Trek is their long-running custom program, allowing you to completely customize your dream bike. It has evolved over time, but recently received an update on the road side, with new models to customize, along with new ICON paint schemes and more component choices.

Trek Project One Road Custom Program 2019 Updates

Trek’s Project One has long been building high-dollar custom bikes to satisfy even the pickiest of customers. The MTB side saw a significant upgrade earlier this year, with the addition of new ICON paint schemes – but now it’s the roadies’ turn.

The road models available to customize include the new Domane SLR (above), Madone SLR/SLR Speed, Emonda SLR, and Speed Concept.

New component choices include R-Series road tires, Pro IsoCore VR-C and VR-S handlebars, Aeolus Pro 3 V wheels, and Aeolus sadles.

There are also two new ICON premium paint jobs in addition to the carryover options. Trek provided the descriptions below…

“NEW – Molten Marble brings the heat. With hypnotizing swirls of pearly red lava and smoky chrome, this paint scheme is a real force of nature. Available with or without Trek-Segafredo race team logos.”

“NEW – Cosmos is a paint scheme of galactic proportions. Take your ride from ordinary to otherworldly with three phases of color that fade from planetary purple to deep dark blue to the metallic black of deep space, all dotted with unique, hand-flecked constellations.”

“No two Brushed Liquid Metal paint schemes are alike. Beneath the glossy finish, the unique hand-scuffed undercoat has an industrial character with a deep, smoky tint.”

“Refliptive is a new twist on a coveted scheme of cycling’s past. Shades of amethyst and bright green flip to purple in changing light like a mood ring (if you’re always in a good mood). This scheme also features reflective logos.”

“Up close, the Black Gold paint scheme is as classy as a tuxedo. From a distance, the metallic flake and the raised dimensional logos give it a golden texture and depth.”

“Is every one of your rides a vision quest? Prismatic Pearl is a psychedelic, mind-bending paint scheme on a different plane of consciousness. It morphs in changing light to show every color and shade in the rainbow.”

The new Project One options are available as of July 25, 2019, with pricing adjusted based on the options you choose.

To boldy go if your wallet can take you…

Funny how cheap big box bikes so often much more visually appealing over the “Name Brand” bikes that can be $500-$5000 or more. I’m sure someone (likely a bike snob) will be along shortly to tell me “aesthetics shouldn’t matter” crap. To which I say fine, go put Huffy graphics on your $3-5K bike until it visually is a Huffy. Now tell me it shouldn’t matter….. When you make your expensive bike look like a cheap bike and ride it for years, you will have a leg to stand on then.

Aesthetics shouldn’t matter.

But they do.

Lets see your Huffy!

Gladly! They might also have a 7-11 logo as well and be built by Ben Serrota or John Slatwa or Eddy Merckx : )

I can’t tell what you’re on about but aesthetics definitely matter and for the most part people who get paid lots of money to do design have better designs and opinions than people on the internet.

They never include CX bikes in this program.

Likely that CX don’t sell enough to justify it.

Trek: “We added new options to our P1 road lineup!” Us: “Ok but can you add ‘cross, gravel, and more mountain bikes to the P1 system?” Trek: “Look! New colors!” Us: “Yeah but–” Trek: “And components!” Us: “If we could just have some diversity–” Trek: “ROAD BIKES”

That red reminds me of some early ’00s Ellsworth finishes. So many conflicting emotions.

is the size of the trek logo in the lead photo a joke?

Its their team design and it is optional (Available with or without Trek-Segafredo race team logos)

I realize that. But it’s still ridiculous regardless. Nobody was looking at last years bikes and saying “what is that”. The team TREK logo was always prominent. Now its comical. There is such a thing as overdoing it.

It’s too bad Project One doesn’t offer Campagnolo components.

1. Unless you have native heritage you shouldn’t be talking about “vision quests”. 2. I’m tired of people pretending that a semi custom paint job on a stock Geometry bike with limited component options is “custom”. For that amount of money you can get an actual custom bike: custom Geometry, any paint you want, any parts group you want. 3. Those trek logo sizes have gotten out of hand.

100% true facts

Strange that Project One doesn’t offer Shimano’s GRX components even as an option, given that the GRX groupset was specifically designed for all-road bikes like the Domane.

Then again, it wouldn’t be a Trek if the project team didn’t insist on making at least a couple of boneheaded design decisions.

Trek Project One Speed Concept

The Speed Concept has one clear focus, and the name is a bit of a giveaway. It's a bike for going fast against the clock, and this Project One paint scheme really shows off the profile of the supremely aerodynamic frameset.

Zipp 404s are a classic choice for mixed routes, cutting through the air with ease but untroubled by sidewinds. 2023 Ironman World Championship Nice Bike: Rudy Von Berg’s Custom Trek Speed Concept SLR

As the winner of this year’s Ironman Texas (and owner of the fastest bike split on the day), American Rudy Von Berg knows a thing or two about riding hard. On top of this year’s victory in Texas, Von Berg is a champion on one of the closest things we’ve got to a previous IMWC Nice with his win last year at Ironman France (where he also posted the fastest bike split of the day). It makes sense then, that Trek has outfitted Von Berg with a new, totally custom-painted Speed Concept for his second attempt in the French countryside. Von Berg’s XL-sized Speed Concept has fully custom, Nice World Championship colors that involved the use of actual smoke and fire during the paint process.

On the hills around Nice, Von Berg will be using 175mm cranks on a 54-41 chainring.

For power measurement, he’s chosen a SRAM Quarq power meter.

Von Berg will use a Sram Red AXS full wireless 12-speed drivetrain.

For his race-day gearing, Von Berg has chosen a 10-28 cassette.

Though he’ said he’ll likely use a disc rear wheel on race day in Nice, here his setup has a Cadex Ultra 65 front.

Von Berg will likely use a Cadex 65 or shallower on race day for his front wheel choice.

Von Berg has chosen a unique Wove V8 saddle for his race in Nice.

Additional hydration support sits behind Von Berg’s saddle with a Wove integrated rear saddle direct mount cage with integrated band to secure the bottle.

Trek has bold claims for its latest iteration of its Speed Concept platform. Not only is the Wisconsin-based brand boasting significantly improved aerodynamic efficiency, the bike is said to be more comfortable, more adaptable to different rider positions, and all while sporting a complete integrated storage and fuelling system.

Faster than ever

Trek is standing by the previous Speed Concept as still one of the fastest bikes in the world, but this update is claimed to have shaved off a hefty 16 watts over and above that model – when traveling at 26mph / 41.8kph, which equates to a Kona-winning pace.

The sheer size of the improvement is being chalked up to the expertise of the Trek Performance Research team's "multi-year quest of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) optimisation through the power of supercomputers."

But although the development of the Speed Concept's design heavily relied on CFD, the 16 watt saving was arrived at from repeated trips to the wind tunnel. "[The numbers] happen to agree with our CFD, but we always do the final validation in the tunnel" said Anders Ahlberg, Trek's Road Product Marketing Manager. 

"When we’re searching for the minute gains we are getting these days – since bike/rider aero interactions are so complex – any data or claims you’re seeing [on the Speed Concept] are bike and rider together. In fact, I don’t think we even tested a bare bike in the tunnel."

Comfort and fit

Trek's IsoSpeed technology has been around for quite a while now, with the idea being to add a extra portion of flex to improve rider comfort. 

For this latest iteration of the Speed Concept, the IsoSpeed pivot has been moved further forwards to better match the weight distribution of the rider when hunkered down over a set of aerobars.

The comfort boost of being able to take full advantage of the IsoSpeed system is claimed not only to improve improve your performance on the bike, but that the fatigue-fighting properties will also boost your run as well. 

To help dial in your perfect fit, Trek has expanded the range of adjustment, with most able to be made with one or two allen keys. To make travelling easier, Trek has designed the bars so that fit is preserved even when they're removed for packing into a bike box

Integrated storage and fuelling systems

Trek has poured a lot of effort into maximising the storage capacity of the new Speed Concept – while ensuring that none of it comes with an aerodynamic penalty.

From the top left going clockwise, the between-the-arms (BTA) bottle allows riders to hydrate without leaving the aerobars, thanks to the flexible straw. The capacity stands at 700ml, but it is refillable on the go with the integrated silicone port.

The Bento Box built into the top tube can store up to eight gels, is dishwasher safe and has two removeable internal dividers to help with organisation

The Aero Downtube Bottle is designed to match the Speed Concept's airflow, holds up to 750ml of liquid and can be used to top up the BTA bottle.

Underneath the Downtube Bottle, Trek has stashed its Flat Kit, which can hold a multi-tool, CO2 inflator head, tube and tyre lever, should you have any mechanical issues far from the feed zones.

Availability 

The Speed Concept is available exclusively through Project One, allowing athletes to customise their bike so the fit, paint and parts are all perfectly calibrated. The Speed Concept can be ordered on trekbikes.com in select markets and through Trek's global network of retail partners.

All models feature 12-speed gearing, hydraulic disc brakes, electronic shifting and mid-section Bontrager Aeolus Pro 51 tubeless ready wheels. The SRAM equipped builds all feature the brand's power meter crankset.

Since then, he’s earnt his 2ⁿᵈ cat racing licence in his first season racing as a third , completed the South Downs Double in under 20 hours and Everested in under 12 .

But his favourite rides are multiday bikepacking trips, with all the huge amount of cycling tech and long days spent exploring new roads and trails - as well as histories and cultures. Most recently, he’s spent two weeks riding from Budapest into the mountains of Slovakia .

Trek Get Super Snazzy with New Custom Options – Project One

Trek’s Project One program is a way to customise a Trek build with options of spec and paint. And they’ve just added a few amazing options into the mix we think they are pretty wild, perhaps too wild, or just the right amount of wild?

The official word from Trek’s press release here:

Trek announced a refresh of its Project One custom bike program today, introducing six new paint schemes and an all-new catalogue of premium spec and drive train options.

This expansion of the programme adds even more depth to Trek’s custom offering, giving riders everywhere more ways to create a custom bike they’ll love.

Three of the new paint schemes (Amplified Alchemy, Sweet Gold Leaf and Holographic Diamond Flake) are additions to the premium Project One ICON Series of bespoke designs filled with texture, depth and mood.

Two of the remaining new paint schemes (Abstract and Palmarès) are part of an all-new Designer Series, a personal collection that comes directly from designers on Trek’s Waterloo-based team.

Trek also added an all-new Splatter Fade paint scheme to the Project One mix, which pairs modern tech and classic throwback style. Splatter Fade is currently only available on Project One mountain bikes.

Additionally, Trek revamped its spec and drive train options to offer new SRAM Force eTap AXS on select road platforms, the all-new Aeolus RSL Bar/Stem on Émonda and Madone, new saddle options, and new Aeolus Elite, Pro and RSL wheels.

For Project One mountain bikes, Trek added all-new SRAM Eagle drive trains and new RockShox and FOX suspension on all platforms, along with new Line carbon wheel, saddle and tyre options.

Project One gives riders complete control over the design of their dream road, mountain or triathlon – and there are more options today than ever before.
