Kochi Water Metro: A Revolutionary Project for Urban Mobility

Kochi Water Metro: A Revolutionary Project for Urban Mobility

Kochi Water Metro is a pioneering integrated ferry transport project in the Greater Kochi region of Kerala, India. The project, proposed by Kochi Metro Rail Limited, aims to provide a fast, reliable, safe, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation for the residents of Kochi. Covering a distance of 76 kilometers, a fleet of 78 battery-operated electric hybrid boats operates across 38 terminals and 16 routes, connecting Kochi’s 10 island communities with the mainland. This innovative transportation system is the first of its kind in India and South Asia.

The Holistic Development of Kochi through Water Metro

The project, valued at 819 crores, is funded by the government of Kerala and the German funding agency KfW. Under the Indo-German Financial Cooperation, a long-term loan agreement of 85 million Euros (Indian Rupees 579 Crore) has been secured with KfW to finance a significant portion of the project. The Kochi Water Metro project is an innovative and sustainable mode of transportation that aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and promote eco-friendly means of transportation.

Kochi, often referred to as the commercial capital of Kerala, is a city that is blessed with a unique geographical advantage. Surrounded by backwaters and bordered by the Arabian Sea, it is no surprise that water transport is a viable and efficient option for commuting. Unfortunately, the existing water transport system has been neglected and outdated, leaving the citizens with low frequency, poor safety, and high pollution levels. But now, with the Kochi Water Metro project, the city’s urban mobility is set to undergo a revolutionary transformation.

Connecting Islands, Connecting Lives

This innovative initiative is aimed at providing a fast, reliable, safe, and eco-friendly water transport system to the citizens of Kochi. The project will connect 10 islands around the city with battery-operated electric hybrid boats that can carry up to 100 passengers each. With 38 modernized jetties, the project will be seamlessly integrated with other modes of public transport such as Kochi Metro, buses, and autorickshaws. By easing the difficulties faced by over 1 lakh islanders in accessing the mainland for education, employment, and healthcare, the project is poised to make a meaningful impact.

The Kochi Water Metro project is not just about transportation but also about holistic city development. It is expected to reduce traffic congestion and pollution levels in the city, which in turn will boost tourism and livelihood opportunities in the islands. Furthermore, it will provide employment opportunities for women and marginalized groups, thereby promoting social inclusion and gender equality.

Kochi Water Metro Fare & Route

Kochi Water Metro operates high-speed boats that can carry up to 100 passengers each. The service runs from 6 am to 10 pm every day, with a frequency of 10 minutes during peak hours and 20 minutes during off-peak hours. The fare ranges from Rs. 10 to Rs. 40 depending on the distance traveled. The route covers 16 terminals across 10 islands, including Vyttila, Kakkanad, Fort Kochi , Bolgatty, and Vypeen. Kochi Water Metro is a convenient and eco-friendly way to explore the scenic beauty and culture of Kochi.

The project has a low-fare structure and is touted to be eco-friendly, electrically propelled, and differently-abled friendly. It offers an affordable mode of travel through the picturesque backwaters of Kochi . There are 16 routes planned for Kochi Water Metro. The project will start with 8 boats operating on two routes: Highcourt-Vypin and Vytilla-Kakkanad. The ticket fare for these routes will be Rs 20 and Rs 30 respectively, and passengers can use the “ Kochi 1 ” card or book tickets digitally to travel in both Kochi Metro and Water Metro. Weekly, monthly, and quarterly passes are also available.

The Kochi Water Metro project is a unique and innovative example of how water transport can be leveraged to improve urban mobility and quality of life in cities that have waterways. It is a model that can be replicated in other cities in India and abroad that face similar challenges of urban congestion and pollution. With its launch, Kochi is set to become the first city in India with a boat service as a feeder to a metro network.

"Our focus is to encourage the island dwellers of Kochi to use Water Metro for their daily commutation. Though the tickets are priced between Rs 20 to Rs 40, regular passengers can make use of our trip passes and travel for charges as low as Rs 10," KMRL said in a statement.

Though new routes have been opened, the shortage of boats remains a concern for the company. Works on the terminals at Kumbalam, Paliyamthuruth, Willingdon Island, Kadamakudy and Mattanchery are progressing. Ahead of the completion of the works, the Cochin Shipyard has agreed to deliver five more boats to the KMRL.

No official celebration will be conducted on the first anniversary since the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections is in place. Music concerts will be held at terminals in a bid to attract more passengers. The concerts will be held at the High Court terminal on Thursday and on April 28, followed by a flash mob on April 29. Water Metro authorities will make arrangements for music troupes that wish to perform at the terminals.

Kochi metro’s trip passes have few takers, reveals RTI query

Why more and more Indian students are going abroad

Disconnect with commuters comes even as the metro is struggling to meet the daily target of one-lakh commuters

Student passes and other discount options in the Kochi metro are yet to find adequate takers among students and other commuters, a Right to Information (RTI) query has revealed.

This disconnect with commuters comes even as the metro is struggling to meet the daily target of one-lakh commuters. The trip passes with substantial discounts were announced during the past couple of years to woo commuters to the system of mass rapid transport, daily patronage of which hovered at approximately 70,000. It improved marginally to around 80,000 in the December-January festive-cum-peak-tourist season.

The average daily patronage is still less than a fourth of the estimated patronage mentioned in the metro’s detailed project report (DPR) readied by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). It had been attributed mainly due to inadequate last-mile feeder network and Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) being unable to communicate the discounted trip card options to commuters, said D.G. Suresh, an office-bearer of  Ernakulam District Residents Associations’ Apex Council (EDRAAC).

“It is not enough that KMRL announces an array of discounted trip cards. The agency must proactively reach out to commuters and inform them of the options. This is sadly missing, even as substantial space on metro pillars has been taken over by advertisements. EDRAAC had many times offered to help promote the metro, provided space was made available at metro stations,” he added.

Lizbeth Godwin, a researcher in urban mobility at the Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) and a regular metro commuter, echoed a similar view. “I use Kochi-1 transit card and also its app. But there are often problems associated with scanning the QR code in the app owing to glitches. This results in commuters having to pay in cash, which passengers, mainly youth who opt for digital payments, might not be having.”

The worst part is that most youngsters are unaware of trip card discounts and the QR code scanning options. KMRL must reach out to commuters, especially since it was struggling to attract commuters, while also incurring loss to the tune of ₹1 crore a day, she added.

Ebenser Chullikkat, who filed the RTI application in February to assess the patronage for trip cards, said smart card use was on the wane in the metro, with many commuters still using paper tickets. “Even worse, only 758 students in the entire Greater Kochi area availed the ₹900 student monthly pass in January, using which they could travel unlimited trips in the metro. This is because students generally need only to-and-fro trips, for which a lesser fare ought to be fixed. Similarly, the metro agency must give deep discount monthly pass to students from financially backward families.”

Only 2,532 of the ₹125 single-day passes, a pitiable five unlimited journey weekend passes worth ₹230, a total of 69 seven-day passes worth ₹550, and forty-eight 30-day passes worth ₹2,200 were issued in January. All this is in stark contrast with many other metros which offer deep discounts and lucky-dip gifts. KMRL must also introduce National Common Mobility Card, he said.

KMRL sources said the metro agency had begun an initiative to reach out to commuters by displaying details of discounted trip cards in stations and on a few pillars in the metro corridor. “They are also available on the website. We are also reaching out to schools and colleges so that the offers are posted on their notice boards. Similarly, EDRAAC office-bearers have agreed to share details in neighbourhood WhatsApp groups,” they added.

Kochi Water Metro on Vypeen-High Court, Kakkanad routes from April 26, 27

KOCHI: The much-awaited Kochi Water Metro will be officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 25 in Thiruvananthapuram through a video conference, in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Ahead of the launch, Pinarayi wrote on his social media post that the Water Metro, a dream project of the state, would accelerate the growth and development of Kochi. The metro will begin its commercial service on the High Court-Vypeen route on April 26 at 7am and on the second route, Vyttila-Kakkanad, on April 27 at 7am.

“With the launch of the flagship project set up for Rs 1,136.83 crore, one more assurance given to the people of the state by the LDF government is being fulfilled,” Pinarayi wrote in his Facebook post on Saturday. “The world-class Kochi Water Metro is setting sail. It is Kerala’s dream project, connecting 10 islands in and around the city. In the first phase of the state government and KfW (German funding agency)-funded project, High Court Junction-Vypeen and Vyttila-Kakkanad routes will be launched,” he wrote.

The cost-effective and secure journey in air-conditioned boats would help people reach their destinations without getting stuck in traffic. “It will take less than 20 minutes to reach Vypeen from the High Court terminal and 25 minutes to reach Kakkanad from the Vytilla terminal,” he said.

“The electric-hybrid boats being used for the service have already gained international attention. The terminals and boats of the metro are disabled-friendly. The floating pontoons that keep the boat at the same level during high and low tide are the speciality of the Water Metro,” he wrote.

Kochi Water Metro Ticket Price and Timings : Kochi is a large city in the Indian state of Kerala, often considered the “commercial capital” of the entire region. Historically, inland boat navigation on the Vembanadu Lake was the primary means of transport for both goods and people. Lack of investment and technology updates over the past few decades have led to the system’s downfall. When comparing water transport to land transport, water transport has higher energy efficiency. This project would help reduce pollution and traffic congestion in Kochi while providing residents of the city’s waterfront with easier access to business centers on the mainland.

The Kochi Water Metro is a system of ferry docks in the Greater Kochi area of Kerala, India, that operates as a single integrated transportation hub. The first of its type in India, this water metro is also the largest integrated water transit system in Asia. It links up with the Kochi Metro and serves as a critical feeder service for the riverside communities that lack convenient public transport.

About Kochi Water Metro Project

The Kochi water metro project aims to connect 10 islands along a route network of 78 km employing a fleet of 78 rapid, electrically-propelled hybrid boats serving 38 jetties. The water metro will bring convenience to more than a million island residents. The service is intended to do more than merely move people from one place to another; rather, it will also help local economies by investing in things like commercial real estate and tourism. As part of the Kochi Water Metro Project, new types of modern, energy-efficient, ecologically friendly, and safe boats with minimal wake and draught features will be introduced often.
