Medellín’s Cafes and Farms Are Taking Back Colombian Coffee

After decades of exporting the best coffee, Medellín’s local brands and cafe owners are turning residents on to the world-renowned specialty beans in their backyard and paying it forward to farmers

“En casa del herrero, azadón de palo.” In the blacksmith’s house, a wooden hoe.

This popular saying in Colombia (which mirrors sayings elsewhere like “the shoemaker’s child always goes barefoot”) references the way specialists often forget to share their gifts with their own communities. In Medellín, the capital of Colombia’s northwestern Antioquia region, it’s not blacksmiths but coffee growers and cafe owners who have ignored their neighbors. Though the country is known around the world for its smooth coffee, producers have long exported the best beans to foreign markets. The cheap coffee that remained for domestic consumption never reflected the area’s excellent reputation.

For generations, locals accepted this fate and stuck to basic filter coffee, often called tinto (red), likely referring to the reddish color of brewed Colombian coffee. But in less than a decade, a handful of entrepreneurs have given the city a cafe culture to match its famed farming practices, pushing the city into the world of third-wave cafes and contemporary brewing methods. Today, groups of young people can be seen enjoying pour overs, iced coffees, and cappuccinos in modern spaces lined with concrete and lush greenery.

A man sifts through coffee beans in a branded T-shirt and baseball cap.

Though they may look like cafes around the world, these businesses distinguish Medellín as one of the few cities where high-quality coffee is grown, harvested, roasted, and consumed. They’ve also helped reshape dynamics around the supply chain and the economic significance of Colombian coffee.

Coffee literally fills the slopes of Medellín’s hills. After the Jesuits brought the plant to Colombia in the 18th century , the industry became fundamental to the economic development of the Antioquia department, especially in the 20th century. Today, 114,000 hectares of Antioquia are planted with coffee, spread across more than 95,000 farms and tended to by over 76,000 coffee growers, according to La Federación Nacional de Cafeteros.

For much of Medellín’s coffee-growing history, plantation workers would typically roast beans in a pan, grind them, boil the coffee in an olleta (a traditional metal pot), sweeten it with panela, and strain it through a mesh cloth. You’ll still find ground filter coffee sweetened with panela at corner street stalls, offices, cafes, and corrientazos (restaurants that offer affordable meals or daily specials), where it’s usually served complimentary after a meal. At home, most people just use a filter machine out of convenience.

“We came to change [that] mindset,” says Nicolás Echavarría, one of the founders of Pergamino Café .

A server holds a tray of coffee.

The Echavarría family runs several coffee farms outside the city and works with farmers across Colombia. For decades, their primary business was exporting beans, but in 2012 they turned their attention to the local market with a cafe on Medellín’s Primavera Street. The family eventually expanded to eight locations across the city, training locals to become baristas. About 60 percent of their business still comes from exports, but they’re hoping to get to a 50-50 split with domestic sales.

“It’s about teaching customers to appreciate the different varieties of beans and preparation methods,” Nicolás says. The cafes have also redefined and expanded the audience for coffee; while the beverage was once associated with the working world of adults, Pergamino has managed to attract younger customers with items like cold brew and frappes.

The Echavarrías are especially focused on paying their producers well, partnering with groups like the Women’s Agricultural Association of the Cauca Department to offer fair rates (as well as training and knowledge about organic farming).

“Our goal is to put most of the money in the hands of coffee farmers,” says Pedro Miguel Echavarría, Nicolás’s brother. “As a family-owned company, we have to ensure the long-term sustainability of our business. If we do not ensure that our producers have a high and sustainable income, we will not have producers in the years to come.”

He points out that the average Colombian coffee farmer is getting older , and there’s little generational turnover. In a market that could shrink, higher pay could guarantee supply for the brand and its cafes, especially specialty beans from high-altitude areas.

A barista works behind a cafe counter surrounded by lush greens and a light-up sign reading “Barista en accion..”

Global coffee brands like Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts tout their ethical sourcing programs and social and ecological responsibility to coffee-growing communities, but international companies rarely have the same impact as a local operation.

“What actually reaches the [farmer] in terms of income is really very little,” Pedro Miguel says of these international programs. “A small and local company is more concerned with the immediate reality of the communities they work with, improving productivity and therefore life quality.”

Coffee’s role as a tool for social and economic change is especially powerful in a city like Medellín, where residents were directly affected by cocaine drug cartels in the ’80s and ’90s, deep economic inequality, and paramilitary violence in the surrounding countryside, which displaced many coffee farmers.

The coffee industry, the city, and this past are intertwined in the La Sierra neighborhood, for instance, an area formerly dominated by paramilitary groups that now counts people displaced by violence among its residents. When a sample of coffee from a farm there reached Cristian Raigosa, he was surprised by the quality, so he partnered with Joan Molina to found Rituales , a coffee roastery that works with 35 families from La Sierra.

“We highlight La Sierra because we were impressed by many things,” Raigosa says. “The fact that coffee is produced in the city. The quality of the coffee. And above all, the social conditions of the coffee farmers, who live in extreme poverty so close to the city. Their situation is more vulnerable than coffee farmers from much more distant areas.”

Along with a facility in the city where Raigosa and Molina go deep on fermentation and roasting, Rituales has a shop in the Laureles neighborhood , an area slowly becoming more gentrified — now known for tree-lined streets, fruit carts, cultural venues, and restaurants. The differences between La Sierra and Laureles are striking, but Rituales ties the neighborhoods together.

Two coffee pickers fill buckets in a plantation.

Then there’s Urbania , another coffee shop founded in 2016 by young entrepreneurs linking business to social and environmental causes. Along with farmers across the country, the cafe works directly with producers, victims of conflict, and ex-combatants in Antioquia. Along with earning B Corp Certification, the practices have allowed the company to expand to eight branches around Medellín.

“We felt that by doing these kinds of alliances, we were contributing to the peacebuilding mechanism of the country,” says co-owner Julián Gamboa. It’s paid off. The cafe’s Paz (Peace) line of coffees is a best seller.

“We saw that the model could be replicated for environmental impact projects,” Gamboa continues. “We started working with conservation NGOs that had contact with coffee growers, and now we are part of several efforts to help preserve forests, jaguars, and bears.”

Gamboa clarifies that none of this would be possible without a change in attitude among Medellin’s customers, as people start to appreciate their own specialty coffee.

“They are willing to pay more for better quality, and I think a new consumption culture has been created,” he says. He’s excited about the industry’s growth and points to the dozens of cafes sprouting up around Medellín. Some shops are even thinking about expanding to Bogotá.

And while V60 and Chemex pour overs are popular at the city’s newest establishments, there’s still room on the cafe table for a classic tinto — except maybe made with the best of Medellín’s coffee beans.

Welcome saving on a short break to Portugal

So simple and quick to use. I've just saved over £130 on a 2 night trip to Porto in May. That's a couple of good meals for sure! Many thanks

Date of experience : 04 March 2024

£££'s saved on first trip - very happy!

I'm so happy to have come across Ultimate Travel Club! I've saved hundreds on my first holiday (compared with booking with a travel agent) so have already made my membership fee back - and then some. I've even booked discounted cinema tickets through my membership too. I received my membership pack through the post and even received a 'welcome' phone call which was a lovely touch. Very happy so far!

Amazing value in Amsterdam

Booked a city break to Amsterdam and was amazed by the value of the 4* hotel. Especially as the city is well known for it's expensive accommodation the fact we were able to get a really nice hotel on the main road down from the central station was so unexpected. Couldn't recommend Ultimate Travel Club enough

Date of experience : 30 May 2022

Thanks for the review James - Really please to know you’re getting great value from your membership.

Brilliant Service

What a fantastic company. So very very helpful. Cheryl went way above and beyond any of my expectations to get me some extra information that I could not find out for myself. She sent me a lovely email with all the info on it and did this within about 2 hours of me asking. I will definitely be booking with the Ultimate Travel Club again

Thank you for taking the time to leave UTC such a lovely review. First class customer service is our priority. Our memberships team are on hand by phone or by webchat and can answer any question you might have so please get in touch again if there is anything else we can help with.

Not all is as it should be.

The company I work for offer a £40 discount on the yearly £99 membership fee, a quick search of 2 hotels for this Saturday showed a £20+ cost above Booking.com and a direct Hotel booking, think I will save my £59 a year for a better deal, I may have been unlucky but I'm not convinced this site can beat normal internet savings, thanks.

Date of experience : 01 September 2022

We are sorry to read of your disappointment in the 2 recent hotel searches. So far this year 91% of hotels have been cheaper when comparing against other major travel operators. We’re confident that our subscription model allows you to secure a wide selection of travel products at the lowest prices possible. Highly recommended! Saved hundred's of £'s...

Just booked a flight to Singapore and a five-star hotel with UTC. Prices are really very good - saved hundreds of £'s compared to the same itinerary on booking.com (I checked because I've always used booking.com in the past). And the flight and hotel booking process was very easy to navigate, Can't recommend UTC highly enough!

Date of experience : 17 August 2022

Thanks Michael! Sounds like you found one of UTC's best deals, with plenty more out there for the taking! Enjoy being part of our members only club and have a great holiday

Great so far, amazing hotel prices

I signed up to Ultimate Travel Club following a recommendation from a friend and so far am very pleased I did. With travel plans backed up since COVID lockdown, I wanted to book a couple of hotels (one in Venice this year, one in the Cyclades next summer) for 3/4 night stays as a family. Having done my research and chosen the hotels I wanted, I checked the official hotels' website prices and compared them to the same (hotel, room, date) combination on UTC. I was surprised to find UTC substantially cheaper: £250 less for the Venice stay and £200 less for Greece. Booking experience was good (I did one booking online and as I had questions, one over the phone). I've yet to use the other features like flight, transfers and days out bookings but the savings I've made on hotels alone makes me think it's well worth the membership fees.

Back in 2022 I embarked on a 10-day trek across Italy, and if there was one thing I knew I needed to pick up before the journey, it was the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag . At the time, the popular bag — the one you’ve likely seen all over the Internet — was sold out online as well as in most of the other stores across Manhattan, but the very morning of my flight I made a last ditch call to the location near my apartment and was met with nine thrilling words: “We just got them back in stock — but hurry.”

After traveling with my new bag through an airport in Norway on an unexpected layover, to the city streets of Rome, I knew that I would never go on another vacation without my belt bag — and two years later that remains to be true. Plus, right now you don’t have to search high and low for these bags like I did, because the $38 pack is currently fully in stock in 14 stunning colors on the Lululemon site, including new shades like the spring-ready Paradise Green.

This versatile bag is everything you could possibly need in a functional travel pack: At 7.5 inches by 2 inches by 5 inches and with a capacity of 1L, it’s spacious enough for my sunglasses, wallet, passport, keys, and phone, and is easily adjustable to fit across my body when wearing just a tank top and even when I'm tucked away in my winter coat. The primary pocket features mesh pouches on either side, which I usually pack my keys and a lip balm into, and an additional slim pocket on the back of the pouch is my favorite way to ensure my passport stays safe and protected.

Water-repellent nylon fabric makes this bag perfect for both rainy days and sweaty adventures, and unlike most bags with adjustable straps that leave one long piece left hanging, this pack is made with a thin piece of elastic that evens out the loop for a more streamlined appearance. It can even be worn as a traditional fanny pack (which I use for running outside), as well as across your body for easy access to your essentials while hurrying through the airport. Thanks to its functional and versatile design, the Everywhere Belt Bag made it onto our list of favorite fanny packs to take hiking .

Travel + Leisure / Merrell Readman

I can get overwhelmed if I have too much to carry while I’m traveling, and this bag has shown me the joys of a hands-free vacation experience. It made it much easier to get through TSA and boarding my flight because my passport was always just a short reach away, and even on outings in Florence and Rome, I was happy to not worry about my purse getting snatched off my shoulder if I were to let my guard down.

I’m not the only shopper that swears by this versatile fanny pack for travel now, and other Lululemon customers can’t help but rave about this sleek and functional bag. One shopper noted that they “travel a lot” and admitted that the bag is now “indispensable,” adding that it is the “perfect size with convenient compartments to keep well organized without the heavy bulk of a traditional purse.”

Another shopper raved that this pack is “nice if you’re traveling or just doing errands” because “if you have to pull your phone out or your wallet, [they’re] right there instead of digging through your purse to find whatever you need.”

It’s very rare that an item is actually worth the hype that it has garnered, but in this case the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag has earned every ounce of praise it has received. Not only can it fit a frankly impressive amount of essentials (I’m an overpacker), but it’s also comfortable to wear, sleek, and has quickly become one of the most-used bags in my collection.

Right now, the shopper-loved belt bag is available at Lululemon starting at $38, and is currently in stock in 14 stylish shades. Just don’t wait too long — it’s notorious for selling out quickly.

And if you're looking to elevate your travel style with other comfy and functional essentials, keep reading to find more must-have items to shop at Lululemon.

Solo travel: the 'ultimate indulgence in 2024'

Why more of us are choosing to go on holiday on our own

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

Woman in hotel room with suitcase

The number of holidaymakers choosing to go it alone is rising, whether in escorted groups, or independently. And it is an active choice, not forced by an inability to find a travelling companion.

"Rather than a function of necessity or compromise, holidaying alone has become the ultimate indulgence in 2024: a rare chance in this ultra-demanding world to put one's own needs and priorities first," said the London Evening Standard .

"Regardless of life stage or relationship status", many more people are taking solo trips, "not because they have to – but because they want to", said the newspaper.

And one factor fuelling the independent travel trend may be an after-effect of the pandemic's enforced isolation, which "emboldened" people with a 'now or never' attitude", rendering them "more confident than ever about spending time in solitude".

And that solitude can have benefits for our wellbeing. Research by Netta Weinstein, a professor of psychology and clinical language sciences at the University of Reading, has shown that there is a big difference between imposed solitude and chosen solitude, reported The Guardian .

"Having space gives us time to connect with ourselves, and connecting with ourselves benefits our wellbeing," said Weinstein. A key factor appears to be the sense of autonomy we get from being alone. "What we found was that, on any given day when people felt autonomous and competent in solitude, they feel better on that day," she added.

According to an Abta report, 16% of travellers went on holiday by themselves in the year to August 2023, compared to 11% during the previous year, said Travel Weekly . In the 35-44 age group, the proportion of solo travellers more than doubled to 13% in 2023 from just 6% in 2022.

The main attraction of a solo trip is being able to do what you want, when you want. Being on your own is a "chance to really savour the world around you – at your own pace", said Annabelle Thorpe in The Observer . There are "no compromises to be made, no itineraries discussed; get up when you want, eat what you fancy, do nothing or everything, talk to the friendly person next to you at breakfast, or pop in your headphones and ignore them completely".

And this freedom can bring a change in behaviour. "When I'm travelling alone, I become the best version of myself," said Thorpe: "the most decisive, the most charming, the most curious. I see more, go further, strike up conversations with people I'll never meet again, yet always remember."

And it's not just for single people. For those in a relationship, differing work patterns and destination preferences also play a part. "Like many women who travel alone, I have a partner, but his life is a lot less flexible than mine and he doesn't always want the kinds of breaks I do," said Joanna Moorhead in The Guardian.

Research by online travel agent Opodo.com in 2023 revealed that 41% of us prefer to travel alone, reported The Telegraph . "It puts us in control of decision-making", giving us the option "to linger for hours in a museum without our partners or children having a meltdown, or to undertake a lung-busting hike to the top of a mountain to be made small by nature when our close ones prefer the indoors".

And apart from the sightseeing, solo travel "gives us tranquil time for personal reflection and growth".

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * -- Wells Fargo’s latest and best travel card -- recently launched with an impressive set of features. Its competitive rewards, welcome bonus and redemption options take aim at incumbent travel credit cards from Chase, American Express and Capital One.

What gives Wells Fargo’s first foray into the point-transfer space an edge is that you don’t have to book travel in a portal to earn the highest rewards rates.

Here’s why we think the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey could go toe-to-toe with some of the best travel credit cards, plus three insider tips to help you decide if you should add it to your credit card lineup.

Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect with the Autograph Journey:

  • Earn 60,000 welcome bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in purchases within three months of account opening.
  • Earn unlimited 5x points on hotels, 4x points on airlines, 3x points on other travel and dining and 1x on other purchases.
  • Receive an annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Other benefits include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, roadside dispatch and cell phone insurance.
  • $95 annual fee.

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

3 key benefits cardholders get from the autograph journey .

Here’s a rundown of four facts we discovered about the Autograph Journey that you should know when deciding whether to apply.

1. You can transfer points with Wells Fargo point-based cards

The launch of the Autograph Journey also marks the first transferable points program from Wells Fargo, which joins other card issuers like Chase and Capital One, which have their own pooling programs .

Autograph Journey will be able to do a points transfer with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . This is especially notable since the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers bonus rewards in different categories than the Autograph Journey.

For example, the Autograph card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, plus 1x points on other purchases. So you can maximize your point earning across different categories, then transfer your points to your Autograph Journey account to access premium travel redemptions.

2. It offers more options for earning bonus miles on travel than some competitors

The Autograph Journey will offer more flexibility than many travel rewards cards when it comes to earning more points on travel purchases. For example, cardholders earn unlimited 5x points on hotels booked directly with hotel brands and 4x points on airfare booked with airlines.

This helps the card stand out from other popular travel credit cards that offer the most bonus points only if you book travel through their portals. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * only offer the highest bonus rewards on travel booked through Capital One Travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also offers its highest rate of 5x points on travel booked through Chase Travel℠, whereas other travel purchases earn 2x points.

Autograph Journey cardholders also earn a minimum of 3x points on other travel purchases, which could include rental cars, cruises and travel booked through online travel agencies like Expedia and Priceline.

3. The card may grow in value as more transfer partners join

The Autograph Journey Card will earn flexible travel rewards points that transfer to a selection of airline and hotel partners, similar to Amex Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards . While the list of transfer partners is limited, Wells Fargo stated in its initial press release that “more partners will continue to be added throughout the year.”

Points transfers could dramatically change the value proposition of the Autograph Journey, especially if new partners include domestic airlines and popular hotel loyalty programs.

Wells Fargo point transfers will be available to new cardholders starting on April 4. For now, Wells Fargo transfer partners include the following:

The influencer has been balancing her life as a full-time student at the University of Central Florida alongside her travel adventures. “This trip is already such an amazing experience,” she said, speaking to Elite Daily .

On a typical day at sea, Schwetje’s morning begins at 6, catching the sunrise from Deck 12 before her workout routine. Lunch is a treasured time spent with family and with friends who have become like a second family.

“A special moment we all shared was when we were in Rio for New Year’s Eve, and we got to experience ringing in 2024 together,” she recounted.

In the afternoons, the health sciences major, who aspires to be a travel nurse, finds a quiet spot to focus on her studies. Evenings are marked by themed dinners and Broadway-style shows in the theater, which are the highlights for Schwetje and her family.
