I use this every time I go to London

This app is invaluable! I travel alone & am American , even tho this summer will be my 4th UK trip I am not comfortable going around London without a map ! . My first trip( 2016 ) it took me about 30 min every am & night to plan my journey etc ! I still got lost and my phone battery would die from constant use. This app allows you to find the tube line you need and w a spare battery you should be fine alone! I’m 60 and stay in Victoria area ( my fav) buy need no help now largely bc of this great app!

When an app feels this good

As a tourist in London finding this app was amazing, but it goes beyond usability and into art. This app is such a great example of thoughtful and precise design. I’ve kept it on my phone after leaving London just to continue to fiddle around with it and continue to discover additional layers of loveliness.

Simple, clean, functional

Fantastic job by the dev team, one of the easiest travel apps I’ve ever used. Displays the map very clearly, shows you everything you want to see. Perfect

London Public Transport Journey Planners

These are the best apps and tools to plan a journey by public transport in London. We recommend using the options listed below instead of Google to plan a journey.

Citymapper is the most comprehensive public transport planning app for London.

It’s available online or as a free app for ios or android . The online version is now rather limited. The app is much better.

The route planner shows all transport options including cycling, walking and local trains.

The adult Pay as you go Oyster card/contactless fares for each journey are also shown. This make it easy to find the cheapest route.

Transport for London’s TfL Go app is a sleek design and easy to use . It’s the easiest app to find and live departures for underground trains and buses.

It also has a route planner showing options for

  • fastest route
  • an alternative route (usually bus)

Select ‘Status’ for delay information. You are then able to see if there are any problems on a particular train or underground line.

It defaults to an excellent live tube map, which finds your closest tube station. Click on the underground station, then the name of the station to get the times of the next tube trains.

Click on ‘bus stops’ to see times of the next buses from bus stops near you.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t give fare information. But it’s recommended if you don’t need to know the fare.

Transport for London’s online journey planner

Transport for London’s online Journey Planner shows the quickest way from A to B.

It’s possible to choose bus/tube/train only routes. It also gives you the Pay as you go Oyster peak/contactless and off-peak fares.

Do bear in mind that the default is the quickest route, which is not always the cheapest. For example, to Heathrow Airport:

  • under ‘Edit preferences’ deselect ‘National Rail’ to exclude the expensive Heathrow Express train.
  • Deselect ‘Elizabeth line’ if you want to exclude that as well.

Early morning or late-night journeys

To be somewhere at a specific time, especially if it’s in the morning or late at night, use the TfL Journey Planner

Mobility issues

If you have mobility issues, you can narrow down your search options to find the best route with:

  • Escalators but not stairs
  • Stairs but not escalators
  • Step-free access to platforms
  • Full step-free access

If you just need a tube map and don’t want to use an app, download a pdf tube map to your device.

Wunderground Road Trip Maps The Weather Throughout Your Route [US Only]

<firstimage="https://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/wundergroundmap-icon.png">

Get your directions, with information about the weather on your route. That's Wunderground's excellent Road Trip tool, which shows the temperature of the places you're going at the times you're going to be there, as well as any extreme weather you might want to be aware of. You can even print it all out!

If you're about to take a road trip, you're probably about to fire up Google Maps . That makes sense; the service is just about the best there is when it comes to quickly finding directions, no small part of the reason it's the default map program on the iPhone.

But good as Google Maps is, it doesn't do everything. Or, at least, it doesn't do everything on its own. There are numerous awesome and useful Google Maps mashups out there that do just about anything you can imagine. So it should come as no surprise that the best weather site on the web offers a Maps mashup of it's own. This is particularly useful in the winter months, when heavy snowfall can make driving dangerous or impede progress.

There's only one catch: the application is currently US-only, which made it slightly less useful during my recent drive from Colorado to Ontario. Still, the idea is solid enough that it's worth knowing about if you ever think you'll be in the States.

Getting Started

Head over to the Wunderground's roadtrip page [Broken URL Removed] to get started. You can enter the various co-ordinates in your trip, as well as the time and date you intend to leave.

Once you've entered your co-ordinates and times, you'll see a map outlining your route. This isn't that different from your standard Google Map, and even includes the standard turn-by-turn directions. The main difference is that the map also includes weather, showing the temperature and conditions along your route.

Other Features

There's more to this, though. Checkboxes below the input dialogue allow you to display severe weather on your map, and even to highlight areas of heavy traffic. While the traffic is obviously a lot harder to predict than the weather, it's a great tool to check how conditions are right now.

The severe weather display, on the other hand, is extremely useful if you plan on taking a long trip. Snow storms in Minnesota, for example, probably mean that stopping outside that state rather than driving all night is a good idea.

You can also print your entire route, in a manner similar to Google Maps but with road trip weather information. Nice.

Similar Services

There are other services like this out there, of course. The Weather Channel offers the interstate forecast, which focuses on America's main routes. WeatherBonk also offers a route weather tool , though I personally find it a great deal less useful than Wunderground's offering.  I've yet to find a tool like this that works outside of the United States, but am very open to suggestions.

Please let me know about any and all similar services in the comments below, because sharing is awesome and so are you.

3 New Hotels To Build A Trip Around In 2024 From Hawaii To Paris

Released on 04/24/2024

[Narrator] Every year, Conde Nast Traveler

releases its annual hot list,

which celebrates the best hotel openings and more

from around the world.

Here, a chic new addition to New York's NoMad District,

a reimagined and lovingly restored Hawaiian retreat,

and Paris's most exclusive new address are just three

of the standout properties on this year's hot list.

New York's NoMad neighborhood

has been an epicenter of cool new hotels

for over a decade now.

You know, the kind of places

that actually make the hotels the destination.

But we'd say none of the others here

nails the mix of high design, phenomenal food,

and just plain fun like The Fifth Avenue Hotel.

Immediately, you'll notice the design.

It's a whimsical riot of color and curiosities

from the mind of design master Martin Brudnizki.

Here he takes his cues from the building's Gilded Age roots,

but also the travels of the hotel's owner.

All of the design layers fit together,

and honestly, staying here kind of feels like

entering the wildly designed pied-a-terre

of some wealthy distant globe-trotting relative.

Though we're happy to say,

for all the hotel's originality,

they kept the most important, most classic detail.

Bathrooms come with the deepest sinking tub

for an unmissable post shopping soak.

Oh, and two words, martini cart.

If you allow yourself just one indulgence here,

it has to be the happy hour martini cart

they wheel up to your room,

with the most perfectly poured cocktails,

with all the accoutrements.

It's bliss.

But word of advice,

that should not be in place of the downstairs Portrait Bar,

a moody sexy cocktail lounge that fills up fast

by the trendiest of New Yorkers.

For a complete change of scene,

the legacy lives on on Hawaii's big island,

where the Rosewood Group of Hotels & Resorts

has revived the beloved Kona Village with a fresh twist.

From the 150 hale or bungalows,

to the resort's own outrigger canoe,

which guests can take out for sunrise paddles,

the village pulls in its destination at every opportunity.

Though the historic grounds, black sand beaches

and acres of pools makes it easy to spend all day outdoors,

you definitely will not want to skip at least an afternoon

at the spa Asaya.

It's built right into the lava flow,

and you can actually see Hualalai Volcano

off in the distance.

That breezy indoor/outdoor design carries over

to the rooms too,

where San Francisco based Nicole Hollis

nimbly avoids the easy design tropes of Hawaiian kitsch

by going big on texture.

The bathrooms are ginormous,

with al fresco showers

and loads of stone and black to mirror the lava fields

and black sand beaches visible from the lanai

where you'll wanna park yourself

for long stints in the morning over coffee and after dusk,

staring up at the stars.

The resort has some solid restaurants,

but honestly, there may not be a more perfect vacation bar

anywhere in the world than Shipwreck,

built of an actual old boat

that was owned by the resort's original founder.

The drinks are a lot of fun and honestly fantastic.

Important to note too,

is the resort's dedication to sustainability,

working with cultural advisors on how to preserve

and protect cultural sites at the hotel,

like it's petroglyph field.

It all combines to a resort

that can feel like a perfect homage

to the land's culture and environment,

along the most memorable and tranquil black sand beaches.

And then there's the supremely elegant 1, Place Vendome,

which is hard to miss right above the Chopard Boutique

in Paris's first arrondissement.

They do things a little differently here.

There is no check-in in the lobby,

but what you will find is signature Parisian glamour,

with an exquisite stone staircase.

Staying here feels like you've foregone a standard hotel

in favor of your own private member's club,

which in a way it is.

No non guests are allowed through these hallowed doors.

There are just five rooms and 10 suites

in the entire property,

all of which have been masterfully created

by famed interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon.

Each has its own personality and aesthetic point of view.

Some are done in stark whites and cobalt blues,

others have pop art style curvaceous chairs,

mosaic showers and embroidered wallpaper.

This singular approach to design helps remind us

that this is a more personalized approach

to what a hotel can be.

And then there's the cuisine,

masterfully prepared

by luxury hospitality vet Boris Algarra.

From the high tech kitchen,

he and his team craft dishes

as beautiful as the setting itself,

including a 24/7 breakfast menu

that are plated so beautifully

you kind of don't wanna ruin it

by taking that first bite.

Also, there may be nothing more luxurious

than settling into the property's gigantic hug-like sofas

with the most perfect coffee or tea,

or upgrading that to a glass of red

from the owner's own vineyard.

A top hotel draws in the best of food, design and comfort

to become a destination all their own.

Any hotel that you choose will guarantee a great vacation.

And for more information on all these hotels,

including what to pack, head to cntraveler.com.

These hot list tours are brought to you by Capital One.
