12 Unforgettable Tourist Places to Visit in Uttarakhand

What to See and Do in the Land of Natural Beauty

uttarakhand tourism and care

Uttarakhand, bordered by Nepal and Tibet, and shadowed by towering Himalayan peaks, is full of unspoiled natural beauty. It's divided into two regions—Garhwal in the north, and Kumaon in the south. Ancient holy places, mountains, forests and valleys, and an abundance of trekking options are some of the attractions that make travel to Uttarakhand worthwhile. Check out these top tourist places in Uttarakhand for inspiration.

Uttarakhand is also an excellent place to get off the beaten track. If you're looking for fresh air and tranquility, you'll love some of these boutique Himalayan getaways .

Jim Corbett National Park

One of India's most popular national parks , Jim Corbett National Park is named after hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett. It has dense forest and an array of wildlife, although tiger sightings aren't as common as some other places in India. The park can be explored by jeep or elephant safaris, which take place daily in the early mornings and afternoons. The Dhikala zone of the park is the most panoramic, with stunning valley views. It offers the best chance of animal sightings (which are unfortunately sometimes disappointing). If you're lucky, you might spot wild elephants.

  • Location: About five hours drive northeast of Delhi.
  • Check Out Current Corbett Hotel Deals on Tripadvisor and Save

Ancient Haridwar (the "Gateway to God") is one of the seven holiest places in India, and one of the oldest living cities. Located at the foothills of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, it's particularly popular with Hindu pilgrims who come to take a dip in the holy waters of the fast flowing Ganges River and wash away their sins. The evening Ganga Aarti holds a special appeal.

Rishikesh, located not far from Haridwar, is as popular with western spiritual seekers as Haridwar is with Hindu pilgrims. Known as the birthplace of yoga, people flock there to meditate, do yoga, and learn about other aspects of Hinduism in the various ashrams and yoga institutes. Despite the growing number of visitors, the town's lanes and alleys retain an old-world charm. It remains a wonderful place to relax and unwind among nature.

  • Location: 40 minutes drive northeast of Haridwar.

The hill settlement of Nainital, in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, was a popular summer retreat for the British during the time they ruled India. It features emerald colored Nainital (Naini) Lake and an action-filled strip called The Mall, lined with restaurants, shops, hotels, and markets. Enjoy one of the many forest walks, explore the surrounding area on horseback, or relax on a boat in the lake. This destination gets very crowded during summers, especially on weekends, due to its proximity to Delhi. Around Nainital, you'll find Jeolikote, Bhimtal, Ramgarh and Mukteshwar which are all less developed and quieter places to stay.

  • Location: About 6.5 hours drive east of Delhi.
  • Check Out Current Nainital Hotel Deals on Tripadvisor and Save

Mussoorie is another popular weekend destination for north Indians, as well as honeymooners. One of the main reasons for this is because it has a lot of facilities developed especially for tourists. Take a cable car to Gun Hill, enjoy a beautiful nature walk along Camel's Back Road, have a picnic at Kempty Falls, or ride a horse up to Lal Tibba (the highest peak in Mussoorie). Mussoorie also offers a superb view of the Himalayas. If you're looking for a quieter alternative nearby, check out Landour.

  • Location: About six hours drive north of Delhi and an hour from Dehradun (Uttarakhand's capital). IRCTC offers a convenient two-night weekend rail tour package from Delhi to Mussoorie.
  • Check Out Current Mussoorie Hotel Deals on Tripadvisor and Save

Almora, now the capital of the Kumaon region, was established as the summer capital of Chand kings in 1560. It attracts its share of foreigners who head to nearby Kasar Devi Temple, where Swami Vivekananda meditated. There are some chilled out places to stay in the area, such as Kasar Rainbow Resort and Mohan's Binsar Retreat,  as well as inexpensive guesthouses with private cottages just outside Almora town. Around Almora, you'll find the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kausani (where Gandhi spent time writing his  Bhagavad Gita  treatise), Ranikhet and the Jageshwar temple complex.

  • Location: About nine hours drive northeast of Delhi.

Valley of Flowers National Park

The remarkable landscape of The Valley of Flowers National Park in the Garhwal region comes alive with the monsoon rain. This high-altitude Himalayan valley has around 300 different varieties of alpine flowers, which appear as a bright carpet of color against a mountainous snow-capped background. It's a popular trekking destination, open from the start of June until the end of October.

  • Location: About 15 hours drive northeast of Delhi, plus a trek.

Located high up in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, the Char Dham (four temples) mark the spiritual source of four holy rivers: the Yamuna (at Yamunotri), the Ganges (at Gangotri), the Mandakini (at Kedarnath), and the Alaknanda (at Badrinath ). Hindus consider a pilgrimage to the Char Dham to be very auspicious. Not only is it believed to wash away all sins, but it will also ensure release from the cycle of birth and death.

Uttarakhand even has a skiing destination! Auli lies on the way to Badrinath and has a three-kilometer long slope, gondola, chairlift, and Poma ski lift. For skiing, conditions are best from the last week of January to the first week of March. However, it's dependent on good snowfall, which is variable. If you're into trekking, the Kuari Pass trailhead is at Auli. This trek, which passes through Nanda Devi National Park, is one of the state's best and most accessible. Thrillophilia offers six-day guided trips from Haridwar . There are many other hiking trails around too.

Accommodation options in Auli are scarce but Devi Darshan Lodge is recommended if you don't stay at the popular government-run Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Hotel (which offers ski programs). Alternatively, the Himalayan Abode Homestay near Joshimath is excellent, and the host is a skiing and snowboarding champion and coach. Another good option is Himalayan Eco Lodge .

  • Location: About 13 hours drive northeast of Delhi, near Joshimath.

Magical Munsiyari, a small town surrounded by towering mountains in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, is paradise for mountaineers and trekkers. Blazing sunsets create a stunning backdrop of color-stained peaks there. However, the hiking and trekking routes are the biggest draws. Munsiyari is the base for the challenging nine-day Milam Glacier Trek , and the much easier two- to three-hour trek to Khalia Top is another attraction. The Tribal Heritage Museum, filled with artifacts from Munsiyari's trade with Tibet on the ancient salt route, is also worth seeing. Milam Inn , albeit basic, is the best place to stay in Munsiyari and it offers fabulous mountain views from the guest rooms.

  • Location: About 16 hours drive northeast of Delhi.

Not to be confused with the Chopta Valley in Sikkim, Chopta lies between Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, at the entry to Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. It attracts travelers who want to enjoy the great outdoors away from the crowds and development. Chopta is the starting point for treks to Tungnath temple (open from June to September) and Chandrashila summit. It's a short, yet scenic, moderate trek that can be completed in a day. Notably, the temple is the world's highest Shiva temple. Thrillophilia offers four-day guided trips from Haridwar.

  • Location: About 10 hours drive northeast of Delhi, via Rishikesh.

It's likely that you've never heard of Kalap, a tiny remote village that's only accessible by foot, 7,500 feet above sea level in the upper Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. That's because it's totally off the tourist map. A responsible tourism project was established there in 2013 to help improve the livelihoods of the villagers. Kalap is an outstanding place to get away from it all and experience the simplicity of village life or go trekking along trails followed by nomadic shepherds.

  • Location: About six hours north of Dehradun in Uttarakhand.

Soaring ambitions: Ropeway firms swing to action to transform travel, tourism

A ₹1.25 trillion plan is set to elevate india’s tourism and urban transit, as ropeway companies gear up to revolutionize connectivity across scenic and urban landscapes.

Skyview Gondola Gateway to Patnitop in the union territory of J&K

NEW DELHI : If you've taken a ride on a ropeway anywhere in India, such as, say, in snow-clad Gulmarg (Kashmir) in January, you will know the exhilaration that comes from it. Apart from delivering that stimulus to tourism, ropeways also provide an added mobility option in a region.

More ropeways could find their way into your intinerary soon, as a plan from the Centre to step up their presence finds rising acceptance from operators. Companies like Usha Breco and Skyview by Empyrean, among others, are coming up swinging with plans to build more ropeways across the country.

This January, roads and highways minister Nitin Gadkari had announced plans to develop more than 200 ropeway projects valued at ₹ 1.25 trillion over the next five years. This idea is to revolutionize travel and tourism, particularly in mountainous regions.

The minister had emphasized the benefits of reducing project costs and fostering public private partnerships (PPP) as catalysts for a proliferation of such projects.

Companies, projects and plans

Among the early adopters of this initiative is Delhi NCR-headquartered Usha Breco. Established in 1969 with its first passenger ropeway at Maa Mansa Devi in Haridwar, the company is currently evaluating four projects that could significantly expand its operational scope.

With its existing projects spread across Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Odisha and Assam, Usha Breco is actively seeking to extend its footprint using the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model in partnership with the government.

Currently, it operates nine ropeways under the ‘Udan Khatola’ brand in places like Jatayupura and Malampuzha in Kerala, Girnar in Junagarh, Haridwar and Odisha.

Manoj Panwar, president of operations at Usha Breco, said that increasing domestic travel demand has elevated the role of ropeways at key tourist destinations.

Also Read: From Baku to Batumi, Indian traveller hits the unexplored trail

Advancements in technology have simplified access to mountainous and remote areas via ropeways, making them crucial for urban and tourist transportation, Panwar said.

In recent years, the company has invested more than ₹ 200 crore to develop ropeways at places like Jatayupara in Kerala and Girnar in Gujarat. A recent memorandum of understanding with the Uttarakhand government involves a ₹ 1,000-crore investment to initiate new projects, he added.

The company plans to spend about ₹ 25 crore annually over the next three years on maintenance and repair of existing facilities, funded through internal accruals.

A November 2023 report by CARE Edge Ratings highlighted Usha Breco's strategy to boost its operational income above ₹ 250 crore while maintaining robust profit margins, facilitated by the addition of new ropeway projects.

Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, proposals for five new ropeway projects by private entrepreneurs are reportedly expected to receive approval soon. These projects, including an 8-km long urban mobility ropeway from Sewri in Mumbai to Raigarh’s Elephanta island, are set to enhance local transportation solutions.

Skyview by Empyrean , another key player in the hospitality and ropeway sector, is considering a project to overhaul the ski facilities in Uttarakhand's Auli region. Originally built in the 1970s, the existing ropeway and ski facilities in Auli are due for an upgrade.

The state government has proposed building a new ropeway and significantly improving the existing ski infrastructure, the company's managing director Syed Junaid Altaf told Mint, adding that the company has a comprehensive redevelopment plan for Auli.

“We are actively evaluating three to four projects under the government's PPP…We are also evaluating more ropeways in Jammu & Kashmir and the North East states," he said.

The company's existing ropeway at Patnitop in Jammu and Kashmir is not just a transport solution but is being developed into a comprehensive tourist destination. The company has earmarked ₹ 25 crore to increase its hotel rooms from the existing 15 to 100 in the next three years.

"We get 100,000 tourists annually on this ropeway…the highway between Jammu and Srinagar…(will be complete) in the next 18 months. That will help increase tourism to the union territory and most of the tourism infrastructure in this area should benefit from that," he added.

Srinagar-headquartered FIL Industries, the parent company of Skyview that was launched in 2014, collaborates closely with the government on revenue-sharing models and enhances regional tourism by integrating hotels, entertainment, and retail spaces with their ropeway projects.

Currently, FIL is investing over ₹ 500 crore in building ropeway systems in Mussoorie and Yamunotri through a consortium arrangement.

Also Read: Scent of growth for Indian hotels as the good times check in

Additionally, FIL is set to expand its Dehradun-Mussoorie ropeway project by adding hotel rooms, with the ropeway construction budgeted at ₹ 300-350 crore and an additional ₹ 100 crore planned for hotel development in the subsequent phase. Operations are scheduled to start in 2026, and the company also plans to develop a dining complex on a four-acre site at the valley's summit.

Ropeways and infrastructure

India's ropeway industry, although small with only a few full-time companies like Usha Breco and Damodar Ropeways & Infra Ltd (DRIL), plays a crucial role in the infrastructure landscape, often partnering with road construction firms under the hybrid annuity model (HAM) for implementing highway projects.

In January, Gadkari had underlined the government's commitment to supporting ropeway development with 60% construction funding under the HAM, which is higher than the support extended for national highways, to attract more private investment.

In a HAM project, private players construct the project and have no role to play in the ownership and toll collection, while the government releases a part of the project cost to them. Sometimes private players go with the BOT model and sometimes they just do the engineering, procurement and construction.

Ropeways offer a viable and economical alternative to traditional public transport systems, especially in less populous cities where large-scale metro systems are not feasible, Altaf said.

With capacities ranging from 3,000-4,500 people per direction per hour, ropeways can significantly enhance urban mobility in tier-II and tier-III cities, he added.

  • Foreign tourist arrivals in India will cross pre-pandemic level in 2024

Recent tourism data indicates an annual growth of 305.4 per cent in foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in 2023. In 2023, 9.23 million foreign tourists visited India. Although the FTAs arrival number is still less than the pre-pandemic number of 10.93 million in 2019, experts believe in 2024 we might cross the FTAs arrival number of pre-pandemic days.

Uttarakhand starts work to make Dehradun international airport starting with Kathmandu flights

While post covid domestic travel has staged new highs, international inbound is yet to recover fully. Foreign tourist arrivals (FTA) in 2019 were about 1.1 crore. In 2022 that figure was 62 lakh and last year it rose to 92.4 lakh. The industry is deliberating how to get FTAs not just back to 2019 levels but exceed the same. Increased direct international connectivity; more new tourism circuits and ease of visas have been the steps suggested by the industry to improve India’s FTAs.

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — The World Bank has suspended funding for a tourism project in Tanzania that caused the suffering of tens of thousands of villagers, according to a U.S.-based rights group that has long urged the global lender to take such action.

The World Bank’s decision to suspend the $150 million project, which aims to improve the management of natural resources and tourism assets in a remote part of southern Tanzanian, was “long overdue,” the Oakland Institute said in a statement Tuesday, charging that the bank’s “failure to take immediate action resulted in serious harms for the local communities.”

At least $100 million has already been disbursed for the project, which started in 2017. The suspension of World Bank financing took effect April 18.

The Oakland Institute, a California-based rights watchdog whose work focuses on marginalized communities, for years led calls for the World Bank to stop funding the project known by the acronym REGROW, documenting serious rights abuses suffered by Indigenous communities in the area.

The group in a report released in November accused the World Bank of failing to hold Tanzanian authorities accountable for extrajudicial killings and sexual assaults relating to the expansion of Ruaha National Park.

The report said the Tanzanian government’s tactics to force communities away and increase tourism in Ruaha National Park, a goal of the REGROW project, were “inextricably tied to its financing by the World Bank.”

The World Bank said at the time that it “has zero tolerance for violence in the projects it finances,” adding that a panel of inspectors was reviewing a complaint related to REGROW “to determine whether a compliance audit into the concerns raised is warranted.”

In recent correspondence between the World Bank and the Oakland Institute seen by The Associated Press, the lender confirmed the suspension of further disbursements to REGROW “until we are confident that the project is upholding our environmental and social standards.”

Anuradha Mittal, executive director of the Oakland Institute, said the World Bank’s decision to suspend funding for “a dangerous project” is a victory for marginalized communities in the East African country.

“It sends a resounding message to the Tanzanian government that there are consequences for its rampant rights abuses taking place across the country to boost tourism,” Mittal said. “The days of impunity are finally coming to an end.”

It was not immediately possible to obtain a comment from Tanzanian authorities.

The Oakland Institute documented at least 12 disappearances or extrajudicial killings allegedly carried out by rangers, in addition to multiple sexual assaults of women. Government agencies allegedly seized and auctioned large numbers of cattle, imposing a heavy financial strain aimed at pressuring herders to leave.

“During the first months of 2024, rangers illegally seized and auctioned off thousands of cattle from herders while preventing farmers from cultivating their land -– devastating countless livelihoods as a result,” it said in its statement Tuesday.

Tanzania relies heavily on tourism to finance its budget, and the country has long been trying to develop its extensive national parks to attract more visitors.

Tens of thousands of communities in other parts of Tanzania have been caught up in the efforts, putting local authorities under the spotlight over civilian abuses. These efforts, cited by Amnesty International and others, include the violent eviction of 70,000 Maasai from grazing lands in the Loliondo area to clear vast tracts of land for trophy hunting.
