The Ultimate Driving Guide to Valley of Fire State Park

Valley of Fire State Park: The Ultimate Driving Guide

Valley of Fire State Park is a place that you must visit at least once in your life. It is world-renowned for its gorgeous landscape of bright red sandstone outcrops, winding scenic roads, colorful pastel canyons and much more. Depends on what you want to do, you can spend from half a day to a weekend or more here. If you only have a few hours to spend, we put together this ultimate driving guide that will show you the cool places that don’t require a lot of hiking or walking.

Valley of Fire State Park: The Ultimate Driving Guide map

Coordinates: 36°24’47.5″N 114°32’53.5″W

Beehives are the first thing you’ll come across if you enter Valley of Fire State Parl from U.S. Route 15. It is the first stop on the right after the entrance. This area gives you a sneak peek of how beautiful this park is. Beehives are these awesome sandstone formations that resemblance giant beehives. They were created by geologic cross-bedding. This means the layers or beds represent different layers of silt that are deposited at different times. The layers indicate the angle of the wind or water was moving at the time the silt was deposited. You can see these movements engraved in the grooves of the beehives. If you have extra time, don’t forget to explore the surrounding area. It is quite beautiful.

Atlatl Rock

Coordinates: 36°25’25.1″N 114°33’02.0″W

Atlatl Rock is located on Campground Road, which is about half a mile down the road from Beehives. This is where you can see up close and personal to petroglyphs that are thousands of years old, on top of a tall platform. The view up there is pretty cool too!

DSC01627-HDR

Coordinates: 36°25’18.5″N 114°33’16.2″W

Arch Rock is a short drive from Atlatl Rock on Campground Road. It is a small arch right off the side of the road. You can walk around to the back of the rock for a better angle. However, since arch rocks are usually very fragile, especially the smaller ones, please don’t climb on it. To be honest, there are way better arch rocks out there, especially if you’ve been to Arches or Joshua Tree National Park . However, it is still nice to visit if you’re in the area.

DSC07244-HDR

Fire Cave/Windstone Arch

Coordinates: 36°24’44.9″N 114°33’14.4″W

Fire Cave and Windstone Arch are also located on Campground Road. Campground Road is a loop that will take you back onto the main Valley of Fire Highway. The road turns into an unpaved, washboard road after Arch Rock. It can get very bumpy. This place is my favorite out of all the other stops. Here, you can explore a super cool wind cave called Fire Cave. It’s not hard to find but kind of confusing because there are many other wind caves around. You can see it right off the road if you know where to look. The Windstone Arch is a small arch off in the distance, to the right of the Fire Cave. There are so many other things to explore here. We ran out of time so we didn’t have a chance to really look around. However, we would love to on our next visit.

DSC01643-HDR

Seven Sisters

Coordinates: 36°25’35.5″N 114°30’08.2″W

Seven Sisters are yes, you guess it, seven towering red, eroded boulders surround by the sandy desert. At one time, they were a part of the nearby red formations. Because of the relentless forces of erosion, these rock towers are all that remain. This is a good place to stop for a quick lunch or picnics since there are tables and restrooms here.

Elephant Rock

Coordinates: 36°25’41.3″N 114°27’36.7″W

Elephant Rock is one of the most popular rock formations at Valley of Fire State Park. It is the closest to the East Entrance to the park. If you pay attention, you can see Elephant Rock on the side of the road. The coordinates above show where the actual rock is. Parking for this spot is just right before it. Please, do not park on the shoulders. There are trails to take you to the front and behind the formation. The view is definitely better from the back.

DSC01577

Mouse’s Tank Scenic Road

Coordinates: 36°25’43.0″N 114°30’50.2″W

If you’re visiting Valley of Fire State Park, you have to drive through Mouse’s Tank Scenic Road. Not only this scenic road will take you to most of the epic hikes in the park such as the Fire Wave or Pastel/Pink Canyon , but it’s also a breathtaking drive. Mouse’s Tank snakes through bright red narrow canyons, stunning viewpoints, and colorful rocks. It starts at the Visitor Center and ends at White Domes trailhead. This road is only 5.7 miles long.

DSC01585-HDR

Rainbow Vista Viewpoint

Coordinates: 36°27’01.3″N 114°30’55.1″W

The view of Mouse’s Tank Scenic Road from here is one of the best in the park. There is a small parking lot right in front. If you want to see the epic views of the Valley of Fire State Park, you’ll have to climb up a 64ft rock formation. This giant rock formation is located right next to the parking lot. It looks sketchy but it is definitely doable. You just have to take your time and be safe. The view from the top here is definitely worth that short climb. If you’re up for some hiking, the trailhead to Rainbow Vista/Fire Canyon Overlook is located right next to the restroom. It is an easy 1.75 mile loop.

DSC06666

Fire Canyon/Silica Dome Overlook

Coordinates: 36°27’20.2″N 114°30’09.3″W

After Rainbow Vista is Fire Canyon Road. This road will take you to Fire Canyon Overlook. The highlight of this area is the distinctive red and white sandstone formations of Fire Canyon and Silica Dome. The color contrast is striking, especially on overcast days.

DSC01491-HDR

If you do feel like getting out of the car for a hike you can also check out two of our favorite hikes in the park the Fire Wave Hike and Pastel canyon / Pink Canyon .

Best time to Visit Valley of Fire State Park

First things first—timing is everything!

Valley of Fire is in the Mojave Desert, which means it comes with all the weather extremes associated with a desert climate and can be unpleasantly hot in the summer.

The best time to visit the park is in the fall, winter, or spring when the temperatures are cooler and the crowds are thinner.

Trust me, you don’t want to be sweating bullets in the middle of summer when it can get up to a scorching 120 degrees!

How Much Time Do You Need To Visit Valley Of Fire

Valley of Fire is a relatively small park, so you can easily see 90% of the park in just one day!

And get this—many of the hikes in the park are super short—we’re talking less than a mile.

Where is Valley of Fire State park

The Valley of Fire State Park is located in the Mojave Desert about an hour (55 miles) northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Directions to valley of fire state park

Now, let’s talk logistics. There are two entrances to Valley of Fire State Park. You can either drive in from the west entrance or the east Entrance. But the most common is to take a day trip from Las Vegas.

Valley of Fire From Las Vegas (West Entrance): If you’re taking a day trip from Las Vegas, the west entrance is the most common way to get to Valley of Fire. Head northeast on I-15, then take exit 75 and follow the signs for Valley of Fire State Park.

Valley of Fire From Lake Mead (East Entrance): If you’re feeling adventurous and want to take the scenic route, you can also enter the park from the East Entrance. To get there, you’ll need to drive through the stunning Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which is a destination in its own right.

Day Trip Information for Visiting Valley of Fire from Las Vegas

Valley of fire state park entrance fee.

As of March 2023, the fee for day-use entry to Valley of Fire State Park is $10 for those who reside in Nevada, while out-of-state and foreign visitors will need to pay $15. So don’t forget to bring some cash with you because the park only accepts cash payments.

And unfortunately, the America the Beautiful Annual National Park passes will not get you free entry. But, you can enjoy the Valley of Fire from sunrise to sunset.

Rules of Visiting Valley of Fire

Be sure to follow the park rules when exploring this extremely fragile landscape to protect it for future generations:

  • Do not remove or harm any plants, artifacts or rocks
  • No petting or feeding animals
  • Pack out trash
  • Stay on the roads and trails
  • Keep pets on a leash
  • Drone use is not allowed

Day Trip Tips for Visiting Valley of Fire

No cell service.

Prepare for a phone-less experience at Valley of Fire. With spotty cell service, you may not be able to make calls or send texts while in the park—but you may be able to get signal at the east and west entrances and at white domes. I also had some 5G service while at Rainbow Vista.

We also highly recommend having a physical map of Valley of Fire so you can easily find where you want to go.

Fill your Gas Tank

Valley of Fire is a stunning desert oasis. But fill up your gas tank before you get there, as it’s a remote area in Nevada and there are no options for refueling in the park. If you do need to fill up near Valley of Fire, head over to Overton, eleven miles from the park.

Visitor Center

Is open from 8:30 am – 4:30pm daily and offers a variety of different activities. You can find interpretive displays and educational exhibits. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop where you can find souvenirs, snacks and beverages.

Pack a lunch

It’s recommended that you bring your own lunch and snacks when visiting Valley of Fire State Park. Although there are snacks and beverages at the visitor center, you should bring a lunch to make the most of your one day in the park.

Best Things to Do In One day at Valley of Fire State Park

The formations in this park are pretty unreal and our guide is perfect if you only have one day to explore Valley of Fire.

Please note, there are a ton of other stops you can make along the way, but in this one-day guide, we are recommending the best of the best.

Las Vegas To Valley Of Fire Itinerary

Welcome to the Valley of Fire State Park, where the earth is on fire with vibrant red sandstone formations, awe-inspiring desert vistas, and some seriously ancient petroglyphs.

This guide works best when you enter the park from the west entrance (coming from Las Vegas). So without further ado, here are the best things to do in Valley of Fire—in the order of how you should see them:

  • Atlatl Rock Petroglyphs
  • Mouse Tank Road Viewpoint
  • Pink Canyon
  • White Domes
  • Elephant Rock

1. Beehives

guide to valley of fire state park

Alright, fellow adventurers, let’s buzz on over to Beehives—the first spot on our Valley of Fire State Park list!

No, we’re not talking about actual beehives filled with buzzing bees (although that would be pretty cool too), but rather a cluster of towering red sandstone formations that look like, you guessed it, beehives!

The beehives are unique sandstone formations eroded by wind and water that do, in fact, look like giant bee hives—which is why they’re so fun to explore! The rocks are a fun place to climb around and check out the interesting textures.

2. Fire Cave

Fire Cave Valley of Fire State Park in one Day

After checking out the beehives, you’re going to want to get on the scenic loop drive to check out 3 quick attractions. The first of which is the Fire Cave.

Carved wildly into the region’s characteristic red sandstone, this small but mighty cave is a favorite among photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

The interplay of light and shadow, combined with the fiery red hues, make for some truly stunning shots. It’s no wonder that this cave has become a popular spot for photographers looking to capture the beauty of Valley of Fire State Park.

Finding the cave is a lot easier if you know where to look. Here are the GPS coordinates of the Fire Cave .

3. Arch Rock

guide to valley of fire state park

A short drive down the Scenic Loop in Valley of Fire State Park will take you to a small parking area where you can catch a glimpse of Arch Rock.

While it may not be as grand as some of the other arches in the southwest, it’s still worth a quick stop for an easy photo opportunity.

As we pulled into the parking area, we couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed by Arch Rock’s size.

However, we quickly realized that it’s not about the grandeur of the arch, but rather the intricate details and unique features that make it special.

The best way to experience arch rock is by looking at it from a distance. This monument is far too delicate to walk or climb on so please respect the signs and enjoy with your eyes only.

You can use this as an opportunity for a quick an easy photo op!

4. Atlatl Rock Petroglyphs

The last stop on the Scenic loop is Atlatl Rock. This towering red sandstone formation is home to some seriously cool petroglyphs, aka ancient rock art.

I felt like a real-life Indiana Jones exploring the rock face, trying to decipher the meaning behind the symbols.

Climb the metal staircase to see get up and personal with these incredible petroglyphs from ancient cultures that have been preserved for over 4,000 years.

The intricate carvings etched into the rock were nothing short of amazing. It’s awe-inspiring to think that these ancient works of art have been preserved for thousands of years, offering us a glimpse into the lives and cultures of those who came before us.

guide to valley of fire state park

The petroglyphs are best seen in the morning when they’re illuminated by sunlight.

Later on, as it gets into late afternoon and early evening hours, you won’t be able to see them well because of shadows.

5. Mouse Tank Road Viewpoint

Okay, buckle up cause we’re getting off the on the Valley of Fire Road and headed to Mouse tank road.

Make your way past the park’s visitor center, and you’ll find yourself on mouse tank road, a winding road that offers some of the most stunning views of the rugged valley.

The road is flanked by towering red sandstone formations and jagged rock formations that create a dramatic backdrop.

This stretch of road is one of the most scenic and picturesque routes in the Valley of Fire State Park. You’ll find plenty of places to pull over and snap some Instagram-worthy photos of the rugged valley.

guide to valley of fire state park

If you’re looking for the ultimate view, climb up on the rocks that overlook the road just past rainbow vista.

While drones are not allowed in Nevada state parks, this is the perfect opportunity to channel your inner adventurer and capture some amazing photos of the road from up above.

This viewpoint is also stunning at sunset on your way out of the park!

Now, let’s talk about the name “Mouse Tank.” Did you know that it was named after an outlaw who used the area as a hideout in the 1890s? Yes, you heard that right! The infamous outlaw found refuge from law enforcement in this very spot.

6. Pink (Pastel) Canyon

Pink canyon, otherwise known as pastel canyon, is a hidden gem in the valley of fire state park.

The thing is, Pink Canyon isn’t marked on the map they give you at the entrance of the park. But don’t let that stop you! It’s a quick and scenic hike that’s so pretty.

But here’s the real kicker—if you hike far enough into the canyon, it’ll actually take you to the backside of the Fire Wave (which will be on your left). So if you want to knock out two hikes and only have to park once, this is how to do it.

To find Pink Canon, stop at Wash no. 5 and hike off the road to the right.

Pastel Canyon Valley of Fire

7. Fire Wave Trail

Hold onto your hats, folks, because we’re about to talk about one of the most popular attractions in the Valley of Fire State Park—Fire Wave!

And trust me when I say, it’s easy to see why this place draws a crowd. The sandstone formations have an almost mesmerizing effect that was created by wind erosion centuries ago, leaving behind these beautiful patterns that look like an ocean wave made out of fire.

It’s almost too pretty to be real!

And get this—the 1.4 mile out and back hike to Fire Wave is reminiscent of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument Wave in Arizona, though not as expansive.

But don’t let that fool you, the Valley of Fire Wave still offers up some seriously amazing views, and you don’t need a permit to see it!

guide to valley of fire state park

The hike to this stunning geological phenomenon takes about an hour and thirty minutes and is rated as easy, with less than 300 feet of elevation gain.

So, even if you’re not an experienced hiker, you can still experience the magic of the Fire Wave.

8. The White Domes Trail

The last stop on Mouse Tank road is the White Dome Trail. There is also a picknick area, making it a perfect time to stop and have your lunch.

The White Domes Trail is one of the longest trails in Valley of Fire, at 1.25 miles this trail packs a punch with stunning rock formations and slot canyons to explore.

White Domes Trail Valley of Fire State Park

As you make your way along the trail, you’ll be greeted by towering red and white sandstone formations. But the real magic happens when you reach the slot canyons.

These narrow passageways through the rock formations are absolutely breathtaking. You’ll feel like you’re in a completely different world! But don’t worry, this trail is rated as moderate and is suitable for hikers of all experience levels.

9. Elephant Rock

As you make your way back towards Valley of Fire Road, take a left towards Elephant Rock located near the east entrance of the park.

As you approach Elephant Rock, the sheer size of the formation is incredible. The rock formation stands tall, seemingly defying gravity as if it’s been frozen in time for millennia.

The massive rock appears to have been carved with care, each curve and crevice carefully crafted by the hand of nature—it’s a must see for any geologist or animal enthusiast.

Elephant Rock Valley of Fire State Park

The rock formation is named Elephant Rock due to its uncanny resemblance to an elephant in profile view.

You’ll be amazed at how accurately the rock mimics the shape of the majestic creature, complete with the iconic trunk and ears. It’s as though Mother Nature herself decided to create a larger-than-life tribute to one of the most magnificent creatures on the planet.

If you’re feeling adventurous, take the time to explore the area around Elephant Rock.

Other notable areas to explore if you have time

These are other short hikes and attractions throughout Valley of fire. Depending on how much time you have you may be able to add some of these other short hikes to your one-day Valley of Fire itinerary.

Rainbow Vista

Rainbow Vista is a great hike for the family that offers a mix of boulders and breathtaking views at every turn, leaving you mesmerized by the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

But wait, there’s more! At the end of the trail, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning viewpoint of even more red boulders. It’s the perfect spot to capture some Insta-worthy photos.

Now, before you start this hike, we must warn you—the trail can get pretty sandy. So, be prepared to have some sand in your shoes by the end of the hike.

guide to valley of fire state park

Mouse Tank Trail

This hike may not be the most thrilling on the list, but it’s still worth checking out if you’ve got time.

And although the trail is relatively short and easy, it’s packed with history and natural marvels. As you venture along the path, you’ll discover ancient petroglyphs scattered along the trail.

And that’s not all! At the end of the trail is a natural tank that fills with water during certain seasons.

But, before you start your adventure, we must remind you to treat the petroglyphs with respect. These are beautiful, ancient works of art that should not be touched or altered.

Let’s do our part to preserve this cultural heritage for future generations to come.

Petrified Logs

Petrified Logs are a unique collection of ancient pines that have turned to stone over millions of years. While the logs are protected behind small fences and touching them is not allowed, it’s still a truly fascinating experience to witness this geochemical phenomenon up close.

Experts believe that these logs are primitive evergreens, known as Araucarian Pines, which were transported by floodwaters from the vast forests that once covered Nevada over 150 million years ago. Buried under the soil, the logs slowly leached mineral-rich groundwater that seeped into the bark and between the fibers, resulting in their stunning petrified state.

  • Wear Sunscreen: The desert is a particularly harsh environment for the skin, so it’s important to keep your skin protected with an SPF of 30 or more.
  • Avoid Hiking During the Hottest Part of the Day: The hot sun can make even short hikes difficult under normal conditions, so plan accordingly by avoiding hikes during peak hours when temperatures are highest.

What to Bring on your Visit To Valley of Fire

Enjoying the Nevada desert is a special experience. Make sure you pack these items before your one-day visit to Valley of Fire State Park:

Visiting the  Valley of Fire from Las Vegas  was a lovely experience. The  drive to Valley of Fire  is quick and easy, and we got views of the Lake Mead Recreation Area along the way.

Valley of Fire is Nevada’s first designated state park and was officially established in 1935. The park consists of approximately 40,000 acres in the Mojave Desert, about an hour north of the famous Las Vegas Strip. The park has hiking trails, campgrounds, and a Visitor Center.

Valley of Fire gets its name from the amazing red sandstone formations that were formed 150 million years ago. Prehistoric tribes, such as the Basket Maker people and later the Anasazi Pueblo farmers, spent time in the park, probably hunting and gathering. There are even ancient petroglyphs located in several areas of the park!

Valley of Fire has abundant wildlife, including bighorn sheep, lizards, snakes, coyotes, kit foxes, and the rare and protected desert tortoise. There are also numerous species of birds and many beautiful plants.

Ways to travel from Vegas to Valley Of Fire

There are really only two options to travel from Las Vegas to Valley of Fire – drive yourself or take a tour from Las Vegas.

Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are not an option because of the distance from Vegas and the difficulty of getting a return ride from the Valley of Fire State Park to Las Vegas. Plus, the park is really large, and it is not feasible to explore it all on foot once you let the Uber go.

Drive yourself to Valley of Fire – If you are planning to rent a car in Vegas, then you can drive yourself to Valley of Fire. This is what we did.

Valley of Fire tours from Las Vegas – The next best option to drive, and the more common one, is to take a tour from Vegas. I recommend this small group Valley of Fire Hiking Tour from Las Vegas .

Most folks avoid renting a car in Vegas due to the steep parking prices on the Strip. So, taking a tour is the way to go. Out of our ten visits to Vegas, this is the first time we rented a car!

Stunning red rock landscape at Valley of Fire. Visiting Valley of Fire from Las Vegas is a great day trip

Valley of Fire to Las Vegas

If you drove yourself to Valley of Fire Las Vegas, you most probably entered from the West Entrance on Valley of Fire Hwy.

To return to Las Vegas from Valley of Fire, you can either go back the way you came or do the full loop and go out of the East Entrance and then reconnect to I-15N via NV-169 N.

We had time in our day and wanted to see the entire park, especially the Elephant Rock, which is near the East Entrance, so we drove the full loop.

You can also drive to Elephant Rock and still return via the West Entrance. The road through the state park is two-way, so you can turn around at designated spots.

Things to do at Valley of Fire State Park

Visiting Valley of Fire is one of the best outdoor things to do in Vegas besides gambling ! The top things to do on my list for Valley of Fire were the scenic drive through Mouse’s Tank Road and the Fire Wave hike.

There are only two main roads in the park – The Valley of Fire Road and the Mouse’s Tank Road. All the attractions are on one of these routes.

Below are some of the top Valley of Fire attractions we explored:

Valley of Fire Road

The Valley of Fire Hwy is the road that connects the west and the east entrances of the park. It is around 7 miles one-way between the two roads.

Valley of Fire road with beautiful panoramic landscape on both sides

It is the road that you will be on once you enter the park. We saw 360-degree panoramic views of the park as soon as we entered and glimpses of the red hills and the beehive rocks.

There are some attractions on this road, like the Arch Rock, Atlatl Rock, Elephant Rock, and Seven Sisters Picnic Area.

We drove all the way from the West Entrance to the East Entrance of the park and explored attractions along the way.

Mouse’s Tank Road Scenic Drive

Mouse’s Tank Road (also called the White Domes Road) is somewhere between the East and West Entrances and is the most scenic part of the state park. Do not miss driving on this road! This is the road that you see in most photos of Valley of Fire.

Stunning Mouse's Tank Road with fiery red rock cliffs on both sides of a winding road - in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.

The Valley of Fire Visitor Center is at the start of the Mouse’s Tank Road, and the road ends at the White Domes Loop parking lot. It is around 5.5 miles one-way.

There are several parking lots along the side of the road to pull out for photos or just to admire the scenery. Several parking lots had picnic areas and restrooms.

There are several hiking trails along the Mouse’s Tank Road, like Mouse’s Tank Trail, Rainbow Vista, Fire Wave Trail, and White Domes Loop.

This scenic drive lived up to its hype. It was just so stunning with the windy road with dips and climbs and the red rock formations on both sides.

We visited in January around late afternoon, just before sunset, so that made the drive even more pleasant weather-wise, and the lighting was perfect.

Fire Wave Trail

We only had time to do one hike on our Valley of Fire day trip, so I checked at the Visitor Center, and the park ranger told me that the Fire Wave trail was the most popular one. So, we hiked the Fire Wave in Valley of Fire park.

Trail with loose red sand and huge red boulders in the background

To reach the Fire Wave Trailhead, we drove towards the end of the Mouse’s Tank Road to Parking lot P3. It was late afternoon on a pleasant winter day, and the weather was just perfect for the hike.

The hike starts across the parking lot. There were many people on the trail. We walked through red sand and past some giant boulders to reach the trail part with the rocky rolling hills with striped colors.

A couple posing on the rolling striped hills of fire wave trail in Valley of Fire State Park

The red boulders had wave-like formations, with red, pink, and white swirl-like patterns in the rocks.

There is a marked trail here, but folks were walking, taking pics on the red rocks everywhere. The entire area looked really scenic in the evening glow. We loved exploring the colorful rocky terrain.

The Fire Wave trail is 1.5 miles out and back in total. You can do a full loop by combining it with the Seven Wonders or Pink/Pastel Canyon trail, which is a little longer. We didn’t do the loop and did the out-and-back trail.

On the other side of the parking lot, there were incredible pink-colored rock formations. It was beautiful!

light pink colored rock formations in Valley of Fire State Park

It took us around an hour total to explore the Fire Wave trail, but we stopped a lot for photos.

My entire family loved this hike, including my teen kids. I would say visiting Valley of Fire and doing the Fire Wave hike is one of the best Las Vegas attractions for kids .

There is no shade anywhere, so make sure to carry water with you. It was evening and pleasant when we went, but it can be very hot on a sunny day during mid-day.

Elephant Rock

The Elephant Rock is just before the east entrance of the park. There is a small 0.2-mile trail along the side of the road to see Elephant Rock.

The rock has an arch that looks like the trunk of an elephant, since the unique name.

Elephant shaped rock formation seen on top of a red rock boulder

I took the picture from the road; hence, the rocks in the back are kind of making the elephant’s shape less distinct. I should have climbed up and taken a pic from behind to get a better photo! Nevertheless, it was a unique rock formation!

Also, from here, you can see panoramic views of the desert and the state park. It was amazing!

Beehives (Rock formations)

Beehives are rocks with holes in them. They were everywhere, but we saw most of them near the West Entrance at the Beehives parking lot and near the east entrance where the Elephant Rock is.

REd rocks with large holes that look like beehives at Valley of Fire State Park

Valley of Fire Visitor Center

The visitor center is at the start of the Mouse’s Tank Road. It’s a great place for a restroom break and to get information from the park rangers.

The Visitor Center has exhibits to help you learn more about the history and geology of the park. We got a park map at the West Entrance when we paid the entrance fee of $15.

Valley of Fire Tours

About an hour from the Las Vegas Strip, the Valley of Fire State Park is the epitome of life in southern Nevada: the weather is almost always hot and sunny, it’s absolutely beautiful and it’s definitely rugged. The best time of the year to visit is during the cooler months, but if you're here in the summer, you can always drive through the park from the comfort of your air-conditioned vehicle for around $10. There are otherworldly rock formations like the swirling Fire Wave and Elephant Rock, ancient petroglyphs painted on the sides of canyons (like, real ones), one of our favorite hiking trails, Atlatl Rock and so much more. Your trip to Las Vegas wouldn’t be complete without a trek through this scenic desert oasis.

Best time to visit Valley of Fire State Park

Lina Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog hiking the Rainbow Vista Trail in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.

Open year-round, Valley of Fire State Park is an exciting day trip destination at any season. However, the cooler months are ideal for anyone who wants to experience the top things to do in Valley of Fire State Park.

The desert heat in summer may be too intense for hiking or a prolonged stay. With milder and more pleasant temperatures, fall and spring surely are perfect for hiking and exploring the Valley of Fire State Park.

For those who want to steer clear of the crowds, visit the park in winter. Not only is it the least busy season, but the temperatures and conditions are also prime for hiking.

Morning is the best time to visit and see the wonders of Valley of Fire State Park. The midday crowds have yet to arrive, and the desert heat is more tolerable in the morning. Not to mention, the colors of the valley look striking at this time of the day.

Late afternoon is a fantastic time to visit Valley of Fire State Park too since the temperatures are cooler and the crowds have already dissipated.

Here’s a breakdown of how you can experience a rocking day trip in Valley of Fire State Park.

1st stop: Beehives

There’s no better way to start a day trip to Valley of Fire State Park than to see the Beehives. Situated near the West Entrance Gate, this one-of-a-kind attraction is a collection of gorgeous orange rocks that look quite like gigantic beehives.

With a decent parking space, it’s a fabulous spot for a quick op in Valley of Fire State Park. If you’re feeling adventurous, you may climb up the rocks and snap some breathtaking selfies.

  • Time to spend: 10 to 30 minutes

2nd stop: The Visitor Center

Valley of Fire State Park Visitor Center Photographed by David Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog.

Set right in the heart of the park, the Visitors’ Center is, for most travelers, the first stop on their day trip to the Valley of Fire. However, since the Beehives are closer to the West Entrance, and it’s a quick pit stop, we made the Visitor Center the second stop on our itinerary.

As you wander around the center, you’ll find a ton of intriguing exhibits detailing the human and geological history of the area. Furthermore, it shares fun tidbits about the park’s fauna and flora.

You can also use the restroom and fill up your refillable water bottle. There is also a store to grab snacks and souvenirs. From there, you may take a short hike to the Balancing Rock as well.

  • Time to spend: 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Valley of Fire Luxury Tour Trekker Excursion
  • Valley of Fire ATV, UTV, or Dune Buggy Adventure

3rd stop: Hike the Fire Wave trail

Rocky landscape of the Fire Wave of the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada

No list of the best things to do in Valley of Fire State Park is complete without this scenic trail. As you hike this trail, you’ll find the famous and striking Fire Wave. With its swirling colors and ethereal formations, this landmark will remind you of Arizona’s iconic and world-famous Wave.

To me, it’s somewhat a mini version of the Wave. Additionally, it’s a fairly easy hike and even suitable for beginners. While there, find a nice spot where you can eat your lunch or enjoy a picnic.

4th stop: Hike the White Domes Trail

The sandy beginning of the White Domes Trail in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.

Keep things rolling and hike the second best and most popular trail in Valley of Fire State Park – White Domes. The hike starts where you’ve parked your car near Fire Wave trail.

Like the First Wave trail, this hike is pretty easy and beginner friendly. Along the way, you’ll spot tons of impressive rock formations, such as a small slot canyon and large boulders. There’s also the ruin of an old film set from the 1966 flick The Professionals.

Although not as alluring as the Fire Wave, this trail will still give you scores of dazzling views and sights.

You’ve already been on this picturesque road once on your way to the trails from the Visitor Center. This time, you should spend time making stops, taking photos, and relishing the scenery.

You’ll find several trailheads and pull-outs as you drive along this road. It’s all up to you where you’ll be stopping by to soak up the views.

We recommend checking out the Rainbow Vista trailhead where you’ll see some cool sights and views.

At the edge of White Domes Road, head to the left, and drive your way to the park’s East Entrance. Before you reach the entrance gate, take a glance on the road’s left side to spot the Elephant Rock.

Afterward, make your way to this unique formation, and find out why it’s called Elephant Rock. Once there, snap a ton of photos and selfies with the rock formation in the background. Just don’t climb the rock formation itself, as it can be rather dangerous.

The park is set right in the heart of the desert, meaning you can expect extreme temperatures. In winter, days are normally pleasant and mild. However, in summer, daytime temperatures hover around 100 degrees F.

You might also check any flash flood warnings. I know it sounds a little crazy, but the desert has washes, slot canyons, and other regions that can flood during thunderstorms.

Discover the Valley of Fire with this private tour

A private tour with WeVenture Las Vegas is always a completely custom itinerary, created just for you and your group! A private driving tour can be from 4 hours – 10 hours, depending on the destination. Pick-up and drop-off locations are the group’s choice. While many visitors to Vegas have specific sites they would like to see, many are happy to let our team create a custom itinerary that fits their interests, budget, mobility, and timeline. Typically, tours spend most of their time in and around Las Vegas, but we welcome any ideas for your dream tour.

Inclusions : Local English-speaking guide

Exclusions : Food and drink, souvenirs, tips and gratuities for the guide

No two groups are alike and we will plan a trip tailored to your group’s interests, budget, and needs. Below are some sample itineraries to use as inspiration for your perfect tour:

Half-Day Tour: This tour is designed to highlight the best of the Valley of Fire area (4-6 hours). Typically, a tour of this length can include 2-3 short hikes (depending on hike length), lunch, if arranged in advance, and a visit to the Park’s Visitor Center. Suggested shorter hikes include Mouse Tank, which is less than one mile through a canyon and best viewed during the lusher season; a venture out to see the petroglyphs at Atlatl Rock; and the impressive sandstone arch at Arch Rock. Elephant Rock, about a 1.25-mile loop, will especially be of interest to any Star Trek fans. For the geology diehards, add on the popular viewpoint at Fire Canyon-Silica Dome to see formations made of almost pure silica. An easy-to-moderate hike on White Domes Trail will give you brilliant contrasting colors and sweeping desert vistas.

Full-Day Tour: This tour (7-10 hours) offers you the opportunity to really explore the Valley of Fire in depth. You’ll be able to take some longer hikes, enjoy the scenic drive and take in the park’s many highlights and viewpoints, or spend time in Las Vegas at the beginning or end of your tour. Longer hikes could include The Fire Wave, a 1.5-mile round-trip hike with white and red zebra print sandstone which takes the shape of a wave; White Domes, a short (1.25 miles) but challenging hike in the park (while still very manageable), involving climbing over boulders, through slot canyons, and over a steep and uneven natural staircase; or Charlie’s Spring or Pinnacle’s Loop – both about 4.5 miles, offering more solitude and scenic views. Whatever you choose for your day exploring the Valley of Fire, your desert wish is our command!

  • Chevron down Health and Safety Information - Hiking in Nevada

Most hikes in the Valley of Fire State Park are easy to moderately difficult and can be done with children. We strongly advise bringing 2-3 liters of water per hike. Your guide will be monitoring the heat and weather conditions. We also encourage you to be very conscious of the desert heat and your group members. We strongly recommend sunscreen, hats, and extra water if taking this tour from April-September.

VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK

valley of fire driving tour

Experience some of Nevada’s most beautiful scenery just minutes from the Las Vegas Strip. Stunning red sandstone rock formations, miles of easy & challenging riding trails in the World Famous Logandale Trails System offers a trip you will never forget. Valley of Fire is Nevada’s oldest and largest state park, dedicated in 1935. Ancient trees and early man are represented throughout the park by areas of petrified wood and 3,000-year-old Indian petroglyphs.

LAS VEGAS VALLEY OF FIRE HISTORY:

The Las Vegas Valley of Fire derives its name from red sandstone formations, formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs, 150 million years ago. Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created the present landscape.

Other important rock formations include limestones, shales, and conglomerates. Prehistoric users of the Las Vegas Valley of Fire included the Basket Maker people and later the Anasazi Pueblo farmers from the nearby fertile Moapa Valley.

The span of approximate occupation has been dated from 300 B.C.E. to 1150 C.E. Their visits probably involved hunting, food gathering, and religious ceremonies, although the scarcity of water would have limited the length of their stay. Fine examples of rock art left by these ancient peoples can be found at several sites within the park.

PLANTS AND ANIMALS:

The area plant community is dominated by widely spaced creosote bush, burro bush, and brittlebush. Several cactus species, including beaver tail and cholla, are also common. The springtime bloom of such plants as the desert marigold, indigo bush, and desert mallow are often spectacular along park roads.

Resident birds include the raven, house finch, sage sparrow, and roadrunner. Many migrant birds also pass through the park. Most desert animals are nocturnal and not frequently seen by the passing motorist. Many species of lizards and snakes are common in the park, as well as the coyote, kit fox, spotted skunk, black tailed jackrabbit, and antelope ground squirrel.

The desert tortoise is a rare species and is protected by state law. If you are lucky enough to come across one please leave this likeable and harmless creature to live its life in peace in its own environment.
