Virgin Voyages Bar Menus and Drink Prices 2024

by Prof. Cruise · Published February 21, 2023 · Updated January 14, 2024

A bunch of bar menus from the Scarlet Lady, the Valiant Lady, and the Resilient Lady on Virgin with test that reads: Virgin Voyages Bar Menus and Drink Prices 2024.

These menus are current on the Resilient Lady, Scarlet Lady, and Valiant Lady at the time of posting, but always double check once onboard as prices do get updated occasionally to reflect market conditions.

But before we get to the menus, here are a few commonly asked questions regarding beverages on Virgin cruises:

Virgin Voyages Beverages: FAQ’s

Try saying that 5 times fast! Oh, that could be a fun bar game! After a few shots!

Is Soda Free on Virgin Cruises?

Yes! Soda and carbonated beverages, sparkling and filtered water, juice, a selection of teas, and drip coffee is included in your cruise fare. This sets Virgin apart from most other non-luxury lines. As noted on the menus, you will pay extra for specialty coffees, mocktails, smoothies, fresh-pressed juice, milkshakes and floats, and energy drinks in addition to all alcoholic beverages .

Does Virgin Offer a Drink Package?

Virgin Voyages does not currently offer drink packages on the Scarlet Lady or the Valiant Lady, so you’ll be paying for premium drinks à la carte. However, Virgin offers something called “ Bar Tab ” where you can add funds to your account prior to sailing to be used on alcohol and other premium beverages and frequently offers a great promotion…

What’s the Bar Tab Promotion on Virgin Cruises?

If you pre-purchase $300 worth of bar credit to be used on premium beverages (any beverage for which there is an extra charge), Virgin will throw in an extra $50 . So spend $300 and get $350 toward drinks that can be enjoyed by anyone in your cabin anywhere on the ship OR at the Virgin Voyages Beach Club at Bimini. Note that the credit is non-refundable , so be sure to spend it all!

Can I use my Bar Tab to buy Drinks for Others?

Yes! And unlike a drink package on other cruise lines, not everyone in your cabin will need to purchase a “Bar Tab.”

What’s Virgin’s Policy for Bringing Alcohol Onboard?

Sailors (guests) may bring two (750ml) bottles of wine onboard per cabin in your carry-on luggage. No other alcohol is permitted to be carried on.

Do Virgin Ships Serve Coke or Pepsi Products

Coke. And Dr. Pepper is NOT served . Which may lead some to ask…

Can I Bring my Own Soda or Water Onboard Virgin Cruise Ships?

Yes , but not in single-use plastic containers. Stick to cans or boxes .

Now, onto why you’re probably here, the porn! Drink menu porn that is (you’ll have to wait until you’re onboard to see how “adult” these cruises actually are)!

All prices are in US dollars .

Thanks for all your help with the drink prices! We are cruising in June and am thinking about getting another $300 bar tab. Would greatly appreciate clarification on the following: -Does every restaurant have the same wine choices? It doesn’t seem to be that way from looking at some menus. Maybe just not on price list? I’d like to stick with the same inexpensive price/type of a chardonnay and cabernet.

Can I order a well drink, i.e., vodka and tonic, rum and coke, mojito at all bars? Is the price determined by the liquor brand I ask for? I saw Absolut was the least expensive, followed by Tito’s.

Virgin Voyages Restaurant and Bar Menus (with prices)

Last Updated on March 18, 2022

Virgin Voyages is the newest major cruise line to launch in North America. Originally scheduled to launch in 2020, they are finally getting ready to launch in the US in the coming weeks. They position themselves as a premium cruise experience and have tried to challenge the “norms” that are found on most other mainstream cruise lines.

Some of the biggest changes in regard to food beverage are:

  • No Additonal-Fee Specialty Restaurants – cruisers can go to any restaurant on board and not pay an extra dime for food. Each venue will have have some premium options on the menu you can pay for for (see menu’s below)
  • Non-alcoholic Beverages Included – unlike many other cruise lines, fresh juices, soda, and premium coffees are included in the cruise fare.
  • No drink packages – Virgin Voyages doesn’t currently have a drink package. They do have the option to pre-pay for drinks at a discount, but there is no unlimited drink option on Virgin Voyages sailings.

Extra Virgin Menu

Extra Virgin is Virgin Voyage’s take on Italian cuisine. You’ll find some great dishes made with homemade pasta like potato gnocchi with truffle butter sauce and spaghetti with little neck clams. If you prefer meat, try their grilled Mediterranean sea bass or porcini-rubbed New York strip.

The Galley Menu

The galley is Virgin Voyages version of the cruise buffet. You won’t find any warming dishes here, and Virgin Voyages refused to call it a “buffet”, but you’ll find a variety of quick grab food options here. You’ll find a few stations like The Daily Mix, Diner & Dash, Bento Baby, Burger Bar, Let’s Taco Bout It, Hot Off the Press, and Noodle Around.

Virgin Voyages Drink Prices & Drink Menus. A Guide to the Bars & Lounges on Board.

Virgin Voyages is nearly “all-inclusive” barring their alcoholic beverages and specialty coffees. Some of the most common questions that come up when people ask about Virgin Voyages are about their drink prices, packages, and drink menus. So let’s get to the details and answer some of those questions.

Common questions about Virgin Voyages drink prices and menus

Are drinks included on virgin voyages.

Soda, water, tea, coffee, and juices from the fountain are included, however alcoholic beverages and specialty coffees are an additional cost.

How Much Are Drinks & Cocktails on Virgin Voyages’ Cruises?

Surprisingly, they’re not inflated and are pretty reasonable for a cruise. Unlike other cruise lines, Virgin Voyages has priced its beverages similarly to land-based resorts and hotels.

Does Virgin Voyages have a drink package?

Not really, but they do have what they refer to as a “bar tab” where you prepay for drinks and they often bonus extra funds as a promotion. Read more about Virgin Voyages Drink Packages here .

Moet Prices Have Changed!

On all of the menus you’ll find online about Virgin Voyages drink prices, you’ll see Moet Chandon priced at $95/bottle. The price has increased now and Moet on Virgin Voyages costs $105/bottle!

Updated virign voyages drink and bar prices

The Manor Drink Menu & Prices

For those that aren’t familiar with The Manor, it is the amazing “night club” and entertainment spot on all Virgin Voyages ships. With a swanky and elegant bar with a seating area and bottle service, it replicates some of the nicest land-based clubs & entertainment venues.

Here’s what Virgin Voyages says about The Manor:

The two-story, three bar space, named after Richard’s first recording studio, is inspired by a classic theatrical zeitgeist layered with a moody and sexy ’70s, punk vibe. Ground breaking shows will kick the night off before it transitions into a mind-blowing, goodbye-early-morning-workout nightclub. Virgin Voyages

Sip Lounge Menu & Drink Prices

Sip Lounge is the quiet, upscale bar area designated as a “champagne & caviar” bar, but it’s more than that. You can get a full range of cocktails, wine, and champagne while relaxing in the comfy velvet lounges and people-watch for hours. Afternoon tea is also served in this lounge area.

Here’s what Virgin Voyages says about Sip Lounge:

Our curated champagne lounge, SIP, was designed to satisfy all your champagne and caviar needs. From an afternoon tea menu to an effervescent nightcap, this is the spot to come to whenever you’re craving a twist on a classic cocktail or a sparkly refresher in the form of a glass of bubbles. Virgin Voyages

On The Rocks Bar Menu

On The Rocks is the central meeting point of any Virgin Voyage ship where everyone gathers to experience a wide range of spirits, wines, and champagne. The bar is a blend of chic lounge mixed with entertainment space where live music and trivia can be found at various points throughout the day.

What Virgin Voyages says about On The Rocks

Shake it, stir, pour it, and procure it It’s the can’t-miss cocktail bar on board. Our mixology bar on board focuses on aged spirits poured over ice (hence the name), and is the perfect place to make bold choices…. with a twist. Or really shake it up (wink), and challenge our mixologists to make you something extra special. Forget the menu and tell the bartender what flavors you lik then watch as a unique masterpiece is created before your very eyes. Kick-start the evening or round out the night with a cocktail that’s perfectly crafted for you. Virgin Voyages

The Dock Bar & Dock House

The indoor/outdoor bar and lounge concept at the rear of the ship has multiple bars as well as table service and small bites with a Mediterranean flair. Great for lounging and overlooking the wake of the ship while sipping on various wines & special cocktails offered daily.

Draught House Beer Prices & Menu

The Draught House is really just a bar off to the side with about 10 beer taps and other beers by the can / bottle. It’s unfortunate that this seems like an afterthought on the Virgin ships as there is no real vibe or apparent purpose. A few simple chairs and tables in a space with mostly empty beer taps is not very inviting or interesting. This was one of our biggest disappointments on the entire ship.

Here’s what Virgin says about the Draught House

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder at the Draught Haus. A selective beer drinker’s go-to, Draught Haus features a variety of beers on tap, a wide range of artisanal bottles, boiler makers and shot cocktails. This airy beach bar meets stylish craft beer house provides plenty of places to sit back and sip, or just grab a growler for those ‘bring your brew with you’ kind of days. Chill, casual but discerning beer connoisseur approved You can always stop by for breakfast where we serve our “All Day Breakfast” shots. Virgin Voyages

Any low Carb beers & low sugar tonic?

I don’t recall seeing low carb beers (I know our friends asked for M. Ultra and it wasn’t there, but not sure about others) … as for the tonic. Unfortunately they didn’t have any tonic other than what came out of the gun 🙁 – I asked, since FeverTree diet tonic is my fav! Kind of a bummer.

Dinner reservations can be made pre-cruise using the Sailor app; though, brunch reservations can only be made once onboard the ship. Of note, you are limited to one advanced dinner reservation at each restaurant.

We tried every bar on Virgin Voyages and ranked them from best to worst

Erica Silverstein

Pub crawl! If ever a cruise line was made for bar hopping, it's Virgin Voyages . Its identical "Lady Ships" were imagined as adult playgrounds, and when grownups are having fun, you know alcohol is often a part of the equation. (Not that it has to be.)

Not all bars are created equal, though, and on a short four- or five-night sailing, you have to prioritize. So I vowed to discover which bars are the best on the ship — and which you can skip.

From martinis to margaritas, I tried every bar on Scarlet Lady (the first of the line's three ships) and ranked them from best to worst. Here are my top picks for a night out or a unique libation — and which venues failed to live up to the hype.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

virgin cruise bar menu

Vibe: This elegant Champagne lounge was my favorite bar on board — and I don't even like Champagne! The venue brings the luxe feel with gauzy white curtains, curved seating centered around giant porthole windows and a giant bedazzled bottle of bubbly. It's the place to see and be seen in the evening; clearly, it was everyone else's favorite bar, as well.

Sip gets extra points because, on sea days, it serves a lovely afternoon tea. Sip tea and nibble scones and finger sandwiches, with or without a Champagne add-on, like the lord or lady you know yourself to be.

Prices: Champagne by the glass runs $21 to $65, wines $8 to $29 and signature cocktails $13 to $14.

virgin cruise bar menu

The TPG take: Whether you prefer bubbly or bourbon, this bar is a not-to-be-missed evening destination. Gather your posse 'round between dinner and the show and scope out everyone's evening attire. It's extra happening on Scarlet Night when you might catch an impromptu performance or even get a hush-hush invite to a secret event.

Best drink: If you're not drinking straight-up Champagne, espresso martinis are all the rage at Sip. They'll keep you energized for the late-night partying ahead of you.

Related: The best cruise ship bars

On the Rocks

Vibe: Everyone ends up at On the Rocks at some point, as the martini and cocktail bar is one of the largest on board and is in a high-traffic area on Deck 6. It's under the stairs from the Roundabout atrium and you'll pass it on your way between dinner, the shops, the casino, night club and performance space. Small-group musical acts switch off throughout the evening, so there's always something going on.

virgin cruise bar menu

Prices: Signature cocktails cost $13 to $17, beer $6 to $12.

The TPG take: I didn't hang out at this bar enough, only discovering how fun the late-night jazzy quartet was at the end of my cruise. The bar has everything — counter seating in a dark, cavelike location, conversation nooks in the back by the windows and perfect people-watching perches across from the shops. The ship's roving magician may make an appearance and delight you with some card tricks. Don't dismiss it as just an atrium bar — On the Rocks is a destination.

Best drink: The number-one drink at On the Rocks, according to my server, is The Entertainer. It's actually two drinks in one, a syrupy-sweet concoction of Absolut Vanilla, passion fruit puree and lime served with a shot glass of sparkling wine. You cut the sweet cocktail with the dry wine, and it works — until the shot runs out faster than the martini glass. It's certainly an entertaining experience worth ordering at least once.

The Dock House Bar

virgin cruise bar menu

Vibe: Pretend you're chilling at a chic Mediterranean resort when you make your way to the Dock House Bar, the tucked-away pre-dinner drink spot off the main Dock House lounge.

Prices: Signature cocktails run $11 to $15.

The TPG take: The Dock House and its alfresco counterpart, The Dock (same menu), are, in my mind, the most attractive hangout areas on board. The cozy couch seating dotted with (fake) greenery, the outdoor clusters of low wooden tables and chairs, and the Greek-inspired white-and-blue bar feel sophisticated yet inviting. You feel like a movie star.

virgin cruise bar menu

Strike up a conversation with your neighbor or the friendly bartenders at the 10-seat Dock House Bar before you make your way to your next meal.

Best drink: The Golden Horizon is a colorful drink that's a play on a Tequila Sunrise. It combines tequila, passionfruit liqueur, honey and fresh basil into a refreshing drink that will have everyone stopping you to ask, "What are you drinking? I want one!"

Related: Too hip or just right? Here's what it was really like sailing on Virgin Voyages for the first time

Grounds Club

virgin cruise bar menu

Vibe: The ship's version of Starbucks is equally happy to serve you a croissant (for free) or a coffee drink with a shot of Bailey's. Busiest in the morning, the Grounds Club also has an outpost in The Galley on Deck 15, so you don't have to travel decks between your caffeine fix and your morning meal.

Prices: From $3 to $6 for Intelligentsia Coffee, Jojo Tea, cold brews, iced drinks and lattes.

The TPG take: I rated this coffee bar highly because it's popular with cruise guests and is surrounded by inviting hangout areas. Plus, the option to adult-ify your caffeine with a shot of alcohol is a fun, very Virgin option.

virgin cruise bar menu

The Grounds Club is surrounded by cozy seating areas and a communal table with outlets for your laptop. It's a great place to chat with friends, work on your Instagram influencer status or check your work email — though the latter is seriously frowned upon.

Best drink: The Angeleno is a popular choice for iced coffee lovers; it's made with espresso, vanilla and ice — shaken, not stirred. My vote for a Scarlet Lady-inspired option would be hot chocolate with a shot of Bailey's. It's a little bit playful and a little bit naughty, which is totally the vibe of this ship.

Pink Agave Bar

virgin cruise bar menu

Vibe: The tiny bar in this elevated Mexican restaurant is less of a destination than a waiting area, but you'll definitely want to order a cocktail to pair with your meal at Pink Agave. However, the ship has the largest collection of mezcal and tequila at sea, so if you're a fan, this is where you want to order.

Prices: Spiked aqua fresca $9, tequila $9 to $83, mezcal $9 to $47 and signature cocktails $11 to $16.

virgin cruise bar menu

The TPG take: Whether you pony up to the bar or come for dinner, Pink Agave's bar menu is the most unique on board. If you can't score a reservation, come on down for a drink. I would rate this bar higher for its incredible tequila and mezcal menu, but it's not a stand-alone venue, so the bar area can be loud and crowded during dinner service.

Best drink: Hop on the latest foodie trend and order the It's Like Crickets in Here drink – with real crunchy crickets on top. The drink itself blends mezcal with ancho reyes and citrus. If that grosses you out as it does me, the off-menu flavored margaritas are delicious.

Richard's Rooftop Bar

virgin cruise bar menu

Vibe: Yes, Scarlet Lady has a keycard-access-only exclusive outdoor lounge for the rockstar set (that is, guests booked into Rockstar Suites). The all-white design with iridescent windbreaker walls adds to the VIP feel, and from 5 to 6 p.m., Champagne flows freely to everyone cool enough to have access.

Prices: Cocktails $10 to $13, beer and cider $5 to $9, wine and Champagne by the glass $7 to $65, coffee $3 to $5.

virgin cruise bar menu

The TPG take: I should've spent more time lounging in the hot tub or reclining on day beds on this uncrowded sun terrace. The bar will serve whatever drink you like but don't ruin the vibe by ordering something in a can. Only a select few can access this top-deck hideaway, and I know it's elitist, but if you can rock that VIP status, you should definitely do it.

Best drink: Free Champagne during evening happy hours, of course!

Related: Bubbly, please: You can order Champagne anywhere onboard this cruise by shaking your phone

virgin cruise bar menu

Vibe: The name says it all — everything in this bar is red. It's hard to find, though, as it's tucked away in the back room of the Razzle Dazzle restaurant.

Prices: Signature cocktails range from $11 to $17, beers from $6 to $9 and wines by the glass from $7 to $15.

The TPG take: The bar and its drinks are a little screwball, which pairs nicely with Razzle Dazzle's whimsical vibe. It could be a fun cocktail bar, but the Red Bar mainly serves diners eating at the restaurant or those who arrived early for their reservation. The all-red decor and diner-style seating simply aren't that inviting, so it's not a destination bar where you'd want to hang out.

Best drink: The popcorn old-fashioned is a mix of Buffalo Trace bourbon, fig, agave and Angostura bitters, topped with a handful of popcorn and served in a red-and-white-striped container that resembles an old-school popcorn bag.

The Aquatic Club Bar

virgin cruise bar menu

Vibe: Every ship has to have a bar by the main pool area, and the Aquatic Club is Scarlet Lady's version. Enjoy your sea time, knowing the refreshing beers and pina coladas are close at hand.

Prices: Cocktails (fresh and frozen) run $11 to $13, beers $5 to $9, and nonalcoholic drinks $5 to $6.

The TPG take: Scarlet Lady's pool bar is nothing special — the same as all cruise ship pool bars. It runs the middle of the pack for being a necessary service that provides well for the sun worshippers and pool dippers on those busy-with-relaxation sea days.

Best drink: If you want to feel self-righteous while sipping a frozen umbrella drink, order the skinny pina, made with Bacardi rum, coconut milk, lime and Kelvin Slush Co. pina colada mix that's USDA organic, non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free and kosher.

Gym & Tonic

virgin cruise bar menu

Vibe: What's billed as a post-workout bar is really a pool bar with a side of smoothies, fresh juices and "reset cocktails" claiming to offer hydration and cleansing. We won't tell if you choose to ditch your green juice for a skinny pina instead.

Prices: Juices cost from $7 to $10, and smoothies and signature cocktails are $11 to $13.

The TPG take: We actually wandered around the gym, confusedly looking for the bar (and not wanting to ask a fitness instructor where to find a cocktail at noon). The Gym & Tonic Bar is near the fitness center but it's directly adjacent to a multi-person hot tub. A juice bar is a great idea, and a smoothie was refreshing after a booty burn class, but some signage would help.

Best drink: The In the Tropics smoothie is both delicious and bright magenta, so it looks excellent in all your photos.

Related: Detox and retox: I tried 6 of Virgin Voyages' free fitness classes, and here's how it went

The Athletic Club Bar

virgin cruise bar menu

Vibe: You read that right – it's another gym-themed bar on Scarlet Lady. This one is at the back of the ship, across from some lounge seating and the net (literally strong netting strung over the sea and The Dock many decks below). So where's the Athletic Club? Right around the corner – where an enclosed sports court, alfresco boxing ring and workout stations cater to exhibitionists showing off their muscles.

Prices: Smoothies $10 to $11, elixirs and energy drinks $5 to $9, cocktails $9 to $13, many things in cans (seltzers, cocktails, wine, beer, sports drinks) $5 to $13.

The TPG take: The Athletic Club really shines during the first-night pajama party, where cruisers for real put on sleepwear and dance in the dark. Beyond that event, the bar seemed mainly used for early-evening or sunset meetups and was pretty quiet. Or maybe you really need that beer after a round of basketball?

Best drink: Yaya kombucha – because what other cruise line serves kombucha at its alfresco sunset bar?

The Loose Cannon

virgin cruise bar menu

Vibe: This nautically themed bar is yet another of Virgin's hide-and-seek bars. The wooden bar with its ship's bell and octopus decor seems like it was stolen from the top deck of a clipper ship and transplanted indoors on Scarlet Lady, next to the Social Club game room. In real life, it's the hot spot for daytime trivia.

Prices: Signature cocktails $9 to $13, beer $6 to $9, wines by the glass $7 to $11. You can also get groups of shots to serve four or five people for $35 to $45.

The TPG take: After stopping by the Loose Cannon several times and never seeing anyone there, we asked a crew member when it was happening. He said that people come for trivia – and no other time unless they're popping by to grab a soda or beer to go with their hot dog and wings from the Social Club Diner next door. So if you like the "nauti" vibe, put on your thinking cap and show up for the daytime mind-benders.

Best drink: Perhaps a Red Bull will give you some extra oomph for that competitive trivia. Taking shots will guarantee you a last-place finish.

Draught Haus

virgin cruise bar menu

Vibe: The bros would come here for beer and shots if the industrial-styled Draught Haus weren't hidden in a corner of the ship's atrium where nothing much happens – except perhaps on Scarlet Night.

Prices: Beer (on tap, in cans or in bottles) $5 to $15, shots and shot-tails $5 to $8, boiler makers $9 to $15.

The TPG take: Confession: We never got to try out the Draught Haus because 6 p.m. was just too early for shots, and when we returned at 11 p.m., it was already closed. That said, we never saw anyone drinking here, so I'm not sure when and if this bar gets traffic.

virgin cruise bar menu

Best drink: Virgin's custom beer is Stray the Course, crafted by the Wynwood Brewing Company. If I drank beer, I'd start with that one since you can only find it on board Virgin Voyages' ships. However, you might have to be OK with drinking alone if you don't want to take your drink to go.

Bottom line

Scarlet Lady has a bar for every occasion, from poolside refreshment to after-dinner fun with your squad.

If you like to try out creative cocktails, you'll definitely want to work your way around the ship and try out all the bars on board. If you're a social drinker, sign up for the ship's Grog Walk, a popular extra-fee pub crawl, complete with games and activities to get to know your fellow cruisers and the ship's Happenings cast.

Cool Cruiser

Hi Everyone,

If you're staying in a Rockstar Suite (not mega) on @VirginVoyages Scarlet Lady, then you get to choose what free mini bar items are stocked in your cabin. We've put together this leaflet showing what free packages you can choose.

just message your Rockstar Agent and let them know which package you want.

Be careful with that Johnnie Walker!

We noticed that it was the one bottle on our mini bar that we hadn’t seen listed on the official list from Virgin… so I checked on Rockstar chat and they told us it indeed wasn’t part of the spirit package but was chargeable at $65!

So just to confirm, the mini bar in the suites is fuly stocked with chargeable items above and beyond the free package? I think David's Rock Star suite video showed a full set of spirits & mixers even though he chose the Bubbles On Us package?

Disney-daft

We were told the Johnnie Walker was included when we chose our package on the phone but when we arrived it was singled out when being shown our room as not included.

We knew we weren't going to drink all the included alcohol anyway so no point questioning for us but it definitely seemed odd to provide one bottle of spirits that wasn't included. Interestingly we were told our mixers weren't included as well but we did believe these were.

We also had a fridge full of wine/champagne which was also pointed out as not being included though this was pretty obvious anyway as we had chosen the spirits package so didn't even consider that it could have been.

Hopefully these little things will all be worked out soon enough 🙂

You might want to recheck the bubbles package - we had four bottles of bubbly - supposed to be a honey moscato, Chandon, prosecco and Moët but instead of Chandon we got an extra bottle of Moët!  Wendy

Lucky you Wendy!! Hope you had a fab time!

Hi Paul, Yes you are correct.... All the spirits you saw in the video were additional cost items. Actually, I think they put the spirits/mixers in the room by mistake, because we had to chase up on our Bubbles package.

I'm glad that they stocked it though, because it looked amazing!

Cheers for commenting, David

So we have to choose one bottle of alcohol?  Or choose a wines package? I was under the impression it would be stocked once with everything.

This is incorrect, this thread is very dated.  Yes you get everything.  See the newer discussions.

Ultimate cruise guide to Virgin Voyages restaurants and food on board

W hen Virgin Voyages splashed onto the cruise scene in 2020, it promised to shake up the industry. Richard Branson's cruise line seemed like it was full of hot air, but when I sailed, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it lives up to the hype, especially when it comes to Virgin Voyages' food options and restaurants on board.

Virgin Voyages' dining is in a class of its own. It's rare that a non-luxury (read: not all-inclusive) cruise line has such a wide range of complimentary food. In fact, passengers can dine at every single onboard restaurant for free — something you won't find on other mainstream ships. (The only exception is a dinner theater-style dining experience, which takes place in the nightclub on Resilient Lady .)

Another dining element that makes Virgin unique is that its ships don't have buffets. Instead, they have food court areas that house several counters and kiosks. Some are walk-up-and-order options, while others will send waiters to your table to ask what you'd like.

The variety is also impressive. Virgin Voyages' restaurant menus feature a range of cuisines, including Italian, Mexican and Korean, plus vegan options and even a bit of molecular gastronomy. And don't even get me started on quality; it rivals what you'd find at any upscale shoreside restaurant that requires you to "know a guy" in order to snag a reservation.

Here's everything you need to know about each place where you can grab a bite on board.

Note: Dining at all restaurants is included in Virgin Voyages' cruise fares unless otherwise noted. There are extra-fee "Treat Yourself" menu items available at most restaurants; items and prices vary. Specialty coffee, tea and alcohol also cost extra. Virgin operates on a bar tab system for drinks, rather than offering drink packages. All restaurants are available on all of the line's ships unless otherwise noted.

Restaurants on Virgin Voyages

Razzle dazzle.

Brunch and dinner

Vegetarians, rejoice. Razzle Dazzle — named for the confusing black-and-white paint style found on World War I ships — is the veggie-forward brainchild of Eric Kim Haugen, a judge on Food Network's "Big Restaurant Bet." Offering brunch and dinner, the restaurant features menus with creative choices for cruisers who stay away from meat.

For brunch, try the avocado toast with sriracha, watermelon radish, finger lime and toasted seeds; the nutty gazpacho with cucumbers, peppers, marcona almonds and roasted garlic croutons; and the Impossible burger with poblano salsa, paprika veganaise, avocado and fries. (You can substitute a salad, but the fries are delicious and cutely served in a vessel designed to look like a crushed black Solo cup.)

For dinner, explore options like avocado green goddess salad, and fried green tomatoes and okra with chili-lime spice and chili-herb sauce as starters. Consider Nashville hot cauliflower with plant-based ranch sauce and beet-stuffed pierogi as mains. There are also not-so-secret meat and fish dishes on the menu, including snapper, slow-cooked lamb shank and an extra-charge seafood boil for $50.

Dinner only

What would a trendy ship be without a Mexican restaurant? You enter Pink Agave through a lit-glass archway to find a dark and swanky space that feels a bit like something out of old Miami. The eatery offers upscale Mexican fare with a mezcal-heavy drink menu, all designed by famed chef and Phoenix food scene legend Silvana Salcido Esparza of the Barrio Cafe.

The selections are divided into three sizes: small plates, medium plates and large plates. Start simple, and try the absolutely out-of-this-world guacamole. Then, move on to the black bean soup and chicken enchiladas while you wait for the cochinita pibil (marinated smoked pork with sour orange habanero pico de gallo).

Or, instead, opt for dishes like grilled corn with spicy aioli and lime, seared shrimp with mole and new potatoes, a vegan roasted corn- and russet potato-stuffed poblano pepper or roasted duck with mole and smoked yam puree.

Extra Virgin

Extra Virgin, Resilient Lady's Italian restaurant, is a cozy space with a slightly upscale feel. Make sure to show up hungry because, in true Italian style, there are five courses: antipasto, affettati misti (an Italian cured meat platter), secondo, pasta and dessert.

You won't want to miss the braised miniature meatballs; they're delightful, complemented by smoked mozzarella, tomato sauce and pancetta. Follow them up with the affettati misti cheese board of Parmesan, Romano and Gorgonzola and an order of vegetarian Brussels sprouts with polenta, chiles and hazelnuts. The potato gnocchi with mushrooms, spinach and truffle butter sauce is simply magical.

For dessert, waiters bring an affogato cart to each table, offering ice cream topped with espresso. There's also an extensive drink list with various wines and cocktails, including the ever-popular Aperol spritz.

Gunbae is a Korean barbecue restaurant created by renowned New York City chef Sohui Kim. Tables can accommodate six to eight people with seating in circular booths, each of which surrounds a central grill where waiters cook your food right in front of you.

Options include small bites like nori rice crisps, seaweed salad, kimchi and mung bean pancakes, and a mixed seafood corn dog; bowls that feature rice or noodles mixed with vegetables or kimchi stew with pork belly; and mains that consist of grilled items like a mushroom and seasonal veggie combo, squid and octopus with shrimp, marinated beef short ribs and a chef's combo of short ribs, pork belly and shrimp.

Soft serve in sikhye (a sweet flavor made with malt and rice) and black sesame varieties is also offered with black sesame granola, miniature marshmallows and miso caramel for dessert.

While you enjoy your starters — a series of small bowls of seaweed-style salad that everyone receives — your waiter will lead you in drinking games, complete with complimentary sake. Other specialty drinks are available for a fee. You can also pay to purchase elevated items, such as wagyu beef, which is delicious and comes with a $45 surcharge.

Test Kitchen

Test Kitchen is a lablike restaurant that focuses on presentation with some molecular gastronomy elements mixed in. The two menus, which alternate to provide different experiences on each voyage, were designed by chef Matt Lambert of New York City's The Musket Room.

Menus consist of just a few simple items like corn, salmon, beetroot, choice of shrimp or lamb, asparagus and strawberry — with a dish prepared around each. Examples include cornbread with spreadable garlic and onion-corn custard; sugar-marinated salmon with cucumbers; beetroot ravioli with pesto and cashews; lamb and eggplant with zucchini or shrimp tagliatelle pasta with jumbo shrimp and tomatoes in lobster broth; asparagus sorbet with a sauce made of egg yolk, cream and Champagne, topped with ginger; and a strawberry dessert.

Vegetarian substitutions are also available.

For seasoned cruisers missing a more traditional main dining room experience, The Wake hits closest to the mark, offering a 1960s steakhouse vibe. Meat and seafood are on the menus for both brunch and dinner, although some dishes carry an extra charge.

For brunch, check out the brioche French toast with caramelized bananas, toasted pecans and whipped creme fraiche, as well as the avocado Benedict. Other menu options might include clam chowder, fennel and citrus salad, poached shrimp, steak and eggs, and other Benedicts featuring soft-shell crab and crispy pork belly.

For dinner, expect dishes like clam chowder, corn custard and black bean salad, and roasted bone marrow as starters; crispy polenta, shrimp and grits, roasted salmon, chicken, filet mignon and lamb chops for mains; and sides of roasted mushrooms with butter, asparagus, creamed spinach, french fries and more.

For an extra fee, cruisers can also purchase a tomahawk steak for $75 or items from the restaurant's raw bar.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

If you're looking for other casual options or grab-and-go fare, The Galley is for you. Designed to mimic a food court, The Galley is the closest thing Virgin's ships have to a buffet , minus the self-serve setup (excluding the prepackaged grab-and-go items). You'll either belly up to one of several counters preparing selections like sushi from Bento Baby, salads from The Daily Mix and tacos from Let's Taco Bout It or sit down so a member of the waitstaff can come to you to take your order.

Want breakfast all day? Your go-to will be Diner & Dash, which will cook up made-to-order eggs and omelets with bacon and other trimmings. Craving a noodle bowl, burgers, a panini, a for-fee specialty coffee or a dessert that's as gorgeous as it is delectable? You'll find all of that, respectively, in The Galley's Noodle Around, Burger Bar, Hot Off the Press, Grounds Club Too and The Sweet Side.

Room service

$5 per delivery; breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks

For a nominal per-delivery fee, room service can be ordered to your cabin 24 hours a day via the Virgin Voyages app or by calling the ship's room service number from your in-room phone.

Breakfast is available daily from 5 to 11 a.m. and includes items like scrambled eggs, frittatas, stuffed French toast, fruit, cereal, baked goods and yogurt.

The rest of the time (11 to 5 a.m.), passengers can choose from a range of starters, mains, desserts and snacks that might include chicken noodle soup, beet hummus, a charcuterie and cheese plate, roasted cauliflower steak, a cheddar cheeseburger, roasted bass, roasted chicken breast, grilled New York strip, cake pops, cheesecake, popcorn, gummy bears and chocolate-covered pretzels.

Drinks are also available, and they're charged at the same prices as they are elsewhere on board.

'Another Rose'

$50 per person; dinner only

Resilient Lady's only for-fee dining option is a dinner theater show called "Another Rose," which takes up residence in The Manor nightclub on a couple of nights each cruise. For $50 per person, passengers can choose from one of three seating options: balcony, floor or floor near the stage. For that price, they receive a 90-minute show that unfolds all around them as they indulge in a four-course set meal (including three drinks).

The menu offers cruisers two appetizers (sweet potato chaat with tamarind, cilantro-mint chutney, yogurt and pomegranate seeds; and a tuna bomb with avocado green goddess dressing, spicy soy and semolina puri), a main course (a choice of pan-roasted sea bass with moilee sauce, basmati rice grit and roasted okra; or braised short rib with Kashmir chili-coconut sauce, basmati rice grit and scallions) and a dessert — the world's tiniest piece of cheesecake.

There's also a vegetarian menu available.

The Pizza Place

Lunch and dinner

This late-night haunt is perfect for ordering a pie or two after some dancing and drinks. The pies are slightly larger than a personal size, and they come in varieties like a classic version with tomato sauce and mozzarella, chicken pesto with red onions and fresh tomatoes, a white pie with three kinds of cheese, pepperoni and a vegan option with "cheese," black pepper and arugula.

However, the best by a mile is the white truffle with egg — a pie with mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, cracked black pepper and truffle oil topped with a runny egg.

The Social Club

Lunch, dinner and snacks

The Social Club, found near the ships' board game area and arcade, doles out free popcorn, soft pretzels, hot dogs, fudge, cake pops, cereal bars, Swedish fish, gummy bears, saltwater taffy and other candy that's enough to keep you on a sugar high for days.

The atmosphere is a bit diner-esque, evoking the setting of a high school date. It's a great place to order yourself a milkshake, with or without alcohol. (The latter costs extra.)

The Dock House and The Dock

Other great options for a light meal or between-meal snacks include small plates or grab-and-go sandwiches and salads from The Dock House and The Dock. At night, snag a drink and complimentary evening mezze plates here.

Sun Club Cafe

This outdoor walk-up window overlooking the pool deck offers yummy bowls with a base of cauliflower rice or mixed greens and a choice of chicken, salmon poke and tuna. Diners can also opt for oyster mushroom or barbecue beef rib bao bun sandwiches or dips like maple carrot.

Grounds Club

The Grounds Club is primarily a coffee shop where cruisers can purchase extra-fee specialty coffee drinks and teas. However, the cafe also serves free finger foods and pastries like cookies and muffins throughout the day.

Lick Me Till ... Ice Cream

The ship's cheekily named Lick Me Till ... Ice Cream offers free scoops in flavors like espresso chip, butter pecan, key lime pie, raspberry beet and, of course, vanilla. Cones include classic, as well as chocolate and red velvet options.

Is all food on Virgin Voyages free?

All food on Virgin Voyages' ships is free, with two exceptions. The first are "Treat Yourself" items, which show up on most restaurant menus and vary in price. The second is "Another Rose," a for-fee dinner theater experience in The Manor nightclub on Resilient Lady; the cost is $50 per person. Otherwise, all food — even the line's delicious ice cream — is included in the price of the cruise fare.

Do the menus change on Virgin Voyages?

Menus do not change daily in the restaurants on Virgin Voyages' ships. However, Test Kitchen does have two menus that alternate throughout each sailing, so you could eat there twice and not repeat a meal.

Otherwise, all menu items stay the same, but there are enough restaurants and enough variety to cater to cruisers whose palates are easily bored.

Is there a buffet on Virgin Voyages?

Virgin Voyages doesn't have a buffet in a traditional sense. What it does have is a buffetlike food court area that's divided up into several different restaurants that offer counter service. Either walk up and select something premade like boxed sushi, salads or desserts, or place an order for diner fare, burgers, noodle bowls, paninis and more.

What's interesting is that, for some of the eateries, you choose a table and order from a menu when a member of the waitstaff appears. At others, you can sidle right up to the counter and place your order yourself.

Do I need reservations for Virgin Voyages restaurants?

If you're planning to eat at Razzle Dazzle, Pink Agave, Extra Virgin, Gunbae, Test Kitchen or The Wake, you'll need to make reservations on the cruise line's app to guarantee a seat. Reservations are also required for "Another Rose."

Recommended Fodor’s Video

1. gusto beach creativo.

A romantic setting, ocean breezes, and a creative Italian menu make this the one of the most popular restaurants in Sámara. By day, rustic wooden tables are shaded by white sails strung between palms; by night, diners bask in the glow of white globe lamps and light-festooned trees. You can sit under a covered area or out on the sand. The soundtrack is trendy, and the food is good too. Gusto starts the morning at 8 with great espresso and croissants; the rest of the day, there are salads, burgers, Italian fries sprinkled with Parmesan and pepper, and, of course, pizzas. Service is efficient and executed with style. Menu prices do not include the obligatory 25% tax and service.

  • Tuna tartare
  • Toes-in-the-sand dining

2. Mama Gui

Located at Giada Hotel, poolside tables and ultrasophisticated cuisine make this Italian restaurant the best dining spot in Samara. Chef Gigio Palazzo prepares dishes with fresh local seafood, meat from sustainable farms, and organic-hydroponic produce. Start your experience with in-house cured pancetta with goat cheese, followed by mains like grass-fed tenderloin, organic duck breast, or homemade pork sausage. All breads, pastas, and pizzas are made from scratch, including the gluten-free favorites. Desserts are prepared fresh each day. The walls are enlivened by white fabrics and vibrant tropical-bird wallpaper in the cool interior. The attentive chef makes frequent appearances in the dining room and his enthusiasm is contagious. Service is polished and smooth. The restaurant is small and open for dinner from 5 to 11 daily.

  • Imported Italian ingredients
  • Homemade pasta and savory sauces
  • Gluten-free pasta

3. bohemia café.

Take a beach break and stop at this funky open-air café for a smoothie or espresso, and stay for a panini or avocado toast—just make sure to get here before the freshly baked bread runs out. The seats may be unconventional (think swings and couches) but the food is pure delight.

  • Spicy panini
  • "Bohemian" smoothie
  • Strong coffee

4. Di Mare Di Vino

An ample selection of good Italian food, including crispy pizzas, decadent pastas, generous salads, and a lengthy Italian wine list (available by the glass, too), makes this sidewalk trattoria a good spot for lunch or dinner. Tuna carpaccio is a lighter option, or try the insalata caprese, with fresh basil. There's also a selection of local tico dishes and seafood. Unlike the checkered tablecloths you'd find elsewhere, here you have glass tabletops showcasing shells or plain wooden tables by the pool. Save room for a delicious mint-chocolate panna cotta.

  • Poolside dining

5. El Lagarto Steakhouse and Seafood

El Lagarto serves up fresh, local seafood and high-quality meat, grilled to perfection on a massive, open-air, wood-fired barbecue. Sink your teeth into juicy tenderloin, lamb chops, mahimahi, prawns, tuna, mussels, chicken breast stuffed with mushrooms and cheese, portobello mushrooms, or a whole grilled lobster. You won't find any barbecue sauce here; everything is simply brushed with extra-virgin olive oil and seasoned with a bit of garlic, salt, and pepper to complement the flavor of the food. Dinners include grilled vegetables and potatoes; salad is à la carte. There's also a kids' menu, an ample wine list, and an extensive cocktail selection, not to mention banana splits. The restaurant is open for dinner only, though it opens at 3 pm for cocktails. Tax and service are not included on the menu prices, so expect to pay 25% more than advertised.

  • Banana splits
  • Dry-rubbed baby back ribs
  • Specialty cocktails

6. Samara Natural Centre

This health hub in the heart of Samara has everything to make your vacation green and full of goodness. A juice bar, falafel stand, fitness center, and health-food store are just a few of the offerings. You can grab baked goods, fruits and veggies, jams, cheeses, and plenty of gluten-free and vegan goodies to go.

Bohemia Café  in Sámara has a beach vibe surrounded by beauty and is undoubtedly the perfect place to eat and enjoy the tranquility of the whole area. The cafe serves excellent fresh, healthy food and coffee.

Frederico, the owner, is a charming and friendly soul. The incredible hospitality enhances a visit to this local café, often bringing out an inviting and relaxed atmosphere.

This little cafe offers homemade granola, healthy salads, yummy juices, strong coffee, crepes, paninis, and abundant vegan options. My favorite brunch meal is actually called “The Brunch,” which comes with two eggs, homemade bread, potato gems, and fruit. It was delicious! Their coffee is also really strong!

Poke Bowl at Rosa in Samara, Costa rica

  • Location: Nex to the Pali Supermarket in the open-air dining area
  • Average Price: $28 USD for the main dishes
  • Come here for: grilled meat,   burgers, and seafood
  • Takes reservations: yes

Set back off the street away from the city’s traffic,  Rosa  is a laid-back restaurant right in front of a vibrant market area with local vendors and entertaining musicians – a pleasant view to watch as you enjoy your meal.

Rosa offers an excellent European dining experience in Sámara. It is a small lovely place with open-air indoor and outdoor dining.

The menu includes tasty diverse delicacies from grilled meats to pan-fried seafood accompanied by a selection of delicious wines and cocktails. This is a great place to try out the meat combo or strictly vegan choices. Be warned, though, the menu and specials often change, so come prepared to eat something not mentioned here!

During our visit, the host, who also appeared to be the owner, recommended we try the tapas to start. We had the tuna poke bowl and meat platter for our mains – both were delicious. Unfortunately, we didn’t hang around for dessert and instead when next door to Sweeties by Celia (mentioned lower on this list!)

The burger at Rosa Restuarant in Samara, Costa Rica

Other options on the menu include; steak with shrimps, large portions of meaty country-style ribs, grilled squid, Chicken Parmesan, ceviche, filet steak with pepper sauce, steak with Roquefort sauce. I really want to try the ribs – they look so yummy!

Rosa offers superb casual dining for families and special date nights for couples. The owner, Adeline, is a charismatic and efficient host with a team of attentive staff serving excellent food, great live music, value for money, and a lovely ambiance to go with it.

Rosa is open for lunch from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm every day except Sunday, Monday, and Thursday and for dinner from 5:30 pm to 9 pm every day except Sunday.

3. La Dolce Vita – Best Beach Club and Sunset Spot

Bailey in a swing at La Dolce Vita

  • Location: Right on the beach in Samara
  • Average Price: from $16 USD for main dishes
  • Come here for: Italian/Mediterranean

Strategically located only a few meters from the center of Sámara Beach,  La Dolce Vita , owned by Italians, offers a beachside restaurant with magnificent views and an electric atmosphere. The beach club is my favorite in Sámara, and I love coming with friends for a lively afternoon or romantic night.

The restaurant has tasty meals with cozy indoor lounge options as well as outdoor seating that’s complete with large umbrellas, pillows, and a blanket on the beach.

My fiancé and I decided to try dinner at this restaurant on my last visit. We had a small pizza with olives and a quinoa cake for the starter. Then, I tried the day’s special, seared blackened tuna with mixed veggies and a cocktail. Afterward, we had a fantastic limoncello!

The food was fresh, with plenty of gluten-free menu options too. I liked the presentation, Instagram-worthy, by the way. It was a perfect meal for a perfect holiday mood with a gorgeous setting and beach view.

Cocktails and drinks at La Dolce Vita

During the day, La Dolce Vita is an excellent place for drinks, and I highly suggest waiting around till golden hour to enjoy happy hour and the sunset. There’s plenty of space to relax and hang out in the comfy bean bag beds on the beach with a magnificent ocean view.

The atmosphere is equally beautiful at night, with soft lighting in the tree branches and a warm romantic ambiance. It’s a wonderful spot for a romantic dinner in Sámara.

La Dolce Vita is a must-visit if you’re  staying in Sámara to get the best Italian/international cuisines – I loved it!

4. Falafel Cafe – Best vegetarian

A big plate at Falafel Cafe in Samara, Costa Rica

  • Location: Calle Central
  • Average Price: $4 to $9 USD
  • Come here for: Healthy fast food/vegetarian

Falafel Cafe  is the ideal place to try Middle Eastern foods – with arguably the best hummus, kebab, and falafel in Sámara. This trendy café is co-owned by an Israeli, Elias Nassif, and Italian, David Rubini, and is located in a beautiful courtyard close to the beach.

Falafel Cafe serves fast food, takeaway, and casual dining. The menu is simple, offering homemade pita tortillas and hummus wraps with an optional salad; falafel wraps that include five small balls of fried; mashed garbanzo beans with herbs; Shepherd-styled El Samareño kebab meat and tzatziki yogurt sauce, with olives, cucumber, and garlic on the side. Other items on the menu include sandwich combos, fruit cocktails, and coffee.

We went there for a quick lunch and had the falafel burger, the Sámara Sandwich, a chocolate banana muffin, and pineapple and ginger juice. The food was super fresh and served in reasonable portions.

Falafel Cafe is a lovely little spot with delightful, fresh food, a nice seating area, and friendly staff. It’s an ideal spot for lunch in Sámara worth stopping by.

Falafel Cafe is open from 11 am to 12 am every day.

5. Sabor de la Montaña – Best restaurant with a view

View from Sabor de la Montaña

  • Location: In the foothills, a 50-minute drive outside of Sámara
  • Average Price: $12 USD
  • Come here for: Food with a breathtaking view!

If you’re looking for a food adventure in the mountains, this is it. Located in the outskirts of Sámara and surrounded by highlands,  Sabor de la Montaña  is the place to wine and dine with the a view. They serve local dishes tastefully made and combined with European cuisines.

Enjoy the tasty rice and beans, steak, pork chops, chicken Casados, plantains, and some seafood. To me, though, nothing beats their fresh wood-fired pizza. The dough is freshly prepared, and they actually pre-cook the base before adding the toppings to ensure a crispy base. The large pizza is big enough for two people, and it comes with quality ingredients.

The pizza at Sabor de la Montaña, Samara

Sabor de la Montaña is a casual spot and has freshly prepared food. The view from the restaurant is so beautiful, and I loved the tranquility.

If you want to visit Sabor de la Montaña, it is around a  50-minute drive from Sámara  and is up in the mountains. It’s certainly a restaurant in Sámara for the more adventurous.

Sabor de la Montaña is open from 9 am to 8 pm Wednesday to Sunday and closed Monday and Tuesday.

Steak at MamaGui in Samara, Costa Rica

  • Location: near the Catholic Church
  • Average Price: $25 USD upwards for the main dishes
  • Come here for: Fine dining Italian and Mediterranean food
  • Takes reservations: Yes

MamaGui  is a small contemporary Italian restaurant in the heart of Sámara that serves Italian and Mediterranean dishes, tasty cocktails, and a range of European wines. Come here for sophisticated dining to enjoy the delicately prepared meals.

The owner/chef, Gigio Palazzo, does great dish combinations such as the marlin sashimi, tagliatelle pasta with red snapper, and more. You’ll also find delicious steak, pork chops, and grilled squid.

We started our visit off with a Hendricks Dry Martini and the exceptional Montepulciano D’Abruzzo, a perfect choice for our main dish – a deliciously made Cavatelli al ragù de salsiccia di agnello.

Gigio does great food combinations between flavor and quantity. You’ve got to try their pizza too, definitely the best I’ve tasted while on holiday.

The bar has a large drinks menu with pros crafting fabulous, tasty, and artful garnished cocktails that add to the entire fine dining experience.

The ambiance and stylish low-key decor creates a calm, romantic atmosphere to enjoy the artistically crafted varied menu. MamaGui offers the finest, charming and vibrant dining experience in Playa Sámara.

7. Gusto Beach Sámara – Best daytime beach club with amazing pizza

Pizza and pasta at Gusto Beach Sámara

  • Location: On Sámara Beach
  • Average Price: $25 USD for main dishes
  • Come here for: Delcious food while at the beach

Right on the beach, this restaurant is an excellent spot with stunning views!  Gusto Beach Sámara  is one of my favorite restaurants on Sámara Beach. It has consistent quality food from breakfast to dinner.

During the day, you can laze around on their lounge chairs and order food and cocktails all day. So long as you get one meal, the high-quality beach chairs complete with an umbrella are yours to enjoy. That’s one of the reasons I visit so often!

The menu has a touch of Italian flavors combined with Costa Rican local dishes. The portions are pretty generous. They have the yummiest smoothies, focaccia Caprese, chocolate croissants, pizza, chips and guacamole, sea bass ceviche, and fresh seafood dishes.

Food and Bailey at Gusto Beach, Sámara

We had lunch – started with a lovely ginger lemonade and red sangria and then finished with pasta and pizza! Try the Aperol spritz, banana smoothie, and focaccia caprese. The mozzarella dissolves in your mouth like smooth, warm chocolate.

The entertainment brings the place to life with great music. It’s the best place to make new friends, by the way, and the ambiance is something else! Simply impeccable.

Overall, Gusto is one of the finest beach restaurants in Sámara! The staff is friendly and attentive, giving you a perfect beach dining experience.

Gusto Beach Sámara is open from 8 am to 11 pm every day.

8. L’Authentique – Best tapas and wine bar

L'Authentique starter in Samara, Costa Rica

  • Location: in front of Hotel Floe De Coco, Playa Sámara (one of the best hotels in Samara )
  • Average Price: $14 to $18 USD for main dishes
  • Come here for: French cuisines, tapas, and wine.

L’ Authentique  is home away from home. The ambiance, food, and service team welcome you as if you were long-lost family or friends returning after a long trip. Julien and Eva are the charming, ever jovial couple. They are attentive, efficient, and super friendly.

This French-owned tapas restaurant and wine bar is famous in Sámara for the authentic imported cheeses, paired perfectly with charcuterie with a selection of tasty European/ South American wines. The food portions are small for the price, but the quality is unmatched.

We tried the day’s special – Assiette (assorted cured meats), with a variety of cheese and chilled Argentinian wine. Unforgettable! We also tried their French bread (baguettes) and camembert cheese, which were exceptionally delicious and genuinely French.

You can try the tapas platter, which is sooo huge! I bet it’s delicious too. We saw this from a family of six seated across our table and almost changed our order. I bet they enjoyed themselves big time.

The restaurant has this cute vintage van for couples where you can have a nicely done dinner table with an assortment of starters and chilled wine – gaze into each other’s eyes as you watch the sun go down. It’s such a beautiful romantic setting. Everything about L’Authentique is breathtaking!

L’Authentique is open from 5 pm to 11 pm every day, and you can  view their menu here .

9. Marisqueria Colochos – Best affordable seafood

Whole grilled fish at Marisqueria Colochos

  • Location: near Rancho de la Playa Sámara
  • Average Price: $12 to $20 USD
  • Come here for: Affordable food.

Marisqueria Colochos  is located away from the main street, a little bit after Casa Esmeralda. The place is rustic but well maintained – don’t be put off by the lackluster, the food is out of this world!

The local “Soda” has a few dining tables and a surfboard at the entrance. The place looks and feels more homely than the regular beachfront restaurants and is much cheaper than most eateries in Sámara!

I loved the fresh fish ceviche, served with crackers. The seafood dishes/platters/seafood soup is great too – try their lobster and grilled squid, very fresh and yummy. They also have chicken Casado served with a great choice of chilled wine.

Make your reservations on time because everything is done by the owners, from prepping the dishes to cooking and serving. It may take quite a chunk of your time, so don’t be in a hurry when you check in to eat, but it’s all worth the wait. Of course, the typical Casado meals come fast and cheap.

The friendly prices attract more visitors every day. Overall, the food, drinks, and service are excellent and friendly, all under $20 USD.

At Marisqueria Colochos, lunch is served from 11 am to 3 pm, then dinner from 5:30 pm to 9 pm except on Friday when they stay open late until 12 am.

Must-do Activities While You’re in Samara

A turlte while snorkeling at Isla Chora

Werner Sauter Biological Reserve – Werner Sauter Biological Reserve is a small private reserve located not far from Sámara. It’s the best place to visit near Sámara if you want to see a huge range of wildlife including monkeys, birds , and reptiles. Tours to Werner Sauter cost around $50 USD per person and are guided.  This specific tour  includes pick-up from town as well as a 2.5 hour guided hike through the reserve.

Go snorkeling at Isla Chora – Isla Chora is a small island that is part of the reef that protects Sámara from heavy ocean swells. It’s a beautiful place to visit for the secluded beaches, but the highlight is without a doubt the snorkeling.  Kayaking tours from Sámara are top-rated and involve a short 30-minute paddle out to Isla Chora before relaxing on the beach and snorkeling the reef.  The tour we did  was excellent and our guide, Luis, was such a fun and knowledgeable person.

Turtle nesting tour – Turtles are one of the highlights of Costa Rican wildlife. Thousands of turtles visit the Pacific coast every month to lay eggs on the pristine beaches , and visitors can see both adults laying eggs and babies hatching.  This specific tour  visits one of three beaches depending on the time of year to see turtles.

Macaw Recovery Network – The Macaw Recovery Network is a center of volunteers and wildlife experts whose mission is to recover endangered Neotropical parrot populations. Although you can find many macaws in their care, they are focused on the Great Green Macaw – a critically endangered species. You can   do this guided tour with an expert and see the macaws in their natural habitat.

Where to Stay in Sámara, Costa Rica

Hotel Entre Dos Aguas

Sámara is one of those towns with a huge variety of places to stay. From budget backpacker hostels to luxury hotels, there are places to stay in all budget ranges.

Villas Kalimba – $$$

For luxury travelers or those in families, I love  Villas Kalimba . This place is spectacular and offers a fitness center, swimming pool, and restaurant. On top of that, it’s located right on the beach, and the villas are surrounded by tropical gardens.

Their two-bedroom villas come with a full kitchen and everything you need for a great holiday. Rates begin at $703 USD for a one-night stay. You can check availability and book online here on Booking.com .

Hotel Entre Dos Aguas – $$

If you consider yourself a mid-range traveler, then I have a great choice for you that caters to couples. Hotel Entre Dos Aguas is a rustic hotel with simple amenities on a beautiful property. Perfect for those who want a true Costa Rican stay.

All of the rooms have private showers, and some of the rooms have a terrace. You can check availability and book online here on Booking.com .

Las Mariposas – $

If you’re on a budget, there are lots of options, but not many of them are good.  Las Mariposas  is my top choice, with its location only 100 meters from the beach. The hostel has a great atmosphere for meeting other travelers and is suited to the social backpacker.

Rates begin at $12 USD/night for a bed in a shared dorm. You can  book this place on Hostelworld  or  Booking.com .

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

We tried La dolce vita- while the food was good the prices were exorbitant- for two main dishes (no specials), two cocktails, one app, and two natural juices- it cost us $188.00 that did not include tip- each drink although not listed was $20.00 a piece and the average meal was 32 a piece. As a matter of fact there was another couple who ordered two shots of Hendricks and they told the proprietor that they were mad… lol they said the shots were more than the cost of the bottle. All in all we would not recommend this restaurant- we have had some great meals here thus far and have paid between $40 and $80 for four meals, with an app and a drink.

The era of large cruise ship visits to Bar Harbor might soon end

Unless another court ruling overturns Bar Harbor’s new cruise ship limits, 2025 is expected to be the last year that large passenger ships drop anchor in Frenchman Bay.

But it could be sooner than that — or may have already passed — if a judge decides that the town must enforce the new limits this year.

“Large” can be a relative term when the smallest cruise ships that visit Bar Harbor are more than 200 feet long and can accommodate 100 paid passengers. Most of the ships that visit Bar Harbor, Maine’s busiest cruise ship port, are closer to 1,000 feet long and carry between 1,800 and 4,000 passengers per voyage.

It is these larger ships that effectively will be banned from visiting the tourist destination when the town’s new daily limit of 1,000 passengers per day  starts being enforced. Of Bar Harbor’s current 104 cruise ship visits scheduled for this year, 70 would be prohibited if the daily limit was to go into effect before May 2, when the first large ship of the year, carrying nearly 2,400 passengers, is expected to arrive.

Of the ships that will still be allowed, most carry approximately 100 to 200 passengers and rarely do two of them appear in Bar Harbor on the same day. As a result, the town most likely will get only a couple hundred passengers ashore on cruise ship days — below the daily 1,000-passenger limit and far below the 2,000 to 5,000 passengers that have sometimes come ashore when multiple ships are in town at the same time.

virgin cruise bar menu

But when the new limit will be fully enforced is a heated subject of debate  in Bar Harbor, where the council says it will honor reservations made by large ships before voters approved the new limits on Nov. 8, 2022. Charles Sidman , a local resident who spearheaded the referendum vote, is taking the town to court to try to legally compel it to enforce the cap now.

In addition, a coalition of local businesses is challenging the new daily limit in federal court, arguing that it runs counter to federal maritime law and is unfairly onerous. A federal judge upheld the new daily limit  in February, but the business group has said it intends to appeal the decision.

Regardless of which entity prevails in court, the number of annual cruise ship visits to Bar Harbor, which gets millions of visitors each year who arrive each year by car or bus, already is declining and likely will never regain the volume of recent years.

Outside the COVID-19 pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 — when the global cruise ship industry ground to a halt and no ships came to Bar Harbor  — the town recently has averaged roughly 150 visits each year, all between late April and early November, and received an annual total between 200,000 and 250,000 passengers. This year, even if large ships are allowed, the town will get fewer than 200,000 passengers for the first time — apart from 2020 and 2021 — since 2016.

virgin cruise bar menu

After cruise ships first started showing up sporadically off Bar Harbor in the 1980s, their numbers jumped above 50 per year in 2001 and then above 100 per year in 2008. The town’s first year with more than 100,000 cruise ship passengers was in 2004, when it welcomed 87 ships into Frenchman Bay.

Along the way, the town has worked with local cruise industry officials to find ways to manage the flow of passengers to and from the downtown waterfront. It moved anchorage points in the bay behind the Porcupine Islands to make the ships less visually imposing from downtown, and tried making adjustments to how tour buses come and go from West Street to relieve traffic congestion, even as the number of visits consistently increased over time.

But as complaints continued to come in, the town decided in 2021 — when annual visits to Acadia National Park soared to more than 4 million  — to conduct a survey to ask local people what they thought about local cruise ship traffic. More than half  of the survey’s respondents said the volume of cruise ship visits was hurting the town.

With the writing on the wall, both town officials and local cruise industry officials began discussing how to reduce the number  of large ships that visit each year.

Together, they came up with a plan to impose a daily passenger cap of 3,800 passengers for May, June, September and October, and a daily cap of 3,500 for July and August. They also agreed on monthly caps of 30,000 passengers in May and June, 40,000 in July and August, and 65,000 in September and October.

But Sidman’s 2022 citizens’ petition effort, which led to the November referendum that year, derailed that plan.

For now, with Bar Harbor officials saying they plan to honor large cruise ship reservations made prior to the November 8, 2022 vote, the number of visits scheduled for 2025 stands at 18, all of which are large ships that together would bring nearly 57,000 ship passengers to town between late August and early October. The Regal Princess, which carries 3,560 passengers, would be the final large ship to visit Bar Harbor, on Oct. 28, 2025.

All large ship reservation requests that have come in since residents approved the daily 1,000-passenger cap have been denied, according to town officials.
