Michigan has some of the country's most historic and beloved lighthouses. Grand Haven has two of them. Built in 1839, two lighthouses on the south pier of the town , both painted red, have remained beacons of the city for nearly two centuries.

The three towns that make up the Tri-Cities of Michigan include Grand Haven , Ferrysburg , and Spring Lake . Since 2004, the Tri-Cities Historical Museum has been bringing the history of the region to life within the historic Akeley Building in downtown Grand Haven.

The museum is home to both a permanent collection, as well as space for rotating exhibits. The first floor of the Tri-Cities Historical Museum takes visitors back through time to visit the communities of the Odawa, Ojibwa, and Potawatomie Native Americans. It also weaves through the histories of the fur traders, pioneers, and the Victorian era in Grand Haven.

A second house of the museum is in the former Grand Trunk Railroad Depot , which dates to 1870. This historic spot is not far from where fur trader Rix Robinson had established his trading post in the early 19th century.

Running along the banks of the Grand River, the pocket-sized, 1.5-mile Lighthouse Connector Park runs from Chinook Pier to the end of South Pier. It features a boardwalk, along with public art installations, and runs along the river overlooking the Grand Haven South Pierhead Outer Lighthouse .

The Chinook Pier is an interesting spot to check out, as well, with its many stores and restaurants. It also has an 18-hole mini golf course and a small waterfront playground. You can rent surf boards along the pier, as well as paddleboards and skateboards.

What was once the original home of the Tri-Cities Museum has transitioned to become a historical landmark, as well as an addition to the museum, which now sits down the street on Washington Avenue. Its location is fairly close to the original location of the first fur trading post in what would become Grand Haven in 1821.

The railroad depot building was built in 1870 and was integral to the development and prosperity of Grand Haven, as it shuttled passengers and freight around the state. The last train left the station in 1958. Nearly 15 years later, the building emerged as a museum dedicated to the history of Grand Haven.

If you haven't gotten your fix of railroad history, you can stroll over to the Pere Marquette 1223, which is not very far from the old rail depot. The Pere Marquette 1223 is a historic steam locomotive that is permanently stationed in Grand Haven. It is one of two remaining 2-8-4 "Berkshire" locomotives, which are among the most beautiful and classically designed steam locomotives in history.

The locomotive was built in 1941 and was used to transport freight trains between Toledo and Chicago before and after World War II. It was pulled from service in 1951 and sat in storage for quite a while. Eventually the locomotive was moved to Detroit to be displayed at the state fairgrounds and, finally, was moved to Grand Haven in 1981 where she has been sitting ever since.

Today the locomotive sits on display in Grand Haven and is an absolute must for train enthusiasts who come to marvel at her pristine condition and decades of important history.

If you haven't gotten your fix of green space in Grand Haven, Escanaba Park is another wonderful waterfront option to explore.

Escanaba Memorial Park was constructed to commemorate the United States Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba. The vessel was based out of Grand Haven from 1932 to 1942 and was used for many rescue missions out on the Great Lakes. It was also utilized in World War II before eventually being struck by a torpedo in the North Atlantic in 1943.

Today the park is used as a commemoration for the ship and the crew that were lost after the 1943 attack. Visitors can still see the original wooden mast that soars above the park. The boardwalk passes through Escanaba Park, so those strolling along the river will be sure to cross through it, as well.

The dunes of Michigan are famous in many lake towns across the state, but the dunes at the Kitchel Lindquist Dunes Preserve are among the most beautiful. Stretching across 115 acres, the protected area features massive natural dunes , thick forest, and rich wetlands.

The area was founded in 1971 with 60 acres and has grown since then to encompass the 115 acres of today. It sits next to the Grand River and is one of the best examples of dune development in the country, with dunes being featured through the park at all their many stages of development.

Visitors can explore the two trails that weave through the dunes and then run along the river shoreline. Bring binoculars to try to catch a glimpse of the many hawks, bald eagles, herring gulls, great blue herons, and other birds in the sky.

Downtown Grand Haven has a slew of charming shops and galleries, but Gallery Uptown is perhaps its most famous and most popular. The oldest artist-operated gallery in the state , Gallery Uptown uses its platform to showcase artists from the area.

The gallery features art from a variety of different media, from watercolor and oil to pastel, watercolor, glasswork, jewelry, photography, and beyond. Every month, the gallery hosts a themed show, which is open to the public in the Walburg Gallery.

Known for its opportunities for fun in the sun, you’ll also find many festivals throughout the spring and summer. The Kite Festival kicks off the spring festivals. Summer brings the Grand Haven Art Fair and a chance to enjoy the murals, sculptures, and outdoor art. Grand Haven has the designation of Coast Guard City, USA, so you’ll even find the city hosting a festival honoring the men and women of the Coast Guard. Foodies will find the autumn’s salmon festival to be a great time to visit where they can sample the bounty of the Great Lakes.

Things To Do In Grand Haven

Grand Haven offers a quintessential beach experience featuring many outdoor activities. Some cultural activities, like the annual art fair and the Musical Fountain Show, bring the artistic experience to the outdoors.

Ride The Harbor Trolley

The Harbor Trolley runs seven days a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day, starting at 11 a.m. Beginning at the Chinook Pier, the historic trolley provides a narration of the area’s history. Go back in time and discover Grand Haven’s past. The trolley travels along the waterfront and downtown areas. Check here for a map of the trolley’s path. In addition to the narration, this is a great way to get around town without your car. Passengers 19 to 59 years old ride for $1.50. The ride costs 75 cents for seniors and those under 18. Those under two ride free.

Pro Tip: You can flag the trolley down anywhere on the route. If you’re within three-quarters of a mile of the trolley route, you can call (616) 842-3200 during business hours and they’ll pick you up.

Experience The Musical Fountain Show

At dusk, head on over to the Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium to watch the Musical Fountain . Throughout the summer, the fountain features a nightly 25-minute synchronized water and light show, where the music takes a variety of styles from Disney and Star Wars to Jimmy Buffet. All shows have free admission.

Pro Tip: During May and September, they also have shows on Friday and Saturday nights.

Walk Grand Haven Boardwalk Pier And Lighthouse

Grand Haven Boardwalk Pier is a popular fishing spot and an excellent place to watch the sunset. Enjoy a walk along the boardwalk that outlines the Grand River Channel and the pier. Here is the perfect spot for photographing the bright red Grand Haven lighthouses.

The two lights on the south pier connect by a lighted catwalk that also adjoins them to the Grand Haven Boardwalk and the shore. Built in 1839, Grand Haven Lighthouse has a tower light and the fog house light. Unfortunately, the tower and fog house aren’t open for tours.

Pro Tip: Use North Shore Drive in Ferrysburg to access the north pier for an alternate view of the lighthouses.

Spend A Day At The Beach

If you’re going to visit Grand Haven, you’ll want to spend some time at the beach. Grand Haven features three beaches depending on your mood and budget. Grand Haven City Beach , situated between the beach at Grand Haven State Park on Harbor Drive and the beachfront restaurant, The Noto’s at the Bilmar, doesn’t require entrance fees or passes. They have restrooms and limited free parking. They do allow dogs on leashes at this beach during restricted times.

North Beach Park is an Ottawa County Park with associated fees; however, these fees are less than the State Park fees. During the summer months, dogs aren’t allowed on the beach. This park features dune stairs and a deck with panoramic scenic views of Lake Michigan.

Grand Haven State Park is a popular beach and an excellent place for sunbathing and sand volleyball. For lighthouse enthusiasts, the lights are at the end of the pier, and this beach has the perfect view.

Pro Tip: The Harbor Transit Beach Express Bus allows you to enjoy the beach without the parking hassles. The service runs every 15 minutes from noon until 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The cost is one dollar per person roundtrip. The service picks you up at one of four parking locations in the area and drops you off at the city beach drop-off point.

Explore The Tri-Cities Historical Museum

With a mission of creating local history connections, the Tri-Cities Historical Museum offers a variety of exhibits throughout the community, in addition to those within the museum building. For example, you’ll find outreach exhibits in the Ottawa County Courthouse and within the Grand Haven City Hall.

This museum has free admission.

Pro Tip: The Tri-Cities Historical Museum offers a variety of walking tours throughout the summer. These include the Historic Tavern Tour, Cemetery Tour, and Downtown Walking Tours.

Grand Haven has over 40 registered charter fishing boats. These boat captains know all the details of how to find those secret fishing holes. Then, once you’ve caught your limit, you can have your catch for dinner. To find a fishing excursion that meets your needs, check out charter fishing in Grand Haven.

Pro Tip: Have the crew clean your catch and take it to one of the local restaurants participating in the Catch and Cook program. Kirby House is one of my favorite restaurants. While they participate in Catch and Cook, landlubbers will also enjoy their prime rib dinners.

Best Restaurants In Grand Haven

During my visits to Grand Haven, I kept returning to the same restaurants, but I forced myself to try some new spots on my last visit and loved my discoveries as much as my favorites. Here are some new-to-me places that I enjoyed.

The Toasted Pickle

The name is what first attracted me to The Toasted Pickle . It’s fun and intriguing, but the food is what keeps me going back. The Crusty Cuban at the Toasted Pickle was a standout. It featured house pulled pork, sweet and spicy pickles, and smoked bacon with tangy aioli on a hoagie roll. Accompany your sandwich with some house-made truffle fries with a side of aioli for a special treat. Skip the fountain drinks and try one of their fresh-squeezed lemonades that you can choose to flavor with another fruit. I chose the pomegranate as a refreshing alternative to my usual iced tea.

The Pump House Frozen Yogurt Bar

If you’re on the way to the Musical Fountain, stop by The Pump House to grab a cup of frozen yogurt to enjoy during the show. It’s just across the street from the Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium. They offer about a dozen flavors. Once you’ve made your selection, you can top it off from the myriad of topping choices from the center island.

Before you grab your ice cream, check out the complimentary digital photo booth, where you can take some snaps to remember what a fun time you had in Grand Haven and then email them to yourself for sharing later. If you can’t wait until evening for your frozen treat, get some in the afternoon, cool off on the indoor street-facing swings, and spend some time people-watching.

The Village Baker

The Village Baker sits on Michigan 104 as you go into Spring Lake from the east. Stop and pick up some treats to snack on later at the beach. They have various cookies, pastries, and loaves of bread that will work out well if you plan to make sandwiches for a picnic. The Village Baker is less than 10 minutes by car from Grand Haven and has a restaurant, so if you want to escape for a bit, this is the place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Holiday Inn Grand Haven – Spring Lake

If you prefer a national chain, then the Holiday Inn Grand Haven–Spring Lake is less than 10 minutes from the beach, but you’ll still have to drive to the beach and find a parking spot unless you get there early. The Harbor Beach Express Bus and the Harbor Trolley stop in Spring Lake if you want to avoid the parking hassle.

Grand Haven State Park Campground

Grand Haven State Park Campground is a popular 48-acre park that sits on the shores of Lake Michigan. This campground offers camping right on the beach, so you can wake up and run in for a swim. In addition, the park connects to the boardwalk, making it easy to walk a few blocks to downtown Grand Haven.

Pro Tip: Michigan requires recreation passports to enter state parks. You may purchase annual or daily passes at the entrance to a state park. The park’s track chair is available for those with mobility challenges to explore the park at no charge. The off-road, electronic chairs are available on a first come, first served basis.

Grand Haven is a lovely community with a fun and active downtown.

It's a beautiful place to visit. The addition of new shops has added to the draw of visiting the area. I highly recommend getting away and visiting this beautiful, peaceful spot.

5 Must Visit Beaches in Michigan

D riving north in the summer, my dad is at the wheel, and I’m riding shotgun. We are heading to one of the most beautiful beaches in Michigan- my grandparents’ home rests near it – it’s almost as far north as one can go in Michigan. 

We are heading to the Upper Peninsula – the Keweenaw. 

On US-41, my dad rolls the windows down, making my red hair take flight. My freckled arm rests on the door, and my fingers thread through the wind. I close my eyes. 

All that wind whooshing around inside the car makes it too loud to talk. 

Which is okay. 

Because it’s nice just to be together with our car slicing a path through the dense pine trees. 

We are heading to what might be the tiniest beach in Michigan which sits at the foot of my grandparents’ house. 

An old wooden dock stretches from that rocky little beach and, from a weathered rope, swings a single black inner tube.

Because this is our beach, and because inside that beach house, my grandmother is baking the most delicate and perfectly sweet blueberry pie, this is the most perfect beach in all of Michigan.

This beach is my secret. But I can share some others that are almost as nice. 

The truth is that all through The Great Lakes State, there are beaches. Beautiful, sandy beaches. Here are a few of my family’s favorites…

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Along M-109 (endearingly known as Dune Highway), Sleeping Bear Dunes dips her sandy toes into the sparkling cobalt blue water of Lake Michigan. Swimmers splash in the cool waters up and down the coast of this National Lakeshore. This 65-mile beach makes up the majority of what is called The Leelanau Peninsula, the tiny “finger” that juts out of Michigan’s lower peninsula into Lake Michigan. This beach is generally calm, and its shallow water makes it one of the best places for families with young children. 

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is known for its massive coastal dunes – some are over 450 feet high! A view from the top of the dunes provides visitors with a perfect place to view Lake Michigan. It is possible to hike the dunes, but keep in mind that while the hiking trail through the dunes, while only 3.5 miles around, is made up entirely of sand. Bring sturdy shoes to avoid raw feet, and don’t forget to drink plenty of water, especially on hot summer days.

The Philip A Hart Visitor’s Center is a great place to stop. Every newcomer to the area should put it at the top of their itinerary. There, visitors will learn the rich history of this special place.

All along these miles of shoreline are charming towns like Glen Arbor and Leland. Both towns are in the heart of Michigan’s Wine Country, known for its Rieslings. They are part of what is called The Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail , which includes 20 award-winning wineries. 

If chance or careful planning brings visitors in late June or early July, be ready to drive 30 minutes to nearby Traverse City. June means cherry time in Traverse City , and no one who loves summertime, Michigan, small-town charm, or cherries should miss it. 500,000 people swarm this sweet city every June and July for the Traverse City Cherry Festival . Do check the website for dates, as they change each year.

Where to Stay By Sleeping Bears Dunes

Empire Lakeshore Inn provides easy access to the best sites. It is a 3-minute walk to The Philip A Hart Visitor’s Center and a 4-mile drive to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The modestly priced inn (rooms are around $100 per night) is an excellent value. The light and airy decor, along with the fragrant gardens, will quickly put visitors in vacation mode.

Grand Haven State Park Beach

Located on the west coast of Michigan, this hopping public beach is known for its picturesque Grand Haven pier and red lighthouse. Don’t miss the photo opportunities on the pier that the spectacular sunsets over Lake Michigan provide. It’s free and happens every evening! 

Grand Haven State Park Beach is made up of 48 acres of soft sand. It’s one of Michigan’s best beaches for sunbathing, swimming, and beach volleyball. There are 7 amazing beach volleyball courts to check out here. Basketball fans won’t feel left out because there are plenty of indoor and outdoor basketball courts in Grand Haven. Coast Guard Park is home to a favorite outdoor basketball court near the beach and is very close to the Grand Haven Splash Pad where the little ones can extend their fun in the sun.

This state park offers many amenities for families, including a playground, a large picnic area with picnic tables, and an extensive campground (with electric hook-ups.) The park loans track chairs , which can be used to navigate the beach’s sandy shores and shallow water. 

Where to Stay At Grand Haven

 The Harbor House Inn is near the beach and within walking distance of the downtown area. Some rooms come with a fireplace and jacuzzi tub—be sure to ask! Guests will love the clean yet cozy lake house vibe. The modestly priced rooms (around $130 per night) give guests all the comfort of home in the middle of one of Michigan’s most popular beach towns.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Discover breathtaking beauty along the shores of Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore . Rent a kayak to admire the towering cliffs, colorful sandstone formations, and clear waters that Pictured Rocks is known for. It is an 18-room boutique hotel, so guests are guaranteed a unique and peaceful retreat. The rooms’ decor is rustic, yet comfortable and clean. One night costs around $150, but guests say that the service and location make the cost worth it.

Conde Nast Traveler voted Oval Beach in Saugatuck one of the top beaches in the world. It is renowned for its sugary sand and breathtaking Lake Michigan views – especially its glowy sunsets. This laid-back beach offers a public parking lot, concessions, and an inviting picnic area. Water sports are encouraged here. You will see swimmers, paddlers, skiers, boaters… you name it. Be advised – along with being at the top of many “best beaches” lists, come visitors. Lots of them.

Escape the crowds from one of Michigan’s most popular beaches and immerse yourself in nature at Saugatuck Dunes State Park . With miles of unspoiled beaches, rolling dunes, and 13 miles of hiking trails, this hidden gem offers a serene retreat for beachgoers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
