About Whale Song

Hawaii’s Big Island is home to humpback whales as they gather energy for their northward migration. Over 8,000 humpback whales congregate in Hawaii every year to breed, calve, and nurse their young. During this season, Hawaii is among the top destinations in the world for whale watching.

At Whale Song Enterprises, we offer exclusive whale watching tours aboard our luxury yacht with no more than six visitors. We offer a private sightseeing and photo experience. This guided excursion takes you on a luxury yacht in search of whales. With our hydrophone we often hear the whale's song.  As you travel the beautiful North Kohala coastline, you will be escorted by dolphins, turtles, flying fish and pilot whales as they guide you on your voyage .

We also provide tours for specific occasions such as birthdays, promotions, graduation, and retirement. Snorkeling opportunities are also available by request.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

whale tour big island hawaii

We took the four-hour tour and had plenty of time for whale watching, snorkeling and sight seeing.  Capt Tony and Bridget were terrific hosts and made the tour super enjoyable.  It was worth every penny!

whale tour big island hawaii

The snorkeling was amazing!  We had a perfect day with calm seas and great visibility.  Capt Ken is a terrific guide and was able to point out lots of marine life that we might have overlooked without his help.  Being able to rinse off with fresh water after snorkeling was a huge plus.  Five stars!

Frequently Asked Questions about Whale Watching on the Big Island

Before I get into a breakdown of the top whale-watching tours on the Big Island, I wanted to cover some frequently asked questions!

Where is the best whale watching on the Big Island?

The best place to go whale watching on the Big Island is off the Kohala coast, on the northwest end of the island. This area typically sees 2-3 times as many whales as other areas on the Big Island. However, most whale watching tours will leave from the Kailua-Kona area, and you can still spot plenty of whales from the Kona coast! You can learn more about the different ares of the Big Island in my guide: Where to Stay on the Big Island .

What month is best for whale watching in Hawaii?

There is no specific month per say, as whale watching season runs from November – April when the whales are migrating from Alaska. However, whale sightings typically peak in December and January ! This is also high season in Hawaii, so be prepared for crowds!

Is whale watching better in Hilo or Kona?

While there are plenty of whale sightings in Hilo, Kona is the better option! Most tours leave from the Kona side of the Big Island. Plus, during whale season, the Hilo side sees an insane amount of rain, which puts a damper on whale watching tours!

Which Hawaiian Island has the most whale sightings?

During the 2023 season, a count was conducted on the same day in February across the Hawaiian islands. Oahu saw 467, the Big Island saw 68, Kauai saw 273, and Maui saw 313.

How much does a whale watching tour cost?

The average cost of a whale watching tour on the Big Island is around $120. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a tour that is less than $100!

What time of day is best for whale watching?

The morning is the best time of day for whale watching on the Big Island! In fact, the amount of whales seen around 8:00am is over 50% more than the amount seen at noon. In addition, ocean conditions are typically calmer in the morning, making your ride more enjoyable and making it easier to spot whales!

What types of whales can I see on the Big Island?

The most common type of whale you will see during whale season on the Big Island is the humpback whale. During the winter months, humpback whales migrate from the frigid Alaskan waters to the warmer waters of Hawaii! Aside from humpbacks, you might also see pilot whales and false killers whales year round on the Big Island.

Pssst: Planning a trip to the Big Island?? Make sure to check out my ultimate One Week Big Island Itinerary to help plan your vacation!

Are there any regulations or guidelines for whale watching in Hawaii?

Absolutely! State and federal regulations like the Marine Mammal Protection Act exist to protect humpback whales in Hawaii. The most important regulation prohibits anyone from approaching humpback whales within 100 yards. This applies to tour boat operators, personal water crafts, and swimmers.

Are whale sightings guaranteed on these tours?

Of course, no company can guarantee you will see whales on their tour! They are wild animals after all. However, most tours offer an opportunity to come on another tour if you don’t see whales on your first. Plus, most of these tours include a whale watching guide who will help you spot them!

Can you see whales from the shore?

Absolutely! You’ll have the best chance of seeing whales from the shore on the Kohala Coast. Places like Lapakahi State Historical Park and Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site are both free to enter and a great places to watch for whales! Again, go in the morning for your best chance.

Top 5 Whale Watching Cruises on the Big Island of Hawaii: Cost, Duration, and More

If you don’t want to do a bunch of research, take my word for it and book this top-rated whale watching Cruise! For $120 per person, you get 3.5 hours of cruise time on a luxurious, comfortable boat.

In the winter months, you can choose from a 7:00am, 11:00am, or 3:30pm departure time. The best part is, Hawaiian Adventures Kona also runs in the off-season from July through November and will search for pilot whales, false killer whales, whale sharks, spinner dolphins, and more during this time!

Afternoon Whale Watching with Hang Loose Boat Tours

  • Price: Starting at $109 per person
  • Duration: 2.5-3 hours
  • TripAdvisor Rating: 4.5/5 stars ⭐
  • Includes : Bottled Water & Snacks
  • Pick Up Location: 74-425 Kealakehe Pkwy

If you are looking to experience a smaller group tour for your whale watching cruise, Hang Loose Boat Tours is a good option! Their 24-person catamarans offer a more intimate experience than other whale watching cruises. However, a smaller boat will not handle the waves as well. In addition, this tour leaves at 12:30pm, when the seas tend to be rougher than the mornings. So if you are prone to sea sickness, I would opt for another tour.

Adventurous Captain Zodiac Whale Watching Cruise

  • Price: Starting at $127 per person
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Includes : Sodas, fruit juices, bottled water and snacks
  • Pick Up Location: 74-425 Kealakehe Pkwy #16

With 5 stars on TripAdvisor, this whale watching tour is great for those looking for a little bit of adventure! The tour takes place on a small, zodiac raft that only fits 16 passengers. Because of this, this tour isn’t recommended for pregnant people or those with back/neck problems. However, it does allow you to cover a lot of ground (water I should say), and the boat doesn’t rock as much as traditional tour boats.

Depending on where the whales are spotted, you might even get a chance to see coastal caves and volcanic lava tubes on this tour! Plus, the boat has a hydrophone on board, which allows you to hear the whales singing underwater. The tour is typically offered at 8:00am and 11:45am – I recommend the earlier one!

Wake Up with Whales By Ocean Sports Cruises

  • Price: Starting at $120 per person
  • Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Includes : Beer, wine and soft drinks
  • Pick Up Location: 69-275 Waikōloa Beach Dr

As the name suggests, this whale watching cruise leaves bright and early at 8:00am from the Kohala Coast! The Kohala Coast is one of the best places to see whales on the Big Island. This tour takes place on a beautiful catamaran, which really elevates the experience! They also have hydrophones on board, so you can hear the whales’ songs!

This tour is highly-rated on TripAdvisor; however, it is a bit shorter than the other whale watching tours in this guide. Oceans Sports Cruises does offer a no-whale guarantee policy. Plus, beer and wine are included 🙂

Whale Watching with Body Glove Cruises

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • TripAdvisor Rating: 4/5 stars ⭐
  • Includes : Snacks and light refreshments
  • Pick Up Location: Kailua Pier

For those looking for a comfortable and convenient whale watching tour, this is a great option! The Whale Watching with Body Glove cruise takes place on a large, double-decker catamaran. This boat has a large shaded sun deck and cushioned seats, so it’s perfect for guests who want to be more comfortable. The boat is also wheelchair accessible!

In addition to comfort, this tour leaves directly from downtown Kona at the Kailua Pier. So if you are staying in Kona, you don’t have to worry about journeying far for pick up! The tour offers free snacks and light refreshments like coffee, soda, water, and tea, plus alcohol is available for purchase!

This whale watching cruise also has a no-whale guarantee policy! However, the only time slot is at 1:00pm, so you may not have as much luck as on a morning cruise!

Final Thoughts

As you can see, whale watching is one of the most adventurous things you can do while visiting the Big Island. If you are visiting the Big Island between December and April, you need to add one of these tours to your itinerary! You won’t regret it 🙂

Also, if animals are your things, make sure to check out my other Big Island blog posts! The Big Island is home to some amazing marine life. I highly recommend a night dive with manta rays and looking for dolphins as you kayak to Captain Cook ! The Big Island also has some incredible snorkeling where you can see all kinds of underwater critters!

The 3 Best Whale Watching Tours on Big Island

When you think of the perfect vacation on Big Island, you might picture luaus, beautiful sandy beaches, and ukuleles, but you may not be aware of the incredible opportunities for whale watching tours on Big Island of Hawaii.

During the winter months of December through April, over a dozen distinct species of whales, from melon-headed whales, false killer whales and orcas to sperm whales, pilot whales and beaked whales migrate to the warmer, shallower waters around Big Island to mate or give birth. But despite this varied collection of species, the most sighted is the humpback whale, as large groups travel from the frigid and dangerous waters of Alaska to the calmer, safer sub-tropical Pacific.

whale watching gold coast, sea word, humpback-2613448.jpg

This perfectly coincides with tourists and adventure seekers looking to escape the colder months of their hometowns in the sun and fun of the Hawaiian Islands.

There are quite a few great spots for whale watching on Big Island , but the best places are the coasts along Kohala, North Kohala and North Kona, all of which offer plenty of opportunities to see the beautiful creatures in three specific ways: lounging on the beach, swimming or snorkeling, and chartering a boat for a whale watching tour.

Tip from a local : The winter months are the rainy season in Hawaii. Typically, all the islands have similar weather patterns. The east side (windward) of each island is usually rainy and cooler, while the west side (leeward) is usually hot and dry. While there is potential to spot whales in Hilo Bay on the east side, this is one of the rainiest spots on Big Island. So, if you’re looking to enjoy the beaches and abundant sunshine while you keep a lookout for whales, you’re much better off on the west side in towns like Kona. Just be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen.

So, the biggest question to ask yourself when planning a whale watching excursion is: how close and personal do you want the whales to get?

Here is a quick overview of the options for viewing sites and snorkeling locations but keep reading for recommendations for the best whale watching tours on Big Island.

Want and little more information about whale watching or just watch from shore? Here are our favorite places to watch whales on the Big Island of Hawaii

If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, then there are four great parks and beaches with a high likelihood of spotting these amazing creatures.

whale, humpback, humpback whale-1118876.jpg

  • Lapakahi State Historical Park, located on the northwestern edge of the island, rises to an elevation of about 100’ above sea level, providing a perfect overlook to spot whales in the distance.
  • Kapa’a Beach Park is located very close to Lapakahi State Park, and while it is 20’ lower in elevation, it does provide shaded picnic pavilions, so it might be a better choice for extended whale watching.
  • Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, located a little further south than the previous two, is the best place to spot whales, as its name translates to “hill of the whale”.
  • If you’d prefer to stay a bit closer to Kona, the Pu’u Kuili cinder cone overlooking Kua Bay rises to 342’ above sea level, providing incredible views of the ocean.

If you want to get a bit closer to the action and you’d like to get your feet wet with a little swimming and snorkeling, there are many fantastic beach options all around the island, but not really any specific recommendations in this list simply because swimming and snorkeling are less about whale watching and more about listening to their beautiful song. Sound travels much further underwater, so if you’re planning to swim or snorkel anyway, you may be treated to a serenade. During whale season, the majority of safe and accessible beaches on the west side of the island, in particular, can offer plenty of opportunities to hear the whales singing without the need to enter deep and dangerous waters.

Now, on to the main point. Boat tours really are the best way to ensure an unforgettable whale watching experience. There are many charter options for whale watching in Kona and in Hilo, but most of them offer essentially the same (wonderful) experience. So, here are the three best charter companies that offer some unique features and stand above the rest.

Captain Zodiac Kona Whale Watching Tour

Captain Zodiac is the best tour option for those wanting to get as close as possible to the whales, while maintaining the legally required 100 feet of distance to ensure the safety of the beautiful creatures and, of course, the passengers. Their 16-person Zodiac rafts are smaller than many of the other charter companies, giving every passenger a front-row view. However, this 3-hour tour can be a bit rough with such a small boat, so Captain Zodiac caters to the more adventurous whale watchers.

Where: They are located just south of the Kona International Airport on the southern side of Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park.

Hours of Operation: Their tours run every day except Wednesday from January to the end of March.

Tour Details: The smaller, faster Zodiac rafts allow more time to explore the coastline along the way, with the possibility of getting up close to lava tubes and sea caves. But because of the rough nature of the boat ride, they do not allow pregnant women or anyone with neck or back problems.

Cost: $75 for children ages 4-12 and $105 for anyone 13 and older.

Perks: With on-board hydrophones, you can listen to the hauntingly beautiful whale song during the tour. They also offer sunset tours aboard 24-foot Zodiac rafts to combine two of Hawaii’s most beautiful sights.

Captain Dan McSweeney’s Whale Watch Learning Adventures

Captain Dan McSweeney has studied whales for nearly four decades and has worked with National Geographic and Discovery Channel . He personally conducts and narrates every tour to ensure that his guests not only have an amazing experience but also learn about whales and ocean conservation. This is Kona’s only full-time whale watching tour company, unlike most other charters that offer various other snorkeling and sightseeing tour options.

Where: They are also located just south of the Kona International Airport on the southern side of Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park, in the same harbor as Captain Zodiac.

Hours of Operation: Their 3-hour tours run daily at 7 AM and 11 AM during whale season between January to the end of April.

Tour Details: Captain Dan pilots “Lady Ann” on every tour. The boat has ample seating, sunny and shaded areas and welcomes guests of all ages. While other tours offer more rugged adventures, Captain Dan focuses more on an educational and leisurely cruise experience coupled with unforgettable whale sightings.

Cost: $125 + tax per child (infant to 11 years) and $135 + tax per adult.

Perks: Captain Dan guarantees that guests will see whales during his tours, using his decades of experience studying whale migration habits to guide him to whale sanctuaries that other charters may not know.

Contact Info: (808) 322-0028; https://www.ilovewhales.com/index.html

Hilo Ocean Adventures Humpback Whale Exploration

If you would prefer to stay on the east side of the island, Hilo Ocean Adventures does offer a unique whale watching tour, so you do not have to make the long (but beautiful) drive to Kona. The Humpback Whale Exploration tour is a bit shorter than others at 2 hours, but there are waterfalls and cliffs along the Hamakua coast to make it a great option for those equally interested in basking in the beautiful Hawaiian scenery while keeping one eye out for whales.

Where: They are located near the Hilo International Airport and just around the corner from the majority of the hotels and resorts of Hilo.

Hours of Operation: They offer three different tours at 8:30 AM, 11 AM and 1:30 PM every day between December and April.

Our Koholā (Whale) Watching Tours

We can’t emphasize enough how much location matters when it comes to viewing Humpback whales in Hawaii. Puako is the BEST place to view whales from along the West Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Our vessel provides a smaller group setting with max of 12 to give our guests a comfortable and intimate whale viewing experience. Our staff is extremely knowledgable about the Humpback whales giving you a very educational experience while you watch. Our boat is equipped with a research grade hydrophone so you can watch and listen to these amazing creatures.

Book online now!

The Humpback Whales migrate from Alaska to Hawaii during the winter months to give birth and mate. Along our stretch of coastline the whales relax, mate and give birth to their new babies. We will cruise along the coast looking for these spectacular creatures that are known to slap the water with their fins and tails as well as breach. On special occasions our whales have been know to approach vessels to interact in what we call a “whale mugging”. Their backs can also be seen arching out of the water as they dive down giving you that iconic tail photo opportunity. As we travel the coast we will be looking for other large ocean creatures such as other whale species, Bottlenose Dolphins, Spotted Dolphins and many other creatures.

  • Check-in time: We offer 3 whale watching tours during the peak of the season, be sure to confirm when booking which start time you are on. The departure times are 7:30am, 10:00am and 12:30pm.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Wonderful experience with many sightings of the humpback whales. Matt was knowledgeable about the whales and respectful of their space. The zodiac boat provided an intimate feel.

Liquid Hawaii is our favorite tour company on the Big Island. We had used them in 2020 and upon our 2023 return booked a whale watching excursion…and what an experience! We saw so many whales and their babies breaching and jumping and putting on quite a display. But the experience of a lifetime was when a solo whale decided to pay us a visit and swam next to the Zodiac and visited with us for 15 minutes. He even sprayed our son which the locals called a “whale blessing”! We were in awe to see the whale up close and just hanging with us going from side to side under the boat. Took us quite a while to process the gift we had been given. Our captain Kieran was extremely knowledgeable about the whales and their behavior. Another plus is that there were only 3 family members and Kieran on the tour. I highly recommend Liquid Hawaii for a personal and fabulous experience!!

Kathleen D.

Our experience was wonderful, we saw all the hightlights the reef could offer including a turtle that swam feet from us and an octopus up close. They are amazing creatures, so beautiful and graceful. Matt’s Zodiac boat was perfect as it placed us low on the water line where we could observe numerous dolphins, who swam up to greet us. We finished our trip with a phenomonal whale sighting including breaching or jumping out of the water, it was as if they were putting on a show for us.

Additional Humpback Whale Info

Each year humpback whales visit the Hawaiian Islands during the winter months, arriving sometime in November and departing in March. While in Hawaiʻi’s waters, humpbacks don’t feed, as the primary reason for their journey is to mate and for mother whales to give birth and raise their young. Their epic voyage from Alaska to Hawaii spans approximately 3,000 miles and is one of the longest journeys taken by any land or sea animal.

Humpback whales are an endangered species, and overall populations drastically declined before their placement on the endangered species list. An increase in their population has been documented, although it is difficult to estimate an exact count of this species.

Humpback whales weigh between 25-40 tons and can reach up to 45 feet in length, and females tend to be larger than males. Most humpbacks present a dark grey coloring, while some individuals have a variable amount of white on their pectoral fins and bellies. These distinctive characteristics are used in many instances used to identify individual whales.

Feeding for humpback whales occurs in the North Pacific during the summer months, where their main priority is to build up fat stores (blubber) to live off of during their winters without food in Hawaiʻi. Humpback whales filter feed on tiny crustaceans (mainly krill and small fish) and consume up to 3,000 pounds of food per day. Adults have been known to hold their breath for up to 45 minutes, where calves must surface for air every few minutes.

Overall rating

What a great excursion. Yes, we saw whales!! Very friendly, accommodating, and organized crew. Captain Mike a true professional with a sense of humor-thank you. Very convenient beach boarding in A-Bay (Waikoloa Resor ... t), which for us was so nice not having to drive down the coast. Cheers

This boat was by far the best option for whale watching. We took my 3 year old son for his birthday, so glad we chose this one. Our captain was determined to have everyone witness all of the amazing sights of whales in t ... heir natural habitat including, breaching, Mom and baby, whale tail waves, even the smell of anchovy whale breath! Will definitely be doing this one again! This was the highlight of our trip, an unforgettable experience! Mahalo Hawaii Nautical!

Perfect whale watch!

A most enjoyable experience! Once we spotted a spout in the distance, we motored to it for a wonderful mother-baby whale show! Only recommendation would be to improve the directions to get to the check-in location on the ... beach.

Hawaii is a whale lover’s paradise. Thousands of humpback whales migrate to the Hawaiian Islands each year, seeking out their warm, protected waters for both breeding and raising their young. Getting the chance to see these beauties in person is absolutely mind-blowing and there’s no better place to do it.

Over 12 different species of whale frequent the area including sperm whales, pilot whales, and false killer whales, but the humpbacks are the true stars of the show. Whether you’re spotting them from the shoreline or on a whale watching tour, witnessing these serene creatures is truly a bucket list experience .

Here’s everything you need to know about whale watching in Hawaii – and the best island for it!

Want a tour from the best island? (Spoiler alert) we have the quick links for you here: In this article, we highlight Kai Kanani , Sail Maui , and Ultimate Whale Watch But we also cover the 7 best Maui whale watching tours if you want some more options. For other islands, use our handy Table of Contents to jump to tours by island.

What is the Best Hawaiian Island For Whale Watching?

The best Hawaiian Island for whale watching is Maui. In fact, it’s so good that we have an entire guide dedicated to whale watching on Maui .

The Great Whale Count , a volunteer effort to collect population data on whales, counted almost 600 whales off Maui’s coast on February 27th, 2023. This is just one example of the density of the whales here come peak season.

So, why is Maui so great for whale watching? The Au’au Channel draws in humpback whales every winter due to its extra warm current. This narrow swathe of sea, winding its way between the shoreline of West Maui and Lanai’s east coast, is also shallow which means that the whales are typically closer to the surface and easier to catch a glimpse of.

Don’t fret if your travels aren’t taking you to Maui. Oahu is also a great island for whale watching and there’s a chance to see whales on any of the Hawaiian Islands in the winter months.

What is the Best Time of Year to Go Whale Watching?

The best time of year to go whale watching in Hawaii is from mid-December to April . It’s even possible to spot whales from land during these months! You can technically start seeing whales in October or November, but sightings aren’t guaranteed. Peak season is from January to March and many tour operators will even guarantee sightings, meaning you can jump on a tour on a later date if you don’t see them on your original tour.

You may also be wondering if there’s a specific time of day that is best for spotting whales. We’ve learned from several marine naturalists on past tours and personal experience that you can see them at any hour during the season. We prefer heading out early to avoid the midday heat and the trade winds, which kick up in the afternoon.

Prime whale watching season also happens to coincide with the high tourist season in Hawaii. Just something to keep in mind if you’re planning to visit Hawaii in the winter .

Can You See Whales from the Shore or Do You Need to Take a Tour?

One of the most magical aspects of whale season in Hawaii is that they’re easily spotted from the shore! While Maui is known as the best island to see whales, you can see them from shore on any of the Hawaiian Islands during peak season. Luckily, whales like relatively shallow water which makes it easy to see them surface, or even breach, from your spot on the beach!

With all this in mind, there are specific places on each island that are best for whale watching from the shoreline. On Maui, whale watchers will want to stick to the leeward side of the island, along the Au’au Channel, for the best chance of seeing breaching or spouts. Anywhere from Kapalua to Wailea is a prime destination for whale watching from shore.

You can read our Maui Whale Watching Guide for our map on where to stop and see whales from the beach. Plus take a look at our Maui Travel Guide to get a sense of the island.

best Hawaiian island for whale watching - Kapalua

As the second best place among the Hawaiian Islands to go whale watching, Oahu is a great place to see whales on dry land. Spots to seek out include Turtle Bay, Pyramid Rock Beach, Sharks Cove, Halona Blowhole, and Lanai Lookout. Locations on Oahu’s North Shore are particularly great for catching a glimpse.

Some of the most notorious spots on Kauai for spotting whales are the Kilauea Lighthouse, Makahuena Point, and Kapa’a Lookout. These locations are spread out across the island which is ideal if you’re fitting whale watching into a tight schedule.

Last but not least, Hawaii’s Big Island is one of the more tricky places to see whales but it’s still possible. Make a beeline for the Four Seasons Hualalai , Kapa’a Beach Park, or the Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site for a chance to spot them from January to March.

Hawaii’s smaller and less frequented islands, like Lanai , are also ideal areas for whale watching. Pu’upehe is a great vantage point to see whales from shore on the “Pineapple Isle”.

How Much Does it Cost to Go Whale Watching?

Considering that you can see whales from the shore in Hawaii, whale watching can be completely free. Still, the best way to see these gentle giants is in their ocean habitat. Most tours are also led by a marine naturalist that gives visitors detailed information that you’ll find both interesting and memorable.

Prices for a whale watching tour can vary greatly. Tours at the very start of the season can go for as little as $50 per person with some of the larger groups. This kind of excursion can easily climb to $100 per person.

We’ve always had the most enjoyable time on rafting tours, which typically range from $65 to $150. For tours with kiddos, catamarans are ideal. Prices don’t include gratuity which is always appreciated and an added cost to keep in mind.

The Best Whale Watching Tours in Hawaii

Whale Watching excursions take off from all of the major Hawaiian Islands. If you’re planning to visit during peak whale season, set sail on any of these tours to witness whales. These are the best whale watching tours in Hawaii, by island.

Due to the devastating fires in Lahaina many of these tours will be leaving from alternative locations on the island.

Ultimate Whale Watch Ultimate Whale Watch leads rafting trips off the coast of Maui, one of our favorite ways to see the whales! This type of tour allows you to get up close and personal with these beautiful creatures, while still remaining a safe distance away from the whales. They originally operated out of Lahaina Harbor but are planning to leave from West Maui this year, starting in December.

Sail Maui Set sail on a stunning catamaran as you search for whales in style. The vessel is extremely comfortable and provides a more relaxed atmosphere for whale watching hopefuls, free from the din of a motor. Lunch and drinks are included with your tour. Sail Maui previously left from Lahaina Harbor but is now operating out of Ma’alaea Harbor , just a 10 minute drive north of Kihei.

Captain J’s Super Raft Whale Watching Tour Leaving from Port Allen on Kauai, this tour sets out by Super Raft. Although it sounds like a wild adventure, the Super Raft is surprisingly comfortable with bathrooms onboard and a cover to help protect from the sun.

Snacks and beverages are included and a hydrophone is used to catch the whales’ beautiful underwater melodies. While sightings aren’t guaranteed, the crew are experts at seeking out the whales. This tour typically goes to Poipu as whales tend to gather in the area’s calm waters.

Did you know? Whales are protected animals and it is illegal to approach them within 100 yards. But nature knows no bounds and curious whales do approach. If this happens your crew will stop the boat and allow the whales to pass on their own. This is how you can get amazing close encounters!

Kauai Zodiac Tourz This whale and dolphin watching tour leaves the Kukui’Ula Small Boat Harbor in Poipu by 25 foot Zodiac. This option is for those who are looking for a more thrilling way to see the whales. Speed is the name of the game, allowing guests to feel at one with nature, close to the water’s surface.

This is the only tour that leaves right from Poipu and can accommodate up to 14 guests. Keep in mind that there is no shade and this tour is not recommended for pregnant women or those with back or neck problems.

The Big Island

Keep in mind that whale watching season on the Big Island is typically shorter than on the other Hawaiian Islands and ranges from late December to late March.

Adventure X Ocean Tours This whale watching tour heads out into Puako Bay, known as the nursing grounds for babies and their mothers, in search of humpback whales. You may see breaching and even competition pods – males vying for a mate – on this tour! This is a 30 ft. power raft tour with a small group of up to 20 people.

This tour has high chances of close encounters and an onboard naturalist provides interesting facts for the curious. Drinks and snacks are included. They even dip a hydrophone into the water so guests can hear the whale songs. Reservations begin the first week of January and end in March.

Captain Zodiac Leaving from the Big Island’s Kona Coast, this whale watching tour takes off in a 24-foot Zodiac (a type of power raft). This kind of tour is an exhilarating experience and allows visitors to get up close and personal with the whales.

The captain is a naturalist and adheres to Federal MMPA whale viewing regulations. Only 16 passengers means that this small tour is ideal for those wanting to avoid crowds and have a more intimate experience. Dolphins and sea turtles are also regularly sighted. This tour begins in January and ends in March.

L ooking for some fun and exciting things to do in Hawaii? One of the top destinations in Hawaii is the island of Oahu , which is home to the state capital, Honolulu. Oahu is known for the world-famous Waikiki Beach and the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

Another popular destination in Hawaii is the island of Maui , which is known for its stunning beaches, waterfalls, and natural beauty. The Road to Hana Drive and the Haleakala National Park are top attractions in Maui, along with whale watching during the Winter season.

The Big Island of Hawaii is known for the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and snorkeling with the manta rays!

Visiting Hawaii is an unforgettable experience that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and outdoor adventure.

1. Visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Visiting the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a really unique and popular thing to do on the Big Island of Hawaii . The park has two active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa , with Kilauea being the most active volcano with recent eruptions.

You can drive to the Volcanoes park by yourself or take a volcano tour from Hilo . A helicopter tour is also a great way to see the volcanoes and rainforests from above, with breathtaking views of the Hawaii coastline and volcano craters.

On your visit to Hawaii Volcanoes Park, you can walk through lava fields , explore lava caves, and drive to the scenic viewpoints on Crater Rim Drive .

There are many places in the park where you can see volcanic activity, like lava flows, steam vents, and volcanic craters. The Kilauea Iki trail is a really unique hike that's about three miles long and a must-do on Big Island. In this hike, you get to walk through a dormant lava crater and a rainforest and see a really cool Thurston lava tube at the end.

The Kilauea volcano erupts within the Halemaumau Crater, and you can see the steam rising from the crater from different viewpoints in the park, like the overlook at Volcano House. Sometimes, if you stay after dark, you can see red lava glowing if there have been recent eruptions. The night sky is also perfect for stargazing in the park.

Advance reservations are not required to visit the Volcanoes Park, but you would need to pay the National Park entrance fee to visit.

2. Try Snorkeling in Kona

Snorkeling is one of the top things to do in Hawaii, especially on the Big Island . The waters around Big Island have lots of different marine life, like sea turtles, dolphins, and an abundance of other tropical fish.

Snorkeling with Manta rays is a very popular and must-do activity in any Big Island itinerary . It's an amazing opportunity to get close to these gentle giants and see their beauty and grace.

Keauhou Bay , just south of Kailua-Kona, is one of the most popular places to snorkel with manta rays. You can join a guided tour and swim with the mantas in their natural environment at night when they come up to feed on plankton near underwater lights.

Other great spots for snorkeling and diving on Big Island include Kealakekua Bay, Puako Bay, and Kahaluu Beach. At Kealakekua Bay, you can see a lot of marine life, like fish, sea turtles, and even dolphins. You can explore stunning coral reefs and see many different underwater creatures up close. You can take a boat tour to the Captain Cook Monument at Kealakekua Bay .

3. Go Whale Watching in Maui

Whale Watching in Maui is a very popular excursion in Hawaii. During the winter months, from December to May, humpback whales migrate from the cold Alaskan waters to the warm waters of Hawaii to breed and give birth. Maui is one of the best places in the world to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

The best chances of seeing whales are by taking a whale-watching tour led by experienced guides who can help you spot whales and provide you with interesting information about these gentle giants. You can choose from a variety of tour operators, with many departing from Lahaina and Ma'alaea harbors.

The best time to go whale watching in Maui is early in the morning when the waters are calm and the sun is not that harsh. However, you can also see them throughout the day. Remember that humpback whales are a protected species, so it is important to give them plenty of space and not disturb them in any way.

During your whale-watching adventure, you may witness a variety of whale behaviors, such as breaching (jumping out of the water), tail slapping, and singing. Don't forget to bring a camera and a sense of wonder as you embark on this adventure.

4. Attend a Luau

Attending a luau is a traditional Hawaiian experience that is very unique to Hawaii. There are several luaus held across the Hawaiian islands, with some of the most popular being the Old Lahaina Luau on Maui and the Polynesian Cultural Center Luau on Oahu .

A luau is a celebration of Hawaiian culture, food, and entertainment that usually occurs in the evening. The event usually starts with a lei greeting , welcoming guests with a beautiful flower lei around their necks.

The highlight of the luau is the Hawaiian feast , which typically features a kalua pig, poi, lomi salmon, and other traditional Hawaiian dishes. Guests can also enjoy a variety of tropical drinks, including mai tais and other fruity cocktails.

As you dine, you will be entertained by hula dancers who perform to the beat of live Hawaiian music . The dancers will tell stories through their movements, often depicting tales of love, nature, and other Hawaiian legends.

Attending a luau is a great way to immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture, traditions, and local cuisine and is one of the best things to do in Hawaii.

5. Drive on the Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is a scenic drive that winds along the northeastern coast of Maui, Hawaii, and is considered one of the most breathtaking drives in the world. The 52-mile-long road takes you through lush rainforests, past cascading waterfalls, and along stunning ocean vistas.

The drive can take anywhere from four hours to all day, depending on how many Road to Hana stops you explore . While the road is technically paved the entire way, it's narrow and winding and has over 600 hairpin turns and 59 bridges, most of which are one-lane bridges, so it's not for the faint of heart.

That said, the drive is well worth the effort, as it takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes you'll ever see. You'll pass by picturesque towns, villages, lush rainforests, and stunning waterfalls and streams. You'll also have the opportunity to stop at various points of interest, including botanical gardens, black-sand beaches, and historical landmarks.

Some of the most popular waterfalls on the Road to Hana include Twin Falls , Upper Waikani Falls , and Wailua Falls . These cascading waterfalls are breathtaking, and many of them are easily accessible from the road. Another highlight is the Wainapanapa black sand beach . Reservations are required to visit this very popular beach near Hana.

Another highlight of the drive is the town of Hana itself. This small, picturesque town is the endpoint of the drive, and it's well worth spending some time exploring. Here, you'll find a charming mix of local shops, restaurants, food trucks, and some of the island's most beautiful beaches, like Koki Beach and Hamoa Beach .

6. Experience Sunrise at Haleakala

Visiting the summit of Haleakala National Park in Maui for sunrise is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should not be missed if you are ever in Maui. The summit is located at an elevation of 10,023 feet, and it's the highest point on the island. To witness the sunrise from the summit, you must wake up early and make your way to the top before the sun starts to rise. Sometimes, this requires waking up at 3 AM!

Sunrise at Haleakala is so popular that you need to make advance reservations on the National Park website to enter the summit area between 3 AM and 7 AM. The drive to the summit takes about two hours from most areas of the island, so it's important to plan ahead and leave plenty of time to get there before sunrise. The road to the summit is narrow, steep, and winding, so it's important to drive carefully and be prepared for the altitude.

As the sun starts to rise, the colors of the sky begin to change, and the views become more and more breathtaking. The vast crater spreads out before you, and you can see the entire island of Maui stretching out to the horizon. The clouds below you look like a sea of cotton candy, and the sunrise's colors make everything seem glowing.

The temperature at the summit can be quite cold, so it's important to dress warmly and bring plenty of layers. You can bring blankets, jackets, and even hot drinks to keep yourself warm while you wait for the sunrise.

If you cannot get the reservations for sunrise, you can also go later in the day to see the sunset at Haleakala Summit , which is equally amazing!

7. Visit Pearl Harbor Memorial

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial is located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii and is built over the sunken remains of the USS Arizona battleship, which serves as a tomb for the 1,177 sailors who lost their lives during the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor in the year 1941. Visiting the Pearl Harbor Memorial is a powerful experience to honor the memory of the brave men and women who lost their lives.

Reservations are required to visit the Pearl Harbor Memorial. To reach the memorial, you will board a Navy shuttle boat that takes you to the memorial, which is situated in the middle of the harbor. As the boat approaches the memorial, you can see the remains of the USS Arizona just beneath the water's surface.

You can walk around and view the various exhibits showcasing that fateful day's events. It is a sobering reminder of the human cost of war. You can also take a guided tour of the USS Bowfin submarine and the USS Missouri battleship, both of which played important roles during World War II.

The Pearl Harbor Memorial is the most visited attraction in Oahu and is a short drive or cab ride from the Waikiki resort area.

8. Experience a black sand beach

Hawaii is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, including several that feature unique black sand. These beaches result from volcanic activity , and the black sand is tiny pieces of black lava rocks that have eroded over time. The stunning contrast between the black sand and the crystal-clear blue water is a sight to see.

One of Hawaii's most famous black sand beaches is Punalu'u Beach, located on the Big Island . The beach is known for its fine black sand and green sea turtles basking in the sun on the beach, adding to the beauty of the already spectacular scenery.

Another popular black sand beach is Waianapanapa Beach, located on the Road to Hana Drive in Maui . This beach features black sand and dramatic sea cliffs, and lava caves. The beach is surrounded by lush green foliage, making it a picture-perfect spot for photography.

9. Explore a Waterfall Hike

Hawaii is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world, and many of these stunning natural wonders can be accessed by hiking through lush rainforests and scenic trails.

One of Hawaii's most popular waterfall hikes is the Pipiwai trail to Waimoku Falls , located in Haleakala National Park on Maui . The trail is approximately 4 miles round trip and takes you through a unique bamboo forest and past several smaller waterfalls before reaching the 400-foot tall towering Waimoku Falls.

Another popular waterfall hike on Maui is the Twin Falls trail  on the road to Hana. The trail is relatively short, at just over 1 mile round trip, and takes you through a lush jungle to a set of twin waterfalls. The falls are surrounded by beautiful greenery and offer the perfect spot for a refreshing dip.

In Big Island, the Akaka Falls is one of the best waterfalls in the eastern Hilo region. The falls drop an impressive 442 feet into a lush, green canyon below. You take a short hike through the lush rainforest to reach the falls. The trail is well-maintained and features a series of stairs and footbridges that wind through the dense foliage. Along the way, you will see a variety of native plants and wildlife, including bamboo groves, orchids, and colorful birds.

The Manoa Falls hike is a popular trail located in the Manoa Valley on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. The hike is approximately 1.5 miles round trip and takes you through lush rainforest to the base of the stunning Manoa Falls.

10. Relax on the White Sand Beaches

Hawaii is known for its stunning beaches, with crystal-clear waters, white sands, and scenic landscapes. With so many beautiful beaches to choose from, it can be hard to decide which ones to visit.

Waikiki Beach , located on the island of Oahu , is one of the most famous beaches in the world and is known for its calm waters, white sand, and iconic views of the Diamond Head Volcano crater. You can enjoy swimming, surfing, or just lounging on the beach here.

Kaanapali Beach , located on the west coast of Maui , is a three-mile stretch of golden sand with crystal-clear waters. The beach is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding, and there are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, like Whaler's Village.

Hapuna Beach , on Big Island's Kohala Coast , is known for its white sand and turquoise waters. The beach is perfect for swimming and sunbathing and is one of the best family-friendly beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii.
