  • Your TSA Guide to Traveling with Sunscreen

The Best Travel-Size Sunscreens Perfect for Your Carry-On

How to choose travel sunscreen by destination, the tl;dr on tsa liquid limits.

Traveling with sunscreen and other liquids can be confusing. Luckily, we consulted with our besties at TSA, so you don't have to.

Can you travel with full-size sunscreen?

Yes, you can travel with full-size sunscreen. However, due to unforch TSA rules, it will need to be added to checked baggage if it contains over 3.4 fluid ounces of liquid, aerosol or gel.

What size sunscreen can you carry on a plane?

You can carry liquids, gel and aerosol sunscreen in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces Per TSA regulations, each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of these items. For more information regarding traveling with liquids, you can view TSA's liquid packing guide here or contact your booked airline directly.

Can you travel with spray sunscreen?

Yes, you can travel with spray sunscreen on a plane. A cap must cover travel sunscreen sprays with an aerosol nozzle to prevent accidental release.

Take note: travel-sized sunscreen spray for the face is pretty easy to find at your local Target , Sephora or Ulta . However, most spray sunscreen for the body comes in full size, which is above TSA's carry-on regulations. So this may have to be an item that needs to be packed in your checked luggage or purchased at your destination.

Does stick sunscreen count as liquid?

Stick sunscreen does not count as a liquid and is allowed in your carry-on bag with no size limitation; it also does not need to be packed in your quart-sized liquid bag (love that for us.)

So now that you know the rules, it's time to play by them. We don't gatekeep at The Knot, so here's a round-up of some of the best travel-size sunscreens for your upcoming honeymoon, bachelorette weekend or destination wedding.

Ok, we just gave you a list of awesome shoppable options, and while all of these SPF choices are sun-worthy, your honeymoon destination can help you narrow down your decision. Like, what is the best sunscreen for the beach? What about colder climates? Let's quickly chat about the UV index, altitude and destination regulations you may want to consider when choosing your travel-size sunscreen.

SPF Levels: UV Index and Altitude

Just because your honeymoon is in the Swiss Alps doesn't mean you are exempt from needing sunscreen. In fact, elevation levels can drastically affect the amount of UV you are exposed to. In fact, according to Reuters, for every 1,000 feet of altitude, you gain around 10% more UV exposure. That means you have more exposure in the mountains than on the beach!

There's also the UV Index, which provides a daily forecast of the expected risk of overexposure to the sun. The index predicts UV intensity levels on a scale of 1 to 11+, where 1 indicates a minimal risk of overexposure and 11+ means a very high risk. You can use your weather app or simply Google the city name and UV index today.

Regardless of where you spend your honeymoon days, it's recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology that everyone apply a broad-spectrum protection of SPF 30 or higher around 15 minutes before going outside. Sunscreen should be reapplied to the face and body approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

Beach Benefits: Waterproof & Reef-Safe

Waterproof Sunscreen. If you plan on going for a dip in the pool or a morning run on the beach, your travel sunscreen must be sweat- and water-resistant. This means that it's designed to stay on your skin for anywhere from 40 to 80 minutes, even when you're sweating or swimming. Be sure to reapply water-resistant sunscreen after this time period or immediately after swimming or sweating.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen. Reef-safe sunscreens are products that do not use UV-blocking oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are known to cause coral bleaching. When coral turns white, it causes severe stress and makes it susceptible to disease or death. The terms "reef-friendly" and "reef-safe are not currently regulated as of 2023, so be sure to check the ingredient label on the back of your travel-size sunscreen.

In the United States, Hawaii and the city of Key West, Florida , have banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. There has been a ban on sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene in the U.S. Virgin Islands as of March 2020. Then there's Australia , which has some of the strictest sunscreen regulations in the world, where products must undergo extensive testing before being placed on shelves.

Mineral vs. Chemical. The key difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens is that mineral sunscreen sits on top of the skin and blocks rays at the surface using ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, while chemical sunscreens absorb rays like a sponge using ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, or octinoxate.

Mineral sunscreens tend to be better suited for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin and are better trusted when it comes to concerns about reef safety. However, the formulas can be thick and potentially leave a white cast on those with darker skin tones. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, are lighter and less likely to leave an annoying white cast, but they can have ingredients that can irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Sunscreen Stick vs. Spray vs. Lotion: Does It Matter?

All sunscreen forms can provide great protection and coverage. It's all about personal preference and proper application. Spray sunscreen is easy to apply, but it can also easily end up being picked up by the wind as opposed to landing on your skin. Lotions and sticks, on the other hand, provide direct contact and are more likely to provide a thick layer of protection and stay on through a long day of sweating in the sun. So, if you're looking for a quickie, the spray is the way to go, but for maximal protection, a sunscreen stick or lotion is your best bet.

The TSA Just Approved Full-Size Sunscreens in Carry-On Bags [Updated]

UPDATE (April 14, 2021, 10:55 A.M. EST): On April 14, the TSA announced that its ruling on full-size sunscreens was an error. "Our website incorrectly reported that sunscreen containers larger than 3.4 oz. were allowed in carry-on bags, if medically necessary. That error has been corrected," the administration shared on its website . "Travelers still need to ensure liquids, gels, and aerosols in carry-on bags meet the 3-1-1 requirements and are no larger than 3.4 ounces."

This comes as a serious disappointment, to say the least. Everyone needs sunscreen, especially when traveling to sunny, far-off places where the dress code is nothing but swimsuits. That said, don't let it stop you from properly stocking up on sunscreen (vacation or not) wherever you go.

Deciding what to do with your liquid beauty products might be the trickiest part of traveling. Do you buy pocket-sized versions of your go-to's? Do you purchase miniature, empty bottles to fill with product yourself? Do you say “screw it” and ditch your liquids altogether so you can hunt down full sizes once your get where you're going? Everyone's got their own approach, it seems, depending on their destination, how long they'll be there, and how much room they've got to spare in their bags. But now, there's one incredibly important full-size staple we can all pack without fear: sunscreen.

Yes, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) just declared that full-size sunscreens are now allowed on flights in carry-on bags. That's because sunscreens fall under the category of “medically necessary liquids,” (as they should) which are permitted in larger amounts on carry-ons as long as you “declare them to security officers at the checkpoint for inspection,” according to the administration.

More specifically, you can pack sunscreens larger than 3.4 fluid ounces or 100 milliliters in a carry-on bag; you'll just need to make sure that you pack them in a transparent, resealable 1-quart bag (like you do the rest of your carry-on liquids ) and present them for inspection once you reach the security checkpoint.

If you're getting ready for sunny summer travel or are just in the market for a new sunscreen, here are a few of Allure 's all-time favorites for the body: Aveeno Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Stick SPF 50 , La Roche-Posay Anthelios Anti-Shine SPF 60+ Dry Touch Gel-Cream , EltaMD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47 .  Dermatologists are, unsurprisingly, pretty damn excited about this new regulation. “So happy that the TSA is making sun protection easier,” says Mona Gohara, a board-certified dermatologist based in Connecticut. As she explains, any time spent out in the sun requires a lot of sunscreen — she can go through multiple bottles of the stuff on a single vacation. “For maximum protection, The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a broad spectrum of 30 or higher every two hours or after excessive sweating or swimming. It doesn’t stop there; you have to apply a shot glass amount of your entire body to really make it work.” The new rule, she says, allows people to have much better sun protection all around.

It's not often people say this but thank you, TSA — now, it'll be way easier to protect ourselves from sunburns, premature aging, discoloration, skin cancer, and more. Traveling or not, don't forget to apply, apply, apply.

Can You Bring Sunscreen On A Plane? (The TSA Rules For Solid, Liquid & Aerosol Spray Sunblock)

Last Updated on April 11, 2023

Key Takeaways

  • You can bring liquid or spray sunscreen in carry-on bags in travel size containers less than 3.4 ounces .
  • Liquid or spray sunscreen needs to be packed in your one quart-sized bag .
  • A travel size bottle of sunscreen won’t last very long. Solid stick sunscreen can be packed in hand luggage in unrestricted quantities.
  • Full-size sunscreen can only be packed in hold luggage and there may be fees for bringing checked bags.
  • Aerosol sunscreen packed in checked bags but be smaller than 18 ounces and you can’t pack more than 70 ounces of aerosol toiletries in total.

Sunscreen is often an essential item to include on your packing list.

There are various types of sunscreen including lotions, pump sprays, aerosol spray sunscreen, and even solid stick sunscreen.

This post looks at all these types of product and let’s you know if you can bring them on a plane, how much you can take with you, and where you should pack them.

Let’s begin.

TSA Sunscreen Spray Rules & Regulations

If you want to bring sunscreen on a plane you’ll need to get it past the airport security checkpoint.

The Transportation Security Administration is the team that screens luggage. If you pack the wrong size of spray sunscreen or too much it will be confiscated.

Here’s what they have to say about flying with sunscreen on their website.

You might be aware that there are rules around flying with aerosols.

Here’s the deal. While you can’t usually bring aerosols in carry-on luggage you can bring aerosol toiletries or medicines.

Since you apply sunscreen to your skin it’s classed as a toiletry.

Bringing Sunscreen In Carry On Luggage

You can bring liquid or aerosol spray sunscreen in your carry-on luggage in containers that are less than 3.4 ounces. You must pack these TSA-approved travel-size sunscreens in your quart-size bag .

The difficulty can be that a travel-size sunscreen container doesn’t hold a lot of sunscreen. You can pack multiple bottles but space in your quart bag is limited .

For this reason, I suggest you check out solid stick sunscreens like the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer face and body stick.

You can bring solid sunscreen larger than 3.4 oz in your carry-on bag without restriction. Since they are solids they don’t need to be packed in your plastic toiletries zip-top bag.

Bringing Sunscreen In Checked Luggage

If you want to bring lotion sunscreen or sunscreen spray in containers larger than 3.4 ounces then you need to pack it in checked baggage.

Don’t worry aerosol cans will not explode in hold luggage. Again, while flammable aerosols are banned from checked luggage you can bring toiletry aerosols like sunscreen spray.

You cannot bring any aerosol sunscreen larger than 18 ounces in checked baggage, and the total quantity can’t exceed 70 ounces.

One downside of packing sunscreen in checked baggage is that occasionally items are stolen from hold luggage or the entire suitcase gets lost by the airline.

It’s another reason why solid stick sunscreen is a great shout when traveling. While aerosol sunscreen is convenient it’s bulky and there are also some concerns that it’s not safe to breathe in the chemicals.

Still Not Sure? Check With The TSA About Your Sunscreen Spray

If you want further advice you can always just ask using the @AskTSA service on Twitter.

Dee checked with the TSA about bringing her aerosol spray sunscreen on a plane in her carry-on bag. They advised her that since it was a larger container it would only be allowed in checked baggage.

Steven was going on vacation and expected to go through a lot of sunscreen. He asked how much sunscreen lotion he could carry onboard the airplane.

The TSA just answered “3.4 oz”. It would have been better if they’d let Steven know that solid sunscreen is not restricted in hand luggage.

Jack has got it figured out. By choosing to bring solid sunscreen sticks instead of sprays or lotions he is able to fly with a carry-on and avoid any fees for checked bags. Sunscreen is already expensive without needing to pay for checked bags to transport it in.

Nicole was wise to ask if there was a limit to how much aerosol sunscreen could be checked.

Most aerosol cans are smaller than 18 oz so they can be packed in hold luggage.

A lot of travelers like Alexi are concerned because aerosol sunscreens can be flammable. Flammable toiletries are given a pass by the TSA, but flammable non-toiletries are restricted.

Statement regarding sunscreen in carry-on bags

Our website incorrectly reported that sunscreen containers larger than 3.4 oz. were allowed in carry-on bags, if medically necessary. That error has been corrected. Travelers still need to ensure liquids, gels and aerosols in carry-on bags meet the 3-1-1 requirements and are no larger than 3.4 ounces.

TSA advises passengers who need larger quantities of sunscreen, or other liquids, gels and aerosols, to add them to checked baggage for use at their destination. Note: TSA is allowing one liquid hand sanitizer container up to 12 ounces per passenger in carry-on bags until further notice.

Don't skip the sunscreen slogan with a travel-size bottle of sunscreen.

Sunscreen vs Sunblock: What You Need to Know About Ultraviolet Rays

Sunscreens and sunblocks are essential parts of protecting yourself from the harmful rays of the sun, but knowing which one is best for you can be tricky.

Sunscreen is designed to protect against UVA rays, which cause skin damage through wrinkles and ‘photoaging.’

Sunblock, on the other hand, focuses on UVB rays, which are the rays that cause sunburn and associated skin damage.

However, with advances in protective formulations, it’s now possible to get products that offer broad-spectrum protection, meaning they protect against both UVB and UVA rays — helping you avoid wrinkles and sunburn.

That means when you know you won’t need more than one bag for your entire trip, it’s much more cost-effective to take advantage of airlines offering free carry-on service instead of paying additional fees for checked bags.

This will save you money that could be put towards other vacation activities or souvenirs.

Lighten Your Load

Carrying around large items like full-size bottles of sunscreen can cause strain on your body and make it difficult for you to enjoy your vacation without muscle aches and pains.

Using travel-size sunscreen instead, you lighten the load and reduce the strain on your body, allowing you to move around freely and stay active while protecting yourself from the sun’s harmful rays.

Convenience Factor

Travel-size sunscreen is also highly convenient because it fits easily into any pocket or purse — making it perfect for carrying around throughout your travels.

No matter where life takes you during your vacation, whether swimming at the beach or exploring local attractions, having travel-size sunscreen handy ensures that you stay protected at all times — with minimal effort required.

Taking travel-size sunscreen with you on a short trip is essential to avoid hefty baggage fees and minimize strain from carrying heavy items all day.

Packaging lightweight items like these make sense if convenience is critical when planning a successful beach getaway.

So before heading out on your next holiday destination, remember that all that matters are carry-on luggage and travel-size sunscreen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should sunscreen be applied.

The skin needs to be thoroughly protected from damaging UV rays by sunscreen all year round. To do so, applying sunscreen before any outdoor activity and reapplying every 2 hours or after swimming, sweating, or towel-drying is essential.

Additionally, it is vital to use a very water-resistant formula that is sweat-resistant for optimum sun protection. This type of sunscreen will provide better coverage for most active lifestyles and sports activities, reducing the need for reapplication as frequently.

How much sunscreen can I take on a plane?

When traveling by plane, following the liquid restrictions when packing sunscreen is essential. The TSA advises that containers of sunscreen are allowed on board as long as they are smaller than 3.4 ounces (100 ml).

This rule applies to all creams, lotions, gels, pastes, and aerosols, such as spray sunscreen. Larger sunscreen containers need to be packed in checked luggage for safety reasons.

To maximize space in their carry-on, many travelers buy single-use sunscreen packets from their local drugstore before flying.

These small packages often contain enough sunscreen for a full day’s sun protection and can be carried easily through security checkpoints. Allowing for easy transport, following these rules will help make sure you have a stress-free trip.

Does TSA allow full-size sunscreen?

Travelers should always be prepared for their flight, including practically packing necessary items. Sunscreen is a critical item to take on a flight, especially when heading to a sunny destination.

However, due to TSA restrictions, full-size sunscreen bottles are only allowed if packed in checked luggage. Although it may seem restrictive, this measure has been implemented for safety reasons and must be adhered to by travelers.

All passengers should double-check the size of their sunscreen bottle before packing, as only containers, less than 3.4 oz (100 ml) can be carried onto the plane in a carry-on bag.

Is stick sunscreen considered a liquid when flying?

When considering the contents of your carry-on while traveling by plane, it’s essential to know what counts as a liquid and what doesn’t. Stick sunscreen is an item that often comes with travelers and is considered solid regarding airline regulations.

Generally, stick sunscreen can be packed safely in your luggage or taken aboard as part of hand luggage, and as long as it is within the specified weight allowances for both hand luggage and checked-in baggage, there should not be any issues at the airport.

However, if flying internationally, you should check with your airline carrier for restrictions and other rules that may affect items allowed through security checkpoints.

Tips for choosing travel-size sunscreen.

It's no secret that   sunscreen   is effective in protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays. T he problem arises in deciding which sunscreen to choose when you need to travel light.

Using sunscreen and taking other sun protection precautions, such as wearing a hat, wearing protective clothing and avoiding sunlight in the middle of the day when UV rays are most intense, can reduce the risk of early aging, wrinkles, age spots, and even skin cancer. Even if you're indoors, chances are there of some UV rays heading for your skin.

The Australian, Canadian and American Colleges of Dermatology recommend using sunscreen when outdoors and choosing an oil-free sunscreen that protects the skin from sun damage without clogging pores.

How do I select the best Travel-Size Sunscreen?

The problem arises when you need to travel light. Carrying a large bottle of sunscreen isn't convenient or permitted as hand carry on and is going to get you held up at airport security every time. On the other hand, finding a perfectly-sized travel sunscreen can be difficult. The easiest way to do this is to purchase a KINeSYS Performance 1oz / 30ml travel-sized sunscreen that you can carry around everywhere, ensuring you always have some SPF within reach so you can reapply as necessary throughout the day.

KINeSYS Spray Sunscreens are:

  • Oil-free - You will get to renew your skin every time without clogging pores or adding extra shine/grease
  • Hypoallergenic – Our formula contains only high-quality, skin-friendly ingredients to provide highly-effective broad-spectrum UVA and UVB skin protection. It's safe for even the most sensitive skin types.
  • Light and fast-absorbing - Dry quickly to a matte finish, leaving your skin feeling silky and smooth.
  • Doesn't leave your skin feeling greasy.
  • Easy to apply.

 Additionally, our oil-free sunscreens are:

  • Suitable for face and body
  • Non-comedogenic - This weightless formula won't clog pores so potential pimples are no longer a valid excuse for going without sun protection.
  • Sweat and water resistant – Being water-resistant and sweat-proof, you don't have to worry about it running in your eyes when you're swimming or doing other activities.
  • Contains added Vitamin E - To nourish and protect the skin from environmental pollution and moisture loss.
  • In addition to being a high-quality formula, the travel size sunscreen is also PABA-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, fragrance-free and lightly scented.

It's important to maintain your skin beauty routine when travelling, whilst looking your best. One of the best ways to do this while cutting down on the number of products and space they take up in your bag is by choosing "combination" products.

KINeSYS Spray Sunscreen double up as both a cosmetic primer and sunscreen. The easy to apply formula leaves a matte finish that is perfect to wear under or over makeup whilst maintaining good SPF protection.

Flying with Sunscreen - Tips and Regulations

It's our aim to pack light and that means travelling carry-on only. Carrying a large bottle of sunscreen isn't convenient or allowed. It is absolutely essential that you adhere to the 3-1-1 liquids rule whenever you're planning to travel with carry-on luggage.

TSA regulations   The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) has limitations on liquids in carry-on luggage. The 3-1-1 for carry-ons only allows individuals to bring a quart-sized, clear, zip-top bag of fluids including gels, creams, pastes etc. through the checkpoint. This is limited to 3.4 ounces/100 ml or less per item. Liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces can be transported only in checked luggage, even if the bottle or tube isn't completely full.

Considering that the restrictions on baggage for international flights are so strict, it's important to find the right balance between having all the necessities without paying for excess luggage on your next flight. The lack of planning and preparation by travelers slows down the line and leads to long and frustrating delays to get through security. Practicing 3-1-1 will ensure a fast and smooth checkpoint experience.

To help you fly through security checks, take advantage of our mini travel size KINeSYS Spray Sunscreen that allows you to minimize your luggage weight and space. It's also convenient and easy to stash in your bag, for on-the-go application, without worrying about accidental leaks or spills.

13 Best Travel Size Sunscreens

If you’re planning a vacation to the beach, island, or other sunny places, don’t forget to bring sunscreen. It will prevent sunburn and protect you against other risks of sun exposure. But if you prefer to pack lightly, you can choose among the best travel size sunscreens out there.

Regardless of the packaging, travel size sunscreens provide the same benefits as their full-size versions. They’ll protect you from intense UV rays in the middle of the day, which in turn reduces the risk of premature aging, wrinkles, or even skin cancer. However, the difference is that it won’t take up much space in your luggage and there’s no risk of being confiscated at the airport.

But with so many options out there, where do you start? To help you out, we’ve put together a list of the 13 best travel size sunscreens. But before we get started, check out some of these helpful tips.

How to Choose Best Travel Size Sunscreens

Carrying large bottles of sunscreen is uncomfortable and prohibited by most airlines. This is exactly why you should opt for a travel size sunscreen. Besides, you can carry it around and re-apply it whenever needed. But since it will directly affect your skin, you should consider allergy, absorption, and side effects before picking one. Other than that, don’t forget about ease of use because you may not have time for a skincare routine during your trip. So, let’s take a look at some of the factors you should consider before choosing the best travel-size sunscreen.

Wherever you buy a travel size sunscreen, make sure it is labeled ‘broad-spectrum’. This means that the product provides protection not only against UVA rays but also UVB. The former is believed to cause premature aging and skin cancer, while the latter is a cause of sunburn.

Sun protection factor (SPF)

You’ll want a sunscreen with an SPF of more than 30. That’s because the higher the number, the more protection it offers. For example, a sunscreen with SPF 15 will only prevent sunburn but does not reduce the risk of skin cancer or premature aging. So make sure you take this into account before buying.

Ease of Reapplication

Sunscreen is easily rubbed off by water or sweat. For optimal effect, you need to reapply it every two hours. This is why you should choose a sunscreen with compact packaging. That way, it will be easy to grab and reapply at any time. However, if the size does not really matter to you, you could always opt for regular size product, such as Sea and Ski Sunscreen .

Water-Resistant

Yes, you read that right. There’s no best travel size sunscreen out there that’s waterproof or sweat-proof. The best they can do is make sure it lasts long enough when you swim or sweat. So before you buy, check this information on the back of the packaging. This way, you’ll know exactly when to reapply. Most will suggest every two hours, especially during intense activity.

Banana Boat Ultra Sport

If you’re planning to visit the hardest mountains to climb or do some other intense activity while on vacation, then you definitely need a high-performance sunscreen like Banana Boat Ultra Sport . It offers great resistance to water and sweat, for up to 80 minutes! They also use a fast-absorbing formula, so your skin won’t feel greasy at all. With SPF 50, Banana Boat Ultra Sport promises protection against UVA and UVB. You can stay active all day long, without the risk of sunburn, skin cancer, or premature aging.

WHAT IS TRAVEL-SIZED SUNSCREEN?

According to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) , travel-sized sunscreen containers are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) in size. If you bring larger sunscreen for travel, you’ll need to pack it in your checked baggage, not your carry-on item.

light bulb icon

WHAT ARE THE RESTRICTIONS ON SUNSCREEN FOR TRAVEL?

If your travel sunscreen comes in a liquid, aerosol, or cream formula, the product must be no bigger than 3.4 oz to go in a carry-on and through airport security. Larger containers must go in a checked suitcase, no matter how empty or full the contents may be.

For longer vacations that require ample sun protection, it’s best to pour your SPF product into multiple travel-sized sunscreen bottles to ensure your item isn’t confiscated at the TSA security checkpoint.

To facilitate the screening process, passengers are asked to place their liquid items into one clear, tamper-evident, quart-sized bag separate from their carry-on bag, which must be screened and cleared before boarding. This is often referred to as the 3-1-1 liquids rule: 3 (approximate ounces per container) in 1 (quart-sized bag) per 1 (passenger).

Note: As of June 30, 2018, the revised TSA policy states that passengers traveling to the U.S. from an international last-point-of-departure with powder-based substances greater than 12 oz (350mL) in a carry-on may require additional screening. For your convenience, it’s encouraged to pack powder substances, such as travel sunscreen, in your checked luggage regardless of their size.

light bulb icon

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T BRING TRAVEL-SIZE SUNBLOCK**?

Although it’s possible for a prohibited item to make it past TSA screening without triggering an alarm, the situation is very rare. Also, according to TSA guidelines , even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it signals an alarm.

If your item(s) set off an alarm, a TSA officer will first ask you to confirm ownership of the luggage, then request you to remove the object in question for further inspection. Any item that’s deemed prohibited or cannot be screened will not be permitted past security. Federal law and operational considerations restrict the return of prohibited items that are left at the security checkpoint.

Ultimately, the final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.

WHY CAN’T I TRAVEL WITH SUNSCREEN TO CERTAIN STATES OR COUNTRIES?

In some locations, such as Hawaii and the Virgin Islands, your travel sunscreen may be prohibited depending on the UV filter contained in the product’s ingredient label. These states and countries ban sunscreens that use certain chemicals known to kill coral reef* and harm ecosystems.

light bulb icon

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHEMICAL VS. MINERAL TRAVEL-SIZE SUNSCREEN?

According to EPA.gov , some sunscreen works using chemical active ingredients to absorb UV radiation and convert the energy into heat, which is then released back out through the body before DNA damage occurs. These products are applied onto skin, then absorb past the skill cell barrier and into the bloodstream, where the chemical reaction occurs and filters UV light.

These products contain harsh chemicals — such as oxybenzone — and cause hazardous pollution that can damage the environment when washed off into water systems. Since these chemicals can enter the bloodstream after application, they often leave behind toxins that continue to circulate throughout the body. Many people also experience uncomfortable irritation to the heat reaction caused by the UV filters.

Mineral sunscreen, sometimes called physical sunscreen, works differently because it contains all-natural active ingredients that rest on top of the outer layer of skin. The minerals have reflective properties and scatter light away from the body to protect against radiation.

These products are considered reef-safe* sunscreen as they do not harm ocean wildlife, so they’re permissible for swimming in tropical locations. Since the ingredients do not transcend past the skin cell barrier into the bloodstream, they’re much gentler and less likely to trigger a heat rash, redness, irritation, or allergic reaction.

light bulb icon

WHAT IS THE BEST TYPE OF SUNSCREEN TO TRAVEL WITH?

Generally speaking, mineral powder sunscreen is best for travel because there are fewer restrictions on how much you can bring and where you can use it. It’s also very easy to reapply on-the-go, and less likely to make a mess in your luggage caused by changes in air pressure at increased altitudes.

However, the TSA has determined that liquids, aerosols, creams, and powders are safe to bring aboard aircraft cabins in limited quantities. This means that you have the choice to choose which type of formula best aligns with your preferences.

At Colorescience, you can shop travel-sized sunscreen that comes in the form of powder, liquid, or stick application, so you have no shortage of options.

What Sunscreen Is Safe to Use? 14 Sunscreen Ingredients to Potentially Avoid

Price: ( 0 Lasting Beauty Points)

Here's the 411 on the TSA's 3-1-1 liquids rule

Samantha Rosen

We've all been there. Waiting in the Transportation Security Administration line only to hear agents call for a "bag check," often because a traveler had a liquid product in their carry-on that's over the allowed limit (or some sort of other prohibited item).

It's a process that can sure slow things down, particularly on the busiest travel days. As you pack for your trip and consider what to put in your carry-on or checked luggage, it's important to consider what the TSA's limits are for liquids and similar products.

Since September 2006, the TSA has gone by the 3-1-1 rule when it comes to those types of products, including items like toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash and lotion -- sunscreen included.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

In short, the 3-1-1 rule is: Each liquid you bring through the TSA checkpoint must be in a 3.4-ounce or smaller container ("3"), all containers must be placed inside one clear quart-size plastic bag ("1") and each passenger is only allowed one plastic bag ("1").

what is travel size sunscreen

If you meet those requirements, you should get through security without issue. However, if your liquid items are larger than 3.4 ounces each, you'll have to leave them in your checked bag.

what is travel size sunscreen

There are a few exceptions, though.

The TSA has kept in place a temporary pandemic exception to the rule, allowing up to 12 ounces of liquid hand sanitizer in carry-on baggage.

Part of this exception: The hand sanitizer will have to be screened separately since it's technically over the limit. You'll need to remove it from your bag before it goes through the scanner.

There are also exceptions for larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels and aerosols. You can bring those products in larger, "reasonable" quantities, the TSA's website says. However, you must declare those items to security officers at the checkpoint for inspection.

This could, obviously, take a little more time than if you're traveling without those items.

This exception doesn't include sunscreen, despite calls to relax sunscreen restrictions at TSA checkpoints. Like other liquid products, sunscreen bottles over 3.4 ounces must go in your checked luggage.

There are also many liquids you cannot bring with you .

You can bring creamy cheeses, liquid chocolate, liquid coffee, creamy dips and spreads, gravy, honey, hummus, ice cream, jam, jelly, juice, syrup, peanut butter, salad dressing, sauce, salsa, soda, soup and yogurt as long as they are in a container of less than 3.4 ounces according to the TSA .

Related: Should you get TSA PreCheck or Clear — or both?

And yes, you can bring your water bottle with you, even if it weighs more than 3.4 ounces — as long as it's empty. This can also be a great way to save money at the airport, since -- as the TSA points out -- many airports have filling stations for reusable water bottles.

When in doubt, consult the TSA's list of what you can carry through the airport and check with your airline.

Bringing Sunscreen on a Plane: Don’t Get Burned by TSA’s Rules!

There’s nothing worse than turning into a lobster while on vacation. So naturally, many travelers take sunscreen with them through airport security every year, hoping to get protection from the unrelenting Sun.

But bringing sunscreen on a plane presents a few specific issues that you want to be aware of before you head to the airport.

In this article, we will break down all of the TSA rules and other FAA restrictions you need to think about when taking sunscreen through airport security.

Table of Contents

Can you bring sunscreen on a plane?

Yes, you can bring sunscreen on a plane as a carry-on item as long as you comply with the TSA liquids 3.4 ounce rule. You can also bring sunscreen in your checked baggage but you need to be mindful of FAA restrictions on the quantity and size of aerosol bottles you can bring.

Be careful applying sunscreen before your flight because you could trigger the alarm while going through security if you get swabbed by a TSA agent. Also, be aware that certain states and countries banned certain types of sunscreens that contain chemicals that could be harmful to coral reefs.

If you want to know more about traveling with sunscreen through TSA, keep reading below!

Important: Getting through airport security with sunscreen

If you were recently having fun in the sun and applying sunscreen before heading through airport security, be aware that some sunscreen or SPF products may contain glycerin .

That’s important because glycerin is one of the chemicals that can trigger the alarm whenever getting swabbed.

What does it mean to get swabbed?

One way that TSA agents try to keep passengers safe is by detecting whether or not passengers have come into contact with explosive materials. And one of the ways that they do this is by taking samples from the hands of passengers as well as their luggage contents.

If that sample contains traces of explosives, then the passenger will likely be subject to questioning and perhaps even a much more invasive search. That invasive search could involve a pat down and more swabbing which could take an extra 20 minutes or longer.

When going through airport security, you don’t always get swabbed but if you applied sunscreen containing glycerin on the day of your travels, there is a chance you would test positive if you got swabbed!

You can read more about what it’s like to  get swabbed at the airport here .

Security officer swabbing

Bringing sunscreen as a carry-on (TSA liquids rule)

TSA  allows  you to bring liquids like sunscreen on board as long as they are contained within a container no larger than 3.4 fluid ounces or (100 mL) and all of those containers can fit comfortably inside of one clear quart sized bag (this is known as the TSA Liquids 3-1-1 Rule ).

You will need to remove this liquids bag from your carry-on bag when going through the security checkpoint unless you have  TSA Pre-Check .

Keep in mind that this will focus is on the size of your liquid container and not the amount of liquids on the inside.

For example, if you had a five ounce container of sunscreen but only 3 ounces of sunscreen on the inside, that would not be permitted. The actual container needs to have 3.4 ounces of volume or less.

Also, this 3.4 ounce limitation also applies to sunscreen spray or aerosol bottles. (If you plan on bringing a spray bottle of sunscreen make sure that you bring it with the cap attached).

It’s really easy to find travel bottles of sunscreen under 3.4 ounces so it shouldn’t be a problem to get a container of sunscreen lotion that can go with you.

If you have a larger bottle of sunscreen that you really like, it is possible for you to pour this into your own 3.4 ounce travel container. You could always write “sunscreen” on the bottle for a reminder and perhaps to give TSA a hint of what is in the bottle (although it is not necessary).

Sunscreen bottles

I thought I could bring bigger bottles of sunscreen through TSA?

If you are a bit confused about the size limitation for sunscreen, it’s completely understandable.

At one point, TSA announced that they were going to allow sunscreen bottles larger than 3.4 ounces to be taken through security. This was apparently going to be done to help reduce the threat of skin cancer and UV damage to travelers.

In other words, sunscreen was going to be treated as a medically necessary liquid which would place it under the medical exception that allows for larger liquids bottles.

But as soon as this announcement was leaked it was rescinded and TSA clarified that sunscreen is still subject to the liquids 3.4 ounce rule.

“Our website incorrectly reported that sunscreen containers larger than 3.4 oz. were allowed in carry-on bags if medically necessary. That error has been corrected. Sunscreen in carry-on bags must be 3.4 oz. or less. Larger quantities should be placed in checked baggage.”

Flying with sunscreen in the cabin (applying it mid-flight)

Lots of people apply lotion during a flight because it helps them reduce uncomfortable dry skin but applying sunscreen during a flight would just be stupid, right?

Well, maybe not.

Marc Glashofer, M.D., a dermatologist and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, told CN Traveler that it is possible to get sunburned on a plane.

But worse than that, the windows on a plane can be penetrated by UVA rays, which penetrate your skin to a deeper level and are often the culprit for causing skin cancer.

A lot of the risk pertains to pilots who are constantly in the air and exposed to UV rays via much larger windows than what a typical passenger is exposed to.

For example, one  study  in JAMA Dermatology found that a single hour flying at 30,000 feet could expose pilots to an equivalent amount of UV radiation that someone would get spending just 20 minutes in a tanning bed.

However, some reputable sources claim that plane windows block out a lot of the harmful UV rays including both UVA and UVB.

So the risk of skin cancer or UV damage is probably low for passengers.

But for skin conscious travelers, you may feel better about your seat selection if you have sunscreen on hand just in case that Sun starts to hit your face a little bit too much.

Of course, if you select the window seat it’s your choice to put down the window shade so you could always reduce that risk by just shutting the shade.

If you do decide to apply sunscreen in the cabin, just be careful about pulling out any type of bottles because your bottle could explode in the plane and create a big mess for everyone nearby.

A good way to avoid this is to squeeze out the air from the bottle whenever you are on the ground so that the air has room to expand at altitude.

Also, try to cover the nozzle with a bag (perhaps your liquids bag) whenever you open it so that if it does burst, it won’t get everywhere.

And finally, consider selecting sunscreen that does not contain a scent because it’s not very considerate to unleash a strong scent throughout the cabin.

Bringing aerosol sunscreen in your checked baggage

When you travel with aerosol sunscreen in your checked baggage, you have to keep in mind the FAA restrictions on the total quantity and size of your medicinal and toiletry articles.

For checked baggage,  the FAA states the capacity of each aerosol container must not exceed 0.5 kg (18 ounces) or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces). It should not be difficult to find aerosol sunscreen bottles smaller than 17 fluid ounces so you don’t have a lot to worry about in most cases.

The aggregate total of all of your toiletry items in your checked baggage cannot exceed 2 kg (70 ounces) or 2 L (68 fluid ounces). That would be a lot of aerosol sunscreen for most people so once again it shouldn’t be hard to abide by that requirement.

Once again, if you have aerosol bottles make sure that you have them covered with the cap to prevent accidental release.

You also have to be mindful about the sunscreen bottle exploding in your luggage.

The best way to prevent something from happening is to try to squeeze out any air that you can before you place it in your checked baggage.

In addition to that, double bag the sunscreen and perhaps consider storing it in a separate compartment so that you can minimize the damage from a spill.

Luggage with bottle inside

Buying sunscreen at your destination

Sunscreen is one of the easiest items to find at any type of tourist destination or tropical vacation spot.

The problem is sunscreen at these places, especially in shops at all-inclusive resorts, can be extremely expensive. We’re talking $25 plus per bottle.

Talk about getting squeezed!

Moreover, they may not sell small bottles so you could be forced to buy a larger, more expensive bottle that you may only use a small portion of on your trip.

For this reason, I usually try to purchase a couple of small sunscreen bottles or spray canisters that I bring with us when we travel to tropical destinations.

(If I’m using checked baggage, I’ll just purchase a big bottle and bring that along.)

You can also look into packages that come with sunscreen. For example, if you were renting a car through Turo or other types of rental companies, sometimes you can get free sunscreen with your rental or just add it on.

Woman applying sunscreen at beach

Bringing sunscreen to different countries or states

Some sunscreens may not be allowed in certain countries or even certain states such as Hawaii.

There has been a growing trend of banning certain sunscreen ingredients because of the harm that they could do to reef systems. For example, Aruba banned sunscreens containing Oxybenzone.

In 2021, Hawaii banned sunscreens containing both oxybenzone and octinoxate as did the US Virgin Islands and Key West .

I’m sure many more will follow.

So if you are heading to a tropical destination where you might find coral reef or where scuba diving or snorkeling are popular, be sure to double check that your sunscreen is allowed.

Look for sunscreens that are labeled as “reef safe” or “biodegradable.” I personally use Coppertone Sport 50 SPF 4-in-1 that is free of many of the prohibited active ingredients.

In addition, you can consider purchasing diving shirts that block out UV rays so that you don’t have to worry about applying a lot of extra sunscreen.

Aruba beach

When traveling with sunscreen, you need to be mindful about the liquids rule and also be careful about applying sunscreen before you head to the airport because you could trigger the alarm if you get swabbed by TSA. If you put the bottles or spray canisters in your checked baggage make sure you comply with the FAA rules mentioned above.

And finally, try to bring your own sunscreen so that you can avoid getting burned by the hotel, and be mindful about the local laws that could prohibit certain types of sunscreen.

While basking in the joy of discovering new places, dealing with stubborn tan lines has been an inevitable struggle. Hence, I've come to appreciate the presence of the best travel-size sunscreens, which I can rely on whenever needed!

Just like  waterproof sunscreens are important, carrying a travel-sized sunscreen is akin to having a pocket-sized shield against the sun's relentless beams, and the advantages are plentiful. Our contributor Dr. Anna Chacon, a board-certified dermatologist, says, “The benefits of leading travel-size sunscreens include their compact size for easy transport, broad-spectrum protection, water resistance, and non-greasy formulas. All in all, a travel-sized sunscreen is a handy product that provides great skin protection. ”

After extensively reviewing and testing various sunscreens, a comprehensive buying guide felt essential, ensuring informed and optimal purchases for sun protection needs.

How to Select a Travel-sized Sunscreen for Yourself?

Selecting the right travel-sized sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin while on the go. As per our contributor Dr. Chacon, “Essential features to consider when selecting a compact sunscreen include broad-spectrum coverage, SPF rating, water resistance, non-comedogenic formulation, and skin type compatibility.”

Here's a guide to help you make an informed decision:

  • Consider Your Skin Type: Prior to purchasing a travel-sized sunscreen, it's crucial to understand your skin's needs. For individuals with oilier skin, opting for oil-free or gel-based sunscreens might be advantageous. Conversely, those with dry skin might benefit from moisturizing or creamy formulations. Individuals with sensitive skin should look for sunscreens specifically labeled as hypoallergenic or formulated for sensitive skin types.
  • SPF (Sun Protection Factor): The SPF measures a sunscreen's effectiveness against UVB rays. For everyday use, an SPF of 30 is generally considered sufficient. However, if you anticipate prolonged sun exposure, especially in tropical climates, opting for SPF 50 or higher is recommended. Remember, regardless of SPF, reapplication of sunscreen is crucial for continuous protection.
  • Broad Spectrum Protection: Ensure the sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection, shielding against both UVA and UVB rays. This will help prevent premature aging due to photodamage and more severe skin problems such as sunburns.
  • Water Resistance: If your travel plans involve water activities or increased perspiration, selecting a water-resistant sunscreen is prudent. However, even water-resistant formulations necessitate reapplication after swimming or sweating to maintain efficacy.
  • Ingredients: Delve into the sunscreen's ingredients list. Prioritize sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for their broad-spectrum protection, creating a barrier on the skin to reflect harmful UV rays. While chemical blockers like avobenzone and octinoxate absorb UV rays, some individuals may experience skin sensitivities. Mineral-based sunscreens, with physical blockers, are often preferred by those with sensitive skin due to a reduced risk of irritation. I recommend opting for sunscreens without oxybenzone , as the ingredient has raised concerns for not being reef-safe and potentially disrupting the body’s hormonal balance. Opting for oxybenzone-free formulations ensures safer protection against UV rays, promoting both skin health and safety.
  • Formulation: Consider the sunscreen's formulation concerning your skin type and personal preferences. Cream-based sunscreens offer versatility and are well-suited for dry skin types, while gels or sprays tend to be lighter and are favored by those with oily skin. Stick sunscreens offer convenience for targeted applications, such as the face or delicate areas around the eyes.
  • Portability: Since you're looking for a travel-sized sunscreen, prioritize portability in your selection. Opt for packaging that's compact, leak-proof, and TSA-approved for air travel. Tubes or small bottles prove convenient for packing in carry-on bags or pockets, ensuring hassle-free application during travel.
  • Fragrance And Allergens: Pay attention to added fragrances or potential allergens present in sunscreen formulations, especially if you have sensitive skin. Fragrance-free or hypoallergenic options are available and can significantly reduce the risk of skin irritation or allergic reactions.
  • Application Ease: Consider the ease of application when selecting a sunscreen. Some formulations may leave a white cast or feel heavy on the skin, which might not be ideal for everyday use. Choose a formula that feels comfortable on your skin and aligns with your desired application experience.
  • Expiration Date: Check the expiration date on the sunscreen packaging. Using expired products can compromise effectiveness, so ensure you're using a product within its recommended shelf life for optimal protection.
  • Environmental Impact: If minimizing your environmental footprint is a priority, consider eco-friendly options or brands committed to sustainable practices in their sunscreen formulations.
  • Consult a Dermatologist: For personalized recommendations or if you have specific skin concerns, seeking advice from a dermatologist before choosing a sunscreen can provide valuable insights into selecting the most suitable product for your skin.

Picking a travel-sized sunscreen involves considering your skin type, SPF, broad-spectrum protection, ingredients, formulation, portability, fragrance, brand reputation, ease of application, usage instructions, expiration date, testing, environmental impact, and consulting a dermatologist if needed. Prioritize your skin's health and comfort while enjoying your travels under the sun.

Tips for Applying And Reapplying Sunscreen While Traveling:

Ensuring proper application and reapplication of sunscreen while traveling is crucial for influential sun protection. Here are some tips to help you maintain sun safety on the go:

1. Apply Generously: Use a sufficient amount of sunscreen. Most people apply too little, reducing the effectiveness of the protection. Aim for about a shot glass amount (approximately one ounce) to cover your entire body.

2. Timing Matters: Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully bind to the skin. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming, sweating, or towel-drying.

3. Cover All Exposed Areas: Don’t forget easily overlooked areas like ears, lips, scalp (if not covered by hair), feet, back of the neck, and the tops of hands. Use lip balms with SPF to protect your lips.

4. Be Thorough: Apply the sunscreen evenly on the skin. Often, people miss spots, leading to uneven protection. Take your time to cover all areas evenly.

5. Don’t Miss the Eyes: Avoid getting sunscreen into your eyes, but don’t forget to apply it around the eyes. Consider using UV-shielding sunglasses for added protection.

6. Layering Products: If using skincare products like moisturizers or serums, apply sunscreen as the final layer to ensure direct contact with your skin for maximum effectiveness.

7. Reapply After Swimming Or Sweating: Water-resistant sunscreens offer some durability in water, but it's crucial to reapply after swimming, excessive sweating, or towel-drying to maintain protection.

8. Carry Travel-sized Sunscreen: Utilize travel-sized sunscreen bottles or sticks that comply with TSA regulations for easy portability. Carry them in your bag or pocket for quick reapplications.

9. Choose Convenient Formats:

Opt for sunscreen sticks or sprays for easy application, especially on the face. They’re convenient and minimize mess while on the move.

10. Set Reminders:

Set reminders on your phone or watch to prompt you for sunscreen reapplication, especially when engaged in outdoor activities or sightseeing.

11. Use Protective Clothing:

Pair sunscreen application with protective clothing. Wear hats, long-sleeved shirts, and sunglasses to shield yourself from direct sunlight.

12. Check the Sun’s Intensity:

Be mindful of the sun’s intensity, especially during peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Seek shade when possible, and reapply sunscreen more frequently during these hours.

13. Consistency is Key:

Make applying sunscreen a consistent habit, regardless of the weather or location. UV rays can penetrate clouds and reflective surfaces, so protection is necessary even on cloudy days.

14. Educate Travel Companions:

If traveling with others, encourage and remind them to apply sunscreen regularly. Offer to help cover hard-to-reach areas for each other.

15. Reapplication with Makeup: If wearing makeup, consider using a setting spray with SPF or a mineral powder with sun protection for easy reapplication without disturbing your makeup.

Applying and reapplying sunscreen while traveling is crucial for safeguarding your skin from harmful UV rays. Following these tips ensures proper and consistent sun protection, allowing you to enjoy your adventures without compromising your skin’s health.

No matter the destination, traveling with sunscreen is one of the best (and usually most cost-effective) ways to protect your skin from harmful rays. If checking in a suitcase isn’t a part of your flying routine, it’s important to bring a travel-size sunscreen that falls under the general 3.4-ounce size limit.

Almost every popular sunscreen or skin care brand carries a mini version of their full-size products, so we researched the best on the market and tested 20 different TSA-friendly options for your next tropical vacation . Earning rave reviews for being lightweight and water-resistant, the Babo Botanicals Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Lotion is our overall pick for the best travel-size sunscreen. Stick, spray, reef-safe, and splurge-worthy sunblocks are included in our list, too.

Best Overall

Babo botanicals sheer mineral sunscreen lotion spf 50.

  • Transfer 5 /5
  • Opacity 5 /5
  • Water Resistance 5 /5

The consistency feels like lotion so a little goes a long way.

There is a very slight white cast that disappears after you rub in the sunscreen.

From texture to water-resistance, the Babo Botanicals Sheer Mineral Sunscreen won us over when we used it on a four-day trip to Hawaii . While we were expecting the formula to feel thick like typical mineral sunscreens, we were big fans of the liquid-type texture that applies like a nourishing lotion. After putting sunscreen all over the body and face at the beach, our tester loves that the formula absorbs quickly, only has a faint mineral smell, and doesn’t feel greasy.

Best of all, we discovered that a little goes a long way, with our tester sharing that “sometimes with mineral sunscreen, it feels like there are patches that don't get covered because of the thicker consistency. With this one, it felt like I didn't have to use as much to feel safely covered.” And when we went into the ocean, the sunscreen remained on the skin and didn’t come off or transfer onto any clothes or towels. We used the sunscreen several times per day for four days, and there was still about one-third of the product left over, so we think the value is exceptional for a hydrating and protective 3-ounce bottle.

The Details: SPF 50 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance

Best Budget

Banana boat sport sunscreen lotion.

The sunscreen is ideal for being active, and it comes with two travel-size tubes.

The formula is not reef-safe.

Banana Boat is one of the best and most affordable brands on the market, so we recommend their travel-size Sport Performance Sunscreen. For a competitive price, you get two 3-ounce bottles that can easily fit in your carry-on. T+L’s digital editorial director used the sunblock on a trip to Mexico and raved about the no-frills formula that is hydrating, protective from the sun, and doesn’t transfer onto clothes or swimsuits. The texture is fairly thick, so it takes a bit of rubbing in to get a sheer finish, but it doesn’t take too long to absorb. “It protected my skin on a long day out on a boat in the sun, and I got a nice glow but did not burn at all,” they shared. “I would recommend it for those looking for a basic sunscreen to pack for a vacation that will include lots of time outdoors swimming or sweating.” The only downside is that the sunblock isn’t safe for reefs, which is something to consider for snorkeling or swimming in tropical waters.

The Details: SPF 30 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance

Travel + Leisure / Nina Ruggiero

Best for Hydration

Coola classic body sunscreen.

The texture feels exactly like lotion, and it doesn’t have an overpowering tropical scent.

It’s not designed to be worn on the face.

“I love how it left my skin feeling moisturized and not goopy,” one T+L writer shared after wearing Coola’s Organic Classic Body Sunscreen every day for two weeks. “It didn't feel like I was wearing sunscreen, but rather a high-quality body lotion.” We love that the formula is made with plant-based ingredients and is safe under the Hawaii Reef Compliant Act, meaning it doesn’t have harmful chemicals that can damage coral reefs . Every time we applied the sunblock, it went on the skin evenly and smoothly without leaving a white cast or greasy residue. It didn’t transfer onto clothing or a towel, and the sunscreen didn’t run off after coming into contact with water. With prolonged use, we still had nearly half of the 3.4-ounce bottle left over, so we think the sunscreen could easily last for a one-to-two-week-long trip depending on how many times you use it throughout the day.

The Details: SPF 50 | 3.4 ounces | 80 minute water resistance

Travel + Leisure / Taylor Fox

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen

It completely absorbs into the skin in under a minute.

There is a slight floral scent.

The best part of Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry-touch Sunscreen is that you’ll barely feel it on your skin after applying the smooth and lightweight formula. Within one minute of applying the sunscreen, it absorbs seamlessly without leaving a greasy trace. The subtle floral scent masks any hints of typical sunscreen odors, so we didn’t mind the smell. We think the sunscreen consistency is thick enough that it feels hydrating without leaving a pesky white cast. According to our tester, “the design of the bottle makes it so the dispenser is at the bottom, so gravity really does the work and makes it super easy [to dispense].” When we wore the sunscreen under running water, it did run off the skin a little bit, but it didn’t cause the stinging in the eyes that can often happen with sunscreen. If you’re looking for sunblock that feels barely there, this one should be on your packing list.

The Details: SPF 55 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance

Travel + Leisure / Elena Garcia

Best Reef-safe

Mdsolarsciences mineral creme.

The mineral formula is free of ingredients that can cause damage to reefs, and it absorbs much better than similar eco-friendly products.

There is a slight white cast if you don’t rub it in thoroughly.

The MDSolarSciences Mineral Crème SPF 50 Sunscreen is free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are two ingredients that can cause coral reef bleaching. As expected with a mineral sunscreen, it was a bit thick, but once we rubbed it in thoroughly, the slight white cast went away. However, the best aspect of this silky sunblock is that it can be used all over the body. “When I go on vacation, I normally bring sunscreen for the face and another tube for the rest of my body, but this product does it all so I can easily bring less with me,” our tester gushed. Besides the eco-conscious formula, we love that the brand also uses ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc that are designed for sensitivities like acne- or rosacea-prone skin. If you’re curious about the formula, the brand lists every ingredient with the option to click on the name for an explainer of the purpose of the component for transparency.

The Details: SPF 50 | 1.7 ounces | 80 minute water resistance

Travel + Leisure / Stella Yu

Best Splurge

Shiseido ultimate sun protector lotion.

A little bit of this lightweight formula goes a long way.

The consistency is a slightly watery and oily.

We love that even a small dollop of the Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion blends effortlessly into the skin for a smooth and moisturizing finish. Although the bottle is only 1.6 ounces, the watery consistency makes it easy to spread the sun lotion, so just a little will get you plenty of coverage. The formula feels a bit oily, but after about five to 10 minutes, the sunscreen absorbs with a completely sheer set. “It feels so lightweight that it's almost undetectable on the skin but leaves an initially dewy glow that looks gorgeous in the sunlight,” our tester raved. For travelers looking for a fragrance-free sunscreen, we didn’t detect any scent, including that typical sunscreen smell. When we ran a sunscreen-soaked arm under the faucet, the formula remained perfectly absorbed without running off, so we feel confident in the brand’s promise of up to 80 minutes of water resistance before you’ll want to reapply.

The Details: SPF 50+ | 1.6 ounces | 80 minute water resistance

Travel + Leisure / Cai Cramer

Best for Face

Black girl sunscreen broad spectrum spf 30.

  • Feel 4.3 /5
  • Opacity 4.7 /5
  • Water Resistance 4.5 /5
  • Removal 5 /5

The sheer formula is designed to be used as a lotion and sunscreen that won’t leave behind a white cast.

It has a glowy finish.

The Black Girl Sunscreen Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion is made with a variety of ingredients like jojoba and avocado, which protect and moisturize the skin without leaving a white cast finish. While the brand’s sunscreen is intended for darker skin tones, we think it’s a great option for all travelers looking for a hydrating sunblock. “I think it applies and complements all skin types well. It does not leave that pasty, ghost-like look after application,” our tester shared. Our tester wore the sunscreen over medicated acne creams and loved that it layers smoothly over the other skin care products without transferring or rubbing off when it comes into contact with water. Plus, the formula is fragrance-free, which is better for sensitive skin. If you’re looking for a facial sunscreen with a glowy (not greasy) finish, this sunscreen is a great option. “It blends seamlessly with my skin tone and actually adds a beautiful shimmer,” our tester concluded.

Coola Organic Classic Sunscreen & Sunblock Spray

The can makes it incredibly easy to apply the sunscreen and it rubs in without leaving a greasy residue.

It has a fairly strong tropical scent.

Using a spray sunscreen like this option from Coola makes it easier to reach more difficult parts of the body like the back. We’re big fans of the lightweight and transparent formula of this SPF 30 spray that didn’t leave any type of pasty color or greasy finish behind. And best of all, we couldn’t get enough of the coconut scent that wasn’t too overpowering and transported us to a sunny tropical island. The spray sunscreen dries quickly after being lightly rubbed into the skin, and our tester appreciated the gentle and nourishing feel of the vegan and paraben-free formula. After using sunscreen on the face every day for two weeks, there was about half left, so we think the 2-ounce bottle would only last for a weekend trip if you’re using it for all-over coverage. However, for quicker trips, this lightweight spray is a great option.

Shiseido UV Clear Stick Protector SPF 50

The stick applicator makes it super easy to apply without getting sunscreen all over your hands.

It might be time-consuming to apply the sunscreen stick all over the body.

Shiseido’s Clear Sunscreen Stick is ideal for storing in your everyday bag for sun protection on the go. The stick is very small, but it packs a punch with a thick SPF 50+ formula that can easily be applied without having to get sunscreen all over your hands. It feels a bit greasy at first, but once we rubbed in the sunblock, the slight sheen went away quickly. “The stick of this sunscreen is clear, so I was delighted that there's no white overdue cast on my brown skin,” our tester raved. “After I applied it and rubbed it in, there was no way to tell where it had been applied as it fully absorbed into my skin, leaving no residue.” We used the sunscreen during a sweaty 45-minute workout and we were pleased to see that it didn’t run or rub off, so this is a great face sunscreen option for outdoor activities like hiking and biking.

Best Lightweight

Innisfree daily uv defense sunscreen.

It has the same consistency as sheer lotion.

There is a slightly shimmery finish.

Out of all of the travel-size sunscreens we tested, the Innisfree Daily UV Defense Sunscreen resembles the consistency and feel of a sheer face moisturizer the most. The lightweight formula is infused with natural ingredients like green tea, cica, and sunflower seed oil, and it has more of a watery texture than other sunscreens we tried. We think it’s ideal for working out or outdoor activities where you may get sweaty because the sunscreen didn’t run when it came in contact with water, and it absorbs quickly without leaving any clumpy or greasy residue. Instead, it gives a “dewy shimmer” finish that our tester shared would be “ideal for summer.” It has a very subtle fragrance that wasn’t overpowering, and it doesn’t leave any type of white cast after application.

Best Mousse

Supergoop play body sunscreen mousse.

The foamy texture is easy to apply, extremely hydrating, and dries faster than lotion.

It’s hard to tell how much sunscreen is left in the bottle.

T+L’s senior commerce editor swears by Supergoop sunscreen, especially the Blue Sea Kale Body Mousse. Whether you’re applying sunscreen to your face or body, it’s super easy to use the top-press applicator to release the lightweight foam sunscreen. It has a very slight sunscreen scent that isn’t overpowering, and our tester often uses the sunscreen as a hydrating lotion when they travel to tropical destinations . “My skin is prone to dryness and this product feels moisturizing enough that it can replace a separate body lotion for me as well,” they said. “Even when I'm in a hot climate or sweating, there's no stickiness or evidence that something is on my skin.” We love that the formula doesn’t leave any type of white cast or greasiness after application, and it’s reef-friendly so you can wear it safely around coral. Our tester also recommends it to her friends with kids, as the whipped texture makes it extra fun to apply.

Other Travel-size Sunscreens We Tested

This was a competitive test, and many of our testers gave rave reviews. However, the five sunscreens listed below fell slightly short during testing due to a few minor issues like scent and white cast.

  • Sun Bum Original SPF 70 Sunscreen Lotion : The consistency is thick and hydrating, so we recommend it for the body. However, some rubbed off into our tester’s eye and caused stinging, so we would be cautious about using it on the face.
  • La Roche Posay Anthelios Sunscreen, Melt-in Milk Lotion Face and Body Sunscreen : The sunscreen doesn’t leave a white cast, and it feels very nourishing like a thick lotion, but the chemical smell was overpowering and harsh.
  • Vacation Classic Lotion SPF 30 : The chemical formula rubs in completely sheer, which is ideal for wearing it on the face, but we wish the SPF was higher than 30.
  • EltaMD UV Sport Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen Sport Lotion : The mineral sunscreen stayed on our tester’s skin for the duration of a sweaty workout without transferring onto clothing. However, there is a slightly greasy residue and white cast after application that we didn’t love.
  • CeraVe Broad-spectrum Mineral Sunscreen Stick : The stick formula is similar to deodorant, so it’s a little thick and tacky, but it rubs in very smoothly and sheer. We love the small size for tossing in a purse or carry-on.

Over the course of two weeks, T+L tested 20 bottles of liquid, stick, and spray sunscreens. All of the bottles were intended to meet general carry-on liquid requirements that limit containers to 3.4 fluid ounces.

Whether our testers used the sunscreen at the beach, in the pool, or for any outdoor activity, we rated the formulas based on texture, opacity, water resistance, and transfer resistance. We applied the sunscreen at least seven times all over the body to get the most accurate usage impressions and to get an idea of how long the sunscreen could last for a vacation.

After thorough testing, our favorite sunscreens were easy to apply, rubbed on smoothly without a white cast leftover, and didn’t transfer when we put on clothes over the sunscreen. The best sunscreens didn’t come off instantly when the tester came into contact with sweat or water, and the formulas didn’t irritate the skin or leave a greasy residue. We rated the overall value of each sunscreen after testing was complete, uncovering the prices to evaluate the worth of the sunscreen compared to the price.

Tips for Buying Travel-size Sunscreen

Look at spf and uv protection.

The rule of thumb is to look for SPF 30 or higher. It can be easy to forget to reapply sunscreen after going in the water, so you’ll want to make sure you add more sunscreen after two hours or 80 minutes in the water.

Consider stick, liquid, or spray

Most sunscreens are in liquid form, but there are also sunscreens in sticks and aerosol spray, too. A stick can be easier to travel with — especially as an addition to your camping gear for kids — as you won’t have to worry about any liquid spilling (or, if you're flying, meeting the 3.4-ounce travel size requirement for carry-ons). No matter what kind of sunscreen you get, you’ll always want to keep your eye out for broad-spectrum protection, water resistance, and SPF 30 or higher.

Know the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreen

Mineral or physical sunscreen sits on top of the skin and acts as a reflection to ward off harmful sun rays, whereas chemical sunscreen absorbs the rays. Mineral sunscreen has ingredients like zinc or titanium dioxide that can be better suited for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Chemical sunscreen is usually a little bit thinner and goes on sheerer than mineral sunscreen, so you’ll want to factor in the differences depending on the ingredients and application you’re looking for in a sunscreen.

Although it varies by airline, the typical limit for liquids in a carry-on suitcase is 3.4 ounces. Usually, you can bring up to a 1-quart size bag full of liquids on an airplane, otherwise, you’ll want to check your bag if you have lots of liquids to bring.

Bringing an aerosol can like spray sunscreen in a carry-on is allowed on most airlines. However, the 3.4-ounce limit still applies, so if your spray is over the limit, you’ll need to check it to avoid potentially having to throw it away in the TSA security line .

Long considered more of a chore than a luxury, applying sunscreen has newfound appeal, thanks in part to the latest formulas on the shelves. The best sunscreen now sidesteps the biggest drawbacks, like a ghostly white finish and off-putting scent, and offer more elegance by way of a transparent appearance, weightless feel, and even the inclusion of nourishing ingredients. After all, diligent sunscreen application is easiest if you actually enjoy what you use—and these innovative formulas have succeeded in making that happen.

Our Top Picks

  • Best Face: EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 , $43
  • Best Body: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF 60 , $20
  • Best Lips: Cay Skin Isle Lip Balm SPF 30 , $15
  • Best Hands: Deborah Lippmann Rich Girl Broad Spectrum SPF 25 Hand Cream , $30
  • Best Chemical: Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 , $38
  • Best Mineral: Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide , $15
  • Best Spray: Sun Bum Original SPF 70 Sunscreen Spray , $17

On a surface level, all sunscreens have the same task: to minimize skin’s exposure to sunlight, and in doing so, reduce both the signs of photodamage (such as dark spots and fine lines) and the risk of skin cancer. Beyond that, though, there are many differences between them.

“Sunscreens work by either blocking and scattering the sun’s rays before they penetrate the skin or by absorbing the ultraviolet light before it damages the skin,” says Tina Alster, MD , a board-certified dermatologist in Washington, D.C. Moreover, they can differ in their level of protection, their additional benefits, and even the area of the body they’re meant to protect.

With that in mind, consider these the best sunscreens to consider for every need and preference.

UV Clear Face Sunscreen

Why We Love It: Regularly recommended by dermatologists, this sunscreen stands out for its lightweight, completely transparent formula, which allows it to blend seamlessly into all skin tones. It pairs sun protection with niacinamide, a powerful anti-inflammatory ingredient, as well as hyaluronic acid and vitamin C . We’re also partial to its fragrance-free, non-comedogenic formulation.

  • SPF Level: 46
  • Texture: Lightweight cream
  • Chemical or Physical: Both (9.0% zinc oxide, 7.5% octinoxate)

Best Body: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF 60

Image may contain: Bottle, Cosmetics, Sunscreen, Lotion, and Shaker

La Roche-Posay

Anthelios Clear Skin Sunscreen

Why We Love It: Designed for both face and body, this oil-free lotion has a dry-touch feel that leaves skin feeling smooth, fresh, and not at all greasy—which remains the case even in high temperatures and humidity. The formula also provides extra protection with the brand’s proprietary Cell-Ox Shield technology, which pairs UV filters with antioxidants that serve as a secondary line of defense against free radical damage.

  • SPF Level: 60
  • Chemical or Physical: Chemical (3% avobenzone, 15% homosalate, 5% octisalate, 7% octocrylene)

Best Lips: Cay Skin Isle Lip Balm SPF 30

Image may contain: Bottle, Lotion, Cosmetics, Dynamite, and Weapon

Isle Lip Balm SPF 30

Why We Love It: Historically, lip balms with sun protection have been lacking, with either a sticky feel, unappealing flavor, or both. That’s not the case with this clear balm, which feels slick (yet not greasy) and comes with a gourmand flavor of vanilla and brown sugar. The formula, which nourishes with a blend of vitamin E and shea oil, imparts a light-catching gloss.

  • SPF Level: 30
  • Texture: Clear gel
  • Chemical or Physical: Chemical (3% avobenzone, 10% homosalate, 5% octisalate)

Best Hands: Deborah Lippmann Rich Girl Broad Spectrum SPF 25 Hand Cream

Image may contain: Bottle, Lotion, and Cosmetics

Deborah Lippmann

Rich Girl Hand Cream

Why We Love It: As with the face, the hands are constantly exposed to the elements—but they rarely receive the same level of sun protection, which is why sun spots and thinning skin abound over time. This hand cream , which offers broad-spectrum protection, replenishes moisture with a combination of shea butter and avocado and jojoba oils without leaving a slippery feel.

  • SPF Level: 25
  • Texture: Rich yet fast-absorbing cream
  • Chemical or Physical: Chemical (2% avobenzone, 7.5% octinoxate, 5% octisalate)

Best Chemical: Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40

Image may contain: Bottle, Cosmetics, Sunscreen, and Lotion

Unseen Sunscreen

Why We Love It: Those resistant to traditional sunscreen formulas—white, goopy, and hard to blend—may find their match in this formula, a smooth gel that melts into skin in a matter of seconds. It’s unscented, oil-free, and completely transparent on all skin tones. It also works as a makeup primer, making it an ideal base beneath concealer and foundation.

  • SPF Level: 40
  • Texture: Gel
  • Chemical or Physical: Chemical (3% Avobenzone, 8% Homosalate, 5% Octisalate, 4% Octocrylene)

Best Mineral: Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide

Image may contain: Bottle, Cosmetics, Sunscreen, Lotion, Animal, Lizard, Reptile, and Perfume

Blue Lizard

Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen

Why We Love It: The advantage of mineral sunscreens is that they offer a far lower risk of reaction and irritation than their chemical counterparts. This formula takes it a step further; it's free from parabens and fragrance, making it ideal for even the most sensitive skin types. The plastic cap also responds to UV exposure, turning blue as a reminder to reapply sunscreen.

  • SPF Level: 50
  • Texture: Lightweight lotion
  • Chemical or Physical: Physical (10% zinc oxide, 8% titanium dioxide)

Best Spray: Sun Bum Original SPF 70 Sunscreen Spray

Image may contain: Bottle, Cosmetics, and Shaker

Original SPF 70 Sunscreen Spray

Why We Love It: What sunscreen sprays lack in precision, they offer in convenience. This particular mist—which delivers a sheer, dry-touch formula with natural compression, not aerosol—feels weightless on skin and adds additional protection with vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant to neutralize free-radical damage. (Still, consider rubbing the sunscreen in after misting it on to ensure complete coverage.)

  • SPF Level: 70
  • Texture: Dry-touch mist
  • Chemical or Physical: Chemical (3% avobenzone, 10% homosalate, 5% octisalate, 10% octocrylene)

Best Drugstore: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen SPF 70

Image may contain: Bottle, Cosmetics, Sunscreen, and Lotion

Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen

Why We Love It: Luxury can indeed be found in the drugstore aisles, as is the case with this Neutrogena sunscreen. It has a lightweight, not-at-all-greasy feel that can hold its own among the higher-end options, as well as an oil-free and non-comedogenic formulation that makes it suitable for those prone to breakouts.

  • Texture: Dry-touch lotion
  • Chemical or Physical: Chemical (3% avobenzone, 15% homosalate, 5% octisalate, 1% octocrylene)

Best for Mature Skin: Isdin Eryfotona Actinica Daily Lightweight Mineral SPF 50+ Sunscreen

Image may contain: Bottle, Lotion, Cosmetics, Perfume, and Sunscreen

Eryfotona Actinica Daily Sunscreen

Why We Love It: Not only does this innovative formula protect skin, but it actively repairs it as you wear it. (This added benefit is the work of a patented enzyme derived from plankton, which addresses dark spots, fine lines, and other frequent signs of sun damage.) It feels more like an emulsion than it does a cream, which enables it to sink into skin upon contact.

  • Texture: Watery emulsion
  • Chemical or Physical: 11% zinc oxide

Best Tinted: Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40

Image may contain: Cosmetics

Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40

Why We Love It: Streamline your routine with this multitasker, which brings together moisture, tint , and broad-spectrum sun protection in a single product. It replenishes skin with a blend of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and squalane, while non-nano zinc oxide shields skin from damage. You can choose from 30 shades of sheer coverage.

  • Texture: Slick serum
  • Chemical or Physical: Physical (12% non-nano zinc oxide)

Best Korean: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics SPF 50+ PA++++

Image may contain: Bottle, Lotion, Toothpaste, and Shaker

Beauty of Joseon

Why We Love It: Despite progress from stateside SPFs, Korean sunscreens are known for their formidable formulations like this sunscreen. It leaves skin with a dewy finish, and you can reapply it without it ever becoming cakey. It’s also infused with a combination of rice and fermented grain extracts, which are rich in amino acids and vitamins. But what really sets this formula apart is the PA rating; this measures protection against UVA rays, which are responsible for signs of aging. (SPF, meanwhile, only measures protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburns and skin cancer.) Its PA rating is P++++, which is the highest available in Korea.

  • Chemical or Physical: Chemical (Ethylhexyl triazone, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, diethylhexyl butamido triazone, methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol)

Sunscreen works differently depending on its formulation. There are two types, chemical and physical. For the former, “the skin absorbs the rays, and then the sunscreen converts that UV into heat,” says Ryan Turner, MD , a board-certified dermatologist and founder of TRNR Skin . “The skin then releases that heat.” For that reason, chemical sunscreens should be applied at least 15 minutes before you head outdoors, since the formula needs time to absorb into the skin.

Physical sunscreens, meanwhile, use minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to shield skin from UV rays. “When you apply this type of formula, it creates a protective coating on the skin off of which the UV reflects,” says Dr. Turner. “The UV rays basically bounce off the skin due to the minerals in the sunscreen.”

Everyone should use sunscreen. While those with melanin-rich skin may assume they have built-in protection—which is true to some extent— research shows that it’s comparable to an SPF of about 13, which isn’t enough to prevent skin cancer and sun damage (and far short of the SPF 30 recommended by experts).

According to the American Academy of Dermatology , your minimum number should be broad-spectrum SPF 30. SPF, short for sun protection factor, “refers to the amount of UV radiation it takes to produce a sunburn when wearing sunscreen, in comparison to how much UV exposure it takes for unprotected skin to get sunburned,” says Dr. Alster.

However, “higher-SPF products don’t necessarily protect skin better than lower-SPF ones,” she says. In theory, a sunscreen with SPF 50 should allow you to stay in the sun 50 times longer without burning than you could without sunscreen, but there are other factors at play. Ultimately, “that statistic varies depending on the person’s skin type and physical activity, the sun’s intensity, and the amount of sunscreen applied,” she says.

Ideally, you should use one ounce of sunscreen for your whole body. “That’s equivalent to the size of a golf ball or shot glass, which is much more than most people apply,” says Dr. Alster, who adds that she’s often surprised when patients inform her that they have leftover sunscreen following a beach vacation.

The standard advice is to reapply every two hours while you’re outdoors, or immediately after swimming or exercising, according to Dr. Alster. While some sunscreens may bill themselves as water-resistant, they’re not waterproof—so reapplication is necessary.

First, consider the texture, which is a matter of both personal preference and your skin type. For instance, “if you have acne-prone skin, you may want to avoid creamy or oily textures and instead seek out gels and powders, while dry skin will likely benefit from those richer textures,” says Dr. Turner. Meanwhile, sprays are ideal for those with speed in mind—for instance, parents applying to kids–but for regular use, stick with a lotion, since it can be difficult to get an even application with a spray, he says.

Also, think about what you plan to do outdoors. “The use of a sunscreen stick with zinc oxide on the face can help you avoid getting stinging in the eyes while sweating or swimming, which sometimes deters sunscreen usage,” says Dr. Turner. And finally, if you frequently apply sunscreen over makeup, he recommends a mineral-based SPF powder like Colorescience Sunforgettable . These are “so easy to toss in a bag and quite convenient to reapply,” he says.

The right filter depends on a few factors. For one, chemical sunscreens just tend to be more enjoyable to use. They’re “typically more cosmetically elegant in that they do not leave a white cast on the skin, and go on with lighter feel and quicker absorption,” says Dr. Turner. The downside, however, is that they can contribute to redness and irritation among those with sensitive skin and inflammatory skin conditions like rosacea and eczema. Plus, certain sunscreen filters, such as octinoxate and oxybenzone, may harm living coral reefs and have been categorized as “hormone disruptors,” meaning they may mimic or block natural hormone processes when they’re absorbed, says Dr. Turner. However, “the data on the effect in humans remains limited in understanding this potential impact on hormones,” he says.

Meanwhile, since mineral filters aren’t absorbed by skin and rather sit on the surface, creating a physical barrier, they’re considered safe. “They are also less likely to cause skin irritation or breakouts,” says Dr. Turner. And while they’ve historically had drawbacks—such as being difficult to blend and less resistant to water—their formulation has evolved over the years. Now, “there are mineral sunscreen formulas for everyone in every format, though a white cast may still be a drawback for the most melanated skin,” he says.

SPF measures UVB radiation, and therefore only accounts for how long it would take for you to burn with a given SPF versus without any sun protection. And, if they’re used correctly—meaning it’s been applied liberally and reapplied as needed—there’s little difference between an SPF 30 and SPF 50. However, human error can have an outsized impact. “The small difference may have some effect on your cumulative amount of UV radiation exposure if you are in the direct sun for long hours, or you are mostly exposed to the mid-day sun,” says Dr. Turner. “At SPF 30, you’ll be blocking your skin from about 97% of the sun’s rays. SPF 50 only bumps that coverage up to about 98%.” At the moment, there’s no level of SPF that can protect you from 100% of the sun’s rays, he says. Instead, diligent usage is your best bet for healthy, youthful skin.

"Finally finished my first bottle. It has lasted me several months, even with daily use. A little bit goes a long way. The sunscreen scent is very mild and disappears within a few minutes after applying. It comes on glowy/dewy but absorbs very quickly and leaves your skin looking and feeling smooth." -Christina

How much sunscreen should you use and how often do you need to apply it?

Slathering on sunscreen, especially on sunny days, is necessary to keep your skin safe from damage.

But with different brands, SPFs, formulas, and methods of applying, it can be difficult to decipher just how much sunscreen you need to keep protected from the sun’s strong rays.

Fortunately, most dermatologists recommend a few main sunscreen application tips to keep your skin safe from the unrelenting glare.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology ( AAD ), one of the most important things to know is how much sunscreen you need to apply.

Although most people are aware that sunscreen needs to be reapplied, knowing how much to use is an integral part of the equation – especially because the application process varies when it comes to different formulas.

As a general rule for lotions and creams, the AAD recommends following the guideline of one ounce, or enough sunscreen to fill a shot glass, and then adjusting from there depending on your body size.

It may seem like a lot, but a shot glass-full dollop of sunscreen is typically enough to cover the exposed areas of the body from head to toe.

Sunscreen sprays are often considered less of a hassle than lotions, but it also means you need to be especially careful when applying in order to get the full SPF amount – and to keep from missing a spot on your body.

The necessary amount of coverage for a spray suncreen to be effective requires at least six seconds of spraying in each spot – roughly four seconds more than most people use.

Those opting for spray sunscreen should also rub the formula into the skin after spraying, especially if you are already outdoors, as the method can result in uneven coverage and unprotected skin, according to the AAD.

With sticks, often used for facial coverage, applying generously all over the face at least twice is recommended – and remembering your ears and eyelids is key.

As for the SPF and traits to look for in a sunscreen, the AAD recommends choosing a sunscreen that is at least 30 SPF or higher and offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays - and applying 15 to 30 minutes before stepping outside.

When it comes to reapplying, the AAD advises people to reapply their sunscreen at least every two hours while outside, even when it is cloudy. If you are swimming or sweating, you should reapply more frequently, such as every time you exit the pool or ocean.

And before you head outside, make sure your sunscreen hasn't expired, as most formulas last about two to three years before they need to be replaced.

Does sunscreen expire? How much SPF is enough? Your burning questions, answered

Experts weigh in on everything to know about sunblock—from the difference between mineral and chemical varieties to when and how often you should be applying it.

vacationers relax under the shade of umbrellas on a pool deck.

We’ve all felt it: that moment the warmth of the sun’s rays becomes a bit too warm and the reality hits that we’ve got a sunburn. Most of the time, it leads to several hours or days of pain and discomfort. Over time, however, this sun exposure causes premature skin aging and cancers like melanoma.

In the last several decades, skin experts have stopped wondering if we should be wearing sunscreen (that answer is a resounding yes), but how much, when, and under what circumstances. More questions swirl about the benefits of different types of sunscreens and their relative safety for us and the environment.

“Skin cancer is on the rise. I diagnose it every day in my practice,” says Gregory Papadeas, a dermatologist based in Denver. He cites not only the depletion of the ozone layer, the part of the Earth’s atmosphere that helps absorb harmful ultraviolet rays, but also the increasing popularity of outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and cycling.

National Geographic talked to a range of dermatologists to get the lowdown on everything you need to know about sunblock, from A to Zinc oxide.

How important is wearing sunscreen?

Very, says Bruce Brod, a dermatologist at the University of Pennsylvania. But sunscreen is only one part of a more holistic strategy to prevent harmful sun exposure. The most effective strategy is to avoid the sun when it is most intense, typically between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Other options include wearing hats with brims at least four inches wide and wearing sun protective clothing. Although most clothing provides more sun protection than going out in bare skin, Brod recommends buying clothes with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of at least 30.

( Can aging be cured? Scientists are giving it a try .)

To check if an item you already own provides protection, hold it up to a light bulb. If it lets light through, it probably won’t provide much protection, especially if it’s gauzy or gets wet.

Burns aside, why should I be concerned about sun exposure?

For starters, that’s because UV rays are the leading cause of premature aging in skin, which includes wrinkles, sagging, and dryness, says Mona Gohara, a dermatologist at Yale University. Individuals with darker skin may also notice hyperpigmentation, or an uneven increase in skin color.

But what about getting a base tan? Will that protect me?

No. “Tans are your body's way of telling you that you've damaged the skin,” Gohara says. “There’s no such thing as a good base tan. That’s a fallacy.”

When it comes to SPF, is bigger always better?

A sunscreen’s SPF (short for Sun Protection Factor) is a measurement of how much solar energy (in the form of UVA and UVB rays) it takes to cause a sunburn in comparison compared to untreated skin when it’s used as directed. So wearing adequate amounts of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 means it will take 15 times more solar energy to cause a burn; an SPF of 30 would take 30 times more.

( Some animals make their own sunscreen .)

Current advice from the American Academy of Dermatology and the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

The important caveat is using the product as directed , and most of us don’t.

So when should I apply sunblock—and how much should I put on?

The amount of sunscreen applied under laboratory conditions is about 1 ounce. It’s about the size of a golf ball, or enough lotion to fill a shot glass. The average person uses around one-third that amount, according to Dawn Marie Davis, a dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic.

Although mineral sunscreens (more on them below) are effective immediately, chemical sunscreens need to be absorbed before they become effective. Besides not applying enough in the beginning, most people don’t reapply sunscreen frequently.

The Skin Cancer Foundation advises reapplying sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or heavy sweating, whichever comes first. This holds true regardless of a product’s SPF. Sunscreen of SPF100 provides more protection, not longer protection.

Do I need to wear sunscreen if I’m staying indoors?

DiAnne Davis, a medical and cosmetic dermatologist in Dallas, Texas, urges her patients to apply sunscreen every morning, as part of their normal, daily routine. Protecting your skin is as essential as brushing your teeth, she says, and making sunscreen a habit is the best way to ensure that you are protected 24/7/365.

And the “365” isn’t just for show. Davis says that people always need to consider sun protection, even in the winter, on cloudy days, and even, yes, when you’re indoors and near a window. While normal light bulbs and computer screens don’t damage your skin, certain types of UV rays can get through glass windows in cars and homes. Even if you’re not outside, your skin can still get damaged.

“Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender, or race,” she says.

Will sunblock prevent me from getting enough vitamin D?

Don’t worry about sunscreen use causing low vitamin D levels, says Dawn Marie Davis. As little as 15 minutes of sun exposure each week—the kind you’re likely to get walking to and from your car, on parts of your skin that are less than 100 percent protected—is adequate for vitamin D protection. Fortified foods and nutritional supplements are a far safer way to raise vitamin D levels than sun exposure, she said.

( The truth about immune-boosting supplements .)

What about mineral vs. chemical sunscreen. Are they safe?

Both mineral and chemical sunscreens prevent UV rays from harming your skin, but they do so in different ways. Mineral sunscreen lotions contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. These minerals sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays before they can cause damage. Chemical sunscreens contain oxybenzone or octinoxate, compounds then absorb the UV rays instead of your skin.

Mineral sunscreens have historically left a white cast on the skin when applied, although newer formulations have dramatically improved that harmless but unpopular issue, says Adele Haimovic, a dermatologist in New York City. She recommends mineral sunscreens for people with sensitive skin. Because they aren’t absorbed, they are less likely to cause reactions.

The Environmental Working Group and other consumer organizations have raised concerns about the safety of oxybenzone. They point to evidence that the chemical is an endocrine disruptor (a catch-all term for compounds that affect hormones and other functions of the endocrine system), and cite a January 2020 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association that found that six active ingredients in chemical sunscreen were absorbed in the body.

( How to figure out which sunscreens are best for you—and the planet .)

However, all the dermatologists who spoke with National Geographic affirmed the safety of chemical sunscreens. People who do have concerns about oxybenzone should use mineral sunscreen rather than refraining from any sun protection, Gohara says.

“If you're applying every two hours and applying in the right amount, it becomes a matter of personal preference,” she says. “The sunscreen that works best is the one that you're going to wear.”

Some sunscreen is labeled ‘reef-safe.’ What does this mean?

Some active ingredients in chemical sunscreen are also being identified as harmful to delicate coral reefs. It’s why Hawaii banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate in 2018. But Haimovic says that the issue is still an open question.

“More research is needed on this topic,” she says. With coral reefs under threat from so many sources, including climate change and pollution, it’s hard to know what impact sunscreen is having.

I’ve heard sunscreen is better in Europe and Korea . Is that true?

It’s complicated. But experts say that sunscreen in the U.S. is pretty good and most countries have similar rules to how they rate sun protection.

If I have darker skin, do I still need sunblock?

Absolutely, Davis says. Melanin is a skin pigment that serves as a natural sunscreen, she explains. The average SPF provided by melanin in people with more highly pigmented skin ranges from an SPF of 3 to an SPF of 13, far below recommended levels of SPF 30. What this means is that people of color have some extra sun protection but not enough to forgo sunscreen.

Do I need to worry about expiration dates on sunscreen?

Here, our expert advice was mixed. Mayo’s Davis says that consumers should pay close attention to expiration dates. Using expired sunscreen, she explains, raises the possibility that it may have lost some efficacy. Another concern? The growth of harmful bacteria.

Still, Gohara and Papadeas say that the dates on bottles should be taken with a grain of salt.

“If your sunscreen expires today, you can probably use it for another year,” Papadeas says. However, that’s only as long as the ingredients don’t begin to separate, which is a sign your sunscreen is losing efficacy.

So if you have a bottle that’s a little past its use-by date, it’s probably fine. The biggest concern Gohara has about expired sunscreen is that it’s a sign you’re probably not using enough.

“One bottle of sunscreen shouldn’t last you more than a couple of months if you’re using it correctly,” she says.

The 15 Best Tinted Sunscreens to Add to Your Morning Routine

Leave the house glowing with one of these skincare favorites

You may have already guessed that a tinted sunscreen is usually created with color pigments that lend to its “tint" without the threat of ghostly residue. “Most of the tinted sunscreens on the market provide mineral protection, as the tint prevents any potential white cast from the UV blockers,” board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner explains. “It’s much less common to find a tinted chemical sunscreen.”

This cult-classic mineral sunscreen uses a blend of zinc and titanium oxides to protect against damaging UVA/UVB rays. Its lightweight, waterlike consistency sinks right in, with a universal tint powered by iron oxide spheres that enhance skin’s natural tone.

One satisfied customer writes: “Lightweight, watery consistency that is easy to spread, wears well under makeup, and keeps me protected. I love that my skin feels more moisturized than it does tacky like some sunscreens.” — Stephanie

Mineral sunscreens tend to be less irritating for people with sensitive skin, and this SPF 50 titanium oxide version from La Roche is no exception. While some mineral sunscreens can be thick and hard to spread over the skin, this one has a non-greasy, fluid texture that absorbs quickly, leaves behind a matte finish, and layers well under makeup. Another pro is that the sunscreen is formulated with the brand’s signature thermal spring water to soothe the skin.

One satisfied customer writes: “I have very dry, sensitive, reactive skin. I don’t like when sunscreen feels heavy or sticky on my skin. This sunscreen was moisturizing throughout the day. It doesn’t feel heavy or sticky. I finally found a tinted mineral sunscreen that works for me!!!” — DWK

Although it’s designed to be buildable, this tinted SPF 50 sunscreen provides a natural finish that makes skin look healthier and more even with just one layer. Along with mineral and chemical protection, it’s also formulated with hyaluronic-acid-infused clay to help balance the skin’s oil and hydration levels. Plus, the ingredient ectoin is key in shielding your face from external stressors like pollution and radiation.

One satisfied customer writes: “This is the best skin tint on the market right now. Looks like skin, but better. Wears beautifully and you don’t need to powder if you have dry skin. Natural finish and not too dewy, just a perfect finish!” — TalyiaSharnise

SkinMedica’s Total Defense + Repair SPF 34 is a personal favorite for Jeanine B. Downie , a board-certified dermatologist based in Montclair, New Jersey. In addition to evening skin tone, the chemical sunscreen is enhanced with an antioxidant complex that helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve skin texture over time.

One satisfied customer writes: “I have tried many other broad-spectrum sunscreens at the advice of my dermatologist. This one is by far the best! It’s extremely lightweight and spreads evenly with ease. The fact that it’s tinted is wonderful. I don’t have to wear heavy makeup after applying this tinted sunscreen because the coverage is so good. This is a huge plus during the hot and humid months of the year!” — Cindy

This popular pick is another of Downie’s favorites. It’s hydrating, fragrance-free, reef-safe, and provides a long-lasting tint to boot. Its mineral-based formula offers broad-spectrum sun protection and is even water-resistant for up to 40 minutes—a bonus if you plan to exercise outdoors this spring and summer.

One satisfied customer writes: “I have used this for over two years. It is light and protective and gives my skin a bright and dewy glow. I love it!” — Elizabeth M

This sunscreen’s vanishing tint aims to mask redness, and is best for medium to olive skin tones. Its mineral formula uses a combination of zinc and titanium oxides to keep skin protected, plus vitamins E and C for a hydration and brightening boost. Ingredients like safflower extract add soothing qualities for those with sensitive skin, and diamond powder finishes off the formula to leave skin glowing.

One satisfied customer writes: “This is my new favorite sunscreen. I have sensitive skin, and this does not irritate it at all and does not sting my eyes. I was worried about the tint being too dark as I have extremely fair skin, but it blends in beautifully.” — MisssAsh

Here's a tinted mineral sunscreen that is perfect for anyone in search of a sun protection product with serious coverage benefits. SunnyDays’ buildable SPF 30–infused formula looks and feels like a lightweight liquid foundation (only better) and is perfect for masking redness and reducing the appearance of dark spots while allowing your natural skin to shine through. And since it’s made without alcohol and fragrance, it’s also a good match for sensitive and reactive skin types.

One satisfied customer writes: “Love this stuff!! It’s beautiful on its own and gives a beautiful glow. When I wear makeup with it, it’s a great primer!” — sheeba84

Its non-greasy, creamy formula is also infused with an antioxidant complex featuring vitamins A, C, and E, which protects skin from environmental aggressors for up to 12 hours. The “smart tone” in its name refers to the formula’s self-adjusting tint that complements and color-corrects most skin tones.

One satisfied customer writes: “Purchased for honeymoon trip to Jamaica where I knew, due to heat, I wouldn’t want to wear a lot of makeup. However, I definitely wanted protection from the sun. This product was exactly what I needed!” — Rebecca D.

Its peach pigment aims to brighten skin while seamlessly offsetting the white cast of zinc oxide.

  • Dr. Jeanine B. Downie is a board-certified dermatologist and director of Image Dermatology PC in Montclair, New Jersey.
  • Dr. Joshua Zeichner is a board-certified dermatologist, an associate professor of dermatology, and director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

What are the benefits of tinted sunscreen?

best tinted sunscreens

On top of protecting skin from UVA/UVB rays and blue light, the pigment in tinted sunscreen helps provide a light level of coverage. For some, tinted sunscreen may completely replace a base makeup product like foundation or concealer. “Tinted sunscreen is a sunscreen that has a bit of color/added pigments to add a sheer tint to it,” Downie notes. “The benefit of tinted sunscreen is, you do not have to put on bronzer or foundation.”

What should you look for in a tinted sunscreen?

best tinted sunscreens

The most important characteristic to look for in a tinted sunscreen is sun protection. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection with an SPF 30 or higher. If you’re shopping for a tinted sunscreen, Downie recommends looking for a product with a tint that complements your complexion.

If you’re looking for a tinted sunscreen that doubles as a foundation, make sure the product promises some level of coverage. “When choosing a sunscreen, look for one that provides additional benefits that address your skin's needs, whether it is to brighten, hydrate, reduce shine, or mattify the skin,” Zeichner adds. “Many of these products bridge the line between skincare and makeup.”

How much tinted sunscreen should you apply?

best tinted sunscreens

To get the full SPF protection listed on the label, tinted sunscreen should be applied just like regular sunscreen. For the face, Zeichner recommends applying about a quarter-sized dollop. You should also reapply every two hours if you’re going outdoors, or more frequently if you’re sweating or going in water. Remember to check your sunscreen’s label to see how long the formula is water-resistant.

What should I pack in my diaper bag for diaper changes on the go?

The obvious staple in your diaper bag will be diapers! Consider the duration of your outing with your baby. For short trips lasting a couple of hours, a few diapers may suffice. However, for full-day outings, it's wise to pack extra. Pro-Tip : always pack a couple more diapers than you anticipate needing!

A portable wipe dispenser is also crucial! Leave the bulky pack of wipes at home and only take enough to last you through the day. This will save space in your bag for all the other essentials.

Pro-Tip : Fold your portable changing mat around your portable wipe dispenser and one diaper. Pop your diaper cream in there too! When your baby is ready for a diaper change, you won't have to search your bag for everything you need – simply grab the mat, and you're ready to go!

Diaper blow-outs happen, and while inconvenient, they should be expected. One of the most important items to pack is an extra outfit for baby and at least one spare onesie. Onesies fold small and don't occupy much space. If you can't fit a full set of clothes, make sure you at least have an extra onesie on hand! You may want to store that extra onsie rolled up within your portable changing mat, keeping it close by during diaper changes!

Nuna Changing Bag

What  should I pack in my diaper bag for feeding on the go?

If you're out for an extended period of time, chances are your baby will get hungry along the way. Even if you don't plan on being out during feeding time, it's always wise to pack at least one meal. You never know what delays you might encounter.

Whether you're a nursing mama or opt for formula feeding, we have some pro-tips for you!

For feeding in general, make sure to pack at least one bib and burp cloth to help manage messes on the go.

Nursing moms should pack a nursing cover and consider including a set of nursing pads and nipple cream for their own comfort. If breast milk is served out of a bottle, here's a Pro-Tip : Fill the bottle with breast milk before leaving for the outing. Opt for a cooler storage bag that can clip to the carry straps of the diaper bag and hang on the outside. This ensures it doesn't take up space inside the bag!

Moms who are nursing on the go should also remember to pack water for themselves. Staying hydrated during nursing sessions is crucial for their own well-being!

Pro-Tip : For formula feeding families: Measure out the formula and pour it into empty bottles before leaving for the outing. When feeding time comes, only water needs to be added! Make sure to pack the appropriate water separately as well!

If your little one has moved on to solid food, packing store-bought baby food is convenient! You may also want to pack an extra bib as these feedings can be messy. Don't forget a baby-sized spoon! Pro-Tip : Pack a small baggie to put the used spoon and bib into so they don't make a mess of the diaper bag !

For parents planning to take along homemade baby food, utilize the cooler bag tip mentioned earlier!

What should  I pack in my diaper bag to keep baby happy on the go?

Pacifiers are excellent for soothing babies! A pacifier clip is a great way to ensure that your baby always has access to their pacifier. However, even with clips, pacifiers can still get lost. Clips might get pulled off, or the pacifiers themselves can become unsecured from the clip, leaving parents to watch seemingly in slow motion as the beloved pacifier hits the ground! To save the day in these moments, keep a stash of pacifiers and an extra pacifier clip in the diaper bag . Store them in pacifier travel cases or a baggie to keep them clean within the diaper bag . Pro-Tip : Pack extra pacifiers in easy-to-access outer pockets – you'll want to keep these close!

Keeping small toys in the diaper bag can keep your baby entertained on the go. Small rattles, soft books, or their favorite lovey are smart go-tos. Swap out the toys as your baby develops and their interests change!

What should I pack in my diaper bag to keep baby protected from weather on the go?

Pack temperature-appropriate clothing articles, such as an extra hat and dress baby in layers. Newborns should always have a hat to prevent heat loss through their head. Opt for winter hats in colder months and sun hats for babies out in warmer weather for sun protection. Additionally, sunscreen is a wise addition to keep on hand in the diaper bag !

Pro Tip : Regardless of the temperature or weather, a lightweight blanket is a key necessity to keep packed in the diaper bag . They provide a ton of utility – obviously as the comfort of a lightweight blanket for baby. They can also act as a nursing cover, burp cloth, changing mat, or even a barrier when laying baby down on any surface.

Pro-Tip : Pack a travel-size first aid kit, especially when on the go with toddlers!

How should I organize my diaper bag ?

JuJuBe Diaper Bag

Keeping a well-organized diaper bag is crucial for an enjoyable day out with baby! Utilize all the pockets and compartments. Pro-Tip : Don't be afraid to add more pouches into your bag. Every item should have a home! Organize the diaper bag in sections: keep all feeding gear together and all diaper changing items together. Use exterior pockets to house essentials you will need easy access to, such as pacifiers and personal items like cellphones, wallets, and keys. Leave the purse at home and funnel everything into the one diaper bag !

Pro-Tip : As tired as you may be upon arriving home with your baby, make it a habit to immediately unpack and restock your bag! Many staples can live inside the diaper bag , such as toys for on the go, travel-sized diaper cream, sunscreen, and baby lotion. Refill the portable wipe container, replace any used diapers, and if you used your backup clothes, replace the extra onesie, etc. Starting these habits from the first outing with your baby will ensure they become second nature as your journey with your baby progresses. Parents will quickly become experts in diaper bag packing!
