Travel Lite RVs: 8 Facts Owners & Buyers Should Know

' src=

Large-scale motorhomes are not suited to everyone, and some RVers prefer owning smaller motorhomes that are easier to maneuver and offer more flexible travel options.

The Travel Lite RV company has been in business for quite some time and has become popular amongst RVers who prefer smaller-scale motorhomes. With their reputation for excellence often preceding them, many might consider themselves knowledgable on many aspects of this motorhome company.

However, there is a fair amount to be learned about the Travel Lite RV company before deciding on purchasing one of their models:

Has Travel Lite RV Company Ever Closed Temporarily:

In 2019 the Travel Lite RV company closed its doors for four weeks. It was reported that the RV company had closed permanently, but this was not true. Shortly after the news surfaced, the company released a statement announcing they were undergoing restructuring and halting production temporarily.

1. Where Are Travel Lite RVs Made?

The Travel Lite RV company has its headquarters and primary manufacturing facility located in Syracuse, Indiana.

The company was not always situated in Syracuse, Indiana, as it was actually founded in New Paris, Indiana.

As is offered by many motorhome manufacturers, the Travel Lite RV company offers future clients the option to tour the factory and learn how the various models are produced.

For some, this is important as they wish to know how a model is manufactured and what materials are used before purchasing a motorhome.

If you would like to schedule a tour, contact the company either by phone or through their website!

2. Who Owns the Travel Lite Company?

Unlike big brand names in the motorhome industry Travel Lite hasn’t been operating for numerous decades.

However, the company has quickly risen in the ranks and become a name that RVers recognize. The Travel Lite RV company was founded in 1989 by Larry Johns, who decided to specialize in truck campers and lightweight travel trailers.

In 2015, Larry’s son and daughter-in-law Dustin and Lindsey Johns took over.

With the restructuring, the company is under new management, with Travel Lite being led by Ryan Rebar, its COO, and general manager. This change came after Dustin Johns left the company in 2019.

Johns and his wife are no longer part owners of the Travel Lite company as local investors now own the company.

3. What Types and Sizes of RVs Do Travel Lite Produce?

who manufactures travel lite campers

Travel Lite primarily manufactures a range of truck campers and travel trailers.

The company started in the niche truck camper market when they began production in 1989, but in 2011, they decided to branch out, as mentioned previously.

Their companies products have been well received in the RV market despite the company having a brief period of uncertainty when they closed temporarily for four weeks in 2019.

After the restructuring event, Travel Lite has come back stronger than ever with the goal in mind to meet the demand of consumers.

Should you want to learn the different motorhome sizes and weight ranges, you can look at the truck camper and travel trailer categories the company offers below:

  • 2021 Rayzr Truck Campers: 6 feet and 4 inches with a dry weight of 1186 pounds to 7 feet and 6 inches with a dry weight of 1264 pounds.
  • 2021 Extended Stay Truck Campers: 14 feet and 5 inches with a dry weight of 2066 pounds to 16 feet and 4 inches with a dry weight of 1865 pounds.
  • 2021 Super Lite Truck Campers: 10 feet and 2 inches to 11 feet and 9 inches with no weight ratings currently given as per the company’s website.
  • 2021 Rove Lite Ultra Lightweight Travel Trailers: 15 feet and 4 inches with a weight rating ranging between 1510 pounds and 1676 pounds.

4. Do Travel Lite Make a Toy Hauler?

Presently the Travel Lite RV company does not design, manufacture, or sell toy haulers.

Their focus has been on constructing quality lightweight travel trailers and innovative truck campers.

It is unknown if the company will eventually branch out into toy haulers as they only recently in 2011 decided to manufacture travel trailers.

5. What Are the Smallest RVs from Travel Lite?

who manufactures travel lite campers

Several smaller models are available for purchase, with a range of truck campers and new 2021 travel trailers coming soon.

If you’re looking to learn the smallest models that the Travel Lite company manufactures, you can look at the few options we have provided:

  • Rayzr truck camper full kitchen model – 6 feet and 4 inches.
  • Super Lite truck camper 590SL – 10 feet and 2 inches.
  • Super Lite truck camper 625SL – 10 feet and 7 inches.

Why You Should Choose A Smaller Motorhome:

  • Smaller travel trailers and motorhomes weigh less and are easier to tow on uncertain terrain.
  • They fit a large range of cars and trucks because they are usually lightweight.
  • Smaller travel trailers and truck campers cost less and are more affordable.
  • With smaller travel trailers, you won’t use as much fuel as lightweight trailers won’t cause your vehicle to guzzle as much gas.
  • Many people prefer smaller travel trailers and motorhomes because they are easier to maintain. You won’t need to repair many tires, nor will you need to service numerous slides continuously.

6. What Are the Biggest RVs from Travel Lite?

who manufactures travel lite campers

In truth, many people, including seasoned RV owners and first-time motorhome buyers , will want to choose a larger RV.

This is largely because it will allow them more space should they need it. Should you be interested in discovering what the largest models are that the company produces, you can look at the few models we have listed.

  • Rove Lite travel trailer 14FD – 15 feet and 4 inches.
  • Extended Stay truck camper 840SBRX – 16 feet and 4 inches.
  • Extended Stay truck camper 960RX – 16 feet and 1 inch.

Why You Should Choose A Larger Motorhome:

  • Larger motorhomes are more spacious and give the occupants more space freedom to move about while traveling.
  • Big motorhomes like fifth wheels and travel trailers are excellent for larger families who want to travel together inexpensively when they go on holiday.
  • Many larger motorhomes provide ample storage for all your outdoor and indoor gear requirements.
  • Larger motorhomes like travel trailers and Class As come with superior heating and cooling systems in place to ensure you are comfortable year-round.
  • Larger RVs and some smaller models have a life expectancy of approximately 20 years, with many lasting longer than that if they are maintained. This makes a larger motorhome an ideal investment option for large families or those who like to entertain and travel frequently.

7. What Are The Most Popular RVs by Travel Lite?

who manufactures travel lite campers

Should you be looking to purchase a new motorhome, you are likely interested in learning what the most popular models are available on the market currently.

For many, purchasing a specific popular motorhome is their preferred choice because they know they have a higher likelihood of buying a durable, reputable, and long-lasting model.

There are hundreds of popular models available in the RV market, so it can be incredibly challenging to determine which motorhome type, make, and model is best suited for you.

It is also hard to uncover what the popular RVs on offer are from a specific motorhome company.

We have decided to try and shorten the amount of time you spend sifting through motorhomes.

Below are a few of the Travel Lite motorhome company’s most popular models on offer:

  • Extended Stay Truck Camper – 890RX.
  • Super Lite Truck Camper – 626XLS.
  • Rayzr Truck Camper – Full kitchen model.

What Makes RVs So Popular Statistically?

It’s estimated that more than 89% of people who the RVIA surveyed stated that their main reason for purchasing an RV was because they wanted an easier way for them and their families to go camping.

According to Statistica, one in every five Americans prefer hiking and camping trips that involve a motorhome.

Furthermore, motorhomes have become very popular over the last decade because they offer individuals and families a cheaper alternative to booking in at an accommodation.

It’s estimated that opting to stay in a motorhome instead of a hotel or bed other accommodation forms can be up to 60% cheaper for holidaymakers.

8. Are Travel Lite RVs For All Four Seasons?

In short, yes, many of the Travel Lite motorhome models are capable of four-season travel.

However, the company’s models leave much to be desired as they don’t come with air conditioning units.

The travel trailer models come with 20,000 BTU furnaces which make them capable of traveling in winter, but they won’t be as comfortable as other motorhomes in summer or winter travel.

Although you can utilize many of the brand’s motorhomes for summer and winter travel, it will largely be at your own risk as they are not specifically designed to be four seasonal.

RV PRO

A New Dawn for Travel Lite

With new ownership and leadership, the rv manufacturer is dialing in its products to its selection of truck campers and the recently introduced rove lite ultra-lite trailer..

Travel Lite

As with other leaders at Travel Lite RV, Keith Lessner wears a lot of hats. In addition to managing all North American accounts and establishing new dealer relationships as the national sales manager, he works in product development and has a myriad of other responsibilities.

“I’m not a ‘job description’-type guy – I do whatever it takes to move the company forward and grow,” he says. “The reality is that Travel Lite had it a little rough for a while, which is no secret, and now we’re rebuilding.”

Travel Lite RV, based in Syracuse, Ind., is now owned by a group of investors and its board of directors.

“Basically, our job is to produce a quality product that people can enjoy the great outdoors with – that’s our mission. We take a lot of pride in what we do,” Lessner says. “We’re fortunate because our board is extremely receptive and lets us experiment and try new things – and we have a really solid core of dealer partners who have faith in us, which is so important.”

Travel Lite has two product lines: truck campers and travel trailers.

“We like to stay in our niche and remain true to our ultra-lite offerings,” Lessner says. “There’s no need for us to expand to larger units and go toe-to-toe with the big guys. Everything we’re going to do will be lightweight.”

Travel Lite

Capitalizing on Ultra-Lites as a New Niche

Lessner says that ultra-lites are a growing segment, as people become increasingly environmentally conscious with smaller vehicles and hybrids.

“The towing rating keeps going down and the gas mileage keeps going up. And there was a big hole in the ultra-lite segment at our price point and weight category,” he says.

Having also worked in RV retail sales for 15 years, Lessner says he would often encounter potential customers walking through the door and asking what they could tow with their smaller vehicles.

“I had to tell them we had nothing to offer other than a pop-up, which they didn’t want,” he says.

It was a natural evolution for Travel Lite to add ultra-lites to its truck camper offerings after speaking with its dealer partners – and the segment knows no bounds as to age and income demographics, according to Lessner.

“The phone calls I field are from older, retired folks to younger generations with small families,” he says. “The demand is all over the place. We saw a hole, and we said, ‘Let’s fill it.’”

Travel Lite’s truck campers kept the company “on life support” as it rebuilt and launched its Rove Lite RVs. The Rayzr truck camper series, which is a “weekender” with basic living quarters for pickups the size of a Ford Ranger or Chevy Colorado, is joined by Travel Lite’s Extended Stay truck camper, with four models that require a 3/4-ton pickup or larger.

Breaking New Ground with the Rove Lite

The Rove Lite ultra-lightweight travel trailer series, however, is in a “class of its own,” Lessner says.

Travel Lite

After making its debut at the 2021 Florida RV SuperShow and partnering with General RV, the three units the manufacturer had on display sold immediately after the event.

“Then, General RV ordered another 36,” Lessner says. “Our overall feedback has been amazing, and every dealer has nothing but good things to say about them. They’re selling like crazy – it’s fun to experience.”

The Rove Lite is constructed with a brand-new, innovative Hydro-Lite material for its sidewalls. “We’ve also eliminated using wood in the sidewalls, floors and ceilings, which is beneficial for weight considerations and water intrusion,” Lessner says. “Everything in our construction is impervious to water, so there’s no delamination and nowhere

for mold to form – the resistance to mold is much stronger than anything with wood in it.”

He adds that no other manufacturer is using the Hydro-Lite technology presently, which was developed with Travel Lite’s supplier, Jasper Plastics. It’s constructed with one-piece gel-coat fiberglass with 2-pound, fire-retardant foam and Azdel composite panels, which are all vacuum-bonded together with epoxy. The entire skin is framed in aluminum. The ceiling also is constructed with a one-piece gel coat fiberglass.

“Jasper is located right down the street from us. They’re not just suppliers – they’re partners,” Lessner says. “All of our suppliers, including Torklift, are great and they’ve been very supportive and understanding as the company has transitioned and moved forward.”

Travel Lite

A Rove Lite base unit can be built with a weight of about 1,500 pounds and, depending on options, can come in the ballpark of 1,700 pounds. Three floorplans are available: the 14BH (MSRP: $20,999), 14FD (MSRP: $19,999) and 14FL (MSRP: $19,999).

The Rove features room for two batteries, allowing RVers the capability for extended stays. The floors avoid a foam construction, which can compress over time with foot traffic, and instead uses a 3/4-inch composite honeycomb material that also offers rigidity to the unit.

Exterior storage units are also accessible from the interior, and optional exterior features include

Travel Lite

speakers and a power awning. Standard are exterior power outlets, LED outdoor lighting, separate flushes for the 30-gallon gray tank and the 5-gallon black tank (not a cassette toilet), and side-mounted air conditioning units (to avoid rooftop units and potential leaking risks).

The interior features a standard wet bath with foot-flush toilet, cargo-netted storage (rather than doors for light weighting), and a three-way refrigerator that can be powered by either gas, electric or 12-volt battery.

“We’re small enough that we can turn on a dime when it comes to design changes and innovations recommended to us from our dealer partners and customers,” Lessner says. “It doesn’t take an act of Congress – there are really just three of us who make the decisions and we’re nimble enough that we can make changes to production inside of a week if we want to. Our operations manager, P.J. Reidenbach, is fantastic, and makes things happen. I don’t know what we would do without him.

“COO and General Manager Ryan Rebar and I are both sales guys, and we can come up with some pretty crazy ideas, and P.J. is there for us to tell us what will and won’t work,” he adds. “Most often, though, he’ll find a way – we gave him a week-and-a-half to build three prototypes and he got it done.”

Lessner has personally taken prototype units out for test runs for evaluation and assessments. “I towed one prototype 6,500 miles on dealer visits just to figure out what holds up and what doesn’t, so we could make tweaks and make overall improvements to the chassis. If we’re going to sell it, we want to know how well-designed it is,” he says. “The Rove is the culmination of all that hard work and listening to our dealers.”

The Biden Administration’s plans for infrastructure improvements is on Lessner’s radar and how it will affect the RV industry, as well as those who enjoy RVing. Equally important are campground updates and improvements.

“If we’re selling RVs and people have a tough time traveling or finding a place to camp, then what are we doing? And if there’s anything good that came out of COVID, it’s that people are getting back to their roots and their families,” Lessner says. “From my personal experience, we took our kids camping for a four-day trip but didn’t come home until four weeks later. RVing has brought us all closer.”

Travel Lite

Travel Lite’s sales goals for 2021 are to produce 1,300 truck campers and 1,500 travel trailers. Depending on the week, the company staffs between 35 and 55 employees.

“We’re just a bunch of guys trying to make it. It’s all hands-on decks, and we’re making it happen,” Lessner says. “I’m humbled by the opportunity that we’ve been given and the relationships I’ve been able to cultivate and grow – from our dealers and suppliers to our customers.

“If you do the right thing by your people, then success will follow and it will help us grow,” he adds. “This is just the tip of the iceberg for us – it’s an open road.”

10 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers For 2023

' src=

  • RV Trailers and Motorhomes

Consider the GVWR (not the UVW)

Many RV manufacturers tout the UVW (unloaded vehicle weight) of their trailers. But adding cargo like fresh water, propane tank(s), food, clothing, bicycles, and other camping equipment to the trailer can add hundreds of pounds to that UVW number.

GVWR is the weight to know when buying a trailer for a lightweight truck or passenger car tow vehicle.

Knowing the GVWR of small campers is the key to safe towing on road or while off-the-grid camping. Now, let’s dive into our list of the best lightweight travel trailers for 2023.

The 10 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers (Under 6,000 Pounds GVWR)

Travel Lite Falcon GT 24BH Road Test.

The travel lite falcon gt 24bh is an ultra-cool ultra-light.

W ith so many young families looking for an affordable entry-level travel trailer that’s suitable for towing behind a mid-size family van, pickup, or SUV, we turned to our friends Rene and Pat Stornebrink at Under The Stars RV in Erin, Ontario, for some suggestions. Under The Stars RV has just celebrated the grand opening of a new location, with expanded parts, service, and sales facilities to serve their growing customer base, and they carry several RV lines focusing on the needs of the young and active RV enthusiasts.

One of the coolest units on the list of family-friendly RVs is the ultralight 2018 Falcon GT 24BH from Travel Lite – a family-owned company that is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018.

The Falcon GT 24BH is the largest of the fleet of ultralights from Travel Lite, and it is available in a trio of trim levels – the Falcon Fire, the Falcon Eclipse, and the Falcon GT, which we selected for this road test feature. The trailers all sport different interior décor packages – the Fire motif has red neon accent lighting, the Eclipse has a very cool blue interior flair, and the GT has a green accent lighting package. You can turn the accent lights on or off, as you prefer.

The Green Accent Lights in the Travel Lite Falcon can be toggled on or off

There are several very innovative features in this ultralight trailer line. For example, the Travel Lite Falcon GT has a smart electric tongue jack levelling system – it remembers how high you set the jack when hitching and unhitching, making each process a one-touch delight.

We were attracted to the Falcon GT for several reasons. As an ultra-light travel trailer, it tips the scales at just 3,215 pounds unloaded, with a hitch weight of just 345 pounds – this is well within the towing capability of a wide range of pickups, SUVs, and family vans, when suitably equipped with a weight distributing hitch.

Construction

The Travel Lite line is designed and built to be affordable – it utilizes good quality materials, and the construction quality is very good. The trailer carries a full two-year manufacturer’s warranty, and there is an extensive network of dealers throughout North America, including quite a few Canadian dealers, so you are never going to be far from a servicing dealer if you should require a repair or an adjustment.

Falcon GT interior floor plan

The Falcon GT package is a premiere décor selection with custom colour coordinated interior neon lights above the slide out and beneath the dinette seats, custom GT stitching on the dinette seat, upgraded booming kicker speakers and stereo, a large 5 cu. ft. refrigerator with separate freezer, and a 32″ indoor/outdoor TV. The Falcon GT package is described by the factory reps as the ultimate “never needing anything else” package.

The Falcon GT comes with twin 20-pound LP tanks, and twin coach batteries, which is unusual for a trailer of this size.

On the Road

One thing you notice when examining the exterior of this trailer is that the unit is just 7’ wide, but the single axle is a wide-track design. This provides a very distinct advantage for highway handling, and this is further enhanced by the use of 18” aluminum wheels with wide Michelin radial tires. We found the ride and handling of the trailer to be excellent – the tongue weight of just 345 pounds is well within the capacity of most family vehicles.

Falcon GT towed by a Nissan Titan pickup

The Travel Lite engineers have taken the roadability of this trailer very seriously – not only are the tires, rims, axles, and electric brakes top quality for a trailer of this size and weight, there is a black diamond plate rock guard to protect the lower portion of the front cap, and similar material is used for the wheel fenders.

In the Campground

Once you arrive at your campsite, it is a very simple process to unhitch, level and stabilize the trailer using the scissor type jacks, and hook up your water, sewer electrical, and entertainment systems. The Falcon GT features several exterior compartments, including a large front pass-through storage compartment, and all of these storage areas are outfitted with lighting and access latches that are well suited to a vehicle of this type and price point.

The RV systems are very well equipped for a vehicle of this size and price range, with twin 20 lb. LP gas bottles, two deep-cycle 12-volt RV coach batteries, and a 40-amp AC/DC converter.

The single-entry door is equipped with a gas strut to hold it open, and there is an illuminated assist handle on the left side of the doorway. We were surprised to see that you could only unfold the entry steps when the door was closed – this may be a safety feature – it certainly makes sense, although we have not seen this on other trailers that we have reviewed recently. The entry steps are also equipped with LED lighting – a very welcome feature!

The Falcon GT package includes some premium options, like the 12' awning, and the stealthy grey metallic exterior. Yes, those are Michelin tires - and they ride great!

Our test unit was equipped with a 12-foot awning, very nicely colour coordinated to the exterior gray slate Falcon GT motif.

Entertaining at the campsite is a pleasant experience, with an optional awning to provide shade and marine grade waterproof exterior stereo speakers to channel your favourite tunes. The upgrade exterior speakers have LED lights – another very cool feature that sets this trailer apart from the typical RV in this category.

Comfort and Convenience

While the Falcon GT is a compact model, the use of a dinette slide-out section significantly enhances your interior living space. The floorplan is a clever design – with the dinette slide in the retracted position for travelling, you can easily walk through the trailer, and access the galley, the master bedroom and the bathroom. Touch a switch and in a matter of seconds, the dinette extends, and you can enjoy the full interior comfort of the trailer.

The modern galley in the Falcon GT is fully equipped with aluminum and tempered glass doors and a lightweight but durable countertop.

The Falcon GT 24BH sleeps up to six people, with a large master bed, a convertible dinette, and two bunk beds at the rear of the trailer. The floorplan is a bunkhouse style, and the two bunks at the rear of the trailer are certain to be popular with the kids – but we had to try them out, and we are happy to report that the bunks are quite spacious – more than large enough to accommodate an adult in comfort.

With the Falcon GT slide extended, you can see the space in the rear bunk area, the front queen size bed, and the spacious galley countertop.

Each bunk has a large slider window, a charging station for your USB devices, as well as GFI power outlets. There is a storage compartment built into each bunk, and the lower bunk has two large under mattress storage compartments, an ideal place to stow your clothes and gear.

The dinette converts into a single bed, and the table has two pedestals for greater stability. Cushions are vinyl clad and should be very easy to clean.

The Falcon GT dinette slide gives this trailer extra interior space. With the dinette seats up you can enjoy a meal, watch the 32" TV, and relax after a day on the road.

Storage compartments under the dinette seats are equipped with both interior and exterior access – a brilliant idea that we very rarely see in an RV design, and the accent lights are placed under the dinette benches, making a very interesting ambiance in the evening.

The trailer has a very efficient 18,000 BTU LP gas furnace, with ducted heat at the base of the dinette and galley. We tested the trailer in sub-zero temperatures, and when we fired up the furnace to take the interior pictures and video, it only took about five minutes for the 24BH to reach a comfortable room temperature.

For your comfort during the warm summer days, the Falcon GT can be equipped with a 13.5M BTU roof air conditioner, our test model had a Dometic low-profile unit that we have seen on many RV models – we did not fire up the air conditioner on this particular unit, as the ambient temperature was already too cold!

The 24BH has a 6-gallon hot water heater, which is plenty of comfort for the interior and exterior showers and the galley sink. The water tank capacities are excellent for a small family, with 31-gallon fresh water tank, 30-gallon grey water tank, and 30-gallon black water tank.

The Travel Lite Falcon GT is equipped with an LP gas detector and a smoke detector, for your safety.

In the Galley

The galley features a molded Granicote fiberglass countertop with stainless steel sink and a two-burner cooktop. Above the range, there is a stainless-steel microwave and a range hood, as well as an overhead cupboard and your RV control and monitor panel.

The Falcon GT galley features a molded Granicote fiberglass countertop with stainless steel sink and a two-burner cooktop.

This bunkhouse model features a very spacious array of cupboards and drawers in the galley, with double sided ball bearing drawer glides – the drawers are hidden behind the tempered glass metal framed cabinet doors.

A large 5 cu. ft. refrigerator is standard, and the radio above the refrigerator has an input for your iPod.

In the Bedroom

The Falcon GT 24 BH is a compact trailer, but it delivers a very comfortable camping experience. A queen size bed at the front of the trailer features an iRelax foam mattress, and when you swivel the LCD TV around from its position in full view of the dinette, you can relax in the bedroom and watch your favourite TV shows or videos.

A queen size bed at the front of the Falcon GT features an iRelax foam mattress

The Falcon GT 24BH is a compact trailer designed for touring – you would not expect to find a great deal of hanging closet space in a trailer of this size – but the designers at Travel Lite have provided a wardrobe adjacent to the master bedroom – it isn’t large, but it would accommodate your sundresses and outfits that are not suitable for stowing in the folded clothes storage compartments under the beds.

In the Bathroom

The Travel Lite Falcon GT 24BH has a dry bath shower room with a flush toilet. The bathroom is isolated from the main living area of the trailer by an aluminum framed frosted glass door, and there is a shower curtain for additional privacy.

The bathroom has a skylight above the shower, and a very nice vanity mirror with integrated lighting – it is a bright and easily maintained area.

The Bottom Line

The Travel Lite Falcon GT 24BH is a very attractive travel trailer, with a refreshingly moderninterior design, excellent quality components, and a two-year warranty backed by RV dealers throughout Canada and the United States.

If you are looking for a compact, lightweight, aerodynamic trailer that will turn heads everywhere you go, this would be an excellent unit to add to your list.

2016 Travel Lite 625 Super Lite Review

' src=

TCM reviews the half-ton targeted Travel Lite 625, a short or long bed hard side, non-slide, non-bath truck camper.  Can a camper small enough to fit inside a short bed tailgate actually be worth owning?

Travel Lite 625 Review Truck Camper

According to Dustin Johns, President of Travel Lite, the reasons for building the Travel Lite 625 called him on the phone constantly.  When the Travel Lite 625 debuted in Truck Camper Magazine in June of 2015, Dustin explained, “Our customers and dealers have wanted a half-ton short bed camper that would allow the tailgate to be kept up, offer plenty of interior room, and feature basic amenities including a stove, sink, and refrigerator.  I was asked to build this camper many, many times.”

Travel-Lite-625-front-drivers-angle

Above: The Travel Lite 625 at D&H RV Center in Apex, North Carolina

From the repeated requests, the Travel Lite team designed a hard side truck camper that would fit inside of a 6.5-foot short bed truck with the tailgate closed.  Keeping the camper inside the tailgate would allow for towing without an extension hitch and provide the best possible turning radius for the rig.  Once lowered, the tailgate could then become a small deck for sitting or gear.

Perhaps the Travel Lite 625’s most impressive trick is its ability to work with short and long bed half-ton trucks.  It looks a bit odd mounted on a long bed, but the two feet of bonus truck bed storage is perfect for toys, gear, and water containers.

To keep the weight down, Travel Lite used the materials, construction approach, and design concepts of their best-selling 770 Super Lite model.  The 625 features the same overall profile, kiln-dried Banak wood from South America, and cabinetry netting as the 770.  Further eliminating weight, the 625 was designed without a bathroom, black tank, or grey tank.

Travel Lite 625 passenger side

Dustin reported the initial dry weight of the 625 at 1,285 pounds and gave the camper a $10,495 MSRP with standard build options; refrigerator, sink, stove, fresh water tank, converter, and manual Rieco-Titan jacks.  Clearly Dustin was looking to put a sizable dent in the half-ton truck camper marketplace.

Of course the path to half-ton truck camper paradise is paved with good intention truck camper designs that never caught on.  These campers were usually too heavy, too expensive, or too small to become a consistent seller in the marketplace.

The question is, will the Travel Lite 625 break through where so many others have failed, or end up in the half-ton truck camper bin of history?  It’s time to put the 625 under the microscope.

We photographed the 2016 Travel Lite 625 seen in this review at D&H RV Center in Apex, North Carolina.

Floor Plan Evaluation

Travel-Lite-625-Floor-Plan

As seems to be the trend of late, the Travel Lite 625 is infused with the ideas and lessons of the past five decades of truck camper design.  This is not a fancy SolidWorks modeled multi-slide with intricate cuts and exotic amenities.  You’ll find no CNC-routed curves or luxury appliances here.

What you will find is an firmly old-school, pencil-to-paper, saw-to-wood truck camper design that shoe-horns an impressive amount comfort and utility into a short bed half-ton compatible truck camper.  Shut the tailgate and that’s exactly what Travel Lite’s dealers and customers asked for.  As the saying goes, give them what they want.

Travel-Lite-625-dinette-wide

Above: The large 4-foot sliding dinette window brings in a ton of light

Stepping into the 625, the careful design decisions are everywhere.  The main living space feels open and spacious with plenty of light from a dual-window entry door, two large windows in the dinette, and a cabover side window.  Kitchen and dinette cabinetry and storage are readily available and the overall level of materials feels solid and durable.

Travel Lite 625 kitchen and overcab

While we didn’t take precise measurements, it appears that half of the available kitchen counter top is taken up by the single-basin sink and two-burner cooktop.

Travel Lite 625 kitchen

The flip-up counter helps by adding about 25-percent more counter space, but it’s still a tight set-up for preparing anything other than the basics.

Travel Lite 625 kitchen storage above stove

To put this into perspective, Angela and I are connoisseurs of culinary basics on the road.  Our coffee, tea, one-pot-meals, and endless PB&J sandwich preparations would all work fine between this kitchen set-up and dinette table.  Now our laptop-to-laptop work requirements would be seriously challenged, but that’s another topic.

Travel Lite 625 Camper Dinette

The U-shape dinette in the 625 was designed to accommodate three to four adults (if they’re very good friends) around the table for meals, conversation, and cards.  In reality, the dinette seating, table, and available leg area is best for two adults.  With just two, there’s plenty of floor space for legs and feet underneath, and ample table room for two plates of food, and drinks.

If this were our camper, we would want a larger table, and a more stable table leg and/or wall attachment system.  There’s nothing worse at a restaurant than a table that moves when you put your dinner plate or elbow on it.  With a single post, this table is fairly stable, but requires care not to bump it.  Naturally, one table leg is less weight than two, and a smaller table weighs less than a bigger one.  Compromises, compromises.

Above: The table and table leg are easy to remove for more room, or to make the dinette into a bed

Travel Lite 625 porta-potti

Above: The porta-potti has a convenient storage compartment under the dinette

The dinette quickly makes into a 6-foot bed with the provided cushions.  This makes the 625 an ideal choice for the hunter or fisherman who wants to bring a friend for a weekend trip to that remote hunting ground or fish camp.

Travel Lite 625 dinette as bed

Above: The dinette makes into a 6-foot long bed

Travel-Lite-625-rear-window-power-thermostat

On the rear wall, the 625 features a 110-volt outlet and the thermostat.  While I don’t foresee this unit connected to shore power often, this outlet will be vital for charging computers, phones, and cameras while hooked up to AC or a portable generator.

Travel Lite 625 two-cubic foot refrigerator

Above: Standard on the 625 is a two-cubic foot refrigerator, which can be upgraded to the three-cubic foot size shown

The three-cubic foot, three-way refrigerator is ample for a camper this size.  In the past, campers targeting the short bed half-ton size and weight came primarily with ice boxes if they had cold-food provisions at all.  Having an actual three-cubic foot, three-way refrigerator is quite a luxury in this weight category and price.

Travel Lite 625 battery box

Just below the refrigerator is a cabinet dedicated to a sealed enclosure for the 625’s single battery.  When I opened this cabinet, I was hoping to see storage, and found myself disappointed that this space was almost completely used.

I would look into moving this battery elsewhere.  My favorite go-to battery moving product is the Torklift International Hidden Power that places a battery inside a protected and sealed box under your truck.  With this modification, you could recapture this valuable storage space without losing the house battery.

Another option is changing to sealed AGM battery in this location.  You won’t gain your storage back, but you’ll likely gain more amp hours.  Then again, a bigger battery adds cost and weight.  When designing a camper for a half-ton short bed, trade-offs abound.

Travel Lite 625 kitchen cabinets

To the right of the refrigerator and battery cabinet is a large two-section cabinet and pull-out drawer.  With its immediate proximity to the kitchen and dinette, the drawer will likely be used for silverware, cooking utensils, and other kitchen items.

Travel Lite 625 storage, refrigerator, and stereo

The large two-section cabinet is open season.  Some will use it for dry food, pots, and pans, while others will store clothing and camping gear.  We would at least attempt to use the cabinet over the sink for all dry food, cups, and plates, and use this space for a limited number of pots and pans, and then clothing and camping gear.  In truck camping, less is more.  In truck camping in a small camper, even less is even more.

Below the pull-out drawer is where you’ll find the stereo system, power converter, and fuse panel.  Having the stereo system and fuse panel easy to reach mid-ship makes sense.

Travel Lite 625 bed

The opening into the cabover is wide open and inviting with white-color LED lights perfectly placed for general lighting and reading.

Travel-Lite-625-cabover-TV-connections

Above: The cabover ceiling has a 110-volt outlet and provisions to add a 12-volt television

On the other hand, there’s not a single cabinet for clothing in the cabover.  Not one.  There is however a main LED area light, two smaller reading lights, a 110-volt outlet, and provisions to add a 12-volt television.  No cabover muss.  No cabover fuss.  That’s it.

Above: The overcab bed on the passenger’s side (left photo) the driver’s side (right photo)

In practice, I expect most folks will bring duffel bags for their clothing and keep the bags in the cabover when they’re not sleeping.  Duffel bags (or whatever cloth based luggage you prefer) are light weight and highly portable, especially compared to standard wood cabinetry.  Unless you just have to have your clothing folded up and put away, duffel bags make a lot of sense in a small camper like the 625.

Specifications

At 1,285 pounds dry, the Travel Lite 625 is not the lightest weight hard side truck camper on the market, but it’s in the ballpark.

Travel Lite offers a range of options for the 625 including a solar panel system, electric remote-controlled Rieco-Titan jacks, roof rack, ladder, and an awning.

Travel-Lite-625-manual-jacks-shower-power-110-CATV

Above: Rieco-Titan manual jacks, cable television connection, shower power connection, and 110-volt outlet

Unfortunately, you could quickly defeat the concept of the light weight 625 if you add a lot of options.  Just the above mentioned list could add 150 pounds, or more.  In a camper where the design team opted for cabinet netting instead of cabinet doors, that doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Travel-Lite-625-rear-wide

Above: The Travel Lite 625 is 78-inches wide and 7-feet, 4-inches tall on the exterior

The 78-inch width of the Travel Lite 625 is 14-inches narrower than Travel Lite’s mid-size truck campers and 17-inches narrower than their largest models.  Obviously, every additional inch in length, width, and height on a truck camper adds weight.  For a camper targeting short-bed half-ton trucks, the 78-inch width strikes a good balance between interior space, and weight.

Travel-Lite-625-interior-cabintry-and-floor

Above: The ceiling in the 625 is full height at 6.5 feet

One aspect of the 625 design that’s full-size is the interior height.  At 6.5 feet, standing in the Travel Lite is like standing in a much larger truck camper.  There’s plenty of headroom, even for tall folks like me.  That headroom helps give the 625 its roomy feel.

Travel-Lite-625-long-bed-truck

Above: The Travel Lite 625 on a long bed truck, photo courtesy of Travel Lite Campers

Perhaps the most controversial aspect of the 625 is its long bed compatibility.  Mounted on a long bed truck, the 625 looks fairly ridiculous as it locates the unit two-feet inside of the truck bed.  To say this is an unusual rig aesthetic would be an understatement.  For many – us included – the immediate reaction was, “What the heck is Travel Lite thinking?”

Travel Lite 625 long bed truck

Well, Travel Lite was thinking that the 625 is compatible with the widest possible number of truck bed lengths and payload capacities.  In short (no pun intended) the 625 is compatible with many half-ton trucks, all three-quarter and one-ton trucks, and works equally well with short bed or long beds.  Does it look funny on a long bed?  Absolutely!  But very few hard side truck campers have this kind of truck compatibility.

Travel Lite 625 short bed tailgate closed

Above: The 625 on a short bed truck with the tail gate closed, photo courtesy of Travel Lite Campers

And we must recognize the point that mounting the 625 on a long bed allows for the remaining two-feet of bed space to be available for whatever the owner wants it for; bikes, water, gear, you name it.

With nine gallons of fresh water, no grey tank, no black tank, and no inside bathroom, there’s not much to talk on the subject of the 625’s holding tanks.  Since you’ll likely only be using the fresh tank to wash hands, wash dishes, and brush teeth, the nine gallons could last upwards of a week, or more.

Travel Lite 625 outside shower

If you plan to scare the bears and use the outside shower, the nine gallons may only last you a couple days.

Travel Lite 625 city water connection

Speaking of bears, I can hardly believe Travel Lite included a city water connection for the 650, but they did.  Without an inside shower, I can barely find a reason for this.  Maybe so those who enjoy flashing the wildlife take extended outside showers?  Hide your eyes Mother Nature.  Nothing to see here.

Travel Lite 625 20-pound propane compartment

The single vertical 20-pound propane tank is absolutely perfect for the 625.  Not only are vertical tanks exchangeable at nearly every Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, and gas station from coast-to-coast, but a 20-pound capacity should last a long time in a camper this size, unless you’re camping in the seriously cold.

When camping with a single tank you always need to keep tabs on your usage.  When that tank runs out, there’s no second tank to change to.  If we had one tank, I would fill it long before empty, just like putting fuel in the truck.

Travel Lite lists the battery as optional on the 625.  You could connect the 625 to your truck’s battery and gain the space we talked about earlier, but that would not be our recommendation.  All it takes is one night of running the furnace in cold weather and you could be stranded with a dead truck battery.  Whether you get the built-in battery Travel Lite provides, or another battery storage solution, we definitely recommend a house camper battery.

Wet Weight Calculation

Using the standardized Truck Camper Magazine wet weight calculation, let’s run the numbers on the Travel Lite 625.

Travel Lite 625 base weight sticker

Base Dry Weight, plus single battery option

Travel Lite 625: dry weight, 1,285 pounds + 9 gallons fresh, 75.1 pounds + one battery, 65 pounds + 20-pound full propane tank, 20 pounds + stuff, 500 pounds = 1,945.1 pounds

Since we don’t foresee or recommend many options being added to the 625, we’re not going to run an optioned wet weight calculation.  As it is, the final wet weight of 1,945.1 pounds may shock some folks.

500 pounds of that weight is the standardized “stuff weight” that we add to each and every wet weight calculation in Truck Camper Magazine.  In a small camper with limited storage like the 625, 500 pounds of stuff weight is likely more than required.  If we subtract half of this stuff weight, we get a more realistic 1,695.1 pounds.

Truck Recommendations

To remain conservative, we are going to match the 625 with a 1,695.1 pound wet weight (250 pounds of stuff).  This may still be high, but we always play it safe when it comes to truck and camper matching.

For those who haven’t looked at too many payload stickers, it may come as a surprise to learn that many half-ton trucks don’t have 1,695.1 pounds of payload.  Many older half-ton trucks, or trucks with fancy packages and long option lists, have considerably less.  Do not assume that any half-ton truck has this kind of payload.  It might, but it might not.

That said, it would be a cinch to either locate or order a half-ton truck with 1,695.1 pounds of payload, or better.  If you approached your preferred local dealer and said, “I need no less than 1,700 pounds of payload in a half-ton truck” they should be able to work out the specifications you require, and locate or order the right truck without trouble.

You could also take those same specifications and find a used half-ton with enough payload.  New or used, always check the actual payload sticker (the yellow sticker inside the driver’s side door) on the actual truck before making a purchase.

If you are purchasing a new or new-to-you truck, it’s also worth considering buying even more truck.  Two years from now you may want a bigger camper.  Why not buy the right truck for that bigger camper now?  In trucks, you often don’t pay that much more to get a lot more payload.

The Verdict

Some truck campers are designed to wow the senses.  You walk in and they have a dance floor of interior space, a dinette ready for six, a refrigerator that could swallow a beer keg, and storage that could empty your attic.  You know you’re in one of these campers when the HDTV is almost as big as the one you have at home, and there’s a fireplace underneath it (almost kidding).

Travel-Lite-625-front-passenger-angle-wide

Where these campers “wow the senses”, the Travel Lite 625 “wows with common sense”.  From the very concept of the unit, to the way the camper was designed and built, everything about the 625 is a carefully considered compromise to create a hard-side unit that’s truly half-ton compatible.

Judged from this perspective, the 2016 Travel Lite 625 is a roaring success.  Yes, it’s chock full of compromises compared to the “wow the senses” models, but these compromises were the right ones to make the half-ton targeted size and weight.  The form, function, and comfort this camper offers half-ton truck owners – especially for the price – is very impressive.

In short, Travel Lite has built a truly half-ton compatible truck camper that’s worth owning.  Yes, you will still have to run the numbers to make sure the 625 will match your half-ton truck, but the chances are very high that it will.

If you’re in the half-ton truck camper market, and can live with the 625 list of compromises (tight kitchen, no bathroom, no grey tank, no cabover storage, etc.), this camper deserves to be on your list.  With the 625, Travel Lite has a serious half-ton ready contender.

Pros Low weight and forward COG maximizes half-ton potential Short and long bed truck ready Tailgate closes on a 6.5-foot short bed truck Excellent sense of interior space for a small camper Good amount of kitchen and dinette area storage Dinette makes into a 6-foot bed

Cons Very tight kitchen area Very limited 9-gallon fresh tank, no grey, no black No bathroom, but features a porta-potti cabinet Extremely tight kitchen counter space, but extension helps Optional single battery takes up valuable interior storage No storage in the cabover – pack your duffels

Truck Camper Magazine inspects all reviewed truck campers for design, material, and quality issues and reports what we find.  However, since Truck Camper Magazine reviews only brand new truck campers, our reviews do not address long-term quality, customer service, or reliability.

To learn about a brand’s long-term quality, customer service, and reliability, Truck Camper Magazine recommends talking directly with truck camper owners at truck camper rallies and online via truck camper forums and truck camper owners groups.

Please be sure to balance your gathered feedback across multiple sources including direct correspondence with the truck camper manufacturers and your closest truck camper dealers. Click here if you are new to truck campers.

Specifications Definitions

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.
