Billy Joel Is Coming to Australia This Summer Just for One Huge Concert at the MCG

If you grew up in the 90s, odds are that you tried to memorise every single word to Billy Joel's 'We Didn't Start the Fire'. Every 90s kid did. That's a skill that probably hasn't been called upon much since — other than while watching one specific episode of Parks and Recreation , and all of The Boys — but it's about to get its time to shine. Yes, the Piano Man himself is coming Down Under to sing us a song or several.

Making his first trip to Melbourne in the longest time — well, in 14 years — Joel will only play one Aussie gig. He's hitting up the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday, December 10, in an Australian exclusive thanks to the Victorian Government's Always Live program. That's the blockbuster live music program that's designed to attract international acts to the state, and kicked off earlier in 2022 with the Foo Fighters playing in Geelong .

When Joel takes over the MCG, the sounds of AFL club tunes will be replaced with everything from 'Uptown Girl' and 'It's Still Rock and Roll to Me' to 'You May Be Right' and 'Only the Good Die Young' — plus 'Tell Her About It', 'Big Shot', 'River of Dreams' and, yes, 'The Longest Time' and 'We Didn't Start the Fire'.

Joel hasn't been our way for a while, but the six-time Grammy-winner has been playing one show a month at New York City's Madison Square Garden since January 2014 — and became the venue's first-ever music franchise in the process. Before he makes the trip to Melbourne, he'll notch up his 84th monthly and 130th show at The Garden.

Obviously, that's just one of his achievements. Joel has sold over 150 million records, making him the sixth best-selling recording artist of all time and the third best-selling solo artist.

If you're now keen to see the Piano Man in what's promising to be one huge gig, tickets go on sale at 10am AEST on Monday, July 4, with pre-sales from 11am AEST on Thursday, June 30.

Billy Joel Transforms the MCG Into The Melbourne Concert Ground #REVIEW

by Paul Cashmere on December 11, 2022

in News , Noise Pro

There were no crickets at the MCG this week. Just thunderous applause. Billy Joel opened his one-off Melbourne show with a message for his fans. “The bad news is I haven’t put out anything new since 1993, so basically you’re gonna hear the same shit you heard last time. The good news is I haven’t put out anything new since 1993, so basically you’re gonna hear the same shit you heard last time.”

It’s true. Billy’s last album of contemporary new songs was ‘River of Dreams’ in 1993 although his last studio album was the classical music album ‘Fantasies & Delusions’ (2001) but Billy wasn’t under any fantasies or delusions that this audience was here for that.

Billy Joel at the MCG 10 December 2022 photo by Bron Robinson 2

This was a show a long time in the making. Michael Gudinski started planning this event five years ago and it was set to be announced on the day the pandemic became real and we were shut down. Sadly Michael didn’t live to see his dream fulfilled, something his son Matt (now Chief executive of the Mushroom Group) acknowledged before the show.

The Joel event was produced in partnership with the Victoria Government and Frontier Touring through Victoria’s live events initiative Always Live. With 45% of the audience from interstate (that’s around 30,000 people), this sole event was a massive boost to the Victorian economy. With Always Live, the Victorian Labor Government is showing that music can be every much an economic boost as sport.

This was Billy’s only Australian show evening up the score from when his last Australian show was for Sydney only in 2013. 76,000 plus fans were treated to Joel Gold from start to finish opening with ‘A Matter of Trust’ from 1986’s ‘The Bridge’ and ending with ‘You May Be Right’ from 1980’s ‘Glass Houses’. There were a few curve balls. An Aussie tribute with Banjo Paterson’s 1895 masterpiece ‘Waltzing Matilda’ set the Australian mood. The Stones ‘Start Me Up’ modified ‘An Innocent Man’, ‘River Deep Mountain High’ made its way into ‘The River of Dreams’. There was Puccini’s ‘Nessa dorme’ sung by Joel band guitarist Mike DelGuidice and the show ended with Led Zeppelin’s ‘Rock and Roll’ merged into ‘You May Be Right’.

Since 2014 Billy Joel has had a lifetime contract with Madison Square Garden in New York for one show a month. This show treated Melbourne to its own night of Billy Broadway.

Melbourne is in the mood for a melody with 71,000 tickets snapped up for superstar Billy Joel 's exclusive One Night Only In Australia concert at Melbourne's iconic MCG.

Presented by Frontier Touring, the Victorian Government and ALWAYS LIVE, the December 10 concert will set Melbourne buzzing with a phenomenal 52% of ticket buyers from outside of metropolitan Melbourne and 42% from outside of Victoria. The concert is expected to bring millions of dollars in revenue to the state of Victoria with hospitality and accommodation primary beneficiaries.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos said:

"Another sold out major event is great news for Victoria - it will support businesses and jobs in our creative, tourism and hospitality industries. "More than half of ticket buyers will come from outside of Melbourne for this one-night only experience, reinforcing the importance of the state's major events calendar as a drawcard for visitors."

ALWAYS LIVE Chair and Mushroom Group CEO Matt Gudinski said:

" Billy Joel is undeniably a superstar and one of the greatest artists of our generation but the speed his MCG concert sold out highlights just how true that is.

"This is a fantastic result for Frontier, ALWAYS LIVE and the state of Victoria. We are incredibly proud to deliver this amazing one night only event and can't wait to see Melbourne full of life this December."

An artist who requires little introduction, Billy Joel is one of the biggest concert draws in the world. Having sold over 150 million records and scoring six GRAMMY® wins from 23 nominations, Joel ranks as one of the most popular and respected entertainers in history - the sixth best-selling recording artist of all time, and the third best-selling solo artist.

Performing one Australian show only in Melbourne's most iconic stadium, the concert is presented in partnership with ALWAYS LIVE, a state-wide celebration of contemporary live music supported by the Victorian Government through Visit Victoria.

About Billy Joel:

Billy Joel 's anthology has soundtracked the lives of millions, his impeccable musicianship and transcendent songs recognised worldwide. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1999, Joel received The Kennedy Center Honors (one of the USA's top cultural awards) in 2013.

In 2014, he received both The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song and the once-in-a-century ASCAP Centennial Award - the latter presented to American music icons in recognition of their incomparable accomplishments in their respective music genres and beyond.

In 2016, the Library of Congress selected 'Piano Man' for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its "cultural, historic, and artistic significance." He's the recipient of numerous other awards, including a Tony (for Movin' Out, a Broadway musical based on his music), MusiCares Person Of The Year, and an inductee in the Songwriter's Hall of Fame.

'Piano Man', 'You May Be Right', 'Always a Woman', 'We Didn't Start the Fire', 'Uptown Girl', 'Big Shot', 'It's Still Rock and Roll to Me', 'Only the Good Die Young', 'New York State of Mind'... the hunger to see this highly influential songwriter remains undiminished.

Frontier Touring, the Victorian Government and Always Live are thrilled to announce that Billy Joel will perform one night only in Australia on Saturday, December 10th, with a history-making performance at the iconic stadium Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

An artist who requires little introduction, Billy Joel is one of the biggest concert draws in the world. Having sold over 150 million records and scoring six GRAMMY wins from 23 nominations, Joel ranks as one of the most popular and respected entertainers in history – the sixth best-selling recording artist of all time, and the third best-selling solo artist. Tickets to this exclusive concert – Joel’s first live performance in Melbourne in 14 years – will go on sale Monday, July 4th at 10 am AEST via Frontier Touring . Frontier Members can access the Frontier pre-sale, which starts Thursday, June 30th at 11 am AEST.

Telstra Members can also get exclusive access to the Telstra Plus Member pre-sale, which starts on Monday, June 27th at 10 am AEST.

“I’m happy to announce that I’m finally coming to Australia to do one exclusive show at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as part of Always Live,” Joel shares in a video message that can be viewed below. “It’s been a really long time since I’ve been there, I’m really looking forward to coming and I’m bringing the whole family and we’re going to enjoy it. I’ll see you there.”

As the first-ever music franchise at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Joel began his record-breaking residency at the storied arena back in January 2014, performing one show every month “as long as the demand continues”. Incredibly, November 2022 will see Joel performing his 85th monthly and 130th show at The Garden , before he heads down to Melbourne for the one-off AU show.

Music legend Billy Joel i s coming to Australia to perform a special one-off concert.

The Piano Man superstar will belt out his greatest hits at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 10 this year.

Billy Joel is the third-bestselling solo artist of all time, having sold more than 150 million records across his career.

The 73-year-old’s one-night-only show on the hallowed turf of the MCG is part of Always Live, a collaboration between the Victorian Government and Frontier Touring.

Joel has promised fans will get to hear his biggest songs when he takes the stage, which could include Uptown Girl, Piano Man, Just the Way You Are, Movin’ Out, Allentown, She’s Always A Woman and The River Of Dreams.

“You’ve got to do songs that people know. You can’t just do all your obscure album tracks because a lot of people may not know them,” he said.

Recent tour reviews

The show started almost 1/2 hour late, but Billy Joel did not disappoint. The concert went over 2 hours playing to a packed house. Between 20-25 original BJ tunes were performed with a few others we all know and love to sing along with. His daughter Alexa Rae joined him on stage for “Baby Grand” which was nice to see. Each song highlighted the various band members and they were introduced accordingly; all are great musicians and vocalists. We all sang along to Piano Man, his last song of the night. After chanting for an encore, the band came back and played an additional 3 songs capping it off with Billy Joel placing a turkey hat upon his head while belting out “You may be right, I may be crazy...” interjecting a small part of Led Zepplin’s Rock n Roll into the song.

Billy ‘s mantra after many of his tunes: And then we got divorced. Lol.

My Dear Mr. Joel,

Thank you for the wonderful performance! Your music means so much to me and has been for decades. I feel blessed and thankful for being able to see you. This concert was one for my life and the first time. It’s been one of my life goals to attend your concerts in Madison Square Garden but this is the first opportunity to see you. And I wasn’t about to miss you.

The atmosphere was electric from the start. The man himself was just amazing. So much energy and humour coupled with a keen insight can't begin to describe the performance from this 70 year old gentleman.

His voice has aged and mellowed to a way that really enhances his songs.

He played a good variety of music spanning all of his long career. From his 80s classics to some of the lesser played, but brilliant deeper music from the late 70s.

When he played the his signature song, Piano Man, you could hear it all the way to Scotland. It was out of this world.

The band were simply brilliant. They are so talented that when one of his group stood up and sang 'Nessun Dorma', you could of heard a pin drop in Wembley Stadium. The resulting applause was like thunder that just rolled on and on.

A really fantastic night out that I will remember for the rest of my life.

After announcing the upcoming end of his Madison Square Garden residency this year, the demand for Billy Joel concert tickets is growing in 2024. Thankfully, there are still a few avenues for how to get Billy Joel tickets for his 2024 concert tour and remaining MSG shows.

The "Piano Man" singer has held an MSG residency since 2014, setting a record for the most shows at the New York City arena for solo artists. But, after a decade of monthly shows at Madison Square Garden, the curtains are closing on his residency in July 2024. While his MSG residency is ending, the singer's long-running "Billy Joel in Concert" tour will still continue throughout the year in various cities across the United States.

Billy Joel has 12 more shows scheduled throughout 2024, including a few more performances at Madison Square Garden. The year's confirmed remaining dates will take place across ten cities before ending in Las Vegas, Nevada in November. As such, there are various opportunities to see Billy Joel sing his hits like "Vienna," "Movin' Out," and "Uptown Girl" in 2024.

cbs madison square garden billy joel 1000th special

Billy Joel fans will get to find out whether Davy is still in the Navy after all. A broadcast special of the singer in performance at Madison Square Garden was cut off abruptly in most time zones Sunday night during his climactic rendition of the signature hit “Piano Man,” and after considerable public outrage, CBS has committed to re-airing the entire program on Friday night.

Popular on Variety

The show started a half-hour behind schedule in the eastern and central time zones because it followed a broadcast of the Masters Tournament that went past its expected end time. CBS has not explained exactly what transpired to have the Joel special get so close to its finish time before the abrupt cutaway. But with some local affiliates upset that the lateness of the Joel special was cutting into their local news time, it would seem that someone made the fateful decision that no one would miss it if they never got to the part of “Piano Man” about how “the microphone smells like a beer, and they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar.”

Wrong, on that score, as even some local newscasters found themselves in the position of apologizing to Joel fans upset to see their faces instead of the singer’s, which was definitely not an instance where they “got us feelin’ alright.”

And west coast viewers, meanwhile, will get a chance to see Joel stick the landing twice.
