Xi'an Tours FAQs - Plan Your Xi'an Tours Worry-Free

icon

The amount of time you should spend in Xian depends on your travel plans and interests. A typical itinerary includes 2 to 3 days to visit the major attractions in Xian , but it is possible to spend more time if you want to explore the city and its surrounding areas in more depth.

Xian has many must-see attractions, including the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum , the Ancient City Wall , the Shaanxi History Museum , the Big Wild Goose Pagoda , and the Muslim Quarter .

Those terracotta warriors and horses  were made about 2,200 years ago. They are life-size terracotta warriors to defend the army of Qin Shihuang (which was the first emperor in Chinese history). Those warriors and horses were discovered in March 1974.

Xian  is a historical destination that can be visited throughout the year . However, the best seasons to visit are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) . During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant, with comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds. Additionally, the springtime brings beautiful cherry blossoms to the city, while autumn offers stunning fall foliage. If you're interested in experiencing Xian's winter season, you can visit during this time to view the  snowy landscapes and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the Spring Festival  (also known as Chinese New Year), which typically falls in late January or early February.

Xian is well connected to other parts of China by air and train, with regular flights and high-speed trains available from major cities such as Beijing , Shanghai , Chengdu , Guilin , Zhangjiajie , Dunhuang, Pingyao, Luoyang, Zhengzhou, Chongqing, and more. If you have specific travel ideas or transportation preferences, our travel experts are happy to help you arrange the best transportation option for your needs.

Xian offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget hostels to luxury hotels. Popular areas to stay in Xian include the city center, near the Bell Tower, and near the South Gate of the Ancient City Wall . Before booking your Xian tour, let us know your preferred hotel class (3 star, 4 star, or 5 star) and we can provide a list of hotels for your reference.

Xian is famous for its delicious cuisine, including dishes like  biang biang noodles , rou jia mo (Chinese-style hamburgers), and yangrou paomo (lamb soup with bread). The city is also renowned for its street food, especially in the Muslim Quarter. If you're interested in trying dumplings, we offer a family visit experience where you can learn to make dumplings or a Dumpling Dinner (Jiaozi Banquet) where you can enjoy a variety of dumplings.

There are many day trips from  Xian , including a visit to the nearby Huashan Mountain (Mount Hua) , a hike along the  Hukou Waterfall , or a trip to the nearby city of  Luoyang  to see the Longmen Grottoes and Shaolin Kungfu at Shaolin Temple.

Latest Xi'an Tours Reviews from Our Customers

Wayne C

I'm a Singaporean traveller who booked a private solo tour. I chanced upon AOT after I googled and decided to travel last min. My planner from AOT named Rita was very patient towards all my request and changes, she is knowledgeable and provided excellent advice for my 8 days trip arrangement from Shanghai, Zhangjiajie N Chongqing. Although there were very minor hiccups just like any overseas holiday, it was still a well planned trip.

I would like thank all my tour guides and drivers (师父) for looking after me so well. Special mention to Zhangjiajie Tour Guide named Ms Rita Wang, she looks after her client with her sincerest heart into the smallest details such as eating habits and my lifestyle. (Example: Turning A/C on knowing we Singaporeans can't live without A/C in car & also I don't even have to look at menu to order food becos she knows what I want to eat) Also thank you 杨师父 who tagged team with Rita, he is a very good skilled safe driver and knows how look after me during long haul journey drive inter cities.

I would strongly reccomended anyone who wants to travel to look for Rita or her colleagues from Asia Odyssey Travel.

Lastly, thank you to all whom I've crossed path during my trip. I'm grateful to all people in China for the warm hospitality. 感恩大家的招待和爱。

I left my heart in Zhangjiajie

Our bespoke East to West China tour starting In Shanghai and ending in Shangri-La was well organised by Mr Leo Li.

Everything went smoothly for our 20 day tour the guides and drivers where knowledgeable and looked after us well, particularly Sarah in Kunming.

We saw some beautiful parts of China and our hotels were good plus traveling 1st class on the bullets trains was well worth the extra cost.

We would recommend the Asia Odessey travel company and will definitely use them again for a future China tour.

It was regarded as “the pearl of ancient dynasties and house of Chinese treasures”   where reflect over one thousand years of Chinese history, the splendid culture and people life in ancient times.

The museum, built in traditional Tang architectural style, houses over 370,000 cultural relics, including murals, paintings, pottery, coins, as well as bronze, gold, silver, seal and stone objects, all of which can be dated back to over 1 million years ago to the late Qin dynasty. Next to Big Wild Goose Pagoda . Giant Wild Goose Pagoda or Big Wild Goose Pagoda, is a Buddhist pagoda located in southern Xi'an, Shaanxi province, China and became the symbol of the old-line Xi'an. It was built in 652 during the Tang dynasty and originally had five stories. The structure was rebuilt in 704 during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian, and its exterior brick facade was renovated during the Ming dynasty. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda attracts numerous visitors for its fame in the Buddhist religion and its simple but appealing style of construction. It is rated as a National Key Cultural Relic Preserve. One of the pagoda's many functions was to hold sutras and figurines of the Buddha that were brought to China from India by the Buddhist translator and traveler Xuanzang.

The last stop for today is  Muslim Quarter  to meet many local snacks, which is the most famous food street in Xian. It consists of Islamic food area, ethnic group shopping center, Great mosque and living area of Hui people. It is a place distinct for its delicious food and Islamic culture, with a history of more than 1000 years. The streets are paved by gray flagstone and the buildings are of Ming style. About 2000 years ago in the Han Dynasty after the opening of Silk Road, Changan welcomed the first Muslims: Muslim businessmen, envoys, and students. The food in the street is of north and west flavor, in which crude pancake in mutton soup, cold rice noodles, Chinese hamburger, Qishan noodles are famous Shaanxi food.Besides, there are other local flavors: Xi’an small cakes, Shaanxi pasta, Rice cake, etc. And in the street, most are beef and mutton products, in which the roast beef is especially delicious.

The Terracotta Army is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210–209 BCE and whose purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife. Originally the ancient funerary project for Emperor Qin Shi Huang, it is now a live museum, officially named Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum, showing the life stories of the emperor and the once powerful Qin Empire (221 – 207BC) in those days of pomp and vigor.

Day 3 Xian to Mt. Huashan Day Tour Itinerary

  • Place&Transport: Xian to Mt Huashan
  • Today's Activities: Mt Huashan

In the early morning, our tour guide will meet you at your hotel lobby and drive you to Mt Hua, it takes around 2 hours for one way.

Mt. Huashan  is mainly composed of 5 peaks –   Cloud Terrace Peak   (North Peak, 1613m),   Jade Maiden Peak   (Middle Peak, 2042m),   Sunrise Peak   (East Peak, 2100m),   Lotus Peak   (West Peak, 2038m) and   Landing Wild Goose Peak   (South Peak, 2160m). Cloud Terrace Peak, the lowest of the five, is the starting point.   There are t wo walking trails leading to the   Cloud Terrace Peak.

Mt_Huashan.jpg

The most popular is the traditional route in Huashan Yu (Huashan Gorge) starting from Yuquanyuan Temple (west gate); the second trail is the Huangpu Yu (Huangpu Gorge) starting from Huashan East Gate. A cable car is set over the Huangpu Yu (Huangpu Gorge) trail. It takes about 6 minutes up to the Cloud Terrace Peak. walk up for 15 minutes before we reach the platform of the   Cloud Terrace Peak   with the Lotus Peak and Sunrise Peak as the backdrop.

Mt_Huashan1.jpg

Upon arrival on the   Cloud Terrace Peak , enjoy the beauitful surrounding views. ( If you are a hiking lover, keep hiking to the East Peak or West Peak if you are inclined to go further for more fantastic views ).

Next head to the  Jade Maiden Peak  (Middle Peak), Legend has it that a jade maiden was once seen riding a white horse among the mountains, hence the name. The hikers can choose to take a left to   Sunrise Peak  (East Peak), a fine place to enjoy the view of the sunrise in early morning (which would involve climbing the mountain in the dark as there is nowhere to stay on the mountain).

Mt_Huashan2.jpg

Have a rest on the Sunrise peak, and then visit the  Lotus Peak . Huashan means Flower Mountain, and it got the name from Lotus Peak, which resembles a beautifully blooming lotus flower.

Finally there is a gondola which takes visitors across a steep valley to Landing  Wild Goose Peak , the highest among the five summits. The path to the summit is characterized by steep rock faces, with obstacles including a foot-wide plank walkway fixed to a sheer rock face with only a chain along the rock for support. There are steep stone steps. The Wild Goose Peak is particularly dangerous in winter weather. To its summit makes it clear how the impenetrable mountain repelled attackers over the centuries.

After the visit of Mt Hua, you will be transferred back to Xian downtown and your tour ends.

How Long to Spend in Beijing and Xi'an

A classic itinerary for Beijing and Xi'an usually lasts around a week, with 4-5 days allocated for Beijing and 2-3 days for Xi'an.

Beijing boasts a larger array of historical and cultural landmarks to discover, along with more chances to participate in experiential activities. Therefore, we suggest spending more time in Beijing.

How Long to Spend in Beijing

To experience Beijing as authentically as possible and maintain a comfortable travel pace, we recommend spending around 4 to 5 days in the city.

Allocate 2 or 3 days to explore iconic landmarks such as the Forbidden City and the Great Wall.

Dedicate an additional one or two days to discovering the hutongs, traditional residences of Beijing. You may also want to consider arranging some food tours during your explorations.

For those interested in the culture of Beijing, we recommend attending a Peking Opera performance. You could visit their backstage and dress up in their costumes.

Discover real reviews of Highlights Travel Family 's best-rated service across trusted platforms.

How Long to Spend in Xi'an

For a trip to Xi'an, we recommend a duration of 2 to 3 days.

The Terracotta Warriors is undeniably the main attraction in Xi'an, and we recommend spending a day for a visit and trying to make a mini clay warrior yourself!

For the remaining time, you could arrange visits to the Shaanxi History Museum and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, go on a food tour around the Muslim Quarter, and take a leisurely stroll along the Ancient City Wall.

A Classic Beijing and Xi'an Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Beijing and spend the rest of the day exploring at your leisure.
  • Day 2: Tour the Forbidden City, followed by a walk through the hutongs that provides an intimate glimpse into what old Beijing was like.
  • Day 3: Visit the Temple of Heaven, which used to be a royal sacrificial site, and then take a trip to the Great Wall.
  • Day 4: Head to the Summer Palace, which was once a royal garden, and then depart for Xi'an.
  • Day 5: Visit the Terracotta Warriors, along with taking a stroll along the Ancient City Wall.
  • Day 6: Explore the Shaanxi History Museum and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda to get an overview of Chinese history and culture.

This itinerary covers the must-see attractions within a week's span while also allowing time for special experiences and personal exploration. The pace is well-balanced to ensure it's not too rushed.

Our tours are highly personalized, and we are happy to tailor them to fit your interests and requirements. Please feel free to contact us .

How to Travel Between Beijing and Xi'an

Taking a bullet train between Beijing and Xi'an lasting 4½ to 6 hours is a highly recommended option, providing a more flexible and convenient travel experience. There's no need to worry about the long waiting time at the airport, and ticket changes in emergency situations are easier.

Alternatively, there are direct flights available that can transport you between Beijing and Xi'an in 2 to 2½ hours. However, please note that airports are located quite far from the city center, taking around 1½ to 2 hours by car.

Taking into account the additional travel and transportation time, the entire journey by air is roughly comparable to that of a high-speed train, or only slightly faster. It's essential to consider possible traffic delays on the road, which could increase travel times even further.

For a private tour in Beijing and Xi'an, the average cost per day is about US$220–350 per person.

This price typically includes the costs for flights or trains within China, 4-or-5-star accommodations, lunch, entrance fees for attractions, private transportation, and personal tour guides.

During peak times such as May 1-5, October 1-7, and the summer holidays, the prices for hotels and airfares can go up by 50 to 100%.

When you book with us, you'll receive a 100% refund of any payments made to China Highlights if you cancel up to 3 weeks before departure ( more details here⇒ ).

Accommodation Choices in Beijing and Xi'an

For those who prefer a central location for entertainment and shopping in Beijing, Wangfujing is the more popular area to stay. However, for a more unique lodging experience, we recommend opting for a hutong-style hotel.

In Xi'an, the area around the Bell Tower is the more popular choice for those looking for a convenient central location. Alternatively, staying near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda is also a great option. The area is quieter and the prices for accommodation are generally more affordable.

Best Times to Visit Beijing and Xi'an

Autumn is considered the best season to visit Beijing and Xi'an if you're looking for comfortable weather conditions. Summer, particularly during July and August, has a higher chance of experiencing rainfall.

However, since the majority of attractions in Beijing and Xi'an are cultural sites, they are not significantly affected by the weather.

We will create a suitable itinerary of activities based on your preferences or your family's preferences for all seasons.

The first weeks of May and October are peak tourist seasons, closely followed by the summer holidays. If you're planning a trip during these periods, we highly recommend booking at least 6 months to a year in advance to ensure the availability of desired accommodations and attractions.

Upon your arrival at Xi'an Xianyang International Airport, you will see your driver waiting for you by holding a sign with your name and then transfer you to the well-selected hotel for check-in. The rest time is free for you to have a good rest.

Accommodation:  4-Star Hotel

Considering that you arrive in Xi'an at midnight, we arrange for you to start the tour later to ensure you get enough sleep. At 10:00 AM, your guide and driver will pick you up to the world-famous Terracotta Warriors and Horses , which takes about one hour in general. With the reputation of "The Eight Wonder of the World", it is a super large burial mausoleum from the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC) including 3 imposing pits that collect more than 8,000 life-size terracotta figurines with different facial features, and multitudinous well-arrayed chariots and horses.

After the visit, have lunch in a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, we'll drive to visit Banpo Museum , China's first museum built on a prehistoric site. There are over 30,000 cultural relics in this museum, including human bone specimens, paleontological fossil specimens, and production tools used by the primitive Banpo people such as pottery knives, chisels, and axes... A part of the Neolithic village (6,000 years ago) is preserved in the Site Hall of the museum, with relics like houses, cellars, fences, and large ditches, showing the appearance of the original village. Then, have dinner and drive you back to Xi'an.

Terracotta Warriors and Horses in Xian

At 9:00 in the morning, you will be escorted to Shaanxi History Museum , which is China's first large-scale modern national museum, with a collection of more than 1.7 million precious cultural relics that carry the historical information about Xi'an from the Prehistoric Times (115,000 years ago) to 1840 AD. Afterwards, we'll head for Big Wild Goose Pagoda , a masterpiece of Buddhist architecture in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) of China. It was built to house sutras and figures of the Buddha brought to China from India by Buddhist translators and the wandering monk Xuanzang.

You will spend the afternoon soaking in Qujiang Pool Relic Park , once a royal garden, now a public recreation area with natural beauty and abundant history. Wooden cabins, shadow play, tiny waterfalls, reed swamps, etc. will surely feast your eyes. After dinner, you will be transferred to your hotel.

Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xian

Today, we'll continue our 5-day Xi'an Muslim tour by visiting the Ancient City Wall first. It's the largest and best-preserved ancient city wall in China, used as a military defense in old times. In addition to taking a walk on the wall, you can ride a bicycle to catch a bird's-eye view of the local ancient architectural complex. Then, have a deep exploration of Bell & Drum Tower Square  and Muslim Quarter , where you can hunt for a variety of Muslim snacks and authentic local specialties.

After finishing all visits, have lunch in a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, move forward to the Great Mosque , one of the oldest and largest Islamic mosques in China, with a mixed architectural style of Muslim and Chinese traditions. After the Great Mosque visit, we will enjoy a leisure stroll on Luoma Pedestrian Street , with a total length of 600 meters (656 yards). It is one of the trendiest commercial streets in Xi'an, where you can experience the strong local life atmosphere. After a bumper dinner, you will be escorted back to your hotel.

Xian Great Mosque

Today is the last day of your Xi'an Muslim tour. In the morning, we are going to drive to the Small Wild Goose Pagoda , which is a great destination to settle your nerves due to its tranquil and peaceful environment. If you're lucky, you can catch up with such an interesting scene where groups of middle-aged and elderly people are practicing Tai Chi. Later, you'll be transferred to Dapiyuan Mosque , which features the architectural style of the Ming (1368 -1644) and Qing Dynasties (1636 - 1912). Most of the buildings are decorated with delicate carvings and paintings, adding a lot of mystery and cultural charm to the mosque.

Then have lunch in a local restaurant.

Following is a historical visit to Daming Palace National Heritage Park , the most magnificent imperial palace complex in the Tang Dynasty. Grandiose palaces and dreamlike pools make your mind travel between ancient and modern, and you can feel the perfect combination of prosperous Tang culture and modern fashion here. Later, you'll be arranged a farewell dinner and then be escorted to the airport or train stations for your departure.

Reviews about China Discovery

My Review on trip to Beijing, Xian, Shaanxi, Shanghai with China Discovery

I traveled to Beijing, Xian, Shaanxi, Shanghai with China Discovery' s private tour package in April, 2024. Below are my review and tips I want to share with China Discovery's customers. Feel free to contact China Discovery for more details.

Ronnie E

I selected Beijing, Xian, and Shanghai, 8 days tour with China Discovery. Travelling solo in April 2024. I am from the UK. I will not talk much about the tour sites as these were amazing in themselves to see, and lots have already spoken about then, but from a practical viewpoint I will talk about the tour. I will include some photos.

Just to confirm what you get with China Discovery tour, you get your own driver and car, and your own tour guide. It is only you, the tour guide and the driver. No other guests. This means you get very personal/direct one on one tour.

I have to say the tour went very smoothly and like clockwork, I arrived at Beijing airport via Air China flight from London, and the tour guide James was waiting for me at the arrival hall, and then took me to the car to drive to the hotel. My mobile did not work in China, Mark took me to a phone shop to register for a local sim card, I had a headache and James also took me to the chemist to get some medication. The tour guides look after you very well. He showed me a few local places to eat, and then told me what time to meet in the morning and a bit about the local shops etc so I could spend the evening exploring. The next few days were spent exploring the sites as per tour schedule.

When it came to leave Beijing and travel to Xian via bullet train, Mark took me to the station and actually came with me all the way to the train seat to make sure I was safely on the train! Candy the tour guide in Xian, had already sent a photo of where to meet once I arrived in Xian, and sure enough Candy was waiting for me, and we went to the hotel and Candy gave me some advice about the local area to explore that evening. Xian again was a tour like clockwork and the sights were amazing to see. After a few days in Xian, it was time to travel to Shanghai, Candy took me to the airport and see me off at the security gate. It was all smooth at the airport with the signs in English and check in info on boarding card, so you could not really go wrong.

When I arrived in Shanghai, my tour guide was waiting for me (very big airport with lots of exits) and he took me to the hotel. Again he was able to provide local information so I could explore that evening. The following morning Mark met me, it was raining very badly and foggy, he suggested that we change the tour a bit because I was due to go to the observation deck, but it was a bit fruitless due to the weather. Instead I mentioned one of my most favourite movies was Empire of the sun, so we instead added a few extra stops to the tour as they were in the city not far, this was not a problem to do and Mark was happy to show me the different places. After the tour of Shanghai, I departed.

A few tips,

-Try to make sure your phone will work in China, this is really useful to keep in contact with the tour guide, and family! Whatsapp/Signal and many other apps do not work in China. Apple iMessage does. The hotels also have phones.

-Start slowly with the food, I personally took a few days to get used to the food. If you struggle, there are western fast food chains in all the places. Although you will need to pay with cash as most do not accept cards. Only Wechat pay which would not work for me. But you can generally point at the menu and order with cash at the front till! There are lots of cash points also.

-Be prepared some traffic, as in any major city and city noise in general.

-There are many toilets about and at the sites.

So all in all this was an amazing experience, I was a bit apprehensive about travel to China, but I did not need to be. You need to consider your own circumstances and be aware of laws as when visiting any country, but rest assured China discovery sincerely want to look after you and I explored on my own the China cities, it was very safe and I had no issues at all. I can only recommend China discovery if China is somewhere you want to visit. And after visiting, I would strongly recommend you visit with a tour company. While some signs are in English, most people do not speak English and there are often very different processes that you need your guide to assist you with. Boarding the train for example, is a very different process than in the UK. Without a guide or anyone speaking English, you could get tripped up from the practical stuff. So I do recommend China discovery and getting a guide 100% worth every penny.

I also wish to thank Rita who arranged the tour at China Discovery, she answered my questions quickly and could not help me more. I will never forget the experience for the rest of my life.
