Wireless connectivity

Less wires, more control.

Life moves fast. So do we. Staying on top of it means staying connected, so our technology seamlessly turns your smartphone into an integrated feature of TUCSON Plug-in Hybrid.

Your smartphone is the key to unlocking doors, starting your engine, and more. It even lets you share your TUCSON Plug-in Hybrid with other drivers. Just text them your Digital Key, which is now standard.

Near Field Communication (NFC) digital smartphone key requires a compatible Android smartphone and an appropriately equipped 2023 TUCSON Plug-In Hybrid vehicle. Not all Android devices are compatible. TUCSON Plug-In Hybrid vehicle must be equipped with smart key with push button start, wireless device charging, and Audio Video Navigation System 5.0 (or newer) or Display Audio 2.0. Lock/unlock functionality works on front doors only. Features and specifications subject to change. See your Owner's Manual for additional details and limitations.

SmartStream 1.6L Turbocharged GDI 4-cyl. Hybrid engine Standard

8-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC® Standard

Standard on Limited trim.

Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) assists driver in changing lanes by providing a live view of the blind spots on either side of the vehicle and an audible alert if another vehicle is detected. Turn signal must be activated and other system limitations apply. Do not rely exclusively on BVM. It is the driver's responsibility to be aware of the surroundings and ensure it is clear before changing lanes or directions. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.

When the vehicle is parked and the engine has been turned off, the Ultrasonic Rear Occupant Alert (UROA) can help to alert the driver if it detects movement from a child or pet. Upon exiting and locking the vehicle, the UROA may provide visual, audible, and/or Bluelink alerts if the interior overhead sensor detects movement. UROA is not a substitute for driver attentiveness. Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle. Bluelink notification requires a Bluelink-equipped vehicle with an active Bluelink account. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.

Standard on Limited trim.

Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) can remotely help park the vehicle. However, several factors can impact RSPA performance. RSPA may not function correctly if one or more of the parking sensors is damaged, dirty or covered or if weather conditions (heavy rain, snow or fog) interfere with sensor operation. Always inspect the parking area with your own eyes. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.

Never program touchscreen navigation while driving. GPS mapping may not be detailed in all areas or reflect current road regulations. On trim levels where navigation system is available but not a standard feature, it is available as part of a specific options package. Not available on all models. See dealer regarding availability.

The smart trunk will release when the smart key is within 40 inches of the detection area for at least 3 seconds. Radio transmitters and other vehicle smart keys may interfere in normal operation of the feature. See Owner’s Manual for further details and limitations. Make sure you close the trunk before driving.

Standard on all trims.

When the vehicle is parked, Safe Exit Warning (SEW) can alert the driver when a vehicle is approaching from behind. SEW does not work in all situations and is not a substitute for driver or passenger attentiveness. Always be aware of your surroundings and attentive of approaching vehicles. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.

Forward collision-avoidance assist with junction turning (fca-jt) .

Standard on all trims.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Junction Turning (FCA-JT) is intended to be a supplement to safe driving practices. The system is not designed to detect certain stationary objects such as trees or poles, and may not detect all vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists under certain conditions. The system’s Junction Turning function operates when the vehicle’s left turn signal is activated, the vehicle is travelling between approximately 6-19 mph and the oncoming vehicle’s speed is between approximately 19-44 mph. The system is a driver assistance system and is not a substitute for safe driving. The driver is responsible for being attentive and maintaining control of the vehicle, and should not wait for the system's alerts before braking as there may not be sufficient time to brake safely. See Owner’s Manual for further details and limitations.

Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go

Smart Cruise Control (SCC) is not a collision avoidance or warning device. SCC is for highway use only and should not be used in poor weather, heavy or varying traffic, or on winding or slippery roads. Driver remains responsible to slow or stop the vehicle to avoid a collision. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.

Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop & Go and Curve Control

Standard on Limited Trim.

Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (N-SCC) with Stop & Go and Curve Control can help automatically adjust vehicle speed when driving on highways by using road information from the navigation system. N-SCC only operates on main roads of select highways, and does not operate at interchanges or junctions. N-SCC should not be used in poor weather, heavy or varying traffic, on winding or slippery roads, or if the navigation system is not working properly. N-SCC is a driver convenience feature and not a collision avoidance or warning device. Driver remains responsible for checking the speed limit and distance to the vehicle ahead, steering the vehicle and slowing or stopping the vehicle to avoid a collision. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) assists the driver by warning of other cars in the blind spot region. It senses the rear side territory of the vehicle when it is traveling over 20 mph. There are limitations to the function, range, detection and clarity of the system. It will not detect all vehicles or objects in the blind spot. Its operation depends on the size, distance, angle and relative speed difference between your car and other cars. BCA may not operate if sensors are obscured in any way. Do not rely exclusively on BCA. BCA is a supplemental system and the driver must still be attentive and exercise caution when driving. It is the driver's responsibility to be aware of the surroundings and ensure it is clear before changing lanes or directions. See Owner’s Manual for further details and limitations.

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) can alert the driver of a potential collision by providing an audible warning and/or applying braking. RCCA is active when the vehicle is in reverse and operating at low speeds. Never rely exclusively on RCCA. RCCA cannot prevent all collisions and may not provide alerts or braking in all conditions. Always look over your shoulder and use your mirrors to confirm rear clearance. There are limitations to the function, detection, range and clarity of the system. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.

Lane Following Assist (LFA)

Lane Following Assist (LFA) helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane only when the lane markings are clearly visible on the road. Lane Following Assist will not work under all circumstances and will not prevent loss of control. Lane Following Assist is a supplemental assist, and does not replace the need for extreme care and attention by the driver. See Owner’s Manual for further details and limitations.

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) will not work under all circumstances. It operates above 40 mph and only when it is able to detect painted lane markings. It cannot function if the lane markings cannot be seen clearly. If the lines cannot be seen clearly due to poor road conditions, weather, or lighting conditions, it may not function. It also may not function on very rough roads, when walls, curbs or concrete barriers are close by, or if following another car too closely. Since it "sees" the lane markings using a camera in the upper windshield area, it is imperative this area be clear and free of blockage such as stickers, dirt, snow, tinting material, markings and labels. Lane Keeping Assist is not a substitute for safe driving practices, but is a supplemental assist only. The driver is responsible for always maintaining command and control of the vehicle and must keep hands on the wheel at all times. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.

Highway Driving Assist (HDA)

Highway Driving Assist (HDA), is for highway use only and can help keep the vehicle centered in its lane while maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead only when the lane markings are clearly visible on the road and should not be used in poor weather, heavy or varying traffic, or on winding or slippery roads. HDA will not work under all circumstances and will not prevent loss of control. Driver remains responsible to slow or stop the vehicle to avoid a collision. See Owner’s Manual for further details and limitations.

Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM)

Driver attention warning (daw) .

Driver Attention Warning (DAW) is only a warning to inform the driver of a potential lack of driver attention or drowsiness. It does not detect and provide an alert in every situation. It is the driver's responsibility to remain alert at all times. See Owner’s Manual for further details and limitations.

Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)

Standard on SEL trim.

Upon turning the engine off, Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) will provide a visual alert on the instrument cluster. ROA is not a substitute for driver attentiveness. Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.

Ultrasonic Rear Occupant Alert (Ultrasonic ROA)

2025 Hyundai Tucson Up Close: Targeted Changes Add Up in a Big Way

hyundai tucson 2025 02 exterior front angle jpg

By Mike Hanley

It was only three model years ago that Hyundai released a fully redesigned Tucson compact SUV — a model that earned a solid third-place finish in our 2023 Compact SUV Challenge — and the vehicle is getting a mid-cycle refresh for the 2025 model year. The updates include modest exterior updates and more extensive interior changes that address some issues with the current Tucson’s user interface, and we saw them on the floor of the 2024 New York International Auto Show.

Changes Inside and Out

With its creased flanks and wide grille that intermingles with the SUV’s front lighting elements, the current Tucson is already one of the more dramatically styled compact SUVs available today. Hyundai says the 2025 version gets a new grille, updated front and rear bumpers, revised daytime running lights and new alloy wheels. The tweaks don’t significantly change the Tucson’s overall appearance, but they do make the front lights stand out more.

hyundai tucson 2025 22 exterior front angle jpg

The updates for 2025 are more apparent inside, with the biggest changes evident on the dashboard and center console. The updated dashboard design now accommodates two 12.3-inch screens side by side — one for the digital instrument panel and another for the infotainment system. The instrument cluster screen is optional, but the 12.3-inch infotainment screen is standard and includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, which wasn’t offered on the SUV’s previous 10.25-inch display, to our constant chagrin. Together, the screens create a curved design element that stretches across half of the dash; to the right of them is a dashboard shelf for small items.

One aspect of the Tucson’s interior that hasn’t been particularly well received are its touch-sensitive dashboard controls that go in most trim levels, which trade familiar buttons and knobs for a shiny black panel with touch-sensitive areas to control different functions. Hyundai must have gotten some complaints about this because the new control panel now includes volume and tuning knobs as well as temperature knobs for the climate system. There are still some touch-based climate controls on a panel between the knobs, however.

The push-button gear selector of some Tucsons is also no more; it’s been replaced with a column-mounted gear selector we’ve seen in other Hyundais, including the 2024 Sonata mid-size sedan . Hyundai says the new gear selector means there’s more space on the center console for stuff, and the redesigned console does create a more functional space, with an upper area with cupholders and a wireless charging pad and a lower open storage area.

Space in the front of the cabin is good for adults, and the backseat is roomy, too, with a standard reclining backrest. It’s big enough for taller people to ride in the front and rear seats at the same time.

Through a combination of styling tweaks, feature enhancements and functional updates, the 2025 Tucson should be easier for owners to use while offering the value for which the automaker is known. It’s not a radical rethink of the Tucson by any means, but that isn’t really what this SUV needed.

The 2024 Hyundai Tucson is one of the best small SUVs

The 2024 Hyundai Tucson Offers Safety Beyond Its Price

The 2024 Hyundai Tucson is one of the best small SUVs on the market. It delivers competitive performance and also has a spacious interior. However, one of its biggest bragging rights is that the compact SUV is one of the safest in its class. This is the case not only because of its safety ratings but also because of the features it offers. Luckily, the same is true for the 2023 Hyundai Tucson .

The 2024 Hyundai Tucson has high safety ratings

The 2024 Hyundai Tucson is one of the best small SUVs because it’s safe. For starters, it’s a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety . This rating means buyers can trust the Tucson for its use of seat belts and child restraints, crashworthiness, etc. Though a small SUV, this rating also makes the Hyundai Tucson a solid family vehicle.

The 2023 Hyundai Tucson is also solid for safety

Buyers will also be happy to know that the 2024 Hyundai Tucson has a five out of five-star rating from the NHTSA. This means not only has the SUV been crash tested, but it means that drivers and passengers can feel safe in the unfortunate event of a car accident. It’s also notable that the 2023 Hyundai Tucson has similar ratings as the new model.

It has a ton of safety features

The 2024 Hyundai Tucson is also one of the best small SUVs because of the safety features it includes. Of course, the 2023 Hyundai Tucson has many of the same offerings. Like all Hyundai vehicles, this model has the Hyundai SmartSense suite of features, which has numerous standard options. In fact, it may be one of the best on the market for what it has to offer. The features include:

  • Smart Cruise Control With Stop & Go
  • Advanced Forward Collision Avoidance Assist
  • Driver Attention Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Lane Following Assist
  • Safe Exit Warning

Of course, the 2024 Hyundai Tucson also has a number of features that are only available on higher trims. Still, this is one of the most well-rounded options in its class for safety.

Overall, the 2024 Hyundai Tucson is a solid option for small SUV buyers. It’s safe, delivers solid performance, and has a modern interior. Beyond this, the Hyundai Tucson is still an affordable SUV with a starting price of $27,500. It also has a five-year or 60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. This means buyers have protection despite this being a reliable option.

Select a year

  • Lows Awkward touch controls, there are more efficient hybrid powertrains out there.
  • Verdict The Tucson Hybrid and PHEV cure our complaints with the underpowered gas-only model, doing so with friendly pricing and unexpected refinement.

What's New for 2024?

The big switcheroo is the addition of a sporty-looking N-Line trim for the Tucson Hybrid. Last year this trim was offered only for the nonhybrid Tucson, but its move to the hybrid means better acceleration, fitting for a variant inspired by the automaker’s hotted-up N cars. Inside, all trims of the Tucson Hybrid and Tucson PHEV will fit the 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen formerly reserved for the SEL Convenience and Limited trims. After adding standard safety features last year, Hyundai will do the same again in 2024. Haptic feedback through the steering wheel for lane-keep assist and blind-spot collision avoidance is included now, as are rear side airbags. Outside, Amazon Gray and Hampton Gray paints are exclusive to the hybrid and PHEV.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2024 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid starts at $33,950 and goes up to $46,825 depending on the trim and options.

A plug-in hybrid SUV for under $40,000 is a big deal. We still like the SEL trim even though the switch to the 10.3-inch infotainment screen means losing the volume knob that came with the smaller, eight-inch screen. The SEL lacks some luxuries found on the Limited trim like the panoramic roof and leather-trimmed seats, but the SEL still offers plenty of convenience and safety features like LED lighting, wireless phone charging, and a hands-free tailgate. The challenge with the Tucson PHEV is finding one—Hyundai only sells it in 15 states.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

This version of the Tucson is worth a look just for the extra power, whether in hybrid or plug-in hybrid form. The turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas engine and electric motor make a combined 226 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in the hybrid, or 261 horses and the same torque in the PHEV. Shifting through a six-speed automatic transmission and with standard all-wheel drive, these figures take nearly two seconds off the 0-60 time compared to the nonhybrid Tucson. No, it’s not the 302-hp shove you’d get from a Toyota RAV4 Prime , but it is the kind of pep you’ll be glad to have at every stop light and highway on-ramp. At our test track, our loaded Limited hybrid test vehicle managed a 7.1-second run to 60 mph . In everyday driving, the solid steering, comfy ride, and confident handling complement one of the electrified Tucson’s best features: its hushed interior when at cruising speed.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and PHEV can tow up to 2000 pounds, which is more than Honda CR-V and Chevy Equinox, but less than the Mazda CX-50's 3500-pound maximum capacity.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

Plug-in hybrid Tucson PHEVs use a 13.8-kWh battery pack that delivers an EPA-estimated 33 miles of electric-only driving. A 7.2-kW onboard charger can fully recharge the battery in about two hours when connected to a Level 2 charging station.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The EPA estimates that the Tucson Hybrid is good for 38 mpg city and 38 mpg highway; the plug-in hybrid model earned a rating of 80 MPGe combined and delivered 33 miles of electric-only driving in the EPA's test. When compared to the gas-only Tucson, those numbers are pleasingly better than the 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway ratings it earned. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, the hybrid model failed to deliver its EPA-estimated 38 mpg, delivering just 28 mpg; we haven't tested the plug-in hybrid on our route yet. For more information about the Tucson's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Hyundai’s design department has proved itself adept at creating modern interiors for affordable offerings, and the Tucson doesn’t disappoint. Its uncluttered dashboard design is a mix of dark textures with bright accents that houses a digital gauge display, a large infotainment screen, a touch-sensitive control panel for the climate system, and a push-button shifter. The cabin makes a comfortable space for four adults, and we were able to fit nine carry-on suitcases behind the second-row seats. With the second-row seats folded, luggage capacity rose to 22 bags.

2024 hyundai tucson hybrid phev interior

Infotainment and Connectivity

A now-standard 10.3-inch touchscreen comes with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Buyers need to step up to the Limited trim for extras like Bose premium audio. Other high-tech offerings include Hyundai's digital key smartphone app, which provides lock and unlock features as well as an option for remote start.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

A host of driver-assistance features are available, many of which come standard. For more information about the hybrid Tucson’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Available adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

In the compact-SUV market, only one rival offers as much warranty coverage as the Tucson Hybrid, and that's its corporate twin, the Kia Sportage. The Hyundai still holds an advantage over the Kia in this area, though, thanks to its generous complimentary scheduled maintenance program.

  • Limited warranty five years or 60,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance covers three years or 36,000 miles

2025 Hyundai Tuscon and Santa Cruz sport updated interiors and more

Hyundai has taken the sheets off the 2025 Hyundai Tuscon and 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz, featuring numerous updates to keep the models competitive in their respective classes.

2025 Hyundai Tuscon

The 2025 Hyundai Tucson is the company’s entry into the highly competitive compact crossover segment. As such, it must remain as competitive as possible, and Hyundai is using this refresh as an opportunity to address multiple pain points from the current iteration.

hyundai tucson travel 2023

Outside, the 2025 Hyundai Tucson features mild styling tweaks. The most obvious of these is an updated frontend treatment that features an updated grille/daytime running light/headlight arrangement that includes fewer individual lighting units and a slightly more squared-off look. The general shape of the rest of the vehicle retain much the same look as the current Tuscon, while the rear also remains largely unchanged, with slight updates to the bumper detailing. New wheel designs and colors will also be available on the updated Tucson.

hyundai tucson travel 2023

The current Hyundai Tucson interior has received its fair share of criticism for its fiddly touch-sensitive climate controls. The 2025 Hyundai Tucson features a complete redesign of the center console, replacing those touch-sensitive buttons with physical knobs and switches for easier use while in motion. Hyundai is also introducing a curved digital cockpit design that features two 12.3-inch digital displays mounted side-by-side, powered by an upgraded processor, and with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A new steering wheel rounds out the interior updates, as does a new wireless charging pad placement and enhanced USB-C outlets.

58753-2025TucsonNLine

The 2025 Hyundai Tuscon will continue to be available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and gas configurations. The hybrid now makes 231 hp, a slight increase from the current version, while the plug-in hybrid model also gains a slight boost to 268 hp thanks to a more powerful electric motor. Both hybrid and plug-in hybrid will come standard with AWD. The standard, no hybrid version will continue to feature a 2.5-liter gas engine producing 187 hp and will be available in both FWD and AWD configurations.

The electrified versions of the 2025 Hyundai Tucson will also feature a new “baby mode” that allows for gentler, less sudden acceleration mapping to ensure your precious bundles of joy are not awakened from their slumbers should you decide to suddenly mash the accelerator peddle.

Updated standard safety equipment will include a Forward Attention Warning that monitors the driver’s gaze and can even bring the vehicle to a complete stop should it detect the driver is no longer responsive/engaged.

2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz

As the Tucson and Santa Cruz are sister vehicles that share numerous components, including most of their interiors and parts of their exteriors, many of the updates made to the 2025 Hyundai Tucson also find their way to the 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz.

hyundai tucson travel 2023

Outside, the 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz receives much the same new frontend treatment for a more rugged look, though even more squared-off and boxy here so as to emphasize the Santa Cruz’s truckiness. New wheels and color options also join the mix of updates, while the XRT trim gets its own specific front and rear facias as well as all-terrain tires mounted to unique 18-inch rims.

hyundai tucson travel 2023

The inside of the 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz shares many of the same updates as the Tucson, including a fully updated center console and screen layout for improved ease of use, as well as a new steering wheel. Rear seat passengers will enjoy a new center armrest that features two cupholders.

58818-2025SantaCruz

Powertrain options for the 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz remain unchanged. Buyers will be able to choose between a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 191 hp or a 2.5-liter turbo making 281 hp. Both powertrains will come with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, with the turbo model capable of towing up to 5,000 lbs.

Both the 2025 Hyundai Tuscon and 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz will begin rolling into US dealers this summer, with updated pricing information released closer to their on-sale date.

2025 Hyundai Santa Fe XRT and more off-road focussed versions of Palisade and Tucson confirmed for Australia to take on Toyota LandCruiser, Subaru Forester and more

hyundai tucson travel 2023

Hyundai confirmed its worst-kept secret - it’s toughening up and launching the XRT sub-brand in Australia.

The all-new Santa Fe XRT is coming our way, as was widely expected, but the brand confirmed at this week’s New York Motor Show that the Tucson XRT and Palisade XRT are also likely headed Down Under.

Instead of being limited to just a single model, XRT will now effectively become the company’s latest sub-brand, alongside its N-badged performance models and Ioniq electric cars. While not quite as rugged as a Toyota LandCruiser , the XRT trim line will focus on more practical elements, such as increased ride height and all-terrain tyres. It will also include some unique styling touches, including black wheels.

  • Not what Hyundai used to be: 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV aims upmarket ahead of Australian launch

However, it should be noted that the XRT variants on display at the New York show offered different levels of change between them. For example, the Palisade XRT had unique black alloy wheels but missed out on all-terrain tyres. Whereas the Santa Fe had a unique wheel and chunkier tyre package.

Hyundai Tucson XRT pictured here

Hyundai Australia is light on details, admitting it cannot confirm exactly when the first XRT will arrive locally, but has made it clear it is working on a plan for all three currently revealed variants.

Australian XRT models may vary from the US versions, as ours will be sourced from South Korean factories, not the US.

Hyundai Santa Fe XRT pictured here

Hyundai revealed the Santa Fe XRT in concept form in mid-2023, featuring an even more rugged look complete with a ladder to a roof storage system and side storage pods on the rear exterior (in an obvious nod to the Land Rover Defender ).

Hyundai said at the time that the XRT concept was “tailored to cater diverse needs of outdoor enthusiasts” and “is designed to ignite the ultimate adventure spirit and focuses on unleashing the desires of those seeking the thrill of the wild".

Clearly the brand is trying to expand the appeal of its SUV models, particularly attracting those who want a more adventure-capable car. This should help improve the brand’s chances against the likes of the LandCruiser, Defender and more compact offerings like the Subaru Forester.

*Based on a 5-year estimate with 15,000 miles driven per year.

True Cost To Own ®

Edmunds.com's True Cost to Own ® (TCO ® ) is proprietary data that helps you estimate the total five-year cost of buying and owning a vehicle — including some items you may not have taken into consideration. A benefit of using our TCO ® tool is that you can easily compare the five-year totals for different vehicles and make a more informed choice.

The components of TCO ® are depreciation, interest on financing, taxes and fees, insurance premiums, fuel, maintenance, repairs and any federal tax credit that may be available. In order to estimate certain mileage-dependent costs, we assume that vehicles will be driven 15,000 miles per year. For a used vehicle, we calculate the years the vehicle has been driven using the nominal difference between the current calendar year and the vehicle's model year, and assume that it was driven 15,000 miles during each of those years.

Note that TCO ® is a comparative tool, not a predictive tool — your actual five-year cost of owning a particular vehicle will vary depending on your personal circumstances, such as your driving history and the number of miles you drive.

How We Calculate True Cost to Own ®

The True Cost to Own ® calculations use the following set of assumptions:

  • Ownership expenses are estimated for a five-year period
  • You will drive 15,000 miles per year
  • You are financing the vehicle using traditional financing, not lease financing
  • You have an above-average credit rating for the purpose of determining your finance rate
  • You are making a 10% down payment on the vehicle at purchase
  • Your loan term is 60 months

Using proprietary formulas, we calculate the five-year costs for the seven cost categories that make up the TCO ® (depreciation, insurance, financing, taxes & fees, fuel, maintenance and repairs). We also take into account any applicable federal tax credit.

Explanation of True Cost to Own ® Terms

For new vehicles, the Total Cash Price displayed is the vehicle's True Market Value ® (TMV ® ) price plus typically equipped options, destination charge, base tax and fees assessed by your state, and, if applicable, gas guzzler tax; less any widely available manufacturer-to-customer cash rebates. (However, we do not account for other types of cash rebates or incentives because of the variability of those offers and their eligibility requirements.) For used vehicles, the Total Cash Price shown is the sum of the vehicle's Private Party TMV ® price in "clean" condition plus typically equipped options, and base tax and fees assessed by your state.

This is the amount by which the value of a vehicle declines from its purchase price to its estimated resale value. The purchase price employed is the vehicle's Total Cash Price, minus any taxes and fees included in that amount. We estimate the resale value assuming the vehicle will be in "clean" condition, will be driven 15,000 miles per year, and will be sold to a private party.

This is the estimated average annual insurance premium in your state. The premium has been determined based on annual premium data for defined driver profiles and coverages (liability, comprehensive and collision) from a major national insurer. While this information is specific to vehicle make, model, model year and body type, your personal information is not taken into consideration and could greatly alter the actual premium quoted by an insurer. Factors that will affect your rate include your age, marital status, credit history, driving record, and the garaging address of your vehicle.

This is the interest expense on a loan in the amount of the Total Cash Price, assuming a 10% down payment and a loan term of 60 months. The interest rate used is the prevailing rate that banks and other direct automotive lenders are currently charging consumers in your geographic region who have above average credit scores.

Note: Even if you do not finance your vehicle, the inclusion of financing cost in determining True Cost to Own ® is still appropriate because it reflects the estimated "opportunity cost" (i.e., the amount you may earn) if you invest the Purchase Price instead of using it to purchase the vehicle.

This consists of the base sales (or use) taxes, license and registration fees in your state, and gas guzzler tax if applicable. These taxes and fees are often based on a percentage of the purchase price, and generally decrease as the vehicle ages and loses its value.

Note: the state sales/use tax rate that we use includes the average local and county taxes assessed in that state.

This expense is based on the revised EPA mileage ratings, assuming consumption consists of 45% highway and 55% city driving and that the vehicle is equipped with the transmission that is standard equipment for that vehicle. Cost estimates are based on the current one-year moving average of self-service prices in your state, using regular unleaded gasoline for vehicles whose manufacturers require regular; premium unleaded gasoline for vehicles whose manufacturers recommend or require premium; or diesel fuel for diesel vehicles.

This is the estimated expense of the two types of maintenance: scheduled and unscheduled. Scheduled maintenance is the performance of factory-recommended items at periodic mileage and/or calendar intervals. Unscheduled maintenance includes wheel alignment and the replacement of items such as the battery, brakes, headlamps, hoses, exhaust system parts, taillight/turn signal bulbs, tires and wiper blades/inserts. Estimated tire replacement costs are supplied to Edmunds.com by The Tire Rack, Inc.

This is the estimated expense for repairs not covered by the vehicle manufacturer's warranties over the five years from the date of purchase, assuming 15,000 miles are driven annually. We estimate this expense based on the cost of a typical "zero deductible" extended warranty for the vehicle, minus the estimated amount of that cost that consists of the warranty provider's overhead and profit.

Federal Tax Credits

This is the tax credit that is provided for under the Energy Policy Act of 2005. A tax credit is subtracted directly from the total amount of federal tax you owe. The tax credit is for electric fuel vehicles.

The credit is only available to the original purchaser of a new, qualifying vehicle, and is subject to certain "phase out" rules that we take into consideration when computing TCO ® . If a qualifying vehicle is leased to a consumer, the leasing company may claim the credit.
