The Tortuga Promise

At Tortuga, our mission is to make travel easier. Our advice and recommendations are based on years of travel experience. We only recommend products that we use on our own travels.

Table of Contents

The best travel soaps are multi-use, concentrated, and TSA friendly.

Travel soap – although it’s not something that often comes up in conversation when we’re travel-planning, we all use it. Whether we’re  packing for a safari  trip in Africa,  train travel in Europe , a  Peruvian journey  into the rainforest, a  Southeast Asian expedition , an  Australian Outback  tour, or  beach vacation , we rarely leave home without it. Because the amount of liquid we can fly with is limited, so are our soap choices. Since we value packing light, we’re always looking for ways the items we pack can do double duty. Soap is no exception.

Whether your soap preferences are liquid, bar, multi-use, eco-friendly, scented, unscented, or something entirely different, finding a version that travels well is important. If you’re like me, you consider how and where things are made, the environmental footprint we’re leaving, and the treatment of our animal friends in testing. And then there are those of us with allergies and sensitivities, doing our best to keep our skin happy at home and on the go. There are a lot of options for travel soap, but some products are definitely better than others.

Below are our picks for the best travel soaps – from bar to liquid to, yes, even those that do double duty as a detergent – and containers to pack them in.

How to Choose the Best Soaps for Travel

I always knew there was a difference in scented and unscented soaps, but I had no idea there were so many different travel soap options. The range stretches from soaps that keep us clean or act as laundry detergent to shampoo, dish soap, and the multitaskers that do all of those things at once!

In today’s world, we check labels on the food we consume and the products we purchase. We’re thoughtful of the bigger picture, knowledgeable about the origin of things, and ethically conscious of carbon footprints. We intentionally allow our concern for humanity and the planet to affect our purchasing power. When choosing travel soap, look for:

  • Multi-use products
  • Organic, natural products
  • Products free of fragrances, dyes, parabens and preservatives
  • Essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances
  • Fair trade products
  • Biodegradable
  • Eco-friendly options
  • Anti-bacterial elements
  • Baby-mild/hypoallergenic
  • Concentrated soaps

When we travel, we’re careful in our choice of locations, tours, and even luggage . A  travel backpack  allows us to carry everything we need on our own two shoulders and under the seat in front of us. Why wouldn’t we choose travel soaps by the same criteria of portability and packability?

The Best Overall Travel Soap

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is bronners.jpg

The best overall soap for travel is Dr. Bronner’s  magic soap. It consistently gets rave reviews from experienced travelers, including the members of Team Tortuga.

This multi-purpose, vegetable-based Castile soap can act as shampoo, soap, deodorant, and shaving cream, laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, insect repellent, and more. Some people even swear by it as toothpaste. It tastes kind of gross.

Multi-use, available in both bar and liquid, concentrated, biodegradable, available world-wide, scented and unscented, fair trade, 100% organic, and not tested on animals; that’s hard to beat.

You can’t go wrong with this magic potion in a bottle or a bar. Buy the big one and take it in a GoToob, or buy it perfectly packaged to fly in a travel-size.

Concentrated & Biodegradable Travel Soaps

These eco-friendly options mean you use less and the soaps breakdown naturally, although they may still contaminate water supplies.

  • Campsuds : available in citronella, lavender and peppermint oil, this soap doubles as insect repellent.
  • Sea to Summit Trek and Travel Liquid Soap : concentrated, biodegradable, and paraben-free, this liquid soap works well for urban and outdoor adventures alike.
  • Lush concentrated soaps : this solid soap is vegan and unpackaged for eco-friendly measures, but also ultra-concentrated–so you get a lot of washes with just a little.

Best travel soap for kids

Hypoallergenic & Child Friendly Travel Soaps

If you’ve got allergies, sensitive skin, or are traveling with a child, you might need to use a  GoToob  to take a small amount of your favorite soap. Try these:

  • Dove Beauty Bar or liquid soap is hypoallergenic and widely available.
  • Neutrogena transparent facial bar is great for people with sensitive skin.
  • Babyganics is great for kids and babies.

The Best Travel Laundry Detergents

Your body isn’t the only thing you need soap to clean while traveling. To wash your clothes on the go, these are the best travel detergents:

  • Laundry soap sheets (Travelon) : Great for hand-washing clothes in your hotel sink, these sheets rehydrate into soap with a bit of water. Since they’re sheets, they’re TSA-compliant, and super compact.
  • Sea to Summit Pocket Laundry Wash : Simply add water to one of these sheets to use as a liquid soap on your laundry.
  • Well Earth Sheets : These laundry detergent sheets come in a compostable package, perfect for zero-waste travel.
  • The Laundress Wash and Stain Bar : The Laundress specializes in soaps for different kinds of clothing, so it’s no surprise that they have a super-portable bar of soap you can use to wash clothes. Since it’s not liquid, it’s TSA-compliant.

Best all in one travel soap

The Best All-in-One Travel Soap Options

All-in-one travel soaps will do it all: hair, body, and face. They even work as travel laundry detergent in a pinch. While our favorite all-in-one travel soap is Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Soap , these are also great options:

  • Jack Black All-Over Wash : This liquid soap works as a face and body wash, as well as a shampoo.
  • Sea to Summit’s Wilderness Wash : this super-concentrated, all-purpose soap works as a body wash, shampoo, and even for washing clothes and dishes. It’s also biodegradable and safe to use outdoors.

best travel bar soaps

The Best Travel Soap Sheets

For an ultra compact soap option that’s not subject to TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, try a travel soap sheet. Soap sheets rehydrate when wet to create suds to clean yourself with.

  • Soap Leaves (Lifeventure) : At roughly the size of a packet of floss, these little soap leaves pack about 50 washes in each container.
  • Buly 1803 : These compact, orange scented soap sheets suds into a full wash’s worth of body and face soap with just a bit of water.

Best travel shampoo

Waterless Shampoos & Shampoo Bars

Perhaps you’ve encountered the aerosol “dry shampoo,” but have you seen the no-rinse shampoo that’s a liquid (carry on sized, of course, that requires no water whatsoever? Just apply, lather, and towel dry. Yep. Really.

  • No Rinse Shampoo : For when you don’t have any water, use this no-rinse, no-water shampoo to clean your hair on the go.
  • Lush Shampoo and Conditioner Bars : Bar isn’t only for bodies. Lush’s shampoo and conditioner bars are like bar soap, for your hair. Like bar soap, they’re great for travel since they aren’t subject to TSA’s 3-1-1 rule.

Travel soap container

Best Liquid and Bar Soap Travel Containers

The best travel soap containers will be TSA compliant (for liquid soap) and leak-proof. For bar soap, they’ll ideally also provide a way for soap to dry, rather than sitting in a puddly mess.

Matador FlatPack Soap Bar Case ($13)

This fabric bar soap container is great for travel because it’s ultralight, compact, and won’t get crushed in your bag like a cheap plastic one. It’s also at once leak-proof and breathable – so your soap will dry inside, but not leak all over the inside of your luggage .

GoToob ($7+)

These reusable, silicon travel containers are our go-to for any liquid, gel, or cream – whether it’s soap, shampoo, or sunblock. They’re easy to fill, and even easier to wash between trips. You’ll find a range of TSA-compliant sizes.

Can You Bring Soap in Your Carry On ?

Yes, you can both liquid soap and bars of soap on a plane in your carry on . If you’re traveling with liquid soap, it must follow the  3-1-1 rule and be under 3.4 ounces (100 ml). You can bring bar soap of any size through airport security.

How to Pack a Bar of Soap

When traveling with a bar of soap, don’t just toss it in your toiletry bag. Invest in a reusable container like Matador’s FlatPack Soap Bar Case ($13) to keep it from getting all over your other items. Before you pack it, wipe it down with a towel to avoid any excess moisture in your case. When showering, rest it in a dry spot to help it last longer.

Packing Tips for Travel Soaps

  • Squeeze some of your larger liquid soap into TSA approved containers that are 3.4 ounces or smaller, like those by GoToob .
  • Pack concentrated soaps into contact lens cases.
  • Break down your favorite soap bars into smaller sizes to turn that bar soap into a travel-friendly size.
  • Adopt a multi-use soap, like Dr. Bronner’s , for all of your travel needs.
  • For those with sensitive skin, test a new soap at home prior to travel. Baby products are often a good choice for sensitive skin
  • Check products for allergens (for example coconut oil, argan oil, or other nut based).
  • Dr.Bronner’s is the best multi-purpose travel soap for body, laundry, and hair.
  • Consider switching to bar soaps to make room for in your liquids bag.
  • Use GoToob and Matador travel soap to pack your travel soaps.
  • When choosing a travel soap, look for a multi-use product that can double for hair and body, or even laundry.
  • Take your skin sensitivities into consideration and always test new soaps at home, before you travel.

The 9 Very Best Bar Soaps

Portrait of Arielle Avila

If you’re in the market for a body wash, consider the humble bar soap. While typically associated with handwashing, this skin-care category has come a long way in recent years. Plenty of bar-soap options are now just as effective — and much more sustainable — than their body-wash counterparts. Picking the right one for you and your skin’s needs can be overwhelming, so I asked dermatologists and skin-care experts and scoured our archives for the best options in a range of preferences. Use the links below to jump right to the type of bar soap you’re looking for, or read on to learn more about the criteria we considered as we assembled this list.

Best overall | Best moisturizing | Best for sensitive skin | Best for acne | Best exfoliating | Best gentle exfoliating | Best vegan | Best unscented vegan | Best less expensive vegan

What we’re looking for

Active ingredients: In our search for the best, we looked at everyday cleansing bars, exfoliating bars, acne-clearing bars, and more. Active ingredients will vary depending on the soap’s intended purpose, so we’ve made sure to note those ingredients here.

Scent: If you love a fragrant soap, we included a range of options with different scents. However, scented soaps tend to include ingredients that can irritate more sensitive skin, so we’ve included a range of unscented options in case your skin (or nose) is sensitive.

Price: Bar soaps are typically inexpensive, but depending on the ingredients and the brand’s manufacturing practices, they can run upwards of $10 to $15 for a bar. We’ve noted the size as well as the cost per ounce, so you can decide which product works best for your budget.

Best bar soap overall

Dove Beauty Bar, Original

Sodium lauroyl isethionate, lauric acid | Fresh scent | 2.6 oz. (approx. $0.05/oz.)

Dove Beauty Bar is the most affordable soap listed here but is still made with a mix of quality ingredients, which is why it’s our best-overall pick. Dermatologist Dr. Mary P. Lupo typically doesn’t recommend bar soaps because of the irritating and drying lathering agents found in most formulas. But Dove’s contains sodium lauroyl isethionate, a “particularly gentle lathering agent” that doesn’t penetrate or irritate the skin, and the soothing, antimicrobial ingredient lauric acid. Dermatologist Dr. Hadley King also likes that Dove is “free of harsh detergents, so it doesn’t strip the skin,” and it comes in lots of varieties (her personal favorite is the Gentle Exfoliating Bar because it’s both gentle and effective). Another longtime fan happens to be Kelly Ripa , who has been using it for over two decades. “Even if I’m staying in the most luxurious hotel that gives you all the fancy soaps and shampoos, I bring my own bar of Dove soap,” she says. “It just sets my mind right. It’s the best.”

Best moisturizing bar soap

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser Bar

Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides | Fragrance free | 4.5 oz. (approx. $1.40/oz.)

CeraVe, the maker of our favorite dry-skin products , has this cleansing bar soap that’s filled with moisturizing, restorative ingredients. It works for most skin types, but Dr. Debra Jaliman recommends it for dry, sensitive skin since it’s gentle and “extremely hydrating.” She specifically calls out the glycerin and the added ceramides. It’s also fragrance free, so you won’t have to worry about possible irritants.

Best bar soap for sensitive skin

Unscented Basis Sensitive Skin Bar Soap

Glycerin and petrolatum, aloe vera, chamomile | Fragrance free | 4 oz. (approx. $0.57/oz.)

While the aforementioned CeraVe bar soap likely won’t irritate normal skin, Basis has some added ingredients that may help with extra-sensitive skin. (In fact, it’s so gentle it was recommended as a mild bar soap for preventing and treating bacterial vaginosis .) Jaliman notes that it contains aloe vera, which is anti-inflammatory, and chamomile, which is soothing.

Best bar soap for acne

Panoxyl Bar Soap with 10% Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide | Fragrance free | 4 oz. (approx. $1.40/oz.)

Panoxyl first came on our radar when Strategist beauty columnist Rio Viera-Newton wrote that its face wash was so effective that it cleared up cystic acne. The brand also makes a bar soap, which King recommends for anyone struggling with body acne. She says its formula “helps kill bacteria that contribute to acne while also supporting the skin barrier.” One note: Because it does have a higher percentage of benzoyl peroxide to fight off acne, you probably won’t want to use it as an everyday cleanser. Instead, reach for it whenever you have a breakout.

Best exfoliating soap

Soft Services Buffing Bar Microcrystal Exfoliant

Sodium palmate, magnesium oxide, glycerin, shea butter | Fragrance free | 4 oz. (approx. $3.50/oz.)

Alice Lin Glover, a co-founder of skin-care brand EADEM , uses Soft Services’ exfoliating soap bar a few times a week to “slough away any dead skin,” leaving her “supersmooth from the neck down.” The brand also sent me the Buffing Bar to test out earlier this year. As someone who has struggled with keratosis pilaris , I can firmly say it’s one of the best body exfoliators I’ve tried. After about three weeks of using the soap two to three times a week, I found the bumps on my legs significantly less noticeable.

Best gentle exfoliating soap

Kitsch Sugar Exfoliating Body Scrub Bar

Sugar, glycerin, coconut oil, walnut shell | Coconut and vanilla | 3.92 oz. (approx. $2.90/oz.)

If you’re after an exfoliating soap that’s gentler on the skin, Tower 28 founder Amy Liu recommends Kitsch’s body scrub bar, her go-to during the summer when she tends to show more skin. “The sugar and walnuts act as a super-gentle natural exfoliant, while the coconut oil gives my skin that extra moisture I need,” Lui says. Plus, the body bar has a nice coconut-and-vanilla scent that “smells like a dream.”

Best vegan bar soap

Nopalera Planta Futura Cactus Soap

Rice-bran oil, coconut oil, shea butter, other plant oils | Lemongrass | 4 oz. (approx. $3.50/oz.)

The two exfoliating bar soaps on our list are vegan, but if you’re looking for other vegan bar-soap options, we’ve included them here. To start, Ranavat founder Michelle Ranavat recommends Nopalera’s handmade soaps. “The soap has a fresh lemongrass scent and leaves my skin feeling super-nourished thanks to moisturizing ingredients like shea and cocoa butter,” she says, adding that its bright-green shade “gives my bathroom a little pop of color.” Also worth noting: The soap is palm-oil free, making it a more sustainable choice.

Best unscented vegan bar soap

Alder New York Cleansing Body Bar

Sea kelp, jojoba, glycolic acid | Fragrance free | 3.5 oz. (approx. $3.71/oz.)

Alder New York also makes a palm-oil-free vegan soap. However, its Cleansing Body Bar is unscented, making it a good option if you have sensitive skin (or a sensitive nose). The brand sent me one to try out for myself, and it left my skin feeling clean and hydrated. It contains one percent glycolic acid, so it lightly exfoliated my skin without irritating my eczema and was gentle enough for everyday use.

Best less expensive vegan bar soap

Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Bar Soap, Rose

Coconut oil, palm oil, jojoba oil | Rose | 5 oz. (approx. $1.16/oz.)

The previous two vegan bar soaps are on the pricier side, so we found a cheaper alternative from our archives. When we spoke to nutritionist Daphne Javitch about the things she can’t live without, she told us her favorite soap is from Dr. Bronner’s. The brand’s sustainable practices and cool packaging make it the “Patagonia of soap,” she said, adding that rose is her go-to scent for a shower. “Everyone loves the Dr. Bronner’s liquid, and I love it too, but I really love the bar soap,” she said. “I somehow find it less drying. Also with bar soap, so little goes a long way.”

10 of the Best Hand Soaps for Travelers

Whether you’re off on a city break or embarking on a month-long trek, a good hand soap should be an essential piece of your travel kit.

best travel bar soaps

(Photo: Amazon.com)

From bars to gels and from beeswax to glycerine, hand soaps come in more shapes and sizes than ever. But if you’re travelling, your soap requirements will be more specific than a bog-standard bathroom soap. The best hand travel soaps combine high-quality ingredients, antibacterial properties, convenient size and a great smell. They should last at least the duration of your trip too. Based on these criteria, we’ve selected ten of our favourite hand soaps for travellers.

Aesop’s Resurrection rinse-free handwash

Leave it to Aesop to produce the perfect, pocket-sized product for keeping hands clean when water isn’t readily available. Rinse-free and alcohol-based, this hand wash effectively cleanses hands and combats contagions, without drying them out. The wash is available in 500 ml or a more convenient 50 ml bottle, which can be squeezed directly onto dry hands. Unlike other alcohol-based washes, it doesn’t smell like chemicals — in fact, its citrus and herbaceous scent smells delicious. It’s sustainable and cruelty-free too.

The airport’s 3-1-1 rule allows for 3.4 ounces max per liquid item, all contained in a one-quart clear bag—and only one bag per person. Packing bar soap frees up that valuable space. If you’re still not convinced, consider these facts: You use 30% less water when you wash with bar soap instead of liquid soap. Liquid soap has 10 times the carbon footprint of bar soap because of its chemical ingredients and wasteful plastic packaging. On top of everything, bar soap generally lasts a heck of a lot longer than liquid soap. Now that you’re on the bar soap bandwagon, here are some tips for traveling with bar soap and a few of our favorites.

Key Tips for Traveling With Bar Soap

  • Storage is key when traveling with bar soap. You may think to just grab a plastic bag and throw it in, but this will become a mess after your first shower. Invest in a compact bar soap travel case, like this plastic one with a wooden rack . It’s water-sealed, so no gooey soap water will spill into your stuff.
  • Make sure to rest your soap in a dry spot while you shower, not in a puddle, as your soap will last longer and stay firmer.
  • It doesn’t hurt to take a moment to rinse out and dry your soap container before you put the soap back in and pack it up. If you’re feeling extra virtuous, dab your soap onto your used towel to dry it a bit more before returning it to the case.

Our Favorite Bar Soaps

The best all-around bar soap.

Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar

Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar

Cetaphil is one of the best skincare brands for sensitive skin. Its Gentle Cleansing Bar  can take off the day’s grime without stripping your skin of moisture. The creamy white bar is actually soap-free, as soap can often leave skin parched. Instead, Cetaphil uses stearic acid, a natural amino acid, as a cleanser. The bar’s suds rinse off easily without leaving any residue behind.

The Best Handmade Bar Soap

The yellow bird dead sea mud soap bar.

If you’re picky about what goes on your skin (no parabens, sulfates, or alcohol, please!), then start buying The Yellow Bird’s bar soaps by the boatload. The line of handmade and vegan soap starts with organic coconut, sunflower, olive, and palm oils, then add in natural ingredients like peppermint and tea tree.

Aveda Rosemary Mint Bath Bar

Imagine taking a long, luxurious bath with a warm mug of herbal tea perched by your side. Even a hurried hotel shower can bring you that level of relaxation when it involves this soap, an Aveda classic . The bar delivers instant calm: mentally, with its intoxicating scent, and physically, once its blend of oils and extracts—peppermint, lavender, rosemary—do their tension-releasing thing on your achy muscles after a long day of sightseeing. Powdered rosemary and peppermint leaf provide a bit of grit for gentle exfoliation.

Best Bar Soap for Your Face

Neutrogena Facial Cleansing Bar, Fragrence Free, 3.5 Oz

Neutrogena Original Fragrance-Free Facial Cleansing Bar

There’s a reason your dermatologist has been telling you to use Neutrogena since you were 13. The classic drugstore brand’s O.G. amber bar  (the formula hasn’t changed in decades) is hypo-allergenic and fragrance-free—so it doesn’t irritate even the most sensitive of skin. The glycerin-based bar lathers nicely and leaves skin feeling soft and supple, not inflamed or tight.

The Best Bar Soap for Men

Baxter of California Men's Exfoliating Body Bar Soap, Cedarwood and Oak Moss Essence

Baxter of California Exfoliating Body Bar Soap: Cedarwood and Oak Moss

This oversized bar  has a subtly woodsy scent and a trio of natural exfoliators (ground pumice, jojoba seeds, and olive seeds) that buffs away dead skin cells for smooth, clean, fresh-smelling skin.

The Best Bar Soap for Sensitive Skin

Herbivore Botanicals - All Natural Pink Clay Cleansing Soap Bar

Herbivore Natural Pink Clay Cleansing Soap Bar

Your Instagram feed has probably already introduced you to this beautiful pink soap . But Herbivore’s 100 percent natural and vegan bar has way more going for it than just good looks. Its white and pink French clays deeply clean by pulling out toxins, while its blend of coconut, olive, and sustainable palm oils deliver a heavy dose of hydration to the skin. This bar is made for people with dry and/or sensitive skin, and is mild enough to be used on the face.

The Best Fancy Bar Soap

FRESH Seaberry Exfoliating Soap

Fresh Seaberry Exfoliating Soap

Like Herbivore’s pink clay soap, Fresh’s Seaberry soap is no slouch on the looks front. And like the above picks, this bar has the goods to back it up. Its marquee ingredient, seaberry oil, is an antioxidant and essential fatty acid that’s high in vitamin E.  Pulverized bamboo, cranberry seeds, and orange peel work together to slough off dead, dull skin cells.

Travel & Leisure / Kristin Kempa

Anyone who’s adventure-bound — whether headed on a weekend camping excursion or a month-long beach stay — will need to make smart and strategic packing decisions, especially when it comes to toiletries. The best travel toiletries are portable, multi-functioning, and convenient, to help you maintain an effective grooming routine with fewer, smaller items than what you’re used to using at home.

From compact skincare products to versatile hygiene essentials, we’ve culled the best travel toiletries in every category. And, keeping the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for liquids in your carry-on luggage in mind, we’ve swapped some traditionally liquid items for solid alternatives to make packing even easier.

Best Face Wash

Evolvetogether face wash.

Evolvetogether

It’s lightweight, convenient, and sustainable.

It may not be as effective at removing makeup as other solutions.

Whether you’re trying to cut down on liquid toiletries for your carry-on luggage or you’re just trying to avoid potential spills in your bag, non-liquid products are very convenient for travel. This tried-and-true powder face wash comes in 100 percent biodegradable individual-use packets, so it’s easy to pack the exact amount you need for your trip.

Plus, they’re slimmer and more lightweight than even a miniature bottle of liquid. The water-activated unscented face wash turns into a foam with an ultra-fine sandy texture that cleanses, exfoliates, and moisturizes your skin.

The Details: 30 packets, 2 x 3.5 inches each

Best Face Moisturizer

Elizabeth arden eight hour cream.

It delivers long-lasting hydration in a travel-friendly tube.

Some skin types may be sensitive to salicylic acid.

Between the dry air in plane cabins and climate changes in a new environment, traveling can be taxing on your skin. This small but mighty tube of petroleum-based face cream delivers eight hours of hydration to help keep your skin soothed, dewy, and moisturized. Meanwhile, it’s formulated with vitamin E to repair damage caused to the skin barrier and salicylic acid to promote gentle cell turnover for healthier, smoother-looking skin. A bonus: this purse-friendly product doubles as a balm for cracked and chapped lips.

The Details: 1.7 ounces

Best Lotion

La roche-posay lipikar ap+m triple repair body cream.

The multi-tasking formula eliminates the need for multiple creams.

Be sure to layer SPF on top.

When you travel, multi-tasking products are your best friend as they allow you to lug fewer items overall. That’s why we love this prebiotic moisturizer, which can be used on your body, hands, and face. It’s packed with a combination of shea butter, glycerin, and niacinamide to replenish lost moisture and soothe dry skin. The non-greasy, non-sticky formula is non-comedogenic and safe for sensitive skin.

The Details: 2.5, 6.8, or 13.52 ounces

Best Body Wash

Glossier milky jelly cleansing bar.

It won’t count against the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for carry-ons.

It’s pricey.

Another convenient multi-tasker, this nourishing cleansing bar can be used both on your body and face. And feel free to toss this ergonomically-designed soap bar in your carry-on luggage since it won’t count against the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. The fragrance-free vegan cleanser is safe to use on sensitive skin, and it’ll leave your epidermis feeling hydrated and never stripped. It uses chamomile extract to help balance and even your complexion.

The Details: 3.85 ounces

Best Face Sunscreen

Summer fridays shadedrops spf 30 mineral milk sunscreen.

It’s enriched with vitamins, antioxidants, and soothing chamomile.

If you’re prone to sunburns, you may prefer a higher SPF value.

Whether you’re headed beachside or hitting the ski slopes, dermatologists agree it’s imperative to protect your skin from the sun with SPF 30 or higher whenever you’re spending time outdoors. This sunscreen is formulated like a lightweight serum, so it has none of that greasy, sticky feeling of traditional sunscreen, nor will it leave a white cast on your skin. It’s formulated with zinc oxide (which is safe for sensitive skin), smoothing and plumping squalane, and a vitamin E-based antioxidant complex that helps protect skin against free-radical damage.

Best Body Sunscreen

Babo botanicals sheer mineral sunscreen lotion spf 50.

It has a comfortable, lightweight formula.

There is a faint mineral smell.

When we tested 20 different travel-sized sunscreens , this nourishing, non-greasy SPF 50 formula stood out above the rest. We particularly loved the lightweight, liquid formula, which felt more like a lotion than a sunscreen and was not as heavy or sticky as old-school sunblock tends to be.

Plus, we were able to get plenty of use out of just a small dollop of the zinc oxide-based product, making the 3-ounce a better value for the price. It offers 80 minutes of water-resistance, so it’s a great pick for beach or pool trips. Plant-based ingredients including shea butter help moisturize and soothe skin.

The Details: 3 ounces

Best Shampoo

J.r. liggett's all-natural shampoo bar.

The long-lasting bar is equal to approximately 24 ounces of liquid shampoo.

The rose, lavender, and spearmint scent may not be for everyone.

Not only are shampoo bars more environmentally friendly (due to lack of plastic packaging) and more cost-effective (since you typically get more washes out of a bar than a bottle) than their liquid counterparts, but they’re also a mess-free, TSA-friendly option for travel.

We especially love this all-natural pick because it can also be used as a body soap, a lubricant for shaving, or for hand washing clothing items such as socks and underwear. The 100 percent vegetable oil formulation doesn’t strip the natural oils from your hair and naturally conditions it, so many people find they don’t need to use an additional conditioner after shampooing (and can therefore pack one less item).

The Details: 3.5 ounces

Best Conditioner

Pureology hydrate conditioner.

It softens and moisturizes hair while controlling frizz.

It's expensive.

When subjecting your hair to new environments while traveling, it can easily get dried out. This creamy and luxurious conditioner deeply softens and nourishes stressed hair and works to restore moisture. It’s formulated with moisturizing jojoba, health-promoting green tea, and sage, which supports hair follicles. Just a small amount of this color-safe conditioner goes a long way, making it an effective choice for travel (and it helps to balance out the hefty price tag).

The Details: 1.7, 9, and 33.8 ounces

Best Hair Serum

Christophe robin regenerating serum.

This all-in-one hair serum hydrates dry hair and protects against heat damage.

Be sure to travel with the lid so the press pump doesn't get bumped accidentally.

This regenerating serum is the only hair care item you'll need to pack in your toiletry bag (besides shampoo and conditioner, of course). It's designed to hydrate and replenish dry hair while acting as a heat protectant for up to 440 degrees Fahrenheit. The main ingredients all have specific purposes, too, including strengthening prickly pear seed oil, nourishing tucuma butter, and castor oil to provide a healthy shine that won't leave your hair looking or feeling greasy. You only need to use a small amount so the tiny bottle takes up very little room and lasts a long time.

Best Hair Brush

Putysuun travel comb brush combo.

This compact item includes two styling tools in one.

It may feel a bit flimsy.

A hair brush can be a tricky item to pack due to its awkward shape and bristles, which can get caught on and damage vulnerable items such as knit sweaters. This combination tool includes a hair brush and a fine toothed comb in one, so you can address all your hair styling needs with a single item. The best part is that it folds up into a compact tool that won’t risk snagging other items in your luggage. When folded, it becomes a pocket-friendly size that’s easy to stash.

Best Hairspray

Sexyhair spray & play volumizing hairspray.

It protects hairstyles against humidity.

It can make your hair feel a little crunchy.

When you’re traveling, it’s impractical to pack various hairsprays, gels, and styling creams for a variety of hairstyles. Instead, rely on a single product which has numerous uses. This small but mighty hairspray has plenty of hold to keep your tresses securely in place no matter your activity.

The volumizing spray provides fullness, lift, hold, and shine, and it’s suitable for use on all hair types. If you’re headed to a hot or humid location, rest assured that the product’s humidity protection will help keep your strands from frizzing for up to 72 hours.

The Details: 1.5, 10, or 16 ounces

Best Hand Sanitizer

Touchland power mist hand sanitizer.

It’s formulated with moisturizing aloe vera.

The scents are strong.

Whether you’re boarding a long-haul flight or trekking through terrain where you won’t encounter a sink for quite a while, hand sanitizer will help keep your hands clean. This flat container is extra convenient because it slides nicely into a pant or purse pocket — or you can clip it to a key ring or lanyard. The aloe vera-based formula is moisturizing, and each bottle contains 500 sprays. Choose from delicious scents like lemon-lime spritz, frosted mint, and citrus grove.

The Details: 1 ounce

Best Travel Razor

Gillette venus comfortglide white tea blades.

Courtesy of Amazon

It comes with a travel case for safe packing.

The short handle may be tougher to maneuver than a larger one.

With a mini handle and a nifty travel case, this razor is easy and safe to toss in your toiletry bag and won’t take up too much space. The pivoting head gets into tough-to-reach areas for a smooth, close shave. The three-blade razor is surrounded by water-activated gel bars that release a rich body butter lather, guarding your skin against nicks, cuts, and irritation as you shave — and eliminating the need for an additional shaving cream.

Best Mini Deodorant

Lume whole body deodorant.

It can also be used on your feet, thighs, and anywhere else you sweat.

The roll up mechanism can stick and become defective.

When you’re traveling, it’s helpful to pack multi-functioning products that allow you to tote fewer items overall. This full-body antiperspirant helps keep your pits, feet, and any other area where you tend to sweat feeling and smelling fresh for up to 72 hours. Powerful yet gentle, the aluminum-, paraben-, and baking soda-free formula is safe for sensitive skin.

The Details: 2.2 ounces

Best Travel First Aid Kit

Protect life small first aid kit.

It helps ease the stress of mini emergencies.

 It doesn’t include pain medication.

It’s always a good idea to carry first aid essentials in case of small emergencies like scrapes or splinters. Don’t let the small size of this health kit fool you: it contains 100 pieces, including numerous bandages, gauze pads, an emergency blanket, a CPR mask, tweezers, a tape roll, and more. Pack the 7.5 x 5.2 x 1.5-inch container in your backpack or purse to address minor injuries on the go without having to stop at the drugstore.

Best Travel Toiletry Containers

Liquisnugs premium leak-proof silicone travel bottles.

The TSA-approved bottles come in two different sizes.

You may need to purchase multiple sets to accommodate all your travel liquids.

Some of your favorite toiletries may not be available in travel-friendly sizes. That’s where these nifty refillable containers come in. Available in 2- and 3-ounce sizes (use the larger containers for liquids you use more frequently), the silicone bottles are super simple to fill with your lotions, body washes, shampoos, and more thanks to a larger opening at the top. In our testing , each individual bottle held up well and there wasn’t any spillage or damage after we tossed, turned, and dropped them in our simulations.

The Details: 2 and 3 ounces

Best Toothbrush

Kulusion dental travel kit.

It holds your toothpaste, too.

It’ll count as a liquid if you fill it with toothpaste.

Here’s another useful tool that can replace multiple items. This travel-sized toothbrush comes with a built-in, refillable toothpaste container, which easily releases your preferred toothpaste with the touch of a button. When shut, the contraption keeps the soft toothbrush head clean and protected.

Best Bug Spray

Off family care insect repellent ii with picaridin.

It doesn’t have any off-putting chemical smells.

It doesn’t come in a container larger than 4 ounces.

When T+L put 16 different bug sprays to the test , this OFF! pick rose to the top of our list. What we love: the highly effective 5 percent picaridin formula has a very light scent and doesn't feel sticky at all, you may even forget you have it on. Plus, the non-leak bottle is easy to use and it disperses a fine, even mist onto skin. The 2.5-ounce size can be tossed in your carry-on luggage or it can fit in your pocket for day trips.

The Details: 2.5 and 4 ounces

Best Dry Shampoo

Living proof perfect hair day dry shampoo.

Your hair will smell fresh and clean in between washes.

It’s not cheap.

The less time you spend shampooing your hair on vacation, the more time you’ll get back to enjoy your trip. On days between hair washes, you can use a dry shampoo to freshen up your tresses and say goodbye to greasy strands. Living Proof’s cult favorite version goes a step further by actually cleansing your hair, so it looks, feels, and is clean. The fragrance is nice and not overtly floral or chemical.

The Details: 1.8, 5.5, or 9.5 ounces

Tips for Buying Travel Toiletries

Know which items you truly need.

When you pack for a trip, know you won’t necessarily need to have all the comforts of home with you. Prioritize your daily essentials including toothpaste, soap, and deodorant. Consider which items you’ll realistically use, and which ones you can do without (for instance, you may want hairspray for a trip to Paris but not for a camping excursion). If you’re staying at a hotel, think about items you may not be picky about (such as shampoo and body wash) that may be provided by the facility free of charge.

Invest in reusable containers

You may find miniature versions of your favorite products adorable to look at, but they’re not the most sustainable or cost-effective option. Plus, your favorite brands may not even have travel-size picks available. Consider investing in reusable containers in TSA-friendly sizes. That way, you can fill them with the full-sized toiletries you already buy and you can take just as much as you need for the length of your trip.

Use a clear, ziplock bag to store your liquids and prevent leaks. This also makes it easier to see what you have and comply with airport security regulations. Try to stock up on multi-tasking products (for instance, a lotion that can be used both on your face and body) so you’ll have to pack fewer items. Use reusable travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces or less for any larger items that you want to pack in a carry-on.

Pay attention to TSA travel restrictions and make sure all your carry-on items comply with the official 3-1-1 liquids rule , which states that you can bring containers equal to or smaller than 3.4 ounces that fit in a single quart-size resealable bag. When possible, try subbing in solid alternatives to liquid toiletries (for example, a bar of soap over a liquid body wash), which are not subject to liquid restrictions and take up less space.

The Best Travel Soap Case, Dish, Bag or Container

Last Updated on May 22, 2020

Nobody wants mushy, gunky soap getting all over their clothes.

But a bar of soap is often the best cleanser to pack when traveling.

The solution is a travel soap case or bag. They’re perfect for traveling and you can also use them to take a bar of soap to the gym or sports club, but they are not all created equally.

We review a lot of travel gear at TravelingLight.com and feel that the soap case is often an undervalued travel accessory.

This post has a look at what’s on offer and picks out what we think is the best product.

At A Glance: The Best Travel Soap Case

  • #1 Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Bag – A breathable yet water repellent bag to pack your soap in.
  • #2 Carry-Dri Vented Travel Soap Case – A vented plastic soap case that lets your soap dry without leaking water on your clothes.
  • #3 Kiasona Travel Soap Case Box – A secure case that won’t open unexpectedly.
  • #4 Puting Portable Soap Saver – An economical multipack.

Packing A Bar of Soap vs Body Wash or Shower Gel

What you use at home comes down to personal preference.

But when you are traveling there is a compelling reason to pack soap in a soap holder rather than body wash or shower gel.

Body wash is a liquid and subject to the TSA liquids rule meaning you can only pack travel-size body wash bottles in your carry on luggage.

A bar of soap is solid and not subject to the liquids rule. So you don’t need to put a solid soap bar in your quart-sized baggie when going through the TSA security checkpoint.

You can pack as many soap bar cases as you want in your luggage, it’s even possible to get shampoo bars that work just as well as their liquid counterparts. And a bar of laundry soap allows you to wash your underwear in the hotel sink so you don’t need to pack as many clothes.

By switching liquids for solids you can make packing carry on luggage a lot easier.

Also, a bar of soap lasts a lot longer than body wash. I’ll be lucky is a travel-size bottle of shower gel will last me 2 showers but a bar of soap can last for weeks.

All this means that soap is a great option to pack when traveling, but you do need a travel soap dish or at the very least a ziplock bag to stop your clothes from getting wet from the soap bar.

What Makes A Good Travel Soap Dish?

It might seem like a simple product but there are still some things that a travel soap case needs to do well.

A good travel soap case:

  • Protects Your Soap Bar – It’s important to let soap dry after use. If a bar of soap stays wet too long or it goes all soft and mushy.
  • Doesn’t leak! – You have a quick shower and then immediately pack to get ready to check out your accommodation. Your soap bar is still going to be wet and you’d better hope your travel soap case doesn’t leak or you’ll get gunk all over your suitcase.
  • Is the Right Size – Your soap container needs to be able to fit your soap bars. Make sure your soap holder is the right dimensions to hold the bar of soap that you want to pack but not be too large that it takes up space in your bag.
  • Is Not Too Heavy – We’re all about traveling light here so we don’t want a soap case that’s going to add unnecessary weight to our case.

If you don’t have a soap dish for travel you could always use a plastic ziplock bag for a soap bag. The problem with that is that the soap gets all soggy and it becomes very messy fast.

The following travel soap cases are all available on Amazon if you buy we receive a small commission but it doesn’t affect the price that you pay.

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Bag

best travel bar soaps

The Matador soap bag is made with water-repellent material. This means that any splashes don’t penetrate the bag.

The fabric is also breathable so if your soap bar is damp when you put it in the bag it will be dry next time you take it out.

Frequent travelers love this travel soap case. It’s very useful when packing.

  • The design means that the bag stops the gunk from getting on your clothes but allows the soap bar to dry
  • Not easy to get the soap in and out of the bag. Since it’s not a soap case it doesn’t function as a soap dish or a soap holder while you are in the shower.

Carry-Dri Vented Travel Soap Case

best travel bar soaps

The Carry-Dri makes some bold claims. A plastic soap case that doesn’t leak but also has vents? Surely that’s not possible.

But yet it seems like they’ve pulled it off. Many people love this soap dish for travel precisely because it’s vented and stops their soap bar from getting soggy but doesn’t leak water drips into your clothes.

If you’ve just recently had a shower it might be an idea to pack this in an outer pocket of your bag just in case. That way any drips that did escape the container would evaporate quickly.

  • It’s vented so your bar of soap can dry off
  • Water won’t spill on your clothes
  • It will still get messy inside the case and you’ll need to wash it every now and then
  • The case is significantly larger than the soap bar it holds

Carry-Dri made this video that shows their product.

Kiasona Travel Soap Case Box

best travel bar soaps

The Kiasona is a hard plastic soap box that fits a normal-sized soap bar.

The included band gives extra security that the case won’t open accidently but can be a little tight to get on and off.

Inside the case, there is a sponge that is designed to wick away moisture from the soap bar so that it retains its shape.

  • Airtight and doesn’t leak
  • Despite the sponge, the soap bar can still degrade and become a bit soggy

PUTING Portable Soap Saver

best travel bar soaps

The Puting brand of soap dishes is a more affordable option. You can get a pack of 4 soap dishes from the same price that other sellers charge for 1 dish.

That makes it a great option if you are taking more than 1 bar of soap on your trip, for example, a shampoo bar or a laundry bar.

It’s also economical if your traveling partner needs a soap case too.

  • Economical multipack
  • They don’t close airtight (although some people might view this as a pro)

Final Thoughts

The best travel soap case is a thing of personal preference. There is some innovation but most products are relatively similar. The ones we’ve looked at in this post give a fair representation of what’s on offer.

The Best Solid Toiletries For Travel

This list covers some of our top solid toiletries for liquid-free carry on travel. The best travel size toiletries, without the liquid mess.

The Best Solid Toiletries For Travel

The Best Travel Size Toiletries. Without The Mess.

Looking for a method to stop overpacking your carry-on liquid allowance? Or, perhaps you want to make your toiletries last longer or be more eco-groovy. Either way, look no further! Solid toiletries are a great way to eliminate the stress of separating and measuring your liquids while also being sustainable and looking after the environment at the same time. Sounds pretty practical right? Yeah, we think so too.

We'll be taking you through some different types of solid toiletries that you can use for liquid-free (or mostly liquid-free) travel. And while we think these solid toiletries are great for one-bag travel, you're preferences may differ. Don't worry. This list is more of a guideline—you do you.

So, let's jump right in.

Other Alternatives

We really dig the solid toiletries, but maybe they’re not your style. If that’s the case, there’s plenty of options out there that could work for you.

Go Toiletry Free Okay, don’t go completely toiletry free. Although a thorough baby wipe bath can keep you clean(ish) while on the go, it’s not a great long-term solution. But you can buy everything you need when you get to your destination. Now, you may not find the exact products you’re looking for—especially if you’re traveling to more remote areas—so keep that in mind if you’re not the gambling type. Maybe do some research first. That way you can pack just those hard-to-find items.

Make Your Own For all you DIY or home-baking folks out there, homemade toiletry recipes are available all over the internet. Some made with ingredients you probably already have. While we haven’t tested these recipes ourselves, if you’re resourceful and have time to experiment, this could be your kind of thing.

Pack It All Up

So, there we have it, some of our favorite solid toiletries to help you travel stress and worry-free (at least when it comes to your Dopp kit). And while we think these solid toiletries are great for one-bag travel, you’re preferences may differ. Don’t worry. Discover what works for you and use these tips to minimize your liquid allowance and maximize your travel experience!

Why Trust Byrdie?

Byrdie / Amelia Manley

While we wouldn't say bar soap is at the forefront of the beauty industry, the classic skincare staple undoubtedly paved the way for cleansing as we know it. And today's iterations aren't just for washing your hands and lathering up in the shower. Believe it or not, there are lots of incredible cleansing bars formulated specifically for washing your face.

We asked licensed esthetician Dana Murray of Babe + Beauty for insight. "Bar soaps for the face are tricky because they are usually alkaline in pH (around 7 to 8), which is a bit high for the skin," she tells Byrdie. However, she offered some recommendations and tips on what to look for. As with any cleanser, pay attention to the actives (key ingredients), especially if you have a sensitive complexion or a particular skin concern.

Whether you're tickled by the nostalgia of bar soap, are a skincare minimalist, or are trying to buy products with less wasteful packaging, there's an option out there for you. To help you narrow down your choices, we did our due diligence and explored the most popular bar soaps on the market. Then, we cross-referenced our picks with those recommended to us by several of our trusted experts. The result: A curated list of soap bars specifically intended for your face.

Meet the Expert

  • Dana Murray of Babe + Beauty is a licensed esthetician and beauty blogger. Dana became a licensed esthetician in 2004 and has worked at hotel spas on the Las Vegas Strip for over a decade, performing an estimated 10k+ facials. She became director of corporate education for a San Diego-based beauty brand in 2016 and started working as a beauty product developer in 2018.
  • Nina Zilka is the co-founder and CEO of  Alder New York , a queer- and woman-owned independent skincare line.

What to Look for in Bar Soap

Ingredients.

Aside from ingredients that will, obviously, wash your face, Zilka recommends seeking out soap bars that have hydrating ingredients. The Nubian Heritage soap bar, for example, contains shea butter, which can keep the skin feeling soft and supple. If you're looking to eradicate breakouts, check out the Good Molecules Clarify & Cleanse Bar ; it's loaded with salicylic acid and tea tree oil to clear existing imperfections and prevent new ones from popping up.

Avoid All-Purpose

You should avoid all-purpose bar soaps, says Zilka, as they can be too harsh or dry on the skin. Instead, look for formulas that are intended for use on the face. All of the bar soaps on this list are safe to use on the face.

Care Instructions

Keep an eye out for each product's care instructions. Since bar soaps can harbor bacteria when not cared for properly, you'll want to make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure you get the most out of your bar.

To use bar soap explains Zilka, get the bar wet and rub it between your hands to get a soapy lather. After that, you can either run your soapy hands or the bar directly onto your face or body—whatever you prefer. There’s no need to use a loofah or washcloth, she says.

Bar soap does expire, says Zilka. But, if stored correctly, it can last for years.

Store it in a cool, dry place until you're ready to use it, says Zilka. Once you’re using it, she explains, make sure to store it in a soap dish that elevates it from residual water.

10 Best Travel Soap Cases: Traveler's Top Picks!

10 Best Travel Soap Cases: Traveler's Top Picks!

There's nothing worse than opening your luggage to find soapy dampness all over your clothes or electronics! Luckily, I discovered travel soap cases, which have really come a long way since their invention. Learn about some of my favourite picks...

best travel bar soaps

Today, soap is on almost every traveler's  packing list . Let's be real: even if you stay at a hotel that provides shampoo and soap, the free stuff is usually not that great.

I always like to take a favorite soap and shampoo bar with me for the start of a longer trip. Then I usually buy new ones locally to explore new scents. Why? I like that soaps and shampoo bars aren't as bulky as their liquid counterparts.

The only issue is storing them properly. You don't want wet soap bars in your luggage, especially not if you also have books and electronics in your backpack or suitcase. While a plastic bag would do the job, it wouldn't do it well.

Enter the travel soap case: The perfect solution to storing soap when traveling. In this article, I'll introduce you to 10 of the best travel soap cases and give you some helpful info.

How Do You Store Soap When Traveling?

I already mentioned that a mere plastic bag or wrap isn't the solution. So, what is it? There are two common ways to store soap while on the road.

Travel Soap Cases

The travel soap case, also called a travel soap container or box, is usually square, oval, or round. It can be made from plastic, metal, and other materials like bamboo. Plastic-free options are becoming more popular these days.

A travel soap case is made from a lower and upper half. The lower half sometimes has a separate soap dish in it. The two halves seal the case when closed so that no water escapes.

Travel Soap Bags

A good travel soap bag is a suitable alternative if you have nothing heavy in your luggage. A soap bag isn't as sturdy as a soap case, so your soap can easily be squashed, especially if it's still wet.

Some soap bags are cool though. I like  Travel Buddy's travel soap bag . It's awesome if you carry a  backpack  because you can attach it to the outside. This solves the problem of soap leaking inside your bag!

When Was the Travel Soap Case Invented?

Soap has existed for over 4,000 years, and soap dishes for at least 1,400 years. Soap containers from the 18th century already had important features for modern soap cases. They could be beautiful but weren't exactly made for traveling light.

It seems impossible to pinpoint the first-ever travel soap case. But it's safe to say plastic travel soap containers as we know them today haven't been around earlier than the 20th century.

What to Keep In Mind When Buying Travel Soap Containers

There are three important things to consider when choosing a suitable travel soap container.

3. Material

You don't want something flimsy. It must be strong enough not to be squashed by everything else in your pack.

Soaps can come in all sorts of shapes, usually round or square. Ensure you buy a container that suits the soap you use.

Buy a case that is just big enough to fit your soap. If the soap container is too big, your soap will move around too much, making the inside messy.

And if it's too small, you'll have a problem closing the container once the soap is in it!

The 13 Best Bar Soaps to Lather Up With During Your Next Shower

By Marci Robin , Audrey Noble , and Angela Trakoshis

bar soaps on orange and purple background

Soap : For many of us, it falls under the umbrella of scarcely considered personal-care products, along with, say, floss. While body washes, scrubs, and shower oils can deliver a cleansing experience that's nothing short of luscious, there's something about good ol' bar soap that delivers a clean feeling that's second to none. On the other hand, it's that same clean feeling that can send people running for their hydrating shower oils — after all, it's no fun to strip your skin and leave it tight, itchy, or dry.

That said, for every bar soap that leaves skin feeling a little too squeaky-clean, there are just as many that deliver that coveted clean and improve the look and feel of skin. On a completely separate — yet equally as important — note, bar soap produces much less waste than a plastic bottle.

We did some scrubbing to find the best bars to lather up with during your next shower. Consider making room on your soap dish for one of these picks.

The SheaMoisture African Black Soap is so gentle, in fact, that it can even be used to calm eczema-prone skin.

It’s worth noting that you can use multiple strips at once, and it’s actually recommended to use two strips for medium-large loads, or just clothes that are very dirty.

The detergent strips work best when used in a washing machine, so they’re certainly not the perfect option for hand washing dirty clothes. However, they will dissolve completely in hot or cold water, so you could try to use them in the sink and see how well they perform when used for handwashing.

Also, it’s worth noting that the detergent strips are just the best value for money you will find. It’s a little less than $10 for a box of 48 strips, which comes down to just some 20 cents per load.

  • Great value for money
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Plant-based composition
  • Clumping issues

Sea to Summit Wilderness Wash

Sea To Summit Citronella Wilderness Wash (3 Ounce/ 89ml)

If you’re looking for travel laundry detergent that’s great for camping, the Sea to Summit wash is one of the best options. It’s a thick and concentrated formula that’s both paraben-free and biodegradable. The laundry soap is very gentle on your hands and you can get away without using any gloves when doing laundry.

It also has a fresh citrusy smell, and it helps keep the bugs away from you outdoors. It’s easily one of the best travel laundry detergents, but it’s also one of the priciest.

The 3-ounce bottle has limited availability and it sometimes costs more than the 8-ounce bottle, which makes no sense. It’s better to just buy the bigger bottle and transfer the soap to a smaller container so you’re not paying $1 per load.

  • Great for camping
  • Repels bugs
  • Biodegradable and paraben-free
  • Not the most portable option
  • Weight: 8.5 oz

Finzy Laundry Soap Sheets

Finzy® Laundry Soap Sheets, Washer Sheets for Travel Laundry, 32 loads, Portable Individual Packages, More Efficient and Convenient than Liquid, Pods, or Pacs - Travel & Eco Friendly

The Finzy Laundry Soap sheets are perfect if you’re looking for value for money. A pack of these includes 32 detergent sheets, which is enough to do 32 loads of laundry. And the box costs only some $9, so the total cost per load is just a little under $0.3.

Also, it’s important to note that one sheet is enough to do a classic load of laundry that you would be doing at home. If you’re washing a smaller load or just a couple of items, you can cut the detergent sheets into halves and even quarters.

They’re suitable for both washing machines and hand washing, but it’s worth noting that you won’t need an entire sheet to hand wash some laundry in the sink. A quarter of a sheet should be enough, just make sure to let it dissolve entirely before you add any laundry to the sink.

Additionally, you should know that these detergent sheets are phosphate-free and biodegradable, so they’re completely safe for use outdoors.

  • Suitable for machine and hand washing
  • Can be cut into pieces for smaller loads
  • Very strong scent
  • Weight: 3.2 oz
  • Laundry Loads: 32

The Laundress Wash And Stain Bar

The Laundress Wash and Stain Bar is an interesting solution for travel laundry detergent. It’s a soap bar that functions as a magic eraser – it’s made to easily remove spots and stains from clothes, carpets, and upholstery.

This works even with oil-based stains, so you can easily get out makeup, pit stains, and even cooking grease out of your clothes. It’s also perfect for those moments when you just need to get a stain out, plus it doubles as a classic laundry soap.

Also, it’s entirely biodegradable because it’s made from plant-based ingredients, so it’s perfectly safe for your hands and eco-friendly. The only downside is that it’s a soap bar, so it’s not quite as convenient as liquid soap and you’ll need to find better packaging for it. But other than that, it’s certainly one of the best laundry soaps for travel you can get your hands on.

  • Plant-based ingredients
  • Great for spot treatment
  • Soap bars can be clunky
  • Only for hand washing
  • Weight: 2 oz

washEZE Laundry Sheets

WashEZE 3-in-1 Laundry Detergent Sheets 20 Loads Scented Liquidless Soap Sheet-Detergent, fabric softener and more -TSA Travel Approved, Dorm Life, Camping, Small Dwellings and RV Laundry Detergent

The WashEZE laundry sheets are a good option if you’re looking for something ultra-compact and portable. They’re 3-in-1 laundry sheets that include detergent, softener, and static control, plus they’re phosphate-free.

The laundry sheets are compatible with all kinds of washing machines, plus they’re suitable for handwashing. If you’re using the sheet for handwashing, just let it dissolve in the water entirely, before you add your laundry to it.

What makes these so great for travel is that there won’t be any soap accidents in your suitcase, which could happen with classic laundry soap. It’s worth noting that the box includes 20 detergent sheets for some $15, so it comes down to about $0.75 per load. That’s not too bad, considering that the strips also include fabric softener and that they’re suitable for larger loads.

  • Suitable for washers and handwashing
  • Includes detergent and fabric softener
  • Not the best for heavily soiled clothes
  • Weight: 3 oz
  • Laundry Loads: 20

Tide Sport Travel Sink Packets

Tide Liquid Travel Sink Packets, 3-Count

The Tide travel sink packets are worth considering if you prefer using liquid detergent. These are tiny (0.17 fl oz) packs of liquid laundry detergent that take up practically no space in your luggage. They’re extremely portable and excellent for those of you who are used to hand-washing your clothes when traveling.

They’re called sink packets because the amount of detergent is just enough to wash a sink full of dirty clothes, or just a laundry bag. That means that one packet should be enough to hand wash a small load of laundry, but keep in mind that you’d normally use a lot more liquid laundry detergent when washing clothes in a machine.

The downside is that these are quite pricey. It’s a little more than $1 per packet (and load), which definitely isn’t budget-friendly. On the other hand, it is Tide detergent, so at least you can be certain that it’s going to perform well and actually clean your clothes, instead of just making them smell nice.

  • Quality detergent
  • Great for washing clothes in a sink
  • Small and portable
  • One of the priciest options
  • Weight: 2.08 oz
  • Laundry Loads: 3

Lazy Coconuts Eco Laundry Detergent Strips

LAZY COCONUTS Eco Friendly, Plant Powered Laundry Detergent Strips - Fragrance Free, Unscented, Ultra Concentrated, Earth Friendly No Plastic - Lightweight and Perfect For Home, Dorms, Travel, Camping

The Lazy Coconuts Eco detergent strips are an excellent option if you want a sustainable solution for doing laundry while traveling. These are eco-friendly laundry strips in recycled packaging, and they’re suitable for hand washing and machine washing.

One strip is enough for a daily wash of a small-medium load, but you’ll need two strips for a bigger load or heavily soiled clothes. When using the strips for hand washing, you should add the strip to the water and let it dissolve before adding the clothes. Also, it’s best to let heavily soiled clothes soak for a while, to ensure you can wash them properly.

It’s also worth noting that the strips are free of plastics, paraben, and phosphates, plus they’re vegan and hypoallergenic. They’re safe for your hands and the environment, which makes them suitable for use outdoors as well.

  • Good value for money
  • Not great for very dirty/greasy clothes
  • Weight: 4.7 oz

What To Look For

Machine or hand washing.

Do you plan to wash clothes in the washer or by hand? Depending on what you usually do, you should choose the appropriate travel laundry soap.

Pods and soap sheets are the most portable option for machine washing, while plastic packets of soap are more suitable for handwashing. Laundry strips can also work for hand washing, but it’s best to cut them into smaller strips since they are made for larger loads. That way you don’t waste anything, and you get more use out of a single strip.

It’s also easier to pack laundry detergent when it’s in the form of strips because it takes up much less space in your luggage.

Indoor or Outdoor use?

Are you washing the clothes indoors, or are you doing it outdoors?

If it’s the latter and you’re going to be dumping that water outside, you should look into biodegradable soaps. They’re safe for the environment and don’t have any toxic chemicals, so you can safely dump the water anywhere, without having to look for chemical dump tanks.

They’re also a lot easier on your hands, and you don’t have to wear gloves when doing laundry. This is especially convenient for using laundry bags or doing laundry at campsites.

If you’re washing the laundry at home, you don’t have to look at the chemical composition as much. Plus you have more options at your disposal, especially if you have access to a washer.

Best Travel Laundry Soap: Our Top Picks

Not sure what kind of travel laundry soap you should get? Go with one of our top three picks, depending on how you usually do laundry while traveling.

Sea to Summit wash is one of the best travel laundry detergent options if you prefer liquid soap. It’s biodegradable and paraben-free, so it’s a great option for camping. The citrus-scented wash is also quite versatile, since it’s suitable for clothes, dishes, and even as a hair/body wash! Also, it’s available in several packaging sizes, but the largest one is the best value for money.

  • Super thick concentrated formula with the fresh scent of Citronella
  • Biodegradable and Paraben-free

If you just want a cheap solution, go with the Finzy portable detergent sheets . They’re by far the best value for money out of the bunch since the total cost comes down to less than $0.3 per load. They’re also biodegradable and phosphate-free, plus you can use them for either hand washing or machine washing.

If you mostly wash clothes by hand when traveling or camping, pick up the Laundress Wash & Stain Bar . It’s a stain remover soap bar that works for both getting out stains and just classic laundry washing, and it’s excellent value for money. It’s also allergen-free, made from plant-based ingredients, and biodegradable, so it’s safe for both your hands and the environment.

ORGANIC BEAUTY LOVER

I Tried 7 Best Natural Face Soap Bars. Here’s what I really think

If you’re looking for a super thorough guide and comparison of the best natural facial soap bars, I got you covered! I’ve extensively tested sooo many popular organic soaps over the years and there’s only small number of them that are actually good for facial skin. Plus, the ones in my carefully curated list would convert any hater into a fan! Whether you have acne, sensitive skin or rosacea skin, there’s a cleansing bar for you. Keep reading to find the best facial bar soap for your skin type, concerns and budget.

natural soap bar for face

Why I love facial soap bars

Non toxic soap bars are not only filled with clean and natural ingredients that heal skin, they’re also sooo practical, less wasteful (basically zero waste!), plastic-free and budget-friendly.

Not having to pay for fancy (and heavy) packaging makes them WAY more affordable than their $40-plus bottled counterparts.

I also find they tend to last longer than water-based face cleansers, are incredibly versatile and so convenient to bring on my travels. And if they’re good enough for my face, they naturally make excellent cleansers for hand and body!

How to find the best soap for face

Most soap bars on the market aren’t suitable for delicate facial skin! I wouldn’t want to use any old soap on my face. It needs to tick all the boxes! I want the best ingredients, the right amount of lather, a deep thorough cleansing and petal soft skin afterwards.

The best clean facial soap bars are carefully and thoughtfully formulated in a balanced manner to provide deep yet gentle cleansing and nourishment for the skin.

There’s always exceptions of course, but I generally would trust a reputable skincare brand to make a good soap for the face than any random soap brand.

First, when looking for a natural soap bar, be sure to avoid harsh surfactants, irritants and sulfates . The last thing anyone wants is one that leaves their skin feeling dry and tight (or worse, the skin barrier damaged!).

Instead, look for nourishing oils and butters in the ingredients. These will condition skin so you’re not left with that dreaded squeaky tight sensation. I love olive oil, shea butter, coconut milk and tallow in my soap bars.

Ingredients to Avoid in Soap Bars

non toxic facial soap bar

Here are the harmful ingredients you want to avoid in soap:

  • Triclosan and Triclocarban : antimicrobial pesticides that are toxic to the aquatic environment and may impact human reproductive systems.
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine : synthetic detergent and surfactant
  • Butylatedhydroxy Anisole and Butylated Hydroxytoluene : synthetic antioxidants used to extend a product’s shelf life, and are likely carcinogens, hormone disruptors and may even cause liver damage.
  • Diethanolamine : a chemical that can cause liver and kidney cancer
  • Dioxane : can adversely impact kidney, brain, and liver function.
  • Formaldehyde : a comm preservative that is a known carcinogen and linked to asthma, neurotoxicity, and developmental toxicity. It can be labeled as: quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3 diol (Bronopol).
  • Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone : chemical preservatives known to be common irritants, sensitizers, and causes of contact skin allergies.
  • Parabens (methyl-, isobutyl-, propyl- and others) : preservatives known to be endocrine (or hormone) disruptors.
  • Phthalates : known to be endocrine disruptors
  • Polyethylene Glycol (PEG compounds) : PEGs may be contaminated with measurable amounts of ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, which are both carcinogens.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS and SLES) : surfactants that can cause skin irritation or trigger allergies.
  • Synthetic Fragrance : Can contain any combination of 3,000-plus chemical ingredients, including hormone disruptors and allergens.

summer solace tallow soap bar natural and organic

Summer Solace Tallow Bar Soap (My Top Pick!)

Summer Solace’s tallow soap is my top pick and recommendation for an organic soap bar that goes way above and beyond the rest of the competition . It’s not only organic regenerative, which is the highest standard of quality in the industry, but it’s also made of tallow exclusively sourced from verified regeneratively raised cattle from Stemple Creek Ranch. Keep in mind majority of natural soaps are made mostly of palm oil.

So why tallow? Because it’s deeply nourishing, healing and sooo moisturizing! Tallow is an amazing source of vitamins and nutrients for the skin because it’s higher in omega-7, omega-9, conjugated linoleic acid, and vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12 than plant-based fats. It contains a similar fat content to human skin, making it capable of absorbing quickly and penetrating deeply.

Summer Solace soaps are a cut above the rest – they feel sooo buttery and rich, give a good lather and leave my skin feeling not only deeply cleansed but baby soft. It actually works to balance out my dryness.

I was so impressed by their selection, sourcing and quality of ingredients. They’re slow-made with certified regenerative, organic, ethically grown and hyper-local Northern California ingredients like indigenous-owned extra virgin olive oil made by the Seka Hills Tribe, heritage leaf lard, activated charcoal from Hawaiian coconut shells, sun-dried Mendocino bladderwack seaweed, E3Live super algae and even hydrosols . They offer 6 different varieties of tallow soap.

Price : $18 for 4.9 oz Best for: all skin types Other soap varieties offered: Unscented, Vetiver Grounding Soap, Third Wave Coffee Bar Soap, Rosemary and Manuka Pastured Leaf Lard Soap, Sea Change Seaweed Bar Soap, Yuzu and Sencha Toning Bar Soap with E3Live, Violet and Lemon Basil A2/A2 Milk Soap ✔ Regenerative Organic Ingredients ✔ Slow Made ✔ Palm-Free ✔ Imperfect soaps offered

blissoma natural face soap

Blissoma Oatmilk Mellow Facial Cleansing Bar

If you’re vegan, my top facial soap recommendation is Blissoma’s Oatmilk Mellow Cleansing Bar. I’ve purchased this multiple times over because I absolutely looove that it’s actually creamy (unlike most soaps) and has organic OATMILK made in-house by Blissoma!

I find that it gives me super squeaky clean skin without drying it out. Plus, it has the most soothing, gentle properties. The only potential con is that it contains titanium dioxide, which some individuals may avoid.

Many clean beauty brands use palm oil in their soaps, but Blissoma avoids this ingredient entirely. Instead, they use six naturally saponified oils of organic olive, coconut, sunflower, shea butter, pumpkin seed, castor, and cocoa butter. These oils mixed with a heaping base of oatmilk gives the bar its unique rich, creamy quality.

I can’t get enough of the scent! It’s delicate and elegant and smells of mild lavender, mint and vetiver. The calming and grounding aroma helps ease my overactive mind at night.

Price : $22 for 3.75 oz Best for: normal, sensitive and all skin types Other soap varieties offered: Pomegranate Supreme Facial Cleansing Bar ✔ Vegan ✔ Cruelty-free ✔ Palm-Free ✔ Certified Organic Ingredients

cleo coco soap bar vegan zero waste activated charcoal natural

Cleo + Coco Cleanse Bar

This is a gem of a find! I loooove how moisturizing, buttery and hydrating this bar and nobody even knows about it because Cleo + Coco is actually a deodorant brand. It gives a really strong, creamy lather and still feels oh so buttery on the skin. Like many natural soaps, it contains Sustainable Palm, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Olive Oil, Organic Shea Butter and essential oils along with extra goodness like honey and activated charcoal. It’s seriously such an amazing face soap! I find the specific formulation used makes it better than most other non-toxic cleansing bars.

Price : $16.99 for 5.5 oz Best for: all skin types Other soap varieties offered: None ✔ Cruelty-free ✔ Responsibly-sourced Palm Oil ✔ Contains Organic Ingredients

best travel bar soaps

Osmia Clay Facial Soap (Best for Sensitive Skin)

Osmia’s are a tried-and-true favorite for very sensitive skin and problematic issues like perioral dermatitis and rosacea. I finally tested their formulated facial soaps, which have been vetted by the clean beauty community for maaaany years. I recommend looking into Osmia if you suffer from serious skin issues and need a targeted skin treatment and soap in one.

Before I go into my whole experience with Osmia Skincare’s soaps, I have to mention how TINY they are. I first thought I had accidentally gotten the trial size, but nope! This is one of the most expensive soaps on the market. A few of the other ones in my list are 5 oz, so if Osmia’s soaps were the same size it would cost nearly $50!

They start off like most other soaps – responsibly-sourced palm oil. But I appreciate the wide variety of organic oils, butters and nutrient-dense ingredients like coconut milk, French pink clay and kaolin clay (or Black Australian clay and Dead Sea mud).

I find that the soap gives a very gentle lather and lasts quite a while for such a small size! It provides a soothing and gentle cleanse that doesn’t leave my skin feeling dry or tight afterwards.

Price : $24 for 2.25 oz Best for: Dry, Mature, Sensitive and Rosacea Skin Other soap varieties offered: Black Clay Facial Soap, Pumpkin Facial Soap ✔ Vegan ✔ Cruelty-free ✔ Responsibly-sourced Palm Oil ✔ Certified Organic Ingredients

ursa major soap bar morning mojo natural vegan

Ursa Major Morning Mojo Bar Soap (Best for Men!)

I find Ursa Major’s soap bar great if you have very oily skin because of how purifying and clarifying it is. It’s an invigorating and exfoliating facial soap bar perfect for morning soap users (or men!).

I find their bar gives the most excellent frothy lather but doesn’t strip the skin thanks to honey, coconut oil and shea butter. It’s also got volcanic ash to exfoliate skin but doesn’t feel coarse at all. In fact, I’m not sure it even adds much value because I can’t hardly feel it all.

Every time I use this soap the scent makes me feel like I’m waking up in the mountains. I can tell it has a very generous amount of rosemary and eucalyptus oils, because the scent is much stronger than most other soaps. I find the cooling fresh, minty immediately perks up my senses and has me feeling more alert and ready to take on the day.

Overall, I feel this is one of the best value natural soaps (that also works well for the face) on the market!

Price : $14 for 5 oz Best for : all skin types Other soap varieties offered: None ✔ Responsibly-sourced Palm Oil ✔ Some Organic Ingredients ✔ Certified Plastic Negative

yellow bird natural face soap bar vegan cruelty free

The Yellow Bird Natural Soap Bar (Budget Friendly!)

If I were on a really tight budget, I would opt for The Yellow Bird natural soaps. They tick all my boxes and come in 15 different varieties, so there’s something for everyone! The ingredients are simple, organic and pure. All their soaps have a base of organic Sustainable Palm Oil, Sunflower Oil, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil and Shea Butter and are enhanced with different essential oils and actives depending on the soap type.

I find the Yellow Bird soap bar to be rich and moisturizing and they give a decent lather. It cleans super well and isn’t harsh in any way on the skin.

Price : $9.95 for 4.5 oz Best for: all skin types Other soap varieties offered : 15 varieties ✔ Vegan ✔ Cruelty-free ✔ Responsibly-sourced Palm Oil ✔ Certified Organic Ingredients

herbivore natural facial cleansing bar

Herbivore Pink Clay Cleansing Bar Soap

Herbivore also makes a great facial cleansing bar that’s all natural and safe for delicate facial skin. It feels rich and hydrating and has a very gentle lather. Love that it’s a decent size too at 4 oz. The ingredient quality isn’t as high as my previously mentioned top picks, since none are certified organic but it’s still an effective facial soap. It’s got sunflower seed oil, safflower seed oil, palm kernel oil, olive fruit oil, French pink clay and geranium essential oil.

Price : $14 for 4 oz Best for : dry and sensitive skin Other soap varieties offered: Bamboo Cleansing Charcoal Bar Soap ✔ Vegan ✔ Cruelty-free

I used WashEZE detergent sheets and they did a GREAT job for hand washing or machine washing. Hint: cut the sheets into quarters and strips to make it easy when you’re on the road. Also like Clean People Ultra Concentrated Laundry Detergent Strips. They come in both scented and unscented. For stains, I bring along a small slice of Basin’s Fabric Stain Remover Soap.

Lucy

Thank you for this helpful post. Before reading it, I didn’t even know that laundry strips were a thing. But I got some Lazy Coconut strips for a recent trip to France. They were awesome, and helped me with sink laundry so I could pack light and travel with just a backpack and carryon.

Laura Wilson

This is incredibly helpful! With so many to choose from and never using them before I’ve had a hard time deciding. Thank you so much!

Kristi

I used the Ethique laundry bar to wash clothing in the hotel room sink on our 3-week Scandinavia trip in August. It worked great!

Victoria Barkoff

I use “eco-friendly” Kind brand unscented laundry sheets. You can easily tear off a piece for smaller washes. For stains, I slice off a piece of The Soap Works Stain-Remover Laundry Bar (from a Canadian company) and pack it in a small plastic bag.

Pat Galfano

I love my powder (citrus for easy rinse out) Forever New . Carry in a small zip lock bag and use for sink wash out. roll in towel, squeeze and hang to dry.

Lisa Anderson Spencer

I travel with the Scrubba washing bag and, typically, use the hotel shower gel or shampoo. The Earth laundry papers are good too.

Courtney

Thanks for sharing so many helpful options! I’m looking forward to trying some of the eco laundry strips on my next trip as they seem very compact and easy to adjust based on the amount of items I need to wash.

Robin Polito

These Travelon Laundry Soap Sheets were a game changer on our last few trips to Italy. So portable, not a liquid and get the job done!

Lisa Byrne

Thank you for all of the travel laundry suggestions! Going to Ireland and Germany in 2013 and these items will rally help!!

We are leaving for London THIS WEEK!!!! I purchased Breezeo. Excited to try it. Love the travel content and recommendations. Been following for years.

Cherie Persing

Thank you for your info on laundry detergent sheets. I didn’t even know that they were a thing until I logged into TFL. I have a medical condition that results in the need to do laundry often. You have made me feel confident that I can now travel again without worrying about laundry.

Cheri streicher

I have used Tide sheets and they worked wonderfully! So thin to pack and weigh next to nothing – they are a must fir any trip longer than a weekend!

zubera syeda

I usually just used shampoos provided by the hotel to do laundry. But eh pods or the sheets would dona better job. Thanks for sharing so many options for us.

Glenda Sims

I always take the Travelon Detergent sheets. Work great!

Kimberly Roper

I used the Travelon laundry sheets on our family trip to the Betheelands in June and they worked great! We all traveled with carryons only!

Roper Kimberly

For years I used the hotel shampoo to wash my clothes but on my last trip I switched to TruEarth laundry sheets. They were a game changer I cut several full size load sheet into fourths, just the right size for a sink wash. And they are eco friendly for a win win.

Susan H

For the way I travel, I like to bring powdered soap, it’s lighter weight and less messy than liquid. I usually just bring some of the Charlies laundry soap powder I use at home. I’m sensitive to fragrances so it works great for me.

Michelle Pengely

After reading this post, for Australian readers, I found an Australian brand Strip Clean that makes detergent strips that are free from phosphorus, parabens and harsh chemicals. Took them on our recent trip to The Red Centre in Australia. Great product

Julia D

I often travel with Dr. Bronner’s for washing, but I use Soak at home–& I’m eager to try sheets! So many options for my next trip.

Julie w

Dee B

I was shopping the Breezio strips last weekend and realized I already own a Fels Naptha bar that I can carve some off to take to the UK in a couple of weeks. Glad I kept reading! Thanks for all the hints! They’re spot on!

Sarah Packard

I’m bringing the Sink Suds on a cruise soon, they seem like the perfect way to wash some of my unmentionables mid-trip! 🙂

Lisa

Love the laundry sheets; a small bit is usually ample for travel sink laundry.

Sybil

The Fels-Naptha idea is brilliant! I always spill something on myself that needs a little extra cleaning power. Since I use this at home, it is always on hand to pack.

Allison Benham

My travel buddy brought the Earth Breeze laundry sheets on our trip to Italy and I loved them so much I use them at home now too!

Natalie E.Tackett

Thanks for sharing other readers’ comments and reviews of these products. Very helpful! I use The Laundress wash and stain bar when traveling. It comes as a palm sized bar of soap, but I cut it in 1/4 pieces so it’s more compact and takes up less room.

Dorca

Great article will be traveling to Italy for the first time in October and this group has been a great help fora first time traveler. Than you

Eunice

I love that you’ve included some eco-friendly options. I have a trip coming up and plan to try out the laundry sheets.

Karen

I love using Soak, but now I’m excited to try out some of these other options. I especially like the idea of the solid detergents, that don’t have to take up room in my quart bag!

Becky Collins

I brought a pack of Breezo detergent sheets on a work trip to Europe and I became everyone’s best friend! The sheet of strips made for easy sharing with my fellow travelers and they were very thankful (especially when the learned of the price for the hotel laundry service!). Bonus – my luggage smelled great from the pack itself!

Liz Walter

I love detergent sheets, and use rhem at home as well! Grove Collective has great ones that travel perfectly, for machines. For sinks, I like the Travelon ones.

Colleen Ney

I’ve been looking for this info and of course you’ve got it. Thanks!!

Ashli Foster

Great options! Way better than my usual M.O. (using shower gel or shampoo in a pinch, lol!). I think I will try a couple at home before my next trip. Thanks TFG!

Tiffany Leary

I love these tips!

I always look forward to these posts!! Either a method I didn’t know I was looking for or a reminder about a diy for an upcoming trip, thank you for helping me build a travel arsenal of info!

Julie Kuhn

After reading this post I went with the Breezeo laundry sheets. Not only were they easy to pact and took up NO space, they had a fresh scent that permeated my suitcase!

Judy Soltis

I’m beginning to plan a lifelong dream of going to the UK and I know I’m going to need to use some of these suggestions for washing my clothes.

Ellen

Funny, I have never brought laundry soap on my trips. I usually just use my bar soap. 🤔

Tabatha

I had no idea that there were so many choices either. I would love to have some samples of some of these options to try at home before our next travel date.

Susan Jensen

Thanks for all of the different choices! I had no idea there was such a thing as washer sheets, what a great invention! Timely for a trip to Europe this Fall.

Jaime Breinholt

We actually bought the Scrubba bag this year for our trip to Europe & it worked amazingly well! Saved us a ton of money & time from having to find somewhere to do our laundry. Thanks for the recommendation on travel laundry soap!

Darlene Sanchez

Wow I didn’t know there are so many laundry soap options❣️ I am going to France for a month traveling with a carryon luggage and personal item only backpack. I have been following Travel Fashion Girl website since 2016. I love all the helpful information and the links to items shared for purchase❣️

Colleen Sachs

I subscribed to the Earth Breeze laundry sheets over a year ago – no more big plastic jugs!! Stuffed several into a ziploc for 3 weeks in Ireland and tore some in half or used a whole sheet, depending on how much I sink washed at various stops. Next trip: 2 weeks in Spain in Feb – already committed my brain to using the 10 piece Essential wardrobe!!

Nancy

This was a great article that introduced me to a lot of options for sink washing that I was not aware of. I’ve used Woolite packets and Travelon sheets for years, but I’m going to give SOAK a try. The rinsing is always the worst part of hand washing, so I’m intrigued by the idea of no rinse needed. I’m going to try it at home first just to see how it works. Thanks for all the information you’ve shared through the years. It’s been so helpful when packing for a trip!

Susan T

Great options. I wish more were unscented.

Janet

Oh my gosh, too many choices. I had no idea there were this many to choose from

Goat Milk Stuff

The Best TSA & Travel-Friendly Bar Soaps and Lotions

Traveling as a family of 10 is always a bit of a challenge. In fact, when the children were little, it was quite the circus. Fortunately, we've figured out how to make it as pain-free as possible.

It involves packing lists, matching suitcases, dressing all of us in matching shirts, and lots of marching in single file with continuous head counts!

Years ago, we flew from Indiana to California to appear on the television show, The Doctors . We packed carefully and brought LOTS of soap with us to share with everyone we met on the journey.

As we went through the TSA line at the airport and had our luggage scanned, we got flagged and had to open up all our carry-on cases. The TSA agents wanted to know what all the rectangular objects were.

When we told them it was soap, they were a bit confused why we had over 50 bars of soap spread out amongst all our carry-on luggage. So we pulled out several of our Banner mini-magazines and showed them what we do.

Ten minutes later (after answering a lot of Goat Milk Stuff questions), we were on our way!

While we got flagged because of how many soaps we had with us, the fact that it was soap was not an issue. Let's talk for a moment about the TSA travel restrictions for your bath and body products.

TSA Travel Restrictions for Soap

According to the TSA website ,

You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Placing these items in the small bag and separating from your carry-on baggage facilitates the screening process. Pack items that are in containers larger than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in checked baggage.

Based on this, there is no limit to bringing bar soap with you in either your checked or carry-on baggage. Since you don't need to worry about bar soap spilling and getting on your clothes, this is the optimal choice for travel.

But if you prefer to bring liquid soap, you will need to keep it under 3.4 oz in your carry-on case. Anything over that will need to be checked in your regular suitcase.

If you choose to travel with our liquid soap foamer bottle , you will need to put it in your checked luggage since it contains 4 oz. We also strongly recommend double bagging it in a sealable plastic bags in case the pressure in the airplane cargo causes any leaks.

And keep in mind that it is the container size and not the amount of product inside that counts. As the TSA website says, "Containers that are larger than 3.4 oz (100 ml) regardless of amount inside must be in checked baggage."

But what about lotion?

TSA Travel Restrictions for Lotion

Let's look back at the TSA website:

You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Any liquid, aerosol, gel, cream or paste that alarms during screening will require additional screening.

And since according to the TSA guidelines, any substance that is free-flowing or viscous is considered a liquid, commercial liquid lotions definitely are affected by this rule.

Hopefully you are aware of how dangerous liquid lotions can be and you've stopped using them. If you've switched to our Solid Goat Milk Lotions, you've experienced how wonderful they are for your skin.

But solid lotions are also much more convenient to take with you when you travel. Even if a TSA agent considered the solid lotions a cream (which they technically aren't), our large stick size is 2 oz which is below the 3.4 oz limit. So you can take our small and large lotions sticks with you in your carry-on luggage.

But whether you pack your solid goat milk lotions in your carry-on or checked baggage, there are never any concerns about it leaking all over your clothes and other packed items!

Let's summarize the TSA rules for traveling with your toiletries...

  • You can pack any of our goat milk soaps (bar form) in either your carry-on or checked luggage.
  • You can pack any of our solid lotion sticks in either your carry-on or checked luggage.
  • You can pack our liquid soap in your checked luggage only.

Our Favorite TSA Friendly Travel Soaps

Now that you know what (and where) the TSA will allow you pack, I want to share a list of some of our favorite travel soaps.

Unscented Goat Milk Soaps

Although many people prefer soaps with strong scents, unscented soaps offer tons of benefits including:

Unscented soaps are great for sensitive skin. If you are searching for the best TSA bar soap for sensitive skin , unscented goat milk soaps are ideal. They are perfect for those suffering from skin conditions such as eczema , acne , or psoriasis . Also, if you’re undergoing procedures such as chemotherapy or radiation , these soaps are safe for you as well. And since traveling can negatively impact your skin, choosing an unscented soap can be beneficial during your travels.

Unscented soaps are highly moisturizing. Another benefit is that they are highly moisturizing and include vitamins, alpha hydroxy acids, and minerals, which are great for the skin.

Unscented soaps are considerate of others. Although you may not personally have any sensitivity to scents, there may be others traveling near you that are. When traveling in close confinement (as you do on a plane), using unscented soaps may prevent others around you from being triggered by any strong scents.

Your options for unscented soaps include:

  • Purity Soap : A mild soap with a faint yet pleasant aroma, purity soap is ideal for those who suffer from eczema and other related skin conditions.
  • Activated Bamboo Charcoal Soap : This is another excellent unscented travel friendly soap. Activated Bamboo Charcoal Soap is a mild yet effective bar soap that can help with exfoliation, odor control, and much more.
  • Purity Oats Soap : Purity Oats Soap includes highly beneficial ingredients such as gluten-free oats which can help with any itching that occurs while you travel.
  • Castile Soap : Free of colors and fragrances, Castile Soap is luxurious and hydrating to the skin.
  • Calendula Soap : Since Calendula flowers are often used to treat burns, bruises, cuts, etc., Calendula Soap has similar effects. This anti-inflammatory soap can help fight viruses, fungi, bacteria, and more.

Unscented soaps are also great for traveling because you can pack them without worrying about the scent transferring to other objects in your suitcase or travel bag.

Other TSA Friendly Soap Options

If you are interested in TSA friendly Goat Milk Soaps that are scented, here are some great choices:

  • Lavender Soap : Sometimes it's hard to sleep when you travel. Lavender has been show to promote relaxation that can lead to better sleep.
  • Bug Out Soap : If you're going to an area with lots of biting insects, the Bug Out is one more line of defense against mosquito bites and mosquito borne illnesses. This soap may also help prevent tick bites if traveling in tick infested areas. Tick borne illnesses are on the rise and this is a great addition to help protect yourself.
  • Tea Tree Soap : Tea tree is naturally antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. It's a great soap to have with you to if you are traveling to very humid areas or if you are likely to get any cuts or scrapes that need to be carefully washed out.
  • Jewelweed Soap : Nothing can ruin a vacation faster than a nasty case of poison ivy. Help protect yourself if you may be exposed to this nasty plant during your travels.
  • Shampoo Soap : No need to worry about packing a big bottle of shampoo and a separate bottle of conditioner. The shampoo soap will clean your hair and is much more travel friendly.
  • Shaving Soap : Skip the shaving cream and grab one of these natural soap bars instead. No matter if you're shaving your face, armpits, legs, or anywhere else, these soaps help to moisturize and soothe the skin while also preventing razor burn.
  • Pet Soap : . If your pets are joining you, being able to bathe them if they need it is important. Because this is a solid pet soap, you don't need to worry about the difficulties of transporting a liquid soap on the plane.

TSA and Travel Friendly Lotions

When it comes to traveling and skincare, it's best to always be prepared. If you are traveling to places that are especially cold, hot, or dry, packing the proper skincare items is essential. Solid Goat Milk Lotions are a great, easy to pack option that will help care for your skin no matter where you're traveling. And they benefit your skin without the unnecessary additives such as chemicals and preservatives found in commercial liquid lotions.

Consider packing any of these Solid Goat Milk Lotions depending on where you're traveling...

  • Bug Out : As with the Bug Out soap, this lotion is a great way to naturally help protect you from biting insects and any disease they may carry.
  • Cold Relief : This lotion can help relieve any cold symptoms you develop during your travels.
  • Lavender : If you can't fall asleep, try applying some lavender lotion and breathing deeply of the calming scent.
  • Tea Tree : The anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree make this a great option for skin that is chapped by extreme cold during any winter holidays or extreme heat during tropical getaways.

Another Travel Necessity

There are three more items that our family never travels without. We all have these in our travel toiletry kits and they've come to the rescue more than once.

  • Arnica Salve : You may often find yourself with sore muscles on your travels. This can happen because you are moving more than you are used to moving or because you are working different muscles. Regardless of the cause, arnica salve can help relieve muscle aches which will help to keep you moving and enjoying your trip.
  • Comfrey Salve : We designed the comfrey salve for cuts and scrapes, but we have found that it is magical (at least we think so) for sunburns. As a family, we've all applied comfrey to a part of our sunburned skin and seen that the comfrey coated skin has healed much faster from sunburn than the skin that was either left alone or had aloe applied. We LOVE the comfrey for sunburns and never travel without it.
  • Jewelweed Salve : Most people don't encounter poison ivy on their vacations, but if you find yourself with a poison ivy rash, the Jewelweed salve is definitely your friend.

Each of these salves are under the TSA minimum weight and are approved for packing in either your carry-on or checked baggage. We recommend keeping them in a resealable plastic bag to keep them from getting on your clothes or other travel items.

Stress Less, Enjoy More!

With summer travel going strong, I've been getting a lot of questions lately about whether our products can safely travel on an airplane. I hope this blog post removes any concerns about whether or not your Goat Milk Stuff products are TSA and travel friendly - they are!

You can absolutely pack your favorite Goat Milk Stuff items to bring with you as you travel. The soaps and lotions can safely handle the pressure and temperature differentials if they travel in your checked baggage. They are also TSA-friendly so you don't need to worry about them being confiscated.

Packing for a trip does not have to be a stressful experience, especially where your skincare is concerned. So take the time to prepare for your trip by selecting your favorite Goat Milk Stuff soaps, lotions, and salves to travel with.

We pray you enjoy safe travels and lots of wonderful new memories!

Why keeping soap dry is important for travelers

Traveling can be an exciting and enriching experience, but it also comes with its challenges. One such challenge is keeping your soap dry while on the go. While this may seem like a trivial concern, it is actually quite important for several reasons. In this blog post, we will explore why keeping soap dry is essential for travelers and provide practical tips to help you achieve this.

  • Hygiene: One of the primary reasons to keep your soap dry while traveling is to maintain good hygiene. Moisture can create a breeding ground for bacteria and mold, which can compromise your health. By keeping your soap dry, you can reduce the risk of contamination and keep your skin clean and healthy.
  • Longevity: Another important reason to keep your soap dry is to ensure its longevity. Soap that gets wet frequently will dissolve and wear down more quickly, resulting in waste and inconvenience. By keeping your soap dry, you can extend its lifespan and make the most of your purchase.

Now that we understand why it is important to keep soap dry while traveling, let's explore some practical tips to help you achieve this:

  • Use a soap dish: Invest in a quality soap dish that has drainage holes or ridges to allow excess water to drain away. This will help your soap dry faster and stay dry even in humid environments. Look for soap dishes made from durable materials, such as plastic or silicone, that are lightweight and easy to pack.
  • Wrap in a washcloth: If you don't have a soap dish or want an additional layer of protection, wrap your soap in a clean washcloth before stowing it in your toiletry bag. The washcloth will absorb excess moisture, keeping your soap dry and preventing it from making a mess in your bag.
  • Allow time for drying: Before packing up your soap, make sure it is completely dry. Leaving it out in the open air for a few hours or using a hairdryer on a low setting can help speed up the drying process. It is essential to ensure your soap is fully dry to prevent it from getting wet during transit.
  • Opt for solid soap bars: Liquid soap is more prone to leakage and spills during travel. To avoid this, opt for solid soap bars, which are easier to keep dry and less likely to create a mess in your bag. Solid soap bars also tend to last longer, making them an economical choice for travelers.
  • Keep the soap separate: To minimize the risk of your soap getting wet from other toiletries, keep it separate in a dedicated compartment or ziplock bag. This will prevent any accidental spills or leaks from ruining your soap and ensure it remains dry throughout your journey.

In conclusion, keeping soap dry while traveling is essential for maintaining good hygiene and prolonging its lifespan. By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your soap stays dry and in excellent condition throughout your trip. So pack your soap wisely, and enjoy your travels with peace of mind knowing that cleanliness and hygiene are well taken care of.

You may want to see also

Whether you're going on a short trip or a long vacation, one essential item you need to pack is soap. However, keeping soap dry while traveling can be quite a challenge. Nobody wants to deal with soggy, mushy, or messy soap bars! To help you out, we've put together a list of the best soap storage options for traveling, so you can keep your soap fresh and dry throughout your journey.

Soap Case with Drainage Holes:

Invest in a soap case with drainage holes. These cases are designed to allow water to drain out, keeping your soap bar dry between uses. Look for a case with a secure latch or seal to prevent any leakage, ensuring your soap doesn't ruin your other travel essentials.

Soap Pouch:

A soap pouch is another excellent option to carry your soap while traveling. These pouches usually come with a drawstring or zippered closure, which helps to keep your soap secure and dry. The mesh or net-like material allows proper airflow, preventing the soap from becoming mushy.

If you prefer a more traditional storage option, a soap tin is a classic choice. Opt for a tin with a well-fitting lid to keep your soap protected from moisture. Make sure to dry your soap thoroughly before placing it in the tin to avoid any moisture buildup inside.

Soap Sheets:

Soap sheets are thin, individual sheets of soap that dissolve with water. They are lightweight and compact, making them perfect for travel. Simply take out a sheet, add water, and rub your hands together to create a lather. Soap sheets come in small, travel-friendly containers that prevent them from drying out.

Silicone Soap Dish:

A silicone soap dish is a flexible and lightweight option that provides a cushioning effect to protect your soap. These dishes are easy to clean, quick-drying, and perfect for travel. Look for a dish with a non-slip bottom to prevent any accidental slips or spills in your luggage.

Soap Saver Bag:

A soap saver bag is a plastic mesh bag that holds your soap, allowing you to use it like a loofah. The bag helps to create a lather while preventing soap residue from getting all over your belongings. These bags are reusable, durable, and easy to rinse and dry.

Now that you know the best soap storage options for traveling, you can ensure your soap stays fresh and dry during your trip. Remember to pack your soap in a waterproof bag or wrap it in a plastic wrap if you're worried about any potential leaks. With these storage solutions, you can enjoy clean, dry soap wherever your travels take you. Safe travels!

Do the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders Travel with the Team?

Travelling can be an exciting and adventurous experience, but sometimes it can be a challenge to keep your belongings organized and dry. One item that often gets overlooked is soap. Whether you're staying in hotels, hostels, or camping, having a dry bar of soap is essential for staying clean and hygienic. Here are some tips for ensuring your soap stays dry while on the go:

  • Choose a soap container: Invest in a good-quality soap container that is air tight and waterproof. Many travel stores offer compact soap containers that are specifically designed for travelling. Look for one with a secure latch or double-seal to prevent any moisture from getting in.
  • Wrap your soap in a washcloth: If you don't have a soap container or want to save space, use a washcloth to wrap your soap. This will not only help keep it dry, but also prevent it from rubbing against other items in your bag and creating a mess. Simply place the bar of soap in the center of the washcloth, fold the corners in, and secure it with a rubber band or hair tie.
  • Use a soap dish with drainage: If you prefer using a soap dish, make sure it has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape. This will prevent the soap from sitting in a pool of water and becoming soggy. Look for a soap dish made of durable materials like plastic or silicone, which are lightweight and easy to clean.
  • Let your soap air dry: After each use, allow your soap to fully air dry before packing it away. This will help remove any excess moisture and prevent it from becoming mushy. If possible, place the soap on a towel or a dry surface to speed up the drying process. Avoid storing wet soap in a ziplock bag or a plastic container, as it will trap the moisture and promote bacterial growth.
  • Opt for solid shampoo and body bars: If you're concerned about keeping multiple bars of soap dry, consider switching to solid shampoo and body bars. These compact bars serve multiple purposes and are ideal for travelling. They are usually formulated to be gentler on the skin and hair, and they eliminate the need for additional bottles or containers.
  • Store soap separately from other toiletries: To avoid any accidental spillage or contact with wet items, it's best to keep your soap separate from other toiletries. Consider using a dedicated pocket or compartment in your bag for your soap, or use a small zippered pouch to keep it contained.
  • Pack an absorbent material: Adding an absorbent material to your soap container or soap dish can help soak up any excess moisture. You can use a small piece of sponge, a kitchen paper towel, or even a tea bag. Changing the absorbent material regularly will prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your soap stays dry and clean while on the go. Remember, hygiene is essential, especially when you're travelling, so take the necessary steps to keep your soap dry and ready to use whenever you need it.

Traveling to Canada: Everything You Need to Know About Traveling with a US Visa

When traveling, keeping soap dry can be a real challenge. The last thing you want is a messy, soggy bar of soap in your luggage. So how do you keep soap dry while traveling? Here are some common mistakes to avoid:

Mistake: Packing the soap directly in your toiletry bag.

Solution: Instead of putting the soap in your toiletry bag, wrap it in a plastic bag or cling film. This will provide an extra layer of protection against moisture.

Mistake: Not allowing the soap to dry fully before packing it.

Solution: Make sure to let your soap dry completely before packing it. This can be done by placing it in a well-ventilated area, ideally using a soap dish with drainage holes. If you're in a hurry, you can use a hairdryer on low heat to speed up the drying process.

Mistake: Storing the soap in a wet or damp container.

Solution: It's important to store the soap in a dry container. If you're using a soap dish, make sure it has drainage holes to allow any excess water to escape. If you're using a plastic bag, try to squeeze out any excess air before sealing it.

Mistake: Ignoring the humidity levels.

Solution: Consider the humidity levels of your destination. If you're traveling to a humid climate, it's even more important to take extra precautions to keep your soap dry. Consider using a dehumidifier in your luggage or choosing a travel soap container that is specifically designed to keep moisture out.

Mistake: Not using a soap saver.

Solution: A soap saver is a small mesh or plastic bag that can be used to hold your soap. It allows air to circulate around the soap, helping it to dry faster and reducing the chance of mold or mildew. Consider investing in a soap saver to keep your soap dry and secure.

Mistake: Packing wet soap with clothing or other items.

Solution: Never pack wet soap with your clothes or other items. The moisture from the soap can ruin your clothing and make an unpleasant mess. Always make sure your soap is fully dry before packing it, and keep it in a separate compartment of your luggage.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can ensure that your soap stays dry and ready for use during your travels. Remember to give your soap enough time to dry, use a protective wrapping or container, and consider the humidity levels of your destination. With these simple precautions, you'll have clean, dry soap wherever you go.

Understanding the Basics of a Travel Visa

Frequently asked questions.

One option is to use a soap dish with a lid. This will keep the soap protected from moisture and prevent it from getting wet. Another option is to wrap your soap in a washcloth or small towel and secure it with a rubber band. This will provide a barrier between the soap and any moisture in your travel bag. Finally, you can consider using a travel-sized soap that comes in a waterproof container.

When it comes to travelling, it can be helpful to choose a soap that is quick-drying. Look for soaps that are made from ingredients like glycerin, which tends to dry faster than other types of soap. Additionally, opting for a solid soap instead of a liquid soap can help minimize any leakages or spills.

If your soap does happen to get wet while travelling, it's best to dry it out as soon as possible. Pat it dry with a towel or tissue and then allow it to air dry completely before using it again. You can also place it in a well-ventilated area to speed up the drying process. It's important to avoid storing or using wet soap, as it can become soft and mushy.

The Best Shampoo Bars for Every Hair Type

By Julia Eskins

As more people make an effort to cut down on single-use plastics , the once humble shampoo bar has been given a salon-worthy upgrade. There are dozens of high-quality and solid shampoos on the market today, inspiring even more of us to ditch traditional bottled shampoo once and for all. For travelers, there’s even more incentive to get on board: Doing away with liquids means less hassle while going through security and zero risk of leakage in your suitcase or backpack . And, since most bars are formulated to be concentrated, waterless, and biodegradable, they tend to last twice as long and are gentler on the planet than their mini bottled counterparts.

Fortunately, as interest grows, brands are creating shampoo bars tailored to different hair types and preferences—whether you have color-treated tresses or fine strands in need of some oomph. I've tested and reviewed more than a dozen shampoo bars to see which ones worked best, so you can have more good hair days (and a smaller carbon footprint) on-the-go. (For reference, I have fine, color-treated hair that’s prone to breakage.) Below, the best shampoo bars to add to your Dopp kit .

Notice Hair Co. The Stimulator Shampoo Bar

Best all around

A thick lather and an invigorating tingling sensation make shampooing with Notice Hair Co.'s Stimulator bar a true joy. This has been my go-to shampoo bar for nearly two years because it always leaves my hair feeling clean, hydrated, and weightless. Formulated to promote scalp health, this bar uses French green clay to clear dirt and impurities and matcha green tea to improve circulation and stimulate skin’s healthy cell turnover. If you plan to travel with your bars, grab a set that comes with the travel tins , which are super lightweight and look sleek in your Dopp kit.

J.R. Liggett Original Formula Shampoo Bar

Best multi-tasker

J.R. Liggett’s multi-tasking bars are ideal for camping or backpacking trips. They contain 100 percent vegetable oil (coconut, castor, and olive oils) and work for all hair types. Plus, they can be used as body soap, for shaving, or for hand washing clothing items like socks and underwear. I especially love the travel-ready original bar, which comes with a small water-repellant and washable pouch, as well as a paper mat that wraps around three sides of the bar so that it doesn’t pick up any debris along the way. I’ve taken this bar on four trips, including a safari, and find it’s perfect for when I have to pack light.

Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind Aloe + Oat Milk Ultra Soothing 3-in-1 Cleansing Bar

Best for sensitive scalps

Briogeo’s aloe and oat milk cleansing bar is hypoallergenic and free of fragrance and essential oils, making it ideal for sensitive skin and noses. The bar can be used as a shampoo, facial cleanser, and body soap, and it actually performs well in all three categories. I recently brought this bar on a surf trip to Costa Rica , and it was perfect for nourishing my dry skin and hair after spending time in salt water and sun. The bar contains soothing aloe and colloidal oatmeal, which naturally calms scalp irritation. I was showering often between activities yet my hair never felt dry or frizzy after using this shampoo (though I would recommend following it up with the conditioner of your choice). The fact that you can use it from head to toe is extra-appealing for frequent fliers looking to save space in their Dopp kit .

HiBar Volumize Shampoo Bar

Best for fine hair

When I became curious about shampoo bars in 2021, HiBar was the first brand I tried—and it’s still one of my favorites. These bars feature a cylinder shape with an angled edge, making them easier to apply directly to the scalp, and a flat base that allows the bar to be stored upright when not in use. The brand’s volumizing shampoo bar is a standout for fine hair. The bar contains African dates and vitamin B5 to boost body and tame frizz. And it even works for those following the Curly Girl Method, which encourages the use of sulfate-free shampoos to smooth and define waves, coils, and curls.

Kitsch Rice Water Shampoo Bar for Hair Growth

Best for thinning hair

Rice water has long been touted as a miracle ingredient for fuller, longer, and shinier locks, so I was excited to try Kitsch's shampoo bar for hair growth. The first time I used the bar, I “painted” it as directed onto my strands, and almost audibly remarked at how smoothly it glided from roots to ends, creating a satisfying, lightly scented lather. In addition to protein-packed rice water, the bar has a moisturizing base of shea butter and coconut oil, which helps to detangle hair. After following it up with the conditioner bar, I brushed my hair out without any shedding or breakage (a rarity for me) and my hair looked extra shiny after blow drying . I’ve only used this bar for a couple of weeks, so it’s too early to tell if it will help me achieve Rapunzel-length locks, but I’m impressed by how soft, shiny, and tangle-free my hair feels after each use.

Davine Momo Shampoo Bar

Best for dry hair

Davine shampoo bars have a noticeable floral scent—but don’t let that deter you from trying the made-in-Italy Momo bar. Once you’ve lathered and rinsed, you’ll be left with smooth, hydrated hair and just a hint of fragrance. I’ve used these bars for more than a year (alternating between this one and the Volu version , when I need some extra oomph) but I always reach for the Momo when my dry ends need some extra love. The bar contains vitamin-rich yellow melon extract, and I appreciate the simple and recyclable paper packaging. I also recommend the aluminum shampoo bar case , which has a removable grid tray for easy transportation and drainage.

Ethique Frizz Wrangler

Best for curly hair

As of 2023, Ethique has prevented over 30 million bottles from going to landfill. The climate-positive brand’s eco-friendly ethos includes planting a tree for every order, offsetting 120 percent of its carbon emissions, and using compostable packaging. Its waterless shampoo bars also deliver exceptional results. The brand makes bars for all hair types, but the frizz-taming shampoo bar is a favorite among my friends with curly or wavy hair. It contains fair trade Samoan coconut oil and coconut butter to help smooth flyaways and enhance your hair’s natural shape and texture.

Attitude Leaves Bar Detox Shampoo

Best for oily hair

Rich in yellow clay, a mineral-based active ingredient that helps protect hair while absorbing excess oil, Attitude’s detox shampoo bar was made to tackle greasy strands. This lightly fragranced bar lathers well, lasts long (according to the brand, one bar equals two standard-sized bottles of shampoo), and leaves your hair feeling deeply cleansed and fluffy. I’ve been a fan of the detox shampoo bar since 2022 and love that it leaves my scalp feeling clean (yet doesn’t dry out my hair). As a bonus, Attitude works with One Tree Planted and Eden Reforestation products to plant a tree for every bar sold.

Klorane Hair Shampoo Bar

Best for damaged hair

As a fan of the French brand Klorane, I was happy to see that they offer a solid version of its leading shampoo. Enriched with mango butter, which is packed with vitamins A and E, it fortifies strands to reduce breakage and smooth split ends. Ideal for thin hair or ends that have been damaged from hot tools or bleaching, this bar left my hair feeling ultra-nourished without the heaviness that comes with your typical moisturizing shampoos. Those wanting a generous lather should first lather the bar in their hands before applying it to their scalp, as it tends to not get as foamy as other solid shampoos.

Odacité 552M Soap Free Shampoo Bar

Best for color-treated hair

Named for the 552 million plastic shampoo bottles that end up in US landfills every year, Odacité’s 552M shampoo bar offers an eco-friendly alternative to professional-quality shampoo. The soap-free formulation, made with argan and castor oils and cupuaçu butter (a fleshy fruit related to cacao), is safe for color-treated hair, but also works well on untreated hair of most types (thin, curly, straight, or coarse). Applying the bar directly to my scalp created a creamy lather, rather than foamy suds, and the refreshing citrus aroma made for a pleasant in-shower experience. The results were bouncy, silky-soft locks that didn’t feel stripped of their natural oils.

Bar soap or body wash: Which is best for your skin and the planet?

What’s the most sustainable way to wash your hands or lather up in the shower?

In general, the greenest option is an old-school bar of soap made from plant oil or animal fat and lye, without many extra ingredients. Simple bar soap cuts greenhouse emissions by about a third compared with liquid soap, according to a study from the Institute of Environmental Engineering at the Swiss university ETH Zurich.

Subscribe to The Post Most newsletter for the most important and interesting stories from The Washington Post.

“Soap is a natural product, it’s sustainable, and it’s been used for a long time,” said Tony O’Lenick, president of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, a professional association for the scientists who concoct recipes for beauty products. The downside: “That kind of soap dries skin out,” he added.

That’s why many people have turned to liquid hand soap and body wash, which have seized about half the American soap market since their introduction in the ’70s and ’80s, according to sales data from Mintel, a market research company. Liquid soaps and body wash typically come with extra ingredients to moisturize skin, and many brands advertise the skin care benefits of their products.

“A lot of those new claims have mostly been tacked onto liquid formats, particularly liquid body wash, which has kind of left bar soap behind,” said Joan Li, a senior beauty and personal care analyst at Mintel.

But lately, the soap market has gotten a lot more complicated: Many bars of soap - looking to ditch their reputation as drying - now contain the same artificial, petroleum-based ingredients and moisturizing additives as liquid soaps. And some liquid soap - in a bid to market itself as eco-friendly - is now made from the simple, natural ingredients found in old school bar soap.

If you want to cut through the noise and pick the greenest option, according to O’Lenick, you should think about ingredients, packaging and the differences in how you scrub with bars vs. liquid soap.

Ingredients

All soap cleans dirt and oils from our skin using molecules called surfactants, which help water pick up grime and wash it away. But there are two ways of creating surfactants.

The old-school way is to combine fat and an alkali such as lye - the basic ingredients of soap for centuries. But around the 1940s, O’Lenick says, cosmetic companies found a cheap way to make surfactants out of petroleum. Technically, he says, chemists don’t call these products “soap” - they are “detergents.”

Although they clean more or less the same way, soaps and detergents have a couple of key differences: Soaps tend to be more alkaline than detergents, which changes the chemistry of your skin and leaves it feeling drier. But detergents are made from drilling and refining oil, so they tend to be worse for the environment. Making detergents uses five times as much energy and produces about 10 times as many greenhouse emissions as making simple soap, according to the Swiss researchers.

To understand whether you’re buying a natural soap or a synthetic detergent, you have to look at the label, O’Lenick said. Most products - even most bars of soap - are made from detergents, which contain ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).

True soaps made from animal fat or plant oil as well as lye may also contain additives, such as glycerin, scents and essential oils.

Packaging and transportation

Ingredients aside, bar soap has a clear advantage over liquid soap when it comes to packaging and transportation.

Bar soap typically comes with minimal packaging - a cardboard box, paper or nothing at all - which is often easy to recycle. Soap bars also sometimes come in plastic wrap, but it’s generally less material than liquid soap, which comes in thicker plastic containers that sometimes contain pumps that are hard to recycle. Packaging liquid soap is 19 times as energy-intensive as packaging bar soap, according to the Swiss study.

Plus, liquid soap is mostly water, which means the majority of what gets shipped around the world from a factory to your doorstep is something you could get from your faucet. Bar soap is pure, concentrated cleaning product; you pay only for the soap, and you add water when it’s time to lather up. Distributing liquid soap creates nearly eight times as many carbon emissions as an equivalent amount of bar soap, according to the Swiss study.

One big advantage for liquid soap over bar soap is that people typically spend less time lathering, which means they don’t use as much warm water, according to the Swiss study - although it made that comparison only for handwashing, not showering.

Bar soap scrubbers typically use about 40 percent more water, according to the study. That’s by far the biggest source of environmental harm from using bar soap - but it’s not enough of an impact to make bar soap worse overall than liquid soap, according to the study.

The Bottom Line

But whether your soap is bar or liquid, natural or synthetic, it’s not going to be a huge part of your carbon footprint. In the worst case, washing your hands creates 15 grams of carbon emissions, according to the study - the equivalent of charging your phone one time, or driving a car 200 feet. We’re not judging you for the soap that you use.

But, collectively, that can add up as billions of people wash their hands or bathe hundreds or thousands of times a year. If you’re so inclined, it makes sense to switch to a more eco-friendly product. Just understand that there may be a trade-off between sustainability and comfort.

“The consumer has to decide: Are they serious about where their soap comes from, whether it’s synthetic or natural? And do they like the feel of the product?” O’Lenick said. “You could have the most sustainable soap in the world, but if it doesn’t feel good, you’re not going to sell [more than] one bar to everybody that comes around.”

Bar soaps aren't new, but they are having a resurgence at the moment. And for good reason: Besides helping to remove makeup , oil, dirt and grime from skin, many of today's bar soap formulas "incorporate milder surfactants such as sodium cocoyl isethionate, which are less drying than traditional soaps ," explains Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty, Health and Sustainability Lab Director Sabina Wizemann .

They're also convenient — in addition to being travel-friendly, most bar soaps can be used on face and body, notes Monica Li, M.D. , a double board-certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor for the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science at the University of British Columbia. Bar soap is also waterless, so it's "less likely to harbor bacteria as long as it is not stored in water, which also means less preservatives tend to be added," Dr. Li adds.

In the Beauty Lab, our scientists have thoroughly evaluated a wide variety of bar soaps — including options for sensitive skin and dry skin — taking into consideration how well they cleanse, if they leave skin feeling dry, scent and more. Each tester used a label-masked product at least twice over the course of one week, then reported their feedback on factors such as ease of use, scent, texture, look and feel on skin and sun protection ability. </p>

11) How we choose the best bar soaps

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab tests everything from the best body washes to the best body lotions you can buy. To find the best bar soaps, GH Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann evaluated four options, taking into consideration aspects like how well the soap lathers, if it dries out skin, how easily it can be rinsed off skin and more. We used these testing results in combination with recommendations from our beauty editors and dermatologists to create this list of the best bar soaps on the market.

12) What to look for when shopping for bar soaps

Consider the your skin type and concerns before making your purchase, so you can find the best one for your needs.

✔️ Oily or acne-prone skin : Glycerin-based soaps are generally gentle and non-comedogenic, Wizemann explains, making them suitable for oily and acne-prone skin (Dr. Li also recommends using a gentle, non-comedogenic soap in your routine). However, if you're looking for active ingredients in your soap, consider tea tree oil or salicylic acid. "Tea tree oil can help reduce acne-causing bacteria and inflammation while controlling excess oil," Wizemann says. "Salicylic acid soaps can unclog pores, exfoliate dead skin cells and reduce oiliness." Look for soaps containing a low concentration of salicylic acid (usually around 2%).

✔️ Sensitive skin : If your skin is sensitive, "we recommend avoiding fragrances and opt for unscented options, including essential oils," says Wizemann. Fragrance can irritate sensitive skin.

✔️ Dry skin : In general, but especially if you have dry skin, it's great if your soap "contains added skin-barrier supporting skin care ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid," says Dr. Li. Shea butter is also another good ingredient to look for, Wizemann adds.

13) Why trust Good Housekeeping?

GH Beauty Assistant Catharine Malzahn wrote this guide. She works closely with the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab to help deliver fact-based, science-backed beauty coverage. Over the years, she has interviewed experts, written product reviews and tested hundreds of body care products, including bar soaps.

In the past decade, GH Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann has touched, researched, tested and evaluated thousands of products — including evaluating bar soaps for this story. She's also an expert in skincare ingredients , like occlusives , and verifying beauty product claims.

AAA Travel Editor, SMT

Between dozens of seaside attractions and a thriving art scene, there are plenty of reasons to visit Vancouver. The food alone is easily worth the price of admission; some of the best restaurants in Vancouver include Michelin-Star winning establishments, family-owned diners and small pop-up eateries.

When it comes to fine dining, presentation and experience are just as important as the taste and quality of your meal. Below are some of our favorite high-end Vancouver restaurants. These are the perfect places for Instagram -worthy food pics.

1. Chasters Restaurant

Chasters is a restaurant equally known for its high-quality ingredients and enthralling atmosphere. Guests can either order items à la carte or check out the 3 Course Table D'Hote Menu. The entire establishment has a very vintage feel, from aesthetics to entrees. Special mention goes to their smoked paprika chicken breast.

2. Dockside Restaurant

Seaside dining establishments have a certain charm to them that can't be found anywhere else. The Dockside Restaurant, nestled within the Granville Island Hotel, is truly one of a kind; its dreamy design, spacious dining space and succulent dishes make it the perfect venue for large parties of 30 to 300 guests. The Dockside Brunch Board for Two always makes for an unforgettable dining experience.

3. Earls Kitchen + Bar - Port Coquitlam

Bus and Stan Fuller are the father and son team who opened Earls Kitchen in 1982. They're committed to creating unique experiences based on the communities they serve. There are over 70 Earls locations spread across North America. Earls in Port Coquitlam features tons of paintings from local artists and is famous for its truffled parmesan chicken dish.

4. Ember Indian Kitchen

South East Asian cuisine has increasingly grown popular in North America, with curry bowls and butter chicken plates selling out at local shops. Ember combines creative Indian dishes with contemporary fine dining. The fish tikka dish is a featured entree and a must-try for first-time visitors.

5. The Lobby - Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier

Lobby raises the bar for hotel restaurants in several ways. From alternating daily specials to holiday brunches, this place has it all. We can't forget about the Mother's Day Brunch Buffet event that brings in dozens of guests each year. Stop by on Tuesday to enjoy their Angus Burger & Beer combo.

6. The Loft at Meadow Gardens

Meadow Gardens Golf Club is a sprawling greenspace that brings in droves of golfers weekly. The Loft is located right in the middle of this massive golf course and is loved by golfers and fine dining enthusiasts alike. This restaurant won the Open Table Diner's Choice Award in 2023, and its “Build Your Own Pasta Buffet” is a major attraction.

7. Provence Marinaside

Provence Marinaside is an award-winning restaurant that specializes in French-style dishes and soups. This venue also hosts must-see events like live jazz shows on Wednesdays. Marinaside's fish soup is so in demand that you order take-home pouches from Uber and DoorDash.

8. Yuwa Japanese Cuisine (fka Zest Restaurant)

Yuwa excels at everything from refreshing sake to Chef's choice sashimi platters. This Japanese-style establishment has won Michelin Awards and earned tons of praise from the Vancouver Sun. Yuwa even won the 2020 Wine Program Excellence Award.

Adhering to a gluten-free diet can be challenging when you're traveling abroad. Thankfully, that's not an issue when visiting Canada; many of the best Vancouver restaurants have tons of tasty gluten-free options. These must-try restaurants are always crowd-pleasers.

9. Arriva Ristorante

Arriva Ristorante is a no-frills Italian-style establishment. Everything from the menu to the restaurant's look and feel was designed with authenticity in mind. Pasta is Arriva's main specialty, which you can request gluten-free.

10. East Is East Chai Lounge - Main Street

East is East has much more to offer than a very catchy name. This Mediterranean-style restaurant is cozy and nostalgic from ceiling to floor. The Main Street location's menu is decked out with gluten-free and vegan options. They've also got a food truck that travels around Vancouver.

11. Kypriaki Mediterranean Grill

Kypriaki is a lively Mediterranean restaurant with a rustic flair and a soft spot for parties and group gatherings. Flavorful wine and beer are on tap at this venue, along with a carefully curated menu. Last but not least, Kypriaki offers gluten-free lamb chops, garlic prawns and Greek-style ribs.

12. Globe @ YVR - Fairmont Vancouver Airport

The waters of the Pacific Northwest are Globe's biggest inspiration. Oysters, scallops, mussels and a smorgasbord of fish decorate the menu. Globe's afternoon tea menu is a strong point in this venue's favor.

13. Troll's at Horseshoe Bay

Troll's pedigree extends back to 1946 when Joe and Dorothy Troll opened a weekend-only restaurant that primarily served fishermen. As a result, Troll's specialties mainly include pasta mixed with seafood. Try the homemade fish pie when you visit—it's always a crowd-pleaser.

You don't have to break the bank to savor the “Rain City's” best dishes. Some of the top restaurants in Vancouver offer amazing food at budget-friendly prices. Along with cheap activities , affordable eats can make for great times.

14. Elisabeth's Chalet

Elisabeth's Chalet specializes in European cuisine, with a menu inspired by Hungary, England and Germany. This is one of the best restaurants in Vancouver to order schnitzel, soup and filet of sole without breaking the bank.

15. Pat Quinn's Restaurant & Bar

This establishment wouldn't be out of place in our fine-dining section, but it also has an extremely diverse menu with tons of shareable entrees. Moreover, many of the appetizers here have large portion sizes that would count as a full meal at other restaurants. Looking at you, PQ's famous wings.

16. Personas Patio + Restaurant + Lounge

Happy hour at Personas is always a great time; you can buy $5 brews and half-price wine bottles to pair with smash burgers and tuna club sandwiches. Personas even has a selection of signature coffees to try out.

17. Time & Place

With locally sourced ingredients and an inspired menu, Time & Place is a go-to eatery for many great reasons. The breakfast selections here are true standouts, featuring omelets under $20 and a gourmet breakfast buffet with a $32 price tag.

best travel bar soaps

The City of Glass has a unique night scene, so it’s no surprise some of the best food in Vancouver is located in lounges and sports bars. Visit the following venues as you look for indoor activities around the city.

18. Boathouse New Westminster

The Boathouse sailed into the scene in 1981. Since then, it's been a mainstay due to its premium oyster shucks, $12 beef sliders and $8 cocktail offerings. If you have a sweet tooth, you can't go wrong with their Key Lime Pie or Chocolate Lava Cake.

19. CHOP Steakhouse & Bar - Richmond

If you fly over to the City of Glass, chances are you'll have to pass through the Vancouver International Airport. Fortunately, you'll be a short walk away from CHOP. We could give a lengthy speech about how refined this restaurant's menu is—or we could just say it's a rock-solid steakhouse with a bar and urge you to check it out ASAP.

20. Dominion Bar + Kitchen

Dominion's top priority is offering delicious food and drink while adhering to sustainability principles at all times. This restaurant also prides itself on representing Surrey's culture in its menu and aesthetic. We'll leave you with this: Dominion hosts breakfast buffets every day from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

21. The Keg Steakhouse + Bar - Park Royal

The Keg is a chain of steakhouses with locations throughout Canada. Attractive Happy Hour prices for food and drink are big draws at every Keg location, though the Prime Rib Sandwich is easily one of our favorite dishes.

22. Match Eatery & Public House - New Westminster

Older restaurants understandably hold a lot of esteem in the restaurant business; if you've managed to please multiple generations of patrons with wildly differing tastes, that speaks wonders about your establishment's quality. Match is one of those rare exceptions. Since 2013, this restaurant and pub has pleased crowds with ribs, ravioli and craft beer.

23. MIXT Lobby Lounge @ Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel

Even if you aren't staying at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel, a trip to Mixt is a must. This suave lounge serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. There's also a grab-n-go kiosk for patrons on a time crunch.

24. RiverHouse Restaurant and Pub

RiverHouse is a marina restaurant that aims to create unique dining experiences each day of the week. Prime Rib Sundays, Weekend Brunch and seasonal offerings are just a few reasons why we love this spot.

25 Sports Illustrated Clubhouse

We can't think of too many venues that are better suited for game night than the Sports Illustrated Clubhouse. Baseball, both footballs, combat sports, golf—you name it, the SI clubhouse has it on air. Try their fried chicken tacos when you visit, and wash it down with your favorite alcoholic beverage.
